Titanic came out later that year. It was meant to be director Hayao Miyazaki s last film before he
went into retirement, and is praised as one of his absolute masterpieces. Today, I will be critiquing
two articles that discuss aspects of Princess Mononokes themes and influences, one that relates
Shintoism to Miyazaki s narratives by Oscar Garza, and another that focuses on the icons found
throughout his filmography by Mohammad Amzad Hossain and Wei Hsin Fu.
First a quick summary: Princess Mononoke follows the last prince of the Emishi named
Ashitaka who, when defending his village from a demonic boar, is cursed to die. In order to lift
the curse, Ashitaka travels west and finds Iron Town, a mining settlement on the outskirts of a
divine forest. He meets their leader, Lady Eboshi, who is currently at war with the forest gods.
Disapproving of the violence that the town people partake in against the forest, Ashitaka seeks to
meet with the gods and their human daughter, San. The dwellers of the forest wish to kill all the
humans in an attempt to take back their home. Now Ashitaka must become a peace keeper and

The Adirondack Park is a significant location in the novel Adirondack Sundown. Graham Scott
and Sarah Waters were picnicking one day at Rockwood State Forest when Graham suddenly had
to go back to work, Sarah stayed behind to take pictures of the scenery and then, she was abducted.
Many places in the Adirondacks are very significant to the story. Some places in the Adirondack
Park that are in the novel are Kane Mountain, Rockwood State Forest and Old Forge.
South of the Adirondack Park is where Kane Mountain is located. Kane Mountain was formed by
glaciers during the ice age. The mountain is between several lakes, including Pine Lake and
Canada Lake. The hike to the top of Kane Mountain is moderate in difficulty. There are many trails
that exist. The most commonly used trail is the East trail departing from Green Lake Road.
Kane Mountain plays a significant role in the novel because a character named Kane Johnson, who

How can an atmosphere be so unbearable and cold, but evidently full of life and constant
growth? Set in an old, decaying basement, Theodore Roethke addresses this in the poem Root
Cellar. Life is clinging to and climbing over the dirty, damp, and dark possessions of the cellar.
Why is it possible that so much life is present in such a place of shadows? In Root Cellar , Roethke
uses imagery, diction, and tone to display that is possible for life to overcome unbearable
circumstances suggesting that nature is a truly dominant and powerful force.
First, Roethke uses a variety of natural imagery to illustrate the poor conditions of the root
cellar. The imagery is extremely concrete, which is illustrated through the use of sensory
language. By being inside the cellar, multiple senses are engaged, which ranges from smells,
sights, and surfaces to touch. Roethke writes that there were a congress of stinks (6) and then

Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado
In the Cask of Amontillado a short story by Edgar Allen Poe the protagonist of the story,
Montresor, is a very clever man. For instance, the story is told from Montresor s point of view and
it begins with Montresor talking about how he s going to get revenge on his friend, Fortunato. The
thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could; but when ventured upon insult, I vowed
revenge...I continued, as my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now
was at the thought of his immolation. Here Poe uses dramatic irony to show the readers that
Montresor is devising a plan to get revenge on Fortunato, and Fortunato isn t aware of what
