Informal Australian Lexicon
The informal Australian lexicon is utilised in everyday casual conversations and is thus recognisable
as a distinct, Australian characteristic. Slang has become familiarised in the lexicon due to its frequent
use in informal communication at an occurrence where lexemes are recognisable to be unequivocally
Australian. This further strengthens the interweaving of language and identity. One of the most
recognisable lexemes is the slang term Aussies , the shortened form of Australians , which [is] now so
widely known that even the Americans will refer to Australian sportspeople as [such], (Professor Roly
Sussex). Whilst the greeting G day, mate has become the most popular phrase of the archetypal
Australian, it transcends its simple denotation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A big part of the laid back perception of Australians is due to their extensive application of colloquial
terminology, commonly shortenings of original, commonplace lexemes known as diminutives. Most
diminutives in Australia are created by the shortening of a name or a noun and usually adding a bound
suffix of a, o, ie or y. Nearly one half of Australian diminutives share an ee sound as the last syllable,
which is common in other English variants and languages to express endearment, intimacy or
informality between speakers. Such examples are the popular barbie , bicky/bickie , and ambo .
Notable diminutives are the shortening of the organisation The Salvation Army into salvo s and
McDonald s into macca s . These slangs have become widespread enough throughout the country that
the organisations themselves have adopted their colloquial names for advertisement. This displays the
how deep the use of diminutives are within Australia, where it has established itself as an everyday
part of communication and lifestyle, becoming normalized. The popularisation of the evident standard
formula in which Australian slangs are invented has assisted to the relaxed imagery of the public of
the country, creating a standard of the people and the

What Was Suleiman s Last Battle
Suleiman s greatest victory may have been the Battle of Mohacs but, it certainly was not his last battle
during his reign. Suleiman s new alliance with Francis would serve beneficial to him in these future
battles, by having the French for support. The information that Suleiman and Francis had become
allies, sent Europe in to an uproar. For Francis to form an alliance with the Muslims was irreligious.
But, Francis did not question his alliance with Suleiman, he needed the ally in the war against Charles.
Suleiman, as well, would need the backing of Francis, not immediately, but in future battles. The next
campaign of battles Suleiman would see would be on the path to siege Vienna, where Suleiman hoped
to finish off Charles V. On May 10, 1529 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Roxelana (the Russian woman), nicknamed Hurrem (the merry one), was given to Suleiman as a gift
early in his reign, by his Grand Vizier, Ibrahim. Before Roxelana, the Ottomans followed a one
concubine one rule tradition. When she first arrived at the palace she attacked the chief sultana at the
time Gulbahar, tearing her hair out and scratching her face so that she could not appear as beauty in
front of Suleiman no more. With her successful ploy to rid the palace of the chief sultana, she now had
the full attention of Suleiman for herself. As time passed Suleiman became more infatuated with
Roxelana and she now wanted to bring the now separate Harem, or house of the concubines, together
under one roof. She found her window of opportunity when a fire destroyed the Old Seraglio and
requested to move into the new palace with Suleiman, Suleiman welcomed the idea. Suleiman became
extremely intimate and attached to her to this point and decided upon marriage with her. SAY SOME
SHIT ABOUT HIS POEM TO HER. With the marriage the Ottomans found it as unfamiliar and were
not sure what to make of it. As, one stated in the Journal of the Genoese Book of Saint George,
Everybody is talking about the marriage but, nobody is sure what it means . It was clear that Roxelana

Community Essay
Community
The point that community has an important effect on the shaping of a person s character is key in both
Pythia Peay s essay, Soul Searching and Winona LaDuke s interview transcribed in essay form
entitled, Reclaiming Culture and the Land: Motherhood and the Politics of Sustaining Community .
The two authors present ideas, similar and different, of what it means to live in and be a part of
community. Through examining these two essays, summarizing and synthesizing, we can gain a better
understanding of what community is and how it affects those within it.
Pythia Peay explains that for everywhere that she has resided, each place had a unique effect on her
character. Each of the five cities in which she has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She goes on to talk of other aspects of her community such as politics and women s roles but stays on
the point that her community has a very important part in shaping her character and the character of
those around her. Then she goes on to point out that the separation of political and cultural and
spiritual is an artificial separation that s articulated by industrial society (10). LaDuke was raised with
a different sense of values than most Americans and goes on to describe her upbringing. She notes that
she was raised with little appreciation for American culture and that consumerism, in part, is
responsible for cultural destruction. Her main idea lies in the difference between the average American
community and the way she lives in her Native community at White Earth. She points out the down
side to the American community, such as consumerism and deculturalizing of people, and tells of
some of the values that her Native community has installed upon her and her children, like respect and
community, which is really her main idea.
Both of these essays point out how community shapes character. In Peay s essay she concentrates on
community as ones surroundings. She would consider community as the city in which one lives.
LaDuke is more concerned with community as a person s ideals or way of life. Both authors imply
that a person s sense of place provokes a

My UCSB Experience
Today my class and I went to a field trip to UCSB. We went to UCSB to learn more about what will
we be doing when we get to college. There are many things that we saw, but unfortunately we did not
get the chance to see the WHOLE campus. Therefore, we only saw half of the campus, but it was still
a great thing to experience.
As we got inside a bus, I had a feeling it was going to take a long time to get there. As usual, I kept
looking at the window beside me. I think we arrived a little late, so we were behind schedule. After,
stepping out of the bus I was flabbergasted at how HUGE the campus was. I was excited to go or learn
what things are inside the buildings and learn amazing things. As we entered inside the campus there

Stamp Act Summary And Analysis
After the Seven Years War concluded, the mother country to the colonies, Great Britain, was left with
a tremendous debt. In order to pay this massive amount of money off, Parliament decided that rather
than just tax the home country of Great Britain, the colonies in the Americas needed to be taxed as
well. However, such taxes would not bode well with the colonist which led to more prevalent
resistance by the colonies. In response to resistance, Great Britain repealed the Stamp Act and in turn
released the Declaratory Act in attempts to show that British power in the colonies was absolute. After
the Stamp Act was passed, the colonist s congregated to pass resolutions regarding the Stamp Act, and
British Parliament responded with the Declaratory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the new, young, and immature king came some doubts and insecurities as he ran through
ministers quite rapidly (Davidson, DeLay, Heyrman, Lytle, Stoff, 2015). This allowed Grenville to be
removed as first minister and replaced with an individual who was actually against this taxation of
colonials. Resistance and repeal also proved that virtual representation back in the colonies would not
stand, and there needed to be a new system in place. Even with the repeal of the Stamp Act and a
sense of victory, the British Empire was quick to accompany the repeal with another act. Parliament
passed the Declaratory Act, asserting that it had the power to make laws for the colonies in all cases
whatsoever (Davidson, DeLay, Heyrman, Lytle, Stoff, 2015). It didn t seem to bother the colonist,
though, as they still believed that the British Empire had no right to impose taxes on colonies in the
American and stood by that belief. The passing of the Stamp Act to pay for the debts of war waged not
by colonials, but rather the motherland surely would not stand for colonial. Consequently, opposition
to taxation of colonials, especially opposition to the taxation without virtual representation led to even
riots congregations. Succeeding in proving that the Stamp Act was unconstitutional led to Parliaments
repeal, but put greater pressure on the government to show they were, indeed, still the great power that
governed the colonies led to the Declaratory Act. Overall, these 3

Octavia Butler s Parable Of The Sower
Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler, is the story of a girl, Lauren, forming a new sort of religion in
a post apocalyptic world. As she travels through the remnants of a lost world, she begins to formulate
her own belief system and calls it Earthseed. In short, Earthseed is described as a combination of
Buddhism, existentialism, Sufism in addition to other worldly beliefs (261). All in all, Lauren hopes to
create a new, sustainable religious community, and in turn, one day, a better human society. Despite
being raised in a rather religious community and family, with a preacher for a father, Lauren finds
faults with the God she has been taught to worship. She learns to shape her own ideas and beliefs
about religion and God to adapt to the dystopian world she has been brought up in. This brings us to
the question of: what is god? The simple answer to this question, according to Lauren is that God is
Change . The first chapter entry of the novel explains the fundamentals of Earthseed, she writes: All
that you touch you Change. All that you Change Changes you. The only lasting truth is change. God is
Change. (3). This seems rather logical, especially in the context of a distorted and dangerous world.
Lauren does not see God as a divine being, but as an idea or concept; there is no one face of God as
God is all around us in the shape of change. How could God be a divine being worthy or worship if he
could allow the total destruction of functional society and outbreak

Informal And Informal Language
Informal Language is Dependent on Context
Many of us switch between formal and informal language without much thought. It has become
almost instinctual to adapt the appropriate language to the purpose, audience and the social setting of
the discourse. Informal language includes the use of discourse particles, hypertaxis and non standard
syntax which are used to increase social proximity, promote in group membership and reinforce the
exclusivity of the group. The use of informal language largely depends on context: where the
conversation is upheld, what text type and mode it is in and the audience to which it is directed to.
The situation plays an imperative role into the degree in which informal language is used. Teenage

The spoken mode, in general, is much more personal and informal than the written with slimmer
chances of misunderstandings and responses tend to be instantaneous rather than delayed. While the
written mode is more scripted and usually appears without non fluency features, the spoken mode
involves many prosodic and paralinguistic features could be used including stress, large range of
volume (from whispering secrets to exclamations) and a rising intonation can help the speaker hand
over the floor. Fast pace can sometimes be understood as informal because the information may not
necessarily be viewed as important and a slower to medium pace may be used to ensure the audience
is comprehending what is said, this speed is more often used in formal language. Informal body
language may also be used such as waving of hands or excitedly jumping whilst formal, in
comparison, would include standing still and without the blatant display of emotion. By reviewing the
previous Ja mie example, we can see that not only does her situation change, but her audience also
changes from close friends to her peers, their parents, and her teachers. Ja mie shows how informal
language builds the private identity of her friendship group and how formal language distances herself
from her public audience. Audience predetermines whether informal language should be used
depending on the relationship between speaker and listener, private or public, and if the

An Hour Woman
The story of an hour, was a bit confusing the first time I read it. The second time that I read the
passage it became clearer to me. It is as one of those stories that mess with your mind throughout the
writing and then at the end drop a huge bomb on the readers, that leaves you more confused than when
you first began reading.
At the beginning of the story I thought that she would allow the death of her husband take a huge toll
on her emotions and her life. On page 1 paragraph 3 line 2, it states She wept at once, with sudden,
wild abandonment, in her sister s arms. She instantly felt grief, as if a dark cloud blocked her
sunshine. This is not what struck me about her opinion on the women population during the 19th
century it was the line before that where it is written that she did not hear the story the way other
women would. This suggested that the woman in the 19th century didn t have enough strength in them
to accept the absence of their husband, and continue living their lives. Women surrounded their lives
around these men that they married.
In page 2 paragraph 2 line 5, it says, She said it over and over under her breath: free, free, free! . It
puts the thought in the readers mind that marriage was an imprisonment to the wives. The question
does arise, why not leave if they felt so trapped and chained to their husbands? ... Show more content

which includes the parents of the women during this the 19th century, that installed this mentality in
these women that they must be married in order to have a source of life. They depended on these men

Essay on The Use of Dialect in the Jumping Frog of...
Use of Customs, Dialect and Social Status
In The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County
Mark Twain s The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is a short story with the lesson that
what goes around comes around. In this short story, which first appeared in 1856 and his first
successful story, Twain uses local customs of the time, dialect, and examples of social status in his
story to create a realistic view of the region in which the story takes place. The way that the characters
behave is very distinctive. Dialect is also used to give the reader a convincing impression of the
setting in The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County . The social status of the main characters

Twain uses local dialect throughout the story. Dialect enhances the story by painting a picture of the
surroundings, giving a deeper understanding of the characters and adding local color. The following
quotes show Twain s main purpose is using dialect, which is to emphasize the rural feel of the story s
setting. On page 1189 the narrator says He was always ready and laying for a chance; there couldn t be
no solit ry thing mentioned but that feller d offer to bet on it, and take ary side you please, as I was just
telling you. On page 1190 the narrator says, Other dogs jest by the j int of his hind leg and freeze to
it—not chaw . Smiley uses some interesting and somewhat peculiar phrases at the end of the story:
Smiley he stood scratching his head and looking down at Dan l a long time, and at last he says, ‘I do
wonder what in the nation that frog throw d off for—I wonder if there ain t something the matter with
him—he ‘pears to look mighty baggy, somehow. And he ketched Dan l by his neck, and hefted him,
and says, Why blame my cats if he don t weigh five pound! (1192)

It is generally agreed that the great philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau and the artist Jacques Louis

showing their devotion to their state and explore the notion of duty to the state each one by his own

The great philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau had inspired the revolution by his argument and ideas
that was based on Reason. He played a great role in exploring the notion of duty to the state by

Essay on The Origination Of Punk Rock
The Origination of Punk Rock
The time was in the mid seventies, there was a void in the music industry that needed to be filled. This
need for a new sound was aptly filled by punk rock, a new type of sound that had evolved from mostly
rock and a little pop music. The focus of this paper is on punk rock and it s ample beginnings, early
pioneers of the new sound, punk rock listener s cultural background and their ideas as a whole, bands
influenced by the punk rock movement, and the state of punk rock today.
The year is 1974, this year marks the birth of punk rock (1974). There is controversy as to where punk

Another one of punk rock s pioneers was the animated Iggy Pop. Iggy began his musical career, or let
me say, his career took off after leaving the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Iggy formed a band with
friends who really had no idea how to play their instruments. This way their lack of musical
knowledge would allow Iggy to incorporate his zany and unorthodox style into their playing style
(History). Iggy was a maniac on stage, cutting himself, screaming at fans, and displaying obscenities
unheard of in that time. Although Iggy never achieved much commercial success back then, Iggy just
released a song Corruption which is on the charts.
The punk subculture is often seen as a rebellious group of misguided youngsters who often come from
lower class dwellings and haven t gotten the attention that they needed so they dye their hair, dress
differently, and act differently. In Facing The Music edited by Simon Frith, Mary Harron reduced the
meaning of punk to the spectacle of middle class children dressing up in a fantasy of proletarian
aggression and lying desperately about their backgrounds (History). The flipside to that is that maybe
these youths are expressing their individualism and choose to stray away from

Amalgam Research Paper
I am writing my paper on amalgam history in dentistry. Amalgam was developed in England and
France it consisted of silver, tin, copper, zinc, and mercury. It was not openly embraced by organized
dentistry in America until the 1840s. The Crawcour brothers brought amalgam into the United States
in 1833. Half of the people with dental restorations in upstate New York consisted of amalgam in
1844. The American Society of Dental Surgeons made all of the members to sign a pledge that
restricted them from using mercury fillings, because at the time it was considered to be malpractice.
That created the first dental amalgam war, but it ended in 1856 with cancelation of the association.
In 1859 the American Dental Association (ADA) was founded and took the place of the American
Society of Dental Surgeons. The ADA strongly defended amalgam from the allegations of being too
risky from the health standpoint. In 1930 the ratio of the mercury to the remaining metallic mixture
was sixty six to thirty three. Conventional amalgams (gamma 2) has thirty two percent silver and
fourteen percent tin due to the low copper content they are most susceptible to corrosion. Non gamma

The Song Of Roland Poem Analysis
The Song of Roland by Dorothy L. Sayers is about a poetic battle between two religions and two
nations. King Charlemagne s army is at war with the Muslim kingdom in Spain called Saragossa ruled
by King Marsilla. King Charlemagne is determined to have the people of Saragossa submit to his laws
and rulings. King Charlemagne is the king of the Franks and a devoted Christian. His influence as a
Christian militant in the Western part of Mediterranean gave him a lot of power to expand the
Kingdom of the Franks. Not only was King Charles endured by the Pope, he was also considered a
successful conquered. He was the surrounded by his great warrior nobles who helped him in his
kingdom expansion. Roland was his dear nephew and a very skillful warrior who was accompanied by
his best friend Oliver.
As the poem continues, King Marsilla is afraid as to what could happen if King Charles takes over his
kingdom. In fear, King Marsilla promises King Charles to send great possession and gifts in exchange
for the Franks to leave Saragossa alone. King Charles and the rest of his associates accept his peace
offering. The tipping point in the poem is when Roland nominates his step father Ganelon to delivered
the message to King Marsilla. However, Ganelon full of envy and resentment against his step son uses
this opportunity to betray his step son and seek revenge. Genelon believed that Roland was eager to
choose him, so that he could die in the hands of the enemy. With the intension to directly

Analysis Of The Worst Years Of Our Lives By Barbara...
Almost everywhere people go today there are TVs: in restaurants, schools, doctors offices, and homes.
There is no way to escape the reach of technology. Barbara Ehrenreich, the author of The Worst Years
of Our Lives, believes that people are becoming couch potatoes because they are not going out and
doing the activities they see on TV. Generally, Ehrenreich is correct in her belief; people spend more
time watching TV, than living a healthy lifestyle and interacting with the people around them.
Furthermore, the social health of people is suffering due to watching TV, over hanging out with
friends. When watching TV people do not talk, as they need to hear the show they are watching. They
cannot have healthy relationships with friends if they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If people do not know how to talk to others, then they cannot get jobs that involve talking to others.
Some people are content with not having great jobs and settling for mediocre jobs; people live
vicariously through the TV. They can watch a show and fulfill the need to be the person in the show,
instead of actually being like that person in real life. Knowing how to communicate effectively is an
important life skill that people are losing from watching too much television. When customers ask
questions, people have to know how to properly address those questions and how to explain in a way
that makes sense for everyone involved. It is imperative that people know how to do this, otherwise
they are ineffective and others just get frustrated. Employers are not going to hire people that are not
going to be able to speak with customers or participate when brainstorming, even if they had a good
idea. People are becoming more introverted; no one talks with others face to face. They are too busy
watching TV to hang out with friends or family and are lacking human interaction that causes this loss

The Role Of Visual Spatial Relation On Cognitive And...
Visual spatial relation is a cognitive process that relates to the ability to perceive objects in relation to
others, which employs the cognitive processes perception and problem solving. This principle was
brought to the forefront by Rauscher et al (1993), which developed a theory about spatial temporal
abilities labeled the Mozart effect. Rauscher originally tested the Mozart effect by comparing spatial
ability test results of a group that sat in silence prior to testing, and a group that listened to Mozart or
Schubert prior to testing. The Mozart effect, therefore, indicates that listening to Mozart before testing
positively affected and increased test results. The introduction of this idea to the psychological field
spurred further replication and expansion experiments, one of which was conducted by Nantais and
Schellenberg (1999). These researchers expanded on the theory by testing the effect of 10 minutes of
Mozart s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major on test results in comparison with the effect of 10 minutes
of the short story The Last Rung on the Latter. The experiment performed in this internal assessment
was a replication of Nantais and Schellenburg s (1999) experiment on the Mozart effect in older
children. In the research replication, the aim of the study was to test the effect of environmental
stimuli on visual spatial ability. It was hypothesized for the replication study that student participant
preference would lead to better spatial ability performance and

Alternative Energy Production And Its Effects On Fossil Fuels
There has been a growing pressure to develop alternative energy production paths to reduce the
dependency on fossil fuels, while at the same time reducing CO2 emissions to prevent global
warming. Energy from the waste conversion is considered as alternative mean to create renewable
energy. Besides its importance in power generation, char as one of the pyrolysis product is considered
as a potential source that can be valorised alongside oil and gas (or syngas).
Pyrolysis is a thermochemical conversion processes that need an external source of heating to yield
gaseous and oily products in the total absence of oxygen, whose characteristics depend on feedstock
composition, temperature, reactor configuration and gasifying agent, and another key process (1,2).
This technology is considered as an attractive alternative to incineration for dealing with municipal
waste disposal due to its lower amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) produced
(3). Pyrolysis conditions and parameters are optimised to achieve the optimal output. However, the
thermal cracking process might lead to generating the extent of pyrolysis which is considered less
valuable.
One of the outputs, char, is a carbon rich matrix that contains almost all the inorganic compounds
present in the raw wastes and a significant amount of the condensed by products formed during the
pyrolysis process dispersed throughout a porous structure. In most cases, MSW pyrolytic char does
not have sufficient quality to

Private Property In John Locke s Second Treatise Of Society
Society can be structured in many ways. A good society requires mutual consent amongst its members,
and private property is at the root of earning this consent. In John Locke s Second Treatise of
Government, private property defines man as an individual, forces him into a society, and is his
instrument in achieving justice. It explains how man goes from existing in a state of nature to
participation in a social contract. Aristotle s Politics is concerned with how private property is closely
connected to the virtue of a city and the pursuit of a good life. Thomas More s Utopia satirizes the
ideal city because it completely abolishes private property. The author argues that this is possible in a
far fetched city, but it cannot bring order to a city that is already established. From these three works,
it is evident that private property is essential to the proper organization of a city because it allows for
individuality and development of the virtues. It is important that labor be involved in the claiming of
private property. Locke believes the earth is common property until a person exerts his or her activity
on it (18 20). It eliminates any doubt or quarreling over who has a right to what property (Locke 27).
Since it is labor indeed that puts the difference of value on everything, people are set apart by the
amount of unique effort they exert to obtain their property. This proves man is perfectly his own and
does not belong in common to others (Locke 29). Rather than

Theories Of Employee Retention
Here in the United States, there has been an emerging issue that has challenged management within
the workforce. That issue is simply put is employee retention. With so many at will employment
options out there, fierce competition amongst business and those businesses looking to operate more
efficiently with less staff, employee retention has become an issue. So we have to ask ourselves how
do we combat this issue? This issue is a very complex one here in America because of the melting pot
we are with cultures, beliefs, structures, restrictions, affirmative action and etc. Throughout our studies
the research has shown that thriving organizations will be the ones that adopt and emplace an
organizational behavior model that focuses on being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fourth would be how to overcome low motivation. With these factors, ideas of how to communicate
the plan within the organization must be implemented. The Sheriff has hired an expert advisor in the
field of Effective law enforcement organizational planning when understaffed to achieve the
aforementioned. For the purpose of this paper let s say that I will be this expert.
One of the key factors for retention strategy and hiring of new employees goes far and beyond a
competitive benefits package and salary. However the latter is very much so important and would
need to be addressed. After brief study of surrounding law enforcement agencies I have come to the
conclusion that MCSO is behind a little when it comes to compensation and benefits. The neighboring
county of Palm Beach has a starting salary of $47,220 for law enforcement positions (Sentinel, A. R.
2014). This is approximately a full $7,000 more than MCSO s starting salary. Not to mention the Fire
Department within Martin County has a starting salary around $48,000. In my professional opinion
public service is public service and both the fire department and sheriff s office fall under this
umbrella. There needs to be more parity here because it seems to be a common complaint amongst the
employees of the sheriff s office which negatively affects motivation and morale.
Research suggest that employees rank recognition, flexibility and training as top priorities for

The Pros And Cons Of Super Power
Many of us since we are little, imagine what it would be like to have super powers. Not only that, but
we also put into consideration which superpower would be the best, and why. Every time someone
asks which super power you think is the best you actually start to carefully list cons and pros in order
to get to the best super power. If I were to choose a super power, which one would I chose? I would
probably choose teleportation, also known as, teletransportation. I would choose this super power
because I could travel wherever I wanted to go. Not only would I be capable of doing that, but also I
would be able to do it without wasting any money. Unless you decide to walk, every other method of
transportation has a cost, but if you have teleportation you would be able to move places in a free way,
and also a lot faster. You could also get there in a matter of seconds. Say for example, you have an
emergency, and you need to get fast somewhere, for instance the hospital, you could simply teleport
there. You would save a lot of time that could probably save your life. ... Show more content on

If you decide to use teleportation a difficulty you may encounter with is the following: you will find
yourself unable to enjoy the trip, for example the car ride to your beach house, the airplane flight to
another country, etc. For some people the trip is what really matters to them, not the destination. Of
course, if you are one of these type of people then you won t think of teleportation as a great super
power. Most people care only about getting somewhere fast and without wasting too much money, if
you are one of these type of people, then you will definitely enjoy this super power. Besides that there
really is no other limit in this great super power. If you compare and contrast the cons and pros it s
pretty obvious that this superpower has a lot more pros than cons, therefore making this a great super

Correlation Between the Attack on Pearl Harbor and the...
The events of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 changed not just the American way of life,
but the way in which terrorism will forever be viewed. Moments after the first plane changed our way
of life by crashing into the first tower, it also changed the way people will live their lives for many
generations from that point forward. For the first time on Continental United States soil, America was
under siege. Months after the attack many political figures and citizens wondered about warning signs
and if there were indicators that may have identified a warning or imminent attack. As the attacks
were analyzed a correlation between the attack on Pearl Harbor and New York City had indicators of
imminent attacks.
In 1941, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These messages, intercepted on December 3rd and 4th weren t translated until December 10th. The
messages showed Tokyo asking for information concerning Pearl Harbor. Japan had no reason to ask
for this information, unless it planned to use it to attack ships in the harbor. If translated sooner, these
messages would have warned the US of the imminent attack. Many indicators for Pearl Harbor could
have repeated before the attack on the calm morning on 9 1 1.
In the past, there were many attacks on Americans that were treated as extremist acts and indicators of
continuing attacks against Americans and their targets of opportunity. One premonition of the 9 1 1
attacks occurred on the very site of the actual attack on 9 1 1. On February 26, 1993, the World Trade
Center was attacked by terrorists (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2008). They place a truck loaded
with 1,500 lbs of explosive in the basement structure of the North Tower. Their intention was to topple
it into the South Tower killing thousands. The results were six killed and almost two thousand injured
when the devastation was completed. Closer to the 9 1 1 attack, men with Middle Eastern physical
traits wanted to learn how to fly planes without learning to land them. This should have been an
indicator of hidden agendas which should have raised more alarms.
Security and Terrorism
So, with all these indicators and

Robert Louis Stevenson Today Is Best Remembered As A Writer
Robert Louis Stevenson today is best remembered as a writer of the Victorian Gothic and in particular
for his novella, Jekyll and Hyde (1893). In this work, Utterson, a lawyer, discovers the horrible secrets
his friend, Dr. Jekyll, has been hiding from him and the consequences that result. Straying away from
mainstream science, Jekyll pursues his own catastrophic interests in order to separate the two sides of
his morality and thusly creates his brutish double, Hyde. This text introduces the idea of human
duality and brings forth the question of morality. However, duality, although important, is only one
aspect of this novella, and there are other points of intrigue. An example of this intrigue is the role of
women or rather the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As a result, Jekyll has no understandable justification to explain his experimentation, and his character
can come across as irrational. Next, Campbell argues that, in order to focus on how the patriarchy
operates and fails within the context of the novella, women were eliminated. As previously stated, this
text revolves around a male centric plot in which women do not play a role. Essentially, this story is
about communities of men , focusing on their interactions and experiences in the London city as they
attempt to uncover the secret of Hyde (Hampson 109). In theory, women could potentially distract
from the story that Stevenson wanted to tell, and he consequently removed women from any important
role (Eberle Sinatra and Beauvais 151). Moving on, Stevenson himself even claimed to have
difficulties bringing characters to life, in particular women, and this problem extends to some of his
other works where women, and love as well, play a small role in comparison to the importance of the
male characters (Linehan 34). While expressing disdain with male vanity and also with men s typical
perceptions of women, Stevenson also conveyed fascination with the idea of how men underestimate
women. By excluding women from his story, Stevenson may have cleverly demonstrated this
underestimation, using both himself, as the writer, and the male characters in Jekyll and Hyde to
explain this phenomenon. Nonetheless, some

I was highly enthusiastic for the coming of my freshman experience. Time was flying by and before I

purpose of the study was to find a way to help people who are experiencing spinal cord damage which
can severely limit the way a person carries out day to day activities. The article states that before now

  • 2. Informal Australian Lexicon The informal Australian lexicon is utilised in everyday casual conversations and is thus recognisable as a distinct, Australian characteristic. Slang has become familiarised in the lexicon due to its frequent use in informal communication at an occurrence where lexemes are recognisable to be unequivocally Australian. This further strengthens the interweaving of language and identity. One of the most recognisable lexemes is the slang term Aussies , the shortened form of Australians , which [is] now so widely known that even the Americans will refer to Australian sportspeople as [such], (Professor Roly Sussex). Whilst the greeting G day, mate has become the most popular phrase of the archetypal Australian, it transcends its simple denotation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A big part of the laid back perception of Australians is due to their extensive application of colloquial terminology, commonly shortenings of original, commonplace lexemes known as diminutives. Most diminutives in Australia are created by the shortening of a name or a noun and usually adding a bound suffix of a, o, ie or y. Nearly one half of Australian diminutives share an ee sound as the last syllable, which is common in other English variants and languages to express endearment, intimacy or informality between speakers. Such examples are the popular barbie , bicky/bickie , and ambo . Notable diminutives are the shortening of the organisation The Salvation Army into salvo s and McDonald s into macca s . These slangs have become widespread enough throughout the country that the organisations themselves have adopted their colloquial names for advertisement. This displays the how deep the use of diminutives are within Australia, where it has established itself as an everyday part of communication and lifestyle, becoming normalized. The popularisation of the evident standard formula in which Australian slangs are invented has assisted to the relaxed imagery of the public of the country, creating a standard of the people and the ... • 3. What Was Suleiman s Last Battle Suleiman s greatest victory may have been the Battle of Mohacs but, it certainly was not his last battle during his reign. Suleiman s new alliance with Francis would serve beneficial to him in these future battles, by having the French for support. The information that Suleiman and Francis had become allies, sent Europe in to an uproar. For Francis to form an alliance with the Muslims was irreligious. But, Francis did not question his alliance with Suleiman, he needed the ally in the war against Charles. Suleiman, as well, would need the backing of Francis, not immediately, but in future battles. The next campaign of battles Suleiman would see would be on the path to siege Vienna, where Suleiman hoped to finish off Charles V. On May 10, 1529 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Roxelana (the Russian woman), nicknamed Hurrem (the merry one), was given to Suleiman as a gift early in his reign, by his Grand Vizier, Ibrahim. Before Roxelana, the Ottomans followed a one concubine one rule tradition. When she first arrived at the palace she attacked the chief sultana at the time Gulbahar, tearing her hair out and scratching her face so that she could not appear as beauty in front of Suleiman no more. With her successful ploy to rid the palace of the chief sultana, she now had the full attention of Suleiman for herself. As time passed Suleiman became more infatuated with Roxelana and she now wanted to bring the now separate Harem, or house of the concubines, together under one roof. She found her window of opportunity when a fire destroyed the Old Seraglio and requested to move into the new palace with Suleiman, Suleiman welcomed the idea. Suleiman became extremely intimate and attached to her to this point and decided upon marriage with her. SAY SOME SHIT ABOUT HIS POEM TO HER. With the marriage the Ottomans found it as unfamiliar and were not sure what to make of it. As, one stated in the Journal of the Genoese Book of Saint George, Everybody is talking about the marriage but, nobody is sure what it means . It was clear that Roxelana was the ... • 4. Community Essay Community The point that community has an important effect on the shaping of a person s character is key in both Pythia Peay s essay, Soul Searching and Winona LaDuke s interview transcribed in essay form entitled, Reclaiming Culture and the Land: Motherhood and the Politics of Sustaining Community . The two authors present ideas, similar and different, of what it means to live in and be a part of community. Through examining these two essays, summarizing and synthesizing, we can gain a better understanding of what community is and how it affects those within it. Pythia Peay explains that for everywhere that she has resided, each place had a unique effect on her character. Each of the five cities in which she has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She goes on to talk of other aspects of her community such as politics and women s roles but stays on the point that her community has a very important part in shaping her character and the character of those around her. Then she goes on to point out that the separation of political and cultural and spiritual is an artificial separation that s articulated by industrial society (10). LaDuke was raised with a different sense of values than most Americans and goes on to describe her upbringing. She notes that she was raised with little appreciation for American culture and that consumerism, in part, is responsible for cultural destruction. Her main idea lies in the difference between the average American community and the way she lives in her Native community at White Earth. She points out the down side to the American community, such as consumerism and deculturalizing of people, and tells of some of the values that her Native community has installed upon her and her children, like respect and community, which is really her main idea. Both of these essays point out how community shapes character. In Peay s essay she concentrates on community as ones surroundings. She would consider community as the city in which one lives. LaDuke is more concerned with community as a person s ideals or way of life. Both authors imply that a person s sense of place provokes a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. My UCSB Experience Today my class and I went to a field trip to UCSB. We went to UCSB to learn more about what will we be doing when we get to college. There are many things that we saw, but unfortunately we did not get the chance to see the WHOLE campus. Therefore, we only saw half of the campus, but it was still a great thing to experience. As we got inside a bus, I had a feeling it was going to take a long time to get there. As usual, I kept looking at the window beside me. I think we arrived a little late, so we were behind schedule. • 6. Stamp Act Summary And Analysis After the Seven Years War concluded, the mother country to the colonies, Great Britain, was left with a tremendous debt. In order to pay this massive amount of money off, Parliament decided that rather than just tax the home country of Great Britain, the colonies in the Americas needed to be taxed as well. However, such taxes would not bode well with the colonist which led to more prevalent resistance by the colonies. In response to resistance, Great Britain repealed the Stamp Act and in turn released the Declaratory Act in attempts to show that British power in the colonies was absolute. After the Stamp Act was passed, the colonist s congregated to pass resolutions regarding the Stamp Act, and British Parliament responded with the Declaratory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the new, young, and immature king came some doubts and insecurities as he ran through ministers quite rapidly (Davidson, DeLay, Heyrman, Lytle, Stoff, 2015). This allowed Grenville to be removed as first minister and replaced with an individual who was actually against this taxation of colonials. Resistance and repeal also proved that virtual representation back in the colonies would not stand, and there needed to be a new system in place. Even with the repeal of the Stamp Act and a sense of victory, the British Empire was quick to accompany the repeal with another act. Parliament passed the Declaratory Act, asserting that it had the power to make laws for the colonies in all cases whatsoever (Davidson, DeLay, Heyrman, Lytle, Stoff, 2015). It didn t seem to bother the colonist, though, as they still believed that the British Empire had no right to impose taxes on colonies in the American and stood by that belief. The passing of the Stamp Act to pay for the debts of war waged not by colonials, but rather the motherland surely would not stand for colonial. Consequently, opposition to taxation of colonials, especially opposition to the taxation without virtual representation led to even riots congregations. Succeeding in proving that the Stamp Act was unconstitutional led to Parliaments repeal, but put greater pressure on the government to show they were, indeed, still the great power that governed the colonies led to the Declaratory Act. • 7. Octavia Butler s Parable Of The Sower Parable of the Sower, by Octavia Butler, is the story of a girl, Lauren, forming a new sort of religion in a post apocalyptic world. As she travels through the remnants of a lost world, she begins to formulate her own belief system and calls it Earthseed. In short, Earthseed is described as a combination of Buddhism, existentialism, Sufism in addition to other worldly beliefs (261). All in all, Lauren hopes to create a new, sustainable religious community, and in turn, one day, a better human society. Despite being raised in a rather religious community and family, with a preacher for a father, Lauren finds faults with the God she has been taught to worship. She learns to shape her own ideas and beliefs about religion and God to adapt to the dystopian world she has been brought up in. This brings us to the question of: what is god? The simple answer to this question, according to Lauren is that God is Change . The first chapter entry of the novel explains the fundamentals of Earthseed, she writes: All that you touch you Change. All that you Change Changes you. The only lasting truth is change. God is Change. (3). This seems rather logical, especially in the context of a distorted and dangerous world. Lauren does not see God as a divine being, but as an idea or concept; there is no one face of God as God is all around us in the shape of change. How could God be a divine being worthy or worship if he could allow the total destruction of functional society and outbreak ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Informal And Informal Language Informal Language is Dependent on Context Many of us switch between formal and informal language without much thought. It has become almost instinctual to adapt the appropriate language to the purpose, audience and the social setting of the discourse. Informal language includes the use of discourse particles, hypertaxis and non standard syntax which are used to increase social proximity, promote in group membership and reinforce the exclusivity of the group. The use of informal language largely depends on context: where the conversation is upheld, what text type and mode it is in and the audience to which it is directed to. The situation plays an imperative role into the degree in which informal language is used. Teenage conversations during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The spoken mode, in general, is much more personal and informal than the written with slimmer chances of misunderstandings and responses tend to be instantaneous rather than delayed. While the written mode is more scripted and usually appears without non fluency features, the spoken mode involves many prosodic and paralinguistic features could be used including stress, large range of volume (from whispering secrets to exclamations) and a rising intonation can help the speaker hand over the floor. Fast pace can sometimes be understood as informal because the information may not necessarily be viewed as important and a slower to medium pace may be used to ensure the audience is comprehending what is said, this speed is more often used in formal language. Informal body language may also be used such as waving of hands or excitedly jumping whilst formal, in comparison, would include standing still and without the blatant display of emotion. By reviewing the previous Ja mie example, we can see that not only does her situation change, but her audience also changes from close friends to her peers, their parents, and her teachers. Ja mie shows how informal language builds the private identity of her friendship group and how formal language distances herself from her public audience. • 9. An Hour Woman The story of an hour, was a bit confusing the first time I read it. The second time that I read the passage it became clearer to me. It is as one of those stories that mess with your mind throughout the writing and then at the end drop a huge bomb on the readers, that leaves you more confused than when you first began reading. At the beginning of the story I thought that she would allow the death of her husband take a huge toll on her emotions and her life. On page 1 paragraph 3 line 2, it states She wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment, in her sister s arms. She instantly felt grief, as if a dark cloud blocked her sunshine. This is not what struck me about her opinion on the women population during the 19th century it was the line before that where it is written that she did not hear the story the way other women would. This suggested that the woman in the 19th century didn t have enough strength in them to accept the absence of their husband, and continue living their lives. Women surrounded their lives around these men that they married. In page 2 paragraph 2 line 5, it says, She said it over and over under her breath: free, free, free! . It puts the thought in the readers mind that marriage was an imprisonment to the wives. The question does arise, why not leave if they felt so trapped and chained to their husbands? ... Use of Customs, Dialect and Social Status In The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County Mark Twain s The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is a short story with the lesson that what goes around comes around. In this short story, which first appeared in 1856 and his first successful story, Twain uses local customs of the time, dialect, and examples of social status in his story to create a realistic view of the region in which the story takes place. The way that the characters behave is very distinctive. Dialect is also used to give the reader a convincing impression of the setting in The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County . On page 1189 the narrator says He was always ready and laying for a chance; there couldn t be no solit ry thing mentioned but that feller d offer to bet on it, and take ary side you please, as I was just telling you. It was not openly embraced by organized dentistry in America until the 1840s. The Crawcour brothers brought amalgam into the United States in 1833. Half of the people with dental restorations in upstate New York consisted of amalgam in 1844. The American Society of Dental Surgeons made all of the members to sign a pledge that restricted them from using mercury fillings, because at the time it was considered to be malpractice. That created the first dental amalgam war, but it ended in 1856 with cancelation of the association. In 1859 the American Dental Association (ADA) was founded and took the place of the American Society of Dental Surgeons. The ADA strongly defended amalgam from the allegations of being too risky from the health standpoint. In 1930 the ratio of the mercury to the remaining metallic mixture was sixty six to thirty three. • 24. The Role Of Visual Spatial Relation On Cognitive And... Visual spatial relation is a cognitive process that relates to the ability to perceive objects in relation to others, which employs the cognitive processes perception and problem solving. This principle was brought to the forefront by Rauscher et al (1993), which developed a theory about spatial temporal abilities labeled the Mozart effect. Rauscher originally tested the Mozart effect by comparing spatial ability test results of a group that sat in silence prior to testing, and a group that listened to Mozart or Schubert prior to testing. The Mozart effect, therefore, indicates that listening to Mozart before testing positively affected and increased test results. The introduction of this idea to the psychological field spurred further replication and expansion experiments, one of which was conducted by Nantais and Schellenberg (1999). These researchers expanded on the theory by testing the effect of 10 minutes of Mozart s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major on test results in comparison with the effect of 10 minutes of the short story The Last Rung on the Latter. The experiment performed in this internal assessment was a replication of Nantais and Schellenburg s (1999) experiment on the Mozart effect in older children. In the research replication, the aim of the study was to test the effect of environmental stimuli on visual spatial ability. Besides its importance in power generation, char as one of the pyrolysis product is considered as a potential source that can be valorised alongside oil and gas (or syngas). Pyrolysis is a thermochemical conversion processes that need an external source of heating to yield gaseous and oily products in the total absence of oxygen, whose characteristics depend on feedstock composition, temperature, reactor configuration and gasifying agent, and another key process (1,2). This technology is considered as an attractive alternative to incineration for dealing with municipal waste disposal due to its lower amount of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) produced (3). Pyrolysis conditions and parameters are optimised to achieve the optimal output. However, the thermal cracking process might lead to generating the extent of pyrolysis which is considered less valuable. • 26. Private Property In John Locke s Second Treatise Of Society Society can be structured in many ways. A good society requires mutual consent amongst its members, and private property is at the root of earning this consent. In John Locke s Second Treatise of Government, private property defines man as an individual, forces him into a society, and is his instrument in achieving justice. It explains how man goes from existing in a state of nature to participation in a social contract. Aristotle s Politics is concerned with how private property is closely connected to the virtue of a city and the pursuit of a good life. Thomas More s Utopia satirizes the ideal city because it completely abolishes private property. The author argues that this is possible in a far fetched city, but it cannot bring order to a city that is already established. From these three works, it is evident that private property is essential to the proper organization of a city because it allows for individuality and development of the virtues. It is important that labor be involved in the claiming of private property. Locke believes the earth is common property until a person exerts his or her activity on it (18 20). It eliminates any doubt or quarreling over who has a right to what property (Locke 27). Since it is labor indeed that puts the difference of value on everything, people are set apart by the amount of unique effort they exert to obtain their property. This proves man is perfectly his own and does not belong in common to others (Locke 29). Rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This text introduces the idea of human duality and brings forth the question of morality. Next, Campbell argues that, in order to focus on how the patriarchy operates and fails within the context of the novella, women were eliminated. As previously stated, this text revolves around a male centric plot in which women do not play a role. Essentially, this story is about communities of men , focusing on their interactions and experiences in the London city as they attempt to uncover the secret of Hyde (Hampson 109). In theory, women could potentially distract from the story that Stevenson wanted to tell, and he consequently removed women from any important role (Eberle Sinatra and Beauvais 151). The method they used to rehabilitate the rats spinal cord was by electrically stimulating neurons that would normally be stimulated if the rats spinal cord was not damaged. The whole purpose of the study was to find a way to help people who are experiencing spinal cord damage which can severely limit the way a person carries out day to day activities. The article states that before now other rehabilitation efforts helped some but not enough to allow the person experiencing the injury to recover. How the electrical stimulation works is, electrical excitation is given to the parts of the undamaged spinal cord of the rat, this then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
