Matthew 7.13,14; 3.1-10
Matthew 7.13 – Enter through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and
broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter
through it;
14- And because the gate is narrow, and the path that leads to life is narrow,
and there are few who find it.
Matthew 3.1- And in those days John the Baptist appeared preaching in the
wilderness of Judea
2- and saying: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3- For this is what was announced by the prophet Isaiah, who said: Voice of
one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths
straight. 7
8. 4- And this John had his garment of camel's hair, and a leather belt about his
loins, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
5- Then he went to him Jerusalem, and all Judea, and all the province adjacent
to the Jordan,
6- and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
7- And when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his
baptism, he said to them: You brood of vipers, who taught you to flee from
the wrath to come?
8- Bear therefore fruits worthy of repentance
9- and do not presume on yourselves, saying: We have Abraham as our father;
for I tell you that even from these stones God is able to raise up children for
Abraham.
10 – And now also the ax is laid at the root of the trees; Every tree that does
not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 8
9. • INTRODUCTION
In this lesson, we will study the symbol of the narrow and the
wide gate, the narrow path and the spacious one. Our purpose is
to point out some reasons that show us why we should choose
the narrow door and, from a biblical point of view, how to enter
through the narrow path. In this sense, we will see that the
beginning of our journey must take into account the path that
leads us to Heaven.
9
12. • 1. The narrow gate.
The idea of a “narrow gate” as the path to life is present in both
Jewish and Christian literature. For example, this conception is
found in the Old Testament (Pr 15:24). We know that the door is
an entrance to a building or the wall of a city, something very
common in ancient times, when the city was completely walled
and, around the entire building, there was a narrow door. It was
through this door that everyone entered and left the city.
12
13. • 2. The narrow path.
When we talk about the narrow path, we point to the conduct,
the way of living that highlights salvation or perdition. In this
sense, the figurative language of the “narrow path”, according to
Matthew 7. points to those who desire eternal life. Not by
chance, the word “tight” comes from the Greek verb thlibo
which means “to press like grapes, to squeeze, to press firmly,
compressed, contracted way; metaphorically, to annoy, afflict,
anguish”. Thus, the narrow path is what leads us to practice
Jesus' teachings in a very concrete way: loving our enemies, not
practicing hypocrisy, accumulating treasures in heaven, among
other heavenly principles taught in the Sermon on the Mount
(Mt 5.39,48). 13
14. • 3. Wide door and spacious path.
The wide door and the spacious path symbolize a life without
commitment to Christ, according to the standard of the World.
This door receives many people who express beliefs and values
according to their vain way of living. A path that has seduced
many through the unrestrained pursuit of pleasure and ideas that
deny the Bible as our only rule of faith and conduct. They are,
therefore, a door and a path into which people enter who live
according to their own ideas (Jz 21.25) and who do not wish to
conform to the teachings of the Holy Scriptures (John 7.38).
14
15. The narrow gate and the narrow path represent a
life of commitment to Christ.
• SYNOPSIS I
15
17. 17
• 1. An open but difficult door.
The door to entry into the heavenly homeland is open. However,
there are many impediments for the human soul to cross it:
selfishness, an inflated ego, idolatry, among others. However, our
Lord taught that to take the path to heaven we must deny
ourselves, let what we are die in order to live life with Him so
that progressive and unspeakable glory results (Mt 16.24; Rm
6.6; Gal 5.24) .
18. 18
• 2. The wide door opportunities are attractive.
For many, the path of the narrow gate is not attractive, as the
wide gate offers a journey of pleasures, delights and debauchery.
However, those who walk this path are dominated by the
illusions of life, becoming entangled in a seductive fantasy. It is a
path of pleasurable attachment to the world and contempt for
God (1 John 2:15,16). Tragically, all who love the world will not
have the right to enter heaven (1 Cor 6.9,10; Gal 5.19-21).
Therefore, the Christian committed to the Gospel of Christ
knows that “the world passes away, and its lust; But whoever
does the will of God remains forever” (1 John 2:17).
19. 19
• 3. The reasons for the demands.
Unlike the wide door and the spacious path, the narrow door
and the narrow path require an inner transformation, a personal
decision and a willingness to go against the majority. Only those
who recognize themselves in Christ as a sinner (2 Cor 12.9) and
with a willingness to live a life directed by Him as a new
beginning (2 Cor 5.17) begin to walk the path of the narrow
gate. From this journey, the Gospel makes us walk in holiness,
follow in the footsteps of Christ and walk as He walked (1 John
2:6). Then, we will be ready to put down roots and face the
obstacles of our Christian journey (Luke 8:13,14).
20. Following the narrow path requires a willingness to
go against the grain of the majority.
• SYNOPSIS II
20
22. 22
• 1. Repentance of sins.
Through the words of the divine herald, John the Baptist (Mt 3.1-10),
the message preached by him to enter the Kingdom of God is
Repentance. John is a voice that echoes between the Old and New
Covenants, confirming the words of the Old Testament prophets, as his
message of repentance was the same preached by Isaiah and Jeremiah (Is
1.16,15; 55.7; Jer 7.3-7). For this reason, it is important to consider that
biblical repentance is not a merely emotional issue, but a willingness to
change one's mind and an exercise that involves the mental and moral
aspect of the sinner. Through the preaching and acceptance of the
Gospel, through the regenerating action of the Holy Ghost, the sinner
renounces sin, reorients his life and makes a resolution to leave the
spacious path and take the path that leads to eternal life.
23. 23
• 2. Confession of sins.
The ministry of John the Baptist was impressive, so that all of Judea and
the province of the Jordan went to him (Mt 3.5). Those who came to
John confessed their sins to be baptized. Now, the Bible says that all
have sinned and are separated from the glory of God (Rm 3.23).
Without man recognizing that he is a sinner, he will never understand
that he needs a Savior. In this aspect, personal confession of sins is a
new perspective that appears with the ministry of John the Baptist. In
Israel, confession was national and took place on a special day such as
the Day of Atonement (Nm 5.7). Through the life model of John the
Baptist, confession of sins became part of the Christian tradition. In this
way, the person confesses their sins (Ps 32.5) and affirms that they
believe in God, Powerful and Savior (Rm 10.9,10). Thus, when a man
acknowledges in confession that he is a sinner, he receives forgiveness of
his sins (Pr 28:13; 1 John 1:7).
24. 24
• 3. Bearing fruits of repentance.
For John the Baptist, baptism and confession alone would not be
the true proof of life change. It was necessary to present fruit in
life as the mark of sincere repentance. In Luke, we can
contemplate concrete fruits that John the Baptist expected from
those who repented: honesty, mercy, respect for authorities,
among others (Luke 3.11-14). This was proof that the person's
nature had truly been transformed. Therefore, a person who has
had a true encounter with Jesus will produce fruits worthy of
repentance, a new way of thinking and acting, a new style of life
(Mt 3.2; 21.29; Mk 1.15).
25. The true encounter with Jesus produces in the
believer fruits worthy of repentance.
• SYNOPSIS III

• CONCLUSION
At the moment he begins his journey with Christ, the Christian
must be aware that he has chosen the narrow path and the
narrow door to walk the path to heaven. This means that we
need to renounce self, our thoughts and desires, for Christ to
appear (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is only possible through true
repentance, confession of sins and the experience of
forgiveness.
