Essay about Analysis of The Open Boat by Stephen Crane
Analysis of The Open Boat by Stephen Crane
Story: The Open Boat, 1897
Author: Stephen Crane (1871 1900)
Central Character: There is no real central character in this story. All the men on the boat are spoken
about more or less equally and no prominent character jumps out at the reader as being the central
character. Although more emphasis is put onto the correspondent, and Billie the oiler.
Other Character: The cook: bails water from boat. Billie the oiler: steers and rows boat, is the
only of the men that does not make it alive to land. The correspondent: Also helps steer and row
boat. Injured captain: gives commands to the crew as he lies against the water jar speaking with a
low and calm voice. Unnamed people on land: Coat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After swearing into the sea the correspondent remembers a rhyme from his childhood that he
once did not care about but now does. The captain awakes and the oiler and the correspondent
switch spots. (7) The crew notices a village on the shore with a windmill. The men prepare to
jump from the ship and swim ashore. The captain holds onto the boat afraid he will drown. A man
appears on the beach naked and helps the men onto the shore. Everyone makes it except for Billie
the oiler who is found face down in the sand dead.
Tone: Crane has the ability to create multiple tones all in one passage. The tone seems to be a tad
dreary and tragic do to the fact that at any moment the men could all be drowned. Although, when
there is dialogue there is more of a straight forward and comic tone that demonstrates the increasing
friendship that is apparent to the reader, although the men refuse to mention it. This tone is
important because, Crane makes his characters out to be helpless against the element of nature and it
s over bearing on them. Thus, this bond between the men is the only thing they have to overcome
the environment.
Style: One thing that Crane has been known for is his use of imagery and similes in his writing.
His use of Imagery and detail bring a repeating setting like the ocean, more to life. The reader is
able to form a vivid picture in their mind with the Crane s use of adjectives and

Annotated Bison Research Paper
When you hear about an animal that stands up to six and a half feet tall and weigh 2,200 pounds;
with horns, two feet long curving up for fighting and able to run 40 miles per hour. You
automatically think a beast or monster, which you re not that far off. Being the largest land animal
in North America, bison have often been called beasts and as an above, they deserve that title.
5,000 years ago bison roamed, around 2,000 years ago, they reached their maximum range. When
Europeans arrived in North America, around 50 million bison roamed the continent. The bison has
gone through a bottleneck, but genetically hasn t declined much. The bison were once considered

Gestation for females is 285 days, although since they live in a herd, many cows wait for others
to give birth so it will be at the same time. The calves can stand and walk ten minutes after birth.
Once one of the numerous mammals of all time, by the late 1800s bison as we knew they were
nearly extinct. We began setting up preserves for them to live safely. We also bred bison in
captivity for their meat. Their life span has gone up since being in captivity; from 10 years in
the wilderness to around 20 in resorts. In the late 1900s farmers bred their meat bison with their
cattle, hoping to produce better meat. The problem? When you breed bison and cattle, you get
infertile hybrids. Therefore, leading to an impact on the bison population. In 1973, 14 bison were
released at the 125,000 acre Marine Corps Camp Pendleton in southern California. Today, about
120 of their descendants still roam those hills. Cattle genes are found in more than half the bison
population. Being in captivity and reproducing with cattle has made their gene pool be eradicated.
YellowStone is one of the reserves where bison still roam free. It is one of the very few herds that

Global Expansion
WFM is trying to develop a strategic plan to grow their business in an extremely competitive
market. They are searching for ways to sustain their strong financial and cultural capabilities
without losing revenue. Societal trends are shifting towards a healthier and environmental lifestyle,
which is substantially affecting the foodretail industry. To keep up with these societal trends,
grocery stores are incorporating organic and healthier food products into the stores. This poses as a
threat towards WFM, as their value proposition is substantially losing its worth. WFM must assess
the company from an internal and external perspective in order to determine if expanding their
locations into Canada will be worthwhile. There is a variety of risks that the company must assess
prior to implementation. If WFM decides to expand through a slow process, there is a possibility of
their competition dominating the industry. In addition, WFM must understand that this expansion
will require extensive capital and a new logistic/distribution strategy. The plan that WFM decides to
instill must keep their current organizational culture consistent. WFM has been named America s

There are a variety of sedatives available. Most of the standard and most popular sedatives have
been in existence for almost 100 years. (4)
The pediatric dental literature contains numerous reports on various medications
(e.g., nitrous oxide, opioids, benzodiazepines, chloral hydrate, barbiturates and antihistamines)
which have been administrated alone or in combination. (5 9)
Diazepam has been used to manage an uncooperative child in a dental setting.
It is a water insoluble benzodiazepine and requires the organic solvent propylene glycol to dissolve
it. Propylene glycol is most likely responsible for renoirritation and thrombophebitis that may occur
during injection. Diazepam undergoes metabolism to active desmethyl diazepam and oxazepam
that can produce sedation 6 8 hours after its initial administration (10).
Diazepam is sedative hypnotic agent and act in the brain on specific receptors enhancing
GABAergic transmission. Flumazenil can be used to reverse the sedative action of diazepam but
repeated doses are needed (11). Diazepam is very popular sedating agents due to its wide margin of
safety and it has wide therapeutic index. It has many pharmacological effects which include:
sedation, hypnosis, anesthesia, anticonvulsant effects, muscle relaxation and effects on respiration
and cardiovascular function. It is indicated

The Importance Of Harvesting Personal Identity
Clearly, even smart kids can be street (internet highway) thugs! Unfortunately, no police force
seems smart enough to halt this sinister revenge of the nerds.... (Hall, 2005). For many of us,
we do not realize how easy it is for a person to harvest the personal data of someone and never
even break into a person s home. When we talk about harvesting personal data, the image of a
huge combine rolling through the fields extracting the crops come to mind. For identity thieves,
this harvesting may not be so obvious but can be that simple. Some of the means that have been
used to harvest these stolen identities can be in public places where there is shoulder surfing

Stress Management Self Reflection Journal
SMART GOALS
For six weeks, September 7th to October 19th, I was determined to run five times a week in order
to relieve stress. This would increase my physical and emotional wellness, which would help me
reach my overall goal, to lower my level of stress by 3 5% (25% overall) each week for six weeks. I
was able to keep track of this by using an online stress test and journaling on a weekly basis. I
took an initial stress test before week one to establish a percentage of 49% (mild stress). Three
out of the five days of the week I was to run two miles, with the intention of lowering my time
each run. I kept track of this in my journal. Two out of the five days I did interval sprints on the
treadmill (Walk for 1 minute, sprint for 2 minutes) for 15 minutes. My intentions were to increase
my level of speed and incline each day, which I recorded in my journal as well. My six weekly

Not doing anything about it will just make me more stressed, but using stress relievers like
running help me move past that stress and focus on what s ahead of me. Right now I like to

Sports And Non-Student Athlete Analysis
Sports are an important part of daily life, and those who play them experience many benefits that
make them a more well rounded person. They not only provide multiple physical benefits, but
also tons of mental ones as well. I have been involved in baseball since the age of three and can
definitely notice these compared to non student athletes. The advantages of playing sports
include valuable life lessons, social skills, and future employment. First, playing sports teaches
many valuable life lessons such as responsibility and a hard work ethic. Responsibility is very
crucial in life, and people use it everyday. It ties into a student s academics because he needs to

Teamwork is a crucial aspect because a team wins together and loses together (Grown and

sports in particular, can positively affect aspects of personal development among young people,
such as self esteem, goal setting, and leadership (Aspen Play Project, 2015). Playing sports allow
students to make new friends; they realize other people also have the same interests as them.
Through teamwork, athletes experience leadership, another aspect of teamwork. Captains must
socialize with everyone consistently and usually need to be well liked. Leadership can also
affect how a team plays. It is hard to have a great team without superb leadership and teamwork,
making it necessary to have both. Socialization also includes what people do in their free time.
Compared to non athlete peers, females are more likely to disapprove of others using them
(Geier, 2012). According to Grown and Flown (2016), Teens who have practices, games, team

Assess the Debates About Whether or Not Reality Television...
This essay will assess the debate on whether or not reality television is becoming more like a form
of tabloidization; whether, reality TV has shifted from to entertaining the audience rather than
educating the audience. John Corner believes that television has greatly expanded its range of
images, depicting more of the real . He added that the shift in reality TV has employed factual
programming, such as an increase in documentaries. On the other hand, Richard Kilborn believes
that reality TV is a simulation of real life events through various forms of dramatic reconstruction...

The screening of these comments resulted in international media coverage. Like tabloids the stories
also depicted great focus on this issue, which gained a huge amount of public interest.
Tabloid has particular elements of reality TV as it draws on the staple ingredients of tabloid
journalism, such as the interplay between ordinary people and celebrities, or information and
entertainment (Hill, 15). The Jerry Springer Show is defined as a tabloid talk show when
dysfunctional families share their problems whilst the audience try to help them resolve their
situation. Reality TV programmes tend to use ordinary people; this enhances reality, because it
depicts real people with real problems, problems that are actually occurring in society. This can

Tabloidization is increasing becoming a word associated with news coverage, with stories printed
that are not seen as newsworthy rather much superficial . There is a big difference with between
tabloids and broadsheets, between popular culture and high culture. Tabloids, such The Sun relies
on celebrity culture to sell their papers, most of its content is based around celebrities, lifestyle and

CHAPTER 3 When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot become manifest,

Growing up I had generally experienced good health. Sure I had my share of runny noses, upset
stomachs and scraped knees but I was usually energetic, athletic, creative and optimistic about
life. Health, fitness and well being were important to my family. I came to value the importance
of a healthy lifestyle: good nutrition, proper sleep, exercise and sportsmanship. Education was
equally emphasized, a sound mind in a sound body, my grandfather repeatedly told my sister and
me. My grandfather, Pop Pop, was a gregarious, tall and handsome man with a gleam in his eye
who greatly valued education. I listened carefully to the conversations at the weekly Sunday night
dinner table when we visited my grandparents because I always learned something new. Even
though the prevailing rule was children are seen but not heard, Pop Pop always welcomed my
questions about economics, politics, history, human nature, art and literature. In fact, he
encouraged them. He was the smartest and wisest person I knew. I have never forgotten what my
grandfather wrote in my autograph book when I was in second grade, Good, better, best, never let
it rest, until your good is your better and your better is your best. I had been a good student,

Acting as a spiritual guide, Vasudeva teaches Siddhartha to learn from the river, which
realistically is Siddhartha for all aspects of life are unified. The two ferrymen come to think of
the river as ... the voice of life, the voice of Being, of perpetual Becoming (Hesse 88). The river
holds all the answers Siddhartha needs, including how to find love, gratitude and unity, while
serving as his spiritual guide to Nirvana. When Little Siddhartha leaves Siddhartha to follow his
own path, just as Siddhartha had done to his father, he uses two lessons that he learns from the
river to heal his wounded heart: patience and listening. These lessons bring him closer to
enlightenment and help him discover ... that love is the most important thing in the world (Hesse

The Arab Spring Uprisings Essay
The Arab Spring Uprisings are political protests against the governments of Tunisia, Egypt,
Libya, Yemen, Bahrain, Syria, Morocco, and Jordan. (Manfreda, ) The protests began in Tunisia
when a vegetable vendor set himself on fire in protest of the actions of the government. This
incident is said to have been the spark that fueled the action of the people to overthrow their
governments. This region is being watched by every country in the world. The world is watching
to see how it will affect their political and economic relationships with one another. Will the areas
become democratic nations or will they become shell states where terrorism runs rampant?

Juvenile Delinquency in the Classroom Essays
In depicting juvenile delinquency in the classroom, a few film directors portrayed novice teachers
desire to reach what the school system customarily labeled as problem students. These films
illustrate that these students are often categorized quickly and unfairly, and hopeful intervention by
a few caring and zealous teachers is enough to change their lives and attitudes for the better.
In the black and white 1955 film Blackboard Jungle, Mr. Dadier (played by Glenn Ford) was an
idealistic teacher on his first job in a tough urban mostly white male high school. The characters
were dressed in clothing of the time (jeans rolled up at the cuffs, tee shirts, bow ties, baseball
caps) and the boys wore their hair in the Elvis Presley ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dadier made a connection with Artie West, which occurred after hard work and many failed
teaching efforts. Mr. Dadier finally realized how to breathe life into his lessons so that they
became meaningful to his students. He also showed respect for them by allowing them to
showcase their talents in the Christmas program. These two strategies combined were enough to
earn the respect of the classroom s gang leader. Artie West, in turn, put the word out to the other
students to work hard and behave in this teacher s class. Other teachers shared in Mr. Dadier s
success by stating that the momentum created in Mr. Dadier s English class had carried over into
their own classes. This movie had a positive outcome. Continued hard work would be necessary for
the positive change to continue. Blackboard Jungle opened and closed with Bill Haley and the
Comet s Rock Around the Clock , which helped stir quite a ruckus so much so, the film was banned
from many theatres. But the film s central point was nevertheless clear: students who we think are
aimless and recalcitrant only need the thoughtful guidance of a concerned teacher to make learning
meaningful and rewarding.
Twelve years after the release of Blackboard Jungle , Sidney Portier starred in yet another film
featuring juvenile delinquency in the classroom. To Sir With Love , filmed in 1967 a time when

Although people generate a separate profile for each individual they meet, sometimes the

When this writing assignment was given to me, I sat and pondered about the three poems by
T.S. Elliot, Preludes Journey of the Magi and The Hollow Men and I wondered about which
poem I connected easiest with. I observed the poem, Preludes when I read the lines, And
newspapers from vacant lots...at the corner of the street...a lonely cab horse steams and stamps
(Elliot, Preludes, page 1156 lines 8 11) in which I realized they were in a bustling city. I thought
to myself, since living in a small town all my life, that in the end I would not be able to easily
connect with this piece of poetry. Then in flipping a couple of pages and finding the poem, The
Hollow Menand after reading this poem and have Mr. McGee exegeses this piece of poetry to our
class, I found to be a very empty and depressing pessimistic poem . Which most of my life, I have
had the privilege to look on the positive side of things and live a very joy filled life; which left me
with the last poem, Journey of the Magi. After reading this poem, out of the three, this was the
poem I had the strongest connection to and could relate to the best. T.S. Elliot s poem entitled,
Journey of the Magi was the best poem I could relate to due to the fact that it was a story I ve

Analysis Of The Movie Dark Souls Ost
Dark Souls OST
There was somewhat of a surprise for VGM listeners upon the release of the first trailer for Dark
Souls, FromSoftware s spiritual successor to Demon s souls. Even before any initial
announcement was made, it was easy to recognize the work of veteran freelance composer
Motoi Sakuraba, his trademark compositional style being so integral. Known primarily for his
virtuosic progressive rock compositions, Dark Souls was to be his first fully orchestral work
since the Baroque influenced Infinite Undiscovery nearly half a decade prior, and promised to be
his bleakest to match the somber and sorrowful medieval inspired world of the Souls series as
previously defined by composer Shinsuke Kita. And there s good news for those who may fear the
presence of one of Sakuraba s frequent collaborators, the synth orchestra: all of the instruments are
live. In addition, the grandeur of the collection of strings and brass receive a helping voice from
the surprise contribution of the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus. So, let s listen and hear if Motoi
Sakuraba s step out of his typical area will stand up or stumble.
Motoi Sakuraba announces his presence with the grandiose opening theme Prologue . Listeners
familiar with the soundtrack to Valkyrie Profile 2 will recognize the subtle build of harp and strings
into an unlashing of full orchestral tutti. However, it s the next track that truly defines the bleaker
timbre of this soundtrack. Firelink Shrine is the piece for the

Owning Exotic Pets Research Paper
Currently, in the pet market, a very prominent issue is present. Should private citizens be legally
allowed to own exotic pets? Owning exotic pets is dangerous, expensive, and cruel. The average
human should not be allowed to own exotic pets. In the first place, owning an exotic pet can be a
risk to your safety. The size of the animal does not determine how dangerous it is. In the article
Do You Really Want A Baby Tiger? the author Mia Lewis states It s not just big cats, poisonous
snakes and chimpanzees that can be harmful even smaller exotic pets can cause serious injuries.
How dangerous exotic pets can be is just another reason why they should not be owned by private
citizens.
Along with being dangerous, exotic pets are also very expensive. Buying exotic pets is costly
enough, but they also require a great deal of money to maintain. A strong, large, sturdy habitat
must be built for the animal along with buying large amounts of food. On page 7, paragraph 3,
Lewis states If keeping a dog can be time consuming and costly, that s nothing compared to a adult
lion or chimpanzee. Aside from the cost of keeping a exotic pet, they need lots of of time and
frequent attention that most people simply don t have. Exotic pets being ... Show more content on

The African Struggle Over Time
The African struggle over time has been a topic discussed by many scholars. In Walter Rodney s,
How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, he approaches the issue of how Africa s power was stolen
from them. Rodney focuses on the relationship between Africa and Europe and the effects of
exploitation on the African people by, reinforcing the conclusion that African development is
possible only on the basis of a radical break with the international capitalist system. The tone in
which the book is wrote uses Marxism, which can be controversial, to focus more on economic and

In Chapter three Rodney focuses on the colonial period in which Africa helped develop the capitalist
progression in Europe. Colonialism was not merely a system of exploitation but one whose
essential purpose was to repatriate the profit to the so called mother land, states Rodney. Chapter
four gives an historical background of Africa in 1885 and emphasizes on the value that came from
the enslavement of Africans. This time period holds a major significance to the underdevelopment
of Africa because of the Berlin conference. Africa was then divided up due to the scramble in
which Europeans fought over power. The fifth chapter argues that colonialism was the main factor
in underveloping Africa as a whole. Rodney argues that colonialism only did one thing, and that
was steal Africa s resources and strip them of their land. Europeans took so much from the Africans
and made sure to give nothing back which explains the type of relationship they had. In chapter six,
Rodney argues against past scholars who believed that colonialism had valuable outcomes in the
end. The author shows how the economic and political state Africa was left robbed due to

Jean Kilbourne Killing USftly Analysis
In the beginning God created man and woman, however, this creation has resulted in years of
gender inequality. Since the beginning of time, men have had more rights and freedom than
women. The two sexes have biological differences, however, these biological differences have
somehow resulted in different genderroles and ideals. Gender is a social construct that was created
to make society feel comfortable by having order. This social construct is constantly supported
through films, media, and even education. Gender inequality will not stop until society stops
viewing gender as a social construct and starts viewing the two genders as both human beings.
The Oxford Dictionary defines gender as the state of being male or female. I was born a female. I
grew up wearing pink dresses, playing with barbie dolls, and cooking with my easy bake oven. I
was taught to sit always sit with my legs crossed and to always act like a lady. Many members of
society would agree and say that gender is determined at birth. Sex is determined at birth by

Summary Of All Quiet On The Western Front
It was unpredictable. It was unsanitary. It caused many soldiers to lose their hope and their
lives. It was World War I. The horrors of World War I are shown clearly in Erich Maria
Remarque s All Quiet on the Western Front. Paul Baumer is the protagonist, he is just a regular
young man who has not had any major life experiences, until he enlists in the war. He goes from
just a regular unexperienced teenage boy to a mature adult in a short time. This novel is set in
WWI behind the German frontlines where Paul and his friends Katczinsky, Muller, Kropp, Tjaden,
and Kemmerich are all assigned. These six young men decided to enlist in the army because their
school teacher Kantorek pressured them into supporting their country and going to war. At first, the
young men had a feeling of patriotism but later figured out that Kantorek completely misguided
them about what it would be like when they got there. The lies eventually caused the men to hate
and resent the schoolteacher that deceived them and make them wish they never enlisted in the
first place. Remarque uses dramatic irony, and suspense to portray the detachment and problems
with emotions in this novel. Baumer begins to realize that nothing good is going to come out of
this war, and that nothing will ever be the same again while going home on leave and visiting
Franz Kemmerich s mother. Paul decides to take it upon himself to tell Mrs. Kemmerich about his
death to ease her worry. **Mrs Kemmerich who was deeply

Sexism In Walt Disney s Movie The Little Mermaid
Growing up watching Disney movies you never notice how sexist they really are. I always
watched The Little Mermaid, but watching it now is very different. When you are younger you just
watch things because you like them, you do not necessarily understand them. As you get older you
realize what you were really being taught. Walt Disney s movie The Little Mermaiddisplays a lot of
sexism and displays how society should see women and how women should act.
In Walt Disney s movie The Little MermaidAriel is constantly under power of a man. Her dad,
King Triton is the number one man who has power over her. When she gets married to Prince
Eric he then also has power over her and always will. He is a Prince and she is just a woman who
happens to be his wife with very little power. Throughout the movie Ariel is not allowed to make
her own decisions. Her dad is always telling her not to do this and not to do that. Also her two
male friends Flounder, a fish and Sebastian, a crab also tell her not to do things and always follow
her around so she is never alone under her father s orders. When she finally gets to make her
own decision to give Ursula her voice to be a human they try and portray it as she made the wrong
decision because she did it by herself and a man did not choose it for her.
In the song Poor Unfortunate Souls that Ursula sings it is telling girls to be quite for men and do
what they need, basically telling girls that they are objects. Girls are always shown in movies as
someone with no power. They are either cleaning or cooking in the house or they are a damsel in
distress needing to be saved by a man. Girls are displayed as objects and there is a certain way they
are supposed to look so that they appeal to society s needs. Ariel fits that description. She is very
small and thin, she is pretty, she has nice eyes, and she has very vibrant colors on her. She has
red hair, blueish brown eyes a purple top and a green tail. Ariel acts as though she needs a man to
save her or needs a man to be happy.

intelligence. Ariel was willing to do anything for Prince Eric and she went so far as to give her

Minnie s Desolation in Susan Glaspell s A Jury of Her Peers
Susan Glaspell, writer of the short story A Jury of Her Peers details the isolated rural farm house
of Minnie Wright and Mr.Wright. Glaspell advocates for the equality of woman and hopes to warn
the readers of the difference between the law and what is actually right. She conveys the meaning
of her theme by describing a case of a deprived woman, Minnie, who is absolutely isolated from any
other kindof companionship except for her husbands, which is like a raw hard wind that gets to the
bone. (Glaspell 198) Although Minnie isn t present at the time of the investigation, the setting of
her house lets the readers know some of the various kinds of isolation she deals with for twenty
years before being sent to jail. The different kinds of isolation that Minnie experiences are
symbolized in the objects and information Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters share and discover while
being at the scene of the incident.
Minnie s youthful life was the complete opposite to her current life. Mrs. Hale spoke of her
youth and said she used to wear pretty clothes and be lively when she was Minnie Foster.
(Glaspell 195) But now all Minnie wears is a shabby black shirt that bore the marks of much

clothing evoke a stage in her life where she was joyful and free from a man who didn t represent

Alexander changed his standard approach to the organization of his administration in Egypt.

Fire Escape Code Summary
Fire Escape Codes Summary The paper I am doing an overview on is Fire Escape Codes In
Historic Buildings by Jeff T. Johnson. Johnson focuses on a town in Rhode Island called
Pawtucket. In 1793, America s first textile mill was built, but decades later there were 100 other
mills constructed. By the 1940 s, most of these mills were abandoned and out of shape until
Rhode Island passed it s Historic Preservation Tac Credit. The reason for this shift in the 1940 s
was because after World War II, textile mills moved south for cheaper labor. This then turned these
old mills into residential homes relying on adequate fire escapes. Then Johnson brings up Richard
Moe who is the President of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. He brings up... Show more

After events such as Chicago Fire 1871, San Francisco Earthquake and fire of 1906, and the
Triangle Shirtwaist fire of 1911 which had many deaths at each one, there was a change in codes
that became more rigorous in preventing deaths and injuries in fire emergencies. Then Johnson
states that John H. Lienhard the University of Houston s College of Engineering says that mid
nineteenth century buildings were not originally built for fire safety. It wasn t until after tragic
events happened that led to fire escape, fire escapes and fire safety in general. Then in 1968,
New York banned all exterior fire escapes for new building projects because interior stairwells
were considered safer. Then Johnson brings up Vincent J. Dunn who is a retired deputy chief with
New York s fire department. Dunn notes that there are only 200,000 fire escapes that remain in the
city. Because of age and poor maintence, fire escapes susceptible to rust, corrosion and collapse.
Even with fire escapes being banned or no longer mandated in new construction, they still exist as
secondary emergency exits in historic

Internal Conflicts In Alice Walker s The Color Purple
As individuals, we must understand ourselves and our personal struggles. As part of a society, we
must understand how we fit into the world around us. Consequently, we must then bridge the gap
between these two ideas. In the film adaptation of Alice Walker s The Color Purple, the main
character, Celie, discovers her individuality overtime, as she eventually finds her niche among
others (Spielberg, 1985). Through incorporating both internal conflicts and how a person relates
with the external society, The Color Purpleacts as a transitional piece, linking the unit of conflicts of
self to the unit of conflicts involving groups.
The Color Purple examines several aspects of unit one, including the difference between singular
or multiple perspectives and the subsequent impact of adding more perspectives to an issue. As
discovered in unit one, the principle of Occam s Razor, which usually favors a singular
perspective, holds that entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity, but this thought
process often oversimplifies the issue by disregarding certain aspects or details of a situation
(The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, 2015). As if adhering to Occam s Razor, Celie in the
film, rather than further complicate her situation, chooses the path of least resistance by living
the majority of her early to mid life viewing her circumstance with a singular perspective in
which the society holds that she has no choice, but to conform to its sexist expectations
(Spielberg, 1985). However, Sofia and Shug provide new, additional perspectives that fuse
together in the formation of a cyclopean image, which gives Celie greater awareness of her
situation (The Cyclopean View, n.d.; Spielberg, 1985). Through gaining these multiple
perspectives, Celie realizes the abuse she suffers and decides to take initiative against them,
eventually embracing her inner individuality and no longer submitting to the whims of every man
she encounters, as society would expect a black woman of the time to do (Spielberg, 1985). By
unveiling the power of multiple perspectives in comparison to a singular perspective, The Color
Purple coincides with a predominant topic of unit one.
Undoubtedly, The Color Purple touches on the seeming thesis

Taxation Essay
In America, the powerful and wealthy are able to abuse the taxation system to their benefit, and
this paper will demonstrate how this is done and the solutions to those problems, as well as refute
the opposition.America has had it s moments of glory and triumph yet also it s moments of failure
and loss. However, it seems nearly impossible to predict an economic recession or a war, so one
can never know when tough times are approaching. Currently, America is in the second longest
period of stock market growth, ever. The natural conclusion, then, is that the economy here is
healthy and strong, and that this growth will continue. Unfortunately, however, America s stock
market is in for a correction sooner or later, because the wealth and... Show more content on

While the maximum tax rate on normal income is 39.6%, the maximum tax rate on capital gains,
which is how many investors become rich, is 20%( How are capital gains taxed? ). In fact,
investor and billionaire Warren Buffett said that in his taxes, he Pays a lower rate than his
secretary (HOAR). Does it honestly make sense that a man with 77 billion dollars pays less in
taxes than his secretary? It is evident that capital gains taxed at such a low rate encourage this.
The third loophole, and the product of politicians and wealthy citizens of the state of Kansas, is
a 0% tax rate on Limited Liability Companies, or LLCs. The idea for the tax break was to give
the state s economy a Shot of Adrenaline , and it allowed thousands of corporations to pay little
in taxes. This means that those companies could employ more people, and spend more money on
research and development. So how could this be negative? In short, it allowed individuals to
form Limited Liability Companies with only a single employee: themselves. This means that
very wealthy people can organize into an LLC, and pay nothing in income taxes, cheating the
system. However, it is impractical for the poor to do the same, as they don t have nearly as much
to gain from this. According to Kansas Attorney James P. Zakoura, This costs the state of Kansas
at least $260 million in needed revenue year after year (MONTGOMERY). The tax system in
America is unfair to

Afrika Sparknotes
The author of Afrika, Colleen Craig, wrote this book in 2008. Craig is a Canadian author who
lived in South Africa in the 1980s, and returned to Canada in 1991. In Afrika, Craig s first novel,
she used a similar setting for the main character Kim. The story takes place in present day Cape
Town, South Africa. Thirteen year old Kim leaves Canada and travels to Africa with her only
parent her mother, who is a journalist working in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Kim
has very little knowledge about her father and her past, and when she comes to Africa, she meets a
classmate named Themba. He promises Kim to help find her father, and Kim is surprised by how
Themba makes a lot of effort, even more than Kim herself, to their search. Themba s... Show more

Also, Kim was very judgemental and unreasonable in the beginning of her stay in Africa. As
Kim and Themba begin their search for Hendrik, they find a man in the prison of Robben Island
who was named Hendrik Fortune. When they meet Hendrik, Kim sees that he is colored .
Themba freely started a conversation with him, because he tolerates others differences. But Kim
reacted differently she thought His skin was dark copper brown and toughened by the outdoors.
His eyes were as black as night. This man could not possibly be Hendrik Fortune. (pg. 106). From
the first glance, Kim judged him by his appearance and refused to talk to him. This shows that
Kim is overcritical and she often jumps to conclusions just by the first glance. As the story
unfolds and Kim finds more and more clues about her father, Kim became curious and inquisitive.
On pg. 140, when Kim leads a horse back to the farmhouse, she accidentally sees her mother and
grandfather arguing. Instead of moving on like she could have done, she eavesdropped on them
Kim strained to hear the conversation. What was going on? . She does this because she is

Having A System In Twelve Angry, By Reginald Rose
What is the point of having a system if it has faults to it? A family friend was being held at the
adult detention center. His family was not able to hire a lawyer for him at the time, so a lawyer
was appointed to him. The problem with his appointed lawyer was that he didn t speak Spanish
and the family friend didn t speak English, therefore there was no way of communication. The
lawyer did not find out anything about his case, he didn t find out whether or not he had a work
permit or a visa, which he did but had been expired. The attorney appointed to him just said, Sign
the papers and you ll be released here. The family friend just did what the lawyer said because he
thought he was helping him, not creating a bigger problem. Now, he is fighting to stay here
where he has built a life with his wife and kids. Again, what is the point of having a system if it
has faults to it? Problems in the system have been present since about the 1930s or 1940s and are
still present to this day, it may not have as many faults however some are still present. The play,
Twelve Angry Men, written by Reginald Rose, is about a kid on trialwho is accused of murdering
his father. Testimonies given by neighbors are raising questions among the jurors. A lady from
across the railroad tracks claims she saw the kid murder her father, she, however uses glasses and
wouldn t be able to see anything without them. A man from the apartment complex claimed to have
seen the kid running down the stairs yet

This tone is important because, Crane makes his characters out to be helpless against the element of nature and it s over bearing on them. Thus, this bond between the men is the only thing they have to overcome the environment. Style: One thing that Crane has been known for is his use of imagery and similes in his writing. His use of Imagery and detail bring a repeating setting like the ocean, more to life. The reader is able to form a vivid picture in their mind with the Crane s use of adjectives and ... Analysis Of The Movie Dark Souls Ost Dark Souls OST There was somewhat of a surprise for VGM listeners upon the release of the first trailer for Dark Souls, FromSoftware s spiritual successor to Demon s souls. Even before any initial announcement was made, it was easy to recognize the work of veteran freelance composer Motoi Sakuraba, his trademark compositional style being so integral. Known primarily for his virtuosic progressive rock compositions, Dark Souls was to be his first fully orchestral work since the Baroque influenced Infinite Undiscovery nearly half a decade prior, and promised to be his bleakest to match the somber and sorrowful medieval inspired world of the Souls series as previously defined by composer Shinsuke Kita. And there s good news for those who may fear the presence of one of Sakuraba s frequent collaborators, the synth orchestra: all of the instruments are live. In addition, the grandeur of the collection of strings and brass receive a helping voice from the surprise contribution of the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus. How dangerous exotic pets can be is just another reason why they should not be owned by private citizens. Along with being dangerous, exotic pets are also very expensive. Buying exotic pets is costly enough, but they also require a great deal of money to maintain. A strong, large, sturdy habitat must be built for the animal along with buying large amounts of food. Since the beginning of time, men have had more rights and freedom than women. The two sexes have biological differences, however, these biological differences have somehow resulted in different genderroles and ideals. Gender is a social construct that was created to make society feel comfortable by having order. This social construct is constantly supported through films, media, and even education. Gender inequality will not stop until society stops viewing gender as a social construct and starts viewing the two genders as both human beings. The Oxford Dictionary defines gender as the state of being male or female. I was born a female. I grew up wearing pink dresses, playing with barbie dolls, and cooking with my easy bake oven. I was taught to sit always sit with my legs crossed and to always act like a lady. Many members of society would agree and say that gender is determined at birth. The horrors of World War I are shown clearly in Erich Maria Remarque s All Quiet on the Western Front. Paul Baumer is the protagonist, he is just a regular young man who has not had any major life experiences, until he enlists in the war. He goes from just a regular unexperienced teenage boy to a mature adult in a short time. This novel is set in WWI behind the German frontlines where Paul and his friends Katczinsky, Muller, Kropp, Tjaden, and Kemmerich are all assigned. These six young men decided to enlist in the army because their school teacher Kantorek pressured them into supporting their country and going to war. At first, the young men had a feeling of patriotism but later figured out that Kantorek completely misguided them about what it would be like when they got there. The lies eventually caused the men to hate and resent the schoolteacher that deceived them and make them wish they never enlisted in the first place. Remarque uses dramatic irony, and suspense to portray the detachment and problems with emotions in this novel. Baumer begins to realize that nothing good is going to come out of this war, and that nothing will ever be the same again while going home on leave and visiting Franz Kemmerich s mother. I always watched The Little Mermaid, but watching it now is very different. When you are younger you just watch things because you like them, you do not necessarily understand them. As you get older you realize what you were really being taught. Walt Disney s movie The Little Mermaiddisplays a lot of sexism and displays how society should see women and how women should act. In Walt Disney s movie The Little MermaidAriel is constantly under power of a man. Her dad, King Triton is the number one man who has power over her. When she gets married to Prince Eric he then also has power over her and always will. He is a Prince and she is just a woman who happens to be his wife with very little power. Also her two male friends Flounder, a fish and Sebastian, a crab also tell her not to do things and always follow her around so she is never alone under her father s orders. When she finally gets to make her own decision to give Ursula her voice to be a human they try and portray it as she made the wrong decision because she did it by herself and a man did not choose it for her. In the song Poor Unfortunate Souls that Ursula sings it is telling girls to be quite for men and do what they need, basically telling girls that they are objects. Girls are always shown in movies as someone with no power. They are either cleaning or cooking in the house or they are a damsel in distress needing to be saved by a man. Girls are displayed as objects and there is a certain way they are supposed to look so that they appeal to society s needs. Ariel fits that description. She is very small and thin, she is pretty, she has nice eyes, and she has very vibrant colors on her. She has red hair, blueish brown eyes a purple top and a green tail. As part of a society, we must understand how we fit into the world around us. Consequently, we must then bridge the gap between these two ideas. In the film adaptation of Alice Walker s The Color Purple, the main character, Celie, discovers her individuality overtime, as she eventually finds her niche among others (Spielberg, 1985). Through incorporating both internal conflicts and how a person relates with the external society, The Color Purpleacts as a transitional piece, linking the unit of conflicts of self to the unit of conflicts involving groups. The Color Purple examines several aspects of unit one, including the difference between singular or multiple perspectives and the subsequent impact of adding more perspectives to an issue. As discovered in unit one, the principle of Occam s Razor, which usually favors a singular perspective, holds that entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity, but this thought process often oversimplifies the issue by disregarding certain aspects or details of a situation (The Editors of EncyclopГ¦dia Britannica, 2015). As if adhering to Occam s Razor, Celie in the film, rather than further complicate her situation, chooses the path of least resistance by living the majority of her early to mid life viewing her circumstance with a singular perspective in which the society holds that she has no choice, but to conform to its sexist expectations (Spielberg, 1985). However, Sofia and Shug provide new, additional perspectives that fuse together in the formation of a cyclopean image, which gives Celie greater awareness of her situation (The Cyclopean View, n.d.; Spielberg, 1985). Through gaining these multiple perspectives, Celie realizes the abuse she suffers and decides to take initiative against them, eventually embracing her inner individuality and no longer submitting to the whims of every man she encounters, as society would expect a black woman of the time to do (Spielberg, 1985). By unveiling the power of multiple perspectives in comparison to a singular perspective, The Color Purple coincides with a predominant topic of unit one. • 42. Taxation Essay In America, the powerful and wealthy are able to abuse the taxation system to their benefit, and this paper will demonstrate how this is done and the solutions to those problems, as well as refute the opposition.America has had it s moments of glory and triumph yet also it s moments of failure and loss. However, it seems nearly impossible to predict an economic recession or a war, so one can never know when tough times are approaching. Currently, America is in the second longest period of stock market growth, ever. The natural conclusion, then, is that the economy here is healthy and strong, and that this growth will continue. Unfortunately, however, America s stock market is in for a correction sooner or later, because the wealth and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the maximum tax rate on normal income is 39.6%, the maximum tax rate on capital gains, which is how many investors become rich, is 20%( How are capital gains taxed? ). In fact, investor and billionaire Warren Buffett said that in his taxes, he Pays a lower rate than his secretary (HOAR). Does it honestly make sense that a man with 77 billion dollars pays less in taxes than his secretary? It is evident that capital gains taxed at such a low rate encourage this. The third loophole, and the product of politicians and wealthy citizens of the state of Kansas, is a 0% tax rate on Limited Liability Companies, or LLCs. The idea for the tax break was to give the state s economy a Shot of Adrenaline , and it allowed thousands of corporations to pay little in taxes. This means that those companies could employ more people, and spend more money on research and development. So how could this be negative? In short, it allowed individuals to form Limited Liability Companies with only a single employee: themselves. This means that very wealthy people can organize into an LLC, and pay nothing in income taxes, cheating the system. However, it is impractical for the poor to do the same, as they don t have nearly as much to gain from this. According to Kansas Attorney James P. Zakoura, This costs the state of Kansas at least $260 million in needed revenue year after year (MONTGOMERY). The tax system in America is unfair to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Themba freely started a conversation with him, because he tolerates others differences. But Kim reacted differently she thought His skin was dark copper brown and toughened by the outdoors. His eyes were as black as night. This man could not possibly be Hendrik Fortune. (pg. 106). From the first glance, Kim judged him by his appearance and refused to talk to him. This shows that Kim is overcritical and she often jumps to conclusions just by the first glance. As the story unfolds and Kim finds more and more clues about her father, Kim became curious and inquisitive. • 44. Having A System In Twelve Angry, By Reginald Rose What is the point of having a system if it has faults to it? A family friend was being held at the adult detention center. The problem with his appointed lawyer was that he didn t speak Spanish and the family friend didn t speak English, therefore there was no way of communication. The lawyer did not find out anything about his case, he didn t find out whether or not he had a work permit or a visa, which he did but had been expired. The attorney appointed to him just said, Sign the papers and you ll be released here. The family friend just did what the lawyer said because he thought he was helping him, not creating a bigger problem. Now, he is fighting to stay here where he has built a life with his wife and kids. Again, what is the point of having a system if it has faults to it?
