The History of Major Earthquakes Around World Essay
The term earthquake comes from the Greek term for shaking. An earthquake is a visible rip across the
Earth s surface due to a release of energy and stored stress in the Earth s crust and causes seismic
waves. Earthquakes have been around since the time of the earliest civilizations. Earthquakes used to
be compared to the unrest of spiritual beings. Specifically, Aristotle and the Ancient Greeks stated that
earthquakes were the result of the underground winds . The earliest earthquakes were recorded by
seismometers which calculate the waves generated by each earthquake. The original seismometer was
the Wood Anderson seismometer. When an earthquake would occur a structure would dangle and
reflect light on an image. The image drawn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The plates are in constant motion. Where they interact, along their margins, important geological
processes take place, such as the formation of mountain belts, earthquakes, and volcanoes (Spall 1).
Plate tectonics are one of the most influential factors of earthquakes. When tectonic plates slide past
each other an earthquake occurs. Typical plate tectonics move at about the same rate your fingernail
grows. The process is extremely slow before the plate moves significantly enough to cause an earth
quake but it does happen. These tectonic plates are on the fault lines which are considered earthquake
hot spots.
Earthquakes typically occur in relation to other earthquakes. After shocks that follow earthquakes,
typically occur around the same fault break as the original earthquake or can occur on nearby fault
lines as well. Earthquakes can also be triggers for future earthquakes occurring on the same fault line
or neighboring fault lines anytime from seconds to years after the orginal mainshock. In recent
decades, scientists have learned that faults and earthquakes communicate with one another in far more
diverse and interesting ways than the classic foreshock mainshock aftershock (Hough 1).
A specific type of catastrophic earthquake that comes to mind is a tsunami. A tsunami is considered an
undersea earthquake. Tsunamis are caused

The Increasingly Race Nature of Advertisements During the...
Given the popularity and the exuberant price for a 30 second Super Bowl ad is priced over $4,000,000
(Stauffer, 2013), more and more companies are using racy commercials laced with sexual innuendoes.
The use of super model type females trying to sell products to the average football fan aged 18 49
(Gilmartin, 2013), using a variety of themes from Sexual assault (Covert, 2013), to the cliché that
women are crazy (Covert, 2013), to a sexual fantasy with a make out session with a Victoria s secret
model and a nerd (Taibi, 2013), to waitresses turning into strippers (Covert, 2013), the list goes on and
on; however no matter how the commercial tries to differentiate itself from the other commercials In
the same time slot, one thing Is a common denominator between all of them and that is sex. The first
question to ask yourself is, why are the Super Bowl ads such a big deal and how long has this
phenomena been in place? Since when have people tuned their T.V s in to watch this game, and how
long have people been hosting Super Bowl watch parties for? What makes this one game such an
extravaganza? A game that makes people who normally do not even care to watch the game, nor have
any rooting interest in the game, but make sure not to miss a single minute of the game. According to
Bill Dorman, (a Millersville University professor in the communications and theater department)
believes that this mass hysteria probably started because of (New York Jets quarterback) Joe Namath.

Women of the Gold Rush
Women of the Gold Rush
Imagine living in a world where women lacked the same rights as men. A place where they were not
able to get the jobs that they wanted and were often not credited for their actions. Most times if a
woman were to try to get a job or even participate in an activity, they would hide their true identities
and pretend to be men. This is what women in California had to do in the 1800 s to early 1900 s.
Many women came to California to work as prostitutes or entertainers during the 1850 s (Women).
However, there were still many women in San Francisco who were very influential and leave an
everlasting impression on the city. Women such as Lillie Hitchcock Coit, Isadora Duncan, and Mary
Ellen Pleasant were all very important people living in San Francisco during the 1800 s to 1900 s, and
were able to make a difference in their community. Being the first woman to participate in a fire
rescue and late be made the mascot for firemen was Lillie Hitchcock Coit. What made her famous
amongst the people of San Francisco was from the first time that she participated in a fire rescue with
the Knickerbocker Engine Company No.5 (Museum). It was not common for women to work,
especially in a job that required strength and manpower . She moved to California from West Point in
1851 with her parents. Ever since she was a young girl, Lillie found a fascination in fire fighting,
which is why at fifteen years old she grabbed hold of the vacant spot on the rope and helped the

Plan Do Check Act ( Pdca )
Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) Throughout history there has been development and implementations of
methodologies that will allow faster dissemination of quality control. Some methods and tools have
provided knowledge and sustainability to the system more than others. This is the case of PDCA
initially introduce by Dr. Walter Shewhart in the 1920 s and revolutionize by Dr. W. Edwards Deming
in 1950 s as a methodology to increase quality. Deming introduce Plan Do Check Act cycle as a
learning and improvement methodology (Ransom, 2008). Under this methodology Deming emphasize
on the importance of continuous improvement and visualizing the manufacturing industry as a system
that can be improve. Ever since the introduction of PDCA cycle other performance enhance
methodologies after this one have some basic relation to PDCA. PDCA is broken down in steps as
means to make it easy for practitioners to implement. First we start with P, which stands for Plan .
Under this phase objectives, questions, predictions, and plans to implement the cycle takes place
(Who?, What?, When?, and Where?) (Ransom, 2008). Second we move to Do, this phase is
specifically developed for the purpose of education, plan implementation, documentation of problems
and observations, and data analysis. At this stage the team using this cycle can change, try out, expose,
and/or cancel the plan if there is evidence that will make it unsuccessful. Next we move to the third

Merit Pay Benefits
The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows. This quote by Sydney J. Harris notes
that schooling provides opportunities and guides career paths. The effectiveness of teachers can cause
a generation of workers, parents, and students to prosper or fail. Yet, with such a burden on their
shoulders, they have one of the lowest paying professions. Teachers deserve more money than
$54,740 to $58,170 a year. Merit pay should be incorporated into all U.S. school systems. The single
salary schedule that schools use now does not reward more hardworking teachers effectively.
According to All Teachers Are Not the Same , the single salary schedule was implemented in the 1950
s to provide equality between female and male teachers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Merit pay programs aimed at groups of teachers who worked together to earn incentive
pay, as opposed to individuals competing against one another, resulted in an effect more than two
times the average (Iasevoli). Regardless of competition, teachers who work together are the ones who
get the rewards. Teachers will realize cooperation is key to getting benefits. Also, the teachers who
aren t getting rewards for their effectiveness won t have as strong as a reason as others to stay in the
profession, Thus, they would leave which weeds out the ineffective teachers. The equally important
text Merit Pay for Teachers Can Lead to Higher Test Scores for Students, a Study Finds points out,
teacher participation in a merit pay program led to the equivalent of four extra weeks of student
learning, according to a new analysis of 44 studies of incentive pay initiatives in the United States and
abroad. With merit pay in place, teachers will be more dedicated to teaching with benefits in mind,
will be able to get more and better materials, and could be less stressed which can reflect on the
students. Students would be affected positively from merit pay because the classroom environment
would be more helpful and the bad teachers would either work harder or leave. The claim that merit
pay has a negative impact on teachers and students is not always true, and in reality, merit pay may be

Afro-Cuban Racism
Comparing the race problems with those in the United States, that the government uses as a tool to
have Afro Cubans feel that their situation is not as bad as their brothers in America, effectively lessens
the feelings of racism in Cuba (131 132). Finally, Sawyer concludes that the advances made in racial
relation post Revolution has been compromised by all the conditions that I have documented
previously, and I agree wholeheartedly with his assessments (131).
Analyzing the relationship with White Cubans and Cuban Americans with Blacks after the Cuban
Revolution, Sawyer lays out some interesting facts. Outlined in Chapter Seven which talks about the

Elimination of segregation, national free health care, the breaking up of private clubs, educational
facilities, and other organizations are great improvements. Literacy, involvement in all areas of
government, acknowledgement of Afro Cuban culture, and interjecting Blacks within the national
identification of Cuba were additional positive results of the Revolution. Reaching out to Black
nationalists from America, although all of the experiences did not end up amicably, was a positive
influence on the Black Nationalist movement worldwide, with the assistance to freedom fighters in
Africa, and being an asylum for political prisoners from America. I agree with Sawyer s analysis of

Affordable Care Act
The Affordable Care Act The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is considered to be one of the most radical
health care moves in legislation after Medicare. The reason being that it will provide universal health
coverage to everyone regardless of circumstance. An evaluation of ACA s influence on health care
will be evaluated in this paper. The Cost of Health Care As the new healthcare law takes effect
insurance premiums are expected to rise. On average for the last six years insurances premiums have
gone up six percent per year. The average annual cost that employers pay to cover their employees is
around $10,000 for each employee. Usually employees are responsible for 20 percent that total or
$2000. At this time the new law has done ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Effect on Quality According to Chaffee, Mason, and Leavitt (2007) this act provides coverage for
up to 32 million of the 45 million uninsured by 2010. It prevents insurance companies from denying
coverage to those with pre existing conditions and also inhibits these companies from removing
coverage from people who develop serious illness (Open Congress, 2009). Moreover, it blocks
insurance groups from applying annual and lifetime caps on coverage (Chaffee, Mason Leavitt, 2007).
The mission of the ACA is to overhaul the inadequate health care system within the country by
providing affordable and accessible health care to everyone. Compared to other wealthy countries, the
United States ranks last in regard to the five indicators of high performing health systems access,
quality, equity, efficiency, and health status. This act has the ability to markedly improve health care.
Hence, average citizens embrace ACA because it enables them to receive coverage at an affordable
cost. Likewise, many nurses welcome ACA because it ushers in several innovative health care
programs that will enhance nursing practice and work environment (Hertel, 2011). The Affordable
Health Choices Act of 2009 allows nurses to focus on health care services as opposed to having to
battle with insurance companies regarding coverage. It allows more time to be spent in the delivery of
care, rather than focusing on the financial aspect. This bill improves

Report Of A Portion Of Sorrento Lactalis, Inc. ( Lactalis )
INTRODUCTION
This memorandum presents the findings of a review of a portion of Sorrento Lactalis, Inc. (Lactalis) s
waste stream that may potentially be sent offsite for disposal during a temporary shutdown of the
cheese production facility s whey dryer. This memo is intended to identify environmental risks
associated with the hauling and disposal of sweet whey offsite.
BACKGROUND
Lactalis operates a whey dryer to manufacture dried whey protein from the by product (i.e. sweet
whey) generated from the cheese production process. Lactalis is planning to remove the whey dryer
from service for a period of up to six (6) months to accomplish repairs to the system, and is
considering disposal options for the whey during this downtime period.
Lactalis local counsel, Givens Pursley, LLP (Givens Pursley) intends to identify regulatory and
environmental risks associated with a three (3) to six (6) month shutdown of the whey dryer. Givens
Pursley will identify the regulatory risk, determine if there is a legal liability and see if there is
capacity for the whey to be absorbed by local facilities.
Forsgren Associates (Forsgren) conducted an analysis of the sweet whey to identify environmental
risks associated with a three (3) to six (6) month shutdown of the whey facility.
SWEET WHEY WASTE STREAM ANALYSIS
Whey is a by product of the cheese making process which represents 90% of the volume and 50% of
the solids of milk used in the manufacture of cheese. It is a very dilute

Essay On Justification Of Civil War
The Justification of the Civil War It can be argued that the Civil War could have been avoided or
unavoidable. This war was American land where Americans were killing each other, undeniably was
unavoidable from my perspective. The main issues of the war was over slavery but there were other
issues that also like politics and power and economics that also played a role in the war. The Civil War
was one of the bloodiest wars killing hundreds of thousands of men. The Civil War was fought in the
United States from 1861 1865 and was fought between the Southern and Northern states after they
became divided. Session was brought about after Lincoln was coming into presidency in 1960.

In 1793 Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. The cotton gin was a device that helped separate the
seeds from the cotton with its rollers and brushes. With this invention and the rise of king cotton in the
south became the dominant engine driving slavery (video lecture: Slavery in Antebellum America).
With cotton becoming a huge source of economy in the south the slave number increased. These
slaves were labors working with agriculture not only cotton but rice, tobacco, sugar, and hemp also.
Most the slave labor was field labor and to meet the needs of labor there was the domestic slave trade.
Although slave trade was prohibited in 1808, a new huge slave trade had developed. In the southern
cities there were slave auctions, businesses selling slaves and they had advertisements for the purchase
of them. Southern newspapers carried advertisements for the slave sales, southern banks financed
slave trading, southern ships and railroads carried slaves from buyers to sellers, and southern states
and municipalities earned revenue by taxing the sale of slaves (Foner pg.

She Walks In Beauty By Lord Byron Analysis Essay
Live Life to the Fullest (An analysis of three of Byron s poems and their messages) Lord Byron, a
generation two romantic poet who left an extremely prominent mark in history. Along with his
immense talent in poetry, he was also known for his extreme interest in women. Clara Drummond, a
romantics biographer explains, Byron had many lovers, and most biographers agree that he had
relations with over 1,000 woman. Aside from his immoral activities his poetry is heavily influenced by
Nature, as are most of the romantics poets. Lord Byron explains three messages in each of his three
poems, She Walks in Beauty, To The Ocean, and Don Juan; their messages being carrying yourself in
a proper manner, familiarity at a young age, and how old age brings less excitement. In the poem She
Walks in Beauty by Lord Byron explains one very important message. The way a person carries
themselves can reveal many things about their character. I m today s society there are constantly
changing opinions, new ideas, and false hopes. Through all these different obstacles the ability to keep
the same self through them all is a very sought after quality. In the poem She Walk in Beauty Lord
Byron explains, And on that cheek, and o er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent (lines 13 14).
Byron is speaking of first impressions. When a person is seen for the first time the impression they
leave will be everlasting and will set the tone for the upcoming relationship. Another point to be made
about Byron s quote is that men are attracted to women who carry themselves gently and mysteriously.
Woman have a tendency to be strong willed and very outspoken, but Byron is suggesting that men
would rather a quiet and respectful women. To The Ocean is another poem written by Lord Byron he
explains another prominent message. Learning and becoming familiar with things at a young
contribute to the ability to try new. Fear causes many people to not try new things and ultimately leads
them to missing out on the real joys of life. Lord Byron explains this point in the poem To The Ocean
when he suggests, And trusted to thy billows far and near, And laid my hand upon thy mane as I do
here, (lines 61 62). In this excerpt Lord Byron explains his

The Case Of Gideon V. Wainwright
One of the main purposes of our judicial system is to produce fair results. This way the defendant is
not convicted for something that they did not do. Although this is supposed to be the case, our society
is set up in a way where the rich people have more of an advantage when it comes down to being
provided with a lawyer than the poor. In the case of Gideon v. Wainwright, in 1963, the Supreme
Court decided that to ensure fair trial, a counsel must be provided for the defendants that cannot afford
one. Although the Sixth Amendment only says that someone has the right to a counsel, the purpose for
a lawyer is to protect the innocent. This cannot happen if the lawyer does a poor job defending their
client. This is why the Supreme Court should set a new precedent stating that everyone is entitled to a
high quality defense. A high quality defense would look like someone who presents good arguments
that helps back up a side. They are well prepared and knowledgeable about the case. Furthermore,
they are well rounded people with good interpretation and speaking skills. Most importantly though,
they are good listeners, patient, logical, observance, and open minded about the issue. With that, they
have to be able to know how to deal with the issue and come up with alternatives.
Gideon was charged for breaking and entering. He could not afford a lawyer and as a result of that he
had requested for a lawyer. However, his request was denied by the judge because the judge stated that

Class Location
One interesting thing that I have learned so far in the class is understanding that location is an
important factor when it comes to quality of life. When looking at both of the books we have read in
class, location has been a reason why most people have a rough life. When a town is in poverty it
directly relates to the crime rate and drug use. People must find way to support their families and
selling drug is on of the ways which of course, relates to jail time as seen in Keepin On. Another
problem seen when living in poverty due to location is the school systems and quality of teachers is
affect. Teacher in public school are not up to par due to the lack of funding the town provide to have
quality teachers. Finally, when a town is in poverty, the job outlook decreases. Many find that the
requirements are out of reach and jobs that they are qualified for are too far of a commute. ... Show

Sigmund Freud s Theories about Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious Mind
Sigmund Freud was well known for his theories on psychoanalysis, and it was used to help understand
the unconscious mind better. In Freud s lifetime, he grew to be a very influential person of the
twentieth century. The western society still uses words that he introduced in his time, some are libido,
repression, denial, and neurotic. He was the founding father of the theory of psychoanalysis, which
explains human behavior. He also believed that if we clarify our demeanor to ourselves or others, we
do not give an honest version of our motivation (www.simplypsychology.org, 2015).
On May 6th, 1856, Freud was born and soon came to be an Austrian neurologist. Freud was popular
for his different view of the human mind and his practices are well known to this day. When he was
just a child of 4, his family moved to Vienna, Austria and he practiced there for most of his life. In,
1881 Freud got his medical degree then soon started his own private practice. Josef Breuer was a
colleague of Freud at the beginning of his career. Breuer inspired Freud, which lead him to believe
that when a patient has had a traumatic experience in their past, it was latent within their conscious. To
help with the traumatic experience, Freud advised them to remember those experiences and accept
them (www.biography.com, 2015). Freud showed some of these examples in his

gets closer to the city. It begins to wreak havoc among the citizens, destroying everything and
anything that it comes into contact. From this moment on, the moviegoers know that this monster,
Godzilla, is a force to be reckoned with. Decades later, Godzilla still seems to be a popular monster
figure that constantly is reimagined in many different forms battling other monstrous characters: King
Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), Mothra vs Godzilla (1964), Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994). As of today,

the qualities that make Godzilla the monster we know and love has not changed from the original

Cosmic Trinity
Good Morning all, welcome to this Beyond Belief presentation of Trinity artwork. I am Eloise Daly
and my watercolour painting is titled A Cosmic Trinity . I chose this art form to express my concept of
the Trinity because it flows easily, like how each reflection of God can relate to the essence of God.
This artwork is representational; it was chosen because the trinity can be clearly represented. In this
piece, the Earth is the centre of the artwork to signify how God watches over us. The Father as the
creator of life, the Son as the flesh of God, and the Holy Spirit as the love and spirit of God. The
Trinity is enclosed by an illuminated triangle in a boundless expanse of space to represent the faceless

Ejaculatory ducts These are formed by the fusion of the vas deferens and the seminal vesicles. The
ejaculatory ducts empty into the urethra.
Urethra The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder to outside of the body. In males, it
has the additional function of expelling (ejaculating) semen when the man reaches orgasm. When the
penis is erect during sex, the flow of urine is blocked from the urethra, allowing only semen to be
ejaculated at orgasm.
Seminal vesicles The seminal vesicles are sac like pouches that attach to the vas deferens near the base
of the bladder. The seminal vesicles produce a sugar rich fluid (fructose) that provides sperm with a
source of energy and helps with the sperms motility (ability to move). The fluid of the seminal

Ethical Issues In Freedom From Hunger And Thirst
Ethical Issues
Aside from the possible advantages, disadvantages and alternatives to the procedure, an owner, as well
as a veterinarian, must consider the ethical risks surrounding an invasive cosmetic surgery such as
debarking. The five freedoms are crucial in considering the welfare of an animal, and after exploring
the advantages and disadvantages to debarking, there can be a violation of some sort in every one of
these freedoms (11). The first freedom, Freedom from Hunger and Thirst, has a possibility of being
violated, as complications to the procedure can result in scarring of the larynx, ultimately obstructing
the ability for an animal to swallow their food/water. Freedom from Discomfort is definitely violated,
as not only is the dog ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Freedom from Pain, Injury and Disease ties into these first two freedoms, because as mentioned
above, the animal is going to be in pain from an invasive procedure, followed by an increased risk of
infection and disease due to the nature of the area being performed on. Animals have a tendency to
lick and/or eat anything that they deem as delicious or interesting, whether it is out of boredom,
hunger, or curiosity. Having any extra opportunities for bacteria or viruses from feces, other dogs, etc.
to enter the wound is increasing the risk of the animal succumbing to a disease, infection or virus that
they may not have contracted otherwise. The Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour is one of the
welfare concerns most obvious in the case of debarking, as the animal is no longer able to perform the
type of communication they use most frequently. While they are able to bark , they are not effectively
communicating in the way they intend to. This leads to the violation of the Freedom from Fear and
Distress, as not being able to communicate with their owner can lead to fear, distress and aggression in
pets (2). This freedom can be a difficult welfare concern to address, because if the surgery is not
performed and a pet is relinquished, this may also cause fear and distress if they are well accustomed

The City Is The Nuclear Power Plant
The day began like any other. A city full of life woke up to continue its normal routine. Early morning
sunlight glinted off of surroundings along the horizon. Shiny cars crawled through the streets.
Pedestrians exited their homes and walked along the sidewalks. Bright, luscious green trees and
colorful gardens lined the streets. Children crossed the roads to get to their favorite playgrounds.
Teenagers headed to the beaches that bordered a lake in the center of town. Massive concrete flats,
serving as apartment buildings, created grids throughout the city. As usual, workers constructed new
buildings for an ever growing community. A giant Ferris wheel, one of the city s most iconic
landmarks, towered over the fairgrounds in the distance. Statues stood in the many public squares that
occupied space between buildings. One of the most noticeable features of the city is the nuclear power
plant, centrally located near the middle of the metropolis. The town of Pripyat, Ukraine, home to
almost fifty thousand people, was developing into a model city. Little did the citizens know that their
lives were about to change. In the case of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident in 1986, the calamity
came as a complete and utter shock to the people involved. Far too often, this is also the case for
individuals involved in other disasters. Lives are built for the purpose of moving forward, and one
unfortunate mishap can send them spiraling in the opposite direction. Problematic factors that

Similarities Between Ambush And Sniper
Contents of a Dead Man s Pocket , Ambush , and Sniper are three short stories that all seem to be
different but also have similarities. Each story describes a short period of time in the main characters
live that make a significant impact on them. Taking a close look at the literary elements of setting,
theme, conflict, and characters show the similarities and differences between the three stories.
The three short stories, Contents of a Dead Man s Pocket , Ambush , and Sniper all have different
settings but also similar settings at the same time. The only similarities of the setting between all three
stories are there at night and Ambush and Sniper are in war zones. Contents of a Dead Man s Pocket
main setting is on a ledge 11 stories up. He stood on the ledge outside in the slight, chill breeze, eleven
stories above the street. Ambush setting is shortly after midnight...dense brush along the trail...the
night was foggy and hot. The setting is hot and foggy unlike Contents of a Dead Man s Pocket which
is cool and a clear night. Then Sniper is on a rooftop compared to Ambush where the setting is in the
dense brush. The Sniper setting is night...dim light of the moon...on a rooftop near O Connell Bridge.

Ida B. Wells 2 Essay
The Success of Ida B. Wells #8220;One had better die fighting against injustice than die like a dog or
a rat in a trap. #8221; Ida B. Wells Ida B. Wells was an important figure in Black American History.
She was born a slave in Mississippi in 1862. Wells was able to gain an education and, later, became a
journalist for various Negro papers. Through her writing, she was able to attack issues dealing with
discrimination against African American people. Ida B. Wells became an international activist for
African American rights when she informed the English people about lynching in America. She

Black men respected and honored her work in the advancement of African Americans, instead of
envying a woman for accomplishing these essential tasks before a male exhibited her achievements.
Black men, unlike Whites of the time, were able to see past Wells #8217; sex and support the work
that she accomplished for all African Americans. Another aspect of this time period which proved to
be advantageous for Wells was the fact that she was female. White America was not nearly as
threatened by Black females as the prejudiced fear Whites experienced of Black men. Whites
perceived Black men to be carnal, exceedingly virile 3 and dangerous to the White society. More
successful Black men were lynched than successful Black women. Black women were not seen as a
direct threat of the power roles in society, therefore Wells was able to take many more risks than any
African American male in her efforts to end the lynchings and discrimination of Blacks. White males
also devalued Ida B. Wells #8217; work, because she was female. White men found it difficult to
believe that a woman could accomplish very much, because of the way they perceived women to be
inferior beings. These prejudiced thoughts actually helped Wells by giving her more space for progress
in her fight to end discrimination of African Americans.

Criticism by Imprisonment
Francis Scott Fitzgerald and Edith Wharton authored novels that take place in America around the
beginning of the nineteenth century. In both This Side of Paradise and The House of Mirth, the authors
paint the protagonists as imprisoned. This is a criticism of the society that they live in and is
represented in the authors use of imagery, characterization, and the motif of social standing. Wharton
uses a great deal of imagery to reflect Lily Bart as imprisoned, while Fitzgerald uses less imagery to
describe Amory s predicament but still has his character as a prisoner. In The House of Mirth, Lily is
depicted by Selden as wearing bracelets that act as chains: [Lily] was so evidently the victim of the

(Fitzgerald 147 148).
With Amory s loss of love for Eleanor, Fitzgerald couples the loss with the idea of a mirror. Within
this idea, Fitzgerald expresses that Amory only loves that which reflects himself, and through that
reflection he is able to find who he is at the moment. However, with the broken perfection of Eleanor
comes the broken mirror and the losing of himself. Fitzgerald creates Amory s personality to only
know himself when he is with other people; in essence he is Fitzgerald s description of a personality.
This interpretation continues with Fitzgerald s foreshadowing that Amory will find himself with
another woman in the last line. Fitzgerald s criticism lies in the knowledge that people go about life
only looking to find themselves in others instead of introspection. Through characterization, both of
the authors offer their criticism, one for society and the other for individuals. In both novels, the
authors depict the motif of the importance of social standing. With Wharton, this exists in Rosedale s
marriage denial: I m more in love with you [Lily] than ever, but if I married you now I d queer myself
for good and all, and everything I ve worked for all these years would be wasted (Wharton 245 246).
From this rejection, Wharton expresses the belief that love means nothing

How Does Eliot s Use Of Allusion In The Love Song Of J...
I explicitly agree that the poetry of T.S Eliot is unquestionably dominated by thought provoking
reflections which are complemented by powerful imagery, leading the reader into the state of mind of
Eliot himself. Initially, I abhorred Eliot s poetry. His poetry then, for me, represented a confusing and
exceptionally difficult body of work and I found it similarly difficult to form any kind of genuine
response to his poetry. In spite of this, over my past couple of readings, I have formed a muscular
response to his literary work. Personally, I comprehend the poetry of T.S Eliot as being enigmatic and
remarkable which I believe is shown through the power of Literary History. Eliot s compelling use of
literary allusions is incredibly conspicuous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
T.S. Eliot s use of allusion is fundamental to the structure and themes of his early poetry. In the poem
The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock , Eliot uses gripping literary allusions and thought provoking
reflections, specifically influenced by Eliot s extensive reading of Dante, the poem s epigraph being an
extract from the Inferno, a work that describes a journey through Hell. This poem also makes several
references to the Bible with Prufrock comparing himself to John the Baptist and Lazarus, suggesting
that he, too, has something acute to reveal to the world, although admitting he is no prophet neither a
John the Baptist, nor a Lazarus, nor is he even a hero. One can postulate that it is probable that
Prufrock may not be a poem about good people, but about bad ones professing to be good. The Love
Song of J. Alfred Prufrock resembles a form of a dramatic monologue, the words of an individual
speaker, who is revealing their inner thoughts and concerns to the audience. Accordingly, Eliot makes
use of a number of metaphors to convey Prufrock s lack of confidence and self disgust, with Prufrock
correlating his days and ways to cigarette butts to convey his

the unconscious was the hidden part beneath the water. Freud theories have three levels of awareness:
the conscious, the preconscious, and the unconscious. Freud also divided the personality structure into

Siege Of Jerusalem Research Paper
The Siege of Jerusalem Fall of Judea
Jewish history and cultural memory revolves around a few pivotal moments. One of the most
important is the 587 BCE Siege of Jerusalem, a moment that changed Jewish history forever.
The Kingdom of Judah
In 1948, the nation of Israel was created as a homeland for the Jews, a population without a place to
call their own. Right off the bat, this raises some questions. Why didn t the Jews have a home? And
why would they want Israel? The answer to these questions takes us back literally thousands of years
to an ancient kingdom named Judah. Judah, located in roughly what is now Israel, was home to a
certain Semitic speaking ethnic group. Any guesses which one? Judah...Jews...see how that works?

exile also resulted in the loss of the Jewish holy relics; after the Siege of Jerusalem, the Ark of the

The Hebrew people would not be allowed back into Jerusalem until the end of the century when the
Persian Achaemenid Empire conquered the region and permitted them to leave Babylon. From that
point, the Hebrews of Jerusalem existed as subjects of various empires, from the Persians to the
Greeks to the Romans. Throughout this time, they maintained the dream of becoming an independent
kingdom again, inspired by their memory of the Kingdom of Judah. The Temple of Solomon was
rebuilt, but the Jews were again banished from Jerusalem after the Romans laid siege to the city in 70
CE. The Jews would be without a homeland for nearly 2,000 years, united in the dream and promise
of a renewed Jewish state.

Reflective Essay on Writing Techniques I Have Learned
Over the past few months, I have learned several different writing techniques. While all of the
different types of papers were difficult to write, I believe that my writing skills have improved. In fact,
I did not understand all of the assignments, but I did try to do my best on all of them. While I should
have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs, I feel that I learned a great
deal. It is true that I have not had very much writing experience and the writing process is difficult for
me. Sometimes, I do admit, it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I am

something such: as Balko points out that, he is upset with insurance companies (Balko). This example

I thought about the quote afterwards. When doing this in an essay, the teacher has no way of knowing
what the student is trying to convey. A proper quote should start with an introduction. After the
introduction, you have to say what the person has said, followed by what you think about what they
said. After doing this, a student should cite the author by using parentheses. I did not know that a
writer was supposed to do this. My first paper was very inadequate.
Additionally, I also cited sources and then forgot where I got the information. However, the use of
citing information and research was also one of my debilitating points. Nevertheless, I believe after
the reminders, corrections, and proofreading that needed pointing out to me, helped me improve in

The Crucial Role of Teiresias in Sophocles Antigone
Antigone is a tragic play written by Sophocles in ancient Greece during approximately 441 B.C. The
story is set in a palace in Thebes, a city within Greece. Teiresias is an old blind prophet who claims to
be capable of seeing the future, he has yet to tell a prophesy to be untrue; he has immense credibility.
A theme within the text is: quality not quantity. In this translation of Antigone, Teiresias has exactly 76

Essay On Gemstones
The Properties and Types Of Gemstones
Before we get further into this topic of properties and types let s make the basics clear. What exactly is
a Gemstone? Well, The answer is pretty simple a gemstone is mineral or organic substance that is cut
and polished and used as ornaments. Gemstones are also used as a part of many supersticious beliefs
eg. Birthstones, good luck charms etc. Now that we know what gemstones mean we will now see how
to identify the various properties of gemstones.
Properties of a Gemstone
A gemstone is purely classified under two properties they are 1) Optical Properties and
2) Physical properties.

It is basically the inner structure of the gemstone and this property again deals with hardness, it can
determine how hard a gemstone is based on the crystal system it also helps to determine the durability
of the gemstones. The crystal systems are cubic, tetragonal, hexagonal, trigonal, monoclinic, triclinic,
orthorhombic.
8) Fracture
Although cleavage and fracture both deals with weakness in planes. Cleavage is only found in certain
gemstones whereas fracture is found in every gemstone and any direction apart from cleavage that
occurs only in one direction. A fracture is a break in the emstone not along the cleavage plane. There
are different types of fractures namely even uneven concoidal etc. ,ost common in gemstone being
concoidal mostly seen in corundum.
Now that we are also finished talking about the physical properties. Lets move on to the types of
gemstones.
There are basically two types of classification
1) Precious and semi precious gemstones
The precious gemstones are diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, topaz, garnet, opal, amethyst,
chrysoberyl, moonstone, turquoise, jade, amber and finally the most important one is pearl.

gaming. They came up with the video game Pokémon . Although I am a girl, I consider myself a
gamer at heart. This game is something that is very dear to me because this game established a strong

wondered if I could relate my hobby of gaming to math. Although math is a struggle for me, I have
decided to step out of my comfort and explore the first game I played in my life and investigate the
use of math in the capture rate of the pokemons. This was a simple 2 D, 64 bit game that involved the
players moving a character in a fictional world, capturing balls and going on adventures. Players
would have to solve difficult puzzles and train their own Pokémon in order to progress through the
game. They do this by meeting progressively stronger computer controlled trainers along the way and
battling with their Pokémon. The player s Pokémon gain experience through defeating the opponent.
The players can also capture new ones as well. Generally, as the player progresses, stronger Pokémon
appear, and the players have a chance to capture them. They do this by throwing a tennis sized ball
that will transport the entire Pokémon into the ball that they threw with.

The Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 (often shortened to SOX) is legislation passed by the U.S. Congress
to protect shareholders and the general public from accounting errors and fraudulent practices in the

Investigating The Intrinsic Differences Among The...
Abstract
The following research paper tests and investigates the intrinsic differences among the two tasks
present in the generation task and the affects it has on memory. We believe that the relation of
generating a word compared to simply reading a word has a more lasting effect on the brain and its
memory sensors. This experiment consisted of generated words or read words followed by a rule
(associate, category, opposite, rhyme, synonym) in which the participant was given the first word and
asked to read or generate the following word following the rule type. After a certain period of time the
participants, which consisted of students currently enrolled at Texas A M, were asked to recall the
words they generated or read. Results indicated that that when a word is generated it is recalled at a
more accurate rate.
This essay is geared to establish and report findings based on the phenomenon manifested among a
vast amount of experiments over the years, the generation effect. While there were many informative
articles which slightly applied to the generation effect no true conclusion is reached, therefore this
essay attempts to compile all ideas to come to one solid finding.
The generation effect was developed as a part of memory research, and it states that individuals tend
to recall words that they personally generated better than words participants were given. Since this
phenomenon has been an important part in many studies yet seemed to have no true solid

An Errand of Beauty
Dearest Marcellina Avitus,
I m afraid I must be again the bearer of bad news my dear sister. After bringing yours and Lucanus

them answered. I thought perhaps, with my noble blood and the respected Patrician name of my

neighborhoods like a plague from the gods, following whispers from strolling senators in their bright

However, as you know dear sister, I am easily distracted by the wondrous beauties the gods have
bestowed upon our great city. Sister, have you ever actually taken the time to look at the beauty
around you? I know there is not much where you reside on the outskirts of town, but next time you go
to the market, please do. In fact, visit the markets outside of Emperor Trajan s forum the next time you
come further into the city.
Can you imagine two whole levels of market stalls? Each one with more and more goods to purchase,
by the gods it is a sight to behold sister. I had to send one of ladies in waiting to run home and fetch

University Preparation According to Akers and Yahr (2005, p. 1), communication and interviewing
skills are important for entry level accountants. Accountants must gather data, interview employees of
the client s organization, and interact with members of the audit team. Universities, for the most part,

Fraud and Forensic Accounting and Advanced Fraud and Forensic Accounting course catalog
descriptions include introductions into interviewing as part of the topics covered during the courses
(Colorado Mesa University, 2017). Likewise, MSUD provides students with greater exposure to
interviewing in their courses. MSUD s Fraud Awareness (ACCM 5600) course offers an overview of
interviewing, including a guest lecturer with hands on interviewing experience to discuss the topic.
Additionally, in Sheri Betzer s Legal Elements of Fraud (ACCM 5650) course at MSUD, not only is
class time dedicated to the introduction of interviewing, but the course has a practical exercise for the
students. The practical exercise includes conducting four separate interviews of individuals related to
an accounting litigation scenario. Over the course of those interviews, not all the individuals contacted
are overly cooperative with the student interviewer. This gives the student a much more realistic view
of what may happen when he seeks information from the

Queer Studies Montegary
I. Introduction
While my choosing Prof. Montegary s Introduction to Queer Studies fulfills the course s requirement
to be present in a higher numbered class than the previous observation, it also offered me the
opportunity to study a professor I had previously spoken to on numerous occasions regarding the PhD
program, various disciplines and the overall business of academics . As such, I looked forward to the
opportunity to now observe her pedagogical praxis in practice (per se) and style.
As a class, the Introduction to Queer Studies (WST111) is meant to provide...a basic overview of
queer studies and introduce...major texts, theories, and thinkers within this interdisciplinary
field...focus(ing) specifically on the development of queer studies within the US academy and on how
queer theory has transformed the study of sexuality within the United States (syllabus). The particular
module I would be observing on Wednesday, March 10th Feminist Theories of Race, Class, and
Sexuality included readings from the Combahee River Collective, Barbara Smith, Cherríe Moraga and
Gloria Anzaldúa, Barbara Cameron, Merle Woo, and Audre Lorde. The sheer number of readings ...

The first half of the class was spent discussing the social context in which the readings emerged from.
Prof. Montegary teaches with (as opposed to from) a combination of notes and Powerpoint. She
framed the reading in broader contexts, making connections between the theories, their feminist
authors and social conditions at the time. Each essay is introduced through a representative quote,
some biographical notes about its author(s) , followed up by questions meant to generate further
discussion. There seems to be a standard group of about five to eight students who readily answer
questions, and while she will pick them, Prof. Montegary also chooses students at random (joking to
one reluctant student, Yep, you

Interracial Dating
the United States there is an increased in racial and cultural diversity. Despite the increased, limited
research exists that explores the role communication plays in the initiation of interracial relationships
among dating, co habiting, marrying, or interracial friendships and understanding the factors that
influences communication behaviors. I would like a chance to explore the cultural differences between
relationship partners in the area of intercultural communication in interpersonal relationships such as
intercultural marriages, dating, family and friendship. Interracial relationship is referred as people
involving, or co existing between different races or ethnic groups. It is important to do a study on
interpersonal communication among interracial dating or to determine the influence of interracial
relationships on the grounds that by large, it is found in intercultural relationship or marriages are
perceived negatively across cultural and ethnic groups through the eyes of prejudice and stereotyped

Identity In Sir Gawain And The Green Knight
King Arthur and his knights are having the holiday feasts around the table in the hall. Suddenly, an
unknown green knight enters to their hall on the horseback. He humiliates Arthur and his knights and
therefore Arthur invites him to have a fight, but he refuses. However, he challenges someone to strike
him with his own axe instead. Gawain, the niece of Arthur, feels offended and stands up to take the
challenge. He then chops the green knight s head. However, the green knight does not fall down from
his horse, but goes down and picks up his head. After that, he left and everyone enjoys the feast again.
The next day, Sir Gawain accepts his quest sadly to look for the Green Chapel. Although he meets a
multitude of enemies on his way, he always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After a long harsh trip, he sees a castle and meets the Lord of it. The Lord and people welcome him
warmly and feed him with good dishes. Then, the Lord introduces two women to him who are the
Lord s wife and an old lady. Few days later, both of them go hunting together and the Lord finally
reveals his true identity to Gawain that he is actually the Green Knight. Gawain is mad that he lies to
him all the time and challenges him to a fight. Green Knight refuses to fight with him again because
he thinks Gawain is weak. Gawain is even angrier and tries to get him into a fight and therefore he lies
to the Green Knight that his wife sleeps with him. The Green Knight is furious after he heard that. He
raises his axe and swings to Gawain but he defends it with his strong armor. They fight for days and
still none of them is defeated. Then, the Green Knight s wife appears and tries to stop the fight.
However, the Green Knight does not see his wife is coming and accidentally kills her. Finally, the
fight stops and Gawain is terrified seeing that as well. The Green Knight screams angrily and blames

Mt. Everest May Of 1996
In the wake of the 1996 disasters, a doctor decided to perform an experiment that required him to
follow a team of hikers to measure for the first time, the toll high altitude climbing takes on the heart,
lungs, blood, and brain. I thought it appropriate to incorporate some of the evidence acquired from the
studies done by the group, seeing as the interest for this experiment was triggered by the tragic events
that had materialized on Mount Everest May of 1996. The program is a first scientific study I have
seen on what occurs in human body when it is steadily experiencing this type of stress. The program
shows what happens to the awareness and physical ability in low oxygen pressure. While superficially
seeming to be normal, under intense testing done by the researchers, it is clear that there stands
weakening in the hiker s brain capacity to process information. ... Show more content on

Since this program I now have renewed admiration for the mountaineers, especially for Edmund
Hillary, and Tenzing Norgay who was the first to climb Mt. Everest. When they climbed they did not
have the lightweight equipment, or ropes to help them make their climb helpful. They did not even
have the established safety route to the summit like there is today. It was fascinating to watch this
show, to see how people react to altitude, to watch what is actually happening to them physiologically.
It was like having a first hand experience without the danger of actually

Examples Of Allegory In The Chronicles Of Narnia
Allegorical Views from the Chronicles of Narnia
When writing The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis argued that he was not writing an allegory but a
supposal instead. Lewis claims that he tried to hypothesize what it would be like for Jesus to live in
another world. In the Chronicles of Narnia, I believe that C.S. Lewis wrote an allegory. By definition
an allegory typically reveals a hidden meaning behind something, which in this case would be the
message behind the characters and their actions within Narnia. This can be supported throughout the
series in which Lewis makes small but noticeable innuendos to religious beliefs. One book that can be
compared to this series to support the claim that Lewis wrote an allegory would be the Bible. The
second book, which could support this claim of allegorical writing, would be Lord of the Flies, by
William Golding. Lewis also shares some similar viewpoints with Augustine. In Myth became Fact,
by C.S. Lewis we are given another view point as to why he believes people think he writes in
allegories rather than supposals.
The characters from the Chronicles of Narnia can be related to those found in ... Show more content

In the Bible, the book of Genesis, Augustine believes that the snake was the one to corrupted Adam
and Eve, not just because they were human. Lewis has a similar take on this in the series. The children
in his stories he believes to be innocent and good, it is not their fault for falling into evil tendencies. In
the Narnia series, it is the White Witch s fault that the children or characters fall for evil. Both
Augustine and Lewis believe that no one is above being saved. Everyone has the opportunity to repent
and be saved by God. Lewis shows this with Edmund throughout the series where Edmund starts out
by not believing in Narnia and betraying his siblings trust, to sharing this experience with others and
aids them in turning back to the

Significance Of Tattoos
Origin of tattoos
Many people all over the world have been marking their bodies for thousands of years. The word
tattoo may have two meanings; a verb or a noun, whereby as a verb it means the act of marking the
skin with indelible ink whereas tattoo as a noun refers to the picture or a pattern made. A person who
puts tattoos is called a tattoo artist, tattooist or a tattoer and the shop where he operates is called tattoo
parlor/shop.
The word tattoo is said to be a loanword from Polynesians (Tahitians) which had various spellings
such as tatu, tattow, ta tu, tatao which means to mark something. It is believed that this word was
brought to England during Captain Cook s voyages from Tahiti where he got introduced to tattoos.
Egyptians are the earliest known people known to put tattoos on their bodies. This dates back to 2000
B.C. where female ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example; tattoos were used by women in Bomeo for purposes of getting a suitor. These women
would put marks on their forearms showing the skill they were good at and thus attracting men who
would later marry them.
In Greece, tattoos were used as a form of communication; by use of tattoos spies were easily
identified. While in Rome, people who became criminals would be marked or tattooed so that they
could be easily picked from the rest of the people and the same would be done to slaves. In Western
Asia, mainly among the people of Ainu; the use of tattoos was a way of showing ones status in the
society for example girls and married women would easily be distinguished.
The Japanese also embraced use of tattoos especially on criminals where there was a certain mark for
the first offense which was a line on the criminal s forehead. They would then put an arch for second
offense and another line for the third one which was the last one. It was a visible mark of punishment
which would be seen by

Amy Winehouse Sociology
Every individual during some point in their life has experienced a bad day or perhaps a rough patch.
The feeling of an overwhelming sensation of hopelessness can be without a doubt exhausting. For
several individuals, the aid from family and loved ones is necessary when trying to recover. However,
for Amy Winehouse, it seems as if every inner struggle the star had brewing inside was swept under
the rug by her mother and father. It is evident that ignoring mental health issues will never have a
positive end result and that is demonstrated in Amy. In order for the audience to step in her shoes for a
few hours, Amy is re presented to the audience by fragments of footage of herself and interviews of
her closest friends and loved ones. With that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, it is her father that states there is no need for Amy to attend rehab, therefore, she does not.
There are countless other scenes presented in the documentary that demonstrate the disconnect
between Amy and her parents such as her father showing up with a camera crew during a time that
was intended for Amy to overcome her mental health issues and her addiction to drugs (A Most
Modern Tragedy: Why We re All To Blame For The Death Of Amy Winehouse). In an interview with
the director of the Film Amy it is evident that the relationships she had in general were peculiar. For
example, it was stated she had lots of different compartments that she had everyone in. And in each
compartment everyone felt they were her best friend (Interview With Asif Kapadai, Director of 2015
Amy Winehouse Documentary Amy ). However, despite the strange relationships Amy had with her
family and loved ones, they did share one thing in common, they all wanted what they thought was
best for her. This proved to be an enormous dilemma and maybe a justification for her inability to
recover from her addiction to drugs and underlying mental health

Elliot Editing Techniques
Through this clip, many editing techniques work to further the story by deepening the emotional
effects and narative meaning of what is happening on screen. Four especially impactful effects are the
graphic, rhythmic, spatial and temporal aspects of editing. Graphic editing at the beginning and end of
this clip work to demonstrate Elliot s feelings towards ET before and after they meet for the first time.
The first 15 seconds of the clip consist of a single head on shot of Elliot as he peers into the cornfield.
Tall corn stalks obstruct the camera s view of Elliot allowing only slices of his face to show. The beam
from his flashlight peaks throughout the corn in select places sometimes blinding the lense in a way
that makes the rest of the scene unseeable. The face that we cannot clearly see Elliot s face but rather
his outline is similar to the way the mysterious men are shown at the ... Show more content on

These faceless men represent the unknown and curiosity that surrounds ET. The similarities to those
men and Elliot in this scene hilight Elliot s feelings towards ET at the beginning of the clip as those of
curiosity rather than fear. Additionally, the movement of the shadows across Elliot s face and the
solidarity of the focal point in this shot create an eerie and suspenseful emotional effect. The graphics
at the end of the clip indicate what Elliot plans to do next in reference to ET. The camera shows Elliot
as he gazes longingly towards the something in front of him. The next shot, positioned towards the
staircase leading up and out of Elliot s backyard, uses the eyeline match tactic to show what Elliot is
gazing at. A red light at the top of the hill demands the attention in the shot. Similar to the green light
in The Great Gatsby, this red light shows Elliot s desire. The red light highlighting his face from above
surrounds the shot in hopeful and inspired emotions. The way the final

  • 2. The History of Major Earthquakes Around World Essay The term earthquake comes from the Greek term for shaking. An earthquake is a visible rip across the Earth s surface due to a release of energy and stored stress in the Earth s crust and causes seismic waves. Earthquakes have been around since the time of the earliest civilizations. Earthquakes used to be compared to the unrest of spiritual beings. Specifically, Aristotle and the Ancient Greeks stated that earthquakes were the result of the underground winds . The earliest earthquakes were recorded by seismometers which calculate the waves generated by each earthquake. The original seismometer was the Wood Anderson seismometer. When an earthquake would occur a structure would dangle and reflect light on an image. The image drawn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The plates are in constant motion. Where they interact, along their margins, important geological processes take place, such as the formation of mountain belts, earthquakes, and volcanoes (Spall 1). Plate tectonics are one of the most influential factors of earthquakes. When tectonic plates slide past each other an earthquake occurs. Typical plate tectonics move at about the same rate your fingernail grows. The process is extremely slow before the plate moves significantly enough to cause an earth quake but it does happen. These tectonic plates are on the fault lines which are considered earthquake hot spots. Earthquakes typically occur in relation to other earthquakes. After shocks that follow earthquakes, typically occur around the same fault break as the original earthquake or can occur on nearby fault lines as well. Earthquakes can also be triggers for future earthquakes occurring on the same fault line or neighboring fault lines anytime from seconds to years after the orginal mainshock. In recent decades, scientists have learned that faults and earthquakes communicate with one another in far more diverse and interesting ways than the classic foreshock mainshock aftershock (Hough 1). A specific type of catastrophic earthquake that comes to mind is a tsunami. A tsunami is considered an undersea earthquake. Tsunamis are caused ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Increasingly Race Nature of Advertisements During the... Given the popularity and the exuberant price for a 30 second Super Bowl ad is priced over $4,000,000 (Stauffer, 2013), more and more companies are using racy commercials laced with sexual innuendoes. The use of super model type females trying to sell products to the average football fan aged 18 49 (Gilmartin, 2013), using a variety of themes from Sexual assault (Covert, 2013), to the cliché that women are crazy (Covert, 2013), to a sexual fantasy with a make out session with a Victoria s secret model and a nerd (Taibi, 2013), to waitresses turning into strippers (Covert, 2013), the list goes on and on; however no matter how the commercial tries to differentiate itself from the other commercials In the same time slot, one thing Is a common denominator between all of them and that is sex. The first question to ask yourself is, why are the Super Bowl ads such a big deal and how long has this phenomena been in place? Since when have people tuned their T.V s in to watch this game, and how long have people been hosting Super Bowl watch parties for? What makes this one game such an extravaganza? A game that makes people who normally do not even care to watch the game, nor have any rooting interest in the game, but make sure not to miss a single minute of the game. According to Bill Dorman, (a Millersville University professor in the communications and theater department) believes that this mass hysteria probably started because of (New York Jets quarterback) Joe Namath. • 4. Women of the Gold Rush Women of the Gold Rush Imagine living in a world where women lacked the same rights as men. A place where they were not able to get the jobs that they wanted and were often not credited for their actions. Most times if a woman were to try to get a job or even participate in an activity, they would hide their true identities and pretend to be men. This is what women in California had to do in the 1800 s to early 1900 s. Many women came to California to work as prostitutes or entertainers during the 1850 s (Women). However, there were still many women in San Francisco who were very influential and leave an everlasting impression on the city. Women such as Lillie Hitchcock Coit, Isadora Duncan, and Mary Ellen Pleasant were all very important people living in San Francisco during the 1800 s to 1900 s, and were able to make a difference in their community. Being the first woman to participate in a fire rescue and late be made the mascot for firemen was Lillie Hitchcock Coit. What made her famous amongst the people of San Francisco was from the first time that she participated in a fire rescue with the Knickerbocker Engine Company No.5 (Museum). It was not common for women to work, especially in a job that required strength and manpower . She moved to California from West Point in 1851 with her parents. Ever since she was a young girl, Lillie found a fascination in fire fighting, which is why at fifteen years old she grabbed hold of the vacant spot on the rope and helped the ... Some methods and tools have provided knowledge and sustainability to the system more than others. This is the case of PDCA initially introduce by Dr. Walter Shewhart in the 1920 s and revolutionize by Dr. W. Edwards Deming in 1950 s as a methodology to increase quality. Deming introduce Plan Do Check Act cycle as a learning and improvement methodology (Ransom, 2008). Under this methodology Deming emphasize on the importance of continuous improvement and visualizing the manufacturing industry as a system that can be improve. Ever since the introduction of PDCA cycle other performance enhance methodologies after this one have some basic relation to PDCA. PDCA is broken down in steps as means to make it easy for practitioners to implement. First we start with P, which stands for Plan . Under this phase objectives, questions, predictions, and plans to implement the cycle takes place (Who?, What?, When?, and Where?) (Ransom, 2008). Second we move to Do, this phase is specifically developed for the purpose of education, plan implementation, documentation of problems and observations, and data analysis. • 6. Merit Pay Benefits The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows. This quote by Sydney J. Harris notes that schooling provides opportunities and guides career paths. The effectiveness of teachers can cause a generation of workers, parents, and students to prosper or fail. Yet, with such a burden on their shoulders, they have one of the lowest paying professions. Teachers deserve more money than $54,740 to $58,170 a year. Merit pay should be incorporated into all U.S. school systems. The single salary schedule that schools use now does not reward more hardworking teachers effectively. According to All Teachers Are Not the Same , the single salary schedule was implemented in the 1950 s to provide equality between female and male teachers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, Merit pay programs aimed at groups of teachers who worked together to earn incentive pay, as opposed to individuals competing against one another, resulted in an effect more than two times the average (Iasevoli). Regardless of competition, teachers who work together are the ones who get the rewards. Teachers will realize cooperation is key to getting benefits. Also, the teachers who aren t getting rewards for their effectiveness won t have as strong as a reason as others to stay in the profession, Thus, they would leave which weeds out the ineffective teachers. The equally important text Merit Pay for Teachers Can Lead to Higher Test Scores for Students, a Study Finds points out, teacher participation in a merit pay program led to the equivalent of four extra weeks of student learning, according to a new analysis of 44 studies of incentive pay initiatives in the United States and abroad. With merit pay in place, teachers will be more dedicated to teaching with benefits in mind, will be able to get more and better materials, and could be less stressed which can reflect on the students. Students would be affected positively from merit pay because the classroom environment would be more helpful and the bad teachers would either work harder or leave. Finally, Sawyer concludes that the advances made in racial relation post Revolution has been compromised by all the conditions that I have documented previously, and I agree wholeheartedly with his assessments (131). The Effect on Quality According to Chaffee, Mason, and Leavitt (2007) this act provides coverage for up to 32 million of the 45 million uninsured by 2010. It prevents insurance companies from denying coverage to those with pre existing conditions and also inhibits these companies from removing coverage from people who develop serious illness (Open Congress, 2009). Moreover, it blocks insurance groups from applying annual and lifetime caps on coverage (Chaffee, Mason Leavitt, 2007). The mission of the ACA is to overhaul the inadequate health care system within the country by providing affordable and accessible health care to everyone. Compared to other wealthy countries, the United States ranks last in regard to the five indicators of high performing health systems access, quality, equity, efficiency, and health status. This act has the ability to markedly improve health care. Hence, average citizens embrace ACA because it enables them to receive coverage at an affordable cost. Likewise, many nurses welcome ACA because it ushers in several innovative health care programs that will enhance nursing practice and work environment (Hertel, 2011). The Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009 allows nurses to focus on health care services as opposed to having to battle with insurance companies regarding coverage. (Lactalis) s waste stream that may potentially be sent offsite for disposal during a temporary shutdown of the cheese production facility s whey dryer. This memo is intended to identify environmental risks associated with the hauling and disposal of sweet whey offsite. BACKGROUND Lactalis operates a whey dryer to manufacture dried whey protein from the by product (i.e. sweet whey) generated from the cheese production process. Lactalis is planning to remove the whey dryer from service for a period of up to six (6) months to accomplish repairs to the system, and is considering disposal options for the whey during this downtime period. Lactalis local counsel, Givens Pursley, LLP (Givens Pursley) intends to identify regulatory and environmental risks associated with a three (3) to six (6) month shutdown of the whey dryer. Givens Pursley will identify the regulatory risk, determine if there is a legal liability and see if there is capacity for the whey to be absorbed by local facilities. Forsgren Associates (Forsgren) conducted an analysis of the sweet whey to identify environmental risks associated with a three (3) to six (6) month shutdown of the whey facility. The main issues of the war was over slavery but there were other issues that also like politics and power and economics that also played a role in the war. The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars killing hundreds of thousands of men. The Civil War was fought in the United States from 1861 1865 and was fought between the Southern and Northern states after they became divided. • 12. She Walks In Beauty By Lord Byron Analysis Essay Live Life to the Fullest (An analysis of three of Byron s poems and their messages) Lord Byron, a generation two romantic poet who left an extremely prominent mark in history. Along with his immense talent in poetry, he was also known for his extreme interest in women. Clara Drummond, a romantics biographer explains, Byron had many lovers, and most biographers agree that he had relations with over 1,000 woman. Aside from his immoral activities his poetry is heavily influenced by Nature, as are most of the romantics poets. Lord Byron explains three messages in each of his three poems, She Walks in Beauty, To The Ocean, and Don Juan; their messages being carrying yourself in a proper manner, familiarity at a young age, and how old age brings less excitement. In the poem She Walks in Beauty by Lord Byron explains one very important message. The way a person carries themselves can reveal many things about their character. I m today s society there are constantly changing opinions, new ideas, and false hopes. Through all these different obstacles the ability to keep the same self through them all is a very sought after quality. In the poem She Walk in Beauty Lord Byron explains, And on that cheek, and o er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent (lines 13 14). Byron is speaking of first impressions. When a person is seen for the first time the impression they leave will be everlasting and will set the tone for the upcoming relationship. Another point to be made about Byron s quote is that men are attracted to women who carry themselves gently and mysteriously. Woman have a tendency to be strong willed and very outspoken, but Byron is suggesting that men would rather a quiet and respectful women. To The Ocean is another poem written by Lord Byron he explains another prominent message. Learning and becoming familiar with things at a young contribute to the ability to try new. Fear causes many people to not try new things and ultimately leads them to missing out on the real joys of life. Lord Byron explains this point in the poem To The Ocean when he suggests, And trusted to thy billows far and near, And laid my hand upon thy mane as I do here, (lines 61 62). • 14. The Case Of Gideon V. Wainwright One of the main purposes of our judicial system is to produce fair results. This way the defendant is not convicted for something that they did not do. Although this is supposed to be the case, our society is set up in a way where the rich people have more of an advantage when it comes down to being provided with a lawyer than the poor. In the case of Gideon v. Wainwright, in 1963, the Supreme Court decided that to ensure fair trial, a counsel must be provided for the defendants that cannot afford one. Although the Sixth Amendment only says that someone has the right to a counsel, the purpose for a lawyer is to protect the innocent. This cannot happen if the lawyer does a poor job defending their client. This is why the Supreme Court should set a new precedent stating that everyone is entitled to a high quality defense. A high quality defense would look like someone who presents good arguments that helps back up a side. They are well prepared and knowledgeable about the case. Furthermore, they are well rounded people with good interpretation and speaking skills. Most importantly though, they are good listeners, patient, logical, observance, and open minded about the issue. With that, they have to be able to know how to deal with the issue and come up with alternatives. Gideon was charged for breaking and entering. He could not afford a lawyer and as a result of that he had requested for a lawyer. However, his request was denied by the judge because the judge stated that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

People must find way to support their families and selling drug is on of the ways which of course, relates to jail time as seen in Keepin On. Another problem seen when living in poverty due to location is the school systems and quality of teachers is affect. Essay On Sunshine State Taylor Brent Somogy ENC 4311 Diane Roberts Perceptions of the Sunshine State On more than one occasion, I ve heard people from outside the state say that living in Florida must be just like living on constant vacation. However, from quite a few other non natives of the state, I ve heard the exact opposite. Probably the most distinct negative comparison I can recall was someone equating the state to a cramped and hot hamster cage, where hamsters just keep getting added to the cage no matter how many there already were. As someone who was born here and lived here all their life, it s difficult to agree with either of these of these ideas. One more factor that develops a negative perception of the area is the fact that Florida is Florida and not anywhere else. That probably seems like a ridiculous thing to read but it needs to be said. Natasia Camfield Fort Madison High School Psychology, 5th Block Sigmund Freud s Theories about Psychoanalysis and the Unconscious Mind Sigmund Freud was well known for his theories on psychoanalysis, and it was used to help understand the unconscious mind better. In Freud s lifetime, he grew to be a very influential person of the twentieth century. The western society still uses words that he introduced in his time, some are libido, repression, denial, and neurotic. He was the founding father of the theory of psychoanalysis, which explains human behavior. He also believed that if we clarify our demeanor to ourselves or others, we do not give an honest version of our motivation (www.simplypsychology.org, 2015). On May 6th, 1856, Freud was born and soon came to be an Austrian neurologist. Freud was popular for his different view of the human mind and his practices are well known to this day. When he was just a child of 4, his family moved to Vienna, Austria and he practiced there for most of his life. In, 1881 Freud got his medical degree then soon started his own private practice. Josef Breuer was a colleague of Freud at the beginning of his career. Breuer inspired Freud, which lead him to believe that when a patient has had a traumatic experience in their past, it was latent within their conscious. To help with the traumatic experience, Freud advised them to remember those experiences and accept them (www.biography.com, 2015). Freud showed some of these examples in his ... Eventually, a vivid outline of what seems to be a tiny lizard from a distance proves to grow bigger and bigger as it gets closer to the city. It begins to wreak havoc among the citizens, destroying everything and anything that it comes into contact. From this moment on, the moviegoers know that this monster, Godzilla, is a force to be reckoned with. Decades later, Godzilla still seems to be a popular monster figure that constantly is reimagined in many different forms battling other monstrous characters: King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), Mothra vs Godzilla (1964), Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994). As of today, 29 different Godzilla movies have been produced with the most recent being the 2016 resurgence Shin Godzilla. Due to the significant impact the Godzilla franchise was able to produce in the eyes of the audience, each rendition was able to be successful with its own cinema twist; however, as a monster, the qualities that make Godzilla the monster we know and love has not changed from the original 1954 film to the most recent 2016 release. Freedom from Pain, Injury and Disease ties into these first two freedoms, because as mentioned above, the animal is going to be in pain from an invasive procedure, followed by an increased risk of infection and disease due to the nature of the area being performed on. Animals have a tendency to lick and/or eat anything that they deem as delicious or interesting, whether it is out of boredom, hunger, or curiosity. Having any extra opportunities for bacteria or viruses from feces, other dogs, etc. to enter the wound is increasing the risk of the animal succumbing to a disease, infection or virus that they may not have contracted otherwise. The Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour is one of the welfare concerns most obvious in the case of debarking, as the animal is no longer able to perform the type of communication they use most frequently. Bright, luscious green trees and colorful gardens lined the streets. Children crossed the roads to get to their favorite playgrounds. Teenagers headed to the beaches that bordered a lake in the center of town. Massive concrete flats, serving as apartment buildings, created grids throughout the city. In both This Side of Paradise and The House of Mirth, the authors paint the protagonists as imprisoned. This is a criticism of the society that they live in and is represented in the authors use of imagery, characterization, and the motif of social standing. Wharton uses a great deal of imagery to reflect Lily Bart as imprisoned, while Fitzgerald uses less imagery to describe Amory s predicament but still has his character as a prisoner. Within this idea, Fitzgerald expresses that Amory only loves that which reflects himself, and through that reflection he is able to find who he is at the moment. However, with the broken perfection of Eleanor comes the broken mirror and the losing of himself. Fitzgerald creates Amory s personality to only know himself when he is with other people; in essence he is Fitzgerald s description of a personality. This interpretation continues with Fitzgerald s foreshadowing that Amory will find himself with another woman in the last line. Fitzgerald s criticism lies in the knowledge that people go about life only looking to find themselves in others instead of introspection. Through characterization, both of the authors offer their criticism, one for society and the other for individuals. In both novels, the authors depict the motif of the importance of social standing. With Wharton, this exists in Rosedale s marriage denial: I m more in love with you [Lily] than ever, but if I married you now I d queer myself for good and all, and everything I ve worked for all these years would be wasted (Wharton 245 246). Eliot s use of allusion is fundamental to the structure and themes of his early poetry. In the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock , Eliot uses gripping literary allusions and thought provoking reflections, specifically influenced by Eliot s extensive reading of Dante, the poem s epigraph being an extract from the Inferno, a work that describes a journey through Hell. This poem also makes several references to the Bible with Prufrock comparing himself to John the Baptist and Lazarus, suggesting that he, too, has something acute to reveal to the world, although admitting he is no prophet neither a John the Baptist, nor a Lazarus, nor is he even a hero. One can postulate that it is probable that Prufrock may not be a poem about good people, but about bad ones professing to be good. The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock resembles a form of a dramatic monologue, the words of an individual speaker, who is revealing their inner thoughts and concerns to the audience. Accordingly, Eliot makes use of a number of metaphors to convey Prufrock s lack of confidence and self disgust, with Prufrock correlating his days and ways to cigarette butts to convey his ... The Capture Rate Of Pokemon The Capture Rate of Pokémon in the First Generation Name: Swikriti Dasgupta Teacher: Mr. Hardman Period: 6 Introduction: In 1996, the video game company Nintendo, released a game that revolutionized gaming. They came up with the video game Pokémon . Although I am a girl, I consider myself a gamer at heart. This game is something that is very dear to me because this game established a strong relationship between my sister and I. I have always been inquisitive in nature therefore I always wondered if I could relate my hobby of gaming to math. Although math is a struggle for me, I have decided to step out of my comfort and explore the first game I played in my life and investigate the use of math in the capture rate of the pokemons. This was a simple 2 D, 64 bit game that involved the players moving a character in a fictional world, capturing balls and going on adventures. Players would have to solve difficult puzzles and train their own Pokémon in order to progress through the game. They do this by meeting progressively stronger computer controlled trainers along the way and battling with their Pokémon. The player s Pokémon gain experience through defeating the opponent. The players can also capture new ones as well. Generally, as the player progresses, stronger Pokémon appear, and the players have a chance to capture them. They do this by throwing a tennis sized ball that will transport the entire Pokémon into the ball that they threw with. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002 The Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 (often shortened to SOX) is legislation passed by the U.S. Congress to protect shareholders and the general public from accounting errors and fraudulent practices in the enterprise, as well as improve the accuracy of corporate disclosures. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) administers the act, which sets deadlines for compliance and publishes rules on requirements. The Sarbanes Oxley Act was enacted in response to a series of high profile financial scandals that occurred in the early 2000s at companies including Enron, WorldCom and Tyco that rattled investor confidence. The act, drafted by U.S. Congressmen Paul Sarbanes and Michael Oxley, was aimed at improving corporate governance and accountability. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 39. Investigating The Intrinsic Differences Among The... Abstract The following research paper tests and investigates the intrinsic differences among the two tasks present in the generation task and the affects it has on memory. We believe that the relation of generating a word compared to simply reading a word has a more lasting effect on the brain and its memory sensors. This experiment consisted of generated words or read words followed by a rule (associate, category, opposite, rhyme, synonym) in which the participant was given the first word and asked to read or generate the following word following the rule type. After a certain period of time the participants, which consisted of students currently enrolled at Texas A M, were asked to recall the words they generated or read. Results indicated that that when a word is generated it is recalled at a more accurate rate. This essay is geared to establish and report findings based on the phenomenon manifested among a vast amount of experiments over the years, the generation effect. While there were many informative articles which slightly applied to the generation effect no true conclusion is reached, therefore this essay attempts to compile all ideas to come to one solid finding. The generation effect was developed as a part of memory research, and it states that individuals tend to recall words that they personally generated better than words participants were given. Since this phenomenon has been an important part in many studies yet seemed to have no true solid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After bringing yours and Lucanus petitions to my own husband, and then to our local Aedile last week, I had no such luck in having them answered. I thought perhaps, with my noble blood and the respected Patrician name of my husband I could perhaps get an audience with our beloved Emperor. So, there I was last week, walking through the streets of Rome, my ladies in waiting all aflutter around me, dodging Plebian neighborhoods like a plague from the gods, following whispers from strolling senators in their bright white togas. My only mission was to find our emperor Trajan and command to have your petitions answered. However, as you know dear sister, I am easily distracted by the wondrous beauties the gods have bestowed upon our great city. Sister, have you ever actually taken the time to look at the beauty around you? I know there is not much where you reside on the outskirts of town, but next time you go to the market, please do. In fact, visit the markets outside of Emperor Trajan s forum the next time you come further into the city. Can you imagine two whole levels of market stalls? Each one with more and more goods to purchase, by the gods it is a sight to behold sister. Lewis argued that he was not writing an allegory but a supposal instead. Lewis claims that he tried to hypothesize what it would be like for Jesus to live in another world. In the Chronicles of Narnia, I believe that C.S. Lewis wrote an allegory. By definition an allegory typically reveals a hidden meaning behind something, which in this case would be the message behind the characters and their actions within Narnia. This can be supported throughout the series in which Lewis makes small but noticeable innuendos to religious beliefs. One book that can be compared to this series to support the claim that Lewis wrote an allegory would be the Bible. The second book, which could support this claim of allegorical writing, would be Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. Lewis also shares some similar viewpoints with Augustine.
