Path Goal Theory
Path Goal Leadeship Theory and Expectancy Theory of Motivation Applications to the Movie Miracle
Part 1
I have chosen the movie Miracle as an illustration of an individual, Herb Brooks, fulfilling the
parameters of Robert House s Path Goal Theory .
There are events that one witnesses throughout one s life that for various reasons leave an indelible
imprint on one s heart and soul. The unexpected victory of the US hockey over the heavily favored
Russian team in the 1980 Olympic Games was one of those events. I was at a cocktail party and
someone turned on the TV and soon the entire group was gathered around the set, small talk forgotten,
as what has been described as the greatest sporting event of the 20th century unfolded. ... Show more

He tells them that they don t have enough talent to win on talent alone and that the name on the front
of their jersey means a lot more than the one on the back. He repeats his message of win or loose, play
like champions. Over and over Brooks shouts Again , driving the players to exhaustion. He doesn t
stop, ignoring the pleas of his assistants, until the future team Captain, Mike Eruzione, states I play for
team USA. Brooks lets them go and a turning point has been reached. They are finally becoming a
team , one of destiny with a common purpose.
This also is another example of Brooks employing directive leadership to reach a goal despite the
effect of a subordinate contingency factor, locus of control. When the team first came together, they
were group of highly competitive and independent group of young men hwho identified with their past
institutions. Their locus of control was mainly internal and Brooks, with his concept of a cohesive
tem, dependent upon another and the coach for direction, gradually moving their locus of control
toward a more external variety, I play for team USA . He has imposed his will on the team and he is
now able to lead direct them completion of their common goal.
A third and clear example of directive leadership occurs during a session in the film room where he
instructs the team on the tactics and strategy they will employ to be able to stay

Examples Of Humility Of David
The book of scriptures depicts humility as a modest perspective of self, a magnified perspective of
God, and accommodation to Divine beings will. One of the books of scriptures most compelling
characters David, had this sort of humility that added to his enormity as a pioneer. We realize that
David was an unassuming pioneer in light of the fact that he was first not ruined by honor, and he
would likewise give god the wonderfulness for what he finished.
The primary, David was not ruined by honor god favored him with. Samuel anointed David ruler of
isreal, however what did David do after such an extraordinary occasion? Ruler saul went to go get
david, and he discovered him right back at his old employment shperding the sheep. The anointing oil
did not ruin david. Despite the immense criticalness of his anointing, david did a reversal to the fields
to look after his sheep with the blessed anointing oil still upon his head. David may have been the
future ruler, however he was not above doing the lowliest, dirtiest work in all of isreal.
The second, is David would give god the wonderfulness for every one of the things that he fulfilled.
At the point when David got to be lord of all isreal, he wrote in second Samuel 22 as a tune of
commendation to God. In spite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the point when planning to battle Goliath, Saul attempted to make him wear his own particular
protection. In any case, David promptly conceded, I can t run with these; for I have not demonstrated
them (1 Samuel 17:39). David was a young fellow, and Saul was taller than any other individual in
Israel. The greater part of us would have resolved to wear the protective layer as opposed to concede
we weren t capable. Pioneers must know their qualities and shortcomings. David s quality was the
Master, his shortcoming was himself, and he knew both exceptionally well. Unstable and pleased
individuals are frequently oblivious to their own particular

Robber Barons Dbq Essay
Throughout the late 19th century, several men such as John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and
Cornelius Vanderbilt built empires in railroad construction, coal mining, and the oil industry. These
industrial leaders helped the economy flourish and created a leading industrial power in the world.
After a while, critics began to question their power and objective. Critics began to call them robber
barons for their selfish and corrupted techniques. While they took advantage of careless government
regulation and no income tax, they generated huge business that benefited the country. They employed
many people and provided critical goods and services. There is a small margin to justify the
characterizations of a robber baron for the leading industrialists of the late 19th century, but more as
captains of their respective industries. Industrialists and business men were philanthropists at these
times. Andrew Carnegie published an excerpt that largely influenced many wealthy entrepreneurs ...

Thomas Edison was an inspiring inventor of his time. His inventions, like the light bulb, were the

reason why no one bought it. When he found a way to manufacture steel cheaper, he knew this was
going to impact the world immensely. Now with cheaper steel, many buildings were created, thus
creating populous cities with many skyscrapers and paving the way for cities. Philanthropists made the

How Do Urban Planners Use Zoning
Urban planners use zoning to designate the land use in the city. Examples of zoning districts include
residential, commercial, industrial, and mixed use. Within these districts, there are certain uses,
permitted use, in which the land is intended; in addition, there are exceptions to these uses. Zoning can
be disadvantageous due to the discriminatory practices based off of race and class; however, zoning is
a very important tool because it provides a guide for future development and support public interest.

Confronting an ongoing world economic recession and very high rates of unemployment throughout
certain parts of the world such as Europe, the EEC was looking for many new ways to get the most out
of its union. June, 1984, a meeting in Fontainebleau, France, established a Committee on Institutional
Affairs under the chairmanship of Irish Senator James Doodge. The committee proposed not only that
the EEC work harder toward achieving the already stated goal of abolishing frontiers with the
common market, but also that the European Parliament be given more decision making power and the
European Community be allowed a greater role in security and defense matters. Lord Arthur
Cockfield, Who was responsible for preparing a detailed program and timetable for completing the
internal market, took a more cautious approach that centered on economics, but that went far beyond
the current customs union. Space he oversaw the writing of completing the internal market: White

Shylock s Characteristics Of Merchantlock In The Merchant...
Antonio was a typical narrow minded christian when it came to religion; however, he was so true and
passionate about his friends he was willing to risk his life to help his friend in need. Antonio, a
christian, strongly abhors and is very abrasive towards Shylock, a jew: You call me misbeliever,
cutthroat dog, And set upon my Jewish gaberdine,... You, that did void your rheum upon my beard,
And foot me as you spurn a stranger cur (1.3.121 128). Within this quote Shylock is talking to Antonio
and telling him after he has called him a dirty dog, spit on his beard and Jewish clothes, and kicked
him he wants to ask to loan money from him. This shows that Antonio is very narrow minded because
the main reason he mistreats Shylock is because he is a Jew. In addition, this shows that he is very
abrasive when it comes to Shylock because he has done so many terrible things to him over a period
of time and hasn t felt sorry or bad once for what he has done and how he as treated him. In addition,
although, Antonio is very narrow minded when it comes to religion he is willing to risk his life to help

Analysis Of Bonnie Anderson s What You See You Want...
Writer: Jessica Morris
Category: Interview
Title: Bonnie Anderson: What you see is what you get with me
Body:
Dropping her single, Unbroken on Friday, 19 year old Bonnie Anderson has firmly placed her stake in
the Australian music industry. With her powerhouse voice and a stage presence that puts people
double her age to shame, the song is a pop infused sure fire hit for the Sony artist.
It s definitely... very anthemic. Anderson shares with PPcorn. It s kind of about forgetting what s gone
on in the past, or what the hard times that you re trying to overcome, or you have overcome, and
focusing on where you want to go and how you re going to get there.
Penned while living in LA, the singer took a step back after the success of her Platinum hit Blackout
to embrace her life as an artist. I went overseas and I decided to do that off my own back...and live it
and breathe it basically. I was writing two sessions a day in LA and I was just really, really digging
deep for that special song, you know. I didn t want to just relate something that wasn t me. I wanted it
to be right and for people to be able to connect to it.
Her time abroad also allowed her to explore her own sound, and see what she could come up with
musically. As an artist, we re always experimenting and trying new things. I mean, I grew up listening
to soul music, so...I love soul music. My mom was a singer growing up, and was always very involved
in music and the end scene live. That s where I

White Man s Burden Imperialism
Views on Imperialism
Imperialism is the extension of a nation s authority by territorial acquisitions or by the establishment
of economic and political dominance over other nations (American Heritage Dictionary). Both
Imperialists and Anti Imperialists in the late nineteeth century published arguments for or against the
justification of Westerners civilizing less advanced peoples. Western societies Imperialist motives
were to further their own economic and political standings. Humanitarianism outreach and Social
Darwinism were excuses to assert Western dominance. British writer, Rudyard Kipling s poem The
White Man s Burden aimed to persuade Europeans why they could and should civilize primitive non
white people; British Parliament and anti imperialist, Henry Labouchere responds with his own poem,

He supported the imperialist aim that, Westerners shouldered the responsibility for governing and
converting the supposed savages under charge and strove to remake them superior European models
(Mckay, 809). The hope was that these primitive nonwhite people would eventually benefit from
imperialism and modern achievements and higher levels of living (Mckay, 810). The white man s
burden was to send forth the best yet breed the brightest white men to go over to these under
performing primitive countries and work hard at converting and modernizing theses evil and immature
people Kipling refers to as, Half devil and half child (Mckay et al., 810). Kipling s poem makes a case
for imperialism by telling the Europeans it is their moral obligation. It was a burden because the task
would it be easy. The nonwhites will not be open to new ways and the Europeans will have weariness
and the hate of those ye guard (Mckay, 810). This hate for imperialism is very evident in Henry
Labouchere s poem The Brown Man s

The Catholic Church And Nazi Party Essay
One is a faith that billions of people have worshiped for hundreds of years, and the other is a regime
based on racist theories. Catholicism and Nazism. These two congregations have more in common
than anyone could have imagined. Both had principles and theories. History shows that both parties
shared hatred and sought out those they disapproved of for questioning, torture and even execution.
The medieval Catholic Church and Nazi Party had common motives. However, those in disagreement
argue that one is a faith and the other is politics. The actions of the Nazi Party were distinct
replications of those of the medieval Roman Catholic Church, which is a reminder to all that any
prevailing party, whether it be political or religious, can command a threatening power.
Catholicism was a prominent religion for over 1,000 years. Before the Reformation of the 1500s,
anyone who was Christian belonged to the Catholic Church any other form of Christianity was
considered a denomination. To eliminate denominations, the Church turned to inquisition. The Papal
Inquisition began in the late 12th century, when Pope Innocent III sent cardinals to Southern France,
where heresy was popularizing. However, the official inauguration is considered 1231, when Pope
Gregory IX sent Dominicans to Southern France, Germany, Austria, Lombardy, and Aragon to convict
heretics. Heretics were granted the chance to admit their deceit and return to the Roman Catholic
Church. If their heresy was sustained,

Too Much Television On Children And Technology
Adults have been worried about their children watching too much TV since, well, forever. For
decades, Americans had only one or two TVs in their home. Now a single household might have
dozens of them around the home. But the times have changed and in actuality, we are all surrounded
by screens nearly all the time from television, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and video games. The
American Academy of Pediatrics claims that children spend an average of 7 hours a day on what it
terms entertainment media, and that includes TVs, computers, phones, and other electronic devices.
The AAP also says that excessive media use can lead to attention problems, school difficulties, sleep
and eating disorders, and obesity. Are children spending too much time staring at screens? Should
parents limit how much time children spend on technology?
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Society of Pediatrics state infants aged 0 2
years should not have any exposure to technology, 3 5 years be restricted to one hour per day, and 6 18
years restricted to 2 hours per day (AAP 2001/13, CPS 2010). Between 0 and 2 years, infant s brains
triple in size, and continue in a state of rapid development to 21 years of age (Christakis 2011). Early
brain development is usually determined by environmental stimuli, or lack thereof. Stimulation to a
developing brain caused by the overexposure to technologies, such as cell phones, internet, tablets,

The Importance Of Pragmatic Language Processing
as Goodman Stuhlmuller (2013) claim that pragmatic language understanding is a social cognition.
Perhaps the complex systems involved in pragmatic language understanding are modules that
specifically process information about social context, and, it is likely that these interpretation. Perhaps
one might start by searching for data suggesting that semantic processing and pragmatic processing
involve different parts of the brain.
In a series of experiments, Rabagliati, Pylkkanen Marcus (2013) tested linguistic ambiguity resolution
in children compared to adults. They found that children processed language differently than adults
and that children had trouble integrating contextual cues (Rabagliati et al., 2013, p. 1085). And they
suggested that this may be because children s executive function abilities are not fully developed
(Rabagliati et al. p. 1085, 2013). This notion is in alignment with previous research by Khanna and
Boland (2010) who studied lexical ambiguity resolution in 7 to 10 year old s and in adults. They found
that those who had more fully developed executive function abilities also were more sensitive to
context in their lexical interpretation (Khanna Boland, 2010).
These results are starting to paint a picture that the structures for analyzing and interpreting syntax and
semantics may be different than the structures that are involved in a pragmatic interpretation. One
might hypothesize that the modules for strict semantic understanding are in

The Consequences Of Alcohol Analysis
Alcohol is a very widely used drug, and is therefore present in many clinical and forensic toxicology
cases. Quantitation of alcohol levels in patients affects the clinical treatment they receive as well as
any legal consequences associated with the incident that led to their hospitalization. Alcohol analysis
and its consequences for postmortem cases also forms a large part of the forensic toxicologist s
workload [1 2].
Although gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GCMS) or gas chromatography flame ionization

However, there is still contention over its existence, prevalence, and severity; this is evidenced by
recent articles and court cases contesting its relevance [3,7] . It is problematic that almost every
mention of this phenomenon goes back to a single study in 1995 that failed to put the issue to rest [6].
Forensically, this research has multiple implications. The presence and level of alcohol in a victim or
perpetrator s system has great bearing on their behavior and frame of mind. As a result, the amount of
alcohol in a person s blood can serve as a strong piece of evidence. From a sentencing standpoint, the
level of legal consequences assigned to an individual is also be dependent on the amount of
intoxication detected [1]. With these consequences in mind, it is imperative that the test used to
measure ethanol levels is reliable and accurate. If there is a possibility that the enzymatic assays used
widely throughout hospitals can be inaccurate under certain conditions, it is necessary that the users
and interpreters of those assays know that interference can occur and when it might happen. If markers
can be developed to determine when further testing for ethanol should be done, the reliability of the
test will be greatly increased. In this study, the aim will be to determine if lactate and LDH in
clinically possible antemortem concentrations can cause a significant

at that point the criminal would over look the guard and proceed to rob the place, the guard could then

The Pros And Cons Of Two Dollar Click
Two Dollar Click is a paid to click site, offering rewards that are just too much to be taken seriously.
They have been online for a few years and somehow they are still going.
The owner Jordan Welsh, which is thought to be an alias, has been involved with other scam sites Six
Dollar Clicks, Ten Dollar Clicks, NeoDollar, Bux Inc and perhaps more.
Another name that comes up when researching these sites is Michael Pratt, who is a well known
scammer. However, he claims not to be running the scam sites, he sells the scripts that make the sites
function.
Anyways, although convinced this was a scam I signed up to have a closer look.

To have more ads to view you will have to upgrade to premium membership.
In order to be paid you need to have earnt at least $1000, which is a huge amount. Most PTC sites
have payment thresholds of a few dollars. The payments can be made through Paypal or Payza.
Payments are made on a net 60 basis, which means you will recieve your money 60 days after asking
for it.
I don t think you should be under any illusion, you will never be paid. Well known PTC sites that have
been around for a few years rarely offer ads to watch even at $1. So $2 a click is not possible, don t be
taken in by the hype.
How do Two Dollar Click make money?
To fund the click payments they provide advertising. For an ad to be watched or clicked 1000 times it
only costs $5 or 1/2 a cent per click. You can order up to 25000 clicks, always for the same price of
1/2 cent per click. Premium members can also buy banner ads.
Consequently, Two Dollar Click are paying out $2 for something for which they are paid 1/2 cent.
Who pays the other $1.995? No one, they cannot generate sufficient money to pay their members,
clearly this is unsustainable.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Analysis

Hello Marvis Bellagwa,
I enjoyed reading your great post. The prostate specific antigen (PSA) analysis is indeed the utmost

The Film Love Actually by Bridget Jones Essay
The Film Love Actually by Bridget Jones
Love Actually Essay
The film trailers designed to promote the film Love Actually represent a particular view of modern
love and relationships. Explore this idea within a media analysis framework.
From the makers of Bridget Jones s Diary and Notting Hill, the film Love Actually is a romantic
comedy about igniting laughter, wrecking havoc, breaking hearts, daring commitment and forcing
choices. The film is of a typical romantic comedy genre, which is targeted at teenagers and adults. The
key ingredients of a romantic comedy are that it is optimistic and it has humour combined with love

Love and relationships in modern society means a strong positive emotion of regard and affection. In
my views, it is an intense affectionate concern or an intense sexual desire for another person. It is a
term of endearment and a strong fondness or enthusiasm for something. A stereotypical view of
contemporary love exists, which is based principally on gender, social class and race. In Love
Actually, Huge Grant, who is the prime minister, falls in love with his secretary; Martine McCutcheon.
This contrasts with the stereotype regarding social background, as Huge Grant is of a much higher
status than Martine McCutcheon in the film. The title of the film automatically reveals various types
of love, with the emphasis on actually. I think this suggests that the views of love and relationships
portrayed in the film are the views of contemporary love. In the title of the film, Love Actually, the
word Love is highlighted in bold and is red. Stereotypically, red is the colour of love, which is
probably why this colour was used. The soundtracks for both trailers are very different. The first
trailer consists of slow and romantic music, which suggests that it is a film targeted at couples or older

Personal Narrative Losing Weight Essay
Personal Narrative Losing Weight
I know I should lose weight. It requires a lot of perseverance that I one time had and need to find
again. Many of the reasons I should lose weight are very clear to me. I have read many articles and
have heard what my doctor has told me. I lost over forty pounds about three years ago, unfortunately, I
gained it back two fold when I was pregnant with my daughter. I still have not been able to get rid of
this weight since she was born. Sometimes it causes me to get tired just from going to the grocery
store. I also found out in September of last year that I have hypertension (high blood pressure) which
effected my vision drastically by the following November. Other problems are social such as the ...

Currently I must take a pill every day in order to keep my hypertension under control. Since I am not
fond of taking medication, I would not miss taking it if losing weight would get rid of my
hypertension all together. If I forget to take my pill first thing in the morning, I begin to get headaches
and start feeling a little edgy by noon. My doctor is in the opinion that my weight is the main cause of
my high blood pressure. I also began to have problems with my eyesight almost immediately after I
learned I had hypertension. My vision began to get blurry and I felt pressure behind my eyes that
scared me greatly. I had to get a much stronger prescription for my contact lenses and now have to
return to my eye doctor to have my eyes tested every six months. My optometrist tells me that it is
possible to reverse the effects the hypertension has had on my eyes. These health issues have become
serious problems for me and if I lost weight, there is a strong possibility of becoming free of these
problems. Losing weight would also reduce the risk of other health problems. My doctor has
explained several of these risks to me. I do not remember all of them, but the ones that stick out in my
mind the most are very common among the world today. He mentioned several forms of cancer to me.

As I mentioned earlier, there were 2 trials that we performed for each solution, and each trial had a
different concentration. We did this to see what the pH change would be like for changing
concentrations. For mandelic acid, as molarity increased, so did the K SUB a /SUB , but the pH value
went down. This shows that as the concentration increased, so did the strength of the acid, which is
shown in the K SUB a /SUB value increasing. The more acid there is, the stronger the solution will be,
as well as increasing the ability to dissociate. As the concentration increased, the acidity value
decreased. This means that the solution became more acidic the more acid preset, the more acidic the
solution is. But, despite the fact that the K SUB a /SUB increased, it was by such a small amount that
it is still considered a weak acid. The same changes could be found in the trials that involved acetic
acid. As the concentration of the solution increased, so did the K SUB a /SUB , but the pH value went
down. And the reasons as such are the same for acetic acid as they were for mandelic acid. Despite the
change in K SUB a /SUB value, acetic acid is still considered a weak acid.

Impact Of King Kalakaua On The Hawaiian Renaissance
A changing Nation
The Hawaiian renaissance was a time period in Hawaii s history that influenced many people during
that time. King Kalakaua created conflict between the Hawaiians and Americans. The United States of
America failed to recognize Hawaii s opposition to annexation and created compromises that made a
big impact on how Hawaii flourished culturally, politically, and economically.
Hawaiian Monarchy was slowly dying due to their powers being taken away. Hawaiian Culture was
beginning to get lost from society because more and more people were being drawn to foreign beliefs
and ways of life as the haole population continued to grow, this is initially when The First Hawaiian
Renaissance had begun. Compromises, many made by King Kalakaua, ... Show more content on

The Hawaiian Renaissance also gave natives an opportunity to fight for what they knew was right
about preserving the Hawaiian culture forever. This provided an avenue for people who did not know
Hawaiian culture to witness, and at the same time, understand what it took to preserve the culture.
Lastly, the Hawaiian renaissance had further pushed the United states to find ways to take away what
rightfully belonged to the Hawaiians, including culture, in means of agreements that were not written
on just formal documents but done without consent. Regardless, it had also drawn Hawaii as nation
under the United States. The conflicts and compromises made during this Hawaiian Renaissance
completely changed what people now know as Hawaii, and it is truly an important aspect of what it
came to be today and how the culture of Hawaiians was preserved. People all over the world,
especially those who know nothing about Hawaii or even America, should all learn about this major
time in Hawaii s history where people fought against the eradication of their culture, as their way of
life. The Hawaiian renaissance is too vague to be compared to a personal problem in life, but it shows
how with a conflict and many compromises, many things can

Dual Nature In Young Goodman Brown
The Dual Nature of Man in Young Goodman Brown
In Young Goodman Brown, Hawthorne tells the story of one man s loss of faith in the human race. As
Goodman Brown travels into the woods one night, he is sees the innermost secrets and desires of the
people he once placed upon a pedestal. He sees that humans are evil by nature, and this causes him to
lose faith in his fellow man. By viewing the story as an allegory, the journey into the woods is
associated with the Puritan concept of justification. The Puritans viewed justification, or the means by
which one receives the salvation of Christ, as a psychological journey into the hell (or evil) of the self
(Soler). Goodman Brown fails to complete his process of individuation because ... Show more content

The Apollonian nature of the human seeks to express itself through representations and illusions (such
as art), which was regarded as vulgar to the Puritans. The Dionysian seeks to express itself through the
performing arts (such as song or dance) (Foster 63 64). This was seen as sinful (one may recall the
Salem witch hunt was started when children were caught dancing in the woods). Brown, growing up
Puritan, would have had both of these basic human instincts suppressed. This suggests that something
must have brought forth the need for these instincts to express themselves.
The marriage of Brown and Faith may have brought these issues forward in his unconscious or maybe
even conscious mind. Marriage would have qualified Brown to enter the communion of sinners
through the sexual nature of the marriage bed. Sexual desires for his wife would have challenged
Brown, because of the belief that sex was necessary only for reproduction not pleasure (Male 78).
Sexual desires are associated to the Dionysian (Foster 64). To handle the conflict between faith and
desire, Brown would have to come to terms with them, thus introducing the Apollonian instinct of
individuation.
Brown s journey into the woods is his journey of individuation, as he must come to terms with the
dark desires of his id. For the Puritans, the dark woods are a symbol of mistrust of their own corrupt
hearts and faculties (this is also an archetypal symbol), which directly

The Importance Of Leadership In The Aeneid
What would you do if your homeland was destroyed and you were forced to seek another home in a
faraway country? Would it test your leadership skills? Would you become timid in the face of such a
tremendous task? Well, this is exactly what is faced by Aeneas in the epic poem, The Aeneid. Except
on top of every other obstacle in his way he is also responsible for getting all of the other survivors to
their new homeland. However, the whole story is overshadowed by a battle for power between the
Gods that Aeneas is caught in the middle of. While much of what Aeneas does throughout the poem
shows great leadership skills, he is still a human and has flaws. We see many of the Army s core
values as we look at Aeneas leadership style. It is these values that we will be talking about today.
First I will be talking about how duty affects Aeneas leadership style. Secondly, I will discuss how
respect affects his ability to lead his men through the trials and tribulations which they must endure
throughout the epic. Thirdly, I will talk about how we can see selfless service demonstrated through
his actions. Fourthly, I will be discussing how his honor dives his whole life and how we can see this
demonstrated throughout the story. Fifthly, I will give examples of how Aeneas Integrity shaped his
leadership style. Sixthly, I will talk about how personal courage is shown by the whole group of
Trojans that embarked on the journey. Finally, I will give a brief overview of how all of these

Analysis Of Alain De Boordon s The Consolations Of Philosophy
What is popular is not inherently true. That is what Alain De Botton is trying to show his readers
through his work, The Consolations of Philosophy. While there are many beliefs that are well known
and shared amongst a vast community, they can always be questioned, and if they can be questioned,
there may be an exception. De Botton states that the reason people do not question our societies
beliefs and values is fear of rejection by one s peers and the community as a whole; just as Socrates
was. However, some things that we, as a community, hold to be true are true and should not be
questioned, at times it is more important to stick to one s moral compass rather than question a
societies laws. Not wanting to be alienated from society is something we fear as individuals because
many people do not want to live their lives alone, being a part of a community can be important to
some people and while that can be questioned, it does not mean it is a bad thing. Being able to
question society allows for one to think for themselves and find their own beliefs rather than accepting
the ones from the environment they were born into. Today, the world is so diverse, with a range of
different and even contradictory beliefs on what is true, questioning them is The main argument
presented in De Botton s reading is that what is popular is not always true. Every society has a set of
beliefs they hold to be true and important. People will act according to these beliefs because it is
shown to them throughout their lives that this is the correct way to behave; going against the status
quo can result in unpopularity (De Botton, 2000, p9). The fear of rejection and unpopularity is strong
within each society, most individuals believe that it is important to be apart of a community, being
exiled from one would result in loneliness and most societal conventions, like marriage, revolve
around not being alone. Society tends to put pressure on people to marry, people who do not can be
seen as deficient and not to create one s own family can be a great source of anxiety for some
(Blackmore, 2005, p327), it is seen as important to not be alone in one s life. Even De Botton states,

Examples Of Moral Philosophy
Moral Philosophy is the rational study of the meaning and justification of moral claims. A moral claim
evaluates the rightness or wrongness of an action or a person s character . For example, stealing is
wrong claims that the act of stealing is wrong, and people should not be dishonest claims a character
trait (i.e. dishonesty) is wrong (Gert and Gert). Descriptively, morality refers to certain codes of
conduct put forward by a society or a group (such as a religion) or accepted by an individual for
his/her own behavior. Normatively, it refers to a code of conduct that, given specified conditions,
would be put forward by all rational persons. ( What Is Moral Philosophy? ).

How Is Imagery Used In The Sniper
The short story, The Sniper, takes place in Dublin, Ireland, in 1922, during the Irish Civil War. On the

a Republican sniper, is pursued throughout the whole story. Faced with numerous challenges, he
battles unbearable pain, atop the impossible situation placed before him. At certain times, he uses his
utter cleverness to outsmart the free state sniper. Eventually, he figures out that the man he shot was
his brother. Liam O Flaherty uses strong sensory and imagery details, inner thinking, and revealing

The long June twilight faded into night. Dublin lay enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the
moon that shone through fleecy clouds, casting a pale light as of approaching dawn over the streets
and the dark waters of the Liffey... Here and there through the city, machine guns and rifles broke the
silence of the night, spasmodically, like dogs barking on lone farms. Liam O Flaherty starts the story
off with a strong sense of detail, and it immediately emerges the reader into the story and makes them
envision being in Dublin at the time of the war. Halfway throughout the story, the sniper gets shot. The
author uses sensory details to create an image that makes the reader envision the actual pain the
character is battling against. Then taking out his field dressing, he ripped open the packet with his
knife. He broke the neck of the iodine bottle and let the bitter fluid drip into the wound. A paroxysm of
pain swept through him. He placed the cotton wadding over the wound and wrapped the dressing over
it. He tied the ends with his teeth. When the author emerges the reader into the story, it makes them
able to relate to the agony the sniper is in, which contributes back to the mood.

Essay about The Voice of the Sea in The Awakening
The Voice of the Sea in The Awakening
Many different symbols were utilized in Kate Chopin s The Awakening to illustrate the underlying
themes and internal conflict of the characters. One constant and re emerging symbol is the sea.
The voice of the sea is seductive, never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul
to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice
of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close
embrace (Chopin 25).

This rebirth takes her back to a time of innocence and curiosity that allows her to explore life through
new eyes. Edna is filled with swelling emotions and reveals Sometimes I feel this summer as if I were
walking through the green meadow again. Idly, aimlessly, unthinking, and unguided (Chopin 30).
Edna s recollection of this event allows her to more clearly recognize her internal turmoil.
The link between Edna s awakening and the ocean becomes even clearer when after several attempts
she finally learns to swim. The first time she ventures out into the ocean alone is the first step toward
her independence. She panics when she realizes how far she has gone alone and fears drowning. This
incident represents Edna gaining control over her body and becoming more aware of her full potential.
The ocean helps her recognize that her body is her own and she awakens to her physical, mental, and
emotional capabilities. But that night she was like the little tottering, stumbling, clutching child, who
of a sudden realizes its powers, and walks for the first time alone, boldly and with overconfidence.
(Chopin 47). Edna s sudden terror in the middle of the ocean signifies that she may not be able to
venture out as far as she wants to and may have to turn back. She wanted to swim far out, where no

Positivism In Jurisprudence
As Nigel Simmonds puts it in his book, Central Issues in Jurisprudence, Hart was one of the greatest
exponents of Legal Positivism in the mid twentieth century. In his careers most famous work, The
Concept of Law , Hart explains the nature of law in relation to the framework of legal thought while
also outlining the essential characteristics of a robust legal system. As an introduction to his work,
Hart explains that his theory is based upon the works of Jeremy Bentham and Jane Austin who were
some of the earlier proponents of Legal Positivism but in such an effect where it aims to provide An

difference between what Law is and what it ought to be, which was highly synonymous of Bentham s
work. One must not confuse Austin s work as a briefer, synonymous and more objective version of
Bentham s theory as despite the similarities between their theories there were differences too such as
Bentham s proposition of Complete law that adequately expresses the will of the legislature by way of
codification as opposed to Austin s acceptability of judicial law making. This essay aims at briefly
explaining the key components of Hart s theory while constantly comparing and contrasting his
propositions with those of his predecessors, Bentham and Austin as the former quintessentially flows
from Hart s aim, the one of providing the world of Jurisprudence with an improved analysis of some
of the earlier proposed correlation between law, morality and coercion. This will be later followed by a
detailed analysis and subtle criticism, where necessary, of Hart s theory because the important
question pertinent to the validity of his philosophy will be left unanswered if his departure from
classical positivism isn t examined.

Examples Of If I Would Travel To Paris
(If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?)
If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would like to travel to Paris the capital of France. Paris is
said to be one of the best cities in the world. Although it is urban, people there still live romantic and
slow paced lives. I think that such a place is hard to extremely rare. Also, Paris is famous for its
politics, fashion, arts and science. I really want to try out the food in Paris especially the cheese there.
I have also read a lot about the attractions in Paris such as the Louver, the Eiffel Tower and the Notre
dame de Paris. I yearn to see for myself these great works of art. Paris is also a shopping heaven; there
are different famous brands and luxury brands in different department stores. Parisians understand
how to enjoy their life and how to find happiness from ordinary things. They also understand how to
transform their ideals about life into art, make them into music or other artistic forms. In a word, I
really love Paris.

current systems at Hoosier Burger are not getting the job done. This is causing customer discontent
and is affecting business negatively. The new system is going to be heavily focused on inventory

help Jim with this project, how would you utilize the concept of incremental commitment in the
design of the baseline project plan? Jim outlined some objectives in the scope statement for this
project. After each of these objectives have been tackled and overcome, I would utilize incremental
commitment to review what has just been accomplished, what is left to be accomplished and whether
or not the project team is meeting its goals and if those goals are still in line with the companies goals.
6. If you were assigned to Jim s team for this project, when in the project schedule (in what phase of
after which activities are completed) do you think you could develop an economics analysis of the
proposed system? What economic feasibility factors do you think would be relevant? After each of the
objectives in Jim s scope statement have been addressed, that is answered on paper with how they plan
on accomplishing the task, would be a good time to assess economic analysis. At this time, there
would be a clear understanding of what should be needed to address each objective successfully and

The Invasion Of Japan Into China
The Japanese and Chinese have always had disputes with one another, and one of the biggest reasons
for the Chinese and Japanese hating each other is the Invasion of Japan into China. It began with
Japan invading and occupying Manchuria causing the hatred between the two countries to grow
immensely.
According to the New World encyclopedia, what made matter worse, was that China was at war with
itself, the war was between the Chinese Nationalist Party and the Chinese Communist Party. Sun Yat
sen dies in 1925, soon after, commander in chief Chiang Kai Shek of the National Army set out on an
expedition to the North. This expedition was an effort to exterminate the commanders of the war and
as well as feudalism. However, when a year passes, in 1926, the Nationalist Party had divided into left
and right factions where communism had begun to grow from the inside out. After many disputes, on
April 7, 1927, Chiang and other nationalist had decided to hold a meeting where they had decided the
communist were being socially and economically disruptive. They would then join together in order to
suppress them and keep the national revolution ongoing. Hence on April 12, Nationalist leader Chiang
commenced an expulsion of the communist in the Shanghai area, leading to the execution and arrest of
hundreds of communist members. This became known as the Shanghai Massacre , enraged, the
communist would attempt to conquer cities such as Changsha, Guangzhou, Nanchang, and Shantou.

Inaccuracy In Genetic Testing
Although researchers and scientists always aim to develop further beneficial advancements, some of
them might be as harmful and still controversial as they are supposed to be beneficial. Genetic
technologies are advancing at a very high rate. For example, genetic testing is widely available
nowadays. It is a test that identifies whether an individual is carrying the gene for a specific disease or
disorder. Through genetic testing, parents can be provided with genetic information about the health of
the fetus by simply taking a blood sample and testing it. However, implications arise as genetic
technology is not very accurate. Although a positive result indicates a higher possibility of carrying
the disease or disorder and a negative result indicates a lower possibility, there is always that other
possibility of a false result (Women s Health Care Physicians). Inaccuracy in genetic testing causes a
controversial question on whether individuals should risk the choices by trusting and basing their life
on nothing but expected results. Even more concern is caused due to rejections of going through
genetic testing and consequently, a possibility of giving birth to a defected baby and not taking benefit
of the technology. Many agree that not taking a genetic test avoids a lot of the emotional issues and
stress that could arise with the results. Others believe that this technology should play a major part of
everyone s life as it allows individuals to be more aware of the

Even though free labor ended in 1863, the Southern culture of degrading and not accepting people of

Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church, nine people were murdered by Dylann Roof. The
church played a vital part in the history of South Carolina, especially in the era of slavery, the nineteen

The Worst of Economic Times in the Great Recession
The Great Recession is possibly the worst economic times since the Great Depression after World War
Two. Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were two financial institutions that played a major role in the
uprising of housing prices. Bundling home loans with different ratings together helped to get a good
deal. There was money to be made with investors. When greed took over and good ratings were given
to people for loans that they could never pay them back, there then was a shift in direction. The
housing market started to fall. Houses were too expensive, and people could not afford it. Foreclosures
were happening all over the country, which lowered the worth of the houses in neighborhoods that
were paid up to date where families still lived. The Federal Government had to step in because the
housing bubble busted, and then financial institutions and banks went bankrupt. Credit scores have a
huge impact when it comes to loans, mortgages, and anything else that requires a credit check. The
higher the credit score means the better chance the loan will get paid back. The lower the credit score
the less of a chance that someone will get a loan because they are more at a risk of not paying it back
and defaulting on the loan. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac recommended the FICO score for use in
mortgage lending in 1995. That would have helped people get a mortgage that may not have before. It
would also help not let people with low credit scores to get a mortgage because they would not be

Abstract
Divorce causes many problems for children and has many implications. Psychological implications
include mental health problems and behavioral problems. Social roles are turned inside out and upside
down. Children are often pulled in many directions. In the United States divorce is very common and
often leaves children confused and without options. Many turn toward violence, crime, drugs, and
isolation. Studies show how adults can reduce the tension for these children. Other ... Show more

Because children of divorce are under a lot of stress and tend to worry about a lot of different things,
they can and some do develop mental health issues that can stick with them through their entire
lifetime. Anxiety is often found in children that are going a divorce. However, child with an anxiety
disorder might always think of the negative side of a situation, or may have dreadful experiences even
in pleasant circumstances. It is important to know that in all cases of anxiety a child will worry too
much about things it is when it becomes a long term problem that it may be a disorder or mental
health issue.
Another mental health problem a child can develop is depression. A child with depression may be sad
more often than not, feel guilty or helpless, and may lose interest in pleasurable things or things they
previously enjoyed. Other mental health issues that may arise from the divorce of the child s parents
are antisocial behavior and hyperactivity (Strohscein, 2012).
Behavioral Effects of Divorce on Children According to Marquart (2006), after a divorce the job of
making sense of the two worlds and the conflicts that arise between them doesn t go away it gets
handed from the adults to the children(p. 215). When living with one parent a child may develop a
sense of confusion when it comes to the family hierarchy because of the loss of one or more of the
leader figures in the household (Kumar, 2011). Loss of one of the family incomes and

cruel and unusual punishments inflicted (The Eighth Amendment 231).When the Eighth amendment
was written, there was an obvious concern for the mistreatment of criminals by the judicial system.
The problem that arose was not the inability of the Supreme Court to understand the meaning between
the words, but the inability to agree with what constitutes Cruel and Unusual . What one Justice
considered not enough, another might feel that the punishment was too severe. McWilliams writes,

Open Carry In Criminal Justice Cases
According to Tribune Review analysis of Department of National Justice Caseload Data, 29.2 percent
of criminal violation citations had weak or insufficient admissible evidence; 25 percent had lack of
evidence of criminal intent; 9.2 percent had no federal offense evident; and 5 percent had insufficient
evidence. Statistics and data typically aren t very intimidating, however these are. These statistics
indicate that law enforcement officers and public officials are taking advantage of people who know
nothing of their own civil rights and liberties. Knowing your rights is vital to avoiding infringement,
and possible false incarceration. Violation of these rights isn t something new, it s been occurring for
many years, and many of your rights today were founded on some of the cases that have dealt with it.
One example, is Miranda vs Arizona, the supreme court ruled detained criminal suspects, prior to
police questioning, must be informed of their constitutional right to an attorney and against self
incrimination (Miranda v Arizona, Alex Mcbride).
It is immensely essential that you are aware of your Constitutional and legal rights. These ... Show

With that right comes open carry, and the legality of it. According to the former President of the NRA,
open carry is legal in 45 U.S. states (Joshua Gillen). Open carry should be permitted in every state, it
is part of the Constitution. Innocent citizens are being stopped by the Police for simply exercising their
right to open carry. Often times citizens are stopped at gunpoint and treated as if they were a criminal.
If we do not continue to exercise this right, harassment will only persist. There are multiple videos on
YouTube showing the Police harassing open carry activists and even disarming them. If you plan to
open carry to exercise your right, know that it is your right, and the police have no right to stop you

  • 3. Path Goal Theory Path Goal Leadeship Theory and Expectancy Theory of Motivation Applications to the Movie Miracle Part 1 I have chosen the movie Miracle as an illustration of an individual, Herb Brooks, fulfilling the parameters of Robert House s Path Goal Theory . There are events that one witnesses throughout one s life that for various reasons leave an indelible imprint on one s heart and soul. The unexpected victory of the US hockey over the heavily favored Russian team in the 1980 Olympic Games was one of those events. I was at a cocktail party and someone turned on the TV and soon the entire group was gathered around the set, small talk forgotten, as what has been described as the greatest sporting event of the 20th century unfolded. ... He tells them that they don t have enough talent to win on talent alone and that the name on the front of their jersey means a lot more than the one on the back. He repeats his message of win or loose, play like champions. Over and over Brooks shouts Again , driving the players to exhaustion. He doesn t stop, ignoring the pleas of his assistants, until the future team Captain, Mike Eruzione, states I play for team USA. Brooks lets them go and a turning point has been reached. They are finally becoming a team , one of destiny with a common purpose. This also is another example of Brooks employing directive leadership to reach a goal despite the effect of a subordinate contingency factor, locus of control. When the team first came together, they were group of highly competitive and independent group of young men hwho identified with their past institutions. Their locus of control was mainly internal and Brooks, with his concept of a cohesive tem, dependent upon another and the coach for direction, gradually moving their locus of control toward a more external variety, I play for team USA . He has imposed his will on the team and he is now able to lead direct them completion of their common goal. A third and clear example of directive leadership occurs during a session in the film room where he instructs the team on the tactics and strategy they will employ to be able to stay ... • 4. Examples Of Humility Of David The book of scriptures depicts humility as a modest perspective of self, a magnified perspective of God, and accommodation to Divine beings will. One of the books of scriptures most compelling characters David, had this sort of humility that added to his enormity as a pioneer. We realize that David was an unassuming pioneer in light of the fact that he was first not ruined by honor, and he would likewise give god the wonderfulness for what he finished. The primary, David was not ruined by honor god favored him with. Samuel anointed David ruler of isreal, however what did David do after such an extraordinary occasion? Ruler saul went to go get david, and he discovered him right back at his old employment shperding the sheep. The anointing oil did not ruin david. Despite the immense criticalness of his anointing, david did a reversal to the fields to look after his sheep with the blessed anointing oil still upon his head. David may have been the future ruler, however he was not above doing the lowliest, dirtiest work in all of isreal. The second, is David would give god the wonderfulness for every one of the things that he fulfilled. The greater part of us would have resolved to wear the protective layer as opposed to concede we weren t capable. Pioneers must know their qualities and shortcomings. • 5. Robber Barons Dbq Essay Throughout the late 19th century, several men such as John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and Cornelius Vanderbilt built empires in railroad construction, coal mining, and the oil industry. These industrial leaders helped the economy flourish and created a leading industrial power in the world. After a while, critics began to question their power and objective. Critics began to call them robber barons for their selfish and corrupted techniques. While they took advantage of careless government regulation and no income tax, they generated huge business that benefited the country. They employed many people and provided critical goods and services. There is a small margin to justify the characterizations of a robber baron for the leading industrialists of the late 19th century, but more as captains of their respective industries. June, 1984, a meeting in Fontainebleau, France, established a Committee on Institutional Affairs under the chairmanship of Irish Senator James Doodge. The committee proposed not only that the EEC work harder toward achieving the already stated goal of abolishing frontiers with the common market, but also that the European Parliament be given more decision making power and the European Community be allowed a greater role in security and defense matters. With her powerhouse voice and a stage presence that puts people double her age to shame, the song is a pop infused sure fire hit for the Sony artist. It s definitely... very anthemic. • 11. White Man s Burden Imperialism Views on Imperialism Imperialism is the extension of a nation s authority by territorial acquisitions or by the establishment of economic and political dominance over other nations (American Heritage Dictionary). Both Imperialists and Anti Imperialists in the late nineteeth century published arguments for or against the justification of Westerners civilizing less advanced peoples. Western societies Imperialist motives were to further their own economic and political standings. Humanitarianism outreach and Social Darwinism were excuses to assert Western dominance. The white man s burden was to send forth the best yet breed the brightest white men to go over to these under performing primitive countries and work hard at converting and modernizing theses evil and immature people Kipling refers to as, Half devil and half child (Mckay et al., 810). Kipling s poem makes a case for imperialism by telling the Europeans it is their moral obligation. It was a burden because the task would it be easy. • 13. The Catholic Church And Nazi Party Essay One is a faith that billions of people have worshiped for hundreds of years, and the other is a regime based on racist theories. Catholicism and Nazism. These two congregations have more in common than anyone could have imagined. Both had principles and theories. History shows that both parties shared hatred and sought out those they disapproved of for questioning, torture and even execution. The medieval Catholic Church and Nazi Party had common motives. However, those in disagreement argue that one is a faith and the other is politics. The actions of the Nazi Party were distinct replications of those of the medieval Roman Catholic Church, which is a reminder to all that any prevailing party, whether it be political or religious, can command a threatening power. Catholicism was a prominent religion for over 1,000 years. Before the Reformation of the 1500s, anyone who was Christian belonged to the Catholic Church any other form of Christianity was considered a denomination. To eliminate denominations, the Church turned to inquisition. The Papal Inquisition began in the late 12th century, when Pope Innocent III sent cardinals to Southern France, where heresy was popularizing. However, the official inauguration is considered 1231, when Pope Gregory IX sent Dominicans to Southern France, Germany, Austria, Lombardy, and Aragon to convict heretics. • 14. Too Much Television On Children And Technology Adults have been worried about their children watching too much TV since, well, forever. For decades, Americans had only one or two TVs in their home. Now a single household might have dozens of them around the home. But the times have changed and in actuality, we are all surrounded by screens nearly all the time from television, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and video games. The American Academy of Pediatrics claims that children spend an average of 7 hours a day on what it terms entertainment media, and that includes TVs, computers, phones, and other electronic devices. The AAP also says that excessive media use can lead to attention problems, school difficulties, sleep and eating disorders, and obesity. Are children spending too much time staring at screens? • 16. The Importance Of Pragmatic Language Processing as Goodman Stuhlmuller (2013) claim that pragmatic language understanding is a social cognition. Perhaps the complex systems involved in pragmatic language understanding are modules that specifically process information about social context, and, it is likely that these interpretation. Perhaps one might start by searching for data suggesting that semantic processing and pragmatic processing involve different parts of the brain. In a series of experiments, Rabagliati, Pylkkanen Marcus (2013) tested linguistic ambiguity resolution in children compared to adults. They found that children processed language differently than adults and that children had trouble integrating contextual cues (Rabagliati et al., 2013, p. 1085). And they suggested that this may be because children s executive function abilities are not fully developed (Rabagliati et al. p. 1085, 2013). This notion is in alignment with previous research by Khanna and Boland (2010) who studied lexical ambiguity resolution in 7 to 10 year old s and in adults. They found that those who had more fully developed executive function abilities also were more sensitive to context in their lexical interpretation (Khanna Boland, 2010). These results are starting to paint a picture that the structures for analyzing and interpreting syntax and semantics may be different than the structures that are involved in a pragmatic interpretation. One might hypothesize that the modules for strict semantic understanding are in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is problematic that almost every mention of this phenomenon goes back to a single study in 1995 that failed to put the issue to rest [6]. Forensically, this research has multiple implications. The presence and level of alcohol in a victim or perpetrator s system has great bearing on their behavior and frame of mind. As a result, the amount of alcohol in a person s blood can serve as a strong piece of evidence. From a sentencing standpoint, the level of legal consequences assigned to an individual is also be dependent on the amount of intoxication detected [1]. With these consequences in mind, it is imperative that the test used to measure ethanol levels is reliable and accurate. If there is a possibility that the enzymatic assays used widely throughout hospitals can be inaccurate under certain conditions, it is necessary that the users and interpreters of those assays know that interference can occur and when it might happen. If markers can be developed to determine when further testing for ethanol should be done, the reliability of the test will be greatly increased. It is a term of endearment and a strong fondness or enthusiasm for something. A stereotypical view of contemporary love exists, which is based principally on gender, social class and race. In Love Actually, Huge Grant, who is the prime minister, falls in love with his secretary; Martine McCutcheon. This contrasts with the stereotype regarding social background, as Huge Grant is of a much higher status than Martine McCutcheon in the film. We did this to see what the pH change would be like for changing concentrations. For mandelic acid, as molarity increased, so did the K SUB a /SUB , but the pH value went down. This shows that as the concentration increased, so did the strength of the acid, which is shown in the K SUB a /SUB value increasing. The more acid there is, the stronger the solution will be, as well as increasing the ability to dissociate. As the concentration increased, the acidity value decreased. This means that the solution became more acidic the more acid preset, the more acidic the solution is. As Goodman Brown travels into the woods one night, he is sees the innermost secrets and desires of the people he once placed upon a pedestal. He sees that humans are evil by nature, and this causes him to lose faith in his fellow man. By viewing the story as an allegory, the journey into the woods is associated with the Puritan concept of justification. The Puritans viewed justification, or the means by which one receives the salvation of Christ, as a psychological journey into the hell (or evil) of the self (Soler). The Apollonian nature of the human seeks to express itself through representations and illusions (such as art), which was regarded as vulgar to the Puritans. The Dionysian seeks to express itself through the performing arts (such as song or dance) (Foster 63 64). This was seen as sinful (one may recall the Salem witch hunt was started when children were caught dancing in the woods). Brown, growing up Puritan, would have had both of these basic human instincts suppressed. This suggests that something must have brought forth the need for these instincts to express themselves. The marriage of Brown and Faith may have brought these issues forward in his unconscious or maybe even conscious mind. Marriage would have qualified Brown to enter the communion of sinners through the sexual nature of the marriage bed. Sexual desires for his wife would have challenged Brown, because of the belief that sex was necessary only for reproduction not pleasure (Male 78). Sexual desires are associated to the Dionysian (Foster 64). To handle the conflict between faith and desire, Brown would have to come to terms with them, thus introducing the Apollonian instinct of individuation. • 34. Analysis Of Alain De Boordon s The Consolations Of Philosophy What is popular is not inherently true. That is what Alain De Botton is trying to show his readers through his work, The Consolations of Philosophy. While there are many beliefs that are well known and shared amongst a vast community, they can always be questioned, and if they can be questioned, there may be an exception. De Botton states that the reason people do not question our societies beliefs and values is fear of rejection by one s peers and the community as a whole; just as Socrates was. However, some things that we, as a community, hold to be true are true and should not be questioned, at times it is more important to stick to one s moral compass rather than question a societies laws. Not wanting to be alienated from society is something we fear as individuals because many people do not want to live their lives alone, being a part of a community can be important to some people and while that can be questioned, it does not mean it is a bad thing. Being able to question society allows for one to think for themselves and find their own beliefs rather than accepting the ones from the environment they were born into. Today, the world is so diverse, with a range of different and even contradictory beliefs on what is true, questioning them is The main argument presented in De Botton s reading is that what is popular is not always true. Every society has a set of beliefs they hold to be true and important. People will act according to these beliefs because it is shown to them throughout their lives that this is the correct way to behave; going against the status quo can result in unpopularity (De Botton, 2000, p9). The fear of rejection and unpopularity is strong within each society, most individuals believe that it is important to be apart of a community, being exiled from one would result in loneliness and most societal conventions, like marriage, revolve around not being alone. Following, is the theory Ethical Egoism, which states that determining right and wrong is in accordance with one s self interest. Also, that it is immoral to act contrary to one s own self interest. Faced with numerous challenges, he battles unbearable pain, atop the impossible situation placed before him. At certain times, he uses his utter cleverness to outsmart the free state sniper. Liam O Flaherty starts the story off with a strong sense of detail, and it immediately emerges the reader into the story and makes them envision being in Dublin at the time of the war. Halfway throughout the story, the sniper gets shot. The author uses sensory details to create an image that makes the reader envision the actual pain the character is battling against. Then taking out his field dressing, he ripped open the packet with his knife. He broke the neck of the iodine bottle and let the bitter fluid drip into the wound. A paroxysm of pain swept through him. He placed the cotton wadding over the wound and wrapped the dressing over it. He tied the ends with his teeth. • 38. Essay about The Voice of the Sea in The Awakening The Voice of the Sea in The Awakening Many different symbols were utilized in Kate Chopin s The Awakening to illustrate the underlying themes and internal conflict of the characters. One constant and re emerging symbol is the sea. The voice of the sea is seductive, never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation. The voice of the sea speaks to the soul. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace (Chopin 25). Edna s recollection of this event allows her to more clearly recognize her internal turmoil. The link between Edna s awakening and the ocean becomes even clearer when after several attempts she finally learns to swim. The first time she ventures out into the ocean alone is the first step toward her independence. She panics when she realizes how far she has gone alone and fears drowning. This incident represents Edna gaining control over her body and becoming more aware of her full potential. The ocean helps her recognize that her body is her own and she awakens to her physical, mental, and emotional capabilities. But that night she was like the little tottering, stumbling, clutching child, who of a sudden realizes its powers, and walks for the first time alone, boldly and with overconfidence. (Chopin 47). In his careers most famous work, The Concept of Law , Hart explains the nature of law in relation to the framework of legal thought while also outlining the essential characteristics of a robust legal system. For Austin, Bentham s disciple, there was a distinct difference between what Law is and what it ought to be, which was highly synonymous of Bentham s work. One must not confuse Austin s work as a briefer, synonymous and more objective version of Bentham s theory as despite the similarities between their theories there were differences too such as Bentham s proposition of Complete law that adequately expresses the will of the legislature by way of codification as opposed to Austin s acceptability of judicial law making. This essay aims at briefly explaining the key components of Hart s theory while constantly comparing and contrasting his propositions with those of his predecessors, Bentham and Austin as the former quintessentially flows from Hart s aim, the one of providing the world of Jurisprudence with an improved analysis of some of the earlier proposed correlation between law, morality and coercion. Genetic technologies are advancing at a very high rate. For example, genetic testing is widely available nowadays. It is a test that identifies whether an individual is carrying the gene for a specific disease or disorder. Through genetic testing, parents can be provided with genetic information about the health of the fetus by simply taking a blood sample and testing it. However, implications arise as genetic technology is not very accurate. Although a positive result indicates a higher possibility of carrying the disease or disorder and a negative result indicates a lower possibility, there is always that other possibility of a false result (Women s Health Care Physicians). Inaccuracy in genetic testing causes a controversial question on whether individuals should risk the choices by trusting and basing their life on nothing but expected results. Even more concern is caused due to rejections of going through genetic testing and consequently, a possibility of giving birth to a defected baby and not taking benefit of the technology. Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were two financial institutions that played a major role in the uprising of housing prices. Bundling home loans with different ratings together helped to get a good deal. There was money to be made with investors. When greed took over and good ratings were given to people for loans that they could never pay them back, there then was a shift in direction. The housing market started to fall. Houses were too expensive, and people could not afford it. Foreclosures were happening all over the country, which lowered the worth of the houses in neighborhoods that were paid up to date where families still lived. The Federal Government had to step in because the housing bubble busted, and then financial institutions and banks went bankrupt. Credit scores have a huge impact when it comes to loans, mortgages, and anything else that requires a credit check. The higher the credit score means the better chance the loan will get paid back. The lower the credit score the less of a chance that someone will get a loan because they are more at a risk of not paying it back and defaulting on the loan.
