Actuality In Tim OBrien s The Things They Carried
In Tim O Brien s shocking war story, The Things They Carried , the author does a few things that
would be considered odd in the modern world of literature, these include telling the readers
beforehand whether or not the story will have a happy/ tragic ending, and the factuality. His habit of
revealing the result of the story beforehand, is much like the prologue of Shakespeare s play, Romeo
and Juliet. Shakespeare states, Is now the two hours traffic of our stage; The which, if you with patient
ears attend, What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend (p. 7). This practice has been executed
for centuries, and has the reader focus more on the story details to see how everything will play out,
instead of getting wrapped up in how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The purpose of this quote within the story, is to remind readers of the emotional journey and how war
can affect people, years after it s all over these men won t be thinking of whether their friends died on
a Wednesday or a Thursday, because it won t matter. Their friend will still be gone. Personally, I find
his random tidbits of what is factual and what is O Brien s imagination to be annoying and pointless,
because the only people who could know the truth would be the people who lived it. As a reader, it d
be wise if he were to just write the stories and let his audience make up their own minds about what
they read; that s what defines a story. He states, War is hell, but that s not the half of it, because war is
also mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair
and longing and love. War is nasty; war is fun. War is thrilling; war is drudgery. War makes you a
man; war makes you dead. (Pg. 76). This excerpt from the text meant more to me than majority of this
novel whether it fits his definition of a true war story , because it s the most honest depiction I ve read
in awhile. When it comes down to it, it isn t about the factuality or even the small details, a true story
is based on the way it made the reader feel.

Local and Regional Forces
Section B. Is local diversity a product of regional forces, local forces, or both, and how might we
know? In ecology, the change in species diversity across space and time is one of the oldest studied
subjects, however the underlying causes of many diversity patterns is under much debate (Field et al.
2001; MacArthur, 1972; Rosenzweig, 1995). How does diversity arise (Erwin 1991)? How is diversity
distributed in space (Dean et al. 1997, Fonseca et al. 2000)? And how is diversity maintained (Lande,
1988)? Are three fundamental questions that ecologist look to answer. Early studies focused around
the role of competition in determining diversity at local scales, today however it is emphasized that
many factors on top of competition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second type of manipulation varies the isolation of regional areas from a species source region
and thus the species pools for their embedded communities which is represented in a marine study
where reef environments are associated with coral species assemblages (Cornell et al. 2004; 2008).
Five regions with different diversities at three local scales along a longitudinal gradient from
Indonesian archipelago, where species richness peaks at 600+ sp., to the French Polynesia, with only a
peak of 130 (Cornell et al. 2004). The eastward decline in richness is explained by declining area of
shallow water habitat within each region (Bellwood et al. 2005) partnered with isolation from the
Indonesian diversity hotspot due to distance (Cornell amp; Karlson, 1998) and westward flowing
currents (Connolly et al. 2003) suggesting regional influence on species diversity. Slopes of
regressions of log LSR on log RSR were linear suggesting local assemblages are again open to
enrichment from regional species pool (Cornell et al. 2008). Following on from this, substantial
literature has sought to document what has come to be termed the local regional richness relationship

Chicago s Chinatown Case Study
Improving Open Space of Chicago s Chinatown Open space serves recreational areas for residents and
helps to enhance the environmental and aesthetic quality of neighborhoods. National Recreation and
Park Association (NRPA) indicates that the typical park and recreation agency has 9.6 acres of
parkland for per 1,000 residents and even the lower quartile of the rate is still 4.6. NPPA also
recommend 4 acres per 1,000 as a standard. However, the Chinatown only has 2.5 acres of park space
per 1,000 residents, which is much lower than the typical and recommended standard. Additionally,
there is no City owned vacant lots available within the community. The Chinatown has two parks, the

Teenage Pregnancy At A Young Age
In order for a child to grow and prosper, a stable environment should be in place. Without a stable
environment, it can cause that child to act out and chaos will be a result of that. During teenage years,
kids will often experiment with the opposite sex due to curiosity and things they are learning from
their peers. Teenage pregnancy has many outside influences besides the individual themselves, one
being the media. The teen s sex education level can explain a lot about the knowledge they have on the
topic. Pregnancy at a young age is becoming more prevalent for more reasons than one.
Teen pregnancy rates have seemed to be increasing remarkably in the United States, as oppose to
westernized countries. Influences linked to affecting teen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A trend of early marriage and parenthood was very popular amongst the middle class during the
1900s. In the 1900s, only 1/3 of females had their first child before twenty years old. Researchers have
said that this put an immense amount of pressure on teen girls about having to be married if they were
pregnant, so this led to many young couples getting married at age twenty or younger. Today, statistics
show 80% of teen pregnancies are reported unintended. That s quite a difference.
The epidemic of teens becoming pregnant ends up hurting the young women in more ways than one.
Unprotected sex is beginning to occur more frequently. Most teens understand the risks and
consequences of engaging in sexual behaviors at such a young age; however, they don t seem to take
any precautions to prevent pregnancy from occurring. Teens often want to experiment when they see
their peers, and people they look up to, doing such acts.
In these circumstances, the media is to blame. The television airs shows such as Teen Mom and 16 and
Pregnant which are supposed to prevent teens from making the same mistakes as some of the young
girls featured on the shows. 16 and Pregnant shows the reality and struggle all these teens encounter
while being pregnant, as well as after giving birth. Teen Mom , however, shows these young girls lives
caring for their baby 24/7, while finishing school or working full time. You would think

Palestine Water Conflict Essay
The Palestine and Michigan water crises have narratives to justify both inequality and equality of the
water distribution. In each case, It may seem like one side is more agreeable than the other, however
both sides are able to validate their part. These justifications will be further explained by the narratives
about water that correlate with each event.
To Palestine, water is a human right. Palestinians are not able to access water from the Jordan River
because the proposed construction of a water canal was shut down due to the Israeli occupancy of the
land that it would need to pass through (Friends of the Earth International, 2013). Israel has a much
larger access to water than Palestine and their water pipes lead right through the Palestinian s ... Show

In this case they are specifically talking about clean water. The state government switched their water
supply to the Flint River in order to save money and failed to put water treatments in place.
Throughout the crisis, the concerns or the citizens and professionals were continually set aside. This
resulted in lead polluted water reaching the homes of the civilians and causing many long term health
issues (Ganim, Tran, 2013). The intense effects on the civilians justifies their claim that clean water is
a human right.
The at the time of the water supply switch in Flint, the Michigan government was experiencing
financial difficulties. This is a main reason why the supply was switched to begin with. The
government did not add corrosion control treatments because they weren t able to do so without
updating equipment that was too expensive for the city (Kaffer, 2016). The government was not able
to afford proper water treatment but did not want to completely cut off the water supply to the
civilians. The tests they had conducted showed rising levels of lead but not enough for them to believe
they should deny water supply (Kaffer, 2016). The government s severe financial situation justifies
their actions of water distribution.
The actors in each water crisis situation have a way to justify their decisions. Whether it is equitable or
inequitable outcomes, people seem to make the choices that seem best to

As I gave feedback, I utilized the following skills: I provided feedback in a timely manner
immediately after the skill check so that the account of my observations would be fresh in mind. I
focused on actionable behaviors, rather than things she could not change. When she seemed flustered
and forgetful, I suggested that she take a moment to gather her thoughts, and move slowly through the
process until she felt calm and proficient. I used specific examples and concise language. When I
noticed that the residents shoes were sticking out from under the side of the bed and looked like a trip
hazard, I suggested that the head of the bed would be a safer place to put them.
I also made sure utilize and balance positive and negative feedback by making the quintessential
positive/ negative/ positive sandwich. I was quick to compliment for her comfortable and friendly
demeanor with the resident, then talked about my concerns with giggling and joking around with the
wrong audience, then finished with positive observations on her overall skill and competence. I made
sure to listen afterwards, and she explained her thoughts and realizations about how things had gone
from her perspective, and ended with overall agreement and supportive feelings for each other.
Out of the five basic elements of caring communication, I chose to focus on positiveness and
openness. Positiveness is shown by having self confidence, a positive, secure view of self, and by

Usa Compare And Contrast
As a child, I had always dreamed of traveling around the world and viewing its breathtaking creations.
Through the years I still have this sudden niche for traveling and experiencing new and exciting
things. From Costa Rica to much of the United States I have ventured upon a lot of traveling. Through
the sale of my parents family business I received the opportunity to travel west and help the new
owners grow. After traveling through many of the western states I finally realized how different not
only the terrain was, but culture as well. The state of Utah has many differences from my home state
of Minnesota. Starting from basic terrain Utah is full of endless hills and valleys ranging from
thousands of feet above and below sea level. The four wheeler trails are also abundant and never
ending. A friend and I rented a side by side for a day and drove for hours exploring the wilderness of
Utah. The state run trails are not only for four wheelers, but for hiking as well. Bryce Canyon, the red
rock capital of Utah is definitely a sight to see. I myself was not able to hike the trails of Bryce
Canyon, but if I was given the opportunity I surely would. Towards the entrance of the park the road
cuts through an arch of red rock. This pristine piece of natural art is a cherished tourist attraction

and locations to help enjoy the snowy winter months. As well as Minnesota hunting is enjoyed by
many Utah citizens. I have never gotten the opportunity to go hunting in Utah, but I surely will try in
the near future. Another similarity are the state s capital cities, Salt Lake City and St. Paul, they both
have the state s main airports and many other important structures. Both states have many fun

Denver Department Stores Essay
Denver Department Stores, a Colorado retail store chain, is an entity that was suffering from the
effects of decreased sales volume. Jim Barton, the supervisor of four departments within the main
location in Denver, was struggling with developing a process to improve the store s sales. Barton
identified with the notion that the decrease in sales volume was a simple matter of a slowdown in the
economic landscape, and that the downturn would effect all stores in the retail business. However,
Barton s superior, Mr. Cornwall, the general merchandiser of Denver Department Stores, told Barton
that some stores have experienced a 15% gain in recent sales. Cornwall made it clear that he expected
Barton s segments to have sales equal to the other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. Barton can be defined as a Type B person. As noted previously, he views the sales decline as a
result of just one problem: a bad economy. He is correct that certain economic factors contribute in
consumers choosing certain goods over another, but he allows this view to block his ability to work
through a solution that might increase sales.
As suggested earlier, Denver Department Stores has been experiencing declining sales over a period
of a few months, though the actual reason why this is happening is unknown. A general consensus of
the employees is that there have been fewer customers recently, however, management has placed the
blame on the employees for not working hard enough to make a sale. Initially, as sales began to
decline, employees were somewhat social, and appear to have spent more time speaking with
customers. To remedy the issue of falling sales revenue, management has implemented a tally card
system to encourage the employees to work harder at making sales.
With the tally card system, division of labor was lost. Employees of all levels and all departments
were provided the same goal of making sales a priority. This included not only regular employees, but
also department heads. Putting out and straightening up stock items was pushed aside, leaving the
store and backroom looking cluttered, and provided a more cutthroat work environment for
employees. In addition to the poor division of labor, the tally card system

Abstract
In this essay the reader will be able to identify the legal disputes presented in the Litigation an
Alternative Video. The paper will converse the difference between the traditional litigation system and
the nontraditional forms of Alternative Dispute Resolutions (ADR) which will include the risks that a
company may encounter should they proceed with traditional litigation, when nontraditional ligation is
appropriate to practice to avoid those risk. Alternative disputes presented, such as arbitration,
mediation and min trial are compared to determine which form will be more beneficial to the
company.

The Case Presented
The company Nonlinear Pro files a lawsuit against Quick Text Video for default on lease payments.
The owner assumed that he purchased a trial basis editing system for a few months from Nonlinear
Pro that turns out to be a three month lease for $5,000. Once the system was sent to the company the
employee of Quick Text Video signed the receipt slip without reading it, which the owner later
discovers it represented her signing a three month lease on behalf of the company.
The owner of Quick Text Video refuses to pay the 5,000 for the editing system and claims that the
system is weak and not a very good system. Nonlinear Pro chooses not to back down and file suit
against the company. Quick Text Video reaches out to an attorney for legal representation. During this
process the company must admit to the allegations brought against them and determine which form of
ligation is appropriate to use. It is advised that the company provide written statement of the issues
encountered while using the system. Because the two businesses seem to be small companies the best
form of ADR to use would be mediation or

The Transformation of the Role of Women within Victorian...
The role of women during the Victorian Era has been a prevalent topic over the course of the semester.
Women during that time had limited rights, and the rights they did have were equivalent to that of
children. Domesticity, caring for their husband and children was the focus of their livelihood. As
England continued to grow and industrialize, women became more marginalized, while men continued
to grow into dominant members of society, this is known as the notion of separate spheres. The notion
of separate spheres was not limited to the role women and men had in the home, but extended into the
streets and the workplace. Men were seen as formidable, intellectual, and the governing sex; whereas,
women on the other hand, were disregarded as emotionally unstable, dominated by their sexuality, and
submissive to men s wants and desires. Women were not only given limited rights to the roles they
had in society, but also were not given the right to choose whom they wanted to marry. A majority of
women had no other option but to marry as a way to maintain their livelihood, unless they were
members of high social standings. Additionally, the rights of a woman were again lessened after she
wed. The moment a woman married, she automatically became the property of her husband. The
limited rights she had before were stripped away: her property, identity, and value ceased to exist the
moment she became the helpmate to a man. The ideology of the role women played did not

Portrayal Of Women In The 1950s
How woman started in TV
Women stereotypes through the decades The idea of television began since the 1820s but it was until
1927 when the 21 year old Philo T. Farnsworth produce the first electronic television picture.
Experimental broadcast began, featuring music, wrestling, and dance; however, it was until the 1950s
that TV really became the new form of mass entertainment. Nevertheless, in all the shows that were
produced women was denigrated and producers focused mainly on their physical appearance and not
their intellect capacity. Ward and Harrison stated, TV has depicted females by focusing on their
physical characteristics, sexual appeal, and romantic success, whether they are housewives, mothers,
or objects of desire. Women did not have a choice, they were placed on TV shows with a certain
stereotype needed to be fulfilled by them, and because they wanted to work they did not deny the job,
therefore, they encouraged the stereotype.

television, TV has portrayed females in many ways, studies have shown that women have been
underrepresented and stereotyped in TV programs. Women have been living under that invisible
stereotype that has cornered them and does not allow them to grow professionally or socially. TV has
been the master mind behind a stereotype that has left women without the chance of demanding
equality or credibility on shows, a stereotype that will always be mentioned and enforce if TV shows

Public Spaces
Race and Power in Public Spaces Last Friday, June 26, I have chosen to go to the food court inside the
Students Union in order to make my observation for this second ethnographic paper. As we discussed
in class, observation is type of field work that anthropologists do in order to collect data and effectuate
studies about the same data. As a way to collect better results in my observation at the Students
Unions, I decided to go during launch time willing to observe a huge number of people in that place.
While I was there, I was focused on observing the way people behave when they are in a public
sphere, and how do they interact with each other. When I first arrived there, the first thing that I have
noticed is that most of the people in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I saw the way the Mexicans were behaving, I realized that it was connected to the idea of power
that we have discussed in class. As the teacher said in class, Power is the ability or potential to bring
about change (Storey). I believe that this idea applies to the Mexicans that I observed because they
feel incapable to bring change in America, so they act a little shy in public spaces. In my opinion, if
the American society treated all the people in the same way, avoiding the creation of stereotypes about
people from different races, those people would behave in a different way. Because race is very
important in America, people that is not white feel pressured to behave in certain way that will not
bother people with power, just like how the Mexican that I say acted like. On the other hand, I have
also made a connection to the concept that racism is socially constructed, when people started to look
at me in different way because I was sitting with a white girl. This made me realize that because
America does not feel comfortable about interracial relationship, they promote racism, and as
consequence, Americans do not know how to act in situations like this, so they see it as strange or
uncommon just like when they saw me with a white girl. From what I saw in my observation last
Friday, it seems that people in America is

Feminist Theory
Feminism refers to political, cultural, and economic movements aimed at establishing greater rights,
legal protection for women, and or women s liberation. It includes some of the sociological theories
and philosophies concerned with issues of gender difference. Nancy Cott defines feminism as the
belief in the importance of gender equality, invalidating the idea of gender hierarchy as a socially
constructed concept.
Feminism has earned itself a bad reputation, but it never undermined gender differences that exist
between males and females. A man can never be as good a mother as a female can. Similarly, a
woman can never be as good a father as a male can. While accepting these anatomical and
physiological differences between the two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They challenge the assumption that gender oppression is the primary force of patriarchy. They object
to portrayals of women of non Western societies as passive and voiceless victims and the portrayal of
Western women as modern, educated, and empowered.
Today, they struggle to fight gender oppression within their own cultural models of society rather than
through those imposed by the Western colonizers. They, thus, react against both universalizing
tendencies in Western feminist thought and a lack of attention to gender issues in mainstream
postcolonial thought.
Some postcolonial feminists, such as Chandra Talpade Mohanty and Black feminists, such as Angela
Davis and Alice Walker, are critical of Western feminism for being ethnocentric. Chandra Talpade
Mohanty criticizes Western feminism on the ground that it does not take into account the unique
experiences of women from third world countries or the existence of feminisms indigenous to third
world countries. This discourse is strongly related to African feminism and is also associated with
concepts such as black feminism, womanism, Africana womanism, motherism, Stiwanism,
negofeminism, chicana feminism, and femalism.
Pro feminism is the support of feminism without implying that the supporter is a member of the
feminist movement. The term is most often used in reference to men who are actively

Side Effects Of Cyber Bullying
Social media is a phrase that we throw around a lot these days, often to describe what we post on sites
and apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and others. The social part: refers to interacting
with other people by sharing information with them and receiving information from them. The media
part: refers to an instrument of communication, like the internet (while TV, radio, and newspapers are
examples of more traditional forms of media). Social media are web based communication tools that
enable people to interact with each other by both sharing and consuming information. However, social
media may have some side effects such as cyberbullying, which may have negative impacts on the life
of people, especially children and teenagers. Cyberbullying can be defined as aggressive, intentional
actions performed by an individual or a group of people via digital communication methods such as
sending messages and posting comments against a victim. Different from traditional bullying that
usually occurs at school during face to face communication, cyberbullying on social media can take
place anywhere at any time. For bullies, they are free to hurt their peers feelings because they do not
need to face someone and can hide behind the Internet. For victims, they are easily exposed to
harassment since all of us, especially youth, are constantly connected to Internet or social media. As
reported cyberbullying victimization rate ranges from 10% to 40%. In the United States,

The Negative Effects Of Oil Drilling
As polar ice in the Arctic region melts, there are many implications associated with it. The melting ice
opens up sea lanes, providing access to priceless natural resources, such as the estimated 90 billion
barrels of the world s undiscovered oil (Karaim 336). For the United States, this is a great opportunity.
Access to these energy reserves would open up expansion of the oil industry, which advocates of oil
drilling say will lead to extensive economic development (Karaim 335) in northern Alaska and the rest
of the Arctic region. However, scientists caution that an increase in oil drilling will have destructive
effects on the environment. Increased greenhouse gas pollution from oil drilling facilitate global
warming, which will melt even more polar ice, absorbing more sunlight and harming vivid Arctic
ecosystems. The higher risk for oil spills will harm marine wildlife, which translates to harming the
indigenous Arctic peoples. Their diets will be altered, new diseases will be introduced, and the
changing of the Arctic land will restrict their rich cultural traditions and lifestyles. Although oil
drilling will facilitate economic development in the Arctic, it should not be continued because its
implementation is not sustainable for the environment, nor does it improve the lifestyles of the
indigenous Arctic peoples.
One concern that scientists have regarding oil drilling in the Arctic is the perpetuation of climate
change that comes along with it. Expansion of the oil

remembered as one of the great modernist American Poets. Wallace Stevens ability to transcend the
limits of experience, combined with his technical prowess as a poet, makes for otherworldly poetry of
the everyday world. You can see this in his poem simply titled Anecdote of the Jar . On first glance,
this poem seems insignificant and not very interesting but if you look at it closely the beauty shines
through. The poem can seem dry and boring when he describes the jar, And round it was... the jar was
gray and bare (lines 2 and 10). Even though these lines might seem boring it is part of Stevens Imagist
poetry style that stressed absolute precision in presenting the image itself rather than oblique
description. Another interesting aspect of Stevens poetry is that it can be perceived multiple ways. The
jar was round upon the ground / And tall and of port in the air. This line could be read as the jar being
round, tall, and large; or the port could be a metaphor comparing the jar and air to the port and sea, a
passage way (lines 7 8). It (the jar) did not give of bird or bush. The line could be perceived

Research Paper On Atherosclerosis
Introduction Atherosclerosis is the other name for arteriosclerosis, which means arterial hardness.
Arteries carry blood from the heart to the other parts of the body. Healthy arteries are flexible,
sufficiently elastic and strong. Arterial stiffness is common in everyone as they age, which can lead to
restriction of blood flow to the vital organs. This decrease in blood flow might result in heart attack
and stroke. This article discusses various strong and good scientific evidences of dietary supplements
used for preventing and treating Atherosclerosis. Accumulation of fat, LDL cholesterol and calcium in
the arterial walls leads to Atherosclerosis. The accumulated plaque might block the flow of blood in
the artery leading to the loss of blood and oxygen supply to the vital organs. The blocking of blood
flow by the clot results in deep vein thrombosis in the legs and pulmonary embolism in lungs. Clots
mostly create problems in brain, heart and legs, although they can be seen in any part of the body. The
reduction in the oxygen supply to the body parts also happens ... Show more content on

Endothelium will naturally harden as one ages, although certain factors can fasten the process.
Damage in this layer due to high levels of free radicals and low levels of antioxidants, can trigger the
plaque formation. Damage of endothelium occurs due to the intake of high cholesterol diet and
tobacco and high blood pressure resulting in worsening of Atherosclerosis. Endothelial damage leads
to inflammation, causing plaque formation. Atherosclerosis further leads to a condition called
Peripheral artery disease. Progression of Atherosclerosis can be prevented by following a healthy
lifestyle, by avoiding some risk factors, by taking some medications and through a possible surgery.

ACE Inhibitor Personal Statement
Replace fear of the unknown with curiosity. These words have been the driving force behind who I am
today. Whether it is ordering a new dish at a restaurant, trying on a new outfit, choosing my high
school subjects, or narrowing differential diagnoses; my inquisitive nature has always propelled me
forward.
Being accepted at the Aga Khan University Medical College, Pakistan s premier healthcare institution,
gave me the opportunity to foster this curiosity. Each lecture challenged me to learn a new concept, be
it simple as the mechanism of action of an ACE inhibitor (hint: it s in the name) or as complex as the
intricate course of a particular artery. During my literature searches, I found that discovering cutting
edge therapies for previously incurable diseases are now approved for use has been a particularly
satisfying way to learn.
I started my clinical years with an open mind to every specialty with the goal of finding the specialty

A Experiment On Paramecium Experiment Essay
Paramecium Experiment Introduction The purpose of the paramecium experiment was to observe
competition or allelopathy between two different species of paramecium in the laboratory. Allelopathy
is a way organisms inhibit or affect other organisms when developing in nature. This insures the
survival of one organism against another organism. For instance in plants, some can release a
chemical that enters the environment and inhibits the growth and development of surrounding plants.
Another example in nature is plants developing defenses to prevent herbivores from eating them. This
kind of competition happens in nature when the need for resources is limited and survival is necessary.
Competition is displayed throughout nature all the time. A man named Georgy Gause previously
conducted this experiment between P. aurelia and P. caudatum. He determined that different factors
influence how the two species compete and coexist. Ever since then not many scientist have attempted
to experiment on paramecium. Only until recently have more experiments been attempted. The issue
with the experiment was that it was conducted in 1935 and nowadays there are more advance ways to
conduct and interpret the experiment and results. As previously stated, knowledge on this particular
subject has been limited. Ever since Gause s experiment, not many other scientists have attempted it
until recently. As a class, the experiment was a way to observe competition and better interpret the
results gathered

It is amazing how very little some people know about the continent not country of Africa, let alone the

Most Kenyans are heavy tea and coffee drinkers and do not consider a meal to be complete without
chai.
Nigerians generally have a wider variety of food than Kenyans, partly due to the Nigerian tropical
climate and vegetation that offers a larger variation of foods in comparison to the mostly dry and
unfertile land of Kenya. The common items on the Nigerian menu range from various finger foods to
more filling items. The finger foods include chin chin, crunchy little donuts cut into tiny squares about
one centimeter long and one centimeter wide, kose, little fried bean cakes with onions and red
peppers, suya, kabobs that are generously seasoned with cayenne pepper and staked on sticks between
slices of tomatoes, and fried sweet plantains lightly sprinkled with salt. The more filling foods include
pounded yams and egusi soup. Yams, the staple crop in Nigeria, are like gigantic potatoes often the
length of a grown man s arm. The yams are boiled and then pounded in a mortar to create a dish
dissimilar in taste but similar in looks to mashed potatoes. Egusi soup is prepared from a melon seed
that is ground into a powder and then combined with palm oil, crayfish, fresh fish, stock fish, spinach
leaves, and either chicken or beef. A choice of pounded yam or rice is always offered. Rice in different
forms will be prepared: plain white rice with a tomato stew, jollof rice prepared with tomato sauce and

Gas Prices in the United States
Gas Prices in the United States Introduction and Claim No one enjoys paying high prices for gasoline
in the United States. In fact when gasoline prices rise to levels above $3 and $4 dollars and even up to
$5 a gallon it hurts the economy because it hurts consumers. This paper focuses on gasoline prices and
how gasoline prices affect the way Americans drive their cars and trucks. Thesis: Notwithstanding the
cynical view that gasoline distributors are manipulating prices to gouge consumers, the literature
reflects that prices rise and fall in most cases primarily based on market driven forces, and on
problems with refineries. Moreover, when the government sets higher mileage standards for vehicles,
it means cars go a lot farther on a gallon notwithstanding the price of that gallon of gasoline. The
Literature on Gasoline Prices Background As a quick review, information provided by the Research
and Innovative Technology Administration, a division of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics
(which is a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation) is helpful in terms of following the
prices of the cost of a gallon of gasoline from January 2002 through January 2012. In January, 2002,
the average cost of a gallon of gasoline was just over a dollar; by January 2004 the cost of a gallon of
gasoline had risen to $1.75; and by January 2006 the price rose to around $3.00 a gallon. Then in
January 2008 the cost of gas was up to $4.00; it dipped to around $2.00 briefly in 2009

Social Self As Part Of Depression
Adding on to that, another study showed a culturally salient factor ,negative social self as constituting
part of depression. (Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.225) This negative social self was found to
cause hopelessness, poor self esteem, and control related beliefs. (Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007,
p.225) The study goes on to further state that culturally embedded stressors (Yamamoto et al. 1997,
cited in Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.226) strongly influences the phenomenological
experiences of emotions and their communications. (Koh, Chang ,Fung and Kee 2007, p.226) It was

Moreover, a study by Kross and Grossmann (2010) highlights the impact of culture on adaptive versus
maladaptive self reflection by comparing Americans and Russians, whereby culture was shown to
affect the amount of self distancing of emotions, with the Russians being found to have less
detrimental forms of self reflection. This proves that culture can affect the amount and type of self
reflections that individuals carry out, as well as the extent of self distancing. As shown through this
study, self distancing could serve as a regulator for an individual s emotions or the impact of emotions
on the cognitive aspect of the individual. Another study by Falicov (2003) proves that there were more
stigmatization of mental illnesses such as depression in collectivist societies as compared to
individualistic ones, whereby a Japanese woman confided in a close friend of hers only for her friend
to shun her. With such stigmatization, it is less likely that people will be open to acknowledge their
problems or seek help in collectivist societies, leading to the sustainment of depression due to the
extent of expressed emotions in such cultures.
On top of that, culture is also shown to affect thought processes. Members of collectivistic tendencies
tend to focus on negative consequences while members of individualistic tendencies tend to focus
more on positive consequences. (Lee et al. 2000, Briley Wyer 2002, cited in Diener, Oishi Lucas 2003,
p.412) This

An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser
The American Dream has been the subject of countless American novels since it first was concepted.
Though the specifics have evolved over time, and it is unique to each person, the general idea has
stayed the same: become rich, retire early, own a large home and high quality items. In the book, An
American Tragedy, main character Clyde Griffiths is one of many who pine for the American dream,
wanting . . . the fine clothes, the handsome homes, the watches, rings, pins that someboys sported . . .
(Dreiser 19) and a high class social status not to mention the benefits that coincide with being high
class.. However, regardless of how much Griffiths dreamed his dream, he was never to achieve it.
Throughout An American Tragedy, the sentiment that Clyde Griffiths was not meant to live the
American Dream echoed numerous times in how he was raised, the era in which the novel is set, and
the unique personality which clearly defined his character. A huge factor which determined the plot of
the book was the method by which Griffiths was raised. In the first five chapters of An American
Tragedy, Clyde s home life is portrayed. Griffiths was a young boy who was born into a low class
family, and whose life centered on Evangelical teaching. Growing up, his parents constantly barraged
him with their strong religious beliefs, and enforced their morals with great force and conviction.
Unfortunately, they raised Clyde by using the authoritarian parenting method, contributing greatly to

Canada s Independence Of Canada
Between its establishment and the 1960 s, Canada rarely had any French speaking people in
authoritative or executive positions, and that led Quebecers to fear the loss of their language and

change, and a debate over Quebec s future began, and is still going on today. Much has happened to
make the notion of Quebec s sovereignty highly controversial, and as an issue, it is overlooked and

Eventually, the pressure pushed the issue to an election, in 1980, and, in a 60/40 vote, Quebec ends up
remaining a part of Canada, which causes supporters to throw blame (Cooper). It finally seems like
the issue is resolved, but, no less than two years after the election, the British North America Act is
adopted as Canada s constitution, and all of the provinces, excluding Quebec, meet and change the
constitution to give them equal voices in the government, but Quebec rejects the change (Cohen). By
the time the 1990 rolls around, there is still no solution for the constitution issue, and the debate only
grows deeper. In 1992, however, the provinces and territories compromise, and recognize Quebec as a
distinct society , which was rejected later that year (Cooper). Four years later, everything was
authorized to declare Quebec s independence, but, negotiations with the rest of Canada fail to produce
an agreement, so, it fell through. The topic is not brought up

Sir Phillip Sidney s Sonnet #47 from Astrophil and Stella
Sir Phillip Sidney s Sonnet # 47 from Astrophil and Stella The sonnet is a short concise form of
writing and it takes a great mind to master it. By mastering it, I mean to be able to say so much in
what seems like so little space. Sir Phillip Sidney comes as close to mastering it as anyone else in his
time or any other does. As the opening line says, this is about a betrayal. Strangely enough, the last
line of the sonnet ends with a word that is the very essence of betrayal. The sonnet ends with the word,
lie. This would cause one to expect to get an explanation of the betrayal between the first and last
lines. This appears to be a story of both love and betrayal. In the ... Show more content on

In the second, line is questions whether he wants the spirit to show that he despises his love. He has
wanted her for a long time and he is in misery without her, he is in this deep misery and the only thing
he has is his despise for begging. The third quatrain is different from the first two in its format. The
first line is indented and the other three are not. This would cause one to think that this line is set apart
for a reason. The first two words say why, it is an exclamation to wake up. It is meant to stand out
much like a mother coming into a child s room and yelling wake up very early in the morning. Here,
the narrator is telling Virtue within himself to awake. He wants to do the right thing. He realizes that
although this girl is beautiful, he does not love her and he must let her go. It is not fair to hold on to
someone in a relationship or in the words of the first quatrain, keep someone a slave to you, if you do
not love them. This is a commentary from over four hundred years ago that is still true in relationships
today. Today, people will date or stay together in an unhealthy relationship for stupid reasons or
superficial reasons and either one or both of the people do not love the other. The last couplet, the
closing lines of the sonnet, also tell the story of relationships today. In the beginning of the
relationship he thought that he may have been in love with her.

Immigrants And The United States
An immigrant is a person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another country or region to
which one is not native. Coming from a whole different lifestyle and culture, those who immigrate
into the U.S. are hit with overwhelming changes. Although citizenship has its advantages, many
immigrants have too much pride or love for their country that they choose to stay immigrants rather
than become fully documented citizens. It is important to understand how they are viewed differently
so people can work towards citizenship. Citizens and immigrants differ mainly in the resources they
are provided with, such as opportunities, work ethic, and education.
One way citizens and immigrants differ is in the opportunities provided for them. For example,
citizens obtain the right to vote in United States federal and local elections, can hold jobs in
government, and serve on juries. United States citizens can also leave and re enter the U.S. at any time
without requiring a re entry permit. There are also no restrictions to how long they can remain outside
of the country. On the other hand, immigrants are denied any of those rights and can only travel for a
certain amount of time or it is considered abandonment of residency and are denied re entry into the

Macbeth: Easy Questions, Difficult Answers
DERICK MARSH
Macbeth is not an obscure play. The course of the action, unlike that of Hamlet, can easily be
summarized. Most readers and audiences can come to some general agreement on what the play is
about, provided that they can offer answers to the two major questions of understanding that the play
poses. These answers, it need hardly be said, cannot be precise and absolute, since Shakespeare s
plays, like life, never allow us the delusion of perfect understanding. Nevertheless, we do need to
decide what we are invited to think and feel about Macbeth and what he does. In particular, we have to
consider why he acts as he does; why, in the first place, he kills Duncan, and then why, acting ... Show

vulnerable to be seen as any kind of embodiment of pure evil. Macbeth s state of mind is more

Comparing Upper Body Muscular Endurance On Female...
Purpose:
The purpose of the study was clearly stated in the introduction of the article. The purpose of the study
was to compare upper body muscular endurance in female university level modern dancers and female
students who do not dance, but are physically active. Studies have shown that dancing put dancers at a
high risk of becoming injured. Modern dancers are at a higher risk of becoming injured than any other
dancers due to the physical demands of upper body movement.
Hypothesis:
The authors stated the hypothesis for their expected outcomes. They believe that these female
university level modern dancers will have more upper body muscular endurance than non dancers.
The only down fall for this study is that the authors have not found any research to support their
hypothesis.
Research Design:
The participants were thirty two females from a college s modern dance program who had no history
of injuries for the previous three months. The authors did not select these participants; the program
recruited them. The non dancers were randomly selected amongst the university s population. The
participants had to be in compliance with the study s minimal inclusion physical activity criterion.
Therefore, physical activity data was collected from all the participants. The authors received consent
from the university s Institutional Review Board to conduct the study. They also gave the participants

Baker s Cyst Removal
The man who first discovered the baker s cyst in the mid 1800 s was a british man named Dr. William
Morant Baker. A baker s cyst also known as a popliteal cyst is located in the middle of the
semimembranosus tendon and medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle (Snir, 2013). Sometimes the
Baker s cyst can be mistaken for a blood clot because it presents the same symptoms. A magnetic
resonance imaging scan (MRI) can determine if the patient indeed has a cyst on the back of their leg.
Other tests may be done to make sure that the cyst is not a malignant or benign tumor before the
surgeon tries to excise it. A baker s cyst is formed when a patient has damage, arthritis, or a meniscus
tear in their knee. Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis are generally the main cause of a formation
of a baker s cyst (Houston Methodist, 2015). Although any kind of knee injury could eventually lead
to a painful baker s cyst. Too much exercise can also hinder the healing of the cyst. Wright (2015)
stated that, A Baker s cyst most commonly occurs in children aged 4 to 7 years and in adults aged 35

Albuterol is considered as a rescue medication for COPD and asthma, has a short acting anticoligernic
mediated action, and it is a smooth muscle relaxer with bronchial dilator effect. Ipratropium is very
effective for treating COPD because it reduces mucus gland secretion, and Theophylline relaxes
brachial smooth muscle and has an anti inflammatory effect (Davis s Drug Guide for Nurses, 2014).
All these medications can help J.T.s COPD because they either to open up the bronchial caused by
COPD or related obstruction or decrease the secretion due to excess mucus production. Both the
HCTZ and Amlodipine and HCTZ are treatment for J.T s underlying hypertension which does not
have adverse effects on J.T. COPD.
Laboratory Blood Test results
According to J.T. s labs, high levels of sodium, chloride, magnesium, creatinine and blood urea
nitrogen, hemoglobin and hematocrit are indicative of dehydration as well the activation Renin
Angiotensin Aldosterone system. For example, when there is a decreased blood flow to the kidneys
due to dehydration leading to electrolyte reabsorption (Mosby s Diagnostic and Laboratory Test
reference, 2014). Furthermore,

  • 2. Actuality In Tim OBrien s The Things They Carried In Tim O Brien s shocking war story, The Things They Carried , the author does a few things that would be considered odd in the modern world of literature, these include telling the readers beforehand whether or not the story will have a happy/ tragic ending, and the factuality. His habit of revealing the result of the story beforehand, is much like the prologue of Shakespeare s play, Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare states, Is now the two hours traffic of our stage; The which, if you with patient ears attend, What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend (p. 7). This practice has been executed for centuries, and has the reader focus more on the story details to see how everything will play out, instead of getting wrapped up in how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of this quote within the story, is to remind readers of the emotional journey and how war can affect people, years after it s all over these men won t be thinking of whether their friends died on a Wednesday or a Thursday, because it won t matter. Their friend will still be gone. Personally, I find his random tidbits of what is factual and what is O Brien s imagination to be annoying and pointless, because the only people who could know the truth would be the people who lived it. As a reader, it d be wise if he were to just write the stories and let his audience make up their own minds about what they read; that s what defines a story. He states, War is hell, but that s not the half of it, because war is also mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair and longing and love. War is nasty; war is fun. War is thrilling; war is drudgery. War makes you a man; war makes you dead. (Pg. 76). This excerpt from the text meant more to me than majority of this novel whether it fits his definition of a true war story , because it s the most honest depiction I ve read in awhile. When it comes down to it, it isn t about the factuality or even the small details, a true story is based on the way it made the reader feel. • 3. Local and Regional Forces Section B. Is local diversity a product of regional forces, local forces, or both, and how might we know? In ecology, the change in species diversity across space and time is one of the oldest studied subjects, however the underlying causes of many diversity patterns is under much debate (Field et al. 2001; MacArthur, 1972; Rosenzweig, 1995). How does diversity arise (Erwin 1991)? How is diversity distributed in space (Dean et al. 1997, Fonseca et al. 2000)? And how is diversity maintained (Lande, 1988)? Are three fundamental questions that ecologist look to answer. Early studies focused around the role of competition in determining diversity at local scales, today however it is emphasized that many factors on top of competition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second type of manipulation varies the isolation of regional areas from a species source region and thus the species pools for their embedded communities which is represented in a marine study where reef environments are associated with coral species assemblages (Cornell et al. 2004; 2008). Five regions with different diversities at three local scales along a longitudinal gradient from Indonesian archipelago, where species richness peaks at 600+ sp., to the French Polynesia, with only a peak of 130 (Cornell et al. 2004). The eastward decline in richness is explained by declining area of shallow water habitat within each region (Bellwood et al. 2005) partnered with isolation from the Indonesian diversity hotspot due to distance (Cornell amp; Karlson, 1998) and westward flowing currents (Connolly et al. 2003) suggesting regional influence on species diversity. Slopes of regressions of log LSR on log RSR were linear suggesting local assemblages are again open to enrichment from regional species pool (Cornell et al. 2008). Following on from this, substantial literature has sought to document what has come to be termed the local regional richness relationship (Caley amp; Schluter, 1997; Cornell, 1999; Cornell amp; Lawton, 1992; Gaston, 2000; Gaston amp; Koleff, 2002; Lawton, ... National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) indicates that the typical park and recreation agency has 9.6 acres of parkland for per 1,000 residents and even the lower quartile of the rate is still 4.6. NPPA also recommend 4 acres per 1,000 as a standard. However, the Chinatown only has 2.5 acres of park space per 1,000 residents, which is much lower than the typical and recommended standard. • 5. Teenage Pregnancy At A Young Age In order for a child to grow and prosper, a stable environment should be in place. Without a stable environment, it can cause that child to act out and chaos will be a result of that. During teenage years, kids will often experiment with the opposite sex due to curiosity and things they are learning from their peers. Teenage pregnancy has many outside influences besides the individual themselves, one being the media. The teen s sex education level can explain a lot about the knowledge they have on the topic. Pregnancy at a young age is becoming more prevalent for more reasons than one. Teen pregnancy rates have seemed to be increasing remarkably in the United States, as oppose to westernized countries. Influences linked to affecting teen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A trend of early marriage and parenthood was very popular amongst the middle class during the 1900s. In the 1900s, only 1/3 of females had their first child before twenty years old. Researchers have said that this put an immense amount of pressure on teen girls about having to be married if they were pregnant, so this led to many young couples getting married at age twenty or younger. Today, statistics show 80% of teen pregnancies are reported unintended. That s quite a difference. The epidemic of teens becoming pregnant ends up hurting the young women in more ways than one. Unprotected sex is beginning to occur more frequently. Most teens understand the risks and consequences of engaging in sexual behaviors at such a young age; however, they don t seem to take any precautions to prevent pregnancy from occurring. Teens often want to experiment when they see their peers, and people they look up to, doing such acts. In these circumstances, the media is to blame. The television airs shows such as Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant which are supposed to prevent teens from making the same mistakes as some of the young girls featured on the shows. 16 and Pregnant shows the reality and struggle all these teens encounter while being pregnant, as well as after giving birth. • 6. Palestine Water Conflict Essay The Palestine and Michigan water crises have narratives to justify both inequality and equality of the water distribution. In each case, It may seem like one side is more agreeable than the other, however both sides are able to validate their part. These justifications will be further explained by the narratives about water that correlate with each event. To Palestine, water is a human right. Palestinians are not able to access water from the Jordan River because the proposed construction of a water canal was shut down due to the Israeli occupancy of the land that it would need to pass through (Friends of the Earth International, 2013). In this case they are specifically talking about clean water. The state government switched their water supply to the Flint River in order to save money and failed to put water treatments in place. Throughout the crisis, the concerns or the citizens and professionals were continually set aside. This resulted in lead polluted water reaching the homes of the civilians and causing many long term health issues (Ganim, Tran, 2013). The intense effects on the civilians justifies their claim that clean water is a human right. The at the time of the water supply switch in Flint, the Michigan government was experiencing financial difficulties. This is a main reason why the supply was switched to begin with. The government did not add corrosion control treatments because they weren t able to do so without updating equipment that was too expensive for the city (Kaffer, 2016). The government was not able to afford proper water treatment but did not want to completely cut off the water supply to the civilians. The tests they had conducted showed rising levels of lead but not enough for them to believe they should deny water supply (Kaffer, 2016). The government s severe financial situation justifies their actions of water distribution. The actors in each water crisis situation have a way to justify their decisions. As I gave feedback, I utilized the following skills: I provided feedback in a timely manner immediately after the skill check so that the account of my observations would be fresh in mind. I focused on actionable behaviors, rather than things she could not change. When she seemed flustered and forgetful, I suggested that she take a moment to gather her thoughts, and move slowly through the process until she felt calm and proficient. I used specific examples and concise language. When I noticed that the residents shoes were sticking out from under the side of the bed and looked like a trip hazard, I suggested that the head of the bed would be a safer place to put them. Through the years I still have this sudden niche for traveling and experiencing new and exciting things. From Costa Rica to much of the United States I have ventured upon a lot of traveling. Through the sale of my parents family business I received the opportunity to travel west and help the new owners grow. After traveling through many of the western states I finally realized how different not only the terrain was, but culture as well. The state of Utah has many differences from my home state of Minnesota. Starting from basic terrain Utah is full of endless hills and valleys ranging from thousands of feet above and below sea level. The four wheeler trails are also abundant and never ending. A friend and I rented a side by side for a day and drove for hours exploring the wilderness of Utah. The state run trails are not only for four wheelers, but for hiking as well. Bryce Canyon, the red rock capital of Utah is definitely a sight to see. Jim Barton, the supervisor of four departments within the main location in Denver, was struggling with developing a process to improve the store s sales. Barton identified with the notion that the decrease in sales volume was a simple matter of a slowdown in the economic landscape, and that the downturn would effect all stores in the retail business. However, Barton s superior, Mr. Cornwall, the general merchandiser of Denver Department Stores, told Barton that some stores have experienced a 15% gain in recent sales. Cornwall made it clear that he expected Barton s segments to have sales equal to the other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mr. Barton can be defined as a Type B person. As noted previously, he views the sales decline as a result of just one problem: a bad economy. He is correct that certain economic factors contribute in consumers choosing certain goods over another, but he allows this view to block his ability to work through a solution that might increase sales. As suggested earlier, Denver Department Stores has been experiencing declining sales over a period of a few months, though the actual reason why this is happening is unknown. A general consensus of the employees is that there have been fewer customers recently, however, management has placed the blame on the employees for not working hard enough to make a sale. Initially, as sales began to decline, employees were somewhat social, and appear to have spent more time speaking with customers. To remedy the issue of falling sales revenue, management has implemented a tally card system to encourage the employees to work harder at making sales. With the tally card system, division of labor was lost. Employees of all levels and all departments were provided the same goal of making sales a priority. This included not only regular employees, but also department heads. Putting out and straightening up stock items was pushed aside, leaving the store and backroom looking cluttered, and provided a more cutthroat work environment for employees. • 11. The Transformation of the Role of Women within Victorian... The role of women during the Victorian Era has been a prevalent topic over the course of the semester. Women during that time had limited rights, and the rights they did have were equivalent to that of children. Domesticity, caring for their husband and children was the focus of their livelihood. As England continued to grow and industrialize, women became more marginalized, while men continued to grow into dominant members of society, this is known as the notion of separate spheres. The notion of separate spheres was not limited to the role women and men had in the home, but extended into the streets and the workplace. Men were seen as formidable, intellectual, and the governing sex; whereas, women on the other hand, were disregarded as emotionally unstable, dominated by their sexuality, and submissive to men s wants and desires. Women were not only given limited rights to the roles they had in society, but also were not given the right to choose whom they wanted to marry. A majority of women had no other option but to marry as a way to maintain their livelihood, unless they were members of high social standings. Additionally, the rights of a woman were again lessened after she wed. The moment a woman married, she automatically became the property of her husband. The limited rights she had before were stripped away: her property, identity, and value ceased to exist the moment she became the helpmate to a man. The ideology of the role women played did not ... Experimental broadcast began, featuring music, wrestling, and dance; however, it was until the 1950s that TV really became the new form of mass entertainment. Nevertheless, in all the shows that were produced women was denigrated and producers focused mainly on their physical appearance and not their intellect capacity. Ward and Harrison stated, TV has depicted females by focusing on their physical characteristics, sexual appeal, and romantic success, whether they are housewives, mothers, or objects of desire. Women did not have a choice, they were placed on TV shows with a certain stereotype needed to be fulfilled by them, and because they wanted to work they did not deny the job, therefore, they encouraged the stereotype. Public Spaces Race and Power in Public Spaces Last Friday, June 26, I have chosen to go to the food court inside the Students Union in order to make my observation for this second ethnographic paper. As we discussed in class, observation is type of field work that anthropologists do in order to collect data and effectuate studies about the same data. As a way to collect better results in my observation at the Students Unions, I decided to go during launch time willing to observe a huge number of people in that place. As the teacher said in class, Power is the ability or potential to bring about change (Storey). In my opinion, if the American society treated all the people in the same way, avoiding the creation of stereotypes about people from different races, those people would behave in a different way. Because race is very important in America, people that is not white feel pressured to behave in certain way that will not bother people with power, just like how the Mexican that I say acted like. On the other hand, I have also made a connection to the concept that racism is socially constructed, when people started to look at me in different way because I was sitting with a white girl. This made me realize that because America does not feel comfortable about interracial relationship, they promote racism, and as consequence, Americans do not know how to act in situations like this, so they see it as strange or uncommon just like when they saw me with a white girl. It includes some of the sociological theories and philosophies concerned with issues of gender difference. Nancy Cott defines feminism as the belief in the importance of gender equality, invalidating the idea of gender hierarchy as a socially constructed concept. Feminism has earned itself a bad reputation, but it never undermined gender differences that exist between males and females. A man can never be as good a mother as a female can. Some postcolonial feminists, such as Chandra Talpade Mohanty and Black feminists, such as Angela Davis and Alice Walker, are critical of Western feminism for being ethnocentric. Chandra Talpade Mohanty criticizes Western feminism on the ground that it does not take into account the unique experiences of women from third world countries or the existence of feminisms indigenous to third world countries. The media part: refers to an instrument of communication, like the internet (while TV, radio, and newspapers are examples of more traditional forms of media). Social media are web based communication tools that enable people to interact with each other by both sharing and consuming information. • 17. The Negative Effects Of Oil Drilling As polar ice in the Arctic region melts, there are many implications associated with it. The melting ice opens up sea lanes, providing access to priceless natural resources, such as the estimated 90 billion barrels of the world s undiscovered oil (Karaim 336). For the United States, this is a great opportunity. Access to these energy reserves would open up expansion of the oil industry, which advocates of oil drilling say will lead to extensive economic development (Karaim 335) in northern Alaska and the rest of the Arctic region. However, scientists caution that an increase in oil drilling will have destructive effects on the environment. Increased greenhouse gas pollution from oil drilling facilitate global warming, which will melt even more polar ice, absorbing more sunlight and harming vivid Arctic ecosystems. The higher risk for oil spills will harm marine wildlife, which translates to harming the indigenous Arctic peoples. Their diets will be altered, new diseases will be introduced, and the changing of the Arctic land will restrict their rich cultural traditions and lifestyles. Although oil drilling will facilitate economic development in the Arctic, it should not be continued because its implementation is not sustainable for the environment, nor does it improve the lifestyles of the indigenous Arctic peoples. Wallace Stevens ability to transcend the limits of experience, combined with his technical prowess as a poet, makes for otherworldly poetry of the everyday world. • 24. A Experiment On Paramecium Experiment Essay Paramecium Experiment Introduction The purpose of the paramecium experiment was to observe competition or allelopathy between two different species of paramecium in the laboratory. Allelopathy is a way organisms inhibit or affect other organisms when developing in nature. This insures the survival of one organism against another organism. For instance in plants, some can release a chemical that enters the environment and inhibits the growth and development of surrounding plants. Another example in nature is plants developing defenses to prevent herbivores from eating them. This kind of competition happens in nature when the need for resources is limited and survival is necessary. Competition is displayed throughout nature all the time. A man named Georgy Gause previously conducted this experiment between P. aurelia and P. caudatum. He determined that different factors influence how the two species compete and coexist. Ever since then not many scientist have attempted to experiment on paramecium. Only until recently have more experiments been attempted. The issue with the experiment was that it was conducted in 1935 and nowadays there are more advance ways to conduct and interpret the experiment and results. In fact when gasoline prices rise to levels above $3 and $4 dollars and even up to $5 a gallon it hurts the economy because it hurts consumers. This paper focuses on gasoline prices and how gasoline prices affect the way Americans drive their cars and trucks. Thesis: Notwithstanding the cynical view that gasoline distributors are manipulating prices to gouge consumers, the literature reflects that prices rise and fall in most cases primarily based on market driven forces, and on problems with refineries. However, in 1970, things took a turn for the worst, and the terrorist Quebec Liberation Front [kidnapped] and [killed] the provincial labor minister, and [took] a British diplomat hostage , Trudeau was forced to use martial law (Cooper). Eventually, the pressure pushed the issue to an election, in 1980, and, in a 60/40 vote, Quebec ends up remaining a part of Canada, which causes supporters to throw blame (Cooper). It finally seems like the issue is resolved, but, no less than two years after the election, the British North America Act is adopted as Canada s constitution, and all of the provinces, excluding Quebec, meet and change the constitution to give them equal voices in the government, but Quebec rejects the change (Cohen). By the time the 1990 rolls around, there is still no solution for the constitution issue, and the debate only grows deeper. In 1992, however, the provinces and territories compromise, and recognize Quebec as a distinct society , which was rejected later that year (Cooper). Four years later, everything was authorized to declare Quebec s independence, but, negotiations with the rest of Canada fail to produce an agreement, so, it fell through. • 32. Sir Phillip Sidney s Sonnet #47 from Astrophil and Stella... Sir Phillip Sidney s Sonnet #47 from Astrophil and Stella Sir Phillip Sidney s Sonnet # 47 from Astrophil and Stella The sonnet is a short concise form of writing and it takes a great mind to master it. By mastering it, I mean to be able to say so much in what seems like so little space. Sir Phillip Sidney comes as close to mastering it as anyone else in his time or any other does. As the opening line says, this is about a betrayal. Strangely enough, the last line of the sonnet ends with a word that is the very essence of betrayal. The sonnet ends with the word, lie. This would cause one to expect to get an explanation of the betrayal between the first and last lines. This appears to be a story of both love and betrayal. In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the second, line is questions whether he wants the spirit to show that he despises his love. He has wanted her for a long time and he is in misery without her, he is in this deep misery and the only thing he has is his despise for begging. The third quatrain is different from the first two in its format. The first line is indented and the other three are not. This would cause one to think that this line is set apart for a reason. The first two words say why, it is an exclamation to wake up. It is meant to stand out much like a mother coming into a child s room and yelling wake up very early in the morning. Here, the narrator is telling Virtue within himself to awake. He wants to do the right thing. He realizes that although this girl is beautiful, he does not love her and he must let her go. It is not fair to hold on to someone in a relationship or in the words of the first quatrain, keep someone a slave to you, if you do not love them. This is a commentary from over four hundred years ago that is still true in relationships today. Today, people will date or stay together in an unhealthy relationship for stupid reasons or superficial reasons and either one or both of the people do not love the other. The last couplet, the closing lines of the sonnet, also tell the story of relationships today. In the beginning of the relationship he thought that he may have been in love with her. ... • 33. Immigrants And The United States An immigrant is a person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another country or region to which one is not native. Coming from a whole different lifestyle and culture, those who immigrate into the U.S. are hit with overwhelming changes. Although citizenship has its advantages, many immigrants have too much pride or love for their country that they choose to stay immigrants rather than become fully documented citizens. It is important to understand how they are viewed differently so people can work towards citizenship. Citizens and immigrants differ mainly in the resources they are provided with, such as opportunities, work ethic, and education. One way citizens and immigrants differ is in the opportunities provided for them. For example, citizens obtain the right to vote in United States federal and local elections, can hold jobs in government, and serve on juries. United States citizens can also leave and re enter the U.S. at any time without requiring a re entry permit. There are also no restrictions to how long they can remain outside of the country. On the other hand, immigrants are denied any of those rights and can only travel for a certain amount of time or it is considered abandonment of residency and are denied re entry into the U.S. Bharati Mukherjee states in her article Two Ways to belong in America about adapting to a conventional American culture and its effects on a person s identity, Having my green card meant I could visit any place in the ... • 35. Expo Macbeth: Easy Questions, Difficult Answers DERICK MARSH Macbeth is not an obscure play. The course of the action, unlike that of Hamlet, can easily be summarized. Most readers and audiences can come to some general agreement on what the play is about, provided that they can offer answers to the two major questions of understanding that the play poses. These answers, it need hardly be said, cannot be precise and absolute, since Shakespeare s plays, like life, never allow us the delusion of perfect understanding. Nevertheless, we do need to decide what we are invited to think and feel about Macbeth and what he does. In particular, we have to consider why he acts as he does; why, in the first place, he kills Duncan, and then why, acting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The relation between them is more interesting than that. The deed they plan, the murder of a good, old, defenceless King, who is their kinsman and their guest, is so horrible that their natures abhor it, yet, in different ways, they stifle that abhorrence, thinking only of what they want, and not too directly 4 SYDNEY STUDIES of the way they will get it. Lady Macbeth s reaction is the more obvious of the two: in her famous unsex me here speech she tries deliberately to suppress her own humanity, transposing the horror of the deed into images of a terrible resolution, so that she will be able to do something that she knows is vile. Of course she cannot wholly succeed. The sleeping King reminds her of her father; the blood that is spilt returns to haunt her and drive her to distraction. She, like Macbeth himself, is far too vulnerable to be seen as any kind of embodiment of pure evil. Macbeth s state of mind is more complex, and perhaps therefore more likely to ... • 37. Comparing Upper Body Muscular Endurance On Female... Purpose: The purpose of the study was clearly stated in the introduction of the article. The purpose of the study was to compare upper body muscular endurance in female university level modern dancers and female students who do not dance, but are physically active. Studies have shown that dancing put dancers at a high risk of becoming injured. Modern dancers are at a higher risk of becoming injured than any other dancers due to the physical demands of upper body movement. Hypothesis: The authors stated the hypothesis for their expected outcomes. They believe that these female university level modern dancers will have more upper body muscular endurance than non dancers. The only down fall for this study is that the authors have not found any research to support their hypothesis. Research Design: The participants were thirty two females from a college s modern dance program who had no history of injuries for the previous three months. The authors did not select these participants; the program recruited them. The non dancers were randomly selected amongst the university s population. The participants had to be in compliance with the study s minimal inclusion physical activity criterion. Therefore, physical activity data was collected from all the participants. The authors received consent from the university s Institutional Review Board to conduct the study. They also gave the participants a consent form to read and sign. The researchers used a push up test to measure the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. The Baker s Cyst Removal Garcia, Amber Baker s Cyst Removal MDA 130 Mr. Kennedy Baker s Cyst Removal The man who first discovered the baker s cyst in the mid 1800 s was a british man named Dr. William Morant Baker. A baker s cyst also known as a popliteal cyst is located in the middle of the semimembranosus tendon and medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle (Snir, 2013). Sometimes the Baker s cyst can be mistaken for a blood clot because it presents the same symptoms. A magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI) can determine if the patient indeed has a cyst on the back of their leg. Other tests may be done to make sure that the cyst is not a malignant or benign tumor before the surgeon tries to excise it. A baker s cyst is formed when a patient has damage, arthritis, or a meniscus tear in their knee. Rheumatoid arthritis and Osteoarthritis are generally the main cause of a formation of a baker s cyst (Houston Methodist, 2015). Although any kind of knee injury could eventually lead to a painful baker s cyst. Too much exercise can also hinder the healing of the cyst. Wright (2015) stated that, A Baker s cyst most commonly occurs in children aged 4 to 7 years and in adults aged 35 to 70 years, as you can see that is a very large age gap. The cyst behind a child s knee rarely ever affects them and goes away in time, but for an adult it is harder to get rid of because the cyst is from a current knee joint problem. Most cases where it is not serious the cyst is usually aspirated of fluid. If the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Medication Impact On The Underlying Pathophysiology Medication Impact on the Underlying pathophysiology The following medications are J.T. s medication home regiment, Albuterol 180 micrograms (ug) MDI 2 inhalation every 6 hours as needed for dyspnea, Amlodipine, Ipratropium 36 ug MDI 2 inhalation every 6 hours, Theophylline 200mg mg by mouth twice a day and Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). Albuterol is considered as a rescue medication for COPD and asthma, has a short acting anticoligernic mediated action, and it is a smooth muscle relaxer with bronchial dilator effect. Ipratropium is very effective for treating COPD because it reduces mucus gland secretion, and Theophylline relaxes brachial smooth muscle and has an anti inflammatory effect (Davis s Drug Guide for Nurses, 2014). All these medications can help J.T.s COPD because they either to open up the bronchial caused by COPD or related obstruction or decrease the secretion due to excess mucus production. Both the HCTZ and Amlodipine and HCTZ are treatment for J.T s underlying hypertension which does not have adverse effects on J.T. COPD. Laboratory Blood Test results According to J.T. s labs, high levels of sodium, chloride, magnesium, creatinine and blood urea nitrogen, hemoglobin and hematocrit are indicative of dehydration as well the activation Renin Angiotensin Aldosterone system.
