America Must Invest in Energy Efficiency Essays
America Must Invest in Energy Efficiency
In recent years our country has had many debates over what must be done to lessen the amount of
oil that our country consumes. It is well known that we need to make some type of change to help
not only the environment, but also lessen our reliance on imported oil. President Bush recently
announced his new plan that could someday greatly reduce that amount of oil that Americans use
by replacing oil with hydrogen fuel cells. Although this plan is a step in the right direction, it is not
the answer. There are far too many downsides that could actually hurt our country in the long run.
One problem is that the plan proposed by Bush will take far too long before any changes will be
seen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
. If cars were required to run on 55 miles per gallon, the U.S. would save about five million
barrels per day. This alone is about seven times the amount of oil that was imported from Iraq
alone last year (Kennedy 11). All major auto companies can already make cars that run on
seventy miles per gallon; meaning that Clinton s goal was nearly reached. However, because
funding is being cut by the new plan, these cars will most likely never be available in the large
market. We do need to someday totally end our reliance on oil, especially in cars, but why stop
funding a plan that would have an immediate effect? Money is simply being wasted due to the
fact that millions of dollars were spent on a plan that is being ended because funding is suddenly
being spent on new areas of research. We need to continue funding Clinton s plan even if we do
start more research in hydrogen fuel cells.
A second major problem with the plan is not easy to see at first. You must look much closer at
what types of research is being done. There are two ways that hydrogen fuel cells can be made.
One is by a reaction with oxygen. These cells are about 70% efficient and the only emissions are
water vapor. The second way it by using oil or coal to make the cells. These cells are about 33%
efficient and release harmful emissions into the atmosphere (Abelson 1469). I feel that we should
fund research into using oxygen as opposed to fossil fuels when making hydrogen

Adaptive Radiation And Species Diversification
Adaptive Radiation and Species Diversification
Through a common ancestor, species diverge into new populations which eventually adapt to their
new environments and evolve to become their own sub species and then distinct species. This
occurs through the process of adaptive radiation. The population of an ancestor species radiates
outwards to different ecological niches. From there, these now separate populations adapt to their
new habitats and resources in isolation. This gives them opportunity to evolve and become their
own species based off of genetic changes that make them most fit for their new environments.
Examples of these kinds of adaptations derive from geographic isolation from other species,
reduction of gene flow among the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From there, the newly inhabited populations performed the process of specialization in which they
adapted to their individual resources and environments. This differentiated the populations and
confirmed the process of speciation as they became their own species in isolation. Specialization
can be found in the different beaks of the finch species. The different sizes and shapes of the
beaks are a result of the different sizes and shapes of the seeds that the populations feed on in
their own niches. For example, bigger and bulkier beaks can help crack open harder seeds,
whereas smaller beaks can be more successful in obtaining smaller seeds. And longer and thinner
beaks can help reach into flowers, whereas medium sized can be more successful in obtaining
insects. Because of this separation in characteristics, these different finches do not continue to breed
with each other, resulting in fully separated species with their own traits. The specialization found
between and within the species is a direct result of the geographic isolation that occurs from
adaptive radiation.
Gene flow is the movement of genes among populations that ultimately reduces differences within
and between species. This process keeps populations genetically similar, but when restrictions on
gene flow are present, separation and speciation are able to occur.

John Friedrich, charged with and eventually convicted of the murder of 38 year old Gayle
Meggyesy, gestures as he testifies on the seventh day of his trial in Holmes County Common

The Role Of Resilience In Adolescents
Children and adolescents are resilient. According to McWhirter, McWhirter, McWhirter, and
McWhirter (2013), resilience is the capacity to adapt and function successfully despite
experiencing chronic stress and adversity (p. 130). Resilience is also the ability to come back
from a negative situation and turn the adversity into something positive (Prince Embury, 2015).
When adolescents are placed in a stressful or difficult situation, they strive to make the best of it;
however, there are some adolescents who struggle to make the best of the situation they are in,
which leads to risky behavior. Family factors tend to influence resiliency as well as protective and
riskfactors. Family factors that influence resiliency in adolescents is parental... Show more content

At risk youth are still capable of getting involved with school and community activities. Some
adolescents become involved with art, music, and drama so they can express themselves
artistically. Others get involved with sports because of the family like atmosphere and team
building exercises. Others become involved with local mentoring organizations like Big Brothers,
Big Sisters and church youth groups. All of these activities serve as protective factors for at risk
youth, and help adolescents develop resiliency. According to McWhirter et al (2013), the social
support networks of the larger community also help to ameliorate the effects of stress on children
(p. 131). Adolescents rely on their peers, youth leaders, coaches, and teachers to help them develop
resilience. One of the risks of depending on peers to help develop resilience is peer group
pressure can be either a very powerful ally or a formidable antagonist, dissuading or encouraging
problem behavior (McWhirter et al, 2013, p. 116). As a result, it is imperative for adolescents to
choose their friends wisely, especially if they come from a difficult home background. School and
community environments help adolescents develop the skills they need to overcome their
difficulties (McWhirter et al, 2013, p. 146). Schools and communities also help adolescents develop
resiliency because they provide the support they need to

Django Reinhardt s Impact On Jazz
Considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Django Reinhardt has had an unparalleled
impact on the development of guitar in jazz. This essay will explore the influence of Reinhardt
with particular emphasis on his talent as a guitarist and composer which earned him tremendous
respect in the world of jazzand subsequently enhanced his authority in defining the genre.
Moreover, this essay will delve into Reinhardt s integral role in the creation of gypsy jazz and how
this genre has influenced the development of jazz. Finally, this essay will look at the way
Reinhardt has influenced the development of jazz guitar by inspiring other musicians. Through

Whilst in Paris, Reinhardt collaborated with numerous American jazz musicians including
saxophonists Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins, and cornetist Rex Stewart. Due to the
prevalence of Jazz in America, it could be argued that future generations of jazz guitarists were
influenced more by Charles Christian and other American jazz guitarists than Django, however,
Reinhardt s influence was transmitted via these musicians with Mary Osborne recalling a
concert in Bismark during the late 1930 s when Christian performed a note for note version of
Reinhardt s recording of St. Louis Blues .9 This was also the case with Les Paul who learnt
Django s solos by listening to his recordings and went on to perform them across America. There
are a myriad of other celebrated guitar players who have cited Reinhardt as an inspiration for their
music including Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, B.B. King, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana,
Vernon Reid, Andres Segovia and guitar legend Jeff Beck who claimed that, after listing through
all of his own inspirations, of course, it all started with Django. 10 The influence of Django
Reinhardt has also been transmitted through popular culture with Django s music being used in a
variety of Woody Allen movies such Sweet and Lowdown and Stardust Memories as well as more
mainstream films such as The Matrix, The Aviator and Chocolat. This has allowed Reinhardt s

What Is The Difference Between Ancient Mesopotamia And...
Ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt are two of the earliest and greatest civilizations to ever
exist. They both show the transition from a Paleolithic society into a settled civilization.
Nevertheless, Mesopotamia has been a worldwide centre of awe and amazement . The first written
language created by the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamiabecame the first means of of written
communication for humankind. The spread of agriculture created a new way of life and evolved
man from nomadic hunters into civilized people . Most important of all, the creation of the wheel
opened up a new way for transportation to be carried out. Between both civilizations, it ancient
Mesopotamia left the greatest impact on posterity.
To begin, the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia introduced the first forms of written language
Cuneiform. The beginning of writing was an essential tool that transferred thoughts and speech
into text. It was extremely important and allowed for the beginning of record keeping of all sorts.
At this point, writing was used only for record keeping, and thus only concrete words(nouns) such
as ox , grain and sheep were needed. As society became more complex, the language evolved
enabling signs to be used...and eventually abstract thoughts (Newman 44). The world came to know
a unique way of expressing thoughts and learned to convey messages through writing. From then
on, records could be kept, history and stories could be recorded and abstract thinking could shine

The Importance Of An Exemplary Person In Confucius
The exemplary person (junzi) is someone who is worthy of leadership and respect. To do one s
utmost (zhong), observing ritual propriety (li), practicing filial piety (xiao), knowing what is
appropriate (yi) and having a deep love of learning (haoxne) are crucial aspect to becoming such a
commanding and versatile individual. These qualities, however, do not come easily as the way
(dao) requires the types of habits and commitments that the average personwould normally find
excessive. Nevertheless, for those did who managed to persevere they found themselves walking
the path towards harmony. Although some may have achieved harmony, the questions must be
asked: how and why did these seemingly arbitrary ideas work? How does loving to learn and doing
ones duty make a person exemplary? For Confuciusthis was no easy task to explain. Compounding
the issue further is that many may find contradictions within the Analects itself. Despite this, these
qualities do promote the type of virtues that, in mind of Confucius at least, can create what some
many consider to be an exemplary person.
Doing one s utmost is something many may think comes naturally. This direct approach may seem
easy on the surface, nonetheless, for Confucius doing ones utmost requires a much more nuanced
approach. It is not enough for the exemplary person to do their best, but they must also aim to help
their peers, community and superiors. When ritual propriety is observed and the exemplary person is

Lily s Choice in The House of Mirth Essays
Lily s Choice in The House of Mirth
Near the beginning of The House of Mirth, Wharton establishes that Lily would not indeed have
cared to marry a man who was merely rich: she was secretly ashamed of her mothers crude
passion for money (38). Lily, like the affluent world she loves, has a strange relationship with
money. She needs money to buy the type of life she has been raised to live, and her relative
poverty makes her situation precarious. Unfortunately, Lily has not been trained to obtain money
through a wide variety of methods. Wharton s wealthy socialites do not all procure money in the
same way: money can be inherited, earned working in a hat shop, won at cards, traded scandalously

Lily Bart has to die because she is completely incapable of adapting to this world of direct
transactions, and in the end the only two paths she sees both lie firmly in that realm.
First, a distinction must be made between direct and indirect transaction. Lily can happily live in a
world where wealth circulates obliquely and freely. When Lily stays as a guest at Bellomont
eating fine food at her hosts expense, she is not receiving payment for goods or services.
Instead, her charm has earned her the benefits of friendship with the rich. Lily is not exactly
being paid to be charming; instead, being charming attracts the generous hospitality and
entertainment of wealthy friends. The distinction between this type of benefit and direct
compensation is enormous. When the reader encounters Lily in Chapter Ten of Book Two, Lily
has fled from the world of Norma Hatch to the milliners shop and it was an offer of direct reward
that made it necessary for Lily to escape. Wharton writes, The sense of being involved in a
transaction she would not have cared to examine too closely had soon afterward defined itself in
the light of a hint from Mr. Stancy that if she saw them through, she would have no reason to be
sorry (293 3). Lily has no qualms about living as a guest of her rich friends, but the idea of selling
her charm and becoming a sort of social mercenary holds no appeal for her: The implication that
such loyalty would meet with a direct

Pierre Elliot Trudeau
As one of the Canada s greatest leaders, Pierre Elliot Trudeau brought change that would change
Canada forever in a positive manner. Although it can be argued that Trudeau s behavior was

politics was superior. He was inspired to change Canadaand make it a better place to live. He did so
by implying the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, multiculturalism, and using laws to make Canada

allowed Canada to be a much more diverse and equal place. It also promotes respect for peoples
distinct cultural identity. Implying multiculturalism to Canada was one of Trudeau s greatest
accomplishments. Pierre Trudeau was a leader who not only brought change by bringing new
laws to Canada, but he changed the way people viewed other laws. Trudeau listened to the
majority, but also protected the rights of the minority which demonstrates he is a strong leader.

doing this, he completely changed the view of the WMA. It had been assumed that the WMA
would be used in times of crisis, such as famines, depressions, pandemics and other serious
situations that are serious to Canada s well being. However, Trudeau demonstrated how it can be

Academic Dishonesty At Todays Education System
Academic Dishonesty in Todays Education System
One of the greatest concerns in schools is academic dishonesty. Over time cheating has increased
drastically for many reasons. As a result of this, institutions have had to enforce strict rules and
create honor codes to protect the integrity of their students. Although academic dishonesty has
several negative effects, students continue to cheat for reasons such as: unclear guidelines, pressure,
being overworked, and lack of effort.
Academic dishonesty takes numerous forms. It can vary from plagiarism to professional
misconduct. Due to this, the definition of what academic dishonesty is has become blurred for not
only students, but teachers as well. More often than not, students are not aware that what they are
doing qualifies as cheating. Colleges and universities do a poor job of educating their students and
instructors on what qualifies as cheating. Although most schools have honor codes in place to
protect their students integrity, the guidelines can lack clear boundaries and consistency. These
guidelines can also lack how instructors are to enforce these rules, leaving them without a clear
process to follow. This can lead to many accidental violations of the honor codes. It is important
institutions regularly reinforce the principles of academic dishonesty, so that students are aware
and can avoid such situations. This cause is less apparent than others, but transpires frequently in
schools everywhere. Grades rather than

David Lurie As A Byronic Hero
...we are not asked to condemn this being with the mad heart, this being with whom there is
something constitutionally wrong. On the contrary, we are invited to understand and sympathize.
But there is a limit to sympathy. For though he lives among us, he not one of us (Coetzee, 2000:
33). The afore stated quote from the novel Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee, is used when discussing a
poem by Lord ByronLara in the novel. Yet it is directly applicable to the protagonist, David Lurie.
Coetzee appeals to the readers to not criticise Lurie too harshly for his actions and to find it in
their heart to sympathise with him. Lurie can therefore be viewed as a Byronic hero. In the
following essay David Lurie will be discussed as a Byronic heroas well as... Show more content on

As a result of his bad choices, made even worse by his refusal to admit guilt, he leaves his urban
existence for the rustic countryside. Once there he takes up residence with his daughter Lucy
and even gets a job as an assistant to euthanize dogs at the local animal shelter. The feature of the
Byronic hero that is the capability of deep and strong affection (Beatty, 2008) is seen in Lurie in his
dealings with Lucy. Nevertheless the single most important aspect that makes David a Byronic
hero is the fact that there are so many similarities between the life of Lurie and Lord Byron
himself. Lurie says: I was not myself. I was no longer a fifty year old divorcГ© at a loose end. I
became a servant of Eros (Coetzee, 2000:52). Byron s personality and actions could be seen as
driven by Eros, so Lurie says he is driven by impulse, as already mentioned in this essay.
Lastly one can surely conclude that David Lurie shows all signs of being a Byronic hero, most
definitely a reflection of Lord Byron himself. Lord Byron once wrote; What is the worst of woes
that wait on age? What stamps the wrinkle deeper on the brow? To view each loved one blotted
from life s page, and be alone on earth, as I am now. Similarly Lurie comes to the realisation that
he is now old and should resign himself to a quiet life without a string of young woman to

Gender Stereotypes In Sesame Street
Many times in our life we take on roles that are based more on myths and on misconceptions than
on fact, for example, gender roles. Since ancient times, it was considered natural for women to
give birth (to boys, if possible) and take care of children and the household. Women were often
considered unqualified for jobs that required physical strength. Men, on the other hand were the
breadwinner of the family. He made sure to provide his family with the basic needs, such as food,
clothing, protection and shelter.
In society, the media is a powerful socializing agent for young children. When children watch TV
they see males act more aggressively than females, and that females are more likely to understand
other people s needs and feelings. All of the children shows in the 1991 Saturday morning TV
lineup had male lead characters. Even on public TV s Sesame Street , most of the Muppet
characters were identified as males. In 2007, there are a few female Muppet characters on Sesame

When children are born, mothers and fathers tend to describe boys as firm, alert, and strong, and
girls as beautiful, pretty and cute. There is no difference between babies except for gender. The
different descriptions reflect the parents attitudes about boys and girls rather than the babies actual
characteristics. These stereotypes find there way into a child s bedroom. A boy s room contains
more vehicles and sports equipment, while a girl s room is more likely to contain dolls. Fathers, in
particular, treat sons and daughters differently. Fathers play more roughly with sons than with
daughters, and usually give them more independence. The different messages that are received by

One Potential Biological Weapon
After thoroughly reading this week s course material, choose one potential weapon from one of
the chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) categories (i.e. you could select
Tularemia, which could be a potential biological weapon). Write in your own words your
assessment of your selected potential weapon s characteristics, accessibility, consequences of
terrorists using that weapon based in researched facts. Please provide any support information

would seem to be the pinnacle weapon for a terrorist group to acquire and would cause mass
destruction and devastation if detonated, especially in a congested civilian area. Nuclear bombs
have been used twice in human history, both of which were dropped on Japan during World War II.
Hiroshimaand Nagasaki lost an estimated 110,000 people due to the blast alone and an unknown
number of individuals were killed or affected in some way in the aftermath from fires and
radiation (Cole 2006). If a similar weapon would be detonated today over a place such as New

Personality Change In Macbeth
In William Shakespeare s Macbeth , the title character undergoes a serious personality change. At
the plays beginning Macbeth is a loyal and honorable man who, unfortunately, is immensely
ambitious. As the play progresses however, Macbeth begins to lose the honor that he held onto so
dearly. Macbeths descent into dishonor is displayed in the two most prominent murders in the first
3 acts: the slaying of Duncan and the assassination of Banquo. When Lady Macbethis convincing
her husband to murderthe king, the reader is able to detect his hesitation to commit such a heinous
crime. Also, the remorse Macbeth feels after he murders Duncan proves that he still possesses
some of that honor and loyalty he originally held in such high regard. However, when Macbeth
has Banquo killed he has changed into a cold and evil man. He, Macbeth, no longer clings to his
honor and loyalty. In Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Macbeth`s has a personality shift that is
showcased in the murders of King Duncan and Banquo. Macbeth is originally depicted as an
honorable and loyal man. However his ambition and his wife lead him to do things he would never
dream of without those influences. The hesitation that Macbeth shows when thinking about
murdering Duncan proves that he started out as an honorable man: I have no spur/ To prick the
sides of my intent, but only/ Vaulting ambition (pg. 40 ll 25 27). Without the prodding of his wife,
Macbeth never would have committed the murder of King Duncan.

I am an international student from Republic of Kazakhstan. This country is located in between
Russia and China, and takes the 9th place by its area in the world. More than twenty years ago my
home country was a part of the Soviet Union. It is worth to mention that we as a nation and an
independent country have experienced a great influence from the Russian Empire that had reflected
on our culture, economy, literature, science, and other aspects of life. However, being under the
Soviet pressure has brought a lot of negative consequences as well. One of them was nuclear

Due to failed attempts, tremendous amount of radioactive gases was released to the atmosphere. As
a result, the region (eastern part of the Kazakhstan, primarily Semipalatinsk region) and nearest
areas had become radioactive and not suitable for further living conditions. Fortunately, there was
one person who was able to prevent inadequate exploitation of the environment and consistent
emissions of the radioactive waste into the atmosphere. His name is Olzhas Suleimenov. He is an
influential and widely admired figure in my country and the former representatives of the Soviet
Union. He turned to politics in the 1980s by founding the Nevada Semipalatinsk antinuclear
movement of 1989. This international environmental movement was considered as one of the first
large scale grassroots protests against the actions of the Soviet government. Moreover, it played a
major role in promoting the eventual denuclearization of the Central Asian region. Nevada
Semipalatinsk campaign targeted to close nuclear sites in Nevada and in the Semipalatinsk
Province of Kazakhstan.
Suleimenov was among the first Eurasian intellectuals who raised awareness of global climate
change, non proliferation, and environmental challenges posed by nuclear disarmament. Eventually,
the Nevada Semipalatinsk movement galvanized support for the closure of all nuclear testing
facilities in Kazakhstan and contributed to trends in nuclear disarmament, non proliferation,

Interesting choices. I think you can make several strong contrast points. I think you might run
into trouble making several strong comparison points. If you can come up with about 4 really

because some of the first things you think of comparing don t line up. They were not used for

Top 10 Worst Roman Emperors
The Roman Empire was vast at its peak and its influence is still felt today in our forms of
military, government, and society in general. Ruled over for a time by emperors, the empire had
periods of greatness and periods of decline. This list looks at ten of the emperors who have left
their mark on history for being so dreadful. Thesis statement? 10. Domitian: was born October
24, 5 in Rome with his uncle Flavius Sabinus. When Vitellius forces besieged Rome and set fire
to the temple where Domitian was hiding, he was able to escape with 1 CE on Pomegranate Street
in the sixth district of Rome, youngest son of the future emperor Vespasian (64 79 CE); his mother,
Flavia Domitilla Major, died in his youth. Unlike his much older brother, Titus, he did not share in
the court education, although many considered him bright. According to historian Suetonius, his
rather degraded youth was spent in poverty. In December of 69 CE while Vespasian was battling
in the eastern provinces in an attempt to secure the throne away from Emperor Vitellius, Domitian
was a friend across the Tiber to safety.
9. Septimius Severus : who lived from 145/146 CE to 211 CE was a Roman Emperor of Libyan

Bertha Of The Great Gatsby
Once upon a time, in a certain kingdom, in a certain land, in a little village, there was a young
woman named Bertha. Bertha did not have much, little money, little food, and no real memory of
her family, the one thing she did have, was her small yellow stone that hung on her neck, this
was the one thing she had to remember her family. She lived in a small hut, which is where she
independently cared and supported herself because there was no one else in her life. At night she
would have small dreams of her family remembering small bits of her childhood when her family
was still with her, invoking them out loud, which is when she would wake up in the middle of the
night. Bertha never knew what happened to all of them, one day they were... Show more content on

For my essay I am going to compare Search For My Tongue by Sujata Bhatt and Presents From My

Presents from my Aunts in Pakistan is autobiographical. It is set in England where the author talks

Blossom is the main word that brings this point across to me. Blossom is supposed to be beautiful
and pretty. Blossom is supposed to be something that everybody likes and Sujata Bhatt is saying
that this is the way that she feels about her home language, which is Gujarati.
Similarly Moniza Alvi appears to awe at her home culture. The simile glistening like an orange
split open that Alvi uses when describing one of her Salwar Kameez s proves this to me.
Glistening like an orange split open is a beautiful simile. It really portrays the beauty of this item of
Pakistani clothing. It makes you picture a thought of an orange split open but then the word
glistening makes you picture something beautiful, shiny and standing out. This word not only
conveys her adoring thoughts for this item of clothing but she makes you think in the same way.
And surely, I think, that if she can feel this way about one item of clothing from this culture, she
must like the rest of them in the same way and in fact she almost certainly will think the same way
about the Pakistani culture in general.
Sujata Bhatt seems to have a deep sense of pride in belonging to two cultures. Even though she
doesn t seem to like or enjoy it she still fells a lot of pride. She has pride in the fact that she not
only belongs to her home culture but she

Netflix And Vs. Hulu
The idea of this show would work best with Netflix and or Hulu. Netflix would be the best fit as
their catalog has a wider range of choices and are more experimental in their stories than typical
mainstream media. Their budget is also higher which I believe would be an added benefit for a
show like this that would be shooting on location more so than on a soundstage, or at least for
the city exteriors. The form of the show would not be a typical sitcom camera set up but more
like how Netflix shoots Master of None (2015 present) or Unbreakable: Kimmy Schmidt (2015
present). I feel like the camera would be less static and more cinematic. There would be longer
tracking shots to give the audience a sense of being there with these characters. The story is
meant to be intimate and that they are there with Julianna, going through these struggles life
throws at her. A typically, sitcom set feels as though the audience is looking into the characters
lives versus being immersed into the story itself. The eight to thirteen episodes seems like a
better fit for this type of a comedy as well. Instead of trying to stretch out a season of twenty
something episodes it makes more sense to try and keep the story line conscious and building off
of each other. In recent years tv shows have stopped being episodes that can be stand alone. A
viewer cannot just tune in to any random episodeof say Stranger Things () and understand what is

Meaning Of Blessed Be Meaning
I have seen the expression Blessed Be quite often as a way of greeting and/or a farewell,
indicating that the person saying/writing it wishes good fortune upon the person receiving it. I
have seen this so many times that I thought that was exactly what it meant and even more, it was
the correct way of greeting or saying goodbye to other people But through out my research I have
learnt and understood that Blessed Be has a deeper meaning and it is one that we should be mindful
when using it.
The true purpose of Blessed Be is a sacred one. It has been used in countless religions to grant the
blessings of the deity onto a person, but not in a general or light hearted way. When we use the

The Effect Of Superannuation On Australia s Economic...
The concept of superannuation was introduced through the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) with
the idea of managing, accumulating and growing assets of members so that once retirement arrives
they can enjoy a higher standard of living without concern for a shortage of income when
retirement occurs, they arrive in the form of pension, lump sums or both. It is further explained by
Dawkins (1992) that our current retirement income system was weak and that there was a need to
strengthen Australia s national saving performance. He stated Greater domestic saving will relax
the current account constraint on Australia s economic performance. It will mean that we can grow
faster without relying so heavily on foreign saving and building up an... Show more content on

Super funds are either accumulation funds or defined funds, accumulated contribution funds are the
most common type of superannuation fund and they act as a bank account, however the benefits
made by them are not capital guaranteed which means that the benefits may be depreciated due to
negative investment returns. These are the sorts of investment risks that comes with
superannuation. Administration charges, policy fees, insurance premiums and taxes are deducted
from members account. Defined benefit funds are based off a formula using the member s final
salary and the years of their employment. This fund also holds investment risk as if the investment
is too high the amount that the employer is required to contribute to the fund can reduce and
contributions may not be needed. The Financial System Inquiry (FSI) released a recommendation
stating Seek broad political agreement for, and enshrine in legislation, the objectives of the
superannuation system and report publicly on how policy proposals are consistent with achieving
these objectives over the long term . This phrase was directed at the government with respects of
them agreeing with the intent of the superannuation system for providing income within retirement
instead of relying entirely on the age pension. However, that isn t the only objective of the
superannuation system, the objectives branch off into multiple subsidiary objectives such as

David Hume On Liberty Chapter 2
In chapter 2 of On Liberty, Mill concludes that people s opinions should not be silenced as long
as it sticks to fair discussion. If a person will subject their opinions to other s criticism of it, then
they should not be silenced. Hume makes three important points throughout this chapter of his
book. First, Hume argues that people are hurt by the silencing of opinions. Not only the person
who is silenced, but also the person who silenced them. He states that people should be able to hear
every opinion so that they can decide for themselves how they feel about it. He finds four criticisms
of this argument which include: (a) even though people may be wrong they still have a right to
conscientious conviction, (b) a government has the duty

portal to widespread tourism throughout the world. Back in the 1930 s people began to fly
commercially to get to their destination (Smith). Taking planes was faster than boats and still is
today and is currently used by many today such as military and regular citizens. Next the Wright

people are gonna be paying to ship and trade things across land and water. Lastly the Wright
Brothers impacted trade and commerce with the airplane. People are able to get ahold of things

sites such as Amazon and they are usually shipped by plane if they are overseas. All these things
that the Wright Brothers have done have impacted many countries and created global diaspora.
The Wright Brother s lasting influence has been their creation of the first working airplane

Justice And Retributive Justice
Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, life for a life . If someone commits a wrong then they must be
punished, they must be punished with a wrong that is equal to the harm that they have caused. This
is retributive justice. Retribution is the punishment that has been given to someone for a wrongful
or criminal act. Retributive justice is the type of justice that considers punishmentas the best way to
respond to the wrongful or criminal act that has been committed. Based on ethical belief, the
punishment must fit the crimein order to achieve a fair and equal response. The code of Hammurabi
is a Babylonian law code that dates back to 1772 BC. In this code, one of the key laws is: If a man

This is thought to create fairness as there has been a repayment for the wrong that has been
caused. In society, many people believe that is unfair for a person to do something wrong and not
be appropriately punished for it, that it is important for the person to pay in full for the wrongful
act they committed. The idea is that if someone does something that is wrong and/or hurtful they
should not get away with it. Instead they should have to suffer as they made others suffer.
According to proponents of retributive justice, if a person steals from another, it is only fair that
that person has something stolen from them. If a person takes the life of another, then it is only
fair that that person as their life taken too. If a person who has committed a wrongful act and is not
punished fairly, an imbalance in society is created. This may lead to the victim not feeling as
though they have gained

Probabilistic Categorization Learning
The Effects of Video Games on Probabilistic Categorization Learning: To reinforce the findings of
Emma Stanmore, Sabrina Schenk decides to conduct her own form of research on the effects of
video games on cognition. According to Schenk, studies show that playing video games is
connected to definite cognitive benefits such as probabilistic classification. Probabilistic
classification primarily requires a coordinated interaction between two types of long term memory:
declarative and nondeclarative memory; otherwise referred to as explicit and implicit memory
(Schenk 2017). Declarative memory is commonly known to be the storage of factual information,
while nondeclarative memory refers to the unconscious memory of certain skills. Additionally,
declarative memory is primarily controlled by the hippocampus while nondeclarative memory is
mediated by the basal ganglia (Schenk 2017) The coordinated utilization of both memory
components allows for better prediction of unknown outcomes. The unanswered question remains:

Daubert Standard Research Paper
Across the United States it has been debated, for several years, which standard should be utilized
in the court system: the Frye standard or the Daubert standard. It basically comes down to
whether expert testimony should be presented in court based on wide acceptance or scientific
proof. Both articles explained the Daubert standard as basically a stricter Frye standard, which
could also be gathered from their definitions. It is due to the stricter and more outlined
restrictions that the Daubert standard should be utilized in the Florida court system. The
Daubert standard bases its criteria for expert testimony on proven scientific fact and reliability.
Just because an idea is widely accepted, does not necessarily mean that the idea is true. The best
example of this would be that historically the Earth was believed to be flat. As science,
technology, and understanding advanced, this theory was discovered to not hold true. In a court
of a law, a mistake like this could be the difference between someone s life and death. The
Simplified Guide to Forensic Evidence Admissibility and Expert Witnesses article discussed the
polygraph, which even by Frye standard was not admissible in court. Today, many attorneys would

reliable principle, and whether the data was obtained reliably. The Daubert standard can be

We center on the first world perspective. Feelings of invulnerability lead to fantasy of
omnipotence (9). Conflation of exploration and exoneration leads to the conception of
responsibility. This includes isolating the event and conceptualizing rationality. Responsibility is
the juncture of being acted on and acting. This causes the response. There is some basis of
political community. Violence and vulnerability can be led to the exploitation of the ties we have
with one another (27). Butler wants to say that we are always vulnerable. Butler wants to
complicate the picture of autonomy. The narrative of autonomy leads to violence and stratification
which in turn leads to dehumanization and derealation. We need to become aware of this process
to understand our relationships. When we mention the narrative of autonomy we are speaking
about the body. The body is both a site of private and public spheres. Most people see the body as
only being in the private sphere but in reality, the body is constantly being regulated an example
being like what clothes are appropriate to wear to different occasions. Butler wants to relate this to
the relationships we have with legitimate power. Butler uses Focult s idea of sovereignty and
governmentality. Sovereignty is seen as representative. It is an individualized, concentrated power
that involves decision making. Governmentality on the other hand revolves around the process of
law.

Essay on Media and Violence
Introduction
In this essay I will be analysing whether less visual violence within the media would mean less
violence on the streets. Firstly, I will be questioning whether there is a connection between the
viewing of media violence and actual acting upon it. To do this I will analyse the usefulness of the
different methods used to approach such as complex issue. To illustrate this I will use examples of
different media forms that seem to have been a catalyst for acts of violence. I will then attempt to
come to a conclusion on whether less media violence could mean less acts of violence. Define

This post modern society can either have a positive affect or a negative one especially as
technology and the media have become more advanced and widespread, for example technology
can be used to cure diseases as well as allow terrorist attacks to occur. Postmodernist fear that the
media will become so overpowering a dominant that it will create hyper reality whereby the
distinctions between image and reality no longer exist (Jewkes, 2004: 26)
Research
Some argue that watching violence on screen may have a negative effect on the individual and
may lead to that individual imitating that act. Many researchers especially psychologist have
carried out studies attempting to prove that there is a correlation between the two commonly
using experiments with the use of observations (Boyle, 2005). The most common way that
researchers go about answering the question is by selecting a group of children, making them
watch something which has a level of violence and analyses the way the children react to it after
they have watched it (Bandura et al, 1963). There are many flaws when conducting such as study,

Similarities Between Inspector Goole And Birling
The mystery and morality play, An Inspector Calls , was constructed by Priestley to expose to
the public the problems in society and Capitalism. He uses Inspector Goole and Mr. Birling, two
very opposing characters in personality and political views, to help illustrate his ideas. This is
mainly highlighted by the idea of the Inspector being the protagonist and Birling as the antagonist.
Inspector Goole and Birling both represent the two major political parties present in 1912, when it
was set (Socialism and Capitalism). Mr. Birling gains more in his business and society due to
Capitalism, so is unable to accept community and all that nonsense . This illustrates Birling s belief
that each person should only care about their friends and family.

Graffiti Is Art Not Vandalism
Graffiti Is Art Not Vandalism Graffiti can be found everywhere and anywhere. It is a way for
people to express themselves and be creative in a public manner. It shows how passionate and
talented they can be when it comes to drawing or tagging and have it displayed as a piece of art for
everyone to see. Graffitigoes way back to the ancient times and is now very well known in the
modern days which makes more and more people interested and fascinated by them. It can be
used in different types of ways. Many artists can either spray paint, carve, paste, or stencil them
on a surface. From how we see them today they are usually images of random cartoons, big
bubbly letters, vintage black and whites or inspirational quotes. Virtually anything colorful or
not and big that can be easily spotted. Graffiti is more superior to be known as art than vandalism
because it is a self expressing act. People need to be open minded about the images they see and
look at the message behind it or else they will immediately criticize and say it is vandalizing
property. It is a form of art not a crime. Going out of their way to trespass and damage property like
fences, road barriers, or warning signs is considered a crime. Art wise, it attracts large crowds and
shocks a few. It is a way to build a creative imagination and to be spontaneous. It really depends on
how people look and feel about it. But there are
artists that make street art which means that they are

You Can Not Go Through Life Without Having A List Of Rules
You can not go through life without having a list of rules. I hope to grow up and become a parent
myself and one thing that I hope to teach my children one day is that they need to work their
hardest until they succeed and that they need to learn from their failures. One quote that I really
like is from Thomas Edisonwho said, I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways not to build
a lightbulb. What I take from this quote is that life doesn t end after you fail, you needto take that
failure and expound on it and learn from it. I live by a lot of rules, I believe obeying rules is hard
work but if I obey them I will get a lot of things in return and that s what I hope my kids take away
from life and my rules, is that if you do something hard you ll get something great in return.
In my freshman year I was nominated to be the team captain of my baseball team and that night
I was really nervous because I didn t think I was the right person for the job because I am a quiet
kid and I just go to baseball to do two things, win and get better. I also get angry at people when
they mess up but I do usually keep it to myself. I was also really nervous when I was up to hit
because I didn t want to get hit by the ball. So I didn t really know how to be a team leader. That
night I was sitting around table eating dinner when I started talking about what I should do. My
dad gave me this tip that when I m up to bat say to myself, I can hit the ball, I can hit the ball. This

Physics of Color Vision and Color Blindness Essay
What is Color?
To understand what color is, we first need to understand what light is. Light, as perceived by
humans, is simply electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths between roughly 380 nm and 740
nm. Wavelengths below 380 nm and above 740 nm cannot be seem by the human eye.
Electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength just below 380 nm is known as ultraviolet radiation.
Electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength just above 740 nm is known as infrared radiation. The
sun, black lights and fluorescent lamps are all sources of ultraviolet light. Heat is a source of
infrared radiation, which is how thermal vision works.
Electromagnetic radiation between the wavelengths of 380 nm and 740 nm constitute light and the

Based on our current knowledge, there is no observable physical explanation (in our brains or
elsewhere) as to how a 650 nm ray of light becomes red . As it stands, there s no proof that one
day you couldn t wake up with your visible color spectrum flipped. For more information on the
debate between physics and psychological interpretation of sensory experiences, search for the
term qualia . Now back to the physics (this is a physics webpage after all)...
The point is, color is a purely subjective experience that would not exist without eyes to see it. We
can only understand color based on how we see color, even though other animals can see it
differently. The human eye contains both rod cells and cone cells to interpret light. Rod cells
interpret lower levels of light than cone cells; they also do not see color. In light environments,
cone cells become activated and replace the rod cells as the primary source of visual information.
Cone cells are the photoreceptors used to discriminate color.
The human eye contains three different types of cone cells which interpret their own ranges of
electromagnetic wavelengths. These three cone cells are often oversimplified as the blue, green
and red cone cells when, in fact, they each cover a range of colors. Each cone cell s sensitivity to
light is distributed as a bell curve over a range of wavelengths. The three cone cells

The And Vocation Questionnaire For College Students
Introduction How is a calling (the search for or the presence of) mediated by student reported
measures such as, academic satisfaction, withdrawal deliberation, and major commitment
among college students? To explore the research questions this review will use the Calling and
Vocation Questionnaire (CVQ; Dik, Eldridge, Steger, Duffy, 2012) to measure calling.
Measurement of the variable of academic satisfaction will be facilitated by a seven item
measure developed by Lent, et al. (2005). Withdrawal deliberation measures will be adapted
from Pleskac, et al. (2009). The variable of major commitment will be measure through the
academic major satisfaction survey (Nauta, 2007). Review of Instrument The CVQ is a 24 item,
self report measure that assesses an individual s belief that they have a calling, and/or the
individual is searching for a calling (Dik, et al., 2012). The instrument s purpose as described by
its authors is to assess calling in the domain of work (Dik, et al., 2012, pg. 243). The CVQ
includes three subscales that relate to the search for a calling (Search Transcendent Summons,
Search Purposeful Work, and Search Prosocial Orientation) and three subscales that relate to the
presence of a calling (Presence Transcendent Summons, Presence Purposeful Work, and Presence
Prosocial Orientation). The items are endorsed by the test taker on a Likert style scale of one to
four, one being Not at all true of me and four being Absolutely true of me . Each of the

Dr. Bundy, The Murderer, Rapist And Necrophilia Of Many...
Introduction
Theodore Robert Cowell, also known as Ted Bundy, was a murderer, rapist and necrophilia of
many young women between 1974 and 1978. Bundy murdered young women all over the United
States, including Washington, Utah, Oregon, Colorado and Florida. He was a suspect in over thirty
six murders and allegedly murdered many more. (2015, www.twistedminds.com). Fortunately,
forensic science played a key role in the conviction of several murders.
The murders
On the morning of January 4, 1974, Bundy entered the home of an 18 year old female University
of Washington student, Joni Lenz. Bundy used a crow bar and bludgeoned her with it while she
was sleeping. He also removed a rod from her headboard and sexually abused her with it. ... Show

Police from the area now had a description of Bundy and his vehicle. His description and sketch
were plastered on the news and in newspapers around the area. The police received calls from his
ex coworker Ann Rule, his girlfriend, and a UW professor claiming that Bundy could be the
suspect. However, the police didn t accept that Bundy could be the suspect given the fact that he
was a clean cut law student . (2015, www.clarkprosecutor.org). In September of 1974, the two
victims remains were discovered off of the interstate near Issaquah.
Over the next four years, Bundy continued on this murder spree, targeting young women who had
dark shoulder length (or longer) hair, parted in the middle. They all resembled Stephanie, the love
of his life that he could never have . (2015, www.twistedminds.com). While he attended law school,
he would kill more women in Colorado and Utah.
In Murray, Utah, on 8 November 1974, Bundy posed as Officer Rosewood of the Murray Police
Department. He approached a woman named Carol DaRonch, at a local mall, telling her to come
with him because someone tried to break into her car. (2015, www.clarkprosecutor.org). She got
into his car, but refused to buckle her seatbelt. Bundy handcuff her, but DaRonch struggled and was
able to escape.
Finally, Bundy was arrested in Salt Lake City, Utah under suspicion of burglary. (2015,

Thomas Moore Inward Discipline
Inward Disciplines The book starts with the classic meditation. Meditation is a discipline that I
try to engage in most of the time. I realize over time there are methods of meditating. I had to
learn how to quiet the noise in my head to listen to God. There are so many disturbances in the
world that you have to be willing to shutdown all outside interference to allow God to speak to
us. The best part about meditating you can meditate anywhere. This classic that the authors give
narratives about are powerful to me because it is personal. God has given each one of us freedom
of conscience to go inside ourselves where he can meet and commune with every person who
privately opens up to him. Thomas Moore gives a godly prayer reverencing

Personal Narrative Reflection
My third visit to Mrs. Casanova s class has thus far been my most productive, in terms of
applying something I have learned both from this class and UCF in general. With the end of the
middle of the second nine weeks rapidly approaching so too are classroom summative
assignments. During my visit on the twentieth I was able to both see the test creation process in a
PLC and participate in the creation of some questions. Two of the three teacher I have been able to
spend time with in the classroom, the first being in internship and the second, Mrs. Casanova with
service learning. Both teachers employ direct instruction as their primary means of conveying
information, with Mrs. Casanova using it more than the honors and AP teachers. However, within
the PLC the test questions were being created for all classes, rather than having separate questions
for AP, honors, and regular classes, with the only difference being the written response questions
being more challenging in upper classes. Due to this, content evidence was very important,
especially for the upper classes, as they technically would be getting the same test as a regular.
Beyond this however, the instruction leading up to the test also had to be evaluated as the questions
were made with AP in mind. According to the book, content evidence connects to state standards
and what the students need to know based off this, which should be reflected within the instruction
(pg. 396).
One thing UCF does a great job of is

The Importance Of Alcohol Advertisements
In the world of media, companies love to brand their products through advertisements. Companies
use radio broadcasts, billboards, television and in apps online. One of the biggest industries in
Australia and in Brisbane, Queensland is Alcohol. The most common way alcohol is advertised is
through television and a big danger is that anyone can see this advertisement. This often leaves
lasting impressions on people. It often hard to avoid seeing these advertisements being that they
are at train stations, on busses, at gas stations, at local pubs, and all over radio and television.
Australians love cracking a cold one, it has become a part of the Australian culture for more than a
decade now. Alcoholadvertisements have become as popular as throwing shrimp on the barbie.
Alcohol advertisements need to be banned in Australia because of the increasing numbers in
underage drinking alcohol related diseases and deaths.
Brisbane needs to ban the promotion of alcohol advertisements because of the increasing number in
underage drinking. Underage drinking has become a serious dilemma in Brisbane over the past
decade. Teens as young as 13 years old are getting their hands on alcohol and are abusing it. This
abuse to young teens is detrimental to them physically, they can have serious physical effects
ranging from disruption of physical growth, trauma to the brain or death. Alcohol consumption
underage not only harms them physically but also causes changes in behaviour. Teens endure a

  • 2. America Must Invest in Energy Efficiency Essays America Must Invest in Energy Efficiency In recent years our country has had many debates over what must be done to lessen the amount of oil that our country consumes. It is well known that we need to make some type of change to help not only the environment, but also lessen our reliance on imported oil. President Bush recently announced his new plan that could someday greatly reduce that amount of oil that Americans use by replacing oil with hydrogen fuel cells. Although this plan is a step in the right direction, it is not the answer. There are far too many downsides that could actually hurt our country in the long run. One problem is that the plan proposed by Bush will take far too long before any changes will be seen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... . If cars were required to run on 55 miles per gallon, the U.S. would save about five million barrels per day. This alone is about seven times the amount of oil that was imported from Iraq alone last year (Kennedy 11). All major auto companies can already make cars that run on seventy miles per gallon; meaning that Clinton s goal was nearly reached. However, because funding is being cut by the new plan, these cars will most likely never be available in the large market. We do need to someday totally end our reliance on oil, especially in cars, but why stop funding a plan that would have an immediate effect? Money is simply being wasted due to the fact that millions of dollars were spent on a plan that is being ended because funding is suddenly being spent on new areas of research. We need to continue funding Clinton s plan even if we do start more research in hydrogen fuel cells. A second major problem with the plan is not easy to see at first. You must look much closer at what types of research is being done. There are two ways that hydrogen fuel cells can be made. One is by a reaction with oxygen. These cells are about 70% efficient and the only emissions are water vapor. The second way it by using oil or coal to make the cells. These cells are about 33% efficient and release harmful emissions into the atmosphere (Abelson 1469). I feel that we should fund research into using oxygen as opposed to fossil fuels when making hydrogen ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Adaptive Radiation And Species Diversification Adaptive Radiation and Species Diversification Through a common ancestor, species diverge into new populations which eventually adapt to their new environments and evolve to become their own sub species and then distinct species. This occurs through the process of adaptive radiation. The population of an ancestor species radiates outwards to different ecological niches. From there, these now separate populations adapt to their new habitats and resources in isolation. This gives them opportunity to evolve and become their own species based off of genetic changes that make them most fit for their new environments. Examples of these kinds of adaptations derive from geographic isolation from other species, reduction of gene flow among the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From there, the newly inhabited populations performed the process of specialization in which they adapted to their individual resources and environments. This differentiated the populations and confirmed the process of speciation as they became their own species in isolation. Specialization can be found in the different beaks of the finch species. The different sizes and shapes of the beaks are a result of the different sizes and shapes of the seeds that the populations feed on in their own niches. For example, bigger and bulkier beaks can help crack open harder seeds, whereas smaller beaks can be more successful in obtaining smaller seeds. And longer and thinner beaks can help reach into flowers, whereas medium sized can be more successful in obtaining insects. Because of this separation in characteristics, these different finches do not continue to breed with each other, resulting in fully separated species with their own traits. The specialization found between and within the species is a direct result of the geographic isolation that occurs from adaptive radiation. Gene flow is the movement of genes among populations that ultimately reduces differences within and between species. This process keeps populations genetically similar, but when restrictions on gene flow are present, separation and speciation are able to occur. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The second bullet entered her skull and fragmented into pieces in her brain. Friedrich had been employed by Dennis Meggyesy and was a frequent visitor to the home. The three Meggyesy children called him Uncle John. Although he volunteered during his phone call some information about how he came to find her dead, he claimed to have amnesia and no memory of finding the body or anything related to the shooting when investigators attempted to question him at the scene. At the time, Dennis and the three children were in Georgia, on their way back from a trip to Disney World. Dennis, who learned of his wife s grizzly death when his phone call home was answered by the sheriff, related to the children that their mother was not only dead, but had been murdered. The suspect Five days later, after being interviewed by Prosecutor Thomas White and Capt. Roger Pennell, and handing over his revolver, which was linked ballistically to the bullets recovered from Meggyesy s body, Friedrich was charged with murder. According to court testimony and six pages of notes, written by Meggyesy and found in the kitchen, Friedrich was in a self described unhappy marriage and appeared to be fixated on Meggyesy. • 9. The Role Of Resilience In Adolescents Children and adolescents are resilient. According to McWhirter, McWhirter, McWhirter, and McWhirter (2013), resilience is the capacity to adapt and function successfully despite experiencing chronic stress and adversity (p. 130). Resilience is also the ability to come back from a negative situation and turn the adversity into something positive (Prince Embury, 2015). When adolescents are placed in a stressful or difficult situation, they strive to make the best of it; however, there are some adolescents who struggle to make the best of the situation they are in, which leads to risky behavior. Family factors tend to influence resiliency as well as protective and riskfactors. Family factors that influence resiliency in adolescents is parental... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At risk youth are still capable of getting involved with school and community activities. Some adolescents become involved with art, music, and drama so they can express themselves artistically. Others get involved with sports because of the family like atmosphere and team building exercises. Others become involved with local mentoring organizations like Big Brothers, Big Sisters and church youth groups. All of these activities serve as protective factors for at risk youth, and help adolescents develop resiliency. According to McWhirter et al (2013), the social support networks of the larger community also help to ameliorate the effects of stress on children (p. 131). Adolescents rely on their peers, youth leaders, coaches, and teachers to help them develop resilience. One of the risks of depending on peers to help develop resilience is peer group pressure can be either a very powerful ally or a formidable antagonist, dissuading or encouraging problem behavior (McWhirter et al, 2013, p. 116). As a result, it is imperative for adolescents to choose their friends wisely, especially if they come from a difficult home background. School and community environments help adolescents develop the skills they need to overcome their difficulties (McWhirter et al, 2013, p. 146). Schools and communities also help adolescents develop resiliency because they provide the support they need to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This essay will explore the influence of Reinhardt with particular emphasis on his talent as a guitarist and composer which earned him tremendous respect in the world of jazzand subsequently enhanced his authority in defining the genre. Moreover, this essay will delve into Reinhardt s integral role in the creation of gypsy jazz and how this genre has influenced the development of jazz. Finally, this essay will look at the way Reinhardt has influenced the development of jazz guitar by inspiring other musicians. Whilst in Paris, Reinhardt collaborated with numerous American jazz musicians including saxophonists Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins, and cornetist Rex Stewart. Due to the prevalence of Jazz in America, it could be argued that future generations of jazz guitarists were influenced more by Charles Christian and other American jazz guitarists than Django, however, Reinhardt s influence was transmitted via these musicians with Mary Osborne recalling a concert in Bismark during the late 1930 s when Christian performed a note for note version of Reinhardt s recording of St. Louis Blues .9 This was also the case with Les Paul who learnt Django s solos by listening to his recordings and went on to perform them across America. There are a myriad of other celebrated guitar players who have cited Reinhardt as an inspiration for their music including Wes Montgomery, Chet Atkins, B.B. King, John McLaughlin, Carlos Santana, Vernon Reid, Andres Segovia and guitar legend Jeff Beck who claimed that, after listing through all of his own inspirations, of course, it all started with Django. 10 The influence of Django Reinhardt has also been transmitted through popular culture with Django s music being used in a variety of Woody Allen movies such Sweet and Lowdown and Stardust Memories as well as more mainstream films such as The Matrix, The Aviator and Chocolat. • 12. What Is The Difference Between Ancient Mesopotamia And... Ancient Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt are two of the earliest and greatest civilizations to ever exist. They both show the transition from a Paleolithic society into a settled civilization. Nevertheless, Mesopotamia has been a worldwide centre of awe and amazement . The first written language created by the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamiabecame the first means of of written communication for humankind. The spread of agriculture created a new way of life and evolved man from nomadic hunters into civilized people . Most important of all, the creation of the wheel opened up a new way for transportation to be carried out. Between both civilizations, it ancient Mesopotamia left the greatest impact on posterity. To begin, the Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia introduced the first forms of written language Cuneiform. The beginning of writing was an essential tool that transferred thoughts and speech into text. It was extremely important and allowed for the beginning of record keeping of all sorts. At this point, writing was used only for record keeping, and thus only concrete words(nouns) such as ox , grain and sheep were needed. As society became more complex, the language evolved enabling signs to be used...and eventually abstract thoughts (Newman 44). The world came to know a unique way of expressing thoughts and learned to convey messages through writing. • 13. The Importance Of An Exemplary Person In Confucius The exemplary person (junzi) is someone who is worthy of leadership and respect. To do one s utmost (zhong), observing ritual propriety (li), practicing filial piety (xiao), knowing what is appropriate (yi) and having a deep love of learning (haoxne) are crucial aspect to becoming such a commanding and versatile individual. These qualities, however, do not come easily as the way (dao) requires the types of habits and commitments that the average personwould normally find excessive. Nevertheless, for those did who managed to persevere they found themselves walking the path towards harmony. Although some may have achieved harmony, the questions must be asked: how and why did these seemingly arbitrary ideas work? How does loving to learn and doing ones duty make a person exemplary? For Confuciusthis was no easy task to explain. Compounding the issue further is that many may find contradictions within the Analects itself. Despite this, these qualities do promote the type of virtues that, in mind of Confucius at least, can create what some many consider to be an exemplary person. Doing one s utmost is something many may think comes naturally. This direct approach may seem easy on the surface, nonetheless, for Confucius doing ones utmost requires a much more nuanced approach. It is not enough for the exemplary person to do their best, but they must also aim to help their peers, community and superiors. When ritual propriety is observed and the exemplary person is ... • 14. Lily s Choice in The House of Mirth Essays Lily s Choice in The House of Mirth Near the beginning of The House of Mirth, Wharton establishes that Lily would not indeed have cared to marry a man who was merely rich: she was secretly ashamed of her mothers crude passion for money (38). Lily, like the affluent world she loves, has a strange relationship with money. She needs money to buy the type of life she has been raised to live, and her relative poverty makes her situation precarious. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lily Bart has to die because she is completely incapable of adapting to this world of direct transactions, and in the end the only two paths she sees both lie firmly in that realm. First, a distinction must be made between direct and indirect transaction. Lily can happily live in a world where wealth circulates obliquely and freely. When Lily stays as a guest at Bellomont eating fine food at her hosts expense, she is not receiving payment for goods or services. Instead, her charm has earned her the benefits of friendship with the rich. Lily is not exactly being paid to be charming; instead, being charming attracts the generous hospitality and entertainment of wealthy friends. The distinction between this type of benefit and direct compensation is enormous. When the reader encounters Lily in Chapter Ten of Book Two, Lily has fled from the world of Norma Hatch to the milliners shop and it was an offer of direct reward that made it necessary for Lily to escape. Wharton writes, The sense of being involved in a transaction she would not have cared to examine too closely had soon afterward defined itself in the light of a hint from Mr. Stancy that if she saw them through, she would have no reason to be sorry (293 3). Lily has no qualms about living as a guest of her rich friends, but the idea of selling her charm and becoming a sort of social mercenary holds no appeal for her: The implication that such loyalty would meet with a direct ... Although it can be argued that Trudeau s behavior was outlandish and informal at times, it could be considered charismatic, however, his behavior to politics was superior. He was inspired to change Canadaand make it a better place to live. He did so by implying the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, multiculturalism, and using laws to make Canada a better place. It also promotes respect for peoples distinct cultural identity. Implying multiculturalism to Canada was one of Trudeau s greatest accomplishments. Pierre Trudeau was a leader who not only brought change by bringing new laws to Canada, but he changed the way people viewed other laws. Trudeau listened to the majority, but also protected the rights of the minority which demonstrates he is a strong leader. He once said Canada will be a strong country when Canadians of all provinces feel at home in all parts of the country, and when they feel that all Canada belongs to them. By doing this, he completely changed the view of the WMA. • 16. Academic Dishonesty At Todays Education System Academic Dishonesty in Todays Education System One of the greatest concerns in schools is academic dishonesty. Over time cheating has increased drastically for many reasons. As a result of this, institutions have had to enforce strict rules and create honor codes to protect the integrity of their students. Although academic dishonesty has several negative effects, students continue to cheat for reasons such as: unclear guidelines, pressure, being overworked, and lack of effort. Academic dishonesty takes numerous forms. It can vary from plagiarism to professional misconduct. Due to this, the definition of what academic dishonesty is has become blurred for not only students, but teachers as well. More often than not, students are not aware that what they are doing qualifies as cheating. Colleges and universities do a poor job of educating their students and instructors on what qualifies as cheating. Although most schools have honor codes in place to protect their students integrity, the guidelines can lack clear boundaries and consistency. These guidelines can also lack how instructors are to enforce these rules, leaving them without a clear process to follow. This can lead to many accidental violations of the honor codes. It is important institutions regularly reinforce the principles of academic dishonesty, so that students are aware and can avoid such situations. This cause is less apparent than others, but transpires frequently in schools everywhere. Grades rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

On the contrary, we are invited to understand and sympathize. But there is a limit to sympathy. For though he lives among us, he not one of us (Coetzee, 2000: 33). The afore stated quote from the novel Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee, is used when discussing a poem by Lord ByronLara in the novel. Yet it is directly applicable to the protagonist, David Lurie. Coetzee appeals to the readers to not criticise Lurie too harshly for his actions and to find it in their heart to sympathise with him. Lurie can therefore be viewed as a Byronic hero. As a result of his bad choices, made even worse by his refusal to admit guilt, he leaves his urban existence for the rustic countryside. Once there he takes up residence with his daughter Lucy and even gets a job as an assistant to euthanize dogs at the local animal shelter. The feature of the Byronic hero that is the capability of deep and strong affection (Beatty, 2008) is seen in Lurie in his dealings with Lucy. Nevertheless the single most important aspect that makes David a Byronic hero is the fact that there are so many similarities between the life of Lurie and Lord Byron himself. Lurie says: I was not myself. I was no longer a fifty year old divorcГ© at a loose end. I became a servant of Eros (Coetzee, 2000:52). Byron s personality and actions could be seen as driven by Eros, so Lurie says he is driven by impulse, as already mentioned in this essay. Lastly one can surely conclude that David Lurie shows all signs of being a Byronic hero, most definitely a reflection of Lord Byron himself. Lord Byron once wrote; What is the worst of woes that wait on age? What stamps the wrinkle deeper on the brow? To view each loved one blotted from life s page, and be alone on earth, as I am now. Similarly Lurie comes to the realisation that he is now old and should resign himself to a quiet life without a string of young woman to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since ancient times, it was considered natural for women to give birth (to boys, if possible) and take care of children and the household. Women were often considered unqualified for jobs that required physical strength. Men, on the other hand were the breadwinner of the family. He made sure to provide his family with the basic needs, such as food, clothing, protection and shelter. In society, the media is a powerful socializing agent for young children. When children watch TV they see males act more aggressively than females, and that females are more likely to understand other people s needs and feelings. All of the children shows in the 1991 Saturday morning TV lineup had male lead characters. Even on public TV s Sesame Street , most of the Muppet characters were identified as males. This would seem to be the pinnacle weapon for a terrorist group to acquire and would cause mass destruction and devastation if detonated, especially in a congested civilian area. Nuclear bombs have been used twice in human history, both of which were dropped on Japan during World War II. Hiroshimaand Nagasaki lost an estimated 110,000 people due to the blast alone and an unknown number of individuals were killed or affected in some way in the aftermath from fires and radiation (Cole 2006). If a similar weapon would be detonated today over a place such as New York City, the affects would be surreal. Netflix would be the best fit as their catalog has a wider range of choices and are more experimental in their stories than typical mainstream media. Their budget is also higher which I believe would be an added benefit for a show like this that would be shooting on location more so than on a soundstage, or at least for the city exteriors. The form of the show would not be a typical sitcom camera set up but more like how Netflix shoots Master of None (2015 present) or Unbreakable: Kimmy Schmidt (2015 present). I feel like the camera would be less static and more cinematic. There would be longer tracking shots to give the audience a sense of being there with these characters. The story is meant to be intimate and that they are there with Julianna, going through these struggles life throws at her. A typically, sitcom set feels as though the audience is looking into the characters lives versus being immersed into the story itself. The eight to thirteen episodes seems like a better fit for this type of a comedy as well. If someone commits a wrong then they must be punished, they must be punished with a wrong that is equal to the harm that they have caused. This is retributive justice. Retribution is the punishment that has been given to someone for a wrongful or criminal act. Retributive justice is the type of justice that considers punishmentas the best way to respond to the wrongful or criminal act that has been committed. Based on ethical belief, the punishment must fit the crimein order to achieve a fair and equal response. The code of Hammurabi is a Babylonian law code that dates back to 1772 BC. In society, many people believe that is unfair for a person to do something wrong and not be appropriately punished for it, that it is important for the person to pay in full for the wrongful act they committed. The idea is that if someone does something that is wrong and/or hurtful they should not get away with it. Instead they should have to suffer as they made others suffer. According to proponents of retributive justice, if a person steals from another, it is only fair that that person has something stolen from them. If a person takes the life of another, then it is only fair that that person as their life taken too. • 37. Probabilistic Categorization Learning The Effects of Video Games on Probabilistic Categorization Learning: To reinforce the findings of Emma Stanmore, Sabrina Schenk decides to conduct her own form of research on the effects of video games on cognition. According to Schenk, studies show that playing video games is connected to definite cognitive benefits such as probabilistic classification. Probabilistic classification primarily requires a coordinated interaction between two types of long term memory: declarative and nondeclarative memory; otherwise referred to as explicit and implicit memory (Schenk 2017). Declarative memory is commonly known to be the storage of factual information, while nondeclarative memory refers to the unconscious memory of certain skills. Additionally, declarative memory is primarily controlled by the hippocampus while nondeclarative memory is mediated by the basal ganglia (Schenk 2017) The coordinated utilization of both memory components allows for better prediction of unknown outcomes. • 40. Daubert Standard Research Paper Across the United States it has been debated, for several years, which standard should be utilized in the court system: the Frye standard or the Daubert standard. It basically comes down to whether expert testimony should be presented in court based on wide acceptance or scientific proof. Both articles explained the Daubert standard as basically a stricter Frye standard, which could also be gathered from their definitions. It is due to the stricter and more outlined restrictions that the Daubert standard should be utilized in the Florida court system. The Daubert standard bases its criteria for expert testimony on proven scientific fact and reliability. Just because an idea is widely accepted, does not necessarily mean that the idea is true. The best example of this would be that historically the Earth was believed to be flat. As science, technology, and understanding advanced, this theory was discovered to not hold true. In a court of a law, a mistake like this could be the difference between someone s life and death. The Simplified Guide to Forensic Evidence Admissibility and Expert Witnesses article discussed the polygraph, which even by Frye standard was not admissible in court. Violence and vulnerability can be led to the exploitation of the ties we have with one another (27). Butler wants to say that we are always vulnerable. Butler wants to complicate the picture of autonomy. The narrative of autonomy leads to violence and stratification which in turn leads to dehumanization and derealation. We need to become aware of this process to understand our relationships. When we mention the narrative of autonomy we are speaking about the body. The body is both a site of private and public spheres. Most people see the body as only being in the private sphere but in reality, the body is constantly being regulated an example being like what clothes are appropriate to wear to different occasions. Butler wants to relate this to the relationships we have with legitimate power. Butler uses Focult s idea of sovereignty and governmentality. Sovereignty is seen as representative. It is an individualized, concentrated power that involves decision making. Governmentality on the other hand revolves around the process of law. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To illustrate this I will use examples of different media forms that seem to have been a catalyst for acts of violence. Postmodernist fear that the media will become so overpowering a dominant that it will create hyper reality whereby the distinctions between image and reality no longer exist (Jewkes, 2004: 26) Research Some argue that watching violence on screen may have a negative effect on the individual and may lead to that individual imitating that act. Many researchers especially psychologist have carried out studies attempting to prove that there is a correlation between the two commonly using experiments with the use of observations (Boyle, 2005). The most common way that researchers go about answering the question is by selecting a group of children, making them watch something which has a level of violence and analyses the way the children react to it after they have watched it (Bandura et al, 1963). There are many flaws when conducting such as study, one of them being that the study highly lacks in reliability. Rod cells interpret lower levels of light than cone cells; they also do not see color. In light environments, cone cells become activated and replace the rod cells as the primary source of visual information. Cone cells are the photoreceptors used to discriminate color. The human eye contains three different types of cone cells which interpret their own ranges of electromagnetic wavelengths. These three cone cells are often oversimplified as the blue, green and red cone cells when, in fact, they each cover a range of colors.
