Osmolarity Lab Report
To osmo regulate properly in a marine habitat, physiological mechanisms intended to conserve fresh
water and thus avoid dehydration are required. Marine mammals are well adapted to their hyper
osmotic environment. Their cells need to maintain both a water balance and an ion balance and life
depends on the maintenance of the transmembrane potential. The concentration of potassium ions is
higher in cells than on the extracellular fluid (ECF) and the concentration of sodium ions is higher in
the extracellular fluid.
Osmolarity is describes the total solute concentration. A condition in which the total number of solutes
(i.e. permeable and impermeable) in a solution is the same or equal to the total solutes in another
solution. If two solutions of similar osmolarity are separated by a semi permeable membrane, there is
no tendency for the solvent to move from one compartment to another. Hypo osmotic and hyper
osmotic solutions have a lower and higher osmolalities, respectively. Isotonicity, hypotonicity and
hypertonicity describe the effects of osmolality across a semipermeable membrane (Brooker, 2008). ...

Osmoconformers use diffusion to help regulate the concentration of water internally and externally.
Their cell walls are quite permeable, so when exposed to fresh water, they are exposed to a dilution of
their body fluids and this results in a loss of salts. Some have adapted to be able to withstand
temporary or even permanent dilution of the blood (McCarthy,

Observation Of Classroom Behavior
Observation Summary Essay Throughout my observations I saw many differences in both the
behavior level of the students, as well as the intellectual abilities of students. During my time I also
observed many successful teaching methods and only one unsuccessful one. Along with my
observations of the student s behavior and their intelligence levels, I also saw many of the
consistencies associated with what has been presented in our class. The behavior of the students is
what I saw the most difference in. The behavior of the students varied between all of the classes I
observed, but the freshmen class had significantly worse behavior than all the rest. The cognitive
abilities of the students I witnesses also varied by class, but not nearly as much as the behavior levels
did. To no surprise, the senior level class was by far the best behaved and the most intelligent;
however, the extent of their good behavior still astounded me. Throughout my observations I got to
see firsthand many of the ideas we discussed in class play out. I saw signs of increased likeliness to
engage in risky behavior, with the freshman class being the most likely to engage; however, one of the
8th grade classes also showed signs of their increased likeliness to engage in risky behavior. I also got
to see some of the seniors show themselves socially transitioning from middle adolescence into more
adult and late adolescent roles. The first class that I observed was an 8th grade math class. The

However finding a product that will be successful in the market is time consuming and a lot of hard

comes in a pack of 40 curves, which makes them ideal for sharing. Below is a picture of what a snap

Snaps product life cycle
I am now going to try to identify the product life cycle stage of
Cadburys snaps, I think that Cadburys snaps is in between two stages: the second stage of its product
life cycle, this stage is known as the growth and development stage and the third stage which is known
as the maturity and competition stage. This is because Snaps have now been launched in the market
and also it has been advertised through the television programme coronation street, this helps snaps to
be well known to the customers and potential customers. Because it is being advertised the product is
in the third stage of its product life cycle advertisement also increases competition in the market.
How snaps fit in to the Boston Matrix
I think that Cadburys snaps are cash cows in the market as the product is still new to the customers
and it will take time for the snaps to settle into the market

Female Marginality In The Catholic Church
As the society continues to strive for gender equality within the work force, there is neglect in one
specific component of culture: religion. Female marginality is very much prominent in the Catholic
Church. As women around the world strive to create a greater voice in corporation, there should also
be goals toward a greater feminine voice in Catholicism. Understanding female role in Catholicism
and analyzing prominent females in Catholicism enables women of the future to develop a greater
influence in the church. Women should seek for female advocacy in the Catholic Church by
examining female roles in Catholicism, exceptional women in Catholicism, and traditions of
Catholicism.
Understanding the definition of female marginality is important before being able to apply it to the
Catholic Church. Female marginality is defined as females who hold limited options or opinions on
any matter. Traditionally, women were defined as the caretaker of the household and children, limiting
women to domesticated duties while men held superiority in the work force. In the past, men
supported their families in terms of wealth while female roles were placed in occupations with

Marrying a wealthy man would have been the simplest way to relieve her family from such an
impoverish state. But in the process of doing so she would have loss her dignity as an independent
woman. In the past, a woman s appearance determined her role in society. If society considered a
woman attractive, just as Rosa was, she would be eligible for marrying into a wealthy family. Not only
did she reject the life as a wealthy housewife, she refused to enter the convent as a way to maintain her
virginity. Opting for chastity outside of the convent proves Rosa possessed the ability to remain chaste

Motifs In Never Cry Wolf
The movie Never Cry Wolf is a film concerned fundamentally with the conflict created when humans
experience nature and the wild. It begins with a young scientist, the protagonist who is placed in the
Arctic and preforms a scientific study involving wolves. While conducting his study he finds out
about the genuine way of the wild and about the way creatures that have a place in a given location fit
into the bigger plans of things. The conflict between man and nature is also revealed by the motif s,
themes, and the values shown by the character throughout the movie. One of the important motif s
expressed in the movie is the bassoon. Within one of the scenes of the movie the bassoon is used as a
weapon of protection. Tyler had learned a trick with his bassoon that gives him the ability to imitate
the howls of a wolf and being able to call other wolves. Another motif we are able to see in the movie
is a hero s adventure. There isn t anyone else willing to go to the Arctic like Tyler. He encountered
many situations such as drowning and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

actually going on in his surrounding. Unlike this century where many individuals are distracted by
technology. They re lacking experience in general and experience within nature. People nowadays go
on vacation and instead of having fun they re mainly on their phone. They re not getting the
experience they should be getting out of their vacation. Technology is taking a hold on us and
preventing humans from being alert. Unlike Tyler who was alert at most times and experiencing the
things that nature provides. Another theme showed in the movie is what is useful and what isn t useful.

1. Describe the basic features of electricity at a fundamental level.
Ans: Electricity is the movement of electrons. As long as electrons in an atom are balance and revolve
precisely in orbit around their sun or atom nucleus there is no electron flow or electric current in a
wire. These atoms are the smallest particle into which an element can be divided without losing its
property. A single atom consists of three basic components: a Proton, a Neutron and an Electron. An
atom is similar to a small solar system, so is the nucleus in the centre of an atom. Protons and neutrons
are contained within the nucleus. Electrons orbit around the nucleus which could be similar to planets
orbiting around the sun. As an electrician I will also be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Direct current may be obtained from alternating current supply by use of a current switching
arrangement called rectifier, which contains electronic elements or electromechanical elements that
allow current to flow only in one direction. DC maybe made into alternating current with an inverter
or a motor generator set. DC is commonly found in many low voltage applications especially where
these are powered by batteries, which can produce only Direct current or solar power systems, since
solar cells can produce only DC. Most automotive applications use DC although the alternator is an
AC device which uses a rectifier to produce DC. Many telephones connect to a twisted pair of wires,
and internally separate the AC component of the voltage between the two wires (the audio signal)
from the DC component of the voltage between the two wires caused to power the phone. Although
DC stands for direct current , DC often refers to constant polarity . Under this definition, DC often
voltages can vary in time, as seen in the raw output of a rectifier or the fluctuating voice signal on a
telephone.
5. Explain the effect of resistance in circuits.
Ans: Resistance is the hindrance to the flow of charge. An electron traveling through the wires and
loads of the external circuit encounter resistance for an electron, the journey from terminal to terminal

Janet Waking By John Crowe Ransom
The poem, Janet Waking , symbolizes a turning point in a child s life. It starts out with a young kid in
a slumber, and it ends with a mourning of a beloved pet. This shift that John Crowe Ransom creates
shows just how drastic this step in life was. Since the story is told from a father s point of view, we get
to look through a mature lense of how the child is impacted and just how young and undeveloped her
mind is. As the poem goes on, we finally see what message the author is trying to convey. Throughout
the poem, the poet carefully picks and constructs words and sentences that perfectly give the poem life
and meaning. Firstly, the name of the hen is Chucky. Chucky is most definitely not a common name
for a chicken, let alone for a hen.

Gender Double Standards For Children
Gender Double Standards for Children in Parenting
According to an analysis done by Seth Stephens Davidowitz, for every ten U.S. google search requests
about males being overweight, there are seventeen searches about girls being overweight, but in
reality, boys are nine percent more probable to being overweight than girls (Gonchar). There are
countless kinds of gender double standards in society, including the standards parents hold their
children to. It is no secret that parents dream for their daughters to be attractive and their sons to be
athletic. How else do these standards become apparent in a child s upbringing? In an investigative
paper, The Gender Double Standards in Parenting Attitudes, Meeso Caponi Ro, William G. Axinn, and
Linda Young DeMarco state, We differentiate dating, sex, and premarital cohabitation from marital
and childbearing behavior to investigate differences within the courtship and family formation
domain. (Axinn). There are different standards for boys and girls when it comes down to relationships
and sex as well. Parents tend to be more lenient when it comes to their boy s romantic relationships
and stricter with their daughters. A new study from Netmums reveals that 88 per cent of mums
admitted that they treated their sons and daughters differently despite thinking that this was wrong.

Sheep Heart Dissection
Sheep Heart Dissection Purpose: Sheep have a four chambered heart, just like humans. By studying
the anatomy of a sheep s heart, you can learn about how your own heart pumps blood through your

left atrium and ventricle on the right side of the diagram. Imagine the heart in the body of a person
facing you. The left side of their heart is on their left, but since you are facing them, it is on your right.
1. Identify the right and left sides of the heart. Look closely and on one side you will see a diagonal

Locate the mitral valve (or bicuspid valve) between the left atrium and ventricle. This will have two
flaps of membrane connected to papillary muscles by tendons. 4. Insert a probe into the aorta and
observe where it connects to the left ventricle. Make an incision up through the aorta and examine the
inside carefully for three small membranous pockets. These form the aortic semilunar valve which
prevents blood from flowing back into the left ventricle. Blood Flow Now consider all the parts you
ve found and how the blood flows through them. Draw a diagram of the heart and use red and blue
arrows to show the flow of blood: → deoxygenated blood (color blue) → oxygenated blood (color
red) Blood flows from the tissues → superior and inferior vena cava → right atrium → tricuspid valve
→ right ventricle → pulmonary semilunar valve → pulmonary artery → lungs → pulmonary veins →
left atrium → bicuspid (mitral) valve → left ventricle → aortic semilunar valve → aorta →body
tissue. Questions: 1. Describe the location of the heart in the thoracic cavity. 2. Why is the wall of the
left ventricle thicker than the wall of the right ventricle? 3. What type of tissue is the heart made of? 4.

The Impact Of Talent Management On The Workforce And...
Introduction
Talent Management is important to any organization. Baby boomers are nearing retirement age we
have a large number of people retiring each year and we need to plan for this so we can fill vacant
positions with the best talent. There is unprecedented generational diversity in the workforce and
globalization is changing the way we conduct business. And of particular concern to those of us in
higher education, the mobility of academics affects our college s workforce who we hire and the skills
they need. Because of these reasons it is more important than ever for us to embrace technology to
help us manage our talent.
Talent management tracks an employee s life cycle. A talent management system is often comprised of

Career planning allows an employee to chart a course for their career. A succession module can ensure
that the right people are hired for select jobs.
Trends in global economy bring the need for more efficient employee development and support for the
quickly changing workforce. According to Russell (2015) advances in technology have made it
possible for us to use technology to support and develop employees and to plan for the future. We now
have the capacity to store, collect and analyze large volumes of data. Recent developments regarding
how we understand and then link individual characteristics and performance are enabling a data
revolution in the area of talent management (Abstract ).
A talent management system can provide, store and analyze important information for our
organization. A talent management system is an important tool for any organization and we would be
smart to purchase one.
Recommendation
I recommend that we purchase a talent management system.
Justification
A talent management system provides the ability to share information and support. Technology can
make the talent management process more efficient and create transparency. Supervisors can access
information more quickly than with spreadsheets and other shared documents. A talent management
system keeps all the data in a single location. The data is available to other people in the organization

America And The Two World Wars
Andrew Iarocci and Jeffrey A. Keshen, A Nation in Conflict: Canada and the Two World Wars
(University of Toronto Press, 2015)
Andrew Iarocci and Jeffrey A. Keshen s A Nation in Conflict: Canada and the Two World Wars, gives
us an overview of Canada s contributions to the two World Wars and compares their work overseas
militarily, and the political and societal changes on the home front. The following will summarize
Iarocci and Keshen s book, and will end with a discussion and reflection on its strengths and
weaknesses.
The first chapter, Politics and Recruitment, outlines Canada s involvement in the two World Wars and
compares the different approaches to recruitment of Prime Minster Robert Laird Borden in the First
World War and that of Prime Minster William Lyon Mackenzie King s approach during the second.
The First World War came as a surprise to many Canadians. Throughout English Canada, Canadians
were enthusiastic for the fight and viewed the war as a way to preserve freedom from German
militarism. The patriotic duty of soldiers would demonstrate loyalty to secure a strong voice for
Canada in shaping imperial affairs. The Dominion of Canada entered the war with a small permanent
military force of about 3,000 soldiers and the war had relatively little impact on the daily lives of
Canadians. (7) By October 1914, the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) had 36,267 soldiers
overseas the largest military force ever to depart Canada. (10) With the war brought new legislation

these cases is to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

The number of mosquitoes increases with warmer temperatures and higher levels of rainfall, therefore
there would be a rise in dengue fever cases. This article argues that although basic practices play a role
in the outbreak, climate factors play an even greater role. The higher the temperatures the more likely
persons are to store water. These are ideal conditions for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. This study
showed that Caribbean Islands experienced an increase in the temperature by more than 0.5 degrees
during 1900 1955 (Environmental Management Authority, (n.d). Also, if society does not cooperate
with health personnel and take action starting with their immediate surroundings, then the efforts to
contain this virus will not be successful.
Reflection: This source is very helpful to me because it gives more than one view which I can use in
my research essay. This article helped shape my argument because it not only gave the basic
precautions for controlling the outbreak of dengue fever, it also stressed that the environment
contributes greatly to this problem. Overall, this article gave me a different view on the topic which I

Traumatic Brain Syndrome in Veterans
Issue: Traumatic Brain syndrome in veterans Introduction: Soldiers returning from combat face a wide
range of challenges in adjusting to civilian life. These challenges are compounded by the high
susceptibility of combat experienced soldiers to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and
overlapping symptoms of traumatic brain syndrome. As the two articles considered hereafter
demonstrate, the U.S. military has sought better ways of understanding the primary symptoms and
health consequences of traumatic brain syndrome with an interest in driving better outreach and
treatment. The discussion will address the value of both articles in contributing to this aim. Two
Quantitative Studies: The first study due for consideration is that by Truedau et al, published in The

aforementioned overlap between sufferers of PTSD and sufferers of traumatic brain injury in order to
determine accurate ways of screening for the latter of these conditions. The study presents a
quantitative assessment of specific medical screening results in order to produce an empirically sound
mode of predicting some of the negative repercussions of untreated traumatic brain injury. According
to Trudeau et al (1998), combat veterans with a remote history of blast injury have persistent

Analysis Of The Movie Osage County
This film August: Osage County tells a story about the women of Weston and how their lives flipped
outside down with a family crisis. In Lieu of an untimely death it brings all of them together under one
roof, where they are forced to face some unwanted truths. The film depicts the effects of prescription
pill abuse on a family unit and the ways that each individual character copes contributes to the family
system.
Characters and Family Roles
Violet Weston is the mother of the Weston girls. Violet plays the role of the addict in this family. She
exhibits erratic, irresponsible, anger and abusive behaviors towards her daughters throughout the film.
Violet has a tendency to play the victim when addressed about her usage of prescription pills. Violet
will use when others aren t around but her behaviors once overly medicated are apparent that she has a
legitimate problem with drugs. Violet has no issues with telling one how it is without any regard to
their feelings about what she is say. Violet demonstrates poor communication with her daughters as a
result of her usage of prescription pills. As the film progresses, it illustrates how severe Violet s
problem is when he daughters find out she several doctors providing her refills on the pills she was

Analysis Of The Film Sing Street
Finding fulfillment in life requires people to truly understand their reality and is only achieved through
an effort to grow out of one s comfort zone. This idea is explored in the film Sing Street, directed by
Jim Carney. The film follows the journey of Conor Lawlor, a shy schoolboy who gets moved from a
private school into a strict Catholic school due to his parent s financial situation. At Syng Street he is
bullied by another student and his principle. A turning point occurs when he falls in love with a
mysterious girl. After a desperate attempt to gain her phone number, he starts a band with a group of
outcasts from his school. Throughout the film, Carney suggests the idea that to fulfill one s happiness,
a person needs to make an effort to take a risk and push beyond their comfort zone, and while doing so
they also need to gain a sense of confidence in their identity. It is necessary to grow beyond hindering
beliefs to achieve a new perspective on life to lead to happiness. In the beginning, Carney
demonstrates that a person who is anchored by demotivating beliefs can ultimately compromise their
happiness. This is seen in the establishing shot where Conor is in his room and his parents can be
overheard arguing about their mortgage and their distaste for each other. Conor is unable to focus on
his romantic lyrics instead he sings their conversation out loud. This scene reveals that Conor is
negatively impacted because the only topic that is on his mind is the issue of

Why Is Summer Homework Essay
Argument Essay
Have you ever wondered why we have summer homework when we should be having fun during our
summer break? Every year when we get out of school we come home with more homework to help us
try to not forget what we learned in the past year. What if I told you summer homework could be
harmful to us. It could be and here s why. There s not enough book to choose from, never learned the
work, and it stresses everyone out. So summer homework may need to be rethought.
We all know the feeling when you pick up a book and can t put it down. Sometimes that s not the case
with summer reading books. Your assigned with a book or two that you have to read and do a report
on. Sometimes you love it, sometimes you don t. If you love it great, you can easily finish it and do a
book report on it. But what if you don t like it? Well either way you still have to read it. But if you don
t like it it s a dread to go on. If you don t like it you won t pay attention as much and might get lost and

Bed Room Asthma
Experts agree that our keeping our bedroom as free as possible from allergens makes a huge difference
in the quality of life for asthma and allergy sufferers. There are several steps one can take to reduce
the allergens in the bedroom. First, if possible, avoid carpet and rugs. This is not always possible,
especially if you are renting. If you cannot remove the carpet, then vacuum daily with a hepa filtered
vacuum (change filter often), paying close attention to areas behind and under furniture, and have
carpets professionally cleaned every three months. Use only curtains that can be machine washed, and

eye. The bedroom could certainly lost everything that is related to work or school no stacks of to do

Investigating the Relationship Between Superstious Belief...
In times of uncontrollability, there is evidence to suggest that individuals tend to invoke superstious
beliefs. Anecdotal evidence has also suggested that highly superstitious people believe that they have a
level of control over situations where they objectively have none. For example, some people have
lucky charms that they believe allow for a greater sense of perceived control of external factors.
Locus of control has often been used to explain the relationship of perceived control and superstious
belief and has been dichotomized as internal or external (Rotter, 1966). Whereas an internal locus of
control is inherent of the belief that all events are due to internal dispositions, an external locus of
control believes that events are a result of other people, or chance/luck. This concept is associated with
the Learned helplessness explanation (Abramson et al., 1978; Maier Seligman, 1976). What this
explanation proposes is that participant s attribute the uncontrollability of a situation to internal
dispositions i.e., they display an internal locus of control, and, by extension, denote failure as a result
of not having any control over the situation. Contrastingly, individuals who don t succumb to the
learned helplessness effect are those who place failure outside the realms of their own self. I.e., they
present an external locus of control. This has been validated by Dudley (1999), who found that
participants with a higher level of superstition demonstrated less of

Criminal Activity Vs Terrorist Activity
Criminal activity and terrorist activity have a relationship that is closely related, with only minor
differences separating the two. Terrorist activity are criminal acts that are motivated by a higher cause
beyond the basic causes of crime. Terrorist attack are highly planned out, and the same can be said
about criminal activity. Serial killers often plan out their acts just as much as terrorist organizations,
however the same cannot be said for certain crimes like random assaults. (Newman Clarke, 2008) The
relationship between crime and terrorism is brought closer when terrorist organizations use common
crime to fund their attacks. For example, a terrorist organization may resort to stealing chemical
agents to make their dirty bombs. The

U.S. corporate entities who ravaged the nation s resources and wealth, subjugated its working class
and suppressed its people through a dictatorial government under American protection. For example
consider the power and influence of the American Fruit Company in Central and South America
established and operated for decades at the cost of tens of thousands lives of innocent citizens whose
only crime was to have control over their own land and national resources. The history is well
illustrative of the American direct or indirect and often bloody suppression in countries such as
Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Vietnam,
Indonesia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Iraq. In some of these countries the
U.S. military operation had amounted to the level of genocide such as Vietnam where 2 to 4 million
human lives were destroyed including total population of many villages; Indonesia, where by the help
of the U.S. government the socialist government of Sukarno was overthrown and replaced by that of
Suharto who slaughtered about

How Did Heinrich Himmler Influence Hitler
The best political weapon is the weapon of terror. Cruelty commands respect. Men may hate us. But,
we don t ask for their love; only for their fear (Rivas 162). The speaker of this horrific statement,
Heinrich Himmler, Hitler s right hand man and trusted friend, would eventually become one of the
worst men the world ever encountered during the absolute tragedy of World War II. His control over
the SS and the Gestapo as the political enforcement in Germany, led to some of the horrendous acts
Himmler committed. He also organized the numerous concentration camps and death camps created
during World War II that left Nazi Germany responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews and other
minorities. Heinrich Himmler played a major role in the events ... Show more content on

Himmler first assisted Adolf Hitler as the Nazi leader of propaganda, and as he held this title he
organized Operation Himmler. Operation Himmler created the appearance of Polish aggression against
Germany when the Nazis wanted to justify their attack on Poland. Without Himmler s help with the
operation, the citizens of Nazi Germany would never accept the invasion of Poland so willingly.
Himmler also felt strongly about the idea of the supreme Aryan race. Because of Himmler s desire to
spread this idea, he eventually decided to only allow people with proof of Aryan ancestry into the
ranks of the SS. Some may consider Himmler s organization of the Nazi concentration camps and
death camps his most significant action throughout the course of World War II and the Holocaust.
Some people claim that approximately five million innocents lost their lives to the concentration
camps and death camps and believe that the creation of these camps exemplifies the true heartlessness
of the Nazis. Eleanor Ayer, the author of Parallel Journeys, speaks of one of the Nazi death camps
when she says, By the end of the war, nearly two million people would perish in this hellhole called
Auschwitz (Ayer 51). The camps and the numerous other matters that Himmler accomplished changed
millions of lives and will forever remain as an integral part

Manor And Feudal System Essay
The manor and feudal system during the middle ages shaped the society of Western Europe because it
both allowed protection to the serfs (peasants/ workers) from attacking tribes and barbarians as well as
gave nobility power and control of society. The manor system consisted of a large plot of land given to
a vassal by a king or a lord. A vassal was a deputy of the lord and was responsible for making sure that
the work on the manor was getting done. He got his manor from a feudal contract that was called the
fief which was a pledge to a lord or king that he would be their vassal for life. In exchange for this
promise, the vassal got protection from his enemies for life as well as an estate. On the manor there
was a manor house where the vassal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The serfs would work on large manors or on smaller villages guarded by knights and would provide
food for the rest of the hierarchy. This was a mutual respect system in which land and protection was
given down the hierarchy and goods and services such as food and tax money was given up. During
the middle ages there were many threats from barbarian tribes most notably the vikings and some of
the Germanic tribes that prompted the creation of feudal systems and the manor. While this protected
the serfs and other people who other wise would not be able to defend themselves, this also gave
power the nobility and allowed them to heavily tax the lower class. In addition to corruption, this gave
the upper class and the nobility far more control over the people of the kingdoms and could have also
caused many of the problems during the middle ages. Feudalism only really worked if the respect and
service went both ways which only worked if the nobility respected the serfs and vise versa. As a
result of this, feudal and manor systems shaped Western European society because the gave protection
to the lower class while giving more power and control to the upper

Essay The Authorial Voice
Writing from the soul about one s own life experiences can take on a much different feeling than any
other style of writing. There is an intrinsic, gut churning feel of risk within the process of telling the
truth. A risk that gives a certain adrenaline rush, all while allowing one to reflect. The adventure of
sharing ones own story can feel scary and relieving, both chaining and freeing. Harriet Jacobs and
John Edgar Wideman undergo this while telling their stories, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
(Jacobs) and Our Time (Wideman). Each author is self conscious throughout their stories. Both
authors speak about a minority in their stories; Jacobs speaks of the female slave and Wideman speaks
of the African American gangster. Because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But Jacobs is not only making this point clear to the reader; she is making it clear to herself. In writing
her story, Jacobs comes to terms with herself.
Wideman, similar to Jacobs, employs the use of questioning the reader. While struggling with the
issue of telling his brother s story without making it his own, he asks the reader a string of numerous
questions:
And if I did learn to listen, wouldn t there be a point at which I d have to take over the telling? Wasn t
there something fundamental in my writing, in my capacity to function that depended on flight, on
escape? Wasn t another person s skin a hiding place, a place to work out anxiety, to face threats too
intimidating to handle in any other fashion? Wasn t writing about people a way of exploiting them?
(Wideman 709).
Wideman, who seems uncomfortable with his relationship between his brother, the text, and himself,
makes his problems obvious. He does this in order to make the reader s ask themselves the same
questions then put themselves in his place. This bombardment of questions delivers the reader into a
state of confusion and frustration similar to that of Wideman.
The questions in this case, are an extremely effective rhetorical method because the answer is split,
and makes the reader feel the same conflict that the writer struggles with. While it is inevitable that the
story, being a product of the Wideman, must incorporate Wideman himself, his

Kant s Claim That Good Will Is The Only Intrinsic Good
Katie Russell Jennifer Thorington PHIL1320.040 11/19/15 Kant ethics As it is a stated fact, Kant s
claim is that good will is the only intrinsic good. Now, what exactly does Kant mean by this claim that
he makes? I think that it is important to mention what good will is. So, good will has two parts, one is
the ability to determine what your duty is and two is have a steady commitment to do your duty for its
own sake. Intrinsic goods are those things that whose value consists in the fact that they help to bring
about other good things. So what exactly does Kant mean when he says that good will is the only
intrinsic good? Basically it boils down to this, you have to have the right intentions when doing
something and obey the moral law and in those things are where you find what is intrinsically good.
We can be doing the right thing according to what we believe is morally right but at the same time it
doesn t have to be good will. For example, I could think that I m doing the right thing of tearing down
homes to better a community but that s not actually my duty, so therefore it s not a good will. On

only rational people. Categorical imperatives are commands of reason that do not depend on a person

first categorical imperative says, act only in accordance with that maxim through which you can at the

Importance Of School Dress Codes
How School Dress Codes are Detrimental to Girls.
In many American middle and high schools, there are rules on how you must dress. The most known
of these are that boys must wear shirts and must not show their underwear, and girls must have shorts
or skirts be fingertip length, not show shoulders or bra straps, and not show too much cleavage. The
rules vary by school, but most of these rules are geared towards young women. College and real life
do not have dress codes. Employers have dress codes so that their employees can convey to customers
what the business wants them too, but dress codes in public high schools are sexist and teach young
women that their education is less valuable than that of a man s. Firstly, most school dress codes are
aimed at girls. According to the dress code of my alma mater, Lakota West High School, there are
twelve items of clothing that are not allowed that are directed towards girls, and only 3 that are
specific to boys. There are more that are unisex, but I have singled out the ones that are gender
specific. Why are girls the ones who are more restricted by the dress code? Imagine you are a young
man getting ready for school in the morning. If your outfit doesn t have oversized armholes, dog
collars/spikes, or drug or alcohol related messages, congratulations! You re ready for school. Now, if
you re a young woman getting ready for school, your outfit must not show your bra straps, have
sleeves that cover your entire shoulder, and not have oversized armholes. Your shorts or skirt cannot
be past your fingertips, which for some girls with long arms means wearing jeans even in 90 degree
weather. Your jewelry and piercings must not be potentially harmful (it is up to the staff to dictate
what is and what s not), and your hair and makeup must not disrupt the educational process. (Again, it
is the job of the staff to decide what is disruptive, there are no set guidelines.) It s a lot harder to get
ready for school as a girl, which just adds more stress to get ready in the morning, and gives them one
other thing to worry about besides schoolwork. The reasoning I ve often heard behind makeup and not
showing shoulders for girls is to not distract other students. Since most

Science As Falsification By Karl Popper
For this week reading, I had the pleasure to read from the authors Karl Popper, Edward O. Wilson, and
Vandana Shiva. Karl Popper, philosopher and author of Science as Falsification, believed the scientific
method was made to seem quite easy to be placed yet mistaken due to claims of palm reading or
astrology making a status in the field of science. Karl Popper says, There was a lot of popular
nonsense talked about these theories, and especially about relativity (as still happens even today)...

How The Body Works Is Incredibly Complex
The way our body works is incredibly complex, but a wonderful thing that we are given. Without
everything working it would be hard to do simple tasks. When certain things do shut down or stop
working properly it can ruin a life. The littlest of organs can have an enormous effect on the body
which it did on me. The thyroid a small organ on the front of your neck gave me some serious
problems for about 2 years. From little things like sleep, appetite, and headaches it quickly scaled to
many more major things like heart palpations and severe dehydration. It may seem like something
very useless in the body, but I will never forget what it caused, and how hard it was to overcome it.
That little organ did way more than it probably knew it could do which was giving me a completely
different outlook of life itself.
How could one simple thing do that to my entire body. I would ask later on when I finally figured out
who the culprit of my sickness was. That thyroid caused many problems around the ages of 14 16. The
first sign of this takes me back all the way to eighth grade where I was just incredibly tired. I felt
absolutely horrible physically I couldn t get out of bed, and it was hard to do some simple tasks like
walking. I would be out of school for two days when my mother who thought it was the flu that was
affecting eventually made an appointment for the doctor to get whatever was causing me to be this
sick figured out, so I could be back to shape. My mother and I went to

the study, using the five categories associated with the Health Belief Model, themes emerged related
to perceived barriers, perceived benefits, perceived severity, cue to actions and self efficacy (O

results indicate that participants with high ADHD related quality of life and daily adherence indicated

Juvenile Gangs

possible victims of the juvenile, but it could also help identify the best treatment for the offender.
Juvenile Gang Members and Social Media Many juveniles that end up on probation come from low
income families that live in bad neighborhoods. Many gangs are formed in bad neighborhoods, and
juveniles are more exposed to gangs. Juveniles usually end up joining gangs because it gives them the
comfort, and attention that they might not getting at home. Joining a gang is usually what influences a
juvenile to commit a crime, and getting into trouble. A juvenile in a gang who is caught committing a

The digital divide is a term used for to describe the growing distance between those with access to
information and those who don t have the access. We would be a perfect example of the digital divide.
What makes us a perfect example would be your lack of access to the internet and electronic devices
like smartphone, computers, and the internet and how I have access to all of that information at the
touch of my fingers. One aspect of the digital divide is the speed in which people can access
information. The difference between high speed internet and dialup can have a major impact on
staying informed. One way we are trying to bridge the digital divided is by trying to increase access to

What Do The Oil Numbers
What do the oil numbers 10W 30 mean? Your engines rotating parts are protected from heat and
friction by a thin layer of oil. We have seen the numbers on the oil bottles and read what the
manufacturers recommend for the oil but, how were those numbers derived? The increase in
technology has changed the way it was measured, but the numbers have stayed consistent so as not to
make consumers learn a new system, or have the oil manufacturers feel obligated to list both the old
numbers and the new numbers on the labels. Multi grade oils are the best of both worlds and this
accomplished by using additives to increase viscosity with the increase temperature. There are many
types of lubricants, just make sure that you are using engine oil, and the engine oil for your type of

1866, Medical Doctor John Ellis was trying to determine if there were any medicinal properties of
crude oil. He did not find any medical properties, but realized that there were potentials in lubrication
for steam engines. At that time, lubrication was mainly animal or vegetable fat, and that has started to
come back around full circle, but has potential since new technology for refining those fats into a
more usable lubrication. He then founded the Predecessor to Valvoline oil, Continuous Oil Refining
Company and put his medical practice on hold indefinitely. He patented several refining methods

The Disadvantages Of Artifice

are guided by false veneers and deceit. Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic used in hope of
gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to utilize artifice on a

their advantage. Chris Hedges believes that the use of artifice is a necessary device to achieve success.
In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the appeal of artifice and how individuals become
unreal and ignored if they do not utilize it. His viewpoint is immensely untrue because this strategy
causes a never ending cycle of conflict. If we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become
unable to fix societal issues we face to today. The celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as
people we should look up to and let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across and
trustworthy and generous, when in reality they are just the opposite. One serious problem has surfaced
this year regarding the sexual harassment of actresses in Hollywood. Producers, directors, and other

Racial Identity And Race And Ethnicity
Daily, people in America are categorized by their physical characteristics, lumped together as one
group, and labelled with a race. Most assume that race and ethnicity have virtually the same definition
and use the two terms interchangeably; however, ethnicity and race are two extremely diverse
concepts that are frequently misconstrued by the general public. Race is the idea that people who look
similar share similar backgrounds; however, genetically, this is not always the case. More accurately,
ethnicity acknowledges both where a person comes from and their beliefs, practices, and cultural
aspects (INSERT book CITATION).
By what people typically think and classify others as, I would be seen as white. Obviously, this is my
racial identity and not my ethnicity. If someone was to ask me what my ethnicity is, I could not give a
simple answer. Through generations, my ethnicity is rooted in several different cultures, specifically
Irish, Scottish, English, German, and Jewish. Out of the five, I most strongly identify with my German
heritage. Without asking me, though, some people would never know from which countries my
ancestors came to the United States.
Up until a few years ago, I was not even aware that my German ethnicity was the most prominent of
my ethnicities, even though Germans make up the majority of non Hispanic European descents, I
could have never guessed that I was predominately Germanic. (book citation). My father actually

  • 2. Osmolarity Lab Report To osmo regulate properly in a marine habitat, physiological mechanisms intended to conserve fresh water and thus avoid dehydration are required. Marine mammals are well adapted to their hyper osmotic environment. Their cells need to maintain both a water balance and an ion balance and life depends on the maintenance of the transmembrane potential. The concentration of potassium ions is higher in cells than on the extracellular fluid (ECF) and the concentration of sodium ions is higher in the extracellular fluid. Osmolarity is describes the total solute concentration. A condition in which the total number of solutes (i.e. permeable and impermeable) in a solution is the same or equal to the total solutes in another solution. If two solutions of similar osmolarity are separated by a semi permeable membrane, there is no tendency for the solvent to move from one compartment to another. Hypo osmotic and hyper osmotic solutions have a lower and higher osmolalities, respectively. Isotonicity, hypotonicity and hypertonicity describe the effects of osmolality across a semipermeable membrane (Brooker, 2008). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Osmoconformers use diffusion to help regulate the concentration of water internally and externally. Their cell walls are quite permeable, so when exposed to fresh water, they are exposed to a dilution of their body fluids and this results in a loss of salts. Some have adapted to be able to withstand temporary or even permanent dilution of the blood (McCarthy, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Observation Of Classroom Behavior Observation Summary Essay Throughout my observations I saw many differences in both the behavior level of the students, as well as the intellectual abilities of students. During my time I also observed many successful teaching methods and only one unsuccessful one. Along with my observations of the student s behavior and their intelligence levels, I also saw many of the consistencies associated with what has been presented in our class. The behavior of the students is what I saw the most difference in. The behavior of the students varied between all of the classes I observed, but the freshmen class had significantly worse behavior than all the rest. The cognitive abilities of the students I witnesses also varied by class, but not nearly as much as the behavior levels did. To no surprise, the senior level class was by far the best behaved and the most intelligent; however, the extent of their good behavior still astounded me. Throughout my observations I got to see firsthand many of the ideas we discussed in class play out. I saw signs of increased likeliness to engage in risky behavior, with the freshman class being the most likely to engage; however, one of the 8th grade classes also showed signs of their increased likeliness to engage in risky behavior. I also got to see some of the seniors show themselves socially transitioning from middle adolescence into more adult and late adolescent roles. The first class that I observed was an 8th grade math class. The behavior ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

C6: An understanding of the importance of New product development to An organisation. To keep customers loyal to the business Cadbury introduce new products to the market as this helps, to increase both competition and keep customers interested in Cadbury products. However finding a product that will be successful in the market is time consuming and a lot of hard work, and it is a big risk for not just Cadbury but any business launching a brand new product to the customers. The reasons for why Cadbury decide to develop a new product could be for the following reasons: Changes in the customer s lifestyles: This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recently (20th September 2004) Cadbury have launched a new product called Snaps this is obviously a chocolate product shaped like a crisp (curves) with crispy cereal pieces in there that make the product crunchy. Snaps come in three different flavours: Milk chocolate, Hazelnut, and orange snaps comes in a pack of 40 curves, which makes them ideal for sharing. Below is a picture of what a snap looks like. Cadbury Hazelnut SnapCadbury Milk Chocolate SnapCadbury Orange Snap Snaps product life cycle I am now going to try to identify the product life cycle stage of Cadburys snaps, I think that Cadburys snaps is in between two stages: the second stage of its product life cycle, this stage is known as the growth and development stage and the third stage which is known as the maturity and competition stage. This is because Snaps have now been launched in the market and also it has been advertised through the television programme coronation street, this helps snaps to be well known to the customers and potential customers. Because it is being advertised the product is in the third stage of its product life cycle advertisement also increases competition in the market. How snaps fit in to the Boston Matrix I think that Cadburys snaps are cash cows in the market as the product is still new to the customers and it will take time for the snaps to settle into the market ... Female marginality is very much prominent in the Catholic Church. As women around the world strive to create a greater voice in corporation, there should also be goals toward a greater feminine voice in Catholicism. Understanding female role in Catholicism and analyzing prominent females in Catholicism enables women of the future to develop a greater influence in the church. Women should seek for female advocacy in the Catholic Church by examining female roles in Catholicism, exceptional women in Catholicism, and traditions of Catholicism. It begins with a young scientist, the protagonist who is placed in the Arctic and preforms a scientific study involving wolves. While conducting his study he finds out about the genuine way of the wild and about the way creatures that have a place in a given location fit into the bigger plans of things. One of the important motif s expressed in the movie is the bassoon. Within one of the scenes of the movie the bassoon is used as a weapon of protection. Tyler had learned a trick with his bassoon that gives him the ability to imitate the howls of a wolf and being able to call other wolves. As long as electrons in an atom are balance and revolve precisely in orbit around their sun or atom nucleus there is no electron flow or electric current in a wire. These atoms are the smallest particle into which an element can be divided without losing its property. A single atom consists of three basic components: a Proton, a Neutron and an Electron. Direct current may be obtained from alternating current supply by use of a current switching arrangement called rectifier, which contains electronic elements or electromechanical elements that allow current to flow only in one direction. DC maybe made into alternating current with an inverter or a motor generator set. DC is commonly found in many low voltage applications especially where these are powered by batteries, which can produce only Direct current or solar power systems, since solar cells can produce only DC. Most automotive applications use DC although the alternator is an AC device which uses a rectifier to produce DC. Many telephones connect to a twisted pair of wires, and internally separate the AC component of the voltage between the two wires (the audio signal) from the DC component of the voltage between the two wires caused to power the phone. Although DC stands for direct current , DC often refers to constant polarity . Under this definition, DC often voltages can vary in time, as seen in the raw output of a rectifier or the fluctuating voice signal on a telephone. 5. Explain the effect of resistance in circuits. • 8. Janet Waking By John Crowe Ransom The poem, Janet Waking , symbolizes a turning point in a child s life. It starts out with a young kid in a slumber, and it ends with a mourning of a beloved pet. This shift that John Crowe Ransom creates shows just how drastic this step in life was. Since the story is told from a father s point of view, we get to look through a mature lense of how the child is impacted and just how young and undeveloped her mind is. As the poem goes on, we finally see what message the author is trying to convey. Throughout the poem, the poet carefully picks and constructs words and sentences that perfectly give the poem life and meaning. Firstly, the name of the hen is Chucky. There are countless kinds of gender double standards in society, including the standards parents hold their children to. It is no secret that parents dream for their daughters to be attractive and their sons to be athletic. How else do these standards become apparent in a child s upbringing? The following will summarize Iarocci and Keshen s book, and will end with a discussion and reflection on its strengths and weaknesses. The first chapter, Politics and Recruitment, outlines Canada s involvement in the two World Wars and compares the different approaches to recruitment of Prime Minster Robert Laird Borden in the First World War and that of Prime Minster William Lyon Mackenzie King s approach during the second. The First World War came as a surprise to many Canadians. Throughout English Canada, Canadians were enthusiastic for the fight and viewed the war as a way to preserve freedom from German militarism. The patriotic duty of soldiers would demonstrate loyalty to secure a strong voice for Canada in shaping imperial affairs. The Dominion of Canada entered the war with a small permanent military force of about 3,000 soldiers and the war had relatively little impact on the daily lives of Canadians. This idea is explored in the film Sing Street, directed by Jim Carney. The film follows the journey of Conor Lawlor, a shy schoolboy who gets moved from a private school into a strict Catholic school due to his parent s financial situation. At Syng Street he is bullied by another student and his principle. A turning point occurs when he falls in love with a mysterious girl. It is necessary to grow beyond hindering beliefs to achieve a new perspective on life to lead to happiness. In the beginning, Carney demonstrates that a person who is anchored by demotivating beliefs can ultimately compromise their happiness. This is seen in the establishing shot where Conor is in his room and his parents can be overheard arguing about their mortgage and their distaste for each other. • 20. Investigating the Relationship Between Superstious Belief... In times of uncontrollability, there is evidence to suggest that individuals tend to invoke superstious beliefs. Anecdotal evidence has also suggested that highly superstitious people believe that they have a level of control over situations where they objectively have none. For example, some people have lucky charms that they believe allow for a greater sense of perceived control of external factors. Locus of control has often been used to explain the relationship of perceived control and superstious belief and has been dichotomized as internal or external (Rotter, 1966). Whereas an internal locus of control is inherent of the belief that all events are due to internal dispositions, an external locus of control believes that events are a result of other people, or chance/luck. This concept is associated with the Learned helplessness explanation (Abramson et al., 1978; Maier Seligman, 1976). What this explanation proposes is that participant s attribute the uncontrollability of a situation to internal dispositions i.e., they display an internal locus of control, and, by extension, denote failure as a result of not having any control over the situation. Contrastingly, individuals who don t succumb to the learned helplessness effect are those who place failure outside the realms of their own self. I.e., they present an external locus of control. This has been validated by Dudley (1999), who found that participants with a higher level of superstition demonstrated less of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A vassal was a deputy of the lord and was responsible for making sure that the work on the manor was getting done. This was a mutual respect system in which land and protection was given down the hierarchy and goods and services such as food and tax money was given up. During the middle ages there were many threats from barbarian tribes most notably the vikings and some of the Germanic tribes that prompted the creation of feudal systems and the manor. While this protected the serfs and other people who other wise would not be able to defend themselves, this also gave power the nobility and allowed them to heavily tax the lower class. In addition to corruption, this gave the upper class and the nobility far more control over the people of the kingdoms and could have also caused many of the problems during the middle ages. There is an intrinsic, gut churning feel of risk within the process of telling the truth. A risk that gives a certain adrenaline rush, all while allowing one to reflect. Harriet Jacobs and John Edgar Wideman undergo this while telling their stories, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (Jacobs) and Our Time (Wideman). Wasn t there something fundamental in my writing, in my capacity to function that depended on flight, on escape? Wasn t another person s skin a hiding place, a place to work out anxiety, to face threats too intimidating to handle in any other fashion? Wasn t writing about people a way of exploiting them? Kant s Claim That Good Will Is The Only Intrinsic Good Katie Russell Jennifer Thorington PHIL1320.040 11/19/15 Kant ethics As it is a stated fact, Kant s claim is that good will is the only intrinsic good. Now, what exactly does Kant mean by this claim that he makes? I think that it is important to mention what good will is. So, good will has two parts, one is the ability to determine what your duty is and two is have a steady commitment to do your duty for its own sake. Intrinsic goods are those things that whose value consists in the fact that they help to bring about other good things. So what exactly does Kant mean when he says that good will is the only intrinsic good? Basically it boils down to this, you have to have the right intentions when doing something and obey the moral law and in those things are where you find what is intrinsically good. We can be doing the right thing according to what we believe is morally right but at the same time it doesn t have to be good will. • 27. Importance Of School Dress Codes How School Dress Codes are Detrimental to Girls. In many American middle and high schools, there are rules on how you must dress. The most known of these are that boys must wear shirts and must not show their underwear, and girls must have shorts or skirts be fingertip length, not show shoulders or bra straps, and not show too much cleavage. The rules vary by school, but most of these rules are geared towards young women. College and real life do not have dress codes. Employers have dress codes so that their employees can convey to customers what the business wants them too, but dress codes in public high schools are sexist and teach young women that their education is less valuable than that of a man s. Firstly, most school dress codes are aimed at girls. According to the dress code of my alma mater, Lakota West High School, there are twelve items of clothing that are not allowed that are directed towards girls, and only 3 that are specific to boys. There are more that are unisex, but I have singled out the ones that are gender specific. Why are girls the ones who are more restricted by the dress code? Imagine you are a young man getting ready for school in the morning. If your outfit doesn t have oversized armholes, dog collars/spikes, or drug or alcohol related messages, congratulations! You re ready for school. Now, if you re a young woman getting ready for school, your outfit must not show your bra straps, have sleeves that cover your entire shoulder, and not have oversized armholes. Your shorts or skirt cannot be past your fingertips, which for some girls with long arms means wearing jeans even in 90 degree weather. Your jewelry and piercings must not be potentially harmful (it is up to the staff to dictate what is and what s not), and your hair and makeup must not disrupt the educational process. (Again, it is the job of the staff to decide what is disruptive, there are no set guidelines.) It s a lot harder to get ready for school as a girl, which just adds more stress to get ready in the morning, and gives them one other thing to worry about besides schoolwork. The thyroid a small organ on the front of your neck gave me some serious problems for about 2 years. From little things like sleep, appetite, and headaches it quickly scaled to many more major things like heart palpations and severe dehydration. It may seem like something very useless in the body, but I will never forget what it caused, and how hard it was to overcome it. That little organ did way more than it probably knew it could do which was giving me a completely different outlook of life itself. How could one simple thing do that to my entire body. I would ask later on when I finally figured out who the culprit of my sickness was. That thyroid caused many problems around the ages of 14 16. The first sign of this takes me back all the way to eighth grade where I was just incredibly tired. I felt absolutely horrible physically I couldn t get out of bed, and it was hard to do some simple tasks like walking. I would be out of school for two days when my mother who thought it was the flu that was affecting eventually made an appointment for the doctor to get whatever was causing me to be this sick figured out, so I could be back to shape. We have seen the numbers on the oil bottles and read what the manufacturers recommend for the oil but, how were those numbers derived? The increase in technology has changed the way it was measured, but the numbers have stayed consistent so as not to make consumers learn a new system, or have the oil manufacturers feel obligated to list both the old numbers and the new numbers on the labels. Most assume that race and ethnicity have virtually the same definition and use the two terms interchangeably; however, ethnicity and race are two extremely diverse concepts that are frequently misconstrued by the general public. Race is the idea that people who look similar share similar backgrounds; however, genetically, this is not always the case.
