Lincoln City, Oregon contracted Avia Design Group to design, plan and help implement a city-wide wayfinding program to support the city's brand and to improve visitor navigation through the City and to its destinations.
The new program will help establish aesthetic features that celebrate Lincoln City's unique sense of place and to enhance the region as a vibrant community and memorable destination.
Wayfinding guides people to and through environments combining traditional wayfinding devices with digital technologies. Our goal is to point people to destinations, elevate their place experience, enhance their sense of discovery and, just as importantly, support the brand.
Avia Design Group's approach to the development and management of successful wayfinding programs combines 3 decades of experience with current technological methods. We understand national and local compliance requirements and how to facilitate public consensus. We maintain strategic partnerships with digital developers, urban planners and fabricators. We regard wayfinding as an orchestra of accomplished musicians and instruments of which we orchestrate for harmonious results that benefit our clients.

Lincoln City’s wayfinding program supports an
initiative managed by the City. In addition to the
primary goal of improving visitor navigation through
the City and to its destinations, the program will help
establish aesthetic features that celebrate the Lincoln
City brand, promote parking opportunities and
improve traffic to its retail centers.
This document represents Avia Design Group’s
(Avia) design intent. It is a communication device
for prospective bidders to understand the form and
function of elements that make up the system.
This Design Intent document is one of three
companion documents. These include the Message
Schedule and the Location Plan. Together, with a
Request for Proposal (RFP,) they constitute the
Bid Documents.
From the Bid Documents, qualified bidders shall
formulate and submit their bid to fabricate, deliver
and install all items required to fulfill the contracted
scope of work as described herein. The bid
documents are not to be considered fabrication-
ready as they only serve as the basis of design,
messaging and preferred placement.
All design concepts, production art, written content
and aesthetic format contained in this Design Intent
document are proprietary and are the joint legal
property of Lincoln City and Avia. The recipient
agrees not to use or disclose this material, or to
make copies or use parts thereof, without the written
consent of its owners.
This and its companion documents shall be used by
the successful Sign Contractor to prepare detailed
shop drawings that demonstrate qualified engineering
and fabrication methodology for the successful
implementation of the wayfinding program. Detailed
shop drawings with specification details shall be
submitted to the City for review and approval prior
to proceeding with fabrication.
Details within this Design Intent document are scaled
to fit 17” x 11” (tabloid) sheet format.
The Sign Contractor is responsible for matching
all colors, finishes and materials specified in this
document and is required to provide the City’s
representative with samples for review and approval
prior to full execution.
The Sign Contractor shall be responsible for
verification of all dimensions, engineering, wind load,
foundation compliances and field conditions relative
to the project prior to material order and component
fabrication. The Sign Contractor shall verify that all
signage to be installed within the ROW complies
with the applicable Federal Highway Administration
requirements.
The City’s representative shall be notified, in writing,
of any contrary conditions, errors or discrepancies in
these documents that may pose challenges for the
successful fabrication and installation of the program.
Alternate materials, finishes and proposed structuring
may be considered as long as the design and
performance of the system are not compromised
and it can be demonstrated that they are of equal
or better quality. All proposed alternates must
be conveyed to the City and/or their assigned
representative in writing prior to execution.
Please note that visual accuracy of the colors and
finishes represented in this document may not be
consistent with actual manufacturer’s swatches
and samples due to limitations of color printing
technology. The Sign Contractor is required to
appropriate actual color swatches and material
samples from the approved manufacturer.
Templates and production-ready art will be available
upon request. Production-ready art and templates for
each sign are formatted as one or all of the following:
Adobe (CC) Illustrator, Adobe (CC) InDesign and
Adobe Acrobat (PDF) files. Each file is sized as either
100% or a scaled percentage with bleed margins.
Reconstructed art or digitized versions from printed
copies shall not be used at any time. Only licensed
font families or original electronic files generated
by Avia may be used for application onto signage.
Access information to the project web page shall be
provided upon request.
The Sign Contractor shall provide electronic
production layouts of all message panels to the
City’s representative for approval prior to final graphic
application.
Production artwork, graphics, design concepts and
formulas shall be used solely for the execution of
the project represented in this document. They may
not be used in the course of future projects, resold
or reconstituted without the City’s and/or Avia’s
written consent.
