Chesty Puller:Unlikely Hero Chesty Puller s childhood was filled with old veteran tales of the Civil
War. Since he was enthralled by these stories, he wanted to fight with the U.S. He enlisted, but was too
young and did not have consent from his mother to join. Puller persisted and attended Virginia
Military Academy but later dropped out after a year to join the Marines during WWI. Chesty believed
in going out and fighting with the men he was leading, even when he was young he believed that for
the reason he quit the academy We make generals today on the basis of their ability to write a damned
letter. Those kinds of men can t get us ready for war (Puller). Sadly, Puller ... Show more content on

main threshold guardians. They both pushed him to go the military at the right time. After, Chesty
graduated from officer training school he finally got sent out to Haiti to train the newly formed
Gendarmerie d Haiti. This was his first time in combat but he still had exceptional leadership skills to
lead his men through more than 40 engagements with the enemy rebels. He then was sent to the
Nicaraguan National Guard detachment, here he earned his first navy cross. He acquired this by
successfully conquering his first major task, lead against five successive engagements against superior
numbers of armed bandit forces. Chesty could not do all these amazing actions on his own. The men
he lead could also be considered as his threshold guardians. Chesty Puller lead the : Horse Marines,
first battalion, seventh Marine regiment, and the first marine regiment. Chesty and his all his men
made it through many battles that looked like a lost a cause. Chesty has no specific/clear threshold

Are The Four Components Of Marriott s Financial Strategy...
1) Are the four components of Marriott s financial strategy consistent with its growth objective?
a) It is advisable to manage than to own as it is consistent with the growth strategy. In this manner,
mar riot can attract additional capital that gives it an opportunity to even invest more in the future,
share the risks with limited partners. The partnership can be of great benefit as it is a good way of
saving on taxes.
b) The decision to invest in projects increases the shareholders value of the company. This is
consistent with the growth and from the NPV criteria, positive NPV of projects increases the
shareholder s value.
c) Optimization of the capital structure is also consistent with the growth of the company. The optimal

How does Marriott use its estimate of its cost of capital? Does this make sense?
a) Discounted cash flows from the projects by the suitable division of a hurdle rate to get the net
present value which financially makes sense since risks among different divisions do vary.
b) Another method is through incorporation of the hurdle rate in the compensation policy which in
sense does not make sense since the rate does reflect risks of different activities and not managers
performance.
3. What is the weighted average cost of capital for Marriott Corporation?
Marriot Corporation measures the opportunity cost of the cost of capital for the investments using the
weighted average cost of capital for similar investments that have the same risk. The WACC for the
corporation is 11.89%.
a) What risk free rate and the risk premium did you use to calculate the cost of equity?
For the purposes of risk premium consistency, the arithmetic average was most applicable to the
historic US government bonds of 4.58% for the longest period because of its accurate estimate.
The risk premium used is 7.43% though it seems to be high, low free rate compensates it.
For the calculation of equity, beta is a necessity because there is no comparison that matches its
operational profile. Beta 1.17 ke = (4.58%+1.17) =

Lake Descriptive Writing
A lake is no place for a watch. I think it s unreasonable to request anyone to keep time in such a place.
My tan forearm barred no watch; no stripe of pale skin to indicate a childhood subject to the
constraints of Tick and Tock. A timeless realm, the lake emancipated the soul and the body, allowing
both to mingle with nature. My bare, unpainted toes were always covered with mud from walking the
trail around Apache Lake, past the little outhouse, Carp Cove, but not as far as Hodgson s dusty old
cabin. It was difficult to see from the road, and at times I felt nobody ever went there but me. Tall
yellowed grasses embraced the water s rocky edge like a mother s protective hug. Clumps of Aspen
whispered collectively as I built forts in their midst, and Ponderosa tress stood tall and unyielding,
looking down at my imaginative creations with approval. The wind and the euphonious lilt of the
Meadowlark were ideal companions as I played and watched and wondered. ... Show more content on

Once I spotted two distinct crawdads in the shallows of a stagnant chasm near the peninsula. With a
brave hand and cleaned out pickle jar I clumsily scooped up the clawed individuals, comparing their
color and liveliness. Tiny lobsters, one dark, one light, were dropped into the blue campfire pot, tails
curling as they hissed and cooked. To my surprise, the blackened crawdad was not inedible and tasted
the same as the lighter shellfish, a discovery that led to further investigation. Books eased my curiosity
as I researched the life cycle of the common crawfish. I learned that the dark crawfish had not molted
yet and had on his old exoskeleton, a trait that had no effect on its overall

Could Our Brain Be Evil Essay
Could Our Brains be Evil?
Thoughts. Thoughts come from your brain. For some people they can be great. For example,
productive thoughts can lead you places. Good grades, great job opportunities, and good decision
making.
For some people though, thoughts aren t always what that person wants them to be. Thought s for
them could mean life or death. A category in lame, versus popular. They cannot think straight, and
most of the time in a made up world for which they can escape in. One where they can be everything
they wish they could be.
So the question here is, Could Our Brains be Evil? My opinion on this is, some can be. But they were
shaped to be that way. Our minds start off a blank canvas hungry for a picture to gather and keep

Utilitarianism Gay Marriage
Gay Marriages
I strongly agree with the legalization of the gay marriages in many of the societies even though it is a
subject that elicits mixed reactions and opposition from some quarters. The utilitarianism approach
that seeks to establish whether the end justifies the means can be applied whereby the benefits of such
legalization and the disadvantages are compared. When gay marriages are legalized, the beneficiaries
will include the gays, adopted children and the society as a whole. Opponents such include religion,
which argues that marriage is a sacred institution to be shared between a man and woman and that
marriage, should serve a higher purpose of reproduction. However, the opponents would not suffer in

Understanding Social Influence On Online Choice
Purpose of the Study
To Switch or Not to Switch: Understanding Social Influence in Online Choice is a study that was
focused on the role of social influence in online recommender systems. Haiyi Zhu and Bernardo A.
Huberman, the authors of the study, were interested in studying how often peoples choices are affected
by other individuals endorsements. The hypothesis of the study is that individuals are more likely to
reverse their opinions when the reversion causes less self inconsistency (the confirmation pressure is
weaker) or the opposing social opinions are stronger (the conformity pressure is stronger) .
Methodology
The researchers conducted various online experiments. The participants in the study went to the Rankr
website to select their preference of one image out of two images displayed. They first did this with no
knowledge of what people before them picked. The second time the participants had indications of
what others had chosen. The researchers were trying to determine whether seeing other peoples
preferences affected the participants choices. This setup allowed for social influence to be measured
based on if people changed their selections between the two instances. The researchers wanted to see
if the participants changed their mind after seeing what others preferred.
In addition, the researchers wanted to manipulate the pressure of social opinions by changing the time
between the two selection periods. The first time participants selected their

Freed Black and White Women in Liberia
In 1822 the American Colonization Society(ACS), emigrated freed black slaves to Liberia located in
West Africa, however, during this time the indigenous had already been living there (Brown,
Education in Liberia, 46). Unfortunately, there is not much information on women in the colonization.
Scholars have written surprisingly little on the role of women in the movement. The few historians
who have studied women in the colonization movement have examined the rise and decline of female
support in the South (Younger, Philadelphia Ladies Liberia School Association and the Rise and
Decline of Northern Female Colonization Support, 237). To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Many of them were distrustful of the ACS s slaveholding leadership, many suspected that the
movement wanted to remove the free black population in order to strengthen slavery and that it was
part of a larger strategy to strip the free black population of its political influence (Younger, PLLSA,
242). This mistrust spread rapidly and began to appear on abolitionist newspapers. The ACS wanted to
send free blacks to another country so they wouldn t support freeing other slaves. This resulted in
many riots. The city witnessed recurring anti abolitionist and race riots during the 1830s and 1840s as
fears of immediate abolition spread (Younger, PLLSA, 242). The most well known riot that occurred
was he burning of Pennsylvania Hall in May of 1838 by a white crowd. Pennsylvania Hall was where
abolitionists held meetings. White people in Pennsylvania usually didn t involve themselves in these
kinds of actions and they were surprised by all the riots and violence going on. The colonizationialists
gained from these riots of the abolitionist activists rebellions because they played on white racial
fears. Abolitionists were condemned by the the Presbyterian Synod of Philadelphia who warned that
abolishing slavery would rend the Church and the Union in twain (Younger, PLLSA, 243). The church
feared that if slavery was abolished then the Church and the Union would split. Pastors and churches

Learning Theory, Prior Attachment Experience Within Early...
Within this essay there will be a consideration to one key element in detail, with the intention of
describing a successful mathematics lesson; with reference to relevant learning theory, prior
attachment experience within early years and educational reporters.
A mathematics lesson has many key elements to make it successful within an educational setting, such
as hands on learning, the use of resources and use of assessment. This essay will have a core focus on
children learning through play with regard to Development Matters. (Early Education, 2012).
When planning practical learning activities, practitioners may come across some difficulties with
regards to equal learning opportunities (Atherton, 2013). These issues may include but are not limited
to effective differentiation, assessment and different learning styles. It can be suggested from
observations on attachment, it is apparent that adapting learning activities to suit the needs of all
children can be difficult but these activities can be adapted such as when using number during play,
bigger numbers can be used for the higher ability and smaller numbers for the lower ability, Visser
(1993) concurs, stating that teachers can meet the need for progress by selecting appropriate teaching
methods to match the individual pupil s learning strategies, within a classroom setting.
As children grow they will develop their own, individual learning style and this can be difficult for
teachers to provide for, especially in an

The Alliance Of The United Steel Workers Union And The...
With the rapid industrialization of the world we are currently at a stalemate, with the rapidly depleting
supply of resources and the growing demand, we must either come up with new methods or risk the
loss of those resources altogether. In order to address these issues, the BlueGreen Alliance was
formed. The BlueGreen Alliance is the unlikely partnership of The United Steel Workers Union and
the environmentalist group Sierra Club, working together in order to build a cleaner and fairer
economy . The normally opposing organizations are collaborating to improve environmental policy
and expand the number of and quality of jobs in the green economy. Since the BlueGreen Alliance
may be the first major collaborative group working to tackle these issues their effectiveness in
comparison to other options has not been evaluated. In this paper we will look at the ties between
economical and environmental problems, what the BlueGreen Alliance has accomplished, and other
alternatives before determining the best course of action to build a cleaner and fairer economy. The
BlueGreen Alliance is not a partnership of convenience, but a partnership that works towards
spreading awareness about the issues we face when tasked with creating good jobs while also
maintaining a safe environment. Most successful businesses are able to contribute their success to
three important factors, limits, interdependence, and equity. Limits refer to the reality in which we do

Room Is An Independent Drama Feminist Film Essay
Women in media are underrepresented. They are overwhelmingly valued in film based on their
identification as a mother, wife, or lover. This is cause by media such as internet and TV because they
create comparisons by influencing in an individual s viewpoints of society and setting ideals. Mother s
roles in society are and have been watched at as responsible for the development of their children. If
these requirements are not fit by mothers they are looked negatively upon society. Room is an
independent drama feminist film based on Emma Donoghue novel and is directed by Lenny Abramson
in 2015 that changes society s ideals of women as mothers. The film narrates Ma s story of being
captive in a room that only have skylight, four walls, a bed, a tub, and a TV with poor signal with her
son Jack, a child of rape. After seven years, Jack being five, they are able to escape and Ma s
readjustment to society story begin. Through specific choices in cinematography, Abramson creates a
feminist film that contradict the ideals of mothers in film and plays with Ma s strength making her a
strong mother while being captive in room and transforming her into a weak mother when she readjust
to society. Strength, sacrifice and love is an embodiment of mother. She should always know how
much she is worth and shouldn t let anyone define who she is. A mother s feminine power is very
powerful and at the same time supportive. Till their last breath, they will love their child
unconditionally.

Building a Solid Work Ethic In Your Children Essay
Throughout my research I have noticed that kids who worked hard and were independent at a young

important life skills like learning to be independent. Parents who encourage their kids to work are

there can be no money wasting when the balance of our economy is at hand. Your child can learn
many important life skills if you push them to work for a goal. The will learn to be independent
because when they turn 18 there will be no one to hand them money. They will need to learn how to
spend their money wisely and work for all their rights. Receiving money is a privilege not a right and
they need to prove themselves. By doing this you child is learning not to rely on the parents for
financial support. Your child will also learn responsibility because they need to make decisions for
themselves and work for their allowance. Parents who hand money away to their kids are damaging
their mental perspective on life. However, if they encourage their kids to strive for something the child
wants the child s perspective is now stronger and better developed. When your children get married

Urban Sprawl Analysis
Approaching an unknown frontier, I was suddenly surrounded by sprawling foliage and vast forestry.
In the midst of towering trees, I walked down a dirt path longing to find my individuality. The rustling
of leaves warned predators of my oncoming approach. I reached the swampland, filled with new
layers of fresh algae and marsh. The surface does not budge like a Venus flytrap, mouth open waiting
for its next victim. However, the most interesting thought is the peace and quietness that is so long
forgotten in today s urban sprawl of the twenty first century. With the constant rushing of one place to

I scan the timber and bog for new signs of life like a curious birdwatcher wading through the depths of
the Amazon. My curiosity is suddenly sparked by a cluster of dragonflies. They are just a speck in the
universe, yet so important. Following the ideologies of Thoreau, one must look at an object indirectly
or through one s peripheral vision to fully understand and contextualize the presence of its being. The
dragonflies glide through the air like a flying squirrel prancing from tree to tree. With an unmistakable
arrogance, they strive to fulfil their symbiotic role in nature and play their part in an unforgiving
environment. Like many of us who are constantly striving to find ourself in today s world, the
dragonfly plays an important role. With eyesight as good as as a ravaging eagle hunting for its prey, a
dragonfly s carnivorous appetite rids the environment of mosquitoes as well as aphids, a type of tiny
insect that destroys crops. This insect, which may seem negligible to some, greatly impacts our daily
lives in more ways than some can even envision. This relationship sets off a complex domino effect

Organizational Resilience Essay
Background
Modern day organizations have to constantly change to meet the demands of customers. Workers have
to change with the organizations to be able to perform new functions and complete new sophisticated
tasks.
Not only the type of the work employees are required to do changes, place, method, and environment
of the work is also subject to transformation. With high turnover being common characteristic among
modern organizations, people have to work in teams each time composed of different people.
Mallak (1998) noticed that employees working in the sales and supplies department are even greater
exposed to external changes as they have to work with many different people.

Being resilient means being able to act adequately in demanding situations, avoid unwanted
developments during the course of working day, and make the most of opportunities in spite of all the
turmoil associated with the organizational change.
Organizations have to design and implement effective programs of resilience to ensure their own
survival (Mallak, 1998). Resilient organizations are the organizations that maintain their profitability
even when going through major transformation. This is due to the fact that its employees do not need
much time to adapt to new realities or to recover from stress associated with the change.
Defining Resilience
Resilience translates from Latin as to leap back and can be defined as the ability to recover from or
easily adjust to misfortune or change (Russell Consulting, Inc., 2007).
Lee (2008) writes that resilience refers to a person s capacity to handle difficulties, demands, and high
pressure without becoming stressed.
Lee divides the notion of resilience into four separate facets :
1. The ability to not sweat the small stuff Resilient workers maintain their good cheer despite all the
small frustrations accompanying the employees through their working day (Lee, 2008).
2. Ability to perform under high pressure Resilient workers cannot be overwhelmed by minor
difficulties at work place, neither pressure exercised upon them can

Compare And Contrast Platos Republic And Pomas More s Utopia
Plato s republic and Thomas More s Utopia are two old classical philosophical works attempting to
depict the perfect city. More´s utopia is written with a least Plato s Republic in mind as he intends to
write a truer ideal city and with a more pessimistic view of the human nature. Written 1800 years apart
there are differences to be found in respective descriptions of the ideal society, however the
similarities say a lot about what philosophers believed to be formative influences of both the good
individual and society.

Both Plato and More were visionaries of their times and presented ideas of equality and feminism that
would later go on to be the bases of political structures of the future. Today we can view their attitude
regarding the individual over the whole as communistic but to them they simply saw the need for
people to be value based on their abilities rather than birth and for everyone in a city to work for the
greater good of the city in order to create the ideal city. More intended to write a more realistic ideal
society then the one Plato had made up and started his book with a short poem Plato s Republic now I

build on to Utopia where More have kept the ides he agreed with and changed or developed points he
didn t care for as much. However this also means that Plato s work should be treated as the complex
original that laid ground for new political theories. Some greater differences in their visions of
Kallipolis and Utopia are in the perspectives of human relationships, agriculture and property. Even as
both hold a communist view of distribution of produce More have an universal ban of private property

The Motif of Ernest Hemingway´s A Farewell to Arms
The world contains many recurring events that remind humans of morals or things that are important.
In the novel A Farewell to Arms many events come again and again. Usually, these events that repeat
or come again have a deeper message inscribed in the text. This is not unlike whereas the novel The
Great Gatsby has weather that unfailingly matches up with the tone and mood of the text. The author
Ernest Hemingway has created A Farewell to Arms with a motif that is very precise. The motif of rain

making them recognize what they lack and how life can bring sadness.

The rain which is death the leaves which represent life, fell and rotted. Rain is a spontaneous thing and
is not scheduled, planned and is not in our power. Nature has a mind of its own and for humans or the
people in the war to have that power are supernatural which one cannot have that kind of power. Also,
humans are not capable of controlling life itself. If that were to happen in this world, there would be
chaos in power and no one would be able to die peacefully and obtain that beauty of dying a heroic
death. Life cannot be controlled and some people see death as a beauty for it takes humanity to God.
But in life, there are many things that have been with us but when we realize that it is gone, we are
burdened with our own sadness.
Ronald Oliver, a director said that Women don t know what they want. Men never know what they

The Effects Of Hearing Culture On The Deaf Culture
In light of Deaf Culture, it is truly fascinating how often hearing people rely on auditory information
to obtain knowledge from their environment. An environment, in which all cultures live, typically
releases some sort of auditory sound such as music, animal, human, and transportation noises.
Likewise, the hearing culture has access to the latest information that our world continually creates or
changes. The Deaf Culture does not have access to this auditory information that I have mentioned,
but that does that make them any less of a culture. Instead of culturally evolving around auditory
information, their culture matures through the sharing of information and stimulation of the eyes.

that I could hear every click that the dial made, in addition to the water beginning to fill. It usually
takes about twenty minutes for my clothes to wash, so I checked the clock and planned to move my
clothes from my washer to my dryer once they were done washing. Once I was finished, I walked to
my couch and I heard my feet patting my kitchen floor with every step that I took. This was a huge
eye opener for me. It made me realize that Deaf people are not able to hear the sounds around them,
nor the sounds that they make themselves. If I was not able to hear my cats, washing machine, dryer,
or alarm, I would become incredibly discouraged. It is obvious that I depend heavily on noises to alert
me. Instead of taking action to make sure things are taken care of, I rely my ears to do the work for
me.
Furthermore, and like I always do on a Sunday, I turned my television to the news channel while I
worked on homework; however, I turned the volume off and left the captions on as my only form of
access. While I was working on homework, I was obnoxiously annoyed at how quiet the room had
become. All I could hear were the noises that

Advantages Of William The Conqueror
The study of the period of 1066 has been hard for historians due to the lack of contemporary sources.
Therefore, much of the surviving material is Norman in focus and written some time after 1066. After
the death of the King, Harold readied himself for the Norman invasion which he knew must come, and
it is this fact when considered alongside the Norman perspectives, which suggest Harold s awareness
of a broken oath. He posted sentries along the coast in order that he should be given ample warning of
Harold s approach, allowing a historian to conclude that he was of a cautious disposition, a vital
quality in any commander, and that he had a good working knowledge of the tactics of war i.e. he was
not inexperienced. Furthermore, he sent at least ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Firstly, along with choosing not to rest long enough in York to travel back down with the army he had
fought at Stamford Bridge with, Harold had succeeded in alienating many of the men that had
constituted this army with his refusal not to split the treasure gained from the decimation of the
Norwegians. This decision probably had some merit in the circumstances of the time. It is entirely
possible that the gold was needed for the war against Normandy or that the booty was in the form of
boats which Harold intended to use in combat. Nonetheless, Harold s pronouncement caused outright
desertion in the troops. Secondly, despite the long stay of William s fleet at Dives and England s
superior ship fleet Harold attempted none of Drake s tactics and failed to singe William s beard.
Perhaps most importantly when one considers Harold s tactical errors was his removal of the Hastings
force. After the sighting of Halley s Comet Harold had gathered a huge force, with the threat of Harald
Hardrada some of these men, including the Hastings guard, had been redeployed. However, in
anticipation of William s attack a garrison had been left to guard the natural ports of Romney and
Dover. This is yet another example of William s supernatural luck. This is my last

I Am About The American Culture And History
Today I am about to meet my prospective grandmother from the States! I am excited to chat up with
some silent generations from America and it is my chance to soak up some American culture and
history. As a foreigner who never had the opportunity to talk to someone older than 50; it s a pleasure
to see how thing will end up. Initially, I am not expecting much nor less from the conversations, but to
my wonders, it opened my eye quite a bit to how different culture have a different style of generation
core values and perspectives in life. And as a Thailand born Taiwanese college student who flew all
the way from Asia to America, this is a blessing to experience.
My intergenerational partner, Carolyn Zeiger, is 73 years young and a retired licensed psychologist.
She used to work as a meditative practitioner for individuals who has Parkinson s Disease. Carolyn is
a Silent, and I am glad that we have something in common even before we meet in person. As the
students pair up with their intergenerational partner, I scanned the room attempting to find a lady with
short white hair and a pair of glasses (Based on her photo I saw in the intergenerational webpage).
Like a child looking for his parents, I spotted Carolyn, and she made eye contact with me. She is a bit
shorter than me, and her voice is astoundingly calm and soothing. Both of us introduced ourselves,
and we sat down to further talk about our lives. My first impression was that my partner is highly

Gender Bias in Education
Gender bias has existed in education since the inception of schooling. According to the National
Women s History Museum (NWHM), during the 1700 s, women were denied access to secondary
schooling, and were only given the most basic education deemed necessary to fulfill the women s
duties (NWHM 1). Research from the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education
(NCWGE) has shown that when Title IX was introduced in 1972, girls were able to participate in any
state funded activity, resulting in protest from those who believed gender bias did not exist (NCWGE
1). The opposition argued that girls are just different from boys, and incapable of doing the same
things. The gender bias in schools across America, since the conception of schooling, has led to
hardships and stereotypes faced by females in education and society. During the 1700 s, the education
of women was basic. Some girls were taught how to read, strictly to read the Bible, and they were
taught skills considered useful, like knitting, sewing, and other household duties. It was considered
strange and undesirable for a woman to be well educated. As the 1800 s began, female academies
began to be formed, which provided women with a similar education to men, teaching math, writing,
reading, and history, but separate of the opposite gender. Heading into the 1900 s, African American
women were finally Higgins 2 given a proper education, although separate of whites (NWHM 3).
With the creation of Title IX in

Holden s Depression in J.D. Salinger s The Catcher in the...
Everybody feels depressed at some time or another in their lives. However, it becomes a problem
when depression is so much a part of a person s life that he or she can no longer experience happiness.
This happens to the young boy, Holden Caulfield in J.D Salinger s novel, The Catcher in the Rye. Mr.
Antolini accurately views the cause of Holden s depression as his lack of personal motivation, his
inability to self reflect and his stubbornness to overlook the obvious which collectively results in him
giving up on life before he ever really has a chance to get it started. Holden lacks the essential ability
to motivate himself, which he needs to survive in the real world. He continues to be kicked out of

that, you?re going to start getting closer and closer ? that is, if you want to and if you look for it and
wait for it ? to the kind of information that will be very, very dear to your heart? (189). Nevertheless
Holden has so much personal pride he refuses lower him to that level. For if he does, in his eyes, he
will be the same as all those other ?Phony Ivy League bastards? (85). As a result of Holden giving up
on school, he is unable to proceed with the natural evolution that must occur for him to move on in
society. Mr. Antolini later points out to him ?Learning is a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it
isn?t education. It?s history. It?s poetry? (189). His goal for Holden being to see school as something
he loves and not something he is being forced to do. Mr. Antolini tried to give Holden a reason to be
motivated and in which case not to give up so easily. Holden is quite skilled at citing exactly what is
wrong with other people. However he never acknowledges his own faults. He was sure the entire

Race Relations In American Society
Race relations in American society were a reflection on American consumerism; this consumer society
was directly tied to how Americans accessed consumer goods. Jim Crow laws dictated how and what
African Americans were permitted to consume and the creation of consumer credit redefined what
African Americans could afford to consume. The expansion of consumption under the creation of
consumer credit in the 1920s and the creation of Jim Crow laws from 1890s to the mid 1960s were
two major events that restricted African Americans from fully participating in the Consumer Society
that was being created. Jim Crow laws naturalized inequality by dignifying white work and
consumption while also degrading black work and consumption. They came to be once ... Show more

In the 1920s, automobiles began to be financed through consumer credit, as they were no longer seen
as luxury goods. Soon after the automobile finance wave emerged, financing spread to other durable
goods like televisions, radios, and the vacuums. As installment credit carried high interest rates
financing consumer credit became for the first time ever profitable, lending for the sake of
consumption appeared as people only saw low payments when taking into consideration purchasing a
durable good. The American Way of Debt Consumer by Hyman illustrates how automobile financing
came to be a person would purchase an automobile through a dealer. They would sign the dealer s
papers and agree to make payments for say 24 months and some fees for putting it all together. Once
this is all completed the dealer would take the contract and sell it to General Motors Acceptance

sales and profits. This was facilitated by the private car manufactures and in the case of mortgages by
the federal government. Consumer credit exploded and remade society in its entirety; is now meant
that your ability to consume was no longer tied to your wealth, but to how much you were expected to
produce in wages. Turing that future income into present consumption was what the consumer credit

IV. OPTIMIZING AVAILABILITY PROVISIONING IN NFV
Even though the efficiency is greatly improved, our framework is still impractical in the sense that the
process can be further prolonged with 1) a even higher availability requirement, which is normal in a
carrier class network [18] (usually requires an availability of 99.999% or 99.9999% (5 9s or 6 9s)); 2)
more requests; and 3) longer contract period duration. The root cause the process takes such a long
time is it depends on the strategy we use to provision backups and how many backups are needed. In
other words, if we can accurately estimate the least possible number of backups needed without
running the trial and error process, a great amount of running time can be saved. The process ... Show

Chinese Medicine Vs Greek Medicine Essay
Similarities and Differences between Greek and Chinese Medicine When one compares Greek
medical philosophy to Chinese medical philosophy there will be distinct similarities and differences
that stand out. These similarities and differences become apparent when comparing natural and
supernatural beliefs, as well as when researching the functions and physiology of the body itself.
Another fascinating point, both Greek and Chinese medical philosophy believed in magic and used it
when practicing medicine. Both philosophies believed in the idea of dramatic wind change in regards
to sickness. There is also a cautious balance both perceived by Greek and Chinese medical philosophy
between the body and the seasons, and five natural phenomena. Most Greek practitioners believed in

connection between elements is a process of destruction and regeneration that is perceived to be

Business Experience and Analogy
OM: Design of Goods and Services
Definition: the Design of Goods and Services is fairly much of the transformation process in a firm.
The design of process is extremely influential in determining decisions relating to business elements
such as Cost, quality, human resources. Additionally, to survive in the business arena, a firm must
design goods and services to meet the needs and wants of their customers (Heizer Render, 2011). 1:
One component in the design of products is the processes that the products pass through. Rogo and his
team discussed this process as they reviewed the process of work in progress with Stacey on those
parts that go through the robot area while trying to determine the bottlenecks within the company
2: Another component in the designing products is the maximization of the number of adequate
products produced by having Quality control process moved to the beginning of the bottleneck so that
the bottleneck only process good parts. Technological advancement and innovations have prompted
companies like CVS to redesign their workflow spaces and workflow to accommodate their newly
developed minute clinics or specialty clinics. The newly developed clinics which are currently
providing faster, affordable, quality healthcare to the CVS customers has greatly enhanced the
profitability of the company within the market.

Hip Hop Politics, Class Unity And The Internet
In this essay, the influence of hip hop politics, class unity and the internet will be explored to discover
how the consumer became an active producer of culture. In the early days of hip hop, particularly
from its mainstream origins in the 70 s (Dimitriadis 2009) up until the 90 s, the underground scene
rarely floated into the mainstream. Despite a good portion of the underground consisting of
consumers, to achieve mainstream success one would need the right connections and musical
equipment. Before these tools became affordable and accessible, the consumer wasn t integrated as an
active producer of culture. Thus the average consumer wasn t capable of making major waves in the
industry. In some respect, the mainstream producer carried a sense of prestige because there were only
a few who garnered attention in the mainstream such as DJ Premier and Eric B and Rakim (Tom
Terrell, 1998). During the early origins of hip hop, as Josh Kun describes, hip hop was mainly a facet
of African American culture. As a result, many consumers from other backgrounds weren t majorly
included in developing the hip hop culture. This, however, changed when icons such as Run DMC and
Aerosmith broadened the scope of hip hop and allowed more consumers to play an active role in
producing the culture. The popularity of the internet rose in the early 2000 s and it allowed the
consumer to actively shape the culture. The internet allowed the consumer to create their own sounds
and message and deliver it

Early in 1874 Bell met Thomas A. Watson, a young machinist at a Boston electrical shop. Watson
became Bell s indispensable assistant, bringing to Bell s experiments the crucial ingredient that had

hours experimenting (Paschoff 43,44). Although Bell formed the basic concept of the telephone using
a varying but unbroken electric current to transmit the varying sound waves of human speech, in the
summer of 1874, Hubbard insisted that the young inventor focus his efforts on the harmonic telegraph
instead. Bell wanted to continue his work on the telephone but he complied. When he patented one of
his telegraph designs in February 1875, he found that Elisha Gray had patented a multiple telegraph
two days earlier. Greatly discouraged, Bell consulted in Washington with the elderly Joseph Henry,
who urged Bell to pursue his germ of a great invention speech transmission (Grosvenor and Wesson

telephone in mind. By accident on a June day in 1875, an intermittent transmitter produced a steady
current and transmitted sound, when Watson tightened or loosened a particular screw it produced a
sound that would vary in pitch. Bell had proof of his 1874 idea; he quickly

The Sculpture On South Campus At Moravian College
The sculpture on South Campus at Moravian College commonly known as Moravian Roots One and
Two, who was created by Steve Tobin in 2010 has a significant meaning behind the moderately new
sculpture. There are two of the same types of sculptures in the same place, just distance away from
one another. This sculpture seems to be abstract, since we are taking the form of what it looks like to
create a meaning, which can be something different in other people s eyes. The sculpture is a dark
black shade that naturally blends in with the surroundings, therefore making it blend in with its natural
surroundings. The negative space between the roots are easily seen since its roots are based in various
directions, showing us how far the roots of the sculpture and realistically Moravian has grown. There
is no base or pedestals for these two sculptures who go hand in hand together, but it is roughly around
five feet standing upward and going in sporadic directions, to signify differences. They are roundly
shaped with carved pointed edges giving the image that it is like a tree root or branch, being slightly
pointed on the top. The inner parts of the tree roots are textured off to have a little dots making it a bit
rougher than the soft and smooth outer sides that we see from a distance. There seems to be no said
real front or back side to this piece because the tree roots go in different directions, therefore giving
the observer a chance to decide which way they would like to view it.

with this more efficient way of working, competition from cheaper less skilled workers... created job

What Is The Theme Of The Sign Of Four
The sign of four is a novel written by Arthur Conan Doyle. It was written in 1888. The plot of the
novel talks about a number of topics such as murder, hidden treasure, a pact among four persons and
corrupt prison guards. As a result, we can conclude that it is a detective novel. However, the novel
tries to talk about India which was one of the British colonies. In this novel, there is much focus on the
Indian Mutiny that happened in 1857. The sign of four is also a novel about the Victorian abroad. The

facilitated the formation of societal anxieties within Britain, The Sign of Four suggests that late
nineteenth century British society continued to consider the colonies as attractive possessions. Doyle s
portrayal of India as an alluring and exotic milieu is characteristic of popular nineteenth century
colonial conceptions, as many Western artists and poets often romanticized the behaviors and

The Positive And Negative Implications Of Social...
The positive and negative implications of social networking sites. Introduction Social networking sites
have become a big part of our lives. These sites are indeed twofold, and their impact on society is both
positive and negative. My essay will, therefore try to answer both sides of the impact social
networking sites have in today s culture. A website article by (Shruti Tripathi Chopra 2015) stated that
in 2008 Facebook made and estimated $300 million, that rose to a profit in 2014 of $2.9. The positive
implications of social networking sites have no boundaries. Communication between people in the
past was, either over the phone or via letter, just to mention a few. (Pewinternet.org 2005) published
that just 7% of American adults used social networking sites, and then rising to 65% by 2015. As a
result, in this growth and popularity, jobs have been created to meet the demands of social networking
sites. It was surely inevitable, that the growth and impact of social networking sites would influence
how most of us live our lives today. A great way to share your recent photographs, ideas, general chat
or just keep in contact with loved ones who live far away, is through the social networking sites. This
being a very positive side, it has all but demolished the barriers that prevented loved ones from

Analysis of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
Analysis of ‘Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck ‘Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck is a classic
novel, tragedy, written in a social tone. The authorial attitude is idyllic, however, as the story develops
it changes into skeptic. It is evident that Steinbeck knew the setting and places he is writing about. In
my opinion Steinbeck drew the subject matter from his own experience of working on ranches, he was
interested in special kinds of relationships among men working on ranches with him. There are several
themes in the novel. The main theme is the careless nature of people caused by weakness. Nearly all
the characters, including George, Lennie, Candy, Crooks and Curley s wife feel lonely, isolated and
weak and they try to destroy those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women have no place in the author s idealized vision of a world structured around the brotherly bonds
of men, because they only cause troubles. Material – the novel takes place in California in the 1930s.
Steinbeck describes life of wage labourers without permanent home, who work on ranches. There are
also mentioned problems of the American apartheid society. The novel is told from the point of view
of a third person objective narrator. Diction and language style are conformed to the setting of the
novel. Steinbeck uses Standard English for the authorial speech, for the direct speech he uses
colloquial English, very often with slang and argot spoken among people working on ranches. Using
argot and vulgarisms helps to characterize protagonists of the novel. Steinbeck also uses similes,
metonymies and metaphors to describe countryside, places and things. The speech of characters
predominates over the authorial speech and is realized by direct speech and dialogues. Steinbeck
precisely describes places and characters. Inner characterization results from behaviour of characters.
All his characters are straight defined. Lennie a large, childlike migrant worker. Due to his mental
disability, Lennie completely depends upon George, his friend and traveling companion. Although he
is among the principal characters in the novel, he

Four Ways To Get The Car Of Your Dreams Without Going Broke
If your heart skips a beat every time you see a certain make or model of car and the one you re driving
is on its last leg, it s time to go shopping! However, affording the car of your dreams can be next to
impossible on a tight budget. Here are five ways to put yourself into the vehicle you really want, even
though your finances force you to be frugal.
1. Find New Ways To Save More Money
The higher the down payment you apply to the price of a vehicle, the lower your monthly payments
will be, thus, if you can figure out ways to save more money and drop more cash at the point of
purchase, you can look for the car of your dreams, rather than whatever is on sale.
Evaluate your spending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why not ask a local dealer to look on your behalf? If they know you re serious, they will keep an eye
out for you, watching for your preferred model and specifications. While there will be fees added to
the auction price to cover the dealer s expenses, you re still going to end up with a good deal.
4. Buy Basic And Pimp The Vehicle Later
Paying cash or financing your used vehicle will be cheaper if there are fewer bells and whistles
installed and might land you behind the wheel faster than if you have to look around for a well
equipped model. You could budget things like a stereo, window tint and mag wheels over the course
of the next year, rather than factoring those expenses into your monthly payment or up front costs
when paying cash. Customizing the car later could be a lot of fun and doing it on your terms means
considerable savings.
Finding the perfect car for yourself on terms you can live with isn t easy, but the more educated and
creative you are, the more doors you will open for yourself. Talk to a dealer, examine all your options
and make the necessary moves that will put you behind the wheel of something you really love and
can

My tan forearm barred no watch; no stripe of pale skin to indicate a childhood subject to the constraints of Tick and Tock. A timeless realm, the lake emancipated the soul and the body, allowing both to mingle with nature. My bare, unpainted toes were always covered with mud from walking the trail around Apache Lake, past the little outhouse, Carp Cove, but not as far as Hodgson s dusty old cabin. It was difficult to see from the road, and at times I felt nobody ever went there but me. Tall yellowed grasses embraced the water s rocky edge like a mother s protective hug. Haiyi Zhu and Bernardo A. Huberman, the authors of the study, were interested in studying how often peoples choices are affected by other individuals endorsements. The hypothesis of the study is that individuals are more likely to reverse their opinions when the reversion causes less self inconsistency (the confirmation pressure is weaker) or the opposing social opinions are stronger (the conformity pressure is stronger) . Methodology The researchers conducted various online experiments. The participants in the study went to the Rankr website to select their preference of one image out of two images displayed. They first did this with no knowledge of what people before them picked. The second time the participants had indications of what others had chosen. The researchers were trying to determine whether seeing other peoples preferences affected the participants choices. This setup allowed for social influence to be measured based on if people changed their selections between the two instances. The researchers wanted to see if the participants changed their mind after seeing what others preferred. As a foreigner who never had the opportunity to talk to someone older than 50; it s a pleasure to see how thing will end up. Initially, I am not expecting much nor less from the conversations, but to my wonders, it opened my eye quite a bit to how different culture have a different style of generation core values and perspectives in life. And as a Thailand born Taiwanese college student who flew all the way from Asia to America, this is a blessing to experience. My intergenerational partner, Carolyn Zeiger, is 73 years young and a retired licensed psychologist. She used to work as a meditative practitioner for individuals who has Parkinson s Disease. Carolyn is a Silent, and I am glad that we have something in common even before we meet in person. As the students pair up with their intergenerational partner, I scanned the room attempting to find a lady with short white hair and a pair of glasses (Based on her photo I saw in the intergenerational webpage). Like a child looking for his parents, I spotted Carolyn, and she made eye contact with me. She is a bit shorter than me, and her voice is astoundingly calm and soothing. Both of us introduced ourselves, and we sat down to further talk about our lives. My first impression was that my partner is highly educated, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Gender Bias in Education Gender bias has existed in education since the inception of schooling. According to the National Women s History Museum (NWHM), during the 1700 s, women were denied access to secondary schooling, and were only given the most basic education deemed necessary to fulfill the women s duties (NWHM 1). Research from the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education (NCWGE) has shown that when Title IX was introduced in 1972, girls were able to participate in any state funded activity, resulting in protest from those who believed gender bias did not exist (NCWGE 1). The opposition argued that girls are just different from boys, and incapable of doing the same things. The gender bias in schools across America, since the conception of schooling, has led to hardships and stereotypes faced by females in education and society. During the 1700 s, the education of women was basic. Some girls were taught how to read, strictly to read the Bible, and they were taught skills considered useful, like knitting, sewing, and other household duties. It was considered strange and undesirable for a woman to be well educated. As the 1800 s began, female academies began to be formed, which provided women with a similar education to men, teaching math, writing, reading, and history, but separate of the opposite gender. Heading into the 1900 s, African American women were finally Higgins 2 given a proper education, although separate of whites (NWHM 3). With the creation of Title IX in ... However, it becomes a problem when depression is so much a part of a person s life that he or she can no longer experience happiness. This happens to the young boy, Holden Caulfield in J.D Salinger s novel, The Catcher in the Rye. Mr. Antolini accurately views the cause of Holden s depression as his lack of personal motivation, his inability to self reflect and his stubbornness to overlook the obvious which collectively results in him giving up on life before he ever really has a chance to get it started. Race Relations In American Society Race relations in American society were a reflection on American consumerism; this consumer society was directly tied to how Americans accessed consumer goods. Jim Crow laws dictated how and what African Americans were permitted to consume and the creation of consumer credit redefined what African Americans could afford to consume. The expansion of consumption under the creation of consumer credit in the 1920s and the creation of Jim Crow laws from 1890s to the mid 1960s were two major events that restricted African Americans from fully participating in the Consumer Society that was being created. OPTIMIZING AVAILABILITY PROVISIONING IN NFV Even though the efficiency is greatly improved, our framework is still impractical in the sense that the process can be further prolonged with 1) a even higher availability requirement, which is normal in a carrier class network [18] (usually requires an availability of 99.999% or 99.9999% (5 9s or 6 9s)); 2) more requests; and 3) longer contract period duration. The root cause the process takes such a long time is it depends on the strategy we use to provision backups and how many backups are needed. • 30. Hip Hop Politics, Class Unity And The Internet In this essay, the influence of hip hop politics, class unity and the internet will be explored to discover how the consumer became an active producer of culture. In the early days of hip hop, particularly from its mainstream origins in the 70 s (Dimitriadis 2009) up until the 90 s, the underground scene rarely floated into the mainstream. Despite a good portion of the underground consisting of consumers, to achieve mainstream success one would need the right connections and musical equipment. Before these tools became affordable and accessible, the consumer wasn t integrated as an active producer of culture. Thus the average consumer wasn t capable of making major waves in the industry. In some respect, the mainstream producer carried a sense of prestige because there were only a few who garnered attention in the mainstream such as DJ Premier and Eric B and Rakim (Tom Terrell, 1998). During the early origins of hip hop, as Josh Kun describes, hip hop was mainly a facet of African American culture. As a result, many consumers from other backgrounds weren t majorly included in developing the hip hop culture. This, however, changed when icons such as Run DMC and Aerosmith broadened the scope of hip hop and allowed more consumers to play an active role in producing the culture. The popularity of the internet rose in the early 2000 s and it allowed the consumer to actively shape the culture.
