How Did The Beatles Contribute To The Popularity Of Rock N...
The Beatles were the first British Rock group. Their band consisted of members, John Lennon
(vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitarist), George Harrison (guitarist), and Ringo Starr
(Drummer). The Beatles performed Rock N Roll and Pop. In 1960, the band formed in Liverpool,
England and were acknowledged as on of the most influential music groups. They became more
popular around 1963 with Paul McCartneyand John Lennonas primary songwriters. The Beatleslaid
a foundation for Rock N Roll in the 60 s. The Beatles manager and producer started recording
music which helped grow their popularity in the United Kingdom. Their first primary hit Love
Me Do led to such a great popularity that they kept recording albums such as Rubber Soul, Abbey
Road, and Let It Be. Over time, The Beatles became the Best Selling Band In History with over
800 million albums sold. Billboard magazine named them Most Successful Artist of all time in
2017, also stating the fact that they had 20 number one hits on the top 100.... Show more content on

This album was given negative reviews due to tension that the band was facing between each
other. Let It Be speaks about sadness in the majority of its songs. These songs were written
primarily by Paul McCartney and these songs were written due to violence and wars that were
occuring around the world such as the Vietnam War. Let It Be gave peace like a calm lake on a
warm summer day. Let It be was released about a month after the band s break up. Like other
Beatles albums, Let It Be was top of the charts in the UK and US. The album Let It Be has songs

Comparing Ancient Greek Architecture, Doric, And...
As the saying goes, great art is mad with its own loveliness. Over the decades, Greek inspired
architecture has been seen all over the world. Ideas are often borrowed while constructing
buildings, monuments, and even houses. Greeks mostly used wood, limestone, unbaked bricks,
terracotta and metal for construction. Most architecture were inspired by religion, politics, and
form of recreation. Of all designs from Greek architecture three of them have withstood the test of
time and their application can be seen today. They include Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian order.
However, each order is distinct from the other and one cannot differentiate unless trained. This
paper will look at Doric and Corinthian orders while comparing and contrasting them. It will also
trace their prevalence and popularity throughout history.
Doric style of architecture has been the most famous. It is used all over the world today. It is
found in Parthenon and Acropolis and can be distinguished from other orders as it has vertical
column and a plain roof. Colonies of south Italy and Sicily have also used it. Doric order is,
however, the simplest. Roman Doric is the most common form today. This column consists of
around capital which has a narrow neckband. It has a shaft that may be plain or fluted and normally
rest on a base. Its entablature is structured to have a distinctive frieze with triglyphs which are an
upright projecting grooved panel. This triglyph is normally set in line with each column. There

The Controversy In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies
When William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies and many other books, won the Nobel Prize
in Literature in 1983, it surprised an abundance of people; many critics, especially in the United
States, did not agree with the Academy s choice, leading to a large amount of controversy. One
of the Nobel judges, Artur Lundkvist, even spoke out against Golding because he did not think
Golding met Alfred Nobel s standards. The 1983 Nobel Literature Prize deserved to go to
William Golding because his writing, complex and obscure, met the requirements stated by Alfred
Nobel in his will. On October 6th, 1983, the Swedish Academy announced William Golding as the
winner of the Nobel Literature Prize, generat[ing] far more controversy than its annual
announcements usually call forth (Bufkin). There will always be a disagreement when a person
is selected in our society, but when the Academy selected Golding as the laureate in 1983, critics
disputed over the decision. A large amount of the controversy surrounding Golding and the Prize
erupted in the United States. Many Americans disapproved of Golding because he did not have a
public personality and did not support a cause. For example, Golding is not a political or public
man, and an English writer called him independent and hermetic. Also, Golding wrote intellectually,
making his books complex and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of its complexity and dark morals, not everyone who read it liked it. For example, in
Lord of the Flies, the Lord of the Flies says, there isn t anyone to help you. Only me. And I m the
Beast (Golding 143). In this quotation, Golding reveals some of the dark morals that he acquired
from participating in World War II. His many other books also include similar morals about man s
fall from grace, but the books contain some positive thoughts. So, even though Golding sends
obscure messages in his writing, he also includes many reasonable ideas

The Grand Scheme of the New Imperialism
Since it became a necessity in the 19th and 20th century to rule over other nations for economic
and political prosperity, the Europeans did the same for the sake of the mother country, which
greatly influenced the respective aspects. The European or the new Imperialism is a movement,
which brought the worldwide effect of white supremacy. As far as the ideas of historians are
concerned, new Imperialism was the product of economic rationale. It is obvious that every
nation looks forward to uplift their economic status. Although the new Imperialism was a
product of economic rational, it was largely justified for social and political reasons such as
civilizing missions to help these countries out. While social effects helped to cause the new
Imperialism, it was the economic advantages that forced the major plays of Europe into the grand
scheme of the new Imperialism. The new Imperialism started by launching a new era of
expansionism, they conquered territory by colonizing nations where it was easy to gain material
wealth. . The imperial countries by the economic and technological powers tried to restructure the
reliant nations and regions that could supply them with the raw materials and food products . This
was primarily done in Africa and Asia on the basis of colonial invasion. The European nations
viewed Africa and Asia as a means to materials such as coal, iron and copper. They chose these
continents based on the material wealth and as well the convenience of their

The Results Of Gothic Architecture
The results of Gothic architecture in York
In the 12th century architecture saw the progression from Romanesque architecture to the Gothic
era, which saw the forthcoming of the prodigious cathedrals that were to become the architectural
symbol of the middle ages. This was during a time of high aspirations. As well structural
developments Gothic architecture is also associated with a change in thinking and social attitudes
that are represented in numerous ways, essentially appealing to emotions.
After the fall of the Roman Empire the political culture shifted from the feudal system to
monarchy, bringing forth a cultural identity. Poetry and art became more personal and intimate,
giving people individuality. It reflected the social sustainability of the modern age and the
growing confidence of the Christian Church of Rome, which successfully lead crusades to
reclaim the Holy land from the Islamic occupants. The representation of Christ changed from a
godlike hero in the battle between good and evil to a tortured human figure that sacrificed him
self on the cross for the sins of mankind. To respond, architects believed that light was the closest
substance to God s true presence and focused on making a network of ribs and vaults reaching
towards heaven. Pointed arches looked towards the sky as the city had no need of the sun, neither
of the moon, to shine on it: for the glory of God did lighten it . (The Bible. Revelation 21:23) The
results were specific elements, such

Language And Literature Courses And Ap U.s. History
I ve always struggled to break the boundaries entangled within the composition of traditional essays.
Between AP Language/Literature courses and AP U.S. History, my writing had become noticeably
formulaic; I relied heavily on templates and felt awkward abandoning the traditional five paragraph
essay. Although the formulaic way of writingassisted in my capability to critically recognize the
difference between opinion and evidence, the patterns were not helpful in developing my
organizational skills. My ability to form argumentative ideas from given prompts strengthened,
while unity and coherence within paragraphs proved to be my downfall. It was not until my second
semester of English at the University of Georgia that I noticed my organization was not
comprehensible to the reader. Some paragraphs were like mazes; they left the reader wondering
how the first sentence connected to the following sentence. Along with organization, English 1102
helped identify my lack of transitional phrases within paragraphs and the tendency for my argument
to shift. Nonetheless, this course has highlighted my strengths as a writer, including my ability to
incorporate evidence so that it supports an intelligent, challenging thesis.
The most interesting aspect I discovered about my writing this semester is my ability to read,
appreciate, and interpret a piece of literature and write analytically about it. In this course I ve
grown to change my reading process completely. I had a tendency to read

Red Beard Reflection
Red Beard is a film that reminds one that the distance to be travelled is far longer than the
distance that was already covered. Not only in the case of medical studies, which happened to
be the professional field of the protagonist of the movie but also in the whole gamut of activities
of all people in this world: in their professions, in arts, in sports, in literature, in studies, in
knowledge and in case of anything and everything, the unknown is several times more than the
known and is spread like a vast ocean. This realisation is the essence of this Kurosawa Movie.
Most of the humans are trapped in the notion that there is nothing more there to know and
everything about them is perfect. It is nothing but a by product of a form of emotional weakness.
When the world is shrinking to one s own self, people tend to have a wrong conviction that there
is nothing beyond the limits they have set for themselves and even if there is something, it is not
worthy compared to the things they have known or earned. It is hard to come out of that
marshland. Every step one takes there is digging into one s own self: into... Show more content on

What he really learned from that aged doctor in an ordinary clinic of that dark Japanese village was
nothing but life itself. They were the breakdowns and silences and consolations and smiles and
laughter of several fresh life situations. The unpredictability of the moment ahead enhanced the
curiosity of being in those very moments. And when looked back after a moment, that growing
curiosity turned into amusement or sadness. The young doctor, seasoned by the persisting and
different trials and tribulations he underwent while reading through those test books which were
nothing but the very lives of the people in that village, gradually came closer to the transfiguration:

Comparing The Visit To Grandmother And The Leap
Does one truly know how ones child might feel towards his or her parent? In the two short stories
A Visit to Grandmother by William Melvin Kelly and The Leap by Louise Erdrich some
similarities can be found in the children that grow up there early life not knowing there parents love
them. The children do this because of simple misunderstandings between the parents actions
towards them and the actions towards there siblings. This causes the characters to feel unloved
and second rate. Which either causes the characters to grow or to grow bitter for the rest of the
characters lives. The parents could have prevented most of the young characters bitter feelings
just by treating the parents kids equally and telling them they are loved. Now what may happen to
the two young characters in there later years will the characters be able to grow out of the
tragedies of there early life s and become stronger or will the characters become bitter there entire

and feels he is not as loved as G.L. is by there mother. The reason for this is because of the simple
misunderstanding that sense G.L. gets more lenience, gets more attention, and is lighter
skinned in a racist world that the mother loves G.L. more in Charles s eyes. Now to The Leap the
daughter feels she is lesser because her mom is the bees knees and she wants to be just like her
mother but she feels like a lesser form of the baby her mother never had. She grows up feeling
this way like a lesser version of some one elites but even with that she grows stronger gradually
and the clue that gives this away is the lamb that grows more definite every year (Erdrich 48)this
indicates the daughter growing become ing her own person. In both short stories there is
misunderstandings but how you let it effect you by feeling unloved or to become more definite
depends on wether you grow or stay

Southern Appalachian Culture
When one thinks of the Appalachians, one generally thinks of the mountains of the southeastern
region of the United States. However the Mountain range itself actually begins in the Canadian
province of Newfoundland and Labrador, extending from there for almost 2,000 miles (3,200 km)
to central Alabama in the United States. Thus the region also forms the eastern counterpart of the
Canadian Rocky Mountains.
Southern Appalachia alone includes three hundred counties covering most of West Virginia and the
Southern Highlands or Upland South. The mountains form a natural barrier between the eastern
Coastal Plain and the vast Interior Lowlands of North America. As a result, they have played a vital
role in the settlement and development of the entire continent.
Despite the vast geographical distance, the peoples of the Appalachians (state side) maintain a
unified identity through shared cultural identities; dialect, building practices, folk music and dance,
crafts, superstitions and religion, and moonshine unite all 1500 miles of these mountains. The
inhabitants of this region largely descended from English and Scottish Irish folk traditions, brought
to the region by colonial immigrants. There were also smaller influences from other ... Show more

Appalachian tunes. The Great Depression of the 1930s put an end to the commercial viability of
old time music, it would be out of the Old Time tradition that modern commercial country western

J Taiya Carr3/21/16Chapter 25REFLECTION PAPER 3 World War I showed new technology
and exposed men and women to a new type of brutality. European countries were in a state of
disarray and America found itself searching for the meaning of life and happiness. Radical
changes will occur in the U.S. involving politics and social ideas. Some people were shedding
their old traditional skins to accept the new modern world, while others are trying to hold onto the
old ways of the world. The United Stateswas facing varied problems, racism between blacks and
whites rose during the famed roaring twenties, and modernism was the new trend. This was

A reason America disliked immigrants was because anarchism and socialism was associated with
them, especially those from countries with failing governments. Stereotypes were common even
then. Now, the KKK, which had become very popular in the late 1800 s, found itself with an influx
of new members. They called for 100 percent Americanism, which I am sure appealed to many
Americans at the time and only allowed white Protestants to join (794). It is known that the KKK
were fundamentalist, many people from the South but also other parts of the country joining.
Fundamentalism and Modernists were butting heads at the time, especially with the Scopes Trial
/ Monkey Trial was in the air. A school teacher, John Scopes taught his students about evolution and
was arrested in Tennessee. The attorney defending Scopes was Charles Darrow. William Jennings
Bryan, whom had been the Secretary of State, had recently denounced Darwinism due to his firm
religious views and supported the prosecution during the Scopes Trial. I believed religion was
part of the government a bit too much during these times. It is the same today because we all
want a president or government official to have the same belief as we do. This would almost
guarantee the laws we want being approved, such as a liberal democrat who support same sex
marriage would be in favor of Hillary Clinton now. I believe Darrow was focused more on whether

Social Tension Surrounding The United States Essay
Introduction
In what has become known as the issue of the century by many (Buchanan, 2015), immigration
has been a topic of debate and an area of sociological tension for several decades in the United
States. It can be seen daily in our newspapers, television shows and especially in America politics.
In fact, it could be argued that this form of social tension in the United States goes as far back as
1492 when Christopher Columbus first stepped foot on what is now North America. It was from
this point that social tension surrounding immigration into the modern United States truly began
between early European explorers and the existing Native Americans.
Social tension surrounding immigration began to peak when large scale immigration into the
United States started in the late 1800 s. In the early days of immigration into the United States the
social tension surrounded the diaspora of the Native Americans which lead to the creation of indian
reservations (cite US History.org). This early social tension primarily surrounded the obtainment of
land and the establishment of property. As we move forward into history, modern immigration
tension in America is more focused on immigration from Mexico.
This paper will explore immigration into the United States and help determine why it is a source of
social tension. Some groups suggest that immigration threatens America s resources and should be
better controlled while others suggest that immigration is vital to the success of

Whole Life
Introduction In creating a whole life concept for myself as I become an engineer was a little
overwhelming for me at first. Reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People By Stephen R.
Covey, really helped me to better understand what a whole life concept was and how to apply it
to daily life. In Habit 1 Be Proactive I was introduced to the concentric circles model as seen
Fig.1. Starting out with the circle of concern which includes worries fears such as national debt,
nuclear war, health, personal relationships and problems at work. Outside of my circle of concern
are the things that I do not have any involvement in. Inside my circle of concern there are things
that I have no real control of, also there are things I can... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He breaks down priorities into the quadrants shown in table 1. The best way to mange your time
would be staying in quadrant II. By staying in quadrant II you will spend less time in I, and have
more time for III and IV. As an engineer developing great time management skills is a must. By
staying in quadrant II you will build the relationships need to move forward, and open more
doors for the future. Also this will free up more time for those projects that have a deadline and
require long hours. Habit 4 Win/Win Win/Win is a character based code where all parties
involved gain something. Win/Win does not show life as a competition where someone loses.
Also Covey says that if a mutual benefit can t be found then no deal, agree to disagree agreeably.
In today s world I believe Win/Win should be applied with the environment in mind especially with
nature resources decreasing. Design products that can be easily recycled or having longer lifespans
would help reduce our carbon foot print. Habit 5 Seek First to Understand, Then to be understood
Communication is one of the most important life skills. In Habit 5 Covey tells us that listening is
the most important part of communication. Covey also describes empathic listening, listening with
intent to understand the other person s frame of reference and feelings. After understanding come
being understood the key to being understood courage. It is important that

amp;#8230;about. quot; This section shows how the main character, Jake Barnes, does not care
if he truly learns anything in life and only wants to know how to get by. If in life you never learn
anything, then it is almost impossible to change. Jake Barnes unwillingness to learn shows that
later in his life he will have little or no change as he did for the book, yet again showing the
theme of a constant or unchanging course. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The incident where
Bocanegra kills a man in the crowd while being loaded off the truck for the fight later that night
is a subtle example of the theme, the bill always comes. (On pg. 199 quot;The amp;#8230;

punishment from Pedro Romero. The bull has committed a violent and deadly act against man so,
in turn, he (the bull) will be smitten in view of hundreds of spectators. This shows how things in
life will always have a steady course of action, which is shown in this rather subtle example. A far
better example of the thematic interpretation conveyed in the prior paragraph, is the character of
Mike. Mike is very high and mighty when arriving in Pamplona with his lady, Brett. He continues

Life Goals And Challenges
Life goals and challenges
Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into visible said Tony Robbins, author and
life coach. Everyone has challenges throughout their life, but people have strengths that can lead
up to effect their future. We use our goals to keep us motivated and our strengths to help us get
past the challenges we face. Our weaknesses fade because our strengths become so strong and
we are faced with new challenges. With each challenge we overcome we become stronger and we
find more strengths in our challenges. I am a great friend because I always care for my friends and

One day I would also like to have a happy family and I plan to give my children the childhood I
have always wanted because I did not get the chance to live mine. All together success comes in
many forms for many different people but the type of success I want to have involves me
graduating both high school and college, becoming a success in my career and life, and having a
family that I have always wished my family was like. Challenges are one of the many things we
as humans posses. We learn to face challenges and how to conquer the ones that come after them.
I have many challenges but my main one is a personal family issue. Recently I moved in with
my mom and I have not got to see my sister and my stepsister who live with my dad. This is a
challenge because It distracts me from things I need to be focused on. Another challenge is one
that not only I face but a ton of other people do as well, procrastination. I procrastinate a ton and
I usually do things the night before they are due or the next morning before I go to first block. I
have been getting better at this by starting on the assignment the night I received it and working

David Grusin s On Golden Pond
David Grusin is the composer for On Golden Pond. He was the composer for The Graduate and
The Goonies which are films that I recognized but have not yet seen. I selected On Golden Pond
because I had not heard of the movie beforehand. The 1980s was full of electronic music; however,
this film featured no electronic pop. The filmis only instrumental, and due to the fact, the film
focuses on an older couple dealing with growing older and their time with a young man named
Billy, I believe the score is appropriate. When looking at the theme from The Goonies, the use of
piano and strings are apparent in both films.
From the beginning of the film, the score was a peaceful piano piece that went along with the
scenery. It was gentle and non threatening. There is a flute, or other woodwind, that joins the piano,
and this is when a car is seen driving by. Later strings join the ensemble and the music all continues
to be soft. This reassured me that the movie would not be dark or overwhelming. The theme music

This noise is natural and allows the scene to seem realistic, but the music returns when the man
goes into the house and reflects on the items in the household. Throughout the film this transition
from nature to On Golden Pond s theme occurs often. This changeover generally indicated a
change in scene or a resolution to a conflict. There were few moments of conflict where the music
fills with brass sounds and takes on a tense feeling. For example, when the main character goes for
a walk in the woods, I appreciate that the music is heard throughout his walk, it sounds like a harp,
other strings, and woodwind instruments. The audience can hear the leaves crunching and birds;
however, when the music becomes faster and takes on lower pitches, one truly feels the man s
stress of becoming lost in the forest. Additionally, the shift from soft to loud occurs frequently

After rising through the ranks of the Department of Justice, he eventually was appointed as the

him, and the Agency.

How Mental Illness Affects Individuals, And The...
Studies show that one in four people in the world have been or will be affected with some type of
mental illness within their lifespan. Within this paper I plan to discuss what mental illness is, how
mental illness affects individuals, and the stereotypes that come along with mental illnesses. The
question I plan to answer would be How has mental illness been perceived and treated throughout
history? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, mental illness is defined as being a
medical condition that disturbs a person s thinking, feeling, mood, and ability to relate to others
(NAMI). Serious mental illness cost America approximately 193.2 billion dollars in lost earnings
each year resulting in about 60 percent of adults and about one half of youth with mental illness to
receive no mental health services (NAMI). In the United Kingdom about half of the population is
said to experience some sort of mental illness in a year which leads to discrimination
(MentalHealth). With so many people in the world experiencing mental illness leads many to
wonder how it is treated within the different cultures. This paper will explore OCD, ADHD, and
Autism and the causes of these different types of mental illnesses. I will also discuss the treatment
of these mental illnesses as well as the stigmatization that comes along with these disorders across
the multicultural system. Also the concept of prejudice of mental illnesses along with the medical
treatments and how they were

Hardball Summary
Chris Matthew s Hardball consists of four different parts containing different themes and policies
on how the political world is run. All four parts: Alliances, Enemies, Deals, and Reputations contain
personal anecdotes, historical context of Presidents careers, and rules Matthew s has formed
throughout political experience. The beginning of each chapter starts off with a quote that
foreshadows the subject of each chapter. Although Matthews does establish important rules to
follow as a politician, I disagree with some of his points even though I am a democrat like him.
Part One, Alliances, starts off with the importance of one on one relationships. The sole purpose of
these one on one relationships, which in political terminology is known as retail politics can
provide a personal and political awareness for the other individual s concerns. This triggers a chance
for the one who is performing the retail action the opportunity to network. Lyndon B. Johnson

I agree that networking is an important aspect to get ahead in life. Many people I ve met have
emphasized that in order to be successful, one must network. I m glad to know that Matthews
took the risk of knocking on many top politicians doors in order to seek job opportunities, and I
m also glad that he took a lesson in starting from a smaller position than just sprinting to the top.
A lot of people are desperate for a reward, but what they don t realize is that it takes years to get

The war on Afghanistan and Iraq was a learning experience for the United States foreign policy. On
September 11th, 2001 nineteen Al Qaeda members hijacked four planes, two of which crashed into
the world trade center, another into the pentagon and the last into Shanksville, Pennsylvania
(Scholastic). The man who was behind this attack was Osama bin Laden and with refusal to hand
him over, the United Statesquickly prompted an attack on Afghanistan. The second war which
began in 2003 was due to the belief that Saddam Hussein had acquired weapons of mass

The war in Afghanistan which has become the longest war in American history has also become
one of the most expensive war in history behind the war in Iraq, which justifies the idea that the
United States is unable to manage their expenses and resources in times of war. The war which
has lasted for thirteen years along with two years of soldiers still stationed in Afghanistan has
caused America to invest a lot into the war against terror. The cost of the Afghanistan war alone
has reached almost 1 trillion dollars and counting. The Money has been used for military
defense, medical aid, reconstruction, and post war relief (PBS). All of these expenses are from
tax payer s dollars and money that was borrowed and comes with a hefty amount of interest, 124
billion dollars already paid (CNBC). A total of almost two trillion dollars was borrowed and was
approximately 20% of the total United States debt (Global Research). During this war money was
not being spent effectively, one example includes 6.5 million dollars on communication towers
that were never used. For the reconstruction of Afghanistan approximately 104 billion dollars was
used and a billions of dollars lost due to wasteful spending, fraud and corruption (MSNBC). Exact

Baron Monstesquieu and His Idea of the Separation of Powers The separation of powers,
originally established by Baron Montesquieu in De l Esprit des Lois (1748) can be seen as an
integral part of any constitution. Montesquieu voiced the necessity for a separation of the primary
three bodies: the executive, the legislature and the judiciary.
In Lord Woolf s statement: The separation of powershas never been part of the framework of our
unwritten Constitution. He is clearly stating that he believes that under the constitution of the
United Kingdom there are important departures from the classic doctrine, and the separation of

This led Lord Hailsham to refer to the arrangement (A Government with a majority) as an elective
dictatorship . However, although it is a clear breach, it may be noted that out of 659 MP s only
approximately 100 are Cabinet Ministers, so the Government are outnumbered in any case.
To a large extent, the judiciary form a separate body from both the executive and the legislature. It
has been said, that as the United Kingdom has an unwritten Constitution we have a need for trust
and accountability in our public bodies and another need to enhance the credibility and
effectiveness of our public institutions. This is further recognized by Lord Steyn: Central to the
Rule of Law in a modern democratic society is the principle that the judiciary must be, and must be
seen to be, independent of the executive. However, although this has been firmly established,
judges are appointed by Her Majesty after consultation with the

The Persian Wars Were Significant For World History
One of the main components that defined the ancient world is war. During the era of expansion
and conquest, wars were waged across lands near and far. By means of defense, revolts arose at
this time of numerous battles as well as the formation of alliances. As a whole, war is a struggle
for power. For instance, two great ancient civilizations, Greece and Persia, fought in a series of
conflicts known as the Greco Persian Wars. Herodotus, the historian who first wrote about the
Persian Wars, once said, Great things are won by great dangers. All war is dangerous, yet the
advancements made afterward help form civilizations and promote future prosperity. The Greco

Moreover, in the Battle of Thermopylae, Persian forces led by Xerxes outnumbered the Greeks yet
again. However, the militant Spartans took up arms and were able to defeat the large Persian
army. Thermopylae allowed the Greek forces to come up with various tactics and strategies in
order to defeat Persia. Next, the Battle of Salamis was a naval battle between several Greek city
states and Persia. This battle forms the turning point of the Greco Persian Wars since it
ultimately saved Greece from being absorbed into the Persian Empire and ensured the
emergence of Western civilization as a major force in the world. The ending of the Battle of
Salamis left the Persian army trapped in Greece, which paves the way for the final battle of the
war, the Battle of Platea. In the battle, the Greek army came and defeated the weakened Persians,
the Persian Wars were over . The mark of the ending of the Greco Persian wars gave way to Athens
arising from the ashes as the dominant and central city state of Greece, which then provides
political and cultural advancements during its golden age. After the wars, Athens emerges as the
center of all activity amongst each city state in Greece. One of the key features within the Athenian

Artifice Research Paper
Argumentative essay Nowadays the general public is fooled by the government and big
companies through the art of artifice. Artifice is the art of deception, and in our consumer culture
today, CEO and the higher ups use this art to sell their product and earn revenue. In the excerpt
by Chris Hedges, talks about the political leaders who using deception to advertise and market
their beliefs or products to give the audience a sense of faux intimacy. Though some might find
this art quiet foul, I find it to be very interesting how the use of artifice can manipulate people to
buy their business. The excerpt teaches that in a consumer culture, to sell a product, you will need
to have mastered the art of deception, create a well thought out narrative to be able to sufficiently

need to be content or sincere, or honest. For example when selling a product, you can lie to your
viewers about the product as long as the lie isn t obvious and the product still appears to be true
and relative. In other words, this means when you sell a product and tell the audience the complete
and honest truth, no matter how bad it is, this will scare your audience away, but when you sell a
product and tell more lies than truth, you can somewhat curve the narrative and appeal to your
audience. All this is important in a consumer because the best use of artifice will survive in the
competition of marketing, though this is true there is another way to attract an audience willing to

The Demographic Transition Theory
Unlike society a few decades before, the life expectancy has increased and now America is seeing
an exponential growth to the elderly population. There are many factors that could be the cause of
this. Looking at the demographic transition theory in conjunction with the Malthusian theory
brought valuable insight for me. The demographic theory says there are four stages to population
growth that are predictable. Those who are in their late 80 s and above were capable of seeing
all four of these stages in America. As they aged and the stages for population advanced so did
technology. Malthusian theory claims that there are three factors that prevents the human
population exceed its carrying capacity, which are food, disease, and war. Those who lived
through the four stages of America were lucky enough to see technology advance to prevent
those factors in being lethal to our population. It became possible for adults to live on to see
their grandchildren and eventually their great grandchildren. However, having life for so long
isn t always the best. There s a quote from the movie The Dark Knight which I believe applies to
this situation, You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. . This
quote is evident in the film Living Old , because eventually you reach an age where your body and
mind regresses, which hurts your love ones. For example, in the film Mary Ann DiBerardino

John Bowlby And John Bowlby s Attachment Theory
This study focused on the Attachment theory in which it is stated how attachment is a deep and
enduring emotional bond that connects one person to another across time and space (Ainsworth,
1973; Bowlby, 1969).
Attachment theory is a theory that s connected to psychology, studied first by John Bowlby. It
explains the relevance of getting attached to something in an individual s development. It is
observed among children relying on their parents for stability, and that there is an existing need for
them due to such reliance.
The attachment theory is most commonly observed in the parent child scenario, as it is in Bowlby
s study which regarded the existence of the attachment as a child needing some sort of person to

Breaking or disrupting of the attachment figure during the critical two year period would lead to
the child possibly suffering irreversible long term consequences of this maternal deprivation. Risks
continuing till the age of five.
Bowlby used the term maternal deprivation , referring to separation of loss of the mother and
failure to develop an attachment. The main idea stating simply that the first few years of an infant
is critical and separation or disruption can leave effects on the child.
The third point is that the long term consequences of maternal deprivation might consist of
delinquency, reduced intelligence, increased aggression, depression and affectionless psychopathy.
The last being an inability to show affection or concern towards others, for example a lack of guilt
for anti social behavior.
The fourth point comes from Robertson as well as Bowlby (1952), in which they believe that short
term separation from attachment figure leads to distress. They discovered 3 progressive stages for

Pros And Cons Of Older Parenthood
It has been the trend for a while now for women to have babies in their 30s instead of in their
20s. The question that needs to be answered is if older parenthood involves more risks with
women s health, pregnancy, and birth. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention), birth rates among women aged 30 34 exceeded those women aged 25 29 in the US in
2016 and this is the first time this happened in thirty years.
Currently, the average age for women who are having their first child is 28 years of age. In 2015
it was 26.4 and in 2014 it was 26.3. Experts mostly focus on the average or mean maternal age

There are pros and cons for delaying parenthood. For those who prefer to postpone parenthood,

The advantages of delaying motherhood until after age 35 are there are fewer behavioral, social,

National Cranberry Case Analysis
National Cranberry is a cooperative of berry growers around North America that share common
production facilities and for the last several years have been experiencing capacity bottlenecks
among other issues. After initial analysis, two main factors that contributed to a decrease in
production were found. The first issue in the business is that the supply trucks and drivers
delivering the harvest were not properly organized and there was not enough space and
organization to allow for smooth offloading of several trucks a day. The second major issue is the
rampant absenteeism and need for overtimework based on shortage of workers. This has driven the
cost of running the business up and drastically reducing profitability. A lesser but... Show more

Nevertheless, some trucks had to wait for up to 3 hours to dump their loads which was solely
attributed to the holding bins which could only hold 7200bbls total of both dry and wet berries.
Additionally, out of the 27 holding bins, only 11 were actually set up to hold wet berries which
made the constrain even more difficult. Once that section of the plant was full there was very
little that crews in receiving could do to alleviate the problem. In the next section of the
production process, dechaffing was possible at a rate of 4500bbl/hour which over a 12 hour
period would be more than enough capacity even on the heaviest barrel deliveries days.
Where the bottlenecks really start to become apparent is in the drying stage of the wet berries
where only 3 drying stations existed and in a combined effort could only dry at 600bbl/hour. In the
harvest of 1980, there was 58% of the total capacity coming in as wet berries which was already
over the capacity based on a 12 hour day. In 1981, the harvest in set to bring in 70% of the berries
as wet berries which would further slow the overall process.
Assuming that the Kiwanee dumpers, dechaffing and de stoning machinery were all working to
their full capacity of 4500bbl/hour, the increase to 70% wet berries would overload the driers
within the first few hours of production. If the RP1 was to add one new

they re right to a certain degree, however, a cell phone is so much more than just that and they
don t even realize it. Instead of thinking of a phone as a type of device, people everywhere
should realize what it really is, a necessity. A necessity is something that people have to have in
an everyday life. In today s society, cell phones are used every single day, all around the world.
They have became a very important aspect in lives, and to make it throughout each day, citizens

Cell phones make things quick and they re convenient. A cell phone is definitely a have to have

Problem 1: C(Q) = 100 + 20Q + 15Q^2 + 10Q^3
a) Fixed Cost (doesn t change depending on output produced) = 100
b) Variable Cost of producing Q = 10 units: 20*10 + 15*10^2 + 10*10^3 = 200 + 1,500 + 10,000 =

c) Total Cost of producing Q = 10 units: C(10) = 100 + 20*10 + 15*10^2 + 10*10^3 = 11,800
Alternatively, we have Total Costsof Producing Q=10 units = Fixed Costs + Variable Costs of

(c) The inverse demand function will give us the equilibrium price by inputting the equilibrium
output
P* = 200 3(Q1* + Q2*)
P* = 200 3(18 + 20) = 86
P* = 86
(d) Profit = Revenue Cost = P x Q C(Q)
Firm 1 s Profit = 86*20 26*20 = $1200
Firm 2 s Profit = 86*18 54*18 = $972
Hence, according to the Cournot model, firm 1 will produce more than firm 2 resulting in a profit
greater than that earned by firm 2.
Problem 8:
Cournot Model:
The Inverse Demand function is as follows:
P = 600 3Q1 3Q2 c1 = c2 = 300 = marginal cost of both firms
Comparing the inverse demand function to the P = a b(Q1 + Q2) form we get, a = 600 ; b = 3
We arrive at the equilibrium output using the reaction functions for both firms which we get by
equating the firm s Marginal Revenue to Marginal Cost to maximise profits:
Firm 1 s Reaction Function: Q1 = (a c1)/2b Q2/2
Q1 = 300/6 Q2/2 = 50 Q2/2
Also,
Firm 2 s Reaction Function: Q2 = (a c2)/2b Q1/2
в†’ Q2 = 50 Q1/2
Solving both equations, Q1 = Q2 = 100/3 = 33.33
Price = 600 100 100 = 400
Firm 1 s profit P*Q1 C*Q1 = 400*100/3 300*100/3 = 10,000/3 = $3,333.33
Firm 2 s profit P*Q2 C*Q2 = 400*100/3 300*100/3 = 10,000/3 = $3,333.33

The Distribution of Alu Genotypes
The Distribution of Alu Genotypes in a Group of Level 4 Students The Distribution of Alu
Genotypes Introduction DNA is mostly found in the nucleus of nearly every cell in the human
body, it contains the biological instructions that make us unique. Located on the genome at different
locations are short, identifiable sequences known as Alu insertion polymorphisms. The application
of Alu elements has recently become used in forensic identification and paternity testing. Alu
elements are found in nearly one million copies per haploid gene which approximately 5 10% of
the human genome. The Alu elements can be found bordering genes or gathered with other
interspersed repeated sequences (Primrose 1998). Alu elements are repeated... Show more content

The Powerful Emotions Presented By D H Lawrence
The powerful emotions presented by D H Lawrence In Piano are loss and nostalgia of his
mother and childhood, which are brought up at a wrong moment by a memory. The poet,
similarly to Sylvia Plath, wrote this poem when he was experiencing these emotions after he lost
his mother who he was very close with. The loss is first presented in the lines, A child sitting
under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings And pressing the small, poised feet of a
mother who smiles as she sings. This creates a very vivid picture and therefore later on in the
poem causes the speaker to miss his mother and childhood. By pressing the small, poised feet the
speaker was helping and interacting with his mother, who was dear and kind to him as suggested
by the words, ...a mother who smiles This emphasises that she loved him and tried to enjoy every
moment with his son. This sentence is very light and gentle, just like a memory. However in the
next sentence the speaker uses a word betrays me back which suggest that he does not want to
remember the past at that certain moment, however the wave like nostalgia, which was summoned
by the sounds of piano, drowns him in the memories of his past which we can see in the lines, ...till
the heart of me weeps to belong To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside And
hymns in the cozy parlor, the tinkling piano our guide. The metaphorical winter represents danger
outside his house and the cozy parlor safety inside

Women s Portrayal Of Women Essay
Woman s portrayal has changed over the years. In history, there was times where women were
deprived of men s privileges, and fortunately things changed over the years. Men s perception on
women has changed over the years as well. In history, women were treated as if they were alive
to compliment men, and just be in the background while men thrived. There were expectations
that women would have to depict, and stepping out of the ordinary was not respectable. A great
way to see the changes of the way women are viewed, and how much progress the worlds made
with gender equality can be looked at through an example of contemporary drama, and media.
Women staring in Media nowadays have roles that are completely different than in the past, it
shows progress. TV shows nowadays who have leading women, have women who portray a
powerful, strong, intelligent, and in charge persona. It s not rare to see women having leading
roles in musicals on Broadway, or big roles on TV. Typically, the roles we see motivate us, or
women feel they can relate. Perfect examples of this strong and independent persona would be
characters seen on TV such as Olivia Pope from ABC Family s hit show Scandal, and Daenerys
Targaryen from HBO s hit series Game of Thrones. Scandal Game of Thrones both include
characters who exemplify heroic attributes and power that would never be acceptable in the past
for a woman to obtain. Scandal has Olivia Pope portrayed as the woman who can handle anything.

Rabies Essay
Abstract
Rabies is a highly infectious viral disease that can easily ruin and eventually end the lives of both
humans and animals alike. Rabies comes in two forms for animals. It comes in the form of
paralytic rabies, which is the kind that puts you in paralysis right from the beginning, skipping the
symptoms of agitation and excitability. Rabies also appears in the form of furious rabies, which is
completely different in the way that it makes the victim restless, vicious and agitated. When
humans get rabies, their symptoms start out with simple headaches and fevers and later progresses
to terrible things such as becoming hydrophobic because of painful throat spasms and paralysis. A
definite diagnosis of rabies needs lab analysis of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paralytic rabies sometimes cause animals to become depressed and to hide off somewhere by
themselves. As the disease progresses, it takes the animal into paralysis. The symptoms of these
rabies are things like an animal s inability to raise its head up and even to make sounds. It might
also be unusually weak and lethargic. These unfortunate animals also look as if they re choking and
have continuous drool coming from their mouths. Another thing is it sometimes causes an animal
to lose its fear of humans. Any animal (that by nature is usually shy) seen being social with people
should raise alarm that the animal probably has rabies.
Furious rabies are just the opposite. They cause animals to become over ecstatic towards other
animals, people, and even stationary objects. Animals with furious rabies seem to be agitated and
restless at all times. In some cases, animals with furious rabies will gnaw and bite at their own
limbs. These animals are constantly growling at everything they see. They have also been known
for getting involuntary and intense seizures that are terribly painful for the animal.
People can also be infected by this destructive disease. Their symptoms are things like a fever,
headache, and loss of appetite. These people also have a terrible itching and burning at the

The Theme Of Truth In O s Powman By Piers Plowman
Piers Plowman s whole plot revolves around truth. Piers Plowman is full of many references to
truth. It is defined as all that is morally excellent in the world. Throughout the text, Truth is given
all characteristics of God and the plowman does what is asked of him as if it was his God. This
is very important in itself because if you live a truthful life you will go to heaven. So, if you look
up to truth and almost worship the idea of truth and living a truthful existence, you will be in good
fortune in Gods eyes. The lady of lovely looks mentions truth in the first passus:
Truth is therein
And would have that ye do as his word teacheth (13 14).

Firstly, The Wife of Bath differs in her vision of sexuality. She has had many previous husbands,

The Wife of Bath embraces her sexuality, however for Margery Kempe it is a different story.
Chastity is a necessity for her relationship with God. Although not always chastised, she was able
to let go of all previous sexual notions towards her husband in order to cleanse her body for God.

shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people. (Con Law Textbook, pg.
547) Justice Harlan wrote a concurring opinion in which he argued that privacy is protected by the
Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Justice White also wrote a concurring opinion
based on the due process clause. Justices Black and Stewart were the dissenters in the case. Justice
Black stated that the Court talks about a constitutional right of privacy as though there is some
constitutional provision or provisions forbidding any law to ever be passed which might abridge
the privacy of individuals. But there is not. (Con Law Textbook, pg. 548) Justice Black argued that
the right to privacy is not found anywhere in the Constitution. He also goes on to say I like my
privacy as well as the next one, but I am nevertheless compelled to admit that government has a
right to invade it unless prohibited by some specific constitutional provision. For these reasons I
cannot agree with the Court s judgement and the reasons it gives for holding this law
unconstitutional. (Con Law Textbook, pg. 548) Justice Black also strongly criticized and disagreed
with the majority opinion s interpretation of the Ninth and Fourteenth Amendments. Justice Stewart
stated in his dissent that In the course of its opinion the Court refers to no less than six

What Is The Legacy Of John Marshall
Michael J. Scinto
Professor Paul Rego
American Government (Politics 113)
20 Nov 2014
The Legacy of John Marshall Few individuals have left as prominent a mark on the United States as
Chief Justice John Marshall. An ardent Federalist, he worked throughout most of his life to separate
the powers of national and state government, furthering the agenda of his party long after they
dissolved.
In Marbury v. Madison, he led the Court in striking down an act of Congress that was in conflict
with the Constitution, legitimizing the doctrine of judicial review. Over the course of his thirty
four year term, Marshall oversaw numerous landmark cases, his decisions in which played an
undeniably critical role in the early development of American law. Thanks to his firm hand and
consistent principles, he was able to secure the institutional power of the Supreme Court in the face
of staunch Jeffersonian opposition affirming its place as an equal among the Executive and
Legislative branches of government. The Supreme Court was established in 1789, with its powers
stated in Article III of the newly ratified United States Constitution. In the years leading up to the
Marshall era, the Court was little more than a shadow of its future self. It lacked both the prestige
and authority of the latter 19th century. John Jay and his successors, Rutledge and Ellsworth
oversaw few cases, and ever fewer significant ones. Often cited as an example of the early Court s
inefficiency, their most

  • 3. Comparing Ancient Greek Architecture, Doric, And... As the saying goes, great art is mad with its own loveliness. Over the decades, Greek inspired architecture has been seen all over the world. Ideas are often borrowed while constructing buildings, monuments, and even houses. Greeks mostly used wood, limestone, unbaked bricks, terracotta and metal for construction. Most architecture were inspired by religion, politics, and form of recreation. Of all designs from Greek architecture three of them have withstood the test of time and their application can be seen today. They include Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian order. However, each order is distinct from the other and one cannot differentiate unless trained. This paper will look at Doric and Corinthian orders while comparing and contrasting them. It will also trace their prevalence and popularity throughout history. Doric style of architecture has been the most famous. It is used all over the world today. It is found in Parthenon and Acropolis and can be distinguished from other orders as it has vertical column and a plain roof. Colonies of south Italy and Sicily have also used it. Doric order is, however, the simplest. Roman Doric is the most common form today. This column consists of around capital which has a narrow neckband. It has a shaft that may be plain or fluted and normally rest on a base. Its entablature is structured to have a distinctive frieze with triglyphs which are an upright projecting grooved panel. This triglyph is normally set in line with each column. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Controversy In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies When William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies and many other books, won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983, it surprised an abundance of people; many critics, especially in the United States, did not agree with the Academy s choice, leading to a large amount of controversy. One of the Nobel judges, Artur Lundkvist, even spoke out against Golding because he did not think Golding met Alfred Nobel s standards. The 1983 Nobel Literature Prize deserved to go to William Golding because his writing, complex and obscure, met the requirements stated by Alfred Nobel in his will. On October 6th, 1983, the Swedish Academy announced William Golding as the winner of the Nobel Literature Prize, generat[ing] far more controversy than its annual announcements usually call forth (Bufkin). There will always be a disagreement when a person is selected in our society, but when the Academy selected Golding as the laureate in 1983, critics disputed over the decision. A large amount of the controversy surrounding Golding and the Prize erupted in the United States. Many Americans disapproved of Golding because he did not have a public personality and did not support a cause. For example, Golding is not a political or public man, and an English writer called him independent and hermetic. Also, Golding wrote intellectually, making his books complex and... For example, in Lord of the Flies, the Lord of the Flies says, there isn t anyone to help you. Only me. And I m the Beast (Golding 143). In this quotation, Golding reveals some of the dark morals that he acquired from participating in World War II. His many other books also include similar morals about man s fall from grace, but the books contain some positive thoughts. • 5. The Grand Scheme of the New Imperialism Since it became a necessity in the 19th and 20th century to rule over other nations for economic and political prosperity, the Europeans did the same for the sake of the mother country, which greatly influenced the respective aspects. The European or the new Imperialism is a movement, which brought the worldwide effect of white supremacy. As far as the ideas of historians are concerned, new Imperialism was the product of economic rationale. It is obvious that every nation looks forward to uplift their economic status. Although the new Imperialism was a product of economic rational, it was largely justified for social and political reasons such as civilizing missions to help these countries out. While social effects helped to cause the new Imperialism, it was the economic advantages that forced the major plays of Europe into the grand scheme of the new Imperialism. The new Imperialism started by launching a new era of expansionism, they conquered territory by colonizing nations where it was easy to gain material wealth. . The imperial countries by the economic and technological powers tried to restructure the reliant nations and regions that could supply them with the raw materials and food products . This was primarily done in Africa and Asia on the basis of colonial invasion. The European nations viewed Africa and Asia as a means to materials such as coal, iron and copper. They chose these continents based on the material wealth and as well the convenience of their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Results Of Gothic Architecture The results of Gothic architecture in York In the 12th century architecture saw the progression from Romanesque architecture to the Gothic era, which saw the forthcoming of the prodigious cathedrals that were to become the architectural symbol of the middle ages. This was during a time of high aspirations. As well structural developments Gothic architecture is also associated with a change in thinking and social attitudes that are represented in numerous ways, essentially appealing to emotions. After the fall of the Roman Empire the political culture shifted from the feudal system to monarchy, bringing forth a cultural identity. Poetry and art became more personal and intimate, giving people individuality. It reflected the social sustainability of the modern age and the growing confidence of the Christian Church of Rome, which successfully lead crusades to reclaim the Holy land from the Islamic occupants. The representation of Christ changed from a godlike hero in the battle between good and evil to a tortured human figure that sacrificed him self on the cross for the sins of mankind. To respond, architects believed that light was the closest substance to God s true presence and focused on making a network of ribs and vaults reaching towards heaven. Pointed arches looked towards the sky as the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine on it: for the glory of God did lighten it . (The Bible. • 9. Language And Literature Courses And Ap U.s. History I ve always struggled to break the boundaries entangled within the composition of traditional essays. Between AP Language/Literature courses and AP U.S. History, my writing had become noticeably formulaic; I relied heavily on templates and felt awkward abandoning the traditional five paragraph essay. Although the formulaic way of writingassisted in my capability to critically recognize the difference between opinion and evidence, the patterns were not helpful in developing my organizational skills. My ability to form argumentative ideas from given prompts strengthened, while unity and coherence within paragraphs proved to be my downfall. It was not until my second semester of English at the University of Georgia that I noticed my organization was not comprehensible to the reader. Some paragraphs were like mazes; they left the reader wondering how the first sentence connected to the following sentence. Along with organization, English 1102 helped identify my lack of transitional phrases within paragraphs and the tendency for my argument to shift. Nonetheless, this course has highlighted my strengths as a writer, including my ability to incorporate evidence so that it supports an intelligent, challenging thesis. The most interesting aspect I discovered about my writing this semester is my ability to read, appreciate, and interpret a piece of literature and write analytically about it. In this course I ve grown to change my reading process completely. I had a tendency to read ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Red Beard Reflection Red Beard is a film that reminds one that the distance to be travelled is far longer than the distance that was already covered. Not only in the case of medical studies, which happened to be the professional field of the protagonist of the movie but also in the whole gamut of activities of all people in this world: in their professions, in arts, in sports, in literature, in studies, in knowledge and in case of anything and everything, the unknown is several times more than the known and is spread like a vast ocean. This realisation is the essence of this Kurosawa Movie. Most of the humans are trapped in the notion that there is nothing more there to know and everything about them is perfect. It is nothing but a by product of a form of emotional weakness. When the world is shrinking to one s own self, people tend to have a wrong conviction that there is nothing beyond the limits they have set for themselves and even if there is something, it is not worthy compared to the things they have known or earned. It is hard to come out of that marshland. Every step one takes there is digging into one s own self: into... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 11. Comparing The Visit To Grandmother And The Leap Does one truly know how ones child might feel towards his or her parent? In the two short stories A Visit to Grandmother by William Melvin Kelly and The Leap by Louise Erdrich some similarities can be found in the children that grow up there early life not knowing there parents love them. The children do this because of simple misunderstandings between the parents actions towards them and the actions towards there siblings. This causes the characters to feel unloved and second rate. Which either causes the characters to grow or to grow bitter for the rest of the characters lives. The parents could have prevented most of the young characters bitter feelings just by treating the parents kids equally and telling them they are loved. Now what may happen to the two young characters in there later years will the characters be able to grow out of the tragedies of there early life s and become stronger or will the characters become bitter there entire life.... The reason for this is because of the simple misunderstanding that sense G.L. gets more lenience, gets more attention, and is lighter skinned in a racist world that the mother loves G.L. more in Charles s eyes. Now to The Leap the daughter feels she is lesser because her mom is the bees knees and she wants to be just like her mother but she feels like a lesser form of the baby her mother never had. She grows up feeling this way like a lesser version of some one elites but even with that she grows stronger gradually and the clue that gives this away is the lamb that grows more definite every year (Erdrich 48)this indicates the daughter growing become ing her own person. • 12. Southern Appalachian Culture When one thinks of the Appalachians, one generally thinks of the mountains of the southeastern region of the United States. However the Mountain range itself actually begins in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, extending from there for almost 2,000 miles (3,200 km) to central Alabama in the United States. Thus the region also forms the eastern counterpart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Southern Appalachia alone includes three hundred counties covering most of West Virginia and the Southern Highlands or Upland South. The mountains form a natural barrier between the eastern Coastal Plain and the vast Interior Lowlands of North America. As a result, they have played a vital role in the settlement and development of the entire continent. Despite the vast geographical distance, the peoples of the Appalachians (state side) maintain a unified identity through shared cultural identities; dialect, building practices, folk music and dance, crafts, superstitions and religion, and moonshine unite all 1500 miles of these mountains. The inhabitants of this region largely descended from English and Scottish Irish folk traditions, brought to the region by colonial immigrants. There were also smaller influences from other ... European countries were in a state of disarray and America found itself searching for the meaning of life and happiness. Radical changes will occur in the U.S. involving politics and social ideas. Some people were shedding their old traditional skins to accept the new modern world, while others are trying to hold onto the old ways of the world. A reason America disliked immigrants was because anarchism and socialism was associated with them, especially those from countries with failing governments. Stereotypes were common even then. Now, the KKK, which had become very popular in the late 1800 s, found itself with an influx of new members. They called for 100 percent Americanism, which I am sure appealed to many Americans at the time and only allowed white Protestants to join (794). It is known that the KKK were fundamentalist, many people from the South but also other parts of the country joining. Fundamentalism and Modernists were butting heads at the time, especially with the Scopes Trial / Monkey Trial was in the air. A school teacher, John Scopes taught his students about evolution and was arrested in Tennessee. The attorney defending Scopes was Charles Darrow. William Jennings Bryan, whom had been the Secretary of State, had recently denounced Darwinism due to his firm religious views and supported the prosecution during the Scopes Trial. I believed religion was part of the government a bit too much during these times. It is the same today because we all want a president or government official to have the same belief as we do. This would almost guarantee the laws we want being approved, such as a liberal democrat who support same sex marriage would be in favor of Hillary Clinton now. • 14. Social Tension Surrounding The United States Essay Introduction In what has become known as the issue of the century by many (Buchanan, 2015), immigration has been a topic of debate and an area of sociological tension for several decades in the United States. It can be seen daily in our newspapers, television shows and especially in America politics. In fact, it could be argued that this form of social tension in the United States goes as far back as 1492 when Christopher Columbus first stepped foot on what is now North America. It was from this point that social tension surrounding immigration into the modern United States truly began between early European explorers and the existing Native Americans. Social tension surrounding immigration began to peak when large scale immigration into the United States started in the late 1800 s. In the early days of immigration into the United States the social tension surrounded the diaspora of the Native Americans which lead to the creation of indian reservations (cite US History.org). This early social tension primarily surrounded the obtainment of land and the establishment of property. As we move forward into history, modern immigration tension in America is more focused on immigration from Mexico. This paper will explore immigration into the United States and help determine why it is a source of social tension. Reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People By Stephen R. Covey, really helped me to better understand what a whole life concept was and how to apply it to daily life. In Habit 1 Be Proactive I was introduced to the concentric circles model as seen Fig.1. Starting out with the circle of concern which includes worries fears such as national debt, nuclear war, health, personal relationships and problems at work. Outside of my circle of concern are the things that I do not have any involvement in. Inside my circle of concern there are things that I have no real control of, also there are things I can... By staying in quadrant II you will spend less time in I, and have more time for III and IV. As an engineer developing great time management skills is a must. By staying in quadrant II you will build the relationships need to move forward, and open more doors for the future. Also this will free up more time for those projects that have a deadline and require long hours. Habit 4 Win/Win Win/Win is a character based code where all parties involved gain something. Win/Win does not show life as a competition where someone loses. Also Covey says that if a mutual benefit can t be found then no deal, agree to disagree agreeably. In today s world I believe Win/Win should be applied with the environment in mind especially with nature resources decreasing. Design products that can be easily recycled or having longer lifespans would help reduce our carbon foot print. Habit 5 Seek First to Understand, Then to be understood Communication is one of the most important life skills. In Habit 5 Covey tells us that listening is the most important part of communication. Covey also describes empathic listening, listening with intent to understand the other person s frame of reference and feelings. The filmis only instrumental, and due to the fact, the film focuses on an older couple dealing with growing older and their time with a young man named Billy, I believe the score is appropriate. When looking at the theme from The Goonies, the use of piano and strings are apparent in both films. From the beginning of the film, the score was a peaceful piano piece that went along with the scenery. It was gentle and non threatening. There is a flute, or other woodwind, that joins the piano, and this is when a car is seen driving by. Later strings join the ensemble and the music all continues to be soft. Within this paper I plan to discuss what mental illness is, how mental illness affects individuals, and the stereotypes that come along with mental illnesses. The question I plan to answer would be How has mental illness been perceived and treated throughout history? According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, mental illness is defined as being a medical condition that disturbs a person s thinking, feeling, mood, and ability to relate to others (NAMI). Serious mental illness cost America approximately 193.2 billion dollars in lost earnings each year resulting in about 60 percent of adults and about one half of youth with mental illness to receive no mental health services (NAMI). In the United Kingdom about half of the population is said to experience some sort of mental illness in a year which leads to discrimination (MentalHealth). With so many people in the world experiencing mental illness leads many to wonder how it is treated within the different cultures. This paper will explore OCD, ADHD, and Autism and the causes of these different types of mental illnesses. I will also discuss the treatment of these mental illnesses as well as the stigmatization that comes along with these disorders across the multicultural system. There are many factors that could be the cause of this. Looking at the demographic transition theory in conjunction with the Malthusian theory brought valuable insight for me. The demographic theory says there are four stages to population growth that are predictable. Those who are in their late 80 s and above were capable of seeing all four of these stages in America. As they aged and the stages for population advanced so did technology. Malthusian theory claims that there are three factors that prevents the human population exceed its carrying capacity, which are food, disease, and war. Those who lived through the four stages of America were lucky enough to see technology advance to prevent those factors in being lethal to our population. • 36. John Bowlby And John Bowlby s Attachment Theory This study focused on the Attachment theory in which it is stated how attachment is a deep and enduring emotional bond that connects one person to another across time and space (Ainsworth, 1973; Bowlby, 1969). Attachment theory is a theory that s connected to psychology, studied first by John Bowlby. It explains the relevance of getting attached to something in an individual s development. It is observed among children relying on their parents for stability, and that there is an existing need for them due to such reliance. The attachment theory is most commonly observed in the parent child scenario, as it is in Bowlby s study which regarded the existence of the attachment as a child needing some sort of person to give them a security and ... The main idea stating simply that the first few years of an infant is critical and separation or disruption can leave effects on the child. The third point is that the long term consequences of maternal deprivation might consist of delinquency, reduced intelligence, increased aggression, depression and affectionless psychopathy. The last being an inability to show affection or concern towards others, for example a lack of guilt for anti social behavior. The question that needs to be answered is if older parenthood involves more risks with women s health, pregnancy, and birth. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), birth rates among women aged 30 34 exceeded those women aged 25 29 in the US in 2016 and this is the first time this happened in thirty years. Currently, the average age for women who are having their first child is 28 years of age. In 2015 it was 26.4 and in 2014 it was 26.3. National Cranberry Case Analysis National Cranberry is a cooperative of berry growers around North America that share common production facilities and for the last several years have been experiencing capacity bottlenecks among other issues. After initial analysis, two main factors that contributed to a decrease in production were found. The first issue in the business is that the supply trucks and drivers delivering the harvest were not properly organized and there was not enough space and organization to allow for smooth offloading of several trucks a day. The second major issue is the rampant absenteeism and need for overtimework based on shortage of workers. This has driven the cost of running the business up and drastically reducing profitability. A lesser but... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, some trucks had to wait for up to 3 hours to dump their loads which was solely attributed to the holding bins which could only hold 7200bbls total of both dry and wet berries. Additionally, out of the 27 holding bins, only 11 were actually set up to hold wet berries which made the constrain even more difficult. Once that section of the plant was full there was very little that crews in receiving could do to alleviate the problem. In the next section of the production process, dechaffing was possible at a rate of 4500bbl/hour which over a 12 hour period would be more than enough capacity even on the heaviest barrel deliveries days. Where the bottlenecks really start to become apparent is in the drying stage of the wet berries where only 3 drying stations existed and in a combined effort could only dry at 600bbl/hour. In the harvest of 1980, there was 58% of the total capacity coming in as wet berries which was already over the capacity based on a 12 hour day. In 1981, the harvest in set to bring in 70% of the berries as wet berries which would further slow the overall process. Assuming that the Kiwanee dumpers, dechaffing and de stoning machinery were all working to their full capacity of 4500bbl/hour, the increase to 70% wet berries would overload the driers within the first few hours of production. The Powerful Emotions Presented By D H Lawrence The powerful emotions presented by D H Lawrence In Piano are loss and nostalgia of his mother and childhood, which are brought up at a wrong moment by a memory. The poet, similarly to Sylvia Plath, wrote this poem when he was experiencing these emotions after he lost his mother who he was very close with. The loss is first presented in the lines, A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings. This creates a very vivid picture and therefore later on in the poem causes the speaker to miss his mother and childhood. By pressing the small, poised feet the speaker was helping and interacting with his mother, who was dear and kind to him as suggested by the words, ...a mother who smiles This emphasises that she loved him and tried to enjoy every moment with his son. In history, there was times where women were deprived of men s privileges, and fortunately things changed over the years. Men s perception on women has changed over the years as well. In history, women were treated as if they were alive to compliment men, and just be in the background while men thrived. There were expectations that women would have to depict, and stepping out of the ordinary was not respectable. A great way to see the changes of the way women are viewed, and how much progress the worlds made with gender equality can be looked at through an example of contemporary drama, and media. Women staring in Media nowadays have roles that are completely different than in the past, it shows progress. TV shows nowadays who have leading women, have women who portray a powerful, strong, intelligent, and in charge persona. It s not rare to see women having leading roles in musicals on Broadway, or big roles on TV. Typically, the roles we see motivate us, or women feel they can relate. Scinto Professor Paul Rego American Government (Politics 113) 20 Nov 2014 The Legacy of John Marshall Few individuals have left as prominent a mark on the United States as Chief Justice John Marshall. An ardent Federalist, he worked throughout most of his life to separate the powers of national and state government, furthering the agenda of his party long after they dissolved. In Marbury v. Madison, he led the Court in striking down an act of Congress that was in conflict with the Constitution, legitimizing the doctrine of judicial review. Over the course of his thirty four year term, Marshall oversaw numerous landmark cases, his decisions in which played an undeniably critical role in the early development of American law. Thanks to his firm hand and consistent principles, he was able to secure the institutional power of the Supreme Court in the face of staunch Jeffersonian opposition affirming its place as an equal among the Executive and Legislative branches of government. The Supreme Court was established in 1789, with its powers stated in Article III of the newly ratified United States Constitution. In the years leading up to the Marshall era, the Court was little more than a shadow of its future self. It lacked both the prestige and authority of the latter 19th century. John Jay and his successors, Rutledge and Ellsworth oversaw few cases, and ever fewer significant ones. Often cited as an example of the early Court s inefficiency, their most ...
