Prolexus Berhad Financial Statement
Based on the annual report of Prolexus Berhad, we can make a comparison between year 2014 and
2013 by calculate the accounting ratios to access the performance and position of the company. The
ratios are analysed and interpreted in conjunction with financial statements. There are 5 types of ratios
in order to bring out the analysis.
The first type of ratio is profitability. It has 3 category of measurement to bring out the profitability
ratio; Gross profit, net profit and return on capital employed (ROCE). As we can see from the gross
profit of 2014 is 0.67% higher than 2013. Gross profit is the profit of the company that deduct the cost
of goods sold by revenue. This means that the revenue of the company in 2014 is higher and the cost
of goods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Capital structure is the way a company finances its assets. Some may be fully equity financed and
some will be depends on debt. Same with the previous accounting ratios, it also has 2 categories by
measuring the capital structure. From the gearing, we can know that 2014 have a higher percentage of
number compare to 2013. During the year from 2014 to 2013, the percentage has increased from
3.07% to 5.92% which means that the risk of the company to lend to is getting higher and it will be
more risky to invest in. A low geared company with a ratio of 10% would be able to pay off debt
several times over and would be considered low risk by both investors and lenders. Companies with
higher ratios, upwards of 50% for example, represent a greater risk, because even a brief period of
reduced profits or a sudden increase in interest rates could mean bankruptcy and loan default. So, the
company needs to lower the gearing percentage to have a greater financial

Psychological Effects Of Deindividuation
The need to belong is an innate need among humanity. Whether it means joining a group of people
with the same interests, religious beliefs, or ethnicity, people tend to cling to those who relatively have
the same characteristics. This can simply be observed in a high school cafeteria, most notably
separating groups by athletic or academic interests, within these groups, each person is taking action
to be more liked by each of its members. Although a majority of groups are not extremists, the ones
that are, thrive because of social influence and the need to belong. In comparison to the social
psychological perspective of the Nazi regime, members of the Islamic State (IS) are susceptible to
group polarization due to excessive use of social media. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the Nazi regime did not have computers, the social influence of propaganda was still
successful. Propaganda is used as a tool to manipulate and provoke behaviors to further the intentions
of the group. When people already have pre existing beliefs, they are enhanced by propaganda, which
makes it a useful, but dangerous tool when the intentions of the group are to harm those who have
different beliefs. Similar to the Nazis, the intentions of ISIS is to protect the land and, according to the
Quran, only Muslims may live in the caliphate while obeying and promoting their government efforts.
Many online ISIS supporters will never actually come into contact with ISIS soldiers, but the power of
their social media support system is still strong enough to worry the U.S. government that they may
have gained followers who reside on American soil and are a significant threat to national

The Muotte-Bailey Castle
Castles were the core of a society in the Middle Ages, acting as a fort and defense. One of the first
castles meant to as a defense fort was the motte bailey castle, one of the earliest fortifications of the
Middle Ages. The motte and bailey castle date back to the early s, . This design would have the castle
upon an elevated set of land known as the motte. The motte was surrounded by a defensive ditch
which also separated the motte from the palisade, this was known as the bailey. A bridge connected the
motte to the lower bailey, this construct was meant to guarantee that the keep, the stronghold or center
of the kingdom, was harder to get to during invasions. Surrounding the entire kingdom was a wooden
fence that contained a girded and barbed

What Can Maps Tell Us About Spatial Changes Over Time
What can maps tell us about spatial changes over time? Historical maps can help us better understand
the changes we have made overtime to the landscape and possibly, how to better manage these
changes sustainably. Topographical maps can help us envision the changes to the mountains and hills
that we have made and the interactions we have had with our lithosphere and possibly how to better
interact with it.
What information can maps provide about the places in which we live/ study/ work? Maps can
provide information about the places in which we live, study and work due to the representations that
are being made by the author. These places in particular are dependent on the human experiences that

Maps are extremely important for studying the environment because of their significance with time.
They can help explain weather patterns such as water and sun cycles as well understand how these
impact upon our environment. Maps can help us understand how earth s resources are divided
amongst space and how these can be better managed. Finally, maps can help us understand the places
we live in with regards to the physical features which can help us function more effectively.
How does scale influence the information and interpretations we can draw from maps? Map scale has
a major influence on the interpretations being made from maps as the level of detail is important.
Different scale sized maps have different purposes and can be interpreted differently. For example a
small scale map is useful in studying weather patterns and not travel planning. Whereas a large scale

The Arguments Against School Uniforms By Michelle Kouzmine
I hate my uniform! is what every child who is required to wear a uniform would say. What students
don t realize is that there are more pros than cons when it comes to uniforms. Uniforms discipline
students to be more respectful as well as obedient. I believe that uniforms provide students with a
sense of pride, security and focus. In The Arguments Against School Uniforms by Michelle Kouzmine
it states that some people believe school uniforms lower distraction, improve focus, and make the
environment more serious. This is especially true when uniforms are strict and require every student to
follow a school s uniform policy otherwise punishments are issued. Uniforms also prevent social
arguments and statuses. Some schools that don t issue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though self expression may seem good, it can lead to bullying and other social arguments. In the
article What s the point of school uniform by Chloe Spencer, it states that students argue that they lose
their self identity and right to express themselves due to uniforms. Many schools have different
cliques and the root cause of them is self expression. When students express themselves through
clothing, they can be picked on by other students. However, if everyone was dressed in the same type
of clothing, stereotyping would be a difficult task. Non uniform clothing can make students aware of
ones social and economic status. This leads to bullying which can include mental and physical harm.
In the article What s the point of school uniform by Chloe Spencer, it states that nearly 160,000
students miss school every day due to the fear that they will be attacked or be intimidated by other
students. This can be prevented solely by enforcing uniforms in all schools. Not only will uniforms
prevent bullying but will stop the stress of social statuses for

The overall organizational structure of the FedEx Corporation consists of six independent business
units: FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, FedEx Custom Critical, FedEx Trade Networks,

is the parent company of the six independent business units, it still offers strategic leadership at
corporate level and they operate on their own and therefore are solely responsible for their decisions

functional structure. A functional organization is a common type of organizational structure in which
the organization is divided into smaller groups based on specialized functional areas, such as IT,

clear that FedEx also operates under functional departmentalization. Overall, FedEx puts more
emphasis on its greatest asset, its personnel. By creating incentives like career advancement and

He demanded enduring loyalty among customers and customers. CFA s customers spans through the
entire population spectrum, however, it focuses on family. The high expectations by CFA are
obviously because of the need to preserve the founding heritage and culture. As CFA strives to be the
best quick service restaurant , key external factors affect CFA. Demographics is a major threat, this
includes race, age and gender. CFA is family oriented and believes in marriage, but a comment he
made on this issue earned him a bad publicity. However, that created an opportunity in the Christian
community. Despite the harm of this factor, revenue went up same year. His adherence to his
principles proved to people that CFA would not downplay its core values. Another threat are rivalry

Shotguns Vs Guns Research Paper
This week we learned about the different types of firearms actions, differences between rifles and
shotguns, and how to obtain your Federal Firearms License (FFL). Even though it was a basic
overview of how to obtain your Federal Firearms Licenses, the reading did hit several key points. You
can request a packet directly from the Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) by calling, submitting an
online request for an application, or download an application from the ATF website. During the
process of filling out the applications you will need to also get a fingerprint card from your local law
enforcement. You must meet numerous requirements prior to applying for FFL such as: 21 years old or
older, not under indictment, not a felon, not a fugitive of justice, or not an alien just to name a few.

Both are considered long guns because they are shot from the shoulder and held with two hands. One
of the major differences between the two is the barrel. On a rifle the barrel has a thicker wall with a
smaller bore and rifling. Rifling is a thin grove or ridges inside the bore to give a spin on the
projectile, which increases accuracy and distance. Shotgun has a thinner wall with a smooth bore.
Specialty shotguns may have a choke in the bore, which adds a narrowing about 1½ inch from the end
of barrel, to control the shot as it leaves. Another option for a choke is a screw on choke. When using
a screw on choke one must be cautious about using the correct threaded choke, such as a Remington
choke with a Remington barrel. A second difference is rifles use a cartridge and shotgun uses shells.
Cartridges are measured in calibers and shells are measured in gages, except .410gage, which is
acutely a caliber and would be equivalent to 68gage. Both rifles and shotguns have different types
actions, such as single shot, semi automatic and

Knowledge Discovery And Data Mining
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
________________________________________
1.1 Background
Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining are rapidly evolving areas of research that are at intersection
of multiple application areas and approaches. Today no field either it belongs to computer or not,
knowledge discovery is required. The loss prediction, cost estimation, identification of market moves
are the common application areas where knowledge discovery is essential. Knowledge discovery is
not an individual process, instead it is the combination of various session data operations that are
applied in a series to extract some valuable information from dataset. Data Mining is the core part of
Knowledge Discovery Process. Data Mining is the intelligent ... Show more content on

The tools used different data mining technique and algorithm. Example of such data mining tools are

1.1.2 Main reason for growth of Data Mining Research
The amount of digital data has been exploding during the past decade, while the number of scientists,
engineers and analysts available to analyze the data has been static. To bridge this gap requires the
solutions of fundamentally new research problems, which can be grouped into the following broad
challenges: (a) developing algorithms and system to mine large, massive and high dimensional
datasets, (b) developing algorithms and system to mine new types of data, (c) developing algorithms,
protocols and other infrastructure to mine distributed data, (d) improving the ease of use of data
mining systems, and (e) developing appropriate privacy and security models for data mining. In order
to respond to these challenges, we require applied, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research in
data mining and knowledge discovery (Soman et al., 2008).
1.1.3 Introduction to Data Mining
Data Mining is considered as the effective knowledge process to perform the data value analysis so
that effective data discovery over the application data can be performed. These kind of da mining
operations are defined a low level

Theme Of To Build A Fire

Rid Of Racism In America
Racism in America these days is too common, and is also the cause of the Black Lives Matter riots
and arguments. My idea to get rid of racism in America is to eliminate race altogether, without race
then racism wouldn t be a problem at all, that s why my idea is the best.. Most citizens make racist
jokes without even knowing it, and even when they do realize it, they don t make any effort to make
up for it. Without races these jokes wouldn t be funny because they wouldn t even exist. The main
reason people are racist is because they see other races as different, or strange, and even alien. Race
should not determine how you treat them, or see them as. Just because someone could be white or
black, doesn t mean it s right to treat them

The Positive And Negative Effects of DNA Profiling
Justin Broyles Apr. 12, 1995 Justice Theory Lance Miller
Genetic engineering has developed and blossomed at a frightening rate in the last decade. Originating
as merely an area of interest for scientists, genetic engineering has now become an area of which all
people should be somewhat knowledgeable. DNA profiling has many uses, both positive and negative,
in our society.
Aside from its usefulness in many legal investigations, DNA profiling can be used in the workplace to
discriminate against employees whose profiles could pose a financial risk. For example, genetic
technology can and has been used to determine the capacity of a person to contract certain diseases,

Supposedly, the use of numerical codes will allow huge databases to search for a match of a individual
DNA band. However, these matches are not 100 percent. This inconclusive correlation between DNA
patterns has led to a heated debate which has culminated in federal court with Daubert vs. Merrel Dow
Pharmaceuticals Inc. The ruling in the Daubert case said that the acceptance by the scientific
community is not enough by itself to allow certain scientific techniques into court as evidence,
especially given the reality that a suspects entire future could hang in the balance of a scientific
finding. Many people have argued that the use of a national DNA database infringes on the individuals
constitutional rights to privacy. However, law officials have claimed that the advantages this database
presents for society supercede the individual s rights. This dilemma can easily be associated to the
social contract presented by Thomas Hobbes. In this contract, Hobbes believed that each individual
should give up certain individual rights in order to achieve protection from the whole. The forfeit of
the right to privacy of one s
DNA can thus be considered one of these forfeited rights. A person must weigh the advantages of
having a past, present, or future criminal s DNA profile on database with the disadvantages of having
one s own. But the disadvantages will outweigh the advantages when private institutions develop

Reformation Of Public Education In The Age Of Reform
One of the many changes in the Age of Reform was the reformation of public education. The first
schools were built for religious purposes, but during this reformation period, the reformers wanted
better schools to make sure that the future voters would be informed. Also, these schools would help
immigrants become part of the culture of American society. Massachusetts was the first state to set up
public schools, schools paid by taxes, and this was also the first state to have compulsory education.
This is where children had to go to school until a certain age. Reformers like Horace Mann changed
many aspects to the schools in Massachusetts. He created colleges to train teachers, raised the salaries
of the teachers, and he lengthened the school

Jaffe V. Samsung Elecs
Jaffé v. Samsung Elecs. Co.
Qimonda AG, a German semiconductor manufacturer, had patent cross licenses with many of its
competitors. Such licenses, in industries like electronics, allow parties in effect to have a truce with
respect to patents, so that they may proceed their respective businesses. Qimonda file bankruptcy and
ceased operations, so no longer needed the protection of the cross licenses. Rather, it terminated the
licenses under German bankruptcy law, to replace them with licenses under which it would receive
royalty payments. Qimonda filed a chapter 15 bankruptcy proceeding in the United States, to do the
same with its American licenses. The representative committed to re license Qimonda s patent
portfolio to the Licensees at a reasonable and nondiscriminatory ( RAND ) royalty. However, the
American courts held that US bankruptcy law did not allow licenses. Chapter 15 of the Bankruptcy
Code allows the representative of a foreign bankruptcy proceeding to file an ancillary proceeding in
the United States. It also allows broad recognition of orders entered in the foreign bankruptcy
proceeding. But the recognition is subject to certain safeguards. The US bankruptcy court may refuse
to apply the foreign order if the action would be manifestly contrary to the public policy of the United
States. In addition, the court must ensure that the interests of the creditors and other interested entities,
including the debtor, are sufficiently protected.

Catholic Social Teaching Of Human Dignity In Nursing
The guiding principles of Catholic Social Teaching have the overarching, dominating theme of human
dignity (Condit, 2016, p. 371). The focus is, that human beings were formed in God s image and in
return, humanities purpose is to follow in God s footsteps and portray the same love and grace
(Coleman, 2008) (Condit, 2016, p. 371). Consequently, this affects how human beings interact with
each other, requiring commitment, to look after, encourage, maintain and promote each other
(Coleman, 2008) (Herbert, 2016, p. 7). One way to apply, this Catholic Social Teaching of human
dignity, is to understand the nurse s relationship with the patient. Nurses need to approach the patient
with respect and maintain the person s privacy, acknowledging that they are a fellow human being,
with their own personal characteristics and beliefs (Condit, 2016, p. 371) (Walsh Kowanko, 2002, p.

Mildred Pierce Patriarchy
The films Mildred Pierce (Michael Curtiz, 1945) and Thirteen (Catherine Hardwicke, 2003) portray
the Freudian myth that examines the view of feminine subservience apropos a patriarchy infused
society. Hence, the conflict at the crux of the Maternal Melodrama that relates to the classical conflict
(Chaos vs. Order) underlying most Hollywood genres is Autonomy vs. Control. In Mildred Pierce, the
female characters representing Autonomy are posited against male Control. This Maternal Melodrama
conflates with Film Noir so as it reflects the prevailing social context; women were breadwinners in
the 40s, however, in the postwar era, hegemonic masculinity reasserted itself by divesting women of
any power they had gained while the patriarchal order was suspended during WWII. Consequently,
classical Hollywood narratives portrayed the impending chaos as women resisted patriarchy; such
conflict was subtly present in the post feminist era. Accordingly, in Thirteen, Tracy ... Show more

Kay, who also resisted patriarchy as a tomboy, faces death and Veda is prosecuted. In the end, Mildred
walking with Bert into a bright dawn signifies her submission to and restoration of patriarchal order.
Contrarily, maternal abjection in Thirteen does not reduce the symbolic signification of the female.
Eventually, Melanie succeeds in subduing Tracy, who feebly resists her restraining if loving embrace.
This act of containment counters the symbolic castration and legitimizes women s potency. As Tracy
wakes up next to Melanie, the sun beaming down on them suggests that order has been established.
This is further emphasized with her spinning as if out of her chaotic life on a merry go round and
releasing the repressed pain in screaming. Hence, unlike in Mildred Pierce whereby, female Autonomy
leads to Chaos and male Control brings Order, the former defies the latter in

human than hero? We both know the truth is far more complex than do not hide. (quoted on

Here, Johnson lets the readers know that he too, fears law enforcement agents. His experience has
taught him to do so. As the human he is, he remembers all the black boys gone missing or killed, he
can t be totally certain that it won t happen to his nephew. Nonetheless, being a good role model he
puts his fears asides, and tries to teach his nephew that the police is not going to hurt him.
Furthermore, the author takes notice of how not the get kill by the police. If you are a black boy,

The Failure Of The American School System
The source of the American school system s failure has much to do with the fact that it is simply
outdated. It was set up in the late 1800s and early 1900s in order to meet the rampant needs of
America s newly industrialized economy. Public schooling supplied factories with a skilled labor
force, and provided basic literacy to the masses, and it was the education that the vast majority of the
population received. The overall implementation of our current school system credits itself to
educational reformer Horace Mann, known as the father of American public schooling. Horace Mann
examined a broad range of various educational models before eventually putting into effect the
Prussian model. Designed by Frederick the Great, this model s aim was to create a system designed to

It was also the easiest and most economical way to teach literary skills on a large scale. Social
efficiency theorists began to enact this system during the early 20th century in an endeavor to
industrialize the educational process. Led by educators such as Ellwood Cubberley, they treated
education as a means of social engineering. Our schools are, in a sense, factories in which the raw
products (children) are to be shaped and fashioned into products to meet the various demands of life.
(Cubberley, 1917). Building upon the depersonalized monotony and rigorous hierarchy of the Prussian
system, they formed an industrial education model devised to mass produce millions of workers for
America s factories. These theorists believed that most of America s students were destined for a life
of menial, industrial labor. Thus, they designed a multi track educational system intended to categorize
pupils from an early age. While the best and brightest were tailored for leadership ranks, the
preponderance was confined to a tedious education of rote learning and task

Swot Analysis And Porter s Five Forces Of Competition
Business strategists often use strategic planning frameworks such as SWOT analysis and Porter s five
forces of competition. These frameworks aid organizations think about the sorts of inquiries they want
to ask and the information that they need to put in consideration before making any business
decisions. They both help in evaluating company s strengths and weaknesses associated to the industry
s opportunities and challenges. SWOT can be defined as a more general and overall assessment, while
the Five Forces model is more single growth decision. SWOT is a simple evaluation of the company s
current situation based on strengths and weaknesses, as well as a look at opportunities and possible
threats as the company moves forward in the industry. To conduct this analysis, company managers
often set up a table that includes main points in each of the four SWOT classifications. Strengths and
weaknesses are evaluated in relation to how your company currently deals against competitors.
Identifying opportunities and threats includes suggesting future events or direction. The Five Forces
model includes five factors in a competitive framework. They include the bargaining power of
suppliers, the bargaining power of buyers, competitive rivalry, threat from substitutions and threat of
new entries. Five Forces analysis is used to find out the competitive advantages the business has in
each part. As a product reseller, for example, it helps to identify your relative bargaining power

The Reid Technique, By John E. Reid
The Reid technique, developed by John E. Reid, has been a widely used technique in acquiring
confessions from suspected criminals. While many users of the Reid technique have praised it, calling
it the best interrogation procedure (Rodgers, 2015), the Reid technique has come under fire from
several critics, claiming that it risks obtaining inherently unreliable confessions (Gallini 2009). The
purpose of this essay will be to critically discuss the impact of the Reid technique, and its use by
police officers to obtain confessions. It is important to discuss the Reid technique as it has recently
received criticism for its use in obtaining false confessions from suspects, especially children or those
with a lower IQ. Firstly, this essay will focus on the positive impacts of the Reid technique, and how it
can be used as an effective method of interrogation in order to get a confession from a suspect.
Furthermore, this essay will then state the negative impacts of using the Reid technique, and how it
use has been involved in several false confessions. Finally, this essay will then state a possible
alternative to the Reid technique in the PEACE interrogation technique, which has been used with
great success in many countries. Overall, this essay will argue that while the Reid technique does have
positive impacts, there are more suitable alternatives to interrogating suspects. The Reid technique
seeks to evaluate a person s truthfulness independent from a polygraph

tension between progression and regression. In both Seven Guitars and the ninth play of Wilson s

Hedley kills Floyd, the musician who has betrayed black communality and disserved the legacy and

Born on October 9th, 1940 in Liverpool Maternity Hospital in Liverpool, England, John Lennon was

His Father was often away, but he continued to support Lennon and his Mother with regular checks,

Liberal Arts Misperceptions
Why are many young Americans so uncomfortable with liberal arts? And why are countless high
school graduates shying away from this particular form of education? Just like anything else that is
popular, once liberal arts has been accurately, or inaccurately, discredited, the aftermath inevitably
spreads. As more information is being mistakenly spread, numerous liberal arts colleges are taking the
fall. To combat the onslaught of negative publicity, university officers are beginning to speak out to
discredit the invalid claims. Sanford J. Ungar, a journalist and president of Goucher College, is one of
the faculty members actively trying to disprove the accusations against liberal arts colleges and
educations. In his February 2010 article from the academic journal The Chronicle of Higher
Education, Ungar gives readers multiple examples of common misunderstandings about liberal arts
and then informs them why those examples are incorrect. Appropriately titled, Ungar s 7 Major
Misperceptions About the Liberal Arts is an easy go to guide when a person wants to learn more about
liberal arts. These readers, mainly students and parents looking toward a higher degree of education,
can read Ungar s essay and find new knowledge about the liberal arts discipline. As students and
parents are looking into colleges, their minds need to be open and free of biases. Sanford Ungar s
essay can help broaden the mindset of families, and even help make a decision to attend a liberal

The Distance that Separates us from Shakespeare s Merchant of Venice
Without a doubt, Shylock of Shakespeare s The Merchant of Venice has been a subject of much
controversy and debate for scholars and critics worldwide. Specifically, an element of his character
that has been thoroughly reviewed is the harshness with which he proposes his bond with Antonio. As
contemporary readers of the pound of flesh story we are naturally mortified by the fact that Shylock
would call for such barbarous terms. What many of us do not realize is that while we might feel horror
about the idea of the bond, the same is not necessarily true for an Elizabethan audience. This story has
been a major source of misunderstanding for many of its readers, as ... Show more content on

The dialogue between Shylock and Antonio occurs as follows:
Shylock. This kindness I will show.
Go with me to a notary, seal me there
Your single bond, and, in a merry sport,
If you repay me not on such a day,
In such a place, such sum or sums as are
Expressed in the condition, let the forfeit
Be nominated for an equal pound
Of your fair flesh to be cut off and taken
In what part of your body pleaseth me.
Antonio. Content, in faith. I ll seal to such a bond,
And say there is much kindness in the Jew. (2.1.139 149)
It is clear in Antonio s response that he finds nothing extraordinary about these terms at all. Without
hesitation he accepts the conditions of the contract and even goes on to deem Shylock s proposal as
kind. In the Shakespearian sense of the word, kindness even means tenderness, affection, love, or
humaneness (Grebanier, 98). This should suggest to us that the idea to stake a pound of Antonio s
flesh is by no means a representation of Shylock s devilishness or cruelty. After all, according to
Shylock himself, it is only in a merry sport that they shall enter such an agreement.
In light of textual scrutiny, it is also worthwhile to re examine the court scene in which Shylock is now
demanding the fulfillment of the bond. Shylock s relentless pursuit of his pound of flesh again serves
to discredit his character in

The Name of the Star
In the book, The Name of the Star, a teenage girl named Aurora, but goes by Rory, is moving to
London to go to a boarding school. Rory s parents are both a philosopher in college. London has the

The Ripper was a ghost. A ghost who can frantically go around and kill people. He can t be seen on

Redesign Of Copley Square Analysis
Copley Square is a sort of visual representation or metaphor of Boston as a whole. Boston has for
centuries been a center of learning and culture, and Copley is surrounded today by the Boston Public
Library, numerous churches, and influential businesses. Boston is a junction between the old and the
new, and Copley sports differing ages of architecture varying from the Hancock tower to the Old
South Church. Boston is where different people come together, and Copley is where the Back Bay
meets the South End. Boston is known for its oddly charming seemingly unplanned arrangement, and
more so than anything else, Copley Square represents this (Krieger 47). In my redesign of Copley
square, I paid attention to all of these elements as well as others in an attempt to create a destination
that respects its surroundings and history in addition to drawing people in and serving several
purposes. The first aspect I worked on in redesigning Copley was the pathways. I found that upon

The greater amount of green space hopes to draw more people in from the surrounding communities

To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf Essay
To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
When speaking of modernism in the work Virginia Woolf, scholars too readily use her innovations in
style and technique as the starting point for critical analysis, focusing largely on the ways in which her
prose represents a departure from the conventional novel in both style and content. To simply discuss
the extent of her unique style, however, is to overlook the role of tradition in her creation of a new
literary identity. In To the Lighthouse, Woolf s invention reveals itself instead as a reinvention, a
recasting of the conventional through the use of the traditional. Within the text, this relationship
manifests itself in Lily Briscoe s relationship with Mrs. Ramsay and the extent to which ... Show more

To the Lighthouse most appropriately fits this latter definition, where Woolf s own discourse suggests
a similar understanding of the term (Zwerdling 180). In a diary entry of 1928, Woolf notes her
reluctance to consider To the Lighthouse a novel, describing it instead as a final act of remembrance: I
used to think of him [father] and mother daily she recalled, but writing The Lighthouse laid them in
my mind. In another entry the same year, Woolf describes To the Lighthouse as a burial rite, a
cathartic elegy in which she expressed some very long felt and deeply felt emotion...and in expressing
it explained it, and then laid it to rest. Contemporary scholars of Woolf s work have similarly affirmed
the importance of the concept of elegy within To the Lighthouse, asserting as Eavan Boland does that
the true text of To the Lighthouse is undoubtedly Mrs. Ramsay, a figurative representation of Julia
Duckworth Stephen, Woolf s mother (Boland 10). In a letter sent to Woolf after reading the novel,
Vanessa Bell further reinforces Mrs. Ramsay s connection to Julia, noting that Woolf had created in
Mrs. Ramsay a portrait of mother which is more like her to me than anything I could have ever
conceived of as possible. Through Woolf s own comments as well as those familiar with her life, it

Crime And Punishment Utilitarianism
Are there special human beings who are entitled to more rights and privileges than ordinary humans?
Rodia s theory in Dostoyevsky s novel, Crime and Punishment, addresses this question. His desire to
perform benevolent deeds for society converts him into a strong believer in his theory, influencing him
to commit murder. Through Rodia s experiment, the novel proves the theory false. Dostoevsky uses
his characterization of Raskolnikov to express criticism of the popular theory, Utilitarianism.

extraordinary humans commit crimes that are beneficial to society and thus, they have a perfect right
to commit breaches of morality and crimes, and the law is not for them (205). These men have a right
to take lead in society because they are given extraordinary tasks; at the same time, they are above the
ordinary men and can overlook their moral laws because the privileged men s crimes are justified for
their moral purposes. At the time of his murder, Rodia s theory is underdeveloped and his crime was
an experimentation. When Rodia confesses to Sonia, he says, I wanted to murder without casuistry, to
murder for my own sake, for myself alone! I didn t want to lie about it even to myself (329). In truth,
Rodia wanted to test out his theory, despite his justifications, and find out if he was an extraordinary
human and were given these rights. He desperately wanted to feed his self esteem by placing himself
superior to others. However, his psychological battle, the constant guilt, uneasiness, and instability,
confirmed that he is was not granted these immortal rights. Ultimately, Rodia accepts the truth he had
been rejecting and turns himself in order to free himself from the guilt that captured him. In the end,
Rodia had no revolutionary cause to murder the

Pi Hero s Journey
How does one get classified as a hero? Would they need super powers? Or could they just be a
protagonist from a basic traditional Journey who overcomes challenges in order to meet the end goal
of an objective or fortune. In this story, Pi fits the attributes of a saint, despite the fact that he is just a
16 year old boy. Every hero, before embarking on their journey, has to get through the three stages:
separation, crossing the threshold, and the return. Answering your call to adventure, leads the hero on
a trip of departure from a familiar land he knows to venture of somewhere in a new region. Pi s call of

Behavioral Mimicry in Superior Subordinate Exchanges
Introduction
Communication extends far past the act of speaking. From the time we are born, we communicate
with the people around us without having language as a medium. Instead, babies convey their
thoughts, emotions, wants, and needs with their face and body. As babies turn into children, and
children into adults, this facet of communication is marginalized and body language seems to become
something far less important than spoken language. Subconsciously, however, the ways other s bodies
and faces are held have a great impact on the way people interpret words. One nuanced aspect of body
language is behavioral mimicry s place in forming bonds between people. This paper will discuss the
effects, and a potential application, of unconscious mirroring and mimicking in social interactions. To
clarify any confusion, usage of mirroring and mimicking are synonymous throughout the paper.
Unconscious mirroring would not be possible without body language. This unspoken communication
is most commonly split up into two classifications: facial cues, and bodily cues or movements.
Unfortunately, the complexity of human movements has yielded experiments that operationalize each
drastically differently. For simplicity, we will use Peter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One scenario that has not been covered in depth is the effect of mirroring in superior subordinate
social situations. When strangers were put together to accomplish a task, mirroring had an effect, but
how about when one person is given power over the other? One such situation is during interviews
and is the basis for my research question: does mirroring by an interviewee affect the perceived
performance in an interview for a

Bacteria Ecology Essay
Introduction This lab experiment serves as a model for community succession using bacterial colonies
as the model. A bacterial colony grows from a single bacterium and is composed of millions of cells.
Each colony has distinctive colony morphology: size, shape, color, consistency, and color. Community
succession is a phenomenon observed in the organizational hierarchy of all living organisms.
Community succession is not limited to bacterial colonies, but spans the entire community of life. As
the community grows, it changes the environment it inhabits, and the resulting community is different
than at the start. As community succession occurs in bacterial colonies pH, odor, color, and
consistency changes take place. In this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Methods We began the experiment by noting the characteristics of the different milk ages by smell,
color, and pH was measured using pH paper. Fresh milk smelled like milk, had a white color, and a pH
of 7. 24 hour old milk had a very slight sour smell to it, was still white colored with a pH of 7. Four
day old milk had a sour smell, was white with visible chunks, and had a pH of 6. Lastly, four day old
milk smelled like sour cream, was yellow colored with white chunks, and had a pH of 5. Once the
characteristics of the milk were noted we began to prepare the agar plates for the different milk
samples. For cold milk, one agar plate was labeled undiluted, and one plate was labeled 10 1 . 0.5 ml
of milk was pipette onto the plate labeled undiluted. 0.1 ml of milk was then pipette onto the plate
labeled 10 1 , and the pipette was discarded. Using an alcohol and flame sterilized bent rod, the milk
was distributed across the agar plates. The lid was never removed completely, just lifted up enough to
allow the rod to thoroughly spread the milk. For 24 hour milk, we prepared four agar plates by
labeling them undiluted, 10 1 , 10 2 , and 10 3 . 1 ml of milk was pipette onto the plate labeled
undiluted. Then 0.1 ml milk was pipette onto the plate labeled 10 1 . We proceeded to pipette 0.1 ml of
milk into the 9 ml water blank labeled 10 2 . The pipette was then discarded and

To bridge this gap requires the solutions of fundamentally new research problems, which can be grouped into the following broad challenges: (a) developing algorithms and system to mine large, massive and high dimensional datasets, (b) developing algorithms and system to mine new types of data, (c) developing algorithms, protocols and other infrastructure to mine distributed data, (d) improving the ease of use of data mining systems, and (e) developing appropriate privacy and security models for data mining. This inconclusive correlation between DNA patterns has led to a heated debate which has culminated in federal court with Daubert vs. Merrel Dow Pharmaceuticals Inc. The ruling in the Daubert case said that the acceptance by the scientific community is not enough by itself to allow certain scientific techniques into court as evidence, especially given the reality that a suspects entire future could hang in the balance of a scientific finding. Many people have argued that the use of a national DNA database infringes on the individuals constitutional rights to privacy. However, law officials have claimed that the advantages this database presents for society supercede the individual s rights. This dilemma can easily be associated to the social contract presented by Thomas Hobbes. In this contract, Hobbes believed that each individual should give up certain individual rights in order to achieve protection from the whole. The forfeit of the right to privacy of one s DNA can thus be considered one of these forfeited rights. The focus is, that human beings were formed in God s image and in return, humanities purpose is to follow in God s footsteps and portray the same love and grace (Coleman, 2008) (Condit, 2016, p. 371). In Mildred Pierce, the female characters representing Autonomy are posited against male Control. This Maternal Melodrama conflates with Film Noir so as it reflects the prevailing social context; women were breadwinners in the 40s, however, in the postwar era, hegemonic masculinity reasserted itself by divesting women of any power they had gained while the patriarchal order was suspended during WWII. • 24. The Failure Of The American School System The source of the American school system s failure has much to do with the fact that it is simply outdated. It was set up in the late 1800s and early 1900s in order to meet the rampant needs of America s newly industrialized economy. Public schooling supplied factories with a skilled labor force, and provided basic literacy to the masses, and it was the education that the vast majority of the population received. The overall implementation of our current school system credits itself to educational reformer Horace Mann, known as the father of American public schooling. Horace Mann examined a broad range of various educational models before eventually putting into effect the Prussian model. It was also the easiest and most economical way to teach literary skills on a large scale. Social efficiency theorists began to enact this system during the early 20th century in an endeavor to industrialize the educational process. Led by educators such as Ellwood Cubberley, they treated education as a means of social engineering. Our schools are, in a sense, factories in which the raw products (children) are to be shaped and fashioned into products to meet the various demands of life. (Cubberley, 1917). Building upon the depersonalized monotony and rigorous hierarchy of the Prussian system, they formed an industrial education model devised to mass produce millions of workers for America s factories. These theorists believed that most of America s students were destined for a life of menial, industrial labor. Thus, they designed a multi track educational system intended to categorize pupils from an early age. To conduct this analysis, company managers often set up a table that includes main points in each of the four SWOT classifications. Strengths and weaknesses are evaluated in relation to how your company currently deals against competitors. Identifying opportunities and threats includes suggesting future events or direction. The Five Forces model includes five factors in a competitive framework. They include the bargaining power of suppliers, the bargaining power of buyers, competitive rivalry, threat from substitutions and threat of new entries. • 28. The Reid Technique, By John E. Reid The Reid technique, developed by John E. Reid, has been a widely used technique in acquiring confessions from suspected criminals. While many users of the Reid technique have praised it, calling it the best interrogation procedure (Rodgers, 2015), the Reid technique has come under fire from several critics, claiming that it risks obtaining inherently unreliable confessions (Gallini 2009). The purpose of this essay will be to critically discuss the impact of the Reid technique, and its use by police officers to obtain confessions. It is important to discuss the Reid technique as it has recently received criticism for its use in obtaining false confessions from suspects, especially children or those with a lower IQ. Firstly, this essay will focus on the positive impacts of the Reid technique, and how it can be used as an effective method of interrogation in order to get a confession from a suspect. Furthermore, this essay will then state the negative impacts of using the Reid technique, and how it use has been involved in several false confessions. Finally, this essay will then state a possible alternative to the Reid technique in the PEACE interrogation technique, which has been used with great success in many countries. Overall, this essay will argue that while the Reid technique does have positive impacts, there are more suitable alternatives to interrogating suspects. The Distance that Separates us from Shakespeare s Merchant of Venice Without a doubt, Shylock of Shakespeare s The Merchant of Venice has been a subject of much controversy and debate for scholars and critics worldwide. Specifically, an element of his character that has been thoroughly reviewed is the harshness with which he proposes his bond with Antonio. As contemporary readers of the pound of flesh story we are naturally mortified by the fact that Shylock would call for such barbarous terms. Antonio. Content, in faith. I ll seal to such a bond, And say there is much kindness in the Jew. (2.1.139 149) It is clear in Antonio s response that he finds nothing extraordinary about these terms at all. Without hesitation he accepts the conditions of the contract and even goes on to deem Shylock s proposal as kind. In the Shakespearian sense of the word, kindness even means tenderness, affection, love, or humaneness (Grebanier, 98). This should suggest to us that the idea to stake a pound of Antonio s flesh is by no means a representation of Shylock s devilishness or cruelty. After all, according to Shylock himself, it is only in a merry sport that they shall enter such an agreement. To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf Essay To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf When speaking of modernism in the work Virginia Woolf, scholars too readily use her innovations in style and technique as the starting point for critical analysis, focusing largely on the ways in which her prose represents a departure from the conventional novel in both style and content. To simply discuss the extent of her unique style, however, is to overlook the role of tradition in her creation of a new literary identity. To the Lighthouse most appropriately fits this latter definition, where Woolf s own discourse suggests a similar understanding of the term (Zwerdling 180). In a diary entry of 1928, Woolf notes her reluctance to consider To the Lighthouse a novel, describing it instead as a final act of remembrance: I used to think of him [father] and mother daily she recalled, but writing The Lighthouse laid them in my mind. In another entry the same year, Woolf describes To the Lighthouse as a burial rite, a cathartic elegy in which she expressed some very long felt and deeply felt emotion...and in expressing it explained it, and then laid it to rest. Contemporary scholars of Woolf s work have similarly affirmed the importance of the concept of elegy within To the Lighthouse, asserting as Eavan Boland does that the true text of To the Lighthouse is undoubtedly Mrs. Ramsay, a figurative representation of Julia Duckworth Stephen, Woolf s mother (Boland 10). In a letter sent to Woolf after reading the novel, Vanessa Bell further reinforces Mrs. Ramsay s connection to Julia, noting that Woolf had created in Mrs. Ramsay a portrait of mother which is more like her to me than anything I could have ever conceived of as possible. Rodia s theory in Dostoyevsky s novel, Crime and Punishment, addresses this question. Dostoevsky uses his characterization of Raskolnikov to express criticism of the popular theory, Utilitarianism. These men have a right to take lead in society because they are given extraordinary tasks; at the same time, they are above the ordinary men and can overlook their moral laws because the privileged men s crimes are justified for their moral purposes. At the time of his murder, Rodia s theory is underdeveloped and his crime was an experimentation. When Rodia confesses to Sonia, he says, I wanted to murder without casuistry, to murder for my own sake, for myself alone! I didn t want to lie about it even to myself (329). Superior-Subordinate Exchanges ERIC LIU A92044372 COGS 14A W16 PROFESSOR ROSSANO Behavioral Mimicry in Superior Subordinate Exchanges Introduction Communication extends far past the act of speaking. From the time we are born, we communicate with the people around us without having language as a medium. Instead, babies convey their thoughts, emotions, wants, and needs with their face and body. As babies turn into children, and children into adults, this facet of communication is marginalized and body language seems to become something far less important than spoken language. Subconsciously, however, the ways other s bodies and faces are held have a great impact on the way people interpret words. One nuanced aspect of body language is behavioral mimicry s place in forming bonds between people. This paper will discuss the effects, and a potential application, of unconscious mirroring and mimicking in social interactions. To clarify any confusion, usage of mirroring and mimicking are synonymous throughout the paper. Unconscious mirroring would not be possible without body language. Community succession is not limited to bacterial colonies, but spans the entire community of life. As the community grows, it changes the environment it inhabits, and the resulting community is different than at the start. As community succession occurs in bacterial colonies pH, odor, color, and consistency changes take place. In this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Methods We began the experiment by noting the characteristics of the different milk ages by smell, color, and pH was measured using pH paper. Fresh milk smelled like milk, had a white color, and a pH of 7. 24 hour old milk had a very slight sour smell to it, was still white colored with a pH of 7. Four day old milk had a sour smell, was white with visible chunks, and had a pH of 6. Lastly, four day old milk smelled like sour cream, was yellow colored with white chunks, and had a pH of 5. Once the characteristics of the milk were noted we began to prepare the agar plates for the different milk samples. For cold milk, one agar plate was labeled undiluted, and one plate was labeled 10 1 . 0.5 ml of milk was pipette onto the plate labeled undiluted. 0.1 ml of milk was then pipette onto the plate labeled 10 1 , and the pipette was discarded. Using an alcohol and flame sterilized bent rod, the milk was distributed across the agar plates. The lid was never removed completely, just lifted up enough to allow the rod to thoroughly spread the milk. For 24 hour milk, we prepared four agar plates by labeling them undiluted, 10 1 , 10 2 , and 10 3 . 1 ml of milk was pipette onto the plate labeled undiluted. Then 0.1 ml milk was pipette onto the plate labeled 10 1 . We proceeded to pipette 0.1 ml of milk into the 9 ml water blank labeled 10 2 . The pipette was then discarded and ...
