Compare And Contrast Heroes In Vietnam And American Culture
Heroes and their role in creating the unique of culture
If someone tells you that you are a hero, would you believe that? It probably sounds insane but there is
no limitation in the way people define view own heroes. They might be the superhero with
superpower, only appearing when people in danger and save them. They could be the revolutionary
who create a milestone that make future a better place to live. Or they are your neighbor, family or
friends ordinary who sacrificed their own benefit and silently contribute to society. Heroes have
become a part of the culture in many countries. Different countries value different qualities in the way
they view their heroes. I have found some interesting contrasts and similarities between Hero in where
I come from Vietnam and In America. In both culture, heroes forgo their personal benefit to serve their
country but heroes in Vietnam have done big things because they are put in the situation while the
American enjoy doing it.
Heroes in Vietnam and in America have many things in common but the most significant and
respectable is how they use they big power that they have to help their people and their country. In
other words, they are sacrificed for others. Since the beginning of human being, the community had
assigned men who have the advantage of physical strength to be the one who went out to hunt while
women stayed at home and collected fruits because of their natural flexible. Gradually developing

The Influence Of Experimental Values On Machined Machines
experimental values. Finally it was concluded that the predicted values are close to the experimental
values [21]. Sheik Ahmad et al investigated the influence of spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut
for edge trimming of CFRP composites on machined surface quality used by diamond abrasive
cutters. Here the cutting forces, surface roughness, specific cutting energy and work specimen
temperature were evaluated and analyzed. Lastly, all of these factors are also influenced on machining

Character Analysis Of The Play Our Town By James Naughton
OUR TOWN
Sammie Griffin
Drama1310
November 21, 2017
I watched the play Our Town and I have to say that my views on plays and any kind of art have been
changed forever. It was directed by James Naughton. In this paper I will describe my experience as a
first time play watcher and what I thought about the play and set in general. It was set in 1938, it tells
a story of a small town of Grover s Corner in New Hampshire between 1901 and 1913. It basically
tells the story of everyday life by normal average people and lets say plenty of church s. I believe the
director and set producer are trying to bring you into that world of the early 1900 s. With the clothes
and the way the old man starts telling the play almost transports you there, you almost feel like you
could be at a small town kitchen cleaning and cooking for your polish children. They try to make it as
believable as possible. Just his language, how he says town folk , and in the holla makes you feel
almost cozy inside thinking about your own childhood. I believe them not having a big set made with
all kinds of props makes you feel the bare necessity of life back then, you didn t need much and you
really didn t get much so it brings it back to bare bones of the theatrical performance. The clothes for
the play were perfect, at least in my opinion. It looks like what the average person would wear back
then and had no fancy frills or even bright colors. It even showed an average day daughter in her teen
years. I say

Why Casinos Should Be Legalized Gambling
Introduction
For many years, people have spent many hours and large portions of their income at casinos ranging
from Las Vegas, Nevada to Miami, Florida, to some of the reach and luxurious parts of the world. But
what makes casinos so popular in the largest and luxurious areas of the world? It s the income that
casinos have on the economy associated with the location. According to statista.com Casino Industry
Statistics and Facts, casinos have an average revenue of $159.71 billion dollars; 71.1 billion in the
United State of America alone. With such high revenue, many of the casinos are supplying a large
number of jobs, and increasing labor income to nearly $25 billion. Unfortunately for many casinos
they face a bad reputation for individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The monetary effects of authorized betting are substantial and quantifiable. Casino gambling has
become a very popular, widely available form of entertainment in the United States and many other
countries. The industry has spread rapidly in the last 20 years but, relative to its size worldwide, there
has been little scientific analysis of the social and economic effects of gambling (Walker, Douglas M.,
and John D. Jackson). What we do know is that there are fundamental monetary effects incorporated
in the development of a casino club which prompts numerous occupations for development workers
and suppliers. From representatives to staff the gambling club, and the suppliers for a continuous
clubhouse, the establishment of a casino presents a number of jobs. Following this introduction of new
jobs other multipliers, like the newly employed using their paycheck to gamble or to even buy
anything regenerates that income into the general economy. Be that as it may, in light of the fact that a
betting venture makes a ton of occupations and a vast office is fabricated doesn t mean the monetary
effects are sure. Non financial effects, for example, social expenses are typically elusive, hard to
gauge, and on equalization

Persuasive Essay On Nascar
Besides most of the gimmicks and the questionable yellow flags the sport of NASCAR is has issues
that need to be addressed. NASCAR will have a totally different look within about 7 years. With fan
favorites like Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman and of course Redneck
Jesus Dale Earnhardt Jr all entering the late stages of there career there is a group of drivers in the
lower series ready to replace them. The problem is that many of these drivers in the lower series are
only there because of there last name or how rich there parents are. Virtually none of these drivers
have anything unique about them. Brad Keselowski ran his family bankrupt trying to make it, Rick
Allen stated that Carl Edwards handed business cards ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If you go on YouTube and watch how the races were broadcast in the 1980s and 1990s you ll see there
were no gimmicks, no pre race concerts, no interviews with celebrities pretending to like NASCAR
(unless they were giving the command to start engines which are much better than seeing a CEO or
vice president do it), no specials featuring a feel good or sob story from someone in NASCAR. It was
about one thing and that was the race itself. They interviewed a few drivers, told any news going on in
the sport and that was it, no B.S. NASCAR could really learn a lot from Formula Ones pre race show.
One thing that is incredibly missed in the broad cast presentation is the starting lineup. The 1988
Daytona 500 starting lineup presentation (which you can see here) is exactly how it should be done. It
makes the races seem more dramatic and epic and even shows the cars too which is important because
it will help new fans identify quickly who is driving what car. Today they go through the starting
lineup in 30 seconds and even stop announcing it sometimes once they get to about 25th place.
Another issue is that there is hardly any variety in the camera angles. For almost the entire race
(except replays) you are seeing the same 5 shots of the race. Every single shot around the turns are
shots from right along the wall. The in car cameras are also getting boring because

Mental Disorders And The United States
Mental disorders affect many people throughout the United States. Although it is not a direct link to
criminal behavior, it is a major risk factor and oftentimes criminal offenders are found to have them.
Mental disorders cause their victims delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, and aggression. The
definition of mental disorder is a vast number of mental conditions, ranging from the mild to the
serious that impede one s ability to function. Sometimes with the more serious disorders may absolve
an individual of criminal responsibility (Bartol, A Bartol, C, 2014). There are several different kinds of
mental disorders including but not limited to schizophrenia, psychopathy, depressive disorders, and
antisocial personality disorder (Bartol, A Bartol, C, 2014). In this paper, each different kind of mental
disorder will be discussed along with the discussing the fallacy of the public believing that many
people get off with the not guilty by reason of insanity plea. It is hypothesized that individuals who
display mental disorders are at a greater risk to commit criminal offenses. The literature reviews that
follow describe each type of mental disorder and types of crime as a result of them. They will also
describe the not guilty by reason of insanity plea.
Schizophrenia crime There are several different subtypes of schizophrenics which include the
disorganized type, catatonic type, paranoid type, undifferentiated type, and the residual type. Of all
these types, the paranoid

The Problem Of Low Back Pain
Low back pain is one of the major causes for not only days lost at work, but also the early exit from
the field of nursing. This can potentially be a major concern to address as policymakers and healthcare
experts look to solve the nursing shortage problem. Project Back to Back is one initiative aimed at
addressing this issue. It seeks to reduce the prevalence of low back pain experienced by nurses by
introducing continual training in proper patient handling and Dru yoga classes to nurses working in
the hospital facilities that are a part of the Mount Sinai Hospital System.
In the United States, low back pain is singled out as the most common reason for time lost at work
after the common cold, the third most common condition leading to surgical procedures, and the fifth
most common reason for hospital visits (United States Department of Health and Human Services
(HHS), Healthy People 2020, n.d.). Reports show that musculoskeletal disorders account for
approximately$240 billion in the United States annual healthcare expenditure, with over $100 billion
going to treat low back pain alone (Crow Willis, 2009). Low back pain, according to Manek and
MacGregor (2005), is defined as pain, muscle tension, or stiffness localized below the costal margin
and above the inferior gluteal folds, with or without leg pain (sciatica) (p. 134). It can be classified as
either specific or nonspecific, but the majority of the cases, approximately 90%, are nonspecific as

Application Of Ecological System Theory
Ayaan Hirsi Ali was born in Mogadishu, Somalia where she spent her early childhood years living
with her mother, brother, sister, and grandmother. Her father at that time was in prison. Although he
does escape prison and ends up living in Ethiopia for a while before moving to Saudi Arabia. When he
moves to Saudi Arabia his family eventually moves there to join him.
Ayaan Hirsi Ali was raised in a strict Muslim family. She has endured civil war, female mutilation,
brutal beatings, and a life of moving from one troubled country to another country that were both
unstable and ruled by dictators.

Protective factors. There aren t a lot of protective factors for Ayaan Hirsi Ali within her microsystem.
One protective factor that I found involved her sister. Ayaan s sister would try to help her learn what
was appropriate and what wasn t in their culture. By doing this her sister was trying to help her stay
out of trouble or in this case to keep the number of times she was beaten to a minimum.
Later on in her life she went to Germany to visit relatives while waiting for her visa to go to Canada. It
is then that she decides to run away after remembering the story a friend told her about how her and
her husband traveled together and become refugees in Holland. So she gets a train ticket to
Amsterdam. She was aware of the risk that this could either be a start to a better life or a miserable

Tutankhamun Burial
Ancient Egypt revolved around the belief that one was reborn after death and would be guaranteed
eternal life if the body was preserved and buried properly. Tutankhamun became a pharaoh of Egypt at
the age of nine during the 18th Dynasty. His rain lasted approximately 10 years when he died
unexpectedly and consequently his tomb and burial was rushed leaving him with a much smaller and
less impressive tomb that was common for 18th dynasty tombs. Tutankhamun s tomb was discovered
still sealed by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings. Evidently, as to
the undersized scale of the tomb it was hardly touched by grave robbers as every other tomb had been,

These paintings, through limited, show evidence that Tutankhamun s funeral preparations comply with
Osirin burial customs. The paintings depict scenes of Tutankhamun s preparation and voyage to the
afterworld. The northern wall of the burial room portray scenes from the Opening of the mouth
ceremony and Tutankhamun, followed by his Ka, being greeted by Osiris. The Opening of the mouth
ceremony was perfumed by Ay, Tutankhamun s successor as he had no heirs to the throne, and it
allowed the deceased to be reborn again in the afterlife and keep all his senses. Tutankhamun is
greeted by the sky goddess Nut who is a symbol of resurrection, representing the dead pharaoh being
reborn into the afterlife. A scarab beetles is displayed above a solar boat on the wast wall symbolising
new life and the twelve baboon deities represent the hours of the night the pharaoh must travel to be
reborn. On the southern wall of the burial room Tutankhamun is pictured being welcomed to the
afterlife by Isis, Horus and Anubis. Both Horus and Anubis are holding Ankhs which convey
Tutankhamun s eternal life in the afterworld. Each wall depicts a different scenes with the similar
theme of resurrection, new life and eternal life, all concepts associated with Osirian funerary

Why Do People Like To Show Their Dogs
here are many reasons why people like to show their dogs and it is a rewarding practice for individuals
and kennels alike. You might like to enter your dog for obedience trials because he enjoys it and you
are proud of him; you might like the competition element of shows or it may be that you just like to be
around fellow dog owners, comparing your dogs. There are two main categories of shows: a) Pedigree
dog shows requiring you to demonstrate that your dog matches the breed standards set by the kennel
club in which your dog is registered and b) All dog trial and events, irrespective of breed, registration
or heritage where your dog will be judged solely on his ability to perform the activity for which he is
entered.

Countries such as the USA, Canada, the UK and Australia have kennel clubs which organize events
locally, nationally and internationally. Only pedigrees can be registered in these clubs and participate
in the shows. No crossbreeds are allowed. Kennel clubs outside of the USA place various breeds in
different categories but none of them will recognize crossbreeds or dogs that do not have proper
registration papers.
Make sure that you know the standards set for your breed by the kennel club where your dog is
registered. Read as much as you can about their standards because if you get it wrong, you may be
disqualified from entering or participating in the show.
Visit as many shows and events as you can and observe the adjudicators or judges. Note down
anything the judges say about competitors at the time they have made their selections of winners. If
you know what the judges like you can take special care to train your dog so that he will please the
judges. Naturally judges are bound to make their decision based on the standards that have been set by
a kennel club, but each judge will place their own interpretation on those

The Lament Of The Queen Of Sweden
The Lament of the Queen of Sweden
Luigi Rossi was employed in the Borghese court in Rome in 1620. The seventeenth century in Rome
marked an increase in the level of musical productivity. Some of the finest musicians including
Frescobaldi, Marlo Mazzocchi, Savioni and Carissimi were active in Rome at this time. Another
incredibly important patron of Rossi was Antonio Barberini who was very impressed by Rossi s
works. Rossi s music circulated in France in the early 1640s as well. In 1641, Ottavio Castelli sent
Cardinal Richelieu a copy of Ferito un cavaliere, (a Wounded Knight) recommending it to Jules
Mazarin. This piece was composed by Rossi as a lament of the Queen of Sweden set to a text by Fabio
della Corgna, where the Queen Maria Eleanora ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Musically, the piece employs the use of a ground bass the descending tetra chord which had by this
time begun to be associated almost exclusively with the lament. The spiraling and constant downward
motion of the ground bass with the repetitive harmonies of the frustrated cadence became so strongly
associated with the genre of laments that the use of heightened rhetoric or further embellishments was
not necessary for the despair and the intense emotions of the lament to be heard and identified. The
ground bass alone became the fundamental basis of laments. Lamento del la Regina di Suezia in
particular is set as versi sciolti recitative form throughout the entire piece. It is similar to Barbara
Strozzi s lament Lagrime mie in that both pieces have a musical and textual refrain. The refrain of the
Queen of Sweden lament seems to be the most emotionally charged lines of the piece whereby she
sings in a sort of emotional frenzy Give me someone, for pity s sake, who will kill me! (datemi per
pietade un che m uccida) The music of the refrain also corresponds with the emotions using affective
dissonances The idea that the queen wishes for someone to kill her rather than live in a world without
her King husband is an indicator of how distraught and hysterical she had become and hints at her
mental instability in the period after his death. The lament itself is moving and effective. As rage
overcomes the queen at the injustice of Gustavus death she implores the people to take up arms and
submerge the earth in torrents of blood, may every town be torched at your hands, may every province
burn, kill, wound, do not spare the wicked ones in order to avenge his death. The music changes to
highlight her rage and then her incessant despair appropriately matching her tone lending a unique air

each ballad can last from three to five minutes depending on how many people continue to sing. At

Differences Between Fashion And Fashion
The history of clothing dates back from the beginning of the human race, which is around 4026 B.C.
You may wonder, what s the difference between fashion and clothing? Clothing is just something to
cover the body, but fashion is so much more. Fashion represents an individual and can be a beautiful
piece of art. Fashion changes with society and is usually a very popular trend that many people at a
time follow. For this reason, the art of fashion diffused in Europe in 400 C.E. Before 400 C.E. Western
Europe was under Barbarian control, consequently, Eastern Europe and parts of Asia flourished in
fashion. Dress in the Byzantium Empire (what is now Istanbul, Turkey) was a blend of Roman and
Eastern Asian styles. The Eastern Asian style contributed many elaborate ornaments and silk. This
diffused into Rome through the new fashion trends relating to embroidery and woven designs found in
short tunics and elaborate outer garments. These styles of the Byzantine court continued to influence
all the courts of Western Europe from about 400 to 900 C.E. up until the European economy began to
recover, and Western Europe gained independence from previous Barbarian control. In this span of
500 years, the development of fashion in Europe was somewhat obscure. This was because 400 to 900
C.E. was know as the dark ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire. We ll skim over the dark ages,
since men and women s fashion remained pretty basic and constant throughout that time. Women s
and men s

Word Accuracy And Word Frequency Essay
This study is a conceptualized replication of the Howes and Solomon (1951) experiment investigating
word accuracy and word frequency in short duration trials. It is hypothesized that words that appear
more often in printed text (easier to access in the lexicon) will be more accurately identified rather
than words that appear less commonly. A total of 83 participants in the study were presented with
words taken from the Throndike Lorge database. The words were presented for one second with a six
second rest in the middle. This was done sixty times and the results suggest a moderate strong
relationship between word accuracy and frequency. Though there are multiple factors that may have
influenced these results. Introduction Word recognition involves an individual s ability to identify
words independently without requiring related words for contextual help. A widely examined topic in
the field of cognitive psychology, it deals with understanding printed letters as a word which has been
kept in the lexicon. The word frequency effect is important in the recognition of words. It suggests
more common words in printed language are easier, faster and more accurate to distinguish than words
that appear less frequently. Outlined in their journal article, Howes and Solomon utilized Thorndike
Lorge s word count for word frequency and measured the threshold of recognition. They found
correlation coefficients of .68 to .75 between word frequency and threshold or duration.

Race And Reunion Sparknotes
As David Blight says in his novel, Race and Reunion, after the Civil War and emancipation,
Americans were faced with the overwhelming task of trying to understand the relationship between
two profound ideas healing and justice. While he admits that both had to occur on some level, healing
from the war was not the same proposition for many whites, especially veterans, as doing justice for
the millions of emancipated slaves and their descendants (Blight 3). Blight claims that African
Americans did not want an apology for slavery, but instead a helping hand. Thus, after the Civil War,
two visions of Civil War memory arose and combined: the reconciliationist vison, which focused on
the issue of dealing with the dead from the battlefields, hospitals, and prisons, and the emancipationist
vision, which focused on African Americans remembrance of their own freedom and in conceptions of
the war as the liberation of [African Americans] to citizenship and Constitutional equality (Blight 2).
The era of Reconstruction was a fourteen year period following the Civil War filled with political and
constitutional strife, extreme suffering, grand political ambitions and huge turns in race relations and
human rights (Blight 32). During this period, many Americans realized that remembering the war
became, with time, easier than struggling over the enduring ideas for which those battles had been
fought (Blight 31). To people such as Frederick Douglass, a reborn United States could not

The Theories Of Evolution Of The Human Population
The Theories of Evolution The human population has always wondered where they came from, or
how they came to be. Why do they have certain characteristics that distinguish them from other
species, or how did they acquire these characteristics? Why do they have similar traits to other
species? There are many questions about the existence of the human population that they would love
to have the answer to. Unfortunately, there is not an answer that is a proven fact. Luckily, there are
theories that try to explain where humans and other species evolved from. The two well known
theories of evolution are accredited to Jean Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. Jean Baptiste
Lamarck developed the theory of acquired characteristics, which is often known as Lamarckism
(Stanford 17). Lamarck s theory stated that, all organisms make adjustments to their environment
during their lifetime that could be passed on to their offspring, making those offspring better adapted
to their environment (Stanford 17). Lamarck says that organisms adapt to their environment during
their lives and the characteristics that they acquire during their lifetime are passed off to their
offspring; The offspring are now better adapted to the environment. Charles Darwin had a different
approach in his theory of evolution. Darwin believed in his theory of evolution by natural selection.
Natural selection is the idea that individuals with favorable variations would survive and reproduce,
but those with

Emily Grierson s Resistance Of Change
The story of Emily Grierson is a hauntingly gothic approach on the resistance of change. It starts out
announcing Emily s funeral is an obligation for the town and the process of the selfish people who
would only go for their own benefit. The reader is then transported through time over decades of this
southern woman s life while learning about her strange habits and how she became the conversation of
many in the town. Everyone has quirks. Emily s just aren t the normal ones typically heard from a
neighbor. Refusing to pay taxes, buying giant amounts of poison, and even having a house that
radiates an odor even from the outside. After her funeral, the town discovers Emily s dark past and
how everything was much worse than they imagined. Emily was an interesting woman. Her habits
drew attention from everybody in town and was the hot topic for conversation. Yet, nobody knew
anything more about Emily other than the gossip spreading around. The selfishness of the commotion
of a new thing to say poor Emily for had become very worn out by the time her funeral came around,
which caused even more discussion. People poured into her abandoned house for the funeral, but not
for the normal reasons. The only motivation these people had was nobody had seen the inside of her
house for quite some time. Emily had shut herself out from the world ... Show more content on

Motherly Love Essay
Motherly Love
In the three stories we read by Flannery O Connor; The Comforts of Home , Everything That Rises
Must Converge , and The Enduring Chill , the major relationship portrayed was between mothers and
their hypersensitive sons. While all of the major characters, the sons, were noticeably similar, the
lesser characters of the mothers were also very alike in many ways. Many of their views, gestures and
outward qualities paralleled throughout the stories. After rereading all of the stories again I came to
the realization that the mothers O Connor wrote in her stories were variations of the same person.
One of the qualities that jump out first is that all three mothers are ... Show more content on

The boys feel that either their mother did not do a good enough job raising them or that she has
disrupted the proper pace of their lives. This is apparent in all the boys but especially confusing in the
case of Julian. At the beginning of the story he says he could have stood his lot better if she [his
mother] had been an old hag who drank and screamed at him (5) yet later talks about how there was
no reason for her to think she could always depend on him (14). While he feels that she raised him
well, he does not want her to feel that he will be there for her like she seems to have been there for
him. Asbury makes it very clear that he feels his mother was the unnerving force that lead to the
demise of his life. Upon his death, he wanted his mother to read a letter her wrote to her about what
she had done to him (91) but thought, that his mother would not understand the letter at once... he
thought she would be able to see that he forgave her for all that she had done to him (91). This
statement, like Julian s is not truly supported in any way. It appears in both stories that the boys
mothers did everything they possible could to give their children the best of life. Thomas, on the other
hand, does not feel quite as much observable loathing to his mother and says that he loved his mother.
He loved her because it was his nature to do so, but there were times when he could not endure her
love for him (118). Unlike the other

Analysis Of The Film Shawshank Redemption
My chosen scene from the film Shawshank Redemption directed by Frank Darabont, is the scene
where Andy escapes from the prison. The scene begins with the guards discovering Andy has escaped
and transitions into a flashback of how Andy plotted and executed his escape. Key film techniques in
the film are the uses of camera shots/movement, sound, dialogue and symbols. All of these techniques
create an intense atmosphere and draw attention to the hidden meanings and messages present in this
scene and the film itself, such as what the rocks and posters mean to Andy on a deeper meaning,
outside of just being a distraction. The camera shots and movement in the film are primarily used to
emphasize how characters are feeling, highlighting things that are important to both Andy and the
audience, and to keep the pace of the film. Close ups in this scene are used to reveal the strong
emotions felt by the characters. After the opening of the scene we see a close up of Red looking to
Any s cell. The director does this to show Red s profound concern for Andy, as it is implied earlier on
in the film, when Andy is in his scene holding a length of rope, that he might commit suicide. This
close up made me feel concern for Andy as well, as it made Andy s plight feel more real. The director
also uses camerawork to draw attention to important details, notably tilts and zooms. Shortly after
Andy is found missing, we see a tilt from the Warden finding Andy s shoes in his box, to the Warden s

number of species found in the agriculture stream. Figure 2. The biotic index of the three types of

individuals. The forest stream had the lowest FBI value, followed by the urban stream and the

agriculture, and urban streams, respectively. The major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, there is a trend in the number of species found in each stream type based on the riparian
habitat. As the amount of organic pollution increased, there should have been a decrease in the species
richness of the streams. Species richness also has an effect on the processing of leaf material. Less
species richness due to organic pollution forces the litter breakdown to be dependent on microbial
activity rather than shredders (Masese et al. 2014). In addition, microbial breakdown of leaf litter is
accelerated by the presence of nutrients, which is high in agricultural streams (Masese et al. 2014).
Therefore, the species richness of the agricultural stream should have been low and leaf processing
would be controlled by bacteria. Although the agricultural stream had the highest species richness, the
relative frequency of shredders was very low compared to the other functional feeding groups shown
in Figure 3. Likewise, due to the organic pollution present in urban streams, it would be expected to
have a low species richness and thus any leaf material would be processed by microbes as well.
Furthermore, the forest stream should have had the highest species richness, which would in turn
impact leaf processing by having the shredders drive leaf litter breakdown rather than microbes. The
Family Biotic Index describes the water quality of a stream by averaging the tolerance values of all the
individuals that were sampled (Hilsenhoff 1988). Based on the equation,

Battle Of Lone Pine Essay
The Battle of Lone Pine was an attack diverting the Turkish army allowing the ANZAC s to reach
high ground at Chanuk Bair and Hill 971 in 1915. The Battle met the criteria of a just war using the
principles of no means malum in se, proportionality/military necessity and distinction. By adapting the
attack to these just war criteria, the ANZAC s were successful against the Turkish army and gained
them the high ground.
The first criteria, no means malum in se which is to not use weapons or methods of warfare which are
considered evil was adapted into the battle as no weapons which are considered evil were used. The

The Human Body In Art
The human body is one of the most popular subjects of art throughout time, and the depictions of the
body are constantly changing and evolving throughout the ages. With different ideals and thoughts
that are popular in society, there are a number of different portrayals of the human body, and three of
them are Michelangelo s David, Millais Ophelia and Cindy Sherman s Untitled Film Still #35.
Michelangelo s David is a masterpiece and one of the most recognizable statues in the entire world
of art. Standing 13 feet tall, the double life sized David is depicted patiently waiting for battle,
prepped with slingshot in one hand and stone in the other. The human body is glorified in this piece,
with every detail being showered in beauty and aesthetics that were viewed as beautiful at the time.
The detail is astounding, his veins are visible in his arms and hands as he clutches the stones with one
hand and the slingshot in the other, his hands and his head appear to be disproportionally large for his
body, because they were deemed more visually important for viewers who would see the statue high
up on the exterior of the cathedral. Also, his left leg, which straddles the rocky base upon which he
stands, appears a big too long for his body, it accentuates the line of this leg as it forms an essential
component in David s contrapposto stance. The classical nude further glorifies the body, as it was
thought as something not to be ashamed of and one of the most beautiful subjects

A totalitarian government depends on subservience because its citizens are completely controlled of
mind and body. History is constantly revised and edited to keep its citizens ignorant, and simple truths
are easily ignored by the populace if told to do so. Constant war is waged by totalitarian governments
to have a reason to use up its resources and keep its citizens in a suppressed state. The citizens of
totalitarian governments are under constant monitoring, even by their own family members. The
totalitarian state is dependent on all of these factors, and because of that, no freedoms can be given.

Setting is an important aspect of any story, movie, poem and novel. Setting enhances many aspects of

William Faulkner s first Gothic literature story ever written is, A Rose for Emily . Gothic literature
originates from the medieval times in Europe and the United States, specifically during the late
eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Gothic literature emphasizes ghost stories, mysteries and
circumstances often not found in regular stories. It also focuses on a specific theme and setting,
generally a sinister house or a frightening castle, to create a tone and mood of suspense. More
specifically, after the American Civil War in 1866, many Southern writers, such as Faulkner, created a
new genre of writing. Southern gothic is a style of writing that is unique to the Southern States of
South America. Southern Gothic writer s, such as Faulkner, took the depressing, defeated and weary
Southern culture in America, and used it as an inspiration to write. For instance, Faulkner uses Emily
Grierson, the protagonist of A Rose for Emily , to emphasize unpleasant and dark aspects of the
Southern gothic culture.
The standard definition of the traditional gothic novel tends to refer to the three elements: a setting in
an ancestral house, real or perceived occult events, and a women at risk (Palmer 123).
The home of Emily Grierson is where the majority of the story takes place. The home is a significant
setting because of the detrimental effects time as on it. Without a doubt, as described in the story, the
house was once a beautiful estate,

International Research And Development At The High...
International research and development are being conducted to come across the high capacity demand
in transport network, mostly for 100 G Ethernet and beyond. The two main subjects that need to be
identified to raise the data rate to 100 Gb/s per wavelength are.
 Bandwidth expansion
One direct method for increasing the capacity of a system is to raise the transmission bandwidth per
wavelength either optically or electronically. In optical communication, there are two broadly used
techniques for increasing the capacity of the transmission. The first technique is to spread out the
bandwidth by adding numerous optical carriers. This technique has already been slow and deployed
and it is known as Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). Wavelength Division Multiplexing can
benefit to extend the transmission bandwidth by adding various transceivers for the current optical
fiber links deprived of the need to install other fiber links. WDM is considered as one of the most cost
effective methods to raise the optical fiber link quantity. The second technique is to extend the
electronic bandwidth per wavelength relying on the CMOS technology.
However, the present digital to analog converters (DAC)/ (ADC) can only support upto 6 GHz
bandwidth. It became a challenge to realize 100 Gb/s transmission in a cost effective manner. But,
recently DAC/ADC realized more than 30 GS/s with more than a 20 GHz analog bandwidth. This can
support a 100 Gb/s transmission.

Mummification And Death Rituals Of Ancient Egypt
In ancient Egypt, scarabs (a sacred large dung beetle from the Mediterranean area) first appeared in
the late Old Kingdom (c. 2575 c. 2130 BCE) and were used for the living, as a sign of good luck.
Then when they evolved from the so called button seals scarabs, they remained rare until Middle
Kingdom times (1938 c. 1630 BCE). This was because they were now being associated with the
afterlife and death. Some were used simply as ornaments and decoration, while others were purely
sacred in purpose, such as the large basalt heart scarabs of the New Kingdom (1539 1075 BCE). Later
they were also placed in the bandages of mummies and were symbolically identified with the heart of
the deceased. (Lace, William. Mummification and Death Rituals of Ancient

Major Depressive Disorder ( Mdd )
Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) is currently labeled one of the world s greatest health
problems, with an estimated prevalence of 4.7% and the second highest cause of years lived with a
disability in 2010. The economic impact on patients with MDD is extensive particularly in patients
that do not respond to treatment. Severe MDD can lead to loss of productivity and increase mortality.
There remain several antidepressant treatments (ADTs) available to patients with MDD, but there is a
significant minority that do not respond to first line treatments. Secondary treatment options, including
changing the current ADT or adding another ADT to the treatment regimen, such as a second
generation antipsychotic. Currently, aripiprazole and quetiapine are the approved therapies in the
United States for unresponsive MDD patients, including the adjunctive usage of fluoxetine and
olanzapine. Their efficacy has been proven countless times in randomized controlled trials of these
agents, but their tolerability profiles has limited their clinical usage. Side effects fluctuate between
medications, but most regularly comprise of akathisia for aripiprazole, increased appetite and weight
gain for olanzapine fluoxetine combination, and excessive sedation for quetiapine. Weight gain can be
a particularly menacing side effect as it increases a patient s overall risk of metabolic abnormalities;

Napoleonic wars (Spodek 664). Even watching the American Civil War from afar could not have
prepared Europe and the young men that served for the devastation WWI brought. The poems
described the war as a collection of numbed men, simply waiting to die, lines of grey, muttering faces.
Men who had joined to serve their country had now become disillusioned with the nobility of dying
for their country, wondering if the suffering both in and out of the trenches

  • 2. Compare And Contrast Heroes In Vietnam And American Culture Heroes and their role in creating the unique of culture If someone tells you that you are a hero, would you believe that? It probably sounds insane but there is no limitation in the way people define view own heroes. They might be the superhero with superpower, only appearing when people in danger and save them. They could be the revolutionary who create a milestone that make future a better place to live. Or they are your neighbor, family or friends ordinary who sacrificed their own benefit and silently contribute to society. Heroes have become a part of the culture in many countries. Different countries value different qualities in the way they view their heroes. I have found some interesting contrasts and similarities between Hero in where I come from Vietnam and In America. In both culture, heroes forgo their personal benefit to serve their country but heroes in Vietnam have done big things because they are put in the situation while the American enjoy doing it. Heroes in Vietnam and in America have many things in common but the most significant and respectable is how they use they big power that they have to help their people and their country. In other words, they are sacrificed for others. Since the beginning of human being, the community had assigned men who have the advantage of physical strength to be the one who went out to hunt while women stayed at home and collected fruits because of their natural flexible. • 3. The Influence Of Experimental Values On Machined Machines experimental values. Finally it was concluded that the predicted values are close to the experimental values [21]. Sheik Ahmad et al investigated the influence of spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut for edge trimming of CFRP composites on machined surface quality used by diamond abrasive cutters. Here the cutting forces, surface roughness, specific cutting energy and work specimen temperature were evaluated and analyzed. Lastly, all of these factors are also influenced on machining responses [22]. • 4. Character Analysis Of The Play Our Town By James Naughton OUR TOWN Sammie Griffin Drama1310 November 21, 2017 I watched the play Our Town and I have to say that my views on plays and any kind of art have been changed forever. It was directed by James Naughton. In this paper I will describe my experience as a first time play watcher and what I thought about the play and set in general. It was set in 1938, it tells a story of a small town of Grover s Corner in New Hampshire between 1901 and 1913. It basically tells the story of everyday life by normal average people and lets say plenty of church s. I believe the director and set producer are trying to bring you into that world of the early 1900 s. With the clothes and the way the old man starts telling the play almost transports you there, you almost feel like you could be at a small town kitchen cleaning and cooking for your polish children. They try to make it as believable as possible. Just his language, how he says town folk , and in the holla makes you feel almost cozy inside thinking about your own childhood. I believe them not having a big set made with all kinds of props makes you feel the bare necessity of life back then, you didn t need much and you really didn t get much so it brings it back to bare bones of the theatrical performance. The clothes for the play were perfect, at least in my opinion. It looks like what the average person would wear back then and had no fancy frills or even bright colors. It even showed an average day daughter in her teen years. I say ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Why Casinos Should Be Legalized Gambling Introduction For many years, people have spent many hours and large portions of their income at casinos ranging from Las Vegas, Nevada to Miami, Florida, to some of the reach and luxurious parts of the world. But what makes casinos so popular in the largest and luxurious areas of the world? It s the income that casinos have on the economy associated with the location. According to statista.com Casino Industry Statistics and Facts, casinos have an average revenue of $159.71 billion dollars; 71.1 billion in the United State of America alone. With such high revenue, many of the casinos are supplying a large number of jobs, and increasing labor income to nearly $25 billion. Unfortunately for many casinos they face a bad reputation for individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The monetary effects of authorized betting are substantial and quantifiable. Casino gambling has become a very popular, widely available form of entertainment in the United States and many other countries. The industry has spread rapidly in the last 20 years but, relative to its size worldwide, there has been little scientific analysis of the social and economic effects of gambling (Walker, Douglas M., and John D. Jackson). What we do know is that there are fundamental monetary effects incorporated in the development of a casino club which prompts numerous occupations for development workers and suppliers. From representatives to staff the gambling club, and the suppliers for a continuous clubhouse, the establishment of a casino presents a number of jobs. Following this introduction of new jobs other multipliers, like the newly employed using their paycheck to gamble or to even buy anything regenerates that income into the general economy. Be that as it may, in light of the fact that a betting venture makes a ton of occupations and a vast office is fabricated doesn t mean the monetary effects are sure. Non financial effects, for example, social expenses are typically elusive, hard to gauge, and on equalization ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Persuasive Essay On Nascar Besides most of the gimmicks and the questionable yellow flags the sport of NASCAR is has issues that need to be addressed. NASCAR will have a totally different look within about 7 years. With fan favorites like Matt Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman and of course Redneck Jesus Dale Earnhardt Jr all entering the late stages of there career there is a group of drivers in the lower series ready to replace them. The problem is that many of these drivers in the lower series are only there because of there last name or how rich there parents are. Virtually none of these drivers have anything unique about them. If you go on YouTube and watch how the races were broadcast in the 1980s and 1990s you ll see there were no gimmicks, no pre race concerts, no interviews with celebrities pretending to like NASCAR (unless they were giving the command to start engines which are much better than seeing a CEO or vice president do it), no specials featuring a feel good or sob story from someone in NASCAR. It was about one thing and that was the race itself. They interviewed a few drivers, told any news going on in the sport and that was it, no B.S. NASCAR could really learn a lot from Formula Ones pre race show. One thing that is incredibly missed in the broad cast presentation is the starting lineup. The 1988 Daytona 500 starting lineup presentation (which you can see here) is exactly how it should be done. It makes the races seem more dramatic and epic and even shows the cars too which is important because it will help new fans identify quickly who is driving what car. Today they go through the starting lineup in 30 seconds and even stop announcing it sometimes once they get to about 25th place. Another issue is that there is hardly any variety in the camera angles. For almost the entire race (except replays) you are seeing the same 5 shots of the race. Every single shot around the turns are shots from right along the wall. The in car cameras are also getting boring because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Mental Disorders And The United States Mental disorders affect many people throughout the United States. Although it is not a direct link to criminal behavior, it is a major risk factor and oftentimes criminal offenders are found to have them. Mental disorders cause their victims delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, and aggression. The definition of mental disorder is a vast number of mental conditions, ranging from the mild to the serious that impede one s ability to function. Sometimes with the more serious disorders may absolve an individual of criminal responsibility (Bartol, A Bartol, C, 2014). There are several different kinds of mental disorders including but not limited to schizophrenia, psychopathy, depressive disorders, and antisocial personality disorder (Bartol, A Bartol, C, 2014). In this paper, each different kind of mental disorder will be discussed along with the discussing the fallacy of the public believing that many people get off with the not guilty by reason of insanity plea. It is hypothesized that individuals who display mental disorders are at a greater risk to commit criminal offenses. The literature reviews that follow describe each type of mental disorder and types of crime as a result of them. They will also describe the not guilty by reason of insanity plea. • 10. The Problem Of Low Back Pain Low back pain is one of the major causes for not only days lost at work, but also the early exit from the field of nursing. This can potentially be a major concern to address as policymakers and healthcare experts look to solve the nursing shortage problem. Project Back to Back is one initiative aimed at addressing this issue. It seeks to reduce the prevalence of low back pain experienced by nurses by introducing continual training in proper patient handling and Dru yoga classes to nurses working in the hospital facilities that are a part of the Mount Sinai Hospital System. In the United States, low back pain is singled out as the most common reason for time lost at work after the common cold, the third most common condition leading to surgical procedures, and the fifth most common reason for hospital visits (United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Healthy People 2020, n.d.). Reports show that musculoskeletal disorders account for approximately$240 billion in the United States annual healthcare expenditure, with over $100 billion going to treat low back pain alone (Crow Willis, 2009). Low back pain, according to Manek and MacGregor (2005), is defined as pain, muscle tension, or stiffness localized below the costal margin and above the inferior gluteal folds, with or without leg pain (sciatica) (p. 134). • 12. Tutankhamun Burial Ancient Egypt revolved around the belief that one was reborn after death and would be guaranteed eternal life if the body was preserved and buried properly. Tutankhamun became a pharaoh of Egypt at the age of nine during the 18th Dynasty. His rain lasted approximately 10 years when he died unexpectedly and consequently his tomb and burial was rushed leaving him with a much smaller and less impressive tomb that was common for 18th dynasty tombs. Tutankhamun s tomb was discovered still sealed by British archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings. The seventeenth century in Rome marked an increase in the level of musical productivity. Some of the finest musicians including Frescobaldi, Marlo Mazzocchi, Savioni and Carissimi were active in Rome at this time. Another incredibly important patron of Rossi was Antonio Barberini who was very impressed by Rossi s works. Rossi s music circulated in France in the early 1640s as well. In 1641, Ottavio Castelli sent Cardinal Richelieu a copy of Ferito un cavaliere, (a Wounded Knight) recommending it to Jules Mazarin. Musically, the piece employs the use of a ground bass the descending tetra chord which had by this time begun to be associated almost exclusively with the lament. The spiraling and constant downward motion of the ground bass with the repetitive harmonies of the frustrated cadence became so strongly associated with the genre of laments that the use of heightened rhetoric or further embellishments was not necessary for the despair and the intense emotions of the lament to be heard and identified. The ground bass alone became the fundamental basis of laments. Lamento del la Regina di Suezia in particular is set as versi sciolti recitative form throughout the entire piece. It is similar to Barbara Strozzi s lament Lagrime mie in that both pieces have a musical and textual refrain. The refrain of the Queen of Sweden lament seems to be the most emotionally charged lines of the piece whereby she sings in a sort of emotional frenzy Give me someone, for pity s sake, who will kill me! (datemi per pietade un che m uccida) The music of the refrain also corresponds with the emotions using affective dissonances The idea that the queen wishes for someone to kill her rather than live in a world without her King husband is an indicator of how distraught and hysterical she had become and hints at her mental instability in the period after his death. The lament itself is moving and effective. As rage overcomes the queen at the injustice of Gustavus death she implores the people to take up arms and submerge the earth in torrents of blood, may every town be torched at your hands, may every province burn, kill, wound, do not spare the wicked ones in order to avenge his death. • 16. Differences Between Fashion And Fashion The history of clothing dates back from the beginning of the human race, which is around 4026 B.C. You may wonder, what s the difference between fashion and clothing? Clothing is just something to cover the body, but fashion is so much more. Fashion represents an individual and can be a beautiful piece of art. Fashion changes with society and is usually a very popular trend that many people at a time follow. For this reason, the art of fashion diffused in Europe in 400 C.E. Before 400 C.E. Western Europe was under Barbarian control, consequently, Eastern Europe and parts of Asia flourished in fashion. Dress in the Byzantium Empire (what is now Istanbul, Turkey) was a blend of Roman and Eastern Asian styles. The Eastern Asian style contributed many elaborate ornaments and silk. This diffused into Rome through the new fashion trends relating to embroidery and woven designs found in short tunics and elaborate outer garments. These styles of the Byzantine court continued to influence all the courts of Western Europe from about 400 to 900 C.E. up until the European economy began to recover, and Western Europe gained independence from previous Barbarian control. In this span of 500 years, the development of fashion in Europe was somewhat obscure. This was because 400 to 900 C.E. was know as the dark ages, after the fall of the Roman Empire. We ll skim over the dark ages, since men and women s fashion remained pretty basic and constant throughout that time. Women s and men s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Word Accuracy And Word Frequency Essay This study is a conceptualized replication of the Howes and Solomon (1951) experiment investigating word accuracy and word frequency in short duration trials. It is hypothesized that words that appear more often in printed text (easier to access in the lexicon) will be more accurately identified rather than words that appear less commonly. A total of 83 participants in the study were presented with words taken from the Throndike Lorge database. The words were presented for one second with a six second rest in the middle. This was done sixty times and the results suggest a moderate strong relationship between word accuracy and frequency. Though there are multiple factors that may have influenced these results. Introduction Word recognition involves an individual s ability to identify words independently without requiring related words for contextual help. A widely examined topic in the field of cognitive psychology, it deals with understanding printed letters as a word which has been kept in the lexicon. The word frequency effect is important in the recognition of words. It suggests more common words in printed language are easier, faster and more accurate to distinguish than words that appear less frequently. Outlined in their journal article, Howes and Solomon utilized Thorndike Lorge s word count for word frequency and measured the threshold of recognition. They found correlation coefficients of .68 to .75 between word frequency and threshold or duration. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Race And Reunion Sparknotes As David Blight says in his novel, Race and Reunion, after the Civil War and emancipation, Americans were faced with the overwhelming task of trying to understand the relationship between two profound ideas healing and justice. While he admits that both had to occur on some level, healing from the war was not the same proposition for many whites, especially veterans, as doing justice for the millions of emancipated slaves and their descendants (Blight 3). Blight claims that African Americans did not want an apology for slavery, but instead a helping hand. Thus, after the Civil War, two visions of Civil War memory arose and combined: the reconciliationist vison, which focused on the issue of dealing with the dead from the battlefields, hospitals, and prisons, and the emancipationist vision, which focused on African Americans remembrance of their own freedom and in conceptions of the war as the liberation of [African Americans] to citizenship and Constitutional equality (Blight 2). The era of Reconstruction was a fourteen year period following the Civil War filled with political and constitutional strife, extreme suffering, grand political ambitions and huge turns in race relations and human rights (Blight 32). During this period, many Americans realized that remembering the war became, with time, easier than struggling over the enduring ideas for which those battles had been fought (Blight 31). Why do they have certain characteristics that distinguish them from other species, or how did they acquire these characteristics? Why do they have similar traits to other species? There are many questions about the existence of the human population that they would love to have the answer to. Unfortunately, there is not an answer that is a proven fact. Luckily, there are theories that try to explain where humans and other species evolved from. The two well known theories of evolution are accredited to Jean Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. Jean Baptiste Lamarck developed the theory of acquired characteristics, which is often known as Lamarckism (Stanford 17). Lamarck s theory stated that, all organisms make adjustments to their environment during their lifetime that could be passed on to their offspring, making those offspring better adapted to their environment (Stanford 17). Lamarck says that organisms adapt to their environment during their lives and the characteristics that they acquire during their lifetime are passed off to their offspring; The offspring are now better adapted to the environment. Charles Darwin had a different approach in his theory of evolution. Darwin believed in his theory of evolution by natural selection. While he feels that she raised him well, he does not want her to feel that he will be there for her like she seems to have been there for him. The scene begins with the guards discovering Andy has escaped and transitions into a flashback of how Andy plotted and executed his escape. Key film techniques in the film are the uses of camera shots/movement, sound, dialogue and symbols. All of these techniques create an intense atmosphere and draw attention to the hidden meanings and messages present in this scene and the film itself, such as what the rocks and posters mean to Andy on a deeper meaning, outside of just being a distraction. The camera shots and movement in the film are primarily used to emphasize how characters are feeling, highlighting things that are important to both Andy and the audience, and to keep the pace of the film. Close ups in this scene are used to reveal the strong emotions felt by the characters. After the opening of the scene we see a close up of Red looking to Any s cell. The director does this to show Red s profound concern for Andy, as it is implied earlier on in the film, when Andy is in his scene holding a length of rope, that he might commit suicide. This close up made me feel concern for Andy as well, as it made Andy s plight feel more real. The director also uses camerawork to draw attention to important details, notably tilts and zooms. Therefore, there is a trend in the number of species found in each stream type based on the riparian habitat. As the amount of organic pollution increased, there should have been a decrease in the species richness of the streams. Species richness also has an effect on the processing of leaf material. Less species richness due to organic pollution forces the litter breakdown to be dependent on microbial activity rather than shredders (Masese et al. 2014). In addition, microbial breakdown of leaf litter is accelerated by the presence of nutrients, which is high in agricultural streams (Masese et al. 2014). Therefore, the species richness of the agricultural stream should have been low and leaf processing would be controlled by bacteria. Although the agricultural stream had the highest species richness, the relative frequency of shredders was very low compared to the other functional feeding groups shown in Figure 3. Likewise, due to the organic pollution present in urban streams, it would be expected to have a low species richness and thus any leaf material would be processed by microbes as well. Furthermore, the forest stream should have had the highest species richness, which would in turn impact leaf processing by having the shredders drive leaf litter breakdown rather than microbes. The detail is astounding, his veins are visible in his arms and hands as he clutches the stones with one hand and the slingshot in the other, his hands and his head appear to be disproportionally large for his body, because they were deemed more visually important for viewers who would see the statue high up on the exterior of the cathedral. Also, his left leg, which straddles the rocky base upon which he stands, appears a big too long for his body, it accentuates the line of this leg as it forms an essential component in David s contrapposto stance. The classical nude further glorifies the body, as it was thought as something not to be ashamed of and one of the most beautiful subjects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Down With Big Brother A totalitarian government depends on subservience because its citizens are completely controlled of mind and body. History is constantly revised and edited to keep its citizens ignorant, and simple truths are easily ignored by the populace if told to do so. Constant war is waged by totalitarian governments to have a reason to use up its resources and keep its citizens in a suppressed state. The citizens of totalitarian governments are under constant monitoring, even by their own family members. The totalitarian state is dependent on all of these factors, and because of that, no freedoms can be given. Augustus views himself almost as the greatest among men. After the Julius Creaser was declared a deity he demanded that he be called creaser and saw himself as Divi filius or the son of the divine . Almost like he was trying to use godliness of the former emperor to ensure to be viewed more highly or even be considered a deity himself. Upon Augustus s death, Augustus left behind three scrolls. One of which scrolls instructed to have all of his accomplishments on a list, to be inscribed upon tablets made out of bronze and to be placed in front of the entry to his mausoleum. • 32. The Search for Time in Yoknapatawpha County Setting is an important aspect of any story, movie, poem and novel. Setting enhances many aspects of a story by adding time, location and mood into the works. Imagine how different Harry Potter would be if it took place in South Africa, instead of the magical kingdom of Hogwarts? Setting also enhances the tone of the narrator by adding effects, such as, weather changes, time of day, time of the year and the time period of the story. Furthermore, in the short story A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, the setting is a source of conflict. The narrator s of the story, the town s people, have an unknown entity, but because the story shifts between time periods and settings, the reader acquires different points of view from the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... William Faulkner s first Gothic literature story ever written is, A Rose for Emily . Gothic literature originates from the medieval times in Europe and the United States, specifically during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Gothic literature emphasizes ghost stories, mysteries and circumstances often not found in regular stories. It also focuses on a specific theme and setting, generally a sinister house or a frightening castle, to create a tone and mood of suspense. More specifically, after the American Civil War in 1866, many Southern writers, such as Faulkner, created a new genre of writing. Southern gothic is a style of writing that is unique to the Southern States of South America. Southern Gothic writer s, such as Faulkner, took the depressing, defeated and weary Southern culture in America, and used it as an inspiration to write. For instance, Faulkner uses Emily Grierson, the protagonist of A Rose for Emily , to emphasize unpleasant and dark aspects of the Southern gothic culture. The standard definition of the traditional gothic novel tends to refer to the three elements: a setting in an ancestral house, real or perceived occult events, and a women at risk (Palmer 123). The home of Emily Grierson is where the majority of the story takes place. The home is a significant setting because of the detrimental effects time as on it. Without a doubt, as described in the story, the house was once a beautiful estate, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. International Research And Development At The High... International research and development are being conducted to come across the high capacity demand in transport network, mostly for 100 G Ethernet and beyond. The two main subjects that need to be identified to raise the data rate to 100 Gb/s per wavelength are.  Bandwidth expansion One direct method for increasing the capacity of a system is to raise the transmission bandwidth per wavelength either optically or electronically. In optical communication, there are two broadly used techniques for increasing the capacity of the transmission. The first technique is to spread out the bandwidth by adding numerous optical carriers. This technique has already been slow and deployed and it is known as Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM). Wavelength Division Multiplexing can benefit to extend the transmission bandwidth by adding various transceivers for the current optical fiber links deprived of the need to install other fiber links. WDM is considered as one of the most cost effective methods to raise the optical fiber link quantity. The second technique is to extend the electronic bandwidth per wavelength relying on the CMOS technology. However, the present digital to analog converters (DAC)/ (ADC) can only support upto 6 GHz bandwidth. It became a challenge to realize 100 Gb/s transmission in a cost effective manner. But, recently DAC/ADC realized more than 30 GS/s with more than a 20 GHz analog bandwidth. This can support a 100 Gb/s transmission.  Enhancing the spectral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Chinese American Transnationalism This paper is a brief reaction to a scholarly article in Airriess Text entitled Chinese American Transnational Migration and Connections. This article is located in chapter 11 of Airriess text Contemporary Ethnic Geographies in America, on pages 263 through 283. The text begins by explaining that transnationalism is a reinterpretation of immigration, and natural to Chinese Americans from birth. The first mechanism of transnationalism is called an astronaut family, and it means that family members reside in different countries across the world. Another common mechanism of transnationalism is called parachute kids. This title is used to describe the situation where both parents live in Asia, and the teenage (or older) child lives in the United States generally for educational purposes. This is the largest age group of the foreign born Chinese, totaling nearly 2 million, 80.3% of this population, and slightly more female than male. This age group is known as the productive group, since they are the ones who generally pay for everything. Between the ages of 16 and 64, Chinese Americans are going to college, getting jobs, and starting families. It is also Chinese tradition that this age group care for the elderly age group 65+. Since this middle age group is so large, in twenty years from now we are going to have a lot of elderly Chinese people. The fact that people are living longer lives will also add to this population of old people. Mummification And Death Rituals Of Ancient Egypt In ancient Egypt, scarabs (a sacred large dung beetle from the Mediterranean area) first appeared in the late Old Kingdom (c. 2575 c. 2130 BCE) and were used for the living, as a sign of good luck. Then when they evolved from the so called button seals scarabs, they remained rare until Middle Kingdom times (1938 c. 1630 BCE). This was because they were now being associated with the afterlife and death. Some were used simply as ornaments and decoration, while others were purely sacred in purpose, such as the large basalt heart scarabs of the New Kingdom (1539 1075 BCE). Later they were also placed in the bandages of mummies and were symbolically identified with the heart of the deceased. (Lace, William. Mummification and Death Rituals of Ancient ... Engineers may begin their day with a meeting with their team, either discussing progress on a current project or taking a look at market trend to determine their next project. These meetings usually range between one hour to two hours, and people who attend may be required to take notes. After the meeting, each engineer returns to his or her individual office and works toward finishing their individual tasks. Individually, computer hardware engineers may diagnose and troubleshoot failed media and solid state storage devices and modify hardware to either enable forensic analysis of the media or to change the functionality of the hardware for other purposes. • 37. Major Depressive Disorder ( Mdd ) Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) is currently labeled one of the world s greatest health problems, with an estimated prevalence of 4.7% and the second highest cause of years lived with a disability in 2010. The economic impact on patients with MDD is extensive particularly in patients that do not respond to treatment. Severe MDD can lead to loss of productivity and increase mortality. There remain several antidepressant treatments (ADTs) available to patients with MDD, but there is a significant minority that do not respond to first line treatments. Secondary treatment options, including changing the current ADT or adding another ADT to the treatment regimen, such as a second generation antipsychotic. Currently, aripiprazole and quetiapine are the approved therapies in the United States for unresponsive MDD patients, including the adjunctive usage of fluoxetine and olanzapine. Their efficacy has been proven countless times in randomized controlled trials of these agents, but their tolerability profiles has limited their clinical usage. Side effects fluctuate between medications, but most regularly comprise of akathisia for aripiprazole, increased appetite and weight gain for olanzapine fluoxetine combination, and excessive sedation for quetiapine. Weight gain can be a particularly menacing side effect as it increases a patient s overall risk of metabolic abnormalities; extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) which is equally linked with eventual risk of tardive ... There seem to be no words that could truly match the horrific experience, but soldiers tried to conjure images using literature to come close to their experience. As stated in The World s History, Europe had not warfare on such a scale since the Napoleonic wars (Spodek 664). Even watching the American Civil War from afar could not have prepared Europe and the young men that served for the devastation WWI brought. The poems described the war as a collection of numbed men, simply waiting to die, lines of grey, muttering faces. Men who had joined to serve their country had now become disillusioned with the nobility of dying for their country, wondering if the suffering both in and out of the trenches ... From that day on, Guanyin has been represented with a lot of arms and eyes.7 Representations of the bodhisattva in China prior to the Song dynasty were masculine in appearance. Guanyin s image is depicted as a young man dressed in Northern Song Buddhist robes sitting gracefully. He is depicted looking or glancing down, symbolizing that Guanyin continues to watch over the world.8 This Guanyin sculpture was made around Late Song dynasty, the appearance of the bodhisattva showing the slender build, feminine curved face, even though the Guanyin is still portrayed as a male figure, it shows some transition between male and female characteristics. Later images display attributes of both genders. One interpretation of this development contends that the bodhisattva is neither male nor female but has transcended sexual distinctions, as he has all other dualities in the sphere of samsara (the temporal world).
