Decision Tree Analysis On Decision Trees
Decision Tree Analysis
A decision tree is a widespread technique of designing and envisaging predictive
patterns and systems. It is a tree structured design of a set of aspects to test in
direction to expect the output. Decision trees are effective and accepted implements
for prediction and classification. The value of decision trees is because of the reality
that, in compare to neural networks, it signifies rules. Rules can quickly be
articulated so that individuals can comprehend them or even directly use up in a
database retrieve language as structured query language (SQL) so that keep
information falling into a certain sort may be accessed. Decision tree technique is
mostly used for data classification, and it differed into 2 phases; the tree pruning and
the tree structure. The training data to create a test function, conferring to various
classification centered on decision tree classification process in contrast with
another, it is a faster, more straightforward and easy to comprehend classification
systems, simply transformed into database uncertainties benefits, and particularly in
problem matters of high dimension can be incredibly decent classification
outcomes. The decision tree is a classification paradigm, applied to remaining data.
If we apply it to special data, for which the class is unidentified, we also get a
prognostication of the class. The hypothesis is that the special data originates from
the analogous dissemination as the data we get through to create

How Did Orville Start To Fly Again
On December 17th, the brothers were ready to fly their plane again. At 10:00 a.m.
the brothers put up a signal for the men in the lifesaving station to get ready for
them to fly again. When we got up a wind of between 20 and 25 miles was blowing
from the north. We got the machine out early and put up the signal for the men at the
station (McCullough, 85). It was now Orville s turn to try to fly their airplane. The
first flight lasted about twelve seconds and went a total of one hundred twenty feet.
The plane ended in a downward dart, ending the flight. The impact cracked one of the
skids and set the stopwatch on the flight recording instrument back to zero. Wilbur in
excitement of the moment forgot to stop the stopwatch in his hand,
The Legacy Of The Lincoln Electric Company Essay
The Lincoln Electric Company is the largest manufacturer of welding equipment
in the world. John C. Lincoln founded the company in 1895 and incorporated it in
1906 where he moved it from his one room, fourth floor factory to a new three
story building he erected in East Cleveland. (Sharplin, 1989, A Historical Sketch
pp. 1.). In 1907 John s younger brother joined the company and in 1914 became the
general manager and vice president. It is here where the company began to define
its culture with James instituting an employee elected advisory board who would be
tasked with keeping James apprised on the operation of the company. This
committee was also to be the voice of the employees to the executive team, a practice
that is still performed today with twice monthly meetings. The incentive programs set
forth in these early years have laid the groundwork for sustaining high production
levels while engaging employees in the feeling of pride and ownership of their and
the company s success. Many of the original incentive programs have changed little
over the years and they continue to influence Lincoln Electrictoday.
The incentive management plan within Lincoln Electric began its journey in 1914
with the formation of the advisory board. The first change made reduced the
weekly working hours from 55 to 50. One year later, they gave every employee a
fully paid life insurance policy, welding school in 1917 and a bonus plan in 1918. Of
these three the bonus plan was,

William Wallace
William Wallace had responsibility for his country when he led wars in Scotland.
William Wallace was born in the month of August 23, 1270 near Paisley, Renfrew.
His father was named Sir Malcolm Wallace. Sir Malcolm Wallace was a landowner
in Renfrew. William Wallacegrew up with his best friend named Robert de Bruce.
After growing up together time passed and William Wallace best friend Robert de
Bruce became a king.
William Wallace and thirty other friends burned a city named Lanmark and killed
their English sheriff. When Wallace fought against the Stirling Castle they won and
as a trophy Mr. Wallace kept the skin of a soldier. Wallace organized a local army
and attacked the English strongholds. Before William Wallace started to fight for his
country he had sworn an allegiance to King Edward. Three months later after Wallace
returned to Scotland, Edward revisited to England at the same time. Seven months
later after William Wallace returned to Scotland once more King Edward attacked
Scotland again.
March 1298, July third Edward invaded Scotland. On September 11, 1297 an English
army confronted Wallace and his men at the Farth River near Stirling. Wallace forces
were outnumbered but the English had to cross a narrow bridge. Even though the

was born November 21, 1898, Lessines, Belgium to a wealthy family. He had three
younger brothers, his father was in the manufacturing business, and his mother was
thought to be a milliner before getting married. A man paintingin a crematory and his
mother s suicide in 1912 influenced Magritte s progress as an artist. Magritte painted
to find comfort from his mother s death. In 1916, he left home and studied art at the
AcadГ©mie des Beaux Arts in Brussels for the next two years. Although he was not
interested in his classes, he became friends with Victor Servranckx, who taught
Magritte the three styles: Futurism, Cubism, and Purism. Then, in 1921, he joined the
Essay on Offshore Drilling
Offshore Drilling
What is it?
Drilling for oil in the ocean is one of the greatest technological breakthroughs in
recent decades, and many new techniques have been developed to profit from the
abundance of oil underneath the ocean floor. While drilling for oil has been around
for hundreds of years in one form or the another, the effective extraction of petroleum
from beneath the sea floor did not surface until the last forty years. The search for oil
often turns out to be unproductive, but this practice is vital for the economic future of
many nations.
In order for any drilling to take place, an offshore drilling rig must first be installed.
These offshore platforms can be situated in water up to a several hundred meters in
depth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These production platforms come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and types, which are
dependent on the dimensions of the field, the depth of the water and how far the oil
and/or gas field is from shore.
The platforms are generally made of steel and fixed to the seabed with steel posts.
These platforms harbor all of the processing equipment for the well and can house a
maximum of 80 workers. In addition, platforms have concrete structures large enough
to store oil, with gravity keeping them situated on the seabed
Explanation of Drilling
Drilling begins once the drill bit is lowered to the ocean floor. This first step is
referred to as spudding.
There are two types of drill bits: (1) a roller cone or rock bit which usually has
three cones armed with steel or tungsten carbide teeth or buttons; or (2) a diamond
bit, imbedded with small industrial diamonds. The drill bit is attached to drill pipe
and rotated by a turntable on the platform floor. As the hole deepens, extra lengths of
drill pipe are attached. (Offshore Drilling)
The diameter of the drill bit varies from a diameter of 36 inches, which is used
when the hole in the ocean floor is first started, to a diameter of 8.5 inches. The
total length of a drill pipe is 30 feet. The time it takes for the drill to reach the oil and
gas trap could be weeks.
In order to move the drill cuttings

Discuss the Influence of Press and Media in Shaping the...
Discuss the influence of press and media in shaping the public s fear about crime.
Use examples from recent press and media coverage of crime to illustrate your
answer.
An area that has caused much debate in criminology is the significance of the media
and the effect is has on fear of crime.
Fear of crime is very difficult to measure as there are different types of fear and
also different levels of fear but it is believed that the press and media can influence
an individual to think that they are more likely to become a victim of crime.
In today s society with the development of technology and the fact that information
is so readily available, more people are now aware of the amount of crime that occurs.
The question is, are we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is believed that women and elderly people are the most fearful of crime. Women
could spend more time in the home if they don t work and if they look after young
children and elderly people are more likely to spend time inside due to lack of
mobility. It is interesting that they have the most fear as statistically they are the
least likely to be a victim of crime and actually young males are the most likely to
be victims especially of violent crime. Well known research into this is the
cultivation analysis of Gerbner et al., which is presented in Hales Criminology , in the
eighth chapter that deals with understanding the connections between crime and the
media. Gerbner, over several decades, carried out survey questionnaires and content
analysis to find out the influence of violence of prime time US television
programmes. Gerbner deemed those who watched more than 4 hours of TV a day
to be heavy television viewers and found that they had a higher fear of crime as
television portrays the world as scary .
There is also a difference between the way stories are reported in newspapers. A
tabloid will generally have an over representation of violent crime if compared to
broadsheet papers. In 2003, broadsheet newspaper, The Guardian, published a story
titled, Tabloids stoke fear of crime . In this article official Home Office statistics were
quoted and 16% of those who read tabloid papers were very worried about being the
victim of a mugging compared to

The defeat of the Spanish Armada is one of the most famous events in English
history. It was arguably Queen Elizabeth s finest hour. For years she had been
hailed as the English Deborah, the saviour of the English people, and now it seemed
that this is what she had really become. She was now Bellona, the goddess of war,
and in triumph she had led her people to glory, defeating the greatest power in the
16th century world.
Spain was the most powerful country in the world. Philip II ruled vast territories of

This had angered Philip immensely, especially as the stolen treasure was used to help
fund those people rebelling against his rule in the Netherlands.
As early as 1585, Philip had begun to prepare a great fleet that, under the Spanish
commander Santa Cruz, would invade England. At first the aim of the Armada was
to liberate the captive Queen of Scots, but when Mary was executed for conspiring
Elizabeth s death in 1587, Philip planned to invade England in the name of his
daughter, the Infanta Isabella. Philip believed he had a genuine claim to the English
throne, both by descent from John of Gaunt, and as Queen Mary I s husband. The
purpose of the mission was to depose Elizabeth, put Mary/Isabella on the throne, and
make England Roman Catholic once again.
It was perhaps an omen, however, that from the start, the Spanish faced problems.
Santa Cruz died, and his successor, the Duke of Medina Sedonia, was not at all
suited to the post. He had little faith in the enterprise and little experience. He
begged Philip to release him from the charge, but the King was adamant. The
enterprise had received another set back when Francis Drake and his men had sailed
to the coast of Spain and destroyed many of the Spanish ships at Cadiz.
Queen Elizabeth had heard mutterings of the intended invasion of England by

Lord Of The Flies Civilization Analysis
Within any civilization, there are multiple key components required in order to
create a functioning society. As explained through Lord of the Flies by William
Golding, these pivotal building blocks of a civilization can play a great part into
bringing a group of people to society, or drag them all down into savagery. The
conch shell is an excellent example of political legitimacyand democratic power.
Although, while this device can be used for good; providing others with order and
sanity, it can also be used for the utter destruction of a civilization. The conch shell in
Lord of the Flies by William Goldingbegins as civilization and order, becomes the
fragility of power and influence, and concludes with the collapse of any civilized
thoughts. Civilization and order can be found within every society, and this is no
exception within the group of boys in the beginning of the novel. Throughout the
exposition of the story, governance over the group of boys was unknown. No order
was established to influence the boys to cooperate and fulfill the needed tasks to get
off the island. Although, there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him
out: there was his size, and attractive appearance...yet most powerfully, there was the
conch. The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with
the delicate thing balanced on his knees, was set apart (Golding 22). The conch shell
was able to control and demand a large audience. It provided Ralph with a
Essay about Rational Choice Theory in Political Science
Rational Choice Theory in Political Science
According to one of rational choice theory s prominent and more thoughtful
contemporary exponents, Peter C. Ordeshook, four books mark the beginning of
modern political theory: Anthony Downs s An Economic Theory of Democracy
(1957), Duncan Black s Theory of Committees and Elections (1958), William H.
Riker s A Theory of Political Coalitions (1962), and James Buchanan and Gordon
Tullock s The Calculus of Consent (1962). These volumes, along with Kenneth
Arrow s Social Choice and Individual Values (1951), began such a wealth of research
that political scientists today have difficulty digesting and synthesizing all but small
parts of it. Consequently, the full value of this research often goes ... Show more

First I will provide an overview of what rational choice theory is and why it has
staked such a prominent position in the discipline of political science. In this
section I conclude that rational choice theory has indeed developed advanced
methodologies at telling us how rational agents should behave. Then in my second
section I will show, using the empirical case of the free rider problem and collective
action, as well as the case of suicide terrorism, that rational choice theory cannot
adequately account for actual political phenomena. In my third section I will provide
some reasons for why this is the case. Finally, in my concluding section I will posit a
theoretical framework incorporating some refinements to the assumptions behind
rational choice theory that would better aid a predictive (but not universalist) political
science.
What is Rational Choice Theory?
Rational choice theory is actually more than one theory per se, but the basic
similarities among its variants mean that they can be intelligibly amalgamated for the
purposes of critiquing its implementation in political science. Therefore public
choice theory, positive political science, rational actor models, and the economic
approach to politics, among others, refer to what we may call rational choice theory
for the purposes of this essay. (See Green and Shapiro 1994, xi.
Growing Up in Dysfunctional Families Essay
People who come from dysfunctional families are not destined for a dysfunctional
life, (Bo Bennett). In today s society dysfunctional homes have been a major issue in
the United States. Many people hope that once they leave home, they will leave their
family and their childhood problems behind. However, many people find that they
experience similar problems, as well as similar feelings and relationship patterns,
long after they have left the familyenvironment. In the eyes of Americans today,
children grow up in family environments which help them feel worthwhile, valuable,
and appreciated by their family. According to experts at University of Illinois, Ideally,

While many people believe that most families in America are well functioning
families, the novel Montana 1948 shows a good portrayal of a dysfunctional family
because they did not have hope for the future and without hope dysfunction will
spread through generations of families like a disease, destroying many lives along the
way.
Some children in today s society aren t all taught the do s and don ts of what is
publicly accepted. From different environments children are raised in, they think that
whatever they are taught is the right thing. They have no prior knowledge of what is
normal. As Marie Hartwell Walker states in Why Dysfunctional Families Stay That
Way she shares that,
Because they don t know what normal is, a dysfunctional family is participating in
the pretense that they are a normal family bringing up children within the range of
what is normal. Because we live in a culture that respects family privacy, someone
usually has to get badly hurt before the illusion is questioned by anyone outside its
ranks, (Hartwell Walker).
The main reason of why children have a hard time blending into society is because
they are unwilling to change their ideas and values for the fact that they were taught
differently. And for the fact that they were taught a different way they get offended
when someone tries to change them or criticize them on their upbringing and
lifestyle. These people try to teach them these things because they weren t
Benefits And Benefits Of Employee Benefits Essay
Employee benefits are all forms of consideration given by an enterprise in place of
service rendered by employees. Post employment benefits are employee benefits
which are payable after the employment period is completed. Profit sharing bonus
payment: an organisation should observe the future cost of profit sharing and bonus
payments only if the organisation has a present obligation to make these payments
based on the result of past events. A trustworthy assessment of the obligation can be

of the profit only if they continue with the organisation for a specified period. There
are numerous natural advantages to furnishing your workers with an exhaustive

exceptionally qualified staff that is the key driver. With the segment being

may think that its more hard to discover and keep diverse sorts of employee. Here

Jealousy is the theme of uBuhlaluse beNkosi. In this story Buhlaluse is the victim of

of not being liked by her companions. All because her they are envious of her beauty

Language usage: Folktales were specifially created for teaching, they display the do

well as well chosen words that make the story come alive and linger in the mind of
listeners. Unfortunately some of those words are lost when translating the story from
Zulu to English, for example when the woodcutter first hears Buhlaluse singing, he

Grey s Anatomy is a popular drama doctor show to this day. They had a music event
episode where everyone sang and they had two songs that display the symbolic

of the setting and how the music itself develops throughout each song. These songs
were chosen to be in Grey s Anatomybecause they illustrate real life of losing

The reason Torres is performing this song is because she is in a coma and
essentially her spirit is singing to herself to make own self wake up from her
coma. In the beginning since she is in a coma, it represents death as she is at the
end of the symbolic cycle, death. She starts by saying So many stories of where I
ve been which shows she has experience of life and she is at the west side where
she is an adult knowing everything. As Torres is singing, she is walking through the
hospital as she gets closer to willing herself to wake up. One of the reasons was her
girlfriend, Arizona Robbins, who loves her and she has her child Sofia to fight for.
Her child, Sofia, represents life and birth as she beings her symbolic cycle. Most
of this song is about being experienced as Torres says she has climbed mountain
tops and swam all across the ocean blue and by her saying this, she is motivating

Political Campaign Contributions Is Not A New Practice
Bribing government officials running for office by way of political campaign
contributions is not a new practice. A business donates a significant amount of
money to a politician who then gives them a government contract they want in
return whether it be monetary gain by way of the taxpayer or allowing them to
break laws for the sake of their business. These practices come out of the pockets of
taxpayers and many politicians serve jail time for them. There are several regulations
put in place by the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Boardand by individual states.
Recent studies in the past year, one done by Harvard University, have both suggested
and concluded that the United States of America is no longer a democracy, but an
oligarchy. An oligarchy is a form of government in which the richest people have
the most power. It dates back to the time of the first colonies. Part of the United
States being reclassified as an oligarchy may be due to the amount of government
bribes the nation has going on at the present time. In the last presidential election in
2012, there was talk about large corporations giving the political candidates
campaign contributions in order to buy them and it is a commonly discussed topic
as of this day. Bribes given to the government are common in underdeveloped
countries where the government is corrupt as this is an example of a corrupt
practice. All levels of government from federal down to local have been caught in
some sort of
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen
Covey
Stephen Covey was an American businessman, author, educator, and keynote
speaker. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is known as being his most
popular work and he has since written several other books, some of which have
expanded on the seven habits. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People does
not only entertain the idea of becoming an entrepreneur and making money, but it
is also a guide that can be used to find means of living a meaningful and fulfilled
life. With that being said, if used correctly, the concepts that are addressed in this
book can provide one with an enlightened outlook on the way that they conduct
business and their personal lives in an effective manner. Among other things, the
book explores the paradox of being a successful businessperson and being a good
person. The first habit is simply, to be proactive. With that being said, Covey goes
into great detail concerning what being proactive really means. Being proactive
means taking responsibility for your own life and being in charge of the way that it
turns out. There is a countless amount of things that people can blame for their
misfortunes, but the proactive person will choose to focus on only the things that
they can control. It is easy to let exterior forces get in the way of how you live your
life, but you must not let these obstacles stand in your way. You must take
responsibility for how you respond to them. The second habit is begin with the end in
mind. This habit is
Republican Wisconsin Senator, Joseph R. Mccarthy Essay
Republican Wisconsin senator, Joseph R. McCarthy, was originally a quiet senator
who was fairly unknown and had done nothing extraordinary previous to 1950. The
senator changed all that when he delivered a speech in February 1950, in which he
leveled allegations that the State Department employed numerous Communists. He
claimed to possess a list of these Communist employees, although that list was
never produced (Tindall, George Brown, and David Emory Shi). Senator
McCarthy s attempt to gain publicity with his outlandish accusations worked. Since
the first Red Scare years before the fifties, many Americans continued to be
terrified of Communists and their potential ability to corrupt and overrun America.
Senator McCarthy played on these fears, and he continued to claim communism
had infiltrated every aspect of America; politics, culture and all of American
society. Because of the similarity of events from the first Red Scare, this time
period of the early fifties in America is often called the second Red Scare. The
second Red Scare in America s history actually began in the late forties, previous to
McCarthy s emergence in 1950, and it continued on throughout the fifties lasting at
least a dozen years (Storrs, Landon R. Y.) McCarthy s short era during the second
Red Scare actually lasted only four years, but because of his outspoken and arrogant
persona, as well as his ability to inflict fear and persecution on innocent people, this
entire span of time went down in the
The Common Rule and Human Research Essay
Human research done in the United States nowadays is regulated by the Common
Rule. The Common Rule is a policy on the topic of Human Subject Protection created
by a number of agencies specifically the National Commission for the Protection of
Human Subjects for Biomedical and Behavioral Research developed in 1974 to
address detection of serious maltreatment of human subjects from the Syphilis Study
at Tuskegee (Iltis, 2011). Some key requirements of the Common Rule are: assuring
compliance by research institutions, obtaining and documenting informed consent,
Institutional Review Board(IRB) membership, function, operations, review or
research, and record keeping. It included additional safeguards for vulnerable subjects
such as pregnant... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One should also recognize the possibility of other potential reviewing entities. St.
Francis must approve all proposals without any exceptions if human subject or
animals are involved. All students must have a faculty member sponsoring the
research in order to supervise the student s proposal. If the research proposal has
been reviewed by any other entity a copy needs to be with the proposal to St.
Francis University s IRB. Although the IRB reviews all research involving humans
there are review categories that research may be eligible for if the Principal
Investigator ( PI ) requests. This decision is determined by the IRB not the PI the
request must be submitted requesting exemption status if one of the following are
present:
1.Research conducted in established or commonly accepted education environment
that does research one a regular basis.
2.Research using tests, surveys, interviews, observation of public behavior without
any identification of the participants.
3.Research utilizing existing data if without any identifiers
4.Research that is conducted by the approval of federal or state agency heads to
evaluate public benefit.
5.Food quality and evaluation only with the using or without food ingredients at or
below the level found to be safe.
Research that is classified exempt is not subjected to the continued review but it is
important to be aware that Exempt does not mean no review.

Claudia Rankine Analysis
This past Friday, I attended Claudia Rankine s reading at Fordham University
Lincoln Center. Going into the reading I had no real idea of what was going to be
discussed nor the true significance of her work, all I knew is that she is an
important and worldly renowned poet. In the reading, she read excerpts from her
book named Citizen An American Lyric. Which focuses on micro aggressions
towards people of color. These events are examples of everyday racismthat can be
experienced by people of color in the US. Though I have read some of her work in
the past, attending this reading and actually hearing the author express her work
through her own emotions really took things to another level. It showed me a whole

Comparsion Of The Differences Between The 1950 s And
Today
There are many differences between today s entertainment and the past. From when
the first mechanical television(TV) sets were sold to the public to today there have
been many changes and advances. The differences between the decades entertainment
include the amount of educational and informative programming, the amount of
obscenity and violence, and the graphics.
The most noticeable difference between the early television and today is the graphics.
When the first television came out for public consumption all programming was
broadcasted in black and white. On January 12th, 1950, the general public was
introduced to color television for the very first time... (tv obscurities) After that color
television took off with the production and consumption of colored television sets.
There was not much of a variety in colored programming until the start of the 1965
1966 season when NBC broadcasted the vast majority of its primetime programming
in color. (tv obscurities) After color television came Digital Television(DTV), which

John Keats s Poem Analysis
Underlying Methods of Communication in Keats To Autumn In To Autumn, a
poem by John Keats, we see a multi leveled examination of mortality concealed
within a seemingly simple ode to the fall season. The poem opens with an
overwhelming appeal to the senses. Anyone familiar with the common motifs of
Autumn will identify heavily with the first stanza, for Autumn is a time of
ripening pumpkins and relaxed musings. The second stanza has a tone reminiscent
of the feeling that accompanies the end of a hard day s work. However, as the
second part of this poem ends, the reader feels a dull pang of some unidentified
negative emotion. This emotion is similar to the guilt of relaxed, yet hardworking
men who are too proud to be lazy, even for a moment. The ending stanza of the
poem arrives and passes like the end of Autumn, swiftly (Keats 763 764). The
speaker in the poem seems to be scrambling to appreciate the wonders of Autumn
before the swift, bitter end. The progression of ideas, imagery, and tone are highly
reminiscent to the thoughts of a man who, at the end of his life, is trying to find
meaning and beauty in his life as he approaches his swift, bitter end. The poignancy
of this poem is found in the distinct levels by which Keats communicates emotions. In
the progression of Keats To Autumn, there are three basic levels of understanding: the
outright evolution of ideas seen in the initial reading, the contradictory tone changes,
and the subtle paradoxes found
Psychological Components Of Distribution Is Knowledge
And...
Psychological components A psychological component of distribution is knowledge
and education. The distribution sets the tone for auctions, trading, and banking that
take place, hence the need for knowing why some companies get their allowances
free and others need to buy them. The industries need to be educated on how
distributions works, so that they are able to know how much allowance they are
getting and if they need more they can know how to get it. The distribution element
is effective this element uses community based social marketing as it recognizes the
barriers in this case time to make changes to reduce their emission, those giving
plenty of free permits (Koger Winter, 2010, p. 145). Furthermore, it selects a

Another psychological element is found in the regulations of the system. Foremost,
contingency occurs in the regulations. Here knowledge allows industries to know
how penalties work in a way that makes sense to them (money). For instance,
companies need to be given numbers or percentages of the importance to complying
with the allowances they are given, so that they violations do not occur. Furthermore,
giving companies the estimated reduction in cost that they will experience by
complying will allowed the companies to want to keep their emissions by
implementing new plans that will help achieve this, thus the incentives provide
positive reinforcement. On the other side of the spectrum, if violations occur
companies have to deal with penalties, which may be monetary (negative
punishment). To prevent the leakage element from occurring, there is a need to
promote social status for the companies that comply with the program. Promoting
social status is a form of consequence strategy, since it promotes the continual
environmental behavior (e.g. reducing emissions). The government can utilize
feedback by letting the companies know how their change in behavior helps climate
change and providing information on how to change their behaviors to reduce
emissions. What s more, the companies can gain feed back from the public,

Mother Tongue by Amy Tan Essay
Identity and Culture
Amy Tan s , Mother Tongue and Maxine Kingston s essay, No Name Woman
represent a balance in cultures when obtaining an identity in American culture. As
first generation Chinese Americans both Tan and Kingston faced many obstacles.
Obstacles in language and appearance while balancing two cultures. Overcoming
these obstacles that were faced and preserving heritage both women gained an
identity as a successful American.
In the work of Amy Tan s Mother s Tongue she provides a look into how she adapted
her language to assimilate into American culture. She made changes to her language
because her mother heavily relied on her for translation. She was the voice of her

My mother was in the room. And it was perhaps the first time she had heard me
give a lengthy speech using the kind of English I have never used with her. (417)
Overcoming the barrier between languages she spoke aided Tan in building a bridge
between cultures. She changed her language to assimilate into American culture
while also keeping familial culture. A piece of heritage that uses a language of
intimacy, a different sort of English that relates to familytalk. Tan grew up with this
language and she still uses it with her mother, husband and in her books. (418)
Another method to find identity in a new host society is through appearance. In the
essay, No Name Woman by Maxine Kingston ideals in appearance were passed from
generation to generation. Altering ideals when creating identity is noticed in
Kingston s essay. A long held tradition in many Chinese families is that many
generations live under the same roof and this can cause a conflict in ideals.
Conflicting ideals between generations is shown as Tan tells how the younger
generation hid the identities of their sexual color and their character. Hiding these
new identities they hoped to avoid potential conflict with generational ideals.
Kingston did not hide her identity, she found herself walking erect (knees straight,
toes pointed forward, not pigeon toed, which is Chinese feminine) and speaking in an

Russolo Research Paper
Music has been around for a long time, and no one is really sure when it was
invented; music has always seemed to just be. But, since music has been given rules
and explored as an art form, it has been innovated and changed in ways that changed
it forever. The invention and of electricity and machines changed the way that music
was approached, as much as exploring what a chord is. Electricity also brought about
a new, interesting genre of music; electronic music, which is any type of music that is
produced by a machine. By this definition, any soundthat is run through a computer

medium. The development of this art form was interesting, as there were many...

divisible into six timbral types: booms, whistles, whispers, screams, percussive
sounds and vocal sounds (human and animal) (Morgan 116). The intonarumori made
sound by vibrating a stretched diaphragm, and the variation of that speed was what
made the tone and pitch of the sound change. Russolo created several compositions
for his instruments, which were received critically by the public. Although the ideals
of Russolo were very influential, neither his musical scores nor his intonarumori
survived, which means the assumption can be made that neither were of great interest
to the musical world (Morgan 116 117). Although Futurism did have a lasting impact

Futurism stands in the history of twentieth century music as the first clear
manifestation of a major and enduring concern: the relationship between new music

subsequent compositional developments, their wish to conquer the infinite variety of
noise sound has remained a reoccurring interest throughout the century (Morgan 117).
Russolo s idea of combining noise into music was absolutely pivotal to the

This increase in revenue is due to the success of a specific team, marketing, and
salary cap. More successful teams earn more revenue. For example, the Golden
State Warriors received nearly double of that of the Orlando Magic because of
their success. Studies have indicated that winning percentage and the success of
your team have a strong positive correlation with attendance. More attendance
means more revenue for the program because more tickets are being sold. Another
way revenue is gained is having a star player or players. The Cleveland Cavaliers
have the biggest impact of revenue by a star player with Lebron James. With
James back on the team, the Cavaliers saw their revenue jump 45% this season.
With expanding viewership, revenue in the NBA has significantly grown. With

The Effects Of Bullying On Academic Achievement
Main findings
Before stating the mains findings of the study it is important to mention that the
researchers hypotheses were, that the victims of bullying in 10th grade will have
lower achievement in 12th grade regardless of their race/ethnic background and that
high achieving black and Latino students, as indicated by 9th grade GPA, will be
more vulnerable to bullying. In contrast they expect that low achieving Asian
students, as indicated by 9th grade GPA, will be especially susceptible to bullying.
Their main focus was to examine how bullying affects academic achievement. After
conducting their research, the researchers came to the conclusion that although
family background and school characteristics notably affects students performance,
bullying also have significant influence in students educational achievement. As
stated in the research article their studying found that bullying decreases 12th grade
GPA after considering key student and school characteristics associate with
achievement. Moreover, they concluded that the impact of bullying has an abiding
effect on students academic achievement even after the bullying incident. The second
finding of the study gave partial support for their second hypothesis which suggested
that Asian, Black, and Latinos students were going to be more likely to experience
bullying when they did not meet their stereotype. According to research Asian
students are perceived to be high achievers, thus the researchers theory suggested
Beetle Case Study
The New Beetle Question 1: Why was the current advertising campaign a success?
In 1993 Volkswagen had record low sales but by the end of 1997 the VW brand
had sold 137,885 cars. That was an increase of 178% from it s 1993 slump. It is
safe to say that the the 94 relaunch of VW on the American Market was a success.
The Drivers Wanted campaign, developed by Arnold Communications, I believe was
successful as a result of excellent market research and positioning. Arnold
Communications undertook extensive market research in order to understand the
modern VW buyer and their position in the industry. They set about collecting
primary data through extensive interviews, visiting 95 of the top VW dealers and

phenomenon in the 60 s was seen as countercultural and that small is beautiful. These
values could still be leveraged in modern American society where there is a move to
standarize. The Beetle could still be counterculatural and used in the modern quest for
individuality. Question 3: How would you evaluate the different positioning options?
Hollensen 2007 states the third phase in the IMS model is the screening of the
markets. Following Arnold Communications research, VW had assessed and
developed their potential markets. Now was the time to select and screen the best of
the segment opportunities. VW had deduced that their two main target markets would
be 18 to 34 year olds and the baby boomers in the over 40 s range. Both of these
markets, much like the VW research showed similar persnality traits. However,
due to VW s lack of budget it was not possible to target both markets. VW had to
decide where to position the new Beetle. For the younger market, utilising the
successful Drivers Wanted campaign and therefore putting the Beetle under the VW
umberalla. Or for the baby boomers, by developing a seperate campaign to fully
utilise the nostalgic leverage and to use the Beetle as a Hero brand for VW. 18

Water Contamination Caused By Hydraulic Fracturing
Water Contamination Due to Hydraulic Fracturing in Pennsylvania Natural gas is a
fossil fuel that plays a critical role in the demand and supply of energy in the United
States. It is considered to be a clean burning transition fuel. Compared to coal and oil,
natural gas combustion does not generate as much pollution and is therefore
considered an ideal partner for renewable energy resources. Natural gasis extracted
from shale formations underground that require horizontal drilling and hydraulic
fracturing hydrofracking or fracking . This drilling and extraction method is
currently considered a global widespread issue due to the rapid increase in the
amount of new gas wells that threatens the quality of water around the source
(Entriken, Evans White, Johnson Hagenbuch, 2011). Hydraulic Fracturing is a
process where high pressure fracking fluids are forced into rich shale to extract
natural resources. These fracking fluids are a mixture of proppants and chemical
additives such as surfactants, biocides, fiction reducers and other compounds meant
to help in the process of freeing the trapped gas . In addition, the million gallons of
water injected along with the fracking fluids return as flowback water and this
produced water have the potential to mix with nearby aquifers and surface water . As
a result, there is a considerable amount of public concern about water contamination
due to this process of hydrofracking (Thurman, Ferrer, Biotevogel Borch, 2014).

3 Economic Principles You Can Apply to Your Life

1933599909_d5dde5519e_mThe law of diminishing returns states that if one factor
of production is increased while the others remain constant, the overall returns will

added to harvest a wheat field, at some point each additional laborer will add
relatively less output than his predecessor did, simply because he has less and less of

Racism During The 19th Century
During the 19th century, racism was an established and widely accepted ideology
throughout the Antebellum South. Both Frederick Law Olmsted and John C.
Calhoun portray typical racist ideology during the 19th century in Antebellum South.
In his travelogue of the South, A Journey in the Seaboard Slave States; With Remarks
on Their Economy , Olmsted advocated for the free soil movement. On the other
hand, Calhoun advocated for slaveryin his 1837 speech, The Positive Good of
Slavery before the United States Senate. The free soil movement was an anti slavery
movement that in fact did not advocate for equal rights among blacks and whites, but
advocated that free men on free soil was a superior system to traditional slavery.
Surprisingly, anti slavery was much different to abolitionism. The goal of
abolitionism was the immediate emancipation of all slaves and the establishment of
equal rights among blacks and whites. The goal of anti slavery was the eventual
emancipation of all slaves with the understanding that blacks were inferior to whites.
Although both advocated for two distinct social standards for the African American
people, both had incorporated within their ideology the racist concept that African
Americans and their ancestors were inferior to white Americans.
Calhoun, during his speech before the Senate, argued the Positive Good of slavery.
Calhoun attempted to sway his audience into believing that slavery was not the evil
or immoral act as portrayed his
Why Did The United States Declared War On Spain
On the day of April 25, 1898, the United States declared war on Spain. There had
been war scares between the two before but now it had become real. There were
many suspicions because of the sinking of the American Battleship Maine in Havana
Harbor, which happened on February 15, 1989. The battleship was sent to protect the
Americans that were in Cuba. The United StatesCongress had certain resolutions that
would make Cuba independent from Spain, and that authorized United States
military intervention to make the Spanish leave Cuba and surrender their control.
Not only would that benefit Cuba and allow them to gain independence, but it
would also benefit the United States with some sort of profit or power from Cuba.
The Spanish didn t agree to leaving, therefore that started a war, which the United
States officially declared. The president at the time, a Republican, William Mckinley,
did not wish to go to war, but was pushed to do so.... Show more content on

Americans wanted to have economic relations with Cuba, which is another reason
why they didn t want Spain having control over them any longer. Through the

struggle that still had not been resolved. That war was concluded with a treaty that
was never even enforced, Spain still would not let Cuba have independence. The
Cuban Revolutionary Party was established on January 5, 1892 in the United
States to again try and gain independence for Cuba. The party was first in New
York City and Philadelphia, and then spread to Tampa and Key West in Florida.
The Philippines were beginning to become weary of the Spanish rule as well and
they wanted changes in their government. The Philippine s wanted to be peaceful,

Traits Of A Healthy Family Analysis
Traits Of A Healthy Family
In today s society, the definition of family has greatly evolved from the traditional
meaning. Family can consist of more than just blood relatives. It can contain groups
of people living together who love and support each other (Kaakinen, Gedaly Duff,
Coehlo, Harman Hanson, 2010). As a nurse in an ICU you must take care of the
patient as well as the family. I will be discussing a time I cared for a patient and the
experience I had with their family. I will state the different roles within the family as
well as my role as a family healthcare nurse.
Working in the ICU, I frequently care for patients who are at their end of life. Every
family seems to deal with death of a loved one in different ways. Some are active ...

Write A 5 Paragraph For Research Paper
Write a 5 paragraph essay on either how a roller coaster works; and explain utilizing
Newton s 3 laws of motion, gravity, and friction. Be sure to include an introduction
and conclusion.
Do you ever wonder why things move and stop? Do you ever wonder why things
move up and down? The reason behind motion is something called the 4 forces,
thrust, lift, drag, and gravity. Thrust is the forcewhich pushes an object forward. Lift
is the force which causes an object to fly. Drag is the force which slows an object
down while it is moving. And gravity is the force which pulls every object down.
The motion of bodies to these 4 forces are described by 3 Laws. They are called
Newton s Laws Of Motion. We can use these laws to help understand the physics
Epictetus Vs Socrates
One piece of advice offered by Epictetus that Socrates would agree with is that if
you want to make progress, let people think you are a mindless fool about externals,
and do not desire a reputation for knowing about them (#13). Socrates does not try to
convince others that he has supreme knowledge or expertise, nor does he have the
desire too. However, since the oracleproclaimed that Socratesis the wisest of all men,
he repeatedly proves to pompous individuals that they are not wise, even though they
think they are. Socrates is considered so wise because he consciously admits what he
doesn t know, rather than lying to himself like most other men (Apology, 22 d e).
Socrates would also approve of Epictetus statements regarding death.

Abstract
The decision making process has six stages. These stages consist of identifying and
diagnosing the problem, generating alternative solutions, evaluating alternatives,
making the choice, implementing the decision, and evaluate the decision. Choosing
to go back to school and what school to attend was a problem that I had that needed
to be figured out. I did not use the decision making process; if I had I am not sure if
my decision would have been the same.
Deciding to go back to school was something I thought about for a few months but
taking the steps to do so was something that only took an hour to do. The decision

Also if I had taken the steps to talk to daycares about putting my youngest child in
one, I would not have to worry about finding a babysitter when I went to school.
The decision making process would have made me ask questions about what I
wanted and what I could do. The process also would have allowed me to evaluate
my decision and determine if a community college would have been right. My
problem was going back to school and which school to attend. I may not have
followed the decision making process but I do believe I have made the right choice.
The decision making process has six stages: identify and diagnose the problem,
generate alternative solutions, evaluate alternatives, make the choice, implement the
decision, and evaluate the decision. The decision making process can be very
effective if one were to use it.

Fatah And Hamas Conflict
The violence pointed back to when Palestinians protested against the Israelis from
occupying the West Bank and Gaza by violence and civil unrest, which brought on a
series of action called Intifada (uprising) in the middle east. The Prime Minister
Yitzhak Rabin shook hands with the Palestinian at the White House after signing the
Oslo Agreement. This agreement failed to hold and strength and the region became
unsettled, which caused conflict with the Palestinian leaders. Hamas gains their
popular support through well funded social actions, which grew out of the Muslim

two political parties. Fatah was not happy with the Palestinian choosing Hamas to

Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Essay
Chantal Fauconier
Jane Austen, a writer in 19th Century England, wrote about what she knew; namely
the societal norms of her era and class. In a time where men were given all the status
and privileges, she wrote novels predominantly about women, their position in
society, and the roles that they played. Since women were not entitled to property,
they would often grow up with the goal of finding a suitable husband
(Guidelines 1990:1). It is for this reason that people have criticised
Jane Austen s writings saying that she reinforced the norms of patriarchy by
reassuring the reader about the order and stability of society. However her novels
contain more than this in that her characters often go against the conventional norms

Therefore, when Mr. Collins arrogantly tells Elizabeth that My situation in life, my
connections with the family of De Bourgh, and my relationship to your own are
circumstances highly in my favour ... it is by no means certain that another offer of
marriage may ever be made to you (Austen1990: 97 98), she politely refused saying
I thank you again and again for the honour you have done me in your proposals, but
to accept them is absolutely impossible. My feelings in every respect forbid it
(Austen 1990: 98).
Mr. Collins was shocked by her refusal as he expected her to conform to the societal
conventions. This is one instance of rebellion versus conformity in the novel.
Elizabeth s rebellion (and insistence of going against the conventional reasons for
marrying) is contrasted with Charlotte s conformity. Charlotte accepts Mr. Collin s
proposal as she is twenty seven and needs to secure her financial stability, knowing
that another proposal might not come. Charlotte therefore, unlike
Elizabeth, married for money and not for love (Newton in Clark 1994:
131). Elizabeth thus sought her future husband with regards to how she felt about
him and rebels against the expectations of society.
Therefore, Unlike Charlotte, Elizabeth will not violate
Optogenetic Manipulation In Transgenic Rats
To effectively integrate the applications of optogenetics in a living organism, there
needs to be previous genetic manipulation to enable the rat to be receptive to
optogenetic technologies. The genetic manipulation involves creating transgenic rats.
Transgenic manipulation involves the movement or insertion of a genein an organism
that does not normally possess the gene. The gene of interest is the gene for
halorhodopsin, and to produce rats that possess this gene requires injecting a DNA
construct into a fresh embryo. A DNA construct is an artificially constructed segment
of nucleic acid that is transplanted in the cell. The DNA construct is usually
constructed as a plasmid. The construct must contain a DNA insert, which has the
gene sequence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The primary antibody is the antibody that will bind to the protein of interest. This is
generated by exposing the halorhodopsin protein to a rat so that an immune response
of antibodies can be generated and these antibodies are harvested from the rat. This
antibody will bind to the protein of interest during incubation. The detection,
however, is done with the use of a secondary antibody generated from another animal.
When unbound primary antibodies are removed from the blotting sheet, the
secondary antibody can be used to detect bound primary antibodies. The secondary
antibody will be modified with a fluoresce tag that lights up when the secondary
antibody binds with the bonded primary antibody. If there is a detectable fluoresce
signal, then there is the halorhodopsin protein present in the blot. The amount of
fluoresce indicates how much of the halorhodopsin gene is being generated. With the
confirmation that HaloX gene was properly inserted into the genome, pain testing
with optogenetics can
Decision To Go To College
Going to college became a modern tradition. Parents, in America, save money
throughout their child s life to ensure that he or she will have the opportunity to go
to the best college that money can buy. On the other hand, in Brazil, teenagers
sweat, cry, and bleed to pass the exam t a public school, and if they do not pass it is a
year of study and money jeopardized. Before taking any step further in the decision
on going to collegeor not, I will analyze the opportunity on an economic point of
view. First, it is important to define some terms such as opportunity cost and trade
off, so I can be able to define what are mine before making any decisions. A trade
off is giving up something in return for another. For example, going to college means
giving up time where I could be volunteering and money that I could use to travel the
world. Next, an opportunity cost is the next best alternative to what you are doing at
the moment. Moreover, I would say my opportunity cost is traveling the world, it...

Price is the monetary value of something. For example, the price of a chocolate bar
is five dollars. Cost is the measure of what must be sacrificed to purchase a product.
Using the same chocolate bar example, to buy it means giving up on five packs of
mints. In addition, some of the costs of going to college, for me, mean not going to
China nor Australia in the next ten years. Besides the trade offs, opportunity cost,
and costs going to college has benefits that are able to suppress the sacrifices.
Nothing can mimic the college experience. It is an eye opening time in life, to grow
and learn. Gain experience and obtain knowledge. On top of everything, in the area
that I like to pursue a career, I also need a diploma that calls attention, to ensure other
opportunities. Unfortunately, in the scientific field where you went to college and
who you got your knowledge from can set back countless job
Pieter Bruegel The Harvesters Essay
The Harvesters The Harvesters is a landscape painting, painted by Pieter Bruegal
the Elder, in the Netherlands in 1565. The art is of wheat harvesters who are
working in the field, and apparently taking a break in the shade of a tree. The
people in the painting are small in the painting, though there are many of them,
which led me to determine the peasants are the focus. Bruegel painted the peasants
eating under the pear tree while the others are harvesting wheat. This phenomenon
relates to the culture and ideas of the people in that era. The Metropolitan Museum
of Art calls The Harvesters a watershed in the history of Western art and the first
modern landscape . The workers carrying sheaves of wheat through the clearing, the
people bathing in the pond, the children playing and the ships far away convey a
sense of distance. Bruegel used the medium of oil to be used on wood when painting
The Harvesters . He painted on the paint lightly, and delicately so the brush strokes
were almost untraceable. Single strands of hay are detectable in the patch, as well as
extravagant detail in the far background. Throughout the entire painting, the wood
does not show through, signifying completely opaque colors.... Show more content on

The Harvesters is essentially, I think, a visual contemplation on the near and far. The
near focus is the peasants themselves. Bruegal shows us factual people: the man
slouched with overtiredness, or drunkenness; the famished eaters; the men finishing
their work before their lunch break. Yet, Bruegal exaggerates them somewhat. He
sees a woman with straw like hair, and another women hiking through the fields
moving grain heaps. Bruegal has compassion for the unforgiving life of the peasants.
He paints the faces of the peasants as people who are almost
The Benefits Of Planned Parenthood
The issue that is to be discussed is if the government should continue to fund
Planned Parenthood. This question is a sociological issue because it can affect
millions of people because in a year Planned Parenthood can help four million
people who are mainly low income, of all religions, and race (Berg). Not only that,
but is it something that is constantly being discussed in the media and on the floor,
so it is something that we should be focusing on right now. I will say that I am a
supporter of Planned Parenthood and I am open that I am also a patient there as
well because to me Planned Parenthood is more than just what the media shows, but
even so I will stay objective to be ethical in this research(Schaefer). One of the topic I
would like to search is how Planned Parenthood is funded by the government. Most
people believe that a portion of their taxes are taken out and given to these clinics
that people can just go in and receive free healthcare. Some believe that the
government writes Planned Parenthood a check and that money comes from the
people. However, these are both incorrect and that is why I believe this is one of
the main topics to search into because this is something that can affect everyone
whether or not they go to Planned Parenthood. This also goes hand in hand with
another topic I would like to search into: how does Planned Parenthood affect
people? With this, I would like to find out why people choose to go to Planned
Parenthood, why society does not
The Merger Of U.s. Airways And American Airlines
Since the merger of U.S. Airways and American Airlines, most people would now
agree we are living in the age of airline oligopoly. Oligopolies form when there s a
state of restricted competition, and new companies cannot break into the industry for
reasons like high entry costs or government restrictions. This is the condition of the
airlineindustry, today. In order to breach the oligopolistic nature of the airline
industry, airlines must be able to break through high barriers to entry such as:
retaining substantial capital requirements, having the need for technical and
technological ingenuity and jurisdiction of patent rights. In addition, airplanes must
be purchased, employees must be trained and facilities must be procured. Even after
all these expenditures, some airlines still experience substantial financial losses. As a
result, most of these airlines experiencing a financial hardship are subject to an airline
merger. For this reason, the major airlines in the United States now consist of four
competing large carriers: American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and
Southwest Airlines. These companies have survived the deregulation of the airline
industry and sustained their places at the top of the industry. In an effort to stand out
in an oligopolistic industry, airlines must experience: economy of scale, growth
through merger, mutual dependence and price rigidity and non price competition.
In the oligopolistic airline industry, economy of scale enables
what makes an excellent film Essay
What makes an excellent film?
It took me a little while to come up with an answer to, What makes an excellent
film? There really is no answer, actually. I believe that an excellent film is within the
eyes and emotions of the audience. After researching and discovering what actually
won Oscars and Golden Globe awards, it came down to what the people thought, and
the popularity of a film. It is extremely hard to predict what will win these awards
before the movie is even released to the public.
Before really thinking about the subject, some obvious traits of what I would
consider an excellent film would be superior acting, beautiful scenery, etc., such as
many present categories in the Academy or Golden Globe Awards. Of course I could

The only other time that this had happened was in the 1950 s, for Ben Hur. These
definitely have something to do with what makes an excellent film, but I also believe
that the personal connection and emotions that someone has with a film is just as
important.
I feel that the emotional connection that people make with a film is, in most cases,
an extremely important quality that directors can emphasize on in /their work.
Whether it is a realistic movie that is based off of a true story, or a children s
Disney movie, anyone can experience a sense of a character s point of view.
Depending on the type of film (horror, suspense, comedy, drama, etc.), this
emotional connection can vary among different people. In a classic Disney film
such as Bambi, children can relate to Bambi. They can easily understand the type of
experiences that he goes through such as having friends (Thumper, a joyous rabbit,
and Flower, a loving skunk), playing on an icy pond, and even going through an
emotional event of losing a loved one (the death of Bambi s mother).
In general, people rarely want to watch films that they know they won t enjoy. This
is why there are so many types of films, and different people have different views on
what makes an excellent film . The media can have an

Friends are important for people to get through life. They can help with personal

are emergency exit doors on both sides of the stage. The sound booth is located in
the back of the auditorium, between the two entrance doors. It contains some
electronic equipment and a computer that has the lyrics typed up in PowerPoint

Most people arrive between 7:15 and 7:30 PM on Wednesdays. We open up with
praise and worship shortly after 7:30. There is a band that consists of a worship
leader, three or four backup singers, some guitars, a keyboard, percussion, and a
violin. The leader and singers rotate every week. The song lyrics are typed in a
PowerPoint presentation and displayed onto the screen on the stage. Next, there are
prayer requests, praise reports, and the offering. All members of the group are given
the chance to say what they desire. Different group members collect the offering

  • 11. Essay on Offshore Drilling Offshore Drilling What is it? Drilling for oil in the ocean is one of the greatest technological breakthroughs in recent decades, and many new techniques have been developed to profit from the abundance of oil underneath the ocean floor. While drilling for oil has been around for hundreds of years in one form or the another, the effective extraction of petroleum from beneath the sea floor did not surface until the last forty years. The search for oil often turns out to be unproductive, but this practice is vital for the economic future of many nations. In order for any drilling to take place, an offshore drilling rig must first be installed. These offshore platforms can be situated in water up to a several hundred meters in depth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These production platforms come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and types, which are dependent on the dimensions of the field, the depth of the water and how far the oil and/or gas field is from shore. The platforms are generally made of steel and fixed to the seabed with steel posts. These platforms harbor all of the processing equipment for the well and can house a maximum of 80 workers. In addition, platforms have concrete structures large enough to store oil, with gravity keeping them situated on the seabed Explanation of Drilling Drilling begins once the drill bit is lowered to the ocean floor. This first step is referred to as spudding. There are two types of drill bits: (1) a roller cone or rock bit which usually has three cones armed with steel or tungsten carbide teeth or buttons; or (2) a diamond bit, imbedded with small industrial diamonds. The drill bit is attached to drill pipe and rotated by a turntable on the platform floor. As the hole deepens, extra lengths of drill pipe are attached. (Offshore Drilling) The diameter of the drill bit varies from a diameter of 36 inches, which is used when the hole in the ocean floor is first started, to a diameter of 8.5 inches. The total length of a drill pipe is 30 feet. The time it takes for the drill to reach the oil and gas trap could be weeks. In order to move the drill cuttings

Women could spend more time in the home if they don t work and if they look after young children and elderly people are more likely to spend time inside due to lack of mobility. It is interesting that they have the most fear as statistically they are the least likely to be a victim of crime and actually young males are the most likely to be victims especially of violent crime. Well known research into this is the cultivation analysis of Gerbner et al., which is presented in Hales Criminology , in the eighth chapter that deals with understanding the connections between crime and the media. Gerbner, over several decades, carried out survey questionnaires and content analysis to find out the influence of violence of prime time US television programmes. Gerbner deemed those who watched more than 4 hours of TV a day to be heavy television viewers and found that they had a higher fear of crime as television portrays the world as scary . There is also a difference between the way stories are reported in newspapers. A tabloid will generally have an over representation of violent crime if compared to broadsheet papers. She was now Bellona, the goddess of war, and in triumph she had led her people to glory, defeating the greatest power in the 16th century world. Spain was the most powerful country in the world. As early as 1585, Philip had begun to prepare a great fleet that, under the Spanish commander Santa Cruz, would invade England. At first the aim of the Armada was to liberate the captive Queen of Scots, but when Mary was executed for conspiring Elizabeth s death in 1587, Philip planned to invade England in the name of his daughter, the Infanta Isabella. Philip believed he had a genuine claim to the English throne, both by descent from John of Gaunt, and as Queen Mary I s husband. The purpose of the mission was to depose Elizabeth, put Mary/Isabella on the throne, and make England Roman Catholic once again. It was perhaps an omen, however, that from the start, the Spanish faced problems. Santa Cruz died, and his successor, the Duke of Medina Sedonia, was not at all suited to the post. He had little faith in the enterprise and little experience. He begged Philip to release him from the charge, but the King was adamant. The enterprise had received another set back when Francis Drake and his men had sailed to the coast of Spain and destroyed many of the Spanish ships at Cadiz. Queen Elizabeth had heard mutterings of the intended invasion of England by

As explained through Lord of the Flies by William Golding, these pivotal building blocks of a civilization can play a great part into bringing a group of people to society, or drag them all down into savagery. The conch shell is an excellent example of political legitimacyand democratic power. Although, while this device can be used for good; providing others with order and sanity, it can also be used for the utter destruction of a civilization. The conch shell in Lord of the Flies by William Goldingbegins as civilization and order, becomes the fragility of power and influence, and concludes with the collapse of any civilized thoughts. Civilization and order can be found within every society, and this is no exception within the group of boys in the beginning of the novel. Throughout the exposition of the story, governance over the group of boys was unknown. No order was established to influence the boys to cooperate and fulfill the needed tasks to get off the island. Although, there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance...yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with the delicate thing balanced on his knees, was set apart (Golding 22). First I will provide an overview of what rational choice theory is and why it has staked such a prominent position in the discipline of political science. In this section I conclude that rational choice theory has indeed developed advanced methodologies at telling us how rational agents should behave. Then in my second section I will show, using the empirical case of the free rider problem and collective action, as well as the case of suicide terrorism, that rational choice theory cannot adequately account for actual political phenomena. In my third section I will provide some reasons for why this is the case. Finally, in my concluding section I will posit a theoretical framework incorporating some refinements to the assumptions behind rational choice theory that would better aid a predictive (but not universalist) political science. What is Rational Choice Theory? Rational choice theory is actually more than one theory per se, but the basic similarities among its variants mean that they can be intelligibly amalgamated for the purposes of critiquing its implementation in political science. Therefore public choice theory, positive political science, rational actor models, and the economic approach to politics, among others, refer to what we may call rational choice theory for the purposes of this essay. While many people believe that most families in America are well functioning families, the novel Montana 1948 shows a good portrayal of a dysfunctional family because they did not have hope for the future and without hope dysfunction will spread through generations of families like a disease, destroying many lives along the way. Some children in today s society aren t all taught the do s and don ts of what is publicly accepted. From different environments children are raised in, they think that whatever they are taught is the right thing. They have no prior knowledge of what is normal. As Marie Hartwell Walker states in Why Dysfunctional Families Stay That Way she shares that, Because they don t know what normal is, a dysfunctional family is participating in the pretense that they are a normal family bringing up children within the range of what is normal. Because we live in a culture that respects family privacy, someone usually has to get badly hurt before the illusion is questioned by anyone outside its ranks, (Hartwell Walker). The main reason of why children have a hard time blending into society is because they are unwilling to change their ideas and values for the fact that they were taught differently. And for the fact that they were taught a different way they get offended when someone tries to change them or criticize them on their upbringing and lifestyle. John Keats s Poem Analysis Underlying Methods of Communication in Keats To Autumn In To Autumn, a poem by John Keats, we see a multi leveled examination of mortality concealed within a seemingly simple ode to the fall season. The poem opens with an overwhelming appeal to the senses. Anyone familiar with the common motifs of Autumn will identify heavily with the first stanza, for Autumn is a time of ripening pumpkins and relaxed musings. The second stanza has a tone reminiscent of the feeling that accompanies the end of a hard day s work. However, as the second part of this poem ends, the reader feels a dull pang of some unidentified negative emotion. This emotion is similar to the guilt of relaxed, yet hardworking men who are too proud to be lazy, even for a moment. The ending stanza of the poem arrives and passes like the end of Autumn, swiftly (Keats 763 764). The speaker in the poem seems to be scrambling to appreciate the wonders of Autumn before the swift, bitter end. The progression of ideas, imagery, and tone are highly reminiscent to the thoughts of a man who, at the end of his life, is trying to find meaning and beauty in his life as he approaches his swift, bitter end. The poignancy of this poem is found in the distinct levels by which Keats communicates emotions. In the progression of Keats To Autumn, there are three basic levels of understanding: the outright evolution of ideas seen in the initial reading, the contradictory tone changes, and the subtle paradoxes found

For instance, companies need to be given numbers or percentages of the importance to complying with the allowances they are given, so that they violations do not occur. Furthermore, giving companies the estimated reduction in cost that they will experience by complying will allowed the companies to want to keep their emissions by implementing new plans that will help achieve this, thus the incentives provide positive reinforcement. On the other side of the spectrum, if violations occur companies have to deal with penalties, which may be monetary (negative punishment). To prevent the leakage element from occurring, there is a need to promote social status for the companies that comply with the program. Promoting social status is a form of consequence strategy, since it promotes the continual environmental behavior (e.g. reducing emissions). The government can utilize feedback by letting the companies know how their change in behavior helps climate change and providing information on how to change their behaviors to reduce emissions. What s more, the companies can gain feed back from the public,

But, since music has been given rules and explored as an art form, it has been innovated and changed in ways that changed it forever. The invention and of electricity and machines changed the way that music was approached, as much as exploring what a chord is. Electricity also brought about a new, interesting genre of music; electronic music, which is any type of music that is produced by a machine. Russolo created several compositions for his instruments, which were received critically by the public. Although the ideals of Russolo were very influential, neither his musical scores nor his intonarumori survived, which means the assumption can be made that neither were of great interest to the musical world (Morgan 116 117). Water Contamination Caused By Hydraulic Fracturing Water Contamination Due to Hydraulic Fracturing in Pennsylvania Natural gas is a fossil fuel that plays a critical role in the demand and supply of energy in the United States. It is considered to be a clean burning transition fuel. Compared to coal and oil, natural gas combustion does not generate as much pollution and is therefore considered an ideal partner for renewable energy resources. Natural gasis extracted from shale formations underground that require horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing hydrofracking or fracking . This drilling and extraction method is currently considered a global widespread issue due to the rapid increase in the amount of new gas wells that threatens the quality of water around the source (Entriken, Evans White, Johnson Hagenbuch, 2011). Hydraulic Fracturing is a process where high pressure fracking fluids are forced into rich shale to extract natural resources. These fracking fluids are a mixture of proppants and chemical additives such as surfactants, biocides, fiction reducers and other compounds meant to help in the process of freeing the trapped gas . In addition, the million gallons of water injected along with the fracking fluids return as flowback water and this produced water have the potential to mix with nearby aquifers and surface water . As a result, there is a considerable amount of public concern about water contamination due to this process of hydrofracking (Thurman, Ferrer, Biotevogel Borch, 2014). Because

The free soil movement was an anti slavery movement that in fact did not advocate for equal rights among blacks and whites, but advocated that free men on free soil was a superior system to traditional slavery. Surprisingly, anti slavery was much different to abolitionism. The goal of abolitionism was the immediate emancipation of all slaves and the establishment of equal rights among blacks and whites. The goal of anti slavery was the eventual emancipation of all slaves with the understanding that blacks were inferior to whites. Although both advocated for two distinct social standards for the African American people, both had incorporated within their ideology the racist concept that African Americans and their ancestors were inferior to white Americans. Calhoun, during his speech before the Senate, argued the Positive Good of slavery. Calhoun attempted to sway his audience into believing that slavery was not the evil or immoral act as portrayed his

In a time where men were given all the status and privileges, she wrote novels predominantly about women, their position in society, and the roles that they played. Since women were not entitled to property, they would often grow up with the goal of finding a suitable husband (Guidelines 1990:1). First, it is important to define some terms such as opportunity cost and trade off, so I can be able to define what are mine before making any decisions. A trade off is giving up something in return for another. For example, going to college means giving up time where I could be volunteering and money that I could use to travel the world. Next, an opportunity cost is the next best alternative to what you are doing at the moment. Moreover, I would say my opportunity cost is traveling the world, it... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Price is the monetary value of something. For example, the price of a chocolate bar is five dollars. Cost is the measure of what must be sacrificed to purchase a product. Using the same chocolate bar example, to buy it means giving up on five packs of mints. In addition, some of the costs of going to college, for me, mean not going to China nor Australia in the next ten years. Besides the trade offs, opportunity cost, and costs going to college has benefits that are able to suppress the sacrifices. Nothing can mimic the college experience. It is an eye opening time in life, to grow and learn. Gain experience and obtain knowledge. On top of everything, in the area that I like to pursue a career, I also need a diploma that calls attention, to ensure other opportunities. Unfortunately, in the scientific field where you went to college and who you got your knowledge from can set back countless job
  • 52. Pieter Bruegel The Harvesters Essay The Harvesters The Harvesters is a landscape painting, painted by Pieter Bruegal the Elder, in the Netherlands in 1565. The art is of wheat harvesters who are working in the field, and apparently taking a break in the shade of a tree. The people in the painting are small in the painting, though there are many of them, which led me to determine the peasants are the focus. Bruegel painted the peasants eating under the pear tree while the others are harvesting wheat. This phenomenon relates to the culture and ideas of the people in that era. The Metropolitan Museum of Art calls The Harvesters a watershed in the history of Western art and the first modern landscape . The workers carrying sheaves of wheat through the clearing, the people bathing in the pond, the children playing and the ships far away convey a sense of distance. Bruegel used the medium of oil to be used on wood when painting The Harvesters . He painted on the paint lightly, and delicately so the brush strokes were almost untraceable. Single strands of hay are detectable in the patch, as well as extravagant detail in the far background. Throughout the entire painting, the wood does not show through, signifying completely opaque colors.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Harvesters is essentially, I think, a visual contemplation on the near and far. The near focus is the peasants themselves. Bruegal shows us factual people: the man slouched with overtiredness, or drunkenness; the famished eaters; the men finishing their work before their lunch break. Yet, Bruegal exaggerates them somewhat. He sees a woman with straw like hair, and another women hiking through the fields moving grain heaps. Bruegal has compassion for the unforgiving life of the peasants. He paints the faces of the peasants as people who are almost
  • 53. The Benefits Of Planned Parenthood The issue that is to be discussed is if the government should continue to fund Planned Parenthood. This question is a sociological issue because it can affect millions of people because in a year Planned Parenthood can help four million people who are mainly low income, of all religions, and race (Berg). Not only that, but is it something that is constantly being discussed in the media and on the floor, so it is something that we should be focusing on right now. I will say that I am a supporter of Planned Parenthood and I am open that I am also a patient there as well because to me Planned Parenthood is more than just what the media shows, but even so I will stay objective to be ethical in this research(Schaefer). One of the topic I would like to search is how Planned Parenthood is funded by the government. Most people believe that a portion of their taxes are taken out and given to these clinics that people can just go in and receive free healthcare. Some believe that the government writes Planned Parenthood a check and that money comes from the people. However, these are both incorrect and that is why I believe this is one of the main topics to search into because this is something that can affect everyone whether or not they go to Planned Parenthood. This also goes hand in hand with another topic I would like to search into: how does Planned Parenthood affect people? With this, I would like to find out why people choose to go to Planned Parenthood, why society does not
  • 54. The Merger Of U.s. Airways And American Airlines Since the merger of U.S. Airways and American Airlines, most people would now agree we are living in the age of airline oligopoly. Oligopolies form when there s a state of restricted competition, and new companies cannot break into the industry for reasons like high entry costs or government restrictions. This is the condition of the airlineindustry, today. In order to breach the oligopolistic nature of the airline industry, airlines must be able to break through high barriers to entry such as: retaining substantial capital requirements, having the need for technical and technological ingenuity and jurisdiction of patent rights. In addition, airplanes must be purchased, employees must be trained and facilities must be procured. Even after all these expenditures, some airlines still experience substantial financial losses. As a result, most of these airlines experiencing a financial hardship are subject to an airline merger. For this reason, the major airlines in the United States now consist of four competing large carriers: American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines. These companies have survived the deregulation of the airline industry and sustained their places at the top of the industry. In an effort to stand out in an oligopolistic industry, airlines must experience: economy of scale, growth through merger, mutual dependence and price rigidity and non price competition. In the oligopolistic airline industry, economy of scale enables
  • 55. what makes an excellent film Essay What makes an excellent film? It took me a little while to come up with an answer to, What makes an excellent film? There really is no answer, actually. I believe that an excellent film is within the eyes and emotions of the audience. After researching and discovering what actually won Oscars and Golden Globe awards, it came down to what the people thought, and the popularity of a film. It is extremely hard to predict what will win these awards before the movie is even released to the public. Before really thinking about the subject, some obvious traits of what I would consider an excellent film would be superior acting, beautiful scenery, etc., such as many present categories in the Academy or Golden Globe Awards. Of course I could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only other time that this had happened was in the 1950 s, for Ben Hur. These definitely have something to do with what makes an excellent film, but I also believe that the personal connection and emotions that someone has with a film is just as important. I feel that the emotional connection that people make with a film is, in most cases, an extremely important quality that directors can emphasize on in /their work. Whether it is a realistic movie that is based off of a true story, or a children s Disney movie, anyone can experience a sense of a character s point of view. Depending on the type of film (horror, suspense, comedy, drama, etc.), this emotional connection can vary among different people. In a classic Disney film such as Bambi, children can relate to Bambi. They can easily understand the type of experiences that he goes through such as having friends (Thumper, a joyous rabbit, and Flower, a loving skunk), playing on an icy pond, and even going through an emotional event of losing a loved one (the death of Bambi s mother). In general, people rarely want to watch films that they know they won t enjoy. This is why there are so many types of films, and different people have different views on what makes an excellent film . The media can have an
  • 56. Youth Group Friendships Essay Youth Group Friendships Friends are important for people to get through life. They can help with personal problems and are good company. Friends make people feel calmer, more relaxed, and can help take the focus off of stressful tasks. A nice place to find good friends is a youth group. I started attending a youth group of an upscale church in southeast Michigan on a regular basis after finishing my freshman year of high school. I had been going to that church on Sunday mornings since Kindergarten. I wanted to get closer to my friends and God. After my sophomore year, I stopped attending because of my demanding schoolwork. At youth group meetings, there are many different musical instruments on stage ranging from guitar to violin to drums. The sound booth is located in the back of the auditorium, between the two entrance doors. It contains some electronic equipment and a computer that has the lyrics typed up in PowerPoint presentations. The wall behind the sound booth is carpeted. The rest of the back wall is brick. The ceiling is black and quite high above the floor. Most people arrive between 7:15 and 7:30 PM on Wednesdays. We open up with praise and worship shortly after 7:30. There is a band that consists of a worship leader, three or four backup singers, some guitars, a keyboard, percussion, and a violin. The leader and singers rotate every week. The song lyrics are typed in a PowerPoint presentation and displayed onto the screen on the stage. Next, there are prayer requests, praise reports, and the offering. All members of the group are given the chance to say what they desire. Different group members collect the offering each week. Next, the group socializes for about five to ten minutes. The first part of socializing is having new people who have never been here before say their name

Two weeks, since the passing of Mr.Wayne, and the heartbroken atmosphere, is the aftermath of Mr. Wayne s absence(VACANCY).
