Scott Fitzgerald s Use Of Metaphors In The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby Metaphors Metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implied or hidden
comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics. F. Scott
Fitzgerald uses metaphors to contribute to the novel s overall effect. The use of imagery helps the
description of the metaphor. Metaphor and imagery contribute largely to Fitzgerald s style in The
Great Gatsby. The three important metaphors that help contribute to the novel s overall effect are
where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent
effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air (Fitzgerald 23), under
Doctor Eckleburg s persistent stare. (Fitzgerald 24), and It had seemed as close as a star to the moon.
(Fitzgerald 93). The metaphor where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke
and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the
powdery air is important to the overall effect of the novel. This metaphor is a description of the valley
of ashes. The valley of ashes is the piece of land that connects West Egg and New York. About half

Wind Power s Power to Create Electricity Essay
Earth, as of today, is a world run by fuels and electricity. Every man, woman, and child is directly
affect by them, whether it is by its consumption, uses, or price. One of the more recent sources for
these fuels and electricity isn t actually very recent at all. Wind Energy, or Wind Power when it is
being converted into a useful form of energy, has actually been around for thousands of years. It has
been used to push ships, as natural ventilation, and to pump seawater.{Insert thesis Here}
James Blyth was a Scottish scientist who created the first electricity generating windmill, which
powered his vacation home in Marykirk, Scotland. The United Kingdom soon ruled his invention

Later, wind energy served mankind by energising his grain grinding mills and water pumps. During its
transformation from these crude and heavy devices to today s efficient and sophisticated machines, the
technology went through various phases of development....The earliest documented design of wind
mill dates back to 200 B.C. The Persians used wind mills from grinding grains during this period.
(Sathyajith Mathew 2) By the 14th Century, Windmills were being used as tools to drain the Rhine
delta by the Dutch. In the 1900s, the massive amount of windmills in Denmark was producing roughly
30 Megawatts of electricity. That is roughly enough electricity to power a small to medium sized
town. It is also enough to provide power to any one of these: 8,000 average homes, 400 fast food
restaurants, 60 large retail stores, 50 grocery stores, 40 large home improvement stores, 2 Sears
towers, 1 computer data center. The efficiency of a windmill, or the more modern wind turbine is one
of the most critical factors of production. With some certain wind turbines, the efficiency can and may
degrade slightly over time, but the time it takes for the production value to drop 10% is almost 20
years after the construction of that turbine, and even with that, not all turbines will degrade at that rate.
Also, not all of the energy of the blowing wind is useable, because as the scientific law of the
conservation of mass states that as much mass that enters the wind turbine must also exit

Affect Violence on Television has on Children Essay
Affect Violence on Television has on Children Don t Young Children Sponge It from Television? If a
stranger gives a candy and junk food to a child, the kid enjoys eating such foods even though they
produce the harmful effects of rotting away at his teeth. With a parent to limit child s intake of such
harmful sweets, however, the child is protected from their damage.
Similarly, the American public enjoys viewing violent and abusive programs at the risk of adapting
aggressive and unacceptable behaviors. Because the networks refuse to act as a mother and to limit the
amount of violence shown on television, there are no restrictions to prevent television s violent candy
from rotting away at the teeth of society. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Children (and even some adults), however, do not always realize this is not the way difficult situations
are handled in real life. Such youngsters come to expect the violence in everyday life; they create it to
be satisfied. Besides the fact that violence on television is able to be much more exciting and
enthralling than it is viewed in reality, the children find the violent and the hostile behaviors of the
characters in movies fun to imitate. They do imitate the models because the ideas shown on television
are more attractive to the viewers. This factor has been widely seen with the advent of the Mighty
Morphin Power Rangers and Star Wars. Young children cannot seem to get enough of this fictional
characters and portray them often. Or here is another example, after watching the movie Natural Born
Killers, students in Columbine High School killed numbers of their classmates and teachers thinking
that shooting was natural act to perform. Many other movies and shows as well as advertising on
television do perform the examples of violence and physical abuse: slapping, hitting, biting, spitting,
burning, and many other forms of physical aggressions that effect a young child s mind disrupting the
learning abilities and upsetting the moral balance. The information cannot be ignored. Violent
television viewing does effect young people.

Symbolism In Big Two Hearted River By Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway became one of the most notorious writers in the 20th century, likely due to his
abnormal style of writing. Hemingway in his writing introduced the new concept of Iceberg Theory
which gives the story a implicit meaning made by the author that should be further inferred by the
reader. In order to achieve this style Hemingway throughout his works used objects and movements
by characters to symbolize emotion, actions and other deeper objects. Many of Hemingway s symbols
reoccur among different stories; one of his most recurring symbols is a train/tracks which is used in
following Big Two Hearted River , Canary ,and Hills like White Elephants . In the first story Big Two

The Loss Of Stillborn Loss
Stillborn loss
Historically perinatal loss such as stillborn is rarely a topic of discussion. (Avelin, Erlandsson,
Hildingsson, Rådestad, 2011). Stillborn loss was not viewed as an problem, and was expected for
mothers to forget about the baby, and have another one, while siblings were told to forget about the
baby and not talk about the loss (Avelin et al., 2011). Perinatal loss responses can be vary widely as it
covers variety of loss from pregnancy to birth within a few weeks, but most often it is an unexpected
loss for many families who typically do not know what to do, what to expect and how to handle grief
(O leary Warland, 2013). Furthermore, there is very little information on Stillbirth experiences
especially about men who lose their child(Bonnette Broom, 2012). Experiencing the loss of a child
can be very difficult and often complicate grief which can affect parents social well being (Kersting
Wagner, 2012). In pregnancies that follows a loss such as perinatal loss, it has been found that parents
experience high levels of psychological distress, anxiety, depression and post traumatic stress. (O
leary Warland, 2013; Kersting Wagner, 2012)
Impact on parents
Parents develop an ongoing relationship with their unborn child throughout pregnancy stages. With
unexpected loss such as a stillborn, parents suddenly feel the event to be surreal. (Ryninks, Roberts
Collins, McKenzie McHarg, Horsch, 2014). Parents expressed that stillbirth would never happen to

The A Independent School District
Prosper, Texas is one of the last additions to Collin County and has a current population of over
12,000 residents (Minor, 2010). Prosper s establishment came about from the merging of two farming
settlements in 1902, however the city s name was not incorporated until 1914 ( History , n.d.; Minor,
2010). According to the city s webpage, Prosper is committed to being family oriented and providing
every resident an opportunity to experience quality living while maintaining small town ideals ( About
Prosper , n.d.). The Prosper Independent School District s (PISD) vision to reach everyone, everyday (
REACH Philosophy / REACH , 2002) mirrors the town s belief in including everyone. Despite the
exceptional growth within the city over the past few years, the school district is determined to meet
the needs of its student population. One way in which PISD plans to ensure all of its students receive
an equitable education, is through its adoption and implementation of the Response to Intervention
(RtI) program.
The Response to Intervention program came into existence as a result of various federal legislative
mandates. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) emphasized the responsibility of schools to
ensure academic progress from all students, including English language learners, students of lower
socioeconomic backgrounds, and those in special education (NCLB, 2001;) Then, In 2004, the

Mercury Athletic Footwear Case Study Essay
Mercury Athletic Footwear Case Study John Liedtke head of Active Gear, Inc. (AGI) is contemplating
whether to invest in Mercury Athletic a subsidiary of West Coast Fashions (WCF). Mercury was
purchased by WCF in hopes to increase business revenue however this was not the case. Business did
not do as expected, WCF was then eager to abandon its apparel. John Liedtke saw this as an
opportunity to take over Mercury and as result increase its business revenue. In order to determine
whether this is an essential business opportunity John needs to complete preliminary financial
valuations to make a solid decision. Active Gear s current income statements and balance sheets have
made it evident that the firm has a lot of potential for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In doing this John can clearly see whether processes are in control or out of control for example how
inventory changes affect finance costs and whether the investment is worth making. This also makes it
clear what financing options are more suitable in the long term and which ones would cause problems,
as a result avoid any surprises (Olley (2006). The discount rate of acquiring Mercury is also essential
to know. Since discount cash flow is a valuation method used to estimate investment opportunities. Its
purpose is to estimate money received from an investment and adjust for time value money (Harman
(2011). In this case a 12% forecast was estimated and reflected a positive factor toward PV and NPV.
There are however, some circumstances where discount cash flow can be a challenge for example, the
most prevailing is when cash flow projections increase for each year in the forecast. It is then assumed
that a company will mature in such a way that their maintainable growth rates will lean toward long
term rate of economic growth in the long run (Harman (2011). This intern becomes a challenge for the
company against unexpected risks. In consideration to Mercury s financial history and projections it
would be in the best interest for AGI to move forward and invest in Mercury. This would increase
revenue for AGI and bring in a new customer market. Prior to doing so John will need to perform a
financial forecast as previously discussed.

Existentialism In Mrs. Dalloway s Waiting For Godot
As a result of both World Wars, many who had been disillusioned by romanticized ideas of war were
shocked by the abrupt pain and loss they experienced. Due to the excruciating catastrophe of War,
people lost faith in religion and humanity and ultimately felt as though life lacked a meaningful
purpose. This pessimistic view of life brought upon the emergence of existentialism as a prominent
philosophical belief in society. Many Existentialists believed that our lives are ultimately meaningless
and that our existence is comprised entirely of our actions; we must acknowledge that our lives occur
while we are waiting for our inevitable deaths. Mrs. Dalloway and Waiting for Godot both exemplify
through their characters that human life and experiences are comprised of the small moments in which
we are collectively waiting for something. This idea of waiting for something is essential to the human
experience because many existentialists of the eras, in which these stories were written, ultimately
believe that a reality in which evils can occur, such as a World War, could not possibly have a caring
God and that our existence must be made up solely of the actions that are performed in the time spent
waiting, Becket would argue naively, for something to occur.
Mrs. Dalloway takes place in an England which was recovering from the ravishes of the first World
War. Following the war, many people began to lose faith in organized religion because they could not
fathom how an all loving and

Soluble In Methanol
When we tested the solubility of the starting materials, we found that all of our starting materials were
soluble in hexanes, ethyl acetate, and acetone, which makes sense because all of these solutions are
organic materials, so the starting materials should form London dispersion forces with them all, and
the reaction should occur. Enthalpy should not care about whether the reaction occurs or not because
either way it has London dispersion forces, but entropy would drive the reaction because it always
wants a more random orientation, as explained above when describing enthalpy, entropy, and free
energy. Interestingly, none of the starting materials were soluble in methanol. Methanol is an organic
solution and contains hydrogen bonding, so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The combination of oils and fats with alkali products creates soap lather. However, when friction is
applied to these molecules, more lathering occurs. The friction creates air pockets and the oil forms
around each pocket of air (Fredericks), creating more surface area. Soaps and detergents made from
avocado, coconut, and castor oil (vegetable oil) will produce more lather than those created from lard
and fat because they produce both fluffy (foamy) and stable (picks up dirt) lathers. This would explain
why the canola oil had the best latherability. Canola oil is a type of vegetable oil like castor oil, so it
should have more lather. Detergent 2 was very basic and it was made from fat, which is not as good at
lathering as oil, plus it creates a hard soap, which does not lather as well (Taylor). Table 4 depicts our

building strong brand recognition in Canada. Initially starting as a car parts retailer they have
expanded rapidly into other areas, mainly general merchandise retail. They have other secondary
divisions being; Partsource Automotive stores (strictly automotive parts), Financial Services, Mark s

This system causes many inefficiencies, both financial and non financial, for CTR in comparison to its
competitors (EXHIBIT CIBC REPORT). However, the dealer corporation model is as old as Canadian
Tire itself and extremely unlikely to change. Essentially the dealer is responsible for everything in
store, and the corporation takes care of the rest. A list of segregated responsibilities can be seen in
Exhibit Z.
Going Concern Canadian Tire Corporation is in good financial standing and extremely unlikely to
bankrupt in coming years. Currently CTC s debt to equity ratio is 0.242 below the industry average of
1.557, with a current ratio 0.614 above the industry average of 1.061. Addressing the debt to equity
shortfall, CTC has decreased its debt to equity from 1.897 to 1.739 between third quarters of 2012 and
2010. This is including the acquisition of FGL Sports Ltd. which spiked debt in 2011. (CITE
ANALYTICAL PROCEDURES) There is no issue of going concern.
Technology IT is centrally managed for each of CTC s specific divisions. Retail stores use software to
keep track of inventory and prices regarding items in stores. The stores then transmit this information
to make purchases from CTC. It is an integral part of their supply chain and retail operations. They are
continuing to upgrade these internally developed systems, which could pose a risk for exceptions.
These systems will require increased test of controls

Arguments For Raising Minimum Wage
Many people experience working minimum wage jobs. Even I have undergone working the tedious,
hard working jobs in which I felt the work and responsibility did not reflect my pay: $7.25. Me, as a
teenager, thought it was hard to manage on the $7.25 minimum wage, but imagine someone who is
working full time and supporting a family on minimum wage it seems impossible. In The New York
Times article, The Case for a Higher Minimum Wage, The Editorial Board argues that the federal
minimum wage of $7.25 should be raised because it could help those who are in need, increase the
productivity of minimum wage employees, and help the American economy; however, conservatives
hinder the process. The Editorial Board makes a strong case to raise the minimum wage to help many
Americans by giving many statistics and facts, and counterarguments, which makes the argument
tenable and plausible. Within the article, many statistics and facts are given to show that the minimum
wage needs to be increased to help many Americans economically. One fact is that approximately 27.8
million people would have a higher wage if the Democratic proposition of raising the minimum wage
from $7.25 to $10.10 ( The Case for a Higher Minimum Wage ). With this fact given in the article, it
shows that a huge number of people could be impacted positivity if the minimum wage were to
increase in the United States. If 27.8 million people receive a high wage, it could change their whole
livelihoods and how they raise

The Consequences Of Julius Jones And The Jonestown Massacre
All across America, television sets display nine hundred and nine dead bodies. These bodies, in
aluminum coffins, came over to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Tax payers were irate at possibly
having to pay for all the embalming and burial costs ( The Horror, 28). Embalming and burial costs
are expensive and many people lost sympathy for cult members. So, people opposed paying for the
consequences of the Jonestown massacre.
Jim Jones realized he was losing control over the People s Temple, leading to the Jonestown massacre.
Then in 1975, he uprooted his followers and isolated them in Jonestown, Guyana. Jones began
instructing his followers to commit a revolutionary suicide (Twemlow 224). The People s Temple s
actions concerned many family members and outsiders, which sparked Congressman Leo Ryan s
involvement. Congressman Leo Ryan and some reporters were on a mission to rescue Americans from
Jonestown. On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones was paranoid that his reign over Jonestown would
come crashing down when some of his followers went with Congressman Ryan. Jones used a mass
suicide to remain in control. Many people of Jonestown drank the poisonous Kool Aid. When people
resisted, Jones loyal followers injected hesitant followers with the poison. Jones ordered the murder of
Congressman Ryan and was responsible for the deaths of nine hundred and nine Americans. Jim Jones
constructed the Jonestown massacre by advertising false promises, instilling fear, and blackmailing his

My Experience At The Age Of Five
At the age of five, I experienced my first dentistry. As they d work on my teeth I would ask question
like What is that? , What does it do? This experience did not only trigger my career goal but made me
who I am. After my first experience I loved looking at people smile and going to the dentist every
month. I was bullied at the age of six for this very reason. As I grew older I developed three missions
in life. One, to finish school and earn my high school degree, two to start college , and three to earn
my degree and start working as a dentist. Soon these missions became goals. After I finished high
school I set new missions: one to start college, two to earn my Bachelor s degree and my doctoral
degree and three to get a good score on my Dental Acceptance test.
After I finished high school, I started to search for community college with dental classes. That s when
I heard of Tarrant County College (TCC) .I immediately ran to the school and applied as soon as
possible. After a month or so I got a letter allowing me to start college, as I read the words hope raised
up in my body. I asked my older sister Iftah, to help me get strategies for college because I was new to
the idea. During August, me and my sister Iftah created a strategy list. For me to be a dentist I first
need to complete a bachelor s degree. Getting a bachelor s required hard work and commitment.

The Concept Of Fashion And Fashion
The concept of style, pertaining to clothes and fashion is something embedded into our everyday lives.
While many pay no attention to it, and others simply fall into the category of those who not aware of
the importance it has in our everyday lives, this does not take away from its underlying and quiet
niche in our society. The way you chose to dress and the way you do this largely depends on your own
life. For example, an older, retired gentleman will have a different style and taste than a younger
teenager. Essentially, the concept of style comes down to three key components: the ability to practice
self expression, increasing self esteem, and dressing for success. Before we can understand the
concept that is style, it is important to understand another concept intertwined with style. This concept
is best expressed by the president of Well Said, Inc., Darlene Price, who says, Let s be clear: In the big
picture of ultimate reality, what you wear neither defines who you are as a person nor determines your
value as a human being. Essentially, the clothes and what a user chooses to wear is not what will

MINI CASE2 Benefits And Costs Uk Essay examples
MINI CASE 2: Will the United Kingdom Join the Euro Club?
When the euro was introduced in January 1999, the United Kingdom was conspicuously absent from
the list of European countries adopting the common currency. Although the previous Labor
government led by Prime Minister Tony Blair appeared to be receptive to the idea joining the euro
club, the current Tory government is clearly not in favor of adopting the euro and thus giving up
monetary sovereignty of the country. The public opinion is also divided on the issue.
Whether the United Kingdom will eventually join the euro club is a matter of considerable importance
for the future of European Union as well as that of the United Kingdom. The joining of the United

Besides, UK can attract many investor s from others because it has a plenty of advantages such as
abundant productive workforce, independence of the monetary and flexibility in labor market. Price
transparency is also a potential benefits for UK. There is a severe competition between local firms
about their price of goods. And it s absolutely a positive advantage for costumers in choosing goods
with a reasonable price. Some companies can minimize their production costs with a cheaper price of
their materials. Furthermore, UK can improve the inflation performance. In UK, CPI is allowed to
increase up to 3% but in Euro, its targeted inflation is close, but not more than 2%. The last but not
least, it is rising importance of Euro. Nowadays, Euro currency plays an important role in international
trade. And it can be able to replace dollar one day in period of globalization. Because there are more
and more other potential members participate in Euro club. Thus, this ensures that the Euro s economy
is much larger than US one. The instability of dollar and rising national debt in US also affect to dollar
currency.
About costs of adopting euro, initially UK has to face to the sensitivity of changes in interest rates.
Because house ownership in UK is the highest in Euro club, any changes in interest rates can rapidly
impact their economy. Secondly, adopting euro is constraint the

The Owner Of The Restaurant
Before leaving home for Rutgers, I was a fry cook at a burger restaurant. The usual pace was slightly
overwhelming and all my co workers had 2+ years of experience with the company. One night, about
two months after I started working there, it was so incredibly busy that the line of customers measured
out the door. As I frantically tossed food into hot grease, I fumbled with a box of jalapeño poppers and
dropped all of them on the floor. The cashiers, general manager and head cook all rolled their eyes at
me and shuffled past the mess. As I started to pick them up to throw them away, I noticed someone
else s hand helping. I looked up inquisitively and found Ralph Flannery s eyes, the owner of the
restaurant, who owned a handful of the same restaurant chain in several other locations. After we
cleaned up, he asked me to go to his office when things calmed down. I went to his office expecting to
turn in my name tag. Ralph looked calm and cheery, which put me at a wearisome ease. He started by
explaining how cheap and worthless a box of jalapeño poppers were to him. Then Ralph transitioned
to how expensive but valuable his employees were and finished by personalizing it with how
important I am to him and his company s success. I was left speechless because this was a new
experience to me. I sat there curious about what he had to say next. He said to me, Jacob, what if I
invest in you? Would you invest in me? How about I give you a fifty cent raise right now... I

Relationship Between Buyer And Buyer
There are two main types of buyer and seller relationships. The buyer is the person or organisation that
purchases products from suppliers. A buyer could be a manufacturer purchasing raw materials or a
customer buying a finished product from a retailer. The relationship between the buyer and seller can
be either short term (once off or low commitment purchases) or long term, involving regular purchases
based on established agreements. The success of a good buyer seller relationship is that they
understand each other and have a good fit . But who are the partners in the supply chain relationship??

That value can be based on services, quality, on time deliveries, returns management, or some
combination of these. It s what makes buyers increase their percentage of purchases from individual
suppliers for the long run. This provides a double edged benefit for suppliers: when a buyer increases
its purchase of a needed material or product or goods, this not only enhances the chosen supplier s
bottom line, but also negatively impacts the competition. Further, this increased collaboration between
supply chain buyer and seller leads to another valuable outcome: increased efficiencies. The Longer
the Collaboration, the Lower the Costs One of the greatest benefits from long term supply chain
collaboration (and one that consistently delights operationally oriented managers) are the cost savings
that result from routine procedures over the life of the relationship. When buyers and suppliers begin a
relationship, there interactions often are fraught with inefficiencies and expensive company legacy s ,
adding to the cost of doing business in year one. In year two, however, procedures typically become
more streamlined, issues in IT are worked through, and interpersonal relationships between
organizations become more

Accounting as a Professional School Essay
Accounting professionals are in very high demand. The nature of work in accounting is so vast an
individual would have so many different areas of accounting to choose from. Accounting requires
people who can work with complex business structures, computer systems, and financial analysis
packages. Accounting work further requires an aptitude for mathematics and the ability to compare
and analyze accounting data quickly. Accountants also need to have strong communication skills as
they must effectively communicate accounting data to their employers and/or clients. The accounting
profession also demands a high level of integrity and morality because the financial data prepared by
accountants is used by business managers to run their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the undergraduate degree, an accounting student would choose an exclusive area to

credit hours required in accounting to be eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accounting board

skills and abilities needed to be a successful CPA. After the theory portion of the educational
experience is completed, the most important aspect becomes practical experience. Practical experience
is what drives the market. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants requires that either a
one tier or two tier systems is required to obtain the CPA designation. This requires that relevant work
experience is needed to become certified. This hands on experience helps to position a potential
certified public accountant for a long and successful career. This professional curriculum is very
detailed and requires a lot of individual steps entailed to reach the point of designation. If it were made
into a professional school these segregated steps combined together would not only help to make
things simpler, but it would allow the accounting profession to be similar to the curriculums of
medicine, pharmacy and law. With an undergraduate degree, graduate theory and practice for four

The American Crocodile Essay
The American Crocodile

Crocodylus acutus, or more commonly referred to as the American crocodile, is the second most
widely distributed of the New World crocodiles, ranging from the southern tip of Florida, both the
Atlantic and Pacific Coasts of Southern Mexico, as well as the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Jamaica,
and Hispaniola¡¨ (1 Species). These areas provide the perfect climate for these endangered species that
have roamed the earth for over 200 million years. Florida is known for its large population of
American alligators, which are often confused for the rare American crocodile. However, there are

This Family is further divided into three subfamilies: Alligatorinae (alligators), Gavialinae (gharial),
and Crocodylinae (crocodiles).
Very often the American alligator (Alligatorinae mississippiensis) is confused for an American
crocodile, even though these two species are of the same family they are different in many ways. The
alligator has a much broader snout and the crocodile a much narrower snout ¡§¡Knarrower snouts
usually indicating fish eating species¡¨ (42). Another characteristic seen in the American crocodile and
not the alligator is the front two teeth that penetrate the upper jaw from below as they grow (2 List).
These teeth are one of the major differences between crocodiles and alligators.
A not so recognizable difference between the American crocodile and alligator is the crocodile¡¦s
ability to regulate saltwater balance in their body. Crocodiles maintain salt concentrations in their
body fluid at the typical level of other vertebrates, which is about one third that of seawater (52).
¡§The osmoregulatory problems posed by life in fresh or saline waters are related to the amounts of
water and salts exchanged across various body surfaces. Loss of salts and water occurs in feces and
urine, through respiration, excretion from salt glands in the tongue, and through the skin. The ability
of the American crocodile to tolerate salt water is related to their low rate of water loss, low rate of
sodium uptake, the ability to excrete excess

How To Operant Conditioning
A client is struggling with a compulsive habit that includes smoking more than three packs of
cigarettes a day. As a therapist you want to help them overcome the habit. To go about doing this,
there are two techniques you have available to you. The techniques are operant conditioning and
classical conditioning. Operant conditioning is a cause and effect relationship between a person s
behavior and the consequences. When a behavior is punished, it decreases; and when a behavior is
rewarded it increases. Classical conditioning involves a natural, unconditioned response that follows
an unconditioned stimulus, then a neutral stimulus becomes associated with the unconditioned
stimulus which then becomes the conditioned stimulus, finally the conditioned stimulus creates a
conditioned response. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The client s addiction was caused by operant conditioning because addiction is learned behavior.
Smoking cigarettes was enjoyable; therefore, the behavior is rewarded by that feeling and the behavior
continues. To treat the addiction with operant conditioning you need to reinforce not smoking with a
positive reward. As the therapist you could suggest to your client that when they do not smoke, they
should reward themselves with their favorite snack. On the other hand, when they do smoke they
should deny themselves the treat. To allow your client the greatest opportunity for success you should
also suggest that they should make a clear, daily or weekly plan with the rewards they will receive for
following through with not smoking. This works by replacing the good feelings that follow smoking
with good feelings that are rewarded for not

Social Medi The Truth
Social Media The Truth Social Media is a hotly debated topic in modern times. On one side, people
say that it can help spread information quickly, or help catch criminals, but on the other, people often
claim that they can be dangerous and that they lack privacy. The truth of the matter is, Social
Networks should be banned, especially for children. Social Media destroys the basic human ability to
interact with others. This is supported by the quote, Communication is constantly evolving. Some
people are as used to seeing their friends online avatar as they are their face, said Yazino founder
Hussein Chahine in The Telegraph. This shows how addicted people have become to Social

Future generations, this one included, will only spend more and more time on sites like these. Some
people would say that Social Media helps catch and prosecute criminals, but the few times in which
this does happen is heavily outweighed by the amount of privacy of which they lack, and the fact that
they often expose users to government and corporate intrusions. A 2012 survey found that 13 million
Facebook users said that they had not set or known about the site s privacy settings, and another 28%
shared all, or nearly all, of their posts publicly. Facebook is infamous for its lack of security, how it
forces users to stay on and use their site and secretly tracks them. They often make privacy settings
hard to find. Most, if not all, of their users would rather keep their info private, but Facebook and
other Social Networking sites often make that a hard thing to do. Another report declared that the US
Justice Department intercepted 1,661 pieces of information from social networking sites and emails in
2011. With many social media sites being money focused, they often sell their user s information to
shady organizations. These sites expose their users too much and too often. This is further supported
by the fact that the 2009 IRS training manual teaches agents to scan Facebook pages for information
that might assist in resolving a taxpayer case. Organizations such as this one now even promote social
media stalking . It s immensely difficult to stay and feel safe on

Short Note On Emma Lazarus
Emma Lazarus, a nineteenth century Jewish American poet, was born on July 22, 1849 in New York
City. Her parents, Moses and Esther Nathan Lazarus, had seven children. She was the fourth of the
seven to born, with five sisters and one brother. Emma was born into one of the oldest and most
prestigious Hebrew families in New York. The Nathan Lazarus family was descended from the early
Jewish settlers in America. By the time Emma was born, they had been established in Manhattan for
four generations. The Lazarus family, descended from Sephardic Jews, were wealthy, earning their
fortune in the sugar refining business. Being born into a wealthy family provided Emma with the
resources to acquire a strong, rich, and classical education. In 1866, at the age of seventeen, her poems
and translations were first published by her father, who was a very influential man at that time (Young,
1995). Two years later, she sent her writing to Ralph Waldo Emerson, a respected American poet and
literary essayist and lecturer of the 19th century. He was impressed by her work, and soon became her
mentor, and friend (Young, 1995). During her lifetime, he became a great resource of guidance and
motivation.
Emma Lazarus was a well known author during her lifetime. In 1874, she was recognized as an author
of note (Young, 1995). She published more than 50 poems in popular magazines, such as Lippincott s,
The Century, and The Critic. In 1871, she published a book of poetry called Admetus and Other

Gender Inequality Since The Beginning Of Time Mankind Has...

Gender Inequality In America Since the beginning of time mankind has been divided and categorized
based on gender. Starting from birth males and females are assigned roles based are expected to act
and adhere to stereotypes given to that sex. Only in recent times have either gender stepped outside of
the gender boundaries. However, despite the new sense of individuality society tries to restrict them to
gender archetypes. Males are expected to be masculine and females are expected to me feminine and
if either tries to be the other they are told its wrong. There is so much inequality in society today, even
beyond the binary gender . Transgender persons also experience inequality in equal parts as
cisgendered people. In most cases though when the topic of equality is brought up the conversation
transitions to feminism, almost ignoring transgender. Inequality equally affects everyone not just
females. Despite the inequalities genders face, improvement can be seen. Although there are
arguments that say there are areas in American society where there has been very little advancement,
there are some areas where there has been major increase in gender equality especially for women
rights, women in government, women in the medical field, and transgender equality. While gender
equality as a whole is improving greatly in America there are arguments that there has been little to no
improvement. The reasons

Hermann Hesse s Siddharth The Natural Motion Of A River
Emely Gonzalez
Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse
AP Literature Pd.3
Topic 3
The natural motion of a river can vary. For the majority of its existence, a river s effortless flow can be
tranquilizing; but it could also evoke destruction with its rushing dynamics. This double edge concept
is the simple layout of life, for we encounter high points, as well as low points. The river also holds
two principles: creation and destruction. The symbolic nature of the current enables Siddhartha, the
protagonist in the novel entitled Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, to use the river as a guide to
reconstruct himself. Within many episodes of his life, Siddhartha encounters the river and consumes
the teachings of it. In the process of finding himself, Siddhartha lost a part of his individuality.
However, he was able to regain his loss through the river s guidance; it was his savior. Siddhartha
desired to join the Samanas, with his best friend, Govinda to pursue enlightenment. When he told his
father, a Brahmin, his plan to do so, he rejected his request. Siddhartha was defiant, and stood still
with his arms crossed for several hours until his request was granted. Challenging his father s words
shows how he was accustomed to having everything in his favor. Once his knees grew weak,
Siddhartha s father gave in, allowing him to go into the forest and become a Samana. Upon joining the
wanderers , Siddhartha and Govinda abandoned the Samana life because it required one to lose

Narcissistic Behavior In The World Of The Kardashians

Like other things that have led to narcissism, parents meant well when they bought that princess shirt
for their daughter. I agree with the authors in that, It says a lot about our culture that people think a six
month old wearing a supermodel bib is cute (Twenge and Campbell 73). Despite how true this is, there

  • 2. Scott Fitzgerald s Use Of Metaphors In The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby Metaphors Metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics. F. Scott Fitzgerald uses metaphors to contribute to the novel s overall effect. The use of imagery helps the description of the metaphor. Metaphor and imagery contribute largely to Fitzgerald s style in The Great Gatsby. The three important metaphors that help contribute to the novel s overall effect are where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air (Fitzgerald 23), under Doctor Eckleburg s persistent stare. (Fitzgerald 24), and It had seemed as close as a star to the moon. (Fitzgerald 93). The metaphor where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air is important to the overall effect of the novel. • 3. Wind Power s Power to Create Electricity Essay Earth, as of today, is a world run by fuels and electricity. Every man, woman, and child is directly affect by them, whether it is by its consumption, uses, or price. One of the more recent sources for these fuels and electricity isn t actually very recent at all. Wind Energy, or Wind Power when it is being converted into a useful form of energy, has actually been around for thousands of years. It has been used to push ships, as natural ventilation, and to pump seawater.{Insert thesis Here} James Blyth was a Scottish scientist who created the first electricity generating windmill, which powered his vacation home in Marykirk, Scotland. Later, wind energy served mankind by energising his grain grinding mills and water pumps. During its transformation from these crude and heavy devices to today s efficient and sophisticated machines, the technology went through various phases of development....The earliest documented design of wind mill dates back to 200 B.C. The Persians used wind mills from grinding grains during this period. (Sathyajith Mathew 2) By the 14th Century, Windmills were being used as tools to drain the Rhine delta by the Dutch. In the 1900s, the massive amount of windmills in Denmark was producing roughly 30 Megawatts of electricity. That is roughly enough electricity to power a small to medium sized town. It is also enough to provide power to any one of these: 8,000 average homes, 400 fast food restaurants, 60 large retail stores, 50 grocery stores, 40 large home improvement stores, 2 Sears towers, 1 computer data center. The efficiency of a windmill, or the more modern wind turbine is one of the most critical factors of production. With some certain wind turbines, the efficiency can and may degrade slightly over time, but the time it takes for the production value to drop 10% is almost 20 years after the construction of that turbine, and even with that, not all turbines will degrade at that rate. Also, not all of the energy of the blowing wind is useable, because as the scientific law of the conservation of mass states that as much mass that enters the wind turbine must also exit ... If a stranger gives a candy and junk food to a child, the kid enjoys eating such foods even though they produce the harmful effects of rotting away at his teeth. With a parent to limit child s intake of such harmful sweets, however, the child is protected from their damage. Similarly, the American public enjoys viewing violent and abusive programs at the risk of adapting aggressive and unacceptable behaviors. Because the networks refuse to act as a mother and to limit the amount of violence shown on television, there are no restrictions to prevent television s violent candy from rotting away at the teeth of society. Such youngsters come to expect the violence in everyday life; they create it to be satisfied. Besides the fact that violence on television is able to be much more exciting and enthralling than it is viewed in reality, the children find the violent and the hostile behaviors of the characters in movies fun to imitate. They do imitate the models because the ideas shown on television are more attractive to the viewers. This factor has been widely seen with the advent of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Star Wars. Young children cannot seem to get enough of this fictional characters and portray them often. Or here is another example, after watching the movie Natural Born Killers, students in Columbine High School killed numbers of their classmates and teachers thinking that shooting was natural act to perform. Many other movies and shows as well as advertising on television do perform the examples of violence and physical abuse: slapping, hitting, biting, spitting, burning, and many other forms of physical aggressions that effect a young child s mind disrupting the learning abilities and upsetting the moral balance. The discount rate of acquiring Mercury is also essential to know. Since discount cash flow is a valuation method used to estimate investment opportunities. Its purpose is to estimate money received from an investment and adjust for time value money (Harman (2011). In this case a 12% forecast was estimated and reflected a positive factor toward PV and NPV. There are however, some circumstances where discount cash flow can be a challenge for example, the most prevailing is when cash flow projections increase for each year in the forecast. It is then assumed that a company will mature in such a way that their maintainable growth rates will lean toward long term rate of economic growth in the long run (Harman (2011). This intern becomes a challenge for the company against unexpected risks. In consideration to Mercury s financial history and projections it would be in the best interest for AGI to move forward and invest in Mercury. This would increase revenue for AGI and bring in a new customer market. Prior to doing so John will need to perform a financial forecast as previously discussed. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Existentialism In Mrs. Dalloway s Waiting For Godot As a result of both World Wars, many who had been disillusioned by romanticized ideas of war were shocked by the abrupt pain and loss they experienced. Due to the excruciating catastrophe of War, people lost faith in religion and humanity and ultimately felt as though life lacked a meaningful purpose. This pessimistic view of life brought upon the emergence of existentialism as a prominent philosophical belief in society. Many Existentialists believed that our lives are ultimately meaningless and that our existence is comprised entirely of our actions; we must acknowledge that our lives occur while we are waiting for our inevitable deaths. Mrs. Dalloway and Waiting for Godot both exemplify through their characters that human life and experiences are comprised of the small moments in which we are collectively waiting for something. This idea of waiting for something is essential to the human experience because many existentialists of the eras, in which these stories were written, ultimately believe that a reality in which evils can occur, such as a World War, could not possibly have a caring God and that our existence must be made up solely of the actions that are performed in the time spent waiting, Becket would argue naively, for something to occur. Mrs. Dalloway takes place in an England which was recovering from the ravishes of the first World War. Soluble In Methanol When we tested the solubility of the starting materials, we found that all of our starting materials were soluble in hexanes, ethyl acetate, and acetone, which makes sense because all of these solutions are organic materials, so the starting materials should form London dispersion forces with them all, and the reaction should occur. Enthalpy should not care about whether the reaction occurs or not because either way it has London dispersion forces, but entropy would drive the reaction because it always wants a more random orientation, as explained above when describing enthalpy, entropy, and free energy. The combination of oils and fats with alkali products creates soap lather. However, when friction is applied to these molecules, more lathering occurs. The friction creates air pockets and the oil forms around each pocket of air (Fredericks), creating more surface area. Soaps and detergents made from avocado, coconut, and castor oil (vegetable oil) will produce more lather than those created from lard and fat because they produce both fluffy (foamy) and stable (picks up dirt) lathers. This would explain why the canola oil had the best latherability. Canola oil is a type of vegetable oil like castor oil, so it should have more lather. In The New York Times article, The Case for a Higher Minimum Wage, The Editorial Board argues that the federal minimum wage of $7.25 should be raised because it could help those who are in need, increase the productivity of minimum wage employees, and help the American economy; however, conservatives hinder the process. The Editorial Board makes a strong case to raise the minimum wage to help many Americans by giving many statistics and facts, and counterarguments, which makes the argument tenable and plausible. These bodies, in aluminum coffins, came over to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. Tax payers were irate at possibly having to pay for all the embalming and burial costs ( The Horror, 28). Embalming and burial costs are expensive and many people lost sympathy for cult members. So, people opposed paying for the consequences of the Jonestown massacre. Jim Jones realized he was losing control over the People s Temple, leading to the Jonestown massacre. Then in 1975, he uprooted his followers and isolated them in Jonestown, Guyana. Jones began instructing his followers to commit a revolutionary suicide (Twemlow 224). The People s Temple s actions concerned many family members and outsiders, which sparked Congressman Leo Ryan s involvement. Congressman Leo Ryan and some reporters were on a mission to rescue Americans from Jonestown. On November 18, 1978, Jim Jones was paranoid that his reign over Jonestown would come crashing down when some of his followers went with Congressman Ryan. • 20. The Concept Of Fashion And Fashion The concept of style, pertaining to clothes and fashion is something embedded into our everyday lives. While many pay no attention to it, and others simply fall into the category of those who not aware of the importance it has in our everyday lives, this does not take away from its underlying and quiet niche in our society. The way you chose to dress and the way you do this largely depends on your own life. For example, an older, retired gentleman will have a different style and taste than a younger teenager. Essentially, the concept of style comes down to three key components: the ability to practice self expression, increasing self esteem, and dressing for success. Before we can understand the concept that is style, it is important to understand another concept intertwined with style. This concept is best expressed by the president of Well Said, Inc., Darlene Price, who says, Let s be clear: In the big picture of ultimate reality, what you wear neither defines who you are as a person nor determines your value as a human being. Essentially, the clothes and what a user chooses to wear is not what will define them, but it is rather the user who defines what they are wearing, as the person makes the clothes, and not vice versa. The reason behind this is many seem to forget that the user of the clothes must ultimately dress for themselves and do however they please with their style, and not attempt to conform to societal norms or to anyone that is attempting to pressure ... • 30. Social Medi The Truth Social Media The Truth Social Media is a hotly debated topic in modern times. On one side, people say that it can help spread information quickly, or help catch criminals, but on the other, people often claim that they can be dangerous and that they lack privacy. The truth of the matter is, Social Networks should be banned, especially for children. Social Media destroys the basic human ability to interact with others. This is supported by the quote, Communication is constantly evolving. Some people are as used to seeing their friends online avatar as they are their face, said Yazino founder Hussein Chahine in The Telegraph. Future generations, this one included, will only spend more and more time on sites like these. Some people would say that Social Media helps catch and prosecute criminals, but the few times in which this does happen is heavily outweighed by the amount of privacy of which they lack, and the fact that they often expose users to government and corporate intrusions. A 2012 survey found that 13 million Facebook users said that they had not set or known about the site s privacy settings, and another 28% shared all, or nearly all, of their posts publicly. Facebook is infamous for its lack of security, how it forces users to stay on and use their site and secretly tracks them. They often make privacy settings hard to find. Most, if not all, of their users would rather keep their info private, but Facebook and other Social Networking sites often make that a hard thing to do. Another report declared that the US Justice Department intercepted 1,661 pieces of information from social networking sites and emails in 2011. With many social media sites being money focused, they often sell their user s information to shady organizations. These sites expose their users too much and too often. This is further supported by the fact that the 2009 IRS training manual teaches agents to scan Facebook pages for information that might assist in resolving a taxpayer case. Organizations such as this one now even promote social media stalking . It s immensely difficult to stay and feel safe on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. Gender Inequality Since The Beginning Of Time Mankind Has... Marichelle Arnold Professor Lee March Political Science 1100 6 March 2015 Gender Inequality In America Since the beginning of time mankind has been divided and categorized based on gender. Starting from birth males and females are assigned roles based are expected to act and adhere to stereotypes given to that sex. Only in recent times have either gender stepped outside of the gender boundaries. However, despite the new sense of individuality society tries to restrict them to gender archetypes. Males are expected to be masculine and females are expected to me feminine and if either tries to be the other they are told its wrong. There is so much inequality in society today, even beyond the binary gender . Transgender persons also experience inequality in equal parts as cisgendered people. In most cases though when the topic of equality is brought up the conversation transitions to feminism, almost ignoring transgender. Inequality equally affects everyone not just females. Despite the inequalities genders face, improvement can be seen. Although there are arguments that say there are areas in American society where there has been very little advancement, there are some areas where there has been major increase in gender equality especially for women rights, women in government, women in the medical field, and transgender equality. While gender equality as a whole is improving greatly in America there are arguments that there has been little to no improvement. The reasons ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Hermann Hesse s Siddharth The Natural Motion Of A River Emely Gonzalez Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse AP Literature Pd.3 Topic 3 The natural motion of a river can vary. For the majority of its existence, a river s effortless flow can be tranquilizing; but it could also evoke destruction with its rushing dynamics. This double edge concept is the simple layout of life, for we encounter high points, as well as low points. The river also holds two principles: creation and destruction. The symbolic nature of the current enables Siddhartha, the protagonist in the novel entitled Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, to use the river as a guide to reconstruct himself. Within many episodes of his life, Siddhartha encounters the river and consumes the teachings of it. In the process of finding himself, Siddhartha lost a part of his individuality. However, he was able to regain his loss through the river s guidance; it was his savior. Siddhartha desired to join the Samanas, with his best friend, Govinda to pursue enlightenment. When he told his father, a Brahmin, his plan to do so, he rejected his request. Siddhartha was defiant, and stood still with his arms crossed for several hours until his request was granted. Challenging his father s words shows how he was accustomed to having everything in his favor. Once his knees grew weak, Siddhartha s father gave in, allowing him to go into the forest and become a Samana. Upon joining the wanderers , Siddhartha and Govinda abandoned the Samana life because it required one to lose ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
