Scape Goat As An American Scapegoat
A scapegoat is an event, person or object that is used to lay the blame on for all that goes wrong,
regardless of the contributions of others. Scape goat is a word that originated from the bible.
Historically the term comes from the Old Testament in regards to the Day of Atonement. According to
the Old Testament the goat was sent into the wilderness on the Day of Atonement which represented
the bearer of the sins of the people. So the goat would have the people sins on its back and was sent
out to perish, thus saving the people by its demise. In today s society scapegoating is found in many
forms. The most prevalent is scapegoating found in prejudices. Donald trump for example has used
this tactic for his own benefit by saying illegal Mexican

Essay about The Moral Permissibility of Lying
The Moral Permissibility of Lying
Missing Works Cited
The question of what constitutes morality is often asked by philosophers. One might wonder why
morality is so important, or why many of us trouble ourselves over determining which actions are
moral actions. Mill has given an account of the driving force behind our questionings of morality. He
calls this driving force Conscience, and from this mass of feeling which must be broken through in
order to do what violates our standard of right, we have derived our concept of morality (Mill 496).
Some people may practice moral thought more often than others, and some people may give no
thought to morality at all. However, morality is nevertheless a possibility of human nature, and a ...

This is because silence is not the truth, so by remaining quiet, that person is not telling the truth. A
more recognizable form of lying is outright lying, such as when a student claims to be working hard
on her philosophy paper when she has in fact been partying at Myrtle Beach for the last two days.
Deception is yet another form of lying, because by tricking another person into believing something
false, one is withholding the truth from that person. By withholding the truth, the truth is not being
told, so the deceiver must be a liar. Regardless of the form in which a lie is being presented, all lies
have one thing in common. By giving others false thoughts or perceptions of an event, lies can have a
strong influence on our free thinking. Therefore, they are all violations of human reason, something
that many people strongly respect. As we will see shortly, the ability to reason is also considered
valuable to both Mill and Kant, since it underlies both of their moral theories.
Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory, as explained by the philosopher Mill. Given several
choices, a utilitarian would pick the morally correct choice by using the Greatest Happiness Principle
(487). By looking at whether the consequences of an action will produce the greater happiness for the
greater number of people than another action would, one can

without adding extra work to one department.
(03) A final change that needs to be done is to update the administrative offices, and shipping and
receiving departments with new technology and ergonomically correct desks. This should be

through and not have tried to stop it. She wants to start a new life with Cole. She visits him in the
hospital after the spirit bear attack, but also during his second stay on the island she writes him

Benefits Of Designer Babies
Genes are a complex part of human life, and make each of us different and special. But what if there
was a choice where you could genetically alter your child, making them disease free and astonishing
athletes? It sounds almost too good to be true, to have your very own designer baby. For the good of
human species, we should be allowed to alter human genetics. With all these amazing abilities and
unlimited changes we could make to our children, it would be like shopping for clothes at a mall. This
may sound like a dream come true, but it can lead to many problems in the near future. Trying to
change human genes takes away each person s own individuality, and could cause people to segregate
the people who were not genetically altered. Even if it can make beautiful, healthy children, it has too
many problems than benefits to actually be any good for humans. ... Show more content on

Gun Control Laws Should Have A Balance
America has the highest amount of gun related deaths each year in the world. In Germany 381, in
France 255, in Canada 165 in the United Kingdom 68, in Australia 65, in Japan 39 and in the United
States, 11,127 (Moore Michael, 51:15 51:48). Since the United States has the highest number of
deaths, it is important to have gun control laws that restrict people from owning dangerous firearms
like machine guns. Gun control laws should support both sides of the debate. Of course, both sides
will not be completely happy with the laws created, but America should have a balance. In 2008, a
poll was taken stating: Adult poll respondents views on the meaning of the Second Amendment; An
individual s right to bear arms: Republican 51% and Democrats 41% (The History of the Right to Bear
Arms). Today, the United States is more divided on gun control than it has ever been. The Second
Amendment states: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of
the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (Milestones in Federal Gun Control
Legislation). Unless the Second Amendment is changed, we cannot take the right from others to own
guns. However, the government should regulate the types of gun Americans can own and who can
own a gun because times have changed and American s mental health system is broken.
Decades ago, the United States was once a country where a gun was considered to survive and protect.

The Development Of The Adolescent Health Status Of Young...
Introduction:
Adolescents are a group often overlooked when it comes to health interventions. Currently there are
many services to assist parents with young children involving early intervention and community based
services both nationally and in the MidCentral region. The availability and accessibility of those
services have meant that there has been an overall improvement in the health of young children. In
comparison the improvement of health in adolescents has been much less. (1) In particular concern for
this group are mental health disorders, drug and alcohol abuse, sexually transmitted infections and
teenage pregnancy. (3) In MidCentral, some initiatives have already been implemented to improve the
accessibility of health services to youth. This paper will look at these current services and examine
aspects that could be improved as well as propose alternative ideas that can contribute to the
improvement of the adolescent health status in this region.
Issues affecting Adolescents:
An investigation was made exploring the factors that may contribute to adolescent behavior called
Improving the Transition Reducing Social and Psychological morbidity during adolescence.
Mentioned in the report is that there is a large increase in mortality and morbidity during adolescence
by almost 200% compared with childhood. Adolescents undergo many physical and emotional
changes as a result of puberty. Brain maturation is also occurring but is not complete until later in life.

The ideas of bias and judgment in light of the characters that are the most unpreventable twirled to a

A Study Of Life Span Development
Have you ever asked yourself, who am I? What makes me the individual that I am today? Well, you
are not alone. Many individuals have been trying to figure out why they have certain characteristics or
why they did not have those leadership or charismatic traits that they wish they could have. All these
questions can be explored through the study of life span development. Within this science, we can
explore the factors that influence who you are with identity development, gender, stereotypes,
ethnicity and culture. Identity is what makes the individual. The uniqueness, such as specific traits
ranging from religious to intelligence. Despite having the same parents, even siblings have different
identity. One sibling might posses more intellectual, and athletic traits than the other, while the other
one is complete opposite. But having this unique set of traits is what makes us as an individuals. It s
what distinguishes between you and the world. If everyone would have had the same identity then we
would not have evolved. We would have not discovered all these scientific achievements throughout
history. There wouldn t be all stars or hall of fame sports athletes in history. Having different qualities
as an individual is what sets you apart and makes up the person you are today. Of course, you might
ask yourself, why do I hold these specific set of traits or why do I act this way? These questions have
even been asked as early during adolescent years. During

Persuasive Essay About Responsible Adults
Joining the circle of so said responsible adults has always been a hard task for teenagers throughout
the ages. In ancient times, it was a test of strength and adaptability. Can you survive alone in the
wilderness? Do you have what it takes to protect your wife? And for women, do you have what it
takes to take care of your man? To raise his children and to make sure they also became responsible
adults? What about today? Is it the same? No not at all. So, what s today s modern test? Well, it s very
simple. There is none. As you graduate school, or drop out by your own choice, you will automatically
be regarded as an adult and act like one. If you don t, well, you ll be cursed and back talked about for
being irresponsible, a trash, a degenerate of society and a lot more. To be a responsible adult, the first
thing needed to have is an employment. An employment is the key to success. Without an
employment, you ll be without money, and without status in society. However, this was also where
some were stuck. Like Tommy.
Eleventh job interview this week, right down the fucking drain. Tommy muttered as he pushed the
pedals of his bike as fast as he could to avoid most of the splattering downpour that was scheduled to
come in ten minutes according to the city speaker s announcement which covered the bustling
metropolis in the inner area of the city.

of the landlord, who the other residents couldn t handle.

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
The subject of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) in the treatment of dysphagia triggers
much controversy within the field of speech language pathology. The argument created between
professionals with opposing views is mainly due to a lack of sufficient empirical evidence that NMES
either improves or decreases swallow function. Currently, studies examining the outcome of NMES
application are not of high quality and often yield inconclusive results. Despite limited evidence based
support, many clinicians incorporate NMES into dysphagia treatment plans in a variety of clinical
cases. This is problematic as the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) has
promoted evidence based practice as an integral component of clinical decision making in recent years
(ASHA 2005). To better understand the debate surrounding NMES and its implementation, several
aspects of this treatment modality must be considered. While NMES in the treatment of dysphagia is a
relatively new clinical practice, NMES itself is not. In physical and occupational therapy, electrical
stimulation of the trunk and limbs has been a successful and well documented component of
rehabilitation (Clark, Lazarus, Arvedson, Schooling, Frymark 2009). However, generalizing the
possible benefits of NMES across disciplines to the swallowing mechanism is difficult because the
oral, pharyngeal, and laryngeal systems are unique in structure and function. Regardless of these
apparent differences, Defabrizio

ambivalent feelings towards Gatsby, despising his personality and corrupted dream but feeling drawn

Treasury Bonds And The National Debt
Daniel Hysinger
US Treasury Bonds and the National Debt
The U.S. Treasury bond is a low interest way for the government to borrow money. The bond, along
with Treasury notes and bills, form the Securities which the Federal government borrows from lenders
for a set amount of time. Issued by the Department of the Public Debt, a subset of the US Treasury,
they are usually issued in 30 year maturities which pay interest twice yearly. Because the debt
obligation is backed by the tax generating, money printing, and understandably trusted government of
the United States, bonds are generally considered to be a safe or virtually no risk investment. Thanks
to this low risk attribute however, bonds are regarded as very low yield security, which is exactly why
it is a good instrument for the United States government to employ, as long as it can turn a relatively
decent profit on the initial investment. According to the September 30th, 2014 report of Monthly
Statement of the Public Debt of the United States, the amount of Treasury Bonds outstanding totaled
$8,167,759 million, I ll call it roughly $8.2 trillion. This number composes the majority of the
combined $12.7 trillion of US Treasury securities outstanding. These securities outstanding are also
known as the national debt. The numbers listed above, and throughout this paper will disregard debt
being owed to intra governmental holdings of the US, as bonds make up a minuscule (in comparison,
only $7.6 million) fraction of what they

Agatha Christie s And Then There Were None
People have always said not to judge a book by its cover. Well disregard that because in order to
analyse a book cover, you have to judge it. The book And Then There Were None written by Agatha
Christie has many book jackets, some enticing and some not, but there is one in particular that stands
out. This book cover has a good appearance that hints certain occurrences, it has the ability to be
alluring as well has having good font, but despite these great qualities, it does have a flaw or two.
The first few good factors of this book cover is its representation and subtle giveaways. At first glance,
it is obvious that there are ten figures, however those who have not read the book yet would not have
been able to tell that they are soldier ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First thing is the writing and the fact that Agatha Christie s name is not written on it. How is someone
supposed to know who the book is by if it is not written on the book. Besides the title, having the
author s name is one of the most important elements of the book jacket. Along with that fault, there is
the fact that, in spite of all the good features of the cover, there is no alluring colors, it is just red and
black. Maybe, if you re someone who likes dark stories and murder mysteries then it ll allure you, but
in order to appeal to everyone, there needs to be more than just a black background with red China
figures and blood. Also, the writing isn t so appealing, it looks like it was scratched on. The writing
could work for a horror story, but not a murder mystery. Maybe going through those series of events
was painful and terrifying for the characters, but for the readers it is something that makes you want to
keep reading. It keeps people hooked, but in no way is the story frightening, if anything it is
interesting. Nevertheless, these flaws do not stop this book from being a good read.
Sometimes it is best to judge a book by its cover, because it can tell you a lot about the book. The
novel And Then There Were None written by Agatha Christie has had a lot of book jackets, and one in

known as peacekeeping . Peacekeeping attempts have been happening throughout history.
Peacekeeping is defined as the maintenance of international peace and security by the deployment of
military forces in a particular area ( Spagnol). This means the cooperation of different nation states to
complete missions or activities that will end in the result of lasting peace. The main contributor to
international peacekeeping is the United Nations. The United nations is an international organization
where the missions and work is guided by the proposing and principles contained in the founding
charter ( United Nations website). Despite the substantial amount of peacekeeping the united nations
does there are outside forces such an non governmental organizations also known as NGOS that are
peacekeeping forces as well. In retrospect peacekeeping is a very complex concept and throughout
history has had many successes but also an overwhelming amount of failures. These failures have
causes high amounts of criticism, and have led many people to believe that peacekeeping in general
has been a failure. Despite the failures of peacekeeping some countries have been more involved than
others. one of the largest contributors to peacekeeping is Canada and has made peacekeeping a

The Bluest Eye By Jacqueline Woodson
Although written decades apart, Jacqueline Woodson s Another Brooklyn and Toni Morrison s The
Bluest Eye both explore the trials and tribulations that young black girls must endure as they begin to
step into womanhood. While the burdens that the protagonists in each of these texts differ in some key
ways, one of the most interesting things that both Woodson and Morrison depicted was a sense of
difficulty in coping with these changes, and rather than having any semblance of mastery over their
circumstances, these young protagonists would instead project their emotions onto something else as
they try to discover what causes their suffering. Morrison s The Bluest Eye, for example, features this
prominently throughout the text as Pecola sets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Junior, Geraldine s son, loathes this cat, as the text states, [as Junior] grew older, he learned how to
direct his hatred of his mother to the cat, and spent some happy moments watching it suffer (Morrison
86). This section not only serves as another example of projection from a developing, young, black
character, but more importantly, it also sets up the expectation for this cat to be loved. Later in the text,
Pecola finally goes to Junior s home to see the cat, and Junior promptly throws the cat in her face and
locks them both in a room (89 90). But as Pecola stays in the sealed room, something odd begins to
happen. She looks down at the cat, and the text gives us a description of the cat as black all over, deep
silky black, and his eyes, pointing down toward his nose, were bluish green (90). Originally, then, the
cat s eyes are described as bluish green until Pecola sees the light hit them in a certain way, then they
shift to blue. The text continues, The light made them shine like blue ice. Pecola rubbed the cat s head;
he whined, his tongue flicking with pleasure. The blue eyes in the black face held her (90). Notably,
the moment that the light changes the eyes of the cat to blue, Pecola begins to show it affection, and
the cat begins to show signs of happiness. Notably, past this point in the text, at least for the remainder
of when the cat is mentioned, he is always given the description of having blue eyes rather

Research Paper
The Importance of Physical Activity for Special Needs
Everyone needs physical activity to stay healthy. For special needs, it is even more important exercise
and to get around. Exercise affects them by enabling them to learn new things that could help them
physically, mentally, and emotionally. Strengthening those attributes could improve their skills and
help them learn in different ways. Physical activity is very crucial for special needs to help improve
them physically, mentally, and emotionally.
For special needs not to have physical activity is a bad thing. Special needs are more likely to receive

Half of that 21 million does not get the exercise they need, and it jeopardizes their health(Reinburg).
According to Dianna Carroll, 57 percent of adults with limited mobility, 40 percent of adults with
memory or thinking problems, 36 percent of those with vision problems and 33 percent of those with
serious hearing difficulty get no aerobic exercise. That is in contrast of the 26 percent of adults
without a disability and get no exercise. With those stats it shows the importance of exercise and how
vital it is to get out and active. The less active people with disabilities are, the less function their lungs
and heart will have. In those percents there are people who have difficulty walking or climbing stair,
have problems seeing or hearing, or concentrating, remembering or making decisions(Reinburg). This
not only affects their health, but also how much they are going to learn and respond. These stats tell us
what happens when special needs people don t get the exercise they need and how this affects them.
When special needs have physical activity, it a real change made to them physically, mentally, and
emotionally. Physically it helps them get healthy. But it helps more than that. Exercise helps the body
boost body functions. One of the many functions that it helps is the immune system. With just that
improvement it moves their arms and legs producing more white bloods to fight off bacteria and other
illnesses that could get them sick.

The Historical and Colonial Context of Brian Friel s Translations
Regarded by many as Brian Friel s theatrical masterpiece, Seamus Deane described Translations as a
sequence of events in history which are transformed by his writing into a parable of events in the
present day (Introduction 22). The play was first produced in Derry in 1980. It was the first production
by Field Day, a cultural arts group founded by Friel and the actor Stephen Rea, and associated with
Deane, Seamus Heaney and Tom Paulin.
As Deane asserts, the play is in many respects an intelligent and enlightening metaphor for the
situation in Northern Ireland. The aims of raising cultural awareness and dispelling socio political
apathy in the North were central to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This culminated in the Rebellion of 1798, lead by Wolfe Tone and the Society of United Irishmen, in
which Hugh and Jimmy participated: The road to Sligo. A spring morning. 1798. Going into battle
(445). But, as these characters soon discovered, the rebellion failed resulting in large executions and
the passing of the Act of Union in 1800. This piece of legislation, effective from 1 January 1801,
brought Ireland under the direct rule of the British Crown.
1823 saw the rise of Daniel O Connell (the only real person mentioned in the play), a disillusioned
veteran of 1798 who founded the Catholic Association. O Connell campaigned for better civil rights
and social conditions for the Irish people, hence Maire reporting that he said We should all be learning
to speak English (399). O Connell believed that it was necessary to use the English language in order
to allow Ireland to progress in a quickly modernising Western world. In 1829, due to his efforts in
Parliament, the Catholic Emancipation Act came into force overturning the penal laws.
It was at this juncture, when the play takes place, that Britain began to make deeper inroads to Irish
society and culture. An attempt to colonise the mind and the people as opposed to conquering land
through brute force. Translations is Friel s vehicle for representing methods central to the colonial
discourse of Imperialist aspirations. In the foreground of the play

The Taliban emerged in 1994 from a group of guerilla type Muslim Mujahidin that had fought in the
Afghan and Soviet war, and were dissatisfied and disillusioned with their current Mujahidin
leadership. Much of the funding and high tech weapons provided to this militant group was the

Defender Of The Faith By Philip Roth
Defender of faith, is a complex, capably envisioned story depicting a contention of loyalties and
portraying the trouble of being a better than average and impartial individual in a world assail with
contradicting needs. In the short story Defender of the faith by Philip Roth, we are confronted with
several different conflicts: man vs. himself, as Sergeant Marx is struggling to decide whether he
should be a military man, or a Jewish man; man versus man, with Grossbart continually difficult
power and osmosis into the military; and man versus society, as Sergeant Marx is stressed over how
his choices will be gotten in the military group. These contentions all lead to a general topic. The

who like to endeavor certain things or circumstances further bolstering their own good fortune. It
might be difficult to choose how to manage these circumstances, particularly in the event that you
wind up in a circumstance including a situation.
I believe Roth treats religion as a very serious and delicate subject. Roth treats religion as something
that shouldn t be made as something that should define us. Roth is attempting the set out the
establishment that religion is going to have influence yet it s not the principle idea that makes a man, it

The Faerie Queene Essay
The poem, The Faerie Queene , is a story about a courageous knight who goes through great trials and
fights monsters. This in itself is entertaining but, it also has many allegorical references to Christianity.
Many times Spenser talks about things when in reality he s really talking something closer to home.
For instance, this faerie land he talks about sounds like he is referring to England, the country where
he s from. Also, the title Faerie Queene itself is seems to represent Queen Elizabeth, the Queen of
England. Redcrosse, the hero of the poem, is a major part of this allegory. He is called the Knight of

Redcrosse is first introduced to evil when fighting the dragon, Error. When fighting the dragon,
Spenser writes, Her vomit full of bookes and papers was (177). These papers represent Roman
Catholic propaganda that was put out in Spenser s time, against Queen Elizabeth. This shows the
allegory Spencer was trying to put forth in writing this poem. After defeating the dragon, Redcrosse
and Una travel looking for the right path, when it starts to get dark and they find a place to stay, with a

He conjures up two spirits to trouble Redcrosse. One of the spirits goes into his dreams and makes him

who asks for a kiss from him. He turns it down, and falls back asleep. Then Archimago takes the spirit

Effective Cancer Screening Methods Essay
Effective cancer screening methods are used to detect or identify the presence of a specific cancer
before the individual displays any symptoms of cancer. Early detection of a cancer through screening
can save the life of a person who may have died without screening detection. Early detection of cancer
can also provide a less costly and more effective treatment than if the cancer progresses requiring
more advanced or drastic treatment. Screenings tests for the more common cancers such as breast,

known for certain if this test actually does saves lives. It is not clear if the benefits of PSA screening
outweigh the risks of diagnostic tests and cancer treatments (National Cancer Institute, 2009).
According to NCI, a PSA test may detect a small amount of cancer that may never become life
threatening. This is referred to as over diagnosis and this can put men at risk of complications from
any additional and unnecessary treatment (National Cancer Institute, 2009). A study at the Washington

For three hours and a half in a courtroom at Boise, Ohio,...
For three hours and a half in a courtroom at Boise, Ohio, Harry Orchard assembled in the witness
chair at the Haywood trial and recounted a record of offenses, slaughter, and murder... the like of
which no individual in the overcrowded courtroom had ever thought of. Not in the entire scope of
Bloody Gulch literature will there be exposed anything that approaches an equivalent to the atrocious
narrative so motionlessly, coolly, and composedly voiced by this audacious, disimpassioned man
slaughterer. For on his very first day of the trial, Orchard narrated the specifics of his wrongdoings
without hesitation. Just last year, 1906, he with another fellow had implanted an explosive in the
Vindicator Mine at Cripple Creek, Colorado, that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only once or twice was there a dramatic touch. It was a repulsive, sickening, nauseating story, but he
conveyed it as meekly as the simplest chronicle of the utmost common episode of the most ordinary
reality. He was neither an egotist nor an adulator. He neither bragged of his horrendous offenses nor
sobbed in fake regret and shame. It was just a simple narration of individual practice, and as it went
on, hour after hour, with voluminous detail, specific and intense here, half disremembered and
ambiguous there. Slowly it conveyed to the spectators the belief that it all happened it was the truth.
Falsehoods are not prepared as convoluted and intricate as that tale. Fiction so full of incident, so
mixed of purpose and cross purpose, so permeated with the play of human passion, does not spring
offhand from the most marvelous fertile invention. Touching continually points on which there can be
controversy, Orchard described undertakings whose purpose until to day had been unknown, whose
motive had lingered as clandestine. And as he continued to recount his story, the half stifled gathering
in the populated courtroom was so silent that his soft speech infiltrated to the farthermost area. As I
looked around the trial room, I noticed that to Haywood, the story was of

The Doctrine of Double Effect
There are times when doing the right thing can lead to bad consequences. For example, if your family
is about to be killed by a criminal and the only thing you can do to protect your family from being
murdered is to kill the person who is threatening them, you would feel it necessary to commit an evil
in order to prevent a greater misfortune. On the other hand, the actor in cases such as this faces a
moral dilemma of having to kill someone. This is where the Doctrine of Double Effect comes into
play. The Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE) is a principal which aims to provide specific guidelines for
determining when it is morally permissible to perform an action in the pursuit of a positive outcome
with the full knowledge that the action will also bring about an evil consequence. (Solomon, 2014).
Although the Doctrine of Double Effect is viewed as a positive theory by man, it is unjust in that it
gives people a justification to commit heinous acts if they merely claim that they intended some sort
of good outcome to result from their actions.
The Doctrine of Double Effect was first created by Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas believed that if you
killed someone who was attacking you, you were justified in this action because the individual who
was being attacked didn t have an intent to kill the attacker from the beginning. Aquinas observes that
nothing hinders one act from having two effects, only one of which is intended, while the other is
beside the intention. ... Accordingly, the act

What Are The Similarities Between Beautiful And...
Christina Arguilera Beautiful and Beyonce Pretty Hurts have some similarities and differences
between them. The two songs were both created to boost confidence and communicate to insecure
people. Some similarities between the two is the intended audience, the mood, and the subject. The
intended audience for the two is insecure people. The mood for the two is powerful because they made
me feel beautiful. The subject for the two is you are beautiful no matter what. The differences between
the two is the speaker, the tone, the purpose, and the theme. The speakers are Christina Aguilera and
Beyonce. The tone of Pretty Hurts is neutral because she wasn t mad, she just doesn t like how they
are taking our natural beauty away. The

Reflection Paper About Museum
Museum Visit and Reflection I had the opportunity to visit the de Young Museum located at Golden
Gate Park in San Francisco. The de Young is home to collections of American art from the 17th
century to present, African art, oceanic art, art of the Americas, photography and rotating exhibitions. I
had wanted to visit the de Young for some time and finally made my first trip there with my wife. We
decided to time our arrival to the opening of the museum and spent four hours exploring everything
from the artwork on the grounds to the Summer of Love Exhibition. It was a great day and I definitely
felt my mind stretch to comprehend all of the artwork and make the connection to what I have been
learning. In this paper, I will share a description of the different styles of art I viewed, the experience
of viewing art in person and how art is relevant today.
Artists and Artistic Style
While I enjoyed many of the works of art at the museum I will focus on a few pieces that really caught
my attention. The first would be a contemporary sculpture, Anti Mass created by artist Cornelia
Parker. Constructed from wood, nails and wire, Anti Mass was made from the remains of a Southern
Baptist church which was burned by arsonists. Hanging in the air the church represented by charred
wood appears to be exploding outward. For me this was such a powerful statement and made me think
of the violent persecution of African Americans in the south. Because it was constructed from the
remains of a

Gary Soto
Gary Soto is a very shrewd American poet, novelist, and memoirist. Being a Mexican American, Soto
emphasizes latino culture in his writings. He also uses his experiences from living in the barrios of
central California to create conflicts and characters.
Growing up, Mexican Americans in Fresno California, Soto s Family, were farmers and factory
workers. Several quotes from the article, About Gary Soto, give information on Soto s family. For
example, the article quotes, everyone in his family was a field or factory worker. ( About ) According
to this article, being a Mexican American family in Fresno California it was almost like Soto s family
were destined to be laborers. They lived ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soto is known for his constant use of spanish within all his literature. For example, Soto quotes Not
one day would pass without the butcher or barber...or ambitious children with dollar signs in their eyes
waving to El Millonario. (Soto 28) El Millonario is spanish for the millionaire. Soto uses spanish to
emphasize a connection towards poverty and how people of wealth were mostly looked upon when in
the barrios. Another example is shown when Soto quotes They shook hands, raza style, and jerked
their heads at one another in a saludo de vato. (Soto 53) Saludo de vato is spanish for any type of
greeting like wassup or whats hanging. Soto tries to connect to the hispanic culture within his
hometown, Fresno, California. Soto also quotes His father, who was puro Mexicano. (Soto 2) Puro
Mexicano is spanish for pure Mexican. In this quote, Soto uses spanish to accentuate and connect to
how hispanic his father was. Overall, Soto foregrounds his hispanic culture and wants people to know
that he is

Scape goat is a word that originated from the bible. Historically the term comes from the Old Testament in regards to the Day of Atonement. According to the Old Testament the goat was sent into the wilderness on the Day of Atonement which represented the bearer of the sins of the people. • 4. Essay about The Moral Permissibility of Lying The Moral Permissibility of Lying Missing Works Cited The question of what constitutes morality is often asked by philosophers. One might wonder why morality is so important, or why many of us trouble ourselves over determining which actions are moral actions. Mill has given an account of the driving force behind our questionings of morality. He calls this driving force Conscience, and from this mass of feeling which must be broken through in order to do what violates our standard of right, we have derived our concept of morality (Mill 496). Some people may practice moral thought more often than others, and some people may give no thought to morality at all. However, morality is nevertheless a possibility of human nature, and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is because silence is not the truth, so by remaining quiet, that person is not telling the truth. A more recognizable form of lying is outright lying, such as when a student claims to be working hard on her philosophy paper when she has in fact been partying at Myrtle Beach for the last two days. Deception is yet another form of lying, because by tricking another person into believing something false, one is withholding the truth from that person. By withholding the truth, the truth is not being told, so the deceiver must be a liar. Regardless of the form in which a lie is being presented, all lies have one thing in common. By giving others false thoughts or perceptions of an event, lies can have a strong influence on our free thinking. Therefore, they are all violations of human reason, something that many people strongly respect. As we will see shortly, the ability to reason is also considered valuable to both Mill and Kant, since it underlies both of their moral theories. Utilitarianism is a consequentialist theory, as explained by the philosopher Mill. Given several choices, a utilitarian would pick the morally correct choice by using the Greatest Happiness Principle (487). By looking at whether the consequences of an action will produce the greater happiness for the greater number of people than another action would, one can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But what if there was a choice where you could genetically alter your child, making them disease free and astonishing athletes? It sounds almost too good to be true, to have your very own designer baby. For the good of human species, we should be allowed to alter human genetics. With all these amazing abilities and unlimited changes we could make to our children, it would be like shopping for clothes at a mall. This may sound like a dream come true, but it can lead to many problems in the near future. In Germany 381, in France 255, in Canada 165 in the United Kingdom 68, in Australia 65, in Japan 39 and in the United States, 11,127 (Moore Michael, 51:15 51:48). Since the United States has the highest number of deaths, it is important to have gun control laws that restrict people from owning dangerous firearms like machine guns. Gun control laws should support both sides of the debate. Of course, both sides will not be completely happy with the laws created, but America should have a balance. In 2008, a poll was taken stating: Adult poll respondents views on the meaning of the Second Amendment; An individual s right to bear arms: Republican 51% and Democrats 41% (The History of the Right to Bear Arms). Today, the United States is more divided on gun control than it has ever been. The Second Amendment states: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (Milestones in Federal Gun Control Legislation). Unless the Second Amendment is changed, we cannot take the right from others to own guns. However, the government should regulate the types of gun Americans can own and who can own a gun because times have changed and American s mental health system is broken. Many individuals have been trying to figure out why they have certain characteristics or why they did not have those leadership or charismatic traits that they wish they could have. All these questions can be explored through the study of life span development. Within this science, we can explore the factors that influence who you are with identity development, gender, stereotypes, ethnicity and culture. Identity is what makes the individual. The uniqueness, such as specific traits ranging from religious to intelligence. Despite having the same parents, even siblings have different identity. One sibling might posses more intellectual, and athletic traits than the other, while the other one is complete opposite. But having this unique set of traits is what makes us as an individuals. It s what distinguishes between you and the world. If everyone would have had the same identity then we would not have evolved. We would have not discovered all these scientific achievements throughout history. There wouldn t be all stars or hall of fame sports athletes in history. Having different qualities as an individual is what sets you apart and makes up the person you are today. • 14. Persuasive Essay About Responsible Adults Joining the circle of so said responsible adults has always been a hard task for teenagers throughout the ages. In ancient times, it was a test of strength and adaptability. Can you survive alone in the wilderness? Do you have what it takes to protect your wife? And for women, do you have what it takes to take care of your man? To raise his children and to make sure they also became responsible adults? What about today? Is it the same? No not at all. So, what s today s modern test? Well, it s very simple. There is none. As you graduate school, or drop out by your own choice, you will automatically be regarded as an adult and act like one. If you don t, well, you ll be cursed and back talked about for being irresponsible, a trash, a degenerate of society and a lot more. To be a responsible adult, the first thing needed to have is an employment. An employment is the key to success. Without an employment, you ll be without money, and without status in society. However, this was also where some were stuck. Like Tommy. Eleventh job interview this week, right down the fucking drain. Tommy muttered as he pushed the pedals of his bike as fast as he could to avoid most of the splattering downpour that was scheduled to come in ten minutes according to the city speaker s announcement which covered the bustling metropolis in the inner area of the city. As the blonde young man thought about the landlord who he would probably meet when he got home, he sighed. Ever since his parents handed in the towel, and threw him out, he had lived at an apartment which wasn t too shabby, but not too great either. The only reason he got it for so cheap was because of the landlord, who the other residents couldn t handle. You little bastard, you stole from me! Stop stealing my newspaper! No one steals my newspaper! One more time and I ll kick you out! The senile landlord was in his sixties and had a full grown beard and an antique monocle on his right eye not even god himself knows where the man found it and spoke with an intermixing of coughs and British accent as the young man arrived to the apartment, parked his bike and removed the saddle to make sure it wasn t stolen during the night. • 15. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation The subject of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) in the treatment of dysphagia triggers much controversy within the field of speech language pathology. The argument created between professionals with opposing views is mainly due to a lack of sufficient empirical evidence that NMES either improves or decreases swallow function. Currently, studies examining the outcome of NMES application are not of high quality and often yield inconclusive results. Despite limited evidence based support, many clinicians incorporate NMES into dysphagia treatment plans in a variety of clinical cases. This is problematic as the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) has promoted evidence based practice as an integral component of clinical decision making in recent years (ASHA 2005). To better understand the debate surrounding NMES and its implementation, several aspects of this treatment modality must be considered. While NMES in the treatment of dysphagia is a relatively new clinical practice, NMES itself is not. In physical and occupational therapy, electrical stimulation of the trunk and limbs has been a successful and well documented component of rehabilitation (Clark, Lazarus, Arvedson, Schooling, Frymark 2009). However, generalizing the possible benefits of NMES across disciplines to the swallowing mechanism is difficult because the oral, pharyngeal, and laryngeal systems are unique in structure and function. Scott Fitzgerald, portrays a world filled with rich societal happenings, love affairs, and corruption. Nick Carraway is the engaged narrator of the book, a curious choice considering that he is in a different class and almost in a different world than Gatsby and the other characters. Nick relates the plot of the story to the reader as a member of Gatsby s circle. He has ambivalent feelings towards Gatsby, despising his personality and corrupted dream but feeling drawn to Gatsby s magnificent capacity to hope. Using Nick as a moral guide, Fitzgerald attempts to guide readers on a journey through the novel to illustrate the corruption and failure of the American Dream. This manifests a contrast between Jordan and Nick when a few lines later he says of himself I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known. Pg 59. Nick let his honesty shine through when he admitted to himself that Jordan was a very selfish, greedy, and cynical person, but he loved her nonetheless. • 18. Treasury Bonds And The National Debt Daniel Hysinger US Treasury Bonds and the National Debt The U.S. Treasury bond is a low interest way for the government to borrow money. The bond, along with Treasury notes and bills, form the Securities which the Federal government borrows from lenders for a set amount of time. Issued by the Department of the Public Debt, a subset of the US Treasury, they are usually issued in 30 year maturities which pay interest twice yearly. Because the debt obligation is backed by the tax generating, money printing, and understandably trusted government of the United States, bonds are generally considered to be a safe or virtually no risk investment. Thanks to this low risk attribute however, bonds are regarded as very low yield security, which is exactly why it is a good instrument for the United States government to employ, as long as it can turn a relatively decent profit on the initial investment. According to the September 30th, 2014 report of Monthly Statement of the Public Debt of the United States, the amount of Treasury Bonds outstanding totaled $8,167,759 million, I ll call it roughly $8.2 trillion. This number composes the majority of the combined $12.7 trillion of US Treasury securities outstanding. These securities outstanding are also known as the national debt. The numbers listed above, and throughout this paper will disregard debt being owed to intra governmental holdings of the US, as bonds make up a minuscule (in comparison, only $7.6 million) fraction of what they ... How is someone supposed to know who the book is by if it is not written on the book. Besides the title, having the author s name is one of the most important elements of the book jacket. Along with that fault, there is the fact that, in spite of all the good features of the cover, there is no alluring colors, it is just red and black. Maybe, if you re someone who likes dark stories and murder mysteries then it ll allure you, but in order to appeal to everyone, there needs to be more than just a black background with red China figures and blood. Also, the writing isn t so appealing, it looks like it was scratched on. The writing could work for a horror story, but not a murder mystery. Maybe going through those series of events was painful and terrifying for the characters, but for the readers it is something that makes you want to keep reading. While the burdens that the protagonists in each of these texts differ in some key ways, one of the most interesting things that both Woodson and Morrison depicted was a sense of difficulty in coping with these changes, and rather than having any semblance of mastery over their circumstances, these young protagonists would instead project their emotions onto something else as they try to discover what causes their suffering. Later in the text, Pecola finally goes to Junior s home to see the cat, and Junior promptly throws the cat in her face and locks them both in a room (89 90). But as Pecola stays in the sealed room, something odd begins to happen. She looks down at the cat, and the text gives us a description of the cat as black all over, deep silky black, and his eyes, pointing down toward his nose, were bluish green (90). Originally, then, the cat s eyes are described as bluish green until Pecola sees the light hit them in a certain way, then they shift to blue. The text continues, The light made them shine like blue ice. Pecola rubbed the cat s head; he whined, his tongue flicking with pleasure. The blue eyes in the black face held her (90). Notably, the moment that the light changes the eyes of the cat to blue, Pecola begins to show it affection, and the cat begins to show signs of happiness. For instance, this faerie land he talks about sounds like he is referring to England, the country where he s from. Also, the title Faerie Queene itself is seems to represent Queen Elizabeth, the Queen of England. Redcrosse, the hero of the poem, is a major part of this allegory. He is called the Knight of Holinesse which is a reference to being holy and worshiping God. He represents the lonely Christian on a journey to put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Redcrosse and Una travel on their way, things are fine and both are kept in tact. Redcrosse is first introduced to evil when fighting the dragon, Error. When fighting the dragon, Spenser writes, Her vomit full of bookes and papers was (177). These papers represent Roman Catholic propaganda that was put out in Spenser s time, against Queen Elizabeth. This shows the allegory Spencer was trying to put forth in writing this poem. After defeating the dragon, Redcrosse and Una travel looking for the right path, when it starts to get dark and they find a place to stay, with a hermit in his inn. When they fall asleep, we find out who this hermit is, Archimago, an evil sorcerer. He conjures up two spirits to trouble Redcrosse. One of the spirits goes into his dreams and makes him dream of love and lust, when he awakes; he is lying next to the other spirit who is disguised as Una, who asks for a kiss from him. He turns it down, and falls back asleep. Then Archimago takes the spirit disguised as Una and lays it in a bed, and takes the other spirit and disguises it as a young man. Redcrosse awakes and sees this and is furious and decides to leave without her. The mission Archimago was out to accomplish had worked and he had separated holiness and faith. Now without faith, Redcrosse goes out and is all on his own. He travels on until he meets another knight, Sansfoy, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Effective Cancer Screening Methods Essay Effective cancer screening methods are used to detect or identify the presence of a specific cancer before the individual displays any symptoms of cancer. Early detection of a cancer through screening can save the life of a person who may have died without screening detection. Early detection of cancer can also provide a less costly and more effective treatment than if the cancer progresses requiring more advanced or drastic treatment. Screenings tests for the more common cancers such as breast, colon, prostate or cervical can be non invasive or only slightly invasive. The majority of screening procedures are non invasive which is more cost effective, patient convenient, and does not require any patient aftercare. Screening tests usually ... The PSA test is an excellent screening tool because it is highly sensitive, reasonably priced, and well tolerated by patients. A PSA level alone is doesn t distinguish what could be benign prostate conditions or cancer. A doctor considers PSA test when deciding whether to check further for signs of prostate cancer (National Cancer Institute, 2009). There are difficulties and controversy associated with the current screening methods for prostate cancer. The PSA test for prostate cancer has become controversial as it is not yet known for certain if this test actually does saves lives. It is not clear if the benefits of PSA screening outweigh the risks of diagnostic tests and cancer treatments (National Cancer Institute, 2009). According to NCI, a PSA test may detect a small amount of cancer that may never become life threatening. This is referred to as over diagnosis and this can put men at risk of complications from any additional and unnecessary treatment (National Cancer Institute, 2009). A study at the Washington University found 25 to 35 percent of men who had a lower than normal PSA level and underwent a prostate biopsy were found to have prostate cancer. That means that 65 to 75 percent of the remaining men did not have prostate cancer. This concludes that there is no exact specific normal or abnormal PSA levels (National Cancer Institute, 2009). The short story was adapted into a feature length film titled Memento which makes many changes to the narrative structure and characters of the short story, but maintains the same premise. Memento Mori features multiple narrators, one first person and one third person. The first person narration is provided by the story s protagonist Earl via notes addressed to a you, which turns out to be Earl. The third person narrator provides details as to what actions Earl is currently taking in the present time. After successfully murdering the man he believes killed his wife, Earl is riding in the back of a car. The ambiguity of the third person narrator in this scene causes the viewer to question whether Earl escaped via a taxi or was apprehended by the police. The story reaches its climax as Earl loses his pen and begins frantically trying to obtain a replacement so that he can document his success in killing the man who ruined his life. For three hours and a half in a courtroom at Boise, Ohio, Harry Orchard assembled in the witness chair at the Haywood trial and recounted a record of offenses, slaughter, and murder... the like of which no individual in the overcrowded courtroom had ever thought of. Not in the entire scope of Bloody Gulch literature will there be exposed anything that approaches an equivalent to the atrocious narrative so motionlessly, coolly, and composedly voiced by this audacious, disimpassioned man slaughterer. It was just a simple narration of individual practice, and as it went on, hour after hour, with voluminous detail, specific and intense here, half disremembered and ambiguous there. Slowly it conveyed to the spectators the belief that it all happened it was the truth. Falsehoods are not prepared as convoluted and intricate as that tale. • 46. The Doctrine of Double Effect There are times when doing the right thing can lead to bad consequences. For example, if your family is about to be killed by a criminal and the only thing you can do to protect your family from being murdered is to kill the person who is threatening them, you would feel it necessary to commit an evil in order to prevent a greater misfortune. On the other hand, the actor in cases such as this faces a moral dilemma of having to kill someone. This is where the Doctrine of Double Effect comes into play. The Doctrine of Double Effect (DDE) is a principal which aims to provide specific guidelines for determining when it is morally permissible to perform an action in the pursuit of a positive outcome with the full knowledge that the action will also bring about an evil consequence. (Solomon, 2014). Although the Doctrine of Double Effect is viewed as a positive theory by man, it is unjust in that it gives people a justification to commit heinous acts if they merely claim that they intended some sort of good outcome to result from their actions. The Doctrine of Double Effect was first created by Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas believed that if you killed someone who was attacking you, you were justified in this action because the individual who was being attacked didn t have an intent to kill the attacker from the beginning. Aquinas observes that nothing hinders one act from having two effects, only one of which is intended, while the other is beside the intention. ... Accordingly, the act ... I had wanted to visit the de Young for some time and finally made my first trip there with my wife.
