Essay On Lingua Franca
This paper looks at the aspects of a lingua franca and its role in societies. Also, the adaptation of other
languages vocabulary and usage into the English language, and how English has impacted vocabulary
and grammar structures on other languages. Furthermore, it talks about the effects on minority
languages due to the continuous spread and dominance of English. Later, it touches upon some
positive aspects that it has brought into modern day life across the globe.
English as a Lingua Franca
Over centuries, the English language has evolved from the roots of other ancient languages including:
Latin, the Germanic languages, French, even Greek. Their influences are clear to see in its vocabulary
and spoken dialects, which have also adopted words into its lexicon. Most of the aforementioned have
their complexities, causing difficulties for students and scholars to learn as second languages.
However, English is a much simpler language to comprehend due to its limited inflections and
familiarity of spoken and written words. Thus, it has become the lingua franca for people around the
world and is taught in the classrooms of most non native speaking countries. As we can see in most
areas of international business and education, the dominance of English is growing at a rapid pace that

The continual spread and reach of the language brings cause for concern for those who feel that the
impact it has on culture, history and traditions of minorities due to its tendency to dominate all aspects
of societies if allowed. However, the usage of the native English language has not gone unaffected due
to cross dialect influences and the need to accommodate others by using non conventional structures.
The positive aspects are too many to mention, especially in the modern times of globalization and I
believe that the case for English as a lingua franca may always be

How Does Lady Macbeth Affect The Jacobean
Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous,
likely to cause pain, or a threat. Fear itself is terrifying, it leaves one feeling helpless; like they are left
with only one or no options. The rise of Hitler and the Holocaust rampaged because due to fear of a
Jewish Bolshevik conspiracy to take over the world. Fear has left the land of immigrants, the United
States of America, feeling as it need to put up tall walls. Fear makes people feel like they need to do
the most irrational things. Just as fear caused the death of millions during the Holocaust, it killed
hundreds around the world during the different periods of witch trials. During the monarchy led by
King James 1 England suffered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She is, and forever will be one of the most dominant female figures in literature. She depicts intensity,
moxie, ambition, and ruthlessness throughout the start of the play. Lady Macbeth is the epitome of
what King James I feared in women. King James feared women like Lady Macbeth because her power
came from within herself. She understood that she could achieve anything with or without anyone by
her side. He feared women who threatened the natural order, showed aggressive tendencies, and were
capable of being independent (Smith). Shakespeare used Lady Macbeth as a subtle imitation for the
historical women King James persecuted (Moir). The Weird Sisters used methods like image magic on
the world around them to injure. While others in Shakespeare s England were executed for witchcraft
that never engaged in any practices associated with witchcraft or magic at all (Smith). Lady Macbeth
did not need magic to persuade Macbeth to kill the king, she did that all herself. Her power hungry
self goes on to say, Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be/ What thou art promised. Yet do I fear
thy nature;/ It is too full o th milk of human kindness To catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be
great,/ Art not without ambition, but without/ The illness should attend it. (Shakespeare 1.5 15 20). In
the quote above she is explaining how even though her husband does not have the guts to kill Duncan,
he will be able to because he has her. Shakespeare understood that the women of the Jacobean era
were harassed because of their strength and tenacity, and uses Lady Macbeth s actions at the beginning
of the play to represent

Terri Mulcahey Leadership
Terri Mulcahey is one of Northwood University s 2016 Distinguished Women honored for her
leadership in her workplace and community. She currently works as Penske Automotive Group s
Executive Vice President, Marketing and Business Development after 20 years working as Reynolds
and Reynolds Company (Penske Automotive Group, Inc.). Ms. Mulcahey attended Northwood
University after receiving a scholarship and with family history in the auto industry she had a desire to
continue the legacy. She did just that as her first job was a customer training consultant for Reynolds

As I look forward to graduation in the spring, I prepare myself for the great challenges I may
encounter while envisioning a future executive position that allows me to make a difference in my
industry. Mulcahey has taught me how important it is to be a fair and honest leader; if I can take time
off for family events then my employees should have the same opportunity. Similar to Mulcahey, I
grew up in a family invested in the automotive industry however unlike the experience she is giving
her son my parents were hardly around and I wouldn t change my experience because it has made me
who I am. However, I hope to provide an opposite experience for my children demonstrating that
proper leadership overflows into all aspects of one s life. Looking to the future, I find great interest in
her involvement in Penske s mentor program as I believe that the best way to learn about an
organization s culture and operations is through an employee who has been with the company. Ms.
Mulcahey explained how important this program is to her because when she began working for
Reynolds and Reynolds as a college graduate she happened to be paired with the President and CEO
of the company (Harris). While this was intimidating for her at first she quickly grew to see the
benefits she was reaping from meeting with her mentor once a week and has now brought

Educationally wise our community, life experiences and past professor s we have come in contact with
have played a significant role in our development as doctoral students we are becoming today. As we
being to reflect on what we read we will begin the process of higher level thinking. The sole purpose
of this paper is to examine, compare, and synthesize themes of three empirical articles. The three
articles compared were as follows: article one by Weidman, Stein (2003) titled Socialization of
doctoral students to the academic norms was a study. Article two by Baker Lattuca (2010) titled
Developmental networks and learning toward an interdisciplinary perspective on identity development
looked at the bond between theories. Article three Visser, Visser Schlosser (2003) titled Critical
thinking distance education and traditional education acknowledged the benefits by relating both
educational settings. In comparison to all three articles were written with a different purpose in mind,
with all three connecting to the same theme, How does faculty play a role in the development of the
doctoral student? There were similarities found in the subject addressed. However, it was also
apparent that there were differences in each article.

What Is The Kirishima Thing Essay
There was a big sensation in Japan when a writer Suzuki Shou published his book School caste in
2012 describing school students hierarchical relationship, dividing them depend on popularity in class.
In his book, he reports that this system operates to all students and decides their status in class. This
neologism spread throughout Japan, driving media to produce plenty of pieces reflecting it. The
Kirishima Thing, directed by Daihachi Yoshida is also about school caste system in modern Japan
society. Unlike other classroom dramas focusing on the most popular guy Kirishima in this movie, this
movie spotlights the bystanders of Kirishima by not showing him at all. Through non linear narrative
with lots of crosscutting editing, this movie shows the protagonist Hiroki s growing up from Kirishima
s subordinated person to a central person of his own life. At first, the parts that crosscutting editing is
used are mainly two, in the beginning, and climax scenes. The story starts ... Show more content on

baseball club. It denotes his inner conflict about future completely resolved and he will not be tied
down by the school hierarchy system.
In conclusion, The Kirishima Thing is basically about Hiroki s growing up, but it also points out the
importance of confronting myself. By illustrating the movie club members and the captain of the

Impact Of Corporate Social Responsibility On A Company s...
To what extent is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) beneficial to a company s performance?
Sub prompt: Evaluate how CSR can be beneficial to company s financial performance.
1. Introduction Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become more influential when making
company s decisions. 53% of the S P, an index based on market capitalizations of 500 U.S. companies,
has published CSR reports in 2012 as compared to 19% in 2011. An approach, suggested by Business
for Social Responsibility, considers CSR as attaining commercial success through respecting people,
community and the natural environment. McWilliams Siegel (2011) added that CSR are actions that

Section three comments the limitations of empirical findings and CSR.
2. Impacts on Financial Performance
2.1 Cost Companies committed to CSR are expected to reduce operating costs. One of the key areas in
CSR practices is paying attention to environmental issues such as energy saving and avoidance of
excessive use of inputs. The promotion of resource efficiency including using less energy and water
lower the utility costs. Nonetheless, a reduction in the use of packaging materials helps to reduce
production cost.
Brand equity has been viewed as the most crucial intangible assets of the company. Cornell and
Shapiro (1987) suggested that the firms are able to establish reputation capital if they adopt CSR
measures. Customers are more willing to spend on products that are produced by companies with
good brand images. An adverse example has illustrated the importance of brand image with the
scandal of Primark, a well known fast fashion clothing chains. The clothing retailer is found to break
its code of conducts and employ illegal workers in poor working conditions. When BBC revealed the
dishonored behavior, it cost Primark millions of dollars in information and advertising campaigns to
restore consumer loyalty. It implies that a socially responsible firm that follows CSR practices can
have less risk of negative rare events and thus avoid unnecessary cost.
2.2 Revenue A numerous empirical findings have revealed a positive correlation between

The Homelessness Problem Of Homelessness
Homelessness has been an sociological issue for a very long time now. It seems to be a rising issue all
over the country. Here in the Portland, Oregon area, we are very lucky. This is a wonderful place to
live. Socially, we accept everyone no matter what you look like or believe in. Our mantra is Keep
Portland Weird. Honestly, from a sociological standpoint, there are not that many issues, however
there is one that is growing and is becoming a major problem. In Portland, we have a major
homelessness problem. On top of the homeless issues there is a growing indifference towards the
homeless issue from the rest of the population. People just do not seem to care about the homeless
here in Portland. We see them so much it is almost like we are used to them and we do not think about
it. We just walk right by, indifferent. Some are annoyed by the homeless here, most seem to act like
they are invisible. The homeless are people too, they should be treated with dignity. In the past year or
so, around 2 million people were left homeless and this is sure to continue to rise over the next few
years. No one really knows why this is the way it is. Some factors that could cause homelessness are
losing a job, not being able to find a job, low wages, too many bills, various disabilities, and lack of
affordable housing and help. The term homelessness means people who do not have a home. The issue
needs to be looked at in many different angles. Homelessness can be looked at through the eyes

The Importance Of Forest Depletion In Nepal
Forest Area: 33.7% 25.4% (1990 2015). The forest area has decreased due to increased deforestation
and a risk of forest fires in Nepal.
Finland has supported Nepal s forestry initiatives since the 80s, and it includes large scale preparation,
plantation and implementation of Forestry Sector Master Plan (1988 2011), support to Community
Forestry and Leasehold Forestry Programs, Scientific Forest Management initiatives, National Forest
Resource Inventories and others.
Physiologically, the country is divided into five regions, according to altitude (the Terai, the Siwalik,
the Middle Mountains, the High Mountains and the High Himal). Of the total land area, forests cover
4.27 million ha (29.0 percent) and shrub covers 1.56 million ha (10.6 percent) (DFRS 1999). The
annual rate of forest depletion in the Terai was 1.3 percent from 1978/79 to 1990/91. In the hilly area,
forest areas have declined at an annual rate of 2.3 percent from 1978/79 to 1994. In the entire country,
from 1978 79 to 1994, the forest area has decreased at an annual rate of 1.7%. This trend indicates the

Tone, Symbols In Sylvia Plath s Poem, Daddy
In Sylvia Plath s free verse poem, Daddy, she describes her hatred towards her deceased father. Plath
uses tone, figures of speech, and symbols to illustrate her extreme anger and female protest towards
the man that raised her. Sylvia Plath has a dark, bitter tone in Daddy. She recalls all the pain that her
father has put her through, even after his death. The hatred in her tone deepens throughout the poem.
She starts by explaining that when she was twenty [she] tried to die/And get back, back, back to [her
father] (Plath 58 59), but by saying Daddy, daddy, you bastard, I m through. (Plath, 80), she declares

that women love the controlling wicked men like Hitler. She also compares her father to the devil
himself. She looks at a picture she has of him, and describes A cleft in [her father s] chin instead of

Qantas Groups performance over the 2007 to 2011 period has been relatively poor mainly as a result
of the global financial crisis adversely affecting the firm s international operations. Strategically,
Qantas is likely to continue to dominate the domestic airline industry with the success of Jetstar
prompting expansion into the Asia Pacific region. The most significant threats facing Qantas include
high fuel prices, the value of the Australian dollar and industrial action. A comprehensive financial

The airports in major cities around the world are also operated on a monopoly basis and therefore are
able to charge airlines high fees. The above examples have showed that the bargaining power of
supplies for the airline industry is considerably large and often play an important role in the operations
and level of profitability amongst the airlines.
Rivalry among the Existing Players: The level of competition between the airlines is very high. One
reason for this is the increase in popularity of low cost airlines, who employ innovative business
models to differentiate themselves and drive the profitability of their businesses. Another reason is
attributable to the nature of operation of the airlines the marginal cost of having extra passengers on a
scheduled flight is close to zero, which implies that airlines are capable of varying the price of air
tickets from time to time, or even engaging in price wars with their rivals. For instance, the recently
banned operation of Tiger Airways has created opportunity for two other major domestic airlines in
Australia, Jetstar and Virgin Blue, to increase prices in order to take advantage of the less competitive
environment and to increase their market shares.

Examination Of The Fourth Amendment
Examination of the Fourth Amendment The fundamental purpose of the Fourth Amendment in the
United States Constitution is to protect every citizen s right from unreasonable searches and seizures.
The Bill of Rights composed of the first 10 amendments states the limits of governmental authority.
For instance, the First Amendment guarantees individuals natural rights such as freedom of speech,
religion, and press. In addition, the Fourth Amendment restricts government intrusions into personal
privacy and property. Both the Bill of Rights and the Fourth Amendment emerged from several
English political documents such as the Magna Carta, the Petition of Right, and the English Bill of
Rights ( Bill of Rights Bill of Rights Institute ). Among these documents, the Magna Carta particularly
had a major influence on the establishment of the Fourth Amendment. Although the majority of the
laws addressed in the document are no longer valid in today s democratic system, the Magna Carta
was the first written document to guarantee citizens rights (Sen). Prior to the American Revolution, the
American colonies were not protected from unreasonable infringement. For instance, the British
colonists enforced tax measures by general searches, which constituted an unacceptable intrusion
(Levy). Although Writs of Assistance were issued by King George to investigate evidence of
smuggling by the colonists, they allowed the British agents to enter and search anyone s property

The End Of The Civil War
After the Civil War, the fact that slavery was abolished might seem to be the end of the story;
however, the problems derived from the abolishment of slavery had yet to be addressed. During the
Reconstruction Era, these problems were reflected on the political, social, and economic aspects.
Which played several major roles in shaping America from the late nineteenth into the twentieth
centuries. These three aspects, political, social, and economical, affected one another so much that they
were inseparable. The beginning leniency of Andrew Johnson all the way to the Confederates and later
the political conflict between Johnson and the Radical Republicans, and lastly, the political struggle
between Republicans and Democrats. It all resulted in the ever changing policies toward the freed
people. These different policies had strong effects on the society, especially the freed people. Although
some of the policies, such as the abolition of slavery and several Constitutional Amendments were
beneficial to the rights of freed people, the sudden increase of freed people brought about the
separation of black and white and many other social issues. Thus the real equality among people still
had yet to be achieved. The economy also affected the society and the politics. The depression of the
economy after the Civil War made people focus on their own situations, instead of worrying about the
freed people. For example the people were distressed about getting money and how to provide for

Conscription was a very controversial issue considering the outcomes of this law. It would force men

The Influences of Selected Political Writings by...
But my hope is to write a book that will be useful . . . and so I thought it sensible to go straight to a
discussion of how things are in real life and not waste time with a discussion of an imaginary world;
for the gap between how people actually behave and how they ought to behave is so great that anyone
who ignores everyday reality in order to live up to an ideal will soon discover he has been taught how
to destroy himself, not preserve himself. Niccolo Machiavelli Every person has a chance to leave a
mark on this earth, and every person gets to decide how he or she will do that. Two men decided that
they wanted to write about life and human actions that they noticed. Machiavelli wrote The Prince in
an attempt to gain a political position in the new government that was being established in Italy by the
Medici family. Although his book did not get him in to a governmental position like he was hoping
for, the book he wrote would become very influential to many others. The One thing that does set his
book apart from other philosophers is that he wrote the book not on how things should be, but how
things need to be in order for one to keep power and order. The writing of The Prince however, did
overlap with his second greatest writing The Discourses. Machiavelli saw history as a learning tool
and this can be seen in his writings of The Discourses. Thomas Hobbes wrote some of his best work

Differences Between Countries And Developing Countries
Geographers like to differentiate countries by grouping them into developed and developing countries.
A developed country is a country that has progressed relatively far during time and has a highly
developed economy and advanced technological infrastructure. Some examples of developed
countries are the U.S.A, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, Netherlands and many others. They are
normally the more profound countries that we hear about more often than developing countries. A
developing country is a country that is at an early stage in economic development and has a less
developed industrial base, and a low Human Development Index (HDI). The Human Development
Index is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and income per capita indicators and is
used to rank countries into tiers of human development. Having a low HDI means the country has a
low life expectancy, a shorter length of education and the income per capita is lower. Some examples
of developing countries are Brazil, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, India, Afghanistan, and many
others. I plan to bring you into an in depth explanation about the many differences in population
studies between Japan and Brazil. First off, we ll start with a little bit of background information on
both countries. Japan is an archipelago of 6,852 islands in East Asia with a population of 126,919,659
(July 2015). It has a land area of about 140,728 square miles and a total area of about 145,913 square

Competitive Bass Fishing
How did Bass fishing become a sport?
Fishing has always been a way to collect food, but did you know how it became a competitive sport?
It all started with a game of basketball. I am sure you are thinking to yourself; a game of basketball is
how fishing tournaments came about?
It all started with a man by the name of Ray Scott in 1968. While watching a basketball game he
thought of the idea of competitive Bass fishing. He than began to brainstorm ideas and write down the
rules of fishing tournaments. Later that year, he held the first All American Bass Tournament. After
that tournament, competitive Bass fishing took off like a 10 pound Bass taking away your fishing
pole.

Notes On Bloom s Connection Puzzles
Bloom s Connection Puzzles
a. The course content I would use this strategy for would be in Social Studies. However, this concept
could be applied to any area that would be taught in the eighth grade.
b. The learner will identify significant events, people, and documents in the major eras of United
States history.
c. This selected activity would work well for this content because it will allow the students to explore
different areas of a topic to help finish the puzzle. My thoughts are that this would be an ongoing
project that might take several days, weeks, or even the entire year as the students explore United
States history. My vision for this activity is to use puzzle pieces that are color coded. One specific
color for who, what, where, when, why, and how. The start of any puzzle column could be any color
and will be created by either the teacher or the student. The students and teachers will then finish the
puzzle column with as many different puzzle colors that are possible that will help to explain the
original puzzle piece. For instance, I might start with a who puzzle piece with the name Rosa Parks.
The students would then search that person to find how further information to place on connecting
color coded puzzle pieces. Another start might be a what with Stamp Act written on it. The students
would then find out further information to finish the puzzle. Each column of the puzzle pieces would
sit side by side to create a larger puzzle of our United

The Race Towards Independence Of The 1770 S
Cambria Beatty Linder
Dr. Scotti
History 201
2016. February 14
The Race Towards Independence In the 1770 s, Great Britain established a number of colonies in
North America. The Americans thought of themselves as citizens of Great Britain and subjects of King
George III. Over the span of ten years, Great Britain has experienced deterioration in their relationship
with the thirteen colonies. There were numerous factors that came into play in relation to the conflict
such as the Navigation Acts and Colonial Legislatures, which eventually led to the Revolutionary War
of April 1776. What started out as a minor conflict concluded with a war for Independence. It all
started when the British went to war with the French also known as the French and Indian War.
Following their victory in the French and Indian War in 1763, Great Britain took control of the French
holdings in North America, outside the Caribbean. The British sought to maintain peaceful relations
with those Indian tribes that had allied with the French, and keep them separated from the American
frontiersmen. To this end, the Royal Proclamation of 1763 restricted settlement west of the
Appalachian Mountains as this was designated an Indian Reserve. Disregarding the proclamation,
some groups of settlers continued to move west and establish farms. The proclamation was soon
modified and was no longer a hindrance to settlement, but the fact that it had been promulgated
without their prior consultation angered the colonists

The Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists...
For being over eight hundred years, the Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists
remained in remarkable condition. However, pieces of the original piece, which originated in the
Catalan chapel in Spain, have faded. Portions, especially along the bottom, have disappeared over
time. Even though historians moved it to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, it has not been fully
restored. The artist identified each of the apostles in the Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four
Evangelists, but the writing has grown fainter and this creates a difficulty for art historians. Another
key factor in the overall story represented has faded one of the lamps or incense holders beneath
Christ. The positions of the stories in the apse show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists uses an interesting technique in its apse,
compared to previous Byzantine decorations in apses. It incorporates the technique of fresco painting,
where artists painted pigments into the plaster and wood on the walls so the paint would become one
with the walls similar to methods used in ancient Greece, compared to exercising mosaics as
decorations in apses. The artist mostly employed primary pigments in the Christ in Majesty with
Symbols of the Four Evangelists to make the figures stand out. A repetition occurs in the pigments
with red, gold like yellow, and blue with the occasional purple and the hair colors vary with tones of
brown and grayish white. The style portrayed in the Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four
Evangelists follows previous rules with the representation of divine figures in churches. The
proportions of the piece utilizes the hierarchy scale with the most important figure Christ. The figure
of Christ is the largest image shown in the apse, and other figures such as the apostles, the four
symbols of the evangelists, and the scenes from the New Testament are roughly the same size. The
smallest figures appear in the windows the sacrifice scenes with Cain and Abel. The artist employed a
more decorative aspect to the drapery of the figures than a naturalistic

First Amendment And Music Censorship Essay
The First Amendment to the Bill of Rights exists because the Founders of our country understood the
importance of free expression. The First Amendment states Congress shall make no law . . . abridging
the freedom of speech, or of the press . . . (Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States
Constitution 17). One of the ways the American people use this freedom of speech and expression is
through the creation of the art form known as music. Music s verbal expression bonds our society
through our emotions and experiences. This fundamental right of freedom of expression is being
threatened by public and governmental groups who believe they have authority to monitor and decide
what others should experience. The censorship of music ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1964, The Rolling Stones catapulted to fame amid outrage and controversy about the surliness of
their demeanor and the length of their hair. The Stones were considered dangerous and riots and
scenes of hysteria erupted wherever they played. Today, they re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
winners of the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and on the cover of TIME
magazine (RIAA; History 2 of 4). There s nothing new about pop and rock music finding its roots in
the anger and rebellion of young people, and there s nothing new in older people expressing
unrealistic fears about that music (RIAA; History 3 of 4). History has shown us that what may be
initially perceived as objectionable is actually only the reaction of a new or different experience.
Musicians are protected under the First Amendment equally as any citizen in the United States of
America. They deserve the same basic human rights we all practice, however the freedom of
expression has special relevance for musicians (Hald 1 of 8). This offers a special protection of
musicians against arbitrary censorship and persecution (Hald 1 of 8). Not only does censorship of
music threaten the freedom of speech, but it also threatens a musician s right to promote their work
through free enterprise. Musicians have the freedom to play music in public or private domains, give
concerts, and release CDs (Hald 1 2 of 8). Some concert

Sympathetic Villain In Doctor Faustus
On the Differences between the Ultimate to the Sympathetic Villain
In John Milton s Paradise Lost Satan represents the ultimate villain, a genuine representation of the
dark side. For this reason, Milton s Satan is characterized with great decisiveness, lack of remorse
whatsoever, and bold disobedience against the all mighty God. For this reason Satan remains
throughout the poem in the evil side, without the ability to make even a temporary transfer from the
dark side to the opposite heavenly side; hence Satan stays confined in the evil realm. On the other
hand, in Christopher Marlowe s play The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus ,
Mephistopheles character represents a kind of villain that is somewhat easy to sympathize with.
Consequently, Marlowe s Mephistopheles is capable to represent the obvious side of evil and yet in
the same time to be an advocate in favor of repentance for Doctor Faustus. In Paradise Lost Milton
portrays Satan as the adversary to God. Although Milton does not portray God exactly as he is
described in the Bible, still he portrays God as the all mighty, the eternal, the creator of all creation,
and as the ultimate representation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Faustus, his character presents certain flexibility. Accordingly his character sustains duplicity of a
fallen angel which belongs to the evil realm , while on the other hand he expresses his sincere regret
of the fact that he has been deprived the joys of heaven.
The key to seeing Faustus in this way is a particularly puzzling, initially ludicrous exchange between
Faustus and Mephistopheles. Mephistopheles gives his greatest speech, and Faustus gives one of his
bumptious and aesthetically unappreciative replies:
MEPHISTOPHELES : Why, this is hell, nor am I out of it. h ink st thou that I, who saw the face of
God

The Downfall Of Habits In William Shakespeare s Macbeth
Macbeth , one of William Shakespeare s many famous plays, and the story that it follows is one that is
quite unfortunate. The protagonist, Macbeth, is a thane in Scotland who after a battle meets three
witches who grant him three prophecies, one is of the title that he already held, another is of a position
he would receive moments later, and the last most lofty one is that Macbeth shall become king. The
first two predictions create credibility for the third, and with this third prediction made it would seem
that Macbeth has been stripped of any decision and is forced to assert himself as king through murder.
The third prediction in particular creates the greatest evidence that Macbeth is acting on the witches
prophecies because he must, but when the situation is further inspected it becomes clear that the evil
acts he commits are of his own free will, and examples of this can be found in three murders he either
commits himself or hires murderers for: the murder of the king, the murder of one of his friends, and
the murder of a man s entire family. The first of the heinous crimes that Macbeth commits is by far the
most monumental, and that is the murder of the king of Scotland, Duncan. From the witches first set
of predictions that Macbeth, shalt be king hereafter, (Shakespeare I.3.71 72) it would seem that
Macbeth s hands were tied and he had no choice but to kill his king, but in reality the witches don t
say this anywhere in their first predictions. In addition to

Comparing Doaism and Mahayana Buddhism
When it comes to comparing Doaism and Mahayana Buddhism very few similarities exist. Although
both religions are practice based, opposed to religions based on faith, the ultimate goal of each
religion are vastly different. In Daoism it is believed that the spirit is eternal after death while In
Mahayana Buddhism we see that there is an end to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. However, there
is one similarity in both that is incredibly important to the practice of both religions. This similarity is
the concept of emptiness. By observing the proper practices of Bodhisatvvas in Buddhism and the
ideal ruler in Daoism we can see how both religions have a very similar view on the importance of
emptiness, and also how they differ. In the Daoist text the Tao Teh Ching, there is mention of the idea
of an empty bowl. This concept is very important and can be applied to many aspects of Daoist
practice. When thinking of a bowl we understand it as something that is to be filled. However, as it is
referred to in the Tao Teh Ching it is the empty space inside the bowl that gives it purpose.
Metaphorically the bowl is a representation of our mind. If we fill our mind and in turn close it off to
any new understanding we our limiting our potential. One of the most important concepts in Daoism is
Wei Wu Wei, or, action without action. Like water bending and moving through a stream it is believed
that people should act accordingly to nature not challenging or trying to act

The Battle Of Midway, America And The Empire Of Japan
Decisive Point in the Pacific The Battle of Midway became one of the quintessential events in the
struggle between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan. Though the official battle
only lasted for three days, its outcome signified the turning point for the United States in the pacific
theatre as well as the western front where the Allies had begun to achieve a foothold against Adolf
Hitler s Nazi Germany. Though it is just one small piece of World War II, The Battle of Midway
shows how both technological and tactical advances by the United States Navy were able to outwit the
numerically superior Japanese Navy. Japan was a formidable foe, its unyielding resolve pushed the
United States to its limits and had it lost the battle it may have changed how historians view history.
The Midway Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 1,486 miles to the west of the
island of Hawaii. The U.S. Navy first occupied the islands in the early 1940 s and used them as a
forward operations base, which included a seaport with multiple landing strips. Both sides saw the
island as a key asset to acquire which in turn would cut the vast size of the Pacific Ocean in half. The
Battle of Midway however was not the first time that the islands saw conflict. On December 7 1941,
about 30 minutes into the attack on the naval port of Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces made their first
attempt to claim the site. They were unsuccessful in there initial attempt but

The Crystal Palace And The Maison De Verre
The Crystal Palace, located in London, England, was constructed in 1851 by Joseph Paxton. Having
been the world s first structure to be built entirely out of glass, it has inspired and influenced many
glass frame construction throughout the years. It held many exhibitions during its lifetime and hosted
thousands of people from around the world. Unfortunately, the great Crystal Palace had a major design
flaw that inevitable caused its great destruction: flammable wood flooring and glass frame work. The
Palace caught fire and a sunny day in November 1936 and was never rebuilt. One of the many
buildings that were influenced by the Crystal Palace was the Masison de Verre in Paris, France. The
Maison de Verre was building in 1932 for a rich doctor who used the home as both a living space and
his office. The designer had to design the space in such a way that accommodated the doctor s needs.
For the purpose of this paper, I will be comparing the structure of both the Crystal Palace and the
Maison de Verre. Joseph Paxton was born in August 1803 in London England and died June of 1865.
Paxton s educational background was in architectural gardening. He was a Member of Parliament and
was contracted to design a lot of green houses for the government. For Joseph, the Crystal Palace was
his greatest master piece. He wanted the exhibit space to be grand, modern and something that has
never been made in the Victorian Era. His approach was to design the building with new and

Cuban Embargo And The Embargo
Introduction
The Cuban Embargo is restricting Cuba as a whole from progressing and advancing their technology.
They face economic constriction through the embargo, which inhibits them from trading with other
countries, cutting off the availability to necessary resources like current medical supplies. The U.S has
continued to bully Cuba with the embargo. Even after 50 years, the United States has taken limited
action to end the embargo and has attempted to keep Cuba under foot. As their own sovereign state,
they have the obligation to make their own decisions as a country rather than live under the blanket
control of a nation living with a 50 year old temper tantrum demanding nothing but democratization.
Analysis and Evaluation
In the first major article utilized for research, Relaxation of Cuban Embargo Urged in Congress , the
main claim is that congressional action taken to limit the effects of the embargo and possibly eliminate
it entirely would only strengthen the grip that Fidel Castro, the former dictator of Cuba has on his
country. The article talks about congressional action being taken in the United States congress, or the
lack of action that is being taken, and the effect that it has on Cuban humanitarian conditions. The tie
into the medical field is quite broad but the focus it brings on the Cuban embargo reveals significant
problems. The lack of medical supplies and equipment in the country due to the embargo is said to be
deliberate. ...shortages of

Essay on “Leaders and Followers”
Leaders and Followers
History has its unique way to express the historical evidence, as something very important and
interesting. From very routes of human existence people had two basic relationship: leader and
follower, what they thought would help them to create better society; or people just followed a strong
leader and gave their responsibilities to the person who could create a place where they can live and
prosper. But unfortunately this basic institution of leaders and followers brought not only good but
also the bad. What humanity knows and achieved by now is because of efforts, thinking, beliefs, ideas,

The Traditional authority in European countries came from the medieval ages, even farther from
ancient times when people believed that their king is the one that was chosen by Gods or by one God
in medieval ages (when Christianity became the dominant religion of the Europe). The absolute power
grew over time and reached to its pick the time of Imperialism when kings not only ruled over their
own people but also other less civilized countries. The king s power and authority cannot be
questioned and his actions cannot be judged. The king of the Belgium took the throne in 1865 and
king Leonard tried to become an absolute monarch. To reach his desires he tries to appeal to its people
by getting Congo as Belgium colony and succeeds. Leonard by getting Congo and absolute control
over economics the same time he gains control over Parliament, which loses its influence, and
becomes a subordinate to the royal house. The basis of the Traditional authority is that its followers
cannot challenge it, but changes happen in the world, and as the world moved into the road of progress
people started to question Traditional authority. Education is very crucial in understanding why people
start to challenge Traditional authority, as something that takes their rights and freedom. Mostly 90%

Second Language Acquisition ( Sla )
Second language acquisition (SLA) has long been a topic of interest for many researchers such as
linguists, psychologists, and educators. Through the study of SLA, researchers may better understand
the basic properties of languages, how languages are processed in the brain, and how to facilitate the
acquisition of a second language. A common topic of inquiry among SLA researchers is why some
people seem to learn new languages with ease while others do not. This question is especially
important to foreign language educators who want all of their students to succeed at becoming
proficient in a second language. In order to provide the proper support their students need, educators
must be aware of the many factors that influence SLA. In order to investigate why some language
learners appear to be more successful than others, researchers examine the differences between
individual learners. The current consensus among experts is that individual learners learn differently
depending on variables like learning opportunities, the motivation to learn, individual differences and
learning styles in second language acquisition (Bista, 2008, p. 2). Therefore an individual s success is
dependent on the combination of many factors. Educators may attempt to determine an individual s
chances at learning a language by measuring their language aptitude. While researchers thus far failed
to create a universal definition for language aptitude, they have identified some aspects of

The Awakening Personality Traits
In Kate Chopin s novel, The Awakening, the main character, Edna Pontellier, has three distinct
personality traits that define her throughout the book. One of her most perceptible traits is her
irresponsibility, especially in how she cares for her children and husband. Related to this peculiarity, is
her capacity to behave childish, particularly in terms of how she allows her emotions to sweep her
away as well as her inability to think about the potential consequences. Her most prominent
personality trait the one that forms the backbone of the conflict, is Edna s eagerness to defy society
and the roles given to women. These traits are consistent throughout the novel and while the character
does change by the end, these aspects never disappear. The main conflict in The Awakening is a

ending is so surprising because generally at the end of a novel, the main character has learned

behavior, attitude and overall character throughout the novel. Edna becomes more aware and

This gave me an opportunity to visualize the whole child at various points in development. I raised a

My child was a boy so I decided to name him Wolfgang. Wolfgang was born about four weeks
premature and underweight (four and a half pounds). To regulate his body temperature, he spent the

Berk mentions in his book that parent s who resolve conflicts with reason, instead of physical
punishment, have children that are more likely to be socially mature and well developed intellectually
(Berk 2010). Instead, we would put Wolfgang in a time out, induction, and used punishment by
removal (Berk 2010). I made sure that my partner was included when making parental decisions
because I did not want Wolfgang to start favoring one parent over the other.
When my partner and I decided to get back together, he started doing better in school (except math),
but he still got into fights at school, so my partner and I decided to talk to him about social skills and
taught him techniques he could use when he started to get upset or frustrated.
I m very happy that Wolfgang has a diverse view on gender roles (Berk 2010). I was nervous at first
because he did not seem to have any interest in Brianna. I feel as if my partner and I splitting, for the
short time we did, caused this effect on Wolfgang. When he was about 3, my partner and I had
Brianna. Wolfgang was a bit distant at the beginning, but he includes his sister while playing with
other kids and he tolerates girls better than other boys do. He enjoys playing the role as the big brother
and taking care of his sister. If he was not playing with her, he was playing make believe by himself. I
knew this was a good sign. I thought that this would be strengthening his mental abilities, like

Face To Face Communication In So You Ve Been Publicly Shamed
Technological advances have undoubtedly changed the way that humans communicate with each
other, but is it leading the old fashioned method of face to face communication towards deterioration?
Popularity in the usage of cyber communication has most definitely expanded, coming with its own
advantages and disadvantages. The argument that cyber communication is possibly replacing face to
face communication is argued, while many fail to realize that face to face communication has its own
disadvantages as well. Both these methods of communication function in conjunction with one
another, consequently, one cannot replace the other. Jon Ronson is able to provide strong examples of
the disadvantages of cyber communication in his novel So You ve Been Publicly Shamed, while
failing to note that there are also definite advantages to cyber communication, as well as positive and
negative aspects to face to face communication.
Cyber communication has the ability to completely deteriorate people s reputations, as shown in Jon
Ronson s novel So You ve Been Publicly Shamed. Cyber communication, more specifically, social
media, has internet trolls hiding behind screens that voluntarily slander others. Then there are
everyday people, such as Justine Sacco, that choose to say the wrong thing and find their lives ruined
and jobs lost. Jon Ronson poses an interesting question in regards to the slander that Sacco received
after posting her tweets, what was it for: just some social media drama?

Personal Narrative-La TĂȘte
The city glows. The city breathes; living. Tin is crushed between my fingers. My claws pierce its hide.
I toss it to the streets: a near spent carcass for mechanic scavengers.
Autumn s blood stains the sky and the land with scarlets and ochres. Against the jet, obsidian, ebony
of the city, a dark, foreboding attraction is conjured in one s eye. A rope with which you tie your own
noose. Three crimson dots on coarse black leather.
My scars itch. I resist the urge to scratch them. The eyepatch is a static constant, the only entity in the
Universe that will not change, not evolve, no exceptions. My shoes produce a hollow, sharp tap that
echoes wetly against the damp ground.
The roads are rain slick and empty. A chill ices my cheek, but beads of sweat dust ... Show more

The familiarity suddenly hits me, and I come to terms with how long I ve been away from home.
Swiftly, I hear the loud tapping of meaty fingers on an archaic keyboard, and the door dividing me
from my associates inches open with a small airtight hiss. I push it open, stepping over the threshold,
and turning with a start as it rapidly closes behind me.
Can t be too careful these days, my friend, I turn around to see my long time associate, the image of a
decrepit, graying hyena reflected on a monitor which I don t recognise. The monitor is larger than I am
used to, dominating an entire wall, with sprawling wires emerge like hair from every part of it,
connecting mainframes and other hardware that is stacked messily along the other walls. La TĂȘte
slumps on a massive chair, his dark eyes flitting between the two of us. A smile grows on my face.
There s barely enough space in the tiny room to fit the three of

Guilt And Appreciation In Those Winter Sundays By Robert...
Something so simple as thanking someone for holding the door open or smiling at passerby s can
make a big difference in someone s day. So, it is even more important to treat loved ones with respect
and to show them appreciation, as it means much more than a simple smile from a stranger. Guilt is a
very difficult thing to live with. It is better to be courteous of others and thoughtful than to deal with
the dreadful guilt. The themes of guilt and appreciation are shown in the poem, Those Winter Sundays
by Robert Hayden. To appreciate and respect a loved one shows them how truly special they are, and
lets them know that they are noticed and their actions are not taken for granted. Everyone deserves to
know that they are loved and appreciated.

Also, the adaptation of other languages vocabulary and usage into the English language, and how English has impacted vocabulary and grammar structures on other languages. Furthermore, it talks about the effects on minority languages due to the continuous spread and dominance of English. Later, it touches upon some positive aspects that it has brought into modern day life across the globe. English as a Lingua Franca Over centuries, the English language has evolved from the roots of other ancient languages including: Latin, the Germanic languages, French, even Greek. Their influences are clear to see in its vocabulary and spoken dialects, which have also adopted words into its lexicon. The continual spread and reach of the language brings cause for concern for those who feel that the impact it has on culture, history and traditions of minorities due to its tendency to dominate all aspects of societies if allowed. However, the usage of the native English language has not gone unaffected due to cross dialect influences and the need to accommodate others by using non conventional structures. The positive aspects are too many to mention, especially in the modern times of globalization and I believe that the case for English as a lingua franca may always be ... Fear itself is terrifying, it leaves one feeling helpless; like they are left with only one or no options. The rise of Hitler and the Holocaust rampaged because due to fear of a Jewish Bolshevik conspiracy to take over the world. Fear has left the land of immigrants, the United States of America, feeling as it need to put up tall walls. Fear makes people feel like they need to do the most irrational things. King James feared women like Lady Macbeth because her power came from within herself. She understood that she could achieve anything with or without anyone by her side. He feared women who threatened the natural order, showed aggressive tendencies, and were capable of being independent (Smith). Shakespeare used Lady Macbeth as a subtle imitation for the historical women King James persecuted (Moir). The Weird Sisters used methods like image magic on the world around them to injure. While others in Shakespeare s England were executed for witchcraft that never engaged in any practices associated with witchcraft or magic at all (Smith). One of the key areas in CSR practices is paying attention to environmental issues such as energy saving and avoidance of excessive use of inputs. The promotion of resource efficiency including using less energy and water lower the utility costs. Nonetheless, a reduction in the use of packaging materials helps to reduce production cost. In the past year or so, around 2 million people were left homeless and this is sure to continue to rise over the next few years. No one really knows why this is the way it is. Some factors that could cause homelessness are losing a job, not being able to find a job, low wages, too many bills, various disabilities, and lack of affordable housing and help. Examination Of The Fourth Amendment Examination of the Fourth Amendment The fundamental purpose of the Fourth Amendment in the United States Constitution is to protect every citizen s right from unreasonable searches and seizures. The Bill of Rights composed of the first 10 amendments states the limits of governmental authority. For instance, the First Amendment guarantees individuals natural rights such as freedom of speech, religion, and press. In addition, the Fourth Amendment restricts government intrusions into personal privacy and property. Both the Bill of Rights and the Fourth Amendment emerged from several English political documents such as the Magna Carta, the Petition of Right, and the English Bill of Rights ( Bill of Rights Bill of Rights Institute ). Among these documents, the Magna Carta particularly had a major influence on the establishment of the Fourth Amendment. Although the majority of the laws addressed in the document are no longer valid in today s democratic system, the Magna Carta was the first written document to guarantee citizens rights (Sen). Prior to the American Revolution, the American colonies were not protected from unreasonable infringement. For instance, the British colonists enforced tax measures by general searches, which constituted an unacceptable intrusion (Levy). Although Writs of Assistance were issued by King George to investigate evidence of smuggling by the colonists, they allowed the British agents to enter and search anyone s property without a specific ... Which played several major roles in shaping America from the late nineteenth into the twentieth centuries. These three aspects, political, social, and economical, affected one another so much that they were inseparable. The beginning leniency of Andrew Johnson all the way to the Confederates and later the political conflict between Johnson and the Radical Republicans, and lastly, the political struggle between Republicans and Democrats. It all resulted in the ever changing policies toward the freed people. These different policies had strong effects on the society, especially the freed people. Although some of the policies, such as the abolition of slavery and several Constitutional Amendments were beneficial to the rights of freed people, the sudden increase of freed people brought about the separation of black and white and many other social issues. Thus the real equality among people still had yet to be achieved. The economy also affected the society and the politics. A developed country is a country that has progressed relatively far during time and has a highly developed economy and advanced technological infrastructure. February 14 The Race Towards Independence In the 1770 s, Great Britain established a number of colonies in North America. The Americans thought of themselves as citizens of Great Britain and subjects of King George III. Over the span of ten years, Great Britain has experienced deterioration in their relationship with the thirteen colonies. There were numerous factors that came into play in relation to the conflict such as the Navigation Acts and Colonial Legislatures, which eventually led to the Revolutionary War of April 1776. What started out as a minor conflict concluded with a war for Independence. It all started when the British went to war with the French also known as the French and Indian War. Following their victory in the French and Indian War in 1763, Great Britain took control of the French holdings in North America, outside the Caribbean. The British sought to maintain peaceful relations with those Indian tribes that had allied with the French, and keep them separated from the American frontiersmen. To this end, the Royal Proclamation of 1763 restricted settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains as this was designated an Indian Reserve. • 27. The Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists... For being over eight hundred years, the Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists remained in remarkable condition. However, pieces of the original piece, which originated in the Catalan chapel in Spain, have faded. Portions, especially along the bottom, have disappeared over time. Even though historians moved it to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, it has not been fully restored. The artist identified each of the apostles in the Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists, but the writing has grown fainter and this creates a difficulty for art historians. Another key factor in the overall story represented has faded one of the lamps or incense holders beneath Christ. The positions of the stories in the apse show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists uses an interesting technique in its apse, compared to previous Byzantine decorations in apses. It incorporates the technique of fresco painting, where artists painted pigments into the plaster and wood on the walls so the paint would become one with the walls similar to methods used in ancient Greece, compared to exercising mosaics as decorations in apses. The artist mostly employed primary pigments in the Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists to make the figures stand out. A repetition occurs in the pigments with red, gold like yellow, and blue with the occasional purple and the hair colors vary with tones of brown and grayish white. The style portrayed in the Christ in Majesty with Symbols of the Four Evangelists follows previous rules with the representation of divine figures in churches. The proportions of the piece utilizes the hierarchy scale with the most important figure Christ. The figure of Christ is the largest image shown in the apse, and other figures such as the apostles, the four symbols of the evangelists, and the scenes from the New Testament are roughly the same size. The smallest figures appear in the windows the sacrifice scenes with Cain and Abel. The artist employed a more decorative aspect to the drapery of the figures than a naturalistic ... • 28. First Amendment And Music Censorship Essay The First Amendment to the Bill of Rights exists because the Founders of our country understood the importance of free expression. The First Amendment states Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press . . . (Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution 17). One of the ways the American people use this freedom of speech and expression is through the creation of the art form known as music. Music s verbal expression bonds our society through our emotions and experiences. This fundamental right of freedom of expression is being threatened by public and governmental groups who believe they have authority to monitor and decide what others should experience. The Stones were considered dangerous and riots and scenes of hysteria erupted wherever they played. Today, they re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, winners of the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and on the cover of TIME magazine (RIAA; History 2 of 4). There s nothing new about pop and rock music finding its roots in the anger and rebellion of young people, and there s nothing new in older people expressing unrealistic fears about that music (RIAA; History 3 of 4). History has shown us that what may be initially perceived as objectionable is actually only the reaction of a new or different experience. Musicians are protected under the First Amendment equally as any citizen in the United States of America. They deserve the same basic human rights we all practice, however the freedom of expression has special relevance for musicians (Hald 1 of 8). This offers a special protection of musicians against arbitrary censorship and persecution (Hald 1 of 8). • 29. Sympathetic Villain In Doctor Faustus On the Differences between the Ultimate to the Sympathetic Villain In John Milton s Paradise Lost Satan represents the ultimate villain, a genuine representation of the dark side. For this reason, Milton s Satan is characterized with great decisiveness, lack of remorse whatsoever, and bold disobedience against the all mighty God. For this reason Satan remains throughout the poem in the evil side, without the ability to make even a temporary transfer from the dark side to the opposite heavenly side; hence Satan stays confined in the evil realm. On the other hand, in Christopher Marlowe s play The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus , Mephistopheles character represents a kind of villain that is somewhat easy to sympathize with. Consequently, Marlowe s Mephistopheles is capable to represent the obvious side of evil and yet in the same time to be an advocate in favor of repentance for Doctor Faustus. In Paradise Lost Milton portrays Satan as the adversary to God. The protagonist, Macbeth, is a thane in Scotland who after a battle meets three witches who grant him three prophecies, one is of the title that he already held, another is of a position he would receive moments later, and the last most lofty one is that Macbeth shall become king. The first two predictions create credibility for the third, and with this third prediction made it would seem that Macbeth has been stripped of any decision and is forced to assert himself as king through murder. The third prediction in particular creates the greatest evidence that Macbeth is acting on the witches prophecies because he must, but when the situation is further inspected it becomes clear that the evil acts he commits are of his own free will, and examples of this can be found in three murders he either commits himself or hires murderers for: the murder of the king, the murder of one of his friends, and the murder of a man s entire family. The first of the heinous crimes that Macbeth commits is by far the most monumental, and that is the murder of the king of Scotland, Duncan. From the witches first set of predictions that Macbeth, shalt be king hereafter, (Shakespeare I.3.71 72) it would seem that Macbeth s hands were tied and he had no choice but to kill his king, but in reality the witches don t say this anywhere in their first predictions. Although both religions are practice based, opposed to religions based on faith, the ultimate goal of each religion are vastly different. In Daoism it is believed that the spirit is eternal after death while In Mahayana Buddhism we see that there is an end to the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. However, there is one similarity in both that is incredibly important to the practice of both religions. This similarity is the concept of emptiness. By observing the proper practices of Bodhisatvvas in Buddhism and the ideal ruler in Daoism we can see how both religions have a very similar view on the importance of emptiness, and also how they differ. In the Daoist text the Tao Teh Ching, there is mention of the idea of an empty bowl. This concept is very important and can be applied to many aspects of Daoist practice. When thinking of a bowl we understand it as something that is to be filled. However, as it is referred to in the Tao Teh Ching it is the empty space inside the bowl that gives it purpose. Metaphorically the bowl is a representation of our mind. If we fill our mind and in turn close it off to any new understanding we our limiting our potential. The Battle Of Midway, America And The Empire Of Japan Decisive Point in the Pacific The Battle of Midway became one of the quintessential events in the struggle between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan. Though the official battle only lasted for three days, its outcome signified the turning point for the United States in the pacific theatre as well as the western front where the Allies had begun to achieve a foothold against Adolf Hitler s Nazi Germany. Though it is just one small piece of World War II, The Battle of Midway shows how both technological and tactical advances by the United States Navy were able to outwit the numerically superior Japanese Navy. Japan was a formidable foe, its unyielding resolve pushed the United States to its limits and had it lost the battle it may have changed how historians view history. The Midway Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean approximately 1,486 miles to the west of the island of Hawaii. The U.S. Navy first occupied the islands in the early 1940 s and used them as a forward operations base, which included a seaport with multiple landing strips. Both sides saw the island as a key asset to acquire which in turn would cut the vast size of the Pacific Ocean in half. The Battle of Midway however was not the first time that the islands saw conflict. As their own sovereign state, they have the obligation to make their own decisions as a country rather than live under the blanket control of a nation living with a 50 year old temper tantrum demanding nothing but democratization. Analysis and Evaluation In the first major article utilized for research, Relaxation of Cuban Embargo Urged in Congress , the main claim is that congressional action taken to limit the effects of the embargo and possibly eliminate it entirely would only strengthen the grip that Fidel Castro, the former dictator of Cuba has on his country. The article talks about congressional action being taken in the United States congress, or the lack of action that is being taken, and the effect that it has on Cuban humanitarian conditions. Through the study of SLA, researchers may better understand the basic properties of languages, how languages are processed in the brain, and how to facilitate the acquisition of a second language. A common topic of inquiry among SLA researchers is why some people seem to learn new languages with ease while others do not. This question is especially important to foreign language educators who want all of their students to succeed at becoming proficient in a second language. In order to provide the proper support their students need, educators must be aware of the many factors that influence SLA. In order to investigate why some language learners appear to be more successful than others, researchers examine the differences between individual learners. The current consensus among experts is that individual learners learn differently depending on variables like learning opportunities, the motivation to learn, individual differences and learning styles in second language acquisition (Bista, 2008, p. 2). Therefore an individual s success is dependent on the combination of many factors. Educators may attempt to determine an individual s chances at learning a language by measuring their language aptitude.
