6. • BIBLE READING IN CLASS
John 3.1-8
1 – And there was a man among the Pharisees named Nicodemus, prince
of the Jews.
2 – This man went to Jesus at night and said to him: Rabbi, we know
that you are a teacher from God, because no one can do these signs that
you do unless God is with him.
3 – Jesus answered and said to him: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except
a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 – Nicodemus said to him: How can a man be born when he is old?
Can he perhaps enter his mother's womb again and be born?
6
7. 5 – Jesus replied: Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water
and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.
6 – What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is
spirit.
7 – Do not marvel that I said to you: You must be born again.
8 – The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its voice, but you do
not know where it comes from or where it is going; so is everyone who
is born of the Spirit.

8. • INTRODUCTION
This quarter, we will study the Christian’s Journey. To begin our
studies, we aim to understand the beginning of our journey with
Christ and how much we are graced with the presence of the
Holy Trinity on this journey. We will also conceptualize the New
Birth and study it as an experience coming from the Holy Ghost,
as the Scriptures present to us. Finally, we will show the
importance of the New Testament at the beginning of this
journey of faith.
8
11. • 1. Understanding both paths.
In human history, we have two paths: that of natural life and
that of life with Christ.
a) Human life. The first begins at the moment of our natural
birth. It may be long or short, but not eternal. This human
trajectory is marked by the stages of childhood, adolescence,
youth, adulthood and old age. It is also characterized by two
moments: birth and death. It is this kind of life’s journey that
Jesus refers to when he says, “That which is born of the flesh is
flesh” (John 3:6).
11
12. b) Life with Christ. Human life can become a wonderful journey
when we invite the Lord Jesus to be part of it. The new life with
Christ is the beginning of a new story, of true happiness and
fullness in the Spirit (Rm 8.2). In this life there are new purposes,
new thoughts and new hopes (Rm 12.2). After all, we became a
child of God. This is the kind of life journey our Lord refers to
when he says, “That which is born of the Spirit is spirit” (John
3:6).
12
13. • 2. The three companions on our journey.
When we receive Jesus as Savior, God becomes our Father (Eph 1:3-6).
Now we are cared for, instructed, and strengthened by Him. We have a
father-son relationship. In addition to the Father, we also have his Son as
the one who grants us victory against sin and all kinds of evil (1 Cor
15.57); and, because he loves us, he has granted us his life (John 3:16)
and leads us safely to his heavenly kingdom (Col 2:6,7). Finally, we now
have the third member of the trinity, the Holy Ghost as our helper and
comforter (John 14:26). Through Him, God performed the miracle of
the New Birth, transforming our fallen nature and turning us into His
legitimate children. All of this means being born of the Spirit or New
Birth (John 3:6; John 1:13; 1 Cor 15:50).
13
14. Human history comprises two paths: that of
natural life and that of spiritual life.
• SYNOPSIS I
14
16. 16
• 1. Why do we need the New Birth?
At the beginning of the dialogue between Jesus and Nicodemus,
the term “man” stands out. This masculine noun from the
Greek ἄnthrōpos, which means “man”, has a generic use in the
text and, therefore, its meaning includes all human beings (John
3.4). Thus, the Lord Jesus stated that Nicodemus needed to be
born again, a new birth directly from heaven. As a man, he was
in the fallen condition of all human beings “because all have
sinned” (Rom. 3:23). In this sense, every human being needs to
go through the process of regeneration, experience a divine
action within, that is, be born again (John 3.5; 20.22; 15.5; 2 Cor
5.17).
17. 17
• 2. Religion does not make people born again.
Nicodemus was a prince of the Jews. The inclusion of the term
“Pharisee” in the account shows that he was a man well rooted in the
Jewish religion. He deeply knew God, according to the monotheistic
tradition of Judaism, the teachings of the Law and the Prophets and the
history of his people. But it seems that his tradition did not offer what
his soul needed. That's why Nicodemus went to meet Christ, identifying
in Him the real power of God, as we can see in his words: “no one can
do these signs that you do” (John 3:2). Knowing well the heart of this
prince of the Jews, Jesus went straight to the point: “Except he is born
again he cannot see the Kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Therefore, the
new life that Nicodemus needed would only be found directly in the
powerful action of the Holy Ghost (John 16:7-11; Rom 8:5-7).
18. 18
• 3. The New Birth and its process.
The expression “again”, which means “from heaven” (John 3:31;
Gal 6:15; 1 John 3:9), shows that the new life with Christ, that is,
eternal life, generated through the Word (1 Peter 1:23) , comes
from above, from God and from no one else (John 1:13). To
explain this process of being born again, our Lord used two
terms: “water” and “Spirit”. With water, according to the context
of the Gospel of John, we can refer to the Old Law and,
symbolically, to its meaning (John 1.33; 4.7-14; 7.38,39). Now,
our Lord fulfilled the Law (Mt 5.17), so that when speaking of
the old order, the representation of water was assured; but
through the new order, the New Covenant, through the work of
the Holy Ghost, water would flow into eternal life (John 4:14).
19. 19
With the Spirit, our Lord makes the analogical use of
wind, from the Greek pneuma (spirit, wind). No one can
see it being born, nor where it goes, but they can feel it.
Similarly, life with Christ begins with regeneration (gennao
– being born) as a work of the Holy Ghost who
transforms people through faith in Christ. This process is
a miracle from above, a mystery of faith.
20. The walk with Christ begins with the advent of
the New Birth, the divine work of salvation.
• SYNOPSIS II

21. III. THE NEW TESTAMENT AND THE
CHRISTIAN’S PATH OF FAITH
21
22. 22
• 1. The New Testament.
The concept of the New Testament as Scripture is a gradual process in
the life of the Church. At first, it was not seen by the Church as a book,
but as a unit that made the difference between the Old Covenant (the
Law) and the New Covenant (the Gospel) with full fulfillment in Christ
(Gal 4.4). This understanding derives from biblical roots (2 Cor 3.6). In
this context, the word “alliance” gains relevance. Translated by the
Septuagint, from the Greek word diathéke, according to Jeremiah 31.31,
it has the meaning of ordination, dispensation and economy of
salvation. From Latin, the term testamentum carries the same descriptive
force as the term diathéke. Thus, from a canonical point of view, the
Old and New Testaments form the Christian's Holy Scriptures.
23. 23
• 2. The main theme of the New Testament.
The central theme of the New Testament is the person of Jesus
Christ. There are several characters presented in this sacred
document, but they all gain relevance only when they are related
to the shadow of our Lord. Everything comes back to the
person of Christ, since his ministry has a saving emphasis whose
main interest is to reconcile the world with God (Mt 1.21,23; Jn
1.14; 1 Tm 2.5).
24. 24
• 3. The importance of the New Testament in
the Christian’s journey.
The Old Testament has great importance for the people of God. The
Lord Jesus divided it, highlighting three categories that pointed to his
person: Law, Prophets and Writings (Luke 24:44). However, the Christian
must begin his journey of faith with the New Testament. This sacred
document reflects the development of divine revelation, involving the
life and ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, in which the entire plan
designed by God regarding our salvation unfolds. In the Old Testament
we have the promise; in the New, its fulfillment (Hb 1.1,2). In this
testament, we have the consummation of the Father's plan in Jesus for
human beings to be reconciled with Him and begin a new journey of
faith (2 Cor 5.19).
25. The New Testament is the Christian document
that must be part of the beginning of our journey,
as it reveals God's entire plan of salvation.
• SYNOPSIS III

26. 26
• CONCLUSION
The journey with Christ begins with the New Birth. It extends
through a long spiritual pilgrimage to the perfect relationship
with Jesus (Mt 16:24). On this pilgrimage, those who began a
new life with Christ can count on the presence of the Father, the
Son and the Holy Ghost. Thus, we will be guided by the words
of the New Testament that deal with the life, death and
resurrection of the Lord Jesus, on whom our faith is based.
27. 1. What is the new
life with Christ?
The new life with
Christ is the beginning
of a new story, of true
happiness and fullness
in the Spirit (Rm 8.2).
2. Who are the three
companions on the
Christian journey?
The Holy Trinity:
Father, Son and Holy
Ghost.
3. Explain the term
“man” according to
the lesson.
It is a term of generic
use in the text and,
therefore, its meaning
includes all human
beings.

28. 4. What does the
expression “again” mean
and, at the same time,
demonstrate?
The expression “again”
means “from heaven” and
demonstrates that the new
life with Christ comes from
above, from God and from
no one else.
5. Why should a Christian
begin his journey of faith
with the New Testament?
Because in this testament,
we have the consummation
of the Father's plan in Jesus
for human beings to be
reconciled with Him and
begin a new journey of
