Loss of Innocence in Sarah´s Key
Loss of Innocence A child is known for having innocence, and bad experiences strip kids of it. In
Sarah s Key by Tatiana De Rosnay, experiences cause a loss of innocence due to loss of freedom, loss
of hope, and loss of family. Freedom is a right that allows humans to live life to the fullest. In society
when a child has no basic rights of freedom, it causes them to grow up and lose their innocence. In
Sarah s Key, Sirka describes how she feels at the camp: The girl noticed a handful of people watching
them through the barbed wire.... The girl felt like she had become someone else. Someone hard, and
rude, and wild. Sometimes she fought with the older children, the ones who tried to grab the old stale
bread she had found. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She screamed the swearwords in her mind....he would not find her. Never bastards, dirty bastards. (
Rosnay129 130) Sirka has to hide from the Germans under the potatoes , because she knows that they
are coming for her . The thought of the Germans get[ting] her is causing her to use all the swearwords
her mother ha[s] forbidden her ever to use . Going against her mom by using words such as bastards is
an example of how she no longer is innocent. She is disobeying her authorities, by using language that
is not kid friendly. Sirka is no longer the sweet daughter, she has lost her naïve personality, changing
to a ruthless girl with a bad mouth. Lastly, is when Sirka hears rumors of the children getting
separated from the adults: There were rumors, rumors going around the camp. The parents were going
to be sent east, to work....She repeated the conversation to her mother. She said no... They couldn t
separate the children from the parents. In that sheltered gentle life that seemed far away, the girl would
have believed her mother.... But in this harsh new world, the girl felt she had grown up. She felt older
than her mother. (Rosnay 70 71) Sirka no longer lives in that sheltered gentle life that seemed far away
. She currently is kept in a camp, and may be split up from her parents. She no longer has a choice if
she wants to be with her parents, as the French are seperat[ing] the children from the parents . In this
harsh new world Sirka

Truth and Troop Hardships in a Chapter of The Things They...
Throughout Tim O Brien s short work How to tell a true war story O Brien has two reoccurring
themes. One is of the desensitization of the troops during their hardship regarding the events of the
Vietnam War, and the other is of the concept of truth. Truth may seem simple enough to explain, but is
in fact endowed with many layers. The story is chalked full of contradictions, as well as lies, and
embellishments, and yet O Brien claims that these are the truth. The truth, whether it be war or society
s, is in fact a concept that can be conveyed many times and in many ways. Whereas each is
independently untrue, the combined collaboration of these half truths is in essence the only real truth.
People in such intense situations, such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the morale and the emotional tolerance of the troops has been pushed to cope with unbearable
times, they may have to insert more facts that are completely false, so that not only does the listener
feel, but the story teller feels as well. All you can do is tell it one more time, patiently, adding and
subtracting, making up a few things to get at the real truth, (684) or feeling. So in essence, this
embellished half truth of a story is as true as the facts from a history book bringing us one step closer
to the ultimate truth.
The personal witnessing of events is a critical point of view in telling a true story. It may not be the
entire truth, but it is the truth, as it seemed to the individual. The ideas get mixed up; you tend to miss
a lot. And then afterward, when you go to tell about it, there is always that surreal feeling of what
seemed to happen, which makes the story seem untrue. But in fact represents the truth exactly how it
seemed. (677) Such as is the case of Curt Lemon s death. Rat Kiley was having a good time, laughing
with his best friend when Lemon stepped into the sunlight. In that instant he must have thought that
the sunlight had killed him. But if I could ever get the story right...then you would believe the last
thing Curt Lemon believed, which for him must ve been the final truth. (683) The truth appeared to
Curt Lemon appeared as if he was killed by the

Ancient Greece And Ancient Roman Empires Essay
In today s time people always say that everything that seems to be new is just really something remade
from the past. Throughout time and space works of art and literature spread around and are adapted to
what a certain culture needs. This glocalizing means taking the original form and manipulating it so it
can best fit the audience in which is viewing it. Whether it be translating something from one
language to another or even completely changing something that was intended for adults so it could be
easy for children to learn. Similarly, in the transition between the Ancient Greece and Ancient Roman
Empires so many aspects of the Grecian culture is adapted by the Romans but they glocalize it in
order to get more Romans on board with what the Greeks thought of. Even the Ancient Roman writer
and philosopher Seneca glocalized Euripides play Hippolytus. Despite the five hundred year time
difference between Euripides Hippolytus and Seneca s Phaedra, Seneca makes his best attempt to
copy the play but including aspects of the Roman culture he lived in. The culture gap between Ancient
Greece and Rome ultimately affects how the readers perceive the story and how different the two tales
actually are. Between 30 and 40 C.E. Seneca s writing started becoming increasingly popular
throughout the Roman Empire. On the other hand, many people did not support his philosophical
ideas such as stoicism. Seneca s stoic philosophy is defined as a philosophy that flourished in ancient

Irony In Lamb To The Slaughter
In 1953 Lamb to the slaughter was lastly published by the author Roald Dahl. Initially Dahls short
stories were rejected including Lamb to the Slaughter. Fortutiously Harper s magazine overlooked the
short story lamb to the slaughter and published it as soon as possible. Dahl as a childrens book author
wanted to demonstrate the ability aspects of human perversity, cruelty, and violence. After his return
from war Dahl stories became very dull. This short story prefigures the abnormality seen in the

Fine Arts Personal Statement Of Intent
I have always enjoyed the fine arts. When i was in the fourth grade I won a school project for
designing the yearbook cover. I was proud of the accomplishment and to my surprise I won the next
year also! I realized I had a passion and talent for design. During my middle school and high school
years I designed posters and programs related to school events. I was proud I designed the winning
poster for fast 50 contest with Michigan schools.
During my senior year I decided to attend Southwestern Michigan and major in graphic design.
This past year while attending school I have designed posters for theater productions for Central
Michigan University. My ultimate goal is to obtain a Bachelor of fine arts in graphic design which

Industrial Worker Research Paper
Once called The City of Smokestacks , Everett, Washington was booming with blue collar jobs, with
over two dozen saw and shingles mills making home there throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
However, the workers of Everett (and indeed, the entire United States at the time) dealt with extensive
labor hours and hazardous working conditions. In response to these conditions, much of the city s
workforce began to unionize, which was readily accessible with Everett s twenty five local unions.
In 1914, the city of Everett was recovering from a sudden recession, which allowed business owners
to lower pay rates, but by 1916, the mill workers had not yet received their prior pay scale. Angered
by this, roughly four hundred shingle workers planned ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Verona was constructed in 1910 at the Martinolch shipyard at Dockton, Washington. On January 10th,
1936, after completing its last run from Bainbridge Island, Verona was burned to non repair.
The picture above is the Verona, somewhere on the Puget Sound.
Once the ship was right side up, Engineer Shellgren put the engines hard astern, allowing the steamer
to escape. In the harbor, Captain Chance Wiman alerted the approaching Calista and returned to
Seattle.
When the massacre ended, two citizen deputies were dead along with roughly twenty injured,
including Donald McRae. The Industrial Workers of the World confirmed five dead, with twenty
seven injured. Current Governor, Ernest Lister, of the State of Washington issued companies of
militias to Everett and Seattle to help maintain order as a result of the shooting.
Upon their return to Seattle, seventy four wobblies were arrested due to the Everett Massacre , along
with Thomas H. Tracy, leader of the IWW. Charged with the murder of two deputies, they were taken
to Snohomish County Jail. Thomas Tracy was acquitted by a jury on May 5th, 1917, after a two month
trial. Within a short amount of time all charges on the seventy three defendants were dropped, and

Comparison Of The Passionate Shepherd And The Nymph s Reply
Compare Contrast writing lesson
Compare Contrast writing lesson
The two works The passionate shepherd and The nymph s reply are very well connected even though
they come from different authors, However, both poems are very unique when it comes to their
attitude towards the subject. The passionate shepherd is a very upbeat poem that highlights the
positive atmosphere the shepherd believes he can provide for the nymph, If she were to come to be
with him as his lover. He has a very optimistic look towards the world and expresses this through his
use of the nature around him to try and win over the nymph. And we will sit upon rocks, Seeing the

The nymph knows that the shepherd is not committed to loving her as he has come so quickly and has
not even had a chance to really even meet her. She provides the realism that is needed to help him
understand why she will not say yes to his offer. Her view of nature is well affected by her perception
of time. She compares his love to that of the goods that he offers her, and how as time goes on that
they will begin to rot and fade away. Time drives the flocks from field to fold When rivers rage and
rocks grow cold, And Philomel becometh dumb, The rest complains of cares to come. she points out
how the rocks they would sit on will turn cold with the winter, and the river will start to grow from the
weather. the flocks of sheep will be brought in from the cold, so all he promised will be gone in the
end. She wants a love that will last, but his offer shows that he hasn t matured enough to provide what
she truly desires. Once he finds this she believes he may have a chance, but until then he must hope to
understand what she desires and that he will experience some sort of positive change of himself. In
closing the desires of the shepherd may seem great, but they are rooted in some of the most
unhonorable characteristics of society. Those of an older era, one of constant death and suffering of
people all to support those who did

Baker Adhesive Case Essay
John Kroeger FINA 470 Baker Adhesive Case March 22, 2012 1. How profitable is the original sale to
Novo once the exchange rate changes are acknowledged? How has the exchange rate risk, which
affected the value of the order, been managed? In the original order, Nova was billed BRL 104,338.30
for their purchase. After the exchange of currency from BRL to U.S. dollars, Baker was estimated to
receive $48,371.24 (104,338.30 * .4636). This means that Baker brought in $55,967.06 less from their
deal with Nova than was expected. Since the exchange rate risk was not managed, Baker brought in
significantly less than was estimated from their deal with Nova and after subtracting their total cost
from what they brought in, Baker only made a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Novo s first order to Baker consisted of 1210 gallons of adhesive. Their second order increased in size
by 50% to result in an order of 1815 gallons of adhesive. Baker also faced an increase in costs of their
materials by 10%. Baker only had to buy 25% of the products needed to create the order Novo
requested because they had the other 75% on had so the 10% increase in cost only applied to the new
25% of materials. Novo s price per gallon of adhesives for their first order was 86.23 in Brazilian real.
To find the new price per gallon for the adhesives we need to take into account the change in material
cost. We then come up with the following equation: 86.23*(.25*.1) =2.16+86.23=88.39 New price per
gallon The component (.25*.1) comes from the increase in material cost and the amount of materials
that increase applies to being that only 25% of the materials needed for the order had to be purchased
because the other 75% was already on hand. Baker s costs for Novo s new order are as follows (given
the 50% difference in size order between the first order and the new order): Labor | 9000 | Materials
(with 10% increase in costs) | 52000 | Manufacturing Overhead | 6000 | Administrative Overhead |
3000 | Total Costs | 70000 | Now, to find the price of the sale in real for Novo and the revenue for
Baker we have the equation: 1815*88.39 = 160,430 1815 is the amount of gallons Novo needs, 88.39
is the price per gallon we found

Value of Education
Value of Education In his essay Is College Worth the Money? , Daniel S. Cheever, Jr. contends that,
The real question is whether students are getting their money s worth (102). He emphasizes the value
of education and not only the cost. Higher education is the focus of Cheever s essay, but I believe the
same question of worth can be asked concerning elementary through high school education as well.
Both public and private schools offer distinctive educational opportunities and each individual needs
to resolve the question of value. There are many facets that give value to an education; however, the
cost cannot be ignored. Parents make the initial choices for their children s education. The choice is
primarily based on economics, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Our school included them in the extra curricular activities offered which provided an avenue for
greater social interaction. Nevertheless, there appears to be value in the customized approach to
education that home schooling allows. Another aspect of valuing an education, in particular a college
education, is a monetary one. The earnings potential of receiving a college degree drives many
students to pursue a post secondary education. Cheever points out that college graduates are likely to
make much more money in their lifetimes than those with only a high school education (103). One
thing that needs to be factored into that calculation though is the amount of debt a student will have to
repay after graduating. Student loans usually have a 5% to 6% interest rate that adds up through the
years. For example, one of my cousins who graduated from college in 2000 is still repaying student
loans. Even though they may be earning a decent salary, in our current economy, it may make it more
difficult for a college graduate to purchase a home, have a family or save for retirement when
overloaded with educational debt. This issue makes a case that the cost of education may be too high
for those that cannot pay the tuition without going into debt. Students and parents should be expected
to pay for the largest portion of a college education; however, the costs need to be less

Purple Hibiscus Analysis
Religious Conflict and Influence:
The Root of the Problem in Purple Hibiscus Purple Hibiscus (2003) by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie,
is a novel with a strong impact and effective demonstration of potential issues among different
communities with different beliefs. It takes place 20th century Nigeria in times where government
corruption is on the rise which results in major tension in society. The main character, Kambili, from
whom which the point of view derives from, is a shy and obedient girl. Papa, Kambili s father, is a
very powerful, strict, and religious man with questionable tendencies relating to the way he treats his
family. Mama, Kambili s mother, Jaja, Kambili s brother, Papa Nnukwu, Papa s father, Aunty Ifeoma,
Papa s sister, and Kambili have all been negatively affected by Papa s actions which are all dictated by
religion. Religion in Purple Hibiscus is the root of the conflict and without it, there wouldn t be any
story to be told. Adichie brilliantly demonstrates this theme of negative religious influence by deeply
highlighting the emotions of each character in every event that takes place which allows the reader to
gain better insight into the story. Adichie s way of conveying the emotions of the characters is
especially prominent when emotional pain is involved. This detailed emotional insight is shown when
Papa, lowered the kettle into the tub, tilted it toward my feet. He poured the hot water on my feet,

of whether it is safe or harmful to people with serious conditions, such as cancer. To add on to the

Some argue that dispensaries help their community and the economy, while others believe that they

Shintoism In Princess Mononoke
Princess Mononoke was released in 1997, and became the highest grossing film in Japan until Titanic
came out later that year. It was meant to be director Hayao Miyazaki s last film before he went into
retirement, and is praised as one of his absolute masterpieces. Today, I will be critiquing two articles
that discuss aspects of Princess Mononoke s themes and influences, one that relates Shintoism to
Miyazaki s narratives by Oscar Garza, and another that focuses on the icons found throughout his
filmography by Mohammad Amzad Hossain and Wei Hsin Fu.
First a quick summary: Princess Mononoke follows the last prince of the Emishi named Ashitaka who,
when defending his village from a demonic boar, is cursed to die. In order to lift the curse, Ashitaka
travels west and finds Iron Town, a mining settlement on the outskirts of a divine forest. He meets
their leader, Lady Eboshi, who is currently at war with the forest gods. Disapproving of the violence
that the town people partake in against the forest, Ashitaka seeks to meet with the gods and their
human daughter, San. The dwellers of the forest wish to kill all the humans in an attempt to take back
their home. Now Ashitaka must become a peace keeper and stop an all out war, hoping that by doing
so the Shishigami, also known as the Forest Spirit, will lift the curse.

structuralism, the idea of relating aspects of cultural practices and their

The Workforce Is Growing Older As The Population Ages
The workforce is growing older as the population ages. The elderly in this generation are living
significantly longer. The amount of older workers is increasing due to the baby boomer generation.
The number of older workers over 55 is projected to grow at nearly four times the rate of the overall

The number of workers between the ages of 65 and 74 and those aged 75 and up are predicted to soar
by more than 80 percent. By 2016, workers age 65 and over are expected to account for 6.1 percent of
the total labor force, up sharply from their 2006 share of 3.6 percent (U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics,

Older workers are working longer due to the decrease in financial assets, low interest rates, shift to

Administrative Justice Model
Learning the history of the police force of England, Ireland, and Wales justice systems was a pretty
eye opening experience for me because I only know the American police force. We learn the primary
emphasis is on the history and development of the two major national systems of Administrative
Justice Model with the American Common Law Model. On this trip I was able to broaden my
understanding of and appreciation for criminal justice practices and issues in the England, Ireland and
Wales criminal justice systems. I was able to explore the conflict and distinctions between legal
requirements, personal morality, and ethical principles and beliefs. I was able to enhance my

the problem by setting up a Peace Preservation Force in 1814 and later a system of county
constabularies under the Constabulary Act of 1822, a single police force, The Constabulary of Ireland,
was established in 1836. The Constabulary of Ireland was a trained and disciplined force under the
central control of the government administration at Dublin Castle. It represented a fresh start in
policing and members served under a strict code, which governed all aspects of their lives, on and off
duty. Elaborate precautions were taken to ensure that its members displayed strict impartiality at all
times. The Constabulary of Ireland carried out a full range of policing tasks, but it s most important
task was that of security, due to the ever present threat of nationalist insurrection. Due to this it was
organized as a colonial constabulary and as an armed, quasi military force, rather than along the lines
of other conventional police forces in the British Isles. It says, The Garda Síochána na hÉireann (in

The Impact of Online Communities on Physica Social...
Abstract Nowadays, people spend much time in online communities to network with virtual friends
and play role plays. They provide an advantage for people with special needs who cannot leave the
house, because they benefit from the accessibility of the internet. Moreover, they help people who
often move to stay in touch with their friends. Nevertheless, spending too much time in online
communities leads to drawbacks in the development of the user s personality. More energy is
dedicated to the virtual life than to real life and people lose track of their personalities while busy
building online ones. Also, frequent users of online communities have difficulties beginning
meaningful real life relationships. Virtual friendships are shallow due ... Show more content on

Since many people work abroad, in globalized companies and the chances of being able to stay in the
same job for more than five years are low, society is constantly on the move and grows internationally
and everybody has friends who live everywhere in the world and they don t see as much as they used
to. Since the establishment of online communities, however, these people possess a tool that makes it
easier to stay in touch with old friends and to get to know new ones as well as establish business
relations with people from all over the world within seconds. In conclusion, online communities are
useful for people with special needs and internationally driven lives. On the other hand, online
communities like Second Life limit peoples abilities of developing their own personalities. By
projecting their lives onto avatars, it is hard to differentiate between the real world and the virtual
world. Success and failure as well as capabilities and skills that are experienced online are oftentimes
lacking in real life, although this is hardly noticed. (Scribner, 2007). It is so much easier to be
everyone you want to be in the online world: The shy guy turns into a womanizer and the unemployed
pretends to be a wealthy businessman driving a Mercedes. And while more and more time is spent
online with the virtual alter ego, Second Life gradually becomes First Life . It is a time consuming

The Girl With Only Two Arms And Two Legs Literary Analysis
I bet you like to be treated well. In the story, Quarta was not treated well. Her classmates were really
mean t o her even though she was really nice to everybody else. The theme in the story The Girl With
Only Two Arms And Two Legs By is to treat people how you would like to be treated. You can tell
this is true because Quarta is very nice to everybody but nobody is nice to her. I know this because she
lets anybody play One Ball, a game she introduced to her classmates. One Ball is a game that is very
close to volleyball. I also know that this is the theme because Quarta helps others. Even though her
classmates who had four arms and four legs are mean to Quarta because she has only two of each.
This shows that she follows the golden rule even though her classmates are mean. Last but not least
the other kids are plain out mean to her. These are reasons why this story is about treat people how
you want to be treated. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Water Management From The Detroit Water Authority ( Dwa )...
Between April of 2014 and October of 2015, the city of Flint, Michigan redirected their water
management from the Detroit Water Authority (DWA), sourced from Lake Heron, to the Flint Water
System (FWS), sourced from the Flint River. This was a temporary, cost saving measure in
anticipation of a forthcoming pipeline, also from Lake Heron (Kennedy et al., 2016). After the
transition from the DWA to the FWS, residents were concerned with the water s possible toxicity,
questioning its odor, color, and taste. Soon, bacteria, including Escherichia coli, as well as disinfection
byproducts including total trihalomethanes [chloroform and bromoform, among others] were detected
in the water (Hanna Attisha, LaChance, Sadler, Schnepp, 2016). After the discovery of E. coli in
August 2014, residents were instructed to boil their drinking water (Goovaerts, 2016). In December
2014, water samples revealed high levels of lead, copper, and the trihalomethanes mentioned above.
Residents then reported skin irritation and declining health and were strongly advised against drinking
tap water without testing and filtration. Further testing of the water in February 2015 reported a water
lead level (WLL) of 104 µg/L, a number astronomically higher than the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) s action level of 15 µg/L (Goovaerts, 2016). As a result, on October 16, 2015, the water
source was switched back to the DWA. Pregnant and breastfeeding women and children were

The Great Depression By Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal...
What do you think about when you hear The Great Depression? Some might say the worst economic
time in the United States of America. The Great Depression was one of the longest and innermost
economic downturn in the world of history between the years of 1929 and 1939. Also, The Great
Depression led to the Federal Government having a more involved role in America s economy, this
was done through the creation of Franklin D. Roosevelt s New Deal Legislation, which turned out to
be effective because, he helped the American people find more jobs, he created social security, and
many more beneficial acts. On the other hand, The Great Depression had many issues and conditions.

Many Americans went wild investing beyond their needs. They were investing with money they didn t
have. Investors had to pay ten percent of the total value of stocks at the time of buying. The rest they
could pay in installments. The stock market could not be stabilized. There were huge amount of
money being borrowed out of the stock market. There were huge number of new banks that were
cropping up every single day. They didn t have any rules telling them the amount of reserves that was
allowed to be loaned out. They also didn t have any regulations to determine the minimum capital
required to start up a bank. The banks were closing faster than they were opening. The situations
became worse when the stock market crashed in 1929. It loss around fourteen billion dollars of

the SEC was to protect investors from dangerous or illegal financial practices or fraud, by requiring

In this paper, Nyerere s views on education are examined with a view to determine the extent of their
relevance to contemporary theory of education in Kenya. This analysis is concerned with 3 aspects.
First, an exploration of possible theoretical contexts of his views on education is undertaken with a
view to obtaining a basis for an intelligible discussion. Second, an examination of education for self
reliance is undertaken. This is followed by an analysis of education for liberation as espoused by
Nyerere. This is followed by a delineation of salient views that can enrich contemporary education in
Kenya. Theoretical framework The liberal theory Liberalism envisions the ideal society to be one that
embraces a wide range of individual liberties. These include, personal dignity, free expression,
religious tolerance, right to own property, freedom of association, transparency of government,
limitations on government power, the rule of law, equality, free market economy and free trade
(Wikipedia,http://en.wikipedia.org/Liberalisms). It is incumbent upon government to uphold these
freedoms in order to guarantee stability and peace. In addition, liberalism tends to encourage
representative democratic governance. Here, the elected representatives are guided by the rule of law

Mistakes In The Medusa And The Snail
Humans natural tendency to execute faults are ultimately the path to their accomplishments. In The
Medusa and the Snail, Lewis Thomas claims that mistakes are the highest of human endowments and
in which the response to a mistake is what ultimately shapes progress. Although mistakes can be
detrimental in certain circumstances, it is through these errors that humans are capable to experience
that they can eventually learn and progress forward. After a mistake is made, it is possible to do better
than before and achieve a higher goal, in comparison to when no error is performed. If one continues
to succeed without faults, it is difficult to understand what can be done to really excel. Thomas Edison
is known to be the individual in history who successfully invented the lightbulb. However, Edison did

Edison s case, he viewed that the invention was only a goal that took 1,000 steps. He extended his

lightbulb in one try, he would learn less of the techniques and continue to only retain the minimum
amount of information needed. Due to a human s natural tendency to create errors, Edison needed to
continually go through the process of trial and error. However, this course of action led him to achieve
the title of become the first person to successfully invent the lightbulb. On a personal level, I also
encountered a situation in which my mistake allowed me to improve more in the future. A few years

Shakespeare s Treatment Of Women In Hamlet
Shakespeare is known for his amazing literary works and his strong, female characters, none of whom
appear in one of his most famous literary works Hamlet. In the tragedy Hamlet, Shakespeare depicts
women as weak lesser beings whose only purpose is to serve men either as servants, wives or
pawns. The female characters of Hamlet certainly leave something to be desired. Ophelia and Gertrude
are the only female characters in Hamlet and are constantly used throughout the play to further the
agendas of the men of Hamlet. Typically the women of Shakespeare are strong, independent women
who don t need a man to rescue them women like Cordelia, Portia, and Rosalind. It makes a one think

Gertrude is the Queen of Denmark who, after her husband is murdered, marries the new king, her
brother in law Gertrude is used throughout the play by her new husband, King Claudius, to further his
own agenda for power and control Claudius uses Gertrude to spy on Hamlet to see if Hamlet has truly
gone mad, this plot ends with Hamlet killing Polonius Ophelia starts the play as the love interest of
Hamlet but after he begins his plan to appear crazy to get revenge for his father s death Ophelia is
scorned by Hamlet who constantly demeans her to make himself appear crazy In his efforts to achieve
revenge against Claudius for his father s murder, Hamlet kills Polonius, Ophelia s father (Shakespeare,
1750), The death of her father sends Ophelia into hysteria and ends with her killing herself. Many
believe that Shakespeare s poor view of women in Hamlet is due to his unhappy marriage.
Ophelia and Gertrude are a far cry from other Shakespearean women. Cordelia of King Lear stays true
to herself by not grovelling to her father to gain land and power, instead she tells him that she loves
him as much as being his daughter says she should and he banishes her. Her two sisters then deceive
their father into thinking they love more than life itself and after they receive their land they throw
their father and Cordelia into the dungeons. While he lies defeated in the dungeon Cordelia teaches

suppose I should start my story at the beginning. I mean, it wouldn t make sense to start it at the end or

Anyways, I ll just start at the beginning, which just happens to be when I was out in the woods one

besides her was a basket that was practically overflowing with marvelous smells. My stomach
growled again. I patted down my grey fur and smelled my breath by breathing into my paw and
sniffing. I tied up the side flaps on my red hunting hat that had holes cut in it for my ears to poke

Examples Of Falsity In Fyodor Dostoevsky s Notes From...
PART 1: UNDERSTANDING THE UNDERGROUND MAN Falsity is defined by the online Oxford
dictionary as the fact of being untrue, incorrect, or insincere . In the novel Notes from Underground,
Fyodor Dostoevsky highlights the falsity, or artificiality of not only Russian individuals, but of
Russian culture as a whole. The novel describes falsity as people who are superficial and shallow.
While the main character, the Underground Man, did not consider himself a slave to the falsity, he
observed it in others he came into contact with. A good example of this is when the Underground Man
went to dinner with his friends (they were hardly so). At this dinner, he mentions how the individuals
are good looking on the outside but rather unintelligent on the inside. At one point, he even says that
one of them has a handsome but silly face (Dostoevsky), thus indicating that on the outside, his face
was handsome but at the same time he was also silly , or foolish and shallow. They were not who the
portrayed themselves to be. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Here s how: as a consequence of their narrow mindedness, they take the most immediate and

others that they have found an indisputable basis for their doings, and so they feel at ease; and that,

Essay Interpretations of American History
Interpretations of American History
The world is full of rich culture, diversity and experiences unique to each individual. When
determining the validity of historic accounts we must factor in that particular historian s point of view,
which should be characterized by ethnicity, idealogy, theoretical or methodological preference. With
these factors views of the past often vary from person to person. In this essay I will be discussing the
four different stages that shaped the writing of American history over the last 400 years.
According to Couvares, the writing of American history has passed through four stages: the
providential, the rationalist, the nationalist, and the professional. The providential stage took place

Bancroft believed that Anglo Saxons were racially destined to lead and spread freedom across the
globe. With the establishment of John Hopkins University, college education became more common
among middle class Americans, however only wealthy white men still only had access to that kind of
education. This new wave of historians insisted that knowledge of history and physics were of equal
importance.
The final stage of American history and progression according to Couvares, was the professional
stage. Professional scholars rose to prominence from 1910 1945. These historians believed that
modernity, industrialization, urbanization, and class conflict had fundamentally changed society.
Charles Beard argued that the constitution was not the product of wise men intent on balancing liberty
and order, but a clique of wealthy merchants and landowners who wanted a central government strong
enough to defend their privileges against the unruly masses. (Couvares 77 2). Beard also thought that
many of the major conflicts in society were between economic interest groups. Many critics found
flaws in his idealogy, but at the same time it inspired them to find answers to questions that plagued
the people.
Over the past 400 years, these historians all had different stances on how they thought to improve
society. With the mix of cultural backgrounds, and ethnicities no two viewpoints will ever be exactly
the same. Couvares

Social class

We are aware that there are a variety of different types of stratification however social class is the
main area of division in people. A number of different theories have been made to bring together an
explanation on the ways social class is viewed and how society notices this effect. I will give
comparison of Marx and Weber s perspectives on social class and inequality will be made, as we know
it is quiet debatable on who s view is correct but I will compare and contrast the similarities and

The main difference ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Weber made a significant difference to Marx s theory; he believed in groups with held a status. class
was defined as unequal distribution of economic rewards where as a status group was an unequal
distribution of social honor (Giddens, 1991, pg212) According to Haralambos (2002 pg34) a status
group is described as a group made up of individuals who are awarded a similar amount of social
honor and therefore share the same status stratification (Haralambos Holborn (2002), pg 37). In the
present British Society social class is greatly influential on our everyday lives it affects each day of
career, health housing. In Britain during the 1990 s there wasn t much of a great change in sources that
a trend of class inequality being decreased. According to Haralambos and Holborn (2002) close
attention was paid to the closing gap of inequality for example the socio economic group attributes of
employment was influenced by social class for many centuries. Repeatedly the working classes have
only been given the chance to work in an unskilled occupation or one which was half skilled, given
that their class showed their knowledge educational level they were unable to move up the socio
economic hierarchy, this matches Marx s idea of a culture with capitalism involved.

Conflict Between The Conflict And Supporting Evidence
Have you ever been a part of a conflict? Perhaps the conflict existed in your home because you want
your children to do chores, but your spouse disagrees, or perhaps you have had a conflict in the
workplace where a co worker, no matter what you said was always in disagreement with you. Whether
at home or work, it is best to resolve conflict as both instances, the conflict could create an uneasy
situation at home or in the workplace and could result in people being hurt, work not be accomplished
or even a physical altercation. Therefore, it is recommended that instead of allowing conflict to
remain, that instead the conflict is resolved For that reason I will describe a conflict within an
organization or team which I am familiar with, identify and describe the source(s) and level of the
conflict and supporting evidence, describe the steps taken to resolve the conflict, describe a minimum
of three conflict outcomes that could reasonably occur as a result of the resolution and the support for
my reasoning for each possible outcome. First I will begin with a basic description of conflict.
Conflict, in my opinion, is when a disagreement occurs between two or more people, someone having
an opposing view or even an internal conflict such as should I eat the entire box of cookies , just to
name a few. In fact, according to Baack (2012), conflict is circumstances in which one party
negatively affects or seeks to negatively affect another party (Sec. 7.3). What this means

Cholera has re emerged as a major infectious disease in the recent past with a global increase in its
incidence. In 1994, cholera cases were notified from 94 countries the highest ever number of countries

dramatic and unexpected reappearance of epidemic cholera caused by V.cholerae 01 E1T or in Latin
America after 100 years absence from the region and unexpected appearance in 1992 in South India of

cases have increased in all the continents in the last few years; due to change in environments which
has created conducive atmosphere for the spread of cholera. Cholera is international notifiable disease

Hollywood B movies to Hollywood classics, A Night at the Movies invents what might have happened
in these Saturday afternoon matinees. Mad scientists, vampires, cowboys, dance men, Chaplin, and
Bogart, all flit across Robert Coover s riotously funny screen, doing things and uttering lines that are
as shocking to them as they are funny to the reader. As Coover s Program announces, you will get
Coming Attractions, The Weekly Serial, Adventure, Comedy, Romance, and more, but turned upside
down and inside out. It is perhaps more appropriate to call Coover s work a creative compilation as

A Night at the Movies presents examples of those constructed realities, the realities of films that we
are already familiar with, and then alters them.
Additionally, the creative and almost playful way in which Coover transports different story lines
across entertainment media lines from film to literature is an inventive technique of postmodern
literature. The tendency of postmodern art to be self referential is clearly at work in Coover s
compilation. He has created a work of art, based on art. His art of literature is derived from the art of
film; in fact, A Night at the Movies can be read and interpreted in such a way that the viewer may
actually feel as if she were spending the night at the movies.
As opposed to including a table of contents, A Night at the Movies begins with a program, outlining
the order of the progression of the read, or the night. The book begins with previews of coming
attractions, includes an installment of the current weekly serial, features an adventure, comedy and
romance film , does not fail to include a cartoon for the kiddies, and even has an intermission. The
linear structure is in no

Importance of Cross Cultural Communications
Effective cross cultural communication is one of the most important issues dealt with in business,
particularly when a firm operates at an international level. Communication is a process with three key
elements, which includes a source, an audience, and a channel. Communication derived from
businesses will have listeners that include, but are not limited to customers, employees, suppliers, and
the community (Caddy et al.). These listeners contribute to the success of a firm, which is why there is
so much emphasis put into creating appropriate channels of communication. This effect is further
amplified when dealing at an international level, where the effect of culture and time has more
bearing.
What makes effective communication important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many cultures employ a hierarchical approach to communication, but often this method of results in
important issues being dodged. This problem is highlighted in an (Nakamoto 2008) article on Japanese
companies. In the article it is reported that many of the Japanese companies employ a very rigid
communication structure, and overseas managers were hired to create a more efficient method of
communication. An open exchange or direct method of communication is much more effective as
ideas can be garnered from different levels of the organisation.
Overcoming various linguistic issues is another operational benefit experienced when an effective
communication channel is established. Due to the legal issues of each country, language differences do
not only affect face o face interaction, but written communications as well (Bovee 2008). Through
proper planning and research, however, a business is able to preempt such a problem from occurring,
possibly by arranging for an interpreter to translate.
Failing to establish an effective means for communication when an ethical issue arises can be
detrimental to the stability of a workplace. This problem is particularly pertinent, when you consider
the fact that globalization has diversified workplace cultures. This can lead to what Huntington (cited
in Eunson 2005) described as a clash of civilizations , due to the different perspectives on morality in
the western and eastern countries. Neglecting this issue can create

Emmett Slaughter By The Old Pullman Company
Emmett Slaughter was walking through the old Pullman Company building. It was cold, all he could
hear was the screeching of the old metal that was about to collapse. The building was condemned but
Emmet used to work there so he wanted to see it one last time, so he snuck inside to take one good last
look. Upon looking through the building he started to remember the Pullman company strike that
happened on May 11, 1894. That was the time he learned to fight for what he believes in without
violence.
It was a warm spring day in Chicago and he was like usual doing his job at Pullman Company. He
made sure the bolts were tight on the sleeping cars and were ready to put on the tracks. He got low
wages, 16 hour workdays and he was scared that any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Howdy Emmett Said Joseph. Then Emmet replied Get to work and quit messing around. You know I
ve been thinking I m going to tell I want a better place to stay, higher wages and less work hours...... I
m going to request to meet with him Said Joseph. Emmet bewildered spun around with such speed it
slightly spooked trampas and yelled You Fool, three people have already tried to talk to him and he
refused to even meet with them then he fired them!!! I think those are just rumors, everyone s just to
chicken to try. Said Joseph. Annoyed Emmet glared at Joseph and said Your job, if you lose it, it s not
my problem. Emmett finished saddling Destiny and he rode to work with Joseph riding closely
behind. They reached their destination dismounted and went their separate ways. A half hour later
Joseph came up to Emmett dragging his feet and sullen. Emmett said Joseph. Emmet looked up from
finishing his inspection. What? Emmett grumbled. You were right, I just lost my job. He wouldn t
even meet with me Joseph replied. Emmett glanced at him then said What did I tell you? Yes, I know,
you warned me. I m going home said Joseph. He walked over to Trampas, mounted him and rode off.
15 minutes later Jeff, Emmett s co worker came up to him and whispered We are having a meeting 11
o clock tonight at my place. Be there. Don t ask any questions, just show up. Then he walked away.

Cupid The Archer

The Archer, or should I say Cupid?
The Metropolitan Art Museum has a multitude of art galleries that hold a variety of art pieces that
have their own share of stories. The artwork that I chose to dig into the story of is a piece that the
museum credits to have been done by the High Renaissance artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti, himself.
This particular work is a type of sculpture in which the figures is shown in a three dimensional form,
or freestanding sculpture, that is standing at a height and width of 37 x 13 ¼ and is made purely out of
Carrara marble. The statue appears to no more than a young man, comparable to a putti, standing in
the contrapposto position which gives it a certain look of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Apparently, the marble sculpture of the boy is on display at the Met due to the fact of it being a loaned
art piece from The French Republic, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and it only gained as
much interest as it has because art experts began to debate on whether it is really an early
Michelangelo piece or not. To clarify, after spending numerous years in the lobby of the town house
on Fifth Avenue in France as an obscure waste of space, according to ARTnews magazine, a scholar of
Renaissance art named Kathleen Weil Garris Brandt said that she believed [the boy] to be a lost
sculpture by Michelangelo. The boy made front page news in January 1996 and inspired a flurry of
controversy and this debate drags on even to this day. The leading aspect that leads many to believe
that Michelangelo crafted it is the fact that the proportions are purposely far from realistic and the boy
promotes a certain kind of

  • 2. Loss of Innocence in Sarah´s Key Loss of Innocence A child is known for having innocence, and bad experiences strip kids of it. In Sarah s Key by Tatiana De Rosnay, experiences cause a loss of innocence due to loss of freedom, loss of hope, and loss of family. Freedom is a right that allows humans to live life to the fullest. In society when a child has no basic rights of freedom, it causes them to grow up and lose their innocence. In Sarah s Key, Sirka describes how she feels at the camp: The girl noticed a handful of people watching them through the barbed wire.... The girl felt like she had become someone else. Going against her mom by using words such as bastards is an example of how she no longer is innocent. She is disobeying her authorities, by using language that is not kid friendly. Sirka is no longer the sweet daughter, she has lost her naïve personality, changing to a ruthless girl with a bad mouth. Lastly, is when Sirka hears rumors of the children getting separated from the adults: There were rumors, rumors going around the camp. The parents were going to be sent east, to work....She repeated the conversation to her mother. She said no... They couldn t separate the children from the parents. In that sheltered gentle life that seemed far away, the girl would have believed her mother.... But in this harsh new world, the girl felt she had grown up. She felt older than her mother. • 3. Truth and Troop Hardships in a Chapter of The Things They... Throughout Tim O Brien s short work How to tell a true war story O Brien has two reoccurring themes. One is of the desensitization of the troops during their hardship regarding the events of the Vietnam War, and the other is of the concept of truth. Truth may seem simple enough to explain, but is in fact endowed with many layers. The story is chalked full of contradictions, as well as lies, and embellishments, and yet O Brien claims that these are the truth. The truth, whether it be war or society s, is in fact a concept that can be conveyed many times and in many ways. Whereas each is independently untrue, the combined collaboration of these half truths is in essence the only real truth. People in such intense situations, such ... Since the morale and the emotional tolerance of the troops has been pushed to cope with unbearable times, they may have to insert more facts that are completely false, so that not only does the listener feel, but the story teller feels as well. All you can do is tell it one more time, patiently, adding and subtracting, making up a few things to get at the real truth, (684) or feeling. So in essence, this embellished half truth of a story is as true as the facts from a history book bringing us one step closer to the ultimate truth. The personal witnessing of events is a critical point of view in telling a true story. It may not be the entire truth, but it is the truth, as it seemed to the individual. The ideas get mixed up; you tend to miss a lot. And then afterward, when you go to tell about it, there is always that surreal feeling of what seemed to happen, which makes the story seem untrue. But in fact represents the truth exactly how it seemed. (677) Such as is the case of Curt Lemon s death. Rat Kiley was having a good time, laughing with his best friend when Lemon stepped into the sunlight. In that instant he must have thought that the sunlight had killed him. But if I could ever get the story right...then you would believe the last thing Curt Lemon believed, which for him must ve been the final truth. • 4. Ancient Greece And Ancient Roman Empires Essay In today s time people always say that everything that seems to be new is just really something remade from the past. Throughout time and space works of art and literature spread around and are adapted to what a certain culture needs. This glocalizing means taking the original form and manipulating it so it can best fit the audience in which is viewing it. Whether it be translating something from one language to another or even completely changing something that was intended for adults so it could be easy for children to learn. Similarly, in the transition between the Ancient Greece and Ancient Roman Empires so many aspects of the Grecian culture is adapted by the Romans but they glocalize it in order to get more Romans on board with what the Greeks thought of. Even the Ancient Roman writer and philosopher Seneca glocalized Euripides play Hippolytus. Despite the five hundred year time difference between Euripides Hippolytus and Seneca s Phaedra, Seneca makes his best attempt to copy the play but including aspects of the Roman culture he lived in. The culture gap between Ancient Greece and Rome ultimately affects how the readers perceive the story and how different the two tales actually are. Between 30 and 40 C.E. Seneca s writing started becoming increasingly popular throughout the Roman Empire. On the other hand, many people did not support his philosophical ideas such as stoicism. She compares his love to that of the goods that he offers her, and how as time goes on that they will begin to rot and fade away. Time drives the flocks from field to fold When rivers rage and rocks grow cold, And Philomel becometh dumb, The rest complains of cares to come. she points out how the rocks they would sit on will turn cold with the winter, and the river will start to grow from the weather. the flocks of sheep will be brought in from the cold, so all he promised will be gone in the end. After the exchange of currency from BRL to U.S. dollars, Baker was estimated to receive $48,371.24 (104,338.30 * .4636). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Novo s first order to Baker consisted of 1210 gallons of adhesive. Their second order increased in size by 50% to result in an order of 1815 gallons of adhesive. Baker also faced an increase in costs of their materials by 10%. Baker only had to buy 25% of the products needed to create the order Novo requested because they had the other 75% on had so the 10% increase in cost only applied to the new 25% of materials. Novo s price per gallon of adhesives for their first order was 86.23 in Brazilian real. To find the new price per gallon for the adhesives we need to take into account the change in material cost. We then come up with the following equation: 86.23*(.25*.1) =2.16+86.23=88.39 New price per gallon The component (.25*.1) comes from the increase in material cost and the amount of materials that increase applies to being that only 25% of the materials needed for the order had to be purchased because the other 75% was already on hand. Baker s costs for Novo s new order are as follows (given the 50% difference in size order between the first order and the new order): Labor | 9000 | Materials (with 10% increase in costs) | 52000 | Manufacturing Overhead | 6000 | Administrative Overhead | 3000 | Total Costs | 70000 | Now, to find the price of the sale in real for Novo and the revenue for Baker we have the equation: 1815*88.39 = 160,430 1815 is the amount of gallons Novo needs, 88.39 is the price per gallon we found ... Our school included them in the extra curricular activities offered which provided an avenue for greater social interaction. Nevertheless, there appears to be value in the customized approach to education that home schooling allows. Another aspect of valuing an education, in particular a college education, is a monetary one. The earnings potential of receiving a college degree drives many students to pursue a post secondary education. Cheever points out that college graduates are likely to make much more money in their lifetimes than those with only a high school education (103). One thing that needs to be factored into that calculation though is the amount of debt a student will have to repay after graduating. Student loans usually have a 5% to 6% interest rate that adds up through the years. For example, one of my cousins who graduated from college in 2000 is still repaying student loans. Even though they may be earning a decent salary, in our current economy, it may make it more difficult for a college graduate to purchase a home, have a family or save for retirement when overloaded with educational debt. Between April of 2014 and October of 2015, the city of Flint, Michigan redirected their water management from the Detroit Water Authority (DWA), sourced from Lake Heron, to the Flint Water System (FWS), sourced from the Flint River. This was a temporary, cost saving measure in anticipation of a forthcoming pipeline, also from Lake Heron (Kennedy et al., 2016). After the transition from the DWA to the FWS, residents were concerned with the water s possible toxicity, questioning its odor, color, and taste. Soon, bacteria, including Escherichia coli, as well as disinfection byproducts including total trihalomethanes [chloroform and bromoform, among others] were detected in the water (Hanna Attisha, LaChance, Sadler, Schnepp, 2016). After the discovery of E. coli in August 2014, residents were instructed to boil their drinking water (Goovaerts, 2016). In December 2014, water samples revealed high levels of lead, copper, and the trihalomethanes mentioned above. Residents then reported skin irritation and declining health and were strongly advised against drinking tap water without testing and filtration. Further testing of the water in February 2015 reported a water lead level (WLL) of 104 µg/L, a number astronomically higher than the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) s action level of 15 µg/L (Goovaerts, 2016). PART 1: UNDERSTANDING THE UNDERGROUND MAN Falsity is defined by the online Oxford dictionary as the fact of being untrue, incorrect, or insincere . In the novel Notes from Underground, Fyodor Dostoevsky highlights the falsity, or artificiality of not only Russian individuals, but of Russian culture as a whole. The novel describes falsity as people who are superficial and shallow. While the main character, the Underground Man, did not consider himself a slave to the falsity, he observed it in others he came into contact with. A good example of this is when the Underground Man went to dinner with his friends (they were hardly so). At this dinner, he mentions how the individuals are good looking on the outside but rather unintelligent on the inside. These historians believed that modernity, industrialization, urbanization, and class conflict had fundamentally changed society. Charles Beard argued that the constitution was not the product of wise men intent on balancing liberty and order, but a clique of wealthy merchants and landowners who wanted a central government strong enough to defend their privileges against the unruly masses. It was cold, all he could hear was the screeching of the old metal that was about to collapse. The building was condemned but Emmet used to work there so he wanted to see it one last time, so he snuck inside to take one good last look. Upon looking through the building he started to remember the Pullman company strike that happened on May 11, 1894. That was the time he learned to fight for what he believes in without violence. It was a warm spring day in Chicago and he was like usual doing his job at Pullman Company. He made sure the bolts were tight on the sleeping cars and were ready to put on the tracks. He got low wages, 16 hour workdays and he was scared that any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Howdy Emmett Said Joseph. Then Emmet replied Get to work and quit messing around. The artwork that I chose to dig into the story of is a piece that the museum credits to have been done by the High Renaissance artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti, himself. This particular work is a type of sculpture in which the figures is shown in a three dimensional form, or freestanding sculpture, that is standing at a height and width of 37 x 13 ¼ and is made purely out of Carrara marble. The statue appears to no more than a young man, comparable to a putti, standing in the contrapposto position which gives it a certain look of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Apparently, the marble sculpture of the boy is on display at the Met due to the fact of it being a loaned art piece from The French Republic, Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and it only gained as much interest as it has because art experts began to debate on whether it is really an early Michelangelo piece or not. The boy made front page news in January 1996 and inspired a flurry of controversy and this debate drags on even to this day. The leading aspect that leads many to believe that Michelangelo crafted it is the fact that the proportions are purposely far from realistic and the boy promotes a certain kind of ...
