The Gap Between Advanced Northern Countries And Developing...
The developmental gap between advanced northern countries and developing southern countries has
endured for centuries. The gaps primary cause is a lack of strong stable institutions in developing
countries. The institutional failure is due, at least in part, to colonialism, which allowed for uneven
northern development predicated upon southern subjugation and abuse. Within enslaved colonies, the
colonizers installed poor institutions that would impact the country s ability to later function as a
sovereign nation. Following the end of the colonial era, the developed North would supply policy
recommendations or requirements along side aid to help the South develop. These policies lacked
provisions to improve institutions within developing countries, proving to be monumental barriers for
the South to catch up to the North. In addition, modern protectionist flare ups have stalled global trade
reverting back to bilateral or regional trade agreements that are more harmful for developing
countries. Bad institutions coupled with a lack of trade and investment pose as a further hindrance to
development. The end of the colonial era may have felt like a huge step forward for newly sovereign
nations, but in fact for some it would prove to be just as, or more detrimental than colonialism. Author
Daron Acemoglu offers an institutional hypothesis that essentially points to good institutions as the
catalyst that would eventually lead a country to economic prosperity

application to an organization which is intending to provide health insurance plans to all its
employees. We are formed a team of 6 members to work on this project and divided the work among
ourselves and tried to complete the actual intended function of this application.
There are two types of users Admin and member.Admin is the person of an organization who will be
maintaining this application like adding policy details, adding insurance company details, getting the
employees registered, approving the requests raised by employees to get a health plan and so on.Both
Admin and member need to login into the application to access this web application. They can register
and provide the details to login. They even have the feature to change password, update employee
details and so on.
We have developed the application using C#, .Net for the front end along with HTML and CSS on
Microsoft Visual Studio. We have developed this application following MVC pattern. For the backend
or database related activities we have used SQL Server Management Studio.I have learned using
stored procedures more effectively and writing functions and views in database related operations. We

Neckties Myths
The Funny Stories Of Neckties Rather improbably, perhaps, the necktie may have originated with the
ancient Egyptians. Wrapped around the neck and a long rectangular fabric is hanging on the shoulder.
It is similar to a short shawl and that is the prototype of neckties in the legend. This accessory has very
important implication which represents the wearer s social status in ancient Egypt. Not the ordinary
civilians, only the noble is eligible to wear it. Of ancient Egypt the modern tie is the derivative of a
conceptual product which is a symbol of the feudal system in a sense. Inherited through the necktie
evolution, it represents a clear class differentiation. There are even more stories on the neckties in the
Europe among which the British ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the old legend the wars were frequent in Europe. In 1688, King Louis XIV in France started
the war to Austria. At that time the Austrian soldiers wore a white scarf around the neck as an identity.
The Croatta scarf was a favorite of the king. Louis even created his own scarf and wore it around the
castle. After a while, he was bored by the plain style of Croatta so he began to make a new design for
the scarf, such as adding the embroidery lace and tying a butterfly knot. As Louis set the example by
adopting this accessory, it became all the rage at court. Furthermore, as soon as the trend spread to the
Army, everyone began to follow it. King Louis did a lot for Croatia since an army has Croatta s name.
For the necktie development in the history the promotion by the king Louis is very important. Had
King Louis XIV not embraced this fashion, neckties might not be worn today. The king had no idea
how important his promotion for the modern fashion within next hundreds of years. The Croatta has
been evolved into two categories in the current fashion industry: One is the bow tie from the upward
development and the other is the necktie with the downward

Chemicals Derived rrom Salicylic Acid
The term salicylate refers to any of a group of chemicals that are derived from salicylic acid. The best
known is acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin). Acetylsalicylic acid is metabolized to salicylic acid (salicylate)
after ingestion. Salicylates are nonsteroidal anti inflammatory (NSAI) agents commonly used for their
analgesic and antipyretic properties. They act on the cyclooxygenase enzymes to impair peripheral and
central prostaglandin biosynthesis. (1)
Planned salicylate overdose usually occurs mostly in teenagers and young adults. Overdoses in
children are usually accidental and in the elderly they occur as therapeutic misadventures. (1) First
clinical appearances of acute salicylate poisoning are gastric irritation, vomiting producing metabolic
acidosis, UGI ulceration or bleeding. Stimulation of the respiratory center may produce respiratory
alkalosis and secondary renal bicarbonate wasting, hypokalemia and dehydration.
These metabolic changes finally lead to renal depletion of fluid and electrolytes, hypoglycemia,
hypokalemia and a mixed of respiratory and metabolic alkalosis coupled with metabolic acidosis
which may provoke cardiac dysrhythmias, acute pulmonary edema, renal failure or neurological
injury. (1) (5)
There is no antidote for salicylate poisoning. Treatment is directed toward preventing further intestinal
absorption of the drug, preventing its entry into the CNS, enhancing removal of drug from CNS and
speeding elimination of the drug from the body. (2)

Wal-Mart Phenomenon
The Wal Mart Phenomenon Michael Hancock SOC200: Introduction to Sociology Gary Mayhew
September 18, 2005 The Wal Mart Phenomenon At Wal Mart, everyday low prices is the motto. This
slogan has helped create the largest business in world history with over $245 billion in revenues. It is
actually three times the size of the No. 2 retailer in the world, France s Carrefour. Nearly 138 million
shoppers visit one of the 4,750 Wal Mart retail stores in the United States each week. This trade giant
has eliminated tens of billions of dollars in cost efficiencies out the retail supply chain, passing the
larger part of the savings along to shoppers as bargain prices. As noted in Business Week online
(2003), New England Consulting estimates ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would also be imperative that the survey be performed on stores at different distances from a Wal
Mart store. This evaluation of survey results could then be compared to determine the real effects of
the Wal Mart phenomenon. The quality of jobs and consumer shopping habits affected by Wal Mart
could be determined by a phone or mail survey. This type of survey is inexpensive and could be used
to reach a large number of people, thereby creating accurate results. If the hypothesis is correct, this
type of survey could determine that Wal Mart is reducing the overall earning power of American
workers and shaping the shopping habits of the consumer. A collection of data and research of the
effects on American business and society by Wal Mart is truly needed. On the surface it appears that
the inexpensive products are a plus to the consumer, but the tactics that the retail giant is using appears
to have enduring results for the economy and the society. References Bianco, A. (2003, Oct 6) Is Wal

Rhetorical Analysis Of Games By Steve Johnson
If you put yourself in an environment with lots of different perspectives, you yourself are going to
have better, sharper, more original ideas, stated Steve Johnson in an interview with Salon Media
Group. In a surrounding with many different networks of people, ideas will be enhanced with the
knowledge of other perspectives. Also, the new ideas will encourage debate and conversation. Not
only will other people s views enhance ideas, but also is crucial for writing on a topic. Acknowledging
opposing perspectives will give a writer more authority on the subject being discussed. Also, it gives
the audience an opportunity to respect an author. In Steve Johnson s essay, Games, he builds authority
through the credibility of his background, researching ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Johnson has written similar books to these topics and has done research for them, therefore, he must
have previous knowledge to some extent before writing Games. In the first paragraph Johnson is
already showing he has done his research and writes about Dr. Spock and what he must say about
video games (196). Afterwards, Johnson introduces another source he has studied, this time about
reading, written by Andrew Solomon (197). Both studies Johnson introduces shows he has researched
both video games and reading. Later in his piece, Johnson writes, When I read these ostensibly
positive accounts of video games... (200). Johnson is showing the audience he is analyzing video
games for himself by reading about them and the actual content of the games. Concluding his piece,
he states that video games can be hard (Johnson 201). This statement implies Johnson has played
video games himself, otherwise he would be contradicting himself of what he says in the context. He
talks about the gap between people who have or have not played them. People who have not played
them cannot talk about them coherently (201). Therefore, Johnson must have played video games and
gained a personal experience that makes him qualified to write about this

One By Metallica Essay
The lyrics of the song One by Metallica is a song about the mental state of one who is in a war. It
starts off by describing how the narrator can t seem to tell whether or not what he is experiencing is
reality or a nightmare. The lyrics state for God to wake him up from his nightmare. The lyrics of this
song go back and forth from war to being fed with tubes and living on machines suggesting the
narrator is seriously injured and is wanting to die and wake up from the nightmare he is in. It is
common for injuries to occur in warfare and in this case, the narrator is suffering from extreme pain
and living off machines. It also states at the end that a landmine is what took his arms, legs, speech,

I had the typical signs of hating myself and feeling worthless. It was very hard to continue living on
like everyone else since I was fighting myself internally all day long. I m sure a lot of people go
through some sort of depression in their lives. Luckily, I could say that I didn t have severe depression
like many others suffer from. However, I did struggle every day to stay sane. It was very hard to stay
focused in school and to socialize with friends and family. Eventually, I did get past my depression. I
realized one day how bad my depression had gotten and I started to become aware that I needed to
change. While it may not have worked for a lot of people, I healed myself. I started to appreciate
everything in life that we take for granted. Like waking up healthy and not having to worry about
bombs or landmines like some do in countries like Syria. I started to understand that I have a better
life than a huge chunk of others around the world. Being able to be born in a country like ours,
experiencing the things I have experienced, I started to tell myself I have no excuse to be sad about
anything, I did not have that right when so many others have so much worse than me. Anyways what I
can say about battling my internal war is that it was a version of Hell that I hope to never have to go

How Futures Markets Reflect People s Expectation About...
Futures markets reflect people s expectation about future prices. However, it has been shown that
models based on single oil futures spot spread tend to be less accurate in the mean squared prediction
error sense than forecasts from simpler models such as no change model or futures forecast (forecast
the h month ahead spot price as the current futures price that matures in h month). This paper shows
that the term structure of oil futures prices also fails to improve on the forecast performance of the
simple no change forecast. Moreover, scenario analysis shows that the conclusion is insensitive to the
length of the initial estimation window or the length of the sample period.
JEL Code: C53, Q47
Key Words: Oil price, futures, forecast, term structure, spread.
section{Introduction}
The forecast of the spot prices of commodities such as crude oil has played an important role in
modern economics and finance. Accurate predictions of crude oil price will provide tremendous help
since they are also often used as inputs by policymakers such as governors of the central banks for the
decision of monetary policies. Since oil futures prices reflect the prices that both the buyer and seller
agree will be the price of oil upon delivery, they provided information about investor s expectations
about the future price of oil. Recently people have found out that using the oil futures spot spread can
help predict future oil spot prices under certain samples (Wu and McCallum, 2005),

Ap Language Class Structure
As a junior, I enrolled in an AP Language course. Going into the course I was aware of the research
paper I would have to write at the end of the year. As a junior in high school, a six page research paper
was nowhere near a simple task. Being that my public high school was new to the AP system, the
teachers were learning as well as the students; enforcing students to work twice as hard outside of the
classroom. Although I was a junior and only two years away from being an independent college
student, I was still attached and only aware of how to write using the five paragraph essay guidelines.
Immediately when assigned my first six page research paper, thoughts of how this would even be
possible when I have not written more than five paragraph? Because I had only written based on
structure my entire life, I began researching different structures on how I could write this six page
paper, completely being blinded by the fact that a structure was not necessary. The required length of
the paper was not the only difficult factor of the assignment. My teacher was an open minded and
intelligent individual. She studied at UC Berkeley and was an Atheist. She regularly looked at all
issues she discussed with us from all different perspectives and was not one to voice her opinion,
especially over ours. The conversations in the classroom were often lively, ... Show more content on

Exploring The Effectiveness Of Team Building
Throughout the Management 345 Course there have been many opportunities to explore the
effectiveness of team building, both in theory and practical application. Within our community project
team, we were challenged with working through the logical and creative problem solving techniques
to come up with our successful solutions. The course work and team project has helped gain a good
perspective from within as team member but, more importantly a gained understanding of how
behaviors and personality traits affect team dynamics and overall team effectiveness. Learning,
understanding and applying the key concepts and theories to our team and team behavior will help to
directly apply these lessons throughout the rest of my personal and professional life.
Key Take Aways
Team Identity
Group identity is the extent to which people feel their group membership is an important part of who
they are (Thompson, 2014, p. 105). One s identity is important, when we identify ourselves with what
we believe in, it influences our behavior. When we identify ourselves with a group and the group s
identity this also influences us, the way we behave and act reflect who we are. If we are part of the
team and the group identity we able to be more efficient and focused on the team goals vs. being
judgmental of other team members. Group identity can create a positive social identity for both the
team and the team members. Additionally, group identity tends to have better buy in of the team s

Essay on Good vs. Evil in Steinbeck s East of Eden
A theme is a unifying or dominant idea in a literary work. Steinbeck described the competition of
good versus evil as the story of mankind itself. He believes that every generation to come since Adam
and Eve will now be immersed with the struggle of good and evil due to Eve s curiosity that led to sin,
eventually banning both her and Adam from the Garden of Eden. In East of Eden, Steinbeck makes
the contest of good versus evil apparent through his contrasting description of the setting, the
characters opposing personalities, and society s changing morals. To show that man is surrounded by
good and evil no matter where they are, Steinbeck describes the setting in a contrasting way to
represent the good side and the bad side of nature. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In describing the land, Steinbeck is showing humanity is continuously immersed in a struggle of good
versus evil; he suggests the way in which this sense of opposed absolutes rises from deep within man,
representing something profound and inevitable in human consciousness (Owens). The main way in
which Steinbeck shows the theme of good versus evil is the character s divergent personalities. The
main good character of the novel is Samuel Hamilton, a poor farmer who raised nine children on little
to no income. Despite the fact that his customers do not pay him money for his labor blacksmithing,
well digging he is still gracious and kind to everyone he meets. He sees through Cathy s façade to the
true core of her evilness. Cathy Ames is the evil character who has no conscious as she uses Adam
Trask (protagonist) to move to Salinas after sleeping with his brother, trying to abort her babies,
shooting Adam in the shoulder and leaving him alone with their twin sons, and secretly killing a
brothel owner so she can take control. She is described as being as close to pure evil as one is likely to
get this side of hell (Aubrey). Adam is always struggling between these two characters in the novel,
representing his personal struggle with good versus evil. He is enamored with Cathy, or who he thinks
Cathy is, and is left in an extreme state of depression upon

Development of the American Constitution Essay
The Constitution was originally constructed as a document to unify a young nation, ensure rights, and
prevent one man from having too much power. In order for the Constitution to be ratified, it evaded
addressing divisive issues between the north and south, as to keep both sections of the union in favor
of the Constitution. As the nation as well as its dependency on slavery grew, the ambiguity of the
Constitution gave way to tension on three major issues between the abolitionist north and the pro
slavery south what the protocol should be pertaining to runaway slaves, the slave status of newly
formed states, and could states legally and peacefully secede from the Union. Because of the

Clay presented the compromise of 1850, on January 29th, after mulling over the compromise for eight
months. The compromise stated that Texas would surrender the disputed land claims and in return
would receive ten million dollars from the government to pay the debt owed to Mexico. The territories
of New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah would be created but with no mention as to their
preference towards being a free state or a slave state. Washington D.C. would discontinue slave trade,
but still allow the owning of slaves. California would be added as a free state, and to appease the slave
states, who would oppose the majority in Congress being free states, the Fugitive Slave Act was
added. The Fugitive Slave Act was the most divisive out of all the components of the Compromise of
1850. This act required all citizens to help return runaway slaves. The new law created a force of
federal commissioners given the power to follow the fugitive slave into any state and return them to
their owners. There was no limit meaning slaves who had been free many years could be returned.
Citizens who refused to help in the pursuit of the fugitives received time in prison as well as fines. The
captured slave could not testify on their own behalf and did not have the right to a jury trial. Even if

The current essay focuses on two different therapeutic techniques, Acceptance and Commitment
Therapy and Solution Focused Brief Therapy. The initial component of the essay outlines the
therapeutic orientations of both approaches; then, the different approaches are related to a case study
of a young lady called Linda who is seeking counseling due to feelings of hopelessness. The essay is

SFBT holds that language and words are very important, and that helping clients talk about their lives
in more useful language can lead to positive change. One of the major differences between SFBT and
other psychotherapies is that while SFBT acknowledged that clients tend to come to therapy to talk
about their problems, the SFBT will not encourage them to talk about their problems, but rather to talk
about solutions (Rafter, Evans and Iveson, 2012).
One of the central assumptions of SFBT is that the client will choose the goals for therapy and that the
client themselves have resources which they will use in making changes (Macdonald, 2011). The
therapeutic conversation aims at restoring hope and self esteem, while reducing anxiety to a point
where people become able to think more widely and creatively about solutions. SFBT holds that high
anxiety can restrict cognition and attention to the surrounding environment and that, by reducing
anxiety, it would allow for wider thinking about possible approaches to problems, as well as
mobilizing their existing strengths and resources to address their desired goals (Rafter et al, 2012).

British Diplomacy in Palestine Essay
I believe that British diplomacy in Palestine was consistently indecisive and hypocritical but at the
same time the British wanted to keep their hands in Palestine s economy and goods. The reasoning
behind this statement is because of the events that played out during the Hussein McMahon
correspondence, the Sykes Picot agreement, and the Balfour declaration.
First, the Hussein McMahon correspondence was a long drawn out exchange of letters between the
Sharif of Mecca Hussein bin Ali and British High Commissioner Sir Henry McMahon dealing with
the future political status of the Ottoman Empire. The Arab s were planning on revolting against the
Ottoman Empire because of the promise that after the war was over Britain would recognize the ...

The Sykes Picot agreement was a secret agreement between Britain and the French with the Russians
in agreement of the arrangement. The agreement would separate areas of influence between France
England, and Russia over West Asia and parts of the Middle East. Britain was given control of
territories of Jordan and coastal land touching the Mediterranean allowing access to more trade and
influence. France was allowed parts of Syria, Lebanon and parts of Iraq. Britain s negotiator was Sir
Mark Sykes, a member or parliament, and France s representative was Francois Georges Picot a
French diplomat who had served as consul general in Beirut. Part of the agreement would supposedly
allow Arab nations to rule themselves with sovereignty; however, probable imperialist intentions in
the west left Arab leaders highly skeptical that the agreement would allow true autonomy to Arab
states.
Third, the Balfour declaration was a letter from the Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour and the
letter clearly stated by the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland and it said that Palestine was
the national home of the Jewish people and not of the Palestinian people. Nevertheless, the declaration
did state that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non

The Office of Warren G. Harding
In the early 1920s, after facing the struggles of World War I, the Palmer Raids, and Wilson s fall,
Americans craved stability. Republicans were promising a return to the settled country we once were,
and this eventually led to the election of Warren G. Harding, the first Republican president in the
decade. One of his first acts as president was allowing people to walk on the White House garden,
reassuring the citizens that their government was returning to them after a time of hardship. During his
campaign, Harding called for normalcy , a consistent period of peace and quiet, something that
appealed to Americans after the time of relentless strain. Despite the scandals, President Harding was
successful during his term, as he delivered to the public what he had promised, a return to normalcy
and revival, by lowing income tax for the rich, passing many tariffs, and initiating the Washington
Naval Conference.
Harding listened to the demands of the rich citizens, in terms of taxes. In 1921, he created the Bureau
of the Budget, which provided the government with an accounting of its income, and it eventually
helped in assessing past performances and in planning future government programs. This Bureau also
allowed the government to decide what is best for the citizens and for the economy very easily. It
saved so much money during such a crucial time, as it, for the first time ever, limited government
spending. Additionally, Mellon, Harding s Secretary of Treasure, introduced

Use Of Setting And Symbolism In The Graduate By Mike Nichols
The Graduate by Mike Nichols has many film techniques that the director has place in to the film that
we can see. Mike Nichols has chosen many of techniques that can be picked out throughout the whole
sequence in the beginning of the film. Mike Nichols most noticeable choice to use in his film is the
setting and symbolism during the sequence.
To begin analyzing the setting and symbolism it begins with Ben on an airplane going back to Los
Angeles which shows us that this film will take place at that location but there are many symbolism in
all in this short sequence. First of all as Ben is coming off the airport and onto the moving conveyor
belt with a blank expressionless face. This shows that Ben is lost and confused like a robot coming off

Silverspot Butterfly Essay
The Oregon Silverspot Butterfly the Hookedspur Violet According to the US Fish Wildlife Service,
the Oregon silverspot butterfly (Speyeria zerene hippolyta) was officially declared a threatened
species on October 15, 1980, under the Endangered Species Act (2011). That same year, UNESCO s
Man and the Biosphere program designated Cascade Head as a biosphere reserve (USFS, 2016). The
Oregon silverspot butterfly requires a very specific habitat for their survival, particularly for the
survival of their larvae. The larvae of the Oregon silverspot butterfly only feed on the hookedspur

Essay On Dr. Daniel Williams III
This person over here with the pumpkin on his head is Dr. Daniel H. Williams III. This person (the
REAL one, without the pumpkin) was an amazing scientist, doctor, and role model for anyone. This
man did a lot for science, and not only that, but he allowed African American people to help him in his
hospital, which, back in his day, other Americans didn t do too often.
He was born on January 18, 1856, in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. His father, Daniel H. Williams II,
died when His son was 10. Daniel III was sent to live with his grandparents, and took up shoemaking
as an apprentice. He disliked shoemaking, so he moved back in with his family. He tried to take up

When you think about all of this, you realize that it points to God in multiple ways. First of all,
performing open heart surgery points to God. When you learn to do something great for others, God is

The Three Main Causes Of The Civil War
The North and South citizens were divided because of their huge differences. The tension between
them consisted of having disagreements on slavery, economical and political differences. The hate and
violence against each other later on led to the infamous Civil War. The Civil War, also known as the
War Between States , began in 1861 and lasted for four deadly years. This war of disputes and misery
led to the division of the two nations, the North and the South. The three main causes of the Civil War
between the North and the South were politics, economy, and slavery. The first main cause of the Civil
War was conflict between the North and the South about politics. During the election of 1860,
Abraham Lincoln was a candidate of the North while J.C. Breckinridge was the candidate of the
South. Abraham Lincoln successfully won with 180 electoral votes. This caused tension between the
North and the South because Abraham Lincoln was against the expansion of slavery (Doc N). The
Kansas Nebraska Act is an example of this. The Missouri Compromise Line of 1820 was repealed
when the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1845 was passed. The act organized territories on the principle of
popular sovereignty. This created a lot of stir between the two nations. In a cartoon created by Harry T.
Peters in 1856, it is shown that Preston Brooks, a member of the House of Representatives, attacking
Senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist from Massachusetts, with a cane. This happened after Sumner

A Brief Note On Culture And Everyday Life
Culture and Everyday Life
The term culture itself, is very broad. It is defined in many different ways by many different people
around the world. Culture includes all the aspects from your everyday life. Most people don t know it,
but everything you do is part of your culture; it is a tradition. Culture consists of things such as
clothes, family, food, and religion, all the way to recreation, gender roles, music, and art. However,
when you enter a new type of environment with your own cultural heritage, it forces you to adapt and
change. With this, a person s culture consistently informs the way we view the world and others. This
is especially true when people s cultural traditions are confronted with a new culture and environment.

Aircraft In World War One Essay
At the start of World War One, aircraft were very basic and crude. By the time World War One had
ended, aircraft had become far more sophisticated and had differentiated into fighters, bombers and
long range bombers. The development of aircraft was stimulated by the war s requirements, as was the
way aircraft were actually used. At the start of the war in August 1914, British airmen were part of the
British Army and commissioned officers had army ranks. By the end of the war in November 1918,
the Royal Flying Corps no longer existed and was absorbed into the newly created Royal Air Force.
This had its own command structure away from the army and introduced its own ranks.
The first recorded powered flight was in 1903 when the Wright brothers flew their aircraft. The first

If by chance German and Allied airmen came across one another, aerial combat was crude but deadly.
Pilots flew in cramped cockpits so the carrying of parachutes was impossible even if it had been
allowed. In fact, senior army commanders forbade the carrying of parachutes in case they diluted the
fighting spirits of pilots. Unable to carry a parachute and fearing death by fire, the British ace Mick
Mannock carried a pistol, which he claimed he would use on himself if his aircraft ever caught fire.
As World War One progressed, the military believed that aircraft had a far greater value than just
aerial photography though this aspect of their use became far more sophisticated as the interpretation
of aerial photographs improved. Two entirely different forms of aircraft developed the fighter and the
bomber. By November 1918, there was no comparison between the aircraft that finished the war and
the aircraft that had been at the start. In just four years the changes brought on by war were

Food Is A Way Of Life
Food has essentially become a way of life in our world. People identify by what kind of food they
grew up eating. People from the south feel that barbecue food is a way of life, while people in Italy
can t live without pasta. We can learn a lot about where are ancestors are from when we look at what
kind of food we eat, but we can also see the change that the culture we live in has put upon us. Since
America is this beautiful melting pot of many different cultures we can see the blended in all of us, but
still know our heritage form the secret family recipes we have learned from our parents, and
grandparents. Food in essence is a part of our culture that shows us where we our ancestors are from,
where we currently live, where we grew up, what religion we partake in, and just who we are as
people. When my Grandparents immigrated to America from Italy, they held on tightly to their Italian
culture. One of the things they will not let go of is the prestigious Italian food they grew up having.
They wanted to pass on their love of Italian dishes onto their children, who would then pass it down to
their grandchildren. Make no mistake about it they passed down their extreme love of Italian food
down to us, but due to the fact that we grew up in the heart of Texas our food preferences are a little
different. My brother and I not only love the sweet Italian food we grew up having at grandma s house
growing up, we also love us some Tex Mex food, good barbecue, and Cajun food. This

Second Punic War Essay
The outcome of the second Punic War turned Rome into the single most powerful force in the western
Mediterranean. Indirectly, it also forced Rome to grow politically and militarily as it learned to deal
with acquisitions and powerful opponents beyond the Italian peninsula.
Direct Consequence of the Second Punic War (218 201)
(Morey, 1901a, Par. Battle of Zama and End of the War)
1. Carthage became a dependent state, loosing it s right to declare war without permission of Rome.
2. Carthage lost all lands in Spain, and was split up into the two Roman provinces of Hither and
Farther Spain which was then governed by a Roman praetor.
3. Carthage lost claim to all Mediterranean islands between Carthage and Italy.
4. Carthage was saddled with tribute of 200 talents payable for fifty fifty.
5. Masinissa was recognized as King of Numidia, and became a staunch ally of Rome.
6. Syracuse lost it s independence, and became a part of the Sicilian province.
Indirect Impacts of the War

Solving proportions
Solving Proportions MATT222 Intermediate Algebra A comparison of two numbers is referred to as a
ratio, similar to fractions that can be reduced to lowest terms and then converted into a ratio of
integers. Ratios allow one to compare sizes of two quantities and unit measurements. Any statement
expressing the equality of two ratios is known as a proportion, which is used in numerous formulas in
today s real world settings and applications. Using proportions is an effective way to find solutions by
using the extreme means property or cross multiplying. Extreme means property is simply the end

The Most Spectacular Discovery Of Deinococcus Radiodurans,...
The most spectacular discovery about Deinococcus radiodurans, the first poly extremophile bacterium,
is that it has developed an incredible amount of unexplainable resistance to radiation. It has
remarkable DNA repair mechanisms which cannot be explained just by examining the genome and
research seemingly yields no concrete data regarding what infers the resistivity against ionizing
radiation. It can withstand at least a thousand times more radiation than a human can, in addition to
UV radiation, desiccation, cold and acid. It has no known particular natural habitat as it has been
found across a diverse range of environments, including in the Antarctic dry valleys, an environment
on Earth that s thought to closely resemble that of Mars. The microbe contains 4 10 copies of its
genome and although the radiation causes extensive breaks in the genome, the microbe is able to
utilize unique but poorly understood DNA repair mechanisms that ensure reasonable fidelity. The
genome has been sequenced and a protein has been found within its sequence that confers radiation
resistance, RecA. Researchers are looking to take advantage of this protein by genetically engineering
D. radiodurans to function in environmental clean up, to speed up the process as well as reduce the
costs. Future prospects of this bacteria include additional selective genetic engineering to metabolize a
range of toxic organic compounds and to assess if life is possible in space, specifically on Mars. This

Environmental Sustainability At The World, Massachusetts...
Introduction
Environmental sustainability is a subject that has seen an exponential rise in its importance and
influence since the past few decades. Since 1970, when this topic started gaining wide attention,
several organizations and leaderships have been established that promote environmental sustainability.
These organizations and leaders have been set up on an international, national and even at a local
level. Today, businesses and institutions, whether global or local, have initiatives and goals that they
follow in order to make our environment sustainable. This paper will focus on the efforts of one of the
larger and more popular institutions in the world, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
What is Environmental Sustainability?
Environmental sustainability is ensuring that we maintain the quality of the world we inhabit. This
includes the air that we breathe which is constantly getting polluted by several chemicals discharged
into the environment. It also includes wildlife and vegetation which are at risk due to pollution as well
as the still present frontier attitude. Talking about the future, popular environmental activist David
Suzuki once said, We re in a giant car heading towards a brick wall and everyone s arguing over where
they re going to sit. The world for our future generations does not seem very promising, which is why
environmental sustainability initiatives are all the more important.

The store which is timber framed rather than steel costs 30% more to build than others stores, however
this does not bother Tesco as they know that this will be cost efficient as huge savings will be made on
electricity and water bills. This will be done by using rain water to flush toilets and to wash the cars in
the car wash while the refrigerators will have doors to save energy while also getting rid of harmful
HFC refrigerant gases.
On the Tesco website they claim that their aim is to become a zero carbon business by 2050. Another
sign that they are making forward footsteps to do this was in 2010 when they installed over 500

Acceptable And Unacceptable Behavior When Using Company...
Acceptable Use Policy An acceptable use policy (AUP) is a document that a user has to agree to in
order to access the Internet or a corporate network (Rouse, 2014). AUPs outline what is acceptable
and unacceptable behavior when using company computer and network systems. An acceptable use
policy also outlines the disciplinary actions that will take place when someone violates the policy.
Because the disciplinary process could lead to termination, the policy must be clear and concise
(Johnson Merkow, 2011, p. 38) . An acceptable use policy creates a legal separation between the
employer and the employee (Johnson Merkow, 2011, p. 38). When you sign up with an Internet
service provider (ISP) like AT T, you ll usually be presented with an AUP, which states that you agree
to adhere to certain stipulations. The stipulations include not using the service as part of violating any

anyone who doesn t want to receive it, and not attempting to mail bomb a site with mass amounts of e

Background The Commonwealth has primarily relied on s 51(xxxv) of the Constitution for its

in a 5:2 decision, the High Court found the Act to be valid in is entirety by adopting the object of

and to restrain the over concentration of power. Federal Balance There has been an increasing trend to
expand the Commonwealth s legislative power. This is evident in the WorkChoices case which saw

However, preserving state powers should not be the main priority when interpreting the Constitution
to the extent that the reserved powers doctrine is being revived because this doctrine was rightfully

More than half of infant deaths occur in this area of Brazil. Disease is common between newborns,
particularly in poor areas where basic supplies are lacking. The high infant mortality rates are a direct
reflections of disease, deprived health care, poverty and birth related issues. Poor maternal nutrition as
well as the damaging effects of cigarette smoking contribute to these high rates. The most shared
diseases include diarrhea, pneumonia, respiratory infections, measles, smallpox and fraquenza. (Infant
Morality in Brazil 2014) Zika Virus Zika virus is primarily spread by mosquitoes. Public health

Lou Gehrig s Speech
Before 1939 most people knew Lou Gehrig as a 1st baseman for the New York Yankees (Biography).
He was an outstanding baseball player who fought through a lot of adversity during his years playing
in the MLB. His dedication and loyalty to the game is what made so many people admire him. After
finding out about his crippling disease, he gave a speech that is still talked about to this day. In this
heartfelt speech, Lou Gehrig expressed his feelings about his recent diagnosis that forced him to retire
in order to show how thankful he was even with this tragedy. Living in the shadow of Babe Ruth for
most of his career, Lou Gehrig had to go above and beyond in order to prove himself to the baseball
world. He even wore the number four because it was right after Ruth s , showing that he was always
behind him. Lou did not have the best life growing up but that never stopped his will to succeed. His
batting skills sparked an interest from the Yankees who ended up signing Gehrig s first professional
contract. At this time not many people would have guessed that Lou Gehrig would play on this team
for his whole career, let alone set the record for the most consecutive games played in the MLB.

He uses logic when he states that he is The luckiest man on the face of this earth (Gehrig). This claim
is backed up when he states that he knows this because he played baseball in the MLB for 17 years
and he enjoyed the encouragement of the fans during this time. It emotionally grabbed people s
attention not only because he is going to die but the speech was given in first person with words that
help enhance the feelings he is trying to express. Ethically, Gehrig used his knowledge of the audience
and made himself sound like he is one of them. He is trying to prove that he is just a normal guy who
has to deal with hardship just like everyone else

The Debate Over Abortion

Laws vs. The Right to Life
The debate over abortion has divided Americans into polarized sides since the Supreme Court s 7 2
decision in Roe v. Wade on January 22, 1973, where the Court deemed abortion a fundamental right
under the United States Constitution. The lawsuit began when Norma McCorvey became pregnant
with her third child in 1969 and could not get a legal abortion in Texas. With her attorneys, they filed a
lawsuit. Roe v. Wade reached Supreme Court appeal in 1970 (Rovner). At this time, there were a few
related court cases whose decisions directly affected McCorvey s case. Griswold v. Connecticut
decided that there is a right to privacy in the Constitution. Younger v. Harris decided that federal
courts could not hear civil right cases by a person currently being prosecuted for a matter arising from
that claim. In U.S. v. Vuitch, the court ruled to criminalize abortion with the exception if the mother s
life was endangered and it also labeled abortion as an emergency medical procedure (Masci). These
cases laid out a foundation for McCorvey s attorneys as the rulings were then applied to her case,
benefitting their arguments tremendously.
This official governmental interference allowed for federal action and resulted in legalized abortion
nationwide under the three tiered system regarding the three trimesters in a pregnancy.. However,
despite this landmark decision in U.S.

The Implications Of Oil Trade
Even the important contribution of Chapter 2, the proposed analysis requires a deeper study to
understand the implications related to oil trade and how the expected oil production will be consumed
by the demand. Considering only Canada for all the expected oil production from the Western
provinces doesn t seem enough. To achieve the forecasted production levels, producers of Western
Canadian oil must find a market that values their oil at reasonable price. Without access to seaports,
Alberta and Saskatchewan need to develop their transportation capacity to export this expected
production. The challenge related to the increasing availability of Western Canadian oil and its
distribution to domestic and international markets is imminent. Indeed, uncertainty in oil reserves and
production implies uncertainty on future trade movements, and consequently, on oil corridors. It is
now becoming a political, economic and national security matter that this oil finds access to other
markets and export opportunities (McKenna, 2013). As for their actual markets, maintenance on
existing pipelines and the necessity of upgrading refineries to process this crude oil from Western
Canada create bottlenecks upstream that increase the constraints to allow the expected growth. All
these challenges have economic implications that translate in a price differential. The oil production
surplus and the inability to reach external markets already have negative effects on oil prices for
Western Canadian

I Am A Master s Program At The University Of British...
I began a Master s program at the University of British Columbia School of Population and Public
Health last September. This was a culmination of my desire to understand the connections between
societal issues and life sciences, and to strengthen my problem solving skills in this regard. In the
short time that I have been at the program, I had the chance to understand more about what a career in
clinical trials would entail, and to develop the focus of my research thesis at an advanced level. My
exposure to clinical research has also confirmed my passion for the field, as there are days where I
work all through the night and into the early hours of the morning, sustained by sheer passion. In
consideration of these factors namely my skills, my academic interests and natural proclivities, I have
been inspired to transfer from the Masters to the PhD program. Ultimately, I intend to develop my
skills up to the doctoral level. It therefore makes sense to take on an opportunity to achieve this goal
sooner rather than later. While the Masters program has given me the opportunity to develop my thesis
research aims and interests, the PhD program will afford me the knowledge and hands on experience
to effectively and responsibly execute on my research interests. My research experiences and interests
till date and their impact on my choice to enroll in this program are described in more depth below.
My collective academic and research experiences during my undergraduate and master s

We All Fall Down Critical Analysis
In Robert Cormier s novel, We All Fall Down, is a young adult thriller that explores the evil side of
humanity through a number of corrupt characters. Cormier, to a large extent, accurately depicts
manipulative and dishonest behaviour whilst also showing the evil lurking within the prominent
characters of Harry Flowers, Buddy Walker and Mickey Stallings who showcase the dark side of
humanity. Cormier explores this through Harry Flower s manipulative actions that result in the
suffering of others. Additionally, the constant dishonest behaviour is shown predominantly through the
main protagonist of Buddy Walker, who deceives the one he loves. Cormier continues to depict the
evil lurking in society through the theme of appearance versus reality through the seemingly harmless
character of Mickey Stallings. Cormier successfully depicts manipulative and dishonest behaviour as
well as showing the evil lurking in the dark side of humanity.
In the novel, We All Fall Down, Cormier is able to show the repercussions of manipulative behaviour,
through the character of Harry Flowers. Harry is able to manipulate Buddy s thoughts and actions due
to his vulnerability. Harry fools Buddy into believing that his actions on the night of the trashing were
deceiving, this can be shown with Harry trying to convince Buddy of this, Maybe I was trying to grab
her and save her from falling, Harry said, his voice suddenly mild and reasonable. Maybe it only
looked like I pushed her. What do they

  • 2. The Gap Between Advanced Northern Countries And Developing... The developmental gap between advanced northern countries and developing southern countries has endured for centuries. The gaps primary cause is a lack of strong stable institutions in developing countries. The institutional failure is due, at least in part, to colonialism, which allowed for uneven northern development predicated upon southern subjugation and abuse. Within enslaved colonies, the colonizers installed poor institutions that would impact the country s ability to later function as a sovereign nation. Following the end of the colonial era, the developed North would supply policy recommendations or requirements along side aid to help the South develop. These policies lacked provisions to improve institutions within developing countries, proving to be monumental barriers for the South to catch up to the North. In addition, modern protectionist flare ups have stalled global trade reverting back to bilateral or regional trade agreements that are more harmful for developing countries. Bad institutions coupled with a lack of trade and investment pose as a further hindrance to development. The end of the colonial era may have felt like a huge step forward for newly sovereign nations, but in fact for some it would prove to be just as, or more detrimental than colonialism. Author Daron Acemoglu offers an institutional hypothesis that essentially points to good institutions as the catalyst that would eventually lead a country to economic prosperity ... • 4. Neckties Myths The Funny Stories Of Neckties Rather improbably, perhaps, the necktie may have originated with the ancient Egyptians. Wrapped around the neck and a long rectangular fabric is hanging on the shoulder. It is similar to a short shawl and that is the prototype of neckties in the legend. This accessory has very important implication which represents the wearer s social status in ancient Egypt. Not the ordinary civilians, only the noble is eligible to wear it. Of ancient Egypt the modern tie is the derivative of a conceptual product which is a symbol of the feudal system in a sense. Inherited through the necktie evolution, it represents a clear class differentiation. There are even more stories on the neckties in the Europe among which the British ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the old legend the wars were frequent in Europe. In 1688, King Louis XIV in France started the war to Austria. At that time the Austrian soldiers wore a white scarf around the neck as an identity. The Croatta scarf was a favorite of the king. Louis even created his own scarf and wore it around the castle. After a while, he was bored by the plain style of Croatta so he began to make a new design for the scarf, such as adding the embroidery lace and tying a butterfly knot. As Louis set the example by adopting this accessory, it became all the rage at court. Furthermore, as soon as the trend spread to the Army, everyone began to follow it. King Louis did a lot for Croatia since an army has Croatta s name. For the necktie development in the history the promotion by the king Louis is very important. Had King Louis XIV not embraced this fashion, neckties might not be worn today. The king had no idea how important his promotion for the modern fashion within next hundreds of years. The Croatta has been evolved into two categories in the current fashion industry: One is the bow tie from the upward development and the other is the necktie with the downward ... • 5. Chemicals Derived rrom Salicylic Acid The term salicylate refers to any of a group of chemicals that are derived from salicylic acid. The best known is acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin). Acetylsalicylic acid is metabolized to salicylic acid (salicylate) after ingestion. Salicylates are nonsteroidal anti inflammatory (NSAI) agents commonly used for their analgesic and antipyretic properties. They act on the cyclooxygenase enzymes to impair peripheral and central prostaglandin biosynthesis. (1) Planned salicylate overdose usually occurs mostly in teenagers and young adults. Overdoses in children are usually accidental and in the elderly they occur as therapeutic misadventures. (1) First clinical appearances of acute salicylate poisoning are gastric irritation, vomiting producing metabolic acidosis, UGI ulceration or bleeding. Stimulation of the respiratory center may produce respiratory alkalosis and secondary renal bicarbonate wasting, hypokalemia and dehydration. These metabolic changes finally lead to renal depletion of fluid and electrolytes, hypoglycemia, hypokalemia and a mixed of respiratory and metabolic alkalosis coupled with metabolic acidosis which may provoke cardiac dysrhythmias, acute pulmonary edema, renal failure or neurological injury. (1) (5) There is no antidote for salicylate poisoning. Treatment is directed toward preventing further intestinal absorption of the drug, preventing its entry into the CNS, enhancing removal of drug from CNS and speeding elimination of the drug from the body. This slogan has helped create the largest business in world history with over $245 billion in revenues. It is actually three times the size of the No. 2 retailer in the world, France s Carrefour. Nearly 138 million shoppers visit one of the 4,750 Wal Mart retail stores in the United States each week. It would also be imperative that the survey be performed on stores at different distances from a Wal Mart store. This evaluation of survey results could then be compared to determine the real effects of the Wal Mart phenomenon. The quality of jobs and consumer shopping habits affected by Wal Mart could be determined by a phone or mail survey. This type of survey is inexpensive and could be used to reach a large number of people, thereby creating accurate results. If the hypothesis is correct, this type of survey could determine that Wal Mart is reducing the overall earning power of American workers and shaping the shopping habits of the consumer. A collection of data and research of the effects on American business and society by Wal Mart is truly needed. In a surrounding with many different networks of people, ideas will be enhanced with the knowledge of other perspectives. Also, the new ideas will encourage debate and conversation. Not only will other people s views enhance ideas, but also is crucial for writing on a topic. Acknowledging opposing perspectives will give a writer more authority on the subject being discussed. Afterwards, Johnson introduces another source he has studied, this time about reading, written by Andrew Solomon (197). Both studies Johnson introduces shows he has researched both video games and reading. Later in his piece, Johnson writes, When I read these ostensibly positive accounts of video games... (200). This paper shows that the term structure of oil futures prices also fails to improve on the forecast performance of the simple no change forecast. Since oil futures prices reflect the prices that both the buyer and seller agree will be the price of oil upon delivery, they provided information about investor s expectations about the future price of oil. In East of Eden, Steinbeck makes the contest of good versus evil apparent through his contrasting description of the setting, the characters opposing personalities, and society s changing morals. SFBT holds that language and words are very important, and that helping clients talk about their lives in more useful language can lead to positive change. One of the major differences between SFBT and other psychotherapies is that while SFBT acknowledged that clients tend to come to therapy to talk about their problems, the SFBT will not encourage them to talk about their problems, but rather to talk about solutions (Rafter, Evans and Iveson, 2012). One of the central assumptions of SFBT is that the client will choose the goals for therapy and that the client themselves have resources which they will use in making changes (Macdonald, 2011). The therapeutic conversation aims at restoring hope and self esteem, while reducing anxiety to a point where people become able to think more widely and creatively about solutions. SFBT holds that high anxiety can restrict cognition and attention to the surrounding environment and that, by reducing anxiety, it would allow for wider thinking about possible approaches to problems, as well as mobilizing their existing strengths and resources to address their desired goals (Rafter et al, 2012). The reasoning behind this statement is because of the events that played out during the Hussein McMahon correspondence, the Sykes Picot agreement, and the Balfour declaration. First, the Hussein McMahon correspondence was a long drawn out exchange of letters between the Sharif of Mecca Hussein bin Ali and British High Commissioner Sir Henry McMahon dealing with the future political status of the Ottoman Empire. • 21. The Office of Warren G. Harding In the early 1920s, after facing the struggles of World War I, the Palmer Raids, and Wilson s fall, Americans craved stability. Republicans were promising a return to the settled country we once were, and this eventually led to the election of Warren G. Harding, the first Republican president in the decade. One of his first acts as president was allowing people to walk on the White House garden, reassuring the citizens that their government was returning to them after a time of hardship. During his campaign, Harding called for normalcy , a consistent period of peace and quiet, something that appealed to Americans after the time of relentless strain. Despite the scandals, President Harding was successful during his term, as he delivered to the public what he had promised, a return to normalcy and revival, by lowing income tax for the rich, passing many tariffs, and initiating the Washington Naval Conference. Harding listened to the demands of the rich citizens, in terms of taxes. In 1921, he created the Bureau of the Budget, which provided the government with an accounting of its income, and it eventually helped in assessing past performances and in planning future government programs. This Bureau also allowed the government to decide what is best for the citizens and for the economy very easily. It saved so much money during such a crucial time, as it, for the first time ever, limited government spending. Additionally, Mellon, Harding s Secretary of Treasure, introduced ... The tension between them consisted of having disagreements on slavery, economical and political differences. The hate and violence against each other later on led to the infamous Civil War. The Civil War, also known as the War Between States , began in 1861 and lasted for four deadly years. This war of disputes and misery led to the division of the two nations, the North and the South. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were politics, economy, and slavery. The first main cause of the Civil War was conflict between the North and the South about politics. During the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln was a candidate of the North while J.C. Breckinridge was the candidate of the South. Abraham Lincoln successfully won with 180 electoral votes. This caused tension between the North and the South because Abraham Lincoln was against the expansion of slavery (Doc N). The Kansas Nebraska Act is an example of this. The Missouri Compromise Line of 1820 was repealed when the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1845 was passed. The act organized territories on the principle of popular sovereignty. This created a lot of stir between the two nations. In a cartoon created by Harry T. By the time World War One had ended, aircraft had become far more sophisticated and had differentiated into fighters, bombers and long range bombers. The development of aircraft was stimulated by the war s requirements, as was the way aircraft were actually used. At the start of the war in August 1914, British airmen were part of the British Army and commissioned officers had army ranks. By the end of the war in November 1918, the Royal Flying Corps no longer existed and was absorbed into the newly created Royal Air Force. Unable to carry a parachute and fearing death by fire, the British ace Mick Mannock carried a pistol, which he claimed he would use on himself if his aircraft ever caught fire. • 33. The Most Spectacular Discovery Of Deinococcus Radiodurans,... The most spectacular discovery about Deinococcus radiodurans, the first poly extremophile bacterium, is that it has developed an incredible amount of unexplainable resistance to radiation. It has remarkable DNA repair mechanisms which cannot be explained just by examining the genome and research seemingly yields no concrete data regarding what infers the resistivity against ionizing radiation. It can withstand at least a thousand times more radiation than a human can, in addition to UV radiation, desiccation, cold and acid. It has no known particular natural habitat as it has been found across a diverse range of environments, including in the Antarctic dry valleys, an environment on Earth that s thought to closely resemble that of Mars. The microbe contains 4 10 copies of its genome and although the radiation causes extensive breaks in the genome, the microbe is able to utilize unique but poorly understood DNA repair mechanisms that ensure reasonable fidelity. The genome has been sequenced and a protein has been found within its sequence that confers radiation resistance, RecA. Researchers are looking to take advantage of this protein by genetically engineering D. radiodurans to function in environmental clean up, to speed up the process as well as reduce the costs. Future prospects of this bacteria include additional selective genetic engineering to metabolize a range of toxic organic compounds and to assess if life is possible in space, specifically on Mars. Since 1970, when this topic started gaining wide attention, several organizations and leaderships have been established that promote environmental sustainability. These organizations and leaders have been set up on an international, national and even at a local level. Today, businesses and institutions, whether global or local, have initiatives and goals that they follow in order to make our environment sustainable. This paper will focus on the efforts of one of the larger and more popular institutions in the world, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. What is Environmental Sustainability? Environmental sustainability is ensuring that we maintain the quality of the world we inhabit. This includes the air that we breathe which is constantly getting polluted by several chemicals discharged into the environment. It also includes wildlife and vegetation which are at risk due to pollution as well as the still present frontier attitude. Acceptable Use Policy An acceptable use policy (AUP) is a document that a user has to agree to in order to access the Internet or a corporate network (Rouse, 2014). AUPs outline what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior when using company computer and network systems. An acceptable use policy also outlines the disciplinary actions that will take place when someone violates the policy. Because the disciplinary process could lead to termination, the policy must be clear and concise (Johnson Merkow, 2011, p. 38) . An acceptable use policy creates a legal separation between the employer and the employee (Johnson Merkow, 2011, p. 38). Facts In December 2005, the Howard government enacted the WorkChoices Act in reliance on the corporations power, which affected 85% of employees. The States and trade unions challenged its constitutional validity, however in a 5:2 decision, the High Court found the Act to be valid in is entirety by adopting the object of command test. • 44. The Debate Over Abortion Ashley Aguilera Professor M.M. Eskandari Political Science 101 SBCC April 19, 2015 T/R 11:10 Laws vs. The Right to Life The debate over abortion has divided Americans into polarized sides since the Supreme Court s 7 2 decision in Roe v. Wade on January 22, 1973, where the Court deemed abortion a fundamental right under the United States Constitution. The lawsuit began when Norma McCorvey became pregnant with her third child in 1969 and could not get a legal abortion in Texas. With her attorneys, they filed a lawsuit. Roe v. Wade reached Supreme Court appeal in 1970 (Rovner). At this time, there were a few related court cases whose decisions directly affected McCorvey s case. Griswold v. Connecticut decided that there is a right to privacy in the Constitution. Younger v. Harris decided that federal courts could not hear civil right cases by a person currently being prosecuted for a matter arising from that claim. In U.S. v. Vuitch, the court ruled to criminalize abortion with the exception if the mother s life was endangered and it also labeled abortion as an emergency medical procedure (Masci). These cases laid out a foundation for McCorvey s attorneys as the rulings were then applied to her case, benefitting their arguments tremendously. This official governmental interference allowed for federal action and resulted in legalized abortion nationwide under the three tiered system regarding the three trimesters in a pregnancy.. However, despite this landmark decision in U.S. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Implications Of Oil Trade Even the important contribution of Chapter 2, the proposed analysis requires a deeper study to understand the implications related to oil trade and how the expected oil production will be consumed by the demand. Considering only Canada for all the expected oil production from the Western provinces doesn t seem enough. To achieve the forecasted production levels, producers of Western Canadian oil must find a market that values their oil at reasonable price. Without access to seaports, Alberta and Saskatchewan need to develop their transportation capacity to export this expected production. The challenge related to the increasing availability of Western Canadian oil and its distribution to domestic and international markets is imminent. Indeed, uncertainty in oil reserves and production implies uncertainty on future trade movements, and consequently, on oil corridors. It is now becoming a political, economic and national security matter that this oil finds access to other markets and export opportunities (McKenna, 2013). As for their actual markets, maintenance on existing pipelines and the necessity of upgrading refineries to process this crude oil from Western Canada create bottlenecks upstream that increase the constraints to allow the expected growth. All these challenges have economic implications that translate in a price differential. The oil production surplus and the inability to reach external markets already have negative effects on oil prices for Western Canadian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. I Am A Master s Program At The University Of British... I began a Master s program at the University of British Columbia School of Population and Public Health last September. This was a culmination of my desire to understand the connections between societal issues and life sciences, and to strengthen my problem solving skills in this regard. In the short time that I have been at the program, I had the chance to understand more about what a career in clinical trials would entail, and to develop the focus of my research thesis at an advanced level. My exposure to clinical research has also confirmed my passion for the field, as there are days where I work all through the night and into the early hours of the morning, sustained by sheer passion. In consideration of these factors namely my skills, my academic interests and natural proclivities, I have been inspired to transfer from the Masters to the PhD program. Ultimately, I intend to develop my skills up to the doctoral level. It therefore makes sense to take on an opportunity to achieve this goal sooner rather than later. While the Masters program has given me the opportunity to develop my thesis research aims and interests, the PhD program will afford me the knowledge and hands on experience to effectively and responsibly execute on my research interests. My research experiences and interests till date and their impact on my choice to enroll in this program are described in more depth below. My collective academic and research experiences during my undergraduate and master s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. We All Fall Down Critical Analysis In Robert Cormier s novel, We All Fall Down, is a young adult thriller that explores the evil side of humanity through a number of corrupt characters. Additionally, the constant dishonest behaviour is shown predominantly through the main protagonist of Buddy Walker, who deceives the one he loves. Cormier continues to depict the evil lurking in society through the theme of appearance versus reality through the seemingly harmless character of Mickey Stallings. Cormier successfully depicts manipulative and dishonest behaviour as well as showing the evil lurking in the dark side of humanity. In the novel, We All Fall Down, Cormier is able to show the repercussions of manipulative behaviour, through the character of Harry Flowers. Harry is able to manipulate Buddy s thoughts and actions due to his vulnerability. Harry fools Buddy into believing that his actions on the night of the trashing were deceiving, this can be shown with Harry trying to convince Buddy of this, Maybe I was trying to grab her and save her from falling, Harry said, his voice suddenly mild and reasonable. Maybe it only looked like I pushed her. What do they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
