Bartleby Totalitarianism
The Narrator in Bartleby the Scrivener makes a point to describe the setting and its interactions with
the characters to Elucidate not only the question of Free Will but to create Melville s indictment of
labor within the structure of Capitalism. The Concept of Free Will and necessity play an important
role in constructing the universe and laws therein. They not only aid in structuring the plot and how a
thing occurs in a fictional universe. They give insight to the author s view of the world and are
recurring themes in Herman Melville s work. The concept of Free Will and necessity allow for an
immediate change in the moral paradigm and give Melville a platform and structure with which to
create his indictment of labor and Capitalism. In Bartleby the Schrivener, he mentions two
Necessitarian philosophers from a Christian background. The two works by these philosophers and
Necessitarianism in general give a unique perspective as to what Melville is trying to convey in this
story. They construct a world not of possibilities, but of rigidity and lacking in the traditional
conception of freedom.
In, Bartleby the Schrivener, the narrator mentions two works on Free Will and ... Show more content

As Bartleby maintains his preferences he ignores necessity. The humdrum and monotony of life are
required to eat, have social engagement, and sustain the necessities of life. These necessities lead to a
softer deterministic world that Melville traditionally works in. In, Bartleby the Schrivener, this sets up
a world where you must act in accordance with obtaining these necessities, meaning you must work,
suffer daily annoyances to eat and be sheltered. These things are simple. However, they limit freedom
of choice and constrict Free Will in Bartleby. This is not only indicative through the preferences of
Bartleby; but through the interactions of all the characters in

Human Trafficking In Sacramento
For the longest, Sacramento residents have been living inside of a bubble. They live blissfully
unaware of the bustling human trafficking chains occuring right in the heart of California Sacramento.
They sleep soundly at night, not knowing about the dangerous underground of human trafficking
chains awakening and starting their businesses. These human trafficking chains leave wounds on
Sacramento, but it is only just being addressed with a bandage. The thing that people aren t realizing is
human trafficking chains are nothing new in Sacramento, especially when it has been rooted in
Sacramento for many years, so raising awareness is not enough to completely address the problem of
human trafficking. This is why I believe educating the public ... Show more content on

victims similarly lack medical care or are denied medical attention, appear malnourished, show

When The Elephants Dance Summary
The book entitled When the Elephants Dance by Tess Uriza Holthe is a fiction novel based in the
capital of the Philippines called Manila. The book took place during World War II when the Japanese
occupied the Philippines. The book was very interesting as the author, Holthe, made the reader feel as
if he/she was experiencing the action. I liked the book because of its great explanation and because it
was told in three different perspectives. I did not like the quick transitions into storytelling because I
got a little confused while reading. In this book, there was a family who lived in Manila, Philippines
during the Japanese occupation during World War II. This family faced the many struggles of the war
as they tried to shelter each other in their home so no one would be in harm s way. When one person
went out to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After this movement, Manila was announced to be an open city. Hoping that this plan would end
destruction, the people were let down when they learned that Japan was still bombing Manila and soon
began to take over ( Timeline ). Unfortunately, the troops were in a horrible situation; but an even
worse scenario when they received the news that General McArthur would leave them. General
McArthur had left for Australia [due to] personal orders of Roosevelt in March, leaving behind 80,000
soldiers who were later ordered to surrender [in May of 1942] (Hailstork 268). The defense done by
the Philippines did not end until they surrendered. Most of the 80,000 soldiers forced to surrender
were then forced to face the Bataan Death March, a walk to a prison camp that was far away (
Philippine ). Most of the prisoners died on the way to the camp due to starvation, thirst, disease, and
random execution... ( Timeline ). It has been assumed that as many as 10,000 men died during the

The Importance Of Birth Tourism
Ramirez 1 Ramirez 2 Jocelyn Ramirez Instructor Sharifian GOVT 2305 75427 28 JULY 2017
Assignment Two Every parent has the best intentions when It comes to their family. They will do the
impossible in order to provide their children the best way of life and education they can obtain. Most
people who immigrate into the U.S. have to start their life over from scratch. While others come in
with visas and are able to pay thousands to have a place they can call home throughout their
pregnancy. Those types of families are known for birth tourism, or coming into the U.S. 1 to have
anchor babies. The U.S. is the land of all opportunities and for people who were not born here might
wish that they could have a chance to live the American dream. Which is why the U.S. is popular for
birth tourism to occur in because of the practice of birthright citizenship (Will F. G., 2010 ). The areas
that are most popular with birth tourism are California and New York, California having the most
activity. One of the reasons why California gained popularity was because one of the medical centers
in Chino Hills made national news (Grant, p. 166). Birth tourism is mostly practiced among the
Chinese, Taiwanese and Turkish nationals. However, Chinese has been the most increasing over the
years. One of the many reason why the Chinese increasingly participate in Birth tourism is because, in
China they have a strict one baby rule among families. So, most of them come to the U.S. 2 to give

The Need to Update and Revolutionize The Church
It was difficult for me to get past the first page of reading Willimon s The Pastor as Preacher. The first
sentence which struck me was most of those who are under authority refuse to treat preachers as their
instructors. These words hit me squarely in the face, because I have been struggling with my current
endeavors for my supervised ministry
The one great preacher...is the Church. I agree vehemently with this statement. This is why when I
drive pass the Church day, after day, seeing no activity going on. No cars, no influx of people coming
in and out of the doors. No pastor there on standby for any lonely, lost soul who is looking for solace
within the confines of the Church doors. I become more and more disenchanted with the Church. The
ideas I am trying to implement and initiate are often meet with great dissention from the people. They
think fish fry s and car washes are ministry. They struggle with treating me as instructor, someone
there to help teach them. I have never been so conflicted in my life. I want to see the Church grow. I
want to see the Church standing in the community as the greatest pontificator of the Gospel, yet it lies
dormant. It lies like a sleeping giant who is yet to understand the true power it possess. I think my
greatest opposition stems from the fact the previous pastor was an idealist. He had great ideas and a
great vision for the Church. The new pastor, a well grounded and well respected figure in our
denomination, seems

State Museum Essay
According to the research I did on the website before coming to the State Museum of Pennsylvania,
ever since it was created in 1905, this museum has both collected and preserved the history of the
State of Pennsylvania.(n.d., About Section, para. 1). This peaked my interest on the museum so on
Sunday morning my Dad gave me a ride to the State Museum of Pennsylvania. The weather
conditions were particularly colder than usual. It felt like ice cubes were rubbing on my skin. I saw a
couple of people going inside the building and I followed after them. When I walked into the building
the temperature felt warmer than it was outside. The facility smelt like fresh soap and conditioning.

My eyes first gazed upon a painting on the p.2 right side of the wall. It was a picture of a woman who
most likely lived in the early 19th century. She was Caucasian and wore a black dress. The painting
also had a golden like frame around it. I touched the frame itself wondering what kind of materials
were used to create it. As a whole wasn t masterful yet I could sense some of the passion that went
into this painting. I looked around the facility and came to the realization that I was the only one there
at the time. As oppose to my experience in the State Museum, I could hear my own thoughts clearly.
There wasn t too much noise to distract me from the experience. The building was in fact a lower
caliber when compared to the State Museum. It smelled different and it felt different as well however,
just because it was of a lower caliber, it doesn t mean that it was a horrendous experience. It had it s
own aesthetic flare one that I fairly enjoyed. As I paced around the lobby I could hear the floor I was
stepping on make a creaking noise. It persisted throughout my entire stay at the building. After that I
took some of the chocolate covered peanuts I had and eat some of them. From the outside, it smelled
like cocoa. The chocolate tasted like sweetened cocoa that melted in my mouth. When the chocolate
subsided, I could taste the peanut that was inside of it. It was crunchy and a bit salty. After

2.2 Ansoff s Matrix
Igor Ansoff was a Russian/American mathematician who applied his work to the world of business.
His most famous work is the Ansoff Matrix. The purpose of this matrix is to help managers consider
how to grow their business through existing or new products or in existing or new markets. By using
this Matrix,he was helping managers to assess the differing degrees of risk associated with moving
their organisation forward.
Marketing strategies
Ansoff s Matrix suggests 4 alternative marketing strategies which hinge on whether products are new
or existing. They also focus on whether a market is new or existing. Within each strategy there is a
differing level of risk. The four strategies are such as:
1. Market penetration This involves increasing market share within existing market segments. This
can be achieved by selling more products/services to established customers or by finding new
customers within existing markets.
2. Product development This involves developing new products for existing markets. Product
development involves thinking about how new products can meet customer needs more closely and
outperform the products of competitors.
3. Market development This strategy entails finding new markets for existing products. Market
research and further segmentation of markets helps to

Judge Law And Common Law System
IIII Judge in civil law and common law system
1 Judges position in civil law system
In civil law system, the judge has different role in courtroom for running cases. In civil law systems,
civil cases are actually run by the judge, with subordinate involvement by the parties advocates,
indicates of this conception of the judge s role is that traditionally it was thought to be up to him to
decide the issues in dispute, and finally formulate the judgment according to the law and the proof, in
such a system, the lawyers activities may be characterized as residual, they may create suggestions
concerning the evidence, as well as propose either issues to be examined or questions. Judge has more
powers from the beginning of the case until the final decision.
Moreover, a judge in civil law system does not silent during the trial, judge participates in the case by
making question for parties. Judges in civil law systems act as inquisitor, interpreter of code language,
and finder of fact, in many examples sitting on juries themselves, judges in civil law system, they
depend less on precedent than on commentary by legal scholars. In Civil law states, judges are bound
to codes. Thus, judge has different role in courtroom, for running trial, for asking questions, for
collecting evidence, and deciding on cases. For example, Judge in Iraqi civil legal. Judge in Iraqi legal
system has different role than common law system. The judges is investigative on cases , then the

The Pros And Cons Of Smuggling
Smuggling is the illegal transportation of objects, information or people, such as out of a house or
buildings, into a prison, or across an international border, in violation of applicable laws or other
regulations . Diplomats and officials involved in drug smuggling have benefited from diplomatic
immunity via the diplomatic bag. For example, a Venezuelan general wanted in the United States on
drugs charges and arrested in Aruba was released after the Venezuelan government protested his
diplomatic immunity and threatened sanctions if Aruba did not release him It is of note that the
Sterling submachine gun used to shoot dead WPC Yvonne Fletcher from inside the Libyan Embassy in
London was smuggled out of the United Kingdom in one of 21 diplomatic bags in 1984 . In 2012, a 16
kg shipment of cocaine was sent to the United Nations in New York in a bag masquerading as a
diplomatic pouch while in January 2012, Italy detected 40 kilograms of cocaine smuggled in a
diplomatic pouch from Ecuador . A diplomatic bag, also known as a diplomatic pouch, is a container
whose contents are protected from searches or seizure by the provisions of Article 27 Vienna

History Encompasses More Than Merely Events That Occurred
History encompasses more than merely events that occurred in the past. History is about;
understanding how people felt, how they lived and how certain events shaped the society they lived in.
The truth is, today s society only knows bits and pieces of history because most of the history that s
known is often misinterpreted, or misconstrued due to the lack of evidence that has survived, or the
over abundance of information that is present. Other times, history might be misinterpreted because
historians try to fill in the blanks with information. For example, Christopher Columbus is heralded as
the founder of North America; however, it has been proven that there were other explorers that
discovered North America first; years before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By reading the diary, you are essentially transported back in time; as though you were walking in that
person s shoes. Even though history is a very interesting area of study there are many different ways
of interpreting it.
The problem with studying history is that it s very hard to accurately say that things occurred a certain
way. World War II ended yes, but who played the bigger role in its conclusion? Depending on where
you are, people would answer the question differently. If you were Russian you would say the
Russians played the bigger role in ending World War II, however, if you were an American, you might
say otherwise. In all, history is only as accurate as the interpretation of the given evidence, and even
then there might be misconceptions.
The epistemological fragility of history makes certain aspects of history hard to interpret and
understand and therefore, it s hard to put together a complete picture. An example of this phenomenon
involves the massacre that occurred in Almo, Idaho in 1861. The massacre served as a collective
identity for the people of the town because it was a reminder of the struggle that the settlers went
through to ensure the survival of themselves, as well as their families. (Maybe add something here?)
Oftentimes, people study history because they want to know where they came from. A collective

The Situation Of The Iran Hostage Crisis
On November 4, 1979, an angry mob of some 300 to 500 supposed students who called themselves
Imam s Disciples, laid siege to the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran. The mob held 66 U.S. citizens
and diplomats as hostages. Women and African Americans were released a short while later, but 52
hostages still remained for 444 days. The president took precautions to ensure the safety of the
hostages as well as U.S. relations in Iran. This terrorist act triggered the most profound crisis of the
Carter presidency and began a personal ordeal for Jimmy Carter and the American people. The events
in the Iran Hostage Crisis demonstrate how bad the president at the time, Jimmy Carter, can handle
such a horrible situation. Several negotiations were held between President Jimmy Carter and the mob
at the Embassy even if they weren t taken as good with the mob. First off, Carter imposed sanctions
and applied diplomatic pressure to encourage negotiations for the release of the hostages. Carter then
cancelled oil imports from Iran, expelled a number of Iranians from the U.S., and freezing about $8
billion of Iranian assets in the U.S. The Iranian government denied any responsibility for the incident,
but their failure to take action against the hostage takers belied the denial. This was one of the first
mistakes; making the enemy mad, therefore giving them a stronger spring to bounce back on when
you go attack or invade in their land.

Understanding The Biblical Worldview And Christian Worldview
Understanding the Biblical Worldview There are lots of non Christian or secular worldviews. I believe
that there is one biblical or Christian worldview. This could be referred to as the basic Christian
worldview. It reflects the basic principles of Christianity. Dr. Henderson gives a brief explanation of
authentic and holistic Christianity in his presentation. I agree with what Dr. Henderson said, authentic
Christianity is Christ centered and biblically based .[1] My Christian worldview should be
characterized, by who I am in Christ and what I know to be biblical. Romans 12:2 says, And do not be
conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what
is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. [2] I want God to shape my worldview, rather
than have it shaped by this world.
Dr. Henderson said, A worldview contains a person s answers to the most important questions in life.
[3] Christians are given the answers to those questions through the Word of God. We believe that the
Word of God is authoritative. Dr. Henderson said, The Bible is the Word of God, as Scripture, as what
has been written down, as the Holy Spirit enabled and guided holy people to write it. [4] As a
Christian, I should seek to apply the Word of God to every aspect of my life.
A person s worldview, whether it is Christian or non Christian, is often influenced by their
experiences. People develop different ways of thinking, as they experience the world

Failure of the Legal System in Atonement, Wonder Boys and...
The code of Hammurabi, dating back to 1772 BC, is one of the oldest recorded legal codes and
reflects the early Babylonians views of justice. The code is best known for an eye for an eye, a tooth
for a tooth. By enumerating punishments for certain crimes the code removes ambiguity and combined
with its relatively harsh penalties, especially on lower class citizens, served as an effective deterrent.
More profoundly however, Hammurabi s code formally shifted justice seeking responsibilities from
the individual to the state. Today, most modern legal systems are structured similarly to Hammurabi s
code with their own codified laws and listed punishments. Capital punishment and the idea that the
punishment should fit he crime are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is because justice is not rigidly defined that some opt to pursue justice by means unsanctioned by
the state. In Ian McEwan s Atonement, Michael Chabon s Wonder Boys and Louise Erdrich s The
Round House the legal system fails to produce just outcomes. In Atonement one of the main
characters, Robbie is convicted of raping a young girl, when in fact he is innocent. Despite only
unsubstantiated evidence from a 13 year old girl, he is convicted. Only after the judicial system had
failed did the girl wish to recant her former account, but by then it was too late. If you were lying then,
why should a court believe you now? There are no new facts, and you re an unreliable witness
(McEwan 82). In this unjust sentencing of an innocent man, Atonement shows that not only does the
legal system sometimes err, but that these errors are often particularly difficult to ameliorate.
Unfortunately this is not an anomaly. One in nine people sentenced to death row were later exonerated
showing that sometimes instead of being the solvency for wrongdoings, the legal system can be the
source (Stevenson). While Atonement showed the legal system s complicity in some injustices, in both
Wonder Boys and The Round House the legal system s failure to serve justice can be seen. In Wonder
Boys, the reader follows the protagonist through an erratic weekend in which he engages in several
unethical and unlawful behaviors. Grady Tripp (the main character), throughout the course

The Healthy Mediterranean Diet Will Be Under Siege By Fast...
about €2.9 billion in 2019, which amounts to a 50 percent increase from 2014 (Jones). This indicates
that the healthy Mediterranean diet will continue to be under siege by fast food which could see the
healthiest people in the world become fat and more prone to diet based diseases.
As noted earlier, the problem of health and culture go together not only in Europe, but also in the
Asian markets. Various countries in Asia have seen very similar results of what is happening in the
Mediterranean. Many Asian nations have been invaded by the fast food industry and have seen their
culture and health decline. Specifically in China, the traditional cuisine includes large amounts of
vegetables and grains with meager quantity of meat. However, ... Show more content on

This indicates that people feel the pressure that fast food does in fact affect culture and that measures
must be taken in order to prevent losing their identity before it is too late. One example of this is in
France, a country with a long history of taking pride in its cuisine. In 2011, for the first time in the
country s history, fast food earned more than the traditional French restaurants and bistros (Samuel).
The traditional diet is vital to France as it is a way of life and a source of revenue from tourists. For
those reasons in 2010, the government was able to put the ethnic diet on the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization s (UNESCO) World Heritage List as a way to
protect the cuisine ( France s Fast Food ). The same article noted that the government has also tried to
push through legislation that would limit the amount of places that can be called a restaurant to
establishments who make over half of their food on the premises. This potential regulation would
create transparency which would help to distinguish ethnic food from fast food. Through these
measures, the French government is attempting to control the damage and lessen the impact of fast
food on their historic cuisine. However, it is an uphill battle to try and reverse the effects of the fast
food industry even in

My Experience At The Age Of Five
At the age of five, I experienced my first dentistry. As they d work on my teeth I would ask question
like What is that? , What does it do? This experience did not only trigger my career goal but made me
who I am. After my first experience I loved looking at people smile and going to the dentist every
month. I was bullied at the age of six for this very reason. As I grew older I developed three missions
in life. One, to finish school and earn my high school degree, two to start college , and three to earn
my degree and start working as a dentist. Soon these missions became goals. After I finished high
school I set new missions: one to start college, two to earn my Bachelor s degree and my doctoral
degree and three to get a good score on my Dental Acceptance test.
After I finished high school, I started to search for community college with dental classes. That s when
I heard of Tarrant County College (TCC) .I immediately ran to the school and applied as soon as
possible. After a month or so I got a letter allowing me to start college, as I read the words hope raised
up in my body. I asked my older sister Iftah, to help me get strategies for college because I was new to
the idea. During August, me and my sister Iftah created a strategy list. For me to be a dentist I first
need to complete a bachelor s degree. Getting a bachelor s required hard work and commitment.
Saying hard work did not mean just slacking off it meant I had to have good grades and a perfect
attendance.

Defining Moment Idea #1: War Measures Act
Possible Sources:
Smith, Denis. War Measures Act . The Canadian Encyclopedia. Toronto: Historica Canada, 2013.

My Thoughts/Commentary Notes
The war measures act seems like a great policy that would allow for quick and bold decisions which
would be best for a situation of war.
If I was alive during WW1 when this policy was being imposed, I would be in favor of it because I
understand how important it is for the government to make quick decisions without the delay of
arguments and debates. However, If I was one of the enemy aliens and they used this policy to force
me to work for them (like constructing railways etc.) I would not be in favor of this act and I would

This is one evidence of how much Canada cares about national security and is willing to go to any
extent. The October Crisis case seems like nothing compared to the acts of domestic terrorism that
have occurred in other countries, and I think that to achieve the level of national security that Canada
has acquired these countries should practice policies like the war measures act to solidify their
national security. A country that I know will benefit from such a law is India.
This speech made by Pierre Trudeau shows how much the Canadian government cares about doing
whatever is in the best interest of the country and the Canadian People because it shows that the
government wants to protect its national security, and at the same time wants to do it in a way that
won t harm the general population. However, in the case of the October crisis this was not possible
and the government was forced to resort to the War measures act to save preserve the national security
of Canada. Despite having to resort to this act, the government did not forget about the general public
and told them that the government will be held answerable any and all of its

The Battle of the Boyne Essay
The Battle of the Boyne (Irish: Cath na Bóinne) was a turning point in the Williamite claim on the
English throne.
The deposed King James VII of Scotland and James II of England and Ireland and his Jacobite
supporters were defeated by James nephew and son in law, William III and his supporters. By the
invitation of Parliament, William had deposed James in 1688. Both kings acted as commander of their
respective armies.
The battle took place on July 1, 1690 (Old Style) just outside the town of Drogheda on Ireland s east
coast. Each army stood on opposing sides of the River Boyne. William s forces easily defeated those
of James who led an army of mostly raw recruits. The symbolic importance of this battle has made it

James VII and II
King of England, Scotland and Ireland

The opposing armies in the battle were led by the Roman Catholic former King James II of England
and Scotland and King of Ireland and opposing him, his nephew and son in law the Protestant William
III ( William of Orange ) who had deposed James from his English and Scottish thrones in the
previous year. James s supporters still controlled much of Ireland and the Irish Parliament. James also
enjoyed the support of the French king, Louis XIV, who did not want to see a hostile monarch, such as
William, on the throne of England. To support James s restoration, Louis sent 6,000 French troops to
Ireland to support the Irish Jacobites. William was already Stadtholder of the Netherlands and was
able to call on Dutch and allied troops from continental Europe as well as from Great Britain.
James was a seasoned general who had proven his bravery when fighting for his brother King Charles
II in Europe, notably at the Battle of the Dunes (1658). However, recent historians have noted that he
was prone to panicking under pressure and to making rash decisions, probably due to the onset of
dementia which was to overtake him completely in later years. William, although a seasoned
commander was hardly one of history s great generals and had yet to win a major battle. Many of his
battles ended in bloody stalemates, prompting

(48 Larson) Good Literature is what it sounds like it s good but nothing amazing. It is for example, the
Hunger Games, where it is a fun and exciting read, but doesn t spark a change or awakening. This
distinction between good and great is vital to the gradual understanding of what makes the human
mind tick. Good literature might be nice for a quick and easy read on the beach, but Great literature or
nonfiction will change one s view point and requires detail and focus to extract its full meaning. Our
group established 5 criterions to state what makes great literature. Our first criterion was A great book
must contain a message that applies to not only those who have experienced situations in the book, but
provide perspective to those who have not. A message that can be understood by numerous groups of
people is vital to a great piece of literature. Our second criterion is that in order to teach a lesson it
must expose a fault in human nature or in society. Our society is just as flawed as humanity is.
Acknowledging these flaws is the first step in overcoming the trials of society and man. Our third
criterion is centered around the craftsmanship of the literary work. This can apply to a groundbreaking
new approach to narration. Or even complex characters and a unique and individual style (Faulkner.)
In summary, the 3rd criterion tries to move past just the message itself, and to focus on

A Research Study On Laboratory
LABORATORY SECTIONS
In contrast to the often passive lecture environment, laboratory classes provide an opportunity for
active hands on learning, where students can apply and engage with the material learned in lecture.
For many students, labs are where their enthusiasm and interest in the material is stimulated. However,
if the experiments appear unconnected to the theory learned in class, or unrelated to everyday life or
the student s major, they can be viewed as busy work: come to class, follow a set procedure, collect
data, fill in datasheet, discuss the results then repeat the next week, rather than a learning opportunity.
This is especially true of introductory labs were students are learning basic procedures. Consequently,
a well prepared TA who clearly explains the relevance of the experiment can have a large impact is
how the lab is perceived.
TAs are also responsible for ensuring safe working practices. A major component of this is being
prepared. Before the semester starts, read all relevant safety manuals. In addition, spend some time in
the laboratory to learn the location and proper operation of all safety equipment, e.g. fire
extinguishers, safety shower, eye wash, first aid kit. If working in a chemical laboratory, learn what
chemicals are stored, where they are stored and safe handling procedures. In addition, learn the proper
operation of all laboratory equipment. The course instructor or laboratory technician should arrange a
training session. Attend

The Film John Ford s Stagecoach
In Pursuit of Liberty: An American Story Political philosopher John Locke theorized, given a state
devoid of human construct, man would be free to order their habits as he deemed fit, governed only by
the law of nature. While the postulations of Locke and his contemporaries were relegated to
conceptualizations made from pen and paper, there existed a period of American history in which the
promise of a life free from the regulations and customs drove countless entrepreneurs and outlaws

The sublime landscape of the American West allows Western films to explore man as he exists in a
state of nature; that being a life in which the individual is wholly responsible for their own survival
whose actions are judged solely by their own standards of morality. Reoccurring themes such as self
determination and duty signify an underlying ideology existing within the American Psyche that
yearns for an existence in which the monotony of corporate offices and TV sitcoms are replaced by a
rifle and a quiet homestead. Considering the contextual history during which Stagecoach appears,
America was facing a crippling economic depression after aiding the Allies in the Great War. The
Nation was experiencing rapid growth, as the land which through manifest destiny was promised as an
opportunity to begin life anew, suddenly began being inhabited from one coast to the next. The
blessings of civilization in this light, may be thought of as oppressive forces hindering the liberties of

In other to prevent obesity, cities and counties have to encourage food retail establishments to promote
healthier options through law and inducement. Retail food establishments like, chain restaurants,
corner stores, supermarkets, farmers markets, and mobile vendors affect public health. Public officials
have advocated a range of policy options to cities for improving access to healthy food and decreasing
the popularity of unhealthy food in various retail food settings (Diller and Graff). Paul A. Diller and
Samantha Graff convey to readers that Regulating retail food establishments can be a powerful tool
for improving a community s food environment, especially in low income food deserts areas that lack
full service supermarkets and restaurants and are saturated with fast food restaurants and liquor stores.
Cities challenging unusual obesity rates are considering numerous governing policies for expanding
the convenience and accessibility of nutritious food, and diminishing the universality of fast food
restaurants and obesogenic packaged food. According to the article Regulating Food Retail for
Obesity Prevention: How Far Can Cities Go? Diller and Graff indicate that most states grant cities or
counties some form of home rule, allowing for broad local policymaking authority. In many home rule
states, cities or counties exercise the police power that is, the authority to regulate for the health,
safety, and welfare of the community concurrently with the state legislature. This home rule is a form
of dividing state and local power that allows municipalities to exercise only those powers directly
assigned by state law. In most states, there is solid legal authority at the municipal level that accept

  • 2. Bartleby Totalitarianism The Narrator in Bartleby the Scrivener makes a point to describe the setting and its interactions with the characters to Elucidate not only the question of Free Will but to create Melville s indictment of labor within the structure of Capitalism. The Concept of Free Will and necessity play an important role in constructing the universe and laws therein. They not only aid in structuring the plot and how a thing occurs in a fictional universe. They give insight to the author s view of the world and are recurring themes in Herman Melville s work. The concept of Free Will and necessity allow for an immediate change in the moral paradigm and give Melville a platform and structure with which to create his indictment of labor and Capitalism. In Bartleby the Schrivener, he mentions two Necessitarian philosophers from a Christian background. The two works by these philosophers and Necessitarianism in general give a unique perspective as to what Melville is trying to convey in this story. They construct a world not of possibilities, but of rigidity and lacking in the traditional conception of freedom. In, Bartleby the Schrivener, the narrator mentions two works on Free Will and ... The humdrum and monotony of life are required to eat, have social engagement, and sustain the necessities of life. These necessities lead to a softer deterministic world that Melville traditionally works in. These things are simple. However, they limit freedom of choice and constrict Free Will in Bartleby. They live blissfully unaware of the bustling human trafficking chains occuring right in the heart of California Sacramento. They sleep soundly at night, not knowing about the dangerous underground of human trafficking chains awakening and starting their businesses. These human trafficking chains leave wounds on Sacramento, but it is only just being addressed with a bandage. The thing that people aren t realizing is human trafficking chains are nothing new in Sacramento, especially when it has been rooted in Sacramento for many years, so raising awareness is not enough to completely address the problem of human trafficking. • 8. When The Elephants Dance Summary The book entitled When the Elephants Dance by Tess Uriza Holthe is a fiction novel based in the capital of the Philippines called Manila. The book took place during World War II when the Japanese occupied the Philippines. The book was very interesting as the author, Holthe, made the reader feel as if he/she was experiencing the action. I liked the book because of its great explanation and because it was told in three different perspectives. I did not like the quick transitions into storytelling because I got a little confused while reading. In this book, there was a family who lived in Manila, Philippines during the Japanese occupation during World War II. This family faced the many struggles of the war as they tried to shelter each other in their home so no one would be in harm s way. When one person went out to ... General McArthur had left for Australia [due to] personal orders of Roosevelt in March, leaving behind 80,000 soldiers who were later ordered to surrender [in May of 1942] (Hailstork 268). The defense done by the Philippines did not end until they surrendered. The Importance Of Birth Tourism Ramirez 1 Ramirez 2 Jocelyn Ramirez Instructor Sharifian GOVT 2305 75427 28 JULY 2017 Assignment Two Every parent has the best intentions when It comes to their family. They will do the impossible in order to provide their children the best way of life and education they can obtain. Most people who immigrate into the U.S. have to start their life over from scratch. While others come in with visas and are able to pay thousands to have a place they can call home throughout their pregnancy. Those types of families are known for birth tourism, or coming into the U.S. 1 to have anchor babies. The U.S. is the land of all opportunities and for people who were not born here might wish that they could have a chance to live the American dream. Which is why the U.S. is popular for birth tourism to occur in because of the practice of birthright citizenship (Will F. G., 2010 ). The areas that are most popular with birth tourism are California and New York, California having the most activity. One of the reasons why California gained popularity was because one of the medical centers in Chino Hills made national news (Grant, p. 166). Birth tourism is mostly practiced among the Chinese, Taiwanese and Turkish nationals. However, Chinese has been the most increasing over the years. One of the many reason why the Chinese increasingly participate in Birth tourism is because, in China they have a strict one baby rule among families. So, most of them come to the U.S. 2 to give birth to more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Need to Update and Revolutionize The Church It was difficult for me to get past the first page of reading Willimon s The Pastor as Preacher. The first sentence which struck me was most of those who are under authority refuse to treat preachers as their instructors. These words hit me squarely in the face, because I have been struggling with my current endeavors for my supervised ministry The one great preacher...is the Church. I agree vehemently with this statement. This is why when I drive pass the Church day, after day, seeing no activity going on. No cars, no influx of people coming in and out of the doors. No pastor there on standby for any lonely, lost soul who is looking for solace within the confines of the Church doors. I become more and more disenchanted with the Church. The ideas I am trying to implement and initiate are often meet with great dissention from the people. They think fish fry s and car washes are ministry. They struggle with treating me as instructor, someone there to help teach them. I have never been so conflicted in my life. I want to see the Church grow. I want to see the Church standing in the community as the greatest pontificator of the Gospel, yet it lies dormant. It lies like a sleeping giant who is yet to understand the true power it possess. I think my greatest opposition stems from the fact the previous pastor was an idealist. He had great ideas and a great vision for the Church. State Museum Essay According to the research I did on the website before coming to the State Museum of Pennsylvania, ever since it was created in 1905, this museum has both collected and preserved the history of the State of Pennsylvania.(n.d., About Section, para. 1). This peaked my interest on the museum so on Sunday morning my Dad gave me a ride to the State Museum of Pennsylvania. The weather conditions were particularly colder than usual. It felt like ice cubes were rubbing on my skin. I saw a couple of people going inside the building and I followed after them. When I walked into the building the temperature felt warmer than it was outside. The facility smelt like fresh soap and conditioning. The first artifact that caught my attention was a huge ... As a whole wasn t masterful yet I could sense some of the passion that went into this painting. I looked around the facility and came to the realization that I was the only one there at the time. As oppose to my experience in the State Museum, I could hear my own thoughts clearly. There wasn t too much noise to distract me from the experience. The building was in fact a lower caliber when compared to the State Museum. It smelled different and it felt different as well however, just because it was of a lower caliber, it doesn t mean that it was a horrendous experience. It had it s own aesthetic flare one that I fairly enjoyed. As I paced around the lobby I could hear the floor I was stepping on make a creaking noise. It persisted throughout my entire stay at the building. After that I took some of the chocolate covered peanuts I had and eat some of them. From the outside, it smelled like cocoa. The chocolate tasted like sweetened cocoa that melted in my mouth. When the chocolate subsided, I could taste the peanut that was inside of it. It was crunchy and a bit salty. After ... Judge Law And Common Law System IIII Judge in civil law and common law system 1 Judges position in civil law system In civil law system, the judge has different role in courtroom for running cases. In civil law systems, civil cases are actually run by the judge, with subordinate involvement by the parties advocates, indicates of this conception of the judge s role is that traditionally it was thought to be up to him to decide the issues in dispute, and finally formulate the judgment according to the law and the proof, in such a system, the lawyers activities may be characterized as residual, they may create suggestions concerning the evidence, as well as propose either issues to be examined or questions. • 18. History Encompasses More Than Merely Events That Occurred History encompasses more than merely events that occurred in the past. History is about; understanding how people felt, how they lived and how certain events shaped the society they lived in. The truth is, today s society only knows bits and pieces of history because most of the history that s known is often misinterpreted, or misconstrued due to the lack of evidence that has survived, or the over abundance of information that is present. Other times, history might be misinterpreted because historians try to fill in the blanks with information. For example, Christopher Columbus is heralded as the founder of North America; however, it has been proven that there were other explorers that discovered North America first; years before ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By reading the diary, you are essentially transported back in time; as though you were walking in that person s shoes. Even though history is a very interesting area of study there are many different ways of interpreting it. The problem with studying history is that it s very hard to accurately say that things occurred a certain way. World War II ended yes, but who played the bigger role in its conclusion? Depending on where you are, people would answer the question differently. If you were Russian you would say the Russians played the bigger role in ending World War II, however, if you were an American, you might say otherwise. In all, history is only as accurate as the interpretation of the given evidence, and even then there might be misconceptions. The epistemological fragility of history makes certain aspects of history hard to interpret and understand and therefore, it s hard to put together a complete picture. An example of this phenomenon involves the massacre that occurred in Almo, Idaho in 1861. The massacre served as a collective identity for the people of the town because it was a reminder of the struggle that the settlers went through to ensure the survival of themselves, as well as their families. (Maybe add something here?) Oftentimes, people study history because they want to know where they came from. A collective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Situation Of The Iran Hostage Crisis On November 4, 1979, an angry mob of some 300 to 500 supposed students who called themselves Imam s Disciples, laid siege to the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran. The mob held 66 U.S. citizens and diplomats as hostages. Women and African Americans were released a short while later, but 52 hostages still remained for 444 days. The president took precautions to ensure the safety of the hostages as well as U.S. relations in Iran. This terrorist act triggered the most profound crisis of the Carter presidency and began a personal ordeal for Jimmy Carter and the American people. The events in the Iran Hostage Crisis demonstrate how bad the president at the time, Jimmy Carter, can handle such a horrible situation. Several negotiations were held between President Jimmy Carter and the mob at the Embassy even if they weren t taken as good with the mob. First off, Carter imposed sanctions and applied diplomatic pressure to encourage negotiations for the release of the hostages. Carter then cancelled oil imports from Iran, expelled a number of Iranians from the U.S., and freezing about $8 billion of Iranian assets in the U.S. The Iranian government denied any responsibility for the incident, but their failure to take action against the hostage takers belied the denial. I believe that there is one biblical or Christian worldview. This could be referred to as the basic Christian worldview. It reflects the basic principles of Christianity. Dr. Henderson gives a brief explanation of authentic and holistic Christianity in his presentation. I agree with what Dr. Henderson said, authentic Christianity is Christ centered and biblically based .[1] My Christian worldview should be characterized, by who I am in Christ and what I know to be biblical. Romans 12:2 says, And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. [2] I want God to shape my worldview, rather than have it shaped by this world. Dr. Henderson said, A worldview contains a person s answers to the most important questions in life. [3] Christians are given the answers to those questions through the Word of God. We believe that the Word of God is authoritative. Dr. Henderson said, The Bible is the Word of God, as Scripture, as what has been written down, as the Holy Spirit enabled and guided holy people to write it. By enumerating punishments for certain crimes the code removes ambiguity and combined with its relatively harsh penalties, especially on lower class citizens, served as an effective deterrent. More profoundly however, Hammurabi s code formally shifted justice seeking responsibilities from the individual to the state. It is because justice is not rigidly defined that some opt to pursue justice by means unsanctioned by the state. In Ian McEwan s Atonement, Michael Chabon s Wonder Boys and Louise Erdrich s The Round House the legal system fails to produce just outcomes. In Atonement one of the main characters, Robbie is convicted of raping a young girl, when in fact he is innocent. Despite only unsubstantiated evidence from a 13 year old girl, he is convicted. Only after the judicial system had failed did the girl wish to recant her former account, but by then it was too late. If you were lying then, why should a court believe you now? There are no new facts, and you re an unreliable witness (McEwan 82). In this unjust sentencing of an innocent man, Atonement shows that not only does the legal system sometimes err, but that these errors are often particularly difficult to ameliorate. Unfortunately this is not an anomaly. One in nine people sentenced to death row were later exonerated showing that sometimes instead of being the solvency for wrongdoings, the legal system can be the source (Stevenson). While Atonement showed the legal system s complicity in some injustices, in both Wonder Boys and The Round House the legal system s failure to serve justice can be seen. A Research Study On Laboratory LABORATORY SECTIONS In contrast to the often passive lecture environment, laboratory classes provide an opportunity for active hands on learning, where students can apply and engage with the material learned in lecture. For many students, labs are where their enthusiasm and interest in the material is stimulated. However, if the experiments appear unconnected to the theory learned in class, or unrelated to everyday life or the student s major, they can be viewed as busy work: come to class, follow a set procedure, collect data, fill in datasheet, discuss the results then repeat the next week, rather than a learning opportunity. This is especially true of introductory labs were students are learning basic procedures. Consequently, a well prepared TA who clearly explains the relevance of the experiment can have a large impact is how the lab is perceived. TAs are also responsible for ensuring safe working practices. A major component of this is being prepared. Before the semester starts, read all relevant safety manuals. In addition, spend some time in the laboratory to learn the location and proper operation of all safety equipment, e.g. fire extinguishers, safety shower, eye wash, first aid kit.
