The Decline of Electoral Participation Among Young Canadians Since a robust voter turnout is
instrumental to the functioning of a healthy democracy, the ongoing decline of youth voter
turnout in Canada is highly alarming. According to the Canadian Election Study, the reported
voter turnout among Canadians aged 18 to 24 dropped from 83 percent in 1974 to 60 percent in
2000 (Barnes and Virgint, 2010). The aim of this paper is to explain this decline. While it is
generally accepted that people s propensity to vote increases as they age in their life cycle , it does
not provide an adequate explanation for the decline of voter turnout among young Canadians. This
paper argues that the decline of youth electoral participation in Canada is, by and large,
generational in nature it can be attributed by the underlying characteristics of the youth generation.
Young Canadians are more apathetic towards the political process, have a lower level of political
knowledge, and view votingas less of a moral obligation than older Canadians and young
Canadians in past generations. For the purposes of this paper, young Canadians will be defined
broadly as the cohort of Canadians aged 18 to 27. The paper will first briefly explain why a
declining youth turnout is problematic to Canadian democracy. It will then refute two prevalent
explanations to the decline of the Canadian youth voter turnout that emphasize the role of political

Ronald Reagan was a democrat that became president during the Cold War times. Many people
reference his presidency but don t know about the ideals and actions he undertook as president.
Other than being known as the Great Communicator , Reagan is also known for other things that

but sadly tripled the national debt, his foreign policy, and the Iran contra scandal. Reaganomics

would be reduced on businesses so that they have more reason to continue to make products in
America which would allow for more jobs and economic gain. This policy also succeeded and

problems and are only different in a few respects. Each period is marked by a massive run ups in
asset prices followed by a crash in the stock market and sent both debt and equity markets down.
These periods are said to be the worse economic downturn in the country s history. During the great
depression, as banks failed and threatened to shut down the financial system altogether, President
Franklin Roosevelt moved quickly and effectively to address the most dangerous financial crisis of
the Great depression. The massive stock market collapse that began in October 1929 erased
massive amounts of wealth and because many banks had invested heavily in the markets, and had
lent recklessly to speculative investors, the banks found themselves without sufficient capital and in
many cases without reserves. He created the New Deal which responded to an unemployment rate
that had reached 25 percent, and in some cities as much as 75 percent. He signed the Emergency
Banking Act, which allowed inspectors to evaluate troubled banks and decide whether or not they
could reopen. The Glass Steagall Act created a barrier between commercial and investment banking
and established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which guaranteed that citizens would
not lose their bank deposits even if a bank failed.

A wave of nostalgia washed over me when I opened the door to the Durbin Gallery. Waxy, bright,
colorful, and detailed pieces ornamented the white walled room. I smelt the same smell I did
when I was a student digging through my pencil box or when I was creating a colorful
masterpiece during my free time as a child. As I walked around the gallery and saw the pieces
that the artist, Herb Williams, created and displayed in his exhibit, Master Heist. I saw a can of
Campbell s Chicken Noodle Soup, a recreation of Vincent van Goghs The Starry Night, word
bubbles with text, and many more. Williams brought me back to my childhood and amazed me
within a matter of seconds of entering the exhibit by using familiar objects to make familiar
works of art. A thought I continuously had while walking around the exhibit was of how cool it
was to see how one individual used crayons, something I ve always correlated as a tool used to
make art, to create art. The individual pieces when observed from a distance looked to me to be
a vibrant printed picture. However, at a closer glance, it was easy to tell that it was not printed,
and that it was composed of an object that most all viewers can relate to in some way. The artist
took crayons in their most simplistic form, cylinders of wax, to a new level. The thousands of
crayons were arranged by color and placed specifically with either the point or flat ends facing
outwardly to create depth and movement in the pieces. This further pushed my
