through some cowardice and unmanliness on our part, since we did not save you, or you save
yourself, when it was possible (45e 46e). This quote from the text Crito, written by Plato, directly
illustrates Crito s claim of feeling ashamed on Socrates behalf and on behalf of his friends, if what
happened was due to cowardice on their part. In order for us to be able to validate this argument
as persuasive or not, we must first take a look at the definitions of courage and manliness.
Plato more clearly discusses these attributes of courage and manliness in one of his other works,
Laches. In the Laches, Socrates engages two generals, Nicias and Laches, in conversation.
Laches first defines a man of courage as one who does not run away from an enemy. So if Crito
thought it was cowardly of Socrates to take his punishment instead of escaping that brings up a
major contradiction in Laches definition. As we know, Socrates decides to stay and face his
allegations in court, and eventually die, instead of attempting an escape. This makes him a man of

Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter Absurd Influences in Theatre There are a wide variety of
theatrical movements that have occurred over time. One of these includes the theatre of the absurd.
Theater of the absurd refers to the literary movement in drama popular throughout European
countries from the 1940s to approximately 1989. A definition of the term absurdism is referred to a
literary and philosophical movement that flourished after the Second World War and bears a close
relationship to Existentialism. Absurdism s signature attitude is therefore black humor, an
ambiguous mixture of tragic pathos and preposterous comedy, which finds it compelling literary
expression in the work of authors such as Samuel Beckett ( Absurdism 3). In this paper, I will
explore the development of absurdism in two different plays, The Room and Waiting for Godot.
The absurdist type of plays often seek to explore the spiritual loneliness, isolation, and anxiety of
the down and outs of society. Theater of the Absurd are often pointless and contain no
underlying messages. They have been described as moving in a circle with no true plot. The
movement of the absurd commonly refers to the work of a group of dramatists who first emerged
during and after World War II. I have choose to pick a play from Samuel Beckett as well as Harold
Pinter to observe their influence on the movement of absurd theatre.

its funding primarily through federal and local taxation totaling $208 billion (Deliotte).
However, this large amount of spending is not reflected in the quality of healthcare provided to
Brazilians. Brazil has an estimated 2.5 hospital beds per 1,000 citizens and the beds are of bad
quality and are poorly distributed (Deliotte). Brazil s Federal Medical Council conducted a
survey that showed 93% of Brazilians considered the healthcare systems to be either very bad or
mediocre (Deliotte). While more Brazilians have access to healthcare than ever before, the quality
of care does not meet the requirements that would allow the system to be truly effective. Despite its

A Student At Hampton University
I wish I could say it still surprises me when I mentioned to people that I attended an HBCU
(Historically Black College/University), some of them have no idea they exist. Often, it turns into
a conversation starter, which usually evolves into a meaningful educational moment about the
history of HBCU s. However, occasionally I find myself becoming frustrated when ask the
question why in a way that questions the validity and or need for HBCU s in 2016. As a student
at Hampton University I did not fully realize the impact it would have on me, but looking back, it
is clear to me that those experiences have shaped who I ve grown into today, and strongly influence
to my desire to pursue a career in environmental science education.
My first class in Marine and Environmental Science department at Hampton University turned out
be different than I expected. Instead of a large lecture hall full of students, I entered a small
classroom with approximately 15 students. It was a pleasant surprise to see the small group of
students, who shared a cultural resemblance and has similar interests. Up until then, typically
when I told someone I wanted to be a marine scientist, the response was oh that nice or so you
want to play with fish? So being at Hampton with likeminded students that I could relate to made
the transition form high school to college easier than I anticipated. There was a feeling of
