Comparing Shakespeare s Oedipus The King And Death...
COMPARING TRAGEDIES THROUGHOUT TIME
By Daniel Konshak What is a tragedy? Merriam Webster dictionary defines tragedy as a serious drama
typically describing a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force, such as destiny, and
having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror. Two such examples of literary
tragedies are Oedipus the King by Sophocles and Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. Although
written over 2000 years apart, there are many similarities between the two literary works, but with
varying degrees of differences as well. Some of the key areas to be examined when making this
comparison are: the social status of the main characters, the psychological mindsets the characters are
in, their respective lack of self awareness, whether their fate was deserved or not, and the main fatal
flaw of each main character. Let s begin by first examining the social status of the two main characters
from each literary selection. In Oedipus the King by Sophocles, the main character is, of course,
Oedipus. As the story unfolds, we find that Oedipus has been plagued by the prophecy that said he
should lie with his own mother and be his father s murderer (Sophocles, 385). Oedipus, in trying to
break this prophecy, flees from the city to escape this fate. However, unbeknownst to Oedipus, he was
actually born in Thebes and not in the city of Corinth as he originally believed. So, instead of escaping
the city and the fate of the

The Effectiveness Of The SAFE Act
The SAFE Act is considered reactionary firearm legislation, essentially being rushed through to pass.
It was designed to prevent criminals and the dangerously ill from purchasing firearms through a
universal background check, and greatly affects mental health professionals. The SAFE Act did not
get consideration from any mental health professionals though, and did not ask for their input. The Act
required mental health professionals to report patients they believe are likely to engage in conduct that
would result in serious harm to self or others to county authorities. Even if the professional believes
the patient would benefit from treatment, and doesn t even know if they have access to firearms, they
must report them. The SAFE Act effectively

European Refugee Crisis Essay
The European refugee crisis began in 2015, when a rising number of refugees and migrants made the
journey to the European Union (EU) to seek asylum. Refugees are people who have been forced to
leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. According to the data that
was shown in Business Standard and also confirmed by BBC News, the top ten nations which account
for 90% of the sea arrivals in 2015 were: Syria (49%), Afghanistan (21%), Iraq (8%), Eritrea (4%),
Pakistan, Nigeria and Somalia (2 %), Sudan, Gambia and Mali (1%). Also the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees confirms that the top three nationalities of refugees are Syrian, Afghan
and Iraqi. Of the refugees and migrants arriving in Europe by sea in 2015, 58% were men, 17%
women and 25% children. (Wright, 2015). According to Eurostat, EU member states received over 1.2
million first time asylum applications in 2015, 4 countries (Germany, Hungary, Sweden, and Austria)
received around two thirds, while Latvia received a very small part of them.
Latvia did not have any experience receiving or integrating refugees from other parts of the world
before refugee s crisis in Europe. At this moment, in Latvia the number of refugees is 776.
Unfortunately, the society s attitude towards refugees is negative in Latvia, if Latvia could they would
not take any more refugees, however, because Latvia is in EU Latvia has received an quota 1,29% of
refugees and Latvia needs to give them

A True Hero Essay
A hero could be anybody ranging from a standard everyday person to an amazing human being that
saves lives. The way that a person becomes a hero is no different compared to other people. I think a
hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming
obstacles. (Christopher Reeve) This quote shows how an everyday person could be a hero in the
littlest way. Nobody needs to have superpowers to be a hero, doing what is right to make everything
have a better outcome, could make anyone a hero.
A real and true hero would be willing to sacrifice him or herself to help out another person. Whether it
s saving their life or just a little thing like taking a blame for them. For example, while fighting for his
country, he lost an arm and was suddenly afraid (Cassian 64). This evidence shows how a man
sacrificed himself while fighting for others and his country in war. This resulted in him losing
something that belonged to him, making everything in life twice as hard for him now. Also, a true hero
will stand up for what is right and what he or she believes in, instead of following up of what others
think. This could relate to anything if it is standing up for rights, or their beliefs such as religion and
culture. Lastly, a true hero would help someone out without expecting some kind of award or to
become famous. For example, say if someone helps the police with catching a criminal, a true hero
would not question or expect to receive a reward for helping them out. At the end, if anyone acts self
centered or is not willing to make sacrifices to help others, they are not a hero. In contrast, a true hero
would not only care about themselves rather than also caring about others, as in being selfish. A hero
would not put himself first when someone else is in need of help. For example, if a person had a minor
issue compared to someone else and refused to help them out to deal with their own minor problem,
they are self centered. A real hero would also not just ignore someone when they are in need of some
help. They should help them out just because that makes them a good person. To illustrate, if someone
was in a big dilemma and they needed help, person would just ignore them or

Napoleon Diary Entry
Today, fifty odd years later, I sit on my porch alone, swinging gently in the morning. I can look out
over the yard. It looks just the same as the place were my most important moment of my life
happened. I ve kept it like that, so I never forgot. It s a large yard, that looks like a tiny meadow in a
forest. It s the height of summer right now, so all the trees are full and green. Just like it was then. I
remember the year of 1778. I was in my prime, the my early twenties. The Revolutionary War, my
platoon s second year in the war. I was their lieutenant, although it hardly seemed that I was above
them in rank. We were all the closest of friends, with loyalty deeper than I had ever known. We talked

I still doubt that it will ever change. As a reminder of those friends though, I planted a tree after the
war. It took months to get the seed, but it was important to me. I planted it at the edge of the small
forest on my land, where it looks just as out of place as it did all those years ago. The reason for this
was that during the years after, the old olive tree had died. So now, it sits in the same place as the old
one, maybe not quite as big, but and eternally sufficient reminder. And each day, I sit out on the porch
and listen to the birds in the tree sing, and watch them make their homes there.
Even now, as I sit here and remember this, I m sitting on the same wooden swing I ve sat for years,
looking at that olive tree. It is still the morning, and the birds are singing their waking songs in those
same trees by the olive. And deep in the olive tree, I see a flash of the white feathers It s been so long
since I saw. A flurry arises, and I watch the doves rise back into the sky. Twenty of them rising into ray
of of light, coming through the clouds. A God ray, as my family always called

The Church Of Jesus Christ
Commonly referred to as Mormons, though they prefer to be known as Latter day Saints. The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints was formed in the first half of the nineteenth century by its
founder, Joseph Smith. Smith was said to have been visited by God, the Father, and Jesus Christ after
retreating to the woods to pray for guidance. At the time there were multiple competing facets of
Christianity and Smith was unsure which to join. To answer his question, God and Jesus Christ told
him not to join any of the churches, but to restore the one true church. After Jesus s crucifixion, Latter
day Saints believe the original church fell after followers argued over his teachings leading to the loss
of his true message. Later, Smith was visited by an angel named Moroni, who announced the
existence of two gold plates for him to find. The plates were in an unknown language so, through God
s assistance, Smith translated the plates into English. Once they had been translated, the plates were
taken back by the angel. The translation of the plates came to be known as the Book of Mormon,
which is the groundwork of the church for Latter day Saints. Smith and his followers, due to the
hostility from the local population in New York, left to settle westward where they could practice their
religion freely. Along the journey, Smith was murdered by a mob for his religious beliefs, but his
follower continued on and settled in Utah. On February 14th, I interviewed Kevin Anderson at The

New Testament Letters
There are five general characteristics notable in the letters of the New Testament. In their Book,
Daniel Hays and Scott Duvall explain that the letters of the New Testament are comparable with other
ancient letters in the sense that they replace personal visits and are situational, carefully thought out
and given and intended for Christian believers. [1] Without a basic understanding of the general
characteristics of New Testament letters, the reader lacks the perspective and assumptions necessary
for interpretation.
Speaking of the literary context, William Klein argues that the supposed significance of any passage is
a meaning that corresponds to the meaning of the literary context in which it occurs. [2] New
Testament letters are no exception to this rule, since no single verse or phrase analyzed from a
sentence, paragraph, chapter or even the entire Bible can not be understood in isolation. Moreover, the

Aqr Momentum Fund
Overview
Momentum is a phenomenon shows that well performed stocks continue to outperform their peers
while poor performed stocks continue to underperform. Thus, more mutual funds use this powerful
strategy to draw a broad range of investors by getting higher risk adjusted returns. AQR is a hedge
fund based in Greenwich, Connecticut, offering investing products that applies price phenomenon
known as momentum. This case study enables investors to get a closer look at AQR s momentum
fund.
Comparison of momentum specifications
In order to analyze the momentum effect of different specifications, stocks were divided into winner
stocks and loser stocks according to their rankings.

Traditional momentum strategy
According to the case, there were four differences between AQR s retail momentum strategy and
traditional momentum strategy.
1. The retail strategy can only take long positions on winner stocks, while the traditional one can also
short the loser stocks to maximize returns.
2. As an open ended mutual fund, AQR has to maintain certain level of liquidity and be ready to return
capital to investors when they demand, while the traditional strategy used by hedge funds can require
a lock up period and a long redemption notice period.
3. AQR s strategy faced more stringent reporting and compensation requirements.
4. AQR s strategy was required by regulators to be sufficiently diversified among assets, industries as
well as companies. And to compare the profitability of both strategies, we estimated the expected

The Psychology of Heavy Metal Music Essay
Does heavy metal music have effects on society? Many people love listening to this kind of music and
they love going to concerts where these bands are playing. Going to concerts and listening to music is
the whole part of the music industry. If fans did not go to concerts, then musicians would not be able
to make money and be successful. Many people love listening to heavy metal music; however, some
people think that it could lead to violence, depression, and self loathing.
There have been numerous events in society where heavy metal musicians have been blamed for the
events that took place. Musicians have been blamed in school shootings and other events that have
caused tragedy or discomfort in the world. The lyrical content of ... Show more content on

Ozzy was writing the song to tell kids that alcohol is not as safe as they think it is. After these
incidents of suicides, people were forced to now take a look at the family life instead of the actual
music (Osbourne). Ozzy had to go to court because of tragedies to explain the lyrical content of the
song. He was not charged in any of the cases. It would have been ridiculous if he had been charged. It
is not his fault for people to misinterpret the meaning of his songs. Some people do not listen to the
lyrics closely. Some just listen to the music and do not follow along with the lyrics. Heavy metal
music has been a source of criticism ever since its birth in the late nineteen eighties (Coss). Many
people criticize this type of music because there is anger shown in the lyrics. Although the lyrics can
be controversial at times, there is no evidence saying that heavy metal music causes violence. Its
controversial lyrics and harsh sounds have made it the target of much blame for psychological and
behavioral problems in teenagers (Coss). Parents of teenagers now and in past decades have worried
about their kids listening to this kind of music. Most parents do not want their kids to listen to this
kind of music; they are afraid that the music will lead to devastating effects in society. Another reason
why parents do not like heavy metal music is that the music is extremely loud and ear shattering. Most

The Problem Of Addiction And Addiction
This ted talk was phenomenal it made me really think of how we react to addicts, addiction issues, and
related topics. Johann Hari, did a great job of explaining the current methods of handling addiction
from many perspectives, such as political and societal. His journey within his own family took him all
over the world to find the answers he wanted to know for himself and I think this was an inspiring
investigation. I believe it is important to investigate as much as possible when you are looking for a
new solution to any issue.
He explained that much of what we think we know about addiction is wrong and gave many examples
of why it is incorrect (Hari, 2015). One specific example that he discussed was if the audience all did
heroin for 3 weeks what would we as a society predict would happen next (e.g. addiction/chemical
hooks leading to dependence/physical need). It is clear the common assumption would be that they
would become addicts after those 3 weeks. He then went on to say what if he got hit by a car and was
given Diamorphine, which is a stronger form of heroin. He would have to use it over a period of time
and would become addicted. Again, we would think that he would become an addict form this strong
medication because as a society this is the common belief of how the addiction process works.
Another example he used was if your grandmother had a hip replacement and was given medication
for it. She would not become an addict, which in my case this did happen and

The Differences Between The Assyrians And The Middle East
The Assyrians were declared to have been an empire, but many would disagree. Looking at the three
different articles, we will see if they fit the criteria for what would have been known as an Empire, or
if they fit into what would be known as a kingdom. First a little back story on the Assyrians, they
existed between 911 and 609 BC. Its expansion and coverage over most of the Middle East is
astounding. It eclipsed a large chunk of Babylonia and Egypt. Making it appear to have been an
Empire just by looking at the way it expanded. While it does look like an empires form of growth,
there needs to be more evidence that could explain its overall political growth as well as the public
realm and how it was advancing.
Fascinating enough there is a stele, which is a slab of stone carved, with a hymnic summary of the
campaigns of central and northern Syria, it reads (Foreign) lands larger (than) the territory of Assyria I
captured, Countless people unto its people I added; I continuously herded them in safe pastures, I (am)
Tuglath pileser, king of Assyria. Who from East to West personally conquered all the lands. Over
realms where the chariots of the kings, my fathers, never passed, I appointed governors. From the
Great Sea of the East Resisuri (and) Gubla, on the Shore of the Great Sea of the West, I marched to

conquest of an empire. Historically speaking about a decade later

Sociological Explanations Of Gender Roles
Today it is seen as more socially acceptable for women to assume roles that are defined as
traditionally masculine than it is for men to assume roles that are defined as feminine. In my opinion,
this is based on stereotypical roles that have been placed by parents when babies are born stemming
from their own parent s stereotypical and traditional roles that have been modeled and observed by
them personally. For example, at a very young age, children notice whether their mother will stay at
home or work and viscera what their father does. Another example, for the majority I would say that
once a couple finds out their baby s gender the nursery room tends to painted in such a way based on
whether the baby is male or female. Including, toys

Lithium Research Paper
Lithium is the third element on the periodic table and is known as the lightest metal, and is half as
dense as water. It is a part of the Alkali metals, meaning it is in the first group on the periodic table.
Lithium is normally not found in nature, due to the fact that it has a very unstable nucleus. The name
Lithium is derived from the Greek word lithos, which means stone . This name was likely given to
Lithium due to the fact that it was discovered in the mineral petalite (LiAl(Si2O5)2) by Johann August
Arfvedson in 1817. It was later isolated through the form of electrolysis of lithium oxide by William
Thomas Brande. Lithium is made of two stable isotopes, with Lithium 6 containing 3 neutrons and
accounting 7.59% of the natural abundance of lithium, and Lithium 7 containing 4 neutrons and

Lithium hydroxide is used to absorb the carbon dioxide found in space vehicles. Because it produces a

The Importance Of Life In My Life
Life is what you make it
On the ceiling of my father s room wall hung Albert Einstein s frame which had the inscription, Life is
like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving. Those words greatly inspired me
as a teenager. Even in the most difficult moments, those words scream in my head not to give up. I
grew up at a time or period in Nigeria when the military junta overthrew the civilian government. The
political environment so tensed that it drove away investors. Consequently, the political instability
created crippled the economy. The only people that benefited from the military government were their
cronies. During this period, the popular middle class disappeared. The gap between the rich and the
poor widened. Food shortage arose because the government stopped supporting the farmers through
subsidies. Thus, it resulted in the inability of the head of families to provide three square meals for the
family. The food scarcity affected my family as well. There were days I would walk long distances to
school without eating. Also, on some days, I turned my hunger to fasting. I constantly improvised so I
would not get discouraged. In all these, my father kept telling me, My son, this is a phase in life we all
have to go through, everything will be fine. Despite the tough hurdles I had to cross growing up, I
succeeded and became a role model to other teenagers in the neighborhood because of the moral and
financial support from my parents, education

Darkness In The Sun Also Rises
On the other hand, Hemingway uses the element of darkness to show when a character is being
genuine. In the dark they are hidden from view of others and under this safety they show their real
emotions. Jake and Brett are walking together to a park to get away from the others back at the café.
In the light, Jake keeps his love for Brett a secret from all of his friends but gives the truth when it was
clouding over again. In the park it was dark under the trees. Do you still love me, Jake? [Brett] Yes,

sunlight making the atmosphere dark. Under cover from the light and away from the others, Brett asks

When Jake watches the bullfights in Spain, he meets a young bullfighter named Pedro Romero. He
mentions, Romero s face was very brown. He had very nice manners, (Hemingway 179). Romero s
dark skin replaces the need for dark lighting for showing the truth and also implies that he is always
genuine since his skin color cannot change. Unlike, Georgette and Harvey, Romero is also courteous
and pleasant even though the darkness of his skin would represent a character s ugliness. When Jake
watches the bullfights he realizes that, afterward, all that was faked turned bad and gave an unpleasant
feeling. Romero s bull fighting gave real emotion, because he kept the absolute purity of line in his
movements and always quietly and calmly let the horns pass him close each time (Hemingway 171).
Pedro Romero s bull fighting style was not exaggerated and staged like the others, but just what it
should be which makes it real. Jake gives Romero many compliments and even invites him to drink
together; meanwhile he merely ignores all the other bullfighters. This shows that Jake likes Romero as
a person, not just because he is a bullfighter. This attraction that Jake feels towards the young
bullfighter is due to the fighter s authentic way of tiring out and killing the bulls. Jake recognizes that
Romero is not just putting on a performance and acting to emphasize the danger but that Romero

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Jonathan Edwards memorable sermon, Sinners in the Hands of

congregation listened. It left a dramatic effect on the listeners leaving them weeping, and some even
considering suicide! Jonathan Edwards conveyed his message to turn their lives back to religion and

Unconverted men walk over the pit of hell on a rotten covering... (Edwards 122). Here he is giving
very vivid imagery. He is showing that unconverted men, or people not reborn again, are walking a
very thin line to an unpleasant afterlife. The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds
a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked:his wrath
towards you burns like fire...: (Edwards 123). In this metaphor Edward does a perfect job of
comparing a spider to them. He is saying that they unworthy, like a spider, and that they are worthy of
nothing else but the fire. You hang by a slender thread, with the flames of divine wrath flashing about
it... and you have no interest in any Mediator, and nothing to lay hold of to save yourself, nothing to
keep off the flames of wrath, nothing of your own, nothing that you ever have done, nothing that you
can do, to induce God to spare you one moment... (Edwards 124) In the section Edwards is trying to
have the crowd imagine themselves hanging by a very small thread, with nothing to help them.
Nothing in the moment can help them with their fate, and it has already been decided what will
happen to them. To sum it up, Edward s sermon is filled with an abundance of imagery to frighten
listeners into seeking God and avoiding

William Shakespeare, the most influential and important writer and playwright of all time, narrates the

After Henry declared his supremacy, the Christian church separated, forming the Church of England.
Henry installed the Acts of Succession and the first Act of Supremacy, declaring the king was the only

separated now from the pope, the Church of England was under England s rule, not Rome s. Henry
VIII by William Shakespeare shows a neutral bias towards the king. The play presents the events
during King Henry VIII to be predetermined. The fallen characters prevented the birth of Queen
Elizabeth and therefore it can be understood that their decline in station was an outcome of fate. Henry

of Queen Elizabeth than the importance of Henry VIII denouncing the pope. Shakespeare took pieces

Cortisol has been shown to have the greatest effect on the health of a person. Cortisol is a hormone
released in stressful situations. Cortisol levels in young children have been shown to increase when
the child is left in the care of someone they are unfamiliar with and when they attempt to interact or
play with large groups of other children. (Turvett 2008) Lack of control in a situation is associated
with a lack of recovery of cortisol, which can lead to a range of negative health effects. (Ursin 2004)
Discussion
The main purpose of my research was to find the association between childhood separation anxiety
disorder and mental disorders in adolescents and adults. Based on the results, high stress levels and
childhood separation anxiety disorder can be used to predict mental and psychiatric disorders later in a
child s life. When a child experiences the symptoms of separation anxiety disorder their body releases
hormones and if these hormones are heightened or too frequent the child has a higher risk of eating
disorders, depression, anxiety, and behavior disorders throughout the adolescence and adulthood
stages of their life.

Piaget Of The Infant Cognitive Development Essay
Background
In the context of infant cognitive development and its corresponding theories, Jean Piaget often serves
as a key theorist. Often referred to with the metaphor of children as explorers, Piaget believed that
children, from the moment of birth, are actively engaging with and exploring their surrounding
environment. With his contributions to the psychological field, like his six stages of sensorimotor
development, we grasp a better understanding of a child s first encounters developmentally. One of his
most important accounts was on the concept of object permanence. He was able to provide a look into
infants understanding of the physical world (DeHart, Sroufe, Cooper, p. 168). In order to better
understand his account on object permanence however, one must be aware of his six stages of
sensorimotor development: Reflexes, Primary Circular Reactions, Secondary Circular Reactions,
Coordination of Schemes, Tertiary Circular Reactions, and Beginnings of Representational Thought,
which were largely influence through his experiments with his own children. The first stage, Reflexes,
occurs from birth to 1 month. During this stage, Piaget asserted, infants are limited to their biological,
programmed reflexes. He uses the term reflex in a much more broad sense in that he refers it as ... any
built in behavior pattern instead of automatic responses to particular stimuli (DeHart, Sroufe, Cooper,
p. 164). These built in behavior patterns are not only

Cell Proliferation And Its Effects On Our Patient s...
homeostasis and cAMP are both dysregulated, this in turn leads to alterations in the pathways that
carry out cell proliferation, allowing for cells to rapidly reproduce. In terms of fluid secretion, it

The need for intervention in this disease is obvious, without it patient s quality of life is greatly

Promising Agent: Our promising agent is a rational drug because we know the target and are
designing a drug to target that specific protein. The protein we are targeting is the Sirtuin 1 protein.
This drug works on a molecular level by decreasing the amount of protein SIRT1 found in kidney
epithelial cells. SIRT1 has been found to prevent cystic epithelial apoptosis, meaning it prevents cells
from dying that cause the formation of cysts in the kidneys. By inhibiting SIRT1, apoptosis will be
activated and increased, and cystic cells will die, which will slow the growth of existing cysts, and
prevent the growth of new cysts in the kidneys, and possibly the liver, and other organs this disease
can sometimes affect. The solution of the drug works by inhibiting SIRT1. In ADPKD, the levels of
SIRT1 are dramatically increased in kidney epithelial cells. By inhibiting SIRT1, we will essentially
be delaying the growth of cysts, and stopping the formation of new cysts from developing in the
kidneys which is what makes ADPKD such a deliberating disease. SIRT1 is a very smart protein,

Gender and Sexuality in Culture
Diversity or rather, the lack of understanding diversity may be one of the most prevalent issues in the
world today. Though the World Wide Web has bridged the cultural gap some, it will never fully or
accurately reveal the truth simply because it is difficult to fully understand cultural meanings from an
outsider s perspective. Before the internet, careers in anthropology and similar fields made
information available through ethnographic readings and studies. A key inquiry anthropologists seek
to answer is the distinction between and role of sex, gender, and sexuality within each separate
culture. Y The Last Man and other ethnographic texts connect culture, its language, and the formation

A more specific type of cultural oppression is what Amazons feel that men have over women.
Amazons portrayed in Y are an extremist group of women who believe that the men died for a reason,
and they intend to embrace the new freedom and control given to them by Mother Earth (Vaughan,
96). Subjugation that these women felt from their male counterpart was apparently detrimental to their
lives. In The Sworn Virgins of Albania , women decide to take on a male status for various reasons
such as protection, avoiding an arranged marriage, and keeping the family name (Young, 253). With
all men extinct, the sworn virgins would have no need to exist. According to Different Words,
Different Worlds , men s authority over women is seen through chivalrous acts such as opening a door.
What they believe is in fact happening is that the man gives the woman permission to walk first, but
he can easily take that consent away just the same, thus confirming he has the control (Tannen, 231).
Language is another tool used to control and belittle.
Language is only fully understood within the context of its culture. After the Amazon leader is called a
cunt by a rebelling girl, she explains there is no longer offense in the word since the men made society
see it in a negative light and disregard its ancient historical meaning of all powerful (Vaughan, 112). In

The Importance Of Religion In The Dark Ages
Over twelve centuries ago, the Dark Ages marked the years in between the fall of the Roman Empire
and the birth of the Renaissance period. Little technological improvement, no major civilizations, as
well as diseases like the bubonic plague were part of the reasons why this time period was known as
has been named the Dark Ages. Nobles were heads of their manors and one of the most popular jobs
was serfdoms, working lands in exchange for protection if their was war. Manors were secluded by
hills, moats and extensive land for ultimate protection. However, over twelve hundred years later our
societies have advanced significantly and many new technologies have emerged. Over those years,
three major ways our cultures have differed from each other was through the importance of religion,
the presence of war in everyday life and through the way people are perceived. One major way that
these positions differ from each other is through the importance of religion in our everyday lives. The
major religion during this time period was Roman Catholic. Today, the three most dominant religions
are Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Religion today is not accepted as openly within today s worlds as
it was back then. Most people believe that religious texts are up to interpretation and often people in
the same religion will have different views on the same topic. However, during the Dark Ages, the
bible was only interpreted one way. Religion was extremely open and you were looked down upon if
you didn t attend church. Every village had a church and you would pray to have good things happen
to your family. Today s society has a separation of church and state and people will follow the
constitutional laws before they follow religious ones. However, in the Dark Ages religion would be
used to justify laws. Thomas Aquinas writes in Whether it is Lawful to Sell a Thing for More Than it
is Worth that it is lawful to sell something for more than it s worth however, On the contrary, it is
written in Matthew (7:12) All things whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even so
to them. Now, no one wants to have a thing sold to him for more than it is worth. Therefore no one

Historically, due to our post colonial background, that of the plantation society, education was only
afforded to the white, upper class individuals. In order to establish and reinforce a hierarchy of power
and ownership, wealthy capitalists ensured first rate education for their children, while actively
excluding members of the lower classes from this luxury. Due to the caste system, students or

Angelman Syndrome and Prader-Willi Syndrome Essay
Angelman Syndrome Prader Willi Syndrome
Introduction
Prader Willi and Angelman Syndrome are two genetic disorders with vastly differing phenotypes
linked by missing genetic imprints on the 15th chromosome s q arm between regions 11 and 13 .
While both orders result in mental deficits, their symptoms are otherwise segregated from the other in
their entirety. The differences in the disorders are the result of differing DNA methylation patterns
present in maternally and paternally inherited DNA. If the deletion occurs in the mother s DNA, then
Prader Willi Syndrome appears. When the deletion occurs in the father s DNA, Angelman Syndrome
is the result.
The phenotypical differences between the two disorders are drastic. Those with ... Show more content

The Nature of the Disease Angelman syndrome is thought to be caused mainly by the deletion of the
maternally inherited copy of UEB3A. A small number of cases are also caused by failures in
imprinting or, very rarely, monosomy 15 in the egg and disomy 15 in the sperm. The profound mental
effects are caused by this gene due to the fact that, while UEB3A s protein is active in various bodily
tissues, only the mother s copy of the gene is active in the brain. The phenotype of Angelman
Syndrome is not overt enough to be detected unless it is being specifically looked for. EEG scans are
capable of detecting the disease at early ages, before it is otherwise possible to detect.
Prader Willi
Prader Willi is caused by either deletions, failure in imprinting, or monosomy/disomy 15 from the
father s side. The genes involved are known to include, but are not known to be limited to SNRPN and
NDN. NDN odes for the protein Necdin, which, in rodents, interacts with neurotrophin receptors in a
way that is not completely understood to promote normal cognitive development. SNRPN codes for
several products, including small nucleolar RNAs, a splicing factor involved in RNA processing, and a
polypeptide known as SNURF. The precise role of this gene is unknown.
Symptoms. Prader Willi syndrome presents symptoms beginning in utero, where the fetus is less
active than one without the

The Strategy Of Mergers And Acquisition

of two companies, whereas acquisition is when one company completely takeover another (Gupta,

trends for an M A deal are based on factors such as oil prices, capital availability, oil acquisitions, or

court sided with ex girlfriend Karla Dunston concerning a dispute over the disposition of
cryopreserved pre embryos that were created when Mr. Szafranki donated his sperm and Ms. Dunston

having been informed that her chemotherapy treatments would likely render her infertile. Mr.

retrieved and cryopreserved as a result of the in vitro fertilization retrieval shall be under Ms. Dunston
s sole control and should the couple separate, Ms. Dunston will control the disposition of those pre
embryos. The co parent agreement was never signed yet the couple moved forward with the in vitro

seeking to permanently enjoin Ms. Dunston from using the pre embryos so he could preserve his right

both the woman and the man is required for any sue of the pre embryos. In September

Social Inequality In Urbanization
Urbanization is a complex phenomenon that brought multitudes of diverse social groups together into
one central location. Suddenly cities began to overflow with new cultures and ethnicities that gave
communities vibrant characteristics and new life. People were able to access modern conveniences
and socially network among thousands of individuals, all within one city. The economics of the city
allowed for greater production and a thriving business system that promoted politics and business.
Products from all over the world could be accessible somewhere in the vast cities that expanded across
the United States. However, even from the beginning of this glorious migration to cities, inequality
was embedded in the social system of stigmas and prejudice for minority populations (Gottdiener, M.,
Hutchison, R., Ryan, M., 2015). As wealth and prosperity consumed the dominating Caucasian
population, inequality and disadvantage settled over minorities such as Blacks and Latinos. Quickly,
racial and ethic groups divided into segregated communities within urban societies inner cities. The
pseudo blanket of togetherness , as one community, was hiding the disadvantages and biases that
limited the growth of minority groups in economics, society, and social mobility. Limitations were set
by the dominating social groups that encouraged discrimination and prejudice towards minorities
(Gottdiener, 2015). Even after decades of civil rights movements and freedom for all protests, little

In the movie, Jack, Luna Diego, had some serious mental health problems. He was Harvey Milk s

mental health problems was just a natural disaster waiting to occur just like it explains in article 2,
Dustin was gay and to him this meant that he had only two, equally bleak options: to vanish into the
periphery or to commit suicide. (Weigle, 1) Not many people accepted it, and to think someone feels
as if they only have two options because their sexuality is not the norm is insane. People were just
starting to recognize mental health as a sickness and not just as being possessed or something in that
general category. It was looked at more positively than negatively. Being gay, as said in the beginning,
is still not very accepted and Jack having all of this plus dealing with the stress of Harvey s
campaigning and advocacy for Gay Rights just put him over the edge. It really had an effect on Jack s
identity. He probably did not even know who he was anymore. People identified him as gay and
someone with mental health problems and these opinions are what really pushed him to the edge. He
later committed suicide because he could not take on the stress of all that anymore. Another example
from the movie would be Harvey Milk himself. Did being an advocate and fighting for his rights
affect him as a person? Definitely. He had a great relationship with another man before Jack and
before all this campaigning started. That obviously did not last because of

Visual Comedy And Physical Comedy
The American audience has always held tightly to the concept of visual media, ever since its
conception ( The History of Motion Pictures, n.d.). In the 1890s, Thomas Edison mesmerized
audiences with simplistic shows two trains crashing, the water flowing over Niagara Falls, a
beachscape. Scenes like this used to draw huge crowds of people in, curious as to how the realm of a
motion picture would move forward ( The History of Motion Pictures, n.d.). Not until the 1900s did
film directors begin telling stories with their works. Of those works came the most classic form of its
genre: Physical Comedy. Since the implementation of sound had not been established until 1927 ( The
History of Motion Pictures, n.d.), physical/visual forms of comedy were all that could be used. In this
paper, we will analyze the use of the visual comedic style through time, as well as its gradual decline
in contemporary cinema. It is a common belief that on October 6, 1927, when Jolson belted out those
pioneering songs in The Jazz Singer he was sounding the death knell of silent film and with it, visual
comedy. (Dutton, 2015). The Jazz Singer heralded the commercial ascendance of sound films and the
decline of the silent film era. (Wikipedia, 2017). With dialogue on the rise, visual comedy was
declining in cinema. Visual or Silent comedy fell. Many people believe that even though talkies came
after silent films, comedy from the dialogue was a downgraded from the silent or visual comedy.

Toyota Manufacturing Liability And Negligence Regarding A...
Today s consumers, for the most part, consider buying a car one of the most important investments of
their life, next to buying their home. The average price for a new Toyota Motor Corporation vehicle
today is around $25,000 or more, with the company also manufacturing Lexus models. This solidifies
its rather large and costly importance in terms of budget for families and single consumers. As vehicle
technologies advance so do their expected safety ratings and features, which are often times important
selling points for both consumers and salesmen alike. However, there are still margins for error
regarding manufacturing and safety, which unfortunately results in loss of life at times for some
consumers, which puts Toyota at risk for being held liable concerning product liability and

multiple reasons. The reasons behind celebrities being considered role models are as following, they
have a huge following of supporters, they can help with causes, and they are very inspirational.
Overall, celebrities should be role models. Out of the many reasons backing up celebrities being role
models one of the reasons would be that they have a huge following of people that either support them
or know of them. With this comes a lot of power that they can use for good. Celebrities could use this
following to help kids who look up to them. If the superstar stayed in school and did not do drugs then
the kids and teens that look up to them will do the same thing. They would think that they do not have
to ditch school and do drugs to be cool. Celebrities could also use their spotlight to show people
different experiences. For example, if a moviestar post on their social media platform that they are
going to go take a hike up to the hollywood sign, then the followers might want to do the same thing
that maybe they would have never done before. Which, by doing so may show the person that they
love hiking or being outside, giving them a new healthy hobby. Celebrities show their followers
different things all the time that they may not have known before making them a role model.

Review Of Dover Beach

Arnold s Dover Beach
English 201

Doubt on Dover Beach:
An Exploration of the Loss of Faith in the Victorian Era The Victorian age is marked by the sudden
and startling changes it brought on the western world. As industrialization, intense colonization, and
expanding practices of sciences abounded, the traditional ideas and ideals that had once seemed
constant and true, were suddenly precarious. Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach has become
quintessential to the Victorian literary canon as it is exactly this struggle with a loss of constancy and
the confrontation with the unknown and uncertainty that Arnold evokes within its lines. Dover Beach
explores the potential effects of these sudden shifts in culture; particularly the shift towards scientific
exploration and the threat this shift had on notions of Christianity and faith. The poem acts as a grand
sweeping metaphor for the ideas of constancy and doubt as it lures the reader into a sense of
permanence and complacency before undermining that sense by contradicting itself and implementing
mistrust; ultimately it leaves the reader with a sense that since faith is not eternal, nothing is. This
metaphor is enhanced and nuanced through Arnold s interesting use of structure and sudden shifts in
tone. The first stanza of Dover Beach consists of fourteen lines in iambic meter (though not iambic
pentameter) with varying lengths and features a seemingly random rhyme structure of:

How To Write An Analytical Essay On A Rose For Emily
A Rose For Emily
An Analytical Essay
In A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, both Emily and the town s citizens continually
demonstrate the nature of being frightened of progress as this dread of change is a reoccurring
subject inside the story. The story also embodies the effect tragedy can have on someone. The
author employs this message to show how Emily fails to adapt to inevitable historical and social
change in the South due to said environment and the tragic death of her father.
After Emily #39;s father dies, she enters a state of dissent and the first insight the reader gets
of this is the point at which she is inquired about it. Her dad had been her overseer, supplier, and
protector. He was the most imperative figure in her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She manages this sudden
change in way of life by doing things the way they #39;ve generally been done. quot;Emily lives in
isolation and was imprisoned previously (Mohsin). In her mind, she doesn #39;t think it is essential
nor likely for her to acclimate to the evolving society. In A Rose for Emily, Emily declines to pay
taxes and legitimizes herself by saying Colonel Sartoris has exempted her from this obligation.
What she doesn #39;t know or imagines not to know is that quot;Colonel Sartoris had been dead
almost
ten years. quot; (Faulkner, 3) She doesn #39;t acknowledge the progression of time; neither does she
acknowledge change, nor the misfortune that follows her, symbolized by the way that she
declines to participate with the modern postal service, noting the tax notice quot;paper of an archaic
shape, in a thin, flowing calligraphy in faded ink. Declining to adjust to the new way of life,
Emily needs to experience the ill effects of the loneliness and intensity of being separated from
the outside world quot; (Skinner). Skinner recognizes the events in the story that most support our
argument. She doesn #39;t welcome any new change or recognize a portion of the old changes

Pros And Cons Of Gunter Demnig
To determine the general atmosphere regarding Gunter Demnig s artwork, we took German newspaper
articles from individual cities as representative of the local opinion. As each controversy consists of
the pros and cons, the public has also highly varying perception of the memorial, which will be
presented in the following. At first sight, the Stolpersteine are perceived very positively through their
visualisation of individual destinies across whole cities (Korn, 2014). This illustration makes the past
prosecution more real and accessible for the public and is considered as an opportunity to remember
every day (Woldin, 2014). It goes even so far that relatives of the victims consider the Stolpersteine as
a chance to immortalise them and hence, to prevent a process of extinction and ... Show more content

As a private person, he blames him for exploiting the situation and to gain from a million dollar
business (Killy, 2014). However, the initiator of the Stolpersteine in Hamburg, Peter Hess, subtends
that the price of 120 Euros for one Stolperstein is not enough to make capital out of it (Kaiser, 2014).
Furthermore, the artist does not take any money for his work input, but only for the manufacturing
process of the stones (Wie Steine an die Ausgrenzung erinnern, 2004). Showing on the one hand, that
the Jewish community in Hamburg is not committed to the negative comments of Killy, but rather
supports the project and on the other, the large extent and its emotional component in which the
monument is discussed. As we can see, the reactions of the public differ quite substantially. There
exist many proponents of the memorial who are very positive towards Demnig s approach of
remembering the victims and support his idea. Although there exist some concerns about the
Stolpersteine, overall it still resulted in in a wide spread of the memorial.

  • 2. Comparing Shakespeare s Oedipus The King And Death... COMPARING TRAGEDIES THROUGHOUT TIME By Daniel Konshak What is a tragedy? Merriam Webster dictionary defines tragedy as a serious drama typically describing a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force, such as destiny, and having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror. Two such examples of literary tragedies are Oedipus the King by Sophocles and Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller. Although written over 2000 years apart, there are many similarities between the two literary works, but with varying degrees of differences as well. Some of the key areas to be examined when making this comparison are: the social status of the main characters, the psychological mindsets the characters are in, their respective lack of self awareness, whether their fate was deserved or not, and the main fatal flaw of each main character. Let s begin by first examining the social status of the two main characters from each literary selection. In Oedipus the King by Sophocles, the main character is, of course, Oedipus. As the story unfolds, we find that Oedipus has been plagued by the prophecy that said he should lie with his own mother and be his father s murderer (Sophocles, 385). Oedipus, in trying to break this prophecy, flees from the city to escape this fate. However, unbeknownst to Oedipus, he was actually born in Thebes and not in the city of Corinth as he originally believed. So, instead of escaping the city and the fate of the ... The Act required mental health professionals to report patients they believe are likely to engage in conduct that would result in serious harm to self or others to county authorities. Refugees are people who have been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. According to the data that was shown in Business Standard and also confirmed by BBC News, the top ten nations which account for 90% of the sea arrivals in 2015 were: Syria (49%), Afghanistan (21%), Iraq (8%), Eritrea (4%), Pakistan, Nigeria and Somalia (2 %), Sudan, Gambia and Mali (1%). Also the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees confirms that the top three nationalities of refugees are Syrian, Afghan and Iraqi. Of the refugees and migrants arriving in Europe by sea in 2015, 58% were men, 17% women and 25% children. (Wright, 2015). According to Eurostat, EU member states received over 1.2 million first time asylum applications in 2015, 4 countries (Germany, Hungary, Sweden, and Austria) received around two thirds, while Latvia received a very small part of them. Latvia did not have any experience receiving or integrating refugees from other parts of the world before refugee s crisis in Europe. At this moment, in Latvia the number of refugees is 776. • 5. A True Hero Essay A hero could be anybody ranging from a standard everyday person to an amazing human being that saves lives. The way that a person becomes a hero is no different compared to other people. I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles. (Christopher Reeve) This quote shows how an everyday person could be a hero in the littlest way. Nobody needs to have superpowers to be a hero, doing what is right to make everything have a better outcome, could make anyone a hero. A real and true hero would be willing to sacrifice him or herself to help out another person. Whether it s saving their life or just a little thing like taking a blame for them. For example, while fighting for his country, he lost an arm and was suddenly afraid (Cassian 64). This evidence shows how a man sacrificed himself while fighting for others and his country in war. This resulted in him losing something that belonged to him, making everything in life twice as hard for him now. Also, a true hero will stand up for what is right and what he or she believes in, instead of following up of what others think. This could relate to anything if it is standing up for rights, or their beliefs such as religion and culture. Lastly, a true hero would help someone out without expecting some kind of award or to become famous. For example, say if someone helps the police with catching a criminal, a true hero would not question or expect to receive a reward for helping them out. At the end, if anyone acts self centered or is not willing to make sacrifices to help others, they are not a hero. In contrast, a true hero would not only care about themselves rather than also caring about others, as in being selfish. A hero would not put himself first when someone else is in need of help. For example, if a person had a minor issue compared to someone else and refused to help them out to deal with their own minor problem, they are self centered. A real hero would also not just ignore someone when they are in need of some help. They should help them out just because that makes them a good person. To illustrate, if someone was in a big dilemma and they needed help, person would just ignore them or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Church Of Jesus Christ Commonly referred to as Mormons, though they prefer to be known as Latter day Saints. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints was formed in the first half of the nineteenth century by its founder, Joseph Smith. Smith was said to have been visited by God, the Father, and Jesus Christ after retreating to the woods to pray for guidance. At the time there were multiple competing facets of Christianity and Smith was unsure which to join. To answer his question, God and Jesus Christ told him not to join any of the churches, but to restore the one true church. After Jesus s crucifixion, Latter day Saints believe the original church fell after followers argued over his teachings leading to the loss of his true message. Later, Smith was visited by an angel named Moroni, who announced the existence of two gold plates for him to find. The plates were in an unknown language so, through God s assistance, Smith translated the plates into English. Once they had been translated, the plates were taken back by the angel. The translation of the plates came to be known as the Book of Mormon, which is the groundwork of the church for Latter day Saints. Smith and his followers, due to the hostility from the local population in New York, left to settle westward where they could practice their religion freely. Along the journey, Smith was murdered by a mob for his religious beliefs, but his follower continued on and settled in Utah. On February 14th, I interviewed Kevin Anderson at The ... • 8. New Testament Letters There are five general characteristics notable in the letters of the New Testament. In their Book, Daniel Hays and Scott Duvall explain that the letters of the New Testament are comparable with other ancient letters in the sense that they replace personal visits and are situational, carefully thought out and given and intended for Christian believers. [1] Without a basic understanding of the general characteristics of New Testament letters, the reader lacks the perspective and assumptions necessary for interpretation. Speaking of the literary context, William Klein argues that the supposed significance of any passage is a meaning that corresponds to the meaning of the literary context in which it occurs. • 12. The Problem Of Addiction And Addiction This ted talk was phenomenal it made me really think of how we react to addicts, addiction issues, and related topics. Johann Hari, did a great job of explaining the current methods of handling addiction from many perspectives, such as political and societal. His journey within his own family took him all over the world to find the answers he wanted to know for himself and I think this was an inspiring investigation. I believe it is important to investigate as much as possible when you are looking for a new solution to any issue. He explained that much of what we think we know about addiction is wrong and gave many examples of why it is incorrect (Hari, 2015). One specific example that he discussed was if the audience all did heroin for 3 weeks what would we as a society predict would happen next (e.g. addiction/chemical hooks leading to dependence/physical need). It is clear the common assumption would be that they would become addicts after those 3 weeks. He then went on to say what if he got hit by a car and was given Diamorphine, which is a stronger form of heroin. He would have to use it over a period of time and would become addicted. Again, we would think that he would become an addict form this strong medication because as a society this is the common belief of how the addiction process works. Another example he used was if your grandmother had a hip replacement and was given medication for it. She would not become an addict, which in my case this did happen and ... First a little back story on the Assyrians, they existed between 911 and 609 BC. Its expansion and coverage over most of the Middle East is astounding. It eclipsed a large chunk of Babylonia and Egypt. Making it appear to have been an Empire just by looking at the way it expanded. While it does look like an empires form of growth, there needs to be more evidence that could explain its overall political growth as well as the public realm and how it was advancing. Fascinating enough there is a stele, which is a slab of stone carved, with a hymnic summary of the campaigns of central and northern Syria, it reads (Foreign) lands larger (than) the territory of Assyria I captured, Countless people unto its people I added; I continuously herded them in safe pastures, I (am) Tuglath pileser, king of Assyria. • 22. Piaget Of The Infant Cognitive Development Essay Background In the context of infant cognitive development and its corresponding theories, Jean Piaget often serves as a key theorist. Often referred to with the metaphor of children as explorers, Piaget believed that children, from the moment of birth, are actively engaging with and exploring their surrounding environment. With his contributions to the psychological field, like his six stages of sensorimotor development, we grasp a better understanding of a child s first encounters developmentally. One of his most important accounts was on the concept of object permanence. He was able to provide a look into infants understanding of the physical world (DeHart, Sroufe, Cooper, p. 168). In order to better understand his account on object permanence however, one must be aware of his six stages of sensorimotor development: Reflexes, Primary Circular Reactions, Secondary Circular Reactions, Coordination of Schemes, Tertiary Circular Reactions, and Beginnings of Representational Thought, which were largely influence through his experiments with his own children. The first stage, Reflexes, occurs from birth to 1 month. During this stage, Piaget asserted, infants are limited to their biological, programmed reflexes. Cell Proliferation And Its Effects On Our Patient s... homeostasis and cAMP are both dysregulated, this in turn leads to alterations in the pathways that carry out cell proliferation, allowing for cells to rapidly reproduce. In terms of fluid secretion, it increases causing inflammation within the kidneys. The need for intervention in this disease is obvious, without it patient s quality of life is greatly depleted. The protein we are targeting is the Sirtuin 1 protein. This drug works on a molecular level by decreasing the amount of protein SIRT1 found in kidney epithelial cells. SIRT1 has been found to prevent cystic epithelial apoptosis, meaning it prevents cells from dying that cause the formation of cysts in the kidneys. By inhibiting SIRT1, apoptosis will be activated and increased, and cystic cells will die, which will slow the growth of existing cysts, and prevent the growth of new cysts in the kidneys, and possibly the liver, and other organs this disease can sometimes affect. The solution of the drug works by inhibiting SIRT1. In ADPKD, the levels of SIRT1 are dramatically increased in kidney epithelial cells. By inhibiting SIRT1, we will essentially be delaying the growth of cysts, and stopping the formation of new cysts from developing in the kidneys which is what makes ADPKD such a deliberating disease. Amazons portrayed in Y are an extremist group of women who believe that the men died for a reason, and they intend to embrace the new freedom and control given to them by Mother Earth (Vaughan, 96). Subjugation that these women felt from their male counterpart was apparently detrimental to their lives. In The Sworn Virgins of Albania , women decide to take on a male status for various reasons such as protection, avoiding an arranged marriage, and keeping the family name (Young, 253). • 29. The Importance Of Religion In The Dark Ages Over twelve centuries ago, the Dark Ages marked the years in between the fall of the Roman Empire and the birth of the Renaissance period. Little technological improvement, no major civilizations, as well as diseases like the bubonic plague were part of the reasons why this time period was known as has been named the Dark Ages. Nobles were heads of their manors and one of the most popular jobs was serfdoms, working lands in exchange for protection if their was war. Manors were secluded by hills, moats and extensive land for ultimate protection. However, over twelve hundred years later our societies have advanced significantly and many new technologies have emerged. Over those years, three major ways our cultures have differed from each other was through the importance of religion, the presence of war in everyday life and through the way people are perceived. One major way that these positions differ from each other is through the importance of religion in our everyday lives. The major religion during this time period was Roman Catholic. Today, the three most dominant religions are Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Religion today is not accepted as openly within today s worlds as it was back then. Most people believe that religious texts are up to interpretation and often people in the same religion will have different views on the same topic. However, during the Dark Ages, the bible was only interpreted one way. Religion was extremely open and you were looked down upon if you didn t attend church. Every village had a church and you would pray to have good things happen to your family. Today s society has a separation of church and state and people will follow the constitutional laws before they follow religious ones. However, in the Dark Ages religion would be used to justify laws. Thomas Aquinas writes in Whether it is Lawful to Sell a Thing for More Than it is Worth that it is lawful to sell something for more than it s worth however, On the contrary, it is written in Matthew (7:12) All things whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, do ye even so to them. The differences in the disorders are the result of differing DNA methylation patterns present in maternally and paternally inherited DNA. A small number of cases are also caused by failures in imprinting or, very rarely, monosomy 15 in the egg and disomy 15 in the sperm. The profound mental effects are caused by this gene due to the fact that, while UEB3A s protein is active in various bodily tissues, only the mother s copy of the gene is active in the brain. The phenotype of Angelman Syndrome is not overt enough to be detected unless it is being specifically looked for. EEG scans are capable of detecting the disease at early ages, before it is otherwise possible to detect. The economics of the city allowed for greater production and a thriving business system that promoted politics and business. Products from all over the world could be accessible somewhere in the vast cities that expanded across the United States. However, even from the beginning of this glorious migration to cities, inequality was embedded in the social system of stigmas and prejudice for minority populations (Gottdiener, M., Hutchison, R., Ryan, M., 2015). As wealth and prosperity consumed the dominating Caucasian population, inequality and disadvantage settled over minorities such as Blacks and Latinos. Quickly, racial and ethic groups divided into segregated communities within urban societies inner cities. The pseudo blanket of togetherness , as one community, was hiding the disadvantages and biases that limited the growth of minority groups in economics, society, and social mobility. Review Of Dover Beach Sage Walund Gorra Arnold s Dover Beach English 201 3/9/15 Doubt on Dover Beach: An Exploration of the Loss of Faith in the Victorian Era The Victorian age is marked by the sudden and startling changes it brought on the western world. As industrialization, intense colonization, and expanding practices of sciences abounded, the traditional ideas and ideals that had once seemed constant and true, were suddenly precarious. Matthew Arnold s Dover Beach has become quintessential to the Victorian literary canon as it is exactly this struggle with a loss of constancy and the confrontation with the unknown and uncertainty that Arnold evokes within its lines. Dover Beach explores the potential effects of these sudden shifts in culture; particularly the shift towards scientific exploration and the threat this shift had on notions of Christianity and faith. The poem acts as a grand sweeping metaphor for the ideas of constancy and doubt as it lures the reader into a sense of permanence and complacency before undermining that sense by contradicting itself and implementing mistrust; ultimately it leaves the reader with a sense that since faith is not eternal, nothing is. This metaphor is enhanced and nuanced through Arnold s interesting use of structure and sudden shifts in tone. The first stanza of Dover Beach consists of fourteen lines in iambic meter (though not iambic pentameter) with varying lengths and features a seemingly random rhyme structure of: ...
