A X is a literary device, that is at times, a bad literary practice, as more often
than not, it is caused due to writer‘s block. The writer often tries to introduce
a new plot element towards the end of the story to allow the heroes to defeat
the villains. Or even just to bring about impossible things in the plot.
The earliest practitioners include Homer and Alexander Pope.
Some famous examples include Sir Walter Scott‘s novel Ivanhoe, in which
the protagonist, Wilfred of Ivanhoe, although weakened strikes a weak, half-
hearted blow to Sir Brian de Bois Gilbert in a duel to the death. The blow
proves fatal for Sir Brian, although no explanation is given.
Another famous example from current times is the concept of the Deathly
Hallows introduced by J.K. Rowling in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Among Hemendrakumar Roy’s translations of English
novels, a certain বিশালগড়ের বিভীষন and আজি ড়েশে অমলা are
particularly famous.
The first is one of the best known examples of the Victorian
horror genre, that spawned dozens of film (including one
featuring Gary Oldman in the titular role) adaptations and
numerous spin-offs.
The second has given rise to numerous speculations from
critics, many suggesting the entire novel might be a result
of a state of drug-induced vision. Though initially treated as
essentially a children’s novel, today it is read as a classic,
even taught at certain universities.

The following is an extract from a recent short story, titled ‘The
Arrangements’, written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie for the
New York Times:
““Great. Did you see the polls, honey? Can you believe this?”
His voice had an ebullient pitch. He still did not entirely believe
this was happening — his lead in the polls, the new veneer of
being taken seriously. She could tell from the disbelieving
urgency of his actions, and from the way he flipped through
cable channels and scanned newspapers for his name.
“Remember I told you: You will win,” she said.
She always tried to sound casually believing, as if the polls
were merely incidental, and her faith had conjured his victory.
But she was as startled by his rise as he was.”

On a snowy Paris evening in 2008, Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp
got into a little trouble. So they came up with a simple idea—tap a
button and solve the problem so that people are relieved of such
problems which often happen on a regular basis. What started in San
Fransisco in 2010 has spread over to 507 cities worldwide by 2016.
Garett remarked, “Whether it’s a sandwich, or a package, we use
technology to give people what they want, when they want it.
Delivering your ice cream, your valentine roses, your pizza on
demand and even your pack of gum”
For cities, the simple idea helps strengthen local economies, and
make streets safer. The initiative taken by Garrett and Travis has
become so popular that many economists envisage the idea to be the
next $100 billion thing.
