Essay Jack the Ripper
AP English IV
Book Report
Jack the Ripper
Jack the Ripper was a notorious serial killer, whom some believe never even existed at all.
From August to November 1888, Jack the Ripper terrorized the East End of London by being
responsible for the death and mutilation of at least seven female prostitutes. The destitute East End is
also known as the White Chapel district of London, England. A few of the prostitutes were targeted as
they were leaving brothels in and around the White Chapel district. Jack the Ripper seemed to be
targeting drunken women who had no sense of time or what they were doing (Jack the Ripper).
Jack the Ripper is just a name given to an unidentified late 19th century murderer. No one actually
knows who this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rest of the responsibility lies with the Ripper. He may have been a sexual serial killer of a type all
too common in the 1990 s, but he was also bent on terrifying a city and making the whole world take
notice of him by leaving his horribly mutilated victims in plain sight. Lastly, the Ripper was never
caught and it is the mysteries surrounding this killer that both add to the romance of the story and
creating an intellectual puzzle that people still want to solve ( Ebsco host).
It is unclear just how many women the Ripper killed. It is generally accepted that he killed five,
though some have written that he murdered only four while others say seven or more. The public,
press, and even many junior police officers believed that the Ripper was responsible for nine slayings.
The five that are generally accepted are:
1. Mary Ann (Polly) Nichols murdered Friday, August 31 1888.
2. Annie Chapman, murdered Saturday , September 8, 1888.
3. Elizabeth Stride, murdered Sunday, September 30, 1888.
4. Catharine Eddowes, also murdered that same date.
5. Mary Jane (Marie Jeanette) Kelly, murdered Friday, November 9, 1888. Besides these five there are
good reasons to believe that the first victim was really Martha Tabram who was murdered Tuesday,
august 7, 1888, and there are important considerations for questioning whether Stride was a Ripper
victim. As to the actual number of women that the Ripper killed, there is no simple

How Do Antitrust Policies Help Or Hurt Society
To what extent to antitrust policies help or hurt society? Please explain and specify what clauses (at
least 2 or 3 clauses) within the Sherman and Clayton Antitrust acts have protected/hurt consumers and
business from the ills of monopolies. Antitrust policies are mot harmful to society than they are
helpful. The Antitrust laws that were apparently focused on the restriction of monopolies for the
safeguarding public welfare and just prices have instead been used by the government in ways that are
more harmful to consumers than beneficial. More often than not, these laws obstruct innovation and
impede competition and free trade. The main purpose of the laws is to ensure that large corporations
do not take advantage of consumers, but in the process of maintaining this order, the government may
be restricting companies that have the potential of being beneficial for society with fair prices in the
long run. The Antitrust Acts can be seen as more of an effort to maintain and keep the doors open of
businesses that otherwise would not be able to withstand the competition of more efficient businesses.
Therefore, they can be seen more of a restriction on the development of ... Show more content on

Regulation can be seen as an interference with innovation and creativity. Rather than ensuring that a
firm does not disobey the Acts, regulation may be responsible for the inefficiency of a firm. For
example, the only individuals capable of determining the most effective and efficient methods of
managing an industry are those who are active participants in it, not individuals who are not in the
loop of managing a successful international business such as the lawmakers and politicians who
enforce these acts. The only possible and sound way to determine the best move for a firm is through
the wisdom gained with experience and intimate knowledge on the subject. Only then would
competition within the free market be

The Components Of Social Work
The main element that drew me to the profession of social work was the diverse opportunities
available. Social work is a very flexible field that consists of many different components such as
family and child welfare, poverty and inequality, and substance abuse/ addiction. The main component
of social work that interests me is working with people who have disabilities, mental and/or physical.
According to our textbook about 11.3% of social workers with bachelor s work in this field (Cox,
Tice, Long, 2016, pg. 17). I discovered that I was interested in this component of social work after a
traumatic experience that left me with a disability.
Component of Social Work A disability is usually defined as a decline in function that can either be
temporary or permanent. There are two main groupings of disabilities; categorial and functional.
Categorial disabilities include mental illnesses and sensory damage which often leads to
developmental delays. In comparison, functional disabilities cause limitations during physical activity.
Individuals can also suffer from more than one disability which is known as a co occurring disability
(Cox et al., 2016, pg. 159). Social workers often view disabilities in three types; developmental
disabilities, physical disabilities, and mental disabilities. A developmental disability is a long term
disability that is typically diagnosed before age 22. These disabilities include Autism, Cerebral Palsy,
and Down Syndrome (Cox et al., 2016, pg.

Synthesis Essay On Huckleberry Finn
Huck Finn Synthesis Essay: The Great Race Debate Slavery stretches its cruel branches into decades
of history. According to the American Anti slavery and Civil Rights Timeline on Ushistory.org, the
portuguese were the first to negotiate a slave trade in 1472. The portuguese slave trade agreement also
included ivory and gold as well as slaves. In 1610, the first ship carrying slaves touched down in the
new world. Four years after that the British Colony of Massachusetts became the first colony to
recognize slavery as a legal institution. For as long as slavery has been a legal institution abolitionists
have been advocating for the freedom and rights of slaves. In 1671 George Fox, the founder of the
quakers, talked out against the institution of slavery in the new world. In 1861 America ripped itself
apart fighting a war, known as the American Civil War, that would ultimately abolish slavery in the
United States of America. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was written and published
after the end of the civil war, but is set forty to fifty years before the beginning of the civil war. At this
time it was socially acceptable to own slaves, especially in the south where Huckleberry Finn lives. It
was not uncommon for slaves to be beaten or whipped if their work was unsatisfactory. Slaves were
treated as people without rights and property to their white owners. Today the transatlantic slave trade
has left its mark on America. There are still white supremacist groups, like the KKK, who believe that
they are the superior race and black people should be eradicated. Racial profiling of black people has
been an increasing issue to. Black people are getting killed and sent to jail for crimes that if a white
person were to commit, the white person would receive a lesser sentence. Today racism is still running
rampant in America. Many schools have banned teachers from teaching on Twain s Huckleberry Finn
for various reasons. One of those reasons is that Twain uses the word nigger, and he uses it to many
times. At the time that this book was written, slaves and free black people were called niggers. So
Twain in his writing is being politically correct when writing about Jim and the other slaves

Liberal Feminism vs. Radical Feminism Essay
Liberal Feminism and Radical Feminism
The goal of feminism as both a social movement and political movement is to make women and men
equal not only culturally, but socially and legally. Even though there are various types of feminism
that focus on different goals and issues, the ultimate end to feminism is abolishing gender inequality
that has negative effects on women in our society. The issues and goals that a feminist may have are
dependent on the social organization or the type of economic structure that is present. However, an
ultimate end (a goal, achievement and/or accomplishment) would have to be social equality between
men and women. This would mean the elimination of bias and discrimination towards women and the

They also argue that gender inequality in not the outcome of choices, personal attributes or
relationships with others, but structural sources such as workplaces, schools, and the government as
they are unable to provide women with the same resources as men. This includes healthcare,
education, equal wages and an overall balance between men and women. On the other hand, radical
feminism is a form of resistance feminism, which means their issues primarily lie within patriarchy or
men s dominance towards women. They argue that patriarchy is found wherever men and women are
in contact with each other. They believe that patriarchy is almost impossible to abolish because to be
superior is an attribute that most men have acquired of is already built into them. And whether it s
consciously or subconsciously, these traits are applied into their privileges that Western society has
given them (because they are men) and displayed within all the different aspects and occupations in
their lives. The main view of liberal feminism is that all people are created equal by God and deserve
equal rights. These types of feminists believe that oppression only exists because of the way men and
women are socialized by society, which supports patriarchy and keeps men in powerful positions.
Liberal feminists believe that women have the same mental capacity as males and should

generalized anxiety disorder Essay
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic and often disabling condition that is associated with
uncontrollable worry and tension. The vicious cycle of anxiety and worry interferes with relationships,
careers, and education, and often leads to depression. This disorder is much more than the normal
anxiety that everyone experiences from time to time, and can be crippling in its severity. GAD is
unlikely to disappear without proper treatment, and often worsens over time.
Physical manifestations of GAD often include headaches, trembling, twitching, fatigue, irritability,
frustration, muscle tension, and inability to concentrate. Sleep disturbances may also occur.

Women Go Into Leadership
Title:
Women go into leadership female style or male style?
The Pitch:
The debate about the difference in leadership style of women and men continues to attract attention
since women make strides into leadership position dominated mainly by men. Men have long been
holding these leadership roles and have defined styles accepted by people. Therefore, it is not
surprising that women are usual the focus in terms of the discussion on gender difference in leadership
styles. There seems to be great disagreement about the behaviour of women and men actually
performing such roles (Eagly, 2001). This disagreement on this focus can be divided into two groups.
One is the no difference camp, who commonly agreed that there are few differenced in the ... Show

In other words, communal aspects are more presented in a transformational leadership style. While
transformational leaders are portrayed to have a personalized view of each co worker and they often
take into account their colleagues individual needs and development (Eagly, 2003).
Based on Eagly and Johannesen Schmidt theory, female and male forms of leadership and
empowerment seem to be different. Communal and transformational characteristics are more
presented by women than men. So some women exhibited an open and participatory leadership style.
Additionally, women are perceived to work harder and take their work more seriously, and women are
less concern with salary than the recognition of a good done of job (Alvesson, 2009).
The focus of the debate concentrates on: In what context leadership style shows a similarity or a slight
difference between women and men and is there a specific female form of leadership? This
documentary shows the different leadership styles of women by case studies. It will investigate
whether or perhaps there is a specific female style of leadership preferred by a majority of women.
POV:
Social role theory of sex differences and similarities convincingly explains the sex differences in
leadership style. At the same time, there are certain expectations coming from co workers towards
their leaders when they are

The Training Of A Neural Networks
In order to have a better understanding of the mechanism used in the prediction process, we need to
know what are the stopping conditions, as this process involves a finite number of iterations known a
priori. It has been previously proved one of the problems that occur during the training of a neural
networks is overfitting towards the input data, which generates low quality predictions [56]. In order
to reduce this tendency, the early stopping criteria has been formulated. This involves dividing the
input set in three subsets [57]: training set, used to estimte the weights; testing set, used to assess the
prediction sample and validation set, which is an accuracy indicator of the prediction sample, although
it is not used during the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Application using neural networks for the real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) prediction This is an
empirical example which has the role of highlighting the differences between a neural network and a
linear regression model. Lamy Robert estimated a linear regression model to predict the growth of real
GDP in Canada [59]. His model explains 82% of the GDP variation in the period 1978 1998. The
coefficient obtained are statistically significant so, he the model can be used to predict the values of
the GDP for different periods. His model contains six independent variables, which are: R_(t 1) is the
quarterly growth of the Canadian Financial Index at t 1; F_t is the employment growth rate at time t;
F_(t 1) is the employment growth rate at t 1; B_t is the consumer confidence index; d_(t 9) is the first
difference of the long term real interest rate at time t 9 (9 month before time t); d_(t 3) is the first
difference of the government budget balance as a share of GDP, at time t 3 (3 months before time t).
Four dummy variables have been included in the model to control four periods (quarter 1 in 1980,
quarter 1 in 1981, quarter 4 in 1986 and quarter 3 in 1991). The linear regression model was estimated
based on 62 observations and is given by: 〖GDP〗_t= 1.695+0.075R_(t 1)+0.3F_t+0.25F_(t

Water Is The Backbone Of Civilization Essay
Water is the backbone of civilization as it determines which societies rise or fall. In the modern era,
California has grown to be an agricultural powerhouse, producing nearly half of the nation s fruits,
nuts and vegetables (Parsons, 2014). In recent years, the state has faced an exceptional drought,
causing the state to enact various emergency water conservation regulations. For many farmers
throughout the state, whose main source of water is from underground wells, irrigations of fields have
continued at a steep price. In order to keep irrigating their fields, farmers have had to dig deeper in
underground wells to reach the water level in underground aquifers. Currently, the state consumes two
million acre feet more than is replenished annually (SWRCB, 2012). The general problem is that
many groundwater wells do not have flow measurement. The specific problem is that unregulated
flow measurement on Californian groundwater wells allows for underground aquifers to be emptied at
an unsustainable rate.
Background For many farmers without riparian or senior water rights, the only option to get water is
through wells that tap into underground aquifers. As farmers pull more water out of the ground, the
water level declines and wells must be dug deeper in order to retrieve water, known as overdraft.
Overdraft can lead to seawater intrusion, which is the movement of ocean water into fresh
groundwater, causing contamination of the groundwater by salt. Another common side effect

Purpose Of Corporal Punishment
Corporal Punishment is the intentional act of disciplining by inflicting physical pain as retribution for
an offense or wrongdoing. The purpose of corporal punishment is to prevent the offense or
wrongdoing from happening again by instilling or associating fear with these undesired acts. Corporal
punishment may be divided into three main types: parental or domestic corporal punishment, school
corporal punishment and judicial corporal punishment which closely related to prison corporal
punishment. Quite a few people support corporal punishment as a valid form of education. On the
other hand, there is also a large number of people who denounce corporal punishment as cruel and

In the 1970s an annual average of 335 adults were sentenced to corporal punishment only. Whipping
was used more extensively to chastise juveniles, but official statistics were not kept.
However, I believed that corporal punishment is a cruel and inhumane behavior. Corporal punishment
can lower self esteem to both the punisher and punishee, and may have longer term psychological
impact too. Also, there are other means of education that are effective too. A common alternative is to
educate why the action was wrong to the point of invoking empathy or shame. Moreover, those people
receiving punishment are more like to be instilled with rage and hostility even into adulthood.
Corporal punishment trains children to be violent to other children and educates them that it is an
acceptable means of education. This will carry on into adulthood too. In addition, for corporal
punishment to typically continue working, more punishment, pain, or force maybe be necessary. As a
result, child abuse typically starts as corporal punishment. According to Impairing Education, a report

Martin Luther s Indulgences
In the 15th century, Luther looked into the practices of the church, specifically their indulgences, and
was outraged by what he found. Luther strongly believed that the Bible was the religious authority and
that faith was responsible for the results, not humans. One may not rely on the Pope to fix their
salvation, but must rely on God and the Bible. Luther believed that the Pope was overreaching his
authority and by selling indulgences, society, and the political and economic organizations were
challenged.
When we take a look at the background, we understand what it was that Martin Luther was standing
up for. According to our textbook, Johann Tetzel was commissioned to sell indulgences in Germany
by Pope Leo X, which did not immediately affect Martin Luther, however the prince of each province
had the right to allow or deny their sale in his territory (Campbell 306). While these new indulgences

Although there had been multiple reformers in the Catholic Church before Martin Luther, none had
threatened the unity of the church. Luther gained support by finding like minded people who were as
outraged as he was over the corruption of the church. Within two weeks time the Theses had spread
like wildfire, and was eventually heard throughout all of Europe. This shows the unending diligence
and determination that Luther had to get his message out to the world.
The use of indulgences in the 1500s led to Martin Luther s attacks on Catholic Church and, as
Campbell explained, the Protestant Reformation. The attacks on the Church were responsible for
political and economic change and affected the makeup of the clergy. If Luther had not realized all of

The Transcontinental Railroad network connected the East and the West coasts; it was completed on
May 10, 1869. It increased America s imports and exports, as well as generated a national interest in
tourism; however, the construction of such project encountered a series of issues. These ranged from
corruption, the reluctant choice to hire Chinese workers and environmental obstacles. Thanks to the
vision of some individuals and the authorization of President Abraham Lincoln, the Transcontinental
Railroad became a reality; once the project was completed it connected the entire country and
increased production for both the Pacific and the Atlantic. Thirty years after the first locomotives

Texas might command $40 at Sedalia, [Missouri]. As a result, the era of cowboys roaming through the

Analysis Of The Film The Prince Of Egypt
The Film, The Prince of Egypt is a not a very accurate copy when compared to the story of exodus
from the Bible. The 1998 Dreamworks production The Prince of Egypt was created to follow the
remarkable story of Moses, Leading his people from slavery but was changed by the directors to give
it some originality. The setting, the characters and the storylines are some of the things that have been
changed in the animated story. Therefore the Dreamworks Pictures film is inaccurate and does not
flow along the same page as the Biblical story of Exodus.
Firstly, when compared, The settings In the Dreamworks production differ from the ones in the
Biblical account. The directors have made this change to add some excitement to some of the settings.
The way how the Nile has been portrayed in the movie, Vary from the Bible because the Bible tells us
that Moses had been placed in a basket among some reeds, But in the movie, Moses gets placed in the
basket and the Nile takes him away. He just misses all kinds of dangers, From hippos and crocodiles
to the Egyptian fishing nets. The reason the director did this massive change was to make the scene
more exciting and to capture the audience. The Burning bush s description is different in the Bible
than how it is portrayed in the movie. In the Bible, the burning bush is on top of a mountain called
Horeb but In the movie it is in a cave where God calls to him. The director did this because he wanted

The Positive Effects Of Advertising Effects On Women
Advertising Effects on Women Advertising has a huge effect on how women perceive their own
bodies, good or bad, but mostly bad. The media has been using models that are portrayed with the thin
ideal, the fetishization of thin bodied women, for so long and it has really taken a toll on women
viewers. This paper describes the many problems and ramifications that advertisements centered on
thin women has on people that view them. It seems like it would be commonsense to make an
advertisement effective so that people buy or view the product advertised, but that is not always the
case. An advertisement should have a positive impact on its viewers, not a negative one. Also, the
people in charge of making it should be creative but also to the point. It is important that advertisers
understand that the viewers reactions are going to determine whether the advertisement was
advantageous or not. Advertising women is a hit or miss because the women models are usually thin
and the problem is that the women viewers have a thin ideal in their minds and when they see the
advertisements, they compare themselves to the actor or model. It is important to notice the fact that
showing thin women on advertisements may be linked with women having self confidence issues and
that is not something that should be linked with advertisements that are made to gain viewers. In an
article about the role media has on women, it is stated that the media s consistent depiction of a thin
ideal leads women to see this ideal as normative, expected, and central to attractiveness (Grabe, Hyde,
Ward, 2008). This is a prime statement on why advertising effectiveness is such an issue when it
comes to this topic because women, or men in some cases, should not be watching television or
reading a magazine and come across someone that the viewer compares themselves to negatively.
Another article states that the argument against using larger models is that thinness sells, whereas
fatness does not (Dittmar Halliwell, 2004). This describes the reason that media shows thinner women
in the first place. Some think that thinner people are more appealing and therefore draws the viewers
in. A research was done to see if the size of the

Oklahoma City Bombing
THE BOMBING
Bombing On The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building
In Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building was nearly destroyed from
a nearby bomb. This bombing was the worst terrorist attack in the United States, before the nine
eleven attack in 2001. The bomb was contained in a rental truck, which was placed there by Timothy
McVeigh. McVeigh then parked the truck on the north side of the Alfred P. Murrah building. At 9:02
A.M. the bomb went off, causing massive damage to the north side of the building and three hundred
other surrounding buildings in the blast zone. The bombing had took 168 lives, 19 of those lives were
children from the daycare inside the building.
THE SUSPECTS Timothy McVeigh The main suspect of the Oklahoma City Bombing was Timothy
McVeigh. In 1988 McVeigh was sent off into the military and was put in Operation Desert Storm, and
in 1991, he was discharged. He became internationally known when he was charged with the bombing
of the Alfred p. Murrah US government building in Oklahoma City In 1995, in which 168 people died.
(Timothy McVeigh) McVeigh served a trial in Denver in 1997, and the jury of the trial found guilty.
McVeigh was then charged with conspiracy and murder. He was then put on death row.
Terry Nichols The second suspect of the Oklahoma City Bombing was Terry Nichols, who had helped
McVeigh plan the bombing. He had met McVeigh in the military and they were both discharged at

The Afterlife In The Egyptian Book Of The Dead
The Egyptian Book of the Dead refers to a collection of ancient papyri and scrolls used for funerary,
ritual purposes in the ancient Egyptian world. Its purpose and accessibility has evolved across the
centuries, from its first known use in the Old Kingdom c.1240 BCE until the final days of its
production in the second century CE. The Book of the Dead is not actually a completed book , but
rather it is a collation of the various instructions gathered from the tombs of Pharaohs, priests, high
ranking officials and the social elite. Although the most important spells were originally reserved for
the upper class, eventually The Book of the Dead became popularised among society and by the New
Kingdom was generally common among funerary ceremonies. There are around 192 magic spells
contained in the Book, many containing subsections and all of them varying in length and detail. Each
spell pertains to a specific step in the passage through the Duat (the Underworld) into the afterlife. The

This is because the texts were originally only created for a specific individual, such as a Pharaoh, and
this therefore led to many variations between the spells. It is only in the 26th dynasty, known as the
Saite period, where a process of standardisation began to take place, and there is a certain organisation
of the Book of the Dead into chapters. Generally, the Book is divided into four sections: Chapters 1 16
explain the descent into the underworld; chapters 17 63 detail the origin of the gods and the
reanimation of the mummified body; chapters 64 129 describe the deceased s journey across the sky
with the morning sun as a blessed dead , and the judgment of Osiris; and chapters 130 189 describe

Essay about Taser Use Guidelines
1. Philosophy
There has recently been a demand for the use of less than lethal weapons in the community, and
country at large. To meet this demand, the Asheville Police Department will be adopting the use of
Tasers. Though Tasers are potentially lethal, they can be used more safely that a handgun, yet are more
incapacitating than chemical spray. The use of Tasers will be explained with training as technology
and laws progress. The most important thing is that the use of Tasers always falls within the law. Any
actions taken should be proportionate to the situation, and the use of force should be no more than
what is absolutely necessary. Officers must be prepared to show that they acted reasonably and justly.
They must stay ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A specialist will also be hired to inform the department of new technological advances, and these will
be taken into consideration during any training. Revised training will also be considered annually,
based on the event of aforementioned new developments. Training will focus on dispelling myths
about the use and effect of Tasers, communication with the community concerning their use, and their
place in the force continuum.
3. Scope of Operation
Much dispute has arisen over the place of Tasers in the use of force continuum. Training will address
this issue more thoroughly, but the policy of this department will be that Tasers fall into the category
of impact weapons. They are to be considered possibly lethal, and fall between the category
containing canines, chemical agents and batons, and the category of lethal force. They are to be used
only when a suspect is being actively aggressive towards an officer, and when the use of a lower force
weapon is deemed unsafe for the attending officer(s). Medical issues are a concern when using Tasers.
When a suspect has the spike of the Taser implanted in them, they must be given medical attention
immediately after being restrained to remove the spikes and assess any possible injuries. Certain
people must be given special considerations, including the elderly, the mentally disabled, the very
young, and pregnant women (an inclusion in the very young). People falling under these

The Role Of Posttranslational Mofication In Archaea
The role of posttranslational modification (PTM) in the diverse environments of archaea diversifies
with the individual archaea. There are over 300,000 PTMs across about 5500 species of organisms.
One such PTM is reversible phosphorylation. This activity involves the activity of protein kinases and
phosphatases. Protein kinases move the γ phosphate group to another transcription factor or protein
and protein phosphatases remove a phosphate group. Reversible phosphorylation is ubiquitous in the
three domains of life and was first demonstrated around 1950 by Krebbs and Fischer in rabbit muscle
tissue. It was later demonstrated by Wang and Koshland (1978) in Salmonela typhimerium and finally

Esser and colleagues also found that Tyrosine , Serine and Threonine phosphorylation are
commonalities in eukaryotes and archaea. A group of protein kinases called Hanks type kinases are
classified according to function. The kinases that phosphorylate Serine and Threonine are the most
common these are referred to in the article as STK s. STK s require autophosphorylation like other
TCS but rely on a manganese ion and substrates such as Casein and bovine serum albumen for cell
growth. Esser and colleagues cite a study by Wang et al 2010 using Sulfolobus tokodaii strain 7. This
study by Wang and colleagues shows the importance of the Manganese ion and four other amino acids
when either of them are mutated.
The function of eSTK s involve activation of the gene flaB. Once activated a complex of two protein
kinases and a phosphatase (ArnABC) along with ArnD, function in regulating motility. In a study by
Reimann et al 2012 ArnC was deleted and this resulted in sparse amounts of cell motility. However
deletion of ArnD proved to increase motility to a hyper motile state. This deletion study shows how

The Case for Contamination, by Kwame Anthony Appiah
In the article, The Case for Contamination , by Kwame Anthony Appiah, the author focused on
globalization and its effects on the world. He stressed how new innovations and traditions, rooted
from modernization, are essentially contaminating age old customs and values. Appiah used examples
from his personal experiences to illustrate the shift from traditional customs to modern practices
within cultures. Although the author explained how globalization adversely affects traditional values
and cultures, he also stressed the importance of free will and that ultimately, the people choose which
course of action globalization will take on humanity. Though that may be true, the fact still remains
that the world is being contaminated with new, modern innovations and values, and globalization is
negatively affecting society.
The world consists of almost 200 countries. Within those countries, you find millions of people from
all shapes, colors, and sizes. They may look different, think differently, wear peculiar clothing, and
even speak another language, but as humans, though we may fear it, we find that exciting
experiencing something outside of our comfort zone. With globalization, new technologies and
ideologies become prevalent and traditional practices become almost extinct. In the article, Appiah
discussed his first hand experience on the effects of globalization in his home country of Ghana. He

The Gospel Of John The Baptist
Everyone, who has studied the Gospel, has heard of John the Baptist. He had prepared the way for
Jesus ministry long before He came to earth. He was just a man, who baptized other people, who
believed. There is a lot more to John the Baptist though.
1. It is written that John the Baptist was to fulfill a prophesy mentioned from Isaiah about a messenger
being sent ahead, and a voice crying out in the wilderness (Isaiah 40:3 5.)
2. Malachi also prophesied about John in Malachi 3:1.
3. Zechariah and Elizabeth was a couple in their old age. They were just ordinary people who lived in
the course of Abia, until Gabriel (or an angel of the Lord, mentioned in this section,) had foretold of
their son s birth John the Baptist (Luke 1:11 17.) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many people were brought to Jesus through John (Matthew 3:5 6.)
10. In Matthew 3, John the Baptist preached in the wilderness of Judea (Matthew 3:1.) It is stated that
John the Baptist lived as a timid man and was straight to the point. My assumption is he did not enjoy
preaching in a town. He probably would feel very uncomfortable, so he chose to teach in the
wilderness.
11. John the Baptist is the one who baptized Jesus (Matthew 3:13 17.)
12. John didn t intend to baptize Jesus. Immediately, he recognized that Jesus was sinless. John the
Baptist knew Jesus was God s prophesied Son, who he had been teaching about. In fact, John the
Baptist went as far as to say, I should be the one getting baptized by you! (Matthew 3:14.) What an
experience it must have been to baptize Jesus!
13. John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River (Mark 1:9.)
14. According to John 3:27 30, the people, who John the Baptist taught, thought he was the Messiah.
15. John was humble and said I m not worthy of even carrying His sandals (Matthew 3:11.)
16. Not only did the people think John the Baptist was Christ, but they also had a few other ideas
about who he was. Also, they thought he was Elijah or another prophet. All they knew is he was filled
with miraculous power. People had no idea that the power wasn t coming from him, but from God
within him (John 1:21.)

David Malouf s Remembering Babylon And William Golding s...
David Malouf s Remembering Babylon and William Golding s The Inheritors both explore and
criticise violent and discriminatory human nature through various techniques. Remembering Babylon
takes place in 19th Century Queensland following a young British man, Gemmy Fairley, who was
thrown overboard a ship and has grown up with aboriginals for sixteen years, and his relationship with
the new settlers. The Inheritors follows a journey of a peaceful Neanderthal tribe who are slowly
facing extinction due to the violent nature of the coexisting humans, kidnapping and murdering. Both
novels have criticised the impacts of human nature, how humans has developed and detached
themselves from nature and been drawn to violence and discrimination. Malouf and Golding employ a
range of literary techniques to express these ideas.
Malouf and Golding s narrative perspectives vary to portray a unique perspective on the issues of
human nature. Malouf writes in third person omniscient with a narrator, however changes the focus to
specific characters throughout each chapter, becoming third person limited. This allows readers to
understand the mind set of the settlers surrounding Gemmy s arrival however for the perspective to
remain unbiased. This helps display issues of human nature in an unprejudiced way as Ned Corcoran,
resident of the settlement Gemmy is brought to, thought that Gemmy was trading on the residents
goodwill (39) rather than having a positive influence on the settlement. This

The Industrial Revolution Of The Middle East
For millennia mankind has exhausted endless amounts of energy contemplating the eternally
complicated system of war. From Gangas Khan to America s involvement in the Middle East, all
successful generals, military leaders, and conquerors have found commonality in their zealous
emphasis on, and desire for, possessing the most technologically advanced forms of weaponry. Such a
desire was not ignored in America nor England during the Industrial Revolution, but, rather, was seen
by many as an opportune investment during a time of extraordinarily progressive innovation. With this
in mind the Industrial Revolution became heavily involved with the advancement of weaponry,
forever changing the face of war unlike any era before it.
The industrial revolution was a time of great change for both Europe and America. Inventions during
this time (such as the cotton gin, the steam engine, sewing machine) stemmed from a seemingly never
ending flow of revelation in thought. Thus, paving the way for a more advanced and technological
society. This was a time of great accomplishment. With the drastic advancement of economic and
technological innovation came the traumatic realization of necessary social adaptation; a change that
did not come easy for such a progressive society. The upper class became more wealthy as the number
of impoverished citizens increased.
Britain set an appropriate stage for the industrial revolution to take place. Britain was a politically
stable society and was the

We began our activities with spaghetti flowers, which involved the use of spaghetti and (edible)

enjoyed making marshmallow creatures and scenes just as much as everyone else. This acitivity was
designed to make everyone aware of the strengths which they possess, and I found that many of the

creative time using color change markers. Everyone made name tags for their doors, and some of
them, being incredibly generous, made cards for their friends who were not in the hospital that
evening.

were occurring simultaneously. Therefore, I only conducted a couple of activities such as the

Tree Stump Removal
Tree stumps are an inevitable part of owning property with trees. After a tree is downed, homeowners
often decide to leave the stumps in the ground, either to reduce tree removal costs, or clean up efforts.
However, doing so can actually end up costing you more in landscaping and home maintenance. Here
are 5 reasons homeowners should consider a tree stump removal service in Wilmington.
Stumps Can be Safety Hazards
Making sure the home and surrounding areas are free from safety issues should be high on any
property owner s priority list. As innocent as low cut stumps may appear, they can actually create
hazards for both adults and children because they are easily hidden behind shrubs and grass.

Termites, carpenter ants. and other wood boring insects quickly move into the rotting stumps. Insects
play a major role in decomposing and are vital to a health ecosystem; however, insects can spread into
surrounding trees, and buildings, causing thousands of dollars worth of property damage. Removing
the stump reduces these pests and the risk to the home.
Saplings Can Grow From The Stump
Particularly important when the tree was removed due to space or drainage issues, when left in the
yard, stumps may grow new saplings. New growth, while slow and steady, will revert the yard to the
same circumstances that led to the removal to begin with. Removing the stump minimizes the risks of
a new tree causing the same problems.
Difficult Landscaping Upkeep
Stumps create unique challenges when it comes to maintenance and landscaping. Mowing and weed
control can become difficult, especially for large and oddly shaped stumps. Simple upkeep can also
take a lot longer than if the stump was removed, causing property owners to abandon other projects to
maintain the space around the stump, or allow the stump to become over grown, which posses a safety

deportees and her children, leaving her barely no food to eat. It was possible to consider that Lina

Nevertheless, this book gave me a great impulse with detailed description of life in imprisonment.
This made me think deeply about the ignominious actions took during the World War, as well as those

definitely feel the power of love particularly in those moments when the deportees were struggling to
survive and going through the toughest conflicts. When Elena died, everyone, even the mean old bald
man pleaded for her life and bade farewells filled with love. Though Elena had died eventually, Lina
and Jonas survived the life at the unbelievably freezing camp and that was maybe because of the love

Good English And Bad By Bill Bryson
Standard English In his article Good English and Bad , Bill Bryson focus on how English rules were
changed throughout history. He stresses that people should not worry about how to use English
correctly too much because English comes from Latin and it is not necessary to follow Latin rules in
English. While in the article Why Good English is Good for You , John Simon stresses how English
must be used in a proper way by following its rules. Simon believes that good English can express one
s idea clearly and people should spread it. Although Bryson and Simon have different perspectives on
the way how people use English, the requirement of standard English rules should vary depending on
different situations. The use of standard English rules should be variable depending on who use it,
such as immigrants in the United States. As we know, most immigrants native languages are not

Pepsi Cola As A Carbonated Beverage Essay
Pepsi Cola is a carbonated beverage that is sold by PepsiCo. It is sold in vending machines, stores and
restaurants. This beverage was first produced in the 1890s by Caleb Bradham in New Bern, North
Carolina. The brand was first trademarked in 1903 and seeing that it is still around today in 2016 i
would classify pepsi as a style. I made that conclusion by seeing their sales my go up and down but
pepsi was here long before me and will be here long after me. Pepsi cola is elastic and in an industry
that is mainly dominated by Coca Cola. Although Pepsi and Coke are in constant competition with one
another to gain and maintain the same customers. Seeing that 95% of the United States drinks soft
drinks. This shows the large number of potential customers Pepsi Cola could gain. Pepsi s advertising
constantly has to stay current to appeal to the younger generation. Their target market would be
generation X but also has a large focus on the 12 to 18 year old demographic. At an early stage, Pepsi
comprehended market division and the significance of having shoppers to promote to that aren t bolted
into a particular item yet. Pepsi acknowledged in the 1940s that African Americans were an untapped
specialty advertise. At the time Pepsi could pick up piece of the overall industry by focusing on and
publicizing towards African Americans which they have kept on doing. Today Pepsi showcases its

Has Pos-Fordism Replaced Fordism in Capitalist Society
The beginning of the 20th century when Henry Ford first time put his genius idea of dividing works
into separate parts by using assemble line into practice was marked as the start of massive production.
It is also the debut for Taylorism in the massive production area. After that such method of massive
standard production was named as Foedism. Based on the scientific management theory that comes
from Taylorism, the manufacturing area began to be dominated by Fordism. However, since the 1960s
when a series of new technologies appeared, manufacturing did not have to be formed in a fixed
method. A more flexible production method, which was named as Post Fordism turned up. From then
on a controversy appears between two groups of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since it is such a unusual idea to the dominant opinions, theories of post Fordism have suffered some
strong criticism. Pollert(1988), one who is opposed to the opinion that Taylorism and Fordism have
been replaced by post Fordism , argues that theories of flexibility are too simple to believe and at
times incorrect. She says that the comments, which indicate the Fordism once dominated the
production method are incorrect. She otherwise, points out that the flexibility to produce specialized
products are nothing new and the key of Japanese business success is cheap, well designed and
reliable products rather than a small amount of specialized products. Thus, flexible specialization and
post Fordism was not that successful. To the issue about relationships between flexibility and skill
levels, she maintains a different view that flexibility at times also leads to some opposite effects. In
addition, Pollert(1988) also worried about introducing new technology or new management proposals
into practices, since it may cause conflicts between workers and management. Apart from Pollert,
Stephen Wood(1989) also questions whether the flexibility has led to a greater requirement of skills.
And he doubts that the people who support the post Fordism theories exaggerate their cases. Just as
Hall(1988) claims that there is still no evidence that

The experiences, strength, drive, and ruthlessness of Agha Mohammad Khan aided to secure his long

Ṭahmāsb II of the Ṣafawiyyān house and was thus succeeded in power by his eldest son Mohammad

alliances which are present in the world are OneWorld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance. These alliances of
airlines have covered almost two third of world air traffic industry and the major contribution in this is
Star Alliance. The strategic alliances on the part of the airlines are done because of many advantages
which not only organizations reap but also the other stakeholders which are involved in this type of
alliances. This research paper is evaluation of why the strategic alliances are important and why the

Learning, specialization and fix cost distribution can spread over larger output with economies of
scales (Albers, Koch and Ruff, 2005). Three strategies were opted as motivation by the airlines to
create an alliance (i) mergers and acquisitions, (ii) setting up low cost carriers and (iii) air alliances.
Air alliance was considered as the most sustainable strategy by the Star airline. Through the strategic
alliance, the airline had an opportunity to expand and become large but at the same time they can
lower their cost by creating the competitive advantage that is why Start Alliance opted for this option
(Cojohari, 2015).
2.2 Marketing and Branding
Airline behavior could not be explained effectively with changing cost structure. In the bottom line of
any alliance marketing strategies and demand response are important. With Star Alliance, the airline
can offer their consumers large and denser global network of airlines with smooth connections among
airlines. Airlines have demands with competitive prices in Star Alliance due to economies of scope,
scale and density. In Star Alliance partners are able to offer better products and services due to airlines
increased capacity to retain and generate passengers (Cullen, Johnson and Sakano, 2000).

The Global Population Is Ageing At An Alarming Rate
The global population is ageing at an alarming rate, with over eight precent of the world s population
over 65 and this number is expected to double by the year 2030 (International Federation for Social
Workers, 2012). For Huffnung et. al. (2010), late adulthood encompasses the years following 65 and is
characterised by a period of substantial decline in functioning including physical, psychological and
social. Whilst dementia is not an inevitable part of the ageing process, it has however due to the
ageing population become more prevalent within society, especially within remote aboriginal
communities (Brodaty Cumming 2010 cited in Jones Creedy 2012, p.44). Dementia does not refer to a
single disease rather, a group of symptoms specifically retaining to the cognitive impairment of
individual which later progresses to effect both physical and the social function of sufferers.
Developed by Engel (1977), the biopyschosocial model can be used to examine the progression of this
disease during late adulthood. Thus, late adulthood is seen as a period of significant change with
individual facing unique challenges in regards to development.
Dementia is an emerging global health problem, with the prevalence of this disease estimated to sit at
twenty five million people as of 2003 (Arkles et al., 2014, p.6). However, due to the ageing population
these figures are expected to double every twenty years and is estimated that by the year 2040 that

Examples Of Choice In Tangererine
Choices of Tangerine
Have you ever met a monster disguised as a super star? In the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor, Erik
is a senior at Lake Windsor High School. Erik cares very much about the Erik Fisher Football Dream
or the E.F.F.D. He is a star to his family, but a monster to his little brother, Paul Fisher, whom he treats
like trash. Erik also chooses to slap Tino, force Arthur to hit Luis, and force Castor to spray paint in
Paul s eyes, which affects Paul in a dreadful way.
The choice made by Erik that affects Paul, was the choice for Erik to force Arthur to hit Luis on his
head with blackjack, killing him. This made Paul angry and breathless. According to the text, I looked

this. Instead of running away from them if your scared, you could teach that person the effects of your
choices about yourself or somebody else. This is important because this happens in everyday life and
you need to not just focus on yourself, but on others and to watch what your choices can do in the

measurement devices have been placed inside of football helmets so that the head acceleration

Human surrogates Human surrogates include dummies and computational models. Surrogates allow
for investigation of impacts that could not be performed on human or animal models, while
additionally standardizing the contact phenomena. This allows for the differences in response to
impact to be said to be due to the treatment conditions or impact characteristics, rather than the
variations between the subject being impacted. Dummies can be made of a variety of materials. What

The Brigance Diagnostic Inventory Of Early Development II
The Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Early Development II was written by Albert H. Brigance
Frances Page Gloscoe. The IED II was published by Curriculum Associates, Inc. in 1978 2004. The
test is administered individually with the age range of birth 7 years old. This test was created to
monitor a child s development. Because it was not a high stakes test, there was more room for error.
The IED II was translated into Spanish. Spanish tests were given to 8.6% of participants but since
scores were never compared to the English version of the test, there is no confirmation of reliability or
validity (Davis pg 9). Also, the Spanish version of the test is not publicly available. The purpose of the
Brigance Diagnostic IED II is to determine readiness for school, track developmental progress,
provide a range of scores needed for documenting eligibility for special education services, and enable
a comparison of children s skills within and across developmental domains in order to view strengths
and weaknesses and to determine entry points for instruction (Davis 1). It also helps in assisting with
program evaluation. The subtests in the IED II include 11 areas of development. These areas include
preambulatory motor skills, gross motor skills, fine motor, self help skills, speech and language skills,
general knowledge/comprehension, social emotional development, readiness, basic reading skills,
basic math for criterion referenced and manuscript writing (Davis pg 2). The

  • 2. Essay Jack the Ripper AP English IV Book Report Jack the Ripper Jack the Ripper was a notorious serial killer, whom some believe never even existed at all. From August to November 1888, Jack the Ripper terrorized the East End of London by being responsible for the death and mutilation of at least seven female prostitutes. The destitute East End is also known as the White Chapel district of London, England. A few of the prostitutes were targeted as they were leaving brothels in and around the White Chapel district. Jack the Ripper seemed to be targeting drunken women who had no sense of time or what they were doing (Jack the Ripper). Jack the Ripper is just a name given to an unidentified late 19th century murderer. No one actually knows who this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rest of the responsibility lies with the Ripper. He may have been a sexual serial killer of a type all too common in the 1990 s, but he was also bent on terrifying a city and making the whole world take notice of him by leaving his horribly mutilated victims in plain sight. Lastly, the Ripper was never caught and it is the mysteries surrounding this killer that both add to the romance of the story and creating an intellectual puzzle that people still want to solve ( Ebsco host). It is unclear just how many women the Ripper killed. It is generally accepted that he killed five, though some have written that he murdered only four while others say seven or more. The public, press, and even many junior police officers believed that the Ripper was responsible for nine slayings. The five that are generally accepted are: 1. Mary Ann (Polly) Nichols murdered Friday, August 31 1888. 2. Annie Chapman, murdered Saturday , September 8, 1888. 3. Elizabeth Stride, murdered Sunday, September 30, 1888. 4. Catharine Eddowes, also murdered that same date. 5. Mary Jane (Marie Jeanette) Kelly, murdered Friday, November 9, 1888. Besides these five there are good reasons to believe that the first victim was really Martha Tabram who was murdered Tuesday, august 7, 1888, and there are important considerations for questioning whether Stride was a Ripper victim. As to the actual number of women that the Ripper killed, there is no simple ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. How Do Antitrust Policies Help Or Hurt Society To what extent to antitrust policies help or hurt society? Please explain and specify what clauses (at least 2 or 3 clauses) within the Sherman and Clayton Antitrust acts have protected/hurt consumers and business from the ills of monopolies. Antitrust policies are mot harmful to society than they are helpful. The Antitrust laws that were apparently focused on the restriction of monopolies for the safeguarding public welfare and just prices have instead been used by the government in ways that are more harmful to consumers than beneficial. More often than not, these laws obstruct innovation and impede competition and free trade. The main purpose of the laws is to ensure that large corporations do not take advantage of consumers, but in the process of maintaining this order, the government may be restricting companies that have the potential of being beneficial for society with fair prices in the long run. The Antitrust Acts can be seen as more of an effort to maintain and keep the doors open of businesses that otherwise would not be able to withstand the competition of more efficient businesses. Therefore, they can be seen more of a restriction on the development of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regulation can be seen as an interference with innovation and creativity. The only possible and sound way to determine the best move for a firm is through the wisdom gained with experience and intimate knowledge on the subject. • 4. The Components Of Social Work The main element that drew me to the profession of social work was the diverse opportunities available. Social work is a very flexible field that consists of many different components such as family and child welfare, poverty and inequality, and substance abuse/ addiction. The main component of social work that interests me is working with people who have disabilities, mental and/or physical. According to our textbook about 11.3% of social workers with bachelor s work in this field (Cox, Tice, Long, 2016, pg. 17). I discovered that I was interested in this component of social work after a traumatic experience that left me with a disability. Component of Social Work A disability is usually defined as a decline in function that can either be temporary or permanent. There are two main groupings of disabilities; categorial and functional. Categorial disabilities include mental illnesses and sensory damage which often leads to developmental delays. In comparison, functional disabilities cause limitations during physical activity. Individuals can also suffer from more than one disability which is known as a co occurring disability (Cox et al., 2016, pg. 159). Social workers often view disabilities in three types; developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and mental disabilities. A developmental disability is a long term disability that is typically diagnosed before age 22. These disabilities include Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Down Syndrome (Cox et al., 2016, pg. ... • 5. Synthesis Essay On Huckleberry Finn Huck Finn Synthesis Essay: The Great Race Debate Slavery stretches its cruel branches into decades of history. According to the American Anti slavery and Civil Rights Timeline on Ushistory.org, the portuguese were the first to negotiate a slave trade in 1472. The portuguese slave trade agreement also included ivory and gold as well as slaves. In 1610, the first ship carrying slaves touched down in the new world. Four years after that the British Colony of Massachusetts became the first colony to recognize slavery as a legal institution. For as long as slavery has been a legal institution abolitionists have been advocating for the freedom and rights of slaves. In 1671 George Fox, the founder of the quakers, talked out against the institution of slavery in the new world. In 1861 America ripped itself apart fighting a war, known as the American Civil War, that would ultimately abolish slavery in the United States of America. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain was written and published after the end of the civil war, but is set forty to fifty years before the beginning of the civil war. At this time it was socially acceptable to own slaves, especially in the south where Huckleberry Finn lives. It was not uncommon for slaves to be beaten or whipped if their work was unsatisfactory. Slaves were treated as people without rights and property to their white owners. Today the transatlantic slave trade has left its mark on America. There are still white supremacist groups, like the KKK, who believe that they are the superior race and black people should be eradicated. Racial profiling of black people has been an increasing issue to. Black people are getting killed and sent to jail for crimes that if a white person were to commit, the white person would receive a lesser sentence. Today racism is still running rampant in America. Many schools have banned teachers from teaching on Twain s Huckleberry Finn for various reasons. One of those reasons is that Twain uses the word nigger, and he uses it to many times. At the time that this book was written, slaves and free black people were called niggers. So Twain in his writing is being politically correct when writing about Jim and the other slaves ... • 6. Liberal Feminism vs. Radical Feminism Essay Liberal Feminism and Radical Feminism The goal of feminism as both a social movement and political movement is to make women and men equal not only culturally, but socially and legally. Even though there are various types of feminism that focus on different goals and issues, the ultimate end to feminism is abolishing gender inequality that has negative effects on women in our society. The issues and goals that a feminist may have are dependent on the social organization or the type of economic structure that is present. However, an ultimate end (a goal, achievement and/or accomplishment) would have to be social equality between men and women. This would mean the elimination of bias and discrimination towards women and the elimination ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also argue that gender inequality in not the outcome of choices, personal attributes or relationships with others, but structural sources such as workplaces, schools, and the government as they are unable to provide women with the same resources as men. This includes healthcare, education, equal wages and an overall balance between men and women. On the other hand, radical feminism is a form of resistance feminism, which means their issues primarily lie within patriarchy or men s dominance towards women. They argue that patriarchy is found wherever men and women are in contact with each other. They believe that patriarchy is almost impossible to abolish because to be superior is an attribute that most men have acquired of is already built into them. And whether it s consciously or subconsciously, these traits are applied into their privileges that Western society has given them (because they are men) and displayed within all the different aspects and occupations in their lives. The main view of liberal feminism is that all people are created equal by God and deserve equal rights. These types of feminists believe that oppression only exists because of the way men and women are socialized by society, which supports patriarchy and keeps men in powerful positions. The vicious cycle of anxiety and worry interferes with relationships, careers, and education, and often leads to depression. The Pitch: The debate about the difference in leadership style of women and men continues to attract attention since women make strides into leadership position dominated mainly by men. Men have long been holding these leadership roles and have defined styles accepted by people. Therefore, it is not surprising that women are usual the focus in terms of the discussion on gender difference in leadership styles. There seems to be great disagreement about the behaviour of women and men actually performing such roles (Eagly, 2001). This disagreement on this focus can be divided into two groups. In other words, communal aspects are more presented in a transformational leadership style. While transformational leaders are portrayed to have a personalized view of each co worker and they often take into account their colleagues individual needs and development (Eagly, 2003). Based on Eagly and Johannesen Schmidt theory, female and male forms of leadership and empowerment seem to be different. Communal and transformational characteristics are more presented by women than men. So some women exhibited an open and participatory leadership style. Additionally, women are perceived to work harder and take their work more seriously, and women are less concern with salary than the recognition of a good done of job (Alvesson, 2009). The focus of the debate concentrates on: In what context leadership style shows a similarity or a slight difference between women and men and is there a specific female form of leadership? This documentary shows the different leadership styles of women by case studies. It will investigate whether or perhaps there is a specific female style of leadership preferred by a majority of women. The Training Of A Neural Networks In order to have a better understanding of the mechanism used in the prediction process, we need to know what are the stopping conditions, as this process involves a finite number of iterations known a priori. It has been previously proved one of the problems that occur during the training of a neural networks is overfitting towards the input data, which generates low quality predictions [56]. In order to reduce this tendency, the early stopping criteria has been formulated. This involves dividing the input set in three subsets [57]: training set, used to estimte the weights; testing set, used to assess the prediction sample and validation set, which is an accuracy indicator of the prediction sample, although it is not used during the ... Application using neural networks for the real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) prediction This is an empirical example which has the role of highlighting the differences between a neural network and a linear regression model. Lamy Robert estimated a linear regression model to predict the growth of real GDP in Canada [59]. His model explains 82% of the GDP variation in the period 1978 1998. The coefficient obtained are statistically significant so, he the model can be used to predict the values of the GDP for different periods. His model contains six independent variables, which are: R_(t 1) is the quarterly growth of the Canadian Financial Index at t 1; F_t is the employment growth rate at time t; F_(t 1) is the employment growth rate at t 1; B_t is the consumer confidence index; d_(t 9) is the first difference of the long term real interest rate at time t 9 (9 month before time t); d_(t 3) is the first difference of the government budget balance as a share of GDP, at time t 3 (3 months before time t). • 11. Water Is The Backbone Of Civilization Essay Water is the backbone of civilization as it determines which societies rise or fall. In the modern era, California has grown to be an agricultural powerhouse, producing nearly half of the nation s fruits, nuts and vegetables (Parsons, 2014). In recent years, the state has faced an exceptional drought, causing the state to enact various emergency water conservation regulations. For many farmers throughout the state, whose main source of water is from underground wells, irrigations of fields have continued at a steep price. In order to keep irrigating their fields, farmers have had to dig deeper in underground wells to reach the water level in underground aquifers. Currently, the state consumes two million acre feet more than is replenished annually (SWRCB, 2012). The general problem is that many groundwater wells do not have flow measurement. The specific problem is that unregulated flow measurement on Californian groundwater wells allows for underground aquifers to be emptied at an unsustainable rate. Background For many farmers without riparian or senior water rights, the only option to get water is through wells that tap into underground aquifers. As farmers pull more water out of the ground, the water level declines and wells must be dug deeper in order to retrieve water, known as overdraft. Overdraft can lead to seawater intrusion, which is the movement of ocean water into fresh groundwater, causing contamination of the groundwater by salt. Another common side effect ... Corporal punishment may be divided into three main types: parental or domestic corporal punishment, school corporal punishment and judicial corporal punishment which closely related to prison corporal punishment. Whipping was used more extensively to chastise juveniles, but official statistics were not kept. However, I believed that corporal punishment is a cruel and inhumane behavior. Corporal punishment can lower self esteem to both the punisher and punishee, and may have longer term psychological impact too. Also, there are other means of education that are effective too. A common alternative is to educate why the action was wrong to the point of invoking empathy or shame. Moreover, those people receiving punishment are more like to be instilled with rage and hostility even into adulthood. Corporal punishment trains children to be violent to other children and educates them that it is an acceptable means of education. This will carry on into adulthood too. In addition, for corporal punishment to typically continue working, more punishment, pain, or force maybe be necessary. As a result, child abuse typically starts as corporal punishment. • 13. Martin Luther s Indulgences In the 15th century, Luther looked into the practices of the church, specifically their indulgences, and was outraged by what he found. Luther strongly believed that the Bible was the religious authority and that faith was responsible for the results, not humans. One may not rely on the Pope to fix their salvation, but must rely on God and the Bible. Luther believed that the Pope was overreaching his authority and by selling indulgences, society, and the political and economic organizations were challenged. When we take a look at the background, we understand what it was that Martin Luther was standing up for. According to our textbook, Johann Tetzel was commissioned to sell indulgences in Germany by Pope Leo X, which did not immediately affect Martin Luther, however the prince of each province had the right to allow or deny their sale in his territory (Campbell 306). Luther gained support by finding like minded people who were as outraged as he was over the corruption of the church. Within two weeks time the Theses had spread like wildfire, and was eventually heard throughout all of Europe. This shows the unending diligence and determination that Luther had to get his message out to the world. The use of indulgences in the 1500s led to Martin Luther s attacks on Catholic Church and, as Campbell explained, the Protestant Reformation. The attacks on the Church were responsible for political and economic change and affected the makeup of the clergy. If Luther had not realized all of the social, political, and economic failing that the church was causing for society, there may not have been a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It increased America s imports and exports, as well as generated a national interest in tourism; however, the construction of such project encountered a series of issues. These ranged from corruption, the reluctant choice to hire Chinese workers and environmental obstacles. Thanks to the vision of some individuals and the authorization of President Abraham Lincoln, the Transcontinental Railroad became a reality; once the project was completed it connected the entire country and increased production for both the Pacific and the Atlantic. Some local businesses already benefited dramatically from the railroad networks; such was the case with the state of Texas, as it reentered the Union after the Civil War ended, this was because A longhorn worth $3 in Texas might command $40 at Sedalia, [Missouri]. As a result, the era of cowboys roaming through the Great Plains escorting livestock was gone, since Railroad networks presented a cheaper, quicker and more lucrative method of transporting livestock to the north. There were two companies tasked with the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad, the Union Pacific working from the East coast and the Central Pacific working from the West coast, the concept was for these two companies to meet somewhere in the middle. The 1998 Dreamworks production The Prince of Egypt was created to follow the remarkable story of Moses, Leading his people from slavery but was changed by the directors to give it some originality. The setting, the characters and the storylines are some of the things that have been changed in the animated story. Therefore the Dreamworks Pictures film is inaccurate and does not flow along the same page as the Biblical story of Exodus. Firstly, when compared, The settings In the Dreamworks production differ from the ones in the Biblical account. The directors have made this change to add some excitement to some of the settings. The way how the Nile has been portrayed in the movie, Vary from the Bible because the Bible tells us that Moses had been placed in a basket among some reeds, But in the movie, Moses gets placed in the basket and the Nile takes him away. He just misses all kinds of dangers, From hippos and crocodiles to the Egyptian fishing nets. The reason the director did this massive change was to make the scene more exciting and to capture the audience. The Burning bush s description is different in the Bible than how it is portrayed in the movie. • 16. The Positive Effects Of Advertising Effects On Women Advertising Effects on Women Advertising has a huge effect on how women perceive their own bodies, good or bad, but mostly bad. The media has been using models that are portrayed with the thin ideal, the fetishization of thin bodied women, for so long and it has really taken a toll on women viewers. This paper describes the many problems and ramifications that advertisements centered on thin women has on people that view them. It seems like it would be commonsense to make an advertisement effective so that people buy or view the product advertised, but that is not always the case. An advertisement should have a positive impact on its viewers, not a negative one. Also, the people in charge of making it should be creative but also to the point. It is important that advertisers understand that the viewers reactions are going to determine whether the advertisement was advantageous or not. Advertising women is a hit or miss because the women models are usually thin and the problem is that the women viewers have a thin ideal in their minds and when they see the advertisements, they compare themselves to the actor or model. It is important to notice the fact that showing thin women on advertisements may be linked with women having self confidence issues and that is not something that should be linked with advertisements that are made to gain viewers. In an article about the role media has on women, it is stated that the media s consistent depiction of a thin ideal leads women to see this ideal as normative, expected, and central to attractiveness (Grabe, Hyde, Ward, 2008). This is a prime statement on why advertising effectiveness is such an issue when it comes to this topic because women, or men in some cases, should not be watching television or reading a magazine and come across someone that the viewer compares themselves to negatively. Another article states that the argument against using larger models is that thinness sells, whereas fatness does not (Dittmar Halliwell, 2004). This describes the reason that media shows thinner women in the first place. Some think that thinner people are more appealing and therefore draws the viewers in. • 21. The Afterlife In The Egyptian Book Of The Dead The Egyptian Book of the Dead refers to a collection of ancient papyri and scrolls used for funerary, ritual purposes in the ancient Egyptian world. Its purpose and accessibility has evolved across the centuries, from its first known use in the Old Kingdom c.1240 BCE until the final days of its production in the second century CE. The Book of the Dead is not actually a completed book , but rather it is a collation of the various instructions gathered from the tombs of Pharaohs, priests, high ranking officials and the social elite. Although the most important spells were originally reserved for the upper class, eventually The Book of the Dead became popularised among society and by the New Kingdom was generally common among funerary ceremonies. There are over 300,000 PTMs across about 5500 species of organisms. One such PTM is reversible phosphorylation. This activity involves the activity of protein kinases and phosphatases. Protein kinases move the γ phosphate group to another transcription factor or protein and protein phosphatases remove a phosphate group. Reversible phosphorylation is ubiquitous in the three domains of life and was first demonstrated around 1950 by Krebbs and Fischer in rabbit muscle tissue.
