3. INTRODUCTION
⢠Double membrane bound organelle.
⢠known as the â POWER HOUSE OF THE CELLââ.
⢠Mitochondria contain their own genetic system.
⢠Mitochondrial genomes are usually circular DNA molecules like those of
bacteria.
⢠They lived within larger cells (endo-symbiosis).
4. HISTORY OF MITOCHONDRIA
Discovered by -
Albert von
KĂślliker (1857)
Term mitochondria
coined by - Carl
Benda (1898)
The "powerhouse of
the cell", a phrase
coined by Philip
Siekevitz (1957).
7. INNER MEMBRANE
⢠Inner membrane forms several infoldings, known as cristae.
⢠The number of cristae is three times greater in the mitochondrion of a
cardiac muscle cell than in the mitochondrion of a liver cell.
⢠Site of ATP production(ETS).
⢠It contains ATP SYNTHASE which generates ATP in the matrix
8. SPACE MATRIX
⢠Space matrix contains many mitochondrial enzymes.
⢠Site for cellular aerobic respiration.
⢠Oxidation of pyruvate molecule.
⢠Site for kerb's cycle/TCA cycle.
⢠Contains circular DNA & ribosomes.
9. OUTER MEMBRANE
⢠Made up of lipid.
⢠Contains porins,, which allow movement of ions into and out of the
mitochondrion.
⢠Act as a selective membrane.
⢠Enzymes involved in the elongation of fatty acids and the oxidation of
adrenaline can also be found on the outer membrane.
10. FUNCTION OF MITOCHONDRIA
⢠Generate ATP through reactions of aerobic cellular respiration.
⢠Site for Krebs cycle and ETS.
⢠Role in APOPTOSIS ( PROGRAMMED CELL DEATH ).
