descriptive and detailed, it is frequently thorough to a fault. It often takes the author three pages to
describe something that has little to no relevance to the actual plot. These little sub stories are often
left unresolved. The fact that the author goes completely off topic and rambles and then just leaves
it untouched for the rest of the story, adds to the already confusing intertwining plots and timelines.

In fact, an expert from the L.A. Sheriff s Department who testified at the Sleepy Lagoon trial is
quoted as saying:
Let us view it from the biological basis. . . Total disregard for human life has always been
universal throughout the Americas in the human population. And this Mexican element feels a
desire to kill or at least to draw blood (Tobar, 1997). On top of the racism faced in the courtroom
was the media bias against the Mexican American population. In the process of covering events in
the city, the then Hearst owned papers did a series of articles on the pachuco gangs, depicting
Mexican American neighborhoods as being fraught with violence, places of raping and
pillaging (Tobar, 1997). This was the atmosphere of the city at the time of the Sleepy Lagoon
murder in 1942, when the body of Jose Diaz was found at a common swimming hole after a
party. Because of the public outrage over pachuco gangs, which was instigated by the media, the
sheriff s department went on a sweep of the city s barrios, rounding up and arresting over 600
young men in connection to the Sleepy Lagoon case. Eventually 24 men were indicted for murder,
and 12 were convicted (Tobar, 1997). During the trial in early 1943, the defendants were forced to

White Vs. Board Of Education Essay
There are many cases in history that have a racial element like segregation to it. One of the most
important, influential, and more well known court cases that dealt with segregation was Brown
vs Board of Education of Topeka. It is commonly understood that Brown vs Board of Education
dealt with a little girl suing because she wanted to attend an all white school in her
neighborhood. In reality, the case was far more complex than that. In December, 1952, the U.S.
Supreme Court had on its docket cases from Kansas, Delaware, the District of Colombia, South
Carolina, and Virginia, all of which challenged the constitutionality of racial segregation in public
schools (Citation Here). The U.S. Supreme Court consolidated the five court cases into one and
gave it the name that is well known, Brown vs the Board of Education. This case would lead the
way in challenging segregation in United States school systems and creating and education system
that was more equal for minorities. In Delaware there were two separate cases that had similar
issues. The first case was Belton vs Gebhart, and that dealt with parents being forced to send their
children to a run down segregated high school away from their neighborhood, rather than an all
white school that was in their community. The other case, Bulah vs Gebhart, was brought forward
by a parent who was trying to get bus transportation for the black children in her town. Her main
