Lavon Julian
Dr. Percy Lavon Julian was a spearheading chemist whose findings enhanced the field of science and saved many lives. A grandson
of a slave, Julian grew up facing a lot of obstacles because of his skin color (Drew, 1950). African Americans during his time faced a
lot of challenges like racism. Julian rose above this racism and turned out to be among the most influential scientists of the 20th
century and a leader of civil and business rights.
Percy Lavon Julian was born in the year1989. Julian was lucky as his parents were educated and had an appreciation for education
which was not the case for most black Americans. Although his parents had a great appreciation for education, Julian attended a
segregated elementary school. There was no public high school for black individuals like Lavon. Hence, he had no option but to
enroll in a teacher training school for blacks (Drew, 1950).
In 1916, Julian enrolled at DePauw University having a tenth–grade education barely. On his first day in college, Julian remembers
being welcomed and greeted by a white man. He had never experienced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One most famous paper was entitled "Studies in the Indole Series V. The Complete Synthesis of Physostigmine". In the paper, Julian
and Josef explained how physostigmine is synthesized in the laboratory (Cobb, 1971). This article is what I think was the most
influential publication, Julian ever wrote.
Julian's other contribution to plant science was when he was working as a director in Glidden company. Following his successful
research, there was an explosive growth industry for soya beans (Cobb, 1971). He discovered new functions for the chemicals found
in soya beans. This discovery lessened problems in the world. For example, one protein called Aer–o–form was used as fire–
retardant foam in fire extinguishers. The development helped to save lives of soldiers during World War

The Sholes And Glidden Typewriter And The Second...
The Gilded Age, or commonly known as the Second Industrial Revolution, lived up to its extravagant name that Mark Twain had
given to the era. Inventions such as the telephone escalated communication among people despite the distance, and the creation of
the automobile helped everyone to move from one place to another in a much shorter time. Besides these well–known and
influential inventions, the Sholes and Glidden typewriter also contributed to the economic, industrial, and societal growth of the
American citizens in a subtle yet impactful way. Despite its old age, the typewriter still has a grand, yet not very obvious, influence
on a popular, modern day invention.
Prior to the creation of this typewriter, there were mainly two methods to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Sholes and Glidden typewriter had numerous abilities solved many problems that contributed to the growth of the industry.
Based on the article "Sholes & Glidden 'Type Writer' A Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark" by American Society of
Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Christopher Sholes and Carlos Glidden, with some help from a clock–builder Matthias Schwalbach,
James Densmore who provided financing with the development, a fellow inventor Samuel Soulé, and many others, had created the
sophisticated machine. After numerous refinements over seven years, the Sholes and Glidden typewriter adopted "a non–
alphabetical arrangement for the keys, resulting in the QWERTY layout." By spreading out the most commonly used letters such as
the vowels, the typists could type much faster than before. On a poster provided by the article "Type–Writer: two words,
hyphenated" by Mark Adams, the advertisement poster claimed that the Sholes and Glidden typewriter could type up to sixty to one
hundred words per minute, which was five times much faster than an expert penmen. Not only did the typewriter increased
typewriting speed, the QWERTY key arrangement also solved the jamming problem that previous typewriter caused. According to
the article "The Sholes & Glidden Type Writer, with the First QWERTY Keyboard" by Jeremy Norman, the typists in that time
period used a technique called "hunt and peck," a technique where typists would

A revolution is a change or replacement of society or government. A revolution is mainly heard of when a change in government
occurred or in a war like the American Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was a time of change through technology. During the
Second Industrial Revolution, new inventions were created to change the way of life. The light bulb was created and the factory
business was revived. The telephone was created and news was spread faster than it ever had. Airplanes and trains were created and
the transportation business was renewed. Although Christopher Shole's typewriter was not an original idea, his typewriter
revolutionized the place of women in the workplace.
Christopher Sholes was born on February 14, 1819 in Mooresburg, Pennsylvania. As a child, his family moved to Danville where he
grew up. In Danville, he became an apprentice printer for the Danville newspaper. Once he moved to Wisconsin, he joined the staff
of the Wisconsin Territory's legislative newspaper and then he became editor of the Wisconsin Inquirer in Madison. In 1841, he
moved to Southport to start the Southport Telegraph with Michael Frank. Then he moved to Milwaukee and became editor of the
Milwaukee Sentinel. In 1861, President Lincoln appointed him customs collector for the port of Milwaukee. Since Sholes was
always busy with his newspaper positions, he had little time to invent. He became partners in a machine shop with Samuel W. Soule,

Percy : An African American Chemist, Inventor, And...
Percy Lavon Julian was an African American chemist, inventor, and businessman however, he didn't start out that way. Percy was
born on April 11, 1899 in Montgomery, Alabama and was the grandson of a former slave (Britannica Biographies). He was the
oldest of his six siblings and his mother was a teacher and his father took a job as a railway mail clerk (Encyclopedia of World
Biography). Growing up, Percy faced racial prejudice not only in this personal life but also in his professional life. Percy attended
school up to eighth grade but because he was African American there was no high school open to any black students. He traveled to
Indiana and applied and got accepted to DePauw University of Greencastle, however since he was unable to attend high school he
had to take high school level classes at night to be able to be at the same educational level as his classmates (Bio.com). Despite not
going to high school, leaving his hometown, having to take night classes, Percy overcame all these obstacles and graduated as class
valedictorian and with Phi Beta Kappa honors.
Percy Julian shared his life with his wife Anna Johnson who was a sociologist at Howard University while he was teaching there as
well when they first met. They were married in 1935 and had two children. Percy and Anna ended up moving to Oak Park, Illinois
however before they could move in their house was firebombed (Bio.com).

The Mining Of Mining Industry
Mining is an essential need for humans to access coal which produce rich resource to generate electricity. Mining comes as
simplistic image of just people in hard hats with a pickaxe repeatedly pounding onto rocks until they gather desired materials.
However, mining requires a trade cost in order to get reliable energy resource, as coal mining influences and infatuated the
environment around it. In particular, surface mines, also known as strip mines, is a practice mining commonly used to access coal by
removing layers of overlying soil and rock. Additionally, strip mining requires heavy used of machines, such as bulldozers, power
shovels, and trucks in order to extract the resources from the ground. Surface mining is arguably the most effective type of mining,
as 60 percent of the world's materialistic coal comes from the practice of this type of mining. Thus tactics of surface mining at such
fast and furious pace is in not an efficient method for gathering resources, and will result in pollution and negligent on the land,
forests and soil, and water that environment provides naturally.
Surface mining, also known as strip mining, is a mining practice defined as "very shallow ore seam is first exposed by removing all
of the overlying soil and rock, otherwise known as the overburden. The ore is then excavated and removed from the surface." (Gates
& Blauvelt, Mining and Pollution) Alternatively, surface mining utilizes and removes the soil in order to yield high amounts of

Emma Eulogy Speech
I'm sure most of you know who I am, and I feel very honored that I was asked to speak on her behalf. Emma and I have been friends
for a very long time and I thought I would start by telling the story of Emma's life. She was born on April 3, 2001, here in Carroll. In
her younger years she was temperamental, and had some great stories to prove it. She screamed like she was getting murdered
because her mother wouldn't buy her a baby doll. She cried for a five hour car ride because she received the wrong kind of hash
browns. I think all these moments just made her family love her more and set the level of her sassiness for her future.
As she grew up her sassiness never went away. In high school she was just as sassy as she was when she was born, and at her work
she was even called the sass master. She kept her sass through college and until the day she died. It was one of my favorite qualities
of hers. Besides being sassy she was a natural born leader. Her coaches and teachers would tell her so. When she was in high school
she was a part of student council and at her college she was a part of the student government. After college she took a job at her old
high school, Glidden–Ralston. While she was working there she met her husband Liam Roberts. They dated for several years before
he proposed.
I remember their proposal. Liam had asked me to help him with it because he never wanted Emma to forget it. Emma loved goats,
like LOVED them. So I told him that he needed to ask her with

Why Is World War One Important
As it is called world war one was the first war that had the world involved. It all started when a terrorist shot and killed the Archduke
Franz Ferdinand of Austria, that then started the long list of wars being declared upon as basically everyone started declaring war on
each other. The war was very experimental as tons of new weapons were used. The main three weapons that played a major part of
the war were the protection of barbed wire, the extremely deadly machine gun and the terrible toxic gas. Theses weapons were a big
part of the war as they not only caused most of the deaths but also changed the complexion of war. In 1884 Sir Hiram Maxim
invented one of the most used and deadly weapons ever created, the machine gun. The machine gun was the first rapid fire gun that
could fire a long distance and kill with eas. Of course now it has been revamped now it shoot even faster and accurate but in world
war 1 this gun gave a massive advantage to anyone who had one. Without the invention of this type of gun no one would have a

Barbed wire was invented in 1874 by Joseph Glidden. Originally it was invented to keep cattle in a certain area. But in world war 1
Barbed wire was used as tool to keep out enemies from the areas. The reasons why barbed wire was very impactful in the war was
because it would tear through clothes and skin leaving the victim's body exposed to virus and infections and while if you be careful
and don't get cut by the wire it would take you awhile to get through leaving plenty of time for a sniper to pick you off. Also this
deadly wire was used to corral the enemies into one spot only to be blasted by artillery. Cleary Barbed wire is not as effective as it
was back in the day but now it is mainly used to keep prisoners from escaping their jails. Barbed wire play a massive role in world

I strongly believe that Percy L. Julian deserves a United States postage stamp. He was quite intelligent, educated, and hard–

reasons I strongly believe he deserves a United States postage stamp. Julian never had a chance at a completely normal education

there were no high schools open to black students. Instead, he went to Depauw University. When he went to the University he

Sociology Imagination
Sociologists differ in their understanding of the concept, but the range suggests several important commonalities.
Mills defined sociological imagination as "the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society."
The sociological imagination is the capacity to shift from one perspective to another: from the political to the psychological; from
examination of a single family to comparative assessment of the national budgets of the world; from the theological school to the
military establishment; from considerations of an oil industry to studies of contemporary poetry.[1]

In some introductory sociology classes, the sociological imagination is brought up, along with Mills and how he characterized the
sociological imagination as a critical quality of mind that would help men and women "to use information and to develop reason in
order to achieve lucid summations of what is going on in the world and of what may be happening within themselves."[4]
[edit] Uses of sociological imagination in filmsThe advantages of using popular films to enhance students' comprehension of
sociological topics is widely recognized. Those who teach courses in social problems report using films to teach about war, to aid
students in adopting a global perspective and to confront issues of race relations. There are benefits of using film as part of a
multimedia approach to teaching courses in popular culture. It also provides students of medical sociology with case studies for
hands–on observational experiences. It acknowledges the value of films as historical documentation of changes in cultural ideas,
materials, and institutions.
Feature films are used in introductory sociology courses to demonstrate the current relevance of sociological thinking and to show
how the sociological imagination helps us make sense of our social world. The underlying assumption is that the sociological
imagination is best developed and exercised in the

Why Life Is Better Now Than In The 1900's
The reason that life is better now than it was in the 1900's is because there are so many new advancements in medicine, new
technology, and the human lifespan is much longer than it ever has been.
In the 1900's, there were not many advances for medicine. Within the first ten years of the 1900's, the discovery of different blood
types and a cure for sleeping sickness was discovered. In 2013, doctors and scientists were able to grow a kidney in the U.S, and in
Japan, scientists and doctors grew the first human liver.
The life expectancy of males in the early 1900's, 1900 – 1910, range from the age of forty six and forty eight. For females in the
same time frame, the life expectancy ranged from the age of forty eight to fifty one. Now in the 2000's, 2000 – 2010, the life
expectancy of a male is anywhere from seventy four to seventy six. For females in the same time frame, the life expectancy ranged
from seventy nine to eighty one. The life expectancy for both males and females from the early 1900's to the early 2000's has nearly
doubled. As we see in the play "Our Town", one of the main characters(Emily Webb), dies at the age of twenty six. ... Show more

How Technology Has Hindered Our Workforce
Today's workforce is filled with a plethora of new technology that was not exposed to the world before. A lot of these technological
devices were seen with hopes to possibly make life easier for both personal and work life, which sounds great for employers
(Palmiere). With so much technology around and with a generation of tech savvy people he question arises of whether or not people
have become less productive in the workforce. With people checking their phone very often, and with so many social media
mediums to check people are beginning to believe that our dependence on our devices is hurting companies due to our attention

It has been stated that by companies giving and allowing their employees access to many different types of technology while on the
clock they are basically giving permission to their employees to lose focus. It is believed that when employees are accessing all
these many different form of technology, they are more likely to make mistakes because they are trying to multitask and stay
connected with their social lives while working. It can be seen as information overload when employees are constantly connected
because when they are always multitasking and connected with all other things at home and at work, they are never really focused
on one thing at a given time or give their all to a project so they are more prone to make mistakes and not show adequate attention to
the project. Information overload is not something that employers want inside of the workplace because it hinders the employees'
ability to do their job effectively and efficiently. When information overload is occurring employees take a longer time trying to
process the information that is being given to them, which means that company time is being wasted. When they are presented with
more than one thing at a time they have to compartmentalize them and arrange them in order of most important to least important.
But when they are constantly multitasking, instead of prioritizing the tasks, they siply try and do them all never really focusing on

Homelessness : The Problem Within The United States

are fighting for our country but they have no place to live after returning home. We hope that the next generation will either come up

Domestic violence is defined as emotionally or physically (or both) controlling an intimate partner, often involving physical assault,

homeless women were driven from their home by domestic violence in 2003 (ACLU Women 's Rights Project, n.d.). These numbers
are unthinkable when a person lives in the area, and knowing that it happens to just about anyone. Many women don't have the

Barbed Wire Essay
Barbed wire helped revolutionize the West by dividing up the land evenly and cheaply. However, some people out West found it to
be an impediment to moving across wide plains. Cowboys and Native Americans even came up with a new name for it, Devil's
Rope. Joseph Farwell Glidden was a very influential man in the creation of barbed wire and he forever changed the West and the
World. Barbed wire helped reform the West, but it had to start somewhere. Joseph Glidden saw a wire attachment at the DeKalb
County Fair presented by Henry M. Rose. He used a wood rail and hammered nails into it to hook onto a fence. Joseph Glidden was
there with Jacob Haish, and Isaac Ellwood. They each saw this and began to talk to Henry about it. Joseph ... Show more content on

Glidden was unsure about this, and he consulted his lawyer about it. The lawyer said to go for it, but to keep the royalties so he

so that he could monopolize the barbed wire industry and focus on the business aspect. His wife also said that Glidden had a better
design than he did, which is part of the reason he partnered with Glidden. Haish was a fierce contender, and he went to court to see
who got the patent, but Glidden eventually won. Joseph Glidden had patents already, so when he saw the barbed wire, he thought
that he could make that, so he did. He was a very creative man and he was intelligent too. Before he invented barbed wire he
invented something called the land roller. It had the wheels placed in special alignment so that the wheels did not go over the same
land twice. Barbed wire was needed out West, and Glidden's barbed wire was easy to transport so it went West. The wire migrated
West because Texas Longhorn Cattle would trample and graze on farmer's crops and the farmers hated it. Cattle would also get run
over by trains because they would cross in front of a train on the newly built Transcontinental Railroad. Barbed was put up to line
the railways for miles at a time. Some people like cattle drivers and Native Americans hated barbed wire so much that they came up

the president of Janmar Coatings, Inc., there are three ways to deploy Janmar products (Paints and sun–dries). First, since 60% ($80
million) of Janmar's architectural coatings products were sold in DFW area, the company should distribute more of its products to
that area in order to maximize sales. Regarding the non–DFW area, the majority (90%) of that area deals with "do–it–yourself"
method to paint their houses or rooms, and usually the decision effected by the price of the product. Therefore, Janmar has two
options for the non–DFW area, either to cut the prices of their products, or to develop a new lower quality category that has the same
brand name but cheaper than the premium category. The competition in Architectural coating segment are increasing. Companies
seeking growth and a higher sales base to support increasing costs are making acquisition. Major products of paint for the
architectural coatings segment include Sherwin–Williams, Benjamin Moore, the Glidden unit of Imperial Chemicals, PPG

My Accomplishment At Glidden Fence Builder
An accomplishment that set my life forward and taught me multiple traits and allowed my character to develop would have to be
when I set out, got a job, and saved up enough money to buy my first car. It was a summer I'll always remember. After my
sophomore year of high school I set out during the summer and got a job at Glidden Fence Company. I was nervous not working at
all previous to working at Glidden and started wondering whether I had gotten too far ahead of myself. I was assigned to a three man
crew and started my career as a fence builder, the crew leader was super nice to me and guided me in every step as I began to learn
how to do it myself. So long story short I threw myself into a foreign environment unaware of what the

At Glidden–Ralston the elementary kids look up to the high school kids. I have good leadership skills by being a good role model
for the elementary kids. I also have shown leadership by doing sports. For swim team, I have been an assistant coach since I turned
15. At practice, I help the head coach teach the little kids what to do. I have to show the younger kids what do to, and teach them
how to do things right. The last principle of National Honors Society is character. I do my best to show good character in school and
in the community. At school, I am responsible and I get all my work done on time. I also treat people with respect. I try my best to
treat my classmates, teachers, and people of the community with respect. Having good character will help me build better
relationships with people. I have developed a good relationship with my teachers, my classmates, and my coaches. The four

Commemorative Speech Essay
Welcome family and friends, today we gather here to celebrate the life of Whitney Elizabeth Reever. I am Whitney's great
granddaughter, I have been overly blessed to have been able to have her be apart of my life as long as she has. Whitney lived to be
95 years old, but who would have thought that the sparkling, cheerful, lively woman would have been the age she was? Whitney was
born on February 9th, 2001, she died on November 20th, 2096. She had two brothers, Wesley and William. Even though they
seemed not to, they did love each other greatly and would do anything for one another. Being the only girl, Whitney was always
protected so to say, but she would never admit that. She told me a story of when she and her brothers were outside doing chores and
Whitney and Will were on the gator driving around. They were supposed to be picking raspberries, but it was not getting done.
Wesley was trying to get them to come help him pick the berries so he was chasing them behind the gator. Will took a sharp turn
around the bushes and Whitney flew off the gator breaking her arm. She grew up with brothers teasing her and never missing an
opportunity to pick on her. Whitney attended Glidden–Ralston Community school for her entire schooling. She loved that school
more than you could imagine. She always told me that she wished I had gotten the chance to go to such a spirited and prided school
before it had closed down. Her friends always said that she was the loud one in the stands or the

The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one

Mark Twain Satire
Mark Twain a man with a man with a brilliant imagination as well as ways of resisting information that made it both interesting as
well as humorous. Twain was so well known for his comic relief in the retelling of stories Twain would literally charge people for
him to give them a lecture on a far fetched place/location he visited and believe it or not they would await eagerly for it! Twain had a
great business strategy behind what he was doing; he would go upon an adventure, return, have a lecture on the place he explored,
and in doing so he would have enough money to afford another adventure! Twain would often lecture about his adventure to places,
such as the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii), Egypt and the Holy Land. But in Twain's time he wasn't just a storyteller but he was
also an author who wrote 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court', about a boy who travels back to the time of King Arthur.
During the story Twain makes fun of those who have earned privileges through their birth rights rather than truly giving them for
themselves. Twain also wrote a book called 'The Gilded Age" glidden of course meaning gold, the book ... Show more content on

But here's the kicker, Mark Twain isn't even his actual name. In his everyday life he went by Samuel Langhorne Clemens (his birth
name) but he instead developed his own pen name, this being mark twain. "Mark Twain" is a riverboat term measuring two fathoms
(12 feet) in depth: mark (measure) twain (two). Ironically this term if it was called out it meant that the water was safe for the
riverboats of the day to cross. His pen name probably derived from the time he worked on a river boat. He worked on a crew as an
apprentice in April of 1857 up until the time the civil war broke out. During Twain's writing career he released a total of 28 separate
books as well as many collections of short stories, all were to be branded under the name "Mark

Maxim's invention expanded on the hand–powered Gatlin gun and was soon able to fire over 600 rounds per minute (Levy 114).
After the First World War erupted the machine gun was not immediately adopted by all countries in the war. During the early parts
of World War I battlefield tactics were similar to those used by Napoleon. This military style of battlefield strategy focused on the
infantry moving forward as a group to raid and attack. The military leaders were not certain how useful the machine gun would be
on the battlefield because during the early stages of the war the machine gun and the ammunition were very heavy. It took four to six
people to operate the overly awkward machine during the early years of World War I. A rifle and a pistol were much more effective
in the traditional battlefield approach. Hiram Maxim introduced his invention to the British Army prior to start of the First World
War. The British rejected the machine gun because they believed that it was an improper form of warfare. However the German
Army began modifying and improve Maxim's invention in an effort to gain an advantage on the battlefield. The German version of
the machine gun was called the "Maschinengewehr 08." It is estimated that the Germans had over 12,000 machine guns at the
beginning of the war and British had only a few hundred (Duffy 2). Though advancements of the machine gun created a weapon

Westward Expansion Research Paper
The Westward expansion was mainly driven by America's desire to control not only more land but to expand its territory up to the
Pacific Coast. With the country once divided by certain beliefs and political views were now united with the Manifest Destiny to
come together and expand westward to find new opportunities, resources, and profit. "To encourage the settlement of the West,
Congress passed legislation that enabled settlers to buy land cheaply, and have easy access to land with mineral deposits and grazing
lands" (Credo 1). This Westward expansion was very important to American's economy because it was the largest expansion in US
history, successfully connecting railways from East to West, and discovery of important resources. The Westward expansion is still
considered by historians to not only be the most important expansion of the United States but also the most venturous. This
expansion was a combination of trade, military force, and discovery over a period hundred years. By the 1900s the United States
more than tripled their size from less than one million square miles to three millions square miles. The west saw 60% population

The American Dream By James Madison
Parth Patel Honors English III 2nd Hour 4/27/16 James Madison stated "That part of America which had encouraged them most had
advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the art." This means that if our American goal is to do something, we will not
only do that task, we will be the best in the world at it. Also we went out west because we were encouraged to go west, not that we
had to.This represents the path we took to settle the west. We went out west first to get the gold and then we would build railroad
and then cities would emerge. The American dream is always changing for different people in different times. The American dream
during this time period was to get control of all the land out west and unite it. We would be settling the west for many years but it
shows our American Dream in settling the west was to make the west advanced as the east. People who moved and settled western
lands were motivated to do so for the many reasons. Many people believed that you go west to get a new and better life. The west
was filled with opportunities like the abundance of land. This land was sold cheap to farmers who would take care for it and a
positive was that no one farmed and used up all the nutrients in the soil. There was also opportunities to hunt for buffalo and make
money by selling the hide and meat. With the demand on meat in the growing eastern cities, people also moved west to raise cattle.
With the declining rates of the buffalo it would free up

Early American Agriculture Dbq Essay
As the population of the young United States increased more and more people hungry mouths were asking for food. Farmers had to
keep up with new technology but there were also many setbacks in government policy and economic conditions. In the period of
1865–1900, there were many ways in which technology, government policy, and economic conditions changed early American
agriculture.
From 1870 to 1890 railroads were more widely spreading through the west and everywhere else. This should effectively decrease
the price for farmers to get his crops to market. However, this gives the many different railroad companies the opportunity to spike
up prices. This got so bad in some states that government policy was written to protect the farmers. ... Show more content on

In 1892 Mary E. Lease talks about the low prices in farming and how politicians mislead them and tell them decreasing prices are

would drive down prices. Document H talks about the unpredictability of farming and how this can affect prices of the product. And

During the summer of 1915, the British became despondent about the stalemate in the trenches. The development of a vehicle that
could withstand bullets and cross over trenches became their priority. After a year of development, the Mark I tank was introduced.
The tank was quickly produced and was used during the Battle of the Somme (Debut of the Tank). The tank came into use and

however it severely maimed them. Mustard gas caused large blisters on contact and blindness. Phosgene worked very similarly to

Nitroglycerine Benefits
While the Civil War was a horrid act, it turns out it had some benefits. For example, after it ended, new markets sprouted from the
materials used in the war, which allowed factories to be the most productive than ever before. But amidst all the productions, many
inventions were either already being created or were on the verge of being finished. One of the most important developments was
the Transcontinental Railroad, created in the last third of the nineteenth century because it was a development that led to much
improvement and evolution in the world. But also, other important developments such as nitroglycerine, which greatly contributed
in helping the TC Railroad work, and barbed wire, which also helped later in history. Nitroglycerine is a dense, oily liquid explosive
that contributed greatly in making the Transcontinental Railroad by effectively making a path through the Sierra Nevada. According

In the Great Plains, there was a startling lack of wood to use as building supplies. The farmers on the plains found solutions for
many of the problems that they encountered due to the lack of building supplies like building their houses from mud and burning dry
grass as fuel for their fires but one problem still remained. They were unable to build fences for their livestock. But in 1873 a farmer
named Joseph Glidden created type of fence with points affixed to twisted strands of wire which then became known as barbed wire.
This new type of fence could span for miles with a low number of wooden posts in between. The barbs on the wire deterred the
farmer's livestock from trying to get free and it also deterred unwanted predators from trying to get in. This was one of the most
important inventions for farmers at this time it outlined their homestead and their property and prevented their valuable livestock
from roaming. Barb wire became known as "The Wire That Fenced the West" and it became a true necessity for farmers in the Great

My Dorm Room With Style
Let 's face it–dorm rooms can be depressing. Many of them are small, cramped, and devoid of any style or life. And since you only
live in them for nine months before moving on, it can feel pointless to spend any real time decorating your space. While dorms have
all sorts of restrictions that prevent you from going wild with your décor, it is possible to decorate your dorm room with style that
goes beyond a few random posters on the wall. Follow these simple tips and ideas to infuse your dorm room with style and enjoy
your school year. Choose a Color Palette In college, it 's easy to decorate your dorm room as you go, collecting an array of pieces
that don 't really add up to much of anything. To give your dorm room a cohesive look, choose a color palette that you love and use
it as a guide when choosing accessories. If you don 't have a favorite hue, think of your favorite places or moods. Deep blues and
greens can invoke the sea and promote calm, while reds and oranges invite a spicy flair that can awake and excite you. Don 't go
overboard in your color scheme, however, or you may start to feel closed in rather than enjoy it. Organize your dorm room around
one or two main colors and accessorize in smaller ways with accent colors. Key pieces in your dorm room you can decorate are the
bedding, desk chair, lamp, clock, or even some accessory pieces on a desk or shelf. Be sure to inject splashes of a complimentary
color within the room to keep it from feeling too one–note.

Homelessness Is An Arising Problem Within The United States
Homelessness in America
SOC331: Social Justice and Ethics
Professor Ashraf Esmail
Rebecca McRunnel
March 8, 2015
Homelessness is an arising problem within the United States. Poverty and homelessness are inheritably linked. As children we were
raised to believe that through hard work and determination that we could accomplish anything. We all had dreams of having nice
cars, a nice home and lots of money, however this is impossible when a person is living pay check to pay check and close to being
homeless. Knowing that we live in the "land of opportunity" brings many dreams to anyone's mind, however, many families are
experiencing financial issues that are causing them to become homeless because they cannot afford to live and pay their bills, food,
child care, health care and education (National Coalition of the homeless, 2007). Homelessness in America is persistent, complex
and widely–occurring problem that incorporates many economic, social and psychological dimensions (National Coalition of the
homeless, 2007). With the shortage of affordable rental property is causing the increasing number of poverty families. Homelessness
doesn't only affect an adult but it does affect many children. In America, 3.5 million Americans are homeless each year. However, of
these Americans that are homeless children make up more than 1 million people who are homeless (Home Aid America , n.d.). With
children and many families that are homeless, veterans, and domestic

Lavon Julian

  • 1. Lavon Julian Dr. Percy Lavon Julian was a spearheading chemist whose findings enhanced the field of science and saved many lives. A grandson of a slave, Julian grew up facing a lot of obstacles because of his skin color (Drew, 1950). African Americans during his time faced a lot of challenges like racism. Julian rose above this racism and turned out to be among the most influential scientists of the 20th century and a leader of civil and business rights. Percy Lavon Julian was born in the year1989. Julian was lucky as his parents were educated and had an appreciation for education which was not the case for most black Americans. Although his parents had a great appreciation for education, Julian attended a segregated elementary school. There was no public high school for black individuals like Lavon. Hence, he had no option but to enroll in a teacher training school for blacks (Drew, 1950). In 1916, Julian enrolled at DePauw University having a tenth–grade education barely. On his first day in college, Julian remembers being welcomed and greeted by a white man. He had never experienced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One most famous paper was entitled "Studies in the Indole Series V. The Complete Synthesis of Physostigmine". In the paper, Julian and Josef explained how physostigmine is synthesized in the laboratory (Cobb, 1971). This article is what I think was the most influential publication, Julian ever wrote. Julian's other contribution to plant science was when he was working as a director in Glidden company. Following his successful research, there was an explosive growth industry for soya beans (Cobb, 1971). He discovered new functions for the chemicals found in soya beans. This discovery lessened problems in the world. For example, one protein called Aer–o–form was used as fire– retardant foam in fire extinguishers. The development helped to save lives of soldiers during World War ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Sholes And Glidden Typewriter And The Second... The Gilded Age, or commonly known as the Second Industrial Revolution, lived up to its extravagant name that Mark Twain had given to the era. Inventions such as the telephone escalated communication among people despite the distance, and the creation of the automobile helped everyone to move from one place to another in a much shorter time. Besides these well–known and influential inventions, the Sholes and Glidden typewriter also contributed to the economic, industrial, and societal growth of the American citizens in a subtle yet impactful way. Despite its old age, the typewriter still has a grand, yet not very obvious, influence on a popular, modern day invention. Prior to the creation of this typewriter, there were mainly two methods to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Sholes and Glidden typewriter had numerous abilities solved many problems that contributed to the growth of the industry. Based on the article "Sholes & Glidden 'Type Writer' A Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark" by American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Christopher Sholes and Carlos Glidden, with some help from a clock–builder Matthias Schwalbach, James Densmore who provided financing with the development, a fellow inventor Samuel Soulé, and many others, had created the sophisticated machine. After numerous refinements over seven years, the Sholes and Glidden typewriter adopted "a non– alphabetical arrangement for the keys, resulting in the QWERTY layout." By spreading out the most commonly used letters such as the vowels, the typists could type much faster than before. On a poster provided by the article "Type–Writer: two words, hyphenated" by Mark Adams, the advertisement poster claimed that the Sholes and Glidden typewriter could type up to sixty to one hundred words per minute, which was five times much faster than an expert penmen. Not only did the typewriter increased typewriting speed, the QWERTY key arrangement also solved the jamming problem that previous typewriter caused. According to the article "The Sholes & Glidden Type Writer, with the First QWERTY Keyboard" by Jeremy Norman, the typists in that time period used a technique called "hunt and peck," a technique where typists would ... • 5. Christopher Sholes and the Typewriter Christopher Sholes and the Typewriter A revolution is a change or replacement of society or government. A revolution is mainly heard of when a change in government occurred or in a war like the American Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was a time of change through technology. During the Second Industrial Revolution, new inventions were created to change the way of life. The light bulb was created and the factory business was revived. The telephone was created and news was spread faster than it ever had. Airplanes and trains were created and the transportation business was renewed. Although Christopher Shole's typewriter was not an original idea, his typewriter revolutionized the place of women in the workplace. Christopher Sholes was born on February 14, 1819 in Mooresburg, Pennsylvania. As a child, his family moved to Danville where he grew up. In Danville, he became an apprentice printer for the Danville newspaper. Once he moved to Wisconsin, he joined the staff of the Wisconsin Territory's legislative newspaper and then he became editor of the Wisconsin Inquirer in Madison. In 1841, he moved to Southport to start the Southport Telegraph with Michael Frank. Then he moved to Milwaukee and became editor of the Milwaukee Sentinel. In 1861, President Lincoln appointed him customs collector for the port of Milwaukee. Since Sholes was always busy with his newspaper positions, he had little time to invent. However, mining requires a trade cost in order to get reliable energy resource, as coal mining influences and infatuated the environment around it. In particular, surface mines, also known as strip mines, is a practice mining commonly used to access coal by removing layers of overlying soil and rock. Additionally, strip mining requires heavy used of machines, such as bulldozers, power shovels, and trucks in order to extract the resources from the ground. Surface mining is arguably the most effective type of mining, as 60 percent of the world's materialistic coal comes from the practice of this type of mining. Thus tactics of surface mining at such fast and furious pace is in not an efficient method for gathering resources, and will result in pollution and negligent on the land, forests and soil, and water that environment provides naturally. • 17. Emma Eulogy Speech I'm sure most of you know who I am, and I feel very honored that I was asked to speak on her behalf. Emma and I have been friends for a very long time and I thought I would start by telling the story of Emma's life. She was born on April 3, 2001, here in Carroll. In her younger years she was temperamental, and had some great stories to prove it. She screamed like she was getting murdered because her mother wouldn't buy her a baby doll. She cried for a five hour car ride because she received the wrong kind of hash browns. I think all these moments just made her family love her more and set the level of her sassiness for her future. As she grew up her sassiness never went away. In high school she was just as sassy as she was when she was born, and at her work she was even called the sass master. She kept her sass through college and until the day she died. It was one of my favorite qualities of hers. Besides being sassy she was a natural born leader. Her coaches and teachers would tell her so. When she was in high school she was a part of student council and at her college she was a part of the student government. After college she took a job at her old high school, Glidden–Ralston. While she was working there she met her husband Liam Roberts. They dated for several years before he proposed. I remember their proposal. Liam had asked me to help him with it because he never wanted Emma to forget it. Emma loved goats, like LOVED them. So I told him that he needed to ask her with ... • 19. Why Is World War One Important As it is called world war one was the first war that had the world involved. It all started when a terrorist shot and killed the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, that then started the long list of wars being declared upon as basically everyone started declaring war on each other. The war was very experimental as tons of new weapons were used. The main three weapons that played a major part of the war were the protection of barbed wire, the extremely deadly machine gun and the terrible toxic gas. Theses weapons were a big part of the war as they not only caused most of the deaths but also changed the complexion of war. In 1884 Sir Hiram Maxim invented one of the most used and deadly weapons ever created, the machine gun. The machine gun was the first rapid fire gun that could fire a long distance and kill with eas. Of course now it has been revamped now it shoot even faster and accurate but in world war 1 this gun gave a massive advantage to anyone who had one. Originally it was invented to keep cattle in a certain area. But in world war 1 Barbed wire was used as tool to keep out enemies from the areas. The reasons why barbed wire was very impactful in the war was because it would tear through clothes and skin leaving the victim's body exposed to virus and infections and while if you be careful and don't get cut by the wire it would take you awhile to get through leaving plenty of time for a sniper to pick you off. Also this deadly wire was used to corral the enemies into one spot only to be blasted by artillery. He was quite intelligent, educated, and hard– working, and helpful chemist. He was the first black chemist elected to the National Academy of the Sciences. This is one of the reasons I strongly believe he deserves a United States postage stamp. Julian never had a chance at a completely normal education but he became a very smart individual. • 25. Sociology Imagination Sociologists differ in their understanding of the concept, but the range suggests several important commonalities. Mills defined sociological imagination as "the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society." The sociological imagination is the capacity to shift from one perspective to another: from the political to the psychological; from examination of a single family to comparative assessment of the national budgets of the world; from the theological school to the military establishment; from considerations of an oil industry to studies of contemporary poetry.[1] Sociological Imagination: The application of imaginative thought to the asking and answering of sociological questions. Those who teach courses in social problems report using films to teach about war, to aid students in adopting a global perspective and to confront issues of race relations. There are benefits of using film as part of a multimedia approach to teaching courses in popular culture. It also provides students of medical sociology with case studies for hands–on observational experiences. It acknowledges the value of films as historical documentation of changes in cultural ideas, materials, and institutions. Feature films are used in introductory sociology courses to demonstrate the current relevance of sociological thinking and to show how the sociological imagination helps us make sense of our social world. Life Is Better Now Than In The 1900's Jeremy Crafton Mr. Parrott English 3 9 Feb 2015 Why Life Is Better Now Than In The 1900's The reason that life is better now than it was in the 1900's is because there are so many new advancements in medicine, new technology, and the human lifespan is much longer than it ever has been. In the 1900's, there were not many advances for medicine. Within the first ten years of the 1900's, the discovery of different blood types and a cure for sleeping sickness was discovered. In 2013, doctors and scientists were able to grow a kidney in the U.S, and in Japan, scientists and doctors grew the first human liver. The life expectancy of males in the early 1900's, 1900 – 1910, range from the age of forty six and forty eight. For females in the same time frame, the life expectancy ranged from the age of forty eight to fifty one. Now in the 2000's, 2000 – 2010, the life expectancy of a male is anywhere from seventy four to seventy six. For females in the same time frame, the life expectancy ranged from seventy nine to eighty one. The life expectancy for both males and females from the early 1900's to the early 2000's has nearly doubled. A lot of these technological devices were seen with hopes to possibly make life easier for both personal and work life, which sounds great for employers (Palmiere). With so much technology around and with a generation of tech savvy people he question arises of whether or not people have become less productive in the workforce. It has been stated that by companies giving and allowing their employees access to many different types of technology while on the clock they are basically giving permission to their employees to lose focus. It is believed that when employees are accessing all these many different form of technology, they are more likely to make mistakes because they are trying to multitask and stay connected with their social lives while working. It can be seen as information overload when employees are constantly connected because when they are always multitasking and connected with all other things at home and at work, they are never really focused on one thing at a given time or give their all to a project so they are more prone to make mistakes and not show adequate attention to the project. Information overload is not something that employers want inside of the workplace because it hinders the employees' ability to do their job effectively and efficiently. When information overload is occurring employees take a longer time trying to process the information that is being given to them, which means that company time is being wasted. When they are presented with more than one thing at a time they have to compartmentalize them and arrange them in order of most important to least important. However, some people out West found it to be an impediment to moving across wide plains. Cowboys and Native Americans even came up with a new name for it, Devil's Rope. Joseph Farwell Glidden was a very influential man in the creation of barbed wire and he forever changed the West and the World. Barbed wire helped reform the West, but it had to start somewhere. Joseph Glidden saw a wire attachment at the DeKalb County Fair presented by Henry M. Rose. He used a wood rail and hammered nails into it to hook onto a fence. Joseph Glidden was there with Jacob Haish, and Isaac Ellwood. They each saw this and began to talk to Henry about it. Joseph ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His wife also said that Glidden had a better design than he did, which is part of the reason he partnered with Glidden. Haish was a fierce contender, and he went to court to see who got the patent, but Glidden eventually won. Joseph Glidden had patents already, so when he saw the barbed wire, he thought that he could make that, so he did. He was a very creative man and he was intelligent too. Before he invented barbed wire he invented something called the land roller. It had the wheels placed in special alignment so that the wheels did not go over the same land twice. Barbed wire was needed out West, and Glidden's barbed wire was easy to transport so it went West. The wire migrated West because Texas Longhorn Cattle would trample and graze on farmer's crops and the farmers hated it. Cattle would also get run over by trains because they would cross in front of a train on the newly built Transcontinental Railroad. Barbed was put up to line the railways for miles at a time. First, since 60% ($80 million) of Janmar's architectural coatings products were sold in DFW area, the company should distribute more of its products to that area in order to maximize sales. Regarding the non–DFW area, the majority (90%) of that area deals with "do–it–yourself" method to paint their houses or rooms, and usually the decision effected by the price of the product. Therefore, Janmar has two options for the non–DFW area, either to cut the prices of their products, or to develop a new lower quality category that has the same brand name but cheaper than the premium category. The competition in Architectural coating segment are increasing. Companies seeking growth and a higher sales base to support increasing costs are making acquisition. I am Whitney's great granddaughter, I have been overly blessed to have been able to have her be apart of my life as long as she has. Whitney lived to be 95 years old, but who would have thought that the sparkling, cheerful, lively woman would have been the age she was? Whitney was born on February 9th, 2001, she died on November 20th, 2096. She had two brothers, Wesley and William. Even though they seemed not to, they did love each other greatly and would do anything for one another. Being the only girl, Whitney was always protected so to say, but she would never admit that. She told me a story of when she and her brothers were outside doing chores and Whitney and Will were on the gator driving around. They were supposed to be picking raspberries, but it was not getting done. Wesley was trying to get them to come help him pick the berries so he was chasing them behind the gator. Will took a sharp turn around the bushes and Whitney flew off the gator breaking her arm. She grew up with brothers teasing her and never missing an opportunity to pick on her. Whitney attended Glidden–Ralston Community school for her entire schooling. She loved that school more than you could imagine. Twain was so well known for his comic relief in the retelling of stories Twain would literally charge people for him to give them a lecture on a far fetched place/location he visited and believe it or not they would await eagerly for it! Twain had a great business strategy behind what he was doing; he would go upon an adventure, return, have a lecture on the place he explored, and in doing so he would have enough money to afford another adventure! Twain would often lecture about his adventure to places, such as the Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii), Egypt and the Holy Land. But in Twain's time he wasn't just a storyteller but he was also an author who wrote 'A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court', about a boy who travels back to the time of King Arthur. Maxim's invention expanded on the hand–powered Gatlin gun and was soon able to fire over 600 rounds per minute (Levy 114). After the First World War erupted the machine gun was not immediately adopted by all countries in the war. During the early parts of World War I battlefield tactics were similar to those used by Napoleon. This military style of battlefield strategy focused on the infantry moving forward as a group to raid and attack. The military leaders were not certain how useful the machine gun would be on the battlefield because during the early stages of the war the machine gun and the ammunition were very heavy. It took four to six people to operate the overly awkward machine during the early years of World War I. A rifle and a pistol were much more effective in the traditional battlefield approach. Hiram Maxim introduced his invention to the British Army prior to start of the First World War. The British rejected the machine gun because they believed that it was an improper form of warfare. However the German Army began modifying and improve Maxim's invention in an effort to gain an advantage on the battlefield. The German version of the machine gun was called the "Maschinengewehr 08." With the country once divided by certain beliefs and political views were now united with the Manifest Destiny to come together and expand westward to find new opportunities, resources, and profit. "To encourage the settlement of the West, Congress passed legislation that enabled settlers to buy land cheaply, and have easy access to land with mineral deposits and grazing lands" (Credo 1). This Westward expansion was very important to American's economy because it was the largest expansion in US history, successfully connecting railways from East to West, and discovery of important resources. The Westward expansion is still considered by historians to not only be the most important expansion of the United States but also the most venturous. This expansion was a combination of trade, military force, and discovery over a period hundred years. • 59. The American Dream By James Madison Parth Patel Honors English III 2nd Hour 4/27/16 James Madison stated "That part of America which had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the art." This means that if our American goal is to do something, we will not only do that task, we will be the best in the world at it. Also we went out west because we were encouraged to go west, not that we had to.This represents the path we took to settle the west. We went out west first to get the gold and then we would build railroad and then cities would emerge. The American dream is always changing for different people in different times. The American dream during this time period was to get control of all the land out west and unite it. We would be settling the west for many years but it shows our American Dream in settling the west was to make the west advanced as the east. Arthur Guy Empey said, "There's a sort of greenish, yellow cloud rolling along the ground out in front, it's coming –––" "German gas is heavier than air and soon fills the trenches and dugouts." "Out of our crew of six, we lost two killed and two wounded." (Empey) Other gasses like mustard gas and phosgene were used. Mustard gas was not used to kill people however it severely maimed them. Mustard gas caused large blisters on contact and blindness. Phosgene worked very similarly to chlorine gas, however, it was invisible allowing it to remain undetected (CDC). If you don 't have a favorite hue, think of your favorite places or moods. Deep blues and greens can invoke the sea and promote calm, while reds and oranges invite a spicy flair that can awake and excite you. Don 't go overboard in your color scheme, however, or you may start to feel closed in rather than enjoy it. Organize your dorm room around one or two main colors and accessorize in smaller ways with accent colors. Key pieces in your dorm room you can decorate are the bedding, desk chair, lamp, clock, or even some accessory pieces on a desk or shelf. Be sure to inject splashes of a complimentary color within the room to keep it from feeling too one–note. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
