Strategies of Youth Justice Policies
Here we will look at the strategies of youth justice policies and practice with the ideological
motivations and identify and evaluate the social and political context. The 1908 Child Act;
Children and Young Persons Act, the Criminal Justice Act; Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and Anti
Social Behaviour Act 2003 will be discussed.
Youth justice is a creature of historical development. The structure of the industry is full of
dominant philosophies which have seeped into the foundations, which still monopolise and govern
contemporary practice and although new perspectives have emerged over the recent history, it is
necessary to trace the evolution over the last century to understand the logic behind the practice.
The strategies of youth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More young people and pre delinquent children were being drawn into the net of juvenile justice
and Springhall (1986) remarked that the impact of the 1933 Children and Young Persons Act
seemed to direct young people to court, rather than divert, under the assumption that care and
treatment would follow (cited in Muncie, 2009).
The system legitimised by welfare is always likely to come under attack from those seeking more a
punitive and retributive response. Over the 1950s and 1960s local authority care provided
attendance centres for the neglected and detention centres established by the impact of the Criminal
Justice Act 1948, retraining offenders through punitive labour brought confusion concerning the
control and treatment of juveniles.
The Children and Young Persons (Amended) Act 1952 allowing courts to remand offenders to
local authorities and those supervised following release on license from approved schools had
effectively created two strategies in which the system of control (the criminal justice system) and
care (welfare system) became intertwined.
An enlarged welfare state, part of the Labour Party s vision, brought about the highly controversial
1969 Children and Young Persons Act seeking alternatives to detention by care orders, proceedings
and treatment along with advocating a

Essay on Langston Hughes The Weary Blues
Langston Hughes The Weary Blues
Jazz music is often associated with long, lazy melodies and ornate rhythmical patterns. The Blues, a
type of jazz, also follows this similar style. Langston Hughes poem, The Weary Blues, is no
exception. The sound qualities that make up Hughes work are intricate, yet quite apparent. Hughes
use of consonance, assonance, onomatopoeia, and rhyme in The Weary Bluesgives the poem a deep
feeling of sorrow while, at the same time, allows the reader to feel as if he or she is actually
listening to the blues sung by the poem s character.
The Blues musical move was prominent during the 1920s and 30s, a time known as the Harlem
Renaissance. Blues music characteristically told the story of ... Show more content on

Another place that consonance is apparent is in line 5, ?pale, dull pallor of an old gas light. The
sticky l sounds are difficult to produce off of the tongue quickly; therefore, these words slow the
poem down. This is typical of the blues. The slow sounds of blues music are incorporated in the
words of this poem. It seems as if the words with the l sounds get extra emphasis, as well, because
they are so difficult to pronounce. Added strength through word sounds helps boost the poem s
glumness.
Line 10 is another excellent example of consonance in The Weary Blues. The m and p sounds of
He made that poor piano moan with melody give the poem a juxtaposition of warm sounds from
the m to aggressive tones with the sharp p. This is a nice element as it is characteristic of blues
music, as well. Usually there are some elements of comfort and disdain within the blues. The
contrast of the m and p sounds highlights this very well.
There is a great amount of assonance in The Weary Blues. The first example of assonance comes
right away in the poem. Line 1 opens with the long o sound in Droning a drowsy syncopated tune
and continues with Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon in line 2. This long o sound is
representative of the forlorn blues aforementioned. The long o is repeated throughout the poem, for
example in line 10 with

Royal Canadian Air Force Evaluation System
As a junior supervisor in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), I spent a lot of time evaluating
and developed my subordinates to become capable leaders and an effective member of the team.
Our evaluation system primarily focuses on ranking each member s performance and leadership
potential, both of which are incredibly valuable in a fast paced and ever changing environment.
But the evaluation system fails to identify the traits that makes up who we are as a person and
how or if we are interact with others. As such, I don t have many opportunities to introspect since I
am also evaluated by my performance and leadershipstyles. I look forward to learning more about
myself, and become a stronger individual at the end of the semester.
I wasn t surprised to see that Habit 1 (be proactive) was my highest self assessed habit. It was not
until my mid twenty s until I was able to focus on what I want to achieve in life, and thus I began
laying down the groundworks to get there. In my late teen years, I didn t do well in school and I

Ufo Crash Research Paper
The last sighting of these creepy creatures was in 1947, and only one man alive today could
share this thrilling story. In fact, this rancher was the only one to see the UFO crash occur and
get close to the UFO. The first UFO crash, occurred in Roswell, Mexico in 1947 around
Independence day. The rancher who goes by, Mac Brazel saw the incident and even went next
to the crashed object. According to the Jesse Marcel from the Roswell, Air force, army states 2
different crashes occurred within the same month with the range of 30 40 miles apart. Since
then alien and UFO theories have begun going around. The rancher states 2 aliens were dead,
one was dying, and one was trying to communicate, could this be true? Therefore, this is

Increasing Legal Driving Age
Teenagers have the highest crash rate when driving, but changing the age will not impact the
amount of crashes happening by new drivers. If the legal driving age is increased, crashes will
still happen because of new drivers and the only thing different will be the word used to describe
the people crashing. Instead of teenager it will be young adult. This won t affect the likelihood
of a person crashing, or how well someone drives. If the age that a driver can legally get behind the
wheel in a vehicle is increased, doing so won t change the ability one has to drive. Most crashes
occur because of inexperience and bad judgement, all of which are teachable. The main way to
learn how to drive is to actually drive a car. Increasing legal age is

Internal Conflicts In Julius Caesar
The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is centered around many conflicts among characters; most of them
violent while others are internal. Shakespeare uses these conflicts to develop characters and move
the story along. He uses internal conflicts, such as Caesar s decision whether or not to go to the
Senate on the day of his murder, and violent ones such as the murder of Caesar and the battle
between Octavius and Brutus. These conflicts were the major driving points in the playand
Shakespeare used them to help create a better understanding of both sides. Shakespeare used the
tension of the conflict to help propel the story and help the reader establish connections with
characters on each side of the conflicts. One of the first major conflicts of the novel was when
Caesar was faced with the decision of going to the Senate after multiple warnings of his death, or
to stay home and play it safe. The first warning was from a soothsayer at a public ceremony for
Caesar. From the crowd he called out, Beware the ides of March, (Caesar I.ii.17). Caesar thinks
nothing of the warning and continues on. Not long after Caesar s wife, Calpurnia, warns her
husband about a dream she has of his statue filled with holes and bleeding profusely and many other

values the same way. Throughout the text Leah, who sees with the eyes of an intelligent, flexible

Leah Price s pivotal moment follows at the church s vote. While the congregation votes on tata

Analysis Of The Poem Purloined Letter
Purloined Letter Essay
How does Poe bring about the idea of superiority in logical thinking over analysis of hard facts in
his short story Purloined Letter? Poe employs a technique of keeping the audience in the dark about
what the main character is thinking. There is a difference drawn between characters that use logic
and characters that use intuition. Intuition is always shown to have its short comings and logical
thinking is shown to get the main characters further into solving a case.
In the Purloined Letter Poe gives the reader little detail of how Dupin is solving the case in his
head, at first. Dupin is a character that doesn t rely on the plain facts in front of him. He uses
psychological analysis, forensics and looks deeper into the details of a crime. Throughout the
whole short story the Prefect of the police is explaining how detailed his investigation was and
how baffled he still was. This gives us the sense that the Prefect is not in the least unintelligent. At
the end of his explanation Dupin already has the letter and hands it over to the Prefect for the some
of his earnings.
In that case, replied Dupin, opening a drawer, and producing a cheque book, you may as well fill
me up a cheque for the amount mentioned. When you have signed it, I will hand you the letter.
(Poe 510). It gives the reader a sense of bewilderment and left wondering how he did it. Then
Dupin goes into a detailed explanation of how he figured out where the letter was hidden through

Nursing Succession Planning Essay
Setting
Lack of succession planning among the nursing workforce is expected to have a rippling affect
across all care settings and worldwide in the years to come. Research supports that nurse manager s
actions have the potential to influence outcomes in all care settings (Titzer, Phillips, Tooley, Hall,
Shirley, 2013). Presently, the nursing workforce is experiencing higher levels of turnover among
first line managers than among senior leadership positions (Titzer et al., 2013). Organizations are
encouraged to conduct gap analyses to project vacancies in key positions related to retirement and

Despite these suggestions, as many as 70% of hospitals still actively lack succession planning
initiatives and over a third of existing nurse succession plans primarily focus on top level
management positions (Titzer, Shirley Hauck, 2014). With more than 44% of nurses in
management positions reported to be over the age of 55 and the cost of replacing nurse managers
climbing to 75 125% of typical annual salaries, organization s need to turn increasing attention to
proactive succession planning in order to remain viable in the healthcare industry (Sverdlik, 2012;
Titzer et al., 2013). Increasing pressures to fill vacancies is resulting in clinically skilled but often
underprepared nurses being selected for nursing leadership positions (Titzer Shirley, 2013). Lack of
formal preparation renders many aspiring nurse managers ineffective which has been associated
with negative implications such as role transition stress, poor work environment, and increased
turnover (Titzer Shirley, 2013). This is further complicated by a lack of interest among younger
novice nurses in leadership and management roles (Titzer et al., 2013). As such, the proposed
succession planning program will utilize a multilayered approach to encompass all

Educating Students In High Schools
High school is supposed to be four years of learning everything that will be needed to become a
successful adult after graduation. However, it is the opinion of many that high schools are not
educating students on things that will truly help them succeed in adult life. There are many
supporting statements for this argument, many students have to take classes that have nothing to
do with what they plan on majoring in, most students that graduate have no idea how to do their
own taxes or anything like that, and they feel like teachers do not give them enough freedom in the
classroom.
Depending on where the high school is at, roughly around 30 credits are needed to graduate school
and most of these credits are earned in classes that students learn things that they will never need
again. If a student wants to me a book publisher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some teachers understand this and give the students trust and allow them to leave the classroom for
things like the restroom and to get a drink. Instilling trust into student will show them more how to
be an adult which is what a teacher should want for their students. Students are so used to being
told what to do and when to do it that they have so self responsibility, they expect someone else to
instruct them on everything.
This is among many reasons why high schools should broaden their offered classes and the way
they treat their students. This would greatly improve the education levels and the way the students
act themselves. Students would be motivated to attend and do their best in school if they are
actually doing things that will improve their futures. Schools need to broaden what they are
offering to their students and teach them things that they will actually use in their future to better

Not A Student Loan For College Essay
Abstract
The decision to attend college for most individuals yield promise of advancement in being able to
further one s learning, and assists with developing a marketable educational portfolio from an
institution of reputed academia. However, with the pursuit of obtaining a college degree from a
university, there are augmented concerns with student loans and repayment issues. In electing to
secure a student loan for college, prospective students or parents should realistically, forecast or
measure probable (anticipated) student debt. In particularly, with students aspiring to attend college,
several organizations or subsidiaries, and for profit institutions cash in on unknowledgeable
hopefuls contributing to the student loan debt dilemma/crisis (or student debt). The college costs
and financial constraints for student borrowing, if ill prepared will substantially effect students in
pre graduate or even post grad status. The findings suggest that there is eminence of the possibility
of default, with repayment behavior which effects long term financial outlook. In examining the
data on cumulative debt, number and characteristics of borrowers, types of institutions, and

Essay On Ethical Use Of Child Labor
Is it ethical for Multinational Corporations to set up establishments or production factories in
foreign countries to take advantage of the use of child labor? Currently child labor is one of the
most controversial human rights issues that needs to be addressed. This issued can be addressed
beginning with the root issue of Multinational corporations (MNCs). This is a serious issue that
should be recognized nationally because of serious ethical concerns. Its estimated that about 168
million children work in the labor force. Not only do they work extended hours, but an estimated
85 million of these children work in hazardous conditions in agriculture, domestic labor, mining,
Tabaco farms, and other sectors. (Hrw.org). Evidently this is a... Show more content on

What are specific Multinational corporations in the world that use child labor? An example is the
multinational chocolate makers are heavily dependent on West Africa as mentioned. More than
70% of the world s cocoa is grown in the region . (Fortune.com) An example In the Asian region
includes the world s most popular food and companies, everyday companies including AFAMSA,
ADM, Colgate Palmolive, Elevance, Kellogg s, NestlГ©, Procter Gamble, Reckitt Benckiser and
Unilever. All use products containing palm oil tainted by shocking human rightsabuses in
Indonesia, with children as young as eight working. (amnesty.org). These are just several examples
of many MNC s using child labor. Child labor does exists throughout the world predominately in the
African and Asian regions.
Another concept is MNCs create more child labor based off expansion. Expansion is the driving
force of profit. Profit tends to be the end outcome for any corporation otherwise, expansion and FDI
would never exist. As mentioned before, more expansion means more

Safety Case Study
A business may have to sometimes alienate some customers for the betterment of their workers
and business in general. There is controversy on the fact that delivery services like Domino s and
little Caesars do not deliver in locations that are deemed dangerous and have a color system
designated for certain neighborhoods. The American Civil Liberties Union criticizes this practice
as discriminatory as some of these neighborhoods are predominantly minority neighborhoods and
believe it is a racial issue. I believe that the issue is safety as some neighborhoods are more
dangerous and create a risk towards the delivery workers. As a customer of these neighborhoods it

On the other hand there is also the possibility of losing money by not delivering in certain
locations, and there is the moral risk of putting workers life at risk for continuing business. In a
situation such as this it will be hard to please both sides, as both a customers and workers
concern needs to be taken into account. As a business manager the main moral concern should
be the workers that it has employed and their safety even if sales are lost. For the long run of the
company you needs to find a balance, workers to feel safe, and customers to feel accommodated
by the business. As a business manager concern of the customer needs to be taken higher into
account. Having customers feel that they are being prejudiced against will be bad for public
perception. The company can also re asses the location to their franchise in the future to prevent the
current situation. When it comes to marketing programs the best recommend action for the
company to address is not to address the situation. Identifying the issue via marketing programs
would bring more scrutiny to the company. Plenty of other organizations are trouble by the same
situation and at no time it addressed the issue to the public view. Evaluation of the situation is
needed to identify if it is a regional issue only. If pressure from the government agencies begins to
mount the next option is to address the issue via public service

Annexation Of Hawaii Essay
Annexation of Hawaii
John L. Stevens came to the island of Oahu in September 1889, acting as the U.S. Minister to
Hawaii. While his mission in Hawaii was not clearly stated, his political actions on the islands
clearly showed that Stevens thought that the annexation of Hawaii was proper and inevitable.
Stevens held firm beliefs about the future of Hawaii in the hands of the United States. From the
start of his stay in Hawaii, Stevens made it clear whose side he was on in the political war. He
would openly criticize Hawaii s monarchy, and at times would refer to Queen Liliuokalani and her
advisors as incompetent (2). Stevens may have not held anything against the Queen herself or any

either before or after his departure for Hawaii regarding attempts at achieving annexation in the
Hawaiian Nation. (3) Stevens had many reasons of his own to support annexation. When he
arrived in the islands, he saw many great economic and military advantages to having Hawaii
annexed as a state. He realized that Hawaii in itself was a growing industry, soon to be had as a
major sugar producer in the world at the time. Plus, Hawaii offered a huge strategic position,
lying in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, which could serve as a docking point for many U.S.
warships. Stevens himself felt that he was doing good in helping an expanding America grow to
even greater proportions by backing annexation in the islands.
Though the final stages of annexation in Hawaii were violent to a certain extent, Stevens would
have proclaimed that since there was no heavy military action on either side of the dispute, which
the annexation of Hawaii came easily and without unnecessary action involved to obtain his goal.
He would have most likely agreed to the political schemes forced upon the monarchy by those in
favor of annexation were necessary and

The Wages For Equal Wages
Mind the (Pay) Gap Men in Travis Country, and all over the United States, are almost always paid
higher wages than their female coworkers for doing the same work. Women have been fighting
for equal rights and equal pay since the 19th century and it is about time women and men doing
the same job are paid the same amount. The solution to this is simple: pay women and men equal
wages for equal work. This would seem to be common sense, but it is still something we are
fighting for. Census data shows median yearly income for men in Travis County is approximately
$10,000 higher than for women (kxan.com). Freda Bryson, a TexasState doctoral student and equal
pay advocate said, When I go to buy food or groceries, I don t get a womans discount, I pay the
same thing as a male pays. So why shouldn t my wages be the same? This quote should send a
message: by paying women less than men, many women simply cannot afford the same basic
living expenses as men can. One in four households with children is headed by a single woman
(austincf.org). If a single mom is making significantly less than a man doing the same work, it is
almost impossible to provide a child with a life above the poverty level. Many women in Travis
County are living more than 100% below the line of poverty, and over half of these women have
children to take care of as well. How can you take care of a child if you cannot even afford to take
care of yourself? The genderpay gap is unacceptable and changes needs to be

Grief Counseling Research Paper
GRIEF COUNSELING IN A GROUP SETTING5
Interpersonal Counseling
Interpersonal Counseling in a group setting helps initiate the mourning process and encourages the
grieving individual to regain interests and re establish relationships (MacNair‐Semands, 2004).
Interpersonal group counselors encourage college students to discuss the events surrounding their
loss. In doing so, college students are allowed the opportunity to reflect on their feelings connected
to their loss and deal with their loss. Additionally, interpersonal group counselingallows the college
students to examine the relationships I their lives. This technique allows the college student to see
how grief may be negatively affecting their current relationships and find ways to maintain positive
relationships. The ultimate goal of interpersonal group counseling is to establish stability for the
college student and encourage them to focus on their present and what steps they can take to
enhance their lives, now. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The purpose of psychodynamic group counseling is to help college students acknowledge and
understanding unresolved conflict, which may be contributing to their prolonged periods of grief
(Kipnes, et al., 2002). Psychodynamic group counseling provides the support needed for college
students to resolve conflict and manage their emotions (Piper, et al., 2001). Counselors achieve
this goal by creating an environment that allows college students to deal with their present
experiences of loss by providing a reward system for the college students efforts to cope with loss
(Ogrodniczuk, et al., 2003). Therefore, group counseling is beneficial for dealing with grief.

Goffman s Contributions On The Theory Of Social Stigma
I have chosen to examine Irving Goffman s contributions to the theory of social stigma, specifically
through the perspectives presented in Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity. My
analysis of this work leads me to imagine communication as a mask, possessing the ability to shield
the wearer s actual social identityfrom observers.
This metaphor has utility because it provides a concrete way to conceptualize a portion of the
complex web of presentation and interpretations that accompany communicative interaction with an
individual who is perceived to have an attribute that positions them as significantly other. When I
originally proposed communication as a mask, I was envisioning the mask as noise designed to act
as a barrier to communication. However, once I became aware of Goffman s work, I realized that
this particular conception of communication provides specific advantages for the stigmatized in a
way that acknowledges the constant vigilance and level of effort that a stigmatized individual must
put forth in order to engage with a normal without revealing their attribute. Thus, I have chosen this
perspective because it disturbed my default understanding of communication as an exchange
between two normals. It may enable those who use it to develop insight into the experiences of
those who perceive communicative interactions differently then themselves.
Goffman s Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life (2007) considers even the most mundane

In this paper I will show some of Jung s back ground, his theory, and speak of his contribution to
the world of psychology. His contribution was a great one, and it was said that many of his
theories were more complicated than many of the other psychologists of his time. As I read about
him, I began to appreciate his passion for this subject.
There were a few reasons that I chose him. First, I think it s amazing his contribution to figuring
out, personality types. Second, I find it interesting that he was spiritual, and incorporated some of
that spirituality to his theories. He was one of the theorists that took an approach to the ... Show

Personality Psychology helps an individual to define their human nature, and how that nature is
different from other people, but in various similar situations. For example, based on
Jung s theory of personality, an introvert may be shy, compared to an extrovert, when placed in a
social setting. Personality Psychology also might help a person to have a strong sense of oneself,
may assist them in understanding why they cope certain ways, or react to particular things that
happen. A therapist knowing this psychology can also shed light to their clients when helping
them to cope with life. According to Jung s theory, we all have some introversion, and some
extroversion, but are primarily one or the other. This is where people are similar. Human beings are
like each other because of our ability to have set backs, fears, failure, and have emotions that come
from within, when we experience hardship in life. Whether we react in an introverted way (inward
thought), versus extroverted (outward thought), is imperative and shows our similarity as well.
That we must all go through some form of process mentally, as a coping mechanism, when things
happen to us, or around us. Jung s theory on the Persona, anima, animus, shadow, and the
self(Ashford, 2011), can differentiate us as human beings.
Upon reading about the Shadow, it reminded me of the darker side of us. The part of people that is

Mountaintop Removal And Valley Filling
Mountaintop removal and valley filling is the long time process of mining for coal, primarily in
southern Appalachia. In mountaintop removal the tops of mountains are removed to expose the
layer of coal. The earth that is removed from the mountaintop is then disposed in nearby valleys.
Following the removal of the coalfrom the mountain, the coal is washed ; the liquid that is left
over after cleaning the coal is called coal slurry. This process of reshaping mountains and valleys
has dangerous and everlasting effects on the ecology and aesthetic value of the mountain. Citizens
in rural Appalachia typically rely on water from small streams in order to have a clean water supply
for their families. Due to the misshapen landscape caused by mountaintop removal and runoff from
coal slurries, communities surrounding mountaintop removal sites and valley fill typically
experience contaminated water. Even though mountaintop removal coal mining is an effective way
to remove the entire amount of coal from a mountain, mountain top removal should be strictly
regulated by the government because the water quality of persons in areas surrounding removal
sites are being demolished and flow rates of streams and stream ecosystems are being disturbed
due to the nature of mountain top removal and valley filling. To begin, it is important to discuss
the rights water uses have in areas surrounding mountain top removal sites as well as the trade offs
water uses make in dealing with large coal

authority has ever limited the sacraments to that number. The central sacrament is the Eucharist;
the others are baptism, normally by immersion; confirmation, which follows baptism immediately in

The Greek Orthodox church admits married men to the priesthood. Bishops, however, are elected

The Greek Orthodox religion differs for many other religions in that they express prayers and

were looked upon as sacrilegious in that they resemble idols, which were prohibited in the old

The study surveyed participants attitudes towards organizations after watching advertisements by
organizations. The advertisements varied in levels of guilt evoked. The purpose of the study was
to see how appealing to guilt would influence the effectiveness of the advertisement. What the
researchers found was guilt appeals can have positive effects on behavioral intentions, notably
donating behavior (2007, p. 729). This suggests that when someone feels guilty, they want to get
rid of the guilt and believe that they can do so through their own actions and help society. Even
though the study is focused on donations, the concept regarding an advertisement s effectiveness
is the same. Donating money is a simple action, since it is sometimes a one time thing people do,

Connotation Of The Word Judgement Essay
Words have various connotations, and these connotations help people to perceive implications
behind a specific sentence. Whether read or spoken, the word esteemed holds more credibility
associated than famous, just as plain can be viewed more negatively than simple. Take out the
words and people start depending on other clues to formulate an opinion on a particular person or
situation. Body language can be a major part of this judgement, conveying mood, comfortability,
formality, and so on. Clothing choice, too, contributes to the way people perceive one another.
People use cliche titles such as hispter, emo, and basic to describe a person, going off of wardrobe

  • 2. Strategies of Youth Justice Policies Here we will look at the strategies of youth justice policies and practice with the ideological motivations and identify and evaluate the social and political context. The 1908 Child Act; Children and Young Persons Act, the Criminal Justice Act; Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003 will be discussed. Youth justice is a creature of historical development. The structure of the industry is full of dominant philosophies which have seeped into the foundations, which still monopolise and govern contemporary practice and although new perspectives have emerged over the recent history, it is necessary to trace the evolution over the last century to understand the logic behind the practice. The strategies of youth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... More young people and pre delinquent children were being drawn into the net of juvenile justice and Springhall (1986) remarked that the impact of the 1933 Children and Young Persons Act seemed to direct young people to court, rather than divert, under the assumption that care and treatment would follow (cited in Muncie, 2009). The system legitimised by welfare is always likely to come under attack from those seeking more a punitive and retributive response. Over the 1950s and 1960s local authority care provided attendance centres for the neglected and detention centres established by the impact of the Criminal Justice Act 1948, retraining offenders through punitive labour brought confusion concerning the control and treatment of juveniles. The Children and Young Persons (Amended) Act 1952 allowing courts to remand offenders to local authorities and those supervised following release on license from approved schools had effectively created two strategies in which the system of control (the criminal justice system) and care (welfare system) became intertwined. An enlarged welfare state, part of the Labour Party s vision, brought about the highly controversial 1969 Children and Young Persons Act seeking alternatives to detention by care orders, proceedings and treatment along with advocating a ... • 5. Essay on Langston Hughes The Weary Blues Langston Hughes The Weary Blues Jazz music is often associated with long, lazy melodies and ornate rhythmical patterns. The Blues, a type of jazz, also follows this similar style. Langston Hughes poem, The Weary Blues, is no exception. The sound qualities that make up Hughes work are intricate, yet quite apparent. Hughes use of consonance, assonance, onomatopoeia, and rhyme in The Weary Bluesgives the poem a deep feeling of sorrow while, at the same time, allows the reader to feel as if he or she is actually listening to the blues sung by the poem s character. The Blues musical move was prominent during the 1920s and 30s, a time known as the Harlem Renaissance. Blues music characteristically told the story of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another place that consonance is apparent is in line 5, ?pale, dull pallor of an old gas light. The sticky l sounds are difficult to produce off of the tongue quickly; therefore, these words slow the poem down. This is typical of the blues. The slow sounds of blues music are incorporated in the words of this poem. It seems as if the words with the l sounds get extra emphasis, as well, because they are so difficult to pronounce. Added strength through word sounds helps boost the poem s glumness. Line 10 is another excellent example of consonance in The Weary Blues. The m and p sounds of He made that poor piano moan with melody give the poem a juxtaposition of warm sounds from the m to aggressive tones with the sharp p. This is a nice element as it is characteristic of blues music, as well. Usually there are some elements of comfort and disdain within the blues. The contrast of the m and p sounds highlights this very well. There is a great amount of assonance in The Weary Blues. The first example of assonance comes right away in the poem. Line 1 opens with the long o sound in Droning a drowsy syncopated tune and continues with Rocking back and forth to a mellow croon in line 2. Poe employs a technique of keeping the audience in the dark about what the main character is thinking. There is a difference drawn between characters that use logic and characters that use intuition. Intuition is always shown to have its short comings and logical thinking is shown to get the main characters further into solving a case. In the Purloined Letter Poe gives the reader little detail of how Dupin is solving the case in his head, at first. Dupin is a character that doesn t rely on the plain facts in front of him. He uses psychological analysis, forensics and looks deeper into the details of a crime. Throughout the whole short story the Prefect of the police is explaining how detailed his investigation was and how baffled he still was. This gives us the sense that the Prefect is not in the least unintelligent. At the end of his explanation Dupin already has the letter and hands it over to the Prefect for the some of his earnings. In that case, replied Dupin, opening a drawer, and producing a cheque book, you may as well fill me up a cheque for the amount mentioned. When you have signed it, I will hand you the letter. (3) Stevens had many reasons of his own to support annexation. When he arrived in the islands, he saw many great economic and military advantages to having Hawaii annexed as a state. He realized that Hawaii in itself was a growing industry, soon to be had as a major sugar producer in the world at the time. Plus, Hawaii offered a huge strategic position, lying in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, which could serve as a docking point for many U.S. warships. Stevens himself felt that he was doing good in helping an expanding America grow to even greater proportions by backing annexation in the islands. Though the final stages of annexation in Hawaii were violent to a certain extent, Stevens would have proclaimed that since there was no heavy military action on either side of the dispute, which the annexation of Hawaii came easily and without unnecessary action involved to obtain his goal. • 29. The Wages For Equal Wages Mind the (Pay) Gap Men in Travis Country, and all over the United States, are almost always paid higher wages than their female coworkers for doing the same work. Women have been fighting for equal rights and equal pay since the 19th century and it is about time women and men doing the same job are paid the same amount. The solution to this is simple: pay women and men equal wages for equal work. This would seem to be common sense, but it is still something we are fighting for. Census data shows median yearly income for men in Travis County is approximately $10,000 higher than for women (kxan.com). Freda Bryson, a TexasState doctoral student and equal pay advocate said, When I go to buy food or groceries, I don t get a womans discount, I pay the same thing as a male pays. So why shouldn t my wages be the same? This quote should send a message: by paying women less than men, many women simply cannot afford the same basic living expenses as men can. One in four households with children is headed by a single woman (austincf.org). If a single mom is making significantly less than a man doing the same work, it is almost impossible to provide a child with a life above the poverty level. Many women in Travis County are living more than 100% below the line of poverty, and over half of these women have children to take care of as well. How can you take care of a child if you cannot even afford to take care of yourself? The genderpay gap is unacceptable and changes needs to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. Goffman s Contributions On The Theory Of Social Stigma I have chosen to examine Irving Goffman s contributions to the theory of social stigma, specifically through the perspectives presented in Stigma: Notes on the Management of Spoiled Identity. My analysis of this work leads me to imagine communication as a mask, possessing the ability to shield the wearer s actual social identityfrom observers. This metaphor has utility because it provides a concrete way to conceptualize a portion of the complex web of presentation and interpretations that accompany communicative interaction with an individual who is perceived to have an attribute that positions them as significantly other. When I originally proposed communication as a mask, I was envisioning the mask as noise designed to act as a barrier to communication. However, once I became aware of Goffman s work, I realized that this particular conception of communication provides specific advantages for the stigmatized in a way that acknowledges the constant vigilance and level of effort that a stigmatized individual must put forth in order to engage with a normal without revealing their attribute. Thus, I have chosen this perspective because it disturbed my default understanding of communication as an exchange between two normals. It may enable those who use it to develop insight into the experiences of those who perceive communicative interactions differently then themselves. Personality Psychology helps an individual to define their human nature, and how that nature is different from other people, but in various similar situations. For example, based on Jung s theory of personality, an introvert may be shy, compared to an extrovert, when placed in a social setting. Personality Psychology also might help a person to have a strong sense of oneself, may assist them in understanding why they cope certain ways, or react to particular things that happen. A therapist knowing this psychology can also shed light to their clients when helping them to cope with life. According to Jung s theory, we all have some introversion, and some extroversion, but are primarily one or the other. This is where people are similar. Human beings are like each other because of our ability to have set backs, fears, failure, and have emotions that come from within, when we experience hardship in life. Whether we react in an introverted way (inward thought), versus extroverted (outward thought), is imperative and shows our similarity as well. That we must all go through some form of process mentally, as a coping mechanism, when things happen to us, or around us. In mountaintop removal the tops of mountains are removed to expose the layer of coal. The earth that is removed from the mountaintop is then disposed in nearby valleys. Following the removal of the coalfrom the mountain, the coal is washed ; the liquid that is left over after cleaning the coal is called coal slurry. This process of reshaping mountains and valleys has dangerous and everlasting effects on the ecology and aesthetic value of the mountain. Citizens in rural Appalachia typically rely on water from small streams in order to have a clean water supply for their families. Due to the misshapen landscape caused by mountaintop removal and runoff from coal slurries, communities surrounding mountaintop removal sites and valley fill typically experience contaminated water. Even though mountaintop removal coal mining is an effective way to remove the entire amount of coal from a mountain, mountain top removal should be strictly regulated by the government because the water quality of persons in areas surrounding removal sites are being demolished and flow rates of streams and stream ecosystems are being disturbed due to the nature of mountain top removal and valley filling. This suggests that when someone feels guilty, they want to get rid of the guilt and believe that they can do so through their own actions and help society. Even though the study is focused on donations, the concept regarding an advertisement s effectiveness is the same.
