Review Of Pipilotti Rist s Pepperminta
0:10:04 0:02:04 On its surface, Pipilotti Rist s Pepperminta depicts a free spirited woman who
liberates the members of her community with the power of ecstatic imagination; however, a more
esoteric interpretation points to a film that is first and foremost a depiction of the psychedelic
experience. Though the entire collection of evidence supporting this theory is beyond the scope of this
analysis, there is ample evidence within one short sequence to substantiate the premise. The film
stands out in its use of color, cinematography, and editing to create an imaginative world in which the
characters are free to play. The same techniques also overtly resemble the effects of psychedelic
substances such as lysergic diethylamide (LSD/Acid) and psilocybin mushrooms. In addition, the
narrative, script, and mis en scene contain clues that may go unnoticed to non drug users, but that
certainly point to hallucinogenic substances. Firstly, let us use the effects of psilocybin mushrooms to
characterize the psychedelic experience. These effects include but are not limited to: Euphoria,
philosophical thinking, intense feelings of wonder, starring and rainbow patterns, colors brighten or
alter, visual hallucinations, sensation of energy within body, and feelings of connection with the
universe. Each of these are displayed by Pepperminta by a combination of cinematography and post
production editing and after effects. The sequence begins with the titular character pinwheeling

The Tulsa Race Riot Of 1921
The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 was the culmination of racial tensions both endemic in American society
as a whole in the period, and certain tensions peculiar to Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1921, Greenwood and
its African American population became the outlet for these often violent tensions seething among
Tulsa s white population. The following paper seeks to shed some further understanding on what
motivated and pushed the whites of Tulsa, Oklahoma to such a violent, extreme reaction during the
riot.
To answer the question, Why were the whites so mean? it is necessary to understand the pre existing
conditions that existed in Tulsa, Oklahoma before the actual riot took place in 1921.
Pre existing racism in Tulsa was the foundation on which all the other causes of the riot were built
upon. Wide spread segregation was still common in America at that time and it was accepted by many
in the North and South that whites were inherently superior to blacks. These views were particularly
strong in the South, where emancipated blacks were seen as a threat and scourge to white Southern
culture, a culture which was utterly dominated by whites and where blacks were oppressed with no
hope of equal protection under the law, equal representation, etc. This was also the case in Tulsa in the
early 1900s. Blacks were segregated against by the white residents and as a consequence formed their
own community, called Greenwood, on the north side of the Frisco Railroad tracks, which was
heralded by

Hollywood Movies 1930-1950
During the time of 1930 1950 there had been a lot of change with the Hollywood movies that had been
made. As the U.S slowly shifted into the great depression as the 30s came around, it had affected the
Hollywood film industry through economic crisis putting the movies into low budgeting films. But as
the great depression seemed to be a major crisis for those living in the U.S another crisis soon
followed as the great depression had ended, and that so happened World War II. When the U.S
officially entered the war the whole Hollywood film industry changed drastically. Some of the usage
from the film industry had been the type of propaganda used from it whether it had been formal or
informal as well as official or unofficial. Many of the movies ... Show more content on

From the time that war was beginning many films were intended to help those joining the military by
learning things such as military training vehicles. These movies weren t just show to those in the
military, but also to civilian audiences in movie theaters across the United States. In 1940 and 1941
Hollywood filmmakers were becoming more aggressive and began producing films which could be
categorized as war preparedness pictures. Such films attempted to portray military ventures against the
Axis as proper and in the best interest of the United States (Slapstick Contributions to WWII
Propaganda p.37). Certain movies that had come out during these years had been the You Nazty Spy.
Slapstick team from another film known as The Three Stooges had been apart of You Nazty Spy
which purpose was to prepare the American public for war by glorifying life in the military and
stirring patriotic sentiment. The Stooges offering was the first film to satirize Hitler and Nazism, and

Psychological Torture and the Fairness of Poverty in “The...
Psychological Torture and the Fairness of Poverty The Lesson , by Toni Cade Bambara, is a first
person narration of a young girl named Sylvia who through the teachings of Miss Moore learns about
the socioeconomic gap between the wealthy and poor. White Torture , by Farnoosh Moshiri, is a short
story told in third person of a woman enduring the psychological pain of torture which results in the
audience questioning the morality of the subject at hand. While both stories differ greatly in tone and
theme, they both demonstrate the potential of short stories when utilized properly. Bambara s use of
Sylvia as the protagonist of the narrative gives the story a somewhat playful tone while tackling a
subject that is far from it. While in the taxi Sylvia thinks to herself, So we heading down the street and
she s boring us silly about what things cost and what our parents make and how much goes for rent
and how money ain t divided up right in this country (Bambara 1143). This quote shows that by using
Sylvia s first person take with the story, Bambara gives us a humorous approach of a child that must
slowly come to the terms with the reality of wealth in the country. Moshiri s story White Torture, goes
with a third person approach when telling her story. The woman who is the focal point of the story is
never named and we only get glimpse of her history based on short flashbacks. The only real concrete
information the audience is given is that she is in a holding facility

Failure Of Protect Laws And Their Harmful Effects On...
Failure to Protect Laws and their Harmful Effects on Abused Mothers Violence against women has
been, and continues to be, a problem in the United States. Domestic violence especially is a large part
of today s society. It accounts for 21% of all violent crime (Truman Morgan, 2014), and one in three
women have experienced physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner in their lifetime
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). Three women lose their lives to domestic
violence every day (Lee, 2015). While domestic violence also affects many men, the prevalence of
female victims is much higher. It is not anywhere near a novel problem in society, yet it is not even
close to being solved. Steps have been made, though, to aid women in their escape from these
unhealthy relationships. There are multiple hotlines at national and local levels, where woman can call
in anonymously and report the violence they are experiencing or those close to victims can report
violence they suspect or know to be happening. There are safe houses and shelters all over the country
that will take women and children in if and when they finally do get out. There are several national
organizations, such as the Family Violence Prevention Fund, the National Coalition Against Domestic
Violence, and the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, that are dedicated to raising
awareness and ending domestic abuse. Legislation has even been enacted to create harsher

Due to their size, children are least able to withstand physical assault and control by adults. The
paramountcy in finding this site is that it is second only to the body recuperation site in yielding
physical evidence, which links the suspect to the victim. Furthermore, children, woefully, are in
jeopardy of abduction and sex cognate murder due to the menace of the pedophile predators in our
society. Child abduction cases affect not only the immediate family of the victim, but entire
communities and our society as a whole as media coverage of the event is nationally broadcast. The
Amber Alert plan, which has recently been adopted nationwide, is a direct result of the concern and
public replication engendered by these high profile cases along with the entelechy that law
enforcement alone cannot adequately deal with the potential threat posed by the child abductor.

Comparing Roosevelt s Court Packing
Contrasting Roosevelt s first term, in his second term as president few legislations was passed with the
second part of his new deal. The additional of the Housing Act of 1937 , a reconfigured version of the
Agricultural Adjustment Act12 and the Fair Labor Standards Act12 were added to benefit to the
working class as it did in his previous term. The inclusion of the Work Progress Administration would
again expand the government spending with an addition of 5 billion dollars to construct serval public
park. What will be the most controversial issue in Roosevelt s services as president is the overreaching
of the executive power with the proposal of the Judicial Procedure Reform Bill of 1937 , or Court

Perhaps what have change the court mind was the enacting of Court Packing into the legislative as a

Long, State Senate of Louisiana form 1932 1935, who unveiled his Share Our Wealth plan. His
thought on Roosevelt was that the New Deal did not adequately help citizens living in poverty.
Another major threat to FDR came from the National Union for Social Justice, led by Father Charles
E. Coughlin , a former supporter of the New Deal. Using the same method of hosting a radio show,
Coughlin deem the New Deal as not being radical enough and push for the absolute federal control of
the country s economic system. Nevertheless, the both his first term and second term of his presidency

Timothy Tebow Reflection
Now, Timothy Tebow isn t a regular author, instead of telling non fiction stories, he worked to write
inspiring messages that uplifted the people around him ( Through). After he found direction in his life
again, he became so excited that he couldn t keep this wisdom to himself. So how did he let the world
know to never give up? In 2011 he released his first book titled Through My Eyes ( Through). It
would be in this book where Tebow would discuss everything about his life in a very unique way. In
Through My Eyes, Tebow would discuss everything about his life up to that point, but that is not the
main purpose of this story ( Through). It s within this autobiography that he would discuss: religion,
not giving up on life, how everyone is worth more than they think, and to not give up on oneself when
everyone else has ( Through). Tebow would use his awesome literary skills to uplift and inspire
everyone around him, rather than just telling a simple story that not everyone may care about (
Through). It is in this manner that Tim Tebow can gain a following where he can spread the good
word of Jesus Christ and to let everyone know that they are not alone in this world. In 2012, Tim
Tebow was dropped by the Jets and that was pretty much the end of his football career. For the next
four years, Tebow would go on to do missionary work to spread the word about his Lord and Savior.
Along with this, he would also make appearances on ESPN to do guest broadcasts and such.

Southwest CEO Gary Kelly, ....if it would start charging for baggage, it will lose more revenue than it

maintaining their brand value as affordable airlines which clearly identifies them as distinct to their
competitors. This low cost and bag fly free strategy are very effective in terms of profit and customer

Southwest Airlines is continuously improving and has been consistent and successful in the economy.
Even though Southwest Airlines have been through many economic downturns, how can they remain
stable in the economy? In my opinion, the key element of Southwest Airlines success is the utilization
of economic indicators, the leading, coincident and lagging economic indexes which is valuable to
help them understand the performance if the company will be on peak or trough in the business cycle.
Transportation Service Index and EIA Crude Oil Prices are two specific indicators I chose because I
believe when Southwest utilize these two economic data then it will

Why Is Mungo Man Important
Mungo Man Kenan Bozkus Focus question Why is Mungo Man an important person in Australian and
Aboriginal history? Mungo man is one of the most important discoveries made in Australia which was
believed to have lived approximately 40 thousand years ago. His remains were discovered in New
South Wales Lake Mungo in 1972. The discovery of Mungo Man shows that the Indigenous
population in Australia has been around for over 40 thousand years. It shows the earliest evidence of
human existence in Australia. The body of Mungo Man was buried with ochre and his hands crossed
and this shows that these traditions were performed over 40 thousand years ago and passed down from
generation to generation. To put ochre on the body and have a burial symbolises that this tradition and
culture has been around for a long time and the evidence is a reminder of the history of the land and
the people. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

had arthritis throughout his body especially in his right elbow. I believe that Mungo Man s death was
very important to the tribe he was living in because he was found with ochre on him which shows
importance. I believe his death was also important because he was buried by his tribe with his arms

1.1 Explain how different methods of promoting products and/or services impact on customer service
delivery
Selling to consumers or other businesses, developing an effective sales strategy is the first step to
persuading customers to part with their money. In particular, we need to identify which customers to
focus the efforts on, the sales methods that will be use to reach them and how we will price the

It is essential to plan carefully how to approach and make the pitch to customers. Careful preparation
can help to demonstrate how the product will benefit the customer, handle any objections and close

complaints can be just as important.

Analysis Of The Episode Nosedive From The Netflix...
In the episode Nosedive, from the Netflix series Black Mirror, the main character, Lacie Pound, is
obsessed with achieving a higher social media status (Dir. Wright, 2016. Writers. Jones Schur). She is
on the higher side of the rating spectrum, yet she continues to aim higher. Lacie is always giving full
ratings to everyone regardless of their status but pays particular attention to those who have more
stars. The difference between giving high status individuals good ratings and mid range individuals is
the hopes that they return the favour. Trying to achieve too much too quickly will not result in good
ratings for anyone, including Lacie. Unlike those in the mid range, high rating elites will not always
return the five stars that were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She never lets her guard down when it comes to her social media ratings. To continue increasing her
ratings, she is adamant on socializing with high status people. By applying Erving Goffman s
impression management, it is evident that there are multiple ways that Lacie uses to avoid public
shaming and embarrassment. Goffman s concept shows different situations that can be avoidable as
long as people present themselves in a certain way. When an individual is in public, it is best to be
continuously updated with recent events. Once out of the loop, that can result in public embarrassment
because the knowledge that has been applied is outdated and cannot compete with the newer
information. When shame is brought, there can be actions to avoid them such as changing the subject
or in Lacie s situation, sending full ratings in hopes of avoiding embarrassment and to save face.
Shame is a very hard thing to accept and it can change a person s life drastically. It is the difference
between having the highest rating and hitting rock bottom. Achieving a higher status is easy, but being
stripped of your status is just as simple. Before going out in public, an update on knowledge can be
done to avoid embarrassment and it can also be a conversation starter showing how much attention is
being paid to someone. The person showing attention can feel a sense of success as a result of being
constantly updated on social media, while the

Xerox Vertical Structure
Xerox Services is a multi national company that currently operates several call centers which handle
the customer service calls for many other Fortune 500 companies. Founded in 1906, it currently
employs over 140,000 people and had over 21 million dollars in revenue for the 2013 fiscal year
(Xerox, 2014). With operations in over 180 countries, Xerox Services is one of the largest business
process outsourcing companies in the world. Structured into many different smaller entities based on
the industry it serves, the call center operations portion of this business is the backbone of Xerox s
services for the last 40 years (Chesbrough, Rosenbloom, 2002). Xerox currently operates several
hundred call centers that handle both incoming and outgoing customer service and sales calls for its
vast amount of clients.
This company is setup in a very large vertical structure that starts with the CEO and works its way
down to its front line agents and employees. All decisions are filtered from the top to the bottom and
all requested approvals must originate from below and make their way up the company hierarchy. This
type of structure relies heavily on middle management to execute directives and monitor their
frontline resources to ensure they are being productive. This reliance on a large pool of middle
managers to run day to day operations makes this type of structure very large in size as well as
expensive from a payroll perspective.

The Death Of A Costumed Adventurer
The death of a costumed adventurer often leads audiences to contemplate the significance of it. It is a
prevalent issue in which these characters appear to sacrifice their lives for the possibility of a greater
good. In Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons Watchmen, masked hero are subjected towards death due to
their actions and the actions of others. Whether it is the actions of a friend, stranger, or foe, the
untimely deaths of Rorschach, Nite Owl I, and The Comedian proves a costumed adventurer s death
leads to the loss of humanity. Walter Joseph Kovacs, or more commonly known as Rorschach, is a
costumed vigilante whose death plays a significant role in Watchmen. Rorschach is depicted as a
disturbed man who believes there is always a right and wrong, even if it means breaking the law to
bring a higher justice in the world. His belief deems prevalent by defying the Keene Act of 1977,
which outlawed any type of vigilantism by costumed adventurers, except for those who worked
exclusively under the United States government like Dr. Manhattan and The Comedian. By breaking
down the components of Rorschach s mask, there will be a deeper understanding of what the
mysterious Rorschach represents in Watchmen. Rorschach s viewpoint of the world is often
interpreted through his mask, which is black and white... [and is constantly] changing shape...but not

The temporal and spiritual stewardship, we all face is no different from the littlest toddler or the oldest

responsibility to this earth, and to our Heavenly father is to protect and better what we are given, that

Pros And Cons Of Single Transferable Voting System
Every three years the Australian Senate is reelected using the single transferable voting system. In this
system, voters rank the list of candidates by order of preference to fill spots in a multi member district.
Then a quota is set based on the number of votes cast and the number of Senate seats to fill. If any
candidate receives more votes than the quota, they receive a seat. Any surplus votes are then
transferred to second choice candidates to see if they reach the quota, and so on until all Senate seats
are filled. In reality, single transferable voting is not a perfect election system. Because it does not

Socialist Jews Confront The Pogroms Summary
Some thing that I found interesting in the reading Socialist Jews Confront the Pogroms was that the
Jewish intelligentsia would abandon their own people and disregard their struggles. Secondly, I found
it interesting that the Russian intelligentsia would ignore the pogroms and not do anything about them,
they even started supporting them. I found these two things to be interesting because it would be more
beneficial to the Russian Socialist to have more people in their revolution regardless of who they
were. This would also help further move their agenda along, which was to help the middle class,
which a majority of Jews were apart of as well. Some reasonings as to why the Pogroms had happened
could be that the Russian elites wanted to scapegoat the Jews in order to prevent the Socialist from
overthrowing the Russian government. By scapegoating the Jews the Russian Socialists were now
distracted by having to deal with a new new enemy. This process could have been made easier to do,
since the Jewish intelligentsia believe that the jewish masses were illogical in their interest in wanting
to improve the jewish condition and therefore were inferior, and not worth their concern or time. The
Russian Intelligentsia may have been influenced by theses opinions, while they were working with the

Bobby Seale s Black Panthers
Bobby Seale was an African American political activist and co founder and national chairman of the
Black Panther Party. He was born in Texas in 1936, Bobby Seale is one of a generation of young
African American radicals who broke away from the usually nonviolent Civil Rights Movement to
preach an idea of militant black empowerment, He helped create the Black Panthers (later renamed the
Black Panther Party) in 1966. In the 1970s, as the Black Panthers went off the grid, Seale took on a
quieter role, he was working toward improving social services in black neighborhoods and many other
little things.

In September 1962, Seale met Huey Newton at a rally that was protesting the Kennedy Administration
s blockade of Cuba. The pair quickly became friends, and that year marked the start of Seale s political
radicalism, which was deepened when Bobby attended a speech given by Malcolm X.
In 1966, Seale and Newton were ready to organize their beliefs and they formed the Black Panthers.
Originally created as an armed force protecting the black community from the racist Oakland police,
the Panthers reputation grew and people started to know who the Black Panthers were.. The Panthers
became a new, but powerful voice in the Civil Rights Movement, and they rejected the mainstream
movement s nonviolent approach.
The Panthers focused much of their time on communities, and the California movement sparked
chapters across the nation. By 1968, Seale decided that the formation and history of the Panthers was
needed to be explained to the public, so he wrote Seize the Time: The Story of the Black Panther Party
and Huey P. Newton (published in 1970). In that same year, Seale was arrested while protesting at the
Democratic National Convention. He and seven other defendants, known as the Chicago Seven after
this incident, were tried for conspiracy to incite riots that resulted in Seale being sentenced to four
years in prison for contempt of court. Seale was also tried during this period for the murder of a fellow

Michael Porter s The Competitive Advantage Of The Inner City
The essay The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City by Michael Porter, addresses the crisis of
inner cities, in particular, the economic distress and how to fix it. Porter discusses the advantages and
disadvantages of the inner city, and how previous efforts to improve the conditions of the city have
failed. Many past efforts were guided by the desire to meet the needs of individuals but not the city as
a whole, even programs that were aimed at economic development were ineffective because they
treated the inner city as an isolated island (317), separated from surrounding economy which favored
local small business that did not bring in outside business.
Michael Porter is a renowned economist and professor of Business Administration at the Harvard
Business School, author of 18 books and more than 125 articles with topics that range from industry
competition to economic development. Porter was born in Michigan and went on to study aerospace
and mechanical engineering in Princeton from where he graduated first in his class and with high
honors from both the prestigious societies Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, which he was also elected
into. He is known as the c and is recognized worldwide for his take on competition and company
strategy, many say that his work has redefined the thought process related to competition and
economic development. Some of his most influential books include Competitive Strategy: Techniques
for Analyzing Industries and Competitors, Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior
Performance and Redefining Health Care: Creating Value Based Competition On Results.
In the essay, The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City, Porter explained the reason that numerous
past efforts failed to improve the economic conditions of the inner city were mainly due to the
increasing social investment in order to see growth in economic activity. However, in order to create
real change, we have to start with the notion that inner city businesses should not only be profitable
but also capable of exporting goods and services (317). Many would think that a business in the inner
city would not thrive because business prosperity depends on location, however, it also varies on the

Taking a Look at Mental Workload
Mental workload (MWL) has been described as a hypothetical construct that is widely used in studies
of human factors and various measurement techniques to evaluate equipment and work systems in
terms of the workload experienced by people using them (Gopher, D. and Donchin, E. (1986)). It has
been identified that by optimizing the allocations of MWL to individual, human errors can be reduced
and lead to increase in system productivity (Xie and Salvendy, 2000, Moray, 1988, Gopher and
Donchin, 1986). Over the years extensive researches have been conducted to search for definition of
MWL but none of these were widely accepted or quantitatively verified. The most common definition
for MWL is as a function of internal capacity that reflects the interaction between attending task
demands and capacity imposed on the operator. Capacity is determined by operator s skill, training
and influenced by internal factors like stress and fatigue; whereas task demand is identified by number
of tasks to perform, task complexity and structure, amount of attention required and time available
(Bainbride 1997, Xie and Salvendy 2000). In addition, MWL was described in term of experience
load, which indicated that workload is not only task specific but also person specific and depends on
the interaction between operator and task structure (Schvaneveldt et al, 2004). Following this concept,
factors of experience like motivation and effort to perform a task or working difficulty and discomfort

Analysis Of Kate Chopin s A Respectable Woman

April 15, 2016
Many things one does or does not do in life are based on perception; our perception of someone, their
perception of us, and even our perception of ourselves. John Moore says, your opinion is your
opinion, your perception is your perception do not confuse them with facts or truth. Wars have been
fought and millions have been killed because of the inability of men to understand the idea that
everybody has a different viewpoint (Quotations for Martial Artists, John Moore, p 1). In Kate Chopin
s A Respectable Woman, perception is a major theme; for example, Mrs. Baroda s perception of her
husband s friend, Gouvernail, shifts drastically throughout the short story. Chopin s main theme of
perception is displayed well because of her use of literary devices such as imagery, setting and
dialogue; through these devices, Chopin reveals Mrs. Baroda s feelings and thoughts, based on the
way she perceives Gouvernail before, during and after meeting him for the first time; this paper will
discuss the literary devices and how Kate Chopin uses them to portray themes of freedom, identity,
desire, as well as perception. In the beginning of the story, Chopin uses description in order to form
Mrs. Baroda s initial perception of Gouvernail when she finds out her husband had invited him to
spend a few weeks on their plantation; Mrs. Baroda was less than pleased to discover his arrival. Mrs.

led to several of the players in our team to butt heads during one of the practices. The alteration
occurred during the last weeks of the season. Our goalie was complaining about the defenders not
doing their jobs. One of the defenders told the goalie to keep his mouth shut and when that did not
happen they fought leaving our team even more divided. At this point of the season all the losing, the

International Relations During The Cold War
Final Exam Essay over International Relations This paper will talk about how international relations
changed after the cold war in four parts. The first part will be talking about environment. The second
part will be talking about religion. The third part is sovereignty. The fourth part will have changes in
statehood. The fifth part will talk about gender and then the conclusion. Environment has been
growing as an academic subject for the past three decades and now it is on the international agenda
(Jackson). Since the human population is nearly doubling, there is a fight for higher standards of
living as a threat to the environment. The cause and effect is very simple. If the human population is
expanding, the intake of food consumption will increase. The effect is hard but easy to consume, food
scarcity. The aftermath of food production overtaxing the land might lead to deforestation and
desertification (Jackson). Industrial mass production of food threatens the depletion of raw materials
and energy. While the production is ever so good, there is an accepted fact that the gases released from
the production buildings will create chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases. In the book, it tells us that CFC
gases will cause damage to the Earth s ozone layer or the term called is Global Warming (Jackson).

  • 2. Review Of Pipilotti Rist s Pepperminta 0:10:04 0:02:04 On its surface, Pipilotti Rist s Pepperminta depicts a free spirited woman who liberates the members of her community with the power of ecstatic imagination; however, a more esoteric interpretation points to a film that is first and foremost a depiction of the psychedelic experience. Though the entire collection of evidence supporting this theory is beyond the scope of this analysis, there is ample evidence within one short sequence to substantiate the premise. The film stands out in its use of color, cinematography, and editing to create an imaginative world in which the characters are free to play. The same techniques also overtly resemble the effects of psychedelic substances such as lysergic diethylamide (LSD/Acid) and psilocybin mushrooms. In addition, the narrative, script, and mis en scene contain clues that may go unnoticed to non drug users, but that certainly point to hallucinogenic substances. Firstly, let us use the effects of psilocybin mushrooms to characterize the psychedelic experience. These effects include but are not limited to: Euphoria, philosophical thinking, intense feelings of wonder, starring and rainbow patterns, colors brighten or alter, visual hallucinations, sensation of energy within body, and feelings of connection with the universe. Each of these are displayed by Pepperminta by a combination of cinematography and post production editing and after effects. The sequence begins with the titular character pinwheeling through ... • 4. The Tulsa Race Riot Of 1921 The Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 was the culmination of racial tensions both endemic in American society as a whole in the period, and certain tensions peculiar to Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1921, Greenwood and its African American population became the outlet for these often violent tensions seething among Tulsa s white population. The following paper seeks to shed some further understanding on what motivated and pushed the whites of Tulsa, Oklahoma to such a violent, extreme reaction during the riot. To answer the question, Why were the whites so mean? it is necessary to understand the pre existing conditions that existed in Tulsa, Oklahoma before the actual riot took place in 1921. Pre existing racism in Tulsa was the foundation on which all the other causes of the riot were built upon. Wide spread segregation was still common in America at that time and it was accepted by many in the North and South that whites were inherently superior to blacks. These views were particularly strong in the South, where emancipated blacks were seen as a threat and scourge to white Southern culture, a culture which was utterly dominated by whites and where blacks were oppressed with no hope of equal protection under the law, equal representation, etc. This was also the case in Tulsa in the early 1900s. Blacks were segregated against by the white residents and as a consequence formed their own community, called Greenwood, on the north side of the Frisco Railroad tracks, which was heralded by ... As the U.S slowly shifted into the great depression as the 30s came around, it had affected the Hollywood film industry through economic crisis putting the movies into low budgeting films. But as the great depression seemed to be a major crisis for those living in the U.S another crisis soon followed as the great depression had ended, and that so happened World War II. When the U.S officially entered the war the whole Hollywood film industry changed drastically. • 6. Psychological Torture and the Fairness of Poverty in “The... Psychological Torture and the Fairness of Poverty The Lesson , by Toni Cade Bambara, is a first person narration of a young girl named Sylvia who through the teachings of Miss Moore learns about the socioeconomic gap between the wealthy and poor. White Torture , by Farnoosh Moshiri, is a short story told in third person of a woman enduring the psychological pain of torture which results in the audience questioning the morality of the subject at hand. While both stories differ greatly in tone and theme, they both demonstrate the potential of short stories when utilized properly. Bambara s use of Sylvia as the protagonist of the narrative gives the story a somewhat playful tone while tackling a subject that is far from it. While in the taxi Sylvia thinks to herself, So we heading down the street and she s boring us silly about what things cost and what our parents make and how much goes for rent and how money ain t divided up right in this country (Bambara 1143). This quote shows that by using Sylvia s first person take with the story, Bambara gives us a humorous approach of a child that must slowly come to the terms with the reality of wealth in the country. Moshiri s story White Torture, goes with a third person approach when telling her story. The woman who is the focal point of the story is never named and we only get glimpse of her history based on short flashbacks. The only real concrete information the audience is given is that she is in a holding facility ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Failure to Protect Laws and their Harmful Effects on Abused Mothers Violence against women has been, and continues to be, a problem in the United States. Domestic violence especially is a large part of today s society. It accounts for 21% of all violent crime (Truman Morgan, 2014), and one in three women have experienced physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner in their lifetime (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). Three women lose their lives to domestic violence every day (Lee, 2015). While domestic violence also affects many men, the prevalence of female victims is much higher. It is not anywhere near a novel problem in society, yet it is not even close to being solved. Steps have been made, though, to aid women in their escape from these unhealthy relationships. There are multiple hotlines at national and local levels, where woman can call in anonymously and report the violence they are experiencing or those close to victims can report violence they suspect or know to be happening. There are safe houses and shelters all over the country that will take women and children in if and when they finally do get out. • 32. Pros And Cons Of Single Transferable Voting System Every three years the Australian Senate is reelected using the single transferable voting system. In this system, voters rank the list of candidates by order of preference to fill spots in a multi member district. Then a quota is set based on the number of votes cast and the number of Senate seats to fill. If any candidate receives more votes than the quota, they receive a seat. Any surplus votes are then transferred to second choice candidates to see if they reach the quota, and so on until all Senate seats are filled. In reality, single transferable voting is not a perfect election system. Because it does not follow the independence of irrelevant alternatives criteria of Arrow s theorem, there is always a chance that the system could result ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Socialist Jews Confront The Pogroms Summary Some thing that I found interesting in the reading Socialist Jews Confront the Pogroms was that the Jewish intelligentsia would abandon their own people and disregard their struggles. Secondly, I found it interesting that the Russian intelligentsia would ignore the pogroms and not do anything about them, they even started supporting them. I found these two things to be interesting because it would be more beneficial to the Russian Socialist to have more people in their revolution regardless of who they were. This would also help further move their agenda along, which was to help the middle class, which a majority of Jews were apart of as well. Some reasonings as to why the Pogroms had happened could be that the Russian elites wanted to scapegoat the Jews in order to prevent the Socialist from overthrowing the Russian government. By scapegoating the Jews the Russian Socialists were now distracted by having to deal with a new new enemy. This process could have been made easier to do, since the Jewish intelligentsia believe that the jewish masses were illogical in their interest in wanting to improve the jewish condition and therefore were inferior, and not worth their concern or time. The Russian Intelligentsia may have been influenced by theses opinions, while they were working with the Jewish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pair quickly became friends, and that year marked the start of Seale s political radicalism, which was deepened when Bobby attended a speech given by Malcolm X. In 1966, Seale and Newton were ready to organize their beliefs and they formed the Black Panthers. Originally created as an armed force protecting the black community from the racist Oakland police, the Panthers reputation grew and people started to know who the Black Panthers were.. The Panthers became a new, but powerful voice in the Civil Rights Movement, and they rejected the mainstream movement s nonviolent approach. The Panthers focused much of their time on communities, and the California movement sparked chapters across the nation. By 1968, Seale decided that the formation and history of the Panthers was needed to be explained to the public, so he wrote Seize the Time: The Story of the Black Panther Party and Huey P. Newton (published in 1970). In that same year, Seale was arrested while protesting at the Democratic National Convention. He and seven other defendants, known as the Chicago Seven after this incident, were tried for conspiracy to incite riots that resulted in Seale being sentenced to four years in prison for contempt of court. • 36. Michael Porter s The Competitive Advantage Of The Inner City The essay The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City by Michael Porter, addresses the crisis of inner cities, in particular, the economic distress and how to fix it. Porter discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the inner city, and how previous efforts to improve the conditions of the city have failed. Many past efforts were guided by the desire to meet the needs of individuals but not the city as a whole, even programs that were aimed at economic development were ineffective because they treated the inner city as an isolated island (317), separated from surrounding economy which favored local small business that did not bring in outside business. Michael Porter is a renowned economist and professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, author of 18 books and more than 125 articles with topics that range from industry competition to economic development. Porter was born in Michigan and went on to study aerospace and mechanical engineering in Princeton from where he graduated first in his class and with high honors from both the prestigious societies Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, which he was also elected into. He is known as the c and is recognized worldwide for his take on competition and company strategy, many say that his work has redefined the thought process related to competition and economic development. In the essay, The Competitive Advantage of the Inner City, Porter explained the reason that numerous past efforts failed to improve the economic conditions of the inner city were mainly due to the increasing social investment in order to see growth in economic activity. However, in order to create real change, we have to start with the notion that inner city businesses should not only be profitable but also capable of exporting goods and services (317). Many would think that a business in the inner city would not thrive because business prosperity depends on location, however, it also varies on the way a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Taking a Look at Mental Workload Mental workload (MWL) has been described as a hypothetical construct that is widely used in studies of human factors and various measurement techniques to evaluate equipment and work systems in terms of the workload experienced by people using them (Gopher, D. and Donchin, E. (1986)). It has been identified that by optimizing the allocations of MWL to individual, human errors can be reduced and lead to increase in system productivity (Xie and Salvendy, 2000, Moray, 1988, Gopher and Donchin, 1986). Over the years extensive researches have been conducted to search for definition of MWL but none of these were widely accepted or quantitatively verified. The most common definition for MWL is as a function of internal capacity that reflects the interaction between attending task demands and capacity imposed on the operator. Capacity is determined by operator s skill, training and influenced by internal factors like stress and fatigue; whereas task demand is identified by number of tasks to perform, task complexity and structure, amount of attention required and time available (Bainbride 1997, Xie and Salvendy 2000). In addition, MWL was described in term of experience load, which indicated that workload is not only task specific but also person specific and depends on the interaction between operator and task structure (Schvaneveldt et al, 2004). Following this concept, factors of experience like motivation and effort to perform a task or working difficulty and discomfort would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Analysis Of Kate Chopin s A Respectable Woman Carson Chauncey ENC 1102 Martinez April 15, 2016 Many things one does or does not do in life are based on perception; our perception of someone, their perception of us, and even our perception of ourselves. John Moore says, your opinion is your opinion, your perception is your perception do not confuse them with facts or truth. Wars have been fought and millions have been killed because of the inability of men to understand the idea that everybody has a different viewpoint (Quotations for Martial Artists, John Moore, p 1). In Kate Chopin s A Respectable Woman, perception is a major theme; for example, Mrs. Baroda s perception of her husband s friend, Gouvernail, shifts drastically throughout the short story. Chopin s main theme of perception is displayed well because of her use of literary devices such as imagery, setting and dialogue; through these devices, Chopin reveals Mrs. Baroda s feelings and thoughts, based on the way she perceives Gouvernail before, during and after meeting him for the first time; this paper will discuss the literary devices and how Kate Chopin uses them to portray themes of freedom, identity, desire, as well as perception. In the beginning of the story, Chopin uses description in order to form Mrs. Baroda s initial perception of Gouvernail when she finds out her husband had invited him to spend a few weeks on their plantation; Mrs. Baroda was less than pleased to discover his arrival. We had to try out to get a spot on the team and all of us there had to compete against each other to play during the games. The previous year the team had finished second in the league so they had greater expectations for us to finish in first. Attitudes are an important part to compete and can influence everyone around you which demonstrates the three main components of attitudes: cognition, behavior, affect. One of the components that was demonstrated in my team is cognition. Cognition is the opinion or belief one has. Our team demonstrated the idea of cognition whenever we had a game and whoever was ... Our goalie was complaining about the defenders not doing their jobs. One of the defenders told the goalie to keep his mouth shut and when that did not happen they fought leaving our team even more divided. At this point of the season all the losing, the coach s incompetency and a 7 0 loss at home led us to giving up on the season. The only time our attitude changed was during the last game of the season. It was raining and the coach told us to have fun. • 42. International Relations During The Cold War Final Exam Essay over International Relations This paper will talk about how international relations changed after the cold war in four parts. The first part will be talking about environment. The second part will be talking about religion. The third part is sovereignty. The fourth part will have changes in statehood. The fifth part will talk about gender and then the conclusion. Environment has been growing as an academic subject for the past three decades and now it is on the international agenda (Jackson). Since the human population is nearly doubling, there is a fight for higher standards of living as a threat to the environment. The cause and effect is very simple. If the human population is expanding, the intake of food consumption will increase. The effect is hard but easy to consume, food scarcity. The aftermath of food production overtaxing the land might lead to deforestation and desertification (Jackson). Industrial mass production of food threatens the depletion of raw materials and energy. While the production is ever so good, there is an accepted fact that the gases released from the production buildings will create chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gases. In the book, it tells us that CFC gases will cause damage to the Earth s ozone layer or the term called is Global Warming (Jackson). Global Warming causes severe air pollution and rising sea levels. Using the term correctly, China is experiencing excessive air pollution due to limited regulation against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
