Lou Gehrig’s Farewell Speech Essay
Lou Gehrig s Farewell Speech Throughout the course of American history, there have been copious
amounts of famous speeches, spoken by many different people. From political figures to sports
players; these people have provided deep thoughts and great insights about who they are and the world
we live in today. Being a sports enthusiast, a memorable speech comes to my mind. Lou Gehrig s
farewell speech , given on July 4th, 1939, to more than 62,000 fans at New York City s Yankee
Stadium, has become a cornerstone in the history of baseball in America. Lou Gehrig is considered
one of the most under rated sports players of all time. Gehrig played in the same era with greats like
Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio. In Fact, Gehrig played on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Gehrig was not removed from playing baseball; rather, Gehrig took himself out, after not being able to
leg out an infield hit. Gehrig was diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease called amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig s disease); Lou Gehrig would never play baseball again. The
purpose of his farewell speech was to formally address his fans all over the world, and confirm the
rumors that Gehrig would never play baseball again. There are several different structures that could
be used to describe this speech, but the main structure is cause and effect. A lot of Gehrig s fans
believed that this unfortunate diagnosis would cause some sort of depression, anger within himself, or
withdrawal from the American people. This was not the case, however. Gehrig s first line of his
speech, Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I
consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this Earth. Clearly shows cause and effect structure.
The diagnosis of Lou Gehrig s disease did not cause Gehrig to be depressed; rather, it caused Gehrig
to be thankful for what he had. Throughout this speech, each form of rhetoric is used. The first
obvious rhetorical appeal would be Ethos. A prestigious sports figure like Lou Gehrig definitely has
ethos appeal. Lou Gehrig got the attention of thousands maybe millions of people when he gave his

Deviance in Hockey
Violence in ice hockey has been an identifying staple in the sport since the first hockey leagues
formed in the mid 1880 s, (Ice Hockey Origins, Growth and Changes in the Game). Since the modern
era of hockey, and the creation of the Stanley Cup, hockey has been viewed as one of the most violent
sports in western civilization. Clarence Campbell, former NHL President has even said that [w]ithout
violence, there would be no such thing as hockey, (Coakley). To an extent hockey is unmatched in
illegal assaults by any other sport, in both amateur and professional leagues, (Colburn). This does not
mean that the contact in other sports is not as intense as hockey, for example rugby and football are
both very violent sports, but this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This institutionalization created a different atmosphere around the entire world of sport.
Sports became something that men and women could participate in as well as small children. Because
of this universalization of sport it began to attract the attention of everyone, rather than just the
participants. With a new audience came a new set of views and interpretations of what sports were and
most sports fit into this new set of norms, and if not they adapted to fit into them. Hockey, however,
did not conform to these new norms.
Violence, fistfights specifically, in hockey are viewed as deviant because; that very type of violence is
statistically rare in institutionalized sports and it is harmful to individuals, the sport of hockey, and
society as a whole. This violence also violates the norms that society has created for competitive sport.
Because of these harms, the rarity of such violence in sports, and the violation of the norms, a negative
societal reaction forms.
One of the ways that an act can contract a deviant label is by its statistical rarity, (Bereska). Violence,
such as the fistfights seen in hockey, is a statistical rarity. Statistical rarity in this sense means that the
type of violence seen in hockey, and the volume that it is seen in hockey, is unheard of in any

Building A Room Decorating Ideas
Modern Room Decorating Ideas : How to Choose Wall Artwork
Great art can elevate a space, bring together an interior house design and add interest to a room. Art
work in your home can also communicate your style to your guests and speak to your personal
experience. However, choosing art pieces for your home can be daunting when you have no
experience in room design. Luckily, we have compiled a list of room decorating ideas that will help
you choose the right artwork for your home and its many spaces.
Don t Settle
When looking for the right pieces to fill your living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and foyer, do
not settle. Above all else, it is advisable to get out and see what s out there. Art exists in galleries, at
auctions, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Think About Your Space
Are you decorating your living room, home office, or bedroom? Spend time in the space and select the
most important and visible walls in those rooms. These walls should be considered the focal points of
your design. When choosing art for these spaces, consider the size that art will need to be in order to
take up enough visual space.
Match the size and shape of the pieces to the walls. For instance, if you have a long horizontal wall,
hang a long horizontal piece of art. In the same space, you could also hand a collection of pieces in
order to take up more horizontal space. By accentuating the height or length of the wall, you will be
making the room feel larger.
Choosing Art For Your Bedroom
When choosing art for your bedroom, it is important that you consider what it is you would like to get
out of the space. Is your bedroom a place of rest, a place to unwind, or a place for romance? The style
and mood of the art you choose should be in line with your overall plans for your bedroom space.
Because art is such an emotive tool, it is particularly important in your bedroom that the colors of the
art displayed help accomplish your bedroom s overarching theme. For example, red is the color of
passion, and although a painting that uses a large swathe of red is great for a room designated for
romance, it may not be well suited in a room designated for relaxation.

Maximus The Tragic Hero In Gladiator By Russell Crowe
In the movie titled Gladiator there is a main character named Maximus Decimus Meridus performed
by Russell Crowe, in the beginning we see how the people look at Maximus when he appears and
some have a very relieved expression on their faces while others have very happy faces. This already
tells me that Maximus is a very respected man and throughout the movie he is portrayed as a noble
man, with noble traits and a soldier who knows of no limits when it comes to protecting either his men
or his people. This has led me to believe that Maximus is the tragic hero in Gladiator, the reason being
is because according to Aristotle, a greek philosopher and scientist, there are 5 common traits to be a
tragic hero. 5 traits which Maximus meets throughout

Analysis Of Game Of Thrones
Game of Thrones is a show that I have recently started watching. I usually don t watch television
shows of this genre, but this one is very entertaining. Game of Thrones is a good fantasy drama
because of the variety of settings, character development, and the suspense within the show.
It is important for a fantasy drama to have a variety of settings or change of scenery every so often
because this adds more to the show and keeps viewers from becoming bored. In Game of Thrones
there are many different settings showed. In this show, there are many characters who believe they are
the one true king or queen. The plot of the show is the conquest of these different characters to take
their place on the Iron Throne as the king or queen, hence the name
Game of Thrones. The many different characters and showing the story of their journeys is what
allows for the many different settings. The show shows seven different kingdoms, there is the
North Kingdom, Kingdom of Mountain and Vale, Kingdom of Isles and Rivers, Kingdom of the
Rock, Kingdom of the Stormlands, Kingdom of the Reach and the Principality of Dorne. Scenes take
place in each one of the settings listed and many other settings in places between the kingdoms.
Another important quality of a good fantasy drama is showing character development.
Character development allows viewers to watch the characters grow and shows more than one side of
the character, this gives the characters more depth and makes them more interesting and

Adam Smith And Andrew Carnegie And The Gospel Of Wealth
The continuous disparity of wealth and income can cause constant economic problems within a
society. Although it is not apparent all the time, there are few benefits of discrepancy itself such as
individual wealth, capital, and labor. Both Smith and Carnegie have distinct beliefs about wealth that
differentiate from one another, yet are similar in certain ways. Adam Smith confined all his ideas
about the common man in his Wealth of Nations . Whereas, in the Gospel of Wealth, Andrew Carnegie
had distinct beliefs about the effects of capitalism . All in all, economic conditions of the 21st century
still date back to previous years and signify the importance of economic competition.
Andrew Carnegie address issues of wealth inequality and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Smith was very much concerned with the welfare of the community and created The Wealth of
Nations, to put forth most of his economic ideas, that are still considered today. The message Adam
Smith alleged was that since people satisfied their own self needs, then the economy would work
affectively. For example, When people look to their own self interests, they contribute unintentionally,
by means of an invisible hand , to the welfare of society (Smith 281). Smith talks about the invisible
hand as a guiding tool towards supply and demand within a society and argued the division of labor
generates wealth not just for that one person but for the nation as a whole. By selling products that are
in demand, for the purpose of earning money people are engaging in within their enterprises.
Additionally, the more demands, the more people want to invest, the more people need to work, the
harder it is to find a job when the economy is at a low. Today, the invisible hand theory is often guides
free markets and capitalism in the direction of efficiency, through supply and demand and competition
for scarce resources.
Another significant contribution to a government is Capitol because profit determines wealth which
can assist an economy to grow bigger and better. Andrew Carnegie acknowledged the unequal effects
of the laissez faire system of capitalism through The Gospel of Wealth. Carnegie thought that a
government should have little to no

Air Pollution and Global Warming
Air Pollution and Global Warming

Air pollution causes global warming through the greenhouse effect, according to the United States
Environmental Protection Agency. The greenhouse effect occurs when greenhouse gases trap and heat
energy from the sun and prevent it from escaping Earth s atmosphere and entering space. (EPA, 2012)
Atmospheric pollutions are caused by gasses and solid particulates released into the atmosphere. The
most hazard atmospheric pollutions are man made by the production of products. Pollutants are
released into the air include carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and sulfur dioxide.

Animals commonly fall victim to acid rain which is created by sulfur in the air caused by the burning
of coal. Sulfur is conducted in vesicles of rain poisoning streams, drinking water supplies, soil, and
injuring wildlife.
Transportation modes, industrialization and power plants are also major sources of air pollutants from
human activities. Furthermore, natural causes contribute to air pollution. For example, volcanic
eruptions release large amounts of gases and particulate matter in the air, storms producing pollen
grains, and methane gas from marshes.
The US contains 4% of the world s population but produces about 25% of all carbon dioxide
emissions. By comparison, Britain emits 3% about the same as India, which has 15 times as many
people. (BBC, 2009) We, as Americans, must have strategies and solutions for reducing and
eliminating pollution and in turn global warming begin on an individual level. Each person must first
be responsible for his or her own action. For example, disposing of household chemicals properly,
recycling and living as energy as efficiently as possible are effective ways for individuals to reduce
pollution. Also, people should hold the federal government and local state governments accountable
for monitoring and mandating industrial company s actions. For example, the EPA is responsible for
constituting unassailable and equalizes clean air levels. In 1967, Congress passed the Air Quality Act
that set forth outlines for air

Identity In Joseph Boyden s Three Day Road
An individual s identity is an ever changing composition of a person s aspirations, beliefs and
morality. Identity change is often influenced by many aspects of an individual s life, but individuals
must always return to their roots in order to stay true to their morality. This internal struggle over one s
identity is successfully illustrated in the characters of Three Day Road. In the novel, Joseph Boyden
vividly recounts the journey of two Native Canadian soldiers, Xavier and Elijah, who struggle with
identity loss from the adversity of the Great War. Through their harrowing experiences from the
battlefield, they experience a dissipation of morals which is only recovered in Xavier, the sole
survivor, through Niska s stories of her past, his own past, and of the ... Show more content on

Elijah s tragic descent to madness forewarns the dangers of assuming an identity drastically different
from one s true morality. From the beginning, Elijah felt that there was a need to fit in with the other
soldiers by adopting a British persona when speaking to others. In a shared code with Grey Eyes,
Elijah says, Dear Henry, [...] would you be a kind chap and make me a cup of tea? (144). Although his
British accent appears to be a convoluted joke, Elijah is really abandoning his Cree language in favour
of a British accent to please his peers. Despite the native language being an essential part of his
childhood identity, Elijah succumbs to the white man s perceived notions of the Cree language being
related to witchcraft as he strips away his native language to fit in with the others. This sudden
transformation to match a white man s identity ultimately results in an identity crisis that drives him to
insanity. Xavier illustrates this when he notices that,

Invisible Child By Andrea Elliot
In Invisible Child, a New York Times article written by Andrea Elliot, we follow a day in the life of a
young African American girl, Dasani, growing up in New York City. However, instead of living in an
Empire State of Mind, Dasani lives in the slums, growing up homeless with her two drug addicted
parents and seven siblings. Dasani often finds herself taking care of her siblings, making sure they
have enough to eat, tying shoelaces, changing diapers, getting them to the bus stop in time, and the list
goes on. An 11 year old girl, essentially taking care of a whole family, as well as taking care of herself
by going to school, receiving an education, and partaking in extra curricular activities. Elliot captures
the life and struggles of a family well under the poverty line, giving us an unprecedented look into
what Dasani must do each day not just to grow up in New York City, but to survive. Right off the bat,
Elliot throws shocking statistic after statistic: ...more than 22,000 homeless children in New York, One
in five American children is now living in poverty... Eliot s urgency to tell a story behind the
panhandlers and beggars shows that there is more at work behind the scenes of a family living below
the poverty line. To show that behind a woman and her husband who can t keep a job, there may be 4,
5, 6, 7, or even 8 children to feed as well. The negative stigma behind the homeless population in
America is the reason Elliot wrote the article. Elliot shows that

Compare And Contrast The Gospel Of Matthew And Mark
There are many different gospels that tell a similar story. Matthew and Mark are two Gospels written
in a similar way but have different audiences. The story is the Last Supper and is about the last meal
that Jesus experienced with his Apostles before his Sacrifice. There are many similarities, but not very
many differences. Overall, the same story is told, but from two different perspectives. The Gospel
according to Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. The story explains how the Messiah,
Jesus, was refused by Israel and finally sent the disciples to preach the gospel around the whole world.
As Matthew wrote for his fellow Jews, he wrote his Gospel in the language Jesus spoke, Aramaic,
which led early Church Fathers to believe Matthew s was the first Gospel. On the other hand, the
Gospel of Mark teaches that Jesus is the Son of God who assumed human nature. Mark wrote the
gospel in Greek for a Gentile Christian audience, which was undergoing persecution, perhaps in
Rome. A central theme is that following Jesus often means that a Christian must suffer like Jesus did.
Mark s Gospel points out that Jesus accepted this important title, but that he was reluctant to let people
know his identity. (Matthew 26:26 30 and Mark 14:22 26 ) The story about the Last Supper according
to Matthew s Gospel and Mark s Gospel is about when Jesus and his disciples were eating and Jesus
took bread, said a blessing, broke it, gave it to them and said, Take and eat; this is my body. Along
with the bread, he then took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to his disciples telling them all to drink it,
because it is his blood of the covenant which will be given up for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus said
that from now he wouldn t drink the fruit of the vine until he drank it with his disciples with the new
in the kingdom of his Father. Afterwards, they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Both
stories are the same except some of the wording is slightly different. The only differences within the
stories are some words within some sentences. For example, in the first sentence in Matthew s version
of the Last Supper it says, While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and
giving it to his

Death Penalty Dbq
Throughout history, many governments were implementing the death penalty unfairly because of the
unjust rulers, such as the Romans and the Ottomans. For example, they were executed people who
were demanding for their rights. Furthermore, the penalty ways were very ugly and inhumane. To be
more precise, Romans used the saw to cut up the accused into two halves and this execution style was
the favorite of the Roman emperor Caligula. Also, Ottomans were using the stake in the death penalty
to make the victim suffer as long as possible before he died. However, with the passage of time and
the progress of nations, these types of executions faded. Recently, international organizations such as

In some countries, executions are not only for criminal reasons, but also because of religious and
racial bias. Racial discrimination began in terms of using people with black skin as slaves and servants
for the rich. The racist practice against black Americans is an important example that explains how
blacks were persecuted. This policy began in the United States after the American Civil War and
emerged the racist legislation that supports the control of whites in the late nineteenth century. This
situation made blacks angry for the loss of their rights and tough punishments up to execution because
of racial grounds. Blacks began to resist this policy before World War II. Then, black American
leaders have appeared like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and called for changing the racial
laws. Martin Luther King was one of the most famous advocates of the abolition of the death penalty
and he said that death penalty is against the best rule of new criminology. In her article, The Death
Penalty: What Would Dr. King Do? (2012) Moye commends that Dr. King utilized the ethic of
peacefulness to social change. At its embodiment was a profound appreciation for the human poise in
all individuals, including the oppressor and the culprit. Martin Luther King means that every human
has the right to live and no one can take this right except God. On the other hand, racism has directly
affected the civil rights of blacks and indirectly on their lives. For example, judgments for certain
crimes against blacks are strict compared with whites and it may reach to penalty. Not only blacks
around the world are suffering from racism, but also people in occupied countries such as Palestine.
This is another type of using the violence and executions for religious reasons. Since 1967, Jews
occupied Palestine and declared that the land is theirs then they

Joy Luck Club Character Analysis
No one is the same everyone is a different person and while people may have similarities they are still
different people with different ideas and thoughts and outlooks on life even mothers and daughters.
Such as the daughters and mothers in the book, The Joy Luck Club. For starters, a young girl named
June and her mother Suyuan Woo were both alike in one common idea that they had completely
different views on everything even in speaking as she states, these kinds of explanations made me feel
my mother and I spoke two different languages, which we did. I talked to her in english, she answered
back in chinese. (Joy Luck, Tan,34) In saying this June tells metaphorically that they don t speak the
same language as in her mother and her never really seen things in the same light and literally as she
does not speak her mother s tongue. Even when they relate physically the mother relays to her
daughter that she is a foreigner to her and her past as the story goes, A friend once told me that my
mother and i were alike, that we had the same wispy hand gestures, same girlish laugh and sideways
look. When I shyly told my mother this, she seemed insulted and said, you don t even know little
percent of me how can you be me. (Joy Luck,Tan,27) This shows that while the daughter was trying to
relate to the mother by telling of her friends thoughts of their physical similarities she dismisses these
and says that her own daughter does not know her as a person. Secondly, over the

Grimm Brothers Collective Culture
The Grimm brothers lived in a factioned Germany with many different cultures that were struggling to
connect with one another. In attempts to help unify Germany the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm,
traveled throughout the country; listening, collecting, and writing down oral stories and fables from
various regions in Germany. They believed that preserving oral culture and stories from various places
in Germany would nationalize Germany by having a collective culture rather than many different
cultures. With seven total editions and a dictionary, preserving culture and unifying Germany was
their life goal. Writing down these oral stories and collecting them assisted in the formation of
Germany as a nation rather than multiple different imagined communities. Most nations have a shared
common culture and an official language. The Grimm brothers helped usher in an age of oneness in
Germany and in doing so, Germany became a more unified nation.
At the time that the Grimm brothers were collecting their stories, Germany was many different groups
of people, differing by region. They were not what we consider today a nation. A nation is an
imagined political community and imagined as both inherently limited and

sovereign. (1. Anderson) The term imagined in this sense refers to a group of people who know that
they belong to one another through shared beliefs, however, they will never meet everyone who is also
in that imagined community. They see themselves and each

Don T Call Me Ishmael Quotes
Don t Call Me Ishmael Analytical Essay
Ishmael Leseur is the main character in Don t Call Me Ishmael a book by Michael Gerard Bauer. As a
young boy, he courageously stepped up to year nine only to be bullied for his name, embarrassed in
front of his first love and to become a social outcast. This leads to him naming year nine the toughest,
the weirdest, the most embarrassingly awful and best year of his life.
Ishmael started year nine thinking he can stay invisible like he did in year eight. But some students
named Barry Bagsley, Doug Savage and Danny Wallace made his life tougher than ever by teasing
him, bullying him and even sometimes embarrassing him in front of his home room. In chapter 13, it

But unfortunately Barry Bagsley found Ishmael in year nine and started teasing his name and
everything about him, But I still don t know why Ishmael still names year nine the best year of his life.
I did some research and came across two main reasons why he named year nine the best year of his
life. First reason why he felt that year nine was his best year so far was because of special friends that
just moved to St Daniels and his name is James James Scobie. Even since James started at St Daniels,
he had made a lot of impact on the student about Barry Bagsley. When James became Ishmael friend,
Ishmael Became Bullied free to Bullet proof because Barry Bagsley feared James, James was the only
one that had guts (in the whole school) to stand up to Barry Bagsley. You can read this in Chapter 14
and 15. Second reason why Ishmael named year nine on the best year of his life was him making great
new friends. Friends that would always stand beside Ishmael if he was in trouble. When Ishmael had
no friends he was a lone wolf but ever since he had friends, he was happiest Ishmael he could be. This

The League s Best Center For The Past Seasons
1. DeMarcus Cousins Sacramento Kings DeMarcus Cousins has been the league s best center for the

he hasn t been recognized for immense talent due to the ineptitude of the franchise he plays for (yeah,

averages of 26.9 points (4th in the league), 11.5 rebounds (5th in the league), and 1.4 blocks. He

to the All NBA First Team this past season. Jordan had a career year. He finished the season with per

NBA in rebounding this past season, he leads the NBA in total rebounds over the last three seasons,
finishing first in that category twice. Jordan s athletic ability is his biggest strength. It allows the
Clippers to run their free flowing, fast up tempo offense at a peek level. Without Jordan the offense
and defense would function at much more inefficient level. The only knock on Jordan s game is his
inability to convert at the free throw line. He s among the worst free throw shooters in NBA history,
but even so, Jordan s value should not be overlooked. He s just as important to the Clippers as Chris
Paul and Blake Griffin. 4. Andre Drummond Detroit Pistons Since entering the league in 2012, Andre
Drummond has evolved immensely as a player. When he entered the league, Drummond was a
liability on both ends of the floor showing an inability to play efficiently on either end, but now, four
short years later, Drummond is absolute force on both ends of the floor. His offensive

Pros And Cons Of The Powhatans
Prior to the arrival of the Europeans the Powhatan s were far less populated and were far less
developed then the Europeans. They were hunter gatherers, hunting in thick forests during winter or
neo lithic farmers who lived in villages and grew their own crops (such as maize, cotton, medicine and
corn) and lived of them during summer and spring. The Powhatan s believed that land was not to be
owned but belonged to everyone and anyone, on that land they built simple tent like houses that they
could easily move when they had to. They did not have brick houses and buildings that the Europeans
had. The Powhatan s used sticks, bows and arrows to hunt and not guns and weapons used by the
Spanish. In a civilised place a man would do most of the work but women were the ones who built
houses, fetched firewood and a lot more (Source 2) which is one of the many reasons why the
Europeans thought the Indians were not civilised. There were no real boundaries, tribes were separated
by rivers, swamps, mountains, and other natural landmarks (Source 13). The way they fought or killed
was brutal, ...two large stones were placed on the ground, Smith s head was forced upon them and a
warrior raised a club to smash in his brain (Source 4).
The European nation that came to the Powhatan territory were the Spanish people. A lot of things
brought them to the American territory, the Queen of England specifically was interested in the
possibility of the colonies providing gold, a passage to Asia and challenging Spain in a world totally
different from what they were used to ( the new world) (Source 1). The Spanish wanted to trade,
establish new townships and plantations (source 2). They basically wanted to take over the Powhatan
land and own it even if it was to be done by force. The Spanish invaded the Powhatan territory
because they believed that it would make them richer then what they already were, the routes, the

The Rise and Fall of Class in Britain
INTRODUCTION Beyond Class Forward to Class? The rise and fall of class in Britain is both an
allusive and ironic phrase, totally correct yet also at least half mistaken. It is allusive (and correct)
because, during the last twenty years or so, the once fashionable and widely accepted view that class
structure and class analysis provide the key to understanding modern British history and modern
British life has been disregarded by many historians and abandoned by almost all politicians. Yet it is
also ironic (or mistaken), because it remains a generally held belief, not just in Britain but around the
world, that class, like the weather and the monarchy, is a peculiarly and particularly British
preoccupation. It certainly has been in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In trying to understand and explain the evolution of past societies, Marx believed it was essential to
deal not just with the politics of their ruling elites but also with the histories of their whole
populations. But how were these whole populations to be encompassed and described in a
comprehensive and convincing way? What were the abstract concepts and collective nouns he thought
it appropriate to employ for this purpose? Marx s solution which proved exceptionally influential was
to classify individuals in collective groupings according to their different relations to the means of
production. This enabled him (and his followers) to place everybody in one of three categories:
landowners, who drew their unearned income from their estates as rents; bourgeois capitalists, who
obtained their earned income from their businesses in the form of profits; and proletarian workers,
who made their money by selling their labor to their employers in exchange for weekly wages. For
Marx, these were the three fundamental, constitutive classes of human society, and it was in the
conflicts among them, which had raged unabated

Visual Illusions Essay
My project is over visual effects and how the eye works. This project was chosen because I have
always wondered how the human eye works and Visual trickery. Also because sometimes some visual

how to create one on my own. How do visual illusions work on the human eye? This paragraph is

FCAT Argumentative Essay
The FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test) which is a statewide standardized test for the

Stereotypes Exposed On Skin Color
Stereotypes have existed since humans first began to roam the planet. Early Australopithecus, the first
humans, most likely used stereotypes when deciding their daily task. Stereotypes such as everything
are dangerous and want to kill them. Later as Homo sapiens created cities and civilianization s
stereotypes helped evaluate an incoming threat so they could close the city and gather a defense to
save not only themselves but everything they worked hard to create from those who would kill them
and take the city from them. But modern human s ability to perceive threats have been clouded by
stereotypes base on skin color; to a point where anyone who is different is a threat who needs to be
eliminated. A proactive human whose flight or fight response is to fight will sometimes attack this
perceived threat without any other information aside from the stereotype. These attacks can sometimes
lead to the arrest or death of the threat who, in most cases, was an innocent in the wrong place at the
wrong time. So while stereotypes where essential to survival in early cultures, modern use of
stereotypes have turned to the extremes clouded by hatred of those who are different. In equatorial
Africa a small species of human, Australopithecus, roamed the savannah. In order to survive they
small bipedal species most likely based its day to day decisions such as what food to gather, and
where to sleep, based on the movement and location of larger predators such as lions. They used the

Abstract
Chronic confusion is defined as the progressive deterioration of intellect, memory loss, and behavioral
change. This disease has a rapid onset and the symptoms dominate the body and mind in a very
progressive manner. This paper examines the comfort theory as one way to aid in the unmet needs of a
chronically confused patient, and by forming relationships between a patients needs, with nursing
interventions, the well being of the individual will improve. This paper also goes into detail about the

The North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) classifies chronic confusion is an
irreversible, long standing and or progressive deterioration of intellect and personality characterized
by decreased ability to interpret environmental stimuli, decreased capacity for intellectual thought
processes, and disturbances of memory, orientation and behavior (Moorhead, Johnson, Swanson,
2013). The subjective characteristics would be impaired memory, and objective characteristics would
be altered interpretation, altered personality, organic impairment evidence, impaired socialization
(Moorhead, Johnson, Swanson, 2013). According to Selby, (2006) chronic confusion is having a rapid
onset with multiple factors such as personality change, poor memory, and poor self care that
dominates the mind and body. Making those suffering from confusion extremely vulnerable and prone
to develop acute confusion as well. Signs of confusion are inability to retrieve memories, loss of
ability to interpret sensory information, with disturbances in sleep patterns, cognition, and
disorientation (Selby, 2006). From the perspective of Occupational Therapy, (Trace, and Howell,

The Gaze
Today s audience is one of laziness. The majority of content consumers are not programed to digest
what they watch with a critical eye. While there is no real harm in this, there is room for change and
experimental media has been trying to provoke that change for decades. Bertolt Brecht s theory and
practice of alienation, or v effect, has been pulling audiences out of their comfort zone for a long time
through many different types of art and entertainment. Another topic of discussion is The Gaze ;
usually seen through the male s eye. Again, it is not harmful, but that is because it has been engrained
in the modern audience s brain that it is okay to view woman the way entertainment says is okay.
While they are two very different themes, alienation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mainstream cinema (and culture) reinforces how we are to look at women (as objects, as passive, as
without agency, unworthy of our existential attention) (Week 8 Slides). While there is nothing wrong
with admiring the female form, it does raise some questions about how easily susceptible audiences
are to media. When the audience has ...come to accept the sexist tropes and codes of mainstream
Hollywood cinema as natural, inevitable and beyond reproach... (Week 8 Slides), there is a problem.
The Gaze started early on in cinema and has continued to be practiced in films even to today, if not
more so today. One film in particular that sparked controversy was Michael Powell s 1960 film
Peeping Tom . The film is about a serial killer who films his victims as they are murdered. This film
ended up being banned in many places around the world and was seen as one of the worst films. A few
years later, Martin Scorsese brought the movie back into the light and is now seen as one of the
greatest cult films ever made. The reason behind why it shifted from being appaling to being amazing,
relies on the audience. Nothing about the film has changed over the years, but the opinion of it has.
How can this be? It has to do with the audience s reaction and perception of the content. In 1960,
audiences brains weren t trained to fetishize woman like they are in today s modern films. The
voyeuristic nature of the film

Anesthesia After The Civil War
Another way anesthesia improved healthcare was through continued public acknowledgement of its
versatility. It also led to new discoveries in the medical field and impacted the rest of America s
medical related future. First off, it was widely used in the Crimean War over in Europe from 1853
1856. Because of anesthesia s success in the Crimean War, American physicians read up on the use of
chloroform through pamphlets and documents that detailed how chloroform was used in the Crimean
War and how it was used in civilian practices (Devine). As the war raged on, it soon became a
common realization, after trial and error, that doctors should use chloroform during surgical operations
when needed. By the end of the Civil War, Union records showed

The Effects Of Coal Ash On The Health Of Water Systems
Introduction Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal in power plants and is composed mainly of
aluminum and silicon oxides. This ash is commonly stored away in dump sites, only to leach out
solutions of concentrated toxic heavy metals. Such issues are detrimental to the health of water
systems, posing both a human and environmental health risk. However, there are solutions to this
problem. Coal ash possesses unique chemical properties that allow for the remediation of other
environmental concerns, such as the treatment of soil polluted with heavy metals, the removal of
nutrients from wastewater, and the remediation of acid mine drainage in streams. Coal ash is known to
contain a number of different toxic metals, the exact content dependent upon the coal it is formed
from. Containing this potential pollution hazard is an expensive problem, as approximately 75% of all
ash generated is stored in landfills. In these sites, rainwater can leach out toxic metals including
mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, molybdenum, lead and selenium. As over 500 million tons of
ash are produced each year, there s an increasing environmental health hazard to the surrounding
water systems of these landfills. Pollution can spread to municipal water systems and potentially
poison humans. As such, figuring out a better solution to deal with the unused coal ash is of significant
importance. Current uses of coal ash primarily include the formation of concrete due the pozzolanic
properties of coal

The Movie World War Z Is A Zombie Apocalyptic Horror Film...
The movie World War Z is a zombie apocalyptic horror film directed by Marc Forster. The movie was
loosely based off of Max Brook s novel of the same name. Overall, it accrued positive reviews with a
successful box office. Steve Persall applauded its aesthetic features, as it offers vivid images of what
these monsters are about and what they re capable of doing . Matt Zoller Seitz, on the other hand,
argues that [it s] as if someone watched the similar 28 Days Later and thought, That was a good
movie, but it would be better if it cost $200 million. The critics generally agree that it is an action
movie as the zombies twitch, leap, gnash, and destroy (Chris Cabin Slant Magazine). But they
disagree on the appropriate rating and whether the film was, overall, satisfying in producing
something original. It is balanced in violence and carnage, but keeps it friendly and evades images of
blood and gore (Chris Cabin). Its special effects and horror aesthetics give the feel of a science fiction
horror and action film as they were meant to evoke awe. World War Z is a good film and is packed
with action, suspense, horror, and visual appeal. The action within the movie is very fast paced, and it
begins during a Gerry Lane s family commute in Philadelphia. Gerry Lane (portrayed by Brad Pitt)
and his family fight to leave the congested streets that are filled with exponentially growing infected

The Negative Effects Of Role Playing Games On Teens
Is it possible that some of today s most popular yet most violent role playing games might have a
severe negative impact on today s world? In today s world, many teens are involved in a variety of
games with simulated violence included in them. Although they are popular, these games have
received a lot of controversy over the years. Twenty year old Adam Lanza was obsessed with the
violent lifelike video battle games that he played at the large suburban home where he lived alone with
his mother, a teacher who became the first victim of his horrific shooting spree in December of 2012.
(6 Murders whose killings are linked to video game obsession). Events like this are unfortunately
common which results in people being concerned about the games causing real world problems.
Others have brought up concern about the content and others about their purpose. If these games are
as hazardous as they are said to be, they should not be permitted or tolerated at all because of the
range of problems they can cause. Even though some believe they are okay I strongly believe role
playing games with simulated violence have a negative impact on teens because, violent role playing
games waste too much time, influence violence, and cause bad behavior.
To start, role playing games have a negative impact on teens because they are a waste of time. Often
times these games have a prize or motive that draws teens into participating. The negative part of this
comes when so many teens are

Regarding the provenance of the raw materials, in this work we focus in the limestone, being an
important construction material that was not present in the immediate surroundings of
Tenochtitlan. In fact, this was an island city, located in the middle of a volcanic basin, and the nearest
geological limestone outcrops were located far away. According to the historical sources written
during the 16th century, the Aztecs imported by way of tribute and commerce lime and limestone from
different regions. For instance, the tributary lists known as the Matrícula de

On the other hand, the native informants of Friar
Bernardino de Sahagún (1979, xi:221r) speak about different kinds of limestone used to paint:
chimaltizatl and tetizatl. After Sahagún (2000, 1132), the first came from Huaxtepec (near
Cuernavaca, Morelos) and was sold in the market, while the second one was obtained in the small
rivers near Tula (in the modern state of Hidalgo). For the new enlargement of the Templo
Mayor ordered around ad 1467 by Motecuhzoma I, mentioned above, the lime would have been
provided by the people from the Cuernavaca area, in the modern state of Morelos (Durán 1984;
Nicholson 1987; López Luján et al. 2003; López Luján 2006). Understanding the provenance of the
limestone used in the plasters of Templo Mayor, and clarifying whether there were changes over time
in the outcrops exploited, could therefore help in better understanding the relationship between the
Mexicas and their neighbours in Central Mexico and verifying what the historical sources suggest.

The Revivalists By Nell Vyse
The Revivalists
A friend of Charles and Nell Vyse, the artist William Stott 14 had lately leased one of the Cheyne Row
studios, and not long after settling in he proposed that he should paint a conversation piece, depicting
both the Vyses at work in their studio. Titled The Revivalists by Stott, the painting completed by 1921,
and exhibited by him at the Royal Academy (RA 17) in the same year. It was an opportune advertising
coup for the Vyses, as Vyse was showing two figurative works in the same exhibition. The following

It was in 1921 that Vyse temporarily put aside his fascination with flower sellers and produced the
modernist image of motherhood he titled Madonna of World s End Passage (Fig 43). In the first half
of the 20th century, an area of Chelsea, known as World s End, consisted of working class people
living in poorly maintained housing, poverty, and deprivation. World s End Passage was within

allowed a ceramic artist, Vyse has attempted to depict a woman from such an environment.
Additionally, the subject bears a striking resemblance to Nell Vyse, aged twenty eight, whom he

The Effects Of Self-Injury On Women

My class suspected that women cut themselves more than men. The class was wrong with a static of 2

At the beginning of our time on this earth, mankind was learning to stand up. Upon walking a good

decided to stop moving and mankind developed cultivation skills to better serve us. Since then
mankind has grown by leaps and bounds over the kingdoms and empires of old. Growth was spurred
by conquest. It was almost as if man was born to kill or be killed. Although riddled with turmoil the

This brings me to my first point: cost. The ABM appeared to have all the characteristics of a solution
in search of a problem. This characteristic shows up all too often in defense research and development
programs, especially in the field of nuclear weaponry. A possibly fundamental reason why the ABM

New Deal Outline
It all started on a day called Black Tuesday, which was on October 29 1929. On this day, the American
stock market crashed after years of upward growth. The Great Depression was one of the darkest
times in American history. It was a frustrating time for all Americans. For one thing, there was the
government not doing enough at the start of the event. The unemployment rate was ridiculously high
because there was not enough money to hire people. According to PBS, more than 3.2 million
Americans were unemployed. Race in the Great Depression was a rising issue. African American
citizens were getting tired of the lack of rights that they had, so civil rights leaders started fighting

Racism was also a big problem during the Great Depression, but was not addressed as much as it
should of, because of the main issues of the Great Depression. The NAACP came in with anti
lynching laws, which was a no brainer to say that the laws should be made, but they were not until
later dates. The NAACP led the civil rights act for a long time in the early twentieth century with anti
lynching laws, segregation in schools, and overall human rights.

What Makes a Good Website
What makes a good website?
Introduction
In my opinion what makes a good web page? I have been on the net for the last, can t really believe it,
coming to ten years now. From the conception to now, I have been a regular surfer on the web, visiting
thousands of pages a month, mostly in search of some thing or another. Most searches have lead to
even more searches but some times I come up tops. Having been used to the all text sites of the
beginning, and seeing the first implementations of more graphic based sites, there was a three year
lapse where I rarely got to surfing and missed a whole evolution in web page. When I returned in full
to surfing, I discovered the face of the internet have started to change. Buttons with ... Show more

Not using clashing colours is important, so, different shades of one colour used makes for a pleasant
view, just using different text colours or inlays to spice it up a bit.
Usability:
After the first three seconds is up, and the site still has my attention, usability of the site is the one that
will make me stick around.
Usability comes in many forms, and has many ingredients to it. For a start, the layout is the most
important. You can have good graphics but bad layout, and your site is ruined. Not thinking further
than your own computer screen is a big mistake. If a page does not fit my screen when I open it up it
already lost some points, so standardised width is a bonus that all good sites have. Even if you don t
fill up the screen on bigger resolutions, having it usable on all is n good point (like nokia.com or
cnn.com). Where you place everything is going to make it a good site or not.
The simple points of usability is certainly obvious for someone who has spent some time on bad sites,
not that I think I m pro at this, but off course they are catering for me as well when they are building
the sites. Basic layout is very important, and by that, I mean, the basics in layout. Having things in
places where you think people are going to look is a good start. If you have to look for a link to the
main page from the splash page, then forget about getting much traffic. If the main page does

To Give Up On Words Silence In Western Apache Culture Summary
Introduction
Keith H. Basso s ethnographic research titled, To Give up on Words: Silence in Western Apache
Culture is an investigation of situations when members of a certain Apache community in the western
United States assume the state of silence as a form of social interaction. In this paper, I will first note
details of the society under consideration and Basso s interests in regards to the questions he is trying
to answer. I will introduce some anthropological concepts that are suitable to the discussion, followed
by Basso s observations regarding silence in the Apache community, including his methods,
arguments, and conclusion. Finally, I will evaluate Basso s findings and deduce if the evidence
supports the conclusion made; I will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A group of gowąąs then combine to form a gotąą, which is described by Basso as spatially localized
clusters. In the Cibecue community, rituals and traditions still carry great importance and play a
significant role in communication, despite intervention from Anglo missionaries to modernize the
community. A major part of Basso s interests in the Cibecue community is to study the role of silence
in a community where focused gatherings are a common mode of public communication. He looks to
examine situations where silence becomes the appropriate communicative process and the reasons
why it is considered so. Moreover, these situations of silence only occur during a certain period or
circumstance that is defined by tradition as well as experience. Another factor in Basso s interest is to
define what human emotion determines the decision to remain silent in a particular situation. A
discussion of Basso s definition of the term situation will be provided in the next section.
Contextual Concepts In order to completely understand the arguments put forth by Basso in his
research, it is vital to understand the concept that communication occurs with or without the usage of
speech, and in this case through silence. Although the people engaged in this silence are not
communicating directly per se, the silence is an acknowledgement of their presence. Interpersonal
communication, which occurs face to face, employs three main technical components: a code (an

Business Skills For A New Home
The job requirements are straight forward and do not ask for much. Some of the duties consists of
promoting property through ads, open houses and listing services. Advertising is key to attract
potential buyers and spread your business name around. Advising clients on prices of homes, current
market conditions and other market information also come into play. Taking prospective buyers to
view properties and persuading them to consider investing in a new home. As well as bringing
together negotiations between the buyer and seller. These are just a few things that the real estate
business will ask for.
I believe I have all the personal characteristics and skills needed to be a sales agent or broker. I plan to
go to college to learn all the necessary business skills to be successful. Most sales agents and brokers
are self employed. This means they have to maintain a functional business without wasting money and
losing valuable time. Great business skills come in handy when you run everything on your own.
Problems will pop up eventually which will require quick thinking and reaction time. Problem solving
skills aren t going to be frequently used but nevertheless, you can never over prepare for the worst.
Organizations skills can help have your work space clean and keep you on track during the day.
Always being able to have yourself on the ball can lead to more jobs or goals being completed. Lastly,
the income you make depends on your sales which means you need to have

Endometriosis Essay
Endometriosis is a disease that has an effect on over six million women and girls in the United States
alone, over one million women in Canada, and several million more around the world. Endometriosis
is known to be a chronic and painful affliction of the tissue surrounding the uterus, normally found in
the abdomen, inside of the fallopian tubes, often located on the ovaries, covering the supporting
ligaments around the uterus, on the lining of the pelvic cavity, or can be found in the perineum.
Although these are the normal physiological locations for Endometriosis, it can also affect the bowels,
bladder, cervix, vulva, bladder, vagina, and is often associated with surgical scars found on the
abdomen. The most clear indicator of endometriosis is pain associated with the abdominal area.
Occasionally, the disease can also be found on the arms, thighs, the lungs, and even less frequently
found on other anatomical areas. Endometriosis can be a primary contributor to infertility issues
because the disease causes misplaced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Term Paper
The Coping Process Throughout my entire life I have been dealing with stress even when I have tried
to avoid it. Stress always manages to find it s way to you, and you either can ignore what is causing
you stress, or find a method to deal with your stressor head on.
When I was younger, about thirteen or so my parents got divorced. I didn t know how to accept the
fact that my parents would no longer be living under the same roof, and no one made a huge deal
about this inside the family. Was I just supposed to act like this is a normal part of life? When I would
go to school, I didn t want to mentions to all my friends what was going on at the time because I felt ...

But I know when the time comes I will need a good coping system to deal with it.
Stress is an ongoing problem that happens in everyone s life. Stress is a simple term used by many
people, most of the time it is misunderstood or used to describe a condition of a person. It is a known
factor that stressors play a large part of everyone s daily living, many people learn to either manage
stress or have been placed on some type of medication to help control it. In the world today, there are
so many causes and effects of stress but only a few different ways to help manage and maintain a
healthy lifestyle. The effects of stress is directly linked to coping. The study of coping has evolved to
surround a large variety of training beginning with all areas of psychology such as health psychology
and environmental psychology. Coping strategies can be broken up into three large components,
(physiological, cognitive, and learned.) The cognitive approach to coping is based on a mental process
of how the individual values the situation. Where the level of judgement determines the level of stress
and the unique coping strategies that the individual decides to use. In physiological it is inside the
body and what goes on behind closed doors. The body has its own way of coping with stress. Any
threat or challenge that an individual perceives in the environment triggers a chain of events. The
learned component of coping includes everything from

George Orwell s Ordinary People
George Orwell was born to an economically fragile government employed family who wanted him to
have an upper middle class upbringing. At a younger age he was seldom exposed to anyone below his
social class. During the writing process of his works The Road to Wigan Pier and Down and Out in
Paris and London he met what he labeled as ordinary people. Orwell defined ordinary people as
people who were not overindulged with material goods, had ordinary working jobs, had a minimal
education, and wont achieve success or greatness. He admired these people as despite their
circumstance they still worked, loved, cared, had children and had fun just like normal unordinary
people like himself. Additionally, he found the lack of prudishness and hypocrisy

  • 2. Lou Gehrig’s Farewell Speech Essay Lou Gehrig s Farewell Speech Throughout the course of American history, there have been copious amounts of famous speeches, spoken by many different people. From political figures to sports players; these people have provided deep thoughts and great insights about who they are and the world we live in today. Being a sports enthusiast, a memorable speech comes to my mind. Lou Gehrig s farewell speech , given on July 4th, 1939, to more than 62,000 fans at New York City s Yankee Stadium, has become a cornerstone in the history of baseball in America. Lou Gehrig is considered one of the most under rated sports players of all time. Gehrig played in the same era with greats like Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio. In Fact, Gehrig played on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gehrig was not removed from playing baseball; rather, Gehrig took himself out, after not being able to leg out an infield hit. Gehrig was diagnosed with a rare degenerative disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig s disease); Lou Gehrig would never play baseball again. The purpose of his farewell speech was to formally address his fans all over the world, and confirm the rumors that Gehrig would never play baseball again. There are several different structures that could be used to describe this speech, but the main structure is cause and effect. A lot of Gehrig s fans believed that this unfortunate diagnosis would cause some sort of depression, anger within himself, or withdrawal from the American people. This was not the case, however. Gehrig s first line of his speech, Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this Earth. Clearly shows cause and effect structure. The diagnosis of Lou Gehrig s disease did not cause Gehrig to be depressed; rather, it caused Gehrig to be thankful for what he had. Throughout this speech, each form of rhetoric is used. The first obvious rhetorical appeal would be Ethos. A prestigious sports figure like Lou Gehrig definitely has ethos appeal. Lou Gehrig got the attention of thousands maybe millions of people when he gave his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Deviance in Hockey Violence in ice hockey has been an identifying staple in the sport since the first hockey leagues formed in the mid 1880 s, (Ice Hockey Origins, Growth and Changes in the Game). Since the modern era of hockey, and the creation of the Stanley Cup, hockey has been viewed as one of the most violent sports in western civilization. Clarence Campbell, former NHL President has even said that [w]ithout violence, there would be no such thing as hockey, (Coakley). To an extent hockey is unmatched in illegal assaults by any other sport, in both amateur and professional leagues, (Colburn). This does not mean that the contact in other sports is not as intense as hockey, for example rugby and football are both very violent sports, but this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This institutionalization created a different atmosphere around the entire world of sport. Sports became something that men and women could participate in as well as small children. Because of this universalization of sport it began to attract the attention of everyone, rather than just the participants. With a new audience came a new set of views and interpretations of what sports were and most sports fit into this new set of norms, and if not they adapted to fit into them. Hockey, however, did not conform to these new norms. Violence, fistfights specifically, in hockey are viewed as deviant because; that very type of violence is statistically rare in institutionalized sports and it is harmful to individuals, the sport of hockey, and society as a whole. This violence also violates the norms that society has created for competitive sport. Because of these harms, the rarity of such violence in sports, and the violation of the norms, a negative societal reaction forms. One of the ways that an act can contract a deviant label is by its statistical rarity, (Bereska). Violence, such as the fistfights seen in hockey, is a statistical rarity. Statistical rarity in this sense means that the type of violence seen in hockey, and the volume that it is seen in hockey, is unheard of in any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, choosing art pieces for your home can be daunting when you have no experience in room design. Luckily, we have compiled a list of room decorating ideas that will help you choose the right artwork for your home and its many spaces. Spend time in the space and select the most important and visible walls in those rooms. These walls should be considered the focal points of your design. When choosing art for these spaces, consider the size that art will need to be in order to take up enough visual space. Match the size and shape of the pieces to the walls. For instance, if you have a long horizontal wall, hang a long horizontal piece of art. In the same space, you could also hand a collection of pieces in order to take up more horizontal space. By accentuating the height or length of the wall, you will be making the room feel larger. Choosing Art For Your Bedroom When choosing art for your bedroom, it is important that you consider what it is you would like to get out of the space. Is your bedroom a place of rest, a place to unwind, or a place for romance? The style and mood of the art you choose should be in line with your overall plans for your bedroom space. Because art is such an emotive tool, it is particularly important in your bedroom that the colors of the art displayed help accomplish your bedroom s overarching theme. For example, red is the color of passion, and although a painting that uses a large swathe of red is great for a room designated for romance, it may not be well suited in a room designated for relaxation. • 8. Analysis Of Game Of Thrones Game of Thrones is a show that I have recently started watching. I usually don t watch television shows of this genre, but this one is very entertaining. Game of Thrones is a good fantasy drama because of the variety of settings, character development, and the suspense within the show. It is important for a fantasy drama to have a variety of settings or change of scenery every so often because this adds more to the show and keeps viewers from becoming bored. In Game of Thrones there are many different settings showed. In this show, there are many characters who believe they are the one true king or queen. The plot of the show is the conquest of these different characters to take their place on the Iron Throne as the king or queen, hence the name Game of Thrones. The many different characters and showing the story of their journeys is what allows for the many different settings. The show shows seven different kingdoms, there is the North Kingdom, Kingdom of Mountain and Vale, Kingdom of Isles and Rivers, Kingdom of the Rock, Kingdom of the Stormlands, Kingdom of the Reach and the Principality of Dorne. Scenes take place in each one of the settings listed and many other settings in places between the kingdoms. Another important quality of a good fantasy drama is showing character development. Character development allows viewers to watch the characters grow and shows more than one side of the character, this gives the characters more depth and makes them more interesting and ... • 9. Adam Smith And Andrew Carnegie And The Gospel Of Wealth The continuous disparity of wealth and income can cause constant economic problems within a society. Although it is not apparent all the time, there are few benefits of discrepancy itself such as individual wealth, capital, and labor. Both Smith and Carnegie have distinct beliefs about wealth that differentiate from one another, yet are similar in certain ways. Adam Smith confined all his ideas about the common man in his Wealth of Nations . Whereas, in the Gospel of Wealth, Andrew Carnegie had distinct beliefs about the effects of capitalism . All in all, economic conditions of the 21st century still date back to previous years and signify the importance of economic competition. Andrew Carnegie address issues of wealth inequality and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smith was very much concerned with the welfare of the community and created The Wealth of Nations, to put forth most of his economic ideas, that are still considered today. The message Adam Smith alleged was that since people satisfied their own self needs, then the economy would work affectively. For example, When people look to their own self interests, they contribute unintentionally, by means of an invisible hand , to the welfare of society (Smith 281). Smith talks about the invisible hand as a guiding tool towards supply and demand within a society and argued the division of labor generates wealth not just for that one person but for the nation as a whole. By selling products that are in demand, for the purpose of earning money people are engaging in within their enterprises. Additionally, the more demands, the more people want to invest, the more people need to work, the harder it is to find a job when the economy is at a low. Today, the invisible hand theory is often guides free markets and capitalism in the direction of efficiency, through supply and demand and competition for scarce resources. Another significant contribution to a government is Capitol because profit determines wealth which can assist an economy to grow bigger and better. Andrew Carnegie acknowledged the unequal effects of the laissez faire system of capitalism through The Gospel of Wealth. Carnegie thought that a government should have little to no ... Air Pollution and Global Warming Air Pollution and Global Warming SCI 275 Cheryl Wilson September 30, 2012 Tori Robinson Air pollution causes global warming through the greenhouse effect, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The greenhouse effect occurs when greenhouse gases trap and heat energy from the sun and prevent it from escaping Earth s atmosphere and entering space. (EPA, 2012) Atmospheric pollutions are caused by gasses and solid particulates released into the atmosphere. The most hazard atmospheric pollutions are man made by the production of products. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Animals commonly fall victim to acid rain which is created by sulfur in the air caused by the burning of coal. Sulfur is conducted in vesicles of rain poisoning streams, drinking water supplies, soil, and injuring wildlife. Transportation modes, industrialization and power plants are also major sources of air pollutants from human activities. Furthermore, natural causes contribute to air pollution. For example, volcanic eruptions release large amounts of gases and particulate matter in the air, storms producing pollen grains, and methane gas from marshes. The US contains 4% of the world s population but produces about 25% of all carbon dioxide emissions. By comparison, Britain emits 3% about the same as India, which has 15 times as many people. (BBC, 2009) We, as Americans, must have strategies and solutions for reducing and eliminating pollution and in turn global warming begin on an individual level. Each person must first be responsible for his or her own action. For example, disposing of household chemicals properly, recycling and living as energy as efficiently as possible are effective ways for individuals to reduce pollution. Also, people should hold the federal government and local state governments accountable for monitoring and mandating industrial company s actions. For example, the EPA is responsible for constituting unassailable and equalizes clean air levels. In 1967, Congress passed the Air Quality Act that set forth outlines for air ... • 11. Identity In Joseph Boyden s Three Day Road An individual s identity is an ever changing composition of a person s aspirations, beliefs and morality. Identity change is often influenced by many aspects of an individual s life, but individuals must always return to their roots in order to stay true to their morality. This internal struggle over one s identity is successfully illustrated in the characters of Three Day Road. In the novel, Joseph Boyden vividly recounts the journey of two Native Canadian soldiers, Xavier and Elijah, who struggle with identity loss from the adversity of the Great War. Through their harrowing experiences from the battlefield, they experience a dissipation of morals which is only recovered in Xavier, the sole survivor, through Niska s stories of her past, his own past, and of the ... From the beginning, Elijah felt that there was a need to fit in with the other soldiers by adopting a British persona when speaking to others. In a shared code with Grey Eyes, Elijah says, Dear Henry, [...] would you be a kind chap and make me a cup of tea? (144). Although his British accent appears to be a convoluted joke, Elijah is really abandoning his Cree language in favour of a British accent to please his peers. Despite the native language being an essential part of his childhood identity, Elijah succumbs to the white man s perceived notions of the Cree language being related to witchcraft as he strips away his native language to fit in with the others. This sudden transformation to match a white man s identity ultimately results in an identity crisis that drives him to insanity. Xavier illustrates this when he notices that, ... • 12. Invisible Child By Andrea Elliot In Invisible Child, a New York Times article written by Andrea Elliot, we follow a day in the life of a young African American girl, Dasani, growing up in New York City. However, instead of living in an Empire State of Mind, Dasani lives in the slums, growing up homeless with her two drug addicted parents and seven siblings. Dasani often finds herself taking care of her siblings, making sure they have enough to eat, tying shoelaces, changing diapers, getting them to the bus stop in time, and the list goes on. An 11 year old girl, essentially taking care of a whole family, as well as taking care of herself by going to school, receiving an education, and partaking in extra curricular activities. Elliot captures the life and struggles of a family well under the poverty line, giving us an unprecedented look into what Dasani must do each day not just to grow up in New York City, but to survive. Right off the bat, Elliot throws shocking statistic after statistic: ...more than 22,000 homeless children in New York, One in five American children is now living in poverty... Eliot s urgency to tell a story behind the panhandlers and beggars shows that there is more at work behind the scenes of a family living below the poverty line. To show that behind a woman and her husband who can t keep a job, there may be 4, 5, 6, 7, or even 8 children to feed as well. The negative stigma behind the homeless population in America is the reason Elliot wrote the article. Elliot shows that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Compare And Contrast The Gospel Of Matthew And Mark There are many different gospels that tell a similar story. Matthew and Mark are two Gospels written in a similar way but have different audiences. The story is the Last Supper and is about the last meal that Jesus experienced with his Apostles before his Sacrifice. There are many similarities, but not very many differences. Overall, the same story is told, but from two different perspectives. The Gospel according to Matthew is the first book of the New Testament. The story explains how the Messiah, Jesus, was refused by Israel and finally sent the disciples to preach the gospel around the whole world. As Matthew wrote for his fellow Jews, he wrote his Gospel in the language Jesus spoke, Aramaic, which led early Church Fathers to believe Matthew s was the first Gospel. On the other hand, the Gospel of Mark teaches that Jesus is the Son of God who assumed human nature. Mark wrote the gospel in Greek for a Gentile Christian audience, which was undergoing persecution, perhaps in Rome. A central theme is that following Jesus often means that a Christian must suffer like Jesus did. Mark s Gospel points out that Jesus accepted this important title, but that he was reluctant to let people know his identity. (Matthew 26:26 30 and Mark 14:22 26 ) The story about the Last Supper according to Matthew s Gospel and Mark s Gospel is about when Jesus and his disciples were eating and Jesus took bread, said a blessing, broke it, gave it to them and said, Take and eat; this is my body. Along with the bread, he then took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to his disciples telling them all to drink it, because it is his blood of the covenant which will be given up for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus said that from now he wouldn t drink the fruit of the vine until he drank it with his disciples with the new in the kingdom of his Father. Afterwards, they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Both stories are the same except some of the wording is slightly different. The only differences within the stories are some words within some sentences. For example, in the first sentence in Matthew s version of the Last Supper it says, While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his ... • 14. Death Penalty Dbq Throughout history, many governments were implementing the death penalty unfairly because of the unjust rulers, such as the Romans and the Ottomans. For example, they were executed people who were demanding for their rights. Furthermore, the penalty ways were very ugly and inhumane. To be more precise, Romans used the saw to cut up the accused into two halves and this execution style was the favorite of the Roman emperor Caligula. Also, Ottomans were using the stake in the death penalty to make the victim suffer as long as possible before he died. However, with the passage of time and the progress of nations, these types of executions faded. In some countries, executions are not only for criminal reasons, but also because of religious and racial bias. Racial discrimination began in terms of using people with black skin as slaves and servants for the rich. The racist practice against black Americans is an important example that explains how blacks were persecuted. This policy began in the United States after the American Civil War and emerged the racist legislation that supports the control of whites in the late nineteenth century. This situation made blacks angry for the loss of their rights and tough punishments up to execution because of racial grounds. Blacks began to resist this policy before World War II. Then, black American leaders have appeared like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and called for changing the racial laws. Martin Luther King was one of the most famous advocates of the abolition of the death penalty and he said that death penalty is against the best rule of new criminology. In her article, The Death Penalty: What Would Dr. King Do? (2012) Moye commends that Dr. King utilized the ethic of peacefulness to social change. At its embodiment was a profound appreciation for the human poise in all individuals, including the oppressor and the culprit. Martin Luther King means that every human has the right to live and no one can take this right except God. On the other hand, racism has directly affected the civil rights of blacks and indirectly on their lives. For example, judgments for certain crimes against blacks are strict compared with whites and it may reach to penalty. Not only blacks around the world are suffering from racism, but also people in occupied countries such as Palestine. This is another type of using the violence and executions for religious reasons. Joy Luck Club Character Analysis No one is the same everyone is a different person and while people may have similarities they are still different people with different ideas and thoughts and outlooks on life even mothers and daughters. Such as the daughters and mothers in the book, The Joy Luck Club. For starters, a young girl named June and her mother Suyuan Woo were both alike in one common idea that they had completely different views on everything even in speaking as she states, these kinds of explanations made me feel my mother and I spoke two different languages, which we did. Even when they relate physically the mother relays to her daughter that she is a foreigner to her and her past as the story goes, A friend once told me that my mother and i were alike, that we had the same wispy hand gestures, same girlish laugh and sideways look. When I shyly told my mother this, she seemed insulted and said, you don t even know little percent of me how can you be me. • 16. Grimm Brothers Collective Culture The Grimm brothers lived in a factioned Germany with many different cultures that were struggling to connect with one another. In attempts to help unify Germany the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, traveled throughout the country; listening, collecting, and writing down oral stories and fables from various regions in Germany. They believed that preserving oral culture and stories from various places in Germany would nationalize Germany by having a collective culture rather than many different cultures. With seven total editions and a dictionary, preserving culture and unifying Germany was their life goal. Writing down these oral stories and collecting them assisted in the formation of Germany as a nation rather than multiple different imagined communities. Most nations have a shared common culture and an official language. The Grimm brothers helped usher in an age of oneness in Germany and in doing so, Germany became a more unified nation. At the time that the Grimm brothers were collecting their stories, Germany was many different groups of people, differing by region. They were not what we consider today a nation. A nation is an imagined political community and imagined as both inherently limited and 2 sovereign. (1. First reason why he felt that year nine was his best year so far was because of special friends that just moved to St Daniels and his name is James James Scobie. Even since James started at St Daniels, he had made a lot of impact on the student about Barry Bagsley. When James became Ishmael friend, Ishmael Became Bullied free to Bullet proof because Barry Bagsley feared James, James was the only one that had guts (in the whole school) to stand up to Barry Bagsley. You can read this in Chapter 14 and 15. Second reason why Ishmael named year nine on the best year of his life was him making great new friends. Friends that would always stand beside Ishmael if he was in trouble. When Ishmael had no friends he was a lone wolf but ever since he had friends, he was happiest Ishmael he could be. Night in and night out, Cousins produces at an All Star caliber level. Although he didn t lead the NBA in rebounding this past season, he leads the NBA in total rebounds over the last three seasons, finishing first in that category twice. Jordan s athletic ability is his biggest strength. It allows the Clippers to run their free flowing, fast up tempo offense at a peek level. Without Jordan the offense and defense would function at much more inefficient level. The only knock on Jordan s game is his inability to convert at the free throw line. He s among the worst free throw shooters in NBA history, but even so, Jordan s value should not be overlooked. He s just as important to the Clippers as Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. 4. Andre Drummond Detroit Pistons Since entering the league in 2012, Andre Drummond has evolved immensely as a player. • 19. Pros And Cons Of The Powhatans Prior to the arrival of the Europeans the Powhatan s were far less populated and were far less developed then the Europeans. They were hunter gatherers, hunting in thick forests during winter or neo lithic farmers who lived in villages and grew their own crops (such as maize, cotton, medicine and corn) and lived of them during summer and spring. The Powhatan s believed that land was not to be owned but belonged to everyone and anyone, on that land they built simple tent like houses that they could easily move when they had to. They did not have brick houses and buildings that the Europeans had. The Powhatan s used sticks, bows and arrows to hunt and not guns and weapons used by the Spanish. In a civilised place a man would do most of the work but women were the ones who built houses, fetched firewood and a lot more (Source 2) which is one of the many reasons why the Europeans thought the Indians were not civilised. There were no real boundaries, tribes were separated by rivers, swamps, mountains, and other natural landmarks (Source 13). The way they fought or killed was brutal, ...two large stones were placed on the ground, Smith s head was forced upon them and a warrior raised a club to smash in his brain (Source 4). The European nation that came to the Powhatan territory were the Spanish people. A lot of things brought them to the American territory, the Queen of England specifically was interested in the possibility of the colonies providing gold, a passage to Asia and challenging Spain in a world totally different from what they were used to ( the new world) (Source 1). The Spanish wanted to trade, establish new townships and plantations (source 2). They basically wanted to take over the Powhatan land and own it even if it was to be done by force. The Spanish invaded the Powhatan territory because they believed that it would make them richer then what they already were, the routes, the trade, the goods that the Native Americans had and the land of course. All of those things would help boost the Europeans economy bringing not only money but even more development to the countries there. • 20. The Rise and Fall of Class in Britain INTRODUCTION Beyond Class Forward to Class? The rise and fall of class in Britain is both an allusive and ironic phrase, totally correct yet also at least half mistaken. It is allusive (and correct) because, during the last twenty years or so, the once fashionable and widely accepted view that class structure and class analysis provide the key to understanding modern British history and modern British life has been disregarded by many historians and abandoned by almost all politicians. Yet it is also ironic (or mistaken), because it remains a generally held belief, not just in Britain but around the world, that class, like the weather and the monarchy, is a peculiarly and particularly British preoccupation. In trying to understand and explain the evolution of past societies, Marx believed it was essential to deal not just with the politics of their ruling elites but also with the histories of their whole populations. But how were these whole populations to be encompassed and described in a comprehensive and convincing way? What were the abstract concepts and collective nouns he thought it appropriate to employ for this purpose? Marx s solution which proved exceptionally influential was to classify individuals in collective groupings according to their different relations to the means of production. This enabled him (and his followers) to place everybody in one of three categories: landowners, who drew their unearned income from their estates as rents; bourgeois capitalists, who obtained their earned income from their businesses in the form of profits; and proletarian workers, who made their money by selling their labor to their employers in exchange for weekly wages. For Marx, these were the three fundamental, constitutive classes of human society, and it was in the conflicts among them, which had raged unabated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Stereotypes Exposed On Skin Color Stereotypes have existed since humans first began to roam the planet. Early Australopithecus, the first humans, most likely used stereotypes when deciding their daily task. Stereotypes such as everything are dangerous and want to kill them. Later as Homo sapiens created cities and civilianization s stereotypes helped evaluate an incoming threat so they could close the city and gather a defense to save not only themselves but everything they worked hard to create from those who would kill them and take the city from them. But modern human s ability to perceive threats have been clouded by stereotypes base on skin color; to a point where anyone who is different is a threat who needs to be eliminated. A proactive human whose flight or fight response is to fight will sometimes attack this perceived threat without any other information aside from the stereotype. These attacks can sometimes lead to the arrest or death of the threat who, in most cases, was an innocent in the wrong place at the wrong time. So while stereotypes where essential to survival in early cultures, modern use of stereotypes have turned to the extremes clouded by hatred of those who are different. In equatorial Africa a small species of human, Australopithecus, roamed the savannah. • 30. The Effects Of Coal Ash On The Health Of Water Systems Introduction Coal ash is a byproduct of burning coal in power plants and is composed mainly of aluminum and silicon oxides. This ash is commonly stored away in dump sites, only to leach out solutions of concentrated toxic heavy metals. Such issues are detrimental to the health of water systems, posing both a human and environmental health risk. However, there are solutions to this problem. Coal ash possesses unique chemical properties that allow for the remediation of other environmental concerns, such as the treatment of soil polluted with heavy metals, the removal of nutrients from wastewater, and the remediation of acid mine drainage in streams. Coal ash is known to contain a number of different toxic metals, the exact content dependent upon the coal it is formed from. Containing this potential pollution hazard is an expensive problem, as approximately 75% of all ash generated is stored in landfills. In these sites, rainwater can leach out toxic metals including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, molybdenum, lead and selenium. As over 500 million tons of ash are produced each year, there s an increasing environmental health hazard to the surrounding water systems of these landfills. Pollution can spread to municipal water systems and potentially poison humans. As such, figuring out a better solution to deal with the unused coal ash is of significant importance. Current uses of coal ash primarily include the formation of concrete due the pozzolanic properties of coal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In today s world, many teens are involved in a variety of games with simulated violence included in them. Although they are popular, these games have received a lot of controversy over the years. The ABM appeared to have all the characteristics of a solution in search of a problem. This characteristic shows up all too often in defense research and development programs, especially in the field of nuclear weaponry. A possibly fundamental reason why the ABM decision came up in 1969 was that ten years earlier Secretary of Defense McElroy, in dividing up the space and missile roles and missions among the three services, assigned the ABM to the Army as its only sophisticated missile program. This decision created a situation in which for many years the lives and careers of many able persons had been closely entwined with the life and fate of one single program: the Army s ABM. This not only included the civilians employed in the program office and by the main contractors, it also included uniformed personnel and a slew of part time advisers at all levels. • 41. What Makes a Good Website What makes a good website? Introduction In my opinion what makes a good web page? I have been on the net for the last, can t really believe it, coming to ten years now. From the conception to now, I have been a regular surfer on the web, visiting thousands of pages a month, mostly in search of some thing or another. Most searches have lead to even more searches but some times I come up tops. Having been used to the all text sites of the beginning, and seeing the first implementations of more graphic based sites, there was a three year lapse where I rarely got to surfing and missed a whole evolution in web page. When I returned in full to surfing, I discovered the face of the internet have started to change. Buttons with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Not using clashing colours is important, so, different shades of one colour used makes for a pleasant view, just using different text colours or inlays to spice it up a bit. Usability: After the first three seconds is up, and the site still has my attention, usability of the site is the one that will make me stick around. Usability comes in many forms, and has many ingredients to it. For a start, the layout is the most important. You can have good graphics but bad layout, and your site is ruined. Not thinking further than your own computer screen is a big mistake. If a page does not fit my screen when I open it up it already lost some points, so standardised width is a bonus that all good sites have. Even if you don t fill up the screen on bigger resolutions, having it usable on all is n good point (like nokia.com or cnn.com). Where you place everything is going to make it a good site or not. The simple points of usability is certainly obvious for someone who has spent some time on bad sites, not that I think I m pro at this, but off course they are catering for me as well when they are building the sites. Basic layout is very important, and by that, I mean, the basics in layout. Having things in places where you think people are going to look is a good start. If you have to look for a link to the main page from the splash page, then forget about getting much traffic. If the main page does ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Basso s ethnographic research titled, To Give up on Words: Silence in Western Apache Culture is an investigation of situations when members of a certain Apache community in the western United States assume the state of silence as a form of social interaction. In this paper, I will first note details of the society under consideration and Basso s interests in regards to the questions he is trying to answer. I will introduce some anthropological concepts that are suitable to the discussion, followed by Basso s observations regarding silence in the Apache community, including his methods, arguments, and conclusion. A group of gowąąs then combine to form a gotąą, which is described by Basso as spatially localized clusters. In the Cibecue community, rituals and traditions still carry great importance and play a significant role in communication, despite intervention from Anglo missionaries to modernize the community. A major part of Basso s interests in the Cibecue community is to study the role of silence in a community where focused gatherings are a common mode of public communication. He looks to examine situations where silence becomes the appropriate communicative process and the reasons why it is considered so. Moreover, these situations of silence only occur during a certain period or circumstance that is defined by tradition as well as experience. Another factor in Basso s interest is to define what human emotion determines the decision to remain silent in a particular situation. A discussion of Basso s definition of the term situation will be provided in the next section. Contextual Concepts In order to completely understand the arguments put forth by Basso in his research, it is vital to understand the concept that communication occurs with or without the usage of speech, and in this case through silence. Although the people engaged in this silence are not communicating directly per se, the silence is an acknowledgement of their presence. Interpersonal communication, which occurs face to face, employs three main technical components: a code (an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
