The Trenches Of World War I
Introduction:
World War 1 changed the world around it. More men fought than one could comprehend. World War 1
almost destroyed an entire generation of men. The battlefield for Australians were lined with trenches
filled with disease, pests and the fallen where they had medical aid. They experienced traumas not yet
known commonly at all. The war was not embellished for its inhumanity in its time but as we see now
the men and women who helped with the war effort lived with fear of death, disease and infection.
What Were the Trenches? Why was a System of Trenches Employed?
In World War 1 trench warfare began. Trench warfare was a method of fighting where apposing
armies fought from and defended their territories using a system of dug out ... Show more content on

Were Men from all Armies Involved in Trench Warfare? At Which Battle Sites Were Trenches Dug?
The Allies consisted of Serbia, Russia, France (Raymond Poincarѐ), Romania, Belgium, British
Empire (David Lloyd George/George V), United States (Woodrow Wilson), Italy (Vittorio Emanuele
III/Vittorio Orlando), Brazil, Greece, Japan, Liberia, Montenegro, Portugal, Romania, Australia.
The Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austria Hungary, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire. These powers
and allies fought each other on the Western Front, Eastern front, in Gallipoli, and France. The Western
Front, Eastern Front and Gallipoli had trenches protecting them.
What Were the Conditions Like for the Soldiers in the Trenches?
Trenches were infested with rats, disease and mud. Rats infested the trenches. There were two kinds of
rats black and brown. Brown rats were the most feared as they gorged on more human flesh and could
grow to the size of a small dogs. This quote describes rats perfectly Great, sleek, corpse fed rats ran in
squads between our legs and over our feet as we stood. Their obscene squeaking could be heard at all
times. Some men conceived an unmeasured hatred of these loathsome things, and were always trying
to slaughter them. I wondered, as I stood, did they picture themselves as those scattered corpses a prey
to these. Imagination is decidedly not good for a soldier. It is one of the things Kipling forgot to tell us

Essay On Tourette s Syndrome In The Classroom
Tourette s Syndrome in the Classroom
Introduction to Tourette s Syndrome
Students have many academic experiences that are different from each other. Every student has his/her
own abilities or disabilities that affect their learning process. Some disabilities do not necessarily
prohibit a child s learning, but others may adversely affect a child s cognitive abilities. Some learning
disabilities are addressed in an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 plan. Once a teacher
realizes that a student has some sort of special needs, then the teacher must plan to make adjustments
or accommodations to address those needs. One of these conditions is Tourette s syndrome. According
to Jankovic (2014), Tourette s syndrome is a common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Risk factors for this conditions include male sex, and a family history of tics, OCD, and possibly
ADHD (p. 2333). The symptoms of Tourette s Syndrome typically start in early childhood with the
visible tics. It may take a while for a doctor to firmly diagnose certain tics as Tourette s syndrome as it
difficult to diagnose this condition. It usually takes about a year after the tics become present for them
to be diagnosed and the diagnosed is made clinically and does not need neuroimaging or laboratory
testing for the condition to be confirmed (Kurlan, 2010, 2333). The tics related to this condition cause
problems in several daily functions in various ways in many aspects of their lives.
There are many options for treatments for people diagnosed with Tourette s Syndrome. According to
Dr. Kurlan (2013), tics can be treated with habit reversal cognitive behavioral therapy, medications
(most commonly alpha agonists and antipsychotics), local intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin
and some severe, refractory cases have responded to deep brain stimulation surgery (DBS). Some of
these treatments can be also used for people diagnosed with other disabilities including ADHD and
OCD. Behavioral therapy can help children with Tourette s Syndrome monitor their tics. The other
methods are mostly either medications or DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) which is usually used by

Ophelia In Hamlet
The character Ophelia in William Shakespeare s Hamlet is seen as an important character in the play
due to her extreme violent reactions that can be seen as bizarre and peculiar. In the play Hamlet by
William Shakespeare, Ophelia can be seen as to have obviously gone mad, and she is treated
sympathetically, and her death is also treated with respect.
Ophelia s madness in the play consists of a mad language, violent reactions and distraught behaviour.
Ophelia is a subject of long time mental and emotional abuse at the hands of her father Polonius,
Claudius and Hamlet, a character who is suffering from mental illness himself. Thus her deranged
language might be considered reasonable, as through it, she reveals her unusually painful situation

Prussian Military Reforms Essay
Innovation and Evolution:
Prussian Military Reforms of the 19th Century
The concept of war as a static and unchanging occurrence is an outdated and dangerous
miscalculation. More accurately, war is a fluidic, evolving and shifting phenomenon constantly
reinventing itself, rendering stagnant, inflexible principles potentially disastrous. Consequently, as
students of war and future players in this transforming theatre, the study of eras of significant
development is an extremely relevant pursuit. Recognizing the need for adaptation and the creation of
doctrine is now a prerequisite for any effective modern commander. War is unpredictable in nature and
particularly so in current theatres of operation, in which change is rapid ... Show more content on

These developments influenced most of the powerful nations of Europe and were soon repeated in
similar forms around the world. Furthermore, many of the Prussian enhancements in army doctrine are
the foundation of the command structures of many modern militaries today.
Although his armies enjoyed unprecedented successes and expanded the French Empire from Spain to
the steppes of Russia, the Napoleonic way of war was fraught with deficiencies. Due to the Napoleon
s genius and mastery of this period of military manoeuvres, he was able to forestall the affects of the
inherent limitations of his system until the war of the Sixth Coalition (1813) and eventually the fateful
battle of Waterloo (1815). One the most significant, intrinsic flaws in Napoleon s system was related
to issues of command. During the beginnings of Napoleon s career, he commanded armies of sizes up
to 60 000 troops. In Italy in 1796, he commanded a force of just 38 000. With the increasing sizes of
forces in the later empire, due to concepts such as levee en masse and recruitment legislation of 1792,
the inability of a single commander to control such vast forces was becoming apparent. The sheer
immensity of the forces now mustered was unprecedented. In 1812 the Grande Armee, consisted of a
staggering 611 000 soldiers. Much to the hindrance of the later empire, few, if any officers in the
Grande Armee, besides Napoleon himself, could command forces

How Will Our Daily Lives Within The City Of Tomorrow...
How will our daily lives in the city of tomorrow unfold? What disruptions will smart systems,
technologies of automation and constant connectivity bring to our lifestyles? Which new economic
models will emerge and what will be the role of the nuances of different geographical areas? What
effect will this development of future cities have on our natural resources and the environment? These
are ideas and questions that I wish to speculate on and explore.
Emergent technologies have advanced beyond our ability to conceptualize their implications. New
ways of living have already emerged based on constant aggregation and processing of data. In the
name of efficiency, advanced technology like lidar, pattern recognition, synthetic sensing, and internet
of things have been introduced in models of smarter cities and smarter homes, promising constant
optimization of a city s functioning and of citizens day to day lives. Being born and raised in a diverse
and multi ethnic country like India, I ve been conditioned to notice the ways in which the cultural and
regional specificity in people s lifestyles shape the identity of a city. While the mediation of
technology is indisputably of central importance when discussing the future of the urban environment,
the projections for the future usually refer mostly to economically advanced metropolises or to urban
areas with no local and traditional characteristics attributed to them. Different geographical
particularities, local economies and

The Celebrated Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County Summary
The following essay will lay out a literary analysis of the plot, major characters and the major themes,
of the story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. The story takes place in an old mid
19th century mining town called Angels Camp, the narrator claims to go there to find a man by the
name of Simon Wheeler. Like any mining town in the West, it was populated primarily by men, many
of them looking for their fortune. As something of a frontier town, it would probably seem to be full of
loud, uncouth, and uneducated people compared to the more genteel East. The narrator, a mannered
Easterner, describes his visit to a mining camp where, on behalf of a friend, he is searching for one
Leonidas W. Smiley. He stops in an old tavern, where he meets goodnatured, garrulous old Simon
Wheeler, who cannot recall a Leonidas Smiley, but does remember a Jim Smiley who lived in the
camp around 1849 or 1850. Without prompting, Wheeler launches into an extended narrative about the
gambler Smiley and his exploits. Smiley, he says, was uncommon lucky, and had a reputation for ...

The Labeling Theory In The Criminal Justice System
Labeling theory argues that people tend to identify themselves and behave in ways that reflect how
others label them. The behavior of one individual will influence and is influenced by the audience s
reaction; while at the same time, the audience s reaction will affect one s self perception, and in turn,
influences his behavior (shown as below). According to this theory, an individual s self image is
actually constructed of ideas about what he/she thinks others are thinking about him/her. Human
behavior is the result of meanings created by the social interaction of conversation, both real and
imaginary (Mead, 1934; Macionis, 2012). In other words, according to the labeling theory, if an
individual believes others think he is delinquent, then the chance is, he will regard self as delinquent
as well, and make more delinquent movements. Therefore, the effect of punishment is negative
according to the labeling theory. The individuals who were convicted and sent to the prison will be
labeled as the felony and as the consequence, they will gradually accept this recognition and see
themselves as the criminals who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Deterrence is the primary justification for punishment. In the practice, this deterrence centric
philosophy serves as the fundamental principle for many criminal justice systems in the U.S., no

hypotheses of the deterrence theory are that crime can be prevented when punishment is more
significant than the perceived benefits, and the punishment should be swift, certain, and severe.
Generally, there are two types of the deterrence, one is general deterrence, which emphasized on the
impact of punishment on the general population; while the other one is specific deterrence, which uses

Iran Pros And Cons
Under Supreme Leader Khamenei; moderate President Rafsanjani; and reformists President Khatami,
the Iran nuclear program received support in the 1990s from China, Russia, and the A.Q. Khan
network. China and Iran signed an agreement in 1990 and subsequently imported a metric ton of
uranium hexafluoride, a feed gas for gas centrifuges, from China in 1991. According to certain
safeguard agreements in place, Iran was supposed to report the transfer to the IAEA but they did not.
However, support from the Chinese stopped in 1992 after China joined the Nuclear Suppliers Group
and succumbed to U.S. pressures. These measures forced the Iranians to seek assistance from the A.Q.
Khan network again; therefore, Iran purchased more drawings and components for 500 P 1 centrifuges
and drawings for the upgraded P 2 centrifuges. Russia also supported the Iranian nuclear program in

addresses concerns about future secret facilities, specifying that Iran is subject to exceptionally

The added fiber aids in weight loss, beta carotene aids in vision, and vitamin A aids in stronger

contains less than fifty calories. Because beta carotene, is converted to Vitamin A in the body, this
enables the retina to absorb and process light. This is achieved by consuming one cup of pumpkin

Machiavelli s View Of Human Nature
All the states, all the dominions, under whose authority men have lived in the past
and live now have been and are either republics or principalities. In Machiavelli s, The
Prince, timeless keys to a successful principality are examined. The keys are understanding
human nature, respecting that nature, and reaffirming that successful leadership can exist
in the same fashion yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Machiavelli s perspective of human nature is founded on the principle that people
in general don t want their culture changed by an outside influence. Machiavelli
demonstrates in the book that the nature of people is to defend who they are. When the
prince attempts to change their culture in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only through an understanding of the nature of his subjects, having an ability to
control his subjects, and possessing the means to defend his subjects can the prince truly
find the universal key to open the door to upholding the ideals of practical leadership.
When a prince understands the nature of the people it is easier for him to enter the land.
Machiavelli writes of the Romans and how they developed their empire, the Aetolians
once brought the Romans into Greece; and in every other country they invaded, the
Romans were brought in by the inhabitants. Because the Romans understood human
nature their movement into power was unchallenged. Once in power it is essential for the
prince to be able to control the people. I say that a prince must want to have a reputation
for compassion rather than cruelty: none the less, he must be careful that he does not
make bad use of compassion. When Machiavelli wrote this he was outlining the key to
controlling the people. The prince needs to be able to keep the people united, and loyal to
him and at the same time ensure respect for the laws by instilling a fear for punishment.
One of Machiavelli s most used examples of a successful prince is Cesare Borgia. It is
essential to be feared not hated and in the case of Borgia his minister Remirro de Orco
punished law breakers in a cruel fashion that led to people hating Borgia. To create a

at the platoon level. While the MTOE authorized one per platoon, the operating environment

when many people were trying to persuade others or share their emotions and histories. The black
movements in the United States made use of this tool, many authors coming out and becoming part of
the fabric of society. Three authors in particular, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, and Richard Wright
became some of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century, owing to their own
history and life experiences to give life and meaning to their works. Ralph Ellison is one of the more
influential writers of the early 20th century in North ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Wright his first publication as an author and opening him up to the world of writing in the early 20th
century. The most well known of the three black authors, Langston Hughes is mentioned as an
influence on many other authors, including Ralph Ellison and Richard Wright, among others. Born in

Women were the main purchasers of lip balm products. Therefore, they focused primarily on women
customers. They jumped on this tremendous opportunity by redesigning their lip balm containers and
making them more attractive to women. They also focused on sensory perception. For example,
adding aromas and special fragrances that captivated the senses. It appeared that EOS was the only lip
balm that was primarily focusing on women. Their goal was to package an attractively designed lip
balm at a reasonable price that was very unique. Their marketing strategy worked and has catapulted
the small startup to unimaginable heights of success in the highly saturated lip balm

Mission 33284 Research Paper
June 3, 1986 an adroit group of astronauts went on Mission 33284: Journey to Mars. They went on
this trip in search of life on Mars, or at least evidence of life on Mars. Five of them set out on this
precarious journey to space.. Not a single one returned home. No bodies were discovered, no calls
were sent back to base, not a single clue was given as to what happened; it was just nothing. A full
investigation was conducted and it was concluded that something happened to the engine and they fell
into oblivion. December 8, 2016, 30 years later, another set of astronauts were chosen to take part in
Mission 33284 once again. The fortunate group of 6 were: Kamila Hernandez, Jackson Sky, Linda

For a moment the ship stayed just floating in space then it began its steep descent into the deep dark
trenches of space. The ship fell for what felt like years until it finally crashed on a hard surface.
Kamila, who had bloody nose and left leg was completely shattered, looked around at the now
wrecked ship. The entire back of the craft was flattened the only that was visible was the long trail of
blood trickling down. Kamila slowly crawled to the intercom and dialed 33284 on the intercom.
Nothing happened. She dialed again and again and again and again and once more and another, but...
nothing happened. She sat staring at the blank intercom in complete disbelief then she began to sob.
Now realizing she was stranded in space with no one to help, and little oxygen left she began to sob
harder and harder until she began hyperventilating. While wiping her tears something caught her eye,
there was a piece of a spacecraft outside. But it wasn t a piece of her spacecraft... it was another
spacecraft. How could it be though, she thought, what other spacecraft has cras ... She didn t even
finish her thought before realizing. She looked down at the intercom once more and understood that
30 years no calls were received because the calls weren t meant to be received. She realized that the
call she just made didn t go through not because it was busted but because it wasn t made to go

The Scope Of Computerized Threat Rootkits Essay
In the scope computerized threat rootkits are not given the credit they deserve. They tend to be
minimized while they proved to be a much serious danger. Dr Mark Ciampa had categorized rootkits
under the concealment subgroup of malware, which avoiding detection is their primary characteristic.
He had briefly defined rootkits as set software tools used to hide the actions of other types of software
by changing the operating system to force it to ignore their malicious files and activities. Rootkits also
hide or remove all traces of evidence that may reveal the malware, he said. His definition is not totally
accurate even though he pin pointed the main purpose for what rootkits are used for, which is
concealment. Contrary to the popular believe rootkits are not malware and not necessarily malicious.
Greg Hoglund and James Butler in the Subverting Windows Kernel Rootkits book identified rootkits
as a computing technology that can be used for evil or goods purposes. For the sake of this paper, the
attention given to rootkits will be focusing on understanding what a rootkit is and how it works, the
different type of rootkits and their implementations, detection measure to not get infected and
preventive measure to avoid infection.
Before, delving into the subject it s important to highlight that rootkits can be whitehat or blackhat. A
black hat use of rootkits is clearly attributed for a malicious agenda. For instance, an attacker who spy

Ran hui et al. (2016) explains that the patient made complaints about myalgia, dyspnea, dry cough as
well as vomiting as a result of continued nausea. All these symptoms were identified from the primary
examination that was done at the time of admission. Some of the vital signs that the patient appears
included an extremely high pressure, which was measured to be about 135/72mmHg; a peak body
temperature that was measured to be 38.60C (Hamzah, Jaffar, and Ziad, 2016). At the same time, the
heartbeat of the patient was measured to be about 85/minutes with a respiration rate of 20/minute (Ran
hui et al., 2016). The primary diagnosis of the patient also indicated a measure test that showed an
albumin and blood at negative/negative. Ran hui et al. (2016) says that there were also multiple
pneumonic infiltrations that were located in the middle and upper lobes and also in the left lower lobe
that were taken on the chest radiography. According to Hamzah, Jaffar, and Ziad (2016), the doctors
treated the patient by administering 180 μg of pegylated interferon alpha on hospital day (HOD) 1 and
1,800 mg of ribavirin (600 mg every 8 hours) daily from HOD 3 to HOD 7. This process also led to a
discontinuation of anti viral treatments because of thrombocytopenia (lowest platelet count was
56,000/μL) and sustained fever that the patient was still complaining about (Ran hui et al., 2016). In
managing the conditions that the patient was suffering from, the doctors placed him on a mechanical
ventilator on HOD 4. This was also followed by the increased multiple pneumonia infiltrations that
were always identified. To stabilize the patient further, the doctors decided to undertake a
tracheostomy on the HOD 23, which had the effect of weaning the patient from the mechanical
ventilator HOD 39, which the patient had been given. From all these numerous tests that were

Causes Of Gangs
When the word gangs comes to mind, one can immediately picture a big, tall male figure often
covered with tattoos, piercings, and maybe even a bald headed guy. One might think that gangs only
occur in areas like Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and areas illustrated in movies. Gangs are also becoming
more glorified in the media. For example, while listening to a rap song on the radio, some sort of gang
reference will come up. Gangs can often target the young and the vulnerable due to many reasons,
such as peer pressure and fear. Also, they may target someone who is in need and vulnerable for
falling into gang violence and actions.
Some of the direct causes for individuals to join gangs are due to the social aspect. It can be because

Once you re in, there are only two ways to get out: by dying or running (Martinez Pg 33). Therefore,
sometimes young adults or even adults feel pressured to be involved or to continue being involved in
gangs because they have the fear of being murdered. Sometimes the fear of being left out pressures
them into getting involved in gangs, and they end up leading a violent lifestyle. Since gangs are
typically associated with fear, most individuals can fall into this peer pressure to join a gang due to
fear of the consequences which can range from violence, like threats, to even their death.
Another aspect of feeling accepted can come from family related issues. Young people might feel that
they don t receive enough support or attention at home. They may be trying to escape a negative home
life, or may be looking for a father figure. Gangs often make promises to give unconditional support
and to become the family they never had (Why People Join Gangs). In some cases, individuals who
join gangs can be looking for a way out of their home. This can be due to family issues they are
experiencing, or also they may not be receiving attention in their home. Gangs are often seen in areas
where poor living conditions occur and where social economic statuses are present.Children and teens
living in these circumstances can experience lack of attention simply because the family needs to work
and meet ends meet. This circumstance, which does not seem so malicious, can leave the

Essay On Hand Swaging Bullets
In this week s reflection assignment the required viewing material was a video that addressed the topic
of hand swaging bullets.
The video gave an overview of the projectiles themselves and also showed the method in which they
are to be loaded.
The video began by stating that the projectiles were sent to him to be tested and he did not swage the
swaged projectiles that are being shown in the video. The projectiles were unique in the fact that the
person that swaged them used a die that would allow the used brass from a .40 S W to be formed into
a jacket for a .451 caliber projectile that are to used to load .45 ACP. The video states that it will give
the user a greater amount of versatility when using the projectile as opposed to using a cast bullet.
There were two different types of projectiles to be tested in the video. The first being a standard lead
core projectile and the second projectile has a .30 caliber gas check in the nose of the cartridge. These
swaged bullets were very comparable to factory ammunition in terms of diameter and weight. ... Show

Femilab Controversy
Near the end of the competitive Space Race in the early 1970s, a Soviet institution joined forces with a
young Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory to garner a greater understanding of the subatomic
world. Tomorrow, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia turns 60 and is heralded
as a long running Fermilab collaborator.
In 1972, JINR sent some of the first Russian scientists to Fermilab. Together, American and Russian
scientists worked on the lab s first accelerator system, using a Soviet built hydrogen target for the
hydrogen proton beam. It was the start of a lasting relationship between two formerly opposing
nations.

There are many Russian groups, especially at JINR, interested in neutrino physics, Baranov said.

Essay about Deception in William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night
Deception in William Shakespeare s Twelfth Night
In William Shakespeare s comedic play, Twelfth Night, a recurring theme is deception. The characters
in the play used deception for a variety of purposes. Viola s use of deception involves her disguising
herself as a man in order to obtain a job with the Duke of Illyria, Orsino. On the other hand, Maria,
Olivia s servant, writes a letter to Malvolio in Olivia s handwriting to make Malvolio act foolishly
because of his love for Olivia. While some use deception as a means of survival, others use deception
to trick others and make them act foolishly.
The first example of deception in this play was when Viola decides to disguise herself as a man. Viola

She feels pity for Olivia and herself with the statement Poor lady, she were better love a dream (2.2.
25)! Viola s use of deception causes a cross gender love triangle with which she can not deal.
Another example of deception is when Maria, Olivia s servant writes a letter to Malvolio, Olivia s
head servant and Maria s coworker. Maria deceives Malvolio by writing in Olivia s handwriting. In
the letter she says that Olivia loves men in yellow stockings. Remember who commended thy yellow
stockings, and wished to see thee ever cross gartered (2.5. 143 145). Maria knows that Malvolio will
follow this ridiculous deed because of this love for his lady Olivia. Sir Toby Belch says, He shall think
by the letters that thou wilt drop that they come from my niece, and that she s in love with him (2.3.
154 156). Maria places the letter in her garden where Malvolio will definitely find it. Thinking Olivia
will fall in love with him because of his clothing, Malvolio dress up in yellow stockings and goes to
see Olivia. When Olivia sees Malvolio and the way he is acting, she isolates him for fear that he is
insane.
Shakespeare s use of cross dressing and deceitfulness extends beyond the actual writings in the plays
and goes onto the stage. Women were not allowed to perform on stage in Shakespeare s time. . ..all the
great women s roles in Elizabethan and Jacobean plays, from Juliet and Lady Macbeth to the duchess

The Importance Of Whaling
Aboriginal peoples have been whaling as a tradition for thousands of years with it being a significant
part of their culture. They have depended on whales for food, clothing and other handicrafts. Whaling
was key to survival and the Natives have honored the sacrifice of each whale through spiritual rituals
and ceremonies. It gives them a purpose and discipline which benefits their whole community. This
has not been a problem for many centuries, only recently have animal activists been trying to stop the
hunting of whales. The Makah people have been the main subjects to the opposition of whaling on the
basis that it is unnecessary for their culture or their survival. This has been an ongoing issue since
1999, when they harvested their first whale in 70 years. The violent backlash received has prevented
them from gaining permission to hunt after that which led to the illegal killing of a whale in 2007. To
present day, the Makah has gotten many undeserved death threats and bomb threats to schools. Many
complaints have been made that the hunting method differs from how it was done traditionally so the
hunting cannot be considered as one of their cultural practices. By denying the Makah cultural rights,
this controversy could lead to cultural genocide. The Makah people should be allowed to harvest a
total of 24 whales in 6 year period with two hunting seasons of 3 weeks each because it is the main
factor in preserving their culture, it will not cause the gray whale population to

The Role Of Abortion In The United States

Taking a Look at the Formalist Theory
The formalist approach of the four main types of literary criticisms, closely follow the idea of close
reading and emphasis on the text itself. Formalists invest time on the work of the author to determine
the meaning. They focus on structure, imagery, symbols, setting, and themes, completely disregarding
all other types of ideologies. In the text, To Build a Fire, by Jack London, these literary elements flood
the story, allowing it to be seen from a different perspective and giving it a whole new meaning. The
formalist approach will make the reader take into account all the different factors such as: characters,
situational irony, similes, and the use of symbolic vocabulary in relationship to tension and ambiguity.
All of these literary elements are not to be looked at individually, but by being put together it will
accurately describe the reader s experience. London s use of all the various elements such as: imagery,
characters, symbols, setting, and theme allows the reader to believe that there is a different meaning
behind the authors work. These literary elements may have also been used in numerous locations in
his text to allow us to uncover these hidden messages and meanings. As London wrote, To Build a Fire
, he didn t want just a simple story about a man on a journey through the Yukon, but a journey with
twists. He wanted to place a deeper meaning behind some items or objects that he used but didn t
mention in great detail. Formalists tend to pay close

Infect Influenza Vaccines
When we hear the word virus, we usually think of something that makes us sick. A virus is an
ultramicroscopic infectious organism that, having no independent metabolic activity, can replicate
only within a cell of another host organism. A virus consists of a core of nucleic acid, either RNA or
DNA, surrounded by a coating of antigenic protein and sometimes a lipid layer surrounds it as well.
The viral genome provides the genetic code for replication, and the host cell provides the necessary
energy and raw materials. To fight viruses, we use vaccines. While some may infect a broad range,
other viruses can only infect certain kinds of cells. Vaccines are made of inactive, dead or weakened
virus cells or protein antigens that can no longer infect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), influenza viruses are divided into three types,
designated as A, B, and C. Influenza type C usually only causes either very mild symptoms or no
symptoms at all. Types A and B, however, are responsible for epidemics of respiratory illnesses that
can result in hospitalization, or even death. Influenza is constantly changing over time by mutations.
This continual change allows the virus to evade the antibodies that were meant to kill it. A host
infected with influenza virus develops antibodies against that virus; as the virus changes, the first
antibody no longer recognizes the newer virus and infection can occur because the host does not
recognize the new flu virus as a problem until the infection is well under way. The first antibody
developed may, in some instances, provide partial protection against infection with a new influenza
virus. According to Medicine Net.com, In 2009, almost all individuals had no antibodies that could
recognize the novel H1N1 virus immediately. It quickly spread throughout the world so fast that the
WHO declared this new flu strain (termed novel H1N1 influenza A swine flu). There are currently
four main strains of influenza circulating worldwide. Three of the viruses are type A, and one is type
B. Type A viruses are divided into subtypes based on the differences in two viral proteins called
hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). The three subtypes of influenza A are A(H1N1), A(H3N2),
and A(H5N1). The reason for several strands of type A are because of the two kinds of change

Fredrick Douglass was a slave whom was kept in the State of Maryland. He was an African American
social reformer, orator, abolitionist, writer, and a statesman. Fredrick was born into being a slave in the

seen and treated like a slave because of where he was born into. Fredrick was born into this world and
he says that there were whispers about his father being his master. He was separated from his mother

Many men and woman were desperately needed to work on the land. The slave s owners where white
bond servants paying their passage across the ocean from Europe through indentured labor, eased but
did not solve any of their problems. Slaves were mainly economical on large farms where they labored
intensive cash crops, including tobacco, cotton, rice, sugar, and many other farming products that were
able to be traded and exported. By the end of the American Revolution, slavery was finally proven
unprofitable in the North, so it started dying out. In the South the institution was becoming less and
less useful to farmers as tobacco prices fluctuated and began to drop rapidly. That s is when the cotton
gin was invented by Eli Whitney, which created the growth of southern slavery again and was the
central place of cotton in the world economy (class notes). The cotton replaced the tobacco leading to
the South s main cash crop and slavery became profitable again. That made the international slave
trade rise. Although, majority of the Southerners did not own any slaves at all. But, by 1860 the South
s abnormality institution was impossible to separate from the regions economy.
The Southerners were torn between the economic benefits of slavery and the morals of the
constitutions issues it had been raising.

Wang Lung Quotes
Quote #1: He had no articulate thought of anything; there was only this perfect sympathy of
movement, of turning this earth of theirs over and over to the sun, this earth which formed their home
and fed their bodies and made their gods (36). The land Wang Lung worked was what he lived off, all
the money that he earned was from all his hard earned work. Constant sweating and labor to keep his
farm running, it kept him and his family feed. What is so significant about this quote is that Wang
Lung talks about how there was a perfect sympathy of movement showing that he had been doing it
for so long that it just because another thing to him. You can grasp this when you see someone
learning a new thing such as swimming for instance person is doing a stroke for the first time, their
actions will not completely follow through they will probably be broken unlike a person that has been
doing the stroke for a while. Wang Lung talks as if he has been working in the sun for his whole life
and now it is just part of his blood.
Quote #2 It would have been beneath him to notice her. Instead he feigned great interest in the clouds
and he cried, That cloud which hangs upon the left horn of the new moon speaks of rain. It will come

book are ignored and are thought as nothing. To be noticed as a women you must me pretty or be part

Macrocosm In Arcadia
Paper 3 A main theme apparent in the play Arcadia is the concept of increasing entropy, the theory that
objects will only decline from structure to chaos. Manifesting this theme through both the motif of
human desire and the devolution of the structure of the play from order to disorder, Tom Stoppard
suggests that the increase of entropy is apparent in microcosms as well as macrocosms. Stoppard uses
human desire to create several relationships that decay over the course of the play as a metaphor for
increasing entropy in the microcosm of Sidley Park. The play first introduces Mrs. Chater as the
woman who was found in carnal embrace with Septimus (2). By starting the play with an affair,
Stoppard introduces the idea that the free will of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the beginning of the play, the structure of the play is separated into two distinct timelines: one in
the early 1800 s, one in modern day. Stoppard even tells us that The action of the play shuttles back
and forth between the early nineteenth century and the present day (15). However, by the end of the
play in scene 7, the distinction between the two timelines is blurred, with the past merging into the
present as Lord Augustus is chased into the [present day] room by Thomasina (77). The play proceeds
to have both past and present characters interacting on set at the same time, transforming the once
separate timelines into an intricate disorder. Stoppard chooses to structure his play in this way to
parallel the increasing entropy of the characters relationships. Likewise, Stoppard uses the table
present in both timelines as a depiction of increasing entropy on a small scale. At the beginning of the
play, the table only has an old fashioned theodolite and also some other books stacked up , which
symbolizes order (1). However, during the course of the play, the table collects items as characters
from both timelines set items upon it, and by the end of the play contains the geometrical solids, the
computer, decanter, glasses, tea mug, Hannah s research books, Septimus books, the two

Ulcerative Colitis Affected My Family
In 2011, my brother was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis which affected my entire family including
myself. He went through many surgeries, many of which made it quite impossible for me to see him
given that I was only 11 years old, and everything on that level in that hospital was contagious.
Throughout, this period in my life my mother was always busy and I learned to slowly do my things
on my own. Although it sounds crucial, I didn t expect much from my mother given that she basically
lived in the hospital. I fell into depression because my brother was my best friend and I couldn t
accept that he was in so much pain. I learned to overcome depression and slowly learned that life
shouldn t be taken for granted and I should believe in myself.

Work Is Calculated As Force X Distance
Pg 377: Answer 1: Exerting a force does not imply that work is done. Work is calculated as Force x
Distance. Work is said to be done on an object when the force on the object causes the object to move
some distance. Ife the object does not move, no work is done immaterial of how much force is
exerted. There are many situations when force is exerted but work is not done. For example, if you
hold a piece of wood while helping in a project, effort is done to hold the wood in place, but since the
force doesn t cause the wood to move, work is not said to be done. The force has to be in the direction
of motion to require work to be done. Answer 2: The formula for calculating work is: Work (J) =
Force (N) x Distance (m) Thus, the amount of work done can be determined by multiplying Force
with Distance. Answer 3: Here two scenarios are given. a. Force of 2N moves an object 3 meters: Here
work is calculated as: W = F x D = 2N x 3m = 6 Nm (6 Joules) b. Force of 3N moves an object 2
meters: Here work is calculated as: W = F x D = 3N x 2m = 6 Nm (6 Joules) Thus, in both cases, the
work done is same, i.e. 6 Joules. Answer 4: Here, we need to move 5 large cans of paint from
basement to the second floor. Let us assume that the Force for lifting one can is 1N and the height of
one floor is 1m. Thus, the below two scenarios are taken as: a. When all the cans are lifted and taken
to second floor all at once, the calculation for work done is: W = 5N (5 cans each of 1N) x 2m (2
floors each

Essay on Foreshadowing and Irony in “Sweat” by Zora Neale...
The short story Sweat, by Zora Neale Hurston, seems to exemplify the epitome of a bad marriage.
Hurston uses foreshadowing and irony to demonstrate the disintegrated relationship between the
abusive husband and the diligent wife. Throughout the story, it becomes obvious that the husband does
not oblige by the motto, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Hurston s use of irony
and foreshadowing helps reveal the fact that the good will prevail and Sykes will finally get what he
deserves. From the very beginning, the reader notices the psychological and verbal abuse that Sykes
puts on Delia. It was a Sunday and Delia decided to get ahead on her work for the week by separating
piles of clothes by color. Fear then came ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The other men in the town seem to disrespect Sykes and even suggest that he should die. While Delia
started to deliver the clean laundry in town one day, the men talked about how Delia is too good for
Sykes and that she deserves better, They also despise Sykes for running around with an ugly and fat
woman, ultimately cheating on his hardworking wife. Finally, one man says, Syke Jones ain t wuth de
shot an powder hit would tek tuh kill em. Not to huh he ain t (357) while another man adds, ...an we
oughter kill im (358). It seems like Hurston portrays this hostility to reiterate to the reader that Sykes
will fall victim to a well deserved death. Perhaps the most important event in the story occurs when
Sykes brings home a huge six foot living snake. Fear once again overcomes Delia and she pleads,
Syke! Syke, mah Gawd! You take dat rattlesnake way from heah! You gottuh. Oh, Jesus, have mussy
(360). Sykes, on the other hand, stands in amusement almost as if he loves to see Delia
psychologically abused. His cockiness unravels as he acts like he is invincible and like anyone and
anything should and will comply with him. In regards to the enormous snake, Sykes boasts, ...He
wouldn t bite me cause Ah knows how tuh handel im (360). He makes sure to instill fear into Delia by
telling her to be careful because the snake would have no problem coming after her. Hurston also has
Sykes portray his own death. In this same scene, Sykes reply to

Analysis Of George Weigel s Book Letters Of A Young...
Through thick and thin, Catholicism has been around for quite a long time. With millions of followers
from around the globe, it has grown to become one of the largest religious faiths. Every single one of
these Christians has their own unique story about how their faith has significantly affected their lives.
In his book, George Weigel shares his experience as a Catholic growing up in late 1950 s and 1960 s
in Baltimore. On page 9 of his book Letters to a Young Catholic , he says The real Catholic difference
... was, at bottom, a way of seeing the world (Weigel 9). This means that what separates a Catholic
from the rest is our experience and knowledge of God, through which we are given the power to
experience the world differently than most others can. I do feel this way as well. Being Catholic, I feel
that I definitely experience the world differently than others. Whenever I see or hear about a tragic
event that has occurred, I can hold solace in the idea that everything is all part of God s master plan
and that it will all work out in the end. If I am every struggling for anything, whether it an exorbitant
amount of homework I have for a weekend or an difficult test or quiz coming up that I haven t had
time to study for, I know that I can trust in God and that everything will be alright in the long run.
Being Catholic has also taught me to be thankful for the smaller things in life, because it is the smaller
things that can add up to make a bad day turn around. Like

Some Legal Case Studies
Legal Case Studies Question One The basic premise of this case has to do with contract law and how
that is applied. Since Australian law follows the principles set down in English contract law (as is the
case with most other English speaking countries), most of the basic legislation differs little from that
basis. However, there have been cases and specific legislation that make Australian contracts unique.
First, it has to be understood what is necessary for a contract to be legal, and then the determination
has to be made whether John and Anton s verbal contract met those requirements. Australian contract
law looks at oral contracts with the same degree of obligation on the part of the contractors as it does a
written contract in most instances. Maritime insurance must be contracted via a signed agreement as
must most contracts where land is exchanged (Fifoot s Law of Contract). This varies somewhat
according to jurisdiction, but most Australian jurisdictions show no distinction between written and
oral contracts. For either type of contract to be legal, it has to follow the six rules of contract:
Agreement where one party makes an offer and the other accepts it; Consideration where one party
gives something in exchange for something from the other party; Intention where both parties intend
to abide by the contract; Capacity where both parties are mentally capable of understanding the
contract; Genuine consent where both parties agree to the contract of their own

The Changing Roles and Experiences of Probation Officers
Introduction
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were over 4 million adults on probation in the
United States in 2010. Today more and more agencies have shifted from simply monitoring an
offender s compliance to using evidenced based practices to reduce recidivism rates. The intense
involvement with offenders caused by this shift exposes officers to many new stressors that previously
did not exist. A recent study by Kirsten R. Lewis, M.Ed., Ladonna S. Lewis, Ph.D., and Tina M.
Garby, Psy.D., examined whether specific caseload events are associated with stress and burnout
among this career specialty using various survey instruments. The results confirmed 2 of their
hypothesis that officers who reported violent and sexual recidivism on their caseloads, offender
suicide, and threats and/or assaults in the line of duty scored significantly higher on measures of
traumatic stress and burnout... Length of service was also a contributing factor. The authors report of
job stress on probation officers is applicable to any human service professional and especially
supervisors, managers and administrators who have the capacity to make meaningful change by
creating training programs and establishing ways to deal with the negative caseload events. The small
study sample limited reliability of the results and more data is needed to assess the overall problem.
Ms. K. R. Lewis is a probation officer with the Maricopa County Adult Probation Department and is
an adjunct

The Western Front, Eastern Front and Gallipoli had trenches protecting them. What Were the Conditions Like for the Soldiers in the Trenches? Trenches were infested with rats, disease and mud. Rats infested the trenches. There were two kinds of rats black and brown. Brown rats were the most feared as they gorged on more human flesh and could grow to the size of a small dogs. This quote describes rats perfectly Great, sleek, corpse fed rats ran in squads between our legs and over our feet as we stood. Their obscene squeaking could be heard at all times. Some men conceived an unmeasured hatred of these loathsome things, and were always trying to slaughter them. I wondered, as I stood, did they picture themselves as those scattered corpses a prey to these. Imagination is decidedly not good for a soldier. Prussian Military Reforms Essay Innovation and Evolution: Prussian Military Reforms of the 19th Century The concept of war as a static and unchanging occurrence is an outdated and dangerous miscalculation. More accurately, war is a fluidic, evolving and shifting phenomenon constantly reinventing itself, rendering stagnant, inflexible principles potentially disastrous. Consequently, as students of war and future players in this transforming theatre, the study of eras of significant development is an extremely relevant pursuit. Recognizing the need for adaptation and the creation of doctrine is now a prerequisite for any effective modern commander. These developments influenced most of the powerful nations of Europe and were soon repeated in similar forms around the world. Furthermore, many of the Prussian enhancements in army doctrine are the foundation of the command structures of many modern militaries today. Although his armies enjoyed unprecedented successes and expanded the French Empire from Spain to the steppes of Russia, the Napoleonic way of war was fraught with deficiencies. Due to the Napoleon s genius and mastery of this period of military manoeuvres, he was able to forestall the affects of the inherent limitations of his system until the war of the Sixth Coalition (1813) and eventually the fateful battle of Waterloo (1815). One the most significant, intrinsic flaws in Napoleon s system was related to issues of command. During the beginnings of Napoleon s career, he commanded armies of sizes up to 60 000 troops. In Italy in 1796, he commanded a force of just 38 000. With the increasing sizes of forces in the later empire, due to concepts such as levee en masse and recruitment legislation of 1792, the inability of a single commander to control such vast forces was becoming apparent. The sheer immensity of the forces now mustered was unprecedented. In 1812 the Grande Armee, consisted of a staggering 611 000 soldiers. • 11. How Will Our Daily Lives Within The City Of Tomorrow... How will our daily lives in the city of tomorrow unfold? What disruptions will smart systems, technologies of automation and constant connectivity bring to our lifestyles? Which new economic models will emerge and what will be the role of the nuances of different geographical areas? What effect will this development of future cities have on our natural resources and the environment? These are ideas and questions that I wish to speculate on and explore. Emergent technologies have advanced beyond our ability to conceptualize their implications. New ways of living have already emerged based on constant aggregation and processing of data. In the name of efficiency, advanced technology like lidar, pattern recognition, synthetic sensing, and internet of things have been introduced in models of smarter cities and smarter homes, promising constant optimization of a city s functioning and of citizens day to day lives. Being born and raised in a diverse and multi ethnic country like India, I ve been conditioned to notice the ways in which the cultural and regional specificity in people s lifestyles shape the identity of a city. • 12. The Celebrated Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County Summary The following essay will lay out a literary analysis of the plot, major characters and the major themes, of the story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. The story takes place in an old mid 19th century mining town called Angels Camp, the narrator claims to go there to find a man by the name of Simon Wheeler. Like any mining town in the West, it was populated primarily by men, many of them looking for their fortune. As something of a frontier town, it would probably seem to be full of loud, uncouth, and uneducated people compared to the more genteel East. The narrator, a mannered Easterner, describes his visit to a mining camp where, on behalf of a friend, he is searching for one Leonidas W. Smiley. He stops in an old tavern, where he meets goodnatured, garrulous old Simon Wheeler, who cannot recall a Leonidas Smiley, but does remember a Jim Smiley who lived in the camp around 1849 or 1850. • 13. The Labeling Theory In The Criminal Justice System Labeling theory argues that people tend to identify themselves and behave in ways that reflect how others label them. The behavior of one individual will influence and is influenced by the audience s reaction; while at the same time, the audience s reaction will affect one s self perception, and in turn, influences his behavior (shown as below). According to this theory, an individual s self image is actually constructed of ideas about what he/she thinks others are thinking about him/her. Human behavior is the result of meanings created by the social interaction of conversation, both real and imaginary (Mead, 1934; Macionis, 2012). In other words, according to the labeling theory, if an individual believes others think he is delinquent, then the chance is, he will regard self as delinquent as well, and make more delinquent movements. Therefore, the effect of punishment is negative according to the labeling theory. The individuals who were convicted and sent to the prison will be labeled as the felony and as the consequence, they will gradually accept this recognition and see themselves as the criminals who ... Iran Pros And Cons Under Supreme Leader Khamenei; moderate President Rafsanjani; and reformists President Khatami, the Iran nuclear program received support in the 1990s from China, Russia, and the A.Q. Khan network. China and Iran signed an agreement in 1990 and subsequently imported a metric ton of uranium hexafluoride, a feed gas for gas centrifuges, from China in 1991. According to certain safeguard agreements in place, Iran was supposed to report the transfer to the IAEA but they did not. Dr Mark Ciampa had categorized rootkits under the concealment subgroup of malware, which avoiding detection is their primary characteristic. He had briefly defined rootkits as set software tools used to hide the actions of other types of software by changing the operating system to force it to ignore their malicious files and activities. Rootkits also hide or remove all traces of evidence that may reveal the malware, he said. His definition is not totally accurate even though he pin pointed the main purpose for what rootkits are used for, which is concealment. • 40. Taking a Look at the Formalist Theory The formalist approach of the four main types of literary criticisms, closely follow the idea of close reading and emphasis on the text itself. Formalists invest time on the work of the author to determine the meaning. They focus on structure, imagery, symbols, setting, and themes, completely disregarding all other types of ideologies. In the text, To Build a Fire, by Jack London, these literary elements flood the story, allowing it to be seen from a different perspective and giving it a whole new meaning. The formalist approach will make the reader take into account all the different factors such as: characters, situational irony, similes, and the use of symbolic vocabulary in relationship to tension and ambiguity. All of these literary elements are not to be looked at individually, but by being put together it will accurately describe the reader s experience. London s use of all the various elements such as: imagery, characters, symbols, setting, and theme allows the reader to believe that there is a different meaning behind the authors work. These literary elements may have also been used in numerous locations in his text to allow us to uncover these hidden messages and meanings. As London wrote, To Build a Fire , he didn t want just a simple story about a man on a journey through the Yukon, but a journey with twists. He wanted to place a deeper meaning behind some items or objects that he used but didn t mention in great detail. Formalists tend to pay close ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Infect Influenza Vaccines When we hear the word virus, we usually think of something that makes us sick. A virus is an ultramicroscopic infectious organism that, having no independent metabolic activity, can replicate only within a cell of another host organism. A virus consists of a core of nucleic acid, either RNA or DNA, surrounded by a coating of antigenic protein and sometimes a lipid layer surrounds it as well. The viral genome provides the genetic code for replication, and the host cell provides the necessary energy and raw materials. To fight viruses, we use vaccines. While some may infect a broad range, other viruses can only infect certain kinds of cells. Vaccines are made of inactive, dead or weakened virus cells or protein antigens that can no longer infect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Center for Disease Control (CDC), influenza viruses are divided into three types, designated as A, B, and C. Influenza type C usually only causes either very mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Types A and B, however, are responsible for epidemics of respiratory illnesses that can result in hospitalization, or even death. Influenza is constantly changing over time by mutations. This continual change allows the virus to evade the antibodies that were meant to kill it. A host infected with influenza virus develops antibodies against that virus; as the virus changes, the first antibody no longer recognizes the newer virus and infection can occur because the host does not recognize the new flu virus as a problem until the infection is well under way. The first antibody developed may, in some instances, provide partial protection against infection with a new influenza virus. According to Medicine Net.com, In 2009, almost all individuals had no antibodies that could recognize the novel H1N1 virus immediately. It quickly spread throughout the world so fast that the WHO declared this new flu strain (termed novel H1N1 influenza A swine flu). There are currently four main strains of influenza circulating worldwide. Three of the viruses are type A, and one is type B. Type A viruses are divided into subtypes based on the differences in two viral proteins called hemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N). The three subtypes of influenza A are A(H1N1), A(H3N2), and A(H5N1). The reason for several strands of type A are because of the two kinds of change influenza A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 44. Macrocosm In Arcadia Paper 3 A main theme apparent in the play Arcadia is the concept of increasing entropy, the theory that objects will only decline from structure to chaos. Manifesting this theme through both the motif of human desire and the devolution of the structure of the play from order to disorder, Tom Stoppard suggests that the increase of entropy is apparent in microcosms as well as macrocosms. Stoppard uses human desire to create several relationships that decay over the course of the play as a metaphor for increasing entropy in the microcosm of Sidley Park. The play first introduces Mrs. Chater as the woman who was found in carnal embrace with Septimus (2). By starting the play with an affair, Stoppard introduces the idea that the free will of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At the beginning of the play, the structure of the play is separated into two distinct timelines: one in the early 1800 s, one in modern day. Stoppard even tells us that The action of the play shuttles back and forth between the early nineteenth century and the present day (15). However, by the end of the play in scene 7, the distinction between the two timelines is blurred, with the past merging into the present as Lord Augustus is chased into the [present day] room by Thomasina (77). The play proceeds to have both past and present characters interacting on set at the same time, transforming the once separate timelines into an intricate disorder. Stoppard chooses to structure his play in this way to parallel the increasing entropy of the characters relationships. Likewise, Stoppard uses the table present in both timelines as a depiction of increasing entropy on a small scale. At the beginning of the play, the table only has an old fashioned theodolite and also some other books stacked up , which symbolizes order (1). However, during the course of the play, the table collects items as characters from both timelines set items upon it, and by the end of the play contains the geometrical solids, the computer, decanter, glasses, tea mug, Hannah s research books, Septimus books, the two ... • 47. Work Is Calculated As Force X Distance Pg 377: Answer 1: Exerting a force does not imply that work is done. Work is calculated as Force x Distance. Work is said to be done on an object when the force on the object causes the object to move some distance. Ife the object does not move, no work is done immaterial of how much force is exerted. There are many situations when force is exerted but work is not done. For example, if you hold a piece of wood while helping in a project, effort is done to hold the wood in place, but since the force doesn t cause the wood to move, work is not said to be done. The force has to be in the direction of motion to require work to be done. Answer 2: The formula for calculating work is: Work (J) = Force (N) x Distance (m) Thus, the amount of work done can be determined by multiplying Force with Distance. Answer 3: Here two scenarios are given. a. Force of 2N moves an object 3 meters: Here work is calculated as: W = F x D = 2N x 3m = 6 Nm (6 Joules) b. Force of 3N moves an object 2 meters: Here work is calculated as: W = F x D = 3N x 2m = 6 Nm (6 Joules) Thus, in both cases, the work done is same, i.e. 6 Joules. Answer 4: Here, we need to move 5 large cans of paint from basement to the second floor. Let us assume that the Force for lifting one can is 1N and the height of one floor is 1m. Thus, the below two scenarios are taken as: a. When all the cans are lifted and taken to second floor all at once, the calculation for work done is: W = 5N (5 cans each of 1N) x 2m (2 floors each ... Hurston uses foreshadowing and irony to demonstrate the disintegrated relationship between the abusive husband and the diligent wife. Throughout the story, it becomes obvious that the husband does not oblige by the motto, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Hurston s use of irony and foreshadowing helps reveal the fact that the good will prevail and Sykes will finally get what he deserves. Finally, one man says, Syke Jones ain t wuth de shot an powder hit would tek tuh kill em. Not to huh he ain t (357) while another man adds, ...an we oughter kill im (358). It seems like Hurston portrays this hostility to reiterate to the reader that Sykes will fall victim to a well deserved death. With millions of followers from around the globe, it has grown to become one of the largest religious faiths. Every single one of these Christians has their own unique story about how their faith has significantly affected their lives. In his book, George Weigel shares his experience as a Catholic growing up in late 1950 s and 1960 s in Baltimore. On page 9 of his book Letters to a Young Catholic , he says The real Catholic difference ... was, at bottom, a way of seeing the world (Weigel 9). This means that what separates a Catholic from the rest is our experience and knowledge of God, through which we are given the power to experience the world differently than most others can. I do feel this way as well. Being Catholic, I feel that I definitely experience the world differently than others. Whenever I see or hear about a tragic event that has occurred, I can hold solace in the idea that everything is all part of God s master plan and that it will all work out in the end. • 50. Some Legal Case Studies Legal Case Studies Question One The basic premise of this case has to do with contract law and how that is applied. Since Australian law follows the principles set down in English contract law (as is the case with most other English speaking countries), most of the basic legislation differs little from that basis. However, there have been cases and specific legislation that make Australian contracts unique. First, it has to be understood what is necessary for a contract to be legal, and then the determination has to be made whether John and Anton s verbal contract met those requirements. Australian contract law looks at oral contracts with the same degree of obligation on the part of the contractors as it does a written contract in most instances. Maritime insurance must be contracted via a signed agreement as must most contracts where land is exchanged (Fifoot s Law of Contract). This varies somewhat according to jurisdiction, but most Australian jurisdictions show no distinction between written and oral contracts. For either type of contract to be legal, it has to follow the six rules of contract: Agreement where one party makes an offer and the other accepts it; Consideration where one party gives something in exchange for something from the other party; Intention where both parties intend to abide by the contract; Capacity where both parties are mentally capable of understanding the contract; Genuine consent where both parties agree to the contract of their own ... The Changing Roles and Experiences of Probation Officers Introduction According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were over 4 million adults on probation in the United States in 2010. Today more and more agencies have shifted from simply monitoring an offender s compliance to using evidenced based practices to reduce recidivism rates. The intense involvement with offenders caused by this shift exposes officers to many new stressors that previously did not exist. A recent study by Kirsten R. Lewis, M.Ed., Ladonna S. Lewis, Ph.D., and Tina M. Garby, Psy.D., examined whether specific caseload events are associated with stress and burnout among this career specialty using various survey instruments. The results confirmed 2 of their hypothesis that officers who reported violent and sexual recidivism on their caseloads, offender suicide, and threats and/or assaults in the line of duty scored significantly higher on measures of traumatic stress and burnout... Length of service was also a contributing factor. The authors report of job stress on probation officers is applicable to any human service professional and especially supervisors, managers and administrators who have the capacity to make meaningful change by creating training programs and establishing ways to deal with the negative caseload events.
