A short story called The Third Wish is greatly influenced by magic and based around the
existence of the power. In The Third Wish, a man is granted three wishes by the King of the
Forest and uses them to grant himself happiness but eventually wishes that happiness away.
Throughout the various stories that include magic, its existence is often acknowledged or to be
later discovered in the story. In The Third Wish magic seems to be apparent to the main character
as demonstrated in this quote, Well, Sir, he said threateningly, I see you are presumptuous enough
to know some of the laws of magic (Aiken 674). In the short story, the main character appears to
understand magic and feel comfortable enough to not be startled by a swan transforming into a
human. He seems unphased by the occurrence and is apparently knowledgeable to ask for three
