The characters in the story talk about a woman who lives with his son and his family. The woman s
character sets a tone of someone that is very talkative, opinionated, and social. The tone of a story is
the way the author expresses attitude in their writing. Evidence of this is throughout the story from the
time the family gets ready to leave for vacation, to her encounter at the restaurant with Red Sammy,
and her coming face to face with an escaped criminal. The children in the story display kids with a lot
of sass, spunk, and vocal to the point that it seems that they are out of line with what they say. The
boy, John, asks his grandmother to stay home if she doesn t want to go with them to Florida; the girl,
June, complains out loud that their grandmother has to go everywhere that they go (Kirszner Mandell,
