Throughout Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathan Edwards uses
multiple literary devices to disarm his listeners. One literary device he uses is

horrors of hell by referencing common terms to make the listener have a visual

a bow and arrow as a comparison to an angry God (126). The bow and arrow was

The issue of the origins of consciousness has been a problem that has philosophers
and scientists alike, puzzled for years. Is it a matter of science? Can it be explained
through neurobiological processes or is it just something that simply cannot be
reduced to words? Rene Descartes had struggled to explain this problem through his
idea of substance dualism. This idea states that the mind and body are of two separate
worlds, the physical world and the mental world. He then goes on by describing
himself as a thinking thing and questions the existence with the mind and body thus
bringing the questions of the material and the immaterial. From this sprouts the mind
body problem, the connection between mental phenomena and the physical world on
which the mind depends. In this philosophical essay, I will question whether the
mind and body coexist or if they are two separate entities that make us who we are.
One of the first arguments made in Cartesian Dualism is the argument of doubt.
Descartes starts to doubt the perception of his body, but handedly cannot conceive the
possibility that he is without a mind. This is because he of the very act of doubting

In the society named Oceania, magnificently crafted by George Orwell in his
dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty Four, the leadership of the controlling party,
Ingsoc, claims to be ameliorating the lives of all people living under its
benevolence. However, the degree to which each individual benefits from Ingsoc s
largesse, varies depending upon a person s status within Oceania. For example, the
simple prole, short for proletariat, resides at the bottom of Oceania s social heap
and is the largest Ingsoc group. In the middle strata, are the educated workers called
the Party comrades. Near the top of the pecking order are the elite Inner Party
members, comprising the smallest group within Ingsoc. Lastly, Big Brother, who

Saint Sebastian Interceding For The Plague Stricken
The artwork that I would like to discuss is Saint Sebastian Interceding for the
Plague Stricken, an oil painting done in the 1490s by Josse Lieferinxe a South
Netherlands artist. ( Saint Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken. ) I went to
the Walter Art Museum and this image hidden it was in the third floor in the corner.
As for the comparison I decided to choose the right, Saint Sebastian and the Bishop
Saint, and for the third artwork that we had discussed in class that I d like to discuss
is the Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch. The main image is Saint
Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken. However what these artworks have in
common is that they have a lot of movement and have the same religion. Also each
artwork conveys different the messages and they have a different function.
First when I saw the Saint Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken I
immediately knew it that the painting had to do with the Black Death. The Black
Death is widely known even today because so many people were infected and it s a
major part of history. I remember seeing it in movies, history and documentary
channels. The plague killed nearly one third population of Europe. ( The Black

painting Christians were experiencing and witnessing sudden death because of the
