Cognitive distortions are basically negative and inaccurate thoughts that our minds convince us of
being true. Everyone gets these kinds of thoughts whether we realize it or not and for some people
they occur more often than others. A simple example of this is someone who fails at one thing and
then thinks or believes that they are failure at everything. Some of these thoughts may be much
more subtle but still have a huge effect on us and our thought process. It s an important topic to
discuss because as we learn more about the different kinds of cognitive distortions we can learn how
to prevent them or change the thoughts. By learning to refute these thoughts we can replace them ...
Impact of the Cognitive Distortion
The immediate impact this negative thought has on me is feeling like a failure and just giving
in. I feel pretty defeated and upset at myself for not being stronger and avoiding temptation .
After this kind of thought occurs and once I m done eating, I initially feel so letdown and angry
at myself but the next day I use it as a motivation to go forward and not repeat it, though I do find
myself occasionally coming back to it, almost as a cycle.
Automatic Negative Thought
Another negative thought(s) I find myself having often is not being good enough. This is
something that I usually find myself thinking a lot about after an altercation or disagreement with
someone. There have been a few instances in my life when I m put in a position where someone I
care for picks someone else over me, this being both emotional and not. I have found that this is
thought I have a lot in my personal relationships and many times I have this thought after a small
incident or argument. I think this is tendency I have a lot, to think negatively about myself, when
small problems occur.

This would fall under over generalization. I believe that me taking a small argument or incident that
many times has nothing to do with myself, and turning on to negative thought about myself not

have been able to learn about what kinds of elements specific stars are composed of, how distant

knowledge but there were issues in getting the information that we needed. The earths atmosphere
was the biggest issue that was encountered. As light comes through our atmosphere the
wavelengths at the shorter end of the spectrum like blue and violet are more easily scattered than
longer wavelengths like red, orange, and yellow that are more difficult to scatter. This means that
we detect more light that is toward the yellow end of the spectrum rather than the true colors that
were actually emitted. To fix the problem we would have to remove the atmosphere. That was not
an actual option for scientists, so they had to send telescopes up into space. Once scientists were

Sense and Sensibility written by Jane Austen is a novel that does not only deal with two sister s
love matters, but how two dissimilar personalities respond to society and love. The theme of
society vs. sense is existed throughout the novel because it is concerned with the ruling of one s
feelings, or the incapability to do so. Declaring love for someone, nurturing one s self and not
caring what people think is important in expressing this kind of social duty. (Pam Morris, 43) This
kind of theme is always present, with some dramatization, within Emma Thompson s 1995 film
adaption. Literary critic Deborah Kaplan argues that Thompson s film adaption demonstrates
harlequinization , where the narrative structure of the mass market structure , where a lot of
people really like them, it focuses on a hero and a heroin s courtship at the expense of the other
characters and experiences. Kaplan is stating that the film is negative because some characters are
underrepresented. She s right, but at the same time it is to be expected because it is a film
adaption. I argue that Kaplan is right, the film adaption does demonstrate this harlequinization to

of heroines, sisters with dissimilar personalities. Marriage is a way to alter wealth for women, it

The mood that is created Edgar Allan Poe in his poem The Raven is somewhat sad and ominous.
The author creates this mood by relaying the tale through the eyes of a man in mourning and

atmosphere inside and outside of the home where the man is living appears dark and dreary

the man is reading also contributes to the mood, it is very late at night, he is alone and grieving.

description of the curtains, or just the impression left by the author, the reader recognizes the
mood in the house is dark. The description of the surroundings of the home where the man lives
is also dark. It is a December night and pitch black outside, it obviously must be windy and cold
because the man originally thinks the wind may have caused the tapping but then realizes it must

Abstract
This study examined visual perception and the rates at which global and local features are
reacted to with an aim of replicating and validating a previous experiment conducted by Navon
(1977) to see if global processing was faster than local processing. There was 222 University of
Newcastle students participating in the experiment, partaking in two phases, one centred round
global processing, the other around local processing, where there reaction times were recorded
using a computer program and imputed into a data worksheet. Results indicated that, as predicted,

It was therefore hypothesised that the reaction times for global judgments would be faster than the
reaction times of local judgments. It was also hypothesised that consistent stimuli would be faster
than conflicting stimuli in the local tasks.
Method
Participants
The sample for this study consisted of 222 participants who were second year psychology students
from the University of Newcastle. All students were participating as part of a course requirement
and all had given their consent to participating in the study.
Design
The independent variables consisted of 3 consistency types (contingent, neutral and conflicting
displays). The dependant variable was the reaction time of participants.
Apparatus
A computerised program SuperLab Pro and a keyboard was required in order to record reaction
times.
Stimuli
In the first phase of this study that was based around recognising global features, the letters used
were large H s or S s. In the second phase, global letters of H, S and O were used and were made up
of smaller H s or S s, the local characters. These make up the 3 stimulus types: congruent, neutral
and conflicting. The large and small letters could be combined to create 3 types of displays: 1)
Consistent, where the large and small letters were the same (H printed from small H s, or S made
