The Urban Explorations Project began as an investigation on the ordinary happenings and encounters in the Singapore heartlands, narrated through the retrieval of sound, colors, smells, soil samples, found objects, behavioral observations and traffic patterns. It stems from an interest in documenting the various phenomena of the urban landscape. Driven by a low-tech and location-based approach in collecting small data rather than making use of digitally available big data sets, the participants discuss, conceptualise and design their own methods and strategies to collect, document and express data.
For this presentation, I will speak about two explorations conducted in Singapore and in Paris. Given the vast quantity of big data collected from urban environments, how can small data collected by individuals at community levels be as engaging and important in studying our urban landscapes?

Safecast is an international, volunteer-centered organization devoted to open citizen science for the environment.
In response to the meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Safecast was formed and quickly began
monitoring, collecting, and openly sharing information on environmental radiation and other pollutants.

Urban Sensing
The ideas for the Urban Explorations Project are motivated by the
concept of urban sensing where individuals analyse the environment
they live in through various strategies and instruments which can range
from personal observations, taking samples from the environment,
measuring and comparing different environmental characteristics.

Small Data
Rather than looking at the city through data captured by
highly technological sensor systems, we wanted to explore
the city through our custom-built tools.

Motivation
Our motivation is driven by playfulness, naivety, and
curiosity. At the same time we want to narrate our
experience through our process and findings.

Building tools to sample and capture data using open
source technologies and low cost materials
With a low-tech driven approach in collecting data rather
than making use of digitally available big data sets, we
needed to conceptualise and design our own methods and
strategies to collect data.

or paintings and new technologies such as computational
design or digital fabrication.
