Alice Gilbert Monologue
A few minutes passed by until Alice was able to speak and let me lead he back to the bedroom. We sat
on the end of the bed until 6:30 am while Alice explained to me that it was Mrs. Gilbert on the phone,
a co worker at the Elementary School, and the wife of Mr. Gilbert the town s Sherriff. She told Alice
that her student Janie Augustine went missing on her way home from school that day. And that a few
hours before a camper found her dead in the Red furrow woods, 17 miles away from the Elementary
School. And when Alice asked Mrs. Gilbert how Janie died. Mrs. Gilbert choked on her words as she
said Janie was murder. She bled out after being hit with an ax in the stomach.
I asked more questions I swear, but she said she couldn t say anymore, that she shouldn t have told me
anything Alice cried. I tried my best to come up with something to say to her. I ve never been in a
situation like this. I just let her cry into her knees again. I walked over to the kitchen and brewed her
some tea to help her get back to sleep, but by the time I got back into the room she was already fast
asleep, tears still on her cheek. The dog was curled up in the bend of her knees. I set the tea on the
nightstand, wiped away her tear and got into bed myself. I last little bit has been so hectic, trying to

Compare And Contrast Classical Conditioning And...
3. To test which rats had received Pavlovian and which, instrumental conditioning would be to
perform extinction. Extinction involves repeatedly presenting the conditioned stimulus without the
unconditioned stimulus. Extinction that occurs in classical conditioning happens when a conditioned
stimulus is no longer paired with an unconditioned stimulus. Therefore, for one group, you would
remove the tone. In operant conditioning, the extinction can occur if the trained behavior is no longer
reinforced. Thus, for another group, extinguish tone and food. By doing this, I would see that the
classically conditioned rat s behavior would decline quicker than the operant conditioned rats. Also,
another way to test this is to look at the delay in behaviors. In classically conditioned rats, it uses short
delay conditioning in which the conditioned stimulus begins a second or so before the unconditioned
stimulus. Thus, if you used long delay conditioning, the classically conditioned rats behavior of
turning around to receive the food would slowly decrease. This is because the classically conditioned
rats are used to the short delay and when the long delay is used the behavior will slowly decrease. In
classically conditioned rats, you would see that the timing of the conditioned response will slowly
decrease. With the operant conditioned rats, you would see that their responses will not decrease as
quickly as the classically conditioned rats. This is because the operant conditioned rats

The Barber Shop
He looked at the mess of boxes and lines and saw something that he remembered, the barber shop he
thought that s on the next block over. After an hour of slow wandering he finally found the barber

MEANING, IMPORTANCE AND FUNCTIONS OF
LANGUAGE
WHAT IS LANGUAGE?
Language is the most important aspect in the life of all beings. We use language to express inner
thoughts and emotions, make sense of complex and abstract thought, to learn to communicate with
others, to fulfill our wants and needs, as well as to establish rules and maintain our culture.
In a sense, animals talk to one another. But it is different from human talk. Every human language
uses sounds. Not all animal languages do, however. The language of the bees and some other kinds of

PURPOSE AND COLLECTION METHODS
The English which is spoken in India is different from that spoken in other regions of the world, and it
is regarded as the unique variety which is called Indian English. The purpose of this folklore project is
to show some of the various ways Indians have intentionally and unintentionally customized English
to better suit their needs and to discuss some of the problems and situations which can and do arise
when Indians use or experience English in different settings. Attitudes about English and English
speakers in India are also explored.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF INDIAN ENGLISH
Indian English is a distinct variety of the English language. Many Indians claim that it is very similar
to British English, but this opinion is based on a surface level examination of lexical similarities. Of
course, one must keep in mind that not every linguistic item is used by every Indian English speaker
and that a great deal of regional and educational differentiation exists. Even so, items can be identified
which are indicative of Indian English speech and which are widely used.

Claudio Monteverdi vs. Domenico Scarlatti Essay
A comparison of two major Baroque composers: Claudio Monteverdi and Domenico Scarlatti The
purpose of this paper is to analyze two psalms by Claudio Giovanni Antonio Monteverdi (1567 1643)
and Giovanni Domenico Scarlatti (1685 1757) and compare and contrast the two pieces to find out
how music changed throughout the Baroque period.
While historians grouped music of the Baroque period together based on certain characteristics, the
music did not remain the same throughout the period, as it would not for any other musical time
period. Composers from different points in the Baroque period were chosen, but the things the two
composers had in common were the country of residence and their nationality. Special care was taken
to chose composers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is octave doubling in the bass, and the fifth occurs often since it was considered to be perfect or
somehow godly. What makes this psalm different from Scarlatti s other psalms is that it is the only
psalm that exhibits an organized concerto style. This psalm is also written in Latin, and has no
indicated dynamics. It begins in D major, and switches to A and E major, and b and a minor
throughout the setting, and ends back on D major. The piece does have some ornamentation,
consisting of argued trills. The argument comes from odd markings on the original manuscript. Some
people feel that the markings were just hastily drawn trills, while others feel they may actually be
mordants. In the newest transcription, they have all been transcribed as trills. The main reason for the
lack of ornamentation put into the music is an attempt to make the music less frilly. In the Baroque era
this tooking away from the sacred message it was supposed to send.
While both pieces are a part of each composer s library of sacred music, they are in some respects not
very much alike and in others they are very similar. There are the obvious things they have in common
such as the fact that they are written in Latin. That is not too surprising considering some churches
still used Latin as the primary language in their services, even though in the Baroque period many
churches began using the vernacular so the patrons would understand the services. Aside from that,
Monteverdi, being more

The Misconceptions Of Children
Rational When preschool age children learning about measurement in mathematics, there are three
misconceptions are commonly found, including struggles in recognising the difference between
volume and capacity, as well as difference between weight and mass, and the lack of understanding in
concept of conservation in measurement, because children have not complete their cognitive
development to process those abstract concepts (MacDonald Rafferty, 2015; Piaget, 1969). It is
important to clarify those misconceptions to children, so they can develop a complete understanding
about measurement, for measurement is an essential daily life skill (e.g. use measurement to bake a
cake or check the time) (Knaus, 2013; MacDonald Rafferty, 2015). Measurement

The Giver Movie Vs Book
The Giver novel published in 1993 written by Lois Lowry. And until after 21 years, released on big
screen directed by Philip Noyce. The Giver is a must read, about a teenage boy, 16 years of age, Jonas
(Brenton Thwaites) living in a far futuristic dystopian society where everything seems to be a
PERFECT life with Sameness. But when Jonas is selected instead of assigned a job, he is to receive
memory from the Giver (Jeff Bridges) as his assigned role. Jonas realises the bright and dark
factualities of his community. And with the dark truths, Jonas decides to try to escape from the society
to elsewhere, releasing all memories to everyone.
From the novel to the film, Noyce, and screenwriters Michael Mitnick and Robert Weide stay close to
the plot and characters with some significant changes. The movie begins introducing the community
and their technological dwellings where Jonas, his assigned parents (Alexander Skarsgard and Katie
Holmes) and younger sister (Emma Tremblay) live as black and white to show what the people living
in the community see as it is not very interesting. But in the book, it begins with the recent release
with no identification of the colors that are seen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

sight of Jonah with a drone, but after Jonas persuades Asher to let them go, he drops Jonas into a

memories to his community. In comparison to the book, it only has a short chapter on Jonas daring
escaping with Gabriel, which was definitely not as exaggerated as the

Behavior Change Project Report
Behavior Change Project
Selecting a Student
I selected my student from one of my students that I viewed to have some of the worst behavior in the
class. I am at Bond Elementary School which is an intercity school. Most of the school s student
population comes from subsidized housing (the projects). I am in a first grade class of nineteen
students. While performing my duties at in Mrs. J Williams Classroom I became very eager to observe
as well as work with a student by the name of Ja Von W. Ja Von is a six year old, I recently found out
that his mother is on drugs and is being supported by his sixteen year old brother. Many of the
students that I have observed in the classroom have had behavior problems and issues with their ...

In the intervention after helping him with his vocabulary and introducing the interventive technique I
will record how many words he gets wrong with the tally marks on the form same as I did for
baseline. Ja Von will hopefully be reading with 80% fluency after the end of the intervention.
Developing an Intervention
The intervention I selected was Chart Moves. The way that I implemented this particular intervention
with the student is by writing his name on the poster in which I supplied. Every time the student
performed the desired behavior, which was reading fluently within two minutes and answering post
questions he would move up half a notch. With the chart, Ja Von would have the opportunity to earn
different reinforcement such as things that he was interested in or things that he liked. I became aware
of the things that he was interested in during the observation phase and before I introduced him to the
intervention, I asked him to make a list of the 10 things that he enjoyed doing or things that he liked in
general. The list included but were not limited too cookies, candy and action figures. This gave me the
opportunity to use the reinforcers as ways to increase the desired behavior and decrease the
inappropriate one. After the intervention was introduced, it was explained to the student how it would
work. Moreover, the way the system was designed to work in the way that the student would quickly
and accurately read a passage

Health And Safety Policies And Procedures
When we work with children, our career is likely to involve close working with other agencies. Multi
agency working is an effective way of supporting children and families with additional needs. Multi
agency working brings together practitioners from different areas and professions within the
workforce to provide integrated support to children and their families, for example a team around the
child . It is an effective way of supporting children with additional needs and helping to secure real
improvements in their life outcomes the way different professionals work together in the early years to
promote health and safety. You must evaluate the various strategies that are used as well as the
effectiveness of the health and safety policies and procedures. This means to work hand in hand with
different organisations, professional, colleagues, parent and specialist whereby information sharing is
being communicated to each other in order to communicate assessment intervention, a follow up and
that communication should be two ways. This can be classed as different organisation working
together to safeguard children and young persons and most of these organisations are funded bodies
and businesses .This also means that we need to be established and abide with all the guidelines and to
work within the law especially when it regards with children and young person. Common barriers for

Informative Speech On Racism
Racism is like an epidemic in that it is spread by communities and affects thousands of lives every
day. It is shown through speech and actions from the age range of children to elders. When in effect,
racism can become violent and flip lives upside down. Fast forward past all the civil rights movements
and efforts to halt racism, and today s society still has an abundance of racism. Eradicating racism all
together has been the goal since the beginning of time, but I believe to make people aware of actual
damage it causes is the best way to advocate how wrong this discrimination is. One of the most
impactful program I have seen to spread awareness of racism is the television hit series titled Switched
at Birth . During the specific episode, a select group of white students placed cotton balls throughout
the lawn of the Black Student Union. Since these said students were white and rich, they got away
with it. This lack of punishment from authority for such a horrendous act created an uprising within
the Union. Not only did they peacefully protest, but one member went on a hunger strike to gain
attention. The school refused to partake in the expulsion of the students and requests of equality from
the union, so the one member continued her hunger strike. Soon after this refusal of acknowledgment,
the said member was sent to the hospital as she had passed out and almost lost her life. Even after this
event, the school wanted to ignore her actions and keep the students.

An Idea That Protects A Proprietor s Land Title
Indefeasibility Introduction Indefeasibility of title is an idea that protects a proprietor s land title. It
allows for the proprietor to be immune from attack by adverse claims and interests in the land, in
which he, the proprietor, is registered. This concept is based around the Torrens system in New
Zealand, this concept consists of three main principles, the mirror, the curtain and the insurance
principles. This essay will discuss the concept of indefeasibility of title, the Torrens system and how
these have provided security of title for land owners in New Zealand. I will also report on two
significant cases that will illustrate the concept of Indefeasibility of title, they are Frazer v Walker and
Efstratiou, Glantschnig and Petrovic v Glatnschnig. Common Law Common law was implemented in
New Zealand when the British settlers arrived. It was in accordance with English law and was known
as the Deeds system and Act and was replaced by the Torrens system in 1870. Common Law basically
stated that no one could confer a better title than the one they have and therefore if a deed was deemed
invalid, so too was the title (Hinde 2013). Torrens System The Torrens system is what indefeasibility
of title has been built around. It has existed since 1870 and has been refined and is now found in the
Land Transfer Act 1952. The system, as mentioned earlier, consists of three principles, the mirror
principle, the curtain principle and the insurance principle. The Mirror principle:

Essay on Jesse Cleveland Owens
James Cleveland Owens otherwise known as Jesse was an Olympic long jumper and sprinter whose
speed and inspirational defiance of Hitler shocked the world. The 1936 Olympics were held in Berlin
and Adolf Hitler of the Nazi party believed that these Olympic Games would showcase the great skill
of the Aryan (Caucasian) race, and the last person he would expect to show him up would be an
African American man (Barnes 1). With sixty six U.S. Olympic contestants competing in the Games,
the American race was really put on the spot in front of Hitler, the most powerful man in the world
(Smith 1). Jesse Owens was one of these men, and while being laughed at by Hitler during his one

He argued that the Olympic ideal was to be a time out from war and above politics (Smith 4).
Owens was an underprivileged African American boy that grew up in the south during the early
nineteen hundreds, his chances of making the Olympics were far out of his reach. He was born in
Oakville, Alabama and was the youngest in the family with six brothers and three sisters (Barnes 1).
At the age of nine Owens family moved to Columbus Ohio because of the bad economy and
segregation that was prominent in the south. When Jesse was five he had developed a life threatening
tumor on his chest, but because of his families overwhelming poverty he never received proper
medical care (McCoy 1). However according to McCoy (1), One day Jesse woke up to his mother
Mary standing over him with a sterilized knife and boiling water. She cut the tumor off her baby boy,
causing him to bleed for three days. Fortunately, he survived the amateur surgery. Surprisingly this
surgery performed by his mother was successful and Owens never had issues with the tumor or the
surgery at any time in his life. As a kid Jesse was very shy and it was because of this shyness he
possessed that he is called Jesse Owens today. According to Smith (3), When his new teacher asked

Schumann and the Kinderszenen
Schumann and the Kinderszenen Robert Schumann, composer throughout the early to mid nineteenth
century, is probably best known for his songs and piano works. Before injuring his finger most likely
through the use of a chiroplast (an instrument that guides the hands while playing; highly
controversial), Schumann was an avid piano player, if not a proper concert pianist and virtuoso[1]. But
due to this ailing finger, Schumann had to eventually find other means to support his life. Thankfully
for us, he eventually turned to composition, and furthermore, to piano composition. His affinity for
piano led to some of the best character pieces for piano ever created, including the piano cycles
Papillon, Carnaval, and Kreisleriana. But these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Koßmaly continues by saying that through the truth of description, [and] the naturalness of the
coloration Kinderszenen achieves cohesiveness.[7] But also, it is worth noting that the repetition of
certain themes, including the melody in the opening line of the cycle from Von fremden Landern und
Menschen (Figure 2), also play a role in connecting individual movements despite the stylistic
differences between them.[8] [pic] It is this cohesiveness that plays a vital role in the immersion of the
listener into the music, and therefore ultimately determined the public success of the piece. Unlike
many of Schumann s earlier piano cycles, Kinderszenen received quite a favorable public reception. In
fact, it was Schumann s most financially successful collection to date, which was especially important
since at that time he was attempting to prove himself both professionally and financially to Friedrich
Wieck, Clara s father, so he could marry Clara. This success may have been a result of the differences
made between the Kinderszenen and his previous works as outlined above, but perhaps also the
favorable reception may have been a result of Schumann s return to simplistic forms and ideas instead
of over complicating his

Analysis Of Out Of The Attic By Briann G. Greenfield
Likewise, many historians consider the importance of studying the Colonial Revival from a material
culture lens. Alan Axelrod articulates, Objects play a central role in the processes of the Colonial
Revival. Similarly, Briann G. Greenfield s Out of the Attic: Inventing Antiques in Twentieth Century
New England, suggests an extension of this idea of the centrality of objects. It is, in effect, a
celebration of material culture as it relates to a larger historical context. Greenfield effectively
describes the evolution of historical and aesthetic use of antiques from the 1900 s onward. Acts of
collecting, selling, and displaying the antiques are points of interest in her collection of essays. She

Chapter three presents Jessie Barker Gardner and George Gardner as twentieth century antique
collectors based in Providence New England. The couple were small time, middle class antique
collectors. They were interested in the philanthropic area of collecting. The Gardner s sought to make
a connection between the collegiate space and the museum. Eventually, the Gardner s donated many
of their most prized collectables to Brown University. They implemented very crafty and effective
sales techniques. Their goal was to subvert the market and capture the antiques at bargain prices.
Though Jessie and George Gardner relished the pursuit of collecting and philanthropy, it was almost
always about the profitability. This discussion offers a connection to Thomas Denenberg s use of
Wallace Nutting. Like Nutting, the Gardner s excelled in a plethora of marketing techniques and
entrepreneurship. She further links the importance of consumer culture that Denenberg alludes too.

Massachusetts. He, too, believed that historic objects reflected American patriotism. He criticized
Williamsburg and Deerfield as being restored or preserved villages.
Conversely, under his direction, Deerfield, Massachusetts became a natural preservation. This chapter

Arminianism And John Calvin Similarities
At the turn of the 17 th century there was a major theological movement involving the Calvinistic
Systematic Theology (known as Calvinism) and Arminian Systematic Theology (known as
Arminianism). While they are both historically related, having been born from the Protestant
Reformation, they are also conflicting with each other. Calvinism In 1536 John Calvin published his
work The Institutes of the Christian Religion in which he covered several theological topics. Such
teachings attracted the church of Geneva leading to the reformation of the church to an apostolic
model (following the biblical model Jesus had established with his apostles) and the establishment of

However, both of these are teachings of man and not Jesus. I want to learn from Him and so I ll go

Switzerland and the Concept of Comparative Advantage
While most in today s hyper competitive global economy look towards countries including; China,
India, Taiwan, Vietnam, and others in search of lower production costs seeking the ever illusive
comparative advantage, others have different ideas. Switzerland, a tiny land locked nation in central
Europe surrounded by Alps with a relatively small population of 7,630,605 is one such country. It

As Switzerland is unable to compete globally in the area of inexpensive goods and services including;
toys, manufactured goods, and other products used in mass by today s consumer it is advised that the
nation continue to produce products it currently specializes in along with expanding its current
services to attract foreign investment into the Swiss economy.
Industries of Specialization and Opportunity
As most already know, the Swiss are renowned for their production of high quality chocolates
including those of the Toblerone and Lindt brands. Switzerland has a comparative advantage in the
production of chocolate. By spending one hour producing two pounds of chocolate, it gives up
producing one pound of cheese, whereas, if it spends that hour producing cheese, it gives up two
pounds of chocolate. Thus, the good in which comparative advantage is held is the good that the
country produces most efficiently (chocolate). Therefore, if given a choice between producing two
goods (or services), a country will make the most efficient use of its resources by producing the good
with the lowest opportunity cost, the good in which it holds the comparative advantage, and by trading
for the other good. (Globalization101.org, 2010) While chocolates are one of this country s specialties
it s not the only one. Other areas of specialty already realized and being readily utilized by the Swiss

Through my post secondary education in Electrical Engineering, I hope to make a lot of positive
differences to the Canadian Society. One of them would be in the Energy sector, which would make
two positive differences to the Canadian society. Currently, the energy (electricity generation) sector in
Canada is facing a major crisis, which is the fear of running out of world s natural resources to
produce electricity. Even though the Canadian government is promoting renewable resources, it will
take a long time to establish a network that is completely dependent on renewable resources. In the
meantime, the population of Canada is growing drastically and cities such as Toronto is struggling to

Perhaps my most meaningful extra curricular activity was my time as a writer and photographer for

Resolving The Dilemma Of The Absurd
Amir Rezvani Mr. Pyle Period 6 AP Literature and Composition May 1, 2016 Resolving the Dilemma
of the Absurd The human tendency to seek meaning in life is invariably at odds with the human
inability to find any. How, then, should humans attempt to resolve this dissonance? In The Stranger,
Camus addresses this question by developing the character of Meursault, the novel s narrator and
protagonist (and, one could argue, anti hero) who is sentenced to execution for killing another man. At
the start of the novel, Meursault merely feels indifferent about his bland existence and the people and
events around him. As the story progresses, however, Meursault transforms into a man who
understands the source of that indifference and who is able to not only realize that the world lacks
objective meaning, but, even more importantly, live freely in spite of that uncomfortable truth. It is
only after accepting his fate and the absurdity of the universe that he attains true freedom and a state
of serenity, in contrast with the dejected state of a suicidal nihilist and the anxious plight of an
individual searching for nonexistent meaning. Meursault s philosophical evolution dramatizes the
essence of Camus contention that in order to surmount the dilemma of the absurd and achieve
freedom, one must recognize the objective meaninglessness of life and then proceed to create one s
own personal meaning by living in spite of this absurdity, while recognizing the artificial nature of that

Analysis Of The Novel Perfume Help Grenouille
Grenouille is a character born destined to be a murderer, but he alone can t accomplish it. Süskind
offers him a plethora of characters that can help him in his journey to becoming a master murderer and
perfume maker. The use of minor characters in the novel Perfume help Grenouille grow and develop
into a murderer, like a tick, he leeches off others and uses them for personal growth. Grenouille
absorbs the traits of his host, using them to keep him alive, they assist him in fitting into society, no
longer making him a noticeable monster and they are what motivates him to complete his goals.

This quote shows his initial weakness and how without the host, he wouldn t be able to survive. And
like the tick that abandons its host when it takes all it can, Grenouille leaves his host, Madame
Gaillard, leaving her to the cruel fate of a terrible death, a motif of those who encounter Grenouille,
There they put her in a ward populated with hundreds of the mortally ill, the same ward in which her
husband had died, laid her in a bed shared with total strangers, pressing body upon body with five
other women, and for three long weeks let her die in public view. (Süskind, 13) Süskind s minor
characters in Perfume assist Grenouille in his knowledge of creating perfume and fitting into society,
allowing him to develop into his murderous role. Baldini takes Grenouille under his wing and teaches
him the way of making perfumes But Grenouille, too, profited from the disciplined procedures Baldini
forced upon him. (Süskind, 38) Grenouille uses his tick like properties and absorbs knowledge from
his hosts. He here, can take knowledge that Baldini offers to him and uses it for his own personal
gains. The foundation of perfuming knowledge given by Baldini allows Grenouille to grow in strength
in his ability to make these perfumes, bringing him closer to his true identity as a murderer. The help

Critical Analysis of Giorgio Agamben Essays
In, Life That Does Not Deserve to Live, Giorgio Agamben aims to expand on Michel Foucault s
concepts of biopower and biopolitics , to express the way in which the state has power over society in
the way that bare life is produced. He uses the Latin term homo sacer literally translated to sacred man
to describe a life which can be eliminated without punishment , one that possesses no value to the state
and therefore can be terminated without the act being considered a crime. Examples of this can be
seen in people who experience brain death and subsequently have their life support machine switched
off, and in people in prison camps such as Guantanamo Bay. However, the biggest example we are
given of bare life, is in the Jewish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, Agamben s thesis that the camp can be used as a paradigm for the line that every society
sets between bare life and political existence is in itself an important argument. However, he only
concentrates on the separation of the two, rather than expanding his argument to illustrate the
divisions that are clearly prevalent within each group.
Agamben also uses the biopolitics of the Nazi regime to draw a parallel to liberal, democratic societies
in the sense that it shows that all societies have the same line in which, when crossed, one becomes
homo sacer. This is the state of exception , the point in which the sovereign decides, Which life may
be killed without the commission of a homicide . Agamben leads the argument for the state of
exception onto one regarding euthanasia. This can be seen as the sovereign uses the state of exception
to deem brain dead people as bare life . They possess no economic merit to the state and so their life is
devoid of value . The sovereign as a person, who holds the power to decide whether a person is bios or
zoe , falls to people who preside over the health of the individual, he/she can be a doctor, a
psychiatrist, and a jurist . As these represent the affluent class of society, this shows that biopower is
inevitably connected to economic worth. The Nazi regime, according to Agamben, is the first instance
in which politics and medicine have ever

Why Might Different Pressure Groups Use Different Methods...
Why might different pressure groups use different methods in their methods in their attempts to
influence government .
Pressure groups are groups of like minded individuals who come together on the basis of shared
interests or a commonly held cause in order to put pressure on policy makers at Westminster and
beyond. Pressure groups are significantly more numerous than political parties because whereas the
parties tend to aggregate and accommodate a wide range of views in an effort to see their candidate
elected to public off, pressure groups have a tendency to fragment opinion. Recent years have seen the
emergence of looser social movements and more focused single issue groups, replacing larger, more
traditional groups as a fundamental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It starts from the premise that conventional methods of influencing policy are flawed and that more
visible and direct protests, perhaps even involving civil disobedience, illegal methods or violence,
may offer the best opportunity of success because they attract media attention, raise public awareness
and force politicians to sit up and listen.
Although many feel that direction action techniques provide the most immediate way of articulating
their views and achieving tangible results, critics argue that the rise in single issue, direct action
politics undermines our system of representative democracy. This is because such campaigns prevent
governments from implementing their programmes and from pursuing policies that address the bigger
picture.
The scope and scale of direct action campaigns has increased significantly since the 1990s. The anti
roads protests of recent years, the campaign against live animal exports, the campaigns against fox
hunting and vivisection, the fuel protests and the campaigns by groups such as Fathers4Justice and
environmental groups such as Greenpeace and Plane Stupid have al been seen to have had some effect
on policy or opinion.
Precisely how effective individual pressure groups are is often hard to gauge not least because many
core insider groups prefer not to publicise the extent of their influence, for fear of alienating the
government and losing their privileged status. Similarly, while high profile

DOST PTRI turned difficult to remove stains from these husks into a textile dye called coconut pink.
They found out that young coconut husk extract imparts red to maroon color on silk, piña seda and
piña while it produces an old rose color on cotton. They also established colorfastness, laundering and
light ratings of the dyed materials and found these to be satisfactory for all these types. Coconut husks
potential to impart red color comes as a necessary indulgence for textile manufacturers who use in
great quantities the non colorfast red dye from sibukao (Caesalpinnia sappan). The textile institute s
research study revealed that young coconut husks sourced from different locations produce varying
shades of red. This required thus hue and color tint matching capabilities and adjustments in the
dyeing parameters. In addition, DOST PTRI found that coconuts from high elevations yield almost no
color compared with coconuts from coastals and low lying areas. This new use for young coconut
husks holds promise for additional income for farmers. Likewise, the new technique s requirement for
compulsory chopping of husks before extraction facilitates rapid decomposition. This reduces the risk

The San Andreas Fault and its role in Plate Tectonics and Earthquake Prediction
The San Andreas Fault is one of the most widely studied faults in the world. Scientists use an array of
methods in collecting data and providing analysis of fault characteristics both past and present.
Presently there are many differing hypothesis and models used to describe crustal movements and
deformation within the Pacific and North American plate boundary. Historical earthquakes along this
fault have proven to be rather large and devastating. This is important since the San Andreas Fault
runs along many highly populated areas throughout Northern and Southern California. Through
further research and analysis of this fault system scientists hope to solve ... Show more content on

The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m. It had a moment magnitude of
6.9, and lasted 15 to 20 seconds. The epicenter was near Loma Prieta, and this earthquake again
caused severe damage to the San Francisco Bay Area, this time claiming 63 lives but almost 4,000
people were injured as a result of the earthquake.
The earthquakes above give a brief glimpse into the importance of analyzing past and present fault
configurations. If scientists could make a breakthrough in this area perhaps we could better predict
earthquake activity and better prepare ourselves if it is deemed a potential disaster is looming.
Methods of Analysis
Scientist are struggling to come up with a widely accepted model that will explain the role of non
vertical strike slip fault segments, crustal movement and deformation within Pacific North American
plate boundary. Multiple methods of analysis are being used; some of which are described below. *
Measurements of Geologic uplift and slip rates in many areas of the San Andreas Fault a detailed
record of strike slip activity is provided. By studying the sediments deposited in a given area and
comparing them to an established age control it is possible to determine the rates and timing of
changes of tectonic deformation. * Velocity Fields and Pole of Rotation Using the Southern California

India s Growth And Deterioration Of Insufficiency
Over the last century China and India has had economic growth. There has been substantial
deterioration in poverty in both poor countries, but much more so in China. However, that economic
growth and deterioration of insufficiency was not spread equally among the lives of the poor
especially as it relates to health. In comparison, the health outcome in China has been much better
than that of India and has been for numerous decades. According to Kanjilal, Mazumdar, Mukherjee,
and Rahman (2010) the lifespan in China had risen in 1975 to a rate that India still had not achieved in
the year 2000; as an example, life expectancy rate at birth in India is currently the same as what China
s was in 1970. Additionally, 46% of the children age three and under in India are underweight, and
only 8% in China; however, for children in India age five and under the mortality rate is more than
two times that of China (Jones, Jones, Perry, Barclay, Jones, 2010).
Both China and India shared comparable strategies as it relates to development and reform. In 1978,
China started reform with a closed non market economy, while India had an open market that was
state controlled until 1980 (Cyril, Oldroyd, Renzaho, 2013). The political settings were quite different
under which reforms were introduced and executed which made the difference in the consequences
amongst the two countries. India is still represented by an open take part multiparty democracy, while
China has an authoritarian one party

The Wealth Of Nations By Adam Smith Essay
In the Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith talks about international trade and subsequent government
policies which became increasingly significant throughout modern history. Protectionism is the term
for economic policies of restraining trade between countries when they want to protect their domestic
industries from foreign competition. Trades nowadays have different forms and methods and involve
more businessmen as well as consumers, which is why trade diplomats are looking to regional
agreements. The US experienced two major economic declines during the 20th century, both of which
had much to do with international trade. Smith mentioned tariffs in the 18th century, but the role and
forms of protectionism have changed across time, so we should know whether the development of
economy should actually be correlated with or decided by the political sector of the society and when
protectionism will benefit or hurt economy.
Main protectionist policies include tariffs, quotas, embargos and voluntary export restraints, and Adam
Smith s idea of absolute advantage has been developed further to explain international trade. In recent
years, protectionism has become closely related to globalization during which the influences of trades
spread almost everywhere, so people insist upon the study of social deformities generated by improper
policies on international trade and the task of pointing them out with a view to remedy. There are
certainly both economic and political purposes of trade

The Correlation between Parental Affection and Future Adult Relationships
A recent study showed that a person s upbringing is the core foundation and influence on future
relationships. According to Currie (as cited in Tayler, 2015) it has been shown that a child s early
encounters shape the brain foundation for future behaviors. Parent to child relationship is the core
foundation in a child s development. (Butcher, R. L., Gersch, 2014) Attachment theorist John Bolby
showed that having emotional relationship with a child s main caregiver is the key foundation to that
child s personality and behavior. (as cited in Butcher, et al. 2014) A warm, positive early relationship
in a child s life leads to them developing strong emotional and social capability, which in turn directs
them into making positive future relationships with others. (Hanko, 2006) Thus, the purpose of the
present study is to establish whether positive, nurturing parental upbringing is related to positive,
successful adult romantic relationship.
Childhood Relationships A large body of research has demonstrated the importance of a strong,
nurturing parental foundation and the benefits it has on future adult companionship. (Hanko,2006 )

Smoking And Smoking
Drugs Numerous drugs are despicable substances in my observance as an adolescent except for
smoking cigarettes. Unfortunately, my parents smoked cigarettes and I started smoking at the young
age of fifteen. All of my friends smoked cigarettes except for one during my adolescent years. I
remember it being portrayed as an acceptable, enjoyable activity to participate with my peers. Many
adolescent kids would stand in front of our house before school started in the morning since we lived
on the corner of the street where the middle school existed. Schoolchildren would offer cigarettes
nearly every day and the first two years of middle school, I did not accept the offers. Regrettably, I did
receive a few cigarettes from them during the ninth grade school year and I started smoking during
middle adolescent. Peer pressure from other teenagers was an influence for the choice to pick up the
terrible habit. Moreover, observing the actions of my parents and other classmates smoke made it
seem intriguing. Moreover, I would purchase packs of cigarettes from money that I made from
babysitting until I started working a regular job. Consequently, social learning by reinforcement of my
behavior is attained by my parents permitting the smoking outside the house. Also, the behavior is the
assimilation of observing how the activities of others are reinforcing which is modeling (Hutchinson,

Part two: Summary of student outcomes
The evaluation of the students work was conducted with the end of year exams in mind. In particular, I
wanted to provide feedback and forward to the students that was targeted towards their essay writing
in the exams at the end of the year. I grouped results from what grades the students gained against the
marking schedule that I developed. Bearing in mind that the sample size was small, most students
attained the merit grade, with the same amount of students being either side of the merit grade with
three respectively. This indicates that the work that is being achieved is at an above average level,
highlighted by no one failing the assessment. The evidence also suggests that the students are on the
way to excellence. With the feed forward being provided there should be a number of those students
who should be attaining excellences in that class at the end of year mock exams.
In terms of the specific feedback forward itself. There were common trends that came through for
each grade. Figure two, outlines some common themes that came across for each student attaining
those grades. For the achieved level the, students were identifying the causes and consequences. The
feedforward for those students is that if they want to attain merits and excellences they need to be
giving more specific detail to accompany their causes and consequences. What that indicates is that I

Medical Malpractice
Medical Malpractice
The doctor patient relationship has been defined differently through the years. In the beginning it
developed into a common calling which meant doctors practiced medicine as a duty to their patients.
Laws were developed to protect patients, therefore doctors used proper care and expert skill. In the
past six centuries, medical malpractice has increased, which lead to revision and addition to the law.
Liability was introduced along with the GIANT of all torts , negligence. Now in today s society, a
doctor s duty is to use reasonable care, skill and judgment in the practice of his/her profession and

In cases like these the doctor is incredibly egotistical and is playing God.
Physicians
who ignore patient requests or fail to ask for consent only build communication barriers and ruin the
profession s reputation. Many people believe doctors are the real victims. They feel doctors are
confined from performing and medical students limit career options in fear of being sued. There are
some illegitimate and ungrateful citizens who insist on filing suits when doctors are not at fault. When
a family member dies, the loss may cause anger and looking for a doctor to sue seems like the right
thing to do. It is human nature to always look for a party at fault in any tragedy. Doctors fears of
malpractice awards also result in bad medical care. New procedures carry a higher risk of harm and
second guessing later, so doctors stick to conventional treatments, even in terminal cases, for fear the
treatment may hasten the patient s death. The opposite is also true, both overtesting and overtreating
are standard methods of beating malpractice suits. Thousands of unneeded surgeries are performed
each year. Expensive technology is regularly misused – CAT scans to diagnose simple headaches, for
example. Also, the few plaintiff s who win unrealistically high awards raise insurance costs for all

the days of the Ancient Egyptian. Ancient Egyptians worshipped gods and goddesses frequently. They

The Egyptians viewed statuettes as symbols of religion with great importance and history. Tombs of
Egyptians and cat cemeteries along the Nile River held many cat mummies. Thebes housed many
important cat tombs. In mountains to the west of the Nile River, the Theban tombs resided. Thebes
had 4 main burial cites that heavily depicted cats. The Bible referred to Thebes as the City of Amun,
which showed that the city majorly impacted the people. Over the course of history, the first cat name
to ever appear occurred in an 11th dynasty tomb. At the feet of a statue of the King of Hana, a title of
Babylonia, overbearingly sat a cat with the name of Bouhaki. The name means something similar to
divine healer of the home. The 18th dynasty emerged as one of the first dynasties to show the tomb
walls of the nobles to depict scenes from everyday life. Pharaohs tomb walls tend to focus more on
religious scenes. As a result, historians understand more about the day to day activities of Ancient
Egyptians through the nobles. Because of the numerous representations of felines on the tomb walls,
one can infer they played an essential role in an Egyptian s life. One specific tomb wall painting
proposes that cats hunted with humans, much like hound dogs, and humans kept them as pets. The
loving function they assumed could possibly attribute to how popular the Egyptians found Bast.

30 November 2014
The mountains of central Appalachia have always been known for, almost exclusively, the booming
coal deposits that inhabit it, as well as the controversy that comes with the industry. The controversy
that involves the wildlife, ecosystems, and residents of the area is one with fine lines, gray areas, and
more than simply a good and evil side. The mountains of Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and
Tennessee are also home to some of the most extensive biodiversity in our country, as well as rich
cultural heritage that extends to the earliest years of our nation. Everything that makes central
Appalachia unique and identifiable is exactly what they might be in jeopardy of losing. Surface
mining began to replace traditional underground mining around WWII (Bozzi 116). Rather than
digging into the mountain to extract the coal, strip mining involves removing the overlying soil and
rock that covers the coal deposits (Lutz 1). It seemed appealing at first because the previous known
dangers of black lung disease and cave ins were now limited with the surface mining method (Bozzi
116). However, surface mining came with it s own problems, a lot of them being more serious and
irreversible than underground mining (Allen 182). This method of surface mining was the spark that
created the trend of mountaintop removal (Bozzi 117). Mountaintop removal is the complete
destruction of the mountain peak in order to reach coal

Competitive Advantages Of Universal Orlando Resorts
Universal Orlando Resort is the one of the top five largest theme parks in the world, coming second
only to Walt Disney World. In 2016, they saw roughly 47.3 million visitors walk through their gates.
They compete directly with Walt Disney World Resorts which is just down the street, in terms of
theme parks. In the beginning, they sought to be an additional theme park in an industry relatively
controlled by one party Disney. As they continued to grow they saw other areas to invest in and

One of Universal s major competitive advantages comes from their ability to license characters,

The Major Causes Of The French Revolution 1789-1799
During the time period 1789 1799, France experienced a revolution, known as the French Revolution.
French citizens, particularly the Third Estate fought for equality and a fresh political landscape. This
revolution altered the economic, social, political, and cultural aspects of France. People often banter
about what was the main factor that triggered the outbreak of the French Revolution. What most
people do not understand is that the Revolution was caused by many different factors. The French
Revolution (1789 1799) was caused by three main factors, which were the ideas formed throughout
the Enlightenment, problems regarding the inequality of the social classes, and a lack of legislative
government. The Ideas brought from the Enlightenment became the most influential in sparking the
French Revolution, as it led to the other causes occurring.
The most influential cause of the French Revolution, were the ideas of the Enlightenment. The

17.5 million Americans are diagnosed with clinical depression every year. It s not just the blues or
some made up disease that many people can just get rid of. It affects your moods, thoughts, body, and
behavior. Researchers believe depression is caused by the two naturally occurring chemical imbalance
of serotonin and norepinephrine. These chemicals are located in the brain and body. Serotonin and
norepinephrine are thought to be associated with mood. There are four types of depression. Those are
mild depression, major depression, situational depression, and seasonal affective depression also
known as the winter blues. It is thought that by the year 2020 depression will be the second largest
killer after heart disease, and studies show that it is a contributing factor to coronary disease. People
who have depression experience some of these signs: sadness all day and feeling that way every day;
Loss of interests or enjoyment in your favorite activities; Feeling emptiness or hopelessness; Fatigue;
Sleeping to much; Change in appetite. Many doctors today are prescribing thousands of prescriptions
in the battle to fight depression. I believe they need to look at other alternatives to fighting depression
first before they so easily reach for that pen and prescription pad. Some of the drugs used to treat
depression are Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, and Cymbalta. Many of these drugs have serious side effects and
have been linked to suicide, violence, psychosis, abnormal

  • 2. Alice Gilbert Monologue A few minutes passed by until Alice was able to speak and let me lead he back to the bedroom. We sat on the end of the bed until 6:30 am while Alice explained to me that it was Mrs. Gilbert on the phone, a co worker at the Elementary School, and the wife of Mr. Gilbert the town s Sherriff. She told Alice that her student Janie Augustine went missing on her way home from school that day. And that a few hours before a camper found her dead in the Red furrow woods, 17 miles away from the Elementary School. And when Alice asked Mrs. Gilbert how Janie died. Mrs. Gilbert choked on her words as she said Janie was murder. She bled out after being hit with an ax in the stomach. I asked more questions I swear, but she said she couldn t say anymore, that she shouldn t have told me anything Alice cried. I tried my best to come up with something to say to her. I ve never been in a situation like this. I just let her cry into her knees again. I walked over to the kitchen and brewed her some tea to help her get back to sleep, but by the time I got back into the room she was already fast asleep, tears still on her cheek. The dog was curled up in the bend of her knees. I set the tea on the nightstand, wiped away her tear and got into bed myself. I last little bit has been so hectic, trying to calm Alice, that I hadn t taken the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was like seeing a flock of seagull viscously race toward some poor kid s dropped ice cream on the beach. A whole bunch of dressy reporters with bright pan suits and round yellow glasses surrounded the building. I managed to push my way through the crowd. I got some nasty glares, but I finally got through the door. But the relief of this small victory was replaced by a series of opposite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Compare And Contrast Classical Conditioning And... 3. To test which rats had received Pavlovian and which, instrumental conditioning would be to perform extinction. Extinction involves repeatedly presenting the conditioned stimulus without the unconditioned stimulus. Extinction that occurs in classical conditioning happens when a conditioned stimulus is no longer paired with an unconditioned stimulus. Therefore, for one group, you would remove the tone. In operant conditioning, the extinction can occur if the trained behavior is no longer reinforced. Thus, for another group, extinguish tone and food. By doing this, I would see that the classically conditioned rat s behavior would decline quicker than the operant conditioned rats. Also, another way to test this is to look at the delay in behaviors. In classically conditioned rats, it uses short delay conditioning in which the conditioned stimulus begins a second or so before the unconditioned stimulus. Thus, if you used long delay conditioning, the classically conditioned rats behavior of turning around to receive the food would slowly decrease. This is because the classically conditioned rats are used to the short delay and when the long delay is used the behavior will slowly decrease. In classically conditioned rats, you would see that the timing of the conditioned response will slowly decrease. With the operant conditioned rats, you would see that their responses will not decrease as quickly as the classically conditioned rats. This is because the operant conditioned rats ... • 4. The Barber Shop He looked at the mess of boxes and lines and saw something that he remembered, the barber shop he thought that s on the next block over. After an hour of slow wandering he finally found the barber shop. He looked at the brightly colored line and started to try to follow it, 5 hours later he was looking up at a big metal building with a small doorbell which hesitantly he pushed. Name and Business said a robotic voice on the other side of the intecom. Br Br Brian, he finally mustered I m here for the competition. Then without a response the door slid open and Brian walked into a cool dimly lit corridor, before reaching a room with several other nervous looking people. After a bit of waiting the President of the United States walked in, Hello. he said aloud Congratulations on completing the first round of the competition. You may be wondering why I m speaking aloud as opposed to through your brains right now. That is because from this moment on you brain transmitters will no longer work, you are now technology free! This has to do with the competition you are competing in, in which i can not release further information until later stages. • 7. Claudio Monteverdi vs. Domenico Scarlatti Essay A comparison of two major Baroque composers: Claudio Monteverdi and Domenico Scarlatti The purpose of this paper is to analyze two psalms by Claudio Giovanni Antonio Monteverdi (1567 1643) and Giovanni Domenico Scarlatti (1685 1757) and compare and contrast the two pieces to find out how music changed throughout the Baroque period. While historians grouped music of the Baroque period together based on certain characteristics, the music did not remain the same throughout the period, as it would not for any other musical time period. Composers from different points in the Baroque period were chosen, but the things the two composers had in common were the country of residence and their nationality. There is octave doubling in the bass, and the fifth occurs often since it was considered to be perfect or somehow godly. What makes this psalm different from Scarlatti s other psalms is that it is the only psalm that exhibits an organized concerto style. This psalm is also written in Latin, and has no indicated dynamics. It begins in D major, and switches to A and E major, and b and a minor throughout the setting, and ends back on D major. The piece does have some ornamentation, consisting of argued trills. The argument comes from odd markings on the original manuscript. Some people feel that the markings were just hastily drawn trills, while others feel they may actually be mordants. In the newest transcription, they have all been transcribed as trills. The main reason for the lack of ornamentation put into the music is an attempt to make the music less frilly. In the Baroque era this tooking away from the sacred message it was supposed to send. While both pieces are a part of each composer s library of sacred music, they are in some respects not very much alike and in others they are very similar. There are the obvious things they have in common such as the fact that they are written in Latin. That is not too surprising considering some churches still used Latin as the primary language in their services, even though in the Baroque period many churches began using the vernacular so the patrons would understand the services. It is shown through speech and actions from the age range of children to elders. When in effect, racism can become violent and flip lives upside down. Fast forward past all the civil rights movements and efforts to halt racism, and today s society still has an abundance of racism. Eradicating racism all together has been the goal since the beginning of time, but I believe to make people aware of actual damage it causes is the best way to advocate how wrong this discrimination is. One of the most impactful program I have seen to spread awareness of racism is the television hit series titled Switched at Birth . During the specific episode, a select group of white students placed cotton balls throughout the lawn of the Black Student Union. Since these said students were white and rich, they got away with it. This lack of punishment from authority for such a horrendous act created an uprising within the Union. Not only did they peacefully protest, but one member went on a hunger strike to gain attention. The school refused to partake in the expulsion of the students and requests of equality from the union, so the one member continued her hunger strike. It allows for the proprietor to be immune from attack by adverse claims and interests in the land, in which he, the proprietor, is registered. This concept is based around the Torrens system in New Zealand, this concept consists of three main principles, the mirror, the curtain and the insurance principles. This essay will discuss the concept of indefeasibility of title, the Torrens system and how these have provided security of title for land owners in New Zealand. I will also report on two significant cases that will illustrate the concept of Indefeasibility of title, they are Frazer v Walker and Efstratiou, Glantschnig and Petrovic v Glatnschnig. Common Law Common law was implemented in New Zealand when the British settlers arrived. It was in accordance with English law and was known as the Deeds system and Act and was replaced by the Torrens system in 1870. Common Law basically stated that no one could confer a better title than the one they have and therefore if a deed was deemed invalid, so too was the title (Hinde 2013). Torrens System The Torrens system is what indefeasibility of title has been built around. It has existed since 1870 and has been refined and is now found in the Land Transfer Act 1952. Before injuring his finger most likely through the use of a chiroplast (an instrument that guides the hands while playing; highly controversial), Schumann was an avid piano player, if not a proper concert pianist and virtuoso[1]. But due to this ailing finger, Schumann had to eventually find other means to support his life. Thankfully for us, he eventually turned to composition, and furthermore, to piano composition. Koßmaly continues by saying that through the truth of description, [and] the naturalness of the coloration Kinderszenen achieves cohesiveness.[7] But also, it is worth noting that the repetition of certain themes, including the melody in the opening line of the cycle from Von fremden Landern und Menschen (Figure 2), also play a role in connecting individual movements despite the stylistic differences between them.[8] [pic] It is this cohesiveness that plays a vital role in the immersion of the listener into the music, and therefore ultimately determined the public success of the piece. Unlike many of Schumann s earlier piano cycles, Kinderszenen received quite a favorable public reception. In fact, it was Schumann s most financially successful collection to date, which was especially important since at that time he was attempting to prove himself both professionally and financially to Friedrich Wieck, Clara s father, so he could marry Clara. This success may have been a result of the differences made between the Kinderszenen and his previous works as outlined above, but perhaps also the favorable reception may have been a result of Schumann s return to simplistic forms and ideas instead of over complicating his ... Alan Axelrod articulates, Objects play a central role in the processes of the Colonial Revival. Similarly, Briann G. It is, in effect, a celebration of material culture as it relates to a larger historical context. Thus, the good in which comparative advantage is held is the good that the country produces most efficiently (chocolate). Resolving The Dilemma Of The Absurd Amir Rezvani Mr. Pyle Period 6 AP Literature and Composition May 1, 2016 Resolving the Dilemma of the Absurd The human tendency to seek meaning in life is invariably at odds with the human inability to find any. How, then, should humans attempt to resolve this dissonance? In The Stranger, Camus addresses this question by developing the character of Meursault, the novel s narrator and protagonist (and, one could argue, anti hero) who is sentenced to execution for killing another man. At the start of the novel, Meursault merely feels indifferent about his bland existence and the people and events around him. As the story progresses, however, Meursault transforms into a man who understands the source of that indifference and who is able to not only realize that the world lacks objective meaning, but, even more importantly, live freely in spite of that uncomfortable truth. It is only after accepting his fate and the absurdity of the universe that he attains true freedom and a state of serenity, in contrast with the dejected state of a suicidal nihilist and the anxious plight of an individual searching for nonexistent meaning. Meursault s philosophical evolution dramatizes the essence of Camus contention that in order to surmount the dilemma of the absurd and achieve freedom, one must recognize the objective meaninglessness of life and then proceed to create one s own personal meaning by living in spite of this absurdity, while recognizing the artificial nature of that ... Critical Analysis of Giorgio Agamben Essays In, Life That Does Not Deserve to Live, Giorgio Agamben aims to expand on Michel Foucault s concepts of biopower and biopolitics , to express the way in which the state has power over society in the way that bare life is produced. He uses the Latin term homo sacer literally translated to sacred man to describe a life which can be eliminated without punishment , one that possesses no value to the state and therefore can be terminated without the act being considered a crime. Therefore, Agamben s thesis that the camp can be used as a paradigm for the line that every society sets between bare life and political existence is in itself an important argument. However, he only concentrates on the separation of the two, rather than expanding his argument to illustrate the divisions that are clearly prevalent within each group. Agamben also uses the biopolitics of the Nazi regime to draw a parallel to liberal, democratic societies in the sense that it shows that all societies have the same line in which, when crossed, one becomes homo sacer. This is the state of exception , the point in which the sovereign decides, Which life may be killed without the commission of a homicide . Agamben leads the argument for the state of exception onto one regarding euthanasia. This can be seen as the sovereign uses the state of exception to deem brain dead people as bare life . They possess no economic merit to the state and so their life is devoid of value . The sovereign as a person, who holds the power to decide whether a person is bios or zoe , falls to people who preside over the health of the individual, he/she can be a doctor, a psychiatrist, and a jurist . As these represent the affluent class of society, this shows that biopower is inevitably connected to economic worth. Pressure groups are groups of like minded individuals who come together on the basis of shared interests or a commonly held cause in order to put pressure on policy makers at Westminster and beyond. Pressure groups are significantly more numerous than political parties because whereas the parties tend to aggregate and accommodate a wide range of views in an effort to see their candidate elected to public off, pressure groups have a tendency to fragment opinion. It starts from the premise that conventional methods of influencing policy are flawed and that more visible and direct protests, perhaps even involving civil disobedience, illegal methods or violence, may offer the best opportunity of success because they attract media attention, raise public awareness and force politicians to sit up and listen. Although many feel that direction action techniques provide the most immediate way of articulating their views and achieving tangible results, critics argue that the rise in single issue, direct action politics undermines our system of representative democracy. This is because such campaigns prevent governments from implementing their programmes and from pursuing policies that address the bigger picture. The scope and scale of direct action campaigns has increased significantly since the 1990s. The anti roads protests of recent years, the campaign against live animal exports, the campaigns against fox hunting and vivisection, the fuel protests and the campaigns by groups such as Fathers4Justice and environmental groups such as Greenpeace and Plane Stupid have al been seen to have had some effect on policy or opinion. Precisely how effective individual pressure groups are is often hard to gauge not least because many core insider groups prefer not to publicise the extent of their influence, for fear of alienating the government and losing their privileged status. The San Andreas Fault and its role in Plate Tectonics and Earthquake Prediction The San Andreas Fault is one of the most widely studied faults in the world. Scientists use an array of methods in collecting data and providing analysis of fault characteristics both past and present. Presently there are many differing hypothesis and models used to describe crustal movements and deformation within the Pacific and North American plate boundary. Historical earthquakes along this fault have proven to be rather large and devastating. This is important since the San Andreas Fault runs along many highly populated areas throughout Northern and Southern California. The earthquakes above give a brief glimpse into the importance of analyzing past and present fault configurations. If scientists could make a breakthrough in this area perhaps we could better predict earthquake activity and better prepare ourselves if it is deemed a potential disaster is looming. • 31. India s Growth And Deterioration Of Insufficiency Over the last century China and India has had economic growth. There has been substantial deterioration in poverty in both poor countries, but much more so in China. However, that economic growth and deterioration of insufficiency was not spread equally among the lives of the poor especially as it relates to health. In comparison, the health outcome in China has been much better than that of India and has been for numerous decades. According to Kanjilal, Mazumdar, Mukherjee, and Rahman (2010) the lifespan in China had risen in 1975 to a rate that India still had not achieved in the year 2000; as an example, life expectancy rate at birth in India is currently the same as what China s was in 1970. Additionally, 46% of the children age three and under in India are underweight, and only 8% in China; however, for children in India age five and under the mortality rate is more than two times that of China (Jones, Jones, Perry, Barclay, Jones, 2010). Both China and India shared comparable strategies as it relates to development and reform. In 1978, China started reform with a closed non market economy, while India had an open market that was state controlled until 1980 (Cyril, Oldroyd, Renzaho, 2013). The political settings were quite different under which reforms were introduced and executed which made the difference in the consequences amongst the two countries. • 32. The Wealth Of Nations By Adam Smith Essay In the Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith talks about international trade and subsequent government policies which became increasingly significant throughout modern history. Protectionism is the term for economic policies of restraining trade between countries when they want to protect their domestic industries from foreign competition. Trades nowadays have different forms and methods and involve more businessmen as well as consumers, which is why trade diplomats are looking to regional agreements. The US experienced two major economic declines during the 20th century, both of which had much to do with international trade. Smith mentioned tariffs in the 18th century, but the role and forms of protectionism have changed across time, so we should know whether the development of economy should actually be correlated with or decided by the political sector of the society and when protectionism will benefit or hurt economy. Main protectionist policies include tariffs, quotas, embargos and voluntary export restraints, and Adam Smith s idea of absolute advantage has been developed further to explain international trade. In recent years, protectionism has become closely related to globalization during which the influences of trades spread almost everywhere, so people insist upon the study of social deformities generated by improper policies on international trade and the task of pointing them out with a view to remedy. There are certainly both economic and political purposes of trade ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Correlation between Parental Affection and Positive Adult Relationships Teena John The University of Texas at Tyler Research Methods, Fall 2016 The Correlation between Parental Affection and Future Adult Relationships A recent study showed that a person s upbringing is the core foundation and influence on future relationships. According to Currie (as cited in Tayler, 2015) it has been shown that a child s early encounters shape the brain foundation for future behaviors. Parent to child relationship is the core foundation in a child s development. (Butcher, R. (as cited in Butcher, et al. 2014) A warm, positive early relationship in a child s life leads to them developing strong emotional and social capability, which in turn directs them into making positive future relationships with others. The Mountains Of Central Appalachia Trent Brown Professor Lautenshlager English 2614 30 November 2014 The mountains of central Appalachia have always been known for, almost exclusively, the booming coal deposits that inhabit it, as well as the controversy that comes with the industry. The controversy that involves the wildlife, ecosystems, and residents of the area is one with fine lines, gray areas, and more than simply a good and evil side. The mountains of Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee are also home to some of the most extensive biodiversity in our country, as well as rich cultural heritage that extends to the earliest years of our nation. Everything that makes central Appalachia unique and identifiable is exactly what they might be in jeopardy of losing. Surface mining began to replace traditional underground mining around WWII (Bozzi 116). Rather than digging into the mountain to extract the coal, strip mining involves removing the overlying soil and rock that covers the coal deposits (Lutz 1). It seemed appealing at first because the previous known dangers of black lung disease and cave ins were now limited with the surface mining method (Bozzi 116). However, surface mining came with it s own problems, a lot of them being more serious and irreversible than underground mining (Allen 182). This method of surface mining was the spark that created the trend of mountaintop removal (Bozzi 117). Mountaintop removal is the complete destruction of the mountain peak in order to reach coal ...
