Conflict Between Barbarism and Reason in Lord of the Flies
William Golding s Lord of the Flies is a carefully constructed fable that was, in Golding s words, an
attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature. (Grigson 189). The novel
shows a group of English boys reverting to savagery on a Pacific island. The book deals with the
conflict between humanity s inner barbarism on one side, and the civilizing influence of reason on the
other.
Each of the two characters I have chosen to contrast and compare is presented in the novel as the most
influential representative of each of the two sides. Jack, the chief of the hunters, representing the
hidden human passion and almost animal cruelty, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Almost too heavy.
Jack grinned back.
Not for the two of us.
Together, joined in effort by the burden, they staggered up the last step of the mountain.
Together, they chanted One!
The first, although hidden conflict between Ralph and Jack, the conflict between the two sides, arises
when Ralph is elected or appointed as the chief, the one who decides things . The reader feels that
Jack s vanity has been hit by the loss.
Ralph counted.
I m the chief then.
The circle of boys broke into applause. Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jack s face
disappeared under a mortification.
Even then the relationship and attitudes of the two boys remain almost the same. They both agree on
the need of fire, on the need of shelters and on the need of meat. Nonetheless, one can feel that after
Ralph had been elected for the chief, the Jack s side of reasons and Ralph s common sense start
separating from each other.
At first Jack and his hunters do what they are asked to, but as time goes on, they start to participate in
different activities and neglect those needed for the sake of the boys salvation.
Ralph spoke.
You let the fire out.
Jack checked, vaguely irritated by this irrelevance but too happy to let it worry him.

An Oligopolistic market: 5
The Case Study 6

Introduction
In today s world the Prisoners Dilemma is a common phenomenon in business, politics and in social
life as well. This paper will analyze a real life example. It will describe the airplane manufacturing
industry and their two giant manufacturers: Airbus and Boeing. The two companies find themselves in
a business environment where both parties take the others decision into consideration and act in
respect of those. The companies can have two choices: to cooperate with each other for higher ...

Therefore they have to keep in mind what the other suspect is thinking.
The rational reasoning of John is the following (the same applies for Bob): If John assumes that Bob
will cooperate (does not confess), then for John the optimal strategy is to confess, because with this
act he would be immediately set free, but if he does not confess then he needs to stay in prison for ½
year. If John assumes that Bob will defect (confess), then also the best choice for John is to confess,
because then he only needs to stay in prison for 5 years, which is less than the 10 years what he would
get if he would not confess (cooperate).
The analysis shows that the dominant strategy for both parties is to confess and therefore they will
both get 5 years. In this case the Nash equilibrium is confessing. On the other hand it results a worse
outcome if they would cooperate (6months instead of 5 years). This is not the Pareto efficient
outcome, in which both parties have the highest payoff possible and one can only achieve higher
payoff by hurting the other. In the Prisoners Dilemma the Nash equilibrium does not equal with the
Pareto efficiency.
An Oligopolistic market:
The definition of an oligopoly is the market condition in which the production of identical or similar
products is done by a small number of big firms. Oligopolies can be categorized in to two types:
homogenous oligopolies where the product is exactly the same (e.g.: steel production)

Critical Evaluation of Accounting Cycle
INTRODUCTION:
An Organization often needs a way to keep score when conducting business operations. Accounting
usually fits this need because it allows create to companies financial reports that can be compared with
other companies or an industry standard. Business owners and managers also use accounting to review
the efficiency of operations. This information may help owners and managers make business decisions
and improve the company s profitability.

Financial statements are the most important reports of a business. These statements are prepared from
the information in the trial balance. The purpose of these statements is to show the reader the financial
position, financial performance and cash flows of a business, as well as other useful information
concerning the business. Financial statements are usually prepared once a year.
Financial statements consist of (amongst other things) an income statement, statement of changes in
the owner s equity, balance sheet, cash flow statement and (where needed) an auditor s report.
Thus we can say ACCOUNTING CYCLE indicates the technique of preparing financial statement for
the consumption of different stockholders within a given guideline. Accounting Cycle is a Technique:
The accounting cycle begins when business transactions are entered into the journal. Transactions
include all events that impact any of the company s accounts, such as cash on hand, or accounts

which they occur. The second step in the accounting cycle is transferring (posting) journal entries into

How Digestive System Work Together
The digestive system helps the humans break down food and turn it into nutrients. The digestive
system is made up of a lot of different organs such as salivary glands, pharynx, mouth, esophagus,
stomach, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, large intestine, and pancreas. Salivary glands produce
saliva, which keeps the mouth and other parts of the digestive system moist. The pharynx role in the
digestive system is to connect the nose and mouth to the esophagus. The mouth is used for putting in
food and also eating the food. The esophagus has only one function and it is to carry food, saliva, and
liquid. The stomach receives the food from the esophagus and secretes acid and enzymes that digest
food. The liver regulates the composition of blood, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Active Antiretroviral Therapy ( Haart )
Since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) there has been a significant decrease
in the impact of HIV associated comorbidities. The HIV status of patients can present with numerous
oral manifestations, and their implications make it an essential field of study for the general dentist.
However, while the decline of these comorbidities is well documented, the continued prevalence of
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is of notable concern. The primary manifestation of HPV in the oral
cavity presents as the Squamous Papilloma, commonly referred to as the oral wart. Our preconception

cavity (2). The majority of these lesions are associated with varying HPV subtypes and considerable
research has been conducted to identify them. It should be noted that not all squamous papillomas
have a viral etiology; however, this discussion will focus on those that do. Epidemiologically, HPV is
a significant health burden worldwide as well as to the U.S population. Currently, the U.S estimated
incidence of genital HPV is 5.5 million, and the prevalence of current infection is estimated at 20
million (3). Assessment of HPV infection is accomplished by HPV DNA detection tests through PCR
technique. Data on infection in women is more numerous, due to the availability of standardized
methods of mucosal sampling. Detection is essential in infected patients as the majority of cases can
appear asymptomatic, (especially in men) with no means of detection physically or cytologically. HPV
is a double stranded DNA virus of the papovavirus family containing a single molecule (2). The
various subtypes are antigenically distinct yet still retain common antigenic determinants.
Proliferation of the virus is dependent on the host cell s DNA and occurs in the nuclei of the host s
epithelial cells. Expression of the viral genome comes about due to the host DNA

Leadership Styles Of The Road Management And Authority...
In Chapter 4, Blake and Mouton explain several different leadership styles such as: Impoverished
Management, Middle of the Road Management, Authority Compliance, Country Club Management,
Team Management, Paternalism/Maternalism and Opportunism. After a while of reflection, I
eventually come to the notion that my primary leadership style is the Paternalism/Maternalism, or in
my case Maternalism. Paternalism/Maternalism suggests the leader uses both Country Club
Management and Authority Compliance but does not mix them. This means that they have thoughtful
attention towards the needs of the people to create a comfortable and friendly atmosphere and if need
be, they decide that they will be efficient in their work by disregarding the needs of the people. This
leader acts kindly so that their group is able to accomplish the desired goal. These leaders are often
described as motherly according to their followers, some examples are that they make most of the
decisions, reward loyalty and obedience as well as punishing non cooperation. I believe that I fall into
this category of leadership for many reasons. Although there are some parts of this leadership style
that I do not follow, like, the inability to listen to others ideas and making most of the decisions. I
know that I am pretty open minded when it comes to new ideas and I usually will let people make
decisions for the group if their idea is legitimate and it is appropriate. I actually encourage new ideas

Justice according to you and Homer and Simonedes, is apparently a kind of art of stealing but with the

The treatment of the undocumented workers was extremely poor. Many farm directors broke the
program s contract when it came to the basic necessities that were promised to the braceros. For
example, free hygienic housing was suppose to be provided for the workers but many of them live in
chicken coops, markets, dilapidated bunkhouses, tents, barns, stables and shacks without running
water, sewers, toilets, or any facilities for bathing (Mandeel, pg. 176). In regards to meals, the
agreement was very clear in proclaiming that $1.75 would be removed from the Bracero s pay but the

the fear of their jobs being given to someone else. With both legal and illegal migrant workers
infiltrating in the United States, gave agriculturalist the opportunity to exploit and abuse The Bracero
Program and its workers. In 1951, President Truman s Commision on Migratory Labor reported that
employer abuses and lax enforcement produced deplorable working and living conditions for the
braceros; that the INS had effectively abdicated its border control responsibility. (Calavita, pg. 1901).
Nothing was officially done to ensure that contracts were not broken instead, The Bracero Program
continued to expand as Korean War began to rise but there were revisions. For example, Public Law
78 was passed in 1951 by Congress. This law officially extended The Bracero Program until 1964
which allowed more than 2 million workers to have official contracts. Furthermore, it also faintly
recommended that the agriculturalist have to make a modest effort at luring in legal braceros before

Taser Misuse and Police Use of Force
Introduction
Officers endure about six months of training in the academy. After the academy they continue to train
yearly. Although they train yearly many do not have the training in dealing with people that have
mental health problems. Not being trained properly in the mental health can lead to the misuse of the
officer s weapons. Officers know who not to tase but sometimes have mishaps and tase people who
are pregnant. If needed officers tase people who are on drugs but people who are on drugs have a
much higher chance of death. The misuse of tasers by law enforcement can cause serious injury.

It is safer for the officer to use a taser against a combative suspect rather than using hand to hand

Researchers conducted an analysis of 12 of the largest agencies on the east coast. The analysis
confirms that in those 12 agencies using a taser was safer than using hand to hand combat
(Bulman,2010). Tasers are safe when used on a healthy person. Although they are safe to use on health
person the officer has to follow the guidelines of the manufacture to ensure the safety of the people. If
the person is on stimulant drug while being tased it increases their chance of injury. Those stimulant
drugs include methamphetamine, crack, cocaine, ecstasy, and caffeine. Not all officers are trained to

Essay On What Caused The Stock Market Crash
The stock market crash of 1929 was one of the primary causes of the Great Depression, as reported by
many economists. However, the stock market crash also had underlying causes that could have been
prevented. The crash began on October 24th, 1929 and was considered the most devastating stock
market crash in history, in which over 15 million Americans were unemployed. The causes to blame
for the stock market crash from most to least are as follows: The banks that gave loans, the average
American, wealthy people and businessmen, the Federal Reserve Board, and the government.
If the banks did not lend money to ordinary people, then debt would not even exist and the stock

Wall Street was in fact dominated by wealthy businessmen, many of which who made millions by
solely playing the market. Indeed, people began believing that they would be able to do the same; to
press a button and the stock would go up ten points. These stocks were also manipulated by the
wealthy when they pooled their money into a secret agreement to buy a stock, inflate its price, and sell
it to an unsuspecting public. Again, even though wealthy businessmen did everything in their power to
attract the public, it was the individual s fault for making a poor decision. The second least to blame
for the stock market crash is the Federal Reserve Board. The Board themselves distrusted the boom, as
they saw speculation as risky and dangerous. In fact, the Board had the entire power to ask for
government regulation or control of the market, but they refused to do so because the market was
already too dependent on borrowing money. Without the margin, the market would collapse, and
therefore, there was no point of the Board asking for government regulation since the economy was
ultimately controlled by Americans

Goldman Bridge Fellow Research Paper
For the past five years, I have been a proactive advocate for the safety, security, and the future of
Israel. As a motivated young professional there is no opportunity I seek more than serving as a
Goldman Bridge Fellow. I am interested in the mission of AJC because it will provide me an effective
platform to build relationships with local leaders, diplomats, legislators, and other strategic allies.
Moreover, I would love to contribute to AJC s initiative of Muslim Jewish engagement by acting as a
bridge between communities. While I may not be able to directly control the situation in the Middle

The Beach by Alex Garland Analysis Paper There are some travelers who see a paradise as their final
destination; however, it may end up to be exactly opposite of what a paradise should be. This can be
seen in Alex Garland s The Beach. The novel is about several backpackers, Richard, Francoise, and
Etienne, who come together and travel to an island community, their paradise, within Thailand.
Ultimately, the story portrays the idea of a utopia like society taking a turn for the worst and becoming
a dystopia, something that the backpackers would not have expected. Throughout the story, the theme
of a utopia turning into a dystopia could be seen through symbolism such as the cancer of traveling

Along the way, Richard left behind instructions on how to get to the island for Americans that they

eventually happen on the islands, thus creating a clear image of how the cancer spreads. The spread of
this cancer initially starts when Daffy shares the secret beach with Richard and his friends, who later
shares it with other travelers. By the time they arrive on the island, Richard, Etienne, and Francois
discover that the beach is right next to another island with fields that cultivate marijuana which can
also foreshadows negative events to happen.
For a while life on the island started out perfect, like a true utopian society as Richard states You fish,

world and restart life, put the clock back, I think I d restart it like this. For everyone. (Beach 106.)
However, right when life on the beach paradise started to seem perfect, a chain of unfortunate events
began to occur. A shark attack took place causing the severe injury in one member and the death of
another and after becoming an outcast from the rest of the community, the man who was injured was
later killed. Afterwards, a majority of the travelers in the community ate raw food which led to more

from two major media franchises. Since their inception these two franchises have changed or shaped
our imagination and future. They are Star Wars and Star Trek, both have similarities but even more
differences that will be found in the general ideas, background info, and impacts of real life. From a
first look the two are the same however when looked at closer there general ideas are seen to be quite
different when not generalized. This can be seen with the plots, which can seem like both are about

The first difference is the background history, Star Wars takes place in a distant universe in a galaxy
far far away. That has its own cultures and ideologies based on a mixture of our own. While on the
other spectrum Star Trek is a more realistic future in which the earth has expanded into space with
other galactic civilizations to create a space federation to protect themselves from other united galactic
civilizations, while also exploring the unknown. From that other background comes knowledge and
mystics. The big difference here is that Star Wars has a mystic knowledge that is held by the Jedi and
Sith who have protected the galaxy since the beginning, but in Star Trek all of the knowledge comes
from learning, and has no true mysticism in it. Just following facts and common knowledge to do what
needs to be done. Putting the knowledge and histories difference together that also influences the tools
that both franchises use. Like Star War s history being created from all of the history its tools is also
more imaginary being Lightsabers weapons, planet destroying Deathstars, and Hyperspace
transportation. In reverse like the basis of a futuristic history Star Treks is based on what is possible to

Expanding Our Lunch Period Essay
Expanding our Lunch Period
We re talking about our kids futures. Our schools need to be teaching our kids how to be healthy.
Nadine Burke Harris. Nadine Burke is an American pediatrician. She is the founder and CEO of the
Center for Youth Wellness. This facility focuses on children who have had bad childhood experiences.
Mrs. Harris is an educated woman on what children need to have in order to be healthy so we should
take her advice. A thirty minute lunch period is too short, therefore we should make it longer.
Students cannot finish their lunch in the amount of time we are given which causes us to be wasteful.
Since lunch is only thirty minutes, I do not have enough time to finish my lunch. For example, if I
have a sandwich in my lunch, I end up throwing at least half of it into the garbage. Throwing half of
your lunch out is not only wasting the food, but the money you spent. If my dad knew how much of
my lunch I wasted he would not be happy because he is buying my food. Children in Africa don t have
enough food to nourish their bodies, meanwhile we are wasting perfectly good food that could save a
child s life in need of food. Every 5 seconds a child dies due to hunger and 1.3 billion tons of food is
wasted every year around the globe (in text citation). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

different classes than me so lunch is the only time I get to socialize with them during school.
Socializing with friends at lunch instead of during class will help students focus and get their work

Essay on Collective Bargaining in the Workplace
David Brody argues that the rise of contractual or collective bargaining relationships during the post
WWII era formalized the relationship between employers and unions. The use of collective bargaining
agreements to resolve workplace disputes weakened unions and the power of workers. Other actions,
such as using collection bargaining as a form of substitution for direct action and using it instead of
the strike for grievance and arbitration procedure served , also has weakened the unions and the power
of workers. The rise of contractual or collective bargaining relationships changed the dynamic of the
workplace, shifting the power from the union side to towards the employers. The perspective could

C. Wright Mills defines the meaning of work for white collar workers. A white collar worker is an
educated person who performs non manual, professional, managerial, or administrative work. He
states White Collar stands, after sixty years, as the most comprehensive work that American social
science has produced in the study of the new middle class. classifying white collar workers as the new
middle class full of intellectuals in intermediate positions, to what he describes as the enormous file of
clerical labor. C. Wright Mills connects the meaning of work for white collar workers to the types of
leisure activity they pursue. Modern white collar workers attach an extrinsic value to their wage work
because they work to live. Jobs have lost their intrinsic value due to the emptiness that comes with the
job. For example, white collar workers are subjected to manipulations and control of their superiors
thus in return; they lose their creativity and freedom of action.
White collar workers are a different breed of workers. The results derived from work that modern
white collar workers value includes status, power and wages. At times, these white collar jobs hold no
true meaning to white collar workers rather it the monetary value that drives productivity. This money
is means to a different life outside of work.

Dystopian Places In The Giver
The Giver
Simply, a dystopia is defined as a bad place, a place where no one would want to live, a place in which
one s rights and freedoms would be gone, a place where the environment would be devastated.
Dystopia is created from the Greek prefix dis meaning bad, harsh, or wrong and the Greek root topos
meaning place.
The Giver proves all of these characteristics true. Jonas and his community receive no freedom or
pain. Without pain, the world can not evolve because you can not learn from your mistakes. The
community is dehumanized, but because no one has felt happiness they shall not any what it should
feel like. In The Giver by Lois Lowry the setting is a dystopian based community because citizens live
in a dehumanized state, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jonas is sitting with his family at the dinner table when his sister says something very important. The
text states, I feel sorry for anyone who is in a place where he feels strange and stupid. (Lowry 6). This
quote is very important because it shows that even though she doesn t know it she is starting to realize
people aren t treated right. Jonas and his family have been brainwashed to think that this is how life
should be but they just can t figure it out. Shortly after Jonas had a discussion with his parents whether
they love him, his mom tells him why it is inappropriate to use the word Love . Jonas thinks for a
while then he says, Things could change, Gabe, Jonas went on. Things could be different. I don t know
how, but there must be some way for things to be different. There could be colors. And grandparents,
he added, staring through the dimness toward the ceiling of his sleeping room. And everybody would
have the memories. (Lowry 128). This quotes stood out a lot. Jonas finally realizes how bad people
are treated and he wants to change it for Gabriel. Foreshadowing the end of the book this is the
breaking point where Jonas wants to change life for Gabriel. Jonas realizes his community is far from
perfect. His whole life he believed this was the only way to live, but when he figured out that there
were other ways, he realized how dehumanized his community

Overpopulation Is A Controversial Topic
While there are plenty of infants being born every single day, do you ever wonder how the world will
continue to sustain the growing population? The population of the world is continuing to grow at a
dangerously, increasing rate. There are already at least 6.5 billion people on Earth. According to,

brother died, he thought seeing death was normal for him. He put himself into those dangerous

after similar events where he did not seem to care about what normal was. But Cooper, however, did
not know what that was. Instead the second he found out about the war in Iraq, he was on a plane, not
knowing at all where he would go from there. This I felt was the most crucial part in defining the
direction his life went to. His need to see blood and bodies was becoming into a conflict itself. He
described himself as beastly. He forgot what being normal was. This was rather disturbing, and very
negative direction to where his life was heading. This book is almost to

Sheridan s most notable feature is her constant consideration of the family s reputation and the success

Mrs. Sheridan defines herself and her family through their higher position in the societal hierarchy

The Hound Of The Baskervilles
Sir Arthur Conan Doyles The Hound of the Baskervilles is a mysterious Sherlock Holmes story that is

Hound of the Baskervilles is a great, classic movie that contains an intriguing story, a well rounded

Hidden Biases Of Good People
The ease of modern technology that lets people communicate globally, the access to extraordinary
mobility, and the well roundedness of people today has produced the biggest population in history that
prides itself in being egalitarian and fair minded. Psychologists have found evidence in recent studies
that, although people are not as outwardly racist and discriminatory as they were in the past centuries,
there is an underlying bias that can lead people to act in ways opposing their beliefs. In their book
Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good people, psychologists Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald
explore the ideas of unconscious identity, the judgment and treatment of others based on stereotypes
and the phenomenon of association, and our inability to simply stop being biased as opposed to
outsmarting it.
Children are taught that lying is bad, that telling the truth no matter the consequences will always
outweigh the instant benefit of telling a lie. So we grow up knowing that lying is bad and mostly avoid
lying; however, the psychologists assert that untruths that are somewhere on the spectrum between
totally unconscious and partly conscious, untruths that people tell not to others but at times to
themselves as well are not a rare occurrence (Banaji and Greenwald 21). This idea that our
unconscious mind can also have a completely different identity than the one that we outwardly portray
demonstrates our ability to have preferences and biases that can have detrimental

Dream of the Rood takes on a perspective that is unfamiliar for anyone with knowledge on the
crucifixion of Christ. The narrator emphasizes the loyalty of the cross to Christ and how beautiful it
looks because it is covered in gems. Using his vision as a means to connect to the reader, he takes us

In the Dream, the mention of Satan is not present, but in the film Stevens makes it a point to make
Satan a main character. Moreover, one of the main scenes is Satan speaking to the prophets and

seriously because it is too Hollywood and does not allow for the emotional connection that is seen in

Why Bother By Michael Pollen
In the article, Why Bother written by Michael Pollen, he explains how the environment has gotten
very bad over time. He talks about sustainability, global warming, and the cheap energy mind in his
article. He tells us that we need to act now before the phenomenon gets worse. Have you paid
attention to the environment lately? Have you noticed the rising temperature around the world? Have
you noticed the melting of the ice caps? If you haven t you are about to be in for a surprise. The world
has gotten very bad and we need to act now. There are a lot of causes to the environmental problems.
The main cause are from farmers all around the world. Farmers are a lot more technologically
advanced then what they were 50 years ago compared to now. The problem with the farmers are the
overuse of energy, erosion of the soil, and pollution. The answer to all of these problems is sustainable
agriculture because it is more efficient and better for the environment.
What is sustainable agriculture? Sustainable agriculture is an alternative for solving fundamental and
applied issues related to food production in an ecological way. Sustainable agriculture integrates three
main goals environmental health, economic profitability, and social and economic equity (Kaushik
92). Energy conservation is a huge controversy around the world. There is too much energy being
wasted and people are not caring enough to fix this problem. To fix this problem we need to turn to
renewable energy resources.

enhances the reliability of his speech. He emphasizes that The first and most important task for
developed countries is to hear the immediate needs of the developing world. And let me say, the
United States has listened and we have learned. We understand that your first priority is to lift your
citizens from the poverty so many endure and build strong economies that will assure a better future.

permutated to American Folk Music, in 1985 he said:
The thing about rock n roll is that for me anyway it wasn t enough ... There were great catch phrases
and driving pulse rhythms ... but the songs weren t serious or didn t reflect life in a realistic way. I
knew that when I got into folk music, it was more of a serious type of thing. The songs are filled with
more despair, more sadness, more triumph, more faith in the supernatural, much deeper feelings (Bob
Dylan, 1985) In the pursuit of American Folk music, Bob travelled to New York City in 1961, to

ASSIGNMENT 11
A research conducted to highlight the current methods use to promote the library collection and assess
their effectiveness.
1. INTRODUCTION
Research has been untaken to assess the current methods used to promote the library collection and to
analyse the effectiveness of these methods. The literature has shown that effective promotional
methods can increase efficiency, awareness of and the use of the library s collection. Promotion is one
of the elements in marketing which uses persuasive information that targets potential users, it keeps
the product in the minds of the customer and stimulate the demand for the product. Baker and Wallace

II. Shelf display is effective when it is done using the open faced method however it is challenged by
the availability of space. Despite this, it has proven to be effective because it takes advantage of the
browsers, they have access to a full view of the books which encourages them to open and investigate
the contents.
III. The Bulletin board displays posters and copies of new book covers and provides bibliographic
information on books in the collection. It is effective because it creates an attractive informative
presence.
5.0 THE USE OF ELECTRONIC RESOURCES TO PROMOTE THE COLLECTION
5.1 The e resources remain the least visible of the entire library s collection. According to Hurst Wall
(2005) it is imperative to include their promotion in the library s marketing plan. Promotion heightens
the awareness and the availability of the digital collection. RSS feed to the library s website and a link
on social networks as Face Book and Twitter is used which is a cost effective mean of collection
promotion. The use of technology in promotion is seen in the use of;
5.2 ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOGUE which is a promotional tool for the library collection
for it provides the users with independent access to the collection. It offers the users a means of
searching and browsing the collection to identify material of particular

Reflection On Feminism
This semester has truly been a journey for me and what I find myself identifying feminism as.
Looking back at our first writing assignment and discussing the magnitude of interpretations on what
feminism is and what it stands for, my opinions and views have certainly evolved throughout the
course of the semester. Feminism, in all of its forms and interpretations, is expressed differently to
each person. As for myself, I have never explored the vast variety of feminism until this past fall
semester. From expressing my views from the first assignment, I can clearly say that my opinions
have changed gradually throughout the semester. Three readings from our repertoire have really
shaped my new outlook on feminism and what it holds to be for me. And as this semester in GWSS
1101 comes to a close, I look back on these readings to show how far I have come and the vast
opportunities that I have yet to come in my exploration of feminism. Before I venture off into these
three readings, I want to reflect back on my personal views of feminism at the beginning of the
semester through the What Is Feminism? interview project. Included in the appendix, I have included
the interview questions from my What Is Feminism? project. Throughout the interview project, I
explained that a majority of my beliefs of feminism were hand fed to me by parents and my religion. I
was born and raised on Catholic values, both being educated in them in the church as well as in the
household.

Essay about How Women are Represented in Science Fiction...
How Women are Represented in Science Fiction Films Today
Science fiction films have changed a lot since the days of rubber monsters and fake blood. This is not
only because of the advance in technology but also in the brave character choices directors of films are
now taking. A prime example of this can be seen in T T2 in regards to the character of Sarah Connor.
The representation of women in Science fiction films has changed dramatically the more traditional
feminine role. Representation is the act of representing, or the state of being represented. Fore
instance, something that represents an image or likeness of something. An example of this in T2 is
Sarah Connor who is represented as a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As mentioned Terminator 2 has all of these factors. It is a typical science fiction film with a twist as
there s quite a bit of emotion involved. For example, the relationship between John and his mother and
also John and the Terminator. Moreover it is an action and a thriller too, so it appeals to various
people. The story consists of a shape shifting cyborg which is sent back from the future to kill John
Connor before he can grow up to lead the resistance. John from the future, sends a protector too, he is
programmed to do whatever he can to make sure young John isn t killed or harmed in any way.
Science fiction movies are seen as a brilliant depiction of how life could become. When looking at
modern films such as T2 it is a breath of fresh air to see women depicted in such a masculine way. No
sappy women enter the screen in some sci fi thrillers there is only strong, clever and dominant women
who know how to defend themselves and others.
Sarah Connor had an important role in T2, which impacted and impressed the audience, and allowed
the creators of the film to use her and not a male. Her central role in the narrative was strong and very
active throughout and her masculinity grew along with her active character.
When looking at the genre of science fiction

Plato Improper Lie
[Justice] is normally put into the painful category, of goods which we pursue for the rewards they
bring and in the hope of a good reputation, but which in themselves are to be avoided as unpleasant
[443c]. According to Plato, justice is a way of life where there are two types of falsehoods that both
play a role in creating and maintaining justice. The distinction he makes between beneficial and
improper lies is that a beneficial lie is justifiable because it is for the greater good of keeping justice in
society; an improper lie is one that has a negative effect even though it is attempting to create justice.
To uphold a just city, Plato believes justice highly depends upon the state propagation of these

Acadian Natives
Acadians are the descendants of a group of French speaking settlers who migrated from coastal France
in the late sixteenth century to establish a French colony called Acadia in the maritime provinces of
Canada and part of what is now the state of Maine. Forced out by the British in the mid sixteenth
century, a few settlers remained in Maine, but most resettled in southern Louisiana and are popularly
known as Cajuns.
Before 1713, Acadia was a French colony pioneered mostly by settlers from the coastal provinces of
Brittany, Normandy, Picardy, and Poitou a region that suffered great hardships in the late sixteenth and
early seventeenth centuries. In 1628, famine and plague followed the end of a series of religious wars
between Catholics and Protestants. When social tensions in coastal France ripened, more than 10,000
people left for the colony founded by Samuel Champlain in 1604 known as La Cadie or Acadia. The
area, which included what is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and part of
Maine, was one of the first European colonies in North America. The Company of New France
recruited colonists from coastal France as indentured servants. Fishermen, farmers, and trappers
served for five years to repay the company with their labor for the transportation and materials it had
provided. In the New World, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Karl Popper Science As Falsification Summary
In Karl Popper s paper Science as Falsification , he attempted to explain what exactly separates hard
science from pseudoscience. He came to the conclusion that all theories which are to be deemed
scientific must be falsifiable. In other words, the theory must have the ability to be tested and proven
to be true, and not just deemed to be true because it happens to be true in some instances. Popper s
logic was that the only reason to test a theory was to find a way to deem it untrue, and so theories
which are unable to be tested cannot be considered as science. I believe that this was a great turning
point in the history of science because there were many theories which were considered as scientific
because there was no basis of proving them otherwise. Many people who were studying in certain

Astronomy is concerned with the study of celestial bodies like planets, stars, comets, asteroids, moons,
etc., the physics of these objects, and their relation to each other. Almost all information obtained in
astronomy is through direct observation and mathematical calculations. Any astronomical theory can
be tested by just looking up in the sky with a telescope. Further knowledge can be obtained by
observing the relationships between these bodies and using theories from other branches of science
such as physics and chemistry. Astrology, on the other hand, attempts to use the information observed
from celestial bodies, such as the location of the sun, the moon, stars, and constellations in space, and
their alignment relative to each other, to try to predict and explain things which are happening here on
Earth. Astrologers use things such as the time of one s birth in relation to the position of these objects
as a basis for making predictions about a person s personality traits, things which they may or may not
do, or things which they may

Ethical and Legal Concerns for Emergency Room Physicians...
There are unique ethical and legal obligations of the Emergency Room Physician. Commonly faced
issues include patient dumping , organ donation, and Do Not Resuscitate orders. These issues have
ethical and legal considerations for the Emergency Room Physician in regards to their responsibilities
and actions.
The ethical right for individuals to have access to health care already has a form of legal binding
within the United States as seen in the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. In 1986,
Congress passed the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), which forbids
Medicare participating hospitals from dumping patients out of emergency departments (Pozgar, 2010,
p. 221). The act provides that:
In the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of the EMTALA, therefore, much more than emergency room care is provided regardless of
ability to pay (Menzel, 2011, p. 84).
Hospitals are not only required to care for emergency patients, but they also are required to do so in a
timely fashion (Pozgar, 2010, p. 272). Hospitals are expected to notify specialty on call physicians
when their particular skills are required in the emergency department. An on call physician who fails
to respond to a request to attend a patient can be liable for injuries suffered by the patient because of
his or her failure to respond (Pozgar, 2010, p. 271). Under the doctrine of Respondeat Superior,
hospitals are also liable for the actions of physicians working or on call in their emergency
department.
The need for organ donations creates another ethical dilemma for Emergency Room Physicians.
Obtaining organs from emergency room patients has long been considered off limits in the United
States because of ethical and logistical concerns (Stein, 2010). The shortage of organs available for
transplant has caused many patients die while waiting. A pilot project from the federal government has
begun promoting an alternative that involves surgeons taking organs, within minutes, from patients
whose hearts have stopped beating but who have not been declared brain dead (Stein, 2010). The

Equal Protection Clause
The 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution attempted to guarantee equal protection of the
laws to all people in the jurisdiction of the United States. This means that no person shall be
discriminated under the law. This Equal Protection clause does not require identical treatment in all
circumstances. Equal protection of the laws, like due process, is a constitutional guarantee of fair
treatment for all persons, regardless of sex, race, national origin, religion, or political views. It is
rooted in the truth expressed in the Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal. Many
African Americans believe they were not protected under the Equal Protection clause, because there
was still discrimination based on race under

Conflict Between Barbarism and Reason in Lord of the Flies William Golding s Lord of the Flies is a carefully constructed fable that was, in Golding s words, an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature. (Grigson 189). The novel shows a group of English boys reverting to savagery on a Pacific island. The book deals with the conflict between humanity s inner barbarism on one side, and the civilizing influence of reason on the other. Each of the two characters I have chosen to contrast and compare is presented in the novel as the most influential representative of each of the two sides. The first, although hidden conflict between Ralph and Jack, the conflict between the two sides, arises when Ralph is elected or appointed as the chief, the one who decides things . The reader feels that Jack s vanity has been hit by the loss. Ralph counted. I m the chief then. The circle of boys broke into applause. Even the choir applauded; and the freckles on Jack s face disappeared under a mortification. Even then the relationship and attitudes of the two boys remain almost the same. They both agree on the need of fire, on the need of shelters and on the need of meat. Nonetheless, one can feel that after Ralph had been elected for the chief, the Jack s side of reasons and Ralph s common sense start separating from each other. At first Jack and his hunters do what they are asked to, but as time goes on, they start to participate in different activities and neglect those needed for the sake of the boys salvation.

This paper will analyze a real life example. It will describe the airplane manufacturing industry and their two giant manufacturers: Airbus and Boeing. The rational reasoning of John is the following (the same applies for Bob): If John assumes that Bob will cooperate (does not confess), then for John the optimal strategy is to confess, because with this act he would be immediately set free, but if he does not confess then he needs to stay in prison for ½ year. If John assumes that Bob will defect (confess), then also the best choice for John is to confess, because then he only needs to stay in prison for 5 years, which is less than the 10 years what he would get if he would not confess (cooperate). The analysis shows that the dominant strategy for both parties is to confess and therefore they will both get 5 years. In this case the Nash equilibrium is confessing. On the other hand it results a worse outcome if they would cooperate (6months instead of 5 years). This is not the Pareto efficient outcome, in which both parties have the highest payoff possible and one can only achieve higher payoff by hurting the other. In the Prisoners Dilemma the Nash equilibrium does not equal with the Pareto efficiency. In Chapter 4, Blake and Mouton explain several different leadership styles such as: Impoverished Management, Middle of the Road Management, Authority Compliance, Country Club Management, Team Management, Paternalism/Maternalism and Opportunism. After a while of reflection, I eventually come to the notion that my primary leadership style is the Paternalism/Maternalism, or in my case Maternalism. Paternalism/Maternalism suggests the leader uses both Country Club Management and Authority Compliance but does not mix them. This means that they have thoughtful attention towards the needs of the people to create a comfortable and friendly atmosphere and if need be, they decide that they will be efficient in their work by disregarding the needs of the people. This leader acts kindly so that their group is able to accomplish the desired goal. These leaders are often described as motherly according to their followers, some examples are that they make most of the decisions, reward loyalty and obedience as well as punishing non cooperation. I believe that I fall into this category of leadership for many reasons. Although there are some parts of this leadership style that I do not follow, like, the inability to listen to others ideas and making most of the decisions. The crash began on October 24th, 1929 and was considered the most devastating stock market crash in history, in which over 15 million Americans were unemployed. The causes to blame for the stock market crash from most to least are as follows: The banks that gave loans, the average American, wealthy people and businessmen, the Federal Reserve Board, and the government. If the banks did not lend money to ordinary people, then debt would not even exist and the stock market would not have crashed. Once the stock market crashed, the banks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wall Street was in fact dominated by wealthy businessmen, many of which who made millions by solely playing the market. Indeed, people began believing that they would be able to do the same; to press a button and the stock would go up ten points. These stocks were also manipulated by the wealthy when they pooled their money into a secret agreement to buy a stock, inflate its price, and sell it to an unsuspecting public. Again, even though wealthy businessmen did everything in their power to attract the public, it was the individual s fault for making a poor decision. The second least to blame for the stock market crash is the Federal Reserve Board. The Board themselves distrusted the boom, as they saw speculation as risky and dangerous. In fact, the Board had the entire power to ask for government regulation or control of the market, but they refused to do so because the market was already too dependent on borrowing money. Without the margin, the market would collapse, and therefore, there was no point of the Board asking for government regulation since the economy was ultimately controlled by Americans ... Ultimately, the story portrays the idea of a utopia like society taking a turn for the worst and becoming a dystopia, something that the backpackers would not have expected. The first difference is the background history, Star Wars takes place in a distant universe in a galaxy far far away. That has its own cultures and ideologies based on a mixture of our own. From that other background comes knowledge and mystics. The big difference here is that Star Wars has a mystic knowledge that is held by the Jedi and Sith who have protected the galaxy since the beginning, but in Star Trek all of the knowledge comes from learning, and has no true mysticism in it. Nadine Burke is an American pediatrician. She is the founder and CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness. This facility focuses on children who have had bad childhood experiences. Mrs. Harris is an educated woman on what children need to have in order to be healthy so we should take her advice. A thirty minute lunch period is too short, therefore we should make it longer. Students cannot finish their lunch in the amount of time we are given which causes us to be wasteful. Since lunch is only thirty minutes, I do not have enough time to finish my lunch. For example, if I have a sandwich in my lunch, I end up throwing at least half of it into the garbage. Throwing half of your lunch out is not only wasting the food, but the money you spent. If my dad knew how much of my lunch I wasted he would not be happy because he is buying my food. Children in Africa don t have enough food to nourish their bodies, meanwhile we are wasting perfectly good food that could save a child s life in need of food. It is substantial to note that Mrs. Sheridan begins to initiate Laura into the rites of an upper class women and conveys the social morals and values (Kaya 56) by giving her the task to oversee the workers (336). • 39. Hidden Biases Of Good People The ease of modern technology that lets people communicate globally, the access to extraordinary mobility, and the well roundedness of people today has produced the biggest population in history that prides itself in being egalitarian and fair minded. Psychologists have found evidence in recent studies that, although people are not as outwardly racist and discriminatory as they were in the past centuries, there is an underlying bias that can lead people to act in ways opposing their beliefs. In their book Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good people, psychologists Mahzarin Banaji and Anthony Greenwald explore the ideas of unconscious identity, the judgment and treatment of others based on stereotypes and the phenomenon of association, and our inability to simply stop being biased as opposed to outsmarting it. Children are taught that lying is bad, that telling the truth no matter the consequences will always outweigh the instant benefit of telling a lie. So we grow up knowing that lying is bad and mostly avoid lying; however, the psychologists assert that untruths that are somewhere on the spectrum between totally unconscious and partly conscious, untruths that people tell not to others but at times to themselves as well are not a rare occurrence (Banaji and Greenwald 21). This idea that our unconscious mind can also have a completely different identity than the one that we outwardly portray demonstrates our ability to have preferences and biases that can have detrimental ... Looking back at our first writing assignment and discussing the magnitude of interpretations on what feminism is and what it stands for, my opinions and views have certainly evolved throughout the course of the semester. Feminism, in all of its forms and interpretations, is expressed differently to each person. As for myself, I have never explored the vast variety of feminism until this past fall semester. From expressing my views from the first assignment, I can clearly say that my opinions have changed gradually throughout the semester. Three readings from our repertoire have really shaped my new outlook on feminism and what it holds to be for me. And as this semester in GWSS 1101 comes to a close, I look back on these readings to show how far I have come and the vast opportunities that I have yet to come in my exploration of feminism. Before I venture off into these three readings, I want to reflect back on my personal views of feminism at the beginning of the semester through the What Is Feminism? interview project. Included in the appendix, I have included the interview questions from my What Is Feminism? project. Throughout the interview project, I explained that a majority of my beliefs of feminism were hand fed to me by parents and my religion. Acadian Natives Acadians are the descendants of a group of French speaking settlers who migrated from coastal France in the late sixteenth century to establish a French colony called Acadia in the maritime provinces of Canada and part of what is now the state of Maine. Forced out by the British in the mid sixteenth century, a few settlers remained in Maine, but most resettled in southern Louisiana and are popularly known as Cajuns. Before 1713, Acadia was a French colony pioneered mostly by settlers from the coastal provinces of Brittany, Normandy, Picardy, and Poitou a region that suffered great hardships in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. In 1628, famine and plague followed the end of a series of religious wars between Catholics and Protestants. He came to the conclusion that all theories which are to be deemed scientific must be falsifiable. In other words, the theory must have the ability to be tested and proven to be true, and not just deemed to be true because it happens to be true in some instances. Popper s logic was that the only reason to test a theory was to find a way to deem it untrue, and so theories which are unable to be tested cannot be considered as science. Commonly faced issues include patient dumping , organ donation, and Do Not Resuscitate orders. These issues have ethical and legal considerations for the Emergency Room Physician in regards to their responsibilities and actions. The ethical right for individuals to have access to health care already has a form of legal binding within the United States as seen in the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. In 1986, Congress passed the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA), which forbids Medicare participating hospitals from dumping patients out of emergency departments (Pozgar, 2010, p. 221). Hospitals are not only required to care for emergency patients, but they also are required to do so in a timely fashion (Pozgar, 2010, p. 272). Hospitals are expected to notify specialty on call physicians when their particular skills are required in the emergency department. An on call physician who fails to respond to a request to attend a patient can be liable for injuries suffered by the patient because of his or her failure to respond (Pozgar, 2010, p. 271). Under the doctrine of Respondeat Superior, hospitals are also liable for the actions of physicians working or on call in their emergency department. The need for organ donations creates another ethical dilemma for Emergency Room Physicians. Obtaining organs from emergency room patients has long been considered off limits in the United States because of ethical and logistical concerns (Stein, 2010). The shortage of organs available for transplant has caused many patients die while waiting.
