The Return Short Story
Expectations, Hope Change can be the most significant aspect of a person s life, but it can also be
the most frightening. When we encounter a location or a person that has been transformed, we are
hopeful, but also fearful, to encounter the toll the change has had on them. In the short stories titled
The Return and A Marker on the Side of a Boat the protagonists are absent from a location that is
significant to them. Upon their returns, they are disappointed to find that change has swept away
everything they used to know. Both protagonists in the stories have their hopes destroyed by the
reality that everything is different than the way it was before. Throughout The Return , Kamau was
anxious for his return to his home. He was... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

brooding over my failure , hoping that he will miraculously remember the woman s house. The
man is obviously upset about not being able to recognize her home because he tells the reader
that after the war, on my rare visits to Hanoi, I would always return to the same street . He
struggles with the conflict of not recalling the location of her house, therefore, losing her. The
man cannot let go of her memory; he clings on to this remote, alien city, with which I have had
no intimacy . He could no longer trace back his steps to the exact point because ..the trolley,

Essay On St Marys Sewage Treatment Plant
1. Brief history of the plant(s) including design capacity and future expansion
1.1 Introduction
This report will cover the history, operations and future potential for the St Marys Sewage
Treatment Plant and St Mary s Water Recycling Plant, which located in an industrial area in St
Mary s, a western suburb of Sydney.
A group of subject 48350 Environmental and Sanitation Engineering students visited both plants,
and observed the operations and maintenance of these wastewater treatment systems.

and implement more recycled water processing plants around Sydney where the population is
predicted to increase significantly in next 5 years period (from 4 to 6 million).
More urgently however, is the need for infrastructure rejuvenation, prompting the SewerFix

Commedia Dell Arte Research Paper
The Influence of Commedia Dell arte on Le Barbier de SГ©ville ou la PrГ©caution inutile and Il
Barbieri di Siviglia
Introduction
Commedia dell arte played a crucial role in the history of Western theater, its underlying satire
and irony ultimately shaping the development of comedy on the dramatic as well as the lyric
stages, (Fisher 17). This paper will discuss, first, commedia dell arte s satirical performances, their
circumstances, and their original audience, and tell how this theatrical form became well known
throughout Western Europe. It then will discuss two enduring popular stage works: Sterbini and
Rossini s opera buffa Il Barbieri di Siviglia, and Beaumarchais s satirical comedy Le Barbier de

Furthermore,.Moliere had embedded the scenario in a much more complex story, one with many
players and plot talk worthy of romantic comedy, Beaumarchais, however, adopted the entire
commedia dell arte trope, with the only modification, mentioned above, of the young nobleman
being incognito, creating a straight comedic satire. He wrote, As the play opened, an old man, in
love with his ward, arranges to marry her the next day. A young suitor, who is cleverer than he,

Feminism, Abortion And Contraception
I recently spoke with the doctor who delivered me into this world nearly eighteen years ago. He
s been a friend of the family years, even before I was born. Now retired, he had delivered
newborns for over thirty years. I recently asked him what the ratio was between older and
younger women giving birth these days. He replied, More older women than you d think...
every once in a while, you might see some poor 16 year old girl having a rough time, but usually
20 to 30 year old women with an occasional 40 year old having another kid. That was the answer
I was expecting. Between 1970 and 1986 the women in the United States 30 to 39 years of age
having their first child doubled, and the number of women 40 to 44 years old having their... Show

Children were seen as a cause of women being interpreted as secondary citizens, and that a
woman could be her best if she at least chose to have children later in life. As most feminists at
this time were white, educated women, feminists seeking encouraged women to become
educated, go to college, and/or start a career (Welles Nystrom). A 1982 poll conducted found that
86% of women who gave birth after 28 years of age, were quoted agreeing they wanted it all, and
desired to become a career woman and a housewife (Poelker and Baldwin). Though a career or
college education may not necessarily be the top priority for all women, today, it usually comes
first as financial stability for anyone is obviously important. Who wants to take care of a kid in
college anyway? School is hard enough. That s a good two to eight years where a kid is going to
get in the way; especially if one doesn t have any other family for support, and starting a career
can also be equally as difficult. I wouldn t want a kid either if I was a woman seeking a college
education or a career. Having a child later in life gives a woman the option of having a child when
she is ready, not the child. Furthermore, in the early seventies, the Supreme Court in the case of
Roe v Wade made abortionlegal. Just twenty five years later, the total number of abortions totaled
nearly 37 million. During those years

Environmental Concerns And Climate Change
Proposed Research
Environmental concerns and climate change are influencing and shaping the future of the power
industry. As a result, the electricity required to meet the growing demand is mainly generated from
renewable energy resources, and this trend is expected to continue in the next decades [1]. Hydro
and wind are major renewable energy resources and are free of greenhouse gas emissions [2]. This
makes them valuable environmentally sustainable and economic resources for power generation
around the world. A hydro wind hybrid power system is an excellent combination for improved
reliability, where the resources abound [3]. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there is enormous
potential for hydro and wind renewable energy resources, with ... Show more content on

This condition imposes unique challenges on the planning and operation of a hydro wind
integrated power system in a reliable manner [8]. Previous studies on wind penetration issues and
solutions found that the limiting factors of wind integration include penetration level, forecasting
reliability, geographic diversity, hydro generation flexibility and control of the overall system [6].
Control is a key enabling factor for the deployment of renewable energy systems [9]. Control
techniques such as linear and dynamic programming, genetic algorithms, and neural networks,
proposed by past research, for the control and economic dispatch of renewable energy systems,
have not been acknowledged to be error free [3]. Two major flaws identified in existing techniques
include the lack of ease of use, and adaptability to new situations and evolving regulations [3].
These flaws pose major operational challenges to utilities and thus, make control technologies
optimization an imperative research endeavor.
In 1998, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Policy 1 Generation Control
and Performance Standard (CPS) was enforced to ensure effective frequency control in
interconnected power systems. In this policy, for example, it is required that each balancing

My Complicated Family History
The mix of my complicated family history and my strong supportive mother have shaped me into
the person that I am today. My biological father, Clint, battled with a secret drug addiction that my
sweet mother knew nothing about until it was too late. When I was only a year old, the drug
addiction had gotten the best of Clint and he made the decision to take his own life, leaving me and
my motherheart broken. Clint s choices impacted my life in such ways that I cannot explain.
Growing up, it was just me and my mother until I was four, however, in this time we took the bad
situation that we were in and we did not let it get the best of us. We chose to move forward and to
take positive things from this horrific time. We learned through this experience that life goes on. No
matter how hard the situation is, you must move on. Learning this mentality at such a young age
has taught me that I cannot fret the small things, I have to look at the bigger picture because that is
what really matters. My mother is truly such an amazing woman and her guidance has shaped me
into the young woman that I am. We have battled through so many hardships together but she has
always taught me that I can and will get through everything life throws at me. My mother could
have chosen to give up when my biological... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

friend Riley. I catch myself feeling as though I have a relatively normal life, but when I take a step
back and look, my life had the opportunity to go in a very negative direction and truthfully I had a
good reason for it to so. However, my mother and I chose to move on and today we do live a

Comparing Disney s A Thousand And One Arabian Nights
Many aspects color how exactly a translator interprets a text, allowing for a great deal of variation
to occur between different translator s versions of the same text. This holds true for the Middle
Eastern classic A Thousand and One Arabian Nights, as anyone can observe a multitude of
differences between the extensive numbers of English translations that have been released over the
past three centuries. Cultural beliefs and ideas play a large role in the variances, but do not account
for all of the discrepancies, especially in terms of maturity level. A translations maturity level is
based on more than just the translator s cultural landscape. Though other factors influence
translation as well, cultural values still play a large role in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The infamous Richard Burton comes from a similar cultural background to the aforementioned
Edward Lane, but his translation of A Thousand and One Arabian Nights is perhaps the most
explicit English translation to date. This is not because of radically different cultural values, but
simply based upon the intent of the translators. Burton s intent is also visible in his means of
publication. British conservatism was at its height during the time in which Burton was publishing
his translation, making it so he had to publish said translation privately in order to avoid violating
laws such as the Obscene Publications Act. As one can see via his blatant violation of the law, as
well as Burton s general demeanor, cultural values played an extraordinarily small role in the
maturity level of his

Feminism In Gimba Kakanda s A Letter To My Unborn Daughter
In A Letter to My Unborn Daughter, Gimba Kakanda writes, Sweetheart: This letter is a betrayal
of my previous convictions, and an apology for actually allowing a society of chauvinists to train
my mind into agreeing that the womenfolk are indeed inferior, merely created from our ribs to be
chained into marital slavery. Feminism, as evinced in Kakanda s letter, is a particularly urgent issue
in the genre of world literature. In countries with a history of colonialism, those who are able to
speak and who they speak for are vitally important questions. In fact, many parallels exist between
the colonialism and the oppression of women: language, participation, and land. Because of the
inherent connection postcolonialism and feminism, many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

To legitimize their claims to ownership of other countries, the colonists used anthropological
theories which increasingly portrayed the peoples of the colonized world as inferior, childlike, or
feminine, incapable of looking after themselves ... and requiring the paternal rule of the west. In
fact, the practice of describing race in gendered terms emphasized the masculinity of colonizers,
while effeminizing the native peoples. This tactic was used in colonial India when the British
officials attempted to pass the Ilbert Bill. This legislation emphasized the stereotypes of the manly
Englishman and the effeminate Bengali babun in order to argue that Indian subjects were not able
to competently decide the fate of Englishmen in criminal cases. In this case, white, British women
defended the Bengalis right and ability to decide legal outcomes. These women, like the Bengali
men, were disqualified from playing an active part in politics. Recognizing their commonality in
situation, the women stood up for the Bengali men and protested the Ilbert Bill.
However, colonist women were not always allies to the native peoples. Postcolonial feminist
literature often uncovers and describes their participation in the system of colonization. The writers

The Moon and Tides Observation Essay
An observation of the Moon was conducted from Friday, November 8, 2013 to Thursday,
November 14, 2013. The study of the Moon during this period occurred consistently between the
hours of 8 and 9 p.m. EST within the Northern Hemisphere at 37.3346В° N, 79.5228В° W
(Bedford, V.A.). The Moon was noted to be illuminated on the right side and had a dark shadow
on the left side indicating a waxing phase. The light region grew over the surface of the Moonwith
each subsequent night. The first night s phase was waxing crescent with over 25 percent of the
Moon lit up. The next night, the light had grown to cover more of the Moon as it continued through
its waxing crescent phase. On November 10th, the Moon exhibited traits of being at first quarter or

The new moon is the first phase of the lunar cycle. It occurs when the Moon and Sun are lined up
on the same side of the Earth so that the moon is not visible from Earth. Next, the waxing crescent
moon phase is displayed whereby the Moon s surface is less than half lit up. The word waxing
means that the light side of the Moon is moving towards the full moon phase. A person viewing the
Moon from the Northern Hemisphere will see a waxing moon if any portion of the left side of
the Moon is dark and the right side is illuminated. If the Moon is observed on consecutive nights
during the waxing phase, they will notice that the light section of the Moon is actually growing
during this phase. The next phase is the first quarter moon, which is often referred to as a half
moon because half of the Moon, the right side, is illuminated. The phrase first quarter is not used
to describe the shape of the Moon but is used to express that the Moon has completed a quarter of
its orbit around the earth. At this point, the Sun and Moon are at a 90 degree angle in relation to
the earth. Next in the moon cycle is the waxing gibbous which is characterized by more than half
of the Moon being illuminated and the left portion of the Moon displaying a smaller shadow area.
The full moon follows the waxing gibbous phase and is the easiest phase to recognize because the
moon is at its fullest illumination in the night

not the protesters. This bias which is also shown to journalists such as Norman Ebbut could be
the reason why public opinion started to sway on such a scale, so late. If Chamberlain did have

Ebbut s writings and his withdrawl from Berlin, which is reciprocated through the majority of

Reflection Of The Curriculum Portfolio
How well does your portfolio reflect the course goals and requirements (as defined in the syllabus)?
My portfolio is able to meet the course goals because it clearly describes my personal goals in
both positions. They are both tailored to the position that I am applying for, in that they take words
from the application in my short answer and cover letter specifically. I worked to make my online
presence more professional with a fairly distinct change in my profile, that prior focused on my
current job, that now looks forward to the positions that I hope to achieve. With my research of the
audiences, I found two positions that I think will provide me with skills and experiences that will
help me reach my future goals as well. The requirements according to the syllabus as to having a
copyedited final version is met in this draft also, and the audience is kept in mind in all citations.
This material has been submitted on time, and includes all required portions therefore meeting the

Double Muscling
Selective breeding
Selective breeding is a process where animal and plant breeders select individuals with desirable
traits and breed them to produce offspring with these desirable traits, which are determined by
desirable alleles in the selected organism s genotype. This produces offspring with favourable
traits. (3) The animal that will be discussed is the Belgian blue cattle. The Belgian blue cattle has
the characteristic of what is called double muscling. Double muscling is caused by the recessive
mutation of the myostatin gene, and naturally occurs. (12) The myostatin sequence present in
Belgian blue cattle is an 11 nucleotide deletion in the third exon which causes a frame shift that
eliminates virtually all of the mature, active region of the molecule .(14) It prevents the control of
muscle growth, and causes there to be more muscle fibres. However, it is with sacrificing other
important body functions such as reproductions, and normal fat and bone deposition. (12) This
creates cattle that have up to 40% more muscle mass than other normal cattle. Most of the extra
muscle is lean meat. The Belgian blue cattle was created for the dairy and meat industry, but now is
generally for meat.(17) The Belgian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

suckle when young. (12) This means they do not get enough nutrients from their mother s milk as

This means that there will be fewer cows and bulls that are able to breed, to produce Belgian blue
calves. This means that the survival of the Belgian blue cattle population

Essay on Factors Leading to The Collapse of Past Societies
At present day, our worldwide civilization of the human race continues to surpass many
achievements of other past societies. Everyday, new technological advances are being achieved
and the population is growing faster than it ever previously has. We must look back at past
civilizations and analyze them to understand what is in store for us in the future. In the pursuit of
progress, human societies create problems they do not have the resources or political motivation to
solve, for fear of short term losses in status or quality of life, which prevents further advancements
and sometimes leads to collapse.1 Three factors that have enabled past civilizations to fall into

Collectively, it is not hard to imagine each city state setting themselves up for failure due to their
competitive nature. Competition for power and an increasing need for prosperity lead to Copan s
collapse, and ultimately the Classic Maya civilization as a whole. Secondly, the Roman civilization
had a number of social disputes, which contributed to its collapse. Among those, political
instability emerged as the root cause for its downfall.2 One of the revealing ironies of Rome s
history is that the city state s native democracy withered as its empire grew. (Wright, 90). The
assassination of Julius Caesar fueled existing conflicts further. Self proclaimed emperors after
Caesar s death and the overall political imbalance of the weakening empire lead to war, invasion
and trade disruption. These disturbances created a ripple effect that lead to massive amounts of
crime, increased cases of disease, and widespread famine. Without the social conflicts regarding
political relations, the Roman Empire may not have fallen as extensively. Thirdly, social conflicts
in China marked the end of the Ch in dynasty in 206 B.C. Hungary peasants rebelled against their
oppressive leaders. Revolting peasants dug into an emperors tomb, stole weapons from his
Terracotta army, and used them to overthrow the existing emperors at the time. Although initially
viewed as a positive event, the overthrowing of their own leaders proved to have a devastating

Comparison of The Red Room and The Signalman Essay
Comparison of The Red Room and The Signalman.
The two stories we were asked to compare had one common themes which were the building of fear
and suspense throughout.
One clear difference between the stories was the function of fear in the stories. In the The Red
Room the author does not only use fear as a means of evolving the story but also places it at the
centre of the story. The Signalman uses fear of the supernatural as a means of making the story
more believable as done in The Red Room . Although both stories are equally frightening, I feel that

The narrators are not named in either of the stories but in The Red
Room the narrator is described in more detail, he is described as the
28 year old young man . He is the only youthful character in the story, all the other characters seem
to blend in with the castle; they are old and grotesque. They seem to add to the atmosphere of fear
and the supernatural, they also seem to symbolise the castle itself; they are both mysterious and
rather threatening.
In The Signalman there are only two characters who both play major roles in the unravelling of
the story. The Signalman himself is physically described to fit in with his grim surroundings, he
seems to be part of the gloominess of the railway cutting, All what is revealed other than his
appearance is his job.
No names are revealed in either of the stories, I think that this creates a distance between the readers
and the characters as there is no need for the readers to be familiar with them because these are both
short stories. Instead, the writers in both stories concentrate on the events and their description
rather than the characters.
As both stories were written such a long time a go, their language is very much part of their era.

Familiarity Principle/ Mere Exposure Effect
One example of how evolutionary perspectives can inform social psychological research is the
concept of the mere exposure effect or familiarity principle. The mere exposure effect is a

Collapse Of The Minoan Civilization
Since the rediscovery of the site of Knossos by Sir Arthur Evans in 1900, the cause of the fall of the

have proposed various hypotheses to the mystery, mainly regarding to environmental factors such
as the eruption of Thera Volcano and subsequent tsunamis, earthquakes and climate change; or
social and political factors like societal conflicts and invasion of the Mycenaeans. This paper

opened the way for Mycenaean domination of Aegean (Middleton, G.D., 2012).
The Minoan Civilization was a civilization of the Bronze Age which arose in the island of Crete,
Greece and flourished from around 2600 BC to 1100 BC. It is considered to be the first
advanced civilization in Europe, where the Minoans formed complex and vibrant societies
consisting of warriors, merchants, artists, farmers, sailors, sea traders and all kinds of people.
They were also the first to use a written language in Europe, namely Linear A. Despite how
intelligent these people were, the Minoan Civilization collapsed at its peak of splendor in 1450
BC, leaving traces of its grandeur and essential clues to their legend.
The most popular theory to their collapse is associated with the tremendous eruption of Thera.

The Hoover Dam
Review of Literature
I. Introduction to the Hoover Dam According to the Cobuild Advanced Learning Dictionary, a
dam is defined as, A wall that is built across a river in order to stop the water flowing and to make a
lake. The Hoover Dam is located in the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada. It was first
called the Boulder Dam but was later named the Hoover Dam. It was named after President Herbert
Hoover. Hoover was not only president but also an engineer, and when he was Secretary of
Commerce (before being President) he urged the construction of the dam. The dam is 726 feet tall
and is about 1200 feet wide. The Hoover Dam was starting to be built in March of 1931.

This is because of a drought in Lake Mead and a high demand for the water in the Colorado River.
If the water level falls too low, the dam will no longer be able to generate power. This is causing
new workers to make five new wide head turbines that are being designed to be used by 2017.
These turbines are made to work with less flow of water.
II. How It Was Built There were many steps to building the Hoover Dam. The first step was to
blast the canyon walls of the Black Canyon. The blasting of the canyon walls helped make four
diversion tunnels to move the constant flow of the Colorado s River water around where the
workers were constructing the dam. There were two tunnels made on each side of the canyon.
When it was summer the tunnels would be very very hot ( about 140, but in the winter the
tunnels would be the exact opposite. When the canyon walls were blasted the extra rock was
then used to make a different route for the Colorado River. After blasting the walls and clearing
the rock, workers would then clear the walls of the Black Canyon. During the clearing of the
walls, the workers carried 44 pound jackhammers to get rid of the unstable rock. Workers hung to
heights of 800 feet to do this treacherous

Jean-Jacques Rousseau s The Mission
The Mission, a film set in 1507, reflects on a Jesuit mission settlement, torn apart by Spanish and
Portuguese government. With the papacy caught in the midst of this turmoil, conflicting ideas of
injustice and moral sense drive the message of the film. In connection to the Enlightenment, an era
of new philosophical ideas from the 1400s up until the 1600s, Jean Jacques Rousseau s ideas of
individuality, human nature and corruption are best represented through the films.
As a philosopher in France, Rousseau focused heavily on human nature and what led human beings
to change. From innocence to malice, Rousseau believed people became corrupted by society; their
impure actions resulted from societal expectations. In one of his works, Rousseau ... Show more

He felt that people lived too naively, listening to everything Church and state told them was right
and obliged. He says, ...in the midst of so much philosophy, humanity, and civilization, and of such
sublime codes of morality, we have nothing to show for ourselves but a frivolous and deceitful
appearance, humor without virtue, reason without wisdom, and pleasure without happiness. () To
him, government expected everyone to present themselves as copies, with little room for
originality and individuality. Those in positions of power had crooked values, only wanting to
benefit themselves. Because the government was power hungry and constantly feening for more
land and power, they held too much control. In the film, as the Cardinal visits the missions, he
sees their beauty and falls in love with their complexity and peaceful structure. Even though he
sees the good in the missions and understands that they protect and convert Indians to his religion,
he feels as if money is more important. Caught in the middle of a dispute between the Spanish
and the Portuguese, the Cardinals tears peaceful living apart, all for an expansion of territory.
Rousseau had caught on to the game the Church and government played, he urged people to speak
out. One of the most corrupt figures in the film was Don Cabeza, a slave only. Yearning for more

Bioregionalism gives the large scale geographical boundaries to determine an area, such as the
peaks of a mountain. Bioregionalism is, the idea that societies should be organized on the basis
of local communities, which attempt to provide for their basic needs on the basis of resources
available at the local level (Evanoff, R., O Neil, E.). Evanoff and O Neil prove societies strive
more when they are divided by their natural barriers. Determining the bioregion of an area allows
us to know our watersheds, soil type(s), and mountain ranges. Bioregions are important because it
allows us to know the features of our area. Knowing our soil type allows farmers to know where
their crops will strive or not. Knowing the watersheds allows us to learn how to preserve our water
resource and know where it s coming from. The history of the area, or native culture helps us see

The Importance Of A Liberal Arts Education
When I applied to college, one aspect when applying which was very important to me was to go
to a liberal arts school. There were many reasons why this was important to me, from having
heard about it from my counselors to finding it important to have a broad education. I chose Hope
College as the school I wanted to go to because it brought together the importance of God and
Christianity and it also is a liberal artsschool. When arriving at the school, I began to find out more
about how important a liberal arts educationis to increase your knowledge. The first part of a
liberal arts education that stood out to me, was having general education requirements. An
important part of developing as a person for me is to increase my knowledge and intelligence as
much as I can and in as many different areas as I can. A liberal arts education helps me achieve
this goal of widening my horizons. By having general education requirements, I can explore
different curriculum like religion or social sciences. By doing this I am broadening my
knowledge on topics I am never learned about before. As well as doing that, I also can find out
which new topics I enjoy. As a freshman, I am unsure of where I want to end up in life and what
I want to major in, but by having access to a liberal arts education, I have an opportunity to see
what new subjects I am passionate about. This semester I took Introduction to Sociology and I

Letter From Birmingham Jail By Martin Luther King Jr.
After reading Letter from Birmingham Jail , I was in awe by Martin Luther King Jr. s rhetorical
skills writing with immense emotion and redefining terms used to criticize him, more specifically
extremism. Additionally, the southern clergy challenged Martin Luther King Jr. s ability to lead
by questioning whether MLK was teetering along the line of being an extremist; this is due to
the fact that the majority Caucasian southern clergy believed racial injustice would be solved
without direct action. However, King responded in great detail to the southern clergy expressing
his viewpoint on extremism and the best way to solve injustice. When addressing the case of
extremism, King stated that he views the subject as people being an extremist for hate or love,
injustice or justice. Then he expressed his view on social change with respect to time, stating there
is an irrational notion that there is something in the very flow of time that will inevitably cure all
ills. Altogether, Martin Luther King Jr. effectively communicates to the southern clergy (the
followers/collaborators) his point of view on the misconceptions of how to deal with social
change and utilizes the Social Change Model . Throughout the Letter from Birmingham Jail there
are key parts that directly relate to the Social Change Model and The Seven C s of Change . While
the C s are usually grouped into individual values, group values, or society/community values, due

How Is Celie Presented In The Color Purple
In the novel, The Color Purple, a character by the name of Celie is described as being oppressed.
She is oppressed throughout most of her life, especially as a child. She is constantly being put
down by men that see or talk to her. However, Celie is strong willed and that strength is
channeled through how she deals with how she was treated while being backed by the people
who respect her and unified through the love her and her sister share. Celie s strength is
signified from how the men treated her because every time they attacked her, verbally or
physically, she took it and never gave it back. The first example you see is in the very beginning
as it shows her father taking her baby and finding out that he took another before and they were

have the ability to have Shug respect her. The other character that respected Celie is Sofia as
Celie helped her when she needed it most. This shows Celie s strength because Sofia was once
mad at Celie for telling her husband to beat her and for Celie to be able to make up for it and get

Perspective In Elie Wiesel s Night
Perspective is important. The way you look at something may be drastically different from the
way I look at something, giving us a potentially vast difference in opinion. This applies to literature
as well and is shown in the different narratives the stories are written in. Different stories are better
written in different types of narratives (including first, second or third person narratives) and Night
is no exception. Night is written in a first person narrative, which in my opinion, is very effective in
carrying across the author s point. First person narration in this novel allows us to connect with the

That is to say writing in first person can allow the author to be more descriptive with the way he
writes his scenes. An example of a very descriptive scene is when the Jews were on the train

the Jews tore each other apart for the crust of it. An especially gruesome part of this event is

Musical Theatre As A Theatrical Performance
Musical Theatre is a theatrical performance when the story is told through dialogue, song, and
dance. Back then, people didn t Snap Chat, Face Time or watch TV for entertainment; they would
go to the Theatre for a night out, first date, etc. To give a more definitive description of how
musicals evolved, affected, and influenced throughout history, a time line of major musicals that
defined certain stages of Musical Theatrewill probably help people understand what makes it so
unique.
Now a quick history lesson, Musical Theatre technically was created in 5th Century BCE Ancient
Greece, when staged comedies and tragedies would be told with a bit music and dance...but
Musicals didn t fully emerge into the world until the early 20th Century when the art form went to
London, England, and then to America, which formed the famous theatre district, Broadway. Now
that the basics are covered of where Musical Theatre came from, this paper is more about how
Broadway Musicals evolved into what they are in present day, how people have reacted to such
performances, and how musical theatre has impacted not only America, but also the world.
The first era of Musical Theatre actually started in the 1920 s 1930 s during the Great Depression.
This was a the first time there were musicals other than the fun, young, and enjoyable shows, the
first example of this would be the musical Show Boat, which premiered in December 1927, the

area which is profoundly affected by the changing climate. The average temperature in the Arctic
is rising twice as fast as elsewhere in the world (nrdc.org). Because of this, the ice cap is getting

Generations before us did not take this measure, but maybe our generation should. The melting
ice caps are having a dramatic affect on the polar regions of the earth. For example, the average
temperature in the Arctic is rising twice as fast than the rest of the world (nrdc.org). The once
prominent ice is now melting at a dramatic speed, which is affecting native people, wildlife, and
plants. When the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf splintered, the freshwater lake that it surrounded drained
into the ocean, along with the ecosystem that inhabited it. Polar bears, whales, walrus and seals
are changing their feeding and migration patterns, making it harder for native people to hunt
them (nrdc.org). Because of the flooding, entire villages will be uprooted order to avoid being
swamped. Also, the Arctic coastlines are beginning to move as well. The melting ice caps are
threatening the native peoples cultural identity and their very survival. Ice dependant animals,
such as walruses and ring seals will be greatly affected by the melting ice caps (treehugger.com).
They have fewer places to rest on, as well as fewer places to hunt. If the ice caps keep melting, their
lives will become in great danger. The melting ice caps are not only affecting the Polar Regions,
but they are also affecting the rest of the world as well in the form of rising ocean levels. Melting
ice caps are contributing to rising ocean levels as well.

fibers than other students. Some students have asthma or other physical difficulties that make it
difficult to measure up with other students when all students are required to get a certain score on
a fitness test to get an A. Using goal setting where all students can be successful by reaching their
goals and showing improvement could be a positive influence for future motivation. While
problem based learning can help students to learn and use goal setting (Hubball 2006), goal
setting may not always help students to achieve greater fitness levels. Hill (2015) found that those
students who set goals over an 18 week period did not have any significant improvement over those
students that did not set goals on the pacer and push up tests. Similarly, in another study looking at
the effects of goal setting on Native elders found only a weak correlation between goal setting and
improvement on the amount of steps taken in a day using a pedometer (Sawchuck 2011). The
problem with this study was that the researchers set the goals for the participants. It may be more
important that students set their own

Essay on Significance of Canada s Role in the Korean War
On June 25th, 1950, North Korean forces crossed the 38th Parallel and invaded the Republic of
Korea (South Korea). This was a battle between democracy and communism, where the United
Nations supported the South Democrats while the Soviet Union in cooperation with China
supported the North Communists. Most Canadians knew nothing about Koreaduring the 1950s.
Despite that, the Canadian army still sent an entire brigade group to military operations there.
Besides the two world wars, the Korean Warremains Canada s third bloodiest oversea conflict as it
left 516 Canadians killed and at least 1,200 injured. Canada made significant military contributions
to the Korean War as was demonstrated by the 2nd Battalion of the Princess Patricia s... Show more

The brigade inflicted great damage to the enemy troops with minimal casualties. Ultimately, Canada
s actions earned them a United States Presidential Unit Citation and prevented the communists from
crossing through the 38th Parallel and recapturing South Korean territory once again. In July 1951,
after US President Truman fired General MacArthur for insubordination, Truman and his new
military commanders started truce negotiations at Panmunjom. Nonetheless, battle continuously
ensued across the 38th Parallel as negotiations stalled. Canada s navy played a noteworthy role in
defending UN aircraft carriers for the chance to apply political pressure against North Korea. As
Canada s eight naval ships defended the UN aircraft, a mass series of bombings took place on 13
hydroelectric generating facilities known as the Attacks on Sui Ho Dam. The UN wanted to
make the message clear that they were willing to make this war as difficult and expensive as
possible for the communists. The strikes were successful in destroying up to 90% of North Korea
s facilities and causing a blackout for 2 weeks; 23% of power was also reduced from Northeast
China. Eventually, this political pressure contributed to North Korea to agree and sign armistice.
Furthermore, the ships were also responsible for short bombardments and the eradication of North
Korean trains and railways. Although the political pressure from the Sui Ho Dam

WickID Candles is a candle company that features customizable candles that can define a person s
mood or personality hence the ID in the name. This franchise currently has twenty five stores in
five states (North Carolina, Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, and Washington). WickID Candles

If WickID Candles implements the BYOD plan, each employee would be able to use their
personal cell phones for work purposes. They will be used to keep up with the workplace
environment at home or whenever they are out of the office. This will allow to them have access
to personal work data whether via their work email or access to the company s personal sites.
With BYOD, employees would be able to use their mobile devices to interact with customers,
manage accounts, and even create new aspects of our online store. This plan would potentially give
workers the flexibility to work at the leisure of their homes and to continue to work without being
tied to the office. Our goal is that this will increase engagement with customers and increase work
productivity. IBM states that there are three main benefits of BYOD. There s an increase in
productivity and innovation, employees are satisfied, and the company can sometimes save money.
Keep in mind that the benefits all depend on the situation. When employees are motivated to work,
productivity is high. According to IBM, employees are more comfortable with their personal
phones and tend to have upgraded versions. The enterprise will then benefit from the latest features
on the employees phones allowing them to be more productive. With that,

Ray Bradbury: His View on Technology
Ray Bradbury as a person has no particular fondness or aversion to technology, yet as a writer he
is disapproves of the way society has become so lazy and dependent on machinery. Bradbury warns
his readers of the consequences of technology. Technology is a wondrous invention that sparks
creativity in others, yet it has as much negative potential as it has positive potential. the same
technology that is used to make life simpler can cause nuclear destruction. Bradbury himself has no
particular fondness or aversion to technology, but his writing always warns of the consequences of
being too dependent on technology. Usually his stories revolve around modern problems, which

Bradbury predicts what technology could do to society through the morals of The Veldt, The
Pedestrian, and There Will Come Soft Rains.
In his story, The Veldt , Bradbury displays the terrors of America s devotion to material goods
and how it affects society s technology usage. The story is centered on an average American
family of four living in a futuristic smart house. The house has a device called the nursery, which
is a sort of metaphor for the television. The nursery is triggered my images in the mind of the
controller and produces holographic images onto the walls of the room. After the pampered
Peter and Wendy Hadley are denied a trip on a helicopter, they begin to envision a sweltering,
African veldt. This veldt seems to represent the psychological sate of the Hadley family. Bradbury
s description of the veldt is so vivid that it seems as if the children were actually in an African
savannah and not daydreaming in the middle of the United States. Those two children are said to
have a rather high intelligence in the story, yet they do not seem to act maturely. This fact is
evident in

Utilitarianism In Criminal Justice
Considering the three variations of consequentialist ethics, ethical egoism, contractualism, and
utilitarianism: How does these three areas of ethics effect achieving positive means and ends in the
criminal justice system?
This week s discussion seems to be very interesting and can be looked at many different ways, as
we explore the ethical framework we start with consequentialist ethics. This deals with three (3)
things, ethical egoism, contractualism, and utilitarianism. This type of ethics asks the following
questions: What will happen if I do a certain act? Who will be affected and how would this affect
them? How would other alternatives or decisions affect or producer different outcomes (Arrigo
Williams, 2008, p. 145)?
Something that I found fascinating that should opened up the discussion is the issue that was
discussed in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A good example of this would be something to the effect if you support a certain political candidate
with contributions and work with agreements made in the form of jobs, promotions that act would
be wrong in that sense.
Utilitarianism, this type is very simple and is purely based on happiness, it tends to maximizes
all the good in something and minimize all the bad in the act. We all have the desire to be happy
and considered this to be the ultimate goal and happiness factor (Arrigo Williams, 2008, p. 146).
Money, most think money tends to bring happiness therefore many in the law enforcement arena
attempt to maximize this portion of their life whether its by working extra side jobs or many
hours of overtime to bring in extra dollars for family or extra items they feel they have a need or

Even after a addict has stopped using a drug they often relapse and begin using the drug again. Both
behavioral and environmental factors play a role in addiction. Some environmental factors that can
play a role in addiction are parents, family members, and peers abusing drugs. These
environmental factors play a role in a person developing an addiction because they are around it
and see it, that is all they know. Genetic factors are inherited. If a parent is an addict the children is
likely to be a addict. People who have an addiction are likely to build up a tolerance against the
drug. Tolerance means a person who uses a drug repeatedly over a period of time, the original
dosage of the drug will not give the desired effect, so a higher dosage is needed to get the desired
effect ( Addiction , 2017).

  • 2. The Return Short Story Expectations, Hope Change can be the most significant aspect of a person s life, but it can also be the most frightening. When we encounter a location or a person that has been transformed, we are hopeful, but also fearful, to encounter the toll the change has had on them. In the short stories titled The Return and A Marker on the Side of a Boat the protagonists are absent from a location that is significant to them. Upon their returns, they are disappointed to find that change has swept away everything they used to know. Both protagonists in the stories have their hopes destroyed by the reality that everything is different than the way it was before. He s been a friend of the family years, even before I was born. Now retired, he had delivered newborns for over thirty years. I recently asked him what the ratio was between older and younger women giving birth these days. He replied, More older women than you d think... every once in a while, you might see some poor 16 year old girl having a rough time, but usually 20 to 30 year old women with an occasional 40 year old having another kid. That was the answer I was expecting. Children were seen as a cause of women being interpreted as secondary citizens, and that a woman could be her best if she at least chose to have children later in life. As most feminists at this time were white, educated women, feminists seeking encouraged women to become educated, go to college, and/or start a career (Welles Nystrom). A 1982 poll conducted found that 86% of women who gave birth after 28 years of age, were quoted agreeing they wanted it all, and desired to become a career woman and a housewife (Poelker and Baldwin). Though a career or college education may not necessarily be the top priority for all women, today, it usually comes first as financial stability for anyone is obviously important. Who wants to take care of a kid in college anyway? School is hard enough. That s a good two to eight years where a kid is going to get in the way; especially if one doesn t have any other family for support, and starting a career can also be equally as difficult. I wouldn t want a kid either if I was a woman seeking a college education or a career. Having a child later in life gives a woman the option of having a child when she is ready, not the child. • 6. Environmental Concerns And Climate Change Proposed Research Environmental concerns and climate change are influencing and shaping the future of the power industry. As a result, the electricity required to meet the growing demand is mainly generated from renewable energy resources, and this trend is expected to continue in the next decades [1]. Hydro and wind are major renewable energy resources and are free of greenhouse gas emissions [2]. This makes them valuable environmentally sustainable and economic resources for power generation around the world. A hydro wind hybrid power system is an excellent combination for improved reliability, where the resources abound [3]. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there is enormous potential for hydro and wind renewable energy resources, with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This condition imposes unique challenges on the planning and operation of a hydro wind integrated power system in a reliable manner [8]. Previous studies on wind penetration issues and solutions found that the limiting factors of wind integration include penetration level, forecasting reliability, geographic diversity, hydro generation flexibility and control of the overall system [6]. Control is a key enabling factor for the deployment of renewable energy systems [9]. Control techniques such as linear and dynamic programming, genetic algorithms, and neural networks, proposed by past research, for the control and economic dispatch of renewable energy systems, have not been acknowledged to be error free [3]. Two major flaws identified in existing techniques include the lack of ease of use, and adaptability to new situations and evolving regulations [3]. These flaws pose major operational challenges to utilities and thus, make control technologies optimization an imperative research endeavor. In 1998, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Policy 1 Generation Control and Performance Standard (CPS) was enforced to ensure effective frequency control in interconnected power systems. It occurs when the Moon and Sun are lined up on the same side of the Earth so that the moon is not visible from Earth. Next, the waxing crescent moon phase is displayed whereby the Moon s surface is less than half lit up. The word waxing means that the light side of the Moon is moving towards the full moon phase. A person viewing the Moon from the Northern Hemisphere will see a waxing moon if any portion of the left side of the Moon is dark and the right side is illuminated. If the Moon is observed on consecutive nights during the waxing phase, they will notice that the light section of the Moon is actually growing during this phase. The next phase is the first quarter moon, which is often referred to as a half moon because half of the Moon, the right side, is illuminated. The phrase first quarter is not used to describe the shape of the Moon but is used to express that the Moon has completed a quarter of its orbit around the earth. At this point, the Sun and Moon are at a 90 degree angle in relation to the earth. Next in the moon cycle is the waxing gibbous which is characterized by more than half of the Moon being illuminated and the left portion of the Moon displaying a smaller shadow area. Double Muscling Selective breeding Selective breeding is a process where animal and plant breeders select individuals with desirable traits and breed them to produce offspring with these desirable traits, which are determined by desirable alleles in the selected organism s genotype. Double muscling is caused by the recessive mutation of the myostatin gene, and naturally occurs. Competition for power and an increasing need for prosperity lead to Copan s collapse, and ultimately the Classic Maya civilization as a whole. Secondly, the Roman civilization had a number of social disputes, which contributed to its collapse. Among those, political instability emerged as the root cause for its downfall.2 One of the revealing ironies of Rome s history is that the city state s native democracy withered as its empire grew. (Wright, 90). The assassination of Julius Caesar fueled existing conflicts further. Self proclaimed emperors after Caesar s death and the overall political imbalance of the weakening empire lead to war, invasion and trade disruption. These disturbances created a ripple effect that lead to massive amounts of crime, increased cases of disease, and widespread famine. In the The Red Room the author does not only use fear as a means of evolving the story but also places it at the centre of the story. The Signalman uses fear of the supernatural as a means of making the story more believable as done in The Red Room . They seem to add to the atmosphere of fear and the supernatural, they also seem to symbolise the castle itself; they are both mysterious and rather threatening. In a recent experiment/study by ________ (___), it was found that __________________, indicating that that the likelihood of human relationships increased significantly after close contact. ______ participants ranked __________. ________% of ________had lifelong partners or were married to people whom they interacted closely with. • 20. Collapse Of The Minoan Civilization Since the rediscovery of the site of Knossos by Sir Arthur Evans in 1900, the cause of the fall of the Minoan Civilization has been largely debated throughout the years. Scientists and archaeologists have proposed various hypotheses to the mystery, mainly regarding to environmental factors such as the eruption of Thera Volcano and subsequent tsunamis, earthquakes and climate change; or social and political factors like societal conflicts and invasion of the Mycenaeans. This paper examines the relationship between the demise of the Minoan Civilizationand the natural disasters it encountered which severely weakened and eventually led to the downfall of the civilization, and opened the way for Mycenaean domination of Aegean (Middleton, G.D., 2012). The Minoan Civilization was a civilization of the Bronze Age which arose in the island of Crete, Greece and flourished from around 2600 BC to 1100 BC. It is considered to be the first advanced civilization in Europe, where the Minoans formed complex and vibrant societies consisting of warriors, merchants, artists, farmers, sailors, sea traders and all kinds of people. They were also the first to use a written language in Europe, namely Linear A. Despite how intelligent these people were, the Minoan Civilization collapsed at its peak of splendor in 1450 BC, leaving traces of its grandeur and essential clues to their legend. The most popular theory to their collapse is associated with the tremendous eruption of Thera. Although the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Introduction to the Hoover Dam According to the Cobuild Advanced Learning Dictionary, a dam is defined as, A wall that is built across a river in order to stop the water flowing and to make a lake. The Hoover Dam is located in the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada. It was first called the Boulder Dam but was later named the Hoover Dam. It was named after President Herbert Hoover. Hoover was not only president but also an engineer, and when he was Secretary of Commerce (before being President) he urged the construction of the dam. The dam is 726 feet tall and is about 1200 feet wide. The Hoover Dam was starting to be built in March of 1931. According to the official Bureau of Reclamation for the Hoover Dam, ... If the water level falls too low, the dam will no longer be able to generate power. This is causing new workers to make five new wide head turbines that are being designed to be used by 2017. These turbines are made to work with less flow of water. II. How It Was Built There were many steps to building the Hoover Dam. The first step was to blast the canyon walls of the Black Canyon. The blasting of the canyon walls helped make four diversion tunnels to move the constant flow of the Colorado s River water around where the workers were constructing the dam. There were two tunnels made on each side of the canyon. When it was summer the tunnels would be very very hot ( about 140, but in the winter the tunnels would be the exact opposite. When the canyon walls were blasted the extra rock was then used to make a different route for the Colorado River. After blasting the walls and clearing the rock, workers would then clear the walls of the Black Canyon. During the clearing of the walls, the workers carried 44 pound jackhammers to get rid of the unstable rock. Workers hung to heights of 800 feet to do this treacherous ... With the papacy caught in the midst of this turmoil, conflicting ideas of injustice and moral sense drive the message of the film. In connection to the Enlightenment, an era of new philosophical ideas from the 1400s up until the 1600s, Jean Jacques Rousseau s ideas of individuality, human nature and corruption are best represented through the films. As a philosopher in France, Rousseau focused heavily on human nature and what led human beings to change. Those in positions of power had crooked values, only wanting to benefit themselves. Because the government was power hungry and constantly feening for more land and power, they held too much control. Letter From Birmingham Jail By Martin Luther King Jr. After reading Letter from Birmingham Jail , I was in awe by Martin Luther King Jr. s rhetorical skills writing with immense emotion and redefining terms used to criticize him, more specifically extremism. Additionally, the southern clergy challenged Martin Luther King Jr. s ability to lead by questioning whether MLK was teetering along the line of being an extremist; this is due to the fact that the majority Caucasian southern clergy believed racial injustice would be solved without direct action. However, King responded in great detail to the southern clergy expressing his viewpoint on extremism and the best way to solve injustice. When addressing the case of extremism, King stated that he views the subject as people being an extremist for hate or love, injustice or justice. Then he expressed his view on social change with respect to time, stating there is an irrational notion that there is something in the very flow of time that will inevitably cure all ills. Altogether, Martin Luther King Jr. effectively communicates to the southern clergy (the followers/collaborators) his point of view on the misconceptions of how to deal with social change and utilizes the Social Change Model . • 40. Goal Setting Is An Best Way For Students With Track And... Goal setting is an excellent way for students to track and improve upon physical fitness levels. The importance of being able to set goals and to try to achieve them is that each individual student can assess where they are and set goals to improve. Not all students can achieve the same fitness standards. Some students are born with more muscle mass or more fast twitch muscle fibers than other students. Some students have asthma or other physical difficulties that make it difficult to measure up with other students when all students are required to get a certain score on a fitness test to get an A. Using goal setting where all students can be successful by reaching their goals and showing improvement could be a positive influence for future motivation. While problem based learning can help students to learn and use goal setting (Hubball 2006), goal setting may not always help students to achieve greater fitness levels. Hill (2015) found that those students who set goals over an 18 week period did not have any significant improvement over those students that did not set goals on the pacer and push up tests. Similarly, in another study looking at the effects of goal setting on Native elders found only a weak correlation between goal setting and improvement on the amount of steps taken in a day using a pedometer (Sawchuck 2011). The problem with this study was that the researchers set the goals for the participants. It may be more important that students set their own ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In July 1951, after US President Truman fired General MacArthur for insubordination, Truman and his new military commanders started truce negotiations at Panmunjom. Nonetheless, battle continuously ensued across the 38th Parallel as negotiations stalled. Canada s navy played a noteworthy role in defending UN aircraft carriers for the chance to apply political pressure against North Korea. As Canada s eight naval ships defended the UN aircraft, a mass series of bombings took place on 13 hydroelectric generating facilities known as the Attacks on Sui Ho Dam. The UN wanted to make the message clear that they were willing to make this war as difficult and expensive as possible for the communists. The strikes were successful in destroying up to 90% of North Korea s facilities and causing a blackout for 2 weeks; 23% of power was also reduced from Northeast China. Eventually, this political pressure contributed to North Korea to agree and sign armistice. Furthermore, the ships were also responsible for short bombardments and the eradication of North Korean trains and railways. Although the political pressure from the Sui Ho Dam ...
