Mama Ocollo s Portrait Of A Nusta
Though the Peruvian artist remains unknown, the painting Inca Princess (Mama Ocollo) bares an
uncanny resemblance to Portrait of a Nusta by Museo Inka. The image illustrates a woman, the royal
princess, cloaked in detailed Inca clothing with many intricate squares sewn on displaying her level of
nobility and power. She is holding an Incan man s decapitated head with blood still trickling
downward. To the right stands a male dwarf servant waiting on said woman. Lastly, to the left side of
the painting shows an intricate and large headpiece. It is a known fact that only most powerful and
royal can acquire such item of clothing. While the princess externally represents what it looks like to
be Inca, a conflict of identity lies underneath. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Colonization produces conflicting identities because it is an act in overwhelming one culture with
another. Once a new group has exerted their power and control in a new land, their specific elements
of life begins to spread throughout and eventually into the lives of the indigenous. For example, when
the Spanish established their rule in Peru, slowly but surely, the native Andeans began to assimilate
into their lifestyle. They incorporated Spanish culture into their daily lives such as utilising the color
purple for their traditional uncus. Purple is a color that represents royalty in Europe. The influence of
European ideology, such as Christianity, also played a large role in many Andean lives for example the
Inca Princess depicted in this painting. Because the indigenous were constantly surrounded by the new
Spanish culture, their identities reflected that. They were no longer purely Andean but humans with
integrated cultures and values. In Conflict and Order, D. Stanley Eitzen writes culture is learned [...] it
is not instinctive or innate in the human species [...] when a person joins a new social organization,
she or he must learn the culture of that group . With no sign of the Spanish conquest departing anytime
soon from Peru, the indigenous learns the culture of the new people whom they must share their land
and lives with. They do this, not because their minds are more susceptible to allowing new ideas shape
their identities, but because they are smart. Eitzen goes on to write when we learn the culture of a
society [...] we know the rules, what is appropriate and inappropriate, what is moral and immoral, and
what is beautiful and what is ugly . The Spanish had control over the Andeans, that is a fact. With
control comes power and thus comes consequences if that power is rebelled against. By letting
Spanish culture into their lives, the

The History Of Pizza By Matt Lezotte
The History of Pizza By Matt Lezotte
Pepperoni? Sausage? Olive? It seems like everyone likes pizza whether its one way or another. Pizza
has become the most common favorite food among Americans and you can see it s popularity all over
the world. People crave it so much that now you don t need to leave your home to get a slice of pie.
Even in Italy pizza vending machines are starting to appear. Every second about 300 pizza slices are
about to be eaten. The trend has no end in sight and with chains like pizza hut finding ways to reinvent
the pizza people will likely keep buying those delicious slices of joy. But where did pizza begin?
Many know it started in Italy but most just assume it has been around forever. The early ideas of pizza
didn t even come to be since the 1700 s. Pizza started in Naples. Soon immigrants lead to the first
sightings of pizza in America. Then New York wanted to make pizza easy and inexpensive. Chicago
reinvented it so one could eat with a fork and knife. Pizza keeps evolving and growing and it is truly
one of the best inventions ever to exist. But it started as something only a poor man would eat. The
origins of pizza trace back to around the late 1700 s. People ate flat bread with cheese on it and
sometimes a sauce was added. This was mildly popular but often the flatbread would contain fancy
oils and herbs with fine cheese on top. Many higher ranked Italiens would eat flatbread but with oils
and herbs on top to make it taste

Essay on What Started the Zombie Craze and What Kept Them...
12th Composition 11°
16 December, 2009
What started the zombie craze and what kept them alive ? AHHHHhhhhhh........! Imagine being
awakened by a soft, distance scream. Wide awake, the world returns to being silent except for a racing
heartbeat. Suddenly, a soft resonating moan starts to fill the empty air of the bedroom. Looking out the
window, the world is an eerie grey with nothing moving but the occasional garbage blowing in the
wind. Suddenly the horizon begins to change as a crowd of people begin to emerge. Watching
nervously, the figures get closer and turn into something much more menacing. They are all disease
invested, flesh rotted, brain hungry zombies! Where did these undead monsters come from? How do
they survive? What ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Night of the Living Dead gave the world its first zombie and since then the zombie has not stopped
thirsting for human brains. Today, the new movie Zombieland has just been released into theaters so
the zombie is still going strongly through culture. Night of the Living Dead was a serious horror look
at zombies but society has turned a once terrifying genre into some humor. Spoofs like Shawn of the
Dead and Zombieland has fun messing around with the rules of the post apocalyptic zombie movie
genre (Machosky). However the reason the undead have survived so long is because they have
broadened their publicity range. Not only does the world see zombies in movies, but mankind must
watch out for Nazi zombies rising from the grave in videos games like Dead Snow and Call of Duty:
World at War (Greene). Zombies have been expanded into music as well with the Kingston Trio s
release of the song Zombie Jamboree . Even books have been used to spread the disease, such as at
Borders zombie literature runs the gambit from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Zombie Haiku
(Greene). In addition, David Lubar has just recently expanded the zombie craze to elementary school
children with his newest novel, My Rotten Life (Lauer Williams). This is a children s book about a
middle school student who is also a zombie. Zombies, once a scary menace only for the brave at heart,
have become a friendlier topic for everyone. However, for some people, zombies are still a very

Western Influence on Kuwait
Kuwait and Western influence Over the past decades, Kuwait, like most Islamic countries have
practiced strict measures in terms of their governance system with lots of times the religious aspect
influencing greatly the kind of government in place and the type of governance that is used within
Kuwait. This resulted in a closed, less democratic, religious, stereotypical and generally patriarchal
society. This has however undergone a lot of change particularly with the embracing of the Western
culture that is more open, diverse and liberal in nature. Positives of western culture interaction More
democratic space Western culture has had far reaching effects on many aspects of lives of the Kuwaiti
in the sense that people have become more open minded and the society has turned from suppressing
the women, both domestically and socially, to embracing them and liberating them to make choices
and participate in social events like men do. Ladies currently enjoy a lot of freedom with regard to
what they put on and how they express themselves. Kuwaitis have also adopted modern pop culture
something that was unheard of in the past. They have developed a sense of taste for whatever they
buy, whatever they listen to, what they eat, watch, what they do on their bodies, hair and teeth. It is
paradoxical that when Kuwait gained her independence from the United Kingdom in 1961, her
citizens proclaimed liberation, when in actual sense there was none of it. Women in particular had to

Imagery And Symbolism In The Sick Rose By William Blake
The Sick Rose by William Blake Twisted nursery rhyme through imagery and symbolism
In this essay will be discussed how imagery and symbolism, used within the poem The Sick Rose by
William Blake, contributes to the themes of the poem which is love, sexuality, violence and mortality.
Firstly, all the themes will be discussed in detail to their meaning within this nursery style type of
poem. Secondly, poetic devices such as apostrophe, personification and diction will be discussed to
explain how these devices contribute to the imagery in the poem. Thirdly, symbolism and the type of
symbolism used within the poem will be critically discussed in the context of the poem and the era in
which the poem was written in. This will help better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to the nature of the poem s content it can be said that the worm is a dark entity that does its work
at night (line 3) when it is mostly invisible to others (line 2). The fact that the speaker calls the worm
invisible could also mean that the worm has hidden intentions and dark secrets. In one opinion the
poems themes can be linked if you think about the content in a critical matter. The rose is being
infected by a worm which might as well be a person that forces his love upon the rose . This person
might as well be a rapist and he can [fly] in the night...in the howling storm (line 3 4). Rape and sexual
actions mostly take place at night time which explains line three. Eventually the aggressor or rapist
finds the roses bed of crimson joy (line7 8) which is most likely the bed of passion/ pleasure seeing as
red is a passionate colour referring to romance and love. The aggressor or rapist shares his dark secret
love which could be rape that eventually kills the rose/ victim. Therefore, the theme of violence is
relevant because rape and/ or murder are acts of violence, the theme of sex is relevant because that is
what most rapist are interested in and the theme of love is relevant because even though this it is a
twisted view, the love depicted by the worm (line 2) is indeed a type of

A long time ago, during the reign of king Herod, there was a priest named Zechariah. His wife named
Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous in God s eyes, obeying all the lord s commands. They had no
children because Elizabeth couldn t conceive, they were both very old.
Once when Zachariah was on duty he was chosen by lot to go into the temple and burn incense. When
the time came all the worshipers were praying outside.
Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him. When Zechariah saw him he was startled, The angel said
Don t be afraid, your prayer has been heard. Your wife shall have a child, his name shall be John. He

Johns clothes were made of camel s hair and a leather belt. It sounds kind of gross that he ate locusts
but that s just what he had to eat. Wild honey from bees nests sounds pretty sweet and sugary. This is
all the bible tells us about what John looked like. He certainly looked much different than us today.
John The Baptists Work
In Luke 1: 16,17 the angel of the Lord says that John will bring the Israelites back to their God, he will
go before God in the spirit of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the
disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous. This will make ready a people prepared for the Lord. So
this shows what John work was. It was to get the people ready for the Lord. He did this by many ways
like baptism. He even baptized Jesus. This is the work that John was called to do.
Old Testament Prophecy
In the old testament Isaiah speaks about John, and how he will prepare the way for the Lord. He will
show the glory of the Lord, and all the people will see it. So does this mean that John is going to make
a difference? Certainly yes, it says that their faithfulness will be like the flowers of the field. John was
the right man for the Job, and he was going to succeed in preparing the way of the

Urban Segregation And Its Effects On Residential...
The authors introduce the topic of inherited residential segregation patterns (Leetmaa) among ethnic
groups in post communist Tartu, Estonia within the context of immigration policies implemented
during the Soviet communist era. Using two dimensions preferences and segregation ethnicity and
neighbor affluence (Leetmaa ,163), the study explores the possible causes of residential segregation in
post Soviet Tartu and its effects on residential preferences shaped by liberal market forces and national
identity. The research is presented through an urban sociological geographical perspective, citing
recent studies in the US and Western Europe that suggest that urban neighborhoods are increasingly
experiencing high levels of residential segregation along the line of race and ethnicity (Leetmaa 163).
By comparison, the Tartu model is unique because it has not experienced any new immigration since
1991 (Leetmaa 163) compared to the rest of its European counterparts in the EU. Thus the pattern of
segregation in Tartu reflects two major ethno linguistic groups that experienced preferential housing
status under two different political and economic systems that are now inversed. During the Soviet
period, Russian minority migrants enjoyed better housing choices under the central planning model.
Today, the majority Estonian population enjoys a higher standard of living that allows for greater
mobility and better housing choices in a free market economy. Next, the authors

The Bermuda Triangle Theory
Mysteries and theories behind the Bermuda Triangle
While researching different websites and resources about the Bermuda Triangle, I came across many
different theories and explanations about the Bermuda Triangle. The Bermuda Triangle, also known as
the Devil s Triangle, is a section in the Atlantic Ocean between Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico
where ships and planes have disappeared with no trace of them. The Bermuda Triangle covers about
500,000 square miles of ocean, which is a very popular shipping lane where ships travel through. In
this essay theories and disappearances will be explained, giving a brief but thorough explanation of
each topic. My goal in this essay is to provide
These disappearances go all the way back to Christopher Columbus, stating that Columbus and his

Why should we as Americans become good at it? Why should we focus on our personal value add?
The touchy feely service stuff is the more intimate type of service and relationships you have or offer
your client on a more personal level rather than have it be professional all the time. We as Americans,
should be relatively good at this because as the book states anything that can be digitized can be
outsourced to either the smartest or the cheapest producer, or both. Meaning the more technical work
can be taken over to for instance, India, where someone will do that work for you, which gives you
more freedom to connect with your clients. We should focus on our value add because that is what you
as an individual bring to your company. 5. How are the journalism and fast food industries becoming
flat? Journalism and fast food industries are becoming more flat because they were two of the few jobs
that didn t need outsourcing help or hadn t been modified to include outsourcing, until now. With
journalism you have stuff going on like the Reuters operation. Work gets done where it can be done
most effectively and efficiently. These types of professions are slowly changing to be more likely to
start allowing outsource work, which ultimately gives the American workers more free time for

Poetry Analysis – Whoso List to Hunt
Poetry Analysis Whoso List To Hunt
Whoso List To Hunt is a Petrarchan sonnet by Thomas Wyatt, which is known as an Italian sonnet,
consisting of an octave and a sestet. This sonnet revolves around the themes of unrequited love,
sexism, complexity, obsession and passion. Wyatt uses a collection of poetic techniques within the
sonnet in order to display the power and desire the man has for the woman.
The structure of this sonnet corresponds to a Petrarchan sonnet. This is identified by the rhyming
scheme abba abba cde cde . The sonnet is constructed by an octave, which are two quatrains combined
then a sestet following after that.
Whoso List To Hunt was based in the English Renaissance period during the late 15th century to the ...

The poet in lines 5 6 cannot take his fatigued mind off the deer as she continues to flee. my wearied
mind Draw from the deer, but as she fleeth afore, . These lines signify his obsession of possessing his
prey. The use of the poetic term consonance , repetitions of non vowel sounds, in line 6, Draw from
the deer expresses the reoccurring longing desire and passion for the deer (woman). Another instance
in which consonances are used, as she fleeth afore, Fainting I follow. I leave off therefore . In this line
there is an unremitting repetition of the letter F which gives a great indication that the hunter is out of
breath and exhausted. When she flees, it quotes, fainting I follow . He can only barely catch up to the
wind that follows behind her, so he realises here that the chase is futile. He apprehends the fact that
the deer is not welcoming his affection, which refers back to the theme of unrequited love . Wyatt in
addition introduces a second metaphor , wind in which he uses to describe the woman. The wind
symbolises agility, freedom and is impossible to capture. The first octave makes out that this was all a
wasted hunt, and that the poet is officially unsuccessful.
In the closing sestet, the hunter addresses the other suitors who are determined to capture her that they
have absolutely no chance and warns them that they ll suffer deep consequences if

Analysis Of J. Crew s Website
J. Crew Ease or difficulty of shopping: J. Crew s website allowed for easy shopping. The home page
offered several ways to shop. You had the option of choosing a specific category such as women s
pants, you could browse through the wear to work collection they have put together, or you could have
used the search bar that was provided to search for a specific item. Locating desired merchandise: I
found that locating the desired merchandise, khaki pants, was a little difficult. Once I navigated to the
women s pants section I found that J. Crew had broken up the pants into the way they fit. I had no way
to refine my search on this page. However, when I typed exactly what merchandise I was looking for
in the search bar on the home page I was able to find the khaki pants quickly. Also, when I used the
search bar I was able to refine my search with tabs reading women, men, girl, or boys. Merchandise
and assortments: I found that J. Crew did not have a large assortment of women s pants. After finding
my desired merchandise, I saw that they offered only three types of khaki pants. What has J. Crew
done to exploit the synergies between different channels? J.Crew has several ways to shop with their
retail stores, online store, catalogs, and direct mail. They have done a few things to exploit the
synergies between these different channels. One noticeable strategy that J. Crew uses is offering deals
that can be used only online and giving students and teachers in store discounts

Importance and Significance of Calgary Urban Sustainable...
Running Head: Calgary Urban Sustainable Development
Introduction
The concept of urban sustainable development emerged in the twentieth century. Development is
defined as the way of bringing change in communities by promoting economic growth and
development, changing infrastructure and utilizing technology to create stronger and advanced
communities. However, this development can have negative impact on society and may lead to
exploitation of natural resources, deforestation, outdoor pollution, gender inequalities and social
injustice (Bartelmus, 2011). Therefore, the concept of sustainable development has emerged as a new
paradigm of development, which concentrates on protecting the environment and preserving of
resources and removing social inequalities and at the same time, promoting economic growth and
development. Calgary s urban sustainable development model has been selected and would be
discussed in the lights of broad and diverse academic resources.
Importance and Significance of Sustainable Development
Definition
Sustainable Development is a term, which is defined as the development that caters sustainability of
the present environment in order to meet its needs and at the same time, ensures that the present
development would not in any way harm the future environment for the future generations (Bartelmus,
2011). In the year 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development published a report
that concentrated on dealing with the issues related to

The History Of Dmd Stemmed From The Progressive Muscular...
The coexistence of the uncommon disease known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy or DMD, has
come to the attention of many and has manifested within this document to generalize the history,
impact, and significance of the disease. The history of DMD stemmed from the progressive muscular
dystrophy of two 10 year old boys names Conte and Gonji in 1836. Since this becoming the first
historical account of such a disease, many doctors and specialists speculated a more catastrophic form
of tuberculosis; when revisited by scientists it was concluded that they suffered from the milder
Becker MD. In 1852, Meryon reported in striking points of interest a family with four young men,
every one of whom were influenced by huge muscle changes, however had no ... Show more content

As shown in Figure 1, this presents the most common scenario that is passed down to children since
most people with the disease do not have a long enough life expectancy, and most females who get
both affected X chromosomes by a carrier mother and affected father is very unlikely. The chart
explains how the males who receive the disease get it from a carrier mother who is unaffected by the
disease as the one affected X chromosome is masked by unaffected X chromosome; a task that the Y
chromosome cannot achieve, thus making the male population inclined to receive it more likely than
females. Figure 1 illustrates a more detailed Punnett Square depicts the common scenario. Duchenne
Muscular Dystrophy is caused by a mutation of the dystrophin gene at locus Xp21, located on the
short arm of the X chromosome. The DMD disease occurs primarily from frameshift mutations in the
dystrophin gene. Just short of 70% of cases of DMD occur from deletion of the dystrophin gene, 10%
of cases occur from the harmful addition of the gene. The remaining cases (that have medically been
recorded), have occurred because of disastrous point mutations that change in the DNA sequence.
Dystrophin is a pole molded cytoplasmic protein and an indispensable part of a protein complex that
associates the cytoskeleton of a muscle fiber to the encompassing extracellular grid through

Biography Of Cosimo De Medici
Cosimo de Medici was born on September 27, 1389 in Florence, Italy at the time his family was

Cosimo traditionally has been accused of destroying Florentine liberties, these ancient liberties are

taken by surprise like the Albizzi, he perfected the system by not changing in the law s actual
administration, but in the spirit of law he changed everything, it was a rule to fill high official

making an exceptional procedure the rule by dictatorial powers were now granted for a fixed term that

The Effects of the One-Child Policy in China Essay example
Would it be fair for the Government to control how many children you have? Is it fair for them to kill
your unborn children? Since 1949 under the rule of Mao Zedong, the communist Chinese government
had enforced policies that control families and couples in China. The Government has forced the
people to have more children at one point and less at another. The One Child policy in China limits
Chinese couples to one child each. The three exceptions to the policy are: Minority ethnic groups,
urban single child residents, and the policy only enforced on the Han Chinese. The one child policy
was a bad idea for China for three reasons: punishments (inequality), unfair treatment of women, and
china s fertility rate was already decreasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

culturally preferable, the practice of female infanticide was resumed in some areas shortly after the
one child policy took effect. (Document E) I hate to say it but the one child policy should party be
blamed for some social issues in youth today. She wished she has a brother or sister to share all the
attention. (Document F) This evidence supports the claim that the one child policy was a bad policy
because women have always been culturally no preferable, causing unborn females to be aborted.
The final reason that the one child policy was a bad idea is because of the fact that China s fertility
rate was already decreasing and was one of the lowest rates compared to Brazil, South Korea, and
Thailand in 1979 making the policy pointless and unnecessary. The claim by the Chinese officials that
the one child policy has helped avert over 400 million births simply cannot be substantiated by

Amber Alert Began in 1996 when Dallas Fort Worth broadcasters teamed with local police to develop
an early warning system to help find abducted children (AmberAlert.gov). AMBER stands for
America s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response (AmberAlert.gov). The program is used in all 50
states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (Missing Kids.org). When
you notify the police saying that your child has been abducted they would have to make sure it follows
the amber alert criteria. AMBER plans require law enforcement to confirm an abduction prior to
issuing an alert. This is essential when determining the level of risk to the child. Clearly, stranger
abductions are the most dangerous for children and thus are primary to the mission of an AMBER
Alert. To allow activations in the absence of significant information that an abduction has occurred

The Conflict Between The United States And Other Countries...
Both Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting for the same geographical territory for some time.
Arguments presented by both groups are reasonable as to why the area belongs to them considering
they both have historical and religious foundations in the region. The question that arises from these
claims is which group is right, and what appropriate measures should be taken to resolve the conflict
between the groups. For problems such as this, the U.S foreign secretary is called upon to conduct
negotiations that relate to U.S. foreign affairs, and to promote beneficial economic intercourse
between the United States and other countries. While both Israelis and Palestine s believe they are
right in their argument for territory. Both groups need to be more committed in establishing peace in
their region, resolving their differences so they can partake in a better quality of life. It is important to
understand the underlying beliefs of both groups, in order to gain an understanding of what caused the
conflict between them, and whether there can be a resolution. The State of Israel consists of two
nationalities which are Jews and Palestinians. The Palestinians are an ethnic group made up of modern
descendants of the people who have lived in Palestine over the centuries, and who today are largely
culturally and linguistically considered Arab. The people of Israel (also referred to as the Jewish

Symbolism In The Scarlet Letter
Without any prior knowledge to the meaning or label of a scarlet letter , readers can assume it has a
dark connotation. Scarlet, being a dark red color, more specially the color of blood, represents to
readers that within the pages will be a dark and intense story. Upon reading the novel in its entirety,
the scarlet letter itself becomes the most significant and important use of symbolism in the novel. It
transforms from a simple A into a metaphor for the mortification of committing a sin. Initially
standing for adultery , its meaning transforms many times throughout the book. In being used as both
and label and an idea, Hawthorne again shows his skill in making complexity seem effortless. He
constantly plays with the idea of supernatural against the literal which is mainly showcased in the
mutability of the scarlet letter. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In marking his flesh with the symbol of shame, Dimmesdale attempts to free himself of his sin. The
letter turns a literal shade of scarlet as the blood stained A is shown as carved into his chest to the
townspeople. He admits to the community that I stand upon the spot where, seven years since, I
should have stood (Hawthorne, 350) to admit fault. Dimmesdale knows that he too should ve been
forced to wear the letter everyday, and as a result leaves a permeant scar on his body in attempt to
make up for it. Here, the label symbolizing mortification enables readers to see Hester s strength over
Dimmesdale s cowardliness. Especially as a women during this time and setting, her ability to
embrace this punishment shows extreme bravery and toughness, much more than her male counterpart

Tuberculosis And The World Health Organization
Every 25 seconds a person dies from tuberculosis. This equates to approximately 1.3 million people
every year (Global Alliance for TB Drug Development, 2014). Tuberculosis, or more commonly
known as TB, is more prominent in developing countries with 80% of Asian and African countries
testing positive for tuberculosis (Abbas AK, 2007). India currently has the most cases of TB in the
world (World Health Organization, 2009). There are a few types of TB such as common, partial drug
resistant and drug resistant. The disease that will be focused on today is common tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis is as old as mankind. It was first officially recognised by Hippocrates who described the
symptoms of the disease as coughing up blood and weight loss that eventually led to death. In the 16th
century a theory was proposed that the disease was transmitted via microorganisms. This was not
proven until 1882. In the 1880 s, the chosen way of curing tuberculosis was for the patients to receive
clear air, a balanced diet and plenty of rest. This was used not only to treat the patients but to also
isolate them. During the 19th century, the spread of the disease slowed as living conditions and
hygiene improved. In the 20th century a vaccination was developed as well as antibiotics. This
resulted in the disease declining dramatically. It wasn t until the 1980 s that the disease reappeared
again due to the aids epidemic. Due to the aids sufferers having a weaker immune system, they were

Identity Development
When people want to figure out their identity, they ll have to change their perspective, on how they
think people view them. Doing this, you ll slowly engage deeper into self consciousness. George

things that work together as a person goes through the stages, in George Herbert Mead s theory are,

Barn Burning Analysis
In Barn Burning by William Faulkner, the main focus is on the Snopes family. Sarty Snopes is a ten
year old boy, who has to deal with his demeaning father, Abner who has recently been convicted of
arson, so the family is forced to move out of town. Because of this conviction, Sarty is put in a very
uncomfortable situation where he might have to testify against his father, which causes several
conflicts within the story. Faulkner uses Sarty to portray that not every child grows up with ideal
parents that genuinely care for he or she. Faulkner exemplifies this truth through pathos, symbolism,
theme, and diction. Will Sarty be courageous and fight against his father or will he join his father and
become a coward, like him? Faulkner exemplifies the hardships of some children through Sarty by
appealing to the reader s pathos. By definition, pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of
convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response (YourDictionary). Sarty
explains his feelings by saying, Maybe he will feel it too. Maybe it will even change him now from
what maybe he couldn t help but be (Vidal, et. al). The reader can almost feel the sympathy pouring
out of this little child s voice, which automatically makes the reader feel sorry for him. Sarty is
hopeful that since his father has to pay for the rug that he ruined, then maybe he will feel resentment
and realize what he has done wrong. He wants his father to change his ways, but he

When looking at captivity narratives there is many different characteristics that can show if the
document is reliable outside of any bias the author brought or that was inherent in the culture of that
period. Defining a captivity narrative is a difficult job for many reasons. The chief reason is that since
there are so many written concerning Indian captivity, it becomes necessary to have a category list or a

maybe, that will make this dark complexion lighter. Neither scenario works. Darker skins find
themselves in a battle they cannot change. In the past, the black community was not accepted in

Figurative Language In The Scarlet Ibis
It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in
the bleeding tree (James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis ). This line of figurative language from Hurst s short
story shows the setting and how summer is gone, but autumn has not started yet. In literature, authors
use figurative language to emphasize setting or to add to characterization. In The Scarlet Ibis , Doodle
is a six year old disabled boy who is unable to walk. Brother , the narrator, works hard to get Doodle
to be able to things that normal kids do, but the pride he has for himself does not want to deal with the
embarrassment of having a disabled brother. In The Scarlet Ibis author James Hurst uses figurative
language to establish the theme of how pride can blind oneself from the things that really matter.
The metaphors used in the short story reveal to the reader the insecurity the brother has within
himself. The brother works hard with Doodle to try to get him to walk, and once they succeed he feels
great confidence in himself. Doodle struggles to move great distances, so getting him to walk further
develops the brother pride. After he succeeds in getting Doodle to walk, he learns something new
about his relationship with Doodle as well as learning that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed
that bears two vines, life and death (5). The pride Brother has for himself causes him to push Doodle
to work harder to achieve the goal of walking. He tells himself he is doing this for Doodle, that he
wants Doodle to feel good about himself. However, the brother wants to feel good about himself by
developing a non disabled brother. While Doodle does start to walk, the reader sees how the brother
disregards Doodles feelings in the process. Like seeds, which are the start of any vegetable, plant or
flower, pride is the start of a life, or a vine, that can lead to one of two outcomes, one that leads to a
more self confident life, and another that causes pain and suffering in others. Through the use of
metaphors the author reveals the narrator s own insecurity and how it causes him to make decisions
for the wrong reasons.
Furthermore, Hurst s use of personification also adds to the theme, by revealing

Hypothese of Kaibab Plateau in the Grand Canyon Essay
Many will attest to the grandeur of the natural feature that exists in northern Arizona, but the
formation of the Grand Canyon has befuddled geomorphologists to this day. This confusion can be
attributed to the Kaibab Plateau, an anomaly considering the Colorado River traverses it seamlessly.
Four prevalent hypotheses have been proposed since the 19th century, starting with the lake overflow
proposition first brought up by John Newbury and then reinforced by Eliot Blackwelder. Newbury
argued that a structure must have ponded an ancient lake causing an overspill to cut into the Grand

Antecedent supporters will claim that the river could flow anywhere on the Kaibab Plateau, but
evidence of a river that strayed has not been found. In addition, the canyons of the Mogollon
Highlands show evidence of ancient rivers that once flowed northeast against the southwest direction
of the Colorado River the Antecedent proposition purports (3c). Gravel sediment where the Mogollon
Highland s would have drained onto the Colorado Plateau supports this statement (3b). A true
testament to the power of the Colorado River from the Rocky Mountains is evident in its capabilities
to erode away volcanic bedrock in the past (5c). As many as 13 volcanic dams were formed in the
Grand Canyon s past, but all did not withstand the Colorado River. Basaltic lava flows are relatively
resistance, but the river has successfully eroded about 11,300 feet of volcanic material, equivalent to
twice the depth of the Grand Canton itself (8b). Further proof of major rivers ability to effectively
erode barriers can be found near Cameron, where the Little Colorado River has managed to change its
course north and remove 150 feet of bedrock material (5c). With these factors in hand it is not hard to
imagine that younger Colorado River had the capability to erode significant parts of an older Kaibab
Plateau. Tributaries like the Bright Angel Canyon also present

For example, a fiduciary relationship exist between two parties, when a party expects the other to act
for him in such a manner as he would act in absolute honesty, faithfulness and diligence, not minding
the fact that he is acting for someone else. If he cannot steal his personal money, then he cannot steal
the money put in his care. Common law provides quite a number of duties of a director to a company,
however, only few of them relates with insider dealings. Some of these duties include:
The duty to act bonafide in the Company s interest.
A director is expected to act honestly, diligently and faithfully in the best interest of the comp any.
This duty is however relative. What happens to be in the best interest of the company to a director may
differ from the shareholders view. In the case of Park v. Daily Times Ltd., the court held that the
directors had acted improperly and not bonafide for the company s interest, when they made
redundancy payments to the company s employees on the cessation of the company s business. Duty
to avoid conflict of Interest.
In the performance of his duties, a director must not allow a conflict of interest between him and the
company. To be strictly avoided are instances in which a director s personal interest would conflict
with the interest of the company, which he is expected to protect. This was the situation in Industrial

Monica Geller said the first line of the situation comedy, Friends, which was, There s nothing to tell. It
s just some guy I work with. This line sets up the sitcom with some romance, but also with some
comedy. Just as one would expect, Joey Tribbiani continues the plot by adding humor saying, Come
on! You re going out with the guy. There s got to be something wrong with him. Chandler Bing
continues to add comedy by saying, All right Joey, be nice. So does he have a hump, a hump and a
hair piece? Then, with concern in her voice, Phoebe Buffay asks, Wait, does he eat chalk? Because I

The group of friends encounter many difficulties when trying to be successful in the city, and go
through numerous awkward situations too. The plot of the sitcom Friends is one of the main reasons
that the sitcom lasted a long time. An article titled 5 Generic TV Sitcom Plots That Will Never Die
claimed that the five generic TV sitcom plots that will never die are working together, when friends
and relatives become involved, pregnancy problems, annoying friends, and when the one that got
away returns ( 5 Generic TV 1). Friends includes every single one of these situations. The friends
Phoebe and Monica work together in a restaurant. This causes problems for Monica because Phoebe
slows the cooking process down. Monica eventually has to figure out a way to fire Phoebe which
causes tension throughout the sitcom. Tension also arose between Chandler and Joey when Joey found
out that Chandler had kissed on of his sisters. Even more tension came about when Joey discovered
that Chandler did not even know the name of the sister he kissed. Another awkward situation included
in the sitcom is when Ross and Rachel face pregnancy problems. When Rachel and Ross had a fling,
Rachel became pregnant. They had been in a relationship before, but found out that their combination
could never work. Because the two were

What Does Plantinga s Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism Say?
Plantinga s argument against naturalism is very engaging. He begins to state that a lot of people
believing Darwin s theory of evolution have misguided beliefs about naturalism. Comprehensively, he
argues that the contingency of humans having stable cognitive faculties is extremely inferior.
Plantinga cites C.S. Lewis in recognizing that evolutionary naturalism leads us to distrust. He brought
up that even Darwin had doubts along those lines. The essence of reasoning in Plantinga s argument is
that the reliability of evolutionary naturalism is very low. He says the people who believe the two,
evolution and naturalism, go hand in hand should reevaluate its soundness; and hence, withhold
approval from all other beliefs including evolutionary naturalism, said to be self defeating (316). ...

Mystery and Suspense in Gothic Novels
Gothic literature began and was very strong at the time of the Romantic Writers Movement. Gothic
novels share common characteristics that contribute to the overall feeling of the novel. Most Gothic
novels involve a setting that typically added mystery and suspense. The novel usually took place in a
castle like structure that was dark, scary, and isolated (Examine). In addition, the story enveloped
omens or visions, supernatural or inexplicable events, overwrought emotion, women in distress, and a
tyrannical male (Elements). Both Charlotte and Emily Bronte wrote gothic novels that used many of
these characteristics, but their novels also transcended the boundaries of the genre. The novels
Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre follow the gothic tradition in regards to setting, atmosphere, and
supernatural events. However, both novels break from tradition in the matters of feminism and
heroines. Both novels were influenced by gothic tradition because each novel incorporates
characteristics specific to the gothic novels. The majority of Wuthering Heights takes place in the
castle like home of Wuthering Heights. It is damp, dark, and creepy which contributes to the overall
gothic atmosphere of the novel. Just like Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre s two main settings are
Lowood School and Thornfield Hall; both of these places are described as dark, damp, cold, and
mysterious. These traditional gothic settings in both novels force the reader to imagine and feel the
gothic atmosphere.

How Different Chemicals Affect Surface Tension
The aim of my experiment was to figure out how different chemicals affect surface tension. I chose
this experiment because I have always wondered how a drop of water stays together as it falls through
the air. My independent variable was the different chemicals used. My dependant variable was which
liquid stayed on the penny best. The control in this experiment was pure water. My hypothesis was; if
water mixed with salt and water mixed with detergent is tested, then detergent will cause the surface
tension to weaken the most. By definition, Surface tension is the property of the surface of a liquid
that allows it to resist an external force, due to the cohesive nature of its molecules (USGS).
Molecules in a drop of water cling to each other. This is why they can stay together as they fall
through the air (Wick 9). In addition, water molecules at the surface of a liquid form stronger bonds
(USGS). This is because they have no adjacent molecules on top of them so they exert more powerful
forces to molecules on and below the surface of a liquid (USGS). For example, water striders can
glide on the surface of water because their mass is not strong enough to break the surface tension
(USGS). The dependent variable in this experiment was, which liquid stayed on the penny best. The
independent variable was the different chemicals used.
Water droplets form spheres because they are pulled by the cohesive forces of the surface layer
(USGS). A drop of water in its smallest size is a

Analysis of Slaughterhouse-Five, a Novel Written by Kurt...
Slaughterhouse Five, a novel written by Kurt Vonnegut, tells the story of the devastating effects of war
on a man, Billy Pilgrim, who joins the army fight in World War II. The semi autobiographical novel
sheds light on one of history s most tragic, yet rarely spoken of events, the 1945 fire bombing of
Dresden, Germany. Kurt Vonnegut was born in 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana to German parents. As a
young man, Vonnegut wrote articles strongly opposing war for his high school newspaper, and the
school newspaper of Cornell University, where he attended college (Allen 1). World War II broke out
when he was just 16 years old, and at the age of 20, Vonnegut joined the US army. Speaking about his
disdain for war, Novels for Students discloses, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1952, his very first novel, Player Piano was published. Over the next 17 years, Vonnegut published
5 more novels, including Slaughterhouse Five in 1969. This was the book that launched his fame, and
a film adaptation of the book soon followed in 1969, which was successful and only increased his
popularity further. He went on to write 9 more novels before his death in 2007. The anti war story of
Slaughterhouse Five centers on an awkward Billy Pilgrim, a man who travels through time and has
had extraordinary experiences on the planet Tralfamadore with its inhabitants, the Tralfamadorians.
Pilgrim, like Vonnegut, fought in World War II and was still relatively new to the war when he was
taken as prisoner by German soldiers. He too was held in a slaughterhouse underground, which led to
his survival of the 1945 Dresden Firebombing, and was also held behind to gather and burn the
remains of the dead. Pilgrim claims that on his daughter s wedding night, he was first abducted by the
Tralfamadorians, the aliens that inhabited the planet Tralfamadore. These aliens have a fourth
dimension; time. The Tralfamadorians view time as a literal timeline; everything is predetermined, and
they can access any point of time at their will. Pilgrim returns to earth and believes that it is his duty to
make humans aware of this philosophy, and to spread the Tralfamadorians message. By the end of the
book, the reader comes to find that the time shifting and extraterrestrial experiences

What Is Brasil s Influence On South American Culture
South America, has strong latin roots, also are known for their beautiful mountains, rainforests,

Bell Jar Sylvia Plath Essay
Sylvia Plath was an English poet and short story writer born in 1900s. She was best known for her
novel, The Bell Jar, and poems such as Daddy. Plath s life, including her poetry, her sanity and her
marriage was a cycle of ups and downs. After her death in 1963, Plath s life was depicted in the 2003
film Sylvia, starring Gwyneth Paltrow. By just reading Sylvia Plath s works of writing, it is apparent
that she had an infatuation with portraying negative and brutal thoughts. For example, her poem
Daddy, she clearly expresses her rage towards her deceased father. The poem is full of contradiction
and the interpretation is up the reader. Pieces like this gives insight into Sylvia s mental sanity, which
was questioned at times. In her early ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Plath met her lover, fellow poet, Ted Hughes, in 1965 in Cambridge while she was attending the
university. As shown in the film adaptation of her life, their relationship can be described as love at
first site. From the moment they locked eyes at the party they both attended, they felt the intense
connection. Only moments later in the night, while Plath and Hughes were dancing together, Sylvia
had already declared her love for Ted. The couple married in 1956 but their love wasn t always in the
highest place as it was the night they met; their relationship with a turbulent one. Two children later,
the couple still hadn t met a common ground and their relationship was falling apart. After the birth of
their second child in 1962, Hughes left Plath for another woman, which led her to fall deeper into
depression. Soon after, she committed suicide by inhaling gas from a kitchen oven. Plath s tragic death
at just 30 years old, led to Hughes releasing her collection of poems, Ariel, which is one of her
greatest works to this day.
Sylvia Plath s life was one of a troubled woman. Her lack of sanity was deeply reflected in her works
of writing. Her mental state was very much affected by her life experiences such as her feelings of
betrayal towards her father and her instable marriage to Ted Hughes. Plath s poetry, was a way to
explore her mental anguish and share her fixation with death, due to her deathly depression. Despite
Sylvia Plath s crippling life, her poetry was constructed in such an artistic manner in which it touched

Rainsford Cocky Quotes
Jerry was a kid at high school, who thought that he was all that. There is a difference between having
skills and putting them to use, and being confident and cocky and being arrogant about it. Jerry on the
other hand didn t have skills, and was very arrogant about everything that he did, boasting about his so
called talents. Rainsford falls overboard a yacht and comes upon an island, Ship Trap Island, where he
meets General Zaroff and is forced to play a game with the general. During the hunt, the generals over
confidence and cockiness leads to Rainsfords victory. Rainsford s experience and intellect helps to

The Crucible And Salem Witch Trials Similarities
The Red Scare and the Salem Witch Trials were both events that left a mark in American history. The
Red Scare began in 1917 and took place across the United States. The Red Scare was known as the
widespread promotion of anti communism. The Salem Witch Trials began in 1692 and took place in
Salem, Massachusetts. The Salem Witch Trials were various court hearings and prosecutions of people
in Salem accused of Witchcraft. Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible, a play about the Salem Witch
Trials, to send a message to Senator Joseph McCarthy, the face of the Red Scare. Even though both
events took place at completely different times their connection remains profound. The Crucible and
the Red Scare have various similarities and allegories that make both events connect despite the gap of
time. Arthur Miller, wrote The Crucible with the intention of comparing the Red Scare to the Salem
Witch Trials. One of the many similarities between the Red Scare and the Salem Witch Trials is the
way both events started. Both events were started by people making false accusations. During the Red
Scare people were accused of being communists. At one of his speeches in Wheeling, West Virginia,
in 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed to hold in my hand a list of individuals who were both
serving in government and participating in the communist party. (Brinkley2) Thanks to McCarthy s
popular style, people never questioned his supposed list. During the Salem Witch Trials people were

  • 2. Mama Ocollo s Portrait Of A Nusta Though the Peruvian artist remains unknown, the painting Inca Princess (Mama Ocollo) bares an uncanny resemblance to Portrait of a Nusta by Museo Inka. The image illustrates a woman, the royal princess, cloaked in detailed Inca clothing with many intricate squares sewn on displaying her level of nobility and power. She is holding an Incan man s decapitated head with blood still trickling downward. To the right stands a male dwarf servant waiting on said woman. Lastly, to the left side of the painting shows an intricate and large headpiece. It is a known fact that only most powerful and royal can acquire such item of clothing. While the princess externally represents what it looks like to be Inca, a conflict of identity lies underneath. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Colonization produces conflicting identities because it is an act in overwhelming one culture with another. Once a new group has exerted their power and control in a new land, their specific elements of life begins to spread throughout and eventually into the lives of the indigenous. For example, when the Spanish established their rule in Peru, slowly but surely, the native Andeans began to assimilate into their lifestyle. They incorporated Spanish culture into their daily lives such as utilising the color purple for their traditional uncus. Purple is a color that represents royalty in Europe. The influence of European ideology, such as Christianity, also played a large role in many Andean lives for example the Inca Princess depicted in this painting. Because the indigenous were constantly surrounded by the new Spanish culture, their identities reflected that. They were no longer purely Andean but humans with integrated cultures and values. In Conflict and Order, D. Stanley Eitzen writes culture is learned [...] it is not instinctive or innate in the human species [...] when a person joins a new social organization, she or he must learn the culture of that group . With no sign of the Spanish conquest departing anytime soon from Peru, the indigenous learns the culture of the new people whom they must share their land and lives with. They do this, not because their minds are more susceptible to allowing new ideas shape their identities, but because they are smart. Eitzen goes on to write when we learn the culture of a society [...] we know the rules, what is appropriate and inappropriate, what is moral and immoral, and what is beautiful and what is ugly . The Spanish had control over the Andeans, that is a fact. With control comes power and thus comes consequences if that power is rebelled against. By letting Spanish culture into their lives, the ... Pizza has become the most common favorite food among Americans and you can see it s popularity all over the world. People crave it so much that now you don t need to leave your home to get a slice of pie. Even in Italy pizza vending machines are starting to appear. Every second about 300 pizza slices are about to be eaten. The trend has no end in sight and with chains like pizza hut finding ways to reinvent the pizza people will likely keep buying those delicious slices of joy. But where did pizza begin? Many know it started in Italy but most just assume it has been around forever. The early ideas of pizza didn t even come to be since the 1700 s. Pizza started in Naples. Soon immigrants lead to the first sightings of pizza in America. Then New York wanted to make pizza easy and inexpensive. Chicago reinvented it so one could eat with a fork and knife. Pizza keeps evolving and growing and it is truly one of the best inventions ever to exist. But it started as something only a poor man would eat. The origins of pizza trace back to around the late 1700 s. People ate flat bread with cheese on it and sometimes a sauce was added. This was mildly popular but often the flatbread would contain fancy oils and herbs with fine cheese on top. Many higher ranked Italiens would eat flatbread but with oils and herbs on top to make it taste ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Essay on What Started the Zombie Craze and What Kept Them... 12th Composition 11° 16 December, 2009 What started the zombie craze and what kept them alive ? AHHHHhhhhhh........! Imagine being awakened by a soft, distance scream. Wide awake, the world returns to being silent except for a racing heartbeat. Suddenly, a soft resonating moan starts to fill the empty air of the bedroom. Looking out the window, the world is an eerie grey with nothing moving but the occasional garbage blowing in the wind. Suddenly the horizon begins to change as a crowd of people begin to emerge. Watching nervously, the figures get closer and turn into something much more menacing. They are all disease invested, flesh rotted, brain hungry zombies! Where did these undead monsters come from? How do they survive? What ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Night of the Living Dead gave the world its first zombie and since then the zombie has not stopped thirsting for human brains. Today, the new movie Zombieland has just been released into theaters so the zombie is still going strongly through culture. Night of the Living Dead was a serious horror look at zombies but society has turned a once terrifying genre into some humor. Spoofs like Shawn of the Dead and Zombieland has fun messing around with the rules of the post apocalyptic zombie movie genre (Machosky). However the reason the undead have survived so long is because they have broadened their publicity range. Not only does the world see zombies in movies, but mankind must watch out for Nazi zombies rising from the grave in videos games like Dead Snow and Call of Duty: World at War (Greene). Zombies have been expanded into music as well with the Kingston Trio s release of the song Zombie Jamboree . Even books have been used to spread the disease, such as at Borders zombie literature runs the gambit from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to Zombie Haiku (Greene). In addition, David Lubar has just recently expanded the zombie craze to elementary school children with his newest novel, My Rotten Life (Lauer Williams). This is a children s book about a middle school student who is also a zombie. Zombies, once a scary menace only for the brave at heart, have become a friendlier topic for everyone. • 6. Western Influence on Kuwait Kuwait and Western influence Over the past decades, Kuwait, like most Islamic countries have practiced strict measures in terms of their governance system with lots of times the religious aspect influencing greatly the kind of government in place and the type of governance that is used within Kuwait. This resulted in a closed, less democratic, religious, stereotypical and generally patriarchal society. This has however undergone a lot of change particularly with the embracing of the Western culture that is more open, diverse and liberal in nature. Positives of western culture interaction More democratic space Western culture has had far reaching effects on many aspects of lives of the Kuwaiti in the sense that people have become more open minded and the society has turned from suppressing the women, both domestically and socially, to embracing them and liberating them to make choices and participate in social events like men do. Ladies currently enjoy a lot of freedom with regard to what they put on and how they express themselves. Kuwaitis have also adopted modern pop culture something that was unheard of in the past. They have developed a sense of taste for whatever they buy, whatever they listen to, what they eat, watch, what they do on their bodies, hair and teeth. It is paradoxical that when Kuwait gained her independence from the United Kingdom in 1961, her citizens proclaimed liberation, when in actual sense there was none of it. Imagery And Symbolism In The Sick Rose By William Blake The Sick Rose by William Blake Twisted nursery rhyme through imagery and symbolism In this essay will be discussed how imagery and symbolism, used within the poem The Sick Rose by William Blake, contributes to the themes of the poem which is love, sexuality, violence and mortality. Firstly, all the themes will be discussed in detail to their meaning within this nursery style type of poem. Secondly, poetic devices such as apostrophe, personification and diction will be discussed to explain how these devices contribute to the imagery in the poem. Thirdly, symbolism and the type of symbolism used within the poem will be critically discussed in the context of the poem and the era in which the poem was written in. This will help better ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to the nature of the poem s content it can be said that the worm is a dark entity that does its work at night (line 3) when it is mostly invisible to others (line 2). The fact that the speaker calls the worm invisible could also mean that the worm has hidden intentions and dark secrets. In one opinion the poems themes can be linked if you think about the content in a critical matter. The rose is being infected by a worm which might as well be a person that forces his love upon the rose . This person might as well be a rapist and he can [fly] in the night...in the howling storm (line 3 4). Rape and sexual actions mostly take place at night time which explains line three. Eventually the aggressor or rapist finds the roses bed of crimson joy (line7 8) which is most likely the bed of passion/ pleasure seeing as red is a passionate colour referring to romance and love. The aggressor or rapist shares his dark secret love which could be rape that eventually kills the rose/ victim. Therefore, the theme of violence is relevant because rape and/ or murder are acts of violence, the theme of sex is relevant because that is what most rapist are interested in and the theme of love is relevant because even though this it is a twisted view, the love depicted by the worm (line 2) is indeed a type of ... • 12. Urban Segregation And Its Effects On Residential... The authors introduce the topic of inherited residential segregation patterns (Leetmaa) among ethnic groups in post communist Tartu, Estonia within the context of immigration policies implemented during the Soviet communist era. Using two dimensions preferences and segregation ethnicity and neighbor affluence (Leetmaa ,163), the study explores the possible causes of residential segregation in post Soviet Tartu and its effects on residential preferences shaped by liberal market forces and national identity. The research is presented through an urban sociological geographical perspective, citing recent studies in the US and Western Europe that suggest that urban neighborhoods are increasingly experiencing high levels of residential segregation along the line of race and ethnicity (Leetmaa 163). By comparison, the Tartu model is unique because it has not experienced any new immigration since 1991 (Leetmaa 163) compared to the rest of its European counterparts in the EU. Thus the pattern of segregation in Tartu reflects two major ethno linguistic groups that experienced preferential housing status under two different political and economic systems that are now inversed. During the Soviet period, Russian minority migrants enjoyed better housing choices under the central planning model. Today, the majority Estonian population enjoys a higher standard of living that allows for greater mobility and better housing choices in a free market economy. Next, the authors ... The threat was a major problem since Kuwait was a major supplier of oil. (ushistory.org) Hussein was not only hostile towards Kuwait, but he was also threatening Saudi Arabia. (ushistory.org) Just like Kuwait, Saudi Arabia is also a major oil supplier to the United States. The Bermuda Triangle Theory Mysteries and theories behind the Bermuda Triangle While researching different websites and resources about the Bermuda Triangle, I came across many different theories and explanations about the Bermuda Triangle. The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil s Triangle, is a section in the Atlantic Ocean between Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico where ships and planes have disappeared with no trace of them. The Bermuda Triangle covers about 500,000 square miles of ocean, which is a very popular shipping lane where ships travel through. In this essay theories and disappearances will be explained, giving a brief but thorough explanation of each topic. My goal in this essay is to provide These disappearances go all the way back to Christopher Columbus, stating that Columbus and his crew saw bright lights come out of the ocean and fly into the sky. Columbus claims there was a fire but scholars assume it was a sighting of a meteor falling. On the website article Bermuda Triangle: Where facts disappear , it is explained how the compasses begin to stop working, It has been inaccurately claimed that the Bermuda Triangle is one of the two places on earth at which a magnetic compass points towards true north. Normally a compass will point toward magnetic north. The difference between the two is known as compass variation. ... These lines signify his obsession of possessing his prey. Another instance in which consonances are used, as she fleeth afore, Fainting I follow. I leave off therefore . In this line there is an unremitting repetition of the letter F which gives a great indication that the hunter is out of breath and exhausted. When she flees, it quotes, fainting I follow . He can only barely catch up to the wind that follows behind her, so he realises here that the chase is futile. He apprehends the fact that the deer is not welcoming his affection, which refers back to the theme of unrequited love . Wyatt in addition introduces a second metaphor , wind in which he uses to describe the woman. The wind symbolises agility, freedom and is impossible to capture. The first octave makes out that this was all a wasted hunt, and that the poet is officially unsuccessful. In the closing sestet, the hunter addresses the other suitors who are determined to capture her that they have absolutely no chance and warns them that they ll suffer deep consequences if ... The coexistence of the uncommon disease known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy or DMD, has come to the attention of many and has manifested within this document to generalize the history, impact, and significance of the disease. The history of DMD stemmed from the progressive muscular dystrophy of two 10 year old boys names Conte and Gonji in 1836. Since this becoming the first historical account of such a disease, many doctors and specialists speculated a more catastrophic form of tuberculosis; when revisited by scientists it was concluded that they suffered from the milder Becker MD. The chart explains how the males who receive the disease get it from a carrier mother who is unaffected by the disease as the one affected X chromosome is masked by unaffected X chromosome; a task that the Y chromosome cannot achieve, thus making the male population inclined to receive it more likely than females. Figure 1 illustrates a more detailed Punnett Square depicts the common scenario. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is caused by a mutation of the dystrophin gene at locus Xp21, located on the short arm of the X chromosome. The DMD disease occurs primarily from frameshift mutations in the dystrophin gene. Just short of 70% of cases of DMD occur from deletion of the dystrophin gene, 10% of cases occur from the harmful addition of the gene. The remaining cases (that have medically been recorded), have occurred because of disastrous point mutations that change in the DNA sequence. It was first officially recognised by Hippocrates who described the symptoms of the disease as coughing up blood and weight loss that eventually led to death. In the 16th century a theory was proposed that the disease was transmitted via microorganisms. This was not proven until 1882. In the 1880 s, the chosen way of curing tuberculosis was for the patients to receive clear air, a balanced diet and plenty of rest. This was used not only to treat the patients but to also isolate them. During the 19th century, the spread of the disease slowed as living conditions and hygiene improved. Faulkner uses Sarty to portray that not every child grows up with ideal parents that genuinely care for he or she. Faulkner exemplifies this truth through pathos, symbolism, theme, and diction. Will Sarty be courageous and fight against his father or will he join his father and become a coward, like him? Faulkner exemplifies the hardships of some children through Sarty by appealing to the reader s pathos. By definition, pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response (YourDictionary). Sarty explains his feelings by saying, Maybe he will feel it too. Maybe it will even change him now from what maybe he couldn t help but be (Vidal, et. al). The reader can almost feel the sympathy pouring out of this little child s voice, which automatically makes the reader feel sorry for him. Sarty is hopeful that since his father has to pay for the rug that he ruined, then maybe he will feel resentment and realize what he has done wrong. He wants his father to change his ways, but he ... When looking at captivity narratives there is many different characteristics that can show if the document is reliable outside of any bias the author brought or that was inherent in the culture of that period. Defining a captivity narrative is a difficult job for many reasons. The chief reason is that since there are so many written concerning Indian captivity, it becomes necessary to have a category list or a type of checklist that could be used to look at the validity of a narrative as well as showcasing if it would be useful in any form. Neither scenario works. Darker skins find themselves in a battle they cannot change. In the past, the black community was not accepted in society because of their brown skin color, and they were forced to be slaves. Slave owners created the paper bag theory, which separated the blacks further within their own community. Those who were lighter than the paper bag got to work as house slaves, which is better than outside slaves. The lighter browns within the black community saw themselves superior to the darker browns, because, according to the paper bag theory, having a dark complexion was considered unattractive, and unintelligent. • 34. Figurative Language In The Scarlet Ibis It was in the clove of seasons, summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born, that the ibis lit in the bleeding tree (James Hurst, The Scarlet Ibis ). This line of figurative language from Hurst s short story shows the setting and how summer is gone, but autumn has not started yet. In literature, authors use figurative language to emphasize setting or to add to characterization. In The Scarlet Ibis , Doodle is a six year old disabled boy who is unable to walk. Brother , the narrator, works hard to get Doodle to be able to things that normal kids do, but the pride he has for himself does not want to deal with the embarrassment of having a disabled brother. In The Scarlet Ibis author James Hurst uses figurative language to establish the theme of how pride can blind oneself from the things that really matter. The metaphors used in the short story reveal to the reader the insecurity the brother has within himself. The brother works hard with Doodle to try to get him to walk, and once they succeed he feels great confidence in himself. Doodle struggles to move great distances, so getting him to walk further develops the brother pride. After he succeeds in getting Doodle to walk, he learns something new about his relationship with Doodle as well as learning that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death (5). The pride Brother has for himself causes him to push Doodle to work harder to achieve the goal of walking. He tells himself he is doing this for Doodle, that he wants Doodle to feel good about himself. However, the brother wants to feel good about himself by developing a non disabled brother. While Doodle does start to walk, the reader sees how the brother disregards Doodles feelings in the process. Like seeds, which are the start of any vegetable, plant or flower, pride is the start of a life, or a vine, that can lead to one of two outcomes, one that leads to a more self confident life, and another that causes pain and suffering in others. Through the use of metaphors the author reveals the narrator s own insecurity and how it causes him to make decisions for the wrong reasons. Furthermore, Hurst s use of personification also adds to the theme, by revealing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Hypothese of Kaibab Plateau in the Grand Canyon Essay Many will attest to the grandeur of the natural feature that exists in northern Arizona, but the formation of the Grand Canyon has befuddled geomorphologists to this day. This confusion can be attributed to the Kaibab Plateau, an anomaly considering the Colorado River traverses it seamlessly. Four prevalent hypotheses have been proposed since the 19th century, starting with the lake overflow proposition first brought up by John Newbury and then reinforced by Eliot Blackwelder. Newbury argued that a structure must have ponded an ancient lake causing an overspill to cut into the Grand Canyon. This argument holds that the river must have come after the plateau s existence. Unbeknownst to Newbury, the structure would be the Kaibab Plateau. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Antecedent supporters will claim that the river could flow anywhere on the Kaibab Plateau, but evidence of a river that strayed has not been found. In addition, the canyons of the Mogollon Highlands show evidence of ancient rivers that once flowed northeast against the southwest direction of the Colorado River the Antecedent proposition purports (3c). Gravel sediment where the Mogollon Highland s would have drained onto the Colorado Plateau supports this statement (3b). A true testament to the power of the Colorado River from the Rocky Mountains is evident in its capabilities to erode away volcanic bedrock in the past (5c). As many as 13 volcanic dams were formed in the Grand Canyon s past, but all did not withstand the Colorado River. Basaltic lava flows are relatively resistance, but the river has successfully eroded about 11,300 feet of volcanic material, equivalent to twice the depth of the Grand Canton itself (8b). Further proof of major rivers ability to effectively erode barriers can be found near Cameron, where the Little Colorado River has managed to change its course north and remove 150 feet of bedrock material (5c). With these factors in hand it is not hard to imagine that younger Colorado River had the capability to erode significant parts of an older Kaibab Plateau. Comprehensively, he argues that the contingency of humans having stable cognitive faculties is extremely inferior. Plantinga cites C.S. • 42. Mystery and Suspense in Gothic Novels Gothic literature began and was very strong at the time of the Romantic Writers Movement. Gothic novels share common characteristics that contribute to the overall feeling of the novel. Most Gothic novels involve a setting that typically added mystery and suspense. The novel usually took place in a castle like structure that was dark, scary, and isolated (Examine). In addition, the story enveloped omens or visions, supernatural or inexplicable events, overwrought emotion, women in distress, and a tyrannical male (Elements). Both Charlotte and Emily Bronte wrote gothic novels that used many of these characteristics, but their novels also transcended the boundaries of the genre. The novels Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre follow the gothic tradition in regards to setting, atmosphere, and supernatural events. However, both novels break from tradition in the matters of feminism and heroines. Both novels were influenced by gothic tradition because each novel incorporates characteristics specific to the gothic novels. The majority of Wuthering Heights takes place in the castle like home of Wuthering Heights. It is damp, dark, and creepy which contributes to the overall gothic atmosphere of the novel. • 43. How Different Chemicals Affect Surface Tension The aim of my experiment was to figure out how different chemicals affect surface tension. I chose this experiment because I have always wondered how a drop of water stays together as it falls through the air. My independent variable was the different chemicals used. My dependant variable was which liquid stayed on the penny best. The control in this experiment was pure water. My hypothesis was; if water mixed with salt and water mixed with detergent is tested, then detergent will cause the surface tension to weaken the most. By definition, Surface tension is the property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force, due to the cohesive nature of its molecules (USGS). Molecules in a drop of water cling to each other. This is why they can stay together as they fall through the air (Wick 9). In addition, water molecules at the surface of a liquid form stronger bonds (USGS). This is because they have no adjacent molecules on top of them so they exert more powerful forces to molecules on and below the surface of a liquid (USGS). For example, water striders can glide on the surface of water because their mass is not strong enough to break the surface tension (USGS). The dependent variable in this experiment was, which liquid stayed on the penny best. The independent variable was the different chemicals used.
