Lacan And Foucault And The Gaze
The term the gaze has a general meaning that means to look at something with intent and with
fixed attention. Lacan, Fanon and Foucault all use the gaze in order to refer to various concepts.
Lacan uses the gaze in order to refer to in instance during the mirror stage in which the subject
views itself in the mirror image. The subject then enters an anxious state that comes from the
awareness from knowing that it can be viewed. Lacan argues further that the individual then loses
a level of self sufficiency upon realising that they can be viewed as a visible object (Felluga, 2015).
The gaze has been used within social psychology for the representation of gender and sexual
identity within the media. An example of this is seen when using the ... Show more content on

The awareness of being seen is a consequence of an unlocalizable mechanism in which he feels
photographed in an undesirable manner. This is exactly what Lacan describes as the gaze.
Lacan states that the gaze is everywhere and at the same time, it is nowhere (Bleeker, 2008).
The gaze manifests itself further through its effects rather than through the source. Therefore,
like Fanon, the gaze cannot be located. A difference Between Fanon s gaze and Lacanian gaze is
that Lacan s gaze places emphasis on how an individual views them self therefore it is the gaze
upon one s self, where Fanon s white gaze emphasises how we are affected by other people s gazes,
most crucially how the white gaze is used in order to impose power over black people. Fanon s gaze
is also based entirely on race and how one race grouped is viewed under the gaze of another race
group, which in turn affects their identity and subjectivity, while Lacan s gaze is based on how
you view yourself, for example your social

Anthropological Challenges Raised by New Reproductive...
Discuss some of the anthropological challenges raised by the introduction of NRT s (New
Reproductive Technologies).
In the world we live today, technology plays a very important role in the construction of our
society. By the means of new technologies, new theories, ideologies and perspectives are being
applied to understand social phenomena. Society has gone, and is still going through a new
revolution, because technology has changed the way we look at different sectors in our lives, such
as in the way we communicate, social institutions, different jobs and so on. In this assignment, I am
going to write about new reproductive technologies and the impacts these leave regarding the family
unit, as such technologies can change the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his argument he mentions the debate about artificial insemination, which raised social and legal
problems. The sperm donor might be the husband or just an anonymous man, but whether the
husband or not, the sperm donor was never approved to be the legal or proper father as the
reproduction procedure was not taken place naturally. In fact, it was recommended to be made as
a criminal offence in 1948, by a commission set up by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Therefore
the child born from this procedure has an ambiguous status, or considered illegitimate. It is then
made obvious that the husband of the woman, who raised the child, still has no rights or duties
over him/her. These rights, in some way, belongs to the sperm donor, such that if the mother
registers her husband to be the father of the child, even if he is not, she would be, of course,
committing a crime as only if the husband is genetically the father, would he be considered
legitimate. Some who are against this procedure is particularly against for the reason that the
husband would have not played his role in the procreation of the child, therefore considered as a
bad thing to do. Although such objections were raised, the committee of Warnock still remained in

The Food Truck I Visited
The food truck I visited is called Froyo To Go in Washington D.C. It was a franchised food truck of
Froyo To Go in Crystal city, Virginia. The franchisor Froyo To Go itself opened the store since
the end of 2013 as its food truck ended its operation from May, 2012. Froyo To Go sells freshly
made frozen yogurt with fresh fruittoppings, which were all made from natural and organic
ingredients. The main idea for the owner of the food truck was to deliver the health concept to
people.
Each portion of frozen yogurt was sold for six dollars with two toppings on it. Various fresh fruits
were included in the choices of toppings, such as kiwi, strawberry and banana. The biggest
advantage of Froyo To Go, expressed by the owner, was the healthy and fresh toppings with the
frozen yogurt for the image his product shows is healthier and thus more attractive to customers
than others. The competition is rather low comparing with other food trucks in this area with rare
similar products were sold around.
Before having this food truck, the owner said that the food trucks he saw were all selling heavy
meal such as spicy food from south America, fast food like hot dogs, burgers and kabobs.
One of the biggest reasons why he chose and became one of the franchisee food truck of Froyo To
Go was that the mobility gave him freedom to deliver his concept offering healthy food, more
pervasively. The healthy benefits were also listed outside of the truck telling and attracting people
to purchase.

Right And Stick To It
George Eliot has said, Decide on what you think is right and stick to it. This is a quote I ve been
drawn to since I was in the eighth grade when I was put in a position to choose between my
friends or my future. My friends were bad influences on my life so I knew I had to choose better
for myself. Since I ve made the choice of dropping the negativity out of my life it has changed a
lot for the better. It was said, Decide what is right and stick to it, I agree with this quote because
you should always follow your heart, believe in yourself, and do what s best. They say follow
your heart until it can t lead nomore. I was getting into trouble every week with my friends because

Training Conference For My Assessment
Self Assessment 4
I ve recently been doing training for work and used the training conference for my assessment.
During the training session, it was very apparent when the trainer answered a question in an
irrelevant manner and although she spoke in an upbeat manner, her responses could sometimes
sound impersonal and ambiguous. Since she spoke in the same friendly tone throughout, it was
very hard to read her actual feelings during it. I found that when I needed to ask a question, I
would wait and see if someone else had the same question first and depending on how she was
answering things, I typically did not bother. Once I could tell her true emotions on certain subjects
by the different cues and responses that she gave, I began to ... Show more content on

expert power equally. My next preference was reward and referent power equally also and very
close in rank to my first preference. However, I have no regards for coercive power, scoring the

The Massacre And Abu Ghraib Torture Prison
The My Lai massacre and the Abu Ghraib torture prison were both tragic events in history that
Americans were involved in. The My Lai massacre took place during the Vietnam war in 1968.
Lieutenant William Calley ordered the Charlie Company to proceed with the attack on the village
of My Lai. Their goal was to exterminate the Viet Cong combatants and any one who stood in their
way, but they ended up killing hundreds of innocent unarmed civilians instead. The Abu Ghraib
torture and prison was an american military run prison that was active during the Iraqi war in 2003
until 2006. They captured Iraqi soldiers and tortured them in extremely inhumane and unimaginable
ways. These horrific occurrences made an impact on a countless amount of communities and people
s lives around the world whether they had connections to the incidents or not, which is why this
issue is such an important matter to discuss. The concepts that will be discussed in this essay are
the similarities between the events of the My Lai massacreand Abu Ghraib prison, the major
difference between the two, considering who was truly responsible for the events at the Abu
Ghraib prison, discussing whether or not the lessons of My Lai were learnt, and the steps to take to
insure nothing alike these events would ever take place in the world again. There are several
similarities that are comparable between the My Lai Massacre and the Abu Ghraib prison torture.
Both incidents were extremely devastating events that

Knights Research Paper
According to the urban dictionary a knight is a man who served his sovereign or lord as a
mounted soldier in armor . In other words a professional killer. Even though we view Knights as
professional warriors, we failed to see that they were much more than a warrior. Knights were not
merely professional warriors: knighthood includes guidelines that one must follow: the notion of
social status, political power, legal classification, and cultural expressions of knightly identity
bravery, honor, loyalty, and service to a woman. Knights are the emblematic warriors of the
European Middle Ages. (Knights: In History and Legend, pg. 15) Knights first surfaced between
the years of 1000 1350 after the fall of the Roman Empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire
also known as The Medieval Period, Europe was dominated by a feudal system, which consisted of
God being the supreme ruler, then a King being the appointed ruler of... Show more content on

Not to mention that the armor was extremely expensive. Knights in early Middle Ages, using

or they faced the risk of an ill fitting suit of armor hampering them in battle. Other than using
leather for armor a Knights armor consisted of a complex series of garments, chain mail, and iron
plate. Chain mail , small, interwoven steel rings , was very popular among blacksmiths and
armorers because it was easy to do, cheaper than other armor, and it could effectively deflect
weapons. But soon blacksmiths learned how to do plated armor and it was much better in certain

The Crucible And 12 Angry Men Analysis
The Crucible and Twelve Angry Men (1957 film) share many similarities between them,
particularly in the themes they convey throughout the texts. Justice and prejudice are the main
ideas presented in both texts, however the setting and outcomes differ significantly between the
two, providing a different insight in each text. Both authors, Miller and Lumet, present relevant
issues in the context of the 1950s that both texts were written. The similar social condition of
America that the two texts were published in is a likely factor as to why the two texts have
similar motifs presented throughout. Both The Crucible and Twelve Angry Men (1957 film) are
about justice. The two texts feature important scenes involving a trial where the fate of a
character s life rests in the hands of other people. However, the two texts have very different
final outcomes. In both texts, the main protagonists argue against the majority, despite the
backlash that they receive. Proctor speaks out in The Crucible after learning about the lies that
Abigail and her friends are telling that have caused the imprisonment of members of the town
and are even threatening their lives. Proctor takes a considerable risk by arguing against the
witchcraft, especially in the Puritan society where religion is how the town is governed. His
decision inevitably backfires on him and begins the series of events that lead to his execution. On
the other hand, Juror #8 in Twelve Angry Men goes against the majority as he sees the boys poor
upbringing, his less than fair state appointed defence attorney and the jury s almost immediate
unanimous decision to convict him, unjust and believes he deserves a better chance. Unlike
Proctor, Juror #8 speaking out against the other men results in justice for the accused who walks
away with his life. Justice in the two texts is represented considerably differently to each other. In
The Crucible it is evident that Abigail and her friends are in the wrong, condemning people to be
death by lying and accusing the town members of Witchcraft, and therefore Proctor attempting to
expose them for their dishonesty and bring justice to those who had been wrongfully accused,
which included his wife, was a brave and noble thing to

Hildegard Von Bingen Vision
In the 2009 film, Vision: The Life of Hildegard von Bingen, the writer/director Margarethe von
Trotta puts focus on Hildegard s journey to serve the Lord as best she can, in a time where the
church is run by powerful men, and where the Roman Catholic Church is focused on
centralizing the church and government though the first crusades. Hildegard (Barbara Sukowa)
changes the history of the church by transcribing her visions into text and by breaking away
from her cloister to start her own monasteries. As a visionary, she sees God through a different
lens and thinks of him not to be feared, but to be celebrated. She believes his gifts will heal and
guide, so long as one s heart is pure and humble. Margarethe von Trotta does a great job of
showing the audience that Hildegard s view of God is not the same as the masses, some of
which viewed God as a punisher that should be feared. As the film opened, the audience was
exposed to the apocalyptic thinking of members of the church. The first scene of the movie
shows a gathering of people in a place of worship, waiting out the end of the world. This
congregation is surprised to wake up to another day. This was a common theme in earlier
Christianity, and a view that later in the movie, we realize Hildegard von Bingen didn t share. A
similar scene in terms of how one viewed God, was that of self flagellation early on in the movie.
With the self harming of one s body for sacrifice to God, to suffer as Jesus did, it gives the

Macroeconomic Performance Indicator Of The Netherlands
2. Macroeconomic Performance ( 2010 2015)
The Macroeconomic performance indicator analyzed in the report includes GDP growth, inflation,
unemployment and Fiscal and monetary budget balances.
The Netherlands is the 6th largest economy in the Euro Area and it is a crucial transportation hub in
Europe. The Netherlands economy depends on foreign trade heavily both exports and imports
alike. Its exports account for 83 percent of the GDP and its imports for 72 percent. The GDP
Country Rank of the Dutch is 25/193(2014).
The weightage of each component of the GDP is as follows: a) Household consumption (45
percent), b) Government expense (26 percent) c) Gross fixed capital formation (18 percent), d) Net
trade (11 percent)
By observation of the last 2 decades, Netherlands has an averaged GDP growth of 0.53% between
1988 and 2015, all time high: 1.80% (Q1 1999) and all time low: 3.30% (Q1 2009).
This year, the Dutch economy has progressed by only 0.1 percent on quarter in the three months to
September 2015. It has underperformed and fallen short of the market expectations by 0.3%
growth. Investment has slowed down and consumption has reached a stagnation(flat) with only
government expenditure acting as the key growth factor after showing zero growth in the last
quarter.Imports have risen at a pace of 1.1% whereas exports only by 0.7%, thus, the net demand
for external sources has dragged down the pace of growth.

What I Learned About Anthropology And Learned Valuable...
I had the pleasure of interviewing two accomplished and fascinating applied anthropologists. I
chose these two anthropologists not only because Dr. Wallace recommended them, but also
because they work in my fields of interest. The first interview I conducted was anthropologist Dr.
Jason Lind, he is currently a qualitative health researcher for the prestigious Veterans Association.
The second interview I had was with anthropologist Dr. Kathryn Kozaitis, she is currently a
professor and chair at Georgia State University. Throughout the process of both interviews Dr.
Jason Lind and Dr. Kathryn Kozaitis give me an inside look at applied anthropologyand provide me
with advice as I continue my college career. Both interviews helped me gain a better
understanding of applied anthropology and learned valuable lessons. I asked both anthropologists
the same questions because I wanted to see if there were any major differences in their answers.
Surprisingly, they both had similar answers to most of the questions. I asked them questions about
the differences between applied and non applied research in anthropology, their job satisfaction,
background data, ethical issues, key skills for an anthropologist, and their recommendations for me
and others who want to pursue a career as an anthropologist. I found it especially interesting that
both Dr. Lind and Dr. Kozaitis come from different backgrounds but are both united by the same
principles and share a lot of the same interests.

A Theory Of Justice John Rawls Analysis
Rawls: A Theory Of Justice John Rawls was an influential moral and political thinker in 20th
century philosophy. He was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, studied at Princeton and
Oxford, and worked at MIT, Cornell, and finally Harvard where he taught for over thirty years.
Two of his younger brothers contracted deadly diseases from him (diphtheria and pneumonia) and
died. Surprisingly, Rawls remained a Christian. He wrote an intensely religious senior thesis in
college and even considered becoming a priest in the Episcopal Church. However, his time in
WWII as an infantryman in the Pacific was too much for his conviction when he witnessed horrible
deaths and learned of the Holocaust, and he lost his faith. The Vietnam war, which he... Show more

For example, making more money is only acceptable if there is a social good attached to it, like
being a doctor so that everyone profits. The idea is that people with no prior self knowledge
would choose a society that has the least amount of inequality in it just in case the poorest turns
out to be them. Rawls goes on to expand on the principles of justice that he proposes. In general
he says that these two principles apply to the basic structure of society and are meant to regulate
the distribution of advantages and disadvantages. They are meant to make sure that rights and
duties are equally distributed. He says, the basic liberties of citizens are, roughly speaking,
political liberty (the right to vote and to be eligible for public office) together with freedom of
speech and assembly; liberty of conscience and freedom of thought, freedom of the person along
with the right to hold (personal) property; and freedom from arbitrary arrest and seizure as
defined by the concept of the rule of law. He says that everyone should have the same amount of
these liberties, since citizens of a just society are to have the same basic rights. Rawls does clarify
the ordering of his principles as well, by explaining that the first principle can not be compensated
for by greater social or economic advantages, but that the distribution of wealth and income must be
consistent with

Analysis On Drugs And Legalization
Drugs and Legalization
Since early on man has been interested in the consumption of substances that altered the mind or
ones feeling. The consumption of substances can be broken down into legal and illegal substances.
The question is, who are we to label certain substances illegal and prohibit others from using them
by creating penalties for their use?
If the importation, sale and use of drugs were legal, the open competition would eliminate the
profitability of drug dealing. Without the economic incentive to commit violent crimes, the violence
of drug dealing would be dramatically reduced. In addition to the elimination of the economic
incentive, the health risk factor would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since it is the Americans right to privacy, personal choice, and individual freedom.
Marijuana, in addition to not being a dangerous drug, has been documented to have practical
medical purposes and environmental purposes. The legalization of marijuana, a drug that the
criminalization of is so impossible to enforce, would not only not harm society, but could actually
benefit it. The question then becomes, how should legalization be approached? In addition to
legalization, the government must also educate people of the affects.
Legalizing drugs would allow them to be available to those who would benefit from their
medical use and those who would like to use them as recreational drugs much like alcohol and
tobacco are. Research would also be encouraged as scientists could search for new and practical
uses of drugs. There are many wonderful uses of drugs that have not yet been identified or
perfected because of the strict laws against them. With expanded research, we could discover these
new possibilities.
Of course, some restrictions would have to be set. Likely, an age restriction would have to be
adopted. Restricting the use of drugs to adults only, and educating the youth of the potential dangers
should help curb

The Red Badge Of Courage Character Analysis
The Red Badge of Courage is a psychological or war novel written by Stephen Crane. Set during
the Civil War, it is a fictional portrayal of the Battle of Chancellorsville, which was fought in
1863. This novel focuses on the psychology of a single soldier. Three main characters are
introduced within the first chapter, Henry, Jim, and Wilson. Crane refers to Henry as the young
soldier(33) and the youth (4) throughout the novel. He believes in time honored virtues such as
courage and honor and sentimentalizes the visualization of dying in battle. Furthermore, because he
is young, Henry has not experienced enough to test these conceptions. Because of this, Henry s
most passionate notions are based on fantasies, making him seem vain and self centered. Jim and
Henry contrast clearly within the opening pages of the novel. He is strong and self reliant and does
not romanticize warin the manner that Henry does. Jim goes through his days efficiently and with
few hardships.
He prefers to do what duty requires of him and finds a simple pleasure in doing so. Jim remains
prominently steady throughout the novel, but Wilson undergoes a vivid change. At first, Wilson is
loud, ignorant, and opinionated. Crane refers to him as the loud soldier (13). His transformation
becomes clear comparatively quickly. After a tense battle, Wilson takes on the role of Henry s
caretaker. In addition, he displays his generosity by insisting that Henry takes his only blanket. The

Spanish Evangelization
The act of evangelization by the Spanish in Colonial Latin America cannot be seen as just that,
evangelization, but as an act of expanding their territories. Though some of the Spanish did have
true intentions of saving the natives, who were seen as heathens for their evil practices, most of
them had far more lucrative reasons for evangelizing and colonizing the New World. The
conquistadores came to the New World mainly to expand their personal wealth, which in Spain
many did not have much of. Those who sought to evangelize the natives took advantage of the
benefits that came from tagging along with the conquistadores; sponsorship, protection, etc. Both,
missionaries and conquistadores had commonalities such as country of origin (mostly... Show more

keeping slaves was a commodity that priests and other members of the Catholic Church could not

continual succession, from as early as 32 AD until present day, has seen a total of 265 popes (The
List of Popes) hold the title of Vicar of Christ, and this unbroken chain of leadership stands as a
testament to the enduring significance of the papacy throughout the development of western
civilization. Long based in the Roman enclave now known as Vatican City, the papacy has been
both a transformative political power on the world stage, and a religious body transformed by the
inexorable pull of progress. With more than 77 million individuals identifying themselves as
Catholics around the world as of 2011, the pope holds authority over a church with a larger
population than France, the United Kingdom or Italy (CARA Catholic Poll). The current pope,
Benedict XVI, was elected in 2005 and has assumed the roles associated with the modern papacy,
namely the appointment of bishops and cardinals, the management of the Church s administrative
affairs, convening ecumenical councils to arbitrate

Civil Rights Heroes By Jonathan Kozol
The names Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Langston Hughes, Jackie Robinson, Fannie Lou
Hamer and Thurgood Marshall are all civil rights heroes, not to be forgotten. However, Jonathan
Kozol reveals that the schools he has had experience with that are named after these civil rights
champions are actually dishonoring the dead. Professor Gary Orfield indicates that schools that
are comprised mostly of minority students, less than 1% white, are essentially apartheid schools.
There is a reciprocal action, To give up on integration....requires us to consciously and deliberately
accept segregation (Orfield and Eaton, 20). It is noted that some of the reasons New York has this
problem is due to government enforced school boundaries, housing segregation and non enforced
fair housing laws. Thus, the schools are named after the heroes in a show of respect and honor, yet
their segregation is a dishonor to the namesakes. The racial isolation of the students leaves them
feeling hidden, unwanted and inferior. This is a dishonor to those students and the people who
fought so persistently for equal opportunities.
Among other injustices, some schools in the South Bronx and other areas do not have basic
essentials needed to conduct a safe environment ripe for learning. The apartheid schools are unsafe
and underfunded, lacking enough rooms, chairs, play areas, libraries and enriching programs such
as art and music. The funding disparity is saddening; with the Board of Education

The Peace Restaurant of the Haw-Some Hickory
At first glance, you wouldn t think much of this small town, country style restaurant, tucked up in
the corner of a run out plaza. Yet as you draw nearer to this establishment, you seem to hear a
quiet, but subtle sound of country music coming from inside. Upon entering you can t help but
notice the pictures of all the smiling faces that are along the walls. This is a placethat welcomes
families and the whole community. Promptly before you have the chance to get too
comfortable, you are greeted and then seated. Now, seated, you have the task of looking over
the menu and all of its possible choices. Without fail, our waitress comes over, introduces herself,
and asks if we would like something to drink to start us off. Viewing the possible choices, which
include some Pepsi products, specialty sodas, and their famous strawberry lemonade. Carefully
and cautiously, I pick their strawberry lemonade as does my friend. Taking a second look at the
menu, it s plain to see that it has some wonderful sounding food. As custom, I tend to brag about
places I have been before and things that I have eaten. On this such occasion, I talked up a big
game about the Fried Mac N Cheese. I told my friend Tyler that I was AMAZING! So I took the
liberty and ordered that as an appetizer to share. At this point, our kind waitress had left us with
our drinks and appetizer orders. Now, having a moment to glance around at the place for a better

Piggy is clearly a clever boy, but he is a victim too. How does the writer use him in the novel?
Piggy from the start of the novel is portrayed as someone the boys can bully and ridicule which
makes him a victim. He confides in Ralph that he is sensitive about his appearance (he is
overweight) and the fact he has to wear glasses. I don t care what [you] call me so long as . . . [it

He scornfully sees the other boys Acting like a crowd of kids . Later on , Piggy has the idea of
creating a sundial to keep track of time. Piggy strives to maintain a hold on the old world they

point events are interrupted as Jack has let the fire go out and a ship was passing. Piggy
supports Ralph in telling Jack off for his negligence and Jack hits Piggy in the face smashing
one of the lenses of his glasses, making it difficult for Piggy to see clearly. This seems to cement
the relationship between Ralph and Piggy and leads to Piggy becoming a threat and a person to
hate for Jack. He refuses to share the meat from the pig with Piggy , who is finally given some
by Simon. From this point on Piggy is now firmly in Jack s sights to be punished and bullied. He
is always telling him to shut up. The division between Ralph and Jack widens as he is concerned
only with hunting. Piggy is now dependant on Ralph as he cant see properly but similarly Ralph
is becoming dependant on Piggy for support as law and order is breaking down and Jack leaves
the group to set up his rival tribe taking with him by intimidation the choir and leaving Ralph and

Library Interview Analysis
Introduction I started the process of seeking an interview about two weeks before the assignment
was do. I had email several places and the response was almost the same for them all. They could
only meet with me after the assignment was due. I then remember a small library in the city that I
reside in and that was the Harrison Township Public Library.
The Interview The interview was held Thursday, March 23, 2017 at the Harrison Township Public
library. I arrived 15 minutes before 11:00 A.M. and did last minute question changes before
walking into the library. The library is quite small (perhaps 2000 square feet in total size). I talk to
the librarian on staff and she directed me to the main office area that was at one point a storage
closest. That was when I meet with the Director of the Harrison Township Public Library, Dan
Hutchins. I started off the interview asking him what he was responsible for managing. He was in

Things are getting tougher everyday (2017) for librarians and that to make a living as a librarian
(which in his eyes is working fulltime) you have to move where the jobs are... and you have to
love what you do... (2017). His reasoning is that because it s getting harder, you have to love it to
keep pushing on for that living to be a possibility. He also said that networking is also a very big
key that I need to start as soon as possible. Get your name and accomplishments out there and to
make contacts (2017) not just for networking (which is important) but for day to day advice.
Conclusion
Overall, I learned much with my time with the Director of the Harrison Public Library, Dan
Hutchins. He was a man on integrity and compassion for his field and gave me important
insights on how it could be for me one day as a manager or leader in the librarian field. It s a tough
world and this interview move me one step closer to facing it head

Similarities Between English American And French Revolutions
The future of a country is somewhat contrasted through distinguished moments in history, the
English, American and French revolutions proved this theory by shaping the countries into the
powerhouses they are today, all of which have some similarities in the general causes that lead to
the countries rebelling and eventually creating a new political and social order. The first of the
three, the English Great Rebellion was the result of the monarchy and its following fighting the
wishes of parliament throughout the 1640 s. The cause originated from James I who believed in
the divine right of kings, basically casting out the parliament involvement, even though the two
were actually supposed to act as a balanced polity . James I and the parliament disagreed on many
things, but... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

extended through to his son s time in the monarchy, with Charles I sharing the same religious
beliefs as his father. This added hostility to the situation with parliament and also with Puritans,
forcing thousands to relocate to the land of America. As England eventually slipped into a civil
war, fighting over the right of religious practices in court, the people of Ireland and Scotland started

Langston Hughes Relationship In Relationships
Relationships, Love, Support, or Dependency?
The relationship between women and men might be complicated for some while sometimes even a
really loving relationship cannot survive if people chose their personal longing as a priority.
Women and men fight in relationships; fight for more independence, fight to prove their worthiness
and keep forgetting that love is not a fight but a mutual support. Both men and women have
strengths and skills that are important for a relationship and growth. We need to ensure that both
partners play an important role in a relationship so that it can benefit both parties and the
relationship. James Mercer Langston Hughes also was known as Langston Hughes, is an American
writer who was an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance and made the African American
experience the subject of his writings, which ranged from poetry and plays to novels and
newspaper columns. That same year, he received the Witter Bynner Undergraduate Poetry
Award, and he published The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain in The Nation, a manifesto
in which he called for a confident, uniquely black literature: We younger Negro artists who create
now intend to express our individual dark skinned selves without fear or shame. By the time
Hughes received his degree in 1929, he had helped launch the influential magazine Fire!!, in 1926,
and he had also published a second collection of poetry, Fine Clothes to the Jew, which was
criticized by some for its title and for its

Neoclassical And Romantic Styles Of Art
The Neoclassical and Romanticism periods in the arts, gave way to new styles of painting. By this
time, the patrons commissioning art varied from the previous periods. Added to the list was the
Monarchy who also commissioned art, and made it public for all to see. Although, not everyone
approved of their classism, and their riches, while their subjects had very little on. I will discuss the
effect the French Revolutionhad on both styles of art, Neoclassical and Romanticismand show how
the same subject was viewed very differently by the artists in favor of the French Revolution, and
by the artist opposed to it, and the Monarchy.
For the Neoclassical style, I selected Jacques Louis David s Napoleon Crossing the Alps from
1801. It was hard not to select one of David s unofficial tributes to Napoleon, as he was a big fan.
I selected Napoleons Crossing the Alps specifically, because it is a prime example of how David
used his painting skills to convey a selective message, in this case, that Napoleon was a great
heroic General. As Ben Pollitt highlights, The fact that Napoleon did not actually lead his troops
over the Alps but followed a couple of days after them, travelling on a narrow path on the back of a
mule is not the point! (Pollitt via khanacademy.org, n.d.). In other words, David totally painted a
delusional story, contrary to what actually happened. Yet, David painted a taller, stronger looking
Napoleon, riding on a beautiful and muscular horse. The

Wide Sargasso Se The Intersection Of English And British...
Jean Rhys s novel Wide Sargasso Sea centers on the intersection of English and British colonial
cultures through the union of Rochester and Antoinette Cosway. Rochester represents patriarchal
and imperialist Victorian values, which Mary Lou Emery suggests thrive in part on distinctions
between...legitimate and illegitimate sexuality, madness and reason, primitive and civilized
behavior, [and] fiction and fact (428). Antoinette threatens these supposedly objective distinctions in
her emotional ( Afraid of what? ... Of nothing, of everything! (Rhys 45)) and intellectual ( Not
slaves. Something must have happened a long time ago. Nobody remembers now. (Rhys 39))
uncertainty, which reflect the ambivalence of colonial, specifically black, culture towards English
reason and fact. Antoinette s most glaring dualities, however, appear in her subversion of racial and
sexual conventions, and Rochester ultimately perceives her as mad because these ambiguous
identities confuse the essentialist binary systems that patriarchal and imperialist ideologies derive
from, and with them his understanding of reality. The most obvious binary in Wide Sargasso Sea
is the black/white racial binary. Imperialism holds raceto be one dimensional and static, and
distinguishes only between two racial groups: white English colonists and black former slaves. This
simplistic racial dichotomy cannot account for the multi faceted reality of racein the West Indies,
however, and is problematized when

The Downfall Of Affirmative Action
Downfall of Affirmative Action Many colleges in United States are composed of an ethnically
diverse student body. One of the reasons why the student body is full of diversity is because of
the Affirmative Action. It is the policy that gives a special incentives to minorities and women to
help promote diversity in school. Though it is a great idea to promote diversity in every college in
United States, it is also a bad idea to continue this system. Many A students who are not minorities
tend to get the same treatment as the B students who are minorities. Although accepted into school,
these students who barely met the minimum criteria may have a tougher time at school because
they may not be able to keep up with the pace of the classes since the schools have high
expectations of its students. Furthermore, students who have worked hard to get good grades might
be overlooked because the students who have lower grades will be accepted simply to fulfill the
quota. Although promoting affirmative actionis a great idea to seek diversity through different
views from many different ethnicities, it will also take away people s hard work, as well as
producing more drop out students since they cannot keep up with what the university is expecting
from them. Therefore, it is not morally justifiable or socially beneficial for the students since they
may have a lower chance of succeeding at school. Affirmative action will treat the majority students
the same way as the minority

PERSONAL HISTORY
The narrator in this story is a 1. Person narrator and the story is therefore told from the narrator s
point of view. An example of the first person narrative is already in the opening line: Yes I m
from New York I say shifting my drink to my other hand. This in medias res opening throws us
right into the story without telling when or where we are. It informs us that the narrator is from
New York, and indicates that she isn t there at the moment. The setting of this dialogue is probably

Another pattern in the family s behavior is all the moving. The great grandparents moved to NY
from Great Britain. Their son and daughter in law moves out of NYC and the narrator s parents
had a baby in a hospital in New York and raised it on the Upper West Side. Then they moved out of
the city, and later the narrator moves to NY.
Througout the story we hear about this elegant lifestyle with a state room and a carriage, tea
served by uniformed maids, elegant silk slip gowns. The narrator is the only one in the family
that isn t living the glamorous life in NY. She is living in a flat with cockroaches and a mattress

Therefore I think this story is mainly about concepts of time, and about the evolution of a family
and a city. We start off with this traditional, wealthy, British family who is welcomed to the new
world with a carriage and tea in a large room. Their child is wearing sailor s outfits from a
gentlemen s outfitter and there are fruit sellers and dairymaids in the streets every morning. They

Life Of A Blessed And Faithful Man By J. Gerald Janzen Essay
The Book of Job dives into the life of a blessed and faithful man in which his life takes an
unsuspecting turn. From the loss of property and loved ones, to only be accused of wickedness
by friends as the explanation of this calamity that has befallen Job. Author J. Gerald Janzen,
whose personal struggle has opened a corridor that creates a connection with the life of Job takes
us on a walk with Job through his journey from prosperity, to loss and bitterness then into the
presence of God. At the Scent of Water will open our mind to the possibility of hope and grace to
anyone who has gone through sufferingin the past or is going through times of difficulty in the
presence.
The author uses distancing strategy to enable the engagement of the exilic and postexilic
community. To highlight the two biblical paradigms for divine human relationship, clan personal
and cosmic political associated to Abraham and Moses that is evident the history of Israel. The text
also plays out the argument between Job and friends within the Mosaic paradigm. The text also
identifies the elements of the ancestral paradigm as reflected in the introduction of the name and
themes of Shadday. We also see the paradigm of clan religion is primary in the book of job. With
references to the two domains of human experience, the familial and the political and the
associated models of religious understanding come together in Job s oath to give healing and ease
of pain. The text also provides a reflection on

Bhopal Ethics
The Bhopal gas leak was a terrible tragedy in which thousands of helpless civilians were killed
and hundreds of thousands were injured as they slept. Determining who was at fault and,
consequently, who should compensate the victims and clean up the site are questions that have
plagued the affected parties, my Rotman classmates and the world at large for over 25 years. The
analysis to follow, in attempting to present the roles and responsibilities of each major player, will
demonstrate the incredible difficulty involved in assigning conclusive responsibility for the
tragedy. This will be followed by my personal reflections on the incident in which I present an
additional culprit to those discussed in class. Union Carbide Corporation (US):... Show more content

Secondly, the Government neglected the densely populated shanty town that had grown up near
the plant on land deeded from local officials. Its residents were the first and main victims of the
poisonous gas. Still, many will argue that a cost benefit analysis made creating jobs and
accessible pesticide for a poor and hungry region the proper priority. While many were ultimately
harmed by the leak, how many more had benefitted from the poverty alleviating jobs and hunger
alleviating crops? Here again we find valid points and counter points, leaving us no closer to
assigning conclusive blame and responsibility for the tragedy. Dow Chemical: While Dow
certainly protected itself in the purchase agreement from a legal standpoint, there are those that
suggest the proper ethical action is for Dow to assume responsibility for any outstanding clean up
and compensation. While this may innately feel like the right thing to do, the counterpoint that
Dow had nothing to do with the incident and should not be punished after paying fair market
value for Union Carbide is also valid. Personal Reflection: Analyzing the conduct of the major
parties has not produced any conclusive allocation of responsibility. It is clear that each party
deserves significant blame but no party deserves total blame. There is, however, an overlooked
culprit that I believe deserves the bulk of the blame: the expectations market that has hijacked the
decision making of US corporations(1).

Kotkin There s No Place Like Home Summary
In the essay There s No Place Like Home, Joel Kotkin describes the new increasingly popular
trend of localism . Localism is the idea that adults and children become accustomed to where they
are living and are more prompted to stay there. The basis of his premise states the longer people
stay in their homes and communities, the more they identify with those places (490). The comfort
and familiarity people feel in their community leads local businesses and institutions to survive and
prosper. The cause of new localism is primarily based on age, suburbanization, the Internet, and an
increased centralization of family life. According to Kotkin, family and technology are two key
factors working against nomadism (491). With ongoing economic... Show more content on

The majority of Americans still live in small suburban towns instead of metropolitan areas. While
a person can be subject to a specific community, they may not feel a part of a bigger society. On a
local level, people may feel pride in their community, but are less connected to people around them.
This connects back with Lovenhiem s observation that many of his neighbors do not closely
associate with one another. He observed that his neighbors do not willing interact with each other,
even though they all tied to a specific locality. While Lovenhiem found that it is possible to reunite
these neighborhood ties, it is up to the individual to make the decision of whether or not they wish

them to explore and connect how and why things happen, and help them to build awareness towards

what was learnt and with the world around them.
Growing a garden
The black bean seeds were planted in a pot, which contained soil from the backyard vegetable
garden and cow manure. The pot was placed outside, in the shade of other plants in the backyard.
By day eight the seeds had not germinated; therefore the pot was moved where it would get more
than six hours of direct sunlight a day, which was the suggested amount required (Grow This,
2016, para. 3). With enough sunlight and the soil being watered each day the seeds germinated
by day sixteen. The growth then became very rapid; however, there were signs of bugs eating
the leaves due to the holes that could be seen. A bug spray was applied to the plant in the hope
that the plant will survive. This spray was used twice a week and helped keep the bugs away and
allowed the leaves to continue to grow.
The black bean plant was exposed to a hot and dry Summer. By planting the black bean in a pot, it
meant that shade could be applied when the harsh weather was due to arrive (Tuton, 2010, para. 3).
The pot was relocated on days which would damage the growth of the plant and then returned to the
previous location when the weather cooled down.
The stems of the black bean plant measured in at 15 centimetres and sticks were added to help with
the growth. However,

Analysis Of On Death Row, But Is He Innocent
In On Death Row, but Is He Innocent? Nicholas Kristof explores the position that the evidence
that convicted Kevin Cooper, an inmate on death row in San Quentin State Prison, may be
unreliable. In 1983, a California professor drove to his neighbor s house to pick up his eleven

Amongst the blood was the bodies of his neighbor s family and the lifeless body of his son.
Additionally, the professor Joshua Ryen who was stabbed multiple times, but still clinging to life.
Kristof highlights the overwhelming evidence of policetampering with evidence that sent Kevin
Cooper to death row. Additionally, Kristof suggests evidence as to Cooper s innocence was not
given proper scrutiny. Therefore, Kristof alleges Cooper s case, particularly the evidence, should be

California, Jerry Brown should little interest in the case, as Governor he is currently reviewing the

The fallacy of irrelevance, or ignoratio elenchi, is an argument purporting to establish a particular
conclusion, but is instead directed to proving another conclusion. Kristof potentially frames the
fallacy of ignoratio elenchi even from the title: On Death Row, but Is He Innocent? On the one

  • 2. Lacan And Foucault And The Gaze The term the gaze has a general meaning that means to look at something with intent and with fixed attention. Lacan, Fanon and Foucault all use the gaze in order to refer to various concepts. Lacan uses the gaze in order to refer to in instance during the mirror stage in which the subject views itself in the mirror image. The subject then enters an anxious state that comes from the awareness from knowing that it can be viewed. Lacan argues further that the individual then loses a level of self sufficiency upon realising that they can be viewed as a visible object (Felluga, 2015). The gaze has been used within social psychology for the representation of gender and sexual identity within the media. An example of this is seen when using the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The awareness of being seen is a consequence of an unlocalizable mechanism in which he feels photographed in an undesirable manner. This is exactly what Lacan describes as the gaze. Lacan states that the gaze is everywhere and at the same time, it is nowhere (Bleeker, 2008). The gaze manifests itself further through its effects rather than through the source. Therefore, like Fanon, the gaze cannot be located. A difference Between Fanon s gaze and Lacanian gaze is that Lacan s gaze places emphasis on how an individual views them self therefore it is the gaze upon one s self, where Fanon s white gaze emphasises how we are affected by other people s gazes, most crucially how the white gaze is used in order to impose power over black people. Fanon s gaze is also based entirely on race and how one race grouped is viewed under the gaze of another race group, which in turn affects their identity and subjectivity, while Lacan s gaze is based on how you view yourself, for example your social ... • 3. Anthropological Challenges Raised by New Reproductive... Discuss some of the anthropological challenges raised by the introduction of NRT s (New Reproductive Technologies). In the world we live today, technology plays a very important role in the construction of our society. By the means of new technologies, new theories, ideologies and perspectives are being applied to understand social phenomena. Society has gone, and is still going through a new revolution, because technology has changed the way we look at different sectors in our lives, such as in the way we communicate, social institutions, different jobs and so on. In this assignment, I am going to write about new reproductive technologies and the impacts these leave regarding the family unit, as such technologies can change the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his argument he mentions the debate about artificial insemination, which raised social and legal problems. The sperm donor might be the husband or just an anonymous man, but whether the husband or not, the sperm donor was never approved to be the legal or proper father as the reproduction procedure was not taken place naturally. In fact, it was recommended to be made as a criminal offence in 1948, by a commission set up by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Therefore the child born from this procedure has an ambiguous status, or considered illegitimate. It is then made obvious that the husband of the woman, who raised the child, still has no rights or duties over him/her. These rights, in some way, belongs to the sperm donor, such that if the mother registers her husband to be the father of the child, even if he is not, she would be, of course, committing a crime as only if the husband is genetically the father, would he be considered legitimate. Some who are against this procedure is particularly against for the reason that the husband would have not played his role in the procreation of the child, therefore considered as a bad thing to do. • 4. The Food Truck I Visited The food truck I visited is called Froyo To Go in Washington D.C. It was a franchised food truck of Froyo To Go in Crystal city, Virginia. The franchisor Froyo To Go itself opened the store since the end of 2013 as its food truck ended its operation from May, 2012. Froyo To Go sells freshly made frozen yogurt with fresh fruittoppings, which were all made from natural and organic ingredients. The main idea for the owner of the food truck was to deliver the health concept to people. Each portion of frozen yogurt was sold for six dollars with two toppings on it. Various fresh fruits were included in the choices of toppings, such as kiwi, strawberry and banana. The biggest advantage of Froyo To Go, expressed by the owner, was the healthy and fresh toppings with the frozen yogurt for the image his product shows is healthier and thus more attractive to customers than others. The competition is rather low comparing with other food trucks in this area with rare similar products were sold around. Before having this food truck, the owner said that the food trucks he saw were all selling heavy meal such as spicy food from south America, fast food like hot dogs, burgers and kabobs. One of the biggest reasons why he chose and became one of the franchisee food truck of Froyo To Go was that the mobility gave him freedom to deliver his concept offering healthy food, more pervasively. The healthy benefits were also listed outside of the truck telling and attracting people to purchase. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the training session, it was very apparent when the trainer answered a question in an irrelevant manner and although she spoke in an upbeat manner, her responses could sometimes sound impersonal and ambiguous. Since she spoke in the same friendly tone throughout, it was very hard to read her actual feelings during it. I found that when I needed to ask a question, I would wait and see if someone else had the same question first and depending on how she was answering things, I typically did not bother. The My Lai massacre took place during the Vietnam war in 1968. Lieutenant William Calley ordered the Charlie Company to proceed with the attack on the village of My Lai. Their goal was to exterminate the Viet Cong combatants and any one who stood in their way, but they ended up killing hundreds of innocent unarmed civilians instead. The Abu Ghraib torture and prison was an american military run prison that was active during the Iraqi war in 2003 until 2006. Even though we view Knights as professional warriors, we failed to see that they were much more than a warrior. Knights were not merely professional warriors: knighthood includes guidelines that one must follow: the notion of social status, political power, legal classification, and cultural expressions of knightly identity bravery, honor, loyalty, and service to a woman. Knights are the emblematic warriors of the European Middle Ages. (Knights: In History and Legend, pg. 15) Knights first surfaced between the years of 1000 1350 after the fall of the Roman Empire. • 9. The Crucible And 12 Angry Men Analysis The Crucible and Twelve Angry Men (1957 film) share many similarities between them, particularly in the themes they convey throughout the texts. Justice and prejudice are the main ideas presented in both texts, however the setting and outcomes differ significantly between the two, providing a different insight in each text. Both authors, Miller and Lumet, present relevant issues in the context of the 1950s that both texts were written. The similar social condition of America that the two texts were published in is a likely factor as to why the two texts have similar motifs presented throughout. Both The Crucible and Twelve Angry Men (1957 film) are about justice. The two texts feature important scenes involving a trial where the fate of a character s life rests in the hands of other people. However, the two texts have very different final outcomes. In both texts, the main protagonists argue against the majority, despite the backlash that they receive. Proctor speaks out in The Crucible after learning about the lies that Abigail and her friends are telling that have caused the imprisonment of members of the town and are even threatening their lives. Proctor takes a considerable risk by arguing against the witchcraft, especially in the Puritan society where religion is how the town is governed. His decision inevitably backfires on him and begins the series of events that lead to his execution. On the other hand, Juror #8 in Twelve Angry Men goes against the majority as he sees the boys poor upbringing, his less than fair state appointed defence attorney and the jury s almost immediate unanimous decision to convict him, unjust and believes he deserves a better chance. Unlike Proctor, Juror #8 speaking out against the other men results in justice for the accused who walks away with his life. Justice in the two texts is represented considerably differently to each other. In The Crucible it is evident that Abigail and her friends are in the wrong, condemning people to be death by lying and accusing the town members of Witchcraft, and therefore Proctor attempting to expose them for their dishonesty and bring justice to those who had been wrongfully accused, which included his wife, was a brave and noble thing to ... • 10. Hildegard Von Bingen Vision In the 2009 film, Vision: The Life of Hildegard von Bingen, the writer/director Margarethe von Trotta puts focus on Hildegard s journey to serve the Lord as best she can, in a time where the church is run by powerful men, and where the Roman Catholic Church is focused on centralizing the church and government though the first crusades. Hildegard (Barbara Sukowa) changes the history of the church by transcribing her visions into text and by breaking away from her cloister to start her own monasteries. As a visionary, she sees God through a different lens and thinks of him not to be feared, but to be celebrated. She believes his gifts will heal and guide, so long as one s heart is pure and humble. Margarethe von Trotta does a great job of showing the audience that Hildegard s view of God is not the same as the masses, some of which viewed God as a punisher that should be feared. As the film opened, the audience was exposed to the apocalyptic thinking of members of the church. The first scene of the movie shows a gathering of people in a place of worship, waiting out the end of the world. This congregation is surprised to wake up to another day. This was a common theme in earlier Christianity, and a view that later in the movie, we realize Hildegard von Bingen didn t share. A similar scene in terms of how one viewed God, was that of self flagellation early on in the movie. With the self harming of one s body for sacrifice to God, to suffer as Jesus did, it gives the ... I chose these two anthropologists not only because Dr. Wallace recommended them, but also because they work in my fields of interest. The first interview I conducted was anthropologist Dr. Jason Lind, he is currently a qualitative health researcher for the prestigious Veterans Association. The second interview I had was with anthropologist Dr. Kathryn Kozaitis, she is currently a professor and chair at Georgia State University. Throughout the process of both interviews Dr. Jason Lind and Dr. Kathryn Kozaitis give me an inside look at applied anthropologyand provide me with advice as I continue my college career. Both interviews helped me gain a better understanding of applied anthropology and learned valuable lessons. I asked both anthropologists the same questions because I wanted to see if there were any major differences in their answers. Surprisingly, they both had similar answers to most of the questions. I asked them questions about the differences between applied and non applied research in anthropology, their job satisfaction, background data, ethical issues, key skills for an anthropologist, and their recommendations for me and others who want to pursue a career as an anthropologist. I found it especially interesting that both Dr. Lind and Dr. Kozaitis come from different backgrounds but are both united by the same principles and share a lot of the same interests. ... • 15. A Theory Of Justice John Rawls Analysis Rawls: A Theory Of Justice John Rawls was an influential moral and political thinker in 20th century philosophy. He was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, studied at Princeton and Oxford, and worked at MIT, Cornell, and finally Harvard where he taught for over thirty years. Two of his younger brothers contracted deadly diseases from him (diphtheria and pneumonia) and died. Surprisingly, Rawls remained a Christian. He wrote an intensely religious senior thesis in college and even considered becoming a priest in the Episcopal Church. However, his time in WWII as an infantryman in the Pacific was too much for his conviction when he witnessed horrible deaths and learned of the Holocaust, and he lost his faith. The Vietnam war, which he... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea is that people with no prior self knowledge would choose a society that has the least amount of inequality in it just in case the poorest turns out to be them. Rawls goes on to expand on the principles of justice that he proposes. In general he says that these two principles apply to the basic structure of society and are meant to regulate the distribution of advantages and disadvantages. They are meant to make sure that rights and duties are equally distributed. He says, the basic liberties of citizens are, roughly speaking, political liberty (the right to vote and to be eligible for public office) together with freedom of speech and assembly; liberty of conscience and freedom of thought, freedom of the person along with the right to hold (personal) property; and freedom from arbitrary arrest and seizure as defined by the concept of the rule of law. He says that everyone should have the same amount of these liberties, since citizens of a just society are to have the same basic rights. Rawls does clarify the ordering of his principles as well, by explaining that the first principle can not be compensated for by greater social or economic advantages, but that the distribution of wealth and income must be consistent with ... The consumption of substances can be broken down into legal and illegal substances. The question is, who are we to label certain substances illegal and prohibit others from using them by creating penalties for their use? If the importation, sale and use of drugs were legal, the open competition would eliminate the profitability of drug dealing. Without the economic incentive to commit violent crimes, the violence of drug dealing would be dramatically reduced. The question then becomes, how should legalization be approached? In addition to legalization, the government must also educate people of the affects. Legalizing drugs would allow them to be available to those who would benefit from their medical use and those who would like to use them as recreational drugs much like alcohol and tobacco are. Research would also be encouraged as scientists could search for new and practical uses of drugs. There are many wonderful uses of drugs that have not yet been identified or perfected because of the strict laws against them. With expanded research, we could discover these new possibilities. • 17. The Red Badge Of Courage Character Analysis The Red Badge of Courage is a psychological or war novel written by Stephen Crane. Set during the Civil War, it is a fictional portrayal of the Battle of Chancellorsville, which was fought in 1863. This novel focuses on the psychology of a single soldier. Three main characters are introduced within the first chapter, Henry, Jim, and Wilson. Crane refers to Henry as the young soldier(33) and the youth (4) throughout the novel. He believes in time honored virtues such as courage and honor and sentimentalizes the visualization of dying in battle. Furthermore, because he is young, Henry has not experienced enough to test these conceptions. Because of this, Henry s most passionate notions are based on fantasies, making him seem vain and self centered. Jim and Henry contrast clearly within the opening pages of the novel. He is strong and self reliant and does not romanticize warin the manner that Henry does. Jim goes through his days efficiently and with few hardships. He prefers to do what duty requires of him and finds a simple pleasure in doing so. Jim remains prominently steady throughout the novel, but Wilson undergoes a vivid change. At first, Wilson is loud, ignorant, and opinionated. Crane refers to him as the loud soldier (13). His transformation becomes clear comparatively quickly. After a tense battle, Wilson takes on the role of Henry s caretaker. In addition, he displays his generosity by insisting that Henry takes his only blanket. The next ... Though some of the Spanish did have true intentions of saving the natives, who were seen as heathens for their evil practices, most of them had far more lucrative reasons for evangelizing and colonizing the New World. The conquistadores came to the New World mainly to expand their personal wealth, which in Spain many did not have much of. The Significance of the Pope Among the institutions established throughout the span of human history intended to govern the lives of men, perhaps none have been more lasting or have exerted more influence on the course of history than that of the papacy. As the recognized successor to St. Peter, who was ordained by Jesus Christ as the bishopof Rome and the leader of the universal church, the poperepresents the spiritual authority of Christendom and stands as a symbol of union within the Catholic Church. The continual succession, from as early as 32 AD until present day, has seen a total of 265 popes (The List of Popes) hold the title of Vicar of Christ, and this unbroken chain of leadership stands as a testament to the enduring significance of the papacy throughout the development of western civilization. Long based in the Roman enclave now known as Vatican City, the papacy has been both a transformative political power on the world stage, and a religious body transformed by the inexorable pull of progress. Civil Rights Heroes By Jonathan Kozol The names Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Langston Hughes, Jackie Robinson, Fannie Lou Hamer and Thurgood Marshall are all civil rights heroes, not to be forgotten. However, Jonathan Kozol reveals that the schools he has had experience with that are named after these civil rights champions are actually dishonoring the dead. Professor Gary Orfield indicates that schools that are comprised mostly of minority students, less than 1% white, are essentially apartheid schools. There is a reciprocal action, To give up on integration....requires us to consciously and deliberately accept segregation (Orfield and Eaton, 20). It is noted that some of the reasons New York has this problem is due to government enforced school boundaries, housing segregation and non enforced fair housing laws. Thus, the schools are named after the heroes in a show of respect and honor, yet their segregation is a dishonor to the namesakes. The racial isolation of the students leaves them feeling hidden, unwanted and inferior. This is a dishonor to those students and the people who fought so persistently for equal opportunities. Among other injustices, some schools in the South Bronx and other areas do not have basic essentials needed to conduct a safe environment ripe for learning. The apartheid schools are unsafe and underfunded, lacking enough rooms, chairs, play areas, libraries and enriching programs such as art and music. The first of the three, the English Great Rebellion was the result of the monarchy and its following fighting the wishes of parliament throughout the 1640 s. Although, not everyone approved of their classism, and their riches, while their subjects had very little on. I will discuss the effect the French Revolutionhad on both styles of art, Neoclassical and Romanticismand show how the same subject was viewed very differently by the artists in favor of the French Revolution, and by the artist opposed to it, and the Monarchy. For the Neoclassical style, I selected Jacques Louis David s Napoleon Crossing the Alps from 1801. It was hard not to select one of David s unofficial tributes to Napoleon, as he was a big fan. I selected Napoleons Crossing the Alps specifically, because it is a prime example of how David used his painting skills to convey a selective message, in this case, that Napoleon was a great heroic General. As Ben Pollitt highlights, The fact that Napoleon did not actually lead his troops over the Alps but followed a couple of days after them, travelling on a narrow path on the back of a mule is not the point! One of the reasons why the student body is full of diversity is because of the Affirmative Action. It is the policy that gives a special incentives to minorities and women to help promote diversity in school. Though it is a great idea to promote diversity in every college in United States, it is also a bad idea to continue this system. Many A students who are not minorities tend to get the same treatment as the B students who are minorities. Although accepted into school, these students who barely met the minimum criteria may have a tougher time at school because they may not be able to keep up with the pace of the classes since the schools have high expectations of its students. Furthermore, students who have worked hard to get good grades might be overlooked because the students who have lower grades will be accepted simply to fulfill the quota. Although promoting affirmative actionis a great idea to seek diversity through different views from many different ethnicities, it will also take away people s hard work, as well as producing more drop out students since they cannot keep up with what the university is expecting from them. Competitive advantage is the delivering of superior value to customers and, in doing so, earning an above average return for the company and its stakeholders (McGee, Thomas amp; Wilson, 2005, p.207). Each lesson is designed to allow students to have a hands on mind on experience by connecting what was learnt and with the world around them. Growing a garden The black bean seeds were planted in a pot, which contained soil from the backyard vegetable garden and cow manure. The pot was placed outside, in the shade of other plants in the backyard. By day eight the seeds had not germinated; therefore the pot was moved where it would get more than six hours of direct sunlight a day, which was the suggested amount required (Grow This, 2016, para. 3). With enough sunlight and the soil being watered each day the seeds germinated by day sixteen. The growth then became very rapid; however, there were signs of bugs eating the leaves due to the holes that could be seen. A bug spray was applied to the plant in the hope that the plant will survive. This spray was used twice a week and helped keep the bugs away and allowed the leaves to continue to grow. The black bean plant was exposed to a hot and dry Summer. By planting the black bean in a pot, it meant that shade could be applied when the harsh weather was due to arrive (Tuton, 2010, para. 3). The pot was relocated on days which would damage the growth of the plant and then returned to the previous location when the weather cooled down. The stems of the black bean plant measured in at 15 centimetres and sticks were added to help with the growth. However, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Analysis Of On Death Row, But Is He Innocent In On Death Row, but Is He Innocent? Nicholas Kristof explores the position that the evidence that convicted Kevin Cooper, an inmate on death row in San Quentin State Prison, may be unreliable. In 1983, a California professor drove to his neighbor s house to pick up his eleven year old son. He peered through the window to find the house in a state of bloody disarray. Amongst the blood was the bodies of his neighbor s family and the lifeless body of his son. Additionally, the professor Joshua Ryen who was stabbed multiple times, but still clinging to life. Kristof highlights the overwhelming evidence of policetampering with evidence that sent Kevin Cooper to death row. Additionally, Kristof suggests evidence as to Cooper s innocence was not given proper scrutiny. Therefore, Kristof alleges Cooper s case, particularly the evidence, should be reviewed. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger denied this request. Although as Attorney General of California, Jerry Brown should little interest in the case, as Governor he is currently reviewing the case. The fallacy of irrelevance, or ignoratio elenchi, is an argument purporting to establish a particular conclusion, but is instead directed to proving another conclusion. Kristof potentially frames the fallacy of ignoratio elenchi even from the title: On Death Row, but Is He Innocent? On the one hand, the title does not commit the fallacy if framed just as written, a question. However, to the suggest Kristof s defense equates to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
