Riots of 1863, and colored and rich people weren t safe from the protests that the poor and
working class had against the highly controversial draft (Bernstein 34). These violent riots had to
be stopped, and someone had to come up with an idea to put the crowds at rest. The New York City
Draft Riots of 1863 were stopped when the Union government decided to compromise by stopping
the draft and not receiving more troops for the civil war.
The Draft Riots began on July 13 of 1863 and lasted for five days (Amato and Meisel). The civil

skyrocketing like never before and the brave soldiers were heading home. Slavery also seemed to

The Literary Canon How did the Black Arts Movement change the white supremacist of the
Literary Canon? Before one can go on to answer this question, students must understand exactly
what a literary canon is. Literary canon is a term used widely to refer to a group of literary works
that are considered the most important of a particular time period or place. Before the 1960 s the
canon was widely referred to as the Western Canon. However after the Black Arts Movement
several African Americans authors emerged adding diversity and ideas from the point of view of

The discourse of hegemonic masculinity was recently explored to understand the power of men in
society (Connell Messerschmidt, 2005). For centuries, men have taken a dominant gender role in
society. This has resulted in the oppression of women and the subordination of men who do not
confine to the masculine norms (Connell Messerschmidt, 2005). This essay explores the discourse
of hegemonic masculinity by explaining how it is reflected throughout society, and how it is
connected to femininity and other masculinities. The aim is to criticise hegemonic masculinity by

To understand the concrete basis of hegemonic masculinity more easily, the terms hegemonic and

resistance, which is a term for describing a range of methods to deal with conflict without the use of
violence. Individuals such as the Liberian women and Mohandas Gandhi claim that nonviolent
resistance is justified through acts of harmonious protests and more likely to produce peaceful and
constructive outcomes. Harmonious protests justify the concept of nonviolent opposition because it
