Introduction:
This literature review will make use of four pieces of academic work to discuss how the concept of
culture can intrinsically affect leadership. The literature finds that the link between culture and
leadership is an important, yet complicated relationship. I will begin by discussing and defining
the central concepts of culture and leadership. I will then explain and analyse the significance of
culture upon leadership. Finally I will review Hofstede s cultural framework to assess its
significance and relevance to the topic at hand.
Culture:
To begin, culture is a phenomenon that carries multiple definitions. A simplistic view sees it as how

context they face (King and Lawley, 2013).
Hofstede s framework
Geert Hofstede believed that national cultures were potentially homogenous with organisational
cultures, and that national cultures could be quantitatively identified and compared (King and
Lawley, 2013). Hofstede over a four year period carried out 116,000 morale surveys, from 72
countries, using IBM subsidiaries (Kirkman, Lowe and Gibson, 2006) and from his findings
derived a four fold dimensional framework for measuring national cultures. His first dimension,
Power Distance, is the extent to which people within a nation are accepting of the unequal
distribution of power within institutions and organisations (Hofstede, 1980). This dimension also
helps to explain the way in which leaders and subordinates interact and under what pretences (King

say that it could not have been created by capitalism. Imperialism did, however, appeal to all
members of the ruling classes. It appeals to the prestige of the old elites and it is the source of

In the novel, Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson, a 67 year old man named Trond who lives in
solitude in Norway reflects back on the summer of 1948 where several significant events changed
his life. It follows his progression of growing up and starting to understand more about the people
and surroundings that revolve around his life and how they ve shaped him into becoming a mature
and wise man. Eventually, he realizes the truth that growing up is inevitable and accepts the fact
that things will never be the same again. In Out Stealing Horses, Petterson uses the motif and
imagery of water to show how Trond s familiarity and interactions with the river reflects his gradual
process of maturing from a innocent boyinto a stronger man. As a young boy, Trond s interactions
with water illustrates his innocence, showing his youthful behavior and preservation of
innocence. Growing up, water has played a huge role in Trond s life; He would often go out,
fishing for trout in the river (15) or riding logs down the river (15). These activities that Trond
engages in reflects Trond s close bond with the river and how it brought out his adventurous and
youthful behavior. The dynamic environment of the river and the never ending flow of water is
symbolic of Trond s constant energetic youth. As a kid, Trond was always outside admiring the

order to go out stealing horses, Trond had to row across the river (32), in which the river acted

in water up to my chin and remain the person I was (101). This highlights the idea that the river is
a comfort zone in which Trond is able to submerge himself in and stay youthful. Trond doesn t
want to grow out of his childhood and the river protects his innocence. Even with the current
pounding away and pulling at his body, (101) Trond felt untouched and remained the same person.

Race plays an important role in William Shakespeare s Othello: an intense tragedy of an admired
military general, who is driven to kill his wife and himself out of jealously. Othello is of Black
African descent, which separates him from many in his Venetian world. Throughout the play,
Othello s race is seen as a negative aspect of his character, which is used by the antagonist, Iago, as
a weak point to initiate chaos. The play depicts racismand uses the influence of radicalized
perspective to create a tragedy. Shakespeare created Othelloto be a great leader, a powerful and
noble man, to defy Venetian societal views. He did so effectively through the development of
varied interpersonal relationships, and how racism effects each of them.
When Othello is first introduced into the play, the audience knows that he is a well respected
leader. As the play continues, racist and non racist views become quite evident, which eventually
effect the actions and ways Othello sees himself. Othello s wife, Desdemona, is a young Caucasian
woman, who recognizes Othello for his true self, not his race. She admires the dangers that [he]
had passed (1.3.193. Shakespeare, William. Othello), and his abilities as a valiant leader.
Desdemona knows that her inter racial marriage is not common, or widely approved of, yet she
continues to trumpet to the world (1.3.285. Shakespeare, Othello) her love for him. Her
unwavering devotion to Othello is a critical detail because she stays true to her feelings in a world
where she is surrounded by discrimination towards Othello. Before Iago approaches Desdemona s
father, Brabantio, about their marriage, Othello expresses that [Desdemona s] father loved [him]
(1.3.149. Shakespeare, Othello), and often invited him into their home (1.3.149. Shakespeare,
Othello). These examples of characters from the play and their non racist views of Othello prove
that Othello is a play that illustrates racism, not a play meant to offend and segregate against

Throughout the Church history, details in which to interpret Scripture and the place of it, has
been debated among major groups for centuries. Three major groups that all read and interpret
scripture to a different standard are the Evangelicals, Liberals and the Neo Orthodox. Each group
holds the Scriptures sacred in their own way, but not everyone agrees to the others use. The first
group was the Liberals. The Liberals were by far the most unique of these three groups because

amp; Thompson Claims:What is claimed is: 1. A method of producing an organic fertilizer by
using fish, said method comprising the steps of preparing a raw material containing more than 80%
of fish heads, boiling the raw material to obtain a stock, removing solids and oil contents from the
stock to obtain stock liquid, thereafter treating the stock liquid in a decomposition tank with
decomposing enzyme for enzyme decomposition, filtering the enzyme decomposed stock... Show
Then, solids and oil contents are removed from the boiled stock to obtain a stock solution and
this stock solution is supplied to a decomposition tank to treat it by enzyme decomposition. In the
aforementioned enzyme decomposition step, enzyme decomposition may be carried out by
adding one or more than two protein decomposing enzyme, fat decomposing enzyme and the like
to the stock solution in the decomposition tank. A preferred decomposing enzyme used in the
decomposition tank is a bacterial protein decomposing enzyme, such as NEOVITALASE
SUPER (which is a trade name manufactured by Towa Koso in Japan). With the use of the
aforementioned enzyme, gelatin and protein are rapidly decomposed in the stock solution, and a
separation operation in a filter can easily be carried out. Enzyme decomposition in the
decomposition tank is carried out by increasing a temperature of the stock solution to about 50В°
60В° C., and keeping it for about 30 minutes to 3 hours, preferably 1 2 hours, and after
decomposition, the temperature is raised to higher than 95В° C. to deactivate the decomposing
enzyme. The stock solution enzyme decomposed as described above is separated into a solid
content and a liquid content and then the separated liquid content is filtered to form a clarified
liquid.
