Essay About Ice Hockey
Ice hockey is a very fun and active sport a lots of people enjoy it because they can be a little rough.
You can push people over and just rough house. In the olympics they decided to put ice hockey
because they thought it was really interesting sport and they also put it in like 1875. They really like
ice hockey because you can spice up things and have fun if you know how to use skates.
The point of the game is to indicate a position in side the opposition blue line along the edges of the
rings. Two teams of skates use their sticks to shoot a rubber puck into the opponent to make a point.
The team gets points of they hit the puck into the net. Well they are scored by getting the puck in to
the net from the opposite team. They are calculated by how many times the puck gets into the net.
What ever team has the most points at the end will win the game. A game is 60 min long which is
broken up into 20 min of playing time. In both men and women ice hockey they have a record. the
record for the men is a slam shot. The fastest slam shot was from Denis Kulyash. It was 110.3 mph it
was the fastest tell Bernie Geoffrey bet his shot. In the women s records are the fastest score shot in

They use ice skates so they can move more efficiently and quicker when they are on the ice . They
will wear all this stuff to make sure that they will not get hurt if they get hit. Playing ice hockey is a
really big caution to play. Lots of people get hurt by playing ice hockey. And some people would get
hit by the puck. And also people get high sticking which is a foul. And if someone high sticks it they
could hit someone in the face the shins or the stomach. All of the padding is for their own good so
they will not get hurt or cause damage to others or

Micro Celebrity Performance Analysis
Beginning around 2003, new kinds of websites and services appeared that made it much easier for
people to assemble multifaceted networks devoted to the cataloguing and exchange of personal
information and content. On Valentine s Day of 2005 one of these multifaceted networks, YouTube,
was founded. The ability to Broadcast Yourself through user generated videos opened space for new
digital communities where people could create videos, share them, comment on them, and manifest
large public responses to them. Seven years later YouTube is now home to billions of viewers who
upload more than 100 million videos per day and is the hub for the self marketing of, the now coined,

However, due to the affinity brought about by the structure of YouTube as a community driven SNS,
this selective performance becomes a fully adopted identity. This selective identity is who your
audience knows you by as this is the only aspect of yourself you portray to them. It is also who they
have decided to embrace into their community and create bonds of affinity with. Therefore for
YouTube personalities, they become this person to the world rather than simply portray it. It is as
simple as being, for example an actor plays the part of a character in a movie and then takes off that
mask when they step back into the real world. Rather it is showcasing a selective part of your true
personality and then becoming that part of your personality to the world. This is the difference
between the new micro YouTube celebrity and traditional celebrities:

Reflection Paper On Figure Skating
The second my feet lifted off the soap caked floor, I felt different. The skin on my neck was tingling,
adrenaline was racing through my body, and my bones were engaged in a newfound excitement. My
mother was wrong. The bathroom floor is a fun place to go figure skating on soap suds. My sister,
Emily, and I began our skating journey at Kent State University, where we had been enrolled in Learn
To Skate classes for as long as we could remember. Spinning circles faster than a horse around the
kitchen table in our socks was a common occurrence. We were perpetually moving.
Thus, it should not have been a surprising event when one lazy Saturday morning, Emily and I were
sitting around playing dolls as we waited for our parents to wake up. For a six and nine year with the
energy of a small volcano, it was as boring as sitting and watching paint dry. It is my Achilles heel to
cause trouble when my mind is not stimulated, so I ventured off down the hall into the bathroom to
see if there would be anything interesting to do there. My sister grabbed my hand and pulled me into a
somewhat tangled, clumsy dance that was supposed to represent the figure skating we did at Kent. We
couldn t have looked much better than the Cleveland Browns playing football, but for us, we felt as if
we would be going to the Olympics in figure skating within the next few weeks. However, spinning
around in our socks eventually grew tiring, as well, so we looked for a way to make the bathroom
floor truly

Similarities Between George Orwell And Animal Farm
Animal Farm is a novel written by English writer George Orwell (1903 1950). The book is about
animals rising and taking over a farm after years of being abused by the human owners. However, the
book has many parallels The Russian Revolution, such as the Animals need to take over the farm and
exile Mr Jones, how Snowball is exiled from animal farm and how Napoleon becomes just like the
very thing the animals sought to exile from their farm.
The overtaking of Manor Farm represents many events that took place during The Russian
Revolution. Firstly, Old Majors speech about how life is miserable and how all animals are equal
draws many parallels with Karl Marx s Communist Manifesto, a book about the basics of
communism. Karl Marx, just like old Major was considered the Father of Communism, just like how
Old Major was Considered the Father of Animalism. Furthermore, Mr Jones, the owner of the farm, is
very similar the current ruler at the time, Tsar Nicholas II. Mr Jones, just like Nicholas II, was very
unpopular amongst his people. He did not really want to rule and did not care for the people whom he
led. Eventually, both leaders were exiled by the people. Overall, through the many similarities
between the rulers of pre rebellion Russia and Manor Farm, and the parallels between Karl Marx and
Old Major, it is difficult to miss the similarities between Animal Farm and Stalinist Russia.
The two battles that take place during Animal Farm represent The Russian Civil War and World

Machiavelli s The Prince By Niccolo Machiavelli
Niccolò Machiavelli s The Prince is a book that examines the qualities and strategies required for a
ruler in order to maintain power. Despite being composed in the 16th century, the ideas presented are
applicable even to mythical kings from texts over a thousand years ago. Throughout the story of
Seneca s Oedipus, substantial connections could be made between Oedipus and The Prince s ideas of
rule, such as methods in acquiring principalities, channeling subjects fear, the use of cruelty and
controlling circumstance. In this essay, I will first talk about these ideas presented in The Prince, then
suggest how Machiavelli might evaluate the character, strategies, leadership, and fortunes of Seneca s
Oedipus. Based on these four factors, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But I did unlash the knot of her enigma s webbed deceit, the grimly riddling song of the winged beast.
Jocasta: .... Thebes scepter was your prize for glorious deeds, your payment for destruction of the
Sphinx. (Seneca 203)
Machiavelli might assess that Oedipus obtains his kingship of Thebes by solving the Sphinx s riddle
with his wits and wisdom. In spite of the danger he faces, he does not shy away from the opportunity
of saving the city. Although Oedipus experiences great difficulty in attaining power, Machiavelli
would have faith in his ability to maintain it, because Oedipus acquires his principality through his
own arms and ability.
Furthermore, Machiavelli presents ideas about the qualities that rulers should have in order to avoid
contempt in Chapter XIX:
What will make him despised is being considered inconstant, frivolous, effeminate, pusillanimous and
irresolute... He should contrive that that his actions should display grandeur, courage, seriousness and
strength. (Machiavelli 64)
In fact, Jocasta echoes these ideas in her advice to Oedipus as he is confronted with the plague:
Being king, I think, means this: coming to grips with what confronts you. The harder it is to stand, the
more power s burden slips and slides, the more determinedly you must take your stand. Be brave!

As I walked toward the bright red sign that flashed emergency, I had no idea that I was about to

throat was closing in on itself. After a few deep breaths I turned around and began to focus only on the
medical treatment being provided. The storm of emotions that was brewing inside of me was kept at
bay for the moment. Instantly, I became infatuated with all of the medical procedures that were being

Poverty Is The State Of Having Little Or No Money
Poverty is the state of having little or no money, goods, circumstance of being poor. One out of seven
people in the United States live in poverty, Approximately 50 million Americans one in six people
struggle with hunger, many are children. How is the U.S. poverty line determined? First established in
1965 by the social security administration, the poverty line was based on an assumption that the
average family must spend about one third of its total income on food. The official poverty line was
determined by a family market basket at low cost food budget that contains a minimum level of
nutrition for a family multiplied by three to allow for nonfood cost such as rent and utilities. At a
poverty line of $1.25per day, more than 1.4 billion people live in absolute poverty which is a condition
that exists when people do not have the means to secure the most basic necessities of life. While
others live in relative poverty that is a condition that exists when people can afford basic such as food,
clothing, and shelter but cannot maintain an average standard of living in comparison to that of other
members of their society or group. The United States has a number of class divisions that are
characterized by widely diverse lifestyles and life chances. Upper class is the wealthiest and most
powerful class, Upper middle class is composed of professional s (ex. Attorneys, physicians). Middle
class are white collar office workers (ex. Teachers, nurses). Working class are considered

Atlanta Exposition Speech
Outside Reading Assignment One
The Atlanta Exposition Speech by Booker T. Washington, The Talented Tenth but W.E.B. DuBois, and
The Negro s Place in American Life at the Present Day by T. Thomas Fortune were written during the
end of the nineteenth century when African Americans were faced with great challenges on a range of
different levels. These documents are very like one another considering they are all addressing the
same issues, but I also feel like each of them are unique from one another because of the person who
wrote them. Washington focuses more on an industrial education so the blacks can go to school. He
has the whites to believe that it will also affect them and make things better for them at the time and

Thomas Fortune has more of gradualism approach to it. He is more focused on getting the attention
for the white audience and get the respect from them. Fortune asks, What is the Negro s place in
American life at the present day? (2). He says that the answer depends on the point of view of the
person and I greatly agree with that statement because I could believe completely differently from the
person sitting directly beside me on the situation. Sadly, blacks and whites were not always treated the
same way and still aren t always treated in the same ways today either. Fortune states, There can be no
healthy growth in the life of race or a nation without a self reliant spirit animating the whole body...
(4). I feel like this statement is something that is important in this speech. It touches on how there is
nothing healthy about not having equal rights between whites and blacks. Few blacks can trace back
their ancestors as easily as it for whites, because they don t have an ancestry. This made it very hard
on them because, unlike the whites, they would have had nothing to fall back on. Whites just had it a
lot easier and honestly still do. People believe that there isn t any more racism, but it s very hard for
me to believe that after so many years of this occurring for it to just completely stop. In my opinion,
giving blacks the rights that they deserve will make things differently because

Similarities Between The Birthmark And The Eye Of The...
The Birthmark and The Eye of the Beholder are both texts that deal with man s pursuit of perfection,
and how the conception of beauty is formed in society. However, these texts use very different literary
devices to make their points. While Hawthorne uses verisimilitude, paradox, and the antithesis
between Aylmer s view of the hand and everyone else s view to show that trying to create beauty and
perfection out of nature will only end in disaster in his book, Serling uses irony to create the round
character of Janet Tyler to show that beauty and perfection are relative, and how you view yourself is
more important than how society views you.

Janet almost succumbed to despair and tried to kill herself, but was able to go on because she realized
how she was more than just how some people saw her, she could be beautiful to herself. This contrasts
with The Birthmark, where Georgiana was completely flat. She was just a passive acceptor of her fate
from Aylmer. This passiveness contributed to the fact that beauty was her defining characteristic to the
other characters and Hawthorne. This contrast between the two characters shows that how you view
your own beauty ends up being much more important than how others view you.
Serling s ending is a perfect usage of irony. We cannot see the faces of anybody until the end of the
episode, where we learn that the patient is beautiful by the standards of most people, whereas the
doctor and the nurses are all ugly pig looking humans. This sense of irony shows that people all have
different ideals of beauty, and you can destroy a treasure if you don t appreciate that beauty. This is
similar to the message of The Birthmark, because Aylmer just wanted to change what he saw as ugly,
but what everyone else saw as beautiful, truly proving that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

During Europe s Age of Enlightenment (1675 1800) new philosophies on human rights and liberties
were developed. The ideas of Locke and Descartes had a revolutionary influence on politics and
society; these new concepts fueled a growing debate about the role of women in public life. These
arguments would take seed in the new nation of America, and blossom into immense social and
political change in the following decades. During the nineteenth century, American women expanded
into more public spheres by aggressively leveraging new technology and social movements. With the

The Destruction Of The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant
The destruction of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March 2011, caused by an
earthquake and subsequent tsunami, resulted in massive radioactive contamination of the Japanese
mainland. In November 2011, the Japanese Science Ministry reported that long lived radioactive
cesium had contaminated 11,580 square miles of the land surface of Japan. Approximately 4,500
square miles an area almost the size of Connecticut was found to have radiation levels that exceeded
Japan s allowable exposure rate of 1 mSV (millisievert) per year. For perspective, 1 mSV is equivalent
to 100 milliRem, which is the standard unit of dose used here at the shipyard. In a normal background
radiation field, an individual is exposed to .02 milliRem/hr dose. Studies of the disaster have identified
design changes, response actions and other safety improvements that could have reduced the amount
of radioactivity released from the plant. As a result, nuclear plant safety requirements around the
world have been reexamined, including here in the United States. Figure 1 shows normal operation of
a reactor along with the meltdown process to put in to perspective the summary of Fukushima Daiichi
disaster events. In Short it does something like this: The Tohoku earthquake, March 11 2011, triggered

Sports Supplements Essay
Sports Supplements
Athletes are competitive. They go out there to win. But, at all costs? Why are athletes willing to
sacrifice their long term health in order to have one outstanding season? Will it be worth it when they
are hooked up to machines in order to stay alive? Many athletes do not think that taking a supplement
will harm them. They are strong, tough athletes, nothing can harm them, right? So, they start taking
creatine or andro, or both. For most, they lose body fat, gain strength and muscle. That sounds great,
but that is not always what happens. The use of over the counter sports supplements is dangerous and

Androstenedione (Andro) is a hormonally based supplement that is supposed to help weight lifters add
muscle. Andro is taken orally and goes to the liver. The liver destroys most of what is ingested, but
what does survive combines with various enzymes and temporarily boosts testosterone levels. This
boost in testosterone allows an athlete to perform at a level above what he usually does.
quot;Androstendione is an honest to goodness steroid and a precursor to testosterone. quot; If an
athlete takes andro before he goes to the gym, he will be able to lift more, and thus increase strength

they do. quot; Many endocrinologists insist that the differences between supplements like
androstenedione and traditional steroids (which are legal only for certain medical conditions) are

Music Piracy And Civil Law
Music piracy is an infringement that involve the copying or selling of creative works that which the
copyright owner, composer, or artist did not consent to. Before the invention of newer technology that
allowed for the piracy process to become less difficult, music piracy was much easier to control. With
this new and improved technology of the 21st century, users of the web began adding media files to
the internet, which made all previous difficulties substantially less challenging. It was much easier for
people with little to no knowledge of technology and old piracy methods to gather media files. Piracy
may seem petty, but the effects are major. Not only is it illegal, when music is copied and or shared the
value decreases with each download. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many citizens are unaware that downloading music although free is illegal and others may think of
piracy as a victimless. Individual artists, ranging from celebrity musical acts like Metallica to the stay
at home mothers who sell digital scrapbooking kits in their free time, frequently speak out against
piracy when talking to their fans. Grassroots organizations also work to educate the public about
music property rights through online marketing campaigns. Technology has given the Music
companies a fighting chance in preventing music piracy. Software programs can be created to require
authorization codes or online registration forms that make piracy more difficult because they are only
given with legal copies. For downloadable content, digital rights management systems limit the
number of devices that can play a particular movie or song in order to stop people from sharing
unauthorized copies. Unfortunately, there are still resourceful hackers and people in the piracy

My First Accounting Position For A National...
Financial Statement Research
I am very excited to shine in my first accounting position for a national telecommunications company.
My supervisor approached me regarding the controller s concerns as the company profits are down for
the past fiscal year compared to the last five years. Therefore, I have been asked to do the following:
Make a simple adjustment by recalculating the depreciation from five years to ten years. Since the
machine is paid, the depreciation really does not matter.
Make an adjusting journal entry by transferring repairs and maintenance expenses to capital assets.
Depreciation and Journal Expense Adjustments
Depreciation is the process of allocating the cost of an asset to expense over its useful life. It is an
annual allowance for the wear and tear, deterioration or obsolescence of the property. According to the
IRS, in order for a taxpayer to be allowed a depreciation deduction for a property, the taxpayer must
own the property (IRS 2015). Therefore, the supervisor s claim that the depreciation thing does not
matter since the equipment is paid is inaccurate. We own the property; therefore, the recalculation can
occur in the following circumstances:
Wear and tear or obsolescence can indicate an inadequate or excessive equipment value, therefore the
company, can change the amount of the depreciation expense.
Additions and improvements occur which increase the operating efficiency or expected useful life of
the asset. Since these

What to Look For
The system should be visually inspected which means a tower climb or a high resolution drone video
to each of the lighting fixtures all beacons and sidelights. The inspection should look for ultraviolet
(UV) damage, cracks, crazing, dirt buildup, etc. The etc. in this instance could include unwanted
deposits on the outside of the lens (think bird poop as an example), or unwanted deposits on the inside
of the lens. LumenServe℠ has seen instances where material inside a legacy lighting system, such as
certain types of tape, are vaporized and then deposited on the inside of the lens. This is a result of a
poor installation and must be addressed. Certain older models of lighting lenses are made of older
plastics that are effected by UV rays resulting in crazing. Old glass lenses can chip. The bottom line is
the inspection relies on the reasonable judgement of the inspector to determine if the lens performance
is degraded in some manner and decreasing the system s certified output. No light meter or
measurement is required, just a thorough inspection and reasonable determination of the status of each
lens.
How Often to Inspect
The requirement states that light fixture lenses should be visually inspected every 24 months, or when
the light fixture fails. Failure of the fixture indicates that the fixture must be repaired and thus makes

Art Vs. Art Education
Art is defined as the expression or application of humans creative skills and imagination. Art is found
in almost everywhere in our day to day lives. Without peoples imagination and creative skills we
wouldn t have buildings, technology and entertainment. Creativity is a important subject in society, yet
the subject being taught in schools is on a decline. How can we live in such an advancing society
when our future generations are not learning how to use their imagination or how to apply their
creative skills? Although people argue that more class time needs to be put towards math and science
classes, art classes need to increase in our schools. Art has many benefits on the brain and Students
who have access to arts in or out of school tend to have better academic results, better workforce
opportunities, and more civic engagement (National Endowment for the Arts). Art education needs to
improve because it is a helpful stress reliever, important for childhood development and helps students
succeed in school and life. Many people underestimate the benefits of art on the brain. Art not only is
a great stress reliever, but it is also a tool used to clear your head and help tackle issues causing stress.
A study done by the University of Westminer found that taking a 30 min trip to a art museum can
significantly lower your stress level (Bergado). Observing art also sparks parts of the brain that are
associated with emotions and contemplations, even if you are not looking

Air Jordan Vs Converse Essay
Footwear also known as shoes was invented to protect a person s foot while doing various activities,
primarily created for functional and practical use. However, shoe design has constantly evolved
throughout history and from culture to culture. The notion of complementing your outfit with the
perfect shoe has been the impetus of design and many styles of shoes; such as high heels, flats and
sneakers. Modern footwear varies widely in design, comfortability and cost. Nike is a multinational
company that offers many types of footwear and has been a leading pioneer in the retail market for
decades. Air Jordan s and Converse are notably Nike s most proverbial brands. These two brands are a

The demand for different designs and styles, eventually changed the cost and the history of these
ordinary sneakers. Air Jordan s , notably the most famous sneaker ever made, is designed and owned
by Michael Jordan. Footwear sales sky rocketed in 1984, when Michael Jordan signed a contract to
wear the now famous Air Jordan. Air Jordan is manufactured in China and allegedly costs Nike a little
over $16 to make a pair. Yet, Air Jordan s are priced at anywhere between $100 to $600 a pair,
depending on the style and color.
The pricing strategy for this brand is value based. The selling price is determined not by the cost of the
goods, but by the status that buyers think they are valued. Consumers measure the quality of Air
Jordan s by the quality of Michael Jordan s skillful tactics on the basketball courts and are willing to
pay a pretty penny to be like Mike, hence their well known motto I want to be, I want to be like Mike.

The Pacific as we know today was not always as it was implied. There were a variety of perspectives
of The Pacific. Whether it was perceptions of the people, the culture and their way of life, these
perceptions eventually changed over time. Many westerners categorised the pacific islands as a land of

According to ethnographers who studied the pacific there are two contrasting groups of people. On the
one hand there was the view of soft primitivism which was represented by the Tahitians and
Hawaiians. Life was portrayed as being easy, and people were pure and guileless. Their lives were
filled with pleasure and uninhibited sex. On the other hand, there was hard primitivism (Kiste, 1985,
pg. 3). It was represented by people who lived in harsher climates which made them much tougher.
The Melanesian peoples represented this notion to an extent. They practiced magic, sorcery,
headhunting and cannibalism and Europeans found them very difficult to communicate with They
supposedly did not need or want all of the material goods considered necessary by Europeans, and
thus they were better off (Kiste, 1985, pg. 3). Till this present day some of the Melanesian islands such
as Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands are still viewed in the similar form. The Pacific Islands is
a group of similar people and lifestyles, however, the contrast between neighbouring islands was
recognizable. In a sense, the way Melanesians lived a hard primitivism lifestyle instilled fear and
distaste in foreigners difficult places and their less healthy environment made them less attractive

The Mortals Influence On Society

people, led by Orillia Norback had overthrown the communist government of The Mortals, and their
corrupt leader, Samil Aredon. Aredon was a cruel and sadist man, he believed in discrimination,
genocide, and torture. He was a racist and a sexist, and believed that social inequality is what drove a
society. Many speculated that he was a victim of mental illness, although no one could pinpoint what
it was. After being fed up with Arodon s practices, the rebels formed together, calling themselves, The

Fallen became a society where all races, cultures and genders were embraced. However, just like
many other societies, Fallen experienced their share of conflict, mainly with their biggest rival: The

the civil war between the people, and the communist government. Now, with a new government, a
combination of monarchy, and democracy, Fallen, became a force to be reckoned with. Conflict within
the society arose after an attempted invasion from the British Isles in 2180. Many, mainly the people
of colour were wounded severely, angering the coloured community. Many speculated that this was
the British s attempt to tear apart the society from the inside, and it worked. Fallen soon became a
place where division struck, where a line between Black and White arose. Territorial disputes,

Pros And Cons Of Currency War
The phrase Currency War was used to describe the efforts of nations to devalue their own currencies,
in order to increase their competitiveness of export in the international market. In the context of the
reading, major players in the currency war from 2010 to 2013 included the U.S., European countries,
China, Switzerland, and Japan, each using different ways in devaluing the domestic currency: the US
printed a lot of money via quantitative easing (QE) ; China controlled capital inflows through
accumulating foreign currency reserve and undervaluing renminbi; Switzerland prohibited the franc to
appreciate further against the euro; and Japan announced the unlimited purchasing of government
bonds which increases money supply to counter economic downturn. Opponents contended that policy
decisions such as QE are beggar they neighbor actions while they eased domestic economic downturn
in the developed countries alone, the price of such behavior was to be shifted to the international
market and particularly, the emerging markets. Firstly, currency wars might lead to increased forms of

components of modern life. As more research emerges correlations are made, chemicals are tested,

NextGen is a tremendous, historic shift to revamp the U.S. air transportation system. This all
embracing initiative integrates new and existing policies, procedures, and technologies, including
satellite navigation and advanced digital communications. Two major parts of this upgrade and
modernization include, but not limited to, Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System
(STARS) and En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM). These systems enable NextGen
capabilities in all phases of flight and safety. STARS for instance, replaces multiple automation
systems for controllers who provide control services to pilots in terminal airspace and the airspace
immediately surrounding major airports. Additionally, ERAM combines flight plan information with
surveillance data from Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS B), Wide Area Multi
lateration, and radar to automate many air traffic control functions. Other parts of ERAM include,
System Wide Information Management (SWIM), which provides the digital data sharing backbone of
NextGen. SWIM also connects producers and users of data with a common language and single point
of contact to access aeronautical, flight, and weather information. ADS B sends out broadcasts of an
aircraft s position, altitude, and velocity to a network of ground stations that relays the information to
air traffic control displays and nearby aircraft that are equipped to receive the data. Each component

The Thinker By Dantes Inferno
One of the most well known sculptures in the world, A French Sculptor, Auguste Rene Rodin created
The Thinker (Also known as the thinking man) and was first seen completed of the year 1904. In
France, the thinker was originally named The Poet, respectively Le Poète in French. Auguste started
creating the artwork for a doorway, named The Gates of Hell . Rodin created the piece based off of
The Inferno , a section of the Divine Comedy.
Dante Alighieri wrote his first section of the Epic to describe a soul to the journey onwards to Heaven.
It starts with Dante in Hell, as he endures suffering and punishment, while being guided by a poet
named Virgil. The Gates of Hell summarize the first third of the Divine Comedy effectively. This
doorway includes The Thinker, who seems to be looking down on Hell or Inferno.
Many infer what the meaning of the Thinker could be the Actual character Dante in the poem,
observing Hell as he does. He also could be portrayed as the Writer looking down at his poem and his
scene. Just by observing this you can tell that the pose has consideration, doubt, but overall literally
looking down on, avoiding hell, a sign of repentance of sin. This is just the backstory of the figure. In

Effects Of Advertising In Advertising
The Brain on Ads
We see advertisements every day. They are everywhere. Advertisements like to tell consumers what to
get and which is the best, saying that with this product it you will be happy and satisfied. Consumers
probably believe that they have their own preferences, but, what they believe is them choosing what to
buy and have, advertisements are subconsciously swaying them one way or another. Big advertising
companies makes people believe that one drink differs from the other or that one burger is better than
the competitor. According to The Brain: Marketing to your mind by Alice park. Alice brings up very
good claims on how advertising effects our brains; claiming that advertisements tap into our emotions
to sell and claims that these advertisements even trick many into that a brand image correlates to
satisfaction eventually creating brand loyalty just from seeing commercials. Alice Park shows us in
her article that big advertisement companies pull in many people with their appeal of the item from the
colors on the screen to the display of how the product is placed all to make their brand the best and
persuade us into buying it. Advertisements put all these effects in motion to get to the one main thing,
your perceptions. Perceptions play a large roll in these advertisements. An advertisement with
someone sipping on a coke and seems satisfied or when watching an Old Spice commercial that
someone who smells good also looks good, this all triggers something in us

The Devil And Tom Walker Analysis
Online text View summary In the story The Devil and Tom Walker by Washington Irving, a man
named Tom Walker and his wife made rash decisions based on their personal greed. Tom Walker
stumbled across the devil while taking a short cut home one day. The devil tried to make a trade with
Tom which consisted of trading Tom s soul for Captain Kidd s loot. Tom turned down the deal in spite
of his greedy wife. This frustrated her so much to the point where she went out to make a deal with the
devil herself. After going missing for several days Tom decided to go out and find his wife and most
of his possessions that she took with her. He found only her liver and heart tied up in a tree indicating
that she was dead. Tom took this opportunity to make the deal with the devil and keep all of the
treasure for himself instead of sharing with his wife. Tom agreed to become a usurer. Later he realizes
the consequence of his selfish actions and start to carry around a bible wherever he goes and increases
his attendance in church. The story comes to an end when Tom is taken by the devil on horseback and
never to be seen again. what happens to Tom after that night is up to the imagination of the reader.

Six Rules for Effective Forecasting People at cocktail parties are always asking me for stock tips, and
then they want to know how my predictions have turned out. Their requests reveal the common but
fundamentally erroneous perception that forecasters make predictions. We don t, of course: Prediction
is possible only in a world in which events are preordained and no amount of action in the present can
influence future outcomes. That world is the stuff of myth and superstition. The one we inhabit is quite
different little is certain, nothing is preordained, and what we do in the present affects how events

Nobody knows if we will ever receive a message (radio astronomers have been listening since the late
1950s), but if we did, it would send a vast and unpredictable tremor through the zeitgeist. One third of
the world s population would probably worship the remote intelligences, one third would want to
conquer them, and the final third (the readers of this magazine) would want to do some extraterrestrial
market research and sell them something. The tricky part about wild cards is that it is difficult to
acknowledge sufficiently outlandish possibilities without losing your audience. The problem and the
essence of what makes forecasting hard is that human nature is hardwired to abhor uncertainty. We are
fascinated by change, but in our effort to avoid uncertainty we either dismiss outliers entirely or
attempt to turn them into certainties that they are not. This is what happened with the Y2K problem in
the final years before January 1, 2000. Opinions clustered at the extremes, with one group dismissing
the predictions of calamity and another stocking up on survival supplies. The correct posture toward
Y2K was that it was a wild card an event with high potential impact but very low likelihood of
occurrence, thanks to years of hard work by legions of programmers fixing old code. The result of the

health continues to deteriorate they are placed in the hospital s ICU. If further decline of the

which will require invasive mechanical ventilation. Death has occurred as a result from this disease
which is why the seriousness of seeking treatment early on is momentous. Due to SARS being a
newly discovered disease in 2002 2003, treatment options, possible cures, and plans for care of this
disease were unprecedented. Oxygen therapy was normally initiated in the preliminary stages of
SARS. Non Invasive Ventilation (NIV) was reported to be found efficacious in those with respiratory

well as reduced the length of hospital stays in patients researched with SARS. Ribavirin which is a

seafood such as oysters (Nicolaou Montagnon, 2008). Next, we will discuss why vitamin C is critical
for existence. Vitamin C is crucial for survival for several reasons. For a human body to reach the
acme of its physical potential, it must have a daily intake of vitamin C. Deficiency can lead to a fatal
symptom known as scurvy. Likewise, iron absorption will be more difficult resulting in iron
deficiency anemia (Smith, Primio Humphrey Murto, 2011). However, this nutrient is essential for
bodily functions as well. Vitamin C is required for hormone production which is seen by the fact that
the highest concentration of it in the human body is in the pituitary and adrenal glands (Emsley, 2004).
Moreover, this vitamin aids in protection against free radicals and stress. Vitamin C is also imperative
because it assists in the growth of various body parts, including teeth, cartilage, and dentine. This acid
is integral for bone development and to heal fractured or broken bones. As said before, Vitamin C is
important in the absorption and metabolism of many nutrients that affect production of red blood cells
, including iron absorption (Smith, Primio, Humphrey Murto, 2011). DIRECT QUOTE WITHOUT

the alcohol for growth processes.

Subtext In Maggie, A Girl Of The Streets
In the late 1800 s thousands of immigrants fled to Ellis Island in hopes of a new life in the United
States. Among these immigrants included many irish individuals similar to that of the Johnston family,
the family that the story, Maggie, A Girl of the Streets revolves around. This story is a short novella
written by Stephen Crane and provides a glimpse into the life of immigrants and first generation
Americans, living in poverty in New York City during the Gilded Age. The author often evades
confronting the reader with the details of the plot and instead alludes to certain actions in the story. He
often allows the reader to develop their own sense of what is happening in the span of the novel s
timeline. Crane uses subtext to draw the emphasis away from Maggie and towards what a life of
poverty and isolation in the Bowery of New York can cause a person to succumb to.
On the surface level, Maggie is a story of a young women living in poverty, but when the subtext is
analyzed the story carries a much deeper meaning about isolation and hardship. Maggie begins her life
as a beautiful young lady that seems almost pure considering the conditions she arose from. The girl,
Maggie, blossomed in a mud puddle...None of the dirt of Rum Alley seemed to run in her veins (16).
Her countenance is never described however she often receives many looks from men and Pete says
he is stuck on her shape (). Nonetheless, being an attractive women did not provide for an easy life. As
she grew

herself ,but what was done to stand up for herself was punishable by the english so she was brought to
her death. There is always the person who has to be the betrayer in the film, where they are close with

The movie used several extremely interesting techniques to film certain scenes that look very
dangerous and most certainly realistic. The battle scenes also show a huge number of soldiers. Actual
soldiers from the Irish Army reserve corps were used to play both the Scottish and English soldiers. If
one were to looks closely, you can see some of the same actors attacking from both the English side
and the Scottish side. All throughout the movie there was a certain set of ominousominous music used
to portray different types of setting pertaining to the scene. An example such as when Wallace was in
the the forest hunting one was able to hear the drone music that sped up into a dramatic event when he
thought his new ally was trying to kill him, but It was really someone who he had been close

The Disadvantages Of Artifice
Emily Olenik December 1, 2017 Ms. Dolan AP Language The Disavowal of Artifice As a society we
are guided by false veneers and deceit. Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic used in hope of
gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to utilize artifice on a
daily basis to gain our recognition and approval. Even teenagers are being taught how to use artifice to
their advantage. Chris Hedges believes that the use of artifice is a necessary device to achieve success.
In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the appeal of artifice and how individuals become
unreal and ignored if they do not utilize it. His viewpoint is immensely untrue because this strategy
causes a never ending cycle of conflict. If we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become
unable to fix societal issues we face to today. The celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as
people we should look up to and let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across and
trustworthy and generous, when in reality they are just the opposite. One serious problem has surfaced
this year regarding the sexual harassment of actresses in Hollywood. Producers, directors, and other
actors have been using artifice to keep their crimes a secret from the public. One of the most
noteworthy examples is the accusations made against film executive and producer, Harvey Weinstein.
Over eighty women have stepped forward to share their stories about his

The New Testament Saul
Freedom Through Christ
According to writings in the New Testament Saul was dedicated to the persecution of the early
disciples of Jesus in and around Jerusalem. In the book of Acts, chapter nine, it is stated that Saul was
traveling on the road from Jerusalem to Damascus on a mission to bring anyone of the Christian faith
bound to Jerusalem. As he traveled the resurrected Jesus appeared to him in a great light, Saul was
struck blind. After three days Ananias of Damascus restored his sight. This transformed Saul of Tarsus
into Paul the Apostle. Paul then began to preach that Jesus of Nazareth was the Jewish Messiah and
the Son of God. Paul s experience that turned him from persecutor to apostle was a prophetic call and
a direct encounter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through Paul s letters it is clear that freedom is an important theme. Paul concludes his claim of the
freedom of Abraham s descendants with for freedom Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1). Paul uses
the idea of freedom to persuade the gentile Christians into understanding that they need not enslave
themselves to observing Torah. It was proposed to the Galatians that gentile Christians be circumcised.
Paul believed this to be an act that would undercut the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and instead
enslave us (Galatians 2:4). So in disagreement, Paul urges the gentile Christians to stand firm against
the ones who support their circumcision and that the Galatians be burdened by a yoke of slavery
(Galatians 5:1). Freedom then can become the idea that salvation does not come from being aware of
the obligations of Torah. Paul instead, preaches the gospel of salvation by grace through faith. This
becomes misinterpreted though, and leads some to believe that sin is acceptable because they are not
under law but under grace. The belief that those who have faith in Jesus may live in any fashion
without worry of being condemned as sinners and it may even improve God s reputation as gracious
and forgiving towards those who have put their faith in Jesus. Paul s response to those who
misunderstand his teachings this way is that their condemnation is deserved (Romans 3:8). Through
this, Paul

The Fall, By Albert Camus
The Fall, written by Albert Camus, is a book full of many philosophical conversations and topics to
ponder. One thing that makes it so interesting is that it is written in second person, so Clamence is
addressing the reader as a character. The basic plot of The Fall is that the reader follows Clamence
around Amsterdam as they converse about life (more specifically, his life), and in doing so the reader
learns that he has been trying to find a way to live without judgement. In the end, he decides slavery is
the best answer, because if one simply skips the court and goes straight to jail, he does not face
judgement at all. This view can already tell you that although he is an intelligent man, he has many
strange and not so useful philosophies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The painting in question is a part of a larger piece called The Ghent Altarpiece, located in St. Bavo s
Cathedral. In the very beginning of the book, when the reader and Clamence are in the bar, Clamence
points out the blank space on the wall where a painting once was. He says that he was there when the
bartender put it up, as well as when he took it down. However, in the last chapter he reveals that the
reason it was taken down was because he recognized it as the stolen painting, and upon telling the
bartender he took it down out of fear of being arrested. Clamence took it home, and it had remained in
his closet since then. This, along with the other acts of hypocrisy and pompousness, show that in this
story, Jean Baptiste is a

Weapons Of Mass Destruction In Iraq
However, in the months following this Resolution, evidence to suggest Iraq s non compliance
concerning the removal or destruction of Weapons of Mass Destruction could not be verified through
the United Nations. Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei were still investigating when the United
States declared war, however, prior to the declaration, they reported no evidence of non compliance.
Colin Powell s plea to the UN to sanction the use of armed force was not obliged, in response to this
in March 2003, the United States claimed diplomacy had failed, thus the only rational course of action
was toppling Saddam s regime. The United States had attempted to acquire a UN sanctioned invasion
but failed to do so. This begs the question; why did the United States use an argument that cited

The answer to this is, of course, change the argument. Prior to the invasion, the United States declared
the war an act of pre emption, based on shaky evidence that they were unwilling to corroborate. The
United States claimed that Saddam had Weapons of Mass Destruction, and also colluded with terrorist
organizations. Considering this, the United States felt that it was imperative that they topple the
regime in order to safeguard the country from an attack by either Saddam or by terrorists backed by

A World Order By Jhumpa Lahiri
Nair attempts to interpret and relocate the characters from their succinct semantic images on paper and
re cast them as believable entities embodying social, economic and psychological baggage in an
essentially postmodern world order. In Lahiri s novel, a world order presents itself where people like
Ashoke and Ashima are subconsciously put on the fringes of the mainstream American society, in part
by their attitude and approach to the new, almost alien societal and cultural experiences and
circumstances and in part by the reaction to their reaction by the world around them. And this is
essentially a conflicting world order where there is an intent to adapt to this bewildering newness
around while there is equally strong a yearning for the familiar and much cherished roots. The two
characters (Ashima more visibly so) are torn, as it were, between the two worlds, and struggling to
conform to either! Into this palpable melee comes the son. The second generation of Indian
immigrants and a first born American citizen of Bengali origin who is bestowed with a name
borrowed from a Russian writer of repute, Gogol Ganguly endeavours to be efficaciously functional in
a space that might be essentially regarded as an interstice or gap between the American public sphere
as Nikhil, truncated or anglicised to the convenient Nick , and the Indian home sphere as Gogol, while
trying to make peace or strike a middle path with his baffling name and social, national, cultural and
ethnic

  • 5. Reflection Paper On Figure Skating The second my feet lifted off the soap caked floor, I felt different. The skin on my neck was tingling, adrenaline was racing through my body, and my bones were engaged in a newfound excitement. My mother was wrong. The bathroom floor is a fun place to go figure skating on soap suds. My sister, Emily, and I began our skating journey at Kent State University, where we had been enrolled in Learn To Skate classes for as long as we could remember. Spinning circles faster than a horse around the kitchen table in our socks was a common occurrence. We were perpetually moving. Thus, it should not have been a surprising event when one lazy Saturday morning, Emily and I were sitting around playing dolls as we waited for our parents to wake up. For a six and nine year with the energy of a small volcano, it was as boring as sitting and watching paint dry. It is my Achilles heel to cause trouble when my mind is not stimulated, so I ventured off down the hall into the bathroom to see if there would be anything interesting to do there. My sister grabbed my hand and pulled me into a somewhat tangled, clumsy dance that was supposed to represent the figure skating we did at Kent. We couldn t have looked much better than the Cleveland Browns playing football, but for us, we felt as if we would be going to the Olympics in figure skating within the next few weeks. • 7. Similarities Between George Orwell And Animal Farm Animal Farm is a novel written by English writer George Orwell (1903 1950). The book is about animals rising and taking over a farm after years of being abused by the human owners. However, the book has many parallels The Russian Revolution, such as the Animals need to take over the farm and exile Mr Jones, how Snowball is exiled from animal farm and how Napoleon becomes just like the very thing the animals sought to exile from their farm. The overtaking of Manor Farm represents many events that took place during The Russian Revolution. Firstly, Old Majors speech about how life is miserable and how all animals are equal draws many parallels with Karl Marx s Communist Manifesto, a book about the basics of communism. Karl Marx, just like old Major was considered the Father of Communism, just like how Old Major was Considered the Father of Animalism. Furthermore, Mr Jones, the owner of the farm, is very similar the current ruler at the time, Tsar Nicholas II. Mr Jones, just like Nicholas II, was very unpopular amongst his people. He did not really want to rule and did not care for the people whom he led. Eventually, both leaders were exiled by the people. Overall, through the many similarities between the rulers of pre rebellion Russia and Manor Farm, and the parallels between Karl Marx and Old Major, it is difficult to miss the similarities between Animal Farm and Stalinist Russia. Throughout the story of Seneca s Oedipus, substantial connections could be made between Oedipus and The Prince s ideas of rule, such as methods in acquiring principalities, channeling subjects fear, the use of cruelty and controlling circumstance. Although Oedipus experiences great difficulty in attaining power, Machiavelli would have faith in his ability to maintain it, because Oedipus acquires his principality through his own arms and ability. One out of seven people in the United States live in poverty, Approximately 50 million Americans one in six people struggle with hunger, many are children. How is the U.S. poverty line determined? First established in 1965 by the social security administration, the poverty line was based on an assumption that the average family must spend about one third of its total income on food. Fortune states, There can be no healthy growth in the life of race or a nation without a self reliant spirit animating the whole body... (4). I feel like this statement is something that is important in this speech. It touches on how there is nothing healthy about not having equal rights between whites and blacks. Few blacks can trace back their ancestors as easily as it for whites, because they don t have an ancestry. This made it very hard on them because, unlike the whites, they would have had nothing to fall back on. Whites just had it a lot easier and honestly still do. The Birthmark and The Eye of the Beholder are both texts that deal with man s pursuit of perfection, and how the conception of beauty is formed in society. However, these texts use very different literary devices to make their points. While Hawthorne uses verisimilitude, paradox, and the antithesis between Aylmer s view of the hand and everyone else s view to show that trying to create beauty and perfection out of nature will only end in disaster in his book, Serling uses irony to create the round character of Janet Tyler to show that beauty and perfection are relative, and how you view yourself is more important than how society views you. Janet almost succumbed to despair and tried to kill herself, but was able to go on because she realized how she was more than just how some people saw her, she could be beautiful to herself. This contrasts with The Birthmark, where Georgiana was completely flat. She was just a passive acceptor of her fate from Aylmer. This passiveness contributed to the fact that beauty was her defining characteristic to the other characters and Hawthorne. This contrast between the two characters shows that how you view your own beauty ends up being much more important than how others view you. Serling s ending is a perfect usage of irony. We cannot see the faces of anybody until the end of the episode, where we learn that the patient is beautiful by the standards of most people, whereas the doctor and the nurses are all ugly pig looking humans. This sense of irony shows that people all have different ideals of beauty, and you can destroy a treasure if you don t appreciate that beauty. This is similar to the message of The Birthmark, because Aylmer just wanted to change what he saw as ugly, but what everyone else saw as beautiful, truly proving that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. ... The Destruction Of The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant The destruction of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in March 2011, caused by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami, resulted in massive radioactive contamination of the Japanese mainland. In November 2011, the Japanese Science Ministry reported that long lived radioactive cesium had contaminated 11,580 square miles of the land surface of Japan. Approximately 4,500 square miles an area almost the size of Connecticut was found to have radiation levels that exceeded Japan s allowable exposure rate of 1 mSV (millisievert) per year. For perspective, 1 mSV is equivalent to 100 milliRem, which is the standard unit of dose used here at the shipyard. In a normal background radiation field, an individual is exposed to .02 milliRem/hr dose. My supervisor approached me regarding the controller s concerns as the company profits are down for the past fiscal year compared to the last five years. Therefore, I have been asked to do the following: Make a simple adjustment by recalculating the depreciation from five years to ten years. Since the machine is paid, the depreciation really does not matter. Make an adjusting journal entry by transferring repairs and maintenance expenses to capital assets. Depreciation and Journal Expense Adjustments Depreciation is the process of allocating the cost of an asset to expense over its useful life. It is an annual allowance for the wear and tear, deterioration or obsolescence of the property. According to the IRS, in order for a taxpayer to be allowed a depreciation deduction for a property, the taxpayer must own the property (IRS 2015). Therefore, the supervisor s claim that the depreciation thing does not matter since the equipment is paid is inaccurate. We own the property; therefore, the recalculation can occur in the following circumstances: Wear and tear or obsolescence can indicate an inadequate or excessive equipment value, therefore the company, can change the amount of the depreciation expense. Additions and improvements occur which increase the operating efficiency or expected useful life of the asset. Since these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This story is a short novella written by Stephen Crane and provides a glimpse into the life of immigrants and first generation Americans, living in poverty in New York City during the Gilded Age. The author often evades confronting the reader with the details of the plot and instead alludes to certain actions in the story. He often allows the reader to develop their own sense of what is happening in the span of the novel s timeline. Crane uses subtext to draw the emphasis away from Maggie and towards what a life of poverty and isolation in the Bowery of New York can cause a person to succumb to. On the surface level, Maggie is a story of a young women living in poverty, but when the subtext is analyzed the story carries a much deeper meaning about isolation and hardship. Artifice is unfortunately a prominent tactic used in hope of gaining the respect of the public. Politicians and celebrities who we look up to utilize artifice on a daily basis to gain our recognition and approval. Even teenagers are being taught how to use artifice to their advantage. Chris Hedges believes that the use of artifice is a necessary device to achieve success. In his book, The Empire of Illusion, he discusses the appeal of artifice and how individuals become unreal and ignored if they do not utilize it. His viewpoint is immensely untrue because this strategy causes a never ending cycle of conflict. If we continue to feign our true appearances, we will become unable to fix societal issues we face to today. The celebrities in the media are typically portrayed as people we should look up to and let guide us. They use artifice to make themselves come across and trustworthy and generous, when in reality they are just the opposite. • 44. The New Testament Saul Freedom Through Christ According to writings in the New Testament Saul was dedicated to the persecution of the early disciples of Jesus in and around Jerusalem. In the book of Acts, chapter nine, it is stated that Saul was traveling on the road from Jerusalem to Damascus on a mission to bring anyone of the Christian faith bound to Jerusalem. As he traveled the resurrected Jesus appeared to him in a great light, Saul was struck blind. After three days Ananias of Damascus restored his sight. This transformed Saul of Tarsus into Paul the Apostle. Paul then began to preach that Jesus of Nazareth was the Jewish Messiah and the Son of God. Paul s experience that turned him from persecutor to apostle was a prophetic call and a direct encounter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through Paul s letters it is clear that freedom is an important theme. Paul concludes his claim of the freedom of Abraham s descendants with for freedom Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1). Paul uses the idea of freedom to persuade the gentile Christians into understanding that they need not enslave themselves to observing Torah. It was proposed to the Galatians that gentile Christians be circumcised. Paul believed this to be an act that would undercut the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and instead enslave us (Galatians 2:4). So in disagreement, Paul urges the gentile Christians to stand firm against the ones who support their circumcision and that the Galatians be burdened by a yoke of slavery (Galatians 5:1). Freedom then can become the idea that salvation does not come from being aware of the obligations of Torah. Paul instead, preaches the gospel of salvation by grace through faith. This becomes misinterpreted though, and leads some to believe that sin is acceptable because they are not under law but under grace. The belief that those who have faith in Jesus may live in any fashion without worry of being condemned as sinners and it may even improve God s reputation as gracious and forgiving towards those who have put their faith in Jesus. Paul s response to those who misunderstand his teachings this way is that their condemnation is deserved (Romans 3:8). Through this, Paul ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. The Fall, By Albert Camus The Fall, written by Albert Camus, is a book full of many philosophical conversations and topics to ponder. One thing that makes it so interesting is that it is written in second person, so Clamence is addressing the reader as a character. The basic plot of The Fall is that the reader follows Clamence around Amsterdam as they converse about life (more specifically, his life), and in doing so the reader learns that he has been trying to find a way to live without judgement. In the end, he decides slavery is the best answer, because if one simply skips the court and goes straight to jail, he does not face judgement at all. This view can already tell you that although he is an intelligent man, he has many strange and not so useful philosophies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The painting in question is a part of a larger piece called The Ghent Altarpiece, located in St. Bavo s Cathedral. In the very beginning of the book, when the reader and Clamence are in the bar, Clamence points out the blank space on the wall where a painting once was. He says that he was there when the bartender put it up, as well as when he took it down. However, in the last chapter he reveals that the reason it was taken down was because he recognized it as the stolen painting, and upon telling the bartender he took it down out of fear of being arrested. Clamence took it home, and it had remained in his closet since then. This, along with the other acts of hypocrisy and pompousness, show that in this story, Jean Baptiste is a ... • 47. A World Order By Jhumpa Lahiri Nair attempts to interpret and relocate the characters from their succinct semantic images on paper and re cast them as believable entities embodying social, economic and psychological baggage in an essentially postmodern world order. In Lahiri s novel, a world order presents itself where people like Ashoke and Ashima are subconsciously put on the fringes of the mainstream American society, in part by their attitude and approach to the new, almost alien societal and cultural experiences and circumstances and in part by the reaction to their reaction by the world around them. And this is essentially a conflicting world order where there is an intent to adapt to this bewildering newness around while there is equally strong a yearning for the familiar and much cherished roots. The two characters (Ashima more visibly so) are torn, as it were, between the two worlds, and struggling to conform to either! Into this palpable melee comes the son. The second generation of Indian immigrants and a first born American citizen of Bengali origin who is bestowed with a name borrowed from a Russian writer of repute, Gogol Ganguly endeavours to be efficaciously functional in a space that might be essentially regarded as an interstice or gap between the American public sphere as Nikhil, truncated or anglicised to the convenient Nick , and the Indian home sphere as Gogol, while trying to make peace or strike a middle path with his baffling name and social, national, cultural and ethnic ...
