A Brief Note On Colorectal Cancer And Cancer
Colorectal cancer is one of the global leading diseases and it is the third most common causes of
death in both men and women in America. Approximately 1 in 12 Australians will develop
colorectal cancer in their lifetime, and according to Bowel Cancer Australia, individuals are at
risk if they are aged 50 years and over, have had an inflammatory colorectal disease or significant
family history of colorectal cancerpolyps.
Although there are various treatments for colorectal cancer, complications may arise. Post infection
caused by surgical damage to the mucosa of the intestine may occur. Furthermore, a previous study
indicated that although some chemotherapy regiment, such as FOLFOXIRI, can produce maximal
response in decreasing tumour size at high dosage, it can also produce side effects such as
neutropenia and diarrhoea because of the high toxicity level associated with the dosage of the
drugs. As a result, it has become a necessity for researchers to trial new methods, such as combining
drug regimen with surgery, to improve clinical outcomes from treatments in patients with colorectal
cancer.
It has been raised in the media that gut microbiota in individuals can provide an indication of the
development of colorectal cancer. Hence, using it as a screening method can allow early
interventions to prevent colorectal carcinoma. Although the media mentions using gut microbiota
analysis as a preventative screening method, it raises the question: What roles can gut bacteria

Why Was Henry Wirz Guilty
...and on the charge that the prisoner did with others to conspire to destroy the lives of soldiers
in the military service of the United States in violation of the laws and customs of war Guilty
were the words that soared out of Wallace s mouth at the end of the trial. It was then that Henry
Wirz was found guilty. Why? Why was he found guilty? This decision was based on the emotional
aspect of the witnesses, and not by the actual guilt. Not only my defense, but also the defense of
Wirz s attorney, Baker, the testimony of the defendant, Henry Wirz, shows that Wirz should not
have been found guilty. Henry Wirz ran Andersonville, one of the many Confederate prison camps,
which was located in Georgia. Andersonville opened in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Davidson, Jasper Culver, and Dr. John C. Bates were called to the stand to prove that Henry Wirz
was guilty. Fortunately, these three witnesses have testified Wirz as being not guilty.
One of the witnesses was James H. Davidson Davidson was a prisoner at the camp who was
called to the stand to testify about the dogs. He stated that the dogs in Andersonville were very
harmful and had wounded, or had even killed, some of the Union soldiers. When being asked
questions by Chipman, the attorney for prosecution, Davidson stated that the prisoners who
tried to escape were mauled by the dogs. He also said that Wirz watched and cheered as the dogs
were attacking the soldiers saying, get those Yankee bastards! Why should this be Wirz s fault?
Why? Perhaps Davidson himself was not so close to the dog attack, because he himself was not
attacked; therefore, he cannot prove that it is Wirz s fault for the dogs. The man that was
dragged into the camp could have, indeed, survived. No one, I repeat no one, has proof that that
man had been killed. Lastly, many of the men had wounds on their bodies; but, why are the dogs
to blame? Those wounds and scratches could have been caused by something else other than those
dogs. Not only did many of these deaths come from the dogs, but a lot of the deaths came from the
deadline.
The deadline was a border along the Andersonville camp; if an individual crossed the deadline,

Tobi Fryberg Review
Abstract
To summarize the demands of speech language pathologists treating individuals with right
hemisphere brain damage, Margaret Blake,Tobi Frymark, and Rebecca Venedictovb conducted a
review of the current literature available concerning communication treatments for these clients. A
review of their study highlights specific areas needed for further research as well as important
considerations that must be made when administering treatment. The study discusses important
factors such as cognitive ability and word association deficits which often impact treatment.
Critiquing the article provides an insight as to where more research is needed and illustrates the
depth of knowledge concerning current treatments. Keywords: brain damage, literature, ... Show

The five chosen studies were selected for review out of a potential 472 studies that were identified
to contain information regarding cognitive communication treatments for individuals with RHBD.
Meeting specific criteria for review was an important factor in the selection of the five studies.
Blake and colleagues (2012) selected the studies to include only those that contained information
regarding different sentence or discourse level treatment approach and reporting a wide range of
prosodic, expressive, receptive, and pragmatic outcomes (p.146). Information about these particular
treatments is highly relevant to the work of speech language pathologist working with individuals
with RHBD who exhibit deficits in the specified areas. The studies that were chosen had been
conducted between the years of 2002 through

Summary Of A Reality Of Their Own By Dave Zirin
The Shape of Dave Zirin s Argument
In the essay, A Reality of Their Own: Jameis Winston, Rape and Seminole Fandom at Florida
State, Dave Zirin argues that people should view Florida State s star quarterback Jameis Winston,
who was wrongly accused of sexual assault, as a model citizen because the school s code of
conduct and the court cleared him of any wrong doing. According to zirin, although no one knows
for sure if Winston is a rapist, many now know how Florida State University handled the situation.
Dave Zirin s argument can also lead to a question of issue regarding why American universities
struggle to resolve sexual assaults properly.
In the beginning of Zirin s essay he provided contextual information about Florida State s mascot.

Meaning that it all comes down to money. So in order to get money what do colleges and
universities do? They cover up. They hide and they try to erase the fact that their all star athletes
are bad people. For example, if Florida State chose to truly act upon the case of Winston fairly,
they would ve banned him out of the football team and he would ve had to face the consequences
of jail time along with being a registered sex offender. If this were to happen FSU would lose a
valuable player which could cause their chances of making it to the Rose Bowl Championships.
Furthermore, it could cause a decrease in student and athletes wanting to attend the university,
therefore leading to lower school funds due to less

Relief, Recovery, Regulation
Relief, Recovery, Regulation
When Franklin personally addressed the Democratic Party Convention to accept the nomination, he
was the first candidate to do so and thus received a lot of attention. These were the words from the
acceptance speech that set the tone for his campaign and his administration:
I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people. Let us all here assembled
constitute ourselves prophets of a new order of competence and of courage. This is more than a
political campaign; it is a call to arms. Give me your help, not to win votes alone, but to win in
this crusade to restore America to its own people. 1

While many of these programs were wasteful, they succeeded to some extent in keeping people out
of foreclosure, out of starvation, and propped up morale. I think they could have been more
successful had the Administration not shot itself in the foot with a perverse economic tightening in
1937.
Recovery
One of the best examples of a successful recovery program was the Tennessee Valley Authority
(TVA). This program was proposed by Senator George Norris 5 during the Hoover Administration.
Resurrected and expanded under Roosevelt, despite opposition from private utilities, The TVA
constructed and maintained dams, provided hydroelectric power where there was no electricity
before, and stimulated investment in the region. The TVA is one of the shining success stories of
the New Deal.
A less successful program was called the National Recovery Act (NRA). The NRA established a
minimum wage, set working hours, and attempted to regulate prices. The act invested the President
with vast authority to intervene in the market economy. One example was power to regulate aspects
of interstate commerce, a power that the Constitution invests in Congress. The act was voluntary to
business and riddled with bureaucracy.
In May 1935 the US Supreme Court, in Schechter Poultry Corporation
V. United States, unanimously ruled the NRA unconstitutional. In fact, 11 out of 16 of the

Vera Wang Advertising Analysis
Vera Wang is one of the most iconic designers in fashion today and this ad takes advantage of her
recognition. This image, most likely from a fashion magazine, promotes Vera Wang s dress line.
The advertisement uses three significant contrasts to draw the buyer in. First, the model in the
actual dress line. Second, the flourishing background the models are put in. It makes you think
about what the photographer was trying to portray. Lastly, the display case made the models are
standing in and around. The modelin the front draws in the buyer, but the case is see through,
allowing the viewer to see the model standing on the back side and part of the models arm to the
left. The image suggests that someone who wears Vera Wang
can have multiple styles and still feel
good in whatever type of style that is.
The greenery background gives the ad an interesting contrast. This is a nature setting, as implied
by the grass and plants. Most of this background is not very visible, as the models take up most
of the advertisement. The brightness of the plants suggest this photo was taken midday when the
sun was at its peak. It was taken with a shallow depth of field, meaning the background is blurred
and the main focus is on the objects in the front of the photo, The greenery is not very green, but
fades into the background. There are no animals in the trees in the back, maybe suggesting this
was taken in a place without a lot of wildlife, or the fact that there s no resources for these

How Hadoop Is An Apache Open Source Software ( Java...
Hadoop is an Apache open source software (java framework). It runs on cluster of commodity
machines and provides both distributed storage and distributed processing of huge data sets. It is
capable of processing data sizes ranging from Gigabytes to Petabytes.
Architecture :
Similar to master / slave architecture.
The master is the Namenode and the Slaves are the data nodes. The Namenode maintains and
manages blocks of datanodes. They are responsible for dealing with clients requests of data. Hadoop
splits the files into one or more blocks and these blocks are stored on datanodes. Each datanode is
replicated to provide fault tolerance characteristic of Hadoop. Default replicator factor is 3 which
can be configured.
Components:
1.Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS): It is designed to run on hardware which are less
expensive and the data is stored in it distributed. It is highly fault tolerance and provides high
throughput access to the applications that require big data.
2.Namenode: It manages the system namespace. It stores the metadata of data blocks. The
metadata is stored in the form of namespace image and edit logs on a local machine. The
namenode knows the location of each datablock on the data node.
3.Secondary Namenode: It is responsible for merging the namespace image and edit log to create
check points. This would help namenode to free up memory taken up by edits logs from the start to
the latest check point.
4.DataNode: Stores blocks of data and

Islamic Cultural History
Few phenomena have had as significant of an impact on modern culture as terrorism. Following
the rise of the Islamic State in 2014, acts of terror perpetrated by the would be caliphate have
headlined global news cycles, rife with displays of atrocity and a deadly ambition to create a
country ruled by extremist ideals. However, in the broader context of history, what will have the
most significant effect on cultural memory is not the fact that these terrorists and ideologues
attempted to form a state, but that it was one claimed to be inherently Islamic. The resulting culture
of fear, othering , and Islamophobia experienced across the developed world will cement the place
of the Islamic State in cultural history, even as the group itself... Show more content on

The media has played an unprecedented role in the phenomenon of the Islamic State, and will
ensure its continuing relevance in cultural history. Through extensive coverage of its actions, both
in the middle east and in the west, the Islamic State has generated a fear of terrorism unlike any in
recent history. Constant images of executions, IS flags, and videos of soldiers patrolling
captured cities are made inescapable by the prevalence of social media. This coverage ...has not
caused the change in the nature of acts of terror over the past decades but it has made it easier
for terrorist organizations to reach and instill fear in (most predominantly) the West (Galily et al.
1063). Recent evidence supports this, including a 2017 study that determined news reports on
terrorism can cause a fear of terrorism in those watching that was previously absent. (Sikorski et
al. 840). In addition, the fear caused by the inundation of media surrounding the Islamic State was
magnified by often unpredictable lone wolf attacks on western cities. Concerning this, Kaplan
and Costa remark that ...what seemed to have changed ... was not the likelihood of dramatic
terrorism on the scale of the 9/11 attacks so much as the specter of low level IS inspired terrorism
in the West (Kaplan and Costa 929). The knowledge that radicals could perpetrate attacks in major
cities like Paris and

Sour Dough Diet
Many Americans love the delicious, yet fattening, carbohydrate recognized as bread. Usually,
we all eat bread when it is stuffed with meat and cheese, but most can t resist the taste of certain
breads without the added accompaniments. Sour Dough bread, being a popular favorite, is
most commonly made by preparing your starter dough, feeding the starter dough, then finally
kneading and baking the loaves. The first step is making the starter dough. Before starting, make
sure you have a large, non metallic bowl for mixing. Making sure your bowls are non metallic
ensures that the dough will not ruin. Mix together dry yeast, two cups of warm water, and two
cups of all purpose flour. Once you have mixed all of your ingredients, obtain the mix with a
loose seal and leave the starter dough in a warm place to ferment for four to eight days and check
on it occasionally. Making sure the breadis well fermented will improve the quality of the dough.
Once the days have passed, the mixture is bubbly, and there is a pleasantly sour smell; the starter
dough is ready to be used. If the starter... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After you take the start er dough out of the refrigerator and leave it on the counter for at least an

flakes. Once the ingredients are mingled together, contribute the mix with the existing starter
dough. Now the dough is fed and the mushy mess will need to sit and warm to room temperature.
Once bubbles start to float to the top, you are finally ready for your last step. After leaving the
dough out for a day, combine six cups of bread flour, one cup of sugar, one tablespoon of salt, a
half cup of oil, one and a half cups of the starter dough, and a half cup of warm water until the mix
is thick. This combination will take you to the last

Everyone loves the advent of December because it means holiday season, considered to be the
best time of the year for most people. All of the decorations, food, experiences with friends and
family, and especially all of the songs make the time of year different from all the others. One of
the well known Christmassongs since it was written in 1862 by a Welsh composer named Thomas
Oliphant is Deck the Halls . Many variations were created by all different people, Alex G and
Tiffany Alvord s version of Deck the Halls was created in 2014 by a recent duet signed by many

Tiffany Alvord s cover version share the same lyrics, they both vary in their tone and instruments

Globalization Is Not Being Exploited By Capitalists Essay
At one time, Joan Robinson, a British economist had said, There is only one thing that is worse
than being exploited by capitalists. And that is not being exploited by capitalists (Nayyar 2006, 4).
The process of globalization has changed the ways of human interaction and the flow of goods and
services, people, information and ideas creating an interconnected single community that is
continuously uniting many nations across borders. The emergence of easier accessibility to
consumers needs has skyrocketed the production and consumption of goods and services. With a
greater demand comes greater production and the twenty first century capitalist economies have
changed patterns of free trade, rely on commodities and resources to be able to make profit and be
integrated into the open market, benefitting from further economic growth. This change in trade
patterns amongst different markets are based on product specialization and the division of labour
to create employment opportunities, income and surplus benefits are extended to other parts of the
globe. These patterns of trade encourage greater competition between markets and low cost goods
and services for consumers (Ebeling 2004, 3). However, the process of globalization has created
two different worlds of a winner and a loser; the included and the excluded. Comparing these two
worlds, one of them consists of industrialized countries that benefit from more prosperity, inclusion,

William Penn To The Kings Of The Indians Summary
Title: William Penn to the Kings of the Indians in Pennsylvania, History Society of Pennsylvania,
William Penn, 1681
Subject: William Penn had been given a large grant of land in America by the King on which he
wished to create his own colony. However, he knew that Native Americans already lived on that
land. That is why he sent a letter to the leader of the Indians, informing them that he wished to stay
there alongside the Native people and did not wish to fight them. Penn states that he is aware of the
injustices that have already been done to the Native Americans, and says that he is not the same as
the men who have brought harm upon those people. William Penn states that he has love and
respect for the Native Americans, and wishes to win over their friendship and trust. If any of the
Indians were offended by him or his people, Penn would speak with them until they came to an
understanding for receiving something in return. He wished for not only his people to be satisfied
with the way things were, but for the Native Americans to feel the same. Pen had sent over his

Brunelleschi s Influence To The Renaissance
In 1418, the town fathers of Florence realized they had to face a major problem. Il Duomo, the
cathedral that was built to best all others, was missing its roof. This cathedral had been constructed
in 1296 to commemorate Florence s new status as one of the most prosperous cities in Europe. The
cathedral would serve as a symbol of this new Florence. The town fathers had a vision of a
colossal dome that would rise to the heavens without support, pulling one s attention upwards. The
only obstacle was that the technology at the time could not accommodate a dome of the scale as
planned, with a diameter of 180 feet. A competition was announced with the prize of 200 florins,
which was more than a craftsman s two year wage at the time.

His biggest influence was most likely founding architecture as a separate and unique branch of art.
This established architects as more than just laborers and helped raise their status. Architects and
other artists in general received more credit for their work. Another similarly important influence
Brunelleschi had was popularizing the classical style by visiting and examining the ruins of Rome.
This helped repair the disintegrated reputation of Rome. This also established a new idea of beauty
that was achieved through harmony, symmetry and abiding by classical rules and styles. These
rules helped some artists to create individuality and to experience greater artistic freedom.
Brunelleschi s creation of new machinery was still impactful, but less so than the others. This
revolutionary technology ignited a new reliance on science and technology until the point where
math and the arts were inseparably intertwined. Brunelleschi s construction of the dome of Il
Duomo clearly shaped the Renaissance by raising the status of artists and architects, reviving the
classical style and creating a symbiosis of the arts and

slaves who had traveled with their masters in free states. In the Missouri Supreme Court s 1836
Rachel v. Walker ruling, it decided that Rachel, a slave taken to Fort Snelling and to Prairie du
Chien in Illinois, was free. By the early 1850s, however, sectional conflict had arisen again uglier
than ever, and most Missourians did not encourage the freeing of slaves. The Missouri Supreme
Court ruled against Scott in 1852. He then took his case out of the state judicial system and into the
federal judicial system by bringing it to the U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Missouri.
At this point in the case, Scott s possession had been transferred to John Sanford which changed
the case from Scott v. Emerson to Scot v. Sandford [different spelling due to a clerical error].
The case resumed in 1854 in the United States Circuit Court. Judge Robert W. Wells, quot;a
slaveholder who nevertheless regarded slavery as a barrier to progress, quot; presided over the
trial[2]. Though Scott was deemed to be a citizen, Sanford countered that even if Scott had gained
his freedom while residing in Illinois, he had regained his slave status upon returning to Missouri.
This defense proved successful and the jury decided in favor of Sanford.
The next step for Scott was to take his case to the highest tribunal in the country: the United States

Soft Body Caterpillar Robot More Efficient Than Current...
Adrian Hammer
Hypothesis:
Soft body caterpillar robot more efficient than current robots.
Topic:
To understand why the inspiration of the common caterpillar is used to create the next generation
of soft structure robots and what they will be used for once they are completed.
Description:
The caterpillar inspired robot is one of the first of its kind using a soft body to mimic that of its
inspired. This is one of the main major points of why I choose to pick this instead of any other
biology related topic simply because if it is the same size as a caterpillar it can be used in a vast
majority of different common day practices.
Relevance:
Since this a new improvement upon current robotic technology all its uses are currently unknown
but with the size of a caterpillar it can adapt to a variety of uses such as doctors. Currently
doctors use small cameras attached to a long wire to observe internals but now with this caterpillar
it may be possible to place this inside a body without the help of aesthetic in a few minutes instead
of a lengthy procedure.
Economically it can open up a variety of jobs in the robotics industry creating more work. This can
then be used to try new technologies, materials and replacing outdated technologies.
Ethically it can be used in a variety of medical practises. Just like stated above it can observe
organs and reduce surgery time. If someone had a blood clot inside them, instead of going into a
lengthy procedure of cutting someone open

Plagiarism Is Not The Right Way
Plagiarism has been around for a long time, nowadays it s easier to tell if someone plagiarizes.
Plagiarism is not the way to go it is not worth the risk and definitely has it consequences. Plagiarism
is an act or instance of using or closely imitating the thoughts of another author without
authorization and passing it as your own (Dictionary.com). Plagiarismis the work of those who are
not willing to put in the time and effort it takes to write original content. Which can be a form of
cheating which is not respectable and not good for the educating process at all. Instead of learning
the material and doing the research and required procedures for the assignment. Those who
plagiarize are cheating themselves in the long run, because they are not really learning the
information required for their class. Educators intend for students to complete the material
provided and trust them to complete their work the right way. I think we can all agree that writing
an essay isn t the most exciting thing to do, it takes a lot of thought and effort. However
completing an essay can be a very rewarding feeling. Knowing you worked hard researching and
taking the time to produce some good quality material can be motivating. Unfortunately those who
choose plagiarism prefer to take an easier route thinking they will not get caught. Taking someone
else s hard work and submitting it as their own is not right. In the end the consequences for
choosing plagiarism is not worth it.

Analysis Of The Book Jack The Ripper
The Complete Jack the Ripper By: Donald Rumblelow
Publisher: New York Graphic Society, Year: 1975, Pages: 217
This book is about the history of Jack the Ripper, it s about his life and how he killed. It also talks
about his life in the Whitechapel district was.
This book is about how he killed and what Jack the Ripper did, it tells about his life and what
happened (This book is out dated because we have discovered more since 1975). It also shows
lots of pictures, they weren t very good pictures but they were there. The book shows most things
he did. He killed at least 5 prostitutes and took apart their bodies. This terrorized the Whitechapel
district, he did this from August 7th to September 10th in 1888. It s a mystery on how he died
according to the book, but keep in mind the book is outdated.
It s a decent book but I didn t find it very interesting, it started out very slow but picked up during
the middle of it. I also didn t understand as much as I wanted too. I could understand how people
like the book though because of what it is. Jack the Ripper and the mystery behind him makes
him interesting just not my thing. Its successful because it was one of the best written books
about him of this time, and could be used to study on him. It s also successful because of this
reason, a lot of people have probably done a book report or a report in general on him and gained
interest for him.
The Complete Jack the Ripper is about a guy who killed five prostitutes and

Small Town Culture
Living in a small town is all about tradition. Every Friday night during the fall, the entire
community is at the football stadium, going crazy after every touchdown. You ve lived and gone
to school with the same people your entire life. The line between family and friends starts to blur.
You have to be careful who you date because they may actually be a distant cousin. Sadly, a small
townisn t the most liberal or open minded of places.
With a predominantly white population of approximately 3,700 people, Sweeny is the epitome of a
small southern town. We have one stoplight, and the main buildings in the town are the three
schools. You can imagine the discomfort and insecurity a closeted gay Hispanic teenager felt.
Once I began high school, I began noticing little things that didn t seem quite right. Most of them
centered on the fact that I seemed to find guys more attractive than girls. Ashamed of myself, I
pushed these feelings to the furthest reaches of my mind. Boys had girlfriends; girls had
boyfriends. It was the way things were meant to be; anything else was wrong and perverse. Despite
constant self reassurance that I was straight, I never really convinced myself. ... Show more content

Hip Hop Fashion Culture
For years, fashion has been a huge subculture of the hip hop industry. Emerging in the 1970s, hip
hop was created to promote experimentation and innovative ways of self expression. The fashion
culture of hip hop, also referred to as big fashion or street fashion, has consistently been complex
throughout its many different eras and styles. While fashion in hip hop is not constricted to a
specific trend or designs, it is well known for its overflow of different styles all influenced by
vibrant African American and Latino youths from the urban city streets of New York City later
followed by Los Angeles, Houston, Chicago, Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area, Detroit,

In the late 1980s, conscious rappers like KRS One and Queen Latifah mostly fashioned colors of
black, red, and green to pay homage to their African American ancestors. Dreadlocks, Kente cloth
hats, and Africa chains were also famous trends of this era. During the early 1990s, a unique
style of hip hop surfaced to popularity along with a new style of hip hop fashion as well. Pop
rap artists like The Fresh Prince popularized baseball caps and neon colored clothing. TLC and
Aaliyah emerged as deep iconic fashion influencers to female hip hop listeners. These women
wore oversized pants and big flannel button ups coupled with sport bras to add their own touch of
femininity to the male dominant industry. A pivotal moment in hip hop fashion was in 1984,
when Michael Jordan signed a multimillion dollar sneaker contract with Nike Athletics. This
sparked a surge of popularity in name brand sneakers and rap artists of all kinds were seen
wearing the latest Jordan s at many events and in music videos. Reebok, Carhartt, Timberlands,

Mental Crowd Simulators
Phase 5: Time now to practice your speech... You are now heading to the end of your preparation
process. This is where you will test your memory and also learn how to be relaxed the whole time.
Three (3) techniques are ideal for practicing your speech and memorizing it very effectively. The
first one is called the mental crowd simulator. To explain what it is in a few lines, we can say that
it can be compared to daydreaming. You know, just like when you daydream while your favorite
song is playing and at the same time, you are imagining yourself singing that song in front of a
huge crowd? Well, this technique works the same way, where you have already memorized your
speech, and you imagine yourself giving that speech to a large audience.
You can daydream anywhere and at any time (with closed or opened eyes), so that s a plus to the
technique. This is how you should basically proceed here; you will have to maintain your eyes, in
one direction facing the wall, a table ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, you are learning to give your speech by moving your eyes around slowly, as if you were
trying to draw an arch (with your eyes), around the crowd. When you re done drawing and arch
with your eyes (from left to right), you can move to your documents (containing your speech) at
the center of the stage (while still giving your speech) as if you were trying to know what comes
next (but you are not, you are just trying to move around the stage).
After you are done with your presentation, have your friends give you a marking (a grade) for
your practice overall. In other words, have them tell you and grade you

A Comparative Essay On Hope
A Comparative Essay on Hope In Troubled Times and
Summary
Written by Bob Goudswaard, David Van Heemst, and Mark Vander Vennen Hope in Troubled
Times: A New Vision for Confronting Global Crises, is a compelling book that captures the
attention of any reader especially when we live in such troubling times. The Forward was written
by none other than Christian Leader Desmond Tutu who opposed the apartheid in South Africa.
Despite the cheery title this book was no easy read what so ever. The book covered topics cush as
Worldwide Poverty, Environmental Degradation and Widespread Terrorism, just to name a few.
The authors of this book had an interesting approach to laying these topics out, going in to great
detail. Writing from a more realist approach the authors claimed not to be optimist, which was
evident and at times they seemed slightly pessimistic. Throughout the book the authors made
excellent use of many of our cultural problems pointing out their ideological roots. But before they
did that they took to time to explain in great lengths what ideology really is and how it came about.
It is more than just the dictionary definition: the body of doctrine, myth or beliefs that guide an
individual, social movement, institution, class, or large group (Dictionary.com). However, the
explained how good ideas with good intentions and legitimate goals can over time become
ideological without realizing it. Even goal like the systematic social and economic growth,

Jealousy In Eli Bodeen s The Compound
There are many actions the characters make in the book The Compound. For example, Eli
tricked his brother, Eddy, into going with their grandma to go get Eddy s meds so Eli could get
the first airplane ride. This action shows some competition and maybe a little jealousy. Some
jealousy because Eddy always got to do things first and was popular. Eli wanted to be the head of
the show this time. Because he did this, it caused Eddy and their grandma to be left out of the
compound (Bodeen, 2008, p. 2). If Eli didn t act like this, the entire familywould be in the
compound. There are many things that can be learned from this like, in life it is important to be

The day he did enter the yellow room was when he met 3 kids. Their names were Cara, Quinn,

supplements (Bodeen, 2008, p. 129). These kids were born because if they ran out of food at
some point, Eli s mom Clea, could produce milk. But the kids were Eli s siblings. The yellow
room is symbolic because it represents the experiments Rex created. The room locks in the
supplements. It shows protectiveness and danger for the supplements. Another reason it is
symbolic is it is where Eli saved the supplements and met them. On one hand it might have been
a good choice, but now I think it was a horrible idea and they should treat Lucas, Cara, and,
Quinn like part of the family. I think Rex and Clea made a bad decision. If Eli never walked in
that room, Eli would never have seen them or been close to them. This decision in the world
today wouldn t be noticed because many people become pregnant and send their children away.
Many don t take care of their children or they abuse them. This is definitely not right. This decision
may not have been right but the supplements had a home and were treated with care. Almost 5

Opelousas Massacre Research Paper
The Opelousas Massacre was a horrifying event that occurred on September 28, 1868, in Landry
Parish, Louisiana. The riot was sparked by conflict between black freedmen and whites over the
political control of the state of Louisiana. This resulted in a massive killing of blacks as whites
had the overwhelming advantage in numbers and weapons. What s most interesting about this case
is the mystery surrounding the accounts of deaths. No one can approximately confirm how many
people were killed in this massacre. Some sources identify as few as 30 people killed. Other
sources estimate killings to over 300 people. The Opelousas Massacre was one of the deadliest riots

In Finding Nemo, the two characters the movie is about are very special. In a way, I can

Operation Anaconda Case Study Analysis
Operation Anaconda Case Study When it comes to succeeding at anything, it is important to plan,

lives and the success of the mission depend on it. This was not the case however, during a fight
called Operation Anaconda. The purpose of this paper is to point out what went wrong with the
lack of planning, coordination, rehearsal, and preparation between Air and ground communications,
and how it proved to be critical during Operation Anaconda. The ending results were a delayed

Major Mark Davis conducted extensive interviews on this topic with air, ground, and special
operations commanders, staff officers, and other forces that participated in Operation Anaconda. In
his research, Davis found some major problems had occurred that caused a failure in coordination
efforts. The first error Davis sighted was that the DOD failed to establish proper command
structures and relationships needed for integration among the systems (MacPherson 2005, p. 350).
This made it difficult for air and ground forces to communicate among each other when the battle
was underway. Davis also sites that U.S. Central Command Chief Franks, made a costly decision to
command the war from his office in Tampa, Florida. He was 7,000 miles and 10 time zones away
from the battle front. Chief Franks believed that rather than move himself and his unit, would speed
up the operating progress and not slow down the mission. Franks and his command relied on video
phone conferences instead of personal communications, which led to limited communications.
Another problem was that Franks gave lists of plans to be carried out rather than one battle plan.
Also, because of the large numbers of independent units that participated, it was impossible for
Franks to maintain communication presence and coordinate over this large command structure.
This ultimately left decision making in the hands of CENTCOM staff

Truth and Troop Hardships in a Chapter of The Things They...
Throughout Tim O Brien s short work How to tell a true war story O Brien has two reoccurring
themes. One is of the desensitization of the troops during their hardship regarding the events of the
Vietnam War, and the other is of the concept of truth. Truth may seem simple enough to explain, but
is in fact endowed with many layers. The story is chalked full of contradictions, as well as lies, and
embellishments, and yet O Brien claims that these are the truth. The truth, whether it be war or
society s, is in fact a concept that can be conveyed many times and in many ways. Whereas each is
independently untrue, the combined collaboration of these half truths is in essence the only real
truth.

Since the morale and the emotional tolerance of the troops has been pushed to cope with
unbearable times, they may have to insert more facts that are completely false, so that not only
does the listener feel, but the story teller feels as well. All you can do is tell it one more time,
patiently, adding and subtracting, making up a few things to get at the real truth, (684) or feeling.
So in essence, this embellished half truth of a story is as true as the facts from a history book
bringing us one step closer to the ultimate truth.
The personal witnessing of events is a critical point of view in telling a true story. It may not be the
entire truth, but it is the truth, as it seemed to the individual. The ideas get mixed up; you tend to
miss a lot. And then afterward, when you go to tell about it, there is always that surreal feeling of
what seemed to happen, which makes the story seem untrue. But in fact represents the truth exactly
how it seemed. (677) Such as is the case of Curt Lemon s death. Rat Kiley was having a good time,
laughing with his best friend when Lemon stepped into the sunlight. In that instant he must have
thought that the sunlight had killed him. But if I could ever get the story right...then you would

The Mayo Clinic
1.As per the Mayo Clinic the symptoms that the patient encountered is related to a pituitary
adenoma, due to the tumor pressure (www.mayoclinic.org). The visual disturbances and headaches
indicate an increase growth, which causes pressure to the surrounding area. The weight gain and
increase in shoe size is caused by an increase production in growth hormone. Excess production in
growth hormone can cause enlarged hands and feet.
2. The pituitary adenoma itself may put pressure on the remaining normal part of the pituitary gland
and limit or destroy its ability to produce hormones appropriately (Stewart Vance). With the increase
in tumor pressure the patient may experience nausea and vomiting. The pituitary adenoma may
cause body hair loss, sexual dysfunction, increase frequency and increase amount of urination. The

Plate Tectonics, And The World
Plate Tectonics,
And their relation to the world.
___
By Jillian Abreu
There are many ways that earthquakes, plate boundaries, volcanoes, seafloor spreading, the Earth s
core, convection currents, and subduction connect to each other, but the main way they are all
connected is by plate tectonics. It all starts with plate tectonics. A theory by Alfred Wagner said that
Pangaea, which is a land mass of all the continents combined, had been moved by continental drift
to form the positions our continents are in now. This led to the theory of plate tectonics. This theory
stated that pieces of the Earth s lithosphere are in slow, but constant motion, driven by convection
currents in the mantle. A reason that backed up this theory was... Show more content on

The mantle is one of many layers of the Earth s core. As you can see from the picture on the left,
the first layer is the Earth s crust, which compared to earth, is like a sheet of paper wrapped
around a basket ball. The next layer is the lithosphere. This layer is broken into plates, better
known as the tectonic plates mentioned earlier. The asthenosphere comes next, which is weak
compared to the lithosphere. Since the layer is hotter, the layer is more soft. As we get closer to
the center, we look at the mantle. The mantle is made of thick, solid rock. The next layer is the
outer core. This core contains of liquid magma with much iron and nickel. Lastly, there is the inner
core. This layer is so hot that the heat melts metal ores into liquid magma. In this mantle, there are
convection currents. Heat from the core causes convection currents to slowly move the Earth s
crust around. All over the crust s surface, crust is destroyed, and reformed. All plate boundaries
movements are moved by convection currents in the mantle. At the boundaries between plates,
magma is able to force its way to the surface and escape as lava. There are three different types of
plate boundaries known as convergent, divergent, and transform.

The Case Against Perfection By Michael Sandel
In Michael Sandel s essay, The Case Against Perfection, he starts by wondering if genetic
engineering is moral. He used Dolly the cloned sheep as an example of bioengineering that could be
used on humans in the future. He then compares it to designer children, children whose parents
choice their genes for them, and points out that similar arguments that can be made against both of
them.
Sandel talks about why we have a problem with medical and genetic enhancements, using examples.
The first is muscle enhancement. Using the research of H. Lee Sweeney, of the University of
Pennsylvania, on muscle repair and strengthen that was used on mice as an example, Sandel shows
the potential of genetic engineering advancements. The second was about memory enhancement.
Some research was mentioned about inserting memory linked gene into mice embryo makes them
smarter. Sandel focuses more on the market for memory enhancing drugs because the market is a
better indication of what people would do with improved memories. There is already a way to
make children taller; human growth hormone is given to children with a hormone deficiency to help
them grow to normal size, but some parents want to use it on their normal children to make them

The Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)
In the art and literature memorializing the Civil Rights movement, no one individual is more
prominently represented than Martin Luther King Jr. . He is remembered in books, statues, and
even streets bearing his name in almost every city. One historian said, We trapped King in romantic
images... frozen his legacy in worship. King has become the martyr of the Civil Rights Movement
and his legacy has thus overshadowed the legacy of the other activists and groups who helped move
the Civil Rights movement forward, including the Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee,
an organization created by southern black youth. Though King s actions were powerful tools in the
push for racial equality, his efforts were only a part of the overall impetus driving the United States
towards equality. The Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee ( SNCC ) led activism in a
community based, long term protest fashion. At the same time the Southern Christian Leadership
Council ( SCLC ), the group led by Dr. King, used a media powered and more presentation based
protest method to rally Americans at the national level. Towards the end of the Civil Rights
Movement SNCC became more radical in its approach, eventually leading to its own demise, while
the SCLC stayed religiously peaceful. The different ideas and sometimes contradicting actions of
the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committeeand the Southern Christian Leadership Conference
eventually helped lead to the racial equality as we know it

hip hop Essay
Have you ever heard someone say, quot;I hate all music. quot;? Lately though music has been
criticized for corrupting teen s minds. Hip Hop is being blamed for all the crimes and murders in
cities all over America and heavy metal is being blamed for giving teens only dark images and
thoughts in their minds.
First we must ask what Hip Hop is to us or to others, who simply don t know or may never feel
our movement in society. This form of poetry and story telling has took growth from within a

Whether it is to force a change or to create something new deviance is at a strong high. At the dawn
of a new millennium some of society feel the need to express themselves better then the regular
norms and leave our mark on the world. As they say the young ones has more to teach then there
is to learn. If this is so then why is that no one listens to us, but instead they condemn us saying
we are nothing but trouble. The challenges that we are given to don t meet our satisfaction, and
this is why we are stubborn because no one listens to words instead society tries to fix our vision
by drowning our thoughts. Society is often perceived as a rich and fashionable social class
depending on how you want to see it, but to us its just normal people with enough to buy
themselves a mask to hide away from conformity, why hide yourselves, when the hip hop culture
teachers you to be out spoken and strong within yourselves.
The phenomenon of hip hop has spawned a new way of dressing, acting and speaking adopted by
young people, especially males. Hip hop and its music and speech patterns known as hip hop or
rap or gangsta rap has moved out of the ghettos and into suburban middle class neighborhoods,
especially among the young adult of all races in those neighborhoods. Finally, how hip hop/rap

The Liberties, Ideologies, And Effects Of Hacktivism
This paper discusses the liberties, ideologies, and effects of hacktivism. Hacktivism, is the
combination of hacking and activism, and is where a hacker creates a technology centered
disturbance with a political or social motive. Unlawful hackers typically cause cyber damage for
amusement, or monetary gain. While traditional hackers are perceived as criminals, hacktivists are
a transgressive group. Cyberterrorism is the most extreme version of hacking, where the goal is to
cause permanent damage. There are benefits to hacktivismsuch as, anyone can log on and share
their opinion, regardless of their location or position. However, some forms of hacktivism may be
closer to cyberterrorism, where there may be a malicious intent. Controversy... Show more content

In reality, hackers are a variety of people, with a range of reasons for what they do. Hacking began
in the late seventies and early eighties out of curiosity. Quickly, people began to realize the potential
for destruction through cyber attacks. From 2008 to 2012, the hacktivist group Anonymous, became
prevalent, because pretty much any amateur with a cause what kind of cause could join
Anonymous.. But after several group figureheads were arrested, the general public was deterred
from participating this hacktivist group.
From 2012 to the present, the door opened for hacktivist specialists beyond Anonymous, to cause
destruction. Hacktivism has shifted from large amounts of amateurs causing minimal damage, to
small amounts of hacking specialists causing tremendous amounts of damage. Due to the fact
that the Internet is largely privatized, it is very hard for hacktivists to get their point across to a
large number of people without breaking the law. So, a free speech space needs to be established
online to ensure that everyone has a chance to speak their mind on a digital sidewalk. The
extreme side of hacktivism is cyberterrorism. Terrorist groups like ISIS have begun to hire
specialists to wage cyberwar for their religious and political gain. The Internet battlefield has
become just as important as a physical one.
However, not all hackers are terrorists, criminals, or even hacktivists. Some hackers take up

Guns Should Not Be Forbidden
Guns should not be forbidden! Firearms provide people a sense of protection, many people
seem to feel safer if firearms are being contained in the house , although about 40% of people
both male and female disagree with this. The race that believes in this the most is the white race
at 45%, then followed up by hispanic race at 34%, finally the blacks at a 32%. These are just
statistics but more studies show different results. People argue with the fact that the police can
protect us. Other people say that this is partially true mainly because the police are not able to
everywhere at once so this is why some people take it upon themselves to get guns and use it to
protect their loved ones from harm. Many people say that forbidding guns will stop shootings.
Although this might be true how would this stop a criminal from buying a weapon. When what
they are doing is also illegal? Guns should be forbidden? If that happens what else will criminals
think of to kill innocent people, before guns had been put into easy access many of the killings we
due to bomb explosions. Guns being forbidden would be in good desires but it won t cause good
things to happen, this might even cause an (angrily fight against unfair authority) among the people.
These reasons are why many people argue about blocking/forbidding guns because it provides a
sense of protectionand freedom, people get this sense of freedom because they are being legal and
owning weapons used for protections although some people

More Than Modest Proposal to Solve the Ever Growing Traffic Troubles
On average, an American commuter spends around 30 hours per week sitting in traffic going to
and from the job that they may or may not love. Commuters in some cities like Washington DC,
that is both near and dear to our hearts, can spend roughly 60 hours per week stuck in traffic. Not
only is time wasted wasted while commuting, but the gas that we constantly fill our cars up with
may as well be flushed down the drain. Following the gas that is going down this metaphorical
drain here, is a ridiculous amount of money from an innocent commuter s wallet. Additionally, time
wasted while commuting could ve been time well spent with one s family or even with one s pets.

Because there are no drivers of the pods, there is zero chance of any casualties caused by drunk
drivers, or by drivers who are texting or plugging information into their GPS. These pods will
eliminate any chance of pedestrians or animals getting hit due to the sensitive sensors that will be
placed in each pod. Though there are alternate means of transportation such as carpools, buses, or
simply walking, these alternatives can be just as problematic as cars themselves. With carpools, we
still run the risk of drivers that are not paying full attention to the road because they are paying
more attention to the members of their carpool. Though with the intent of conserving gas,
carpools will still pollute our fresh air with the harsh chemicals found in gas. Buses are more or
less a large scale carpool. Buses may seem to promote mass transportation of people, they are
very costly because drivers must be paid and money must be spent on gas. Not to mention that
buses can be extremely dirty, whereas the pods are self sanitized. Not only will the Pod System
immediately solve the present issue of traffic and the load of side effects that come with it, the Pod
System brings many more positive long term effects. For starters, the reduced commute time now
allows working Americans to spend more time with their families and other loved ones. Also, these

United States Iranian Negotiations
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action has been regarded as the biggest diplomatic failure in the
United States history. While this seems to be an over sensationalized statement, analyzing the
dispute system design, cross cultural negotiation, and resistance points of the deal, may shed further
insight on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and how the United States resolves conflict with
Middle Eastern nations.
Historical Context
The relations between the United State s and Iran were amicable throughout the post World War II.
In entering the Cold War, the United States negotiated the Baghdad Pact in which an alliance
between, Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan was formed. During this era, President Nixon encouraged the
Shah of Iran to develop a nuclear program and provided the funding to Iran s energy sector. The
United States maintained a close partnership with Iran until, the Islamic Revolution in February of
1979. The revolution overthrew the Shah of Iran and Ruhollah Khomeini became the new supreme
leader of Iran. Immediately following the revolution, Iran engaged in a war against Iraq in the
early 1980s. With a new balance of power, tensions grew between the U.S. and Iran. During this
time, Iran held 52 Americans hostage in an attempt to negotiate with the United States; however,
after the Iranian hostage crisis, the United States no longer saw Iran as an ally.
After the Iranian Revolution, Khomeini sought to increase Iran s nuclear

As an example from The Drummer Boy of Shiloh by Ray Bradbury, In the April night, more than
once, blossoms fell from the orchard trees and lit with rustling tops on the drumskin. At
Midnight a peach stone left miraculously on a branch through winter flickered by a bird, fell
swift and unseen. Struck once like panic, which jerked the boy upright (Bradbury 318). Already
stated from the text is how the literature information is not accurate. Nothing from this is facts
from the Civil war. Throughout the text it tells a story from that time and what it could be like,
the actual story does not have the basic facts as would a informational text would. On the other
hand, from an informational text, Battle of Shiloh , The Battle of Shiloh began at sunrise on April
6, 1862 the Sabbath as 44,000 Confederate soldiers swooped down on an unsuspecting Union
Army encampment near Pittsburgh Landing, a nondescript hog and cotton steamboat dock on the
Tennessee River. This is a clear fact with numbers involved. So this tells the reader what was
going on and does not have any made up people to fill in the story. It is just simply what had

Clara Machumann If You Love For Beauty s Sake Analysis
The composer I chose is Clara Wieck Schumann. The piece that I chose to be analyzed is called
If You Love for Beauty s Sake . Clara Schumann was born in 1819, she is also known as one of
the most talented musicians in the Romantic era. Being a skilled pianist at such a young age, she
excelled throughout her career. Some people only know her as the wife of Robert Schumann, who
was also a famous composer in this era. Like Robert, she composed her own music. Clara went
through tough obstacles in order to obtain her status. There are many aspects of her life that
influenced her and the person she became.
To continue, Clara s husband Robert Schumann was unable to compose music after a few years.
This is the time that she stepped to make both of their music. Eventually, Robert was diagnosed
with depression and had to be taken to a mental asylum. This specific event was very heartbreaking
to her and her family. Clara Schumann ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Clara being young at the time certainly did not persuade society that she was as skilled and
determined as she was. During this era, women had to prove their quality of music was
extraordinary. Women were expected to raise a family, not compose music. It was certainly not
common at the time to see a woman being a musician. Society was trying to tell her that she was
not important enough to go through with her passion. Clara got well known musicians to take
her seriously and persuaded them that women could be gifted in music. Clara fought through
many assumptions of her and rose to the top. After she became known for being an appreciable
pianist, society and male musicians during the period started to see her as an equal. Clara was in
a musical society that was entirely conquered by men, getting their praise was a very great point in
her life. In the end, she raised any expectations that were ever given, becoming one of the first
women to go on an international tour for her

The egocentric self takes on the idea that each individual, as an aware and distinct person, is
responsible for their actions. As such, the individual possesses intrinsic qualities such as generosity,
integrity, or beauty. However, for the sociocentric self, no individual possesses the intrinsic
qualities; generosity, integrity, or beauty can only apply to social situations (i.e. rather than the man
is generous, for the egocentric self, the sociocentric self would see he gives money to his friends ).
Provide one reason why anthropologists prefer to use the ethnographic method. To avoid bias that
can emerge from an armchair approach, anthropologists can conduct their own research through the
ethnographic method and collect vital information through surveys and questionnaires themselves
in the ethnographic method. Participant observation allows for in depth immersion in the lives of
the particular group to understand the meanings these people ascribe to their existence, allowing
the anthropologist to see others from their point of view. Identify and briefly explain two challenges
in doing fieldwork. Fieldwork requires funding and permission; anthropologists require sponsorship
from the government or other external benefactors. The application process to receive funding from
the government is also highly competitive, meaning that anthropologists

Prenatal Testing Persuasive Speech
A mother is in the hospital and she has just given birth to a handsome baby boy. However, she
did not know that her little boy would be born with Tay Sachs disease. Tay Sachs is an inherited
disease that destroys neurons in the brain and spinal cord. As the mother s child gets older, he
will suffer from the loss of his ability to use his motor skills. Eventually, he will lose his hearing
and vision, and could possible obtain seizures; he will probably not live past early childhood. But
what if this tragedy could be stopped? What if there were a solution to all of this suffering? There
is a solution, and the solution is called prenatal testing. Prenatal testing is a test that can be done on
the unborn child to detect things such as birth defects... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first way that prenatal testing can be done is through something called a prenatal diagnostic
test. In general, it is the diagnostic procedures, such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling,
that people think of when they hear the term prenatal testing, (Press 1). Amniocentesis is when
doctors take a sample of the fluid that surrounds the baby in the uterus to determine certain genetic
disorders or chromosomal abnormalities. Chorionic villus sampling is when doctors take cells
from projections on the placenta to also discover any genetic disorders or chromosomal
abnormalities. These processes are considered invasive because they are putting objects that could
potentially hurt the baby into the protective area surrounding the baby. These ways of prenatal
testing come with a very negative feeling because they could possibly injure the baby, and the
word invasive is attached to a very negative connotation. However, these options can find more
abnormalities and diseases than non invasive prenatal testing. NIPT accurately diagnoses Down s
syndrome, Edward s syndrome, Patau syndrome, Turner s syndrome, and numerical chromosome
aberration and cannot detect other chromosomal anomalies, (Ryu Kim 1). Even though this is
true, NIPT is still a very beneficial option to the mother and unborn child. NIPT usually uses a
DNA sample to determine chromosomal abnormalities that could lead to things such as Down s
syndrome. The procedure is done by the doctors taking a sample of the mother s blood to
determine what types of diseases and disabilities the baby will have. Many people like this type of
prenatal testing because it is not detrimental to the baby, or mother s health. Studies investigating
the acceptability of NIPT suggest that pregnant women find it preferable because the standard
screening is associated with more uncertain results and

The Depression Of Manic Depression
For my research paper, I decided to look into Manic Depression. I have chosen to write about this
topic because I have been personally dealing with this disorder since about eight years old.
Manic Depression is usually referred to as Bipolar Disorder, but when I tell someone that I am
Bipolar, they just think that it means I get angry easily. People seem to take me more seriously
when I refer to it as Manic Depression. I used to have to take a wide variety of medications and
go to counseling when I was younger because I was having struggles with suicidal urges.
Recently it has gotten significantly worse since the death of my father due to a stroke in 2012.
This is a very serious topic for me because it has made and will continue to make my life more
difficult than it needs to be. Manic Depression first started to get looked into in Greece during the
1st century by Aretaeus of Cappadocia. The research he did was not acknowledged for many
centuries after. The terms manic and depressive come from the ancient Greek terms mania and
melancholia. The ancient Greeks and Romans learned that lithium could be used to treat the
manically depressed people by bathing with lithium salt. In this era, it was very common for the
deeply religious dogma of the time to execute people that suffered from bipolar disorder or any
other mental disorders. During the 17th century, a book named The Anatomy of Melancholy was
written by Robert Burton. The book covered different forms of treatment for

Who s For The Game By Jesse Pope Essay
Patriotism has been defined as the cultural attraction and devotion to ones homeland. Eager
young men lined the streets, waiting for their turn to show their devotion to their country, by
signing up for World War 1. As the war progressed, views on Patriotism changed. Different views
on patriotism were expressed throughout the war using poetry and media. There was a trending
pattern of soldiers who were eager to sign up, egged on by the guilt tripping propaganda spoon
fed to them by government controlled media. The war trudged on and soldiers faced the true
struggles of war. Realisation hit them, and they started to question whether the lives of their
friends and themselves may not be worth defending their country. The popular view of war at
the time is reflected in Jesse Pope s poem Who s for the Game? The strong patriotic views
favoured during World War 1 are portrayed in this poem. Jesse Pope was an admired
propagandist. She wrote dynamic poems and stories to entrap people into the belief that signing up
for the Great War was an honour, and a manly thing to do. In her well received poem Who s for the
Game? she uses rhetorical questions to make men question why... Show more content on

contrast to Jesse Pope s patriotic, propagandist poetry. Today, joining the army, fighting overseas is

The Problem Of A Free Lunch
There s no such thing as a free lunch a very common saying in Economics because it emphasizes
that every decision requires a trade off, and although one person may be getting a deal there is
always another side to the story. John Komlos, a well respected Economist, felt economics students
left their introductory classes under the impression that in the real world, perfect competition and
efficiency are very common in the market, with few market failures, and government intervention
in the economy is generally bad and leads to losses (2). In theory and for in class examples this
view of the economy is very straight forward and makes teaching easier. However, in the real
world; there is another side of the story. Free markets do have downsides and need some
government regulationalongside being guided by morals. Americans pride themselves extensively
on being free and letting the people choose how to live, but should everything in our country be left
up to the public? The free market has the potential to be an efficient and positive system for all
those involved. Theoretically, consumers make themselves heard through their purchasing power,
this creates competition and ensures companies supply only quality products for fair prices (1).
Unfortunately, creating competition also has a Darwin effect on the producers(1). Suddenly,
rivalries are formed and making the highest profits becomes the sole purpose of the company. The
importance of worker safety, environmental

  • 2. A Brief Note On Colorectal Cancer And Cancer Colorectal cancer is one of the global leading diseases and it is the third most common causes of death in both men and women in America. Approximately 1 in 12 Australians will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime, and according to Bowel Cancer Australia, individuals are at risk if they are aged 50 years and over, have had an inflammatory colorectal disease or significant family history of colorectal cancerpolyps. Although there are various treatments for colorectal cancer, complications may arise. Post infection caused by surgical damage to the mucosa of the intestine may occur. Furthermore, a previous study indicated that although some chemotherapy regiment, such as FOLFOXIRI, can produce maximal response in decreasing tumour size at high dosage, it can also produce side effects such as neutropenia and diarrhoea because of the high toxicity level associated with the dosage of the drugs. As a result, it has become a necessity for researchers to trial new methods, such as combining drug regimen with surgery, to improve clinical outcomes from treatments in patients with colorectal cancer. It has been raised in the media that gut microbiota in individuals can provide an indication of the development of colorectal cancer. Hence, using it as a screening method can allow early interventions to prevent colorectal carcinoma. Although the media mentions using gut microbiota analysis as a preventative screening method, it raises the question: What roles can gut bacteria ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Why Was Henry Wirz Guilty ...and on the charge that the prisoner did with others to conspire to destroy the lives of soldiers in the military service of the United States in violation of the laws and customs of war Guilty were the words that soared out of Wallace s mouth at the end of the trial. It was then that Henry Wirz was found guilty. Why? Why was he found guilty? This decision was based on the emotional aspect of the witnesses, and not by the actual guilt. Not only my defense, but also the defense of Wirz s attorney, Baker, the testimony of the defendant, Henry Wirz, shows that Wirz should not have been found guilty. Henry Wirz ran Andersonville, one of the many Confederate prison camps, which was located in Georgia. Andersonville opened in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Davidson, Jasper Culver, and Dr. John C. Bates were called to the stand to prove that Henry Wirz was guilty. Fortunately, these three witnesses have testified Wirz as being not guilty. One of the witnesses was James H. Davidson Davidson was a prisoner at the camp who was called to the stand to testify about the dogs. He stated that the dogs in Andersonville were very harmful and had wounded, or had even killed, some of the Union soldiers. When being asked questions by Chipman, the attorney for prosecution, Davidson stated that the prisoners who tried to escape were mauled by the dogs. He also said that Wirz watched and cheered as the dogs were attacking the soldiers saying, get those Yankee bastards! Why should this be Wirz s fault? Why? Perhaps Davidson himself was not so close to the dog attack, because he himself was not attacked; therefore, he cannot prove that it is Wirz s fault for the dogs. The man that was dragged into the camp could have, indeed, survived. No one, I repeat no one, has proof that that man had been killed. Lastly, many of the men had wounds on their bodies; but, why are the dogs to blame? Those wounds and scratches could have been caused by something else other than those dogs. Not only did many of these deaths come from the dogs, but a lot of the deaths came from the deadline. The deadline was a border along the Andersonville camp; if an individual crossed the deadline, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A review of their study highlights specific areas needed for further research as well as important considerations that must be made when administering treatment. The study discusses important factors such as cognitive ability and word association deficits which often impact treatment. The five chosen studies were selected for review out of a potential 472 studies that were identified to contain information regarding cognitive communication treatments for individuals with RHBD. Meeting specific criteria for review was an important factor in the selection of the five studies. Blake and colleagues (2012) selected the studies to include only those that contained information regarding different sentence or discourse level treatment approach and reporting a wide range of prosodic, expressive, receptive, and pragmatic outcomes (p.146). Information about these particular treatments is highly relevant to the work of speech language pathologist working with individuals with RHBD who exhibit deficits in the specified areas. • 5. Summary Of A Reality Of Their Own By Dave Zirin The Shape of Dave Zirin s Argument In the essay, A Reality of Their Own: Jameis Winston, Rape and Seminole Fandom at Florida State, Dave Zirin argues that people should view Florida State s star quarterback Jameis Winston, who was wrongly accused of sexual assault, as a model citizen because the school s code of conduct and the court cleared him of any wrong doing. According to zirin, although no one knows for sure if Winston is a rapist, many now know how Florida State University handled the situation. Dave Zirin s argument can also lead to a question of issue regarding why American universities struggle to resolve sexual assaults properly. In the beginning of Zirin s essay he provided contextual information about Florida State s mascot. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Meaning that it all comes down to money. So in order to get money what do colleges and universities do? They cover up. They hide and they try to erase the fact that their all star athletes are bad people. For example, if Florida State chose to truly act upon the case of Winston fairly, they would ve banned him out of the football team and he would ve had to face the consequences of jail time along with being a registered sex offender. If this were to happen FSU would lose a valuable player which could cause their chances of making it to the Rose Bowl Championships. Furthermore, it could cause a decrease in student and athletes wanting to attend the university, therefore leading to lower school funds due to less ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Relief, Recovery, Regulation Relief, Recovery, Regulation When Franklin personally addressed the Democratic Party Convention to accept the nomination, he was the first candidate to do so and thus received a lot of attention. These were the words from the acceptance speech that set the tone for his campaign and his administration: I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people. Let us all here assembled constitute ourselves prophets of a new order of competence and of courage. This is more than a political campaign; it is a call to arms. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While many of these programs were wasteful, they succeeded to some extent in keeping people out of foreclosure, out of starvation, and propped up morale. I think they could have been more successful had the Administration not shot itself in the foot with a perverse economic tightening in 1937. Recovery One of the best examples of a successful recovery program was the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). This program was proposed by Senator George Norris 5 during the Hoover Administration. Resurrected and expanded under Roosevelt, despite opposition from private utilities, The TVA constructed and maintained dams, provided hydroelectric power where there was no electricity before, and stimulated investment in the region. The TVA is one of the shining success stories of the New Deal. A less successful program was called the National Recovery Act (NRA). The NRA established a minimum wage, set working hours, and attempted to regulate prices. The act invested the President with vast authority to intervene in the market economy. One example was power to regulate aspects of interstate commerce, a power that the Constitution invests in Congress. The act was voluntary to business and riddled with bureaucracy. In May 1935 the US Supreme Court, in Schechter Poultry Corporation V. United States, unanimously ruled the NRA unconstitutional. In fact, 11 out of 16 of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Vera Wang Advertising Analysis Vera Wang is one of the most iconic designers in fashion today and this ad takes advantage of her recognition. This image, most likely from a fashion magazine, promotes Vera Wang s dress line. The advertisement uses three significant contrasts to draw the buyer in. First, the model in the actual dress line. Second, the flourishing background the models are put in. It makes you think about what the photographer was trying to portray. Lastly, the display case made the models are standing in and around. The modelin the front draws in the buyer, but the case is see through, allowing the viewer to see the model standing on the back side and part of the models arm to the left. The image suggests that someone who wears Vera Wang can have multiple styles and still feel good in whatever type of style that is. The greenery background gives the ad an interesting contrast. This is a nature setting, as implied by the grass and plants. Most of this background is not very visible, as the models take up most of the advertisement. The brightness of the plants suggest this photo was taken midday when the sun was at its peak. It was taken with a shallow depth of field, meaning the background is blurred and the main focus is on the objects in the front of the photo, The greenery is not very green, but fades into the background. There are no animals in the trees in the back, maybe suggesting this was taken in a place without a lot of wildlife, or the fact that there s no resources for these ... • 9. How Hadoop Is An Apache Open Source Software ( Java... Hadoop is an Apache open source software (java framework). It runs on cluster of commodity machines and provides both distributed storage and distributed processing of huge data sets. It is capable of processing data sizes ranging from Gigabytes to Petabytes. Architecture : Similar to master / slave architecture. The master is the Namenode and the Slaves are the data nodes. The Namenode maintains and manages blocks of datanodes. They are responsible for dealing with clients requests of data. Hadoop splits the files into one or more blocks and these blocks are stored on datanodes. Each datanode is replicated to provide fault tolerance characteristic of Hadoop. Default replicator factor is 3 which can be configured. Components: 1.Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS): It is designed to run on hardware which are less expensive and the data is stored in it distributed. It is highly fault tolerance and provides high throughput access to the applications that require big data. 2.Namenode: It manages the system namespace. It stores the metadata of data blocks. The metadata is stored in the form of namespace image and edit logs on a local machine. Following the rise of the Islamic State in 2014, acts of terror perpetrated by the would be caliphate have headlined global news cycles, rife with displays of atrocity and a deadly ambition to create a country ruled by extremist ideals. However, in the broader context of history, what will have the most significant effect on cultural memory is not the fact that these terrorists and ideologues attempted to form a state, but that it was one claimed to be inherently Islamic. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The media has played an unprecedented role in the phenomenon of the Islamic State, and will ensure its continuing relevance in cultural history. Constant images of executions, IS flags, and videos of soldiers patrolling captured cities are made inescapable by the prevalence of social media. This coverage ...has not caused the change in the nature of acts of terror over the past decades but it has made it easier for terrorist organizations to reach and instill fear in (most predominantly) the West (Galily et al. 1063). Recent evidence supports this, including a 2017 study that determined news reports on terrorism can cause a fear of terrorism in those watching that was previously absent. (Sikorski et al. 840). In addition, the fear caused by the inundation of media surrounding the Islamic State was magnified by often unpredictable lone wolf attacks on western cities. Usually, we all eat bread when it is stuffed with meat and cheese, but most can t resist the taste of certain breads without the added accompaniments. Sour Dough bread, being a popular favorite, is most commonly made by preparing your starter dough, feeding the starter dough, then finally kneading and baking the loaves. The first step is making the starter dough. Before starting, make sure you have a large, non metallic bowl for mixing. Making sure your bowls are non metallic ensures that the dough will not ruin. And that is not being exploited by capitalists (Nayyar 2006, 4). The process of globalization has changed the ways of human interaction and the flow of goods and services, people, information and ideas creating an interconnected single community that is continuously uniting many nations across borders. The emergence of easier accessibility to consumers needs has skyrocketed the production and consumption of goods and services. With a greater demand comes greater production and the twenty first century capitalist economies have changed patterns of free trade, rely on commodities and resources to be able to make profit and be integrated into the open market, benefitting from further economic growth. This change in trade patterns amongst different markets are based on product specialization and the division of labour to create employment opportunities, income and surplus benefits are extended to other parts of the globe. This also established a new idea of beauty that was achieved through harmony, symmetry and abiding by classical rules and styles. These rules helped some artists to create individuality and to experience greater artistic freedom. Brunelleschi s creation of new machinery was still impactful, but less so than the others. By the early 1850s, however, sectional conflict had arisen again uglier than ever, and most Missourians did not encourage the freeing of slaves. The Missouri Supreme Court ruled against Scott in 1852. He then took his case out of the state judicial system and into the federal judicial system by bringing it to the U.S. Circuit Court for the District of Missouri. At this point in the case, Scott s possession had been transferred to John Sanford which changed the case from Scott v. Emerson to Scot v. Sandford [different spelling due to a clerical error]. The Forward was written by none other than Christian Leader Desmond Tutu who opposed the apartheid in South Africa. Despite the cheery title this book was no easy read what so ever. The book covered topics cush as Worldwide Poverty, Environmental Degradation and Widespread Terrorism, just to name a few. The authors of this book had an interesting approach to laying these topics out, going in to great detail. Writing from a more realist approach the authors claimed not to be optimist, which was evident and at times they seemed slightly pessimistic. Throughout the book the authors made excellent use of many of our cultural problems pointing out their ideological roots. But before they did that they took to time to explain in great lengths what ideology really is and how it came about. It is more than just the dictionary definition: the body of doctrine, myth or beliefs that guide an individual, social movement, institution, class, or large group (Dictionary.com). • 29. Jealousy In Eli Bodeen s The Compound There are many actions the characters make in the book The Compound. For example, Eli tricked his brother, Eddy, into going with their grandma to go get Eddy s meds so Eli could get the first airplane ride. This action shows some competition and maybe a little jealousy. Some jealousy because Eddy always got to do things first and was popular. Eli wanted to be the head of the show this time. Because he did this, it caused Eddy and their grandma to be left out of the compound (Bodeen, 2008, p. 2). If Eli didn t act like this, the entire familywould be in the compound. There are many things that can be learned from this like, in life it is important to be nice to siblings because the next day they could be gone. The second action Eli made was ... But the kids were Eli s siblings. The yellow room is symbolic because it represents the experiments Rex created. The room locks in the supplements. It shows protectiveness and danger for the supplements. Another reason it is symbolic is it is where Eli saved the supplements and met them. On one hand it might have been a good choice, but now I think it was a horrible idea and they should treat Lucas, Cara, and, Quinn like part of the family. I think Rex and Clea made a bad decision. If Eli never walked in that room, Eli would never have seen them or been close to them. This decision in the world today wouldn t be noticed because many people become pregnant and send their children away. Many don t take care of their children or they abuse them. The riot was sparked by conflict between black freedmen and whites over the political control of the state of Louisiana. This resulted in a massive killing of blacks as whites had the overwhelming advantage in numbers and weapons. What s most interesting about this case is the mystery surrounding the accounts of deaths. No one can approximately confirm how many people were killed in this massacre. In a combat zone, this becomes even more important because lives and the success of the mission depend on it. This was not the case however, during a fight called Operation Anaconda. The purpose of this paper is to point out what went wrong with the lack of planning, coordination, rehearsal, and preparation between Air and ground communications, and how it proved to be critical during Operation Anaconda. The ending results were a delayed execution and several friendly casualties. Major Mark Davis conducted extensive interviews on this topic with air, ground, and special operations commanders, staff officers, and other forces that participated in Operation Anaconda. In his research, Davis found some major problems had occurred that caused a failure in coordination efforts. The first error Davis sighted was that the DOD failed to establish proper command structures and relationships needed for integration among the systems (MacPherson 2005, p. 350). This made it difficult for air and ground forces to communicate among each other when the battle was underway. Davis also sites that U.S. Central Command Chief Franks, made a costly decision to command the war from his office in Tampa, Florida. He was 7,000 miles and 10 time zones away from the battle front. Chief Franks believed that rather than move himself and his unit, would speed up the operating progress and not slow down the mission. Franks and his command relied on video phone conferences instead of personal communications, which led to limited communications. Another problem was that Franks gave lists of plans to be carried out rather than one battle plan. Also, because of the large numbers of independent units that participated, it was impossible for Franks to maintain communication presence and coordinate over this large command structure. This ultimately left decision making in the hands of CENTCOM staff ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One is of the desensitization of the troops during their hardship regarding the events of the Vietnam War, and the other is of the concept of truth. Truth may seem simple enough to explain, but is in fact endowed with many layers. The story is chalked full of contradictions, as well as lies, and embellishments, and yet O Brien claims that these are the truth. So in essence, this embellished half truth of a story is as true as the facts from a history book bringing us one step closer to the ultimate truth. The personal witnessing of events is a critical point of view in telling a true story. It may not be the entire truth, but it is the truth, as it seemed to the individual. The ideas get mixed up; you tend to miss a lot. And then afterward, when you go to tell about it, there is always that surreal feeling of what seemed to happen, which makes the story seem untrue. The visual disturbances and headaches indicate an increase growth, which causes pressure to the surrounding area. Plate Tectonics, And The World Plate Tectonics, And their relation to the world. ___ By Jillian Abreu There are many ways that earthquakes, plate boundaries, volcanoes, seafloor spreading, the Earth s core, convection currents, and subduction connect to each other, but the main way they are all connected is by plate tectonics. It all starts with plate tectonics. A theory by Alfred Wagner said that Pangaea, which is a land mass of all the continents combined, had been moved by continental drift to form the positions our continents are in now. This led to the theory of plate tectonics. This theory stated that pieces of the Earth s lithosphere are in slow, but constant motion, driven by convection currents in the mantle. A reason that backed up this theory was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The mantle is one of many layers of the Earth s core. As you can see from the picture on the left, the first layer is the Earth s crust, which compared to earth, is like a sheet of paper wrapped around a basket ball. The next layer is the lithosphere. This layer is broken into plates, better known as the tectonic plates mentioned earlier. The asthenosphere comes next, which is weak compared to the lithosphere. Since the layer is hotter, the layer is more soft. As we get closer to the center, we look at the mantle. The mantle is made of thick, solid rock. The next layer is the outer core. This core contains of liquid magma with much iron and nickel. Lastly, there is the inner core. This layer is so hot that the heat melts metal ores into liquid magma. In this mantle, there are convection currents. Heat from the core causes convection currents to slowly move the Earth s crust around. All over the crust s surface, crust is destroyed, and reformed. All plate boundaries movements are moved by convection currents in the mantle. At the boundaries between plates, magma is able to force its way to the surface and escape as lava. There are three different types of plate boundaries known as convergent, divergent, and transform. Convergent Divergent Transform As you can see, with convergent plate boundaries, they ... During this era, women had to prove their quality of music was extraordinary. Women were expected to raise a family, not compose music. It was certainly not common at the time to see a woman being a musician. Society was trying to tell her that she was not important enough to go through with her passion. Clara got well known musicians to take her seriously and persuaded them that women could be gifted in music. Clara fought through many assumptions of her and rose to the top. After she became known for being an appreciable pianist, society and male musicians during the period started to see her as an equal. Clara was in a musical society that was entirely conquered by men, getting their praise was a very great point in her life. In 178 countries, paid leave for a new mother is guaranteed. Nearly 120 provide paid maternity leave for at least 12 weeks. And, the United States is the only high income country in the world that does not offer a guaranteed paid leave program for fathers or mothers. The egocentric self takes on the idea that each individual, as an aware and distinct person, is responsible for their actions. As such, the individual possesses intrinsic qualities such as generosity, integrity, or beauty. However, for the sociocentric self, no individual possesses the intrinsic qualities; generosity, integrity, or beauty can only apply to social situations (i.e. rather than the man is generous, for the egocentric self, the sociocentric self would see he gives money to his friends ). Provide one reason why anthropologists prefer to use the ethnographic method. To avoid bias that can emerge from an armchair approach, anthropologists can conduct their own research through the ethnographic method and collect vital information through surveys and questionnaires themselves in the ethnographic method. Participant observation allows for in depth immersion in the lives of the particular group to understand the meanings these people ascribe to their existence, allowing the anthropologist to see others from their point of view. Identify and briefly explain two challenges in doing fieldwork. Fieldwork requires funding and permission; anthropologists require sponsorship from the government or other external benefactors. The application process to receive funding from the government is also highly competitive, meaning that anthropologists ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. Prenatal Testing Persuasive Speech A mother is in the hospital and she has just given birth to a handsome baby boy. However, she did not know that her little boy would be born with Tay Sachs disease. Tay Sachs is an inherited disease that destroys neurons in the brain and spinal cord. As the mother s child gets older, he will suffer from the loss of his ability to use his motor skills. Eventually, he will lose his hearing and vision, and could possible obtain seizures; he will probably not live past early childhood. But what if this tragedy could be stopped? What if there were a solution to all of this suffering? There is a solution, and the solution is called prenatal testing. Prenatal testing is a test that can be done on the unborn child to detect things such as birth defects... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first way that prenatal testing can be done is through something called a prenatal diagnostic test. In general, it is the diagnostic procedures, such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, that people think of when they hear the term prenatal testing, (Press 1). Amniocentesis is when doctors take a sample of the fluid that surrounds the baby in the uterus to determine certain genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities. Chorionic villus sampling is when doctors take cells from projections on the placenta to also discover any genetic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities. These processes are considered invasive because they are putting objects that could potentially hurt the baby into the protective area surrounding the baby. These ways of prenatal testing come with a very negative feeling because they could possibly injure the baby, and the word invasive is attached to a very negative connotation. However, these options can find more abnormalities and diseases than non invasive prenatal testing. NIPT accurately diagnoses Down s syndrome, Edward s syndrome, Patau syndrome, Turner s syndrome, and numerical chromosome aberration and cannot detect other chromosomal anomalies, (Ryu Kim 1). Even though this is true, NIPT is still a very beneficial option to the mother and unborn child. NIPT usually uses a DNA sample to determine chromosomal abnormalities that could lead to things such as Down s syndrome. The procedure is done by the doctors taking a sample of the mother s blood to determine what types of diseases and disabilities the baby will have. Many people like this type of prenatal testing because it is not detrimental to the baby, or mother s health. Studies investigating the acceptability of NIPT suggest that pregnant women find it preferable because the standard screening is associated with more uncertain results and ... • 52. The Depression Of Manic Depression For my research paper, I decided to look into Manic Depression. I have chosen to write about this topic because I have been personally dealing with this disorder since about eight years old. Manic Depression is usually referred to as Bipolar Disorder, but when I tell someone that I am Bipolar, they just think that it means I get angry easily. People seem to take me more seriously when I refer to it as Manic Depression. I used to have to take a wide variety of medications and go to counseling when I was younger because I was having struggles with suicidal urges. Recently it has gotten significantly worse since the death of my father due to a stroke in 2012. This is a very serious topic for me because it has made and will continue to make my life more difficult than it needs to be. Manic Depression first started to get looked into in Greece during the 1st century by Aretaeus of Cappadocia. The research he did was not acknowledged for many centuries after. The terms manic and depressive come from the ancient Greek terms mania and melancholia. The ancient Greeks and Romans learned that lithium could be used to treat the manically depressed people by bathing with lithium salt. In this era, it was very common for the deeply religious dogma of the time to execute people that suffered from bipolar disorder or any other mental disorders. During the 17th century, a book named The Anatomy of Melancholy was written by Robert Burton. The book covered different forms of treatment for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Who s For The Game By Jesse Pope Essay Patriotism has been defined as the cultural attraction and devotion to ones homeland. Eager young men lined the streets, waiting for their turn to show their devotion to their country, by signing up for World War 1. As the war progressed, views on Patriotism changed. Different views on patriotism were expressed throughout the war using poetry and media. There was a trending pattern of soldiers who were eager to sign up, egged on by the guilt tripping propaganda spoon fed to them by government controlled media. The war trudged on and soldiers faced the true struggles of war. Realisation hit them, and they started to question whether the lives of their friends and themselves may not be worth defending their country. The popular view of war at the time is reflected in Jesse Pope s poem Who s for the Game? The strong patriotic views favoured during World War 1 are portrayed in this poem. Jesse Pope was an admired propagandist. She wrote dynamic poems and stories to entrap people into the belief that signing up for the Great War was an honour, and a manly thing to do. In her well received poem Who s for the Game? she uses rhetorical questions to make men question why... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 54. The Problem Of A Free Lunch There s no such thing as a free lunch a very common saying in Economics because it emphasizes that every decision requires a trade off, and although one person may be getting a deal there is always another side to the story. John Komlos, a well respected Economist, felt economics students left their introductory classes under the impression that in the real world, perfect competition and efficiency are very common in the market, with few market failures, and government intervention in the economy is generally bad and leads to losses (2). In theory and for in class examples this view of the economy is very straight forward and makes teaching easier. However, in the real world; there is another side of the story. Free markets do have downsides and need some government regulationalongside being guided by morals. Americans pride themselves extensively on being free and letting the people choose how to live, but should everything in our country be left up to the public? The free market has the potential to be an efficient and positive system for all those involved. Theoretically, consumers make themselves heard through their purchasing power, this creates competition and ensures companies supply only quality products for fair prices (1). Unfortunately, creating competition also has a Darwin effect on the producers(1). Suddenly, rivalries are formed and making the highest profits becomes the sole purpose of the company.
