The Physical Aspects of the Mpenjati Estuary System
A study on the physical aspects of the Mpenjati estuary beach system.
Roxanne Munsamy
University Of KwaZulu Natal
Abstract
A study was conducted at the Mpenjati estuary on the 4th of August 2012 to determine the physical
aspects within the estuary beach system. This paper gives an overview of the factors affecting the
slope of the estuary, sediment sizes and the tidal prisms. The beach slope was measured using the
Emery board method and it was found to be characteristic of the KwaZulu Natal coastline. Wave
energy and sediment transport rates along the beach morphology are interlinked, high energy storms
tend to erode and flatten beaches whilst lower energy waves tend to be responsible for the reverse
process rebuilding breaches. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main aim of this study conducted on the Mpenjati estuary was to determine the effects of the
beach processes on temporarily open/closed estuaries, in particular wave action as well as the
transportation of sediment and to understand the influence that they may have on the state of the
estuary mouth. The objective of the study was to determine the elevation of the beach profile or slope
and grain size by using the Emery Board method as well as to analyze the natural stream flow into the
estuary using flow duration analysis with relation to mouth dynamics.
Materials and methods.
The Mpenjati estuary is a temporarily open/closed estuary which is located approximately 165km
Southwest of Durban. The river mouth is generally closed during the winter months and is enclosed by
a sand bar separating the saline rich ocean water from the fresh water river.
On field, the time as well as tide was noted down. The equipment needed was two measuring
poles/sticks with measurements in centimetres written on and a two meter length of rope. The Emery
board method was used and all procedures were followed accordingly. Each group consisted of 20
members and was then subdivided again into groups of ten. Students took a turn to be a seaward
surveyor and a landward surveyor, a data researcher and a geotechnical engineer. The respective
measurements were taken starting from the baseline as well as the cross shore data points.

Yonec And Bisclavret By Marie De France
Marie de France uses Yonec and Bisclavret to express the animal/human boundary in the medieval
period. In Bisclavret, Marie used the werewolf to show how animals lack reason. In Yonec, Marie uses
the hawk man to show how animal natures are correlated with the lower passions. Also in the
medieval period animals were thought to not have souls. The soul is defined as a person s moral or
emotional nature or sense of identity. This point is interesting because the body encapsulates the soul,
in a way that it hides your true identity, whether you are a human or a human who changes into an
animal. When Bisclavret and the knight changed their physical natures, they did not suddenly lack a
soul but their soul was preserved. The body just acts as a vessel ... Show more content on

She does this to add a dramatic element to the stories. In our minds, we subconsciously create positive
connotations to anything we deem as beautiful or good looking. But when she develops the characters
person more indeptly she reveals their negative attributes. As readers, we are caught off guard because
a person s looks are a kind of perceived identity. For instance, Bisclavret was described as a handsome
knight, but later it is revealed that he is a werewolf and for three days out the week he lives in the
deepest part of the woods and feeds off anything he can capture. Also, his wife is initially described as
worthy and attractive in appearance. However, although she doesn t transform into an animal she has a
beastly side that is later revealed in the Lais. Her inner beast is revealed when she betrays her
husband, the fear she has of her husbands condition is understandable but she fails to come to terms
with it. Instead she sells her body to a knight and convinces him to steal her husband s clothes,
knowing that would entrap him in his werewolf form. He would in turn receive her hand in married as
payment. By accepting her proposal, he allowed his beastly side to get the best of him and
condemning Bisclavret to remain naked in his beast like

The Bluest Eye Controversy
In the novel The Bluest Eye written by Toni Morrison, the author details the tragic story of a young
African American girl named Pecola Breedlove, who is exposed to bias social constructs that results in
her internalizing high levels of racist ideologies. The novel illustrates the controversy of the
perpetration of Eurocentric beauty standards and how it affects the black community, specifically the
children within it. Pecola is surrounded around the notion that white standards are favored within
American society. She vividly sees these implementations in aspects such as pop culture, the racial
hierarchy in education, and societal systematic order. These bias limitations subconsciously result in
detrimental effects on the psyches of the young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Morrison argues that the definition of whiteness and American identity is a construction made in
opposition to that of an Africanist presence in literature. Morrison states that the American identity is
based on ideals that can only be applied to whites. Furthermore, she goes on to detail that African
Americans cannot identify with the American ideal of freedom as the result of being brought to the
country as slaves According to Morrison, because has been clearly the preserve of white male views,
genius, and power, those views, genius, and the power are without relationship to and removed from
the overwhelming presence of black people in the United States (Morrison 5). Through the use of
language and style within literature there are clear determinates to help the reader establish which
characters identifies with what race within the composition. Morrison s meta critical approach allows
her to examine and prove her points on the centralization of race in literature and how it seems to
consistency establish and denounce the black existence in comparison to

Work As A Physical Therapist
Dillworth s work as a physical therapist puts her in a parallel position to a practitioner, as seen in First
Marblehead Corp. v. House, 541 F.3d 36 (1st Cir. 2008). The expert s testimony in First Marblehead
was relevant because the expert witness s professional background as a certified public accountant,
with degrees in economics and financial advisement, would assist the trier of fact with understanding
the financial complexities in the case from a practitioner s position. Id. at 36, 42. Dillworth s position

Questionnaire And Questionnaire On Customer Requirements...
4.1. Identify customer requirements
The customer is given a questionnaire and their responses are recorded in their own languages. SMEs
may not immediately have knowledge or action plans to meet the customer demands, but the
requirements need to be documented in the same way that it was delivered by the customers. After
which the CRs can be organized hierarchically with no limit on the number of the hierarchical levels
[3].
The customers are categorized as internal customers (e.g., stakeholders, managers, employees) and
external customers (e.g., individuals who use SMEs products or services). Ten customers can be
selected to participate in the study. The customers can provide their viewpoints in free form input on
the importance of different factors with sufficient guidance supplied to warrant constructive feedback
collection. This is to avoid bias in obtaining CRs. The variables addressed in the questionnaire are:
Good customer service (CR1).
Speed of service (CR2).
Facility Cleanliness (e.g., store, bathroom, parking lot) (CR3).
Perceived safe environment (e.g., well lit environment both inside and outside the store including the
parking lot) (CR4).
Offer promotion/discount (CR5).
Multiple payment options (e.g., cash, check, credit card) (CR6).
E commerce and online presence (e.g., publish business information and offer product/service through
a website or social media site) (CR7).

Automatic Stroooding
The aim of this experiment was to test how the automatic processing of reading interferes with the
controlled processing of naming a colour. The findings support the original previous research (Stroop,
1935) as a significant difference was found which indicates that when the controlled process of
naming a colour is not interfered with then it can be recognized faster whereas when the automatic
processes of reading words is involved then the time taken to name the colour is slower due to the
interference.
The results also support Teccee Happ, 1964, whose experiment used a different method of using
colour cards instead of non words but still helped to support their conclusions. They found that
participants responded faster with matching the colour with the colour cards as there was no automatic
process involved compared to the participants who had to match the colour ink of the word to the
colour card. This took the participants longer due to the interference of the automatic process of
reading which was what this experiment also found, further supporting the automatic process
interference theory.
The present research that was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They conducted an experiment where participants were shown either one letter of the word coloured
or the entire word coloured and asked to name the colour they saw. According to the automaticity
theory there would be interference in time taken to name the colours as the participant would
automatically read the word. However, it was found that the interference was heavily reduced in the
letter condition. They concluded that because the letter condition was an alternative mindset they were
able to ignore their typical mindset of reading the word. This leaves room for discussion on what
conditions would a person leave their typical mind set of reading a word to an alternative mindset

The Plaza was owned by the aggressive and ambitious Sohel Rana, who exploited his political
connections to acquire illegal permits and bribe government officials to get approval construction. He
had extra floors built without obtaining the proper permits or approval from the local government
authorities. Sohel Rana (like building owners in general) was able to take advantage of the loopholes
in the system through his ties to political allies and his wealth. Not only did he ensure that inspections
were rarely performed, but was also able to bribe officials to build on a rejected, unsuitable plot of
land, to add additional floors to the building, and to persuade workers to enter the building despite the
cracks and warnings from engineers. Also, he allegedly remarked to the media on the same day that
the cracks were a trivial matter. Rana Plaza was built after taking permission from the Savar Mayor
(who, like Rana was also an Awami League member) a person with no legal authority to issue this
permit. According to Emdadul Islam, chief engineer of the state run Capital Development Authority,
the owner of the building had permission for only a five storey building from the local municipality.
The illegal extension by a further three stories was overlooked by the authorities due to Rana s
political connections (affiliation with ruling Awami League party). Rana brought paid gang members

Judaism Religion
Judaism is a religion that goes back many centuries. The earliest know account of this religion dates
around 2000 B.C.E. This is the approximate time a man named Abraham made a covenant with God
that also extended to his descendants. It was not until the first century C.E. that classical Judaism
came into being. Until that time these people were called Israelites. Besides Abraham, the main
figures in Judaism are Isaac, Jacob and the prophet Moses. Still, followers of Judaism only believe in
one true god and do not worship anyone or anything else. They even avoid spelling the word God to
not risk disrespecting His name. Unlike other religions, much of Judaism is very general and open to
interpretation. Most of Jewish teaching focuses on relationships

Alexander the Second and the Title Tsar Liberator Essay
Alexander the Second and the Title Tsar Liberator
In the 19th Century, Russia had no zemstva, very little education, industry and railway building, a
biased judicial system and very few freed peasants. Czar Alexander II, who succeeded Nicolas I in
1855, went some ways to remedying these deficiencies through a series of reforms. Alexander II
became the great modernizer of Russia, walking a delicate line between preserving Russia s Slavic
identity and enabling its people to benefit from Western advancements. For this reason he was known
to some as the Czar Liberator . However, indeed he was a liberator in name only.
Alexander II initiated substantial reforms in education, the government, the ... Show more content on

For the educational reform, the Czar adopted a more liberal education. Censorship was relaxed, the
universities were given freedom and independence, and more Western ideas were introduced to
scholars and students. People were more open minded and became to demand more under these liberal
reforms.
Though Czar Alexander II returned to reactionary rule when an attempt was made to assassinate him
in the 1860s, he did turn once more to reform in 1880. He made plans to set up a General Commission
which would include representatives from the Zemstva. This would not be a parliament but would be a
consultative voice when the Czar required it. But this was an attempt towards a parliamentary
government.
Superficially, Czar Alexander II seemed to be so liberate from his series of reform. Yet,
notwithstanding these measures, it would be wrong, as is sometimes done, to describe Alexander II as
a liberal. He was in fact a firm upholder of autocratic principles, sincerely convinced both of his duty
to maintain the God given autocratic power he had inherited and of Russia s unreadiness for
constitutional or representative government.
For the emancipation of serfs, it was actually essential more than out of the Czar s willingness. The
bulk of the Russian population, about 80%, were the peasants and serfs. Alexander II recognised that
emancipation was vital. Freed

Absolutism Vs Individualism
This is a rich work: about the deterioration of western morality from its early heroic age to the present
barbarism; about the fragmentation and growing incoherence of ethical theory that accompanies the
deterioriation; about the shape that self and society have increasingly taken; and about the concepts
through which we can gain an understanding of the process. MacIntyre sees our moral crisis as the
consequence of the historical rejection of an Aristotelian moral scheme in which the role of the virtues
is dominant, reflecting a society of shared goods. It has been replaced progressively by a rank
individualism whose theory flowered in the Enlightenment s view of the atomic individual with his
private desires and objectives. Hence liberal

Charles Dickens Little Women
So many times, people have attempted to live up to the life of a fictional character. Sometimes this is
through books or movies or any other sort of story. The main character is often the one that people
most like to look up to. But quite often, this character is not someone who can ever be imitated.
Hundreds of years ago, authors recorded stories that centered around a central character who was too
good to be true, and often, perfect. Perfection, as humans well know, cannot ever be achieved. Some
during the time found this troubling. One such person was Louisa May Alcott. Growing up, she was a
tomboy with a short temper and unconventional attitudes toward society. The lifestyle of her family
greatly enhanced that different and non conformist personality that she possessed. Her personality can
be seen within the revolutionary character of Josephine Jo March in her classic novel, Little Women.
Background
Alcott s father, Amos Bronson Alcott, was an itinerant philosopher. He taught his daughters to learn all
they could and question everything. Like Emerson and Thoreau, Bronson Alcott belonged to a group
of idealistic thinkers called the New England Transcendentalists (Cary, 1993, p. 14). He was married
to a woman who had very strong feminist views for the time. The Transcendentalists were leaders in
the fight for women s rights and the abolition of slavery (p. 14). Abigail Alcott held the belief that a
female could do anything just as well as a male, if given the same

Influenza Pandemic Stockpile Essay
A lot of critical factors drive an influenza pandemic stockpiling. The costs for having influenza
pandemic stockpile of drugs is relatively lesser when equated with the amount of chaos and disaster it
will be created to humankind worldwide.
Some of the major factors are:
The records and prediction of the world health organization for the number of people that would be
infected by the pandemic in the near future.
The quantity of the rapid response stockpile which will be required to limit and treat the first people
that will be affected
The strategy plans under which the stockpile will be used, for preventive or therapeutic use, long term
and short term before spread.
The economic impact that will occur, due to disruption of normal business. ... Show more content on

As the number of the cases increase, the just in time supply chains or the standard operating
procedures would be really difficult to meet the growing demand. Hence the healthcare systems have
been challenged to determine the medical supplies that need to be procured. One of the most
challenging jobs is to develop a prioritized list detailing all the supplies and essential quantities that
need to be stockpiled.
Benefits of influenza pandemic stockpile are:
Uncertainty of the demand since we are uncertain of its occurrence, stockpiling the vaccines and drugs
is very important
Considering the development and the availability of the vaccines. The time frame required is more.
Hence, with the stockpile, they are readily available when needed
Logistics play a major role.
Stockpile replenishment can be easily done.
The costs involved in the influenza pandemic stockpile is very high. Since these Tamiflu vaccines are

Disadvantages Of Pilgrimages
Many pilgrimages test and enhance the faith of each believer, embarking on a once in a lifetime
journey enriched with spiritual fulfillment. Pilgrims commonly seek a specific place that is associated
with a divinity or other holy personage. One of many pilgrimages is the Hajj, located in Saudi Arabia.
It provides Muslims all around the world a sense of spiritual and psychological nourishment. While it
encourages social and cultural mixing, as well as interactions between them, each Muslim undertakes
the pilgrimage with a religious motive and faith, often enabling them to embrace cultural diversity
while seeking a spiritual cleansing of their souls and a fresh start. After the journey of the pilgrimage,
the believers bring back many religious and emotional experience that would affect them throughout
their daily life.
The Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam which occurs in the last month on the Islamic Calendar. The
Hajj is a five to six day journey that will challenge Muslims to take part in many celebrations,
sacrificial and spiritual practices, intended to bring about greater humility and unity among the
Muslim community. Giving them a chance to wipe clean their sins and start fresh (Batrawy, 2016).
The pilgrimage is in Mecca as the city is a significant place as the prophet Muhammad was born there.
The journey to Mecca to engage in the Hajj must be performed by every Muslim who is able to do so

New Start Reflection
This summer I had the opportunity to do New Start a program for incoming freshmen at the University
of Arizona. The program is to support the transition from high school to college and throughout the
program you gain knowledge and tips not only just about the college but about yourself. Using tools
from class activities like SWOT and True Colors that helped me really understand who I am and what
are my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Within this essay I will share with you my
SWOT analysis and the things I learned about myself during the last few weeks.
Strengths
Personal values I believe speak a great deal about a person and who they are and I learned that my
values reflect just that. During New Start we had an activity in class that forced us to pick from a list
of personal values and narrow them down and rank them in order of importance. My top values
included family, friends, school, and independence just to name a few. This activity was especially
challenging for me but in the end it helped me really look at what truly is important to me. I had to
apply this lesson from class in my life sooner than I expected. My grandmother passed away during
New Start and I had to decide if I wanted to miss school and be with family but that also meant by
missing school I d be missing out on important information. In the end I choose to go to school the
next day and be with my family afterwards. That decision alone was very hard because in a situation
such as mine there was a conflict of my personal values my family is very important to me but school
is just as important to me. Although it was difficult for me to make that decision but the fact I had the
ability to choose between two of my own personal values is why I ve chosen to place knowing and
understanding my personal values as a strength. I know that throughout life there will be times when I
will have to choose once again between my personal values and as student like I ve mentioned earlier
I m going to make those decisions based on what matters to me and what won t always be there in the
end.
Another strength I have is goal setting towards the end of high school coming into this summer my top
goal was to get a job. I ve tried my best to

Life on a Military Base
As we sat on the sea wall, I noticed the look of discomfort in Jackson s eyes. Ever since he had moved
from Fort Bragg to my hometown, we had been best friends. It was the summer of 7th grade and we
were preparing to go on a school sponsored fishing trip. As we stepped aboard the boat, Jackson
pulled me away from the other kids and in a hushed tone muttered, There s something I want to talk to
you about. It s my dad.
In that instant I knew. The mix of gravity and sorrow in his expression revealed everything. Jackson
explained that his father, a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army, had been ordered to relocate
to Germany for a new assignment. Like many of my friends from military families, Jackson would
move out of my life within weeks, swept away by the needs of the United States military.
Growing up near Macdill Air Force Base in Tampa, I met and befriended many children like Jackson
with military parents. To the average civilian, they were just normal kids from military families, but to
those familiar with military culture, they were more commonly known as military brats . Used as a
term of endearment and respect within the military community, military brat is defined by Mary
Edwards Wertsch, author of the book Military Brats: Legacies of Childhood Inside the Fortress, as the
children of a military parent or parents who have served full time in the United States armed forces.
The term extends to both former and current children of such parents, and is often

Analysis Of The Book Sensory Design
Vahid Farbod
Assignment 2 Journal Article Deconstruction
Malnar, Joy Monice and Frank Vodvarka. Sensory Design. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota
Press, 2004.
The book, Sensory Design published by Joy Monice Malnar and Frank Vodvarka in 2004, explores a
new multi sensory method of design for architects in 335 pages. The opening of the book starts with a
question What if we designed for all senses? Very similar to articles from Pallasmaa, the book leaves
the reader wanting to know more about this method although this book covered many topics and
included many references. Malnar is an associate professor at the University of Illinois, and Vodvarka
is an artist who wrote many articles on architectural history.
The book consists of twelve chapters that propose this idea that designers should explore the nature of
our senses response to the spatial built forms that people invest their time in. It tries to cover a specific
topic in each chapter that in order to deconstruct the book, it is necessary to cover each chapter
individually.
The opening chapter describes a sense of place through few examples. A place is perceived through
our sensory responses and cognitive memory which makes that space unique and special as a type.
The second chapter overlooks a series of art movements such as De Stijl, Bauhaus, Enlightenment,
CIAM, and the work of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This chapter attempts to find their
position on senses and the cultural memory. The authors

Online Learning And E Learning
Chapter 2: Literature Review {Insert Intro Text about Literature Review} 2.1 Online Learning Ever
since the computer evolution the way people learn has changed. Back in the day the major idea of
learning was limited to a physical classroom environment, but since the advent of computers and the
Internet that idea has since changed. Now it is possible to learn anywhere at anytime as long as one
has a computing device and Internet access. There is usually confusion between Online Learning and
E learning, as people tend to use the two interchangeably in some cases. E learning otherwise known
as Electronic Learning, is a term used to characterize a learning endeavor carried out on an electronic
device. E learning does not necessarily mean that the learning material is accessible online, it can also
come in different forms like an educational CD ROM commonly found at the back of some textbooks
or material than can only be accessed on a campus intranet. Online learning on the other hand is an
educational endeavor that can only be primarily accessed while on the Internet. Pop (2016) defined E
Learning as the appropriate use of ICT to enhance the learning and can thus take place on campus or
in any other context , while defining Online Learning as A term describing learning that takes place
online and thus requires connection to the Internet . In summary, Online Learning is a form of E
Learning that is done on the Internet. 2.2 Learning Web Development Over the last decade

Diversity Within The Workplace, Many People And Companies...
When looking at diversity in the workplace, many people and companies encourage it. Cultural
diversity has become a defining characteristic of an increasing number of societies ( Consequences of
Cultural diversity this should be the author and the date). They feel that it is a great thing to have
diversity in the workplace, however, what some companies do not think about is the negative effects
of having too much diversity in the workplace. A workforce that has significant differences in
ethnicity, race, religion, gender and other individual traits can produce negative effects, especially if
not well managed. These negative effects of diversity are understandable if the work culture does not

The real problem comes with the companies that are widely diverse because of the different
combinations of cultures that are being mixed. Also, another problem with diversity in the workplace
is time. Different cultures and societies view time differently, as how many hours employees are
expected to work in a day and how many are spent with family vary. Other cultures work long hours
in a day, but they also take a long lunch break as where others work for an average of eight hours a
day with an average lunch of thirty minutes. With all of the differences that cultures have, it can make
it difficult for a large corporation to be successful and effective, as well as efficient, when managing
the workplace.
The benefits of diversity in the hospitality business are numerous, however. Diversity can bring new
views and perspectives to the table to other workers that they may not have been exposed to it before.
It may not occur to a large group of, for example, middle class white people that there are better
solutions or plans for their workplace because they all might have relatively the same ideals and work
ethics. However, having diverse groups of people could bring those fresh ideas and problem solving to
these workers that may otherwise not occur to them. Especially different ethnicities might, ...offer

Ralph Stanley Research Paper
Dr. Ralph Edmond Stanley, a well known American Bluegrass artist, was born February 25, 1927, in
Big Spraddle Creek, Virginia. He just recently passed away last year on June 23, 2016. During those
89 years of life, Mr. Stanley sure made a name for himself to be remembered for many years after he
was gone. There were two things that made him stand out from many of the bluegrass artists. Those
things were his original voice and his unique way of picking the banjo. Mr. Stanleys mother bought
him his first banjo for five dollars when he was around 15 or 16. His mother taught him to play
clawhammer style on the banjo and later in life he developed his own style from this strumming style.
After graduation from high school in May of 1945, he went into the Army for about a year. The day he
came home from the war, Carter, his Brother, and his father picked him up and later that night he

After spending many hours just listening to the songs played I discovered many different styles,
melodies, harmonies, voices, and instruments. There were two songs in this album that were a trio that
consisted of Ralph Stanley, Vince Gill, and Patty Loveless. Something that I think sounded very well
was the harmony when they all sang the chorus of the song A Lonesome Night . The mix of Ralph
Stanley s high pitch unique voice, Vince Gills soft, smooth tone, and Patty Loveless honky tonk style
blended very well. Some other instruments besides the banjo were guitar, fiddle, and the mandolin. To
no surprise, all of these instruments are very prone to being involved in the bluegrass genre. From the

Metaphors, Forms Of Human Communication And Erapeutic Uses
Metaphors, forms of symbolic language, have been used as teaching and healing tools in stories for
centuries, cite Mills and Crowley (2014). PTUK course book (2017) also cites that research by Levin
and Modell has proven that more brain cells light up in response to metaphor than any other form of
human communication forming new neural pathways. In this essay I will be looking at the theory
behind using a therapeutic story and relating it to my process of using one with my client. Sunderland
(2000) states that stories can be an important part of therapeutic tool kit, as a vehicle, through which a
child can process troubled feelings. Sunderland (2000) adds that children can often find it difficult to
put their feelings into words, as their natural communication method is through images and
metaphors. A therapeutic story can express those feelings in child s language and help the child to
build trust that her feelings are understood, which then will help the child to share her own feelings.
Sunderland (2002) also advises that there are four ways a therapeutic story can work; It can present
the child options that she can use when coming across an obstacle, it can present new ways and
solutions of dealing with problems that might have felt unsolvable, it can show ways of coping with
emotional problems, and it can provide options for new ways of being. Ericson (1991) cites that the
therapist should encourage learning through experience, as this is more beneficial than learning

The Importance Of Gene Imprinting
Gene imprinting is an epigenetic phenomenon when two alleles of a certain gene are expressed at
different level depending on their parent of origin. Gene imprinting has been documented in mammals
and flowering plants. In the 1980s, biologists attention to imprinting has greatly increased due to the
recognition of its importance during mammalian development [1]. Imprinted genes regulate cell
growth, cell signaling, cell cycle regulation, and influence nutrient acquisition and fetus growth. In
mammals, many imprinted genes are found in the placenta and brain, which is consistent with growth
and neurodevelopmental defects observed in human imprinting disorders [2,3].
In addition to mammals, gene imprinting is also found in flowering plants. ... Show more content on

The angiosperms (flowering plants) are the most diverse group of land plants, with over 250,000
species [5]. Double fertilization is a unique feature distinguishing angiosperms from their seed plant
predecessors (gymnosperms). This feature might have provided angiosperms an evolutionary
advantage to become the dominant form of land plant life, although the selection force of this trait is
poorly understood.
Unlike animals that define all cell lineages during embryogenesis, plants are able to establish novel
cell fates throughout their entire life cycle, especially during sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction
in flowering plants comprises of a process divided into three phases: sporogenesis, gametogenesis and
embryo / endosperm genesis.
Sporogenesis is initiated in both male and female reproductive tissues. In ovule primordium, a
subepidermal nucellar cell differentiates into a megaspore mother cell (MMC), the MMC then
undergoes meiosis to form four haploid megaspores. Only one megaspore survives to become
functional megaspore (FM) and proceeds to gametogenesis, while the other three degenerate. In
stamen primordium, one subepidermal nucellar cell gives rise to a microspore or pollen mother cell
(PMC). The PMC then undergoes meiosis to form four haploid microspores which will continue to

Cesar Chavez Civil Rights Movement Summary
The Civil Rights Movement, led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., played a massive role in American
history and it did so not through a revolution of savagery, but one of peace. The right to peaceably
assemble for change has always been a staple in American society, defined as a right in the first
amendment to the Constitution, ensuring that everyone could protest and call for peaceful action
without being persecuted by the government. In 1978, Cesar Chavez wrote an article addressing the
usefulness of nonviolent resistance, especially referring to Dr. King s Civil Rights Movement. His
usage of juxtaposition, logical fallacies, and unifying diction assist in Chavez s attempt to drive the
point that nonviolent resistance is the greatest way to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So is the case for Cesar Chavez and the argument he develops in favor of peaceful protests. Case in
point: Chavez makes a rather blunt claim that If we resort to violence, he one of two things will
happen: either [it] will be escalated and there will be [losses] on both sides, or there will be total
demoralization of the workers (Chavez 17 21), assuming that these are the only two possible options
creates an either/or fallacy error, it is entirely possible that there are other options. Perhaps one side
will emerge entirely victorious over the other, there are an untold number of other options that could
be available. Chavez also utilizes appeals to pity to convince readers that his movement is morally
superior to that of standard groups pushing for change. This is evident when Chavez writes that he
believes that ...when poor people are faced with a direct appeal from the poor struggling nonviolently
against great odds, they will react positively (Chavez 27 30) and that [his movement] can gather the
support of millions who have a conscience... (Chavez 24 25). Chavez s usage of the phrase people
who have a conscience alone manipulates the logic of regular people by convincing them that if they
aren t a part of nonviolent resistance, then they have no conscience, which clearly is not the case as
people can choose to not involve themselves whatsoever and still have a clear moral compass in line
with that of a reasonable society. Chavez s bandwagoning claims that The American people and
people everywhere still yearn for peace (Chavez 30 31) so as to convince the audience that since so
many people already yearn for justice, that they should as well. Besides these fallacies, Chavez
utilizes one far more than any

Two Tests in the World of Psychology and Education
For the psychology and education world there are two tests, of many, that measure ability and
achievement for children who have been referred for a variety of academic and behavioral concerns.
These tests are known as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children Fourth Edition (WISC IV) and
the Woodcock Johnson III (WJ III). In the school system these children are referred and given one of
these or both tests by the school psychologist. By using these assessments teachers and school staff are
able to identify specific difficulties that these students are having and how to move on in the
observation process. The first test is the WISC IV, this test measures the students intellectual abilities.
The test is administered to children ages 6 to 16 and are given by paper and pencil or on the computer.
The components of the assessment include several subtests that can be both verbal and nonverbal.
Counting both verbal and nonverbal there are about fifteen different subtests that include, vocabulary,
comprehension, coding and letter number sequencing. Ten of these are the core subtests that are given
to every student while the other five are subjective to the specific student. Before this test is
administered the student should have gone through tier one and two of response to intervention (RTI)
in the general classroom as well as been seen by the schools psychologist. The student should have
already begun tier three of RTI and been brought up for referral to the education team.

The Most Important American Fiction Writer
Raymond Carver has been called the most important American fiction writer in the second half of the
twentieth century and the most influential American short story writer since Ernest Hemingway
(Kleepe vii). He was very successful despite his many difficult life experiences. Carver grew up
during a very difficult time in America. However, early on, Carver and his wife believed their hard
work would eventually pay off despite the challenges in the world around them. They thought it would
fix almost everything. However, throughout his life of dead end jobs and child rearing, Carver realized
that things weren t going to change and eventually wound up divorced. In many ways, Carver s life
was the model for all of his main characters. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The life of the blue collar worker became increasingly difficult. It has been said, Of the writers who
depicted the history of this blue collar despair, none did so fully and accurately as Raymond Carver
(Meyer 1). While growing up, his family was very poor. Raymond Carver was married with two
children before the age of twenty. Therefore, he worked many low paying jobs such as pumping gas,
sweeping hospital corridors, and managing an apartment complex in order to support his family.
Carver mainly used lower middle class characters in his stories because that is the type of person he
was most familiar with. When asked about having sympathy towards his characters, Carver said, In all
the books so far, I could never have been condescending to those characters and felt myself any sort of
writer at all. I have to care for the people in the stories. These are my people. I can t offend them, and I
wouldn t (Alton 9). Earl Ober, the main character in They re Not Your Husband, is an unemployed
salesman who uses his business strategies to convince his wife to go on a diet. The narrator and main
character of Raymnd Carver s story, Fat, is a waitress who serves people both at work and at home.

The Tensions between Line Mangers and Human Resources Practitioners in Modern Organisations
Human resources management is a business department and function that has the strategic approach to

With recruitment HR play a very active part in recruiting a new employee for a position within the
company. It is the responsibility of HR to carry out the administration for this. HR will organise
adverting the position, they will, prepare the job description and specification and contracts for the
position, according to Personnel Today Website (2001) A total of 30 per cent of respondents said their
HR departments always controlled temporary staff recruitment, 36 per cent revealed HR was mostly
responsible and 20 per cent said that their HR departments were never responsible for recruitment of
temporary staff. It is believed that HR take control of the recruitment process to save on costs and
make the process more efficient. When applicants have applied for the position HR will then shortlist
for the interviews. Here is where conflict may occur as line manager may feel that they are having
limited control over how employees are being recruited and their requirements from the employee are
not being met, this can subsequently result in a high staff turn over than can be cost more financially
to the business in the long term. However if a line manger and HR are to work closely together during
the recruitment process conflict can be reduced and the needs of the manager can be met the Personnel
Today Website (2001) adds It is not a question of cutting out the middle man it is more a question of
how the HR and line managers

AI Essay
As I was listening to Harris speech, I noticed that a lot of what he had to say matched my latest
thoughts about AI. Harris mentioned that the most worrisome thing about the development of AI at
this point is that people seem unable to arrange an appropriate response to the dangers that may come
from AI. I agree with Harris because I have noticed that when I have a conversation about AI with
someone, most people don t know much about it to gather and create an emotional response to it, and
the people that do know some information about AI seem to not really feel threatened by it. I think
that most people believe that AI is so far fetched and will probably never reach a level of intelligence

I agreed with a few things that Ronson shared in his speech, I agree that a lot of people on social
media have the mentality that when a powerful person misuses their privilege, they are prepared to
attack. It is like if people are trying to keep others in their place from doing what they consider to be
wrongful. I feel as if people like to attack others when they make a subtle mistake in organizing words
that best express their thought or in the case that Ronson focused on when someone doesn t
understand one s humor and decides to exploit them. But why? Well, my theory is that people like to
feel powerful and we also like to feel like we are doing something good for the vast majority.
However, how we decide to protect others seems kind of brutal. In social media, one has to be careful
with what one decides to share because it can be so easily be misinterpreted. A misinterpretation can
lead straight to online shaming. People with like views will begin to gather to protect the people that
they believe are being attacked in an inappropriate way. And the way people decide to protect others is
very mean. I don t think they really understand the power of what they have to say especially when a
huge group gathers with alike opinions. Ronson shared a case of a woman who decided to

Examples Of Compromise In The Lover s Dictionary
The Lovers Dictionary Compromise is an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by
each side making concessions or an ability to listen to two sides in a dispute, and devise an agreement
acceptable to both parties. Compromise is not only just an agreement to settle a dispute, it is also
unselfishly giving up something for another while respecting their personal boundaries. One can
assume that with relationships there will always be disagreements and non compromise. Therefore, no
matter how many low points a relationship gets to there is always the ability to compromise to solve
an issue. Throughout The Lover s Dictionary there are many examples of compromise, but also many
examples of disagreements are exemplified between the couple depicted in the story. The narrator

It is unclear as to how the cover up was perpetrated. The day to day processing of documents would
likely have been completed by lower ranking employees, who may or may not have been aware of the
situation. At times, lower level employees choose to do what is asked, even if they feel that something
is wrong. They point the blame for why a certain procedure was followed on their supervisors as they
fear they will lose their job. It is management s responsibility to set the tone of ethical behavior within
the company. Mr. Lee s and Mr. Boyne s lack of integrity and honesty could have filtered down to the

Power to the people? web 2.0, Facebook ,and DIY cultural citizenship in Aotearoa New Zealand is to
fuel a more informed and critically diverse debate on the values of web 2.0 as so far most of the
conversation on this topic has been children s safety on the internet .The target audience is fairly wide
however given that the article is from MediaNZ it is safe to assume that the principle demographic this
is aimed toward Media Studies students ,and teachers. Goodwin uses a range of strategies to fuel the
broader discussion on the values of web 2.0: Repeated words with the purpose of accustoming the
audience to the words, Target audience as a strategy with the purpose to gain a more informed and
critical discussion and structural placement with the purpose of highlighting the global and local
importance of web 2.0. The title is significant in revealing the authors intentions to make the article a
debate rather than something with a correct ,or incorrect answer. The question mark is interesting
because it is the first thing that the reader sees ,and it begins make them question what they already
know and don t know about this topic. It is already making them analyse where they stand on this
issue ,and why. I tend to think that making the given audience already think before they

Reflection On African American History
Over the course of this semester, I was introduced to many people, ideas, writings, and discussions
that sparked my interest and enlightened me on African American history. However, I feel like this
was just the beginning of my journey of learning the history of my people, as there is still so much out
there to be brought to the surface. Prior to taking this course, I was always ignorant on the topic of
African American history and simply made the connection to slavery. Additionally, I was unaware of
other black activist, movements, and struggles that I had the chance to witness for the first time in this
class. I came to a realization of how deprived of this information I was, because other historic events
have been deemed more important. A quote that stuck with me throughout the course that was made
by Arthur Schomburg was, ... African history and negro history, are the missing pages of world history
. At the start of this semester we discuss an issue that has poisoned the dynamic of society in the
United States since the beginning, white supremacy. For centuries, members of the white community
have simply used the color of their skin to attain and remain in power. In my opinion, those that use
their white privilege to partake in white supremacy are the only ones who benefit from this poison.
White supremacy continues to be fueled in the United States, and plays just as big of a factor in today
s world as it did many years ago. There is no retaliation for uproars or

The Development Of Rock And Pop Music Festivals
There has been a constant rise in the division of outdoor music festivals over the past 10 years with
about 71 per cent rise between 2003 and 2007 (Anderton 2009, pp.39 40). Mintel reports that there has
been a persistent extension in the live music spectators stimulated by an evolution of supply sector in
terms of greater number of events, sites and innovation over the past decade. These are accompanied
by a large number of boutique festivals which are designed to meet specific consumer demands and
excellency in customer experience. Even though new events have been organised, there are a part of
them which were called off over the 3 year span from 2003 to 2006 due to various factors like
weather, sales and marketing sector, licencing and finances, altering policies, security and absence of
sponsorships (Getz, 2002; Anderton, 2009).
The development on rock and pop music festivals emerged in the late 1960s from the open air
festivals in the late 1960s and early 1960s which hence, gave birth to the National Jazz Federation in
1961. The late 1960s saw an evolution of underground or hippie counterculture which was propped up
commercially by the booming fashion business and by an international student and youth movement
which provided a ready audience ( Clarke, 1982, p.25). Dressing up, however became an essential
aspect of the music festivals as it attracted greater audience over the years. By the end of 1960s, the
outdoor festivals had been on an uprise where the US Woodstock

  • 2. The Physical Aspects of the Mpenjati Estuary System A study on the physical aspects of the Mpenjati estuary beach system. Roxanne Munsamy University Of KwaZulu Natal Abstract A study was conducted at the Mpenjati estuary on the 4th of August 2012 to determine the physical aspects within the estuary beach system. This paper gives an overview of the factors affecting the slope of the estuary, sediment sizes and the tidal prisms. The beach slope was measured using the Emery board method and it was found to be characteristic of the KwaZulu Natal coastline. Wave energy and sediment transport rates along the beach morphology are interlinked, high energy storms tend to erode and flatten beaches whilst lower energy waves tend to be responsible for the reverse process rebuilding breaches. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main aim of this study conducted on the Mpenjati estuary was to determine the effects of the beach processes on temporarily open/closed estuaries, in particular wave action as well as the transportation of sediment and to understand the influence that they may have on the state of the estuary mouth. The objective of the study was to determine the elevation of the beach profile or slope and grain size by using the Emery Board method as well as to analyze the natural stream flow into the estuary using flow duration analysis with relation to mouth dynamics. Materials and methods. The Mpenjati estuary is a temporarily open/closed estuary which is located approximately 165km Southwest of Durban. The river mouth is generally closed during the winter months and is enclosed by a sand bar separating the saline rich ocean water from the fresh water river. On field, the time as well as tide was noted down. The equipment needed was two measuring poles/sticks with measurements in centimetres written on and a two meter length of rope. The Emery board method was used and all procedures were followed accordingly. Each group consisted of 20 members and was then subdivided again into groups of ten. Students took a turn to be a seaward surveyor and a landward surveyor, a data researcher and a geotechnical engineer. The respective measurements were taken starting from the baseline as well as the cross shore data points. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Yonec And Bisclavret By Marie De France Marie de France uses Yonec and Bisclavret to express the animal/human boundary in the medieval period. In Bisclavret, Marie used the werewolf to show how animals lack reason. In Yonec, Marie uses the hawk man to show how animal natures are correlated with the lower passions. Also in the medieval period animals were thought to not have souls. The soul is defined as a person s moral or emotional nature or sense of identity. This point is interesting because the body encapsulates the soul, in a way that it hides your true identity, whether you are a human or a human who changes into an animal. When Bisclavret and the knight changed their physical natures, they did not suddenly lack a soul but their soul was preserved. The body just acts as a vessel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She does this to add a dramatic element to the stories. In our minds, we subconsciously create positive connotations to anything we deem as beautiful or good looking. But when she develops the characters person more indeptly she reveals their negative attributes. As readers, we are caught off guard because a person s looks are a kind of perceived identity. For instance, Bisclavret was described as a handsome knight, but later it is revealed that he is a werewolf and for three days out the week he lives in the deepest part of the woods and feeds off anything he can capture. Also, his wife is initially described as worthy and attractive in appearance. However, although she doesn t transform into an animal she has a beastly side that is later revealed in the Lais. Her inner beast is revealed when she betrays her husband, the fear she has of her husbands condition is understandable but she fails to come to terms with it. Instead she sells her body to a knight and convinces him to steal her husband s clothes, knowing that would entrap him in his werewolf form. He would in turn receive her hand in married as payment. By accepting her proposal, he allowed his beastly side to get the best of him and condemning Bisclavret to remain naked in his beast like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Bluest Eye Controversy In the novel The Bluest Eye written by Toni Morrison, the author details the tragic story of a young African American girl named Pecola Breedlove, who is exposed to bias social constructs that results in her internalizing high levels of racist ideologies. The novel illustrates the controversy of the perpetration of Eurocentric beauty standards and how it affects the black community, specifically the children within it. Pecola is surrounded around the notion that white standards are favored within American society. She vividly sees these implementations in aspects such as pop culture, the racial hierarchy in education, and societal systematic order. These bias limitations subconsciously result in detrimental effects on the psyches of the young ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Morrison argues that the definition of whiteness and American identity is a construction made in opposition to that of an Africanist presence in literature. Morrison states that the American identity is based on ideals that can only be applied to whites. Furthermore, she goes on to detail that African Americans cannot identify with the American ideal of freedom as the result of being brought to the country as slaves According to Morrison, because has been clearly the preserve of white male views, genius, and power, those views, genius, and the power are without relationship to and removed from the overwhelming presence of black people in the United States (Morrison 5). Through the use of language and style within literature there are clear determinates to help the reader establish which characters identifies with what race within the composition. House, 541 F.3d 36 (1st Cir. 2008). The expert s testimony in First Marblehead was relevant because the expert witness s professional background as a certified public accountant, with degrees in economics and financial advisement, would assist the trier of fact with understanding the financial complexities in the case from a practitioner s position. SMEs may not immediately have knowledge or action plans to meet the customer demands, but the requirements need to be documented in the same way that it was delivered by the customers. After which the CRs can be organized hierarchically with no limit on the number of the hierarchical levels [3]. The customers are categorized as internal customers (e.g., stakeholders, managers, employees) and external customers (e.g., individuals who use SMEs products or services). Ten customers can be selected to participate in the study. The customers can provide their viewpoints in free form input on the importance of different factors with sufficient guidance supplied to warrant constructive feedback collection. • 7. Automatic Stroooding The aim of this experiment was to test how the automatic processing of reading interferes with the controlled processing of naming a colour. The findings support the original previous research (Stroop, 1935) as a significant difference was found which indicates that when the controlled process of naming a colour is not interfered with then it can be recognized faster whereas when the automatic processes of reading words is involved then the time taken to name the colour is slower due to the interference. The results also support Teccee Happ, 1964, whose experiment used a different method of using colour cards instead of non words but still helped to support their conclusions. They found that participants responded faster with matching the colour with the colour cards as there was no automatic process involved compared to the participants who had to match the colour ink of the word to the colour card. This took the participants longer due to the interference of the automatic process of reading which was what this experiment also found, further supporting the automatic process interference theory. According to the automaticity theory there would be interference in time taken to name the colours as the participant would automatically read the word. However, it was found that the interference was heavily reduced in the letter condition. They concluded that because the letter condition was an alternative mindset they were able to ignore their typical mindset of reading the word. The Plaza was owned by the aggressive and ambitious Sohel Rana, who exploited his political connections to acquire illegal permits and bribe government officials to get approval construction. He had extra floors built without obtaining the proper permits or approval from the local government authorities. Sohel Rana (like building owners in general) was able to take advantage of the loopholes in the system through his ties to political allies and his wealth. Not only did he ensure that inspections were rarely performed, but was also able to bribe officials to build on a rejected, unsuitable plot of land, to add additional floors to the building, and to persuade workers to enter the building despite the cracks and warnings from engineers. Also, he allegedly remarked to the media on the same day that the cracks were a trivial matter. Rana Plaza was built after taking permission from the Savar Mayor (who, like Rana was also an Awami League member) a person with no legal authority to issue this permit. According to Emdadul Islam, chief engineer of the state run Capital Development Authority, the owner of the building had permission for only a five storey building from the local municipality. The illegal extension by a further three stories was overlooked by the authorities due to Rana s political connections (affiliation with ruling Awami League party). This is the approximate time a man named Abraham made a covenant with God that also extended to his descendants. It was not until the first century C.E. that classical Judaism came into being. Until that time these people were called Israelites. Besides Abraham, the main figures in Judaism are Isaac, Jacob and the prophet Moses. Still, followers of Judaism only believe in one true god and do not worship anyone or anything else. They even avoid spelling the word God to not risk disrespecting His name. • 10. Alexander the Second and the Title Tsar Liberator Essay Alexander the Second and the Title Tsar Liberator In the 19th Century, Russia had no zemstva, very little education, industry and railway building, a biased judicial system and very few freed peasants. Czar Alexander II, who succeeded Nicolas I in 1855, went some ways to remedying these deficiencies through a series of reforms. Alexander II became the great modernizer of Russia, walking a delicate line between preserving Russia s Slavic identity and enabling its people to benefit from Western advancements. For this reason he was known to some as the Czar Liberator . However, indeed he was a liberator in name only. Alexander II initiated substantial reforms in education, the government, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For the educational reform, the Czar adopted a more liberal education. Censorship was relaxed, the universities were given freedom and independence, and more Western ideas were introduced to scholars and students. People were more open minded and became to demand more under these liberal reforms. Though Czar Alexander II returned to reactionary rule when an attempt was made to assassinate him in the 1860s, he did turn once more to reform in 1880. He made plans to set up a General Commission which would include representatives from the Zemstva. This would not be a parliament but would be a consultative voice when the Czar required it. But this was an attempt towards a parliamentary government. Superficially, Czar Alexander II seemed to be so liberate from his series of reform. Yet, notwithstanding these measures, it would be wrong, as is sometimes done, to describe Alexander II as a liberal. He was in fact a firm upholder of autocratic principles, sincerely convinced both of his duty to maintain the God given autocratic power he had inherited and of Russia s unreadiness for constitutional or representative government. For the emancipation of serfs, it was actually essential more than out of the Czar s willingness. The bulk of the Russian population, about 80%, were the peasants and serfs. Alexander II recognised that emancipation was vital. Freed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Absolutism Vs Individualism This is a rich work: about the deterioration of western morality from its early heroic age to the present barbarism; about the fragmentation and growing incoherence of ethical theory that accompanies the deterioriation; about the shape that self and society have increasingly taken; and about the concepts through which we can gain an understanding of the process. MacIntyre sees our moral crisis as the consequence of the historical rejection of an Aristotelian moral scheme in which the role of the virtues is dominant, reflecting a society of shared goods. It has been replaced progressively by a rank individualism whose theory flowered in the Enlightenment s view of the atomic individual with his private desires and objectives. Hence liberal ... • 12. Charles Dickens Little Women So many times, people have attempted to live up to the life of a fictional character. Sometimes this is through books or movies or any other sort of story. The main character is often the one that people most like to look up to. But quite often, this character is not someone who can ever be imitated. Hundreds of years ago, authors recorded stories that centered around a central character who was too good to be true, and often, perfect. Perfection, as humans well know, cannot ever be achieved. Some during the time found this troubling. One such person was Louisa May Alcott. Growing up, she was a tomboy with a short temper and unconventional attitudes toward society. The lifestyle of her family greatly enhanced that different and non conformist personality that she possessed. Her personality can be seen within the revolutionary character of Josephine Jo March in her classic novel, Little Women. Background Alcott s father, Amos Bronson Alcott, was an itinerant philosopher. He taught his daughters to learn all they could and question everything. Like Emerson and Thoreau, Bronson Alcott belonged to a group of idealistic thinkers called the New England Transcendentalists (Cary, 1993, p. 14). He was married to a woman who had very strong feminist views for the time. The Transcendentalists were leaders in the fight for women s rights and the abolition of slavery (p. 14). • 15. New Start Reflection This summer I had the opportunity to do New Start a program for incoming freshmen at the University of Arizona. The program is to support the transition from high school to college and throughout the program you gain knowledge and tips not only just about the college but about yourself. Using tools from class activities like SWOT and True Colors that helped me really understand who I am and what are my strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Within this essay I will share with you my SWOT analysis and the things I learned about myself during the last few weeks. Strengths Personal values I believe speak a great deal about a person and who they are and I learned that my values reflect just that. During New Start we had an activity in class that forced us to pick from a list of personal values and narrow them down and rank them in order of importance. My top values included family, friends, school, and independence just to name a few. This activity was especially challenging for me but in the end it helped me really look at what truly is important to me. I had to apply this lesson from class in my life sooner than I expected. My grandmother passed away during New Start and I had to decide if I wanted to miss school and be with family but that also meant by missing school I d be missing out on important information. In the end I choose to go to school the next day and be with my family afterwards. That decision alone was very hard because in a situation such as mine there was a conflict of my personal values my family is very important to me but school is just as important to me. Although it was difficult for me to make that decision but the fact I had the ability to choose between two of my own personal values is why I ve chosen to place knowing and understanding my personal values as a strength. I know that throughout life there will be times when I will have to choose once again between my personal values and as student like I ve mentioned earlier I m going to make those decisions based on what matters to me and what won t always be there in the end. Another strength I have is goal setting towards the end of high school coming into this summer my top goal was to get a job. I ve tried my best to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was the summer of 7th grade and we were preparing to go on a school sponsored fishing trip. As we stepped aboard the boat, Jackson pulled me away from the other kids and in a hushed tone muttered, There s something I want to talk to you about. It s my dad. In that instant I knew. The mix of gravity and sorrow in his expression revealed everything. Jackson explained that his father, a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army, had been ordered to relocate to Germany for a new assignment. Like many of my friends from military families, Jackson would move out of my life within weeks, swept away by the needs of the United States military. Growing up near Macdill Air Force Base in Tampa, I met and befriended many children like Jackson with military parents. To the average civilian, they were just normal kids from military families, but to those familiar with military culture, they were more commonly known as military brats . Used as a term of endearment and respect within the military community, military brat is defined by Mary Edwards Wertsch, author of the book Military Brats: Legacies of Childhood Inside the Fortress, as the children of a military parent or parents who have served full time in the United States armed forces. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2004. The book, Sensory Design published by Joy Monice Malnar and Frank Vodvarka in 2004, explores a new multi sensory method of design for architects in 335 pages. The opening of the book starts with a question What if we designed for all senses? Very similar to articles from Pallasmaa, the book leaves the reader wanting to know more about this method although this book covered many topics and included many references. Malnar is an associate professor at the University of Illinois, and Vodvarka is an artist who wrote many articles on architectural history. The book consists of twelve chapters that propose this idea that designers should explore the nature of our senses response to the spatial built forms that people invest their time in. It tries to cover a specific topic in each chapter that in order to deconstruct the book, it is necessary to cover each chapter individually. The opening chapter describes a sense of place through few examples. A place is perceived through our sensory responses and cognitive memory which makes that space unique and special as a type. The second chapter overlooks a series of art movements such as De Stijl, Bauhaus, Enlightenment, CIAM, and the work of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. This chapter attempts to find their position on senses and the cultural memory. The authors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Online Learning And E Learning Chapter 2: Literature Review {Insert Intro Text about Literature Review} 2.1 Online Learning Ever since the computer evolution the way people learn has changed. Back in the day the major idea of learning was limited to a physical classroom environment, but since the advent of computers and the Internet that idea has since changed. Now it is possible to learn anywhere at anytime as long as one has a computing device and Internet access. There is usually confusion between Online Learning and E learning, as people tend to use the two interchangeably in some cases. E learning otherwise known as Electronic Learning, is a term used to characterize a learning endeavor carried out on an electronic device. E learning does not necessarily mean that the learning material is accessible online, it can also come in different forms like an educational CD ROM commonly found at the back of some textbooks or material than can only be accessed on a campus intranet. Online learning on the other hand is an educational endeavor that can only be primarily accessed while on the Internet. Pop (2016) defined E Learning as the appropriate use of ICT to enhance the learning and can thus take place on campus or in any other context , while defining Online Learning as A term describing learning that takes place online and thus requires connection to the Internet . The real problem comes with the companies that are widely diverse because of the different combinations of cultures that are being mixed. Also, another problem with diversity in the workplace is time. Different cultures and societies view time differently, as how many hours employees are expected to work in a day and how many are spent with family vary. Other cultures work long hours in a day, but they also take a long lunch break as where others work for an average of eight hours a day with an average lunch of thirty minutes. With all of the differences that cultures have, it can make it difficult for a large corporation to be successful and effective, as well as efficient, when managing the workplace. There were two things that made him stand out from many of the bluegrass artists. Those things were his original voice and his unique way of picking the banjo. Mr. Stanleys mother bought him his first banjo for five dollars when he was around 15 or 16. His mother taught him to play clawhammer style on the banjo and later in life he developed his own style from this strumming style. Metaphors, Forms Of Human Communication And Erapeutic Uses Metaphors, forms of symbolic language, have been used as teaching and healing tools in stories for centuries, cite Mills and Crowley (2014). PTUK course book (2017) also cites that research by Levin and Modell has proven that more brain cells light up in response to metaphor than any other form of human communication forming new neural pathways. In this essay I will be looking at the theory behind using a therapeutic story and relating it to my process of using one with my client. Sunderland (2000) states that stories can be an important part of therapeutic tool kit, as a vehicle, through which a child can process troubled feelings. Sunderland (2000) adds that children can often find it difficult to put their feelings into words, as their natural communication method is through images and metaphors. A therapeutic story can express those feelings in child s language and help the child to build trust that her feelings are understood, which then will help the child to share her own feelings. Sunderland (2002) also advises that there are four ways a therapeutic story can work; It can present the child options that she can use when coming across an obstacle, it can present new ways and solutions of dealing with problems that might have felt unsolvable, it can show ways of coping with emotional problems, and it can provide options for new ways of being. Gene imprinting has been documented in mammals and flowering plants. In the 1980s, biologists attention to imprinting has greatly increased due to the recognition of its importance during mammalian development [1]. Imprinted genes regulate cell growth, cell signaling, cell cycle regulation, and influence nutrient acquisition and fetus growth. In mammals, many imprinted genes are found in the placenta and brain, which is consistent with growth and neurodevelopmental defects observed in human imprinting disorders [2,3]. Please ensure that either British or American English is used consistently in your chapter. The angiosperms (flowering plants) are the most diverse group of land plants, with over 250,000 species [5]. Double fertilization is a unique feature distinguishing angiosperms from their seed plant predecessors (gymnosperms). This feature might have provided angiosperms an evolutionary advantage to become the dominant form of land plant life, although the selection force of this trait is poorly understood. Unlike animals that define all cell lineages during embryogenesis, plants are able to establish novel cell fates throughout their entire life cycle, especially during sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction in flowering plants comprises of a process divided into three phases: sporogenesis, gametogenesis and embryo / endosperm genesis. Sporogenesis is initiated in both male and female reproductive tissues. In ovule primordium, a subepidermal nucellar cell differentiates into a megaspore mother cell (MMC), the MMC then undergoes meiosis to form four haploid megaspores. Only one megaspore survives to become functional megaspore (FM) and proceeds to gametogenesis, while the other three degenerate. Perhaps one side will emerge entirely victorious over the other, there are an untold number of other options that could be available. Chavez also utilizes appeals to pity to convince readers that his movement is morally superior to that of standard groups pushing for change. Chavez s usage of the phrase people who have a conscience alone manipulates the logic of regular people by convincing them that if they aren t a part of nonviolent resistance, then they have no conscience, which clearly is not the case as people can choose to not involve themselves whatsoever and still have a clear moral compass in line with that of a reasonable society. • 33. Reflection On African American History Over the course of this semester, I was introduced to many people, ideas, writings, and discussions that sparked my interest and enlightened me on African American history. However, I feel like this was just the beginning of my journey of learning the history of my people, as there is still so much out there to be brought to the surface. Prior to taking this course, I was always ignorant on the topic of African American history and simply made the connection to slavery. Additionally, I was unaware of other black activist, movements, and struggles that I had the chance to witness for the first time in this class. I came to a realization of how deprived of this information I was, because other historic events have been deemed more important. A quote that stuck with me throughout the course that was made by Arthur Schomburg was, ... African history and negro history, are the missing pages of world history . At the start of this semester we discuss an issue that has poisoned the dynamic of society in the United States since the beginning, white supremacy. For centuries, members of the white community have simply used the color of their skin to attain and remain in power. In my opinion, those that use their white privilege to partake in white supremacy are the only ones who benefit from this poison. White supremacy continues to be fueled in the United States, and plays just as big of a factor in today s world as it did many years ago. There is no retaliation for uproars or ... • 35. The Development Of Rock And Pop Music Festivals There has been a constant rise in the division of outdoor music festivals over the past 10 years with about 71 per cent rise between 2003 and 2007 (Anderton 2009, pp.39 40). Mintel reports that there has been a persistent extension in the live music spectators stimulated by an evolution of supply sector in terms of greater number of events, sites and innovation over the past decade. These are accompanied by a large number of boutique festivals which are designed to meet specific consumer demands and excellency in customer experience. Even though new events have been organised, there are a part of them which were called off over the 3 year span from 2003 to 2006 due to various factors like weather, sales and marketing sector, licencing and finances, altering policies, security and absence of sponsorships (Getz, 2002; Anderton, 2009). The development on rock and pop music festivals emerged in the late 1960s from the open air festivals in the late 1960s and early 1960s which hence, gave birth to the National Jazz Federation in 1961. The late 1960s saw an evolution of underground or hippie counterculture which was propped up commercially by the booming fashion business and by an international student and youth movement which provided a ready audience ( Clarke, 1982, p.25). Dressing up, however became an essential aspect of the music festivals as it attracted greater audience over the years. By the end of 1960s, the outdoor festivals had been on an uprise where the US Woodstock ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
