The dancer is the first white female the Invisible Man encounters. Although it was known that
white females were considered to be of a higher status than black women at the time, they were
looked upon as possessions and as second class citizens. At this point in the novel, the boys are
shoved to the center of the circle, surrounded by the men. The fear that the boys and the narrator
feel is obvious in his descriptions, as is the uncertainty of their situation. When they see the
naked white woman they are in an unfeasible disagreement, as he says, Then I became aware of
the clarinet playing and the big shots yelling at us. Some threatened us if we looked and others
if we did not, (Ellison, 16). The vivid image of these powerful men threatening the boys is all too
real. Through his writing, we can sense his conflict as he describes the way the dancer looks,
and we can also tell he is attracted to her by the way he describes the curves of her body. Yet we
can also see that the dancer herself is in as much uncertainty as the boys; the narrator tells us
how the woman is chased and harrassed by the men, who grabbed her and toss her into the air,
and that through her facade he can see, ...above her, fixed smiling lips i saw the terror and disgust
in her eyes, almost like my own terror and that which I saw in some of the other boys, (Ellison, 17).
